‘We have put unprecedented resources at the borders, and you’ve seen the results. We have fewer folks coming in than ever before’ on May 13 during a meeting with leaders of law enforcement. The president wants to give another push to the immigration debate and once again called on the Republican-controlled House of Representatives to bring to a vote something compatible with the bipartisan bill that was approved by the Senate a year ago. Obama insisted in his meeting that border security is a priority for his government with-

‘Search engine manipulation can swing votes’ Over 100,000 Indians studying in US, says report IANS, WASHINGTON

ith 113,813 Indians studying in America, India is second only to China with 290,133 students among more than a million international students enrolled in nearly 9,000 US schools, according to a new report. As of April 1, 75 percent of all international students in US schools using an F (academic) or M (vocational) visa were from Asia, said the US Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) report. Of them, 29 percent were from China followed by 11 percent from India, said the. quarterly report compiled by U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Saudi Arabia and India had the greatest percentage increase of stu-

dents studying in the U.S. at 10 and eight percent, respectively, when compared to January statistics. The top 10 countries of citizenship for international students

included: China, India, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Mexico and Brazil. The April report also reveals that 24 percent of all international STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) students studying engineering originate from China and India.

A

nalyzing the just concluded Indian election, a U.S. researcher has suggested that altering search results has a major effect on the voting preferences of undecided voters and could swing a close election. Undecided voters paid far more attention to search rankings than previously thought and as such search results can alter the outcome by up to 12 percent in some cases without a majority of the voters realizing it, suggests a study led by Robert Epstein. A senior research psychologist at the California-based American Institute for Behavioral Research and Technology, Epstein wanted to see if the higher ranking of a political candidate had a similar effect on voters as it does in the case of a product. Epstein recruited more than 2,000 undecided voters between the ages of 18 and 70 from 26 of India’s 28 states. The voters were allotted 15 minutes to read search results of a fictitious

search engine called “Kahoolawe”. These favored one of the three leading prime ministerial candidates: Raoul Gandhi of the Congress Party, Arvind Kejriwal of Aaam Aadmi Party or Narendra Modi of Bharatiya Janata Party. Epstein and his team found that the search engine rankings favoring a particular candidate drove around 12 percent of the votes toward that candidate. This ‘Search Engine Manipulation Effect’ or SEME was enough to change the results of elections won by margins of up to 2.9 percent,

they said. “If Google, which has a monopoly on search in India, were to favor one candidate, it could easily put that candidate in office by manipulating search rankings, and no one could counter what they were doing,” said Epstein. In response to Epstein’s latest research, Google officials stated: “Providing relevant answers has been the cornerstone of Google’s approach to search from the very beginning. It would undermine people’s trust in our results and company if we were to change course.”

n an unusual move, the collegium of judges headed by Chief Justice of India RM Lodha has recommended the names of two former solicitors general — RF Nariman and Gopal Subramaniam — to the government for appointment as judges of the Supreme Court. Although all other formalities for appointment of Nariman, 58, and Subramaniam, 56, have been completed, it was not clear whether the government nod would come in the last three days of UPA or whether it would come after a new government takes charge. Unlike in the United States, Supreme Court judges in India are seldom appointed from among members of the bar. Justice N Santosh Hegde was the last lawyer to have been elevated directly to the Supreme Court. benchmark index of Indian equities markets on May 13 crossed the 24,000-point mark for the first time in its history, recording the third straight high. At 24,068.94 points, it was the highest mark so far, surpassing the previous record of 23,573 points hit on May 12 as the exit polls showed the BJP and its allies closing in on a majority in the justended general elections. The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which crossed the 24,000 points in the morning session, opened Tuesday’s trade at 23,729.78 points, and ended trade at 23,871.23 points, a record closing high, up

320.23 points or 1.36 percent from the previous day’s close at 23,551 points. The Sensex touched a high of 24,068.94 points and a low of 23,729.25 points intra-day. “The exit polls, which predicted a victory for the BJP-led NDA, gave further fillip to the markets as they closed at a new record,” said Dipen Shah, head - private client group research, Kotak Securities. “Expectations are now of a stable government at the centre and that has raised hopes of better growth for the economy. The markets have risen based largely on these expectations,” he added. The rally was led by the capital goods, oil and gas, information technology (IT), consumer durables and technology, entertainment and media sectors.

Sonia called the shots: book IANS, NEW DELHI

C

harging the Congress party with becoming less democratic and more centralized, another book by technocrat Arun Maira released on May 13 says that party president Sonia Gandhi was the one who took key decisions on governance. Although such a reference was made in just a few paragraphs in an

otherwise 204-page book, it once again corroborated what Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s media advisor from 2004-2008, academicjournalist Sanjaya Baru said in his recollections. “Sonia Gandhi chose not be become prime minister when

she led the party to a stunning victory in the national elections in 2004. Instead, she anointed a loyal technocrat, Dr Manmohan Singh, as the prime minister, while she has called the shots on all important appointments and policies,” says Maira in the book: Redesigning the Aeroplane while Flying. “Now her son, Rahul Gandhi, is being called upon to do his dynastic duty and lead the Congress party. Unfortunately, many other Indian political parties have also adopted similar autocratic and dynastic structures,” he said. As a member of the Planning Commission, Maira, perhaps, has a decent insight into decision-making, involved as he was rather closely in drafting India’s 12th Five Year Plan since 201213. Baru also staked similar claims in his book. Maira, who spent some 25 years in key positions in India and overseas with the Tata Group, said India’s principal political party has become “less democratic and more centralized since then”.

way from the hustle and bustle of the busy streets of the Pink City, this majestic property welcomes you with a warmth and hospitality that perhaps the Mughals and Rajputs would have experienced in days of yore. A convenient drive of a little over 250 km from the capital, Fairmont Jaipur, the first luxury property of the Fairmont Hotels and Resorts in India, has the silhouette of a royal fort. And royalty is what you experience from the word go. The sound of the traditional trumpet followed by the sound of a gong is what greets you when you enter the calm, tranquil and spacious environment that the place offers. It feels like a palace, and is truly made to be so. “It offers you a royal experience...you feel like kings in the hotel and it is great to feel what it would have been in those times, yet with the functionalities one needs in a modern hotel. together make Fairmont Jaipur a delight for a traveler with an inclination for “premier luxury destination”. Also, since their convention space of the hotel is huge — with flexible meeting rooms, boardrooms and a magnificent Grand Ballroom — the luxury property has the capacity and capability to attract major events, conferences and fancy destination weddings. The food turned out to be more salivating than I thought. There’s an Indian specialty restaurant, Zarin, which highlights classical dishes prepared using traditional techniques

and spices with a modern flair; a tea lounge Anjum, which gives you a chance to savor teas infused with herbs such as basil, lemongrass and mint; and Aza, a library bar stocked with fine wines and malt whiskies. Cigar connoisseurs can head to the classy Cigar Diwan, and for those who wish to experience luxury more luxuriosly, there’s an exclusive Fairmont Gold Floor, which has a dedicated lounge. Guests on this floor can avail of several added benefits. A major attraction that is still in the works at the property is the signature Willow Stream Spa. “It is our USP and a claim to fame for our hotel chain,” Shaikh said.

Ballets retell India’s ancient tales SHILPA RAINA, NEW DELHI

I

t’s an endearing saga that’s lasted for decades and will endure for many more: retelling stories of mythological characters like Ram and Krishna and goddesses like Kali and Durga through the performing arts to bridge the gap between myth and reality in the complex stories. “You will be surprised how many older people only know the widespread, well-known story of Ramayana and Ram. Like Ram was one of four brothers, he broke the bow, he was banished to the forest by Kaikeyi, he killed Ravan and then he came back,” Shobha Deepak Singh, director of the Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra (SBKK), whose latest annual offering Festival of Ballets has been running since May 9, told IANS in an interview. “They don’t know the subject at all. Our duty is to inform peo-

ple what lies below the subject and dance is a vibrant medium to connect with the old and young generations,” she added, saying episodes like Sita undergoing a fire ordeal don’t even find a mention in Tulsidas’ Ramayana. Hence the expertise of the 70year-old Singh lies in bridging this gap between ignorance and what is actually written in the works. Relying heavily on self-driven meticulous research before the start of a new production is the secret recipe of these celebrated productions that are an annual affair in the capital. Be it the popular story of

‘We chronicle their life and use mythology to extend the meaning of these episodes. A lot of research goes into this’

“good versus evil” in Ram ballet or many shades of the life of Krishna, these ever-popular annual festivals, along with ballet festivals and music festivals, the SBKK has year after year produced successful productions for discerning audiences. The Festival of Ballets comprises four productions: Meera that chronicles the life of a Krishna devotee; Durga that celebrates the power of women; Karna on the life of a character in the Mahabharata; and Kumar Sambhava, the story of the demon Tarak. The festival ends on May 17. “We chronicle their life and use mythology to extend the meaning of these episodes. A lot of research goes into this and we also have to keep in mind that mythologies offer a space which comes with certain boundaries that shouldn’t be crossed,” said the Padma Shri recipient, who has under her belt over 30 productions in the past four decades. “I read analyses of stories and ask

myself many questions related to the characters that push me to explore further. Like, I kept asking myself why Sita kept running after

ELECTION SPECIAL

Advani’s role to be decided later: Gadkari

Big win may not end NDA anxiety in RS NEW DELHI: The exit poll indicators might be music to the ears of the BJP, but the task of governance may turn out to be rather a bumpy ride for the new government. The reason: The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) does not have adequate numbers in the Rajya Sabha to enable it to get important legislation passed. Of the existing House strength of 240 members (with five vacancies), the strength of the BJP-led NDA accumulates to 64 — well short of the half-way mark of 121. If the numbers predicted by the exit polls hold, the NDA will find it extremely difficult to reverse the numbers game to its advantage in the short run. Besides the existing five vacancies, 12 new vacancies will be created in the council of states this year. Seven of these vacancies will arise in Uttar Pradesh, two in Karnataka and one each in Uttarakhand, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh. While it will be a tall order for the BJP or NDA partners to win these seats, even the hypothetical possibility of winning all these seats will not take the coalition to the majority mark. Essentially, the NDA coalition will need to heavily lean on the support of regional parties, including Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress or Jayalalitha’s AIADMK.

While Narendra Modi is tipped to hold NDA chairmanship, LK Advani may go for Lok Sabha Speaker’s post IANS, NEW DELHI

W

ith the BJP confident of forming a government, party leader Nitin Gadkari said on May 14 that a role for veteran L.K. Advani will be decided “at an appropriate time”. Gadkari, party president Rajnath Singh and senior colleague Arun Jaitley were set to meet BJP’s prime ministerial aspirant Narendra Modi in Gandhinagar on May 14. Asked what role Advani will play in a new government, Gadkari said: “Atalji (Atal Bihari Vajpayee) and Advaniji are our founder members, our

most senior leaders. The party’s parliamentary board will take an appropriate decision at an appropriate time (about Advani). “The guidance of Advaniji is very important,” he added. Asked if talks were being held with BJP’s allies over government formation, Gadkari said: “There are no talks ... yet. We have not discussed anything and have not even thought about it.” He said the party was “confident of (securing) a majority” in the Lok Sabha and those who want to support it were “welcome”. Gadkari has also met another party colleague, Sushma Swaraj.

O

disha Chief Minister and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik on May 14 remained non-committal on supporting NDA in government formation at the Centre. “No talks at all. We have not discussed anything. We have not thought of it yet. Let us wait till the results,” he said. Patnaik’s comment came after speculation about talks between BJP and BJD for their possible support to the NDA if it forms the government at the Centre. BJD was an partner of NDA but parted ways just before the

2004 Lok Sabha polls. A senior BJD leader had indicated conditional support to NDA in government formation at the Centre. “Keeping in view the opinion of the whole country and the state’s interest, there should be no problem in providing conditional support to NDA to form government at the Centre,” BJD’s chief whip Pravat Tripathi had said. Senior BJD leader Jay Panda, however, said the matter needs to be discussed within the party. “On this issue, Pravat Tripathi has suggested that conditional support can be given but this is an issue which needs discussion and party leaders will take the final call,” Panda said.

argeting Rahul Gandhi, BJP has asked the Congress whether it has the capacity to accept defeat of his leadership in the election battle against Narendra Modi. “Does the Congress party honestly have the capacity to accept that as the undeclared prime ministerial candidate of the party, Rahul Gandhi did not measure up in a comparison with Narendra Modi?” BJP leader Arun Jaitley wrote in his last daily blog, which he started during the election campaign. Accusing Congress of being controlled by a family, the Rajya Sabha MP said that Gandhi-led party is unlikely to rectify its mistake. “Being a party controlled by a family it is inherent in the belief of the Congress that the family can do no wrong. The Gandhis never make a mistake. Either they are being misguided or the responsibility of failure belongs to somebody else.” Jaitley said the Congress will be in no mood to come on a correc-

tion course and will be compelled to justify the same error which has “cost it” 2014. Referring to the exit polls, he said they present a gloomy picture for the Congress. “Such adversities are not unusual. They are a part of the political cycle.” He further said modesty in victory, graciousness in defeat can demonstrate mature political thinking. “Salman Khurshid’s reaction to my comment on the Prime Minister, Dr Mammohan Singh, was indeed disappointing. What was intended to be a gracious comment on the eve of the Prime Minister’s farewell was retorted to by Salman in anger, if not discourteous.” Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi

ith exit polls suggesting that Bharatiya Janata Party leader Narendra Modi is likely to become India’s next prime minister, a leading U.S. expert has suggested that the U.S. reach out to him. “Whatever else may be believed about Modi, there is universal agreement that he is a decisive leader,” writes Ashley J. Tellis, Senior Associate South Asia Program at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a leading Washington think tank “In many ways, Modi, with his natural assertiveness, may be even better positioned than (former prime minister Atal Bihari) Vajpayee to rebuild the bilateral relationship,” he wrote in an article titled “Productive but Joyless? Narendra Modi and US-India Relations”. Tellis also suggested that denial of a U.S. visa to Modi for his alleged role in the 2002 Gujarat riots may cloud India-US relations. “Obviously, engagement will not come easily because of the uncomfortable fact that Washington and Modi managed to start out on the wrong foot,” he wrote. “The complications attending Modi’s personal history are likely to affect the future trajectory of USIndian relations in unhelpful ways.” But “even though Modi’s personal feelings toward Washington are not particularly warm today, he is not likely to go out of his way to

spite the United States out of personal pique,” he wrote. “If both sides can avoid stepping on each other’s toes, especially in South Asia — an arena in which Modi will be fiercely protective of India’s prerogatives — the United States could find itself in a potentially productive bilateral relationship with India,” Tellis wrote. “Precisely because such eventualities represent the most serious threat to U.S. interests in South Asia today, the Obama administra-

to India by a U.S. cabinet member or higher-ranking official would go a long way,” he suggested. “These overtures will not make up for the lost opportunity to engage Modi while he climbed the national stage or efface his accumulated grievances against Washington overnight,” Tellis wrote. “But they would be the necessary first step toward developing a relationship with a leader who will govern India for the next five years,” he suggested.

BEIJING: Narendra Modi, widely tipped to be India's next prime minister, may show flexibility in economic ties with China but also “create new problems”, a Chinese daily said on May 14. “Modi ... is expected to present a tougher stance on political disputes but take a ‘more flexible’ economic policy towards China,” the Global Times quoted analysts as saying. The article, by Global Times writer Yang Jingjie, was on “India’s restrictive policies barrier to trade with China”. The article said Modi, chief minister of Gujarat, “is famed for his pro-business approach and has made four trips to China to woo Chinese investment”. “In a 2011 issue of The Economist, Gujarat was described as ‘India’s Guangdong’, as the state accounted for 5 percent of India’s population, 16 percent of its industrial output and 22 percent of exports.” The article cited Fu Xiaoqiang, a research fellow with the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, as saying that “judging from Modi's governance in Gujarat, he places emphasis on infrastructure development, attracting investment and the establishment of special economic zones”.

Manmohan given standing ovation

‘I am very thankful to you all for your service to the nation. May god bless you’, were Prime Minister’s parting words to his staff NEW DELHI, IANS

P

rime Minister Manmohan Singh was given a standing ovation by his staff at South Block during a farewell they hosted for him on May 13, a day after the general elections ended. It also saw some moist eyes. Around 110 staff of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) gathered at South Block to give a farewell to Manmohan Singh, who steps down on May 17 after a decade at the helm of the country. “The staff gave the prime minister a standing ovation,” a PMO official told IANS, adding that the staff presented him with a bouquet. Manmohan Singh told the PMO staff: “I am very thankful to you all for your service to the nation. May god bless you.” Some of the staff who have interacted with the prime minister during the 10 years of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) rule were seen wiping away their tears, the official added. Present along with Manmohan Singh were National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon, Principal Secretary Pulok Chatterjee, Prime Minister’s Advisor T.K.A. Nair and his Media Advisor Pankaj Pachauri. The farewell was hosted in the

very differently,” Jaitley wrote in his blog. The blog appeared a day after the 10-phased general elections across 28 states and seven union territories ended. Exit polls indicate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to surge ahead when votes get counted on May 16 and oust the Congress-led UPA that has been in power for the past decade. Jaitley added that Singh’s inability to speak up within his own party, may compel historians to take a different view of him. “With an element of scholarship, he was always well read and well prepared on any subject. And yet, when he addressed the country, he never came out as a leader. The reason for not coming out as a leader was clear. He never wanted to rock the boat,” he said. Attacking Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Jaitley said that Singh was vested with limited powers and had to keep the party and its first family in good humor on all major decisions.

hen two strong opponents meet on the chessboard, they do not usually nurse any intentions of surprising each other through innovative moves.

Around nine months back, when he formally took charge of Bharatiya Janata Party’s election campaign, the ruling Congress-led UPA had accumulated so much baggage that was sufficient to provide a seasoned politician like Narendra Modi enough arsenal to attack the ruling dispensation. However, the real battle began with the announcement of election dates. It was here that the Congress party and the Congress leadership looked lacking far behind. It was in this arena that Modi began to capitalize big time on every mistake the Congress made. The first major one was, of course, the chaiwal-

alists. The second one was the gubbara (balloon) remark by Rahul Gandhi. The Congress scion incessantly dubbed BJP’s campaign as a “balloon that would burst very soon” in rally after rally for about a fortnight, before shifting to the “toffee” repartee where he accused Modi of giving away farmers’ land to an industrialist for `1 – the cost of a toffee. It did not take Modi much time to retort back. “On the other side, there is a player whose mind doesn’t move away from childishness.

people, but also exposed Congress leadership (read Rahul Gandhi) as being devoid of creative ideas and progressive thinking. But there is also another aspect to Narendra Modi’s campaign. Making do with just three hours of sleep, Modi travelled over 300,000 kms, held around 6000 public meetings, addressed 437 public meetings in 25 states besides 1350 3-D rallies since September 15, when he held his public rally after being declared as the party’s prime ministerial candidate. The campaign was a mix of traditional methods and innovative use of technology. The total number of his public meetings stood at 5827 and two mega road shows in Varanasi and Vadodra, the two LS seats he is contesting from. BJP claims Modi has reached out directly to anywhere between 50-100 million people. It describes the campaign as “historic” and “unprecedented” in its intensity and scale. Modi’s campaign is one of the biggest mass mobilization anywhere in the history of electioneering, the party claims.

arendra Modi created history on May 16 on his way to becoming India's 14th prime minister as he led the BJP to a spectacular victory in a Lok Sabha battle that crushed the Congress and others ranged against him and gave, for the first time in 30 years, any party a majority in parliament on its own. Even political pundits gasped at the sheer scale of the Bharatiya Janata Party's sweep that election officials said was poised to give it a comfortable majority in the 545member Lok Sabha even without the aid of its old and new allies. The Congress, India's oldest party which had ruled the country for a decade since 2004, faced its worst humiliation. It had won three seats and was leading only in 39 more -- its worst tally in the Lok Sabha where it had never fallen to two digits. The Congress won 206 seats in 2009. The Congress did not win a single seat in seven states and it was unlikely to win more than 10 seats in any state. A chastened Congress

A determined man who had slogged for years amid great odds, Narendra Damodardas Modi, 63, is now all set to rule India as its 14th prime minister. It is a dream story that may well have been scripted in Bollywood. Today, Modi, who was an administrative novice when he took charge of Gujarat over 13 years ago, towers over men much older to him in politics, the result of a meteoric rise with few parallels. amil Nadu’s ruling AIADMK on May 16 rode a Jayalalithaa wave that swept away all opponents to the effect that there will be no Congress or DMK representative from the state in the Lok Sabha for next five years. The AIADMK has won four seats and were leading in 33 of the 39 Lok Sabha seats in the state and the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) were leading in two, as per the trends available till afternoon. If the trend continues, the AIADMK may turn out to be the third largest party in the 16th Lok Sabha after the BJP and the Congress. Party cadres have already started their victory celebrations at AIADMK’s headquarters. Jayalalithaa told reporters: “It is a historic, unparalleled, unprecedented victory without any alliance. I would like to thank all those who worked for the victory.” She also conveyed her best wishes to the country’s new prime minister Narendra Modi and said her party would act as a responsible political party. “We are the third largest party and we

will act as a responsible political party.” AIADMK leader C.Ponnaiyan told IANS: “The results are as per our expectations. In fact, we were sure of winning all the 39 seats. Further, this is also the first time the party fought the Lok Sabha elections on its own.” According to him, the AIADMK government has implemented several welfare schemes that reached the poor which in turn has resulted the party being victorious. According to Election Commission, by afternoon the AIADMK had logged a vote share of 44.4 percent as compared to the DMK’s around 23.1 percent. Ponnaiyan said the infighting in the DMK will result in the disintegration of the party while DMDK led by actorturned-politician A.Vijaykant will be of no consequence. BHUBANESWAR: Odisha’s ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on May 16 appeared set for a landslide win in both the assembly and Lok Sabha polls. The party candidates are leading in 18 of the 21 Lok Sabha and 100 of the 147 assembly constituencies in the state, officials said. Naveen Patnaik, who is set for fourth straight term as the chief minister, is leading in the Hinjili assembly constituencies in Ganjam district over Congress’ Sibaram Patra by a margin of 15,000 votes, they said. Among prominent BJD candidates for the Lok Sabha who are leading are members of the outgoing parliament Sidhant Mohapatra, Prasanna Kumar Patsani, Bhartruhari Mahatab, Baijayant Panda and Pinaki Mishra. The party seems to have bettered its own expectations,” Ramu Manivannan, professor of political science in the University of Madras, told IANS. “People seem to agree with her views on various issues advocated strongly by her like the Cauvery river water sharing, Mullaperiyar dam dispute with Kerala, attacks on Indian fishermen by Sri Lanka and others,” he said. Meanwhile, DMK president M. Karunanidhi said he accepted his party’s defeat “with bowed head”. In a statement, Karunanidhi said he has conveyed his party’s wishes to BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi for its “massive nationwide electoral victory”. But he said the party had seen “defeats and also mega victories earlier”. However, Karunanidhi did not congratulate the AIADMK, though political niceties demand so. “But it is part of the political culture of the Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu. The Congress, however, was putting up a stubborn fight to hold on to its area of influence. Of the total 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state, the Trinamool candidates won 11 seats and were ahead in 33 others. They were to end up with their best performance in the state, bettering the 19 seat tally the Mamata Banerjee-led party grabbed in 2009. In the previous Lok Sabha polls in 2009, the then Trinamool Congress-Congress- Socialist Unity Centre of India-Communist (SUCI-C) alliance had won 26 seats. The BJP’s best performance so far was in 1999, when it bagged two seats - but in alliance with the Trinamool. This time, BJP had fought all the 42 seats in the state on its own. So long, the BJP’s vote percentage of 12 was the highest in the

“A

b ki baar Modi sarkaar” seems to have sailed through the imagination of the Indian electorate across this vast country as the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA trounced the Congress to its all-time lowest tally, said analysts and common people alike. “Modi raised huge expectations regarding employment and governance, which evoked an overwhelming response from the young and first-time voters. This was coupled with his appeal to Hindu majority sentiment in states like Assam and West Bengal, not to mention Uttar Pradesh,” said political analyst professor Pradeep Dutta when asked why the Gujarat chief minister clicked in the 2014 general election. Experts were of the opinion that Modi combined the BJP’s traditional twin-leadership of an ideological hardliner and a decisive leader all unto himself, leading to a massive mandate for the saffron front. “He seems to have cut across all sections of society. That cannot be just polarisation along communal lines. His promises may have gone down well with the electorate, though it was another matter that he

BJP creates history NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was set to create an electoral record by becoming the first party in 30 years to win a majority on its own in the Lok Sabha. The party is set to win around 280 seats, comfortably above the half-way mark of 272 in the 545-member Lok Sabha, whose 543 members are elected and two are nominated. This is in sharp contrast to the mere two seats the won in the 1984 general elections, its first after coming out of the shadow of the Janata Party, into which the erstwhile Jana Sangh had merged to jointly fight the 1977 general elections after the emergency was lifted. The Congress, in fact, had swept the 1984 polls, riding a sympathy wave after the assassination of then prime minister.

utgoing External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid says the UPA government has done “outstanding work” in the field of foreign policy and is leaving India’s relations “in fairly good condition” that the future government can look forward to. Speaking to IANS in perhaps his last interview before the UPA government demits office, Khurshid said the United Progressive Alliance government’s contribution in building relations in its 10 years in power has been that despite working in a “difficult world and neighbourhood” India has been able to ensure that bilateral relations are stable. He praised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for steering India’s foreign policy. “In the past 10 years, among other good work that we have done, foreign policy is an area in which in a very difficult world and neighbourhood, we have done outstanding work and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, I think, deserves credit for much of this -- as he steered it very closely,” Khurshid

Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid

told IANS. He said that in the 15 months he has been external affairs minister, he had an opportunity to work with the prime minister, who took keen interest in foreign policy and in raising India’s standing in the world order. On India’s relations with neighbours, Khurshid said there were “difficult conditions operating in countries in the neighbourhood”, in

Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. “The conditions were difficult, both in all those countries and spilling over and reflecting in politics in our country -- and, therefore, to manage good relations with those countries without creating unnecessary tension in our country was not an easy job. But we managed to do it vis-a-vis Nepal, the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

prime minister was reportedly remote-controlled. It’s for the first time that we saw a true leader who is not only strong but has a vision for the nation,” said Rohan Agnihotry, a 27-year-old business analyst based in Bangalore.

Industry seeks strong support from Modi govt New Delhi: Industry chambers said they expected the new government that will assume charge next week to take strong steps for fast and sustainable growth. Modi is known as a pro-business and an industry-friendly leader. "With prudent macroeconomic management, CII expects that the economy could recover to 6.5 percent GDP growth rate in 2014-15 as against an estimated 4.9 percent in 2013-14. Continued reforms could take GDP growth rate to 8 percent level in three years," Ajay Shriram, president, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) said. "A clear mandate is positive for India. It is amply clear that the country, especially the youth, wants development and good governance," Sidharth Birla, president, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (Ficci) said. "Ficci hopes that this mandate will help the leadership restore much needed investor confidence and attract higher investments.”

DRUG$MART-WEBSTERCARE TIE-UP FOR BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE

P

BY A STAFF WRITER

iscataway (NJ) – Drug$mart has formed an alliance with leading Australian-based medication management innovator Webstercare to deliver an innovative medication management service to its community and long-term care patients. The service, which will include pharmacist consultation and medication management packaging called a Webster-pak®, is designed to remove the complexity from any medication regimen, help educate the patient, eliminate errors and ensure greater medication adherence. Medication adherence is now a $300 billion problem in the United States. Only about one-third of patients adhere to their medication in accordance to the doctor’s instructions and more than 125,000 people die each year due to issues stemming from a lack of medication adherence. In fact, 23% of hospital admissions and 10% of nursing home admissions are due to lack of adherence. This doesn’t just impact the patient but family and friends as well. “Patient and caregiver lives can become centered on complex medication regimens. People even lose their independence and wind up in assisted living or nursing homes due to the inability to adhere to medication regimens. I want to help change that for my patients,”

Guest of honor Piyush Patel lightng a lamp at the gala dinner where the Drug$mart-Webstercare alliance for better healthcare was launched

said Ritesh Shah, pharmacist and owner of Drug$mart pharmacies. “Life should not be about medication. Medication should be about enabling life”, he said. Melissa Mirabile, Webstercare support services manager, and Daniel Mirabile,

Webstercare IT support manager, flew in from Australia to implement the new system at the Drug$mart pharmacies. Leveraging Webstercare technology and innovative Webster-paks, Drug$mart pharmacists will prepackage medication regimens for its patients. Easy-to-read

deliver secure business solutions that meet organizational priorities and support the agency’s mission of ensuring the safety and soundness of national banks and federal savings associations,” OCC announced. “Jawahar’s experience has prepared him exceptionally well to serve in this role,” said OCC Chief Information Officer Edward Dorris. “He is ideally

suited to be part of the agency’s senior information technology team to continue our efforts toward achieving best in class productivity, efficiency and quality for the OCC employees and supervised institutions that depend on us.” Kaliani joins the OCC from Amdocs, Inc., where he served as vice-president of customer operations management and led the development, execution and delivery of large-scale services and business IT solutions supporting major telecommunications clients who managed more than $30 billion in annual billings. Manan Trivedi is DFA choice for Congress

P

Manan Trivedi

BY A STAFF WRITER

ENNSLYVANIA-The Democracy For America (DFA) has announced the endorsement of Democrat Ma n a n Tr i ve d i t o re p l a c e retiring Republican Congressman Jim Gerlach of Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional district. With more than 50,942 members in Pennsylvania and one million members nationwide, the DFA is a progressive political organization founded by Howard Dean, who served as governor of Vermont from 1991-2003 and chaired the Democratic National Committee from 2005-2009. An Indian American physician and veteran of the Iraq war, Trivedi won the Democratic primaries for Congress in Pennsylvania in 2010 and 2012, but lost both times in the general election to

Gerlach. This year he faces Republican Ryan Costello, who, like Trivedi, is unopposed in the primary. The DFA endorsed Trivedi in both his prior runs for Congress. “Democracy for America members will be the boots on the ground providing the people-power Manan Trivedi will need to beat far-right Paul Ryan-clone Ryan Costello in November,” Jim Dean, chair of DFA, said in a statement. “The diverse communities of Pennsylvania’s 6th District need a progressive leader like Manan Trivedi and DFA members are honored to stand with him in his fight to restore the middle class, protect our nation’s veterans, and raise the minimum wage,” Dean added.

instructions, the patient’s picture on the packaging and made available in English and Gujarati languages, are just some of the key features being offered. “I want to offer this in Gujarati to help many in our community to have a higher level of comfort and trust in taking their medications,” said Ritesh. “There will be no charge for this service. I want everyone to experience a higher quality of life, greater independence and the peace of mind this service will provide.” “We are pleased and privileged to teamup with Ritesh and Drug$mart to provide these important services to the community.” said Gerard Stevens, an award-winning Australian pharmacist and managing director of Webstercare. “At Webstercare, our mission is to help people achieve a better quality of life through proper medication management. We share Ritesh’s passion for making a difference in people’s lives and look forward to being part of an effort that will improve the health care of Drug$mart patients.” The service was launched at a gala dinner attended by dignitaries, doctors, long-term care facility owners, caregivers and patients with the guest of honor being Piyush Patel. They heard from speakers who described the system and demonstrated how it will make a real difference to the lives of patients.

2 NJ hotels pay price for fleecing customers after Hurricane Sandy BY A STAFF WRITER

T

RENTON (NJ) — Two hotels and a gas station have agreed to pay $89,946 to settle allegations that they illegally jacked up prices after Hurricane Sandy to take advantage of people desperate for fuel and shelter, state authorities said. C&M Exxon in East Hanover agreed to pay $26,000 to settle claims that it charged as much as $4.79 for credit card sales of regular gasoline, more than 26 per cent above its price prior to the state of emergency. The station charges as much as $5.09 for credit card sales of premium fuel. The Berkeley Hotel in Asbury Park will pay $45,000, including nearly $6,000 to customers, to settle claims brought by the state Attorney General’s Office that it raised room rates by as much as 117 percent above normal prices. Similarly, the Studio Inn & Suites in Galloway will pay $25,000, including about $1,400 in restitution to customers, settling claims that it raised room rates by as much as 283 percent during the state of emergency. To date, the Attorney General’s Office has resolved 21 of the 27 lawsuits filed against businesses accused of price gouging during the state of emergency declared in response to the storm, collecting more than $900,000 in civil penalties and other cost

205 die in Turkey explosion

‘Implement OSCE roadmap for Ukraine’

787 workers were inside the mine; over 400 still trapped

MOSCOW: Russia has said it was extremely important to implement a roadmap for settling the Ukraine crisis as proposed by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), media reported on May 14. “The implementation of the ‘roadmap’ would create conditions for the start of a broad national dialogue aimed at reconciliation and an allencompassing constitutional reform designed to prevent Ukraine from sliding towards catastrophe,” the Russian foreign ministry said on May 13. Besides Russia, the roadmap has been backed by the US, the European Union (EU), and the Kiev government, Xinhua reported.

A

t least 205 people were killed and some 400 workers remain trapped underground after an explosion and fire in a coal mine in Turkey on May 13, officials said. A total of 787 people were inside the mine in Soma, 250 km south of Istanbul, when the disaster occurred. As many as 363 people have been accounted for so far, including the miners killed, Xinhua reported. At least 80 rescued miners were injured, including four who were in

27

a serious condition, Turkey’s Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said at the scene as he oversaw rescue operation involving some 400 rescuers. The accident occurred as the workers were preparing for a shift change, officials said. The explosion occurred at a power distribution unit two km below the surface, which caused the mine’s elevator to stop working. A fire broke out after the explosion. The Soma Coal Mining Company, the mine’s operator, said they had inspected the mine’s facilities only two months ago and found nothing against regulations.

The OSCE plan calls on all sides to refrain from violence and urges amnesty for those involved in the crisis.

US troops join search for Nigerian girls WASHINGTON: A total of 16 military personnel from U.S. Africa Command have joined the effort to help find hundreds of Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram Islamists, a Pentagon spokesperson said on May 12. The personnel, including experts in communications, logistics, civil affairs, operations and intelligence, are among members of an interdisciplinary team led by the State Department at the U.S. embassy in Abuja, Xinhua reported. “Their role is to assess the situation,

advise and assist the Nigerian government in their efforts to respond to this crisis situation, and find the young women kidnapped by Boko Haram,” Xinhua quoted spokesperson Steve Warren as saying at a press conference. Members of the militant group Boko Haram abducted more than 200 girls from the Government Secondary boarding school in the town of Chibok, several hundred km east of Abuja, on the night of April 14.

Contact ex-PM: Thai Senate BANGKOK: The Thai Senate has said that ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra should be contacted to discuss the ongoing unrest as he is the center of the political crisis in the country, media reported on May 14. The Senate held an informal session on May 13 to discuss possible solutions to end the conflict, the Bangkok Post reported. Senator Wanchai Sornsiri urged acting Senate Speaker Surachai Liangboonlertchai to contact Thaksin Shinawatra. Thaksin Shinawatra was the prime minister of Thailand 200106 when he was ousted on allegations of corruption, treason, authoritarianism, tax evasion and concealing his wealth during his premiership.

SOuTH ASiA Musharraf’s probe report presented ISLAMABAD: The investigation report of the national probe agency Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) was on May 14 presented in the special court trying former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf for high treason, media reported. The 237-page report, prepared by the FIA on steps taken by the

ation,” he said, emphasizing the need to secure the border regions. Sharif said terrorism has severely hit Pakistan’s economy, reiterating Rouhani’s calls to control the border regions, Press TV reported. The border regions are a particular concern for both countries as reports of attacks continue to surface. Last week, Iran arrested a number of “armed terrorists” in its Sistan and Baluchestan province near Pakistan border.

YANGON: The Myanmar Government and the ethnic rebel group Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) on May 12 held their first peace talks after the government offensive against the group launched in April, media reported. Vice Chairman of the government’s Central Peace Making Work Committee U Aung Min and KIO negotiator U Sum Hlut Gam are expected to seek a solution to the conflict in the meeting, Xinhua reported. Representative of ethnic armed groups’ National Ceasefire Coordination Team Pado Saw Kwe Htoo Win

said the two-day meeting in Myitgyina, Kachin state’s capital, would contribute to the national ceasefire talks. On April 4 and again on 13, the government forces launched a mop-up operation in three main areas in Kachin state against the KIO, in which eight government soldiers were killed, while the KIA lost 14 fighters. The clashes came after the government’s Central Peace Making Work Committee and ethnic armed groups’ National Ceasefire Coordination Team met in Yangon April 8 for jointly drafting a nationwide ceasefire agreement.

‘Don’t deport Indian journalists’

Pakistan, Iran join hands against terrorism TEHRAN: Iran and Pakistan are teaming up in their fight against terrorism, a media report said here on May 11. Terrorism is a “big and serious” problem in the region, Xinhua quoted Iranian President Hassan Rouhani as saying during a meet with visiting Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who arrived here on May 11 on an official visit. “Iran and Pakistan can uproot terrorism and violence in the region by inviting other regional states to enhance intelligence, security and operational cooper-

former military ruler, will be handed over to his legal team as per his request, Dawn online reported. The report was presented to the three-judge bench headed by Justice Faisal Arab which had May 8 ordered FIA to provide its enquiry report to the accused. In its order, the court had directed the prosecutor to file by May 14, 2014 copies of all statements of all persons that were recorded during the course of investigation.

MUMBAI: The Indian chapter of Pakistan-India Peoples’ Forum for Peace and Democracy (PIPFPD) has urged Pakistan not to send back two Indian journalists and renew their expired visas. The visas of the two Indian journalists — based in Pakistan since August 2013 — expired in March, PIPFPD office-bearers Asha Hans and Jatin Desai said in a joint appeal here on May 13. “Since then both - Meena Menon of The Hindu and S. Philip of the PTI —

have been trying hard to get them renewed. There has been no provocation on their part,” they said. “The surprising part is that they were only telephonically informed and given a week’s time since last Thursday to leave the country. So far, there has been no official written communication,” Desai told IANS. Hans and Desai pointed out that asking the Indian journalists to leave Pakistan would send a wrong message.

Civic polls: Congress wiped out in Seemandhra The bifurcation of Andhra proved costly for Congress as it could not win a single municipal corporation in Seemandhra IANS, HYDERABAD

n what is seen as a precursor to results of the assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Andhra Pradesh, the Congress was virtually wiped out in the municipal polls in Seemandhra but won a majority of the seats in Telangana. The bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh appeared to have proved costly for the Congress as it could not win a single municipal corporation or municipality in elections in the 13 districts of Seemandhra. However, separate statehood to Telangana seems to have benefited the party as it bagged 21 municipalities and emerged as single largest party in two of the three corporations in the polls whose results were declared on May 12. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) swept the urban body polls in Seemandhra, winning power in five corporations and 62 municipalities. The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) bagged two corporations and 19 municipalities. It will be hung civic bodies in 11 towns. mandhra. Others, majority of them Independents, have won 120 seats.

Overall in Telangana, the Congress won 526 seats and the TRS 313. The TDP got only 162 seats The Congress finished a poor third with 53 seats. The Congress drew a blank in two districts and could reach double digit in only three districts.

Clashes claim two lives in Hyderabad HYDERABAD: Two people were killed and nine injured on May 14 when police opened fire to disperse two clashing groups in Hyderabad, police said. Curfew was imposed to bring the situation under control in Sikh Chowni in Kishan Bagh under Rajendernagar police station. Trouble broke out after miscreants attacked houses and shops of a particular community following rumors that a religious flag was burnt. Police opened fire to disperse the clashing groups killing two people and injuring nine, a police spokesman of Cyberabad told

IANS. Cyberabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand said the situation was brought under control. As tension spread to the adjoining areas of the old city of Hyderabad, police imposed prohibitory orders. Additional police and paramilitary forces were rushed to the troubled area. Personnel of Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deployed in the communally sensitive old city. One person was killed and several were injured in the violence in the same area over a similar incident few years ago.

ll arrangements have been made for smooth counting of votes that begins Friday 8 a.m. in 160 halls across the state, an election official said. Kerala Chief Electoral Officer Nalini Netto said there are 21,427 electronic voting machines (EVMs) whose recorded votes have to be counted, besides the postal votes. “This is the longest time that the EVMs have been kept under security. As many as 56 observers will oversee the counting process,”

said Netto. Kerala has 20 Lok Sabha constituencies and the exit polls have predicted that the Congress-led United Democratic Front will do well. The public can access the results on www.trend.kerala.gov.in.

Barring Chittoor, Kadapa and Kurnool, it was the TDP which dominated Seemandhra. In Telangana, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) bagged one corporation and eight municipalities. The TDP won three and BJP two municipalities, and the Majlise-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) bagged one each. It was a hung house in 18 towns. Overall in Telangana, the Congress won 526 seats and the TRS 313. Others, bagged 355 seats while the TDP bagged only 162 seats.

BJP 14, Congress 10 in K’taka: Bangalore institute’s exit poll BANGALORE: An exit poll survey conducted by a city-based political research institute has shown BJP winning 14 of the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies across Karnataka, Congress 10 and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) four. “We conducted the survey in 50 polling booths in each of the assembly segment covering 400 booths in every parliamentary constituency across the state for our exit poll,” Creative Centre for Social and Political Studies (COPS) co-coordinator G. Madhusudhan told IANS here. The survey has also revealed that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which contested in all 28 seats, failed to make impact on the electorate in the state, as it drew blank. “Our exit poll has shown AAP not getting even 10 percent of the total votes polled across state, as its awareness among the people was little beyond cities,” Madhusudhan said. Around 67 percent of the 46-million electorate voted April 17 across the state where general elections were held in a single phase for the first time in many years. In the 2009 general elections, BJP had won 19, Congress six and JD-S three. In the high-profile Bangalore South, the survey showed BJP’s fivetime winner H.N. Ananth Kumar would retain the seat, overcoming the challenge posed by Infosys cofounder and technocrat Nandan

Nilekani of Congress. In Bangalore Central, however, Congress candidate Rizwan Arshad has been projected to wrest the seat from BJP’s outgoing lawmaker P.C. Mohan. “In this constituency, our survey showed AAP candidate and former Infosys director V. Balakrishnan at fourth position behind Nandini Alva of JD-S,” Madhusudhan claimed. In Bangalore North, BJP is expected to retain the seat where its former chief minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda contested. According to the exit poll, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will win in Chikkodi, Bijapur, Koppal, Bellary (reserved-ST), Haveri, Dharwad, Uttara Kannada, Davangere, Shimoga, Udupi-Chikmagalur, Tumkur and Mysore, besides two in Bangalore. Congress is projected to win in Belgaum, Bagalkot, Gulbarga (reservedSC), Raichur (reserved-ST), Bidar, Dakshina Kannada, Chitradurga (reserved-SC), Chamarajanagar (reserved-SC) and Bangalore Rurual in addition to Bangalore Central.

State Water Resources Minister P.J. Joseph came down heavily on Justice (retd) K.T. For that, Kerala’s counsel should have argued. “Expert opinions have shown that this dam was reinforced three times and that’s a very successful technique and is being used to protect old buildings. The dam’s safety was also vouched by experts,” said Thomas. The apex court shot down Kerala’s demand for a new dam and ruled that the dam was safe, con-

Shilpa was named Yummy Mummy by BioOil based on a survey, and she was given the Spalicious Mom title at the recently held GeoSpa asiaSpa India awards 2013. The 38-year-old actress says these are huge compliments as they appreciate her all-round achievements after giving birth to her son Viaan. “They (people) didn’t just vote for me because I have got back to my slim shape. They felt that as an all-rounder I have been able to balance motherhood and my work and get back to shape. So, there is no bigger compliment,” Shilpa said here at an event last week. Despite being an active entrepreneur now, Shilpa stays on her toes around her son. She says everything about motherhood is tough but educative. “Whatever we do, we do it out of heart. Other mothers don’t need my advice. I stay on my toes and that’s just normal. I used to think that pregnancy is hard and after delivery things will be easy,” says the Bollywood actress.

‘Arjun Rampal my inspiration’ NEW DELHI: Prateik Jain, who won the first edition of Provogue MensXP Mr. India 2014, is inspired by model-turned-actor Arjun Rampal and says he looks up to him as an example to be successful. “Arjun Rampal has got an amazing charisma and he is very charming.
