S OLYMPIC FEVER SET TO BEGIN IANS, BRASILIA

ome of Brazil’s best athletes were among the first 10 people in the South American country to carry the Olympic torch, which arrived in the capital city of Brasilia from Switzerland this week, beginning its journey through the country. The Olympic flame began its 95day journey through over 300 of Brazil’s cities. The relay will come to an end at the Olympic Games official inauguration ceremony which will take place at the Maracana Stadium on August 5 in Rio de Janeiro, Xinhua reported. Two-time Olympic champion in volleyball at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, Fabiana Claudino, received the torch from the hands of Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff at the Planalto Palace (the official workplace of the president). Claudino began her journey through the Ministries Esplanade, a large avenue where the public authorities buildings are located. Claudino was chosen as the first torch bearer by Rousseff in honor of

Assumpcao (artistic gymnastics) and Adriana Araujo, who won Brazil’s first Olympic medal in women’s boxing with a bronze medal in the 60 kg category at London 2012, were also among the privileged few that were chosen to carry the torch at the start of its journey in the South American country. Gabriel Medina, Brazil’s first athlete to win a surfing world title in 2014 and Paula Pequeno, who was voted the best female volleyball player at Beijing 2008, also carried the torch. The journey in the capital’s central area came to an end inside Brasilia’s cathedral where Paula Pequeno handed over the torch to marathon runner Vanderlei Cordeiro. Cordeiro experienced a dramatic moment in Olympic history when he was knocked over by a religious protester when he was leading with just six kilometres to go until the finish line at Athens 2004. Cordeiro managed to get up again and recovered to end the race in third place, rewarded with the Pierre de Coubertin medal for his Olympic spirit.

Another moment of great excitement in the torch relay was when 12-year-old Syrian refugee, Hanan Daqqah, carried the torch. The young girl lives with her family in the city of Sao Paulo and was chosen in a symbolic gesture of solidarity with the world’s refugees. The beginning of the relay was not without acts of protests and support as the people involved took advantage of the relay’s international visibility to show banners against and in favor of Brazil’s President Rousseff. The president is facing an eventual impeachment process against her. Currently the case is being analysed by the Senate and if they decide to continue with the process, Rousseff could be removed from office for 180 days to allow for a thorough investigation. A total of 141 people will carry the Olympic torch a distance of 108 km through Brasilia on a route that will include the Juscelino Kubitschek bridge, Lake Paranoa, the Mane Garrincha Stadium, the Claudio Coutinho water-sports complex and the National Park.

KOLKATA: Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan waved and showered flying kisses to fans off the pitch as his team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) battled it out against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at the Eden Gardens here THIS WEEK. Nearly halfway through KKR's innings, Khan — clad in a white Tshirt and sporting a beard — was first flashed on the giant screen having a balloon fight with son AbRam. He later realized the loud Eden cheers were for him and the "Dilwale" star acknowledged the love by standing up and waving. The superstar then took AbRam on his lap and playfully hit him on the head with the KKR balloon. Earlier in the day, Khan had tweeted about his arrival which was also his first 'home match' this season. “Practising our dance moves lil AbRam and me as we prep for our first match in Kolkata. C Knight Riders (KKR) grab a sevenrun victory over Kings XI Punjab. The victory also propelled the hosts to the top of the table with 12 points from 9 games. Russell ended with figures of 4-20 from his four over as Glenn Maxwell's scintillating 42-ball 68 went in vain. Chasing KKR's 165/3, the visitors got off to a disastrous start with Marcus Stoinis (0) heading back in the fourth ball of the very first over. The Australian tried to lift the Andre Russell delivery but was only able to chip it till Piyush Chawla at mid off. Kings XI were dented further as Manan Vohra (0) and captain Murali Vijay (6) departed in quick succession with the score reading 13/3.

ricket icon Sachin Tendulkar on Tuesday accepted the Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) offer to become goodwill ambassador of the Indian contingent for the 2016 Olympics at Rio de Janeiro. Tendulkar now joins Bollywood superstar Salman Khan and 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medallist Abhinav Bindra as the goodwill ambassadors for the Rio-bound contingent. “I have had the privilege and honor of representing our nation for 24 years and I continue to bat for India off the field. The welfare of sportspersons and encouraging them to give their best is very dear to me,” Tendulkar wrote in a letter to the IOA after accepting the offer. “I strongly believe that the sportspersons from different parts of the country, pursuing their unique skills are the true ambassadors of the growing sporting culture in this country,” added the 43-year-old cricket player whose international career spanned from 1989 to 2013. Nadal, Murray progress in Madrid MADRID: Spanish No.1 Rafael Nadal enjoyed a comfortable debut in the Mutua Madrid Open here. The fifth seed, who comes into the Madrid Open on the back of wins in Monte Carlo and Barcelona, had few problems in defeating Andrey Kuznetsov 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 18 minutes on Tuesday, reports Xinhua. Reigning champion Andy Murray had to work a bit harder against Radek Stepanek, who he defeated 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-1 in a match which lasted just over two and a half hours.

Stepanek, who had to qualify for Madrid, looked powerful in the first two sets, faded badly in the final set allowing Murray to progress. In the women’s competition, Spain’s Carla Sanchez made up for Monday’s surprise defeat of number 3 seed Gabine Muguruza as she progressed to the third round 6-3, 62 over big hitting German Sabin Lisciki. Meanwhile, sixth seed Simona Halep had a placid 6-1, 6-1 victory against Italian Karin Knapp in an hour and two minutes.

Donald Trumps rivals

Lovely to meet Obama: Priyanka

After a decisive victory in the Indiana state primaries, Trump takes control of Republican Party as its presumptive presidential nominee IANS, WASHINGTON

D

onald Trump assumed control of the Republican Party as its presumptive presidential nominee this week after Ohio Governor John Kasich exited the race and planned for a six-month battle for the White House against Democrat front-runner Hillary Clinton. Trump, who has proudly touted how he has self-funded his campaign, said post-Kasich dropping out that he would begin actively seeking donations for his campaign and raise money for the national party, part of the arduous task of coalescing a party deeply divided over his toxic brand of politics, The Washington Post reported. Trump acknowledged that he would have to liquidate some of his real estate holdings to muster the hundreds of millions of dollars needed to self-fund a credible fall campaign. Party leaders are scrambling to stave off a parade of prominent Republicans endorsing Clinton, but already there were notable defections. The two living Republican past presidents, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, have no plans to endorse Trump, according to their spokesmen. The Clinton campaign released a brutal video mash-up of Republican rivals condemning his charac-

ter and fitness for office, while the former secretary of state called him “a loose cannon” and invited Republicans and independents seeking an alternative to Trump to join her. “Let’s get off the red or the blue team. Let’s get on the American team,” Clinton told CNN.

However, Trump said he was hardly fretting about whether leading Republicans, such as 2012 presidential nominee Mitt Romney, would eventually back him. “I believe that the people are going to vote for the person,” Trump said, adding “They love their party, but until this year, the

party was going in the wrong direction. We’ve made the party much bigger.” Kasich, a career politician whose sunny campaign failed to gain traction in a year dominated by antiestablishment anger, suspended his bid on Wednesday in an emotional speech tinged with wistful anecdotes about town-hall meetings he called “absolutely magic”. “The people of our country changed me,” Kasich said, adding “The spirit, the essence of America lies in the hearts and souls of us. You see, some missed this message. It wasn’t sexy. It wasn’t a great sound bite.” Trump was the presumptive Republican Party’s presidential nominee following a decisive victory in the Indiana state primaries and the decision by rival Ted Cruz to drop out of the race. “It is a beautiful thing to watch, and a beautiful thing to behold,” Trump said during a victory speech. “We are going to make America great again.” Cruz tried everything to pull off a last-ditch win in Indiana, including the unusual move of selecting HP CEO Carly Fiorina as his running mate even though he was not the nominee. He also forged a pact with opponent John Kasich that would allow him to focus on Indiana while the Ohio governor would devote his time to later states.

WASHINGTON: Actress Priyanka Chopra was elated to meet the “very funny and charming” US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner here. The 33-year-old actress, who found global recognition with her character Alex Parrish in the American TV series “Quantico”, looked ravishing in a deep-cut, striped black gown at the dinner held last weekend. Priyanka also shared a photograph of herself along with the two. The US President looked dapper in a black suit and crisp white shirt which he teamed with a black bow tie, while Michelle Obama looked lovely in an embellished beige gown. “Lovely to meet the very funny and charming Barack Obama and the beautiful Michelle Obama,” Priyanka captioned the photgraph. “Thank you for a lovely evening. Cannot wait to start working on your girls education programme,” she added. The 2016 White House Correspondents’ dinner was hosted by comedian Larry Wilmore. --IANS

Judge orders questioning of Hillary Clinton’s aides IANS, WASHINGTON

A

federal judge has ordered questioning of Democrat front-runner Hillary Clinton’s top aides about her secret email server. Top Clinton aides Huma Abedin and Cheryl D. Mills will be deposed, as will Bryan Pagliano, who reportedly maintained the clintonemail.com server and Clinton’s email account tied to the secret system, The Washington Times reported. Clinton herself could also have to answer questions in the open records case brought by conservative foundation, Judicial Watch, according to Judge Emmet G. Sullivan’s order. “The circumstances surrounding

approval of Clinton’s use of clintonemail.com for official government business, as well as the manner in which it was operated, are issues that need to be explored in discovery to enable the Court to resolve, as a matter of law, the adequacy of the State Department’s search of relevant records in response to Judicial Watch’s request,” Judge Sullivan wrote. He gave Judicial Watch eight weeks to conduct the interviews, meaning they will be finished just weeks before Clinton hopes to accept the Democratic presidential nomination at the party’s national convention in Philadelphia in late July. The emails have affected Clinton’s presidential campaign from the start and have damaged

her standing among many voters, who question her honesty. Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump openly speculated that Clinton will be indicted at the end of an FBI investigation into the server. Clinton set up the server at her home in New York in 2009, soon after she became state secretary. Her messages were erroneously shielded from disclosure for six years, until she belatedly returned some 30,000 to the department in December 2014. Clinton said there were 30,000 other messages from her time in office that were private and did not implicate her government activities. Clinton declined to turn over those messages.

No intention to avoid Pak: US The US defends the assistance it has provided to Pakistan despite strong opposition from certain lobbies in Congress IANS, ISLAMABAD

T

he US has “absolutely no intention” of diminishing its relationship with Pakistan, the US State Department has said. The department’s spokesperson has refused to criticize Pakistan for saying it would look for other options if a deal for buying eight F-16 fighter jets from the US fails. “These are sovereign decisions

that nations make with respect to their defense needs, and it’s up to Pakistan... how they’ll fulfill their defense needs,” Dawn online quoted spokesman John Kirby as saying. Kirby made the remarks when asked whether Islamabad’s relations with the US would come under strain if Pakistan bought fighter jets from China. “As for the relationship, as I’ve said many, many times, it’s an important one. It’s critical; it’s vital

he K.P. Oli government in Nepal teetered precariously this week after key ally UCPN (Maoist) decided to withdraw support and form a national unity government under its leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, with the main opposition Nepali Congress and Madhesi parties agreeing to back its move. The Oli-led government now appears unlikely to present the budget as the government is set to be overthrown in the coming days.

Sri Lanka sees rise in tourist arrivals COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s tourist arrivals rose 11.6 percent in April to 136,367, from the previous year, figures from the Tourism Promotion Bureau showed. India remained the top market with 25,890 travelers, a 12.3-percent growth from the previous year, Xinhua news agency reported. China came second with 18,972 travelers, a 37.6 percent increase from the same period last year. Visitors from Japan increased 25 percent to 3,172. Western European arrivals were up 12.2 percent to 39,243, with Britain’s arrivals up 6.9 percent to 12,006. From January to April, 721,185 tourists have visited Sri Lanka. The government expects the year to end with a larger number. —IANS

The overnight political move by the Maoists brought a political storm in Kathmandu and Unified Communist Party of Nepal (UCPN-Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal took centre-stage of politics all of a sudden. The Maoist party is among the key parties in the nearly sevenmonth-old Oli government and, due to the numbers factor, the government may easily collapse if it withdraws support. relationship.” Kirby defended the assistance the US has provided to Pakistan despite strong opposition from certain lobbies in Congress. Last week, Congress prevented the US administration from subsidising the $700 million F-16 deal. Under the arrangement, Pakistan was to pay $270 million for the eight aircraft while the US was to provide about $430 million from its foreign military financing facility. A meeting between the top leaders of Nepali Congress and Madhes-based parties on Wednesday decided to topple the Oli government and the Madhes parties urged the NC to take the lead. However, the Nepali Congress, the largest party in parliament, has not yet officially decided on the name of the new prime minister -- offering the post instead to Dahal. The Nepali Congress and Madhes-based parties look set to support the Maoist bid to topple the Oli government. The NC has already launched a signature campaign against the government which it will use later for a no-confidence motion against the government, sources said.

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani court has granted bail to the five accused who were arrested on blasphemy charges on the complaint of a Sikh youth for publicly disgracing his turban. Mahinder Pall Singh said six attackers publicly disgraced his turban and humiliated him for complaining about a bus that broke down while he was traveling from Faisalabad to Multan city in Punjab province. Investigation Officer Abdul Sattar said bail was granted to Baqir Ali, Rashid Gujjar, Faiz Alam, Shakeel and Sodagar who were arrested on April 30, Dawn online reported. According to Singh, the accused were booked under the sections dealing with bailable offences and “desecration of a worship place”.

Terrorists planning V-Day attacks held MOSCOW: A group of citizens from Central Asian countries was detained by Russia’s security agency, FSB, on suspicion that they were planning terror attacks ahead of upcoming Victory Day celebrations, at the behest of Syrian and Turkish terrorist leaders. “We have found a large quantity of weapons, explosives and other terrorist equipment,” the Federal Security Service said in a statement, RT reported. The security agency said the citizens of the former Soviet republics were based in Moscow and were planning to target the capital. The FSB said the detainees have made “confession statements”, and have been found to have been working “on orders from their superiors located in Syria and Turkey”.

ith Pakistani-origin Sadiq Khan likely to become London’s new mayor, his Conservative foe Zac Goldsmith is using Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name to woo Hindu and Sikh votes. Balloting was taking place in England, Scotland and Wales on May 5 to elect mayors and fill up assembly and parliamentary seats. The battle for London’s mayorship has become the most high-profile contest. All indications are that Khan, 45, a former human rights lawyer

and a Labour MP from Tooting since 2005, will emerge the winner. That will make the former bus driver’s son Europe’s most powerful Muslim politician. Khan was the transport minister in then Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s government in 2009-10. He was the first Muslim minister to attend Cabinet meetings. Married to solicitor Saadiya Ahmed, the couple have two daughters. Khan is proud of his British linkages. “I’m a Londoner, I’m European, I’m British, I’m English, I’m of Islamic faith, of Asian origin, of Pakistani heritage, a dad, a hus-

Agusta probe deepens Probe to focus on names in Italy court judgment, says Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar as Congress brings heat on BJP IANS, NEW DELHI

D

efense Minister Manohar Parrikar said this week the probe in the AgustaWestland helicopter graft case will focus on those named in the Italian court judgment. “There is an agreement that corrupt practices were involved in procurement of AgustaWestland helicopters. The previous government recognized these and put on hold the group in 2014, and the present government passed the order,” Parrikar said in the Rajya Sabha, replying to a short duration discussion on the issue. The minister said “corrupt practices” was the central matter, and it will be “unmasked” through inquiry. “Given the above background, these inquiries will necessarily focus on the role of those named in the judgment of the Italian court. It is also important for ensuring a comprehensive investigation,” Par-

rikar said. “The ministry of defense has written to both ED and CBI to take into account the contents of the judgment and conclude the investigation

expeditiously,” he said. The judgment names Congress president Sonia Gandhi, then IAF chief S.P. Tyagi, Congress leader Ahmad Patel and others.

Parrikar also said that it was “most obvious” that AgustaWestland was “favored” at every stage of the deal. The Congress has, however, stressed that the judgment does not indict anyone. A dissatisfied Congress also staged a walkout from the house after Parrikar’s reply, and Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said he was “disappointed” over the response. The multi-crore-rupee scam resurfaced last month after the names of some Congress leaders, including of party chief Sonia Gandhi, were said to have figured in a judgment by an Italian court. AgustaWestland was alleged to have paid Rs.375 crore as bribe to secure the Rs.3,700-crore contract to supply 12 VVIP choppers to the Indian Air Force. The contract for purchase of helicopters for the use of VVIPs was signed in 2010. The previous UPA government scrapped the deal over charges of kickbacks.

Modi does not have DU degree: Kejriwal IANS, NEW DELHI

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi does not have a BA degree from the Delhi University (DU) as claimed by him, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal alleged on May 5. “DU refuses to show records of Prime Minister’s degree. Why? My info - he did not do BA from DU,” the Aam Aadmi Party chief tweeted. He said there were “no records in DU” and that the purported degree of Modi published by some

newspapers was forged. “Why is DU refusing (to give) info about Prime Minister’s degree? Because he does not have it. No records in DU related to his enrolment, his degree, his marksheets and convocation,” Kejriwal wrote. Modi’s election affidavit in the 2014 general election claimed he had undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. According to the affidavit, he completed a distance education course from DU in 1978. His sub-

ject was Political Science. His election affidavits for the 2012 and 2007 Gujarat assembly polls too made the same claim. The Central Information Commission (CIC) had on April 29 directed the universities of Delhi and Gujarat to respond to all the RTI applications regarding Modi’s educational qualifications. The CIC direction followed Kejriwal’s letter demanding that information pertaining to Modi’s educational qualification be made public.

Vijay Mallya’s resignation accepted IANS, NEW DELHI

R

ajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari accepted Vijay Mallya’s resignation from the House, a day after the embattled liquor baron, accused of defaulting on a Rs.9,000-crore loan he had taken from Indian banks, decided to quit “in keeping with the highest standards of ethics” as a member of parliament. The dramatic acceptance of resignation came even as the house ethics

panel earlier recommended that the flamboyant businessman be expelled from the Rajya Sabha as his resignation letter recieved on Tuesday did not have his original signature. However, Rajya Sabha sources said Mallya sent another resignation letter to the chairman before the house could have taken the ethics panel report seeking his expulsion “with immediate effect”. “The Rajya Sabha accepts the resignation of Vijay Mallya with effect from May 4 (Wednesday),”

CBI summons Harish Rawat in graft case NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) summoned ousted Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat to Delhi for questioning in a corruption case, officials said. The summon comes after the CBI on April 29 began probing a videographed “sting operation” allegedly showing Rawat offering bribes to rebel Congress lawmakers to support him during a floor test in the 70member Uttarakhand house. Rawat has denied the allegation and called the video fake after it was released by the rebel Congress legislators. The union home ministry sent a CD of the video to the forensics laboratory in Chandigarh to examine its authenticity. A CBI source said the forensic report “confirmed” that the CD was genuine after “which Harish Rawat was asked to appear on Monday for questioning”. The hill state is without an elected government after Rawat was dismissed following a rebellion in the ruling Congress. The central government imposed President’s Rule in —IANS the state on March 27.

Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien announced in the house. The ethics panel at its meeting on Tuesday recommended Mallya’s expulsion. A panel report tabled in the house by its chairman Karan Singh said the “committee hopes that by taking such stern action, a message would reach the general public that parliament is committed to take such steps as are necessary against erring members to uphold the dignity and prestige of this great institution”. Mallya is accused of defaulting on more than Rs.9,000 crore in loans he had taken from a consortium of banks. He left India and is believed to be living in the UK. His passport was revoked after he failed to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Corruption

HAUNTS

First Family If Rajiv Gandhi was the prime suspect in the 1980s, it is his widow, Sonia, who is now in the firing line of the ruling BJP AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

I

t was the Bofors howitzer scandal which brought down the Rajiv Gandhi government in 1989. Since then, none from the dynasty has been the prime minister although the Congress has been in power. Now, when its political fortune is at its lowest ebb with its tally of Lok Sabha MPs at a humiliating 45 - a far cry from the 415 of the 543 elected seats it won in 1984 — the Congress has been hit by yet another scandal. This time, it is not howitzers, but helicopters. But the charge is the same — embezzlement of funds by Congress politicians. If Rajiv Gandhi was the prime suspect in the 1980s, it is his widow,

Sonia, who is now in the firing line of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The needle of suspicion is pointing towards her because of the reference to “Signora Sonia” as the “driving force” behind the purchase of the helicopters in a letter written by a middleman, James Christian Michel, to the India head of AgustaWestland, Peter Hulet. An Italian court has also noted that there is “reasonable belief” that the helicopter deal was not fair or above board. There is little doubt that there’s a long way to go before the Congress president or anyone else in the party is charged with incontrovertible proof against them. The case against Rajiv Gandhi, for instance, in the Bofors affair has never been conclusively settled

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi. (File photo)

notwithstanding the references in the Bofors chief Martin Ardbo’s diary to an “N”, widely believed to be Arun Nehru who was Rajiv’s ministerial colleague at the time, “Q”, probably the Italian businessman, Ottavio Quottrocchi, who was said to be close to “R” (Rajiv ?), and to an unspecified “Gandhi trustee lawyer”. But the difference between then and now is that the Congress is no longer in power, let alone be in an unassailable position as in the early years of Rajiv Gandhi’s premiership.

The Congress’s clout at the time enabled Quottrocchi to leave India while the investigative agencies looked the other way. Such dodgy manoeuvres will no longer be possible. The party is currently bereft of both the earlier nationwide political influence and the popularity of the first family which led to Rajiv Gandhi’s massive victory in 1984. Instead, the plethora of corruption cases which brought down the Manmohan Singh government in

2014 has made the Congress a byword for sleaze in public perception. The Agusta deal can be said to be a part of the series of shady transactions such as the scams relating to 2G spectrum, the Commonwealth Games, the Adarsh housing society or the coal block allocations which characterized Manmohan Singh’s tenure. In the present scenario, even if the Congress’s piggyback ride on the Left in West Bengal fetches it a few seats, the success will not bring the party much joy. In any event, as long as the names of its top leadership are not cleared of malfeasance, the Congress’s new friends are likely to maintain a safe distance from the party. It will not only be the communists who will be wary of the Congress but also Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad, especially the latter, who will remember how Rahul Gandhi was reluctant to share the stage with him in Bihar because of the Rashtriya Janata Dal leader’s conviction in the fodder scam. Now the boot is on the other foot. For the BJP, the Congress’s entanglement in yet another corruption case is a godsend as it will take much of the steam out of the Congress’s aggression in parliament. The BJP appears to have left it largely to its in-house maverick, Subramanian Swamy, to take on the Congress in both the Agusta and National Herald cases. The second litigation is about the first family’s control over the assets of a newspaper, founded by Jawaharlal Nehru, which is no longer published. The Congress’s and the dynasty’s woes suggest that a recovery is a long way off.

Impact of recent regulatory move on Make in India AMIT KAPOOR, NEW DELHI

M

anufacturing in India has not been particularly strong. This is because of a host of reasons emanating from the India’s socialist era. Prominent among these include labour laws resulting in trade unionism, licenses for regulating production activity and the like. But the performance of the sector even post that period (initiated in 1980s and culminating into the reforms of 1990s) has been far from stellar. Although manufacturing sector has grown overall, the share of manufacturing in GDP has stayed constant at around 15 percent. The choice for consumers has increased manifold, but the output of manufacturing growth has been steady. In comparison to the services sector, the manufacturing sector has been clearly a laggard. In spite of this, a large number of sub-sectors have developed and deepened the manufacturing capability like the automotive industry, pharmaceutical industry, etc. Another

Apple till date has not been able to enter India, but most likely sees India as a key market. (File photo: IANS)

prominent feature of Indian manufacturing is that still a massive portion is done by the small and medium sector enterprises. It is in this light of this context and backdrop that the recent move by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) (which awaits final

approval of the finance minister) becomes important. The move does away with the 30 percent sourcing requirement for Apple, the Cupertino based technology giant. The sourcing requirement mandates that in single brand retail 30 percent of content is to be sourced locally. The apparent

logic being given by the Indian government is that it can grant companies an exception if they are found to make state-of-the-art and cutting-edge products. Apple till date has not been able to enter India, but most likely sees India as a key market as it has a low smartphone penetration (<20

percent) and shipped roughly 1.9 million devices to India in 2015. Also, in the years ahead, India is slated to be one of the biggest markets for smartphones. Till date, resellers were selling Apple products in India. This could change if the move sees the finance minister’s approval. There are three important issues surrounding the move. First, it tries to rectify a policy problem with a specific move. The question now is how is the decision on cutting-edge products being made. Second, the move is slated to impact different stakeholders differently. Third, the move does not help the cause of making India a hub of ESDM sector. This is because it just makes India a market but not a production destination. Ideally, Apple should make a commitment to invest in India as costs are low with respect to labor (even though Apple’s business is not very laborintensive. The FM must look into all the details of what went into the move by DIPP before signing the document.

Indian woman claims lawsuit win against Wipro The judgment of the London Employment Tribunal found that the direction to sack her from its London office had come from the very top IANS, BENGALURU

S

hreya Ukil, a 40-year-old Indian woman who was formerly a senior techie at the Wipro back office in London, claimed to have won a lawsuit in a British tribunal against the IT major for sacking her on the grounds of gender discrimination, unequal pay and victimization. Wipro, however, said the tribunal upheld the dismissal as appropriate and rejected claims of adverse cultural attitude towards women in the organization. “Wipro leadership team, including its (then) chief executive T.K. Kurien, conspired to push Ukil out of her job and her role in Britain,” her lawyers Slater & Gordon said in a joint statement from London on Wednesday. The judgment of the London Employment Tribunal found that the direction (to sack her) had come from the very top and was followed through with considerable resolve. “Ukil was victimized by Wipro’s leadership for speaking up about sex discrimination, unequal pay and a culture of sexism,” the statement

Wipro, however, said the tribunal upheld the dismissal as appropriate .

asserted. Wipro, however, contradicted Ukil’s claim, and said in a statement later that “it was pleased the tribunal had upheld the dismissal of the complainant from the services of the organization as appropriate and rejected claims of adverse cultural attitude towards women in the organization”. In an e-mail response to Wipro’s statement, Ukil told IANS that she had won on her claim for equal pay,

as she did same work as her male peers in same grade and that she was paid significantly lower than her male colleagues. “The court also ruled in my favor on sex discrimination, victimization and unfair dismissal,” Ukil reiterated, adding that the verdict on her charges was published on April 18, while the verdict on equal pay was published on July 7, 2015. Sacking Ukil and her superior

Manoj Punja, 54, the company said then that they were relieved from service after an internal inquiry established that they were into a relationship but did not report about it to the company as a policy. Ukil, who was sales and market development manager for the back office operations in London, filed the lawsuit with the tribunal, claiming she was forced into an affair by Punja, a married man, who was head of its business process outsourcing (BPO) office in London. Having lost all faith, Ukil raised her final grievances with Wipro chairman Azim Premji, who assured her of a fair and impartial investigation. When she resigned from her role in September 2014 in an e-mail to Premji, her resignation was not accepted and she was fired four days later whilst still on sick leave. The tribunal found that comments made by Wipro employees, Sid Sharma and George Joseph on separate occasions reflected an “extra undercurrent of sexism in their attitudes” towards Ukil, with remarks that plainly conveyed “a sexist innuendo”.

Indian descent broker charged in stock scam NEW YORK: A stock broker of Indian descent has been charged in an alleged $131 million stock manipulation scheme after investigations by a task force set up for President Barack Obama’s war on financial crimes, federal officials announced on May 4. Pranav Patel of Tamarac, Florida, participated along with eight others in the multi-state scam “through a dizzying round of unauthorized trades” to pump up the share price of a company with no business operations, Robert L. Capers, the federal prosecutor in Brooklyn said. The 35-year-old Patel was scheduled to appear later in a federal court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for legal proceedings to bring him to Brooklyn for trial. The case involved the NASDAQ-traded stocks of ForceField Energy Inc., which claimed to be a world-wide distributor LED lighting products. The nine from four states across the US were charged with securities fraud, conspiracy, wire fraud, money laundering and making a false statement to law enforcement officials. The nine “designed an elaborate but fraudulent scheme built on lies, kickbacks and manipulated trading activity to defraud the securities markets, the investing public and their clients,” Capers said. “They took a company with essentially no business operations and little revenue and deceived the market and their clients into believing it was worth hundreds of millions of dollars.”

And she is addressing the engagement between people of different cultures and faiths via her upcoming film “Streetcar to Kolkata”. The film follows writer Fatima Shaik, who is Christian and African American, on a cinematic journey from New Orleans, the city of her birth, to Calcutta, the birthplace of the Muslim grandfather she never knew. It is a story of Christianity and Islam, America and India, New Orleans and Calcutta, said Hartley Film Foundation that supports compelling documentaries that illuminate the impact of religions. Kaul shared that her journey from India to a different culture of the US turned out to be an inspiration for her to explore the filmmaking business. “Every family has its own treasure chest of stories. A graduate of Harvard University, Kaul has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship, a New York Foundation for the Arts Artist’s Fellowship, multiple New York State Council on the Arts grants and two National Endowment for the Arts awards. The Fulbright Fellowship gave her the opportunity to research and film her latest documentary “Streetcar to Kolkata”. Kaul teaches at Columbia University in New York, where her courses include works by people of different races, cultures, religions and genders. Talking about cross-cultural themes, she said: “My documentaries tell stories that cross boundaries to explore the shifting sands of culture, race, class and belonging.” As an advice to young Indians boarding flight to the US to pursue a career in the arts, Kaul says “Keep an open mind. Olympic fever set to begin The relay will come to an end at the Olympic Games official inauguration ceremony which will take place at the Maracana Stadium on August 5 in Rio de Janeiro IANS, BRASILIA

S

ome of Brazil’s best athletes were among the first 10 people in the South American country to carry the Olympic torch, which arrived in the capital city of Brasilia from Switzerland this week, beginning its journey through the country.

SRK attends KKR match with son, showers kisses on fans KOLKATA: Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan waved and showered flying kisses to fans off the pitch as his team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) battled it out against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at the Eden Gardens here THIS WEEK. Ami Kolkata here we come... see you all at the Garden,” SRK posted on Twitter. Andre Russell came up with a magical last over to help Kolkata

Two questioned over Kerala woman’s brutal murder ERNAKULAM: Police on May 3, questioned two friends of a young poor woman brutally murdered apparently after being raped, a crime that has generated widespread anger in Kerala. The crime is being compared with the rape-cum-murder of Nirbhaya that shook the Indian capital -- and much of the country -- in December 2012. Jisha, 27, was found murdered on April 28 at her home near a canal in Perumbavoor here by her mother, a laborer. Her body was badly mutilated. There were injuries on her private parts, according to police. Police are waiting for forensic reports to know if the victim was raped and then murdered. “It is a matter of time before we

will be able to reach a conclusion,” said Inspector General of Police Mahipal Yadav, who is heading the probe team. Yadav told reporters at the scene of the crime that the two people being examined were suspects, not accused. Additional Director General of Police K. Padmakumar said police believed at this point that the crime was committed by one person. “We are awaiting the forensic and medical reports. Evidence is being gathered. A lot of people have been questioned,” he said. The two being questioned now were two of Jisha’s friends at a private hospital near here where she worked.

‘24 was destined to be made with Suriya’ Filmmaker Vikram Kumar, says the story was with him from past six years and is glad that he finally made the film with Suriya, who was destined to star in it HARICHARAN PUDIPEDDI, CHENNAI

F

ilmmaker Vikram Kumar, known for films such as 13 B and Manam, says his forthcoming Tamil timetravel thriller 24, which releases in cinemas on May 6, was destined to be made with Suriya. Although the film was initially pitched to a few heroes, it eventually went to Suriya. “Every story has its own destiny. It will only get made when the time is right and no matter how hard you try, problems will crop up. In the case of 24, I had the story with me for nearly six years and I’m glad it was finally made with Suriya, who was destined to star in it,” Vikram told IANS. He admits he couldn’t have made this film with anyone else. “When I see 24 now, I know for a fact I couldn’t have made this film with any other actor. Had it materialized with another actor, I’m sure it wouldn’t have been as good as it is now. Call it god’s grace, but I’m happy I got to work with Suriya,” he said. Although several time-travel related films have been made around the globe, Vikram assures there’s one element that makes his film unique. “I’ve always wanted to do a sci-fi film and time-travel was one of the most exciting topics I wanted to work on. However, I asked myself how 24 will be different from other sci-fi films that have come

Sudheer Babu in Telugu remake of ‘Mundasupatti’ CHENNAI: Actor Sudheer Babu, who is basking on the success of Baaghi, will next be seen in the yet-untitled Telugu remake of 2014 Tamil comedy Mundasupatti. “Sudheer has been finalized as the lead in the remake. He’s most likely to start working on this project next. The rest of the cast and crew including the director are yet to be finalized,” a source close to the actor told IANS. According to the source, this project will be an out-and-out comedy, and it’ll be set in a fictional village in the 1980s. The regular shooting is expected to start from June or July. Upon completion of this project, Sudheer will start working on a Telugu biopic on Badminton champion

P. Gopichand. “Praveen Sattaru will direct the biopic. This project will take off towards the end of the year,” the source added.

B over the years. As the story started taking shape, I came up with one element that will be unique and original which audiences will get to see in the film,” he said. “Even a 6-year old will understand my film. We’ve simplified everything but without losing intelligence. It’s important every-

body should comprehend your story and we’ve ensured that in ‘24’. “To take up this project as a producer is itself a herculean task, but Suriya also played triple roles. No matter how much I talk about Suriya’s contribution, it won’t be enough,” he said.

engali film superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee, who has been in showbiz for over three decades, plans to direct a Hindi film by next year. It will be a period drama. “Yes, I will surely love to direct a Hindi film in 2016 to 2017, and will be introducing myself as a director. It will not be a remake... It’s a film which I have done long back. It’s adapted from a novel basically,” Prosenjit told IANS. “I can’t reveal much right now but it’s a big commercial film. It was made long back, but it was not made the way I wanted it to be. It’s a historical film... It will be a period drama and I need big stars for it

and right budget,” he added. Pr o s e n j i t plans to cast actors from the Bengali film industry Prosenjit Chatterjee as well as from other parts of the country for his directorial venture. “I have my cinema knowledge, of course, and as you know, Bengal has a huge literature base and that’s our strength. I would love to say that some of the talents from my region and from the rest of the country will be seen in my film,” he said. Prosenjit, known for his performances in Chokher Bali.

Rasika Dugal very excited about Malayalam debut IANS, CHENNAI

K

nown for her work in pathbreaking films such as Kshay and Qissa, actress Rasika Dugal is stoked about the release of forthcoming Malayalam actioner Kammati Paadam in which she has worked with Dulquer Salmaan. “Although I’ve not watched the film yet, I’m still excited about it going by the experience of working on this project,” Rasika told IANS. Directed by Rajeev Ravi, the well-known cinematographer, the

film is produced by Prem Menon under the banner of Global United Media. Rasika had known Rajeev from the time she had made her acting debut in Anurag Kashyap’s “No Smoking”. “He was my senior in FTII, and he’s always been supportive of people from the institute. Post aNo Smoking’, we reconnected when we traveled to Colombo for a film festival with our films. He asked me if I’d like to work with him and I instantly agreed,” she said. For Rasika, it was important

that her role was significant to Rajeev more than herself. “I’ve always wanted to work with Rajeev, so when he asked, I didn’t have any second thoughts. I wasn’t even sure how I was going to be portrayed alongside Dulquer,” she said. However, the way things panned out surprised Rasika, in a pleasant way. “I primarily relied on my instinct while working on this project. Rajeev is a very visual person, so he likes to change a lot of things on the sets. There have been instances where a three lines scene

became three pages scene while filming. It was quite unnerving, but I enjoyed the process because the character stayed with me for long,” she said. The film, which has music by K, also stars Vinay Fort, Shine Tom Chacko and Shaun Romy. It is slat-

ed to release on May 20. Talking about working with Dulquer, she said, “I was initially wary, because I assumed he’s a star and might come with some baggage. However, the experience of working with Dulquer turned out to be very comfortable.”

Manoj Kumar gets Phalke award

Veteran actor Manoj Kumar received 47th Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the 63rd National Films Awards IANS, NEW DELHI

V

eteran film actor and director Manoj Kumar was conferred with the 47th Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the 63rd National Films Awards here. Known for featuring in films with patriotic themes, Manoj Kumar in return presented a Sai baba idol to President Pranab Mukherjee. The 78-year-old looked frail in a wheelchair, but high on spirits as he waved to the cheering crowd when he got on to the stage. Mukherjee honored the cine icon, whose career began in 1957, at Vigyan Bhavan here. After an illustrative film narrating the journey of the star in showbiz, Manoj Kumar was welcomed on the stage with a standing ovation from the guests, among them Bollywood celebrities Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Kangana Ranaut, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar and many others. Manoj Kumar then pulled out the idol and presented it to the President. Dressed in hues of saffron on his shirt and head band, the actor also touched Mukherjee’s feet in a traditional Indian gesture of paying respect.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is conferred by the government of India for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema. The award consists of a Swarn Kamal (Golden Lotus), a cash prize of Rs.10 lakh and a shawl. The honor is given on the basis of recommendations of a committee of eminent personalities set up by the government. This year, a five-member jury -- Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Salim Khan, Nitin Mukesh and Anup Jalota -- unanimously recommended Manoj Kumar for the prestigious award.

Manoj Kumar’s last big screen appearance was in the 1995 film Maidan-E-Jung. Born in July 1937, in Abbottabad, then in pre-independent India and now in Pakistan, Manoj Kumar shifted to Delhi when he was 10. After graduating from Hindu College, University of Delhi, he decided to enter the film industry. After the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965, Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri asked him to create a film based on the popular slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kissan”. The result was magnum opus.

he film, “The Man Who Knew Infinity”, based on Robert Kanigel’s book of the same name, is an inspiring biographical drama. It pays tribute to the genius mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan from Madras who made extraordinary contributions to the mathematical universe. It is a grim story of the great soul. The film covers a span of six years of Ramanujan’s life, from 1914 when he worked as an accountant in Madras till his death in 1920. Narrated from his mentor G.H. Hardy’s point of view, in a non-linear fashion, the film, encapsulates Ramanujan’s struggle from his modest upbringing in India, all the way up to Trinity College at Cambridge, where Hardy arranges for Ramanujan to work with him at Trinity, unaware that he is leaving behind his wife Janaki and an overbearing mother. Writer-director Matthew Brown’s script is fraught with numbers and miracles. Formulaic in nature, the plot, characterization and emotional manipulation is the highlight of the film. But ultimately it is about the prodigy’s love for mathematics and

The film belongs to Dev Patel. He steals the show as S. Ramanujan. He convincingly makes us believe that he really is the mathematician by being engrossed and immersing himself in numbers. He emotes effortlessly, especially when he pines for his wife, faces racial discrimination or is furious with his mentor when he is forced to present proofs for his theories. Devika Bhise is a pleasant surprise. She complements Dev as his wife Janaki. She delivers an equally robust performance, especially expressing how she pines for him during their long separation. Though this is not a love-story, their onscreen chemistry is palpable. You feel sorry for both of them.

Bomb threat charge: Sikhs want action

A

MARILLO, TX -- The Sikh Coalition filed a complaint with Texas law enforcement agencies on behalf of Daljeet Singh on April 27, demanding that criminal charges be brought against individuals who falsely accused Singh of making a bomb threat and unlawfully restrained him on a bus. Singh was a passenger on a Greyhound bus traveling through Amarillo on February 21 when he was falsely accused by a fellow passenger of making a terroristic threat. “The only crime I committed was wearing a turban, having a beard, and speaking in a different language to another brown man on a bus,” said Singh. The allegations, which were made by a fellow passenger, were completely fabricated, according to the Sikh Coalition. Singh was jailed for approximately 30 hours. During that time, local news outlets linked Singh’s name to terrorism charges, the release said. The Sikh Coalition filed a complaint in Potter County against the first passenger for knowingly filing false charges against Singh, and an additional complaint was filed against

Daljeet Singh the two other passengers who unlawfully detained him on the bus. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Potter County prosecutors’ offices cleared Singh of all criminal wrongdoing.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL. -- An April 21election recount in DuPage County turned up enough votes to place Democratic candidate Moon Khan on the ballot for recorder in November. The Indian American had filed a lawsuit against the county’s Election Commission, saying that election judges had undercounted the number of write-in votes he received in the March 15 primary. His total of 699 votes failed to satisfy the legal requirement entitling his name to be included on the November ballot. But a recount of 342 precincts turned up an additional 172 votes for Khan, said Joseph Sobecki, assistant executive director of the commission. The tally was enough to put Khan on the ballot. “This sends a strong message: Democracy works, but you have to believe in it, and you have to work hard at it,” Khan said. There were no Democratic candidates for recorder on the primary ballot, and Khan was the only registered write-in candidate. Khan, a former York Township trustee, will face incumbent Fred Bucholz, a Republican, in the November general election.

Hindu prayer soon in Rockford council BY A STAFF WRITER OCKFORD, IL -- Rockford City Council (Illinois) will have its reportedly first historic Hindu opening prayer on May 16, containing verses from world’s oldest existing scripture. Hindu statesman Rajan Zed will deliver the invocation from ancient Sanskrit scriptures before the City Council. After Sanskrit delivery, he will read the English translation of the prayer. Zed, who is the president of Universal Society of Hinduism, will recite from RigVeda, the oldest scripture of the world still in common use, besides lines from Upanishads and Bhagavad-Gita (Song of the Lord), both ancient Hindu scriptures. He plans to start and end the prayer with “Om” Reciting from Brahadaranyakopanishad, Zed plans to say what could be translated in English as: “Lead me from the unreal to the Real, Lead me from darkness to Light, and Lead me from death to Immortality.” Reciting from Bhagavad-Gita, he proposes to urge Aldermen to keep the welfare of others always in mind. Hinduism, the oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents and moksh (liberation) is its ultimate goal. There are about three million Hindus in the US. Rockford, chartered as a city in 1852, on the banks of the Rock River, is the third largest city in Illinois. It is known for Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps; Mendelssohn Club, claimed to be the oldest music club in the nation; Cheap Trick rock band; etc. Lawrence J. Morrissey is the Mayor.

NJ grandmother is stabbed to death BY A STAFF WRITER ORTH BERGEN, NJ -- A 26-yearold man who fatally stabbed his grandmother at the North Bergen home where they lived with other members of an extended family has been charged with murder. Ramila Patel, age 73, was last week found suffering from multiple stab wounds to her torso at 7 am after the township police were called to her 9th Street home “on a report of a disturbance,” Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said in a statement. She was pronounced dead about an hour later at the Jersey City Medical Center. Jaydeep Patel, her grandson, was in custody the next day after being charged with murder, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and unlawful possession of a weapon. The incident shocked neighbors. One neighbor said that Patel, a graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology, was generally happy and outgoing, and lovingly maintained an old car that belonged to his father, who died two years ago, because of fond memories it held for him. Other neighbors said Jaydeep Patel recently had verbal fights with his mother. One woman, who declined to give her name, said the grandmother had wanted them to move out because the fighting “made her life miserable.” Neighbors said the dead woman was Jaydeep Patel’s paternal grandmother. One neighbor said the mother had told her that she screamed when she found her motherin-law on the floor bleeding. Neighbors said Jaydeep Patel and his mother had a verbal argument on the day before the alleged stabbing, and that the police were briefly at the family’s home at 1316 9th Street that day. One man said Jaydeep Patel idolized his father, who was an artist known for floral still life drawings, and enjoyed talking about museums, theater, history and music. He said Jaydeep had complained about his job with an electronics company in Bergen County because he was being given more responsibility for the same pay. He said he did not know the name of the company

Vitamin D may help cut body fat in infants TORONTO: A healthy intake of vitamin D in the first year of life can build up more muscle mass and reduce body fat in toddlers, finds a new study. “We were very intrigued by the higher lean mass, the possibility that vitamin D can help infants to not only grow healthy skeletons but also healthy amounts of muscle and less fat,” said one of the researcher Hope Weiler, director of the Mary Emily Clinical Nutrition Research Unit at McGill University in Canada. The team analysed 132 infants in Quebec who were given a vitamin D3 supplement at one of four different dosages between the ages of one month and 12 months. Using body scans they assessed bone density to measure the children’s muscle and fat mass. Vitamin D supplementation is routinely recommended for babies until they can get an adequate amount

“The link between impaired balance, dependency in transfer or dressing, and depression is an important finding and may be the subject of future studies focusing on prevention or treatment of depression among people in older age,” Bostrom said, in his dissertation. The elderly with dementia or people over the age of 85 had an increased risk of death with ongoing treatment with anti-depressants. Further, the study involving 392 participants revealed that women had a higher mortality risk with anti-depressant use in comparison to men, the researchers concluded.

T NEW YORK: Children who live with a smoker or have exposure to tobacco smoke inside the home become frequently ill and are more likely to have pediatric health care visits, including sick care, say researchers. “Our findings indicate that tobacco smoke exposure has a significant impact on demand for health care services,” said lead study author Ashley Merianos from University of Cincinnati. The results revealed a total of 24 percent of the children lived with smokers. Children who live with smokers end up in the doctor’s office or hospital.

through their diet. Children who had higher stores of vitamin D in their body averaged around 450 grams less body fat at three years of age, the study found. The findings confirmed the importance of a vitamin D supplement of 400 international units per day during a baby’s first year for the development of strong bones. However, higher doses did not show any additional benefit -- at least not in terms of bone development. The study, published in the journal Pediatric Obesity, indicated a correlation between lean muscle mass and the average level of vitamin D in the body over the first three years of a child’s life. The only other factor found to make a significant difference to the children’s amount of body fat was their level of physical activity, the researchers stated.

aking at least 2-3 minutes rest between weight-lifting sets at the gym can help boost muscle growth, British researchers have found. The results suggest that guys who took longer rest periods showed two-fold increase in myofibrillar protein synthesis (MPS) -- associated with strength and muscle growth. The study highlights that short rest intervals may actually impair the processes that control muscle growth. However, with short rests of one minute, the actual muscle response is blunted. “If you’re looking for maximised muscle growth with your training programme, a slightly longer interval between sets may provide a better chance of having the muscle response you’re looking for,” said Leigh Breen from University of Birmingham in Britain.

“If you’re looking for maximized muscle growth with your training programme, a slightly longer interval between sets may provide a better chance of having the muscle response you’re looking for” The study, published in the journal Experimental Physiology, analysed 16 men who completed resistance exercises interspersed by either one minute or five minutes of rest. Researchers from the Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences in Iran, the Psychiatric University Clinics and

the University of Basel took part in the study. Muscle biopsies were obtained at 0, four, 24 and 28 hours post-exercise. Beginners starting out on weight training programmes should take sufficient rest, of at least 2-3 minutes, between weight lifting sets that can help with mus-

response to short rest intervals particularly if they have trained this way for a prolonged period and adapted to this unique metabolic stress. “Nonetheless, similar recommendations of 2-3 minutes between sets should help ensure maximal muscle growth in welltrained individuals,” Breen added.

Daily yoga reduces MS symptoms Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic progressive autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the nervous tissue, potentially resulting in movement disorders as well as faintness, depression and paresthesia

Black coffee daily can cut liver disease risk: Experts NEW DELHI: If you are a coffee lover, here is another reason to go for an extra cup. According to health experts, two-three cups of black, caffeinated coffee without sugar and a little bit or no milk can reduce the risk of liver disease - including liver cancer. People who consume more than two cups of coffee per day with preexisting liver disease have shown lower incidence of fibrosis and cirrhosis, lower Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) rates the most common type of liver cancer -- as well as decreased mortality. “Coffee is a rich source of antioxidants and the protective effects of coffee have been proposed in a variety of conditions ranging from heart disease

to stroke to Type 2 diabetes as well as Parkinson’s disease,” Dr Manav Wadhawan from Fortis Escorts Liver and Digestive Diseases Institute in the capital, told IANS. “It should be noted that other caffeinated drinks do not provide similar protection against liver disease. The component -polyphenols (CGA) -- may be responsible for the positive metabolic effects of coffee,” Wadhawan informed. Children and young people in pediatric age group should avoid the more intake of coffee as it increases the side effects of caffeine in the form of anxiety, restlessness, headache and insomnia. “400 gm of caffeine daily can be considered safe for such age group,” Wadhawan advised.

Y

oga along with aquatic exercises can have a positive influence on certain symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) like fatigue, depression and paresthesia, a significant study has found. The findings showed that these symptoms significantly improved after an eight-week programme of yoga and aquatic exercise. MS is a chronic progressive autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the nervous tissue, potentially resulting in movement disorders. Other typical symptoms of MS include physical and mental fatigue as well as faintness, depression and paresthesia such as pins and needles, itchiness and numbness. “Exercise training programmes should be considered in the future as possible complements to standard MS treatments,” the researchers wrote in a paper published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. The team analysed 54 women

with MS with an average age of 34 and were assigned to one of three groups: yoga, aquatic exercise or no exercise. Before and after the trial, patients were asked to complete a questionnaire about their symptoms. All patients continued with their existing treatment, including any medication taken to regulate the immune system. The results revealed that in comparison to the control group, fatigue, depression and paresthesia were significantly reduced in patients who took part in a threetimes weekly training programme. In the non-exercising group, the likelihood of moderate to severe depression was 35-fold higher than in the groups who had done yoga or aquatic exercise. Researchers from the Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences in Iran, the Psychiatric University Clinics and the University of Basel in Switzerland conducted the study. Exercise can have a positive influence on certain symptoms of multiple sclerosis like fatigue, depression and paresthesia.

Diluted apple juice best to treat dehydration in kids IANS, TORONTO

A

s the summer picks up the heat, kids suffering from mild gastroenteritis and dehydration should be given diluted apple juice instead of electrolyte drinks to replace fluid losses from diarrhea and vomiting, researchers say. The results showed that 17 percent children who were administered diluted apple juice experienced less treatment failure compared to 25 percent given electrolyte drinks. “The use of dilute apple juice and preferred fluids may be an appropriate alternative to electrolyte maintenance fluids in children with mild gastroenteritis and minimal dehydration,” said Stephen B Freedman from University of Calgary in Canada. The study children from age six months to five years with gastroenteritis and minimal dehydration to

receive diluted apple juice or appleflavored electrolyte maintenance solution. Among 647 randomized children, 644 completed the follow-up inspections. Only 2.5 percent children who drink apple juice/preferred fluids received intravenous rehydration. “The findings may more accurately reflect the effect rehydration fluid choice,” Freedman stated.
