A mechanical engineering graduate of IIT Kanpur, Rajvanshi earned his PhD from the University of Florida in 1979. Rajvanshi joined its faculty for two years before returning to India in 1981 to run his own rural nongovernmental organization, Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute (NARI), at Phaltan in Maharashtra. The award was presented to Rajvanshi by Cammy Abernathy, dean of the University’s College of Engineering, at the commencement convocation in Gainesville, Florida, in a glittering ceremony webcast alive via internet. “NARI has done groundbreaking work in agriculture, renewable energy and sus-

tainable development,” the university said in a statement read out during the presentation. “Rajvanshi has devoted the last 33 years to applying sophisticated science and technology to solve the problems faced by rural communities in areas of energy, water, pollution and income inequality,” the statement added. Rajvanshi’s work on rural development has won him several prestigious national and international awards as well as induction into the Solar Hall of Fame. The awards include Jamnalal Bajaj Award and the Platinum Jubilee Award of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry in India, and the Energy Globe Award of Energy Globe Foundation — a non-profit organization in Austria. MUMBAI: Spelling trouble for Bollywood actor Salman Khan, two of three witnesses in the 2002 hit-and-run case on May 6 identified him in a sessions court here. One of the witnesses said he had seen the film star alighting from his SUV on the night of September 28, 2002, after the vehicle mowed down five pavement dwellers — killing one and injuring four others — near a bakery in suburban Bandra. One of them also testified that Salman Khan was in an inebriated state and fell down while coming out of his vehicle, before running away from the site.

The second witness said he saw Salman Khan — who was present along with his sisters in court for the re-trial — “open the car door while stepping out”. However, one of the three witnesses said that while he did see the actor getting out of the car, he could not recall the door from which the film star got out. Four witnesses had escaped by the skin of their teeth after Salman Khan’s car ran over the pavement dwellers. The three witnesses who deposed before the court were Manu Khan, M. Kalim Iqbal Pathan and Muslim Shaikh. The prosecution had earlier submitted a list of 64 witnesses but will only examine a few of them during the retrial. During the earlier trial by a magistrate court, Salman was charged with causing death by negligence, which attracts a maximum imprisonment of two years. However, after 10 years into the case, the court held that he should be tried under the enhanced charge IPC section 304(2) dealing with culpable homicide not amounting to murder — and the matter was referred to the sessions court. In July 2013, the court framed charges against Salman Khan under the enhanced charge which stipulates a 10-year jail term if found guilty.

This will be the first time for Myanmar to take such security measures by mobilizing the highest number of police personnel for the most number of world leaders attending a regional summit in Myanmar, Xinhua cited local 7-Day News as quoting senior police official Soe Myaing. Police forces from Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon and Mandalay regions have been mobilized to stand by for security duties. Reports said Myanmar has tightened security at Yangon International Airport in cooperation with Interpol a week ahead of hosting the regional summit. The Interpol team deployed at the airport comprises officers from South Korea, Canada and Slovenia. They will help Myanmar airport immigration authorities to look for suspects as part of counter-terrorism activities.

Pakistani Parliament lifts YouTube ban ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s National Assembly on May 6 approved a resolution to lift a ban on video-sharing website Youtube, a media report said. Pakistan People Party’s (PPP) Shazia Marri submitted a resolution demanding the ban be lifted which was unanimously accepted by the lower house of Parliament, Dawn online reported. Marri said the ban be lifted as the website has deleted all objectionable material in question. Earlier the officials said they feared that up to 2,100 people from 300 fami-

seen as rapacious. In view of the belief that Narendra Modi will focus on development if he becomes prime minister, it is possible that the private sector is no longer an anathema as before. But it is still not certain whether his supporters make a distinction between state-driven growth via the public sector or a market-oriented approach, which, to quote Manmohan Singh, is considered “anti-public welfare”. In any case, there is an influential protectionist lobby in the saffron brotherhood, the Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM), which has already voiced its opposition to foreign investment in general, and not in the retail sector alone which has already been declared out of bounds for foreign investors by the

Although Modi has called upon the small traders, who have long constituted the BJP’s vote bank, to prepare to face the global challenge, it is unlikely that he will overturn this aspect of the party’s policy in the near future.

It is noteworthy how organizations like the SJM have crawled out of the woodwork in view of the possibility of the BJP entering the corridors of power at the centre. So have Hindu extremists like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s Pravin Togadiya with their call for segregating Hindu and Muslim localities by preventing the latter from buying property in Hindu-dominated areas. None of this is conducive to social peace. In fact, it is what the SJM and the VHP say which will interest the investors more than Modi’s assurances. But if Modi is at least formally committed to an open economy even if some in his camp are not, this cannot be said of a large section of those on the “secular” side of the divide.

Pathak, who says he is on his last leg of campaigning for Modi, is however miffed with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Despite his several letters to the BJP to make him the official campaigner of the party, he has not received any reply.

here’s something to be said about a film that takes so many risks with mainstream tastes that it automatically becomes a part of an endangered species of cinema known as noble art. They don’t make movies like these. Not any more. Not too often in the past. Several years ago, Sunil Dutt shot Yaadein with just one character on screen throughout. In Kya Dilli Kya Lahore (KDKL) there are two characters, both representational and yet so finely played out that they emerge from the morass of mutual distrust as memorable individuals. The partition has given us many memorable films. KDKL brings us a heartwarming, seriocomic parable on cross-border amity. With two outstanding actors — Vijay Raaz and Manu Rishi, this saga of soldierly soli-

darity looks at a historic twist of fate with unflinching sincerity and heartbreaking irony. The writing is lucid, literate, luminous and funny. It doesn’t falter. To go back to the beginning, post 1947, a Pakistani soldier played by Vijay Raaz strays into Indian territory and gets embroiled in a bitter-sweet verbal-physical duel with an Indian soldier. In a film like this where the dialogue between two characters sustains and nurtures the

under-nourished drama, it is acutely imperative that the two central performances and the dialogues are perfectly cooked, crisp crunchy and easily digestible. On both the counts, KDKD emerges trumps. Manu Rishi has not only written the dialogues, he has also played one of the two protagonists, the Indian soldier, if you must know. Supreme Court bans Tamil Nadu bull fights NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on May 7 banned Tamil Nadu’s centuriesold Jallikattu bull fights. A bench of Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose also asked the Union Government to amend the law on preventing cruelty to animals to bring bulls within its ambit. The court also struck down a 2011 Tamil Nadu law regulating the conduct of Jallikattu. The law provided for conducting Jallikattu from January to May in various places in Tamil Nadu to ensure the protection of not only the participants but also of the spectators. The law was enacted in the wake of a large number of deaths and injuries that took place during the sport. The ban order came as the apex court allowed an appeal by the Animal Welfare Board of India challenging a Madras High Court verdict.

Apex court allows dam height hike NEW DELHI/CHENNAI: The Supreme Court on May 7 struck down a legislation that sought to restrict the water level in Mullaperiyar dam in Kerala, a ruling welcomed in Tamil Nadu but dubbed unfortunate by Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. The apex court’s constitution bench headed by Chief Justice R.M. Lodha, while striking down the Kerala Irrigation Water Conservation Act, said the water level in the dam could be increased to 142 feet from 136 feet.

`140 cr seized in AP HYDERABAD: A whopping `1400 million in unaccounted cash has been seized during the ongoing assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Andhra Pradesh so far, officials said on May 3. The state accounts for more than 50 percent of the `2720 million seized across the country. State Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwarlal told reporters here on May 3 that the Election Commission was concerned over the growing money power in the elections. He said the number of flying squads was also increased to keep a close watch on the money and liquor flow. “As the seized liquor bottles have made in Goa, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh stickers, we will send teams to these states for further investigations,” he said. The cash and liquor were seized March 5 onwards when the poll panel announced the poll dates.

Six people were injured in a clash between YSR Congress Party and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) activists in Parachur in Prakasam district. Three police vehicles were damaged in an attack by villagers in Devagudi in Jammalamadugu of Kadapa district. A police officer was also injured in the attack. Clashes were also reported from Anantapur, Chittoor and Guntur districts. Director General of Police Prasada Rao said polling was peaceful barring minor incidents in some places. Long queues were seen since early morning at most of 40,709 polling stations in 13 districts. As many as 335 candidates are in the fray for the Lok Sabha while 2,241 contestants are in fray for assembly polls. Prominent among the contestants for Lok Sabha are cabinet ministers and Congress leaders Kishore Chandra Deo and Pallam Raju, YSR Congress honorary president Y.S. Vijayamma and former Central minister D. Purandeswari of BJP.

Kudankulam n-power plant generates 876 MW IANS, CHENNAI

he first 1,000 MW unit at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) touched a peak power generation of 876 MW on May 5, said Power System Operation Corporation Ltd. (POSCO). However, anti-nuclear power activists questioned when the unit would start commercial operations as it is more than six months since the unit was synchronized with the grid. According to POSCO, the KNPP unit reached peak power generation of 876 MW and the

average generation for the day was 810 MW. India’s atomic power plant operator Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL) is putting up two Russian nuclear power plants at Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district, around 650 km from here. The NPCIL got the nod from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) early this month to increase the KNPP first unit’s power levels above 75 percent.

10-year jail likely for food stamp fraud

braheem Maki Naif (51) of St. Louis and owner of Gravois Discount Smokes faces a 10-year jail term for redeeming $1.9 million in food stamp benefits between January 2008 and May 2012 and receiving the same in federal appropriated money and reimbursement for the food stamp sales. The police said Naif redeemed $690,198 in food stamp transactions in 2011. Also in 2011, Naif reported to the City of St. Louis the cost of goods he sold was $25,750 and that he received $80,000 in gross receipts for the sale of those goods. Food stamp fraud carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000. In his plea, Naif admitted to conducting illegal food stamp transactions and allowing customers to purchase merchandise and receive cash back for food stamp sales. Naif admitted that due to his illegal food stamp sales, he caused losses of at least $605,398 in 2011. He agreed to forfeit $30,765 and a vehicle seized from him during the investigation. Naif pled guilty to one felony count of food stamp fraud. Sentencing has been set for August 11.

Bal Vihar’s 5-km walk/run a big draw

he Bal Vihar Yoga and Health Fitness Awareness Walk/Run event was held at Millennium Park Creve Coeur, 2 Barnes West Drive, Creve Coeur, MO 63141 on April 6. The four-hour 5-km walk/run kicked off at 8 am with yoga and meditation followed by the walk at 9 am. The fFitness walk was non-competitive and all participants received a completion certificate from the president. Breakfast was also served to over 70 parents and students who took part in the program. “Each year, Bal Vihar has bene growing to include new events for families and community members to get involved with the organization” said Dr Sudhir Brahmbhatt, president of Bal Vihar, also known as Center for Indian Cultural Education. “We are pleased to add the 5-km yoga fitness walk which was the third annual event. I can definitely see the positive impact on our staff and community of living healthier lives and keeping up physical activity, whether it be running or walking. eventy-two-year-old women are the most committed voters in Chicago, according to a study of recent elections conducted by the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners. Meanwhile, in the recent low-turnout Primary Election, 17-year-olds were more likely to cast ballots than most voters in their 20s, 30s and 40s. The study compiled data from the highturnout November 2012 Presidential Election and the low-turnout March 2014 Primary. In November 2012, Chicago’s 72-year-old female voters had a turnout rate of 80.8%, 5.4 percentage points higher than the City average.

In March 2014, 72-year-old females had a turnout rate of 34.15%, more than twice the City average of 16.54%. The composite 56.19% turnout rate for 72-year-old females was the highest in the City. The study also found that in the lowturnout March 2014 Primary, first-time voters outperformed many other age groups. This year’s Primary was the first time 17-year-olds could vote in Illinois if they will turn 18 by the General Election. About 18.5% of 17-year-old female voters cast ballots, outperforming all females aged 18-53. Similarly, about 15% of 17- year-old male voters cast ballots, exceeding the rates for all males aged 18-47 in the Primary. “At this year’s Primary, turnouts were very low because there were few high-profile

contests,” said Langdon D. Neal, Chairman of the Chicago Election Board. “However, newly registered 17- and 18-year-olds were more likely to vote in March than many people their parents’ age.” The study covered all Chicago voters ages 17-100. Among women, those 62 to 77 had the highest overall participation rates. Among men, those 63 to 80 had the highest overall participation rates. The study found that women scored significantly higher in voter participation in almost every age bracket in the 2012 Presidential Election. However, in the lowturnout 2014 Primary Election, there was more parity in the turnout rates between male and female voters. The lowest participation rate was among

21-year-old males: 46.34% in the November 2012 Election and 3.28% in the recent March 2014 Primary. “This study confirms that there is a significant fall-off when voters turn 20, when they are most likely to be moving between school, new jobs and different rental situations,” Neal said. “We must make more efforts to keep up with our younger voters. We believe that the new online voter registration system coming in July will make it easier for younger voters to update their registration records.”

he Hindu Mandir of Lake County constantly organizes religious events for the human happiness, prosperity, harmony and peace. The temple makes all-out efforts to preserve Indian rituals and traditions and inculcate them in the younger generation. Under this motto, the temple organized a Maha Rudram program this year. More than 2,000 devotees of Lake and Cook Counties assembled at the Hindu Mandir for three days from May 2 to May 4 to worship Lord Shiva and have his eternal blessings and fruitful results for the whole community and mankind. The devotees were very happy for this rare opportunity given by the temple to attend such a powerful and auspicious puja of Lord Shiva and listen to the chanting of the Rudra Mantra 1,000 times (Maha Rudram). Therefore, this Yagna was performed in a perfect way by 121 Ritwiks lead by Brahmasri Yagneswara Dikshitar with good intention of purifying oneself from within and realize the manifestation of Divinity and Dharma on the earth. Sri Rudram-Chamkam which occupies a very important place in Vedic literature and in the practice of Vedic Religion was recited

very devotionally to get rid of the sins and obtain Lord Shiva’s compassion for every living creature. On the first day, a grand Devi Puja was performed with Lalita Sahasranam Archana by more than 200 women and about 500 devotees after the Yajaman Sankalpam. This puja was performed with utmost reverence to take the blessing of Ma Durga for our Maha Rudram event. The Archana was very elaborative and well planned for about three hours. Second day session started at 5:30AM with early morning sankalpam for all Homam sponsors. Shree Ganesh Pujan, and Kalasha sthapan for all the temple deities were followed by Mahanyasam, Ekadasa Rudram, Chamakam and Suktham chanting by the Ritwiks. This program went on for more than 7-8 hours and filled the temple campus with spiritual vibrations and made everyone to feel the presence of God at that moment. In the afternoon, Achidram, Aswamedham were accomplished very devotedly and eagerly. A lecture on Sandhyavandanam was very impressive and inspiring. In the temple Shrine, Group Bhanjans, Shiva Sankeertan were sung by Smt. Jayashree Venatesh and Sri Udayalur Kalyanaraman respectively.

Senate urged to okay Bill on working pregnant women

T LOUIS – Nearly 400 students and teachers from a north St. Louis high school will hold its second Urban Peace March and Rally in response to a multitude of shootings in the city this year. Northwood Academy of Law is hosting the march, which will begin at the high school at 5140 Riverview Blvd. at 9 am. It will then head north along Riverview Blvd. to W. Florissant Rd. and back to the school. Event organizers say the rally is being held to bring awareness to alternatives to crime and violence. Officials say 19 students enrolled in St. Louis Public Schools have died this year alone, several

of them because of violence. School officials say they fear the summer months will give kids too much time on their hands and ultimately result in violence. “It just seems like it’s a large group of teenagers who really don’t have anything to do so they use violence what they are calling having fun,” said Northwest sophomore Aikeen Webb. “They don’t understand that it’s affecting everyone, even the ones who aren’t doing anything, we’re being affected too.” During the event, Webb and his peers will be able to ask city leaders what they are doing about crime involving teens. PRINGFIELD (IL) – Governor Pat Quinn has urged the Illinois Senate to pass House Bill 8, which provides job protections for working pregnant women. The Bill has passed the Illinois House and recently passed out of the Illinois Senate’s Executive Committee. In a statement, the Governor praised Bill sponsors Representative Mary Flowers and Senator Toi Hutchinson “for their hard work on this important legislation”. “As we approach Mother’s Day, I urge the Illinois Senate to vote in favor of this Bill to protect Illinois’s expectant mothers. While many moms-to-be continue working long into their pregnancies, part-time and full-time employers should provide reasonable accommodations on the job. The Governor added: “This legislation will ensure all working pregnant women are guaranteed a supportive work environment without worrying about their baby’s safety. Protections under House Bill 8 will ensure healthier women and babies, and a stronger workforce across our state.”

The act helped Modi to enter fray despite being banned for life. The BCCI has contended that Modi who is under a life ban and not eligible to become even an ordinary member of the Board can not think of contesting the election of its affiliate body. The BCCI pleaded that the election be, therefore, quashed. Last week the Supreme Court had asked its observers to release the results of the elections.

In Awadhi cuisine, the food is cooked over slow fire, said a senior five star chef. “Good food is a combination of ingredients, and the time when they get added to the food that is being cooked is important. It is equally important to know whether the food needs to be cooked in medium, high or low flame, to bring out its taste,” Yogendar Pal, executive chef at Hilton Chennai, told IANS. “But any food would taste good if

it is cooked by your heart’s flame,” the senior chef at Hilton chuckled. The Awadhi cuisine is basically from the current Lucknow region in Uttar Pradesh, a region that is also known as Awadh. The aroma of spicy gosht ka arak soup (essence of lamb scented with saffron and cardamom) is delectable. According to the 42-year-old Pal, one of the key attributes of Awadhi cuisine is the slow cooking process, faithful to the Mughal influence of bringing out subtle flavors. Does Chef Yogi, as he is popularly known, get requests for ‘Yogic’ food by foreigners? He replied equally in jest, in the negative, and offered the vegetarian soup kaaley channey ka shorba

(essence of black chick peas flavored with roasted cumin and fresh coriander). Taster’s portions of appetizers also arrived at the table. The harrey masaley ka murg (half a chicken marinated in a green marinade, slow cooked); lagan ki boti (spring lamb braised in a traditional Awadhi copper utensil with warqi paratha) and galouti kebab tasted great. The small crunchy warqi parathas vanished from the plate in no time. The vegetarian appetiser’s khumb ki galouti (pan fried mushroom kebab); balai ka paneer tikka (cottage cheese marinated in a cream and carom marinade and tandoored) and chowk ki tikki (spiced

potato galette filled with green peas with tamarind and mint chutney) competed with one another for space. A product of the Institute of Hotel Management, New Delhi, Pal has worked in major hospitality groups like the Taj and the Oberoi and joined Hilton last November. As he was recounting his experiences, small portions of main

course and accompaniments arrived on the table. For the non-vegans dum ki nalli (spring lamb shanks braised in a fried onion and spice gravey); khatti macchi (fish braised in yoghurt gravy); and Awadhi speciality murgh korma and chukandar gosht (spring lamb braised with beetroot and raw mangoes) are there to be relished. Pal offers several options to vegetarians as well, including tamatar ka dulma (tomatoes filled with spiced green pea mash braised in a tomato and fennel gravy) and bharwan dum ki lauki (bottle gourd filled with cottage cheese, braised in cashew nut and saffron gravy).
