LIFE IN INDIA Much before Ketki came to the US, she had been deeply involved in the rarely talked about art forms back in India. With an artistic inclination, as a young schoolgirl, studying in Ahmedabad, Ketki enrolled herself in Darpan Academy in Ahmedabad. She was also learning Bharatnatyam alongside her theatre training. She performed Bhavai form of theatre, which is folk drama from Gujarat. During her younger days in Ahmedabad she recalls she did a lot of experimental theatre. She says, “it was more of philanthropy combined with street art so instead of performing at big stages we would go to small cities and villages and educate people through art. There were no green rooms, no facilties but just the satisfaction of bringing art closer to people.” She also did a lot of street theatre. Ketki also did a course from the prestigious National School of Drama in Delhi. She says, “Those were very enlightening years as one learnt so much.” About her classmates during those days in NSD she says, “Around the same time Anupam Kher was also there. Besides the institution instills so much love for theatre in you that it reflects in so many talented people who come out of there.” Ketki also dabbled a little in Gujarati

ith an avid interest in performing arts and an impressive background in experimental theatre back home in Ahmedabad, India, it was natural for Ketki to notice the void in the representation of the rich offerings of Indian theatre in America. To offer a glimpse on the highly intellectual theatrical scene in India, Ketki embarked on a never-attempted-before journey. She formed Vachikam in 1995, in Chicago -- a platform to bring awareness and appreciation about Indian culture and performing arts to audiences in America and Canada. Over the years’ with her venture she became a pioneer to bring some of the most legendary plays, playwrights, theatre personalities, actors and artists from India to America. She was also instrumental in getting some of the most critically acclaimed plays such as Tumhari Amrita, Kaifi Aur Main, Ismat Aapa Ke Naam and many others showcased in America.

She also brought some of the very impressive Gujarati plays to America, a segment that was not properly represented in terms of the depth it had. She was also the first one to bring Gujarati musicals to America. Gujarati plays such as Eva Mumbai Maan Chal Jaaye and many other highly evolved offerings from Gujarati theatre were shown to audiences in America through her efforts. After creating a niche in terms of theatre representation from India, she forayed into another exciting journey – that of bringing the finest from the South Asian cinema to be screened in America. As a co-founder of South Asian Film Festival in Chicago, Ketki and her team are continually trying to give a platform to independent cinema from South Asia and to also educate the West on the real dynamics of story telling from that side of the world. Today she effectively balances her creative pursuits along with taking care of her loving family in Chicago. Talking about her journey Parikh says, “The greatest reward for me

US Senate rejects proposal to repeal Obamacare Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, sided with all Democrats in opposition, meaning all remaining Republicans, and Pence were necessary to pass the motion IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S Senate Republicans have voted in favor of a floor debate on their efforts to re-write healthcare policy, with Vice President Mike Pence breaking the tie. The Senate this week decisively rejected a Republican proposal to repeal-and-replace Obamacare as Senator John McCain returned from Arizona to applause from fellow senators to cast a critical vote for Republicans, CNN reported. Two GOP senators — Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski — sided with all Democrats in opposition, meaning all remaining Republicans and Pence were necessary for the motion to pass. The vote came as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and President Donald Trump dared their fellow Republicans to block their seven-year campaign promise to repeal and replace Obamacare. The vote dealt with a measure that combined a previous Senate proposal known as the Better Care

The US Senate voted 51-50 to begin a debate on proposals to end Obamacare, as Republicans rallied again to fulfill their seven-year-long promise.

Reconciliation Act — that was rejected by several Republican senators — with $100 billion extra money for people on Medicaid desired by moderate Republicans and a proposal from conservative Senator Ted Cruz to allow barebones health insurance plans. Democrats moved successfully to kill the amendment as it had not

Trump ‘disappointed’ in Sessions, says healthcare vote ‘big step’ WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said he was “disappointed” with Attorney General Jeff Sessions over his recusal in FBI inquiry into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election and called the healthcare procedural vote a ‘big step’. “I am disappointed in the Attorney General. He should not have recused himself,” Trump said during a joint news conference with the Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri this week, hours after firing off his latest missive targeting Sessions. “If he was going to recuse himself, he should have told me prior to taking office and I would have quite simply picked someone else,” CNN quoted the President as saying. Pressed further on whether he wants Sessions to resign, Trump simply added once more that he is “very disappointed” in Sessions. Trump said he also hopes Sessions will crack down on what “leaks” from various intelligence agencies. “I want the Attorney General to be much tougher on the leaks from intelligence agencies,” Trump said. “These are intelligence agencies.

been officially scored by the Congressional Budget Office and hence didn’t meet the complicated reconciliation rules to consider the bill. The senators cast a vote on a “repeal-only” proposal and the bill was thus defeated by 55-45 votes in the Republican-majority senate. Trump, who has repeatedly said he was ready to sign any repeal legisla-

tion, celebrated the vote, which creates a path to give him the major congressional victory that’s eluded the White House thus far. “I’m very happy to announce that with zero of the Democrats’ votes, the motion to proceed on healthcare has moved past and now we move forward towards truly great healthcare for the American people. We look forward to that. This was a big step,” Trump said. “I want to thank Senator John McCain,” he added. “A very brave man. He made a tough trip to get here.” But Trump also acknowledged there’s a long road ahead for the legislation and criticized the two Republicans for opposing the motion. “We had two Republicans that went against us, which is very sad, I think,” Trump said. “I believe now we will, over the next week or two, come up with a plan that’s going to be really, really wonderful for the American people,” the US president said in a statement.

‘Transgenders not allowed in US army’ WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump tweeted this week that transgender individuals would be prohibited from serving in the US military, saying he made the decision after consulting with Generals and military experts. Trump said his administration would not allow transgenders to serve in any capacity in the US armed forces. “Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming... victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you,” Trump wrote on his personal Twitter account. In June 2016, then-US Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced that, “effective immediately”, transgender individuals currently on military duty would be able to serve openly. He said then that the services would begin allowing transgenders to join the armed forces starting on July 1, 2017. But hours before that deadline, on June 30, 2017, the Pentagon announced a delay in its transgender recruitment policy until January 1, 2018. “Services will review their accession plans (for transgender applicants) providing input on the impact to the readiness and lethality of our forces,” the Pentagon said then.

US House passes Russia sanctions bill defying President Trump IANS, WASHINGTON

T We cannot have that happen.” On healthcare, Trump thanked Senator John McCain and all the Republicans, noting that “we passed it without one Democratic vote”, CBS News reported. He also congratulated the American people, saying: “We’re going to give you great health care.” “Now we move forward towards truly great health care for the American people,” he said. “We look forward to that. This was a big step.” Besides, Trump and Hariri also discussed terrorism issues.

he US House of Representatives has overwhelmingly approved a new sweeping package of sanctions against Russia for its interference in the 2016 US presidential election, despite President Donald Trump objecting to the legislation. Congressmen voted 419-3 to pass the bill this week, with three Republicans — Justin Amash, Jimmy Duncan and Thomas Massie — voting against the bill. The bill gives Congress the power to block any effort by the White House to weaken sanctions on Russia, offering a direct challenge to President Donald Trump’s authority, CNN reported. The overwhelming support for the bill, which was voted under special procedures to pass with a two-thirds majority, forces Trump to obtain lawmakers’ permission before easing any sanctions on Moscow. The measure targets key Russian officials in retaliation for Moscow’s alleged interference in the 2016

US Vice President Mike Pence.

presidential election. It also includes sanctions against Iran and North Korea in response to their weapons programmes. The legislation needs to be passed through the Senate before it can be sent on to the President to be signed. The White House said it was reviewing the bill, and it was unclear whether Trump will veto it. “While the President supports tough sanctions on North Korea, Iran and Russia, the White House is reviewing the House legislation

and awaits a final legislative package for the President’s desk,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said. “He has no intention of getting rid of them, but he wants to make sure we get the best deal for the American people possible,” she added. “Congress does not have the best record on that... He’s going to study that legislation and see what the final product looks like,” Sanders further said

Nitish shuns Lalu, joins Modi In a quick turn of events, Nitish Kumar resigns and takes oath as Bihar CM again with BJP support

Kerala JD-U rebels against Nitish

IANS, PATNA

I

n a dramatic turn of events, Nitish Kumar took oath as Bihar Chief Minister at the head of a JD-U-BJP government, within hours of dumping the Grand Alliance with Lalu Prasad Yadav at its helm. This is the JD-U President’s second innings in the last two years. He snapped ties late on Wednesday with Grand Alliance partners Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress over corruption charges against RJD leader and Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav. The Raj Bhavan here echoed with chants of “Nitish Kumar Zindabad” as Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi administered the oath to Nitish Kumar. BJP’s Sushil Kumar Modi was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister. The BJP offered support to Nitish Kumar after he resigned as Chief Minister on Wednesday. Nitish Kumar took the oath in Hindi. This is the JD-U’s second innings with the BJP in the state. Nitish Kumar had in 2013 ended his party’s association with the BJP after the party projected Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 general election. Meanwhile, venting his ire on the JD-U chief for dumping the Grand Alliance, RJD chief Lalu Prasad alleged that Nitish Kumar

had “conspired” with the BJP to get graft cases filed against his family by central investigation agencies. “Nitish Kumar has cheated the people of Bihar. I charge that he (Nitish Kumar) colluded with BJP to file CBI cases against me and my family,” Lalu Prasad told reporters after appearing before a CBI court here in a fodder scam case. He said that Sushil Modi, who was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister, was asked to run a cam-

Shabir Shah, 7 others held for terror funding NEW DELHI: Days after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested seven key Kashmiri separatists on charges of receiving funds from Pakistan to sponsor terror activities and stone-pelting protests in the Kashmir Valley, the Enforcement Directorate has also arrested Shabir Shah — one of the founders of Kashmiri separatism. Shah, who was taken into custody from Srinagar on money laundering charges in a case dating back to 2005, was brought on Wednesday afternoon to Delhi where a court allowed the Enforcement Directorate to question him for seven days in its custody. Police sources in Srinagar said ED officials executed a non-bailable warrant issued against Shah by a Delhi court. Shah, 64, the founding chairman of Democratic Freedom Party (DFP), was earlier associated with the Jammu and Kashmir People’s League.

Earlier, Nayeem Khan, Altaf Ahmad Shah, Aftab Hilali Shah alias Shahid-ul-Islam, Ayaz Akbar Khandey, Peer Saifullah and Raja Mehrajuddin Kalwal were arrested from Srinagar while Farooq Ahmad Dar alias Bitta Karate was arrested from Delhi. paign to damage the image of his family members. The CBI, ED and the Income Tax department have filed cases of corruption against the family members of Lalu Prasad, including his wife Rabri Devi, his youngest son Tejashwi Yadav, who was Bihar Deputy Chief Minister until Wednesday, and daughter Misa Bharti. Describing Nitish Kumar as ‘Bhasmasur’, Lalu Prasad said, “I made him the Chief Minister despite my party being the single

biggest party in the state. “I was not selfish,” he said. “Everything was fixed,” Lalu Prasasd said, adding, “He is a very big opportunist. The mandate we got was against the BJP and the RSS. We jointly made them return empty handed from Bihar (during the 2015 Assembly election).” He also claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah were “jealous” of him. “They knew that my base is unshakable. I never gave Nitish Kumar any problems,” he added.

NEW DELHI/THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Janata Dal-United (JD-U) unit in Kerala on July 27 opposed Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for tying up with the BJP and announced it was severing ties with him. The chief of the party’s Kerala unit, M.P. Veerendra Kumar, a Rajya Sabha member, told reporters in Delhi that he was even ready to quit the Upper House to pursue his fight against “fascist forces”. “Whatever the price, we’re ready to pay,” he said. “We are not accepting the JD-U joining the NDA and our relations with Nitish Kumar have ended. It’s shocking that Nitish Kumar has joined the NDA. We all thought that he will fight the fascist tendencies but he has now become a part of it.” Veerendra Kumar said he expected JD-U senior leader Sharad Yadav and its MLAs in Bihar not to accept Nitish Kumar’s decision. “I call upon Sharad Yadav and JD-U MLAs to say that we won’t accept it.” He said he would go back to Kerala after the Vice Presidential election on August 5 and hold a meeting of the state council to decide the future course of action.

considered it my privilege to come to the holy land of Rameswaram,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tamil to the delight of the gathering he addressed here after inaugurating a memorial for late President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. “Nanbargale, vanakkam! Indha punidha sthalamana Rameswaram nagarathuku vandadhai en baghyamaga karudhugiren,” was the opening line in Modi’s 40-minute speech, which was peppered with Tamil words and praise for the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, J. Jayalalitha, and Kalam. “Ramayanathil vanda anil pola (Like the squirrel in Ramayana),” he said, calling upon people to contribute their mite to the building of the nation. “If a squirrel can inspire God, so can 125 crore people get together to realise the dream of Abdul Kalam for a developed India, which the government is working

to achieve by 2022,” Modi said. In the Ramayana, the squirrel is believed to have played a part in helping Lord Rama build the bridge that was used to cross into Lanka to rescue the abducted Sita. Modi referred to Rameswaram as one of the sacred sites of 12 Jyotirlings and said he was happy to inaugurate the train that will connect the town with Ayodhya,

the birthplace of Rama in Uttar Pradesh. He called his presence at five functions as ‘panchamrut’. The Prime Minister spoke about his government’s help to Tamil Nadu through liberal financial assistance in projects like Smart Cities, AMRUT Mission and expansion of Chennai Metro for which Rs 4,000 crore had been given.

A strange skip in Prez’s speech

The curious omission could not have been inadvertent, especially when Deen Dayal Upadhyay’s name was mentioned in the same breath with Mahatama Gandhi’s towards the end of the speech AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

R

am Nath Kovind’s first speech as President was in keeping with his low-key personality. He said all the right things about his illustrious predecessors, including Pranab Mukherjee, and also about Indian poverty and diversity and combining the “wisdom” of ancient Bharat with the science of contemporary India. Similarly, the village panchayats and a digital Republic were described as the “twin pillars” of national life. This two-track approach was also evident in the references to Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel and B.R. Ambedkar when the President was speaking of the years immediately after independence. However, the name of Jawaharlal Nehru, generally regarded as the architect of modern India, was missing from the luminaries mentioned by Ram Nath Kovind. The curious omission could not have been inadvertent, especially when Deen Dayal Upadhyay’s name was mentioned in the same breath with Gandhi’s towards the end of the speech. Evidently, the aversion of the present dispensation towards the founder of the NehruGandhi dynasty has grown stronger of late, considering that Narendra Modi had once spoken of Nehru in

favorable terms in parliament. It may not be out of place to see in the blanking out of one of the famous persons of Indian history both before and after independence as an example of a key feature of the saffron brotherhood to rewrite history in accordance with its own distinctive perception of what the students as well as the people of

India should know. The Hindutva lobby has been feverishly engaged in recent times in pushing its agenda of a new interpretation of history as it apparently believes that the wrong version has been taught for too long a period by the Nehruvians because of their previously privileged position in positions of

power. It was time, therefore, to undo the earlier mistakes. Few would have expected, however, that this desire for change would be articulated by the highest constitutional authority in the land. While lesser functionaries like the state-level ministers may declare that the title of “Great” be attached to the name of Maharana

Pratap and not to Akbar because it was the former who won the battle of Haldighati according to the saffron camp, it is odd for those much higher up in the official hierarchy to display the same bias. It is known that between Nehru and Patel, the latter is the Sangh parivar’s favorite. Not surprisingly, the President referred to the first Deputy Prime Minister’s sterling contributions towards unifying the country in the turbulent post-partition years. Similarly, he mentioned Ambedkar as the principal architect of the constitution. While all of this is in line with the standard account of the immediate post-independence years, the silence on Nehru is strange, to say the least. It is all the more strange since the President had a special word of praise for Upadhyay, whose name is even less known outside the parivar than of V.D. Savarkar and M.S. Golwalkar. The fact that this is Upadhyay’s birth centenary year is not a sufficient reason to place him on the same pedestal as the Father of the Nation. Arguably, the new President can be said to have begun his tenure on the wrong footing by displaying a partisan bias. Even if the speech was written by the government, he could have edited it to make it more statesmanlike.

Promoting Urdu through visual arts 30-year-old Shiraz Husain’s life shuffles between his day-time job as an assistant professor and turns into an artist by night SOMRITA GHOSH, NEW DELHI

T

here was a time when Urdu couplets written by Faiz Ahmed Faiz or Ghalib were read from books or heard at ‘mushairas’ (poetry recitations). But now a Delhi-based artist is giving a pop-culture twist to Urdu literature by taking it to t-shirts, coffee mugs and posters. Meet Shiraz Husain, who is attempting to revive the Urdu language. When pages failed to get enough attention from readers, especially from the youth, Husain adopted the path of the visual arts to reach out to larger audiences. “There are artists like Faiz

Ahmed Faiz, Manto, Amrita Pritam, Jaun Eliya, Parveen Shakir, Mukti Bodh who are less celebrated. My attempt is to draw much deserved attention towards Urdu and try to revive its fading glamour,” Husain told IANS. The 30-year-old artist’s life shuffles between his day-time job at Jamia Milia Islamia where he is an assistant professor — of applied art, what else — and turns into an artist by night. All the illustrations available, be it on mug or t-shirt, are done by him. He said, “I often see youngsters wearing t-shirts of Che Guevara or Bob Marley. I thought why not bring in Urdu poets and writers on

tees and coffee mugs. These artists are never celebrated much; why not make them more popular?” Husain has been selling his products through a community page on social media platform Facebook titled “Khwaab Tanha Collections”. His project is not just about recollecting the quotes by poets and writers but he also adds illustrations to his work, giving people the face behind those lines. “Many people don’t even know how poets like Majaz Lakhnawi and Ramadhir Singh ‘Dinkar’ look like. So my focus was not just on the lines of poetry, but I also want readers to know the artists

by face,” he said. Husain feels that the mushaira culture is now fading away and hard to find, and old languages are

struggling to exist as readers are fast disappearing or are they often identified with a particular community.

Where have 39 Indians gone? External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said she would not declare the 39 Indians missing in Iraq as dead till she has concrete evidence to that effect IANS, NEW DELHI

Iraqi Minister flip-flops over whereabouts of missing Indians

E

xternal Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on July 27 said she would not declare the 39 Indians missing in Iraq as dead till she has concrete evidence to that effect. "I repeat, I will not declare them (the missing Indians) dead until we have concrete evidence to that effect," she told Rajya Sabha. The Minister said that she "never said in Parliament or outside that they are alive, as being claimed by some Congress MPs". There were some sharp exchanges between the Minister and Congress members Pratap Singh Bajwa and Ambika Soni as the latter accused the government of "shifting goal posts" and demanded to know why she was not trusting the word of Harjit Masih, one of the 40 Indians captured by the Islamic State in Iraq in June 2014, who claimed that the rest of the group had been shot dead. "Why would Harjit Masih tell a lie? What would he get out of it?" Bajwa asked. "I have reasons to not trust Harjit Masih. I was the first one to speak with him when he first contacted Indian authorities soon after the incident,” Sushma Swaraj said. “I repeatedly asked him over phone as to how he survived when the rest were shot dead according to him. But he kept saying he did not know," Sushma Swaraj added. "Secondly, the family of Nishan Singh, one of the missing persons, says they spoke with him on June 17 (2014). How is this possible when Harjit claims they were

Families keep fingers crossed CHANDIGARH: Families of 39 Indians, mostly from Punjab, who went missing in Iraq’s Mosul town three years ago are still keeping their fingers crossed even after Iraqi Foreign Minister on July 24 said that he was not sure if the missing Indians were alive or not. “We can only hope for the return of our loved ones. We have been going through this torture for the past over three years,” said Manjit Kaur, whose

NEW DELHI: In a flip-flop, Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari said here on July 24 that the 39 Indians missing in the city of Mosul since 2014 are considered alive, after having said earlier in the day his government was not 100 per cent sure about this. “We are trying to follow news gained through intelligence sources, and we consider that all the Indians are alive,” al-Jaafari told the media. He also said that the Iraqi government had financial incentives for people who could help locate those 39 Indians. He said that the IS was known for spreading fake news and that the Iraqi government checked such information from its own sources while expressing hope that the 39 Indians were alive. Earlier in the day, following a meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, al-Jaafari said: “I am not 100 per cent sure if the 39 Indians missing in Mosul are alive.

for them until I get concrete proof that they are dead," Sushma Swaraj said. She said that according to the information that has been received, the group was caught at the Mosul airfield, and taken to a jail, after which they were put to construction work, and then farming, before being taken to Badush jail in 2016. But after that there has been no contact. The Minister said that all the information was culled from dif-

We are trying our best (to trace them).” Most of the 39 Indian construction workers who went missing in 2014 are from Punjab. Al-Jaafari’s comments came after Indian Minister of State for External Affairs V.K. Singh visited Iraq after Iraqi forces aided by an international coalition liberated Mosul from the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization on July 9. Sushma Swaraj had earlier said that with the freeing of Mosul, the process to trace and rescue the missing Indians would be taken forward. She said they had information that the Indians were in a jail in Badush, which lies in ruins now. Singh was earlier sent to Erbil in Iraq to pursue the case of the missing Indians. On July 12, Singh visited the Kurdish Peshmarga frontline in Mosul area to seek information about the Indians. He said some IS-held areas were still being cleared. —IANS

ferent sources and there was no evidence to support any of the claims. Following reports in the media that the Badush jail building had been demolished, the Minister was blamed for misleading the nation on the 39 Indians. Also, Minister of State for External Affairs V.K. Singh is to travel to Badush near Mosul, which was freed from Islamic State control earlier this month, the Ministry of External Affairs said on July 27.

Sikh asked to take off Alphabet appoints Pichai Indian citizen sentenced Indian Muslim teenager kirpan in New Zealand to its board of directors to jail for 30 months in US in UK raped, murdered WELLINGTON: A Sikh man in New Zealand’s Auckland city was asked to take off his kirpan and get down from a bus after a panicked passenger called police on seeing the ceremonial dagger, a media report said. Police boarded a busy commuter bus in Auckland on July 24 after a passenger was seen carrying kirpan, traditionally worn by Sikhs. “We looked out the window and we could see and the police car behind us with sirens blaring and armed men all around us. One policeman stormed into the bus with a gun in his hand and said to the guy, ‘Get your hands up so we can see them and get out of the bus’,” New Zealand Herald quoted a witness as saying.

SAN FRANCISCO: Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, has appointed Indian-born Google CEO Sundar Pichai to its board of directors. “Sundar has been doing a great job as Google’s CEO, driving strong growth, partnerships and tremendous product innovation,” said Larry Page, CEO of Alphabet, in a statement. “I really enjoy working with him and I’m excited that he is joining the Alphabet board,” Page added. As Google’s CEO, Pichai is responsible for Google’s product development and technology strategy, as well as the company’s day-to-day operations.

NEW YORK: An Indian citizen has been jailed for 30 months by a federal court in Louisiana in the US for illegally selling gun silencers and planning to smuggle more of them disguised as auto parts. Mohit Chauhan, 31, who is from Pitampura in New Delhi and was sentenced on July 25, admitted before federal Judge Elizabeth E. Foote in April that he had dealt with firearms without a license. Alexander C. Van Hook, the acting federal prosecutor for Western Louisiana, said on Wednesday that Chauhan was contacted by someone who wanted to buy silencers and he discussed by email and phone manufacturing silencers for the client.

LONDON: An Indian Muslim teenager was kidnapped, raped and murdered here for having a relationship with an Arab man, a UK court was told. According to the Evening Standard daily, Celine Dookhran, 19, was kidnapped with another woman last week. They were said to have been bound, gagged and kidnapped by masked men. Both women were taken to a house in Kingston-upon-Thames, southwest London, where they were both raped and Dookhran was killed, the court heard. The body of Dookhran was found stuffed in a fridge with her throat slit at a house in London suburb.

Dove of peace? Amid India-China border crisis, Indian NSA Ajit Doval in Beijing for BRICS security meet GAURAV SHARMA, BEIJING

I

ndia’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval reached Beijing to attend a BRICS security summit amid rising bilateral tensions with China over a protracted border stand-off. Officials were tight-lipped about Doval’s expected meeting with China’s top diplomat Yang Jiechi on the sidelines of the two-day summit which began on July 27. “No idea,” an Indian diplomat responded when contacted on the phone. If the two officials meet, the stand-off between their armies in Doklam in the Sikkim sector was certain to be discussed. Doval was scheduled to call on Chinese President Xi Jinping along with the NSAs of the five-member bloc that also comprises - Brazil, Russia and South Africa.

Kim wants to break regional powers’ unity SEOUL: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is attempting to deter unity between South Korea, the US, China, Russia and Japan with a string of belligerent acts, a Kim Jong-un top American military commander said on July 27. General Vincent K. Brooks, who commands US Forces Korea (USFK), was quoted as saying by Yonhap news agency that the Communist regime’s weekly missile tests have become “the new normal”. North Korea testfired 28 ballistic missiles in 2016 alone, followed by 10 others this year, including what was believed to be an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). It was also reportedly preparing for another missile launch, although there was no report of a launch on Thursday, the 64th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Agreement, said the report. “His actions intend to sow friction and fissures among the five in order to prevent them from coming together as a cohesive block,” Gen. Brooks said, addressing a forum under way in US state Nebraska, according to the USFK’s website. “He’s trying to prevent the creation of a closed fist against him,” the commander said, showing the five fingers of his hand to refer to the five countries involved in the now-suspended denuclearization talks with Pyongyang. — IANS

‘Border row may lead to war’ WASHINGTON: A US expert has said that the ongoing border dispute between the Indian and Chinese troops at Doklam in the Sikkim sector could lead to a war. “Yes I do, and I don’t say that lightly,” Jeff M. Smith, a scholar at the American Foreign Policy Council, told The New York Times when he was asked whether he thought the IndiaChina stand-off could spiral into war. “Both sides have taken hardline positions that make it difficult to back down. The messaging is eerily similar,” Smith said, referring to the coun-

EU warns US over Russia sanctions bill IANS, BRUSSELS

T

he European Union this week delivered a stern warning to the US over its plan to impose new sanctions on Russia, opening up the prospect of a rift between the two allies over how to deal with Moscow’s foreign interventions. EU President Jean-Claude Juncker said the bloc would act “within days” if it does not receive reassurances on the potential impact of new sanctions on European interests, CNN reported. Russia also reacted angrily, saying the sanctions bill passed by the US House of Representatives on Tuesday risked worsening the already poor relations between the two countries.

The bill targeted key Russian officials in retaliation for Moscow’s alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election. It also called for new measures against North Korea and Iran. The measure also

limited any effort by the White House to weaken such penalties. The EU had previously coordinated with the US over sanctions in response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. But it

hina has opposed a new round of unilateral sanctions that the US has imposed against North Korea. Such sanctions were not conducive to mutual trust and cooperation between China and the US, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said at a press briefing. “China is always opposed to uni-

lateral sanctions outside the framework of the UNSC and especially opposed to long-arm jurisdiction imposed by other countries on China’s enterprises and individuals,” Kang said. The new sanctions could affect companies from third countries, which trade with North Korea, and especially China, the main trading partner of the isolated regime of Kim Jong-un.

Lu added China has always strictly implemented UN resolutions related to North Korea and

feared the latest measures could hit companies that were involved in the financing of a controversial new pipeline, Nord Stream 2, that would carry natural gas from Russia to Germany. Juncker said the bill could have “unintended unilateral effects” on the EU’s energy security. “This is why the Commission concluded today that if our concerns are not taken into account sufficiently, we stand ready to act appropriately within a matter of days,” he said. The bill awaits a final vote in the Senate before it can be presented to US President Donald Trump. Trump did not indicate whether he will sign the bill, which also gives Congress a way to block any easing of new sanctions against Russia, North Korea and Iran. will investigate suspected violations of sanctions by Chinese enterprises or individuals according to its own domestic law. The US House of Representatives, with Republican majority, had approved new sanctions against North Korea, Iran and Russia. The House also limited the Donald Trump government’s power to lift sanctions, amid the President’s intentions to relax US policy towards Russia. The sanctions come at a time when the international community fears North Korea is preparing for new missile tests. “We firmly oppose any words and deeds that may heighten the tension,” Lu said.

SIT officials this week grilled actor P. Navdeep for over 11 hours. matographer Shyam K. Naidu were interrogated last week. Actress Charmme Kaur was also questioned by a four-member team of women officers this week. The court had asked the SIT not to collect Charmme’s blood, hair and nail samples without her consent. It, however, rejected her plea to allow the presence of her lawyer during the questioning.

The officials hope to gather significant clues from Charmme. She is the seventh celebrity from Telugu film industry to appear before the SIT. Enforcement, Prohibition and Excise Director Akun Sabharwal had clarified that the SIT is collecting the samples only with the written consent of the persons questioned.

HYDERABAD: Leading actress Kajal Aggarwal this week said she was shocked by the arrest of her manager in connection with a drug racket. Her manager Puttkar Ronson Joseph alias Johny Joseph alias Ronnie was arrested from his house in Manikonda here this week by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the racket. Officials said narcotic substances were recovered from his possession. Kajal said in a post on social media that she doesn’t support any activity detrimental to the society. “I am absolutely shocked and appalled about this whole incident with Ronnie. I’m in zero support of this and any behavior that is detrimental to the hygiene of our society.

CHENNAI: A.R. Rahman has shared the poster of the Daughters of Destiny, documentary series to be released via Netflix this week. It features music by the double Oscar-winning composer, popularly known as the Mozart of Madras. Rahman tweeted the poster of the documentary. Directed by Academy award-winning Vanessa Roth, the documentary will focus on Bengaluru-based school Shanti Bhavan, which provides free education to under-privileged children. The lives of the children studying in this school will be brought to life through this project. The story follows five girls from India’s impoverished families as they study and strive for a brighter future. On the career front, Rahman is busy with Tamil projects Mersal, Sanghamitra and 2.o, apart from Majid Majidi’s Beyond the Clouds. —IANS

Having said that, just because I care for people who run errands for me does not imply that I can control their personal lives/choices,” Kajal said in the statement on Twitter. “My parents have always managed my career and with everyone else from my industry. I’m unaware of their whereabouts and activities once their professional duties with regard to me are completed,” she added.

Prabhudheva had earlier told IANS that he would like to dedicate the film to Subash. “When I met him last year, he told me he wasn’t sure if he would be around to see the film. ‘Indu Sarkar’ gets U/A certificate Madhur Bhandarkar’s controversial film cleared by censor board with two cuts and one disclaimer IANS, NEW DELHI

ilmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar is happy that his film Indu Sarkar has finally been cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) Revising Committee with U/A certificate, two cuts and one disclaimer, which he says haven’t taken the essence of the movie away. However, he is disappointed that nobody from the film fraternity raised their voice over the controversy around the movie. Asked about the number of cuts that the film has finally got, Bhandarkar told IANS on July 25: “It has been passed by the Revising Committee of the CBFC with a U/A certificate. They have given the film two cuts, have asked to beep a few words and want us to put one disclaimer.” On being prodded about the details of the cuts, he said: “Let’s leave that... People will have strong reations to it. It’s a film about peace, about humanity. It’s intended to unite people rather than divide. Some people want to say something... that’s really their choice,” she told the media here on Wednesday in response to the criticism it has garnered.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on July 27 refused to stay the release of filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar’s movie Indu Sarkar, which deals with the Emergency imposed in 1975 by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. A bench of Justice Dipak Misra, Justice Amitav Roy and Justice A.M. Khanwilkar, dismissed the plea filed by a woman who claims to be the biological daughter of late Congress leader Sanjay Gandhi. “The movie is an artistic expression within the parameters of law,” said the bench while dismissing the plea of Priya Singh Paul. Paul has told the court that the film was “full of concoction and totally derogatory” to malign the image of Sanjay Gandhi and his mother, Indira Gandhi. The petitioner moved the top court as Bombay High Court had dismissed her plea on July 24.

But they must have had their own problems. That’s why you get angry when you see such selective activism,” Bhandarkar said. “Today what has happened to me, might happen with somebody else tomorrow. So, if you will support people as per your convenience, that won’t work. Really this has saddened me as I wanted the film fraternity to come on a stage or tweet about this film, but that didn’t happen,” Bhandarkar lamented. “The kind of atmosphere that was created in Nagpur and Pune — that’s really sad,” Bhandarkar added about the protests in both cities.

I immediately took charge and began working to the best of my abilities. “If now I am asked to leave, I’d do so just as swiftly, wishing my successor all the best.” There have been controversies galore over film content during Nihalani’s stint as CBFC chief. Movies like Udta Punjab, Haraamkhor, Lipstick Under My Burkha and Indu Sarkar are cases in point. But Nihalani feels a lot of ground has been covered by the CBFC in the two-and-half years of his stewardship.

But lack of funds and no real qualifications for a corporate job, push Munna into dancing. He takes up dance challenges at the local clubs. Soon he is barred from all dancing bars in Mumbai. Nonplussed, he moves to Delhi to try his luck. While Munna is an excellent dancer and there are lot of dance sequences in the film, we notice something else: The film does not fall into the ancient cliches of dance dramas or dance competitions. Instead, it turns out to be a corny pot-boiler crammed with romance and bromance.

Chicago is a city bustling with many cultures, communities and cultural markers that celebrate the many vibrant sides of the various societies that collectively call it home. It is a city of art, culture, museums and interesting tales that make it an interesting cornucopia. It was these qualities about the city that made it easier for theatre personality Ketki Parikh, to fall in love with Chicago, when she first came here from India three decades ago.And even though, Ketki admits that the city was very different from what it is now, as it happens to any place over time, she did notice that people were interested in knowing the aspects of other cultures and their practices.

CULTURAL CONNECT comes in the form of compliments. When stalwarts like Shabana Azmi and Seema Biswas say that if it wasn’t for Ketki’s efforts, we would have never been able to show out theater in America, that for me is the biggest assurance that my hard work has paid-off.”

W

ith an avid interest in performing arts and an impressive background in experimental theatre back home in Ahmedabad, India, it was natural for Ketki to notice the void in the representation of the rich offerings of Indian theatre in America.

CHICAGO RESIDENT KETKI PARIKH WAS THE FIRST EVER INDIAN TO BRING MEANINGFUL INDIAN THEATRE TO AMERICA BACK IN THE 90’S WITH HER THEATRE VENTURE VACHIKAM. AS A CO-FOUNDER OF CHICAGO SOUTH ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL SHE CONTINUES HER EFFORTS TO SHOWCASE TO THE WORLD THE MANY FACETS OF SOUTH ASIAN CINEMA.QWA cinema around that time though she admits those were small roles mainly done for friends who requested her. She says, “I have never been interested in acting in films as I thought theatre and live performance is my true calling. Honestly I still get offers for acting in many Indian films through friends, which I keep politely refusing.” She also has been a TV news presenter

BIRTH OF VACHIKAM A couple of years later my husband ecided to set up his office in Chicago, e had some family here too so we came o a new country, she says. She adds, “I as a young mom to a 2 year old and djusting to a new city and new life kept me busy for some time. Ketki also had her cond baby while in Chicago, but the new mom was unstoppable. Carefully balancing er mother duties alongside looking for creative outlet she got involved with ndia Development Service in Chicago a board member. She says, “We did a ot of fundraising and events and it was tisfying to see my work making a difference.” Around this time, Ketki would always otice how Chicago had everything but here was a void when it came to what people new about Indian theatre. She shares, “Once was speaking with Paresh Rawal, and I member telling him how Chicago had hazal nights but no theatre from India. To hich he replied why don’t you start that? I as stumped but eventually we did move in hat direction.” We formally started my company in 995, which was called Vachikam on Paresh awal’s suggestion. The first play we got to hicago was Paresh Rawal’s Maharathi and e did a national tour. During those days here was little awareness about Indian theatre n America and finding and informing the udiences was a challenge.”

back in 1992 with Shabana Azmi during my time with India development Service. The show was sold out event that we did for fund raising. Shabana Azmi was a big name and the experience gave me a lot of hope that there is a demand for good theatre in America. I am glad that I was right.” From mid nineties through 2000s Ketki and her venture Vachikam contined bringing meaningful theatre from India to America. Personalities such as Naseeruddin Shah, Satish Kaushik, Ratna Pathak Shah visited the states and their performances showed not just to Indian Americans but also to Americans the wealth that Indian theatre had to offer.” Ketki has been involved in other pursuits too as back in 2001 she joined Apna Ghar where she organized many events, fundraisers and had even had the opportunity of inviting Barack Obama, then senator as a key note speaker. She also conceptualized events such as Taste of Life, which is a unique culinary cause program, and now a signature event for Apna Ghar. SOUTH ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL Ketki says that she was lucky to tap the market when the time was right. She thought of bringing theatre to US when no one was doing it. Today there are many such events all across the country. Around this time she also focused her energies on how the right representation of cinema from South Asia was lacking in America. hief Minister Manohar Parrikar said this week that police would crack down within “three-four days” on those behind the desecration of graves in a Catholic cemetery in Madkai village of Goa. The new case comes after the Goa Police claimed last week that the arrest of 50-year-old Francis Pereira would end the series of desecrations in the state. In the latest incident, nearly a dozen crosses were damaged at the cemetery near Fatima Chapel in Madkai, located 35 km from Panaji. Responding to comments by opposition MLAs during zero

PANAJI: Questioned repeatedly over the BJP-led Goa government’s alleged proximity to the casino lobby in the state, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has said a new policy will soon cap the number of casinos in a particular area. He also said that Goans will be barred from visiting the gaming areas. Replying to a debate in the state assembly on Home Ministry-related issues, Parrikar said all the five operational offshore casinos housed currently in Mandovi river would be forced to relocate.

Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar raised the issue of mass desecration of graves. “People are worried because the latest incident has happened while Francis Pereira who was arrested recently for allegedly single-handedly destroying religious structures, is in police custody,” Kavlekar, a Congress MLA, said. He also said the latest desecration incident proved that there was more than one person involved in the serial desecration incidents in Goa, in connection with which Pereira was arrested last week. Parrikar also told the House that Pereira during his interrogation had confessed to desecrating 146 religious structures across Goa.

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- An Indian man, who was ordered deported, has been convicted for using a fake identity to obtain American

citizenship. Balbir Singh, aka Ranjit Singh, 50, faces up to 10 years in federal prison, a maximum $250,000 possible fine, revocation of his citizenship and enforcement of his outstanding deportation order. According to acting US Attorney Abe Martinez, Balbir Singh had previously attempted to obtain asylum under false pretenses. When that attempt failed, an immigration judge then ordered his deportation from the US, thus making him ineligible to ever become a naturalized citizen. A resident of Houston, Texas, Singh, instead of leaving the country, changed his name, date of birth, the manner in which he entered the US and his familial history so that he could obtain lawful immigration status, and later naturalization, based on a marriage to a US citizen. In the process of obtaining the citizenship, he denied ever being ordered deported, seeking asylum or using a different identity.

In it, he complained about the anxiety and frustration he experienced in having to wait for an extended period at the airport every time he returned from an international trip due to discrepancies in his biometric information. He requested DHS clear these discrepancies,”

the Justice Department said. After obtaining citizenship, a fingerprint comparison established that Balbir Singh, the man previously ordered deported from the US and the man who later became a naturalized citizen (Ranjit Singh) were one and the same. Memory, mind science workshop in Atlanta BY A STAFF WRITER UWANEE, GA -- Ripples of Revolution were created by WAVE Global LLC in Atlanta (Suwanee), GA. One of the fastest-growing counties in the US experienced something much bigger this week. The Memory & Mind Science workshop, ‘Program your Brain & Mind for Success’, organized in Atlanta (Suwanee), GA last week has shown mesmerizing results. A total of 39 participants including children & teens (7yrs to 17 yrs.) attended the 5 day workshop camp last week in Holiday Inn Express & Suites, Suwanee. WAVE Global LLC is now taking this very powerful workshop next to Denver-CO even as participants in Atlanta, GA are eagerly awaiting next series of workshops so parents, teachers and students can continue to experience the transformational results and sustain the high quality of learning they received during the workshops. WAVE Global LLC is an organization founded on the core belief that everyone in the world has at least 10 times more potential than

S

what gets realized or unleashed during their lifetime. The untapped or dormant potential stays so because education systems in most parts of the world lean towards grading and rating systems to measure effectiveness. This approach keeps focus only on the information required for grades. This gradingbased approach potentially deprives the world of creativity, clarity, innovation, new inventions, new discoveries because our future generation is too busy trying to secure higher grades instead of unleashing their higher possibilities. WAVE Global LLC believes academic excellence and professional success can be easily

attained if we shift our approach from the current input-based learning system that focuses only on certain subjects & topics to an outcome focused learning that helps bring about the qualities we seek from our future generations, such as confidence, courage, courtesy, fairness, accountability, love, and peace. WAVE framework (Wisdom Anchored Values Education) was developed by its founder, Mohan Naidu after more than 20 years of experience implementing it in his personal and professional life as a successful management consultant in Asia-Pacific, Europe, and NorthAmerica.

acer Mohammed Shami's twin strikes in a single over put India in the driver's seat in the opening cricket Test as Sri Lanka lost five quick wickets to totter at 154/5 at stumps on the second day at the Galle International Stadium here on July 27. The home side lost three wickets in quick succession to find themselves trailing by 446 runs in their first innings, with former skipper Angelo Mathews (54) and Dilruwan Perera (6) unbeaten at stumps. Shami dealt crucial blows to register figures of 2/30 while fellow pacer Umesh Yadav and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin bagged a wicket each. India opener Abhinav Mukund made things worse for the hosts by effecting the run-

shaky start, losing opener Dimuth Karunaratne (2), debutant Danushka Gunathilaka (16) and Kusal Mendis (0) in the first 15 overs. Karunaratne was trapped leg

Pandya's halfcentury was laced with five boundaries and three sixes while Shami slammed three sixes in his cameo with a strike rate of 100.00. before Mukund's brilliant throw sent back the newly-appointed Sri Lanka One-Day International (ODI) skipper. Mukund's throw from silly point to stumper Wriddhiman

Incoming batsman Niroshan Dickwella (8) was caught brilliantly by Mukund after he failed to block the ball and managed only to get the outside edge off a delivery by tweaker Ashwin. Earlier, a 62-run ninth-wicket stand between debutant Hardik Pandya (50) and Shami (30) helped India post 600 in their first essay. Pandya's half-century was laced with five boundaries and three sixes while Shami slammed three sixes in his cameo. Resuming the day at 399/3, the overnight duo of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane batted cautiously with the Saurashtra right-hander crossing the 150-run mark while Rahane too got to his half-century.

Djokovic to miss play BCCI adopts Lodha committee reforms with elbow injury IANS, NEW DELHI

BELGRADE: Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic has announced that he is set to miss the rest of the season due to an injury to his right elbow. In a Facebook Live broadcast, the former world no. 1 said that all the doctors he had consulted had informed him that recovering from this injury requires time, reports Efe. “All the doctors I’ve consulted, and all the specialists I have visited, in Serbia and all over the world, have agreed that this injury requires rest,” 12-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic said. The 30-year-old was forced to withdraw from the 2017 Wimbledon quarter-finals against Czech Tomas Berdych because of this injury, just as things seemed to be getting better. Djokovic arrived at the All England Club with the Eastbourne Open title in his pocket and put on a good show in the first rounds at Wimbledon, dispelling doubts about his poor performance before injury stopped, not just his run at the third Grand Slam of the year, but also put an end to his season. “My elbow is hurt due to excessive playing, and it troubles me constantly when serving, and now when hitting my forehand as well. Unfortunately, such injuries are often encountered in a professional sport, and I am very proud of the fact that I have been free from serious injuries during all these years,” Djokovic added. “A prolonged break from the sport

T

he BCCI Special General Meeting (SGM) this week decided to accept all the recommendations put forward by the Supreme Court-appointed Justice R.M. Lodha Committee except for five contentious points. According to sources, the suggestions that are being opposed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are one-state-onevote, the size of the national selection panel, the size of the apex council, age cap and tenure of office-bearers and distribution of

R.M. Lodha

powers and functions of executives. The clause regarding age and tenure seeks to prevent those above 70 years of age from holding any

post in the BCCI or state associations while also imposing a cooling off period of three years between two terms. If the Supreme Court decides to revisit this particular point, it may allow former BCCI chief N. Srinivasan and secretary Niranjah Shah to attempt a comeback. Both are above 70 years of age and do not qualify to be BCCI office-bearers as per the Lodha Committee recommendations. The Supreme Court delivered a ruling earlier this week, barring the controversial duo from attending any BCCI meeting.

ndian women’s cricket skipper Mithali Raj, who recently led the eves to the final of the ICC Women’s World Cup in England supported an Indian Premier League (IPL)-styled T20 tournament for the women but left it for the BCCI to decide. Mithali had earlier called for a women’s IPL to help the Indian girls cope up with high pressure situations, especially after the women-in-blue squandered a great start to narrowly lose Sunday’s World Cup final by nine runs against hosts England at the Lord’s. When the same question was put to the 34-year-old right-hander after the team landed here on Wednesday, she said: “If something like this is started in India, it will

times for women’s cricket in India. The Indian eves outclassed pretournament favourites Australia in the semi-final and before that thrashed New Zealand by 186 runs to reach the knock-outs.

Researchers generate human antibodies in lab

The technique, reported in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, could potentially accelerate the development of new vaccines by allowing the efficient evaluation of candidate target antigens, it is claimed. The researchers, from Francis Crick Institute in London and the Ragon Institute of Massachusetts General Hospital in the US, successfully demonstrated their approach using various bacterial and viral antigens and proteins from several strains of influenza A. In each case, the researchers were able to produce specific high-affinity antibodies in just a few days and were also able to generate antibodies against HIV (which causes AIDS) from B-cells isolated from HIV-free patients.

Novel eye test may help diagnose autism IANS, NEW YORK

A

new eye test that can reveal impairment in cerebellum may help identify people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), researchers say. The cerebellum — part of the brain coordinating and regulating muscular activity — controls the actions of rapid eye movements made when shifting attention from one object to other, called saccades. In healthy individuals, these saccades are rapid, precise, and accu-

rate, redirecting the line of sight from one point of interest to other. Conversely, in individuals with autism, the activity was found impaired, as a result of alteration in the structure of the cerebellum, said researchers from the University of Rochester in New York, US. For the study, detailed in the European Journal of Neuroscience, the team tracked the eye movements of individuals with ASD. The participants were asked to track a visual target that appeared in different locations on the screen.

Eye test revealing impairment in cerebellum may help identify people with ASD.

The experiment was designed in a manner that often caused the participant’s focus to “overshoot” the intended target. As the task is repeated, the brain would adjust the eye movements in

healthy individuals. But, the eye movements of individuals with ASD continued to miss the target suggesting that the sensory motor controls in the cerebellum responsible for eye movement were impaired.

Maternal high-fat diet may affect kids’ mental health IANS, NEW YORK

B

abies whose mothers consumed a high-fat diet during their pregnancy may be at an increased risk of developing mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression, a study has warned. The findings, of an animal study, showed that an unhealthy diet not only creates health problems for expectant mothers, but

also alters childrens’ development of the brain and endocrine system which may cause long-lasting mental health ramifications. “Given the high level of dietary fat consumption and maternal obesity in developed nations, these findings have important implications for the mental health of future generations,” said Elinor Sullivan, assistant professor at the Oregon Health and Science Uni-

LONDON: An individual suffering from depression may be at an increased risk of developing changes in the structure of the brain associated with communication and thinking skills, researchers say. The findings showed that alterations were found in parts of the brain known as white matter, which contains fiber tracts that enable brain cells to communicate with one another by electrical signals. White matter is a key component of the brain’s wiring and its disruption has been linked to problems with emotion processing and thinking skills, the researchers said. Further, people with symptoms indicative of depression also had reductions in white matter integrity — a quality of the matter, which was not seen in people who were unaffected. “This study shows that people with depression have changes in the white matter wiring of their brain,” said Heather Whalley, senior research fellow at the University of Edinburgh. Depression is the world’s leading cause of disability, affecting around a fifth of UK adults over a lifetime. Symptoms include low mood, exhaustion and feeling of emptiness. For the study, published in Scientific Reports, the team analyzed 3461 people using an MRI-based neuroimaging technique to map the structure of white matter. “There is an urgent need to provide treatment for depression and an improved understanding of its mechanisms will give us a better chance of developing new and more effective methods of treatment,” Whalley said.

versity (OHSU) in the US. Further, exposure to a high-fat diet during gestation and early in development impaired the development of neurons containing serotonin — a neurotransmitter that is critical in developing brains. On the other hand, introducing the child to a healthy diet at an early age also failed to reverse the effect, the researchers said. “It’s not about blaming the mother,” but “about educating pregnant women about the potential risks of a high-fat diet in pregnancy and empowering them and their families to make healthy choices . We also need to craft public policies promoting healthy lifestyle and diets,” Sullivan noted.
