L
hit out at BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on May 6, accusing him of making false claims of being targeted because he was from a backward caste and resorting to “despicable” politics. Addressing a hurriedly convened press conference in the Uttar Pradesh capital, the former chief minister referred to Modi’s statement earlier in the day that he was a target of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s “neech rajniti” (lowlevel politics) comment because he hailed from a backward caste.

S
aying that even today South Asian Americans are targets of suspicion and violence, President Barack Obama is pushing for “commonsense immigration reform” to bring the “American dream” within their reach. President Obama on May 2 met with Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) business and faith leaders to discuss the importance of taking action to pass commonsense immigration reform, according to a White House press release issued after the meeting. The meeting coincided with the start of AAPI Heritage Month, the White House said describing it as “an opportunity to reflect upon and celebrate the many contributions that AAPIs have made to this great nation”. Those present at the meeting “represent the success of the AAPI community and the promise of the American dream — a dream that remains out of reach for many new immigrants because of our broken immigration system,” the White House said. Not enough evidence against Amit Shah: CBI NEW DELHI: The CBI has not found sufficient evidence against BJP leader Amit Shah in the killing of Ishrat Jahan in a fake gun battle case, the premier investigative agency told a special court on May 7. An application was filed earlier by Gopinath Pillai, the father of one of the three men killed along with Ishrat Jahan in a fake gun battle in Gujarat June 15, 2004. “In response to an application filed by Pillai about two months ago, the CBI said that evidence collected for the case is in the court. Amit Shah’s name has not been mentioned in the charge sheet. Now it is up to the court to decide,” said a CBI official. The agency has not given name of any political leader in the charge sheet filed in June 2013 followed by a supplementary charge sheet in February 2014. But it has charged police and intelligence bureau officers for murder of the four and criminal conspiracy, among other crimes. The CBI has charged 11 policemen, including four officers of the Intelligence Bureau, for killing the four people in the case.

he Supreme Court on May 6 quashed section 6A of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act that mandates the CBI to take prior sanction of the government before investigating an officer of the rank of joint secretary and above in corruption cases. The five-member constitution bench headed by Chief Justice R.M. Lodha said that a shield to the officers of joint secretary level and above under section 6A based was not permissible as it violates article 14 (Equality before law) of the constitution. “There is no rational basis to classify the two sets of public servants differently on the ground that one set of officers is decision-making officers and not the other set of officers,” the court said in its judgment. “We are also clearly of the view that no distinction can be made for certain class of officers specified in section 6-A who are described as decision-making officers for the purpose of inquiry/investigation into an offence under the PC (Prevention of Corruption) Act, 1988,” Chief Justice Lodha maintained. “Based on the position or status in service, no distinction can be made between public servants

Witnesses identify Salman Subrata Roy to stay in jail in 2002 accident case IANS, NEW DELHI
MUMBAI: Spelling trouble for Bollywood actor Salman Khan, two of three witnesses in the 2002 hit-and-run case on May 6 identified him in a sessions court here. One of the witnesses said he had seen the film star alighting from his SUV on the night of September 28, 2002, after the vehicle mowed down five pavement dwellers — killing one and injuring four others — near a bakery in suburban Bandra. One of them also testified that Salman Khan was in an inebriated state and fell down while coming out of his vehicle, before running away from the site.
The second witness said he saw Salman Khan — who was present along with his sisters in court for the re-trial — “open the car door while stepping out”. However, one of the three witnesses said that while he did see the actor getting out of the car, he could not recall the door from which the film star got out. Four witnesses had escaped by the skin of their teeth after Salman Khan’s car ran over the pavement dwellers. The three witnesses who deposed before the court were Manu Khan, M. Kalim Iqbal Pathan and Muslim Shaikh. The prosecution had earlier submitted a list of 64 witnesses but will only examine a few of them during the retrial. During the earlier trial by a magistrate court, Salman was charged with causing death by negligence, which attracts a maximum imprisonment of two years. However, after 10 years into the case, the court held that he should be tried under the enhanced charge IPC section 304(2) dealing with culpable homicide not amounting to murder — and the matter was referred to the sessions court. In July 2013, the court framed charges against Salman Khan under the enhanced charge which stipulates a 10-year jail term if found guilty.
T
he apex court on May 6 rejected Sahara chief Subrata Roy’s plea challenging its March 4 order sending him to judicial custody for not complying with the verdict to return investors’ money routed through Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Roy and two Sahara directors Ashok Roy Choudhary and Ravi Shankar Dubey were sent to
judicial custody for failure of Sahara Group’s companies SIRECL and SHICL to comply with the court’s order to return `240 billion collected from investors through optionally fully convertible debentures (OFCDs).
Of the sum ordered to be returned, Sahara deposited `52.10 billion with the Securities and Exchange Board of India in December 2012. Roy will continue to remain in custody as the court has asked his counsel to make a revised proposal to return investors’ money to secure his release. Holding there was “no merit” in Roy’s plea and “same is dismissed”, a bench of Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar in their judgment said: “Disobedience of orders of a court strikes at the very root of the rule of law, on which the judicial system rests. Judicial orders are bound to be obeyed at all costs.” Rejecting Roy’s contention that the two justices should recuse from hearing his plea, the court said: “Calculated psychological offensives and mind games adopted to seek recusal of judges need to be strongly repulsed. We deprecate such tactics and commend a similar approach to other courts, when they experience such behavior.”

WILL ECONOMY LOOK UP POST-ELECTIONS?
Outlook is gloomy
Large sections of the Indian political class and the academia remain defensive about the reforms two decades after they were initiated and lifted over 150 million people in India out of poverty AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI-MILAN

inance Minister P. Chidambaram’s confession that the government made a mistake by taking the foot off the accelerator of economic reforms might reflect not only the past but also the future. The reason is that the deceleration may continue even if there is a change of guard in New Delhi. For a start, large sections of the
Indian political class and the academia remain defensive about the reforms two decades after they were initiated and lifted more than 150 million people in India out of poverty. Yet, as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said, the “benefits” of an open economy “are still not widely understood among the general public. The instinctive reaction of many is to revert to a state-controlled system”. Behind this preference for statism is a distrust of the private sector, which is

seen as rapacious. In view of the belief that Narendra Modi will focus on development if he becomes prime minister, it is possible that the private sector is no longer an anathema as before. But it is still not certain whether his supporters make a distinction between state-driven growth via the public sector or a market-oriented approach, which, to quote Manmohan Singh, is considered “anti-public welfare”. In any case, there is an influential protectionist lobby in the saffron brotherhood, the Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM), which has already voiced its opposition to foreign investment in general, and not in the retail sector alone which has already been declared out of bounds for foreign investors by the
In view of the belief that Narendra Modi will focus on development if he becomes PM, it is possible that the private sector is no longer an anathema as before Bharatiya Janata Party. Although Modi has called upon the small traders, who have long constituted the BJP’s vote bank, to prepare to face the global challenge, it is unlikely that he will overturn this aspect of the party’s policy in the near future.
It is noteworthy how organizations like the SJM have crawled out of the woodwork in view of the possibility of the BJP entering the corridors of power at the centre. So have Hindu extremists like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s Pravin Togadiya with their call for segregating Hindu and Muslim localities by preventing the latter from buying property in Hindu-dominated areas. None of this is conducive to social peace. In fact, it is what the SJM and the VHP say which will interest the investors more than Modi’s assurances. But if Modi is at least formally committed to an open economy even if some in his camp are not, this cannot be said of a large section of those on the “secular” side of the divide.

ey look, there goes Modi”, people shout enthusiastically when they see a familiar face in a bazaar walkabout and waving to everyone. Onlookers run towards him to discover much to their chagrin that he is not actually the man who has in many ways taken this city by storm. Meet Abhinandan Pathak, the 48-year-old lookalike of BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, who not only bears striking resemblance to him but empathizes with him to the extent that he claims to have slipped into depression when Congress leader Imran Masood publicly said that Modi will be “hacked to pieces”. A teacher by profession, Pathak has been “untiringly” campaigning in Varanasi for Modi, who is the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from the holy city. “Working for Modiji is my duty as he is the one who can save this

country,” Pathak told IANS. In the traditional Gujarati headgear and the trademark attire of the Gujarat chief minister, the gray-
bearded Pathak can be seen on the roads of this temple town, asking the people to vote for Modi. “Nobody addresses me as Abhi-
nandan, but as Modi. Even my wife and kids call me Modi,” Pathak told IANS. No one in the BJP has asked him
to campaign, but Pathak took it on to himself to contribute in his own style by simply lending his face. Besides canvassing in Varanasi, Pathak claims to have toured many cities of Gujarat, Bihar and Uttarakhand since January. Diatribes and hate speeches against Modi deeply affect Pathak, who is a resident of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. “I went into deep depression for three days when Imran Masood threatened to hack Modi to pieces. My wife took me to a psychiatrist,” he said. Pathak said that he had founded the Manvtawadi Party in 2012, which he later merged into the BJP. “This year, I merged my party into the BJP,” he said. Pathak, who says he is on his last leg of campaigning for Modi, is however miffed with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Despite his several letters to the BJP to make him the official campaigner of the party, he has not received any reply.

Modi spins caste color Priyanka Gandhi’s ‘neech rajniti’ barb against Narendra Modi got a caste spin with Modi asking voters if being born in a low caste was a sin IANS, DOMARIYAGANJ/NEW DELHI
‘Congress will not open account in many states’
P
riyanka Gandhi’s “neech rajniti” (low-level politics) barb against Narendra Modi got a caste spin with the BJP prime ministerial candidate asking voters if being born in a low caste was a sin. The Congress accused Modi of deliberately misinterpreting facts and called him “spinmaster”. “You said ‘neech rajniti’... They are not able to come to terms with the truth, so they said it is politics of a lower class person. I cannot deny I am from a lower caste, but it is not a crime to be lower caste... I can assure the nation my politics is not low level,” Modi said at a public meeting in Uttar Pradesh’s Domariyaganj, without naming anyone. “Is it a sin to be born in a lower caste, have I done anything wrong?” he thundered, as the crowd shouted, “No” in unison. His comment came after Priyanka attacked him saying the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate had insulted her “martyred” father Rajiv Gandhi, and that the Congress booth workers in Amethi would give a befitting reply to his “low-level politics”. The Congress was quick to defend Priyanka Gandhi and said it was Modi’s habit to divert issues.
VALMIKI NAGAR (BIHAR): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi launched an attack on the Congress on May 7 by saying that the party would be unable to open its account in many states in this general election and might even lose in Gandhi family bastion Amethi. “While I am fighting to save the nation, they are trying to prevent me from coming to power,” Modi said, addressing an election rally here. He added that there will be several states where the Congress will not even open its account and that it

Modi should disclose caste: Maya LUCKNOW: BSP chief Mayawati hit out at BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on May 6, accusing him of making false claims of being targeted because he was from a backward caste and resorting to “despicable” politics. Slamming both the Congress and the Samajwadi Party for not commenting on Modi’s statement, the Bahujan Samaj Party leader said she wanted to “give a befitting reply” to the Bharatiya Janata Party leader and asked Modi to name the caste to which he belongs. She said Modi was trying to resort to casteist politics in the absence of any real wave in his party’s favor. “He is a representative of ‘neech aur ghinauni rajniti’ (low and despicable politics),” she said. Replying to Priyanka Gandhi’s “neech rajniti” (low-level politics) barb, the Gujarat chief minster said, “The government refused to distribute food grain among the poor even after the Supreme Court’s order. Grain were sold at `80 for manufacturing liquor, isn’t this neech rajniti?” Attacking the UPA government for its foreign policy, Modi said, “Our jawans are beheaded and our government treats Pakistan prime minister to chicken biryani, isn’t this neech rajniti?”

tried to reap benefits out of it. He is doing despicable politics in the garb of this issue,” the BSP leader said. Mayawati said she wanted to tell Modi that “low-level politics does not mean a particular caste”. “It means cheap kind of politics,” she said.
esponding to an attack by BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and the Left who have asked her to disclose who brought her painting for `18 million, Mamata Banerjee claimed on May 6 she makes a living by selling her books and does not take any privileges as West Bengal chief minister. “I manage my living my selling my books. But the opposition has a problem with that too,” Banerjee said in election rallies in North 24 Parganas district. She said she since has struggled a lot, she chronicled her experiences for posterity to benefit from it and recalled that the royalty of her first book was given to the victims of violence in Amta. “I do not take any privileges as the chief minister. I do not draw salary as chief minister or use government cars. Even when I am visiting districts, I pay for my own expenses,” she said. Referring to the sale of her paintings, Banerjee said the money

60 mn vote in
the second
last round
People brave sweltering heat, threats of violence to cast their vote IANS, NEW DELHI
A
mid sporadic violence mostly in Andhra Pradesh, over 60 million people voted on May 7 in 64 constituencies across seven states in a Lok Sabha battle widely tipped to usher in a new government. Balloting ranged from brisk to very heavy in all places barring Baramulla in the Kashmir Valley where the fear of separatist groups kept most people indoors, Election Commission officials said. As in the past, West Bengal recorded maximum voting — estimated at 78 percent — amid allegations by the CPI-M that the ruling Trinamool Congress had indulged in widespread vote rigging. It was an important day for Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi who visited Amethi on any polling day for the first time in a decade after BJP’s Smriti Irani and AAP’s Kumar Vishwas mounted a major challenge. At the end of polling, both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party claimed that Gandhi, who won from Amethi
both in 2004 and 2009, will certainly lose. The Congress brushed aside the claim. The Election Commission said long queues of men and women -the young and the old -- were seen at almost all constituencies since morning. Along with the general election, polling was also held Wednesday for 175 assembly seats

The balloting ranged from brisk to very heavy in all places barring Baramulla in the Kashmir Valley where the fear of separatist groups kept most people indoors Election Commission officials said in Seemandhra region, which will eventually go over to the residuary state of Andhra Pradesh. About 20 people were injured as clashes erupted between rival party activists in parts of Seemandhra, including Anantapur, Kadapa, Chittoor, Guntur and Prakasam districts. In Baramulla, the fear of separatists and Tuesday’s militant attacks kept most voters away from polling stations. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is trying to snatch the
Baramulla seat from the National Conference. But there was brisk polling in Kashmir’s other constituency Ladakh, a Buddhist dominated region. It is also the country’s largest parliamentary constituency. A total of 897 candidates fought it out in the 64 seats: Andhra Pradesh (25), Uttar Pradesh (15), Bihar (7), West Bengal (6), Uttarakhand (5), Himachal Pradesh (4) and Jammu and Kashmir (2). The opposition alleged vote rig-
ging and intimidation by activists of the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. The electoral battle was also intense in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh where the BJP and the Congress were the main contenders. Lok Sabha 2014 has become vocally bitter, with the BJP, determined to unseat the Congress, and others locked in a no-holdsbarred campaign. Even as polling continued in Bihar’s seven seats,
BJP’s prime ministerial aspirant Narendra Modi told an election rally in Valmikinagar that the Congress was on the run. Dwelling on an emotive issue, Modi denounced the Congress-led UPA government for not hitting back after Pakistani troops beheaded Indian soldiers along the Jammu and Kashmir border. It was the penultimate round on May 7 of the 10-leg Parliamentary election that began on April 7.

B
JP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi was on May 7 denied permission to hold rallies in Varanasi, even as Rahul Gandhi was allowed to hold a roadshow on May 10. The BJP sought removal of the city’s poll official, alleging partiality. It alleged the ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh had a hand in the decision to deny permission to Modi. In a letter to the Election Commission, party leader Arun Jailtey said the poll official was verbally informed on May 5 about two rallies in Rohaniya and Beniyabagh. A formal application was sent on May 6. Rohaniya is a rural area on the outskirts of Varanasi, while Beniyabagh is a popular destination for political rallies in the city. “The effort of the returning officer is to prevent Modi from

campaigning in Varanasi city,” Jaitley said, adding the poll official had cited security reasons. BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said the Uttar Pradesh government has a hand in the denial. “It must be for the first time in Indian elections that a candidate is being denied permission to hold rally in his own constituency,” Sitharaman said at a press conference. “The district administration is obeying some kind of order from the Samajwadi Party,” she said. Jaitley, in his letter, also said that 27 political workers were arrested while they were distributing pamphlets and were kept in custody for two and a half days, interfering in the party’s campaign. At a press conference in New Delhi, BJP vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the party was making a request to the Election Commission to recall Varanasi
District Magistrate Pranjal Yadav for working in a biased and prejudiced manner against Modi. A few days back, the district magistrate had also asked Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal not to campaign in certain areas, following which the party alleged the officer was not working in a neutral manner. The BJP earlier announced that the Gujarat chief minister would be spending May 8, 9 and 10 in Varanasi — the day campaigning ends. A senior district official said that while the rest of the program had the approval of the authorities, Beniyabagh was a “problem” as an NGO has been given permission for an event the same day. Ajay Rai of the Congress and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal are in the fray in Varanasi that goes to the polls on May 12.

‘Kya Dilli Kya Lahore’ cross-border message in a battle Film: ‘Kya Dilli Kya Lahore’; Cast: Vijay Raaz and Manu Rishi; Director: Vijay Raaz; Rating: ***1/2
T
here’s something to be said about a film that takes so many risks with mainstream tastes that it automatically becomes a part of an endangered species of cinema known as noble art. They don’t make movies like these. Not any more. Not too often in the past. Several years ago, Sunil Dutt shot Yaadein with just one character on screen throughout. In Kya Dilli Kya Lahore (KDKL) there are two characters, both representational and yet so finely played out that they emerge from the morass of mutual distrust as memorable individuals. The partition has given us many memorable films. KDKL brings us a heartwarming, seriocomic parable on cross-border amity. With two outstanding actors — Vijay Raaz and Manu Rishi, this saga of soldierly soli-
darity looks at a historic twist of fate with unflinching sincerity and heartbreaking irony. The writing is lucid, literate, luminous and funny. It doesn’t falter. To go back to the beginning, post 1947, a Pakistani soldier played by Vijay Raaz strays into Indian territory and gets embroiled in a bitter-sweet verbal-physical duel with an Indian soldier. In a film like this where the dialogue between two characters sustains and nurtures the
under-nourished drama, it is acutely imperative that the two central performances and the dialogues are perfectly cooked, crisp crunchy and easily digestible. On both the counts, KDKD emerges trumps. Manu Rishi has not only written the dialogues, he has also played one of the two protagonists, the Indian soldier, if you must know. And what a fine job Manu has done in both the departments. — Subhash K. Jha

EQUANNOCK TOWNSHIP (NJ) -- Dozens of people, mostly children, have been taken to hospital after being overcome by fumes at a daycare in Pequannock Township, Morris County. Officials say the fumes were coming from gas equipment being used by workers in the building on Route 23. There were at least 36 patients transported to local hospitals complaining of feeling nauseous. Two were adults that work at the daycare and 34 were children. Conditions weren’t serious or lifethreatening. They just complained they were nauseous or not feeling well. Parents had the option of having children transported, taking them to get medical attention on their own, or refusing medical attention. Officers of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are on the scene to investigate the work being done there. Pequannock buildings dept is there as well.
30 cent surcharge for taxi riders for a noble cause BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EW YORK -- Come January 2 0 1 6 , Ne w Yo rk e r s w i t h disabilities frustrated by the lack of accessible taxis in New York City will get a little relief. The Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) has voted unanimously to add a 30 cent surcharge to yellow taxis and outer borough green taxis starting New Year’s Day 2015. The surcharge will be used to make wheelchair taxis accessible, bringing the number of accessible vehicles to 7,500 by 2020 representing half of all yellow cabs. Those new taxis will become available in January 2016. Their arrival will represent the largest expansion of wheelchair cabs in the industry’s 107-year history. The rules approved earlier this week will also satisfy
a settlement with disability advocates to allow for greater access for taxi riders with disabilities. “The latest actions taken by the Taxi and Limousine Commission as a unified body represent the most significant advancement in equality for persons with disabilities in the taxi industry’s history,” said TLC Chair and CEO Meera Joshi, in her first public meeting. “It was a privilege to vote alongside my fellow commission members for this empowering and timely initiative.” Victor Calise, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, hailed the vote as a win not just for the disabled population but an important step in fulfilling Mayor De Blasio’s vision of a more equitable New York.
“The Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities applauds the TLC Commissioners for voting to make NYC cabs accessible for all,” he continued “Advocates, MOPD and TLC have worked hard and long to make this day a reality. This vote clearly puts forth Mayor de Blasio’s progressive agenda in providing services for the most vulnerable populations.” Underscoring the extra expenses required to make wheelchair taxis accessible, taxi operators who convert their cabs will be eligible for a grant to subsidize the cost. There will also be funds available on an annual basis to allow taxi operators to afford the higher maintenance costs of the vehicles. New taxi drivers who apply for their license after June 1, 2014 will have to undergo wheelchair passenger assistance training.

Mobile ticketing for LIRR, Metro North riders BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EW YORK -- Commuters already attached to their mobile devices could soon have one more reason to keep those gadgets close at hand. A new app would allow Metro North and Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) customers to buy their train tickets on their smartphones and tablets. “That’s very good. I think I’ll go for that,” commuter Colleen Davis said. And that’s exactly what the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is hoping to hear from most riders about a service which it says will be easier, faster and more convenient. In fact, the service is already up and running in several other cities. “It’s in use in Boston, where they designed it, and Long Island is about to get it in a month or so. So, we’re confident what we’re getting is a well-tested and good product,” Aaron Donovan of the MTA said. The company behind the mobile ticketing app says it’s simple: click buy ticket, choose your origin and destination, decide how to pay and confirm the payment. When you board the train, the conductor will be able to see the ticket displayed right on your screen. “This is all about taking the friction out of commuting,” Josh Robin of Masabi said. And who doesn’t like the idea of no longer having to wait in a long line to buy a ticket, or being able to avoid often cranky ticket-vending machines. “That would be good. That would be a lot better because half the time these things don’t work. This morning I was banging on it, trying to put money in it. It wouldn’t take. I had to go to the booth anyway - so this is easier,” LIRR commuter Pete Wolfinger said. Creaters of CricMax.com and Mr. Michael

WOMAN NOT GUILTY FOR MOM-IN-LAW’S MURDER: COURT BY A STAFF WRITER
A
YUBA CITY, CA- Indian American woman, who was pregnant when she was accused of killing her mother-inlaw, was found not guilty of murder by a jury who deliberated for over a day before handing down a verdict April 25. Baljinder Kaur, who was on trial for premeditated murder for the October 2012 death of her mother-in-law, Baljit Kaur, was released from custody later that day. Her whereabouts are currently unknown and her children are not presently living with her, Sutter County, Calif., Assistant District Attorney Cameron King said. Kaur’s attorney, Mani Sidhu, briefly said: “Justice has prevailed.” Evidence presented during the eight-day trial suggested that Baljinder Kaur killed Baljit Kaur in self-defense, after years of abuse by the mother-in-law and Baljinder Kaur’s husband’s family. On the stand, Baljinder testified that her mother-in-law repeatedly demanded that she abort the girl baby she was carrying. The 38-year-old woman, who gave birth while in jail, said her mother-in-law’s verbal attacks became fiercer as she refused to abort the fetus. Baljinder had one child at the time of the attack, a young girl named Tavleen. Speaking through an interpreter in court,

Baljinder Kaur
Baljinder Kaur detailed the events that occurred on October 24, 2012 (I-W, Nov. 2, 2012), the day she said she killed Baljit. Baljinder claimed the two had been arguing in the kitchen of their joint family home, when Baljit began to physically attack her by pulling her hair and punching her in the stomach, in an attempt to abort the baby. Baljinder told the jury she feared for her life and the life of her unborn child. Baljinder said she retreated to the garage, but later came back inside the house with an axe, allegedly to protect herself. Once inside, however, the confrontation started up again: Baljit reportedly punched Baljinder in the stomach repeatedly, at which point Baljinder started attacking her mother-inlaw with the axe and repeatedly hit her in the
head. Baljit Kaur died of blunt force trauma, according to the Sutter County Medical Examiner’s report. Baljinder said in court that she did not know how many times she had hit her mother-in-law and testified that she did not want to kill the 68-year-old woman. Afterwards, Baljinder said she felt good about saving her unborn baby girl’s life. She threw the bloody axe into a dumpster from where it was later recovered by the police. Baljit’s body had seven lacerations to the head and her skull was cracked. Sidhu, Baljinder’s attorney, said in court that Baljinder was a victim of repeated domestic violence. In a pretrial hearing last May, Sidhu alleged that the Punjabi culture devalues girls in favor of boys. “In this culture, sex selective abortions and murder of female infants are common and a widely-known fact. While sons ensure the continuation of the family name and wealth, daughters are perceived as burdens to their natal families and considered outsiders in their husband’s homes, valued only as potential mothers of sons and domestic laborers,” he stated. King, the prosecutor, told journalists that Sidhu made credible arguments regarding Punjabi culture, but also said Baljinder Kaur

EW BRUNSWICK — The New Brunswick Police Department has become the latest law enforcement agency to warn area residents about phone scammers posing as Internal Revenue Service employees. The police said the scammers had been calling and telling residents they owe the federal government a certain amount in unpaid taxes, and tried to obtain personal and financial information from residents so they could illegally access bank and credit card accounts. “The police department wants to remind residents that the IRS does not collect money over the phone,” a message issued by the police said, and told the people to be very careful and cautious when giving out personal and financial information. “When in doubt, do not give out your

should have been medically evaluated for antenatal depression. The prosecutor said he saw signs of depression in Baljinder’s behavior, and claimed he had asked the family and Sidhu to have her examined. Despite his request, Baljinder Kaur was not tested for depression, said King. “If she was found to be depressed, we may not have had this trial,” said King. Antenatal or prenatal depression affects one out of every 10 women in the U.S. Factors that contribute to the illness include relationship problems, stressful life incidents and a history of trauma or abuse. The police had been called to the home in 2011, following a 911 hang-up, during which Baljinder Kaur told police she had been hit on the shoulder by her brother-in-law. “It was a tragic event but truth prevailed and a strong message has been sent in our community that juries will protect victims of abuse. Her attorney, Mani Sidhu, did an exemplary job of presenting this difficult case to the jury.” “We hope that Baljinder will quickly prevail in her efforts to be given custody of two daughters that have been separated from their mother for too long,” said Shergill

Former Ocean City residents Jason Spurlock and Suzanne Adkisson, a manager and administrator at Il Mulino, are alleged to have authorized payroll checks for former employees and then depositing them into accounts they controlled, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office said. The pair took about $109,000 between 2009 and 2012. Spurlock and Adkisson were indicted on April 30 on second-degree theft by deception and conspiracy charges following an 18-month investigation. They face 5 to 10 years in prison on each charge if they are convicted.

PLAINTS AGAINST PARK FOR BARRING SIKHS FROM GOKARTS AS TALKS FAIL BY A STAFF WRITER
T
he popular Boomers! Family Entertainment Center in Livermore, Calif., discriminated against Sikhs and Muslims by barring them from riding GoKarts because of their religious head coverings, claimed the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) in complaints it filed on April 28 with the Department of Fair Employment and Housing. United Sikhs is also expected to file a complaint this week, according to Manmeet Singh, staff attorney for the organization. Last summer, a group of young Indian American Sikh cousins—Arminder Singh, 26; Gurpreet Singh, 16; Diljit Singh, 15; and Jaskirat Singh, 11—bought tickets to the theme park and were admitted, but then barred from riding the GoKarts by an employee who told the boys, “That thing on your head is not allowed.” Citing safety issues as severe as asphyxiation, the company bans any loose clothing, including scarves, hats, bandanas, earphones, doo-rags, and yarmulkes. The headwear policy, however, does permit shoulder-length hair pulled back in a scrunchie, which the park provides. “This is baseless, irrational thinking,” says Manmeet Singh. “The patka and daastar are so meticulously worn on the head, so that there is no issue of loose hair or a loose piece of cloth.” No other theme park in the US has such restrictions, asserted Singh, adding that theme parks in India–which are increasingly providing GoKarts–do not have restrictions on patkas, daastars or hijabs.
Group of Sikh Cousins
Singh said the complaints were filed after several months of negotiations with Palace Entertainment, which owns the park. “All settlement talks completely failed,” he alleged. At one point, Palace Entertainment did propose the wearing of a hoodie over the patka, but Singh said it violates religious mandates to cover the patka or daastar, although United Sikhs accepted the proposal, despite religious mandates. But negotiations broke down again when park engineers declared that the covered headwear would still posed a danger. “They made a proposal, but then retracted it so we had no choice but to file,” Singh said. CAIR has filed two complaints, one against the Boomers! in Livermore, the other against the Boomers! in Irvine, Calif. In the Livermore incident, Nasir Abdo
said he took his family to Boomers! on August 8, 2013 to celebrate Eid. Upon entering the park, Abdo was told that his son could ride the GoKarts, his youngest daughter could ride with an adult, but his oldest daughter Noorah could not ride, because she was wearing a hijab. Abdo spoke to a manager and told her that Noorah was wearing the hijab for religious reasons. The manager did not relent, according to the complaint. Abdo then asked how the park accommodated customers with long hair. The manager allegedly said that long hair must be tucked in. Abdo asked if his daughter could tuck in her hijab, but was firmly told no, with the reiteration that the park does not allow any religious headwear. He was then presented with a copy of park policy, which stated the rules for
headwear. The bottom of the statement read: “Is fashion, religious expression or your hair-style your #1 priority? That’s fine. You can do what you like with your life. You just can’t do it at our park.” A similar occurrence reportedly happened at the Irvine park, when five girls, all wearing hijabs, were told they could not ride the GoKarts. The girls had been to the park on previous occasions, and their parents noted that children on school field trips are allowed to ride the GoKarts regardless of headwear. The parents also received a copy of the park policy on headwear, which stated: “No one has the right to put others’ safety at risk and we do not have to tolerate people who tell us they don’t care about public safety.” “While safety is our priority, we ask Boomers! to approach the concern over religious headgear as any other safety concern and explore alternative accommodation solutions that will allow everyone safe access to their rides,” said Sammar Miqbel, CAIR-Los Angeles’ civil rights coordinator, in a statement. “There are larger amusement parks with far more intense rides than Boomers! and they have managed to accommodate individuals wearing religious headgear, so we ask that Boomers! follow in their footsteps.” According to Gregg Borman, senior vice president of Family Entertainment Centers at Palace Entertainment, pressure from below the GoKart can create a force strong enough to blow away the most stable of headgear. He also said that the company was working with other indoor GoKart facilities to determine Boomers! accommodation of headwear

s the dynamics of the modern family evolve, California lawmakers are pushing two Bills that require babychanging tables in men’s restrooms. The two Bills mandating businesses to grant men equal access to changing tables have cleared the California State Senate Transportation and
Housing Committee. One of the Bills proposes a changing station that is accessible to both men and women. The Bill’s sponsor said: “Traditional gender roles with women as the primary caregiver for the children are changing, and men are becoming more and more involved in the care of their young children. There are also a growing number of
same-sex households with children.” The other Bill requires changing tables in every men’s and women’s restroom in restaurants, movie theaters, shopping centers, and public facilities. The proposed Bills are a sign of progress, but they would force costly regulations on businesses and there is no certainty either will pass in the state senate.

OUTH BRUNSWICK , NJ -The police have partnered with CVS Pharmacy to stop incidents of phone scams in which a suspect claims to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and demands that a victim provide payment or be arrested. Victims are told to buy Green Dot Money Pak cards and provide the card numbers. “During a large portion of the cases, the victim is directed to a local CVS to purchase the Green Dot Money Pak cards,” the police said in a press release. The police said they met with CVS on Route 27 in Kendall Park in an attempt to increase awareness. “CVS management has educated its employees what to look for in potential victims,” the police said. CVS was able to identify victims in the Kendall Park store and stopped them from making the transactions. The store no longer advertises the sale of the cards on the counter but the cards will remain available for purchase.

‘Talks only if Russia supports election’ Ukraine’s presidential election is scheduled for May 25
Ukraine’s Acting Foreign Minister Andrii Deshchytsia
IANS, VIENNA
U
kraine would be ready for a new round of Geneva negotiations to ease tension in the country provided Russia supports its presidential election, Ukraine’s acting foreign minister Andrii Deshchytsia has said. “If Russia is ready to commit itself to supporting these elections and to eliminate this threat and eliminate its support for the extremist elements in Ukraine, we are ready to have such a round of meetings,” Andrii Deshchytsia told reporters on May 6 of the Council of Europe in Vienna with focus on the crisis in Ukraine. Ukraine’s presidential election process is the short-term priority of the country, he said, adding that the election is scheduled for May 25. The Minister made said this shortly after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said it would be “unusual” to hold a presidential election in Ukraine while the government was deploying the army against “some of its people”, Xinhua has

India deeply concerned at Ukraine crisis NEW DELHI: India on May 7 voiced deep concern at the escalating crisis in Ukraine where pro-Russian separatists are locked in a violent stand-off with the Kiev government, and called for a political and diplomatic solution to the crisis. India expressed “sincere condolences to the people of Ukraine on the recent tragic loss of lives in Odessa”,
reported. Lavrov also said the new round of international negotiation on de-escalating the tension in Ukraine should include the “opposition” on the negotiation table, an opinion rejected by Ukraine later.
the External Affairs Ministry spokesperson said in a message. “India is deeply concerned at the escalating crisis in Ukraine that is marked by an increasing number of violent incidents. India once again urges all sides to abjure violence and seek a political and diplomatic solution...,” said the statement.
At Donetsk airport, all outgoing and incoming flights have been cancelled. The suspension came after government troops launched an “anti-terror” operation against proRussia militants in Slavyansk.
Japan to deepen ties with NATO BRUSSELS: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on May 6 signed an agreement with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen to enhance the ties with the alliance, during his visit to the NATO headquarters here. The Individual Partnership and Cooperation Program (IPCP), signed by Abe and Rasmussen, aims to strengthen political dialogue and cooperation between the alliance and Japan, Xinhua quoted the NATO as saying. “It will bring our practical cooperation to a new level including in the areas of counter piracy, disaster relief and humanitarian assistance,” said the secretary general at the press confer-
ence post the meeting. The signing of the IPCP builds on a joint political declaration Abe and Rasmussen signed in Tokyo in April 2013. “Our partnership is based on shared values, a shared commitment to international peace and security and to the principles of the United Nations and international law,” said Rasmussen.
US to help Nigeria find kidnapped girls WASHINGTON: U.S. President Barack Obama on May 6 said his administration will do its best to help Nigeria find more than 200 schoolgirls who were kidnapped by an extremist group in mid-April this year. “In the short term our goal is obviously to help the international community, and the Nigerian government, as a team to do everything we can to recover these young ladies,” said the president in an interview with NBC’s Today
program on May 6, Xinhua reported. He said: “The long-term goal is to deal with groups like Boko Haram, which claimed responsibility on May 5 for the abduction of 234 teenaged schoolgirls in Nigeria’s north-eastern state of Borno and threatened to sell them as brides.” The U.S. put sanctions on the group in November last year, including denial of access to U.S. financial institutions and a freeze on its assets under U.S. jurisdiction.
SOuTH ASiA Myanmar prepares for ASEAN summit YANGON: The Myanmar police will deploy 11,000 personnel for the security of ASEAN leaders attending the 24th ASEAN Summit to be held in capital Nay Pyi Taw this weekend, media reported on May 6. This will be the first time for Myanmar to take such security measures by mobilizing the highest number of police personnel for the most number of world leaders attending a regional summit in Myanmar, Xinhua cited local 7-Day News as quoting senior police official Soe Myaing. Police forces from Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon and Mandalay regions have been mobilized to stand by for security duties. Reports said Myanmar has tightened security at Yangon International Airport in cooperation with Interpol a week ahead of hosting the regional summit. The Interpol team deployed at the airport comprises officers from South Korea, Canada and Slovenia. They will help Myanmar airport immigration authorities to look for suspects as part of counter-terrorism activities.
Pakistani Parliament lifts YouTube ban ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s National Assembly on May 6 approved a resolution to lift a ban on video-sharing website Youtube, a media report said. Pakistan People Party’s (PPP) Shazia Marri submitted a resolution demanding the ban be lifted which was unanimously accepted by the lower house of Parliament, Dawn online reported. Marri said the ban be lifted as the website has deleted all objectionable material in question. YouTube was first banned in Pakistan February 22, 2008, by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA)
Iranian Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani-Fazli
Iran-Pak agree to joint border operations ISLAMABAD: Visiting Iranian Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani-Fazli said on May 6 that Pakistan had agreed to joint operations against terrorists and drug traffickers in the border regions. Pakistan Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, however, said that security forces of both countries would carry out operations on their respective sides of the border, Xinhua reported. Speaking at a joint press conference in Islamabad after holding talks on security issues, the two Ministers agreed to coordinate on security and border issues. The relationship between the two neighboring countries has been tense in
recent months after a militant group kidnapped five Iranian guards. Iran had claimed that the group Jaishul-Adal had abducted the guards to Pakistan in February, but Pakistan said the guards had not been brought to the Pakistani side. Nisar told the news conference that there would be closer intelligence cooperation, greater security collaboration and greater sharing of information. The Iranian minister, who also met Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, said his side raised important issues to promote and expand security and economic cooperation between the two countries.
because of the number of “non-Islamic objectionable videos”. The ban was lifted on February 26, 2008, after the video sharing website removed the objectionable content from its servers. Youtube was banned for the second time in a bid to contain “blasphemous” material, but the ban was lifted after removal of the contents on May 27, 2010. The PTA blocked YouTube for the third time after the website did not remove the trailer of the film Innocence of Muslims, which, PTA claimed, ostensibly insulted Islam.
Af landslide: Search for survivors stops KABUL: Rescuers abandoned the search for survivors on May 4 after a landslide buried an Afghan village, media reports said. Authorities also revised down the death toll. Afghan officials said they thought that a maximum of about 500 people were feared dead in the landslide that engulfed the village of Hobo Bank in Hindu Kush under tonnes of rubble, Al Jazeera reported. Earlier the officials said they feared that up to 2,100 people from 300 fami-
lies were feared dead. UN authorities in Afghanistan, however, could not verify the Afghan officials’ death toll, saying 350 were confirmed dead and many more were missing. The UN said its focus was now on more than 4,000 people displaced by the disaster. According to Provincial Director of Disaster Management Department Sayyed Abdullah Homayyon Dehqan, up to 255 bodies were recovered and identified following the tragic incident in the northern province of Badakhshan.

M
illions poured into polling stations to choose their representatives from 25 Lok Sabha and 175 assembly seats in Seemandhra region of Andhra Pradesh as high turnout and sporadic clashes marked the balloting on May 7. Around 20 people were injured in clashes between activists of the YSR Congress and the TDP. Polling came to an end in two Maoist affected assembly constituencies at 4 p.m. and in eight

other constituencies at 5 p.m. In the remaining assembly constituencies, the polling will end at 6 p.m. Over 63 percent polling was recorded till 3 p.m. Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwarlal said those standing in the queues even at 6 p.m. would be allowed to cast their votes. Bhanwarlal said five unknown people

Supreme Court bans Tamil Nadu bull fights NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on May 7 banned Tamil Nadu’s centuriesold Jallikattu bull fights. A bench of Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose also asked the Union Government to amend the law on preventing cruelty to animals to bring bulls within its ambit. The court also struck down a 2011 Tamil Nadu law regulating the conduct of Jallikattu. The law provided for conducting Jallikattu from January to May in various places in Tamil Nadu to ensure the protection of not only the participants but also of the spectators. The law was enacted in the wake of a large number of deaths and injuries that took place during the sport. The ban order came as the apex court allowed an appeal by the Animal Welfare Board of India challenging a Madras High Court verdict.

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is the second biggest ally of the Oommen Chandy-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government in the state. Senior leader and Industries
Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty on May 6 said his party will strongly back any decision to close down “at least one bar” in the state. Daggers have been drawn in the Congress over the strong stand taken by Sudheeran following which the otherwise automatic annual renewal of the 752 bar licences in the state has not happened ahead of the start of the new fiscal. 418 bars were not allowed renewal of their license.

ormer Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi’s return as president of the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) was soured on May 6 by the Indian cricket board suspending the state body on charges of misconduct. The suspension came along expected lines within hours of the Supreme Court-appointed observers announcing the results of the December 19 RCA election in Jaipur. Supreme Court-appointed observers Justice (retd) N.M. Kasliwal and Justice (retd) S.P. Pathak declared Modi, who is living in selfexile in London, as the winner in a landslide. RCA, the BCCI cited a Supreme Court order and said that interim president Shivlal Yadav took the decision under the authority vested in him by the Board’s constitution. The BCCI had challenged the Rajasthan Sports Act, 2005, that had allowed Modi, a former BCCI vice-president, to contest the RCA elections again. The act helped Modi to enter fray despite being banned for life. The BCCI has contended that Modi who is under a life ban and not eligible to become even an ordinary member of the Board can not think of contesting the election of its affiliate body. The BCCI pleaded that the election be, therefore, quashed. Last week the Supreme Court had asked its observers to release the results of the elections.

Ingredients apart, the intensity of the flame also plays an important part in the Awadhi cuisine
VENKATACHARI JAGANNATHAN, CHENNAI
A
part from ingredients, it is the flame that plays an important part in imparting taste to food. In Awadhi cuisine, the food is cooked over slow fire, said a senior five star chef. “Good food is a combination of ingredients, and the time when they get added to the food that is being cooked is important. It is equally important to know whether the food needs to be cooked in medium, high or low flame, to bring out its taste,” Yogendar Pal, executive chef at Hilton Chennai, told IANS. “But any food would taste good if
it is cooked by your heart’s flame,” the senior chef at Hilton chuckled. The Awadhi cuisine is basically from the current Lucknow region in Uttar Pradesh, a region that is also known as Awadh. The aroma of spicy gosht ka arak soup (essence of lamb scented with saffron and cardamom) is delectable. According to the 42-year-old Pal, one of the key attributes of Awadhi cuisine is the slow cooking process, faithful to the Mughal influence of bringing out subtle flavors. Does Chef Yogi, as he is popularly known, get requests for ‘Yogic’ food by foreigners? He replied equally in jest, in the negative, and offered the vegetarian soup kaaley channey ka shorba
(essence of black chick peas flavored with roasted cumin and fresh coriander). Taster’s portions of appetizers also arrived at the table. The harrey masaley ka murg (half a chicken marinated in a green marinade, slow cooked); lagan ki boti (spring lamb braised in a traditional Awadhi copper utensil with warqi paratha) and galouti kebab tasted great. The small crunchy warqi parathas vanished from the plate in no time. The vegetarian appetiser’s khumb ki galouti (pan fried mushroom kebab); balai ka paneer tikka (cottage cheese marinated in a cream and carom marinade and tandoored) and chowk ki tikki (spiced
potato galette filled with green peas with tamarind and mint chutney) competed with one another for space. A product of the Institute of Hotel Management, New Delhi, Pal has worked in major hospitality groups like the Taj and the Oberoi and joined Hilton last November. As he was recounting his experiences, small portions of main
course and accompaniments arrived on the table. For the non-vegans dum ki nalli (spring lamb shanks braised in a fried onion and spice gravey); khatti macchi (fish braised in yoghurt gravy); and Awadhi speciality murgh korma and chukandar gosht (spring lamb braised with beetroot and raw mangoes) are there to be relished. Pal offers several options to vegetarians as well, including tamatar ka dulma (tomatoes filled with spiced green pea mash braised in a tomato and fennel gravy) and bharwan dum ki lauki (bottle gourd filled with cottage cheese, braised in cashew nut and saffron gravy).
