Trump blames ‘both sides’ for violence
Charlottesville incident effect: the US President ended manufacturing council after six business leaders quit IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Donald Trump has “blamed both sides” for the deadly violence at a white supremacist rally over the weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia, that resulted in the death of a 32-year-old woman. In a show of defiance, Trump told reporters in Manhattan this week that there were “two sides to a story” just a day after he had belatedly condemned racist hate groups for the mayhem at the “Unite the Right” rally in Virginia, the Washington Post reported. “I think there is blame on both sides. You had a group on one side that was bad. You had a group on the other side that was also very violent. Nobody wants to say that. I’ll say it right now.” He equated the white supremacists on one side with the “alt-left” on the other side and said that “alt-left” groups were “very, very violent” when they sought to confront the white nationalist and neo-Nazi groups that had gathered in Charlottesville. Trump also defended his initial response that “many sides” were to blame for the violence at the rally,
Manufacturing council shut WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said that he was disbaning both the Manufacturing Council and the Strategy and Policy Forum, as business leaders resigned from the council over his remarks on Charlottesville violence this week. “Rather than putting pressure on the business people of the Manufacturing Council & Strategy & Policy Forum, I am ending both. Thank you all!” Trump tweeted this week. The Manufacturing council was an advisory panel set up in January aimed at boosting jobs in the manufacturing sector. —IANS
saying he needed to “know the facts” before calling out neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan. His initial response to the violence was quickly panned by Democrats and Republicans alike. He remained silent. After mounting pressure, Trump spoke and condemned the
white supremacists and neo-Nazis at the heart of the violence. On Tuesday, the President defended his 48-hour delay in denouncing white supremacists, arguing that he took his time because he didn’t know the facts. “I wanted to make sure, unlike most politicians, that what I said was correct, not make a quick statement,” Trump said, calling his initial comment a “fine statement”. He added: “I don’t want to go quickly and just make a statement for the sake of making a political statement.” The President subsequently called the driver of the car that drove through a crowd, killing one woman, a “murderer”. “The driver of the car is a murderer and what he did was a horrible, horrible, inexcusable thing.” Trump also made it clear that he believes that many of the participants in the rally were taking part in a lawful demonstration against the Charlottesville city council’s decision to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from a public square, the report said. “You had people in that group who were protesting the taking down of what to them is a very, very important statue,” he said.
Obama’s tweet on violence in Nadella, Cook, Zuckerberg slam US violence Charlottesville sets new record IANS, SAN FRANCISCO
NEW YORK: Former US President Barack Obama’s tweet in response to the deadly violence in the Charlottesville, Virginia rally garnered 2.8 million ‘likes,’ making it the mostapproved post in Twitter’s history. Obama’s tweet that he posted on August 12 set the record, surpassing the previous record-holder for most-liked Twitter post which was singer Ariana Grande’s distraught message following the Manchester terror attack in May that garnered 2.7 million ‘likes’, Variety reported. Quoting South African political leader late Nelson Mandela, Obama tweeted: “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
B
This tweet is also the fourth mostretweeted post ever, with more than 1.16 million retweets. The top spot for retweet is held by a tweet from the Nevada teen who was trying to get 18 million retweets for a free year of chicken nuggets from Wendy’s. At second spot is the Ellen DeGeneres Oscars selfie from the 2014 Academy Awards which is also the third mostliked tweet on the platform. —IANS
reaking their silence over the violence at a white supremacist rally in the US, Microsoft’s Indian-born CEO Satya Nadella, Apple’s Tim Cook and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg have condemned the incident as “horrific” and “a disgrace” to the nation. In an email to his leadership team which was obtained by Quartz, Nadella said the tragedy at Charlottesville in Virginia on August 12 - where a 32-year-old woman was killed — was “horrific”. “There is no place in our society for the bias, bigotry and senseless violence we witnessed in Virginia provoked by white nationalists. Our hearts go out to the families and everyone impacted by the Charlottesville tragedy,” Nadella said. Zuckerberg said the company is “watching the situation closely and will take down threats of physical harm”. “There is no place for hate in our

community. That’s why we’ve always taken down any post that promotes or celebrates hate crimes or acts of terrorism — including what happened in Charlottesville,” the Facebook CEO posted on his page. “With the potential for more rallies, we’re watching the situation closely and will take down threats of physical harm. We won’t always be perfect, but you have my commitment that we’ll keep working to make Facebook a place where everyone can feel safe,” he added. US President Donald Trump
Tim Cook
had blamed “both sides” for the deadly violence at the white supremacist rally. According to Cook, the events of the past several days have been “deeply troubling” for him. “I disagree with the President and others who believe that there is a moral equivalence between white supremacists and Nazis, and those who oppose them by standing up for human rights. Equating the two runs counter to our ideals as Americans,” Cook said in an email sent to employees and accessed by ReCode.

Country now wants ‘Sach Bharat’
Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi said the BJP had promised to create two crore jobs every year and give Rs 1.5 million to every household if it came to power but failed on these counts

ccusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of lying, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said he speaks about ‘Swachh Bharat’ (Clean India) but now the country wants ‘Sach Bharat’ (Truthful India). “Modiji says he wants a Swachh Bharat but we want Sach Bharat. Wherever he goes, he lies,” Gandhi said at the Save Composite Culture conclave called by Janata Dal-United leader Sharad Yadav here. Terming the ‘Make in India programme’ of the NDA government a failure, he said: “Modiji gave ‘Make In India’ slogan, but here most things are ‘Made In China’. But the truth is that Modiji’s ‘Make In India’ has failed completely.” He also noted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had promised to
Kashmir terror money trail: NIA widens net SRINAGAR/NEW DELHI: The NIA on Wednesday widened its net in the Kashmir terror money trail and conducted searches at a dozen locations in Jammu and Kashmir, including the houses of a prominent Kashmiri businessman and a lawyer — both said to be close to hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani. The fresh operation was a followup search by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the Kashmir terror funding case that has already led to the arrest of eight separatist leaders for their alleged involvement in giving money received from Pakistan to overground workers of the Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-eTaiba militant outfits to fuel unrest in the valley. An NIA spokesperson said in New Delhi that officials searched the premises belonging to the family, relatives and aides of Zahoor Watali - an influential Kashmiri businessman known to be friends with Pakistani leaders and separatists as well as mainstream politicians in Kashmir. Former Pakistan-administered Kashmir Prime Minister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhary had attended the marriage ceremony of Watali’s son at the businessman’s residence in the posh Srinagar neighborhood of Baagaat. His business empire is reportedly spread in Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh and Dubai. Sources said Watali was quizzed afresh while the raids went on for hours at his premises on Wednesday. —IANS

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Thursday hit out at the Congress and other opposition parties participating in the ‘Sajha Virasat Bachao’ (Save Composite Culture) conference, terming it an alliance of defeated and “scared people” and asked why they were silent on the killings of RSS-BJP workers in Kerala. “On behalf of BJP I ask organizers of the composite culture how they consider the merciless killings of RSS workers by CPI-M goons in Kerala. about ‘one man, one vote’ system. They know well that till the time there is ‘one man, one vote’ system in the country, till that time the country doesn’t belong to them. “RSS’s main aim is to destroy and finish the Constitution. They ultimately want to take away the ‘one man, one vote’ right,” he said. Gandhi said the RSS was aware that with its ideology it would not win elections and that was the reason why they were placing their men in every institution — judiciary, bureaucracy and media. “If we have to fight them, then we have to fight unitedly,” he said. He said Congressmen believe that they belong to the country and want to do something for it while the BJP and the RSS claim that this country belonged only to them. “The RSS says that this country is ours, but it does not belong to the minorities, Dalits and farmers,” he said.
India, China discuss border peace GAURAV SHARMA,BEIJING/ NEW DELHI
A
s a tense military standoff in Doklam entered the third month, senior Indian and Chinese army officers discussed another border row on Wednesday, a day after troops of the two countries scuffled and threw stones at each other in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh sector. According to Army sources in Delhi, a “pre-scheduled” Border Personnel Meeting was held near Chusul border area in Ladakh.
The sources said the meeting discussed the incidents and issues to ensure “strengthening of existing mechanisms for maintaining peace and tranquility” on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) that divides the cold Ladakh region between India and China. Troops of both sides had scuffled near Pangong Lake in the western sector of the India and China boundary on Tuesday after Chinese troops tried to cross the LAC in areas known as Finger Four and Finger Five. used. Later, a standard drill in which banners are shown asking the other side to go back to the agreed point was held, and the Chinese troops retreated. Defense Minister Arun Jaitley and Army officials in Delhi refused to comment on the incident but did not deny it either.

Gorakhpur, allegedly due to the lack of oxygen, has dented the aura of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. It has been a tough time since he
assumed office: Questions were being raised over law and order. There was also a major hooch tragedy that killed over 45 people in
Azamgarh. But these seemingly did not affect Adityanath personally. The death of 65 children in a medical college in his hometown has, however, severely damaged his standing. The government is under attack for its handling of the tragedy. Despite the District Magistrate of Gorakhpur admitting to disruption of oxygen, the government has stuck to its guns that this was not the case. In the face of mounting deaths, and the criticism by the opposition, the government hid behind statistics. Health Minister Siddhartha Nath Singh contended that “deaths ... happened even in the past”.

arning that military action to deal with North Korean nuclear and missile threats will be “too horrific to contemplate”, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday called upon nations to “dial-down rhetoric and dial-up diplomacy”. Speaking to reporters, he said that all countries should strictly enforce the recent Security Council resolution imposing a stringent embargo on North Korea, but simultaneously also work towards a “meaningful dialogue”. His comments on dangers of military action appeared to be aimed at United States President Donald Trump who has warned Pyongyang of a rain of “fire and fury like the world has never seen before” if it continued with its threats to the US. 17 killed in Burkina Faso attack OUAGADOUGOU (BURKINA FASO): Seventeen persons have been killed and eight wounded in a “terrorist attack” in the center of the capital of Burkina Faso here, the government said. Witnesses were quoted as saying that three gunmen on Sunday opened fire on customers seated outside a hotel and restaurant, the BBC reported. The shooting began shortly after 9 p.m. Two locations, Hotel Bravia and the Aziz Istanbul Restaurant, appear to have been at the center of the shooting, the BBC said.
‘Threats of military action in Venezuela unacceptable’ MOSCOW: Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday described the threats of a military intervention in Venezuela made by US President Donald Trump as “unacceptable”. Lavrov was at a joint press conference in Moscow following bilateral talks with his Bolivian counterpart, Fernando Huanakuni Mamani, as he criticized recent comments by Trump regarding a possible US military intervention in the South American country, Efe news reported. “We are united in the need to overcome the existing disagreements in the country by peaceful means through a nationwide dialogue,” Lavrov said.
BEIJING: Top Chinese and US military officials have agreed to boost military ties and exchanges amid growing tension between the two countries over North Korea. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Army Joseph Dunford met his Chinese counterpart Fang Fenghui on Tuesday and signed the framework for an agreement to build a new communication mechanism for
their joint staff departments, the China Daily reported on Wednesday. Experts said the new mechanism would help strengthen effective communication, reduce miscalculations and improve risk management in Asia’s increasingly complex geopolitical climate, according to the report. China’s maritime disputes in the South China Sea with neighboring countries were also discussed.

Kim Jong-un, who oversaw the test of ballistic missiles that experts say could reach major US cities, had threatened to fire missiles near Guam, a US territory in the Pacific. However, in the face of Trump’s stern warnings he has since backed
off, saying he would wait to see the “foolish and stupid conduct of the Yankees”. Guterres also conceded the role of North Korea in precipitating the crisis, saying that it started with Pyongyang building up its nuclear and missile programmes.
Even as the US and North Korea appear to have pulled back from the brink, Guterres recalled that more than 3 million people had died in the Korean conflict of the early 1950s and warned that the world needs to heed the lessons of history.
‘No war on Korean peninsula’ SEOUL: South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Thursday said that a war on the Korean peninsula will never happen again and assured that the US will not take any military action against Pyongyang without Seoul’s consent. In a press conference marking his first 100 days in office, Moon said he wanted “all South Koreans to believe with confidence that there will be no war”, and also downplayed his US counterpart Donald Trump’s belligerent comments over Pyongyang, reports Efe news. “The US and President Trump also said, no matter what option they take about North Korea, all decisions will be made after consulting with and getting agreement with the Republic of Korea,” Moon said. —IANS
Hizb-ul Mujahideen a ‘global terrorist’ group: US ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK
S
tepping up action against terrorists attacking India, President Donald Trump’s Administration has declared Hizb-ul Mujahideen (HM) a “global terrorist organization” in an attempt to choke off financial and other support to it. The State Department announced in Washington on Wednesday that HM, which carries out attacks in Kashmir, has been designated as both a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist group under two different regulations. The action follows the designa-

The Department said: “These designations seek to deny HM the resources it needs to carry out terrorist attacks.”
Sierra Leone mudslide: Burials begin IANS, FREETOWN
P
eople in the Sierra Leone capital began burying victims of a mudslide and flooding that killed more than 400 people on the outskirts of Freetown, as hundreds of residents queued up to identify dead relatives. Nearly half of the 400 people known to have died have already been buried, health officials say. Mass burials have been postponed until Thursday to allow relatives to identify victims, BBC reported. About 600 people are still missing following the disaster that hit the west African nation on August 14.

President Ernest Bai Koroma has declared seven days of mourning while pleading for “urgent support”. The burials involved people who
had already been identified or whose bodies were badly decomposed, Freetown’s chief pathologist Simeon Owizz Koroma said. Some of the most decomposed corpses have already been buried in a mass grave in Waterloo known as the Ebola cemetery after the 2014 disease outbreak, which killed nearly 4,000 people in the country. Volunteers said there were more bodies inside the mortuary that urgently needed to be buried because they had decomposed. On Wednesday, thousands of people gathered outside the morgue at Connaught Hospital in Freetown, hoping to find the bodies of their relatives.
As a result, any property or financial interests in the US or where it has jurisdiction are blocked and people are prohibited from aiding it. Calling HM “one of the largest and oldest militant groups operating in Kashmir”, the Department noted that Salahuddin had claimed responsibility for several attacks including one in 2014 in Kashmir that injured 17 people. Salahuddin operates openly in Pakistan and in the part of Kashmir under its occupation. After the US declared him a global terrorist, he told a Pakistani TV channel that he could strike anywhere in India at any time and that he could get weapons from Pakistan.
Brexit paper opposes Irish border posts LONDON: The UK government has said it does not want any border posts between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic in its new position paper on Brexit. In the latest of a series of papers covering different aspects of Britain’s future relationship with the EU, Brexit Secretary David Davis’ department will say that it hopes to agree upfront with the EU that there will be no need for “physical infrastructure” such as new border posts, the Guardian reported on Wednesday. The new position paper suggests a “new customs partnership”.

Rahul inaugurates Indira Canteens In the initial phase of the launch, 101 canteens will daily serve vegetarian breakfast at Rs 5 per plate, and lunch and dinner at Rs 10 each; Food was distributed free of cost on the first day IANS, BENGALURU
PM Modi dividing the country, says Congress Vice President
C
ongress Vice President Rahul Gandhi this week inaugurated Indira Canteens here for the poor, saying even the “poorest and the weakest in the city cannot go hungry”. “Many people in Bengaluru live in huge houses, drive rich cars and for them food is not an issue. But millions of people here are construction workers, auto rickshaw drivers and barbers who do not have enough money. The Indira Canteens will serve these people,” Gandhi said while inaugurating the canteen at Jayanagar ward here. “We want the poorest and the weakest in the city to know that they cannot go hungry.” Along with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, city Mayor G. Padmavathi, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President G. Parameshwara and other party leaders, Gandhi inspected the canteen named after his grandmother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Besides the one in Jayanagar,

100 other canteens were opened the same day (August 16) for dinner, which was served free of cost to all on the first day, the Chief Minister has said in a statement, calling the launch a “historic day” for Karnataka. In the initial phase of the launch, 101 canteens will daily serve vegetarian breakfast at Rs 5 per plate and lunch and dinner at Rs 10 each in 101 civic wards. “Today is a historic day for Kar-
nataka in our fight against hunger and malnutrition with Indira Canteens getting launched across Bengaluru,” the Chief Minister said. “Indira Canteens will play a significant role in alleviating urban hunger, especially helping the working class and migrant labour,” he said. More canteens will be opened in the remaining 97 wards from October 2 to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
BENGALURU: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi this week accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “dividing” the country by allowing the BJP cadres to “beat up Dalits and kill minorities”. “PM Modi has been busy dividing the country. He allows his party people to beat up Dalits, kill minorities and does not condemn it,” Gandhi said, addressing a gathering of party workers at a public meeting here. He attacked the Prime Minister for not mentioning the Gorakhpur deaths, rising unemployment and the Doklam standoff in his Independence Day speech at the Red Fort. “The PM did not tell you that the rate of unemployment is the highest in eight years. He had promised two crore jobs yearly. What is the Prime Minister doing about giving jobs to youngsters?” Gandhi questioned. “He did not tell you that many babies died in Gorakhpur due to his
health policies,” he said, adding that medical facilities aren’t available for the poor in India. He accused the Modi government of “cutting” the health budget, which he said, was why the hospital could not buy oxygen cylinders. On Jammu and Kashmir, Gandhi lamented that the Modi government had “destroyed in just one month” all the work done by the previous Congress-led government over 10 years to bring peace to the region. “We wanted to embrace Jammu and Kashmir and for them to embrace us. We wanted peace in the region, because with peace Pakistan cannot do anything to Jammu and Kashmir,” Gandhi said. On foreign relations, he said the Modi government was responsible for “creating problems with friendly nations”. “Did anyone hear the Prime Minister say that the Chinese forces are sitting inside Bhutan?”

Action against ABVP workers IANS, HYDERABAD
A
IMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has demanded the arrest of suspected ABVP workers who assaulted a college Principal in Telangana’s Nizamabad district for wearing shoes while hoisting the national flag on Independence Day. He urged Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and Director General of Police Anurag Sharma to act against the culprits. “Every BJP Chief Minister was
wearing shoes (on Independence Day). Will they protest and assault them also? The cowards attacked the Principal only because he is a Muslim,” tweeted Owaisi. “Bloody jokers (sic) ABVP says cannot hoist national flag with shoes. Can (they) show the rule in National Honours Act?” he asked. Mohammed Yakeenuddin, Principal of Government Junior College at Nandipet Ailapur, was assaulted and forced to raise slogans of ‘Bharat Mata ki jai’ by the protestors.
he birth of Lord Krishna was rung in with religious fervor and was followed by colorful ‘Dahi Handi’ with a distinct national flavor by thousands of Govindas all over Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra on the occasion of Krishna Janmashtami. With the bar on heights of human pyramids relaxed by the Bombay High Court, the celebrations were organized with full gusto in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Palghar, Pune, Nashik, Kolhapur, Nagpur and other major cities. Groups of revellers — or Govindas as they are popularly known — went around various venues singing “Govinda Ala Re, Ala, Zara Matki Sambhal Brij Bala” to the accompaniment of drums and music as huge crowds of excited onlookers welcomed them. The Govinda troupes quickly moved onto centre-stage and tried their luck at the ‘Dahi Handi’, pot of milk, butter and curds, hanging high above the ground, between 30-40 feet. in reach of the precariously balanced human pyramids, were rewarded with grand prizes in cash and kind, besides fame and glory. Combining the spirit of ‘Dahi Handi’ with the country’s Independence Day celebrations, the revellers sported tattoos, face colors, attires in the national tri-color, while pots
were decorated in the tri-colour and other symbols of nationalism. In Mumbai, major pyramids built over six to eight tiers were witnessed in Dadar, Ghatkopar, Borivali, Jogeshwari and Mulund, besides Thane and Navi Mumbai, many patronized by local units of major political parties.

India beat Lanka, sweep series The two countries will now go head to head for five ODIs and one T20 match from August 20 IANS, KANDY (SRI LANKA)
I
ndia thrashed Sri Lanka by an innings and 171 runs on the third day of the third and final Test match to sweep the series 3-0 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium here this week. Chasing the first innings deficit of 352 runs after being asked to follow on, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 181 in their second innings. India had posted a total of 487 runs before dismissing the hosts for 135 in the first innings. For India, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin grabbed four wickets and pacer Mohammad Shami three. India had won the first match of the series by 304 runs and then thrashed the hosts by an innings and 53 runs in the second Test. This is the first time that India have whitewashed Sri Lanka in a Test series in their own country. Middle-order batsmen Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews and Niroshan Dickwella staged a desperate battle to prolong Sri Lanka’s struggle in the second innings.
India beat Austria 4-3 in Hockey AMSTELVEEN (NETHERLANDS): The Indian hockey team rode on twin strikes from Ramandeep Singh and Chinglensana Singh Kanjugam to register a sensational 4-3 win over Austria in their final encounter of the Europe Tour here. Ramandeep (25th minute, 32nd min) and Chinglensana (37th min, 60th min) helped India overcome Austria ending the tour with three wins and two loses. After two successive wins against World No.4 The Netherlands, India made a steady start against Austria. While they kept most of the ball possession, penetrating into the striking circle was hard to come by. It was Austria who took an early lead through Oliver Binder’s goal in the 14th minute to end the quarter 1-0. India however, made amends in the second quarter when they won a penalty corner in the 25th minute. A clever variation saw comeback-man Amit Rohidas pass the ball to Ramandeep who deflected the ball into the circle to equalise the score to 1-1. The 10-minute halftime break saw India come back into the game as a stronger team with better attack. They made better circle penetrations and a brilliant breakthrough came in when Ramandeep scored a rollicking field goal in the 32nd minute. —IANS

Coming together after the entire Sri Lankan top order had returned to the pavilion, Chandimal and Angelo Mathews added 65 runs between them in 27.4 overs. Chandimal scored 36 runs off 89 balls with four hits to the fence.
Mathews scored 35 off 96 deliveries with two boundaries and a six studding his innings. Dickwella later scored 41 runs off 52 balls even as the Sri Lankan resistance crumbled. Resuming at the overnight
score of 19/1 in their second outing, Sri Lanka were off to a horrible start, losing three wickets within the first hour of play. The hosts were reduced to 39/4 before Chandimal and Mathews started their fight back.
Sharapova to play major in 18 months IANS, NEW YORK
R
ussian tennis star Maria Sharapova has been given a wild card into the main draw of the US Open, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) said. “Sharapova has played in the US Open main draw 10 times before. In her last visit to New York, in 2014, she fell to Caroline Wozniacki in the round of 16,” the USTA said in a statement, reports Efe. The 30-year-old Sharapova has not appeared in a Grand Slam since losing to American Serena Williams in the Australian Open quarterfinals in 2016.
Maria Sharapova
“The Russian, who has never lost a first-round match at Flushing Meadows, will be unseeded for just the second time. In her US Open debut in 2003, Sharapova was
ranked No. 54. She is currently No. 148,” the USTA said. The five-time Grand Slam champion was initially suspended for two years for doping, but the penalty was later reduced to 15 months. Sharapova tested positive for the banned substance meldonium at the Australian Open last year. The Russian star returned to competition at the Stuttgart Open in April. The 2006 US Open champion was denied a wild card into the French Open by the French federation and pulled out of the Wimbledon qualifying due to an injury.
This is the first ever instance that the entire Sri Lankan top order has been dismissed within 50 runs in both innings of a Test match against India. The hosts suffered their first jolt in the third over of the day when overnight batsman Dimuth Karunaratne was outfoxed by the extra bounce of an Ashwin delivery. The ball brushed the batsman’s gloves before being caught by Ajinkya Rahane in the slips. Malinda Pushpakumara patiently battled 32 deliveries for his one run before being caught behind off Shami’s bowling. His luck finally ran out when he came on the front foot to a fuller length delivery on the off-stump line, only to see the ball knick the outside edge of the bat on its way to the gloves of Indian wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha. Shami then sent back Kusal Mendis in his next over to put the Sri Lankans in deep trouble. That started the downfall for Sri Lanka as none of their tailenders could manage to reach double-figures.
Pillay, Ganguly to play with Maradona KOLKATA: Former India hockey captain Dhanraj Pillay, popular Bengali actor Abir Chatterjee and cricketers Manoj Tiwary and Deep Dasgupta are among those who have confirmed their availability for the charity match to be played here involving Argentine legend Diego Maradona, the organizers said. Federer pulls out of Cincinnati, Nadal will be new World No.1 IANS, BASEL
S
wiss tennis legend Roger Federer has pulled out of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, Ohio, due to a back problem, making Spain’s Rafael Nadal the World No.1 when the rankings come out on August 21 regardless of how far he advances at the event. “I am very sorry to pull out of the Western & Southern Open as I always enjoy playing there,” Federer said in a statement. Britain’s Andy Murray, the current World No.1, also decided to skip the Masters 1000 tournament
in Cincinnati, reports Efe. German rising star Alexander Zverev handed Federer a rare loss in
the 2017 season, rolling to a 6-3, 64 win over the Swiss star in the final of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
“Cincinnati has some of the best fans in the world and I am sorry I will miss them. Unfortunately, I tweaked my back in Montreal and I need to rest this week,” Federer, a seven-time champion at the Western & Southern Open, said. The 36-year-old Federer, winner of a record 19 Grand Slam titles, has turned back the clock in 2017 with major titles at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Nadal, who has 15 Grand Slam singles titles under his belt and won his record 10th French Open title on June 11, will be the topranked player in the world for the first time since July 2014.

Joshi in, Nihalani out I will always try to take opinion of people, says the new CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi
CBFC is a confused organization, says Nihalani
Vidya Balan named a member of CBFC
MUMBAI: National Award winning actress Vidya Balan, who has been named a member of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), says that she is looking forward to the new responsibility where cinema will reflect the society we are living in today. “I am very happy to join the CBFC and I hope to fulfil my responsibilities as a member to the best of my abilities,” she tweeted. “I look forward to this new and exciting phase where our cinema will be allowed to reflect the sensibilities, realities and complexities of the society we are living in today,” she further tweeted. Vidya was on August 11 named to the reconstituted Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), to be now chaired by writer Prasoon Joshi, who has replaced Pahlaj Nihalani. The CBFC has been reconstituted for a period of three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier, a PIB statement said on August 11. —IANS

P
opular Bollywood celebrities like Shyam Benegal, Shoojit Sircar, Madhur Bhandarkar and Rahul Dholakia have hailed the central government’s decision to replace Pahlaj Nihalani with noted lyricist and ad guru Prasoon Joshi as the new chief of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Joshi, who is “happy” to be the new CBFC chief, said: “I will always try to take opinion of people, who have right and positive thinking because this is very new to me.” Though he considers himself unaware about the functioning
of CBFC, Joshi calls himself a “sensible man”, who “believes in taking responsibilities”. Talking about Joshi’s appointment, Sircar told IANS: “I think Prasoon Joshi is absolutely eligible. He has been a part of the mainstream film industry. He knows exactly...he himself is a creative person. So, I think he will understand much deeper what we filmmakers want and what people should watch. It’s a great move that Prasoon Joshi has come on board.” Actors Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Bidita Bag’s Babumoshai Bandookbaaz was the latest Bollywood film which got into trouble with Nihalani, who had suggested 48
MUMBAI: The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is a confused organization, says its former chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani, who insists its guidelines do not stipulate that films should not be cut. During his tenure, which was cut short last week, Nihalani had told the makers of Jab Harry Met Sejal to remove the word ‘intercourse’ from one of the mini trails of the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer. He then allowed the usage of the same word in Bengali film Dhanonjoy. He now says: “I had no problem with the word. ‘Intercourse’ has been allowed in the new Bengali film Dhanonjoy. No, I am not a prude. But I am pragmatic. I know Shah Rukh Khan’s fans are children. And parents wouldn’t have liked him talking about intercourse in Jab Harry Met Sejal.
cuts in the film despite giving it an ‘A’ certificate. “I really appreciate the decision that government of India and the concerned ministry have taken. It is not just victory for our team, but I feel it is victory of the Indian film industry. I want to congratulate Prasoon Joshi. I really appreciate his work and I hope under his tenure as CBFC chief, we will see positive changes in policies and working of CBFC,” Bidita said.
“Let me make one thing clear. The CBFC guidelines do not stipulate that films should not be cut. Yet I was pressurized from the top to not cut, only certify. The CBFC is a confused organization. We need progressive guidelines. Without them, we are stuck in a time-warp.” Nihalani has been replaced as CBFC chairperson by writer-adman Prasoon Joshi. Nihalani says he was surprised to read that the same filmmakers whose films he had cleared on priority were rejoicing his ouster.
Kiran Shyam Shroff, one of the producers of Babumoshai Bandookbaaz, sees the move as a a welcome change. “I think the incidents during ‘Babumoshai Bandoojbaaz’ put the final nail in the coffin. In the last few years, most of the producers faced problems to get certification of their films.” “Every time, after the controversy, people demanded his resignation but did not happen.”
‘Mooh bola beta’ Shah Rukh ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’: Lacks connection Khan visits Dilip Kumar MUMBAI: Shah Rukh Khan paid a visit to veteran actor Dilip Kumar, who calls the superstar his mooh bola beta. The visit came after the 94-yearold returned home following a week long stay at the Lilavati Hospital here for kidney related problems. The veteran actor’s wife Saira Bano on August 15 took to Twitter to share a string of photographs of Shah Rukh Khan and Dilip Kumar. In one of the photographs the Dear Zindagi star is seen kissing Dilip Kumar’s forehead. “Message from Saira Banu: Sahab’s mooh bola beta (son) Shah Rukh Khan visited Sahab today. Sharing some photos of the evening,” the caption said. His wife also said Dilip Kumar was “doing much better”. “Shah Rukh Khan visited Sahab this evening. Sahab’s doing much

better since (he) returned from the hospital. Shukar Allah.” Dilip Kumar was admitted to the hospital on August 2 following dehydration and urinary tract infection. Last seen on the big screen in Qila in 1998, the actor was honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015. He is known for films like Devdas, Mughal-e-Azam and Karma.
f you are content to simply bask in the company of a middle-aged Shah Rukh Khan and half-his-age Anushka Sharma, the two attractive leads who star as Harinder Singh Nehra aka Harry, a Punjabi, and Sejal Jhaveri, a Gujarati, then this romance is for you. Otherwise, you would be questioning your motive for sitting through this film. Once again, it’s hard to put too much hate on a film that clearly tries hard to dazzle its fans, but the elephant in the room here is clearly the script. Yes, this is a wonderful film to gawk at as the locales in Europe are beautiful, but you will find that you are doing just that. The plot meanders on multiple occasions and the characters, especially Sejal, is given some of the most atrocious dialogues that make you chuckle inadvertently. dejected and defiant, she opts out of the group to search her ring. She ropes in her tour guide Harry in her endeavour. The premise, albeit cliched, and the setting promise an entertaining romance. But alas, it is nowhere palpable. Imitaz Ali’s latest oeuvre seems to be mounted on an outdated, perfunctory script packed with cardboard thin characters, silly conversations and a weak plot that lacks depth, drama and the serious-
ness of a heart-felt romance. This makes the entire narrative seem forced and pretentious, and loses connect with the audience. Added to the anguish are the performances. Though both the lead actors are ace performers, Shah Rukh does not seem to get out of his comfort zone. His performance lacks lustre and freshness. Anushka matches Shah Rukh with her energy levels but together their on-screen romance lacks chemistry and chutzpah. Director Imtiaz Ali seems to have taken the easy route assuming that a film with Shah Rukh Khan will automatically work.

ndia this week celebrated its 71st Independence Day peacefully, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi declaring that “goli” (bullet) and “gaali” (abuse) cannot resolve the Kashmir problem. Millions poured out of their homes to take part in events big and small all across the country. A shutdown called by separatists affected life in the Kashmir Valley and in some parts of the northeast. The highlight of the day was Modi’s fourth speech from the 17th century Red Fort where he unfurled the national flag and vowed to build a “New India” minus corruption and terrorism by 2022. “Security of the country is our priority. Internal security is our priority. Whether it is our oceans or borders, cyber world or space, for all kinds of security India is capable of defeating all such inimical forces,” Modi said
amid a dragging border row with China. He said “bullets” and “abuses” cannot solve Jammu and Kashmir’s problem but love can, urging people to embrace Kashmiris and asking the militants to take to the mainstream. Beyond India, the day was also celebrated by Indians living abroad. Even the Indian cricket team got into the act at its hotel in Colombo. Amid clear weather, thousands thronged the Red Fort to listen to Modi. Similar scenes were seen in almost all major venue across the country. From tricolor marks on cheeks to flag designs printed on T-shirts, from tricolor caps to suits, the Indian flag could be seen everywhere. Despite persistent tensions, border

ammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti this week welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day remarks on Kashmir. In his Red Fort speech Modi said neither bullets nor abuses would resolve the Kashmir issue, it can only be resolved by embracing the people with love. In a statement Mufti said she has all along maintained that dialogue and peaceful means could alone resolve the issue as violence had only wrought more destruction in the state. She said the slogan coined by her party 15 years back which said neither guns nor bullets, only dialogue would resolve the Kashmir issue was as relevant today as it was then. Senior separatist leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq also reacted to Modi’s statement by posting on his Twitter handle “Welcome @narendramodi also believes Goli & Gaali will not help resolve Kashmir if insaniyat & Insaaf replace them re solution can become a reality”. Meanwhile, a protest shutdown

called by separatist leaders affected life adversely across the Kashmir Valley even though it was a public holiday on account of Independence Day. Despite the protest call, all official functions including parades, flag hoisting and cultural programmes were held peacefully across the Valley. While educational institutions, government offices, banks and post offices remained closed
because of the holiday, no public or private transport moved on the roads. Markets remained closed in Srinagar city and all other major cities and towns of the Valley. Train services between Baramullah and Bannihal were suspended in the wake of the protest call. Cellular and internet services were down for over five hours and were restored after official parades at the district headquarters ended.
MUMBAI: Maharashtra celebrated the 71st Independence Day with patriotic fervour, though the celebrations were partly marred due to sudden heavy rains that lashed parts of the state, including Mumbai and coastal Konkan. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis unfurled the national tricolor at his residence and near Mantralaya and took the salute, while his ministerial colleagues attended flag-hoisting ceremonies in various districts across the state. Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu Governor C.V. Rao this year spent the day in Chennai where he was scheduled to take part in various I-Day functions, a Raj Bhavan official said. Solemn flag-hoisting functions were organized at the Bombay High Court, and headquarters of the Central Railway, Western Railway and the Konkan Railway.
Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar hoisted the tricolor at the BMC headquarters in the presence of Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta and other top officials. On the occasion, the Mayor inaugurated a special mural gifted by Argentina to adorn the entrance of the Humboldt Penguins enclosure. Acting Consul-General of Argentina Alejandra Zothner Meyer, Deputy ConsulGeneral Andrea Alba Gonzalez and renowned mural artist Pablo Ramirez Arnol were present on the occasion. There were colorful I-Day functions organized by the armed forces stationed in Mumbai. Abhinav Deshmukh, Superintendent of Police, Gadchiroli — the hotbed of Maoist activities in the state — paid homage to 191 police personnel who laid down their lives while protecting democracy in the Naxal-hit regions of eastern Maharashtra.

India must be compassionate and egalitarian society, says President Recalling the role of freedom fighters, Kovind said people need to draw inspiration from them and imbibe their spirit and invoke it in the task of nation building IANS, NEW DELHI
C
alling for creating a New India by 2022, President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday said the country must be a compassionate and egalitarian society that does not discriminate on gender or religious background. In his first address to the nation, on the eve of 71st Independence Day, he hailed the government’s demonetization decision and the people’s “wholehearted” support in the battle against corruption and black money, voluntarily giving up LPG fuel subsidy and the roll out of Goods and Services Tax. He referred to Gandhi, Nehru, Patel, Bose and various other freedom fighters and also invoked Jana Sangh ideologue Deen Dayal Upadhyay, saying New India must include “that integral humanist component that is in our DNA and which has defined our country and our civilisation”. “New India must be a society rushing towards the future, but also a compassionate society,” he said. The second Dalit President said India must be a compassionate society where the traditionally disadvantaged, whether SCs, STs or OBCs are part of the country’s national development process. Recalling the role of freedom fighters, Kovind said people need to draw inspiration from them and imbibe their spirit and invoke it in the task of nation building. “The stress on the moral basis of policy and action, belief in unity

and discipline, faith in a synthesis of heritage and science, and promotion of the rule of law and of education — all of it was located in a partnership between citizen and government,” he said. Asking people to work with unity and purpose to ensure that benefits of government policy reach all sections of society, the President said for this the partnership between citizens and government remains essential. He said it is for each individual
to ensure a Swachh Bharat and make India open defecation free. He said it is also for each individual to ensure that daughters are not discriminated against and get the best education while promoting idea of “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao.” “The government can frame laws and strengthen law enforcement - but it is for each of us to be a law-abiding citizen. And to build a law-abiding society. The government is pushing transparency and
eliminating corruption in public recruitment and procurement - but it is for each of us to answer to our inner conscience in everyday life.” Favoring making GST an essential part of everyday business culture, the President said he was happy that the transition to GST system has been smooth. “It should be a matter of pride for all of us that the taxes we pay are used for nation building — to help the poor and the marginalized, to build rural and urban
infrastructure, and to strengthen our border defenses,” he said. Talking of a strong partnership between citizens and the government that will allow the country to meet the goals of New India, Kovind said: “Your immense patience and understanding in the days following demonetization — and your whole-hearted support in the battle against corruption and black money — reflected a responsible and enlightened society. Demonetization has boosted our efforts to build an honest society. We must sustain this spirit and this momentum.” He said there is need to adopt technology to empower people and achieve the goal of poverty elimination in a single generation. “Poverty and New India are simply not compatible.” The President said while it is natural for people to think of their families, they must also think of their societies. “We must heed the call for that extra degree of selflessness, that extra something beyond just duty,” he said, asking why each citizen cannot imbibe the spirit of selflessness displayed by soldiers on the borders, police and para-military forces that combat terrorism and farmers who toil for food security. Referring to those who had given up LPG fuel subsidy for the sake of poor families, the President said: “I salute those families that gave up their subsidy. No law or government order made them do what they did. Their response came from within.

Dr John has many firsts credited to him in his illustrious career as an ophthalmologist and cornea specialist. He is one of the most eminent eye specialists not just in Chicago land area but also across the US and internationally. Dr John who has been a Chicago resident for many years now lives and practices in the Chicago suburbs. With offices in Tinley Park, Oak Brook and Oak Lawn areas in Chicago land and many other professional appearances across the world it needs no mention that the doctor leads a jet-setting life. But amidst all his professional commitments he remains dedicated to his cause of making a difference in his patients’ life not only through his treatments but also with his attitude.
AN EYE ON EXCELLENCE filed of ophthalmology. He has been listed as Chicago’s Top Doctor in the Chicago Magazine for several years and featured in this magazine. He received the Physician Medal of Honor, for continued cooperation in promoting and affirming achievements in the area of Eye Surgery from the Serbian Society for Cataract & Refractive Surgery, Belgrade, Serbia. He has been listed as one of the US Premier surgeons by Ocular Surgery News. He has been selected by Castle Connolly Medical, Ltd as America’s Top Doctor for many years. He has been named under America’s Top Ophthalmologist for many years by the Consumer Research Council of America. He has received multiple awards from various ophthalmic societies in the world.
AN EXTRAORDINARY ACHIEVER r John is one of the key opinion leaders in the US in the field of ophthalmology. He was the first eye specialist in the world to use an amniotic membrane in the surface of the eye in patients suffering from acute disease known as toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). Today the method he devised has gone on to become a standard of care procedure in such cases (TEN and Stevens Johnson syndrome, which are potentially blinding diseases) across the world. Dr John also has the honor of receiving a United States patent for developing the eye aspiration device and method. He has also designed several surgical instruments for advanced corneal surgeries. Despite some of the most notable honors for Dr John happiness is having the ability to contribute towards curing people of diseases. It is a job that is demanding but also gratifying. Talking about his landmark treatment Dr John says, “Years ago I was treating a six-year-old patient who took antibiotics for an ear infection and he developed toxic epidermal necrolysis. It is a serious disease and can be even more threatening as compared to Steven John syndrome. Patients can lose their eyesight if not cured. It was while working on this patient that I developed this method of using amniotic membrane in the surface of the eye to cure it. I am happy to report
D
that the patient today is blessed with perfect vision while the technique has been adopted by doctors all across the world to help their patients fight such a threatening condition.” On being asked about his other visionary contributions the doctor says, “Along with my team, I also had the privileged experience of demonstrating for the first time the usage of cryopreserved amniotic membrane to improve dry eye condition in patients and for the first time demonstrating corneal nerve regeneration in moderate to severe dry eye states. Hence, by using the amniotic membrane there is corneal nerve regeneration thus resulting in improvement in the symptoms and signs of these patients with dry-eye disease. While Dr John’s dossier of achievements is quite impressive it may be mentioned that the pioneer also has contributed his knowledge and skill in the no-stitch corneal transplant procedure. The method called DMEK, originally developed in the Netherlands, is exemplary, as it leaves no sutures. There’s more to his achievements, US News & World Report listed Dr John as Top Doctors 2011 – America’s Top Doctor with icon – “Icon denotes that a doctor, in Castle Connolly’s estimation, is among the top 1% in the nation in his or her specialty.” He received the Gold Medal from Indian Intraocular Implant and Refractive Surgery Society (IIIRSS) for contributions in the

I have given a keynote address at the 22nd congress of the ESCRS in Paris in 2004.” The doctor informs that amongst his other professional achievements he has developed new surgical techniques with the use of the artificial cornea in patients who are considered high risk for conducting regular corneal transplants. Dr John talking about some of the other advanced treatments he has evolved says, “in patients suffering from a condition that causes a protrusion of cornea, I do lamellar keratoplasty which is a form of corneal transplantation where the inner most membrane of cornea is left in place so the body will not reject the transplant.” OTHER INTERESTS While there is no doubt that the dedicated doctor is always focused to find out other landmark treatments and breakthrough technologies in his field of specialization but quite impressively he manages to take out time for his other interests too. It’s not very often that we hear of a practicing physician who loves playing the drums and has been a part of a rock and roll band too. He says, “My goal as a motivational speaker remains to motivate people to make themselves better and try to make this world a better place for all. One person cannot achieve this lofty goal, we need the unification of people in this effort.” When the doctor is not inspiring through his spoken words he chooses to encourage through his written words. The culmination of their work came on August 12 as six teams of five girls raced their newly-transformed fridge cars around the Picasso at the Daley Center to win the Icebox Derby (IBD) STEM Cup and other prizes. More than 230 girls applied online to join the 2017 IBD program, now in its fourth year. Each Icebox Derby contestant will receive a scholarship for completing the program and the first place winners will receive a laptop/notebook and an additional $1,500 scholarship. MIKA MARRED THE SERENITY OF EVENT AND MOCKED THE SENTIMENTS OF INDIANS
Spirit of Nationalism and Patriotism was hugely compromised by loose lips of Mik MIKA MARRED THE SERENITY OF EVENT AND MOCKED THE SENTIMENTS OF INDIANS Spirit of Nationalism and Patriotism was hugely compromised by loose lips of Mika Singh. In the country of tolerance and declared by many as in tolerance – How long nation will suffer from so called Pseudo Demi Gods, whom millions of fans around the globe follow and idolized as their icon. The controversy which has taken to a next level of debate especially on Social media by some so called Social Media Gladiators (SMGs) to do the correct of others. The controversy of Mika Singh has many element and starts with what he did – Mika Singh in one of his TV advertising byte spoke of his upcoming concert in Houston on Aug 12 and in Chicago on Aug 13, 2017. Quote UN quote – “I am coming to USA to celebrate the Independence Day of Our India which got independence on Aug 15th and Our Pakistan got Independence on 14th August. As soon as this byte was on air – MNS one political organization started their
political mill and declared total ban for Mika Singh. Few Media houses also raised the issue. Here in Chicago SOME organizations raised the issue through press conferences and social media debate. Most of the organization’s issue was to cancel the concert of Mika Singh as the part of India Day Celebration in Naperville, IL by India Outreach Association. Subsequently Mika Singh issued a statement which was deceiving in which he stated that he is not going for Pakistan Day celebration in Houston. In fact there were two events in Houston. One in morning at community center to commemorate the Pakistan Day and later on in the evening the musical concert organized and promoted by people from Pakistan. Mika Singh said that he was doing it free – which was omitted intentional as it was only a small appearance in morning. Eventually Mika Singh performed in Houston and performed in Chicago. He tried to subdue the hue and cry of community by saying that he is a innocent man without any hidden agenda and people pull him in controversy. Mika came, Mika sang and Mika flew back with big wallet and the community kept on arguing of to be or not be. Whether community came to event because of Mika or they came for nationalism and patriotism. This is a subject of debate. This debate is still going on Social Media as in the event by Consul Office in their celebration Consul General of Pakistan was invited and he attended the event. Celebrities are Liabilities. Financial, Social and Emotional – They are expenseive, they have no clue of what they speak, probably some have lack of education and knowledge of world around them. They don’t keep themselves abreast. Unfortunate they are most of the times role models and icons for many and millions imitate and follow their speeches and statements. Money before Nation. Mika came to USA, wooed everyone. Performed, made money and flew back without acknowledging and apologizing the blunder. Covered it by saying he is innocent and is always being sucked into controversy. One distinguished video photographer, self-proclaimed savior of Hindus who had raised great noise on Raakhi Sawant as all hell broke loose on her not so decent outfit, kept mum on Mika, danced to the tune of Mika and silently endorsed the uncouth statement of Mika Singh. Krishna Bansal(KB) though either could have ignored the issue all together or keeping in mind the sentiments of Indian diaspora would have changed the star/ singer. Just for a thought will any Pakistani artist will perform at India Independence celebration. The funds , volunteers, name of country all are collected and used in the name of India and when it comes to reciprocate the sentiments – It is deemed fit to ignore conveniently as and what suits. It seems that whole show was carried on by Krishna Bansal alone, he has too much on his shoulder – envisioning the event, coordination with City, Collecting funds, inviting stars and organizing the event. Now this is the time whole team should come forward, take and share some responsibilities and stand with KB shoulder to shoulder. Even on stage only KB was visible, others were either too tiny in stature to mention or it was not considered appropriate to bring them on stage to express gratitude for their hard and dedicate work. Many social and Indian Associations did press conferences, issued statements to media, wrote long texts messages to condemn, discard and boycott Mika Singh if he does not cancel his tour of Pakistan Day event. Mika Singh in personal twitter to his contact in Chicago promised and declared that he has cancelled the event, in fact it was lie and he was chronic liar to fool Indians and hurt their sentiments. Our doubled faced, dual expression- video photographer, a staunch Republican played double jeopardy – One way condemned Mika Singh in press conference and other end stood with Mika and IOC to condemn freedom of expression on hurt sentiments by Indian community – boycotting Consul General of India for inviting few of Consul Generals in India Independence Day celebration. These few and sometimes self-proclaimed journalists conveniently repudiate their allegiance well suited to their self. IOC Chairman challenged -those who were vocal enough to raise the concern on Mika’s statement- and asked why they did not walke out of Consulate celebration. IOC Chairman took personal offensive of expression of hurt sentiments of Indians in Chicago and either tried to evade the issue or dodge the issue with counter offensive. Iftekhar Shareef expressed his amazement on those who were in league with Mika Singh for his un- acceptable statement. Though Shareef condemned and demanded the cancellation Houston event by Mika Singh, he fully supported the India Independence Day celebration at Naperville. Sohan Joshi demanded an apology from Mika Singh. Kanti N Patel – President of FIA was un-happy with the turn of events and by Mika’s un- patriotic statement. Bhailal Patel, Trustee FIA also joined in condemning the behavior of Mika and demand for cancellation of event in Houston. Dr Sanhita explained in detail about why it’s important to react and even though existence of India is no danger by Mika’s statement it certainly hurts the sentiments. Many Social Activists of community crossed the line and started beating the wrong path and complained, contacted and tried to persuade City of Naperville to withdraw the support for the event. The correct sentiments were portrayed in wrong way by few. Though Mika’s statement was un-acceptable and he should have withdrawn himself from Houston event – he should have kept country before his earnings, but cancelling the event at the last minute from Naperville would have caused certainly a chaos and there would have no replacement available at the last minute. A war of words started on social media with taking a ugly turn , getting out of focus with initial issue of Mika Singh and stoop low to personal level of allegations and counter allegations. At the time of going to press the dual was still on Social Media with many gladiators out there to protect and condemn the Mika.

Businessman files false H-1B visa applications BY A STAFF WRITER n Indian American businessman from New Hampshire has been fined $40,000 and placed on three years’ probation by a federal court on charges of filing false H-1B visa applications. Rohit Saksena had previously pleaded guilty to making false statements to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, according to court documents. Saksena, 42, president and chief executive officer of Saks IT Group LLC, a company based in Manchester, New Hampshire, allegedly filed 45 fraudulent visa applications, claiming that his company was hiring foreign

workers to provide professional services to a California-based company. However, the California company had not entered into a contract with Saks IT Group and had no vacancies for foreign workers. Saksena knew that Rohit Saksena the foreign workers would not be employed, acting US attorney John Farley said on August 10.
Saksena filed visa applications that falsely claimed jobs awaited the foreign workers at the California company. He supported those applications with bogus independent contractor agreements between his IT group and the other company with sham work orders that purported to show that the foreign workers would provide professional services for the California company. “Some of the false visa applications resulted in foreign workers receiving H-1B visas. Many of the fraudulent applications were denied once Saksena’s deception came to light,” the justice department said.
Rape charges dropped against Indian student BY A STAFF WRITER exual assault charges have been dropped against an Indian student of the University of Southern California (USC) who was accused of raping an intoxicated young woman in her dorm room after video footage proved the victim initiated contact. Armaan Premjee, originally from Mumbai, is studying business administration at USC. He was arrested on April 11 on charges of sexually assaulting a female student on the night of April 1. Premjee was charged with rape by use of drugs and also of sexual penetration with a foreign object. He was released the same day on bail of $100,000. A Los Angeles Superior Court judge viewed video footage from Banditos Taco and Tequila club near the USC campus, where Premjee and
S
Armaan Premjee
the woman made initial contact. The security camera footage shows the woman initiating contact with Premjee, and also shows her handsignaling to a friend that she planned to have sex with Premjee.
A voice on the security camera footage suggests the alleged victim is also Indian. Security camera footage from the victim’s dorm shows her and Premjee entering the building, and the woman swiping her access card. The judge ruled on July 26 that there was strong evidence to believe the sex was consensual. A roommate found the two having sex in a common area of their dorm room. By that point, the alleged victim had passed out. She was later taken to the hospital for alcohol poisoning. Premjee left when the roommate confronted him. USC is continuing to investigate the ‘misconduct incident.’ The university’s rules state that a person who is intoxicated is “not capable of giving valid, affirmative consent.” Affirmative or active consent is defined as a verbal “yes.”

Indian American pathologist Ravindra Kolhe also said that Watson has the ability to rapidly identify multiple variations in BRAF along with variations in nearly a dozen other genes known to contribute to the skin cancer as well as the therapies to target them. “The majority of the time, we just tell patients they have a cancer,” Kolhe, an alumnus of Mahatma Gandhi Medical College in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, said. “Watson can help us provide more comprehensive, personalized care to patients.” Kolhe, a breast and molecular pathologist at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, sequences DNA and RNA from a patient’s tumor, feeds the information to Watson, a question-answering computer system that, unlike traditional search engines, can gather evidence and analyze data but also generate knowledge. “In 20 minutes, Watson looks at what is abnormal in the sample, then takes the abnormalities and looks all around the world to see what are the drugs already used against them, other drugs out there that might be useful,” he explained while presenting an update on Watson Genomic Analysis during the International Cancer Genomics Consortium being held in Denver.. Decisions about treatment clearly are still in the hands of physicians and patients, but Watson can make unprecedented information immediately available to make decisions about what treatment is best for an individual patient, Kolhe noted.
