head of the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, D.C. the National Security Advisors of the US and India have discussed counter-terrorism cooperation, including against Pakistan-based groups Lashkar-e-Taeba and Jaish-eMohammed, responsible for the Mumbai and Pathankot terror attacks. The issue came up for discussion at a meeting on March 29 between India’s Ajit Doval and US NSA Susan E. Rice at the White House, according to a statement by National Security Council Spokesperson Ned Price. The two also “exchanged views on the terrorist threat posed by ISIL in the region and the importance of combating the ideology that fuels such groups,” he said.
“Additionally, they exchanged views on the prospects for commercial progress this year under USIndia civil nuclear cooperation,” Price said. Rice reiterated US support for India’s membership in the Nuclear Suppliers Group and Missile Technology Control Regime, he said.
The summit is an effort to prevent terrorists from gaining access to nuclear materials and technologies Meeting in the shadow of the Brussels and Lahore terror attacks, leaders from 50 nations including Prime Minister Narendra Modi are set to discuss how to reduce the threat posed by nuclear terrorism.
The 4th and last Nuclear Security Summit under President Barack Obama’s watch on March 31 and April 1 caps off a six-year-long effort to prevent terrorists and other nonstate actors from gaining access to nuclear materials and technologies. A senior administration official said here on March 29 that the US looked at Modi’s presence “as a chance to highlight steps that India has taken in its own nuclear security to go beyond, perhaps, some of the activities that it has done before”. “We really would like to see an even deeper bilateral cooperation with India proceed going forward out of the summit,” Laura Holgate, special assistant to the US president, told foreign media in a preview of the summit. “So I hope that that will be something that we can work on more closely going forward,” said the official.

he campaign manager for Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump was formally charged with battery on a reporter, police in Jupiter, Florida, north of Palm Beach, announced on March 29. Corey Lewandowski is facing a charge of battery for “grabbing” reporter Michelle Fields’ arm during a press conference being given by Trump on March 8 at a golf club he owns in Jupiter. Fields, 28, then a reporter for conservative website Breitbart News, claims that Lewandowski grabbed her forcefully by the arm after she had posed a question to Trump. A spokesperson for Trump said on March 29 that Lewandows-

s the news spread of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) hacking into the encrypted Apple iPhone of one of the terrorists involved in California shooting, a top US security firm has expressed fears of backdoor approach to put users’ security at hackers’ mercy. In a statement shared with IANS on March 29, US software security firm Symantec Corporation said that while it understands the concerns expressed by some members of law enforcement, the firm does not support any initiative that would intentionally weaken security technologies. According to media reports, a third party helped the FBI crack the security function without erasing contents of the iPhone used by Syed
Farook. Farook, along with his wife Tashfeen Malik, planned and executed the December 2, 2015, shooting that left 14 people killed at San Bernardino, California. “This case should never have been brought. We will continue to help
law enforcement with their investigations, as we have done all along, and we will continue to increase the security of our products as the threats and attacks on our data become more frequent and more sophisticated,” Apple said.

PM Modi talks tough on terror UN risks its relevance, says Narendra Modi as he reaches US to attend Nuclear Security Summit IANS, BRUSSELS
T
he United Nations is risking its relevance in the absence of a strong and structured response to terrorism, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has warned. In an address to Indian diaspora in Belgium this week, Modi regretted that the world had not come up with a proportionate response to terror despite the huge threat it posed to humanity. “The world has failed to understand the threat of this hideous monster,” he told the euphoric Indian crowd at the Brussels Expo here, finding fault with countries which differentiated between “good terrorism” and “bad terrorism”. Modi explained how how India had been battling terrorism for the last 40 years. “When we raised our concern, we were told it is a mere law and order problem — until 9/11 happened. “And when the earth shook beneath their feet, they began to understand what terrorism is,” he said, speaking days after terror attacks in the Belgian capital killed
Modi arrives in US for N-summit WASHINGTON: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the US to attend the fourth Nuclear Security Summit being hosted by President Barack Obama. Modi was received at the airport by US Ambassador to India Richard Verma and Indian envoy Arun K. Singh. “Shifting gears from bilateral to multilateral diplomacy. PM @narendramodi arrives late at night in Washington, D.C.,” the external affairs ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted. The Prime Minister’s Office said in a tweet that Modi, in addition to attending the Nuclear Security Summit will interact with world leaders. Leaders of 53 nations and four

international organizations will be attending the Washington summit on nuclear security. The Nuclear Security Summit process has been focusing on the global threat posed by nuclear terrorism and urgent measures required to prevent terrorists and other non-state actors from gaining access to sensitive nuclear materials and technologies. The 2016 Summit was expected to take stock of the progress of the previous Nuclear Security Summit Communiqués and work plan and outline the future agenda. The prime minister will also meet scientists from Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO).
everything about a war and how to stop it. But if you ask about terrorism, even the UN doesn’t know. The world body of such a grand stature has failed to perform its responsibility,” he said.

He said that India had been requesting the UN for years to come up with a resolution that defines “who a terrorist is and which country is a terrorist nation”. “I don’t know when this will happen but the way situations are changing, it won’t be too late when this organisation will become irrelevant.” He said India had never bowed to terrorism and will never do so and offered “deepest” condolences for the March 22 Brussels terror bombings.
He recalled the global Sufi conference held recently in New Delhi where scholars from the Muslim world denounced terrorism. He said this approach was essential to stop radicalization and a right atmosphere had to be created to end terror. He said he had spoken to many world leaders and emphasized “the need to delink religion from terror”. “No religion teaches terrorism,” he said as he wound up his busy Belgian trip. Modi has left for Washington and will later fly to Saudi Arabia.

ourteen people were killed when a flyover under construction crashed in a crowded market area here on March 31, crushing scores of unsuspecting people and vehicles, police and witnesses said. The death toll was expected to rise. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who rushed to Kolkata after canceling election rallies in West Midnapore district, said 70 others had been injured in the ghastly disaster which occurred around 12.30 p.m. A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) official put the number of injured at around 100. Hundreds of locals were the first to reach the site at Posta area in the city’s northern part to see how best they could rescue those buried in the heaps of debris before official rescue workers and police joined them. The army too deployed dozens of

medical teams and engineers. Police and military ambulances raced to the site and transported the badly injured as as well as nearly dying to hospitals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi
expressed “shock” over the tragedy. “My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives,” he tweeted. “May the injured recover at the earliest.” Home Minister Rajnath Singh
said he had spoken to NDRF Director General O.P. Singh to coordinate relief work. A police officer at the site said he saw 10 to 12 people being taken out from the debris but was not sure if
they were alive. The accident spot represented a horrific site. Body parts were strewn in the debris. Blood was splattered on the streets. “More than 100 people must have been (buried) beneath it... It is a huge loss,” the witness said. It was scheduled to be ready in 2012 but land acquisition issues delayed its completion. The implementing agency too ran into financial troubles. The state government has opened an Emergency Operations Centre, which is functioning at the state secretariat. The contact number is 1070. Another control room with number 0332145326 has also been opened. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said the incident was a clear proof of corruption in West Bengal. BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayavargiya said: “It’s an example and proof of the corruption by the Mamata government. People of state will not forgive her.”

Politicians amuse with gaffes Political leaders find social media a convenient platform to instantly propagate their views or share their thoughts. But over-enthusiasm often leads to gaffes that leave them embarrassed SIDHARTHA DUTTA, NEW DELHI
P
olitical leaders find instant social networking sites a convenient platform to instantly propagate their views or share their thoughts. But their over-enthusiasm often leads to gaffes that often acquire a life of their own, embarrassing them and their parties. Very recently, some ministers in the Narendra Modi government made a fool of themselves by tweeting ‘good wishes’ on Good Friday - a day that marks the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The distinguished group included Suresh Prabhu, Najma Heptulla, Dharmendra Pradhan and Mahesh Sharma. As Prabhu and Sharma tweeted “Happy Good Friday”, Heptulla and Pradhan tweeted “warm greetings”. Bharatiya Janata Party leader Shahnawaz Hussain also followed with “warm greetings”. Only after the prime minister tweeted “Good Friday is a day of prayer and a day to remember the noble, pious and compassionate thoughts of Jesus Christ”, the ministers realised the gaffe. They immediately deleted their tweets. A few posted posted revised ones. Prabhu’s new tweet read: “Today we commemorate the passion, suffering, death on the cross of the Jesus Christ. May this day of prayer enlighten our mind and bring peace.”
Sharma wrote: “I wish you all blessings of Good Friday as a dedication to the sacrifice of Lord Jesus Christ and to remember his noble and pious thoughts.” The revised tweet of Heptulla was: “Good Friday a day for prayers and Jesus laid his life for mankind, and then he was resurrected.” Pradhan chose to remain silent. Hussian retweeted PM’s tweet. Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju’s Facebook post earlier this month about supposed links between French seer Nos-
tradamus’ prediction 450 years ago and Modi’s rule went viral on the social media. Rijiju wrote that the much-quoted author of prophecies had predicted that between 2014 and 2026, “a man will lead India, whom initially, people will hate but after that people will love him so much that he will be engaged in changing the country’s plight and direction”. His post added: “This was predicted in 1555. A middle aged superpower administrator will bring golden age not only in India
but on the entire world. Under his leadership India will not only just become the Global Master, but many countries will also come into the shelter of India.” Rijiju’s post also had a picture of Modi with German chancellor Angela Merkel along with others. Rijiju also talked about how the 2014 Lok Sabha election seat share of “BJP (2+8+3), NDA (3+3+7), UPA (5+8) and others (1+4+8)” added up to the prophetic number ‘13’. The minister had got the numbers horribly wrong.
Doubling farmers’ income by 2022 will prove Herculean ABHISHEK WAGHMARE, NEW DELHI
A
fter adjusting for rising costs, an Indian farmer’s income effectively rose 5 percent per year over the decade (2003-2013), according to an IndiaSpend analysis of various government data. This calls into question Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s declaration of doubling their income over the next five years. “We are grateful to our farmers for being the backbone of the country's food security. We need to think beyond food security and give back to our farmers a sense of
income security,” Jaitley had said in budget in February. “Government will, therefore, reorient its interventions in the farm and non-farm sectors to double the income of the farmers by 2022.” But doubling of real incomes would be “a miracle of miracles” as it would imply a compound growth rate of 12 percent per annum, Ashok Gulati, former chairman of Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices and Professor, Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations, wrote in the Indian Express. The average monthly income from raising crops and rearing
animals increased from Rs.1,060 in 2003 to Rs.3,844 in 2013, according to the report Situational Assessment of Agricultural Households by the National Sample Survey Organization, a compounded annual income growth rate of 13.7 percent. The 2003 report considered only land-owning farmers, while the 2013 report considered all the agricultural households, including landless labourers, we will consider only incomes from cultivation and rearing animals. To double the income of farmers by 2022, in
nominal (numerical) terms-which do not take inflation into account-would require a 15 percent annual income growth rate (compounded), according to IndiaSpend estimates. So, the government would seemingly have to ensure a marginal increase in the rate of income growth-keeping business as usualfrom 13.7 percent to 15 percent per year to deliver on the promise of doubling farmer income. However, there are four hurdles: l Increasing input costs, such as seeds, fertilisers and irrigation
The BJP won 282 seats, not 283. NDA bagged 336, not 337, UPA got 60 and others got 147. The Facebook post was later removed. Tech-savvy Modi often greets his counterparts and other important personalities on their birthdays on Twitter. In one tweet, he erroneously wished Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani three months in advance. “Happy birthday ashrafghani. Praying for your long life and exceptional health and a joyful journey ahead,” Modi said on February 12. Ghani, making light of the situation, replied: “Greetings from Munich, Mr. PM. Although, my birthday is on 19th May, I’d still like to thank you for your gracious words:)” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee too committed a faux pas as she did not seem to remember that the legendary Ghazal singer Jagjit Singh had passed away in 2011. “Birthday greetings to Jagjit Singh, Zakir Hussain, Md Azharuddin. And if it is also your birthday today, let me wish you too,” Banerjee posted last month. Realizing the error, she deleted the tweet and replaced it with: “Birthday greetings Zakir Hussain, Md Azharuddin. Birthday remembrance Jagjit Singh. And if it is also your birthday today, let me wish u too.”
l irrelevance of minimum support price, which the government pays farmers when it buys their crops l Absence of market infrastructure, such as warehouses and cold storages, and l The fact that 85 percent of farmers do not benefit from insurance. Unless these issues are addressed, a farmer’s income will only double nominally. Real income in 2022, adjusted for inflation and increased expenditure, will still be close to 2016 income, according to this report by Devinder Sharma, an eminent food and trade policy analyst. Profit margins of farmers are declining because of dropping farm productivity and a rise in input costs. While income from cultivation in 2013 became 3.6 times that in 2003, input costs tripled in the same period, almost nullifying the effect of tripling income. Does it help any longer that government buys harvests?

Love spurs Egyptian man to hijack plane

A
n Egyptian man who hijacked an EgyptAir flight to Cyprus was arrested on March 29 evening, ending a five-hour drama during which most passengers were freed early on and the last of the seven passengers and crew simply escaped. Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades announced that the hijack-
er, identified as Seif El Din Mustafa, had personal motives to hijack the jet and that it was not terrorism linked. Officials said Mustafa’s action was linked to his ex-wife, who is a Greek-Cypriot and lives in Larnaca. Witnesses told Cyprus Mail newspaper that he threw a letter out of the airport in Larnaca, written in Arabic, asking that it be delivered to his former wife. Asked if the hijacker was moti-
vated by love, Anastasiades laughed and said: “Always there is a woman involved.” The Cyprus foreign ministry announced the arrest of the hijacker, who had taken charge of the Airbus 320 when it was on its way from Alexandria to Cairo saying he was armed with explosives. The plane was flown to Larnaca in southern Cyprus. Cyprus officials who had held intense negotiations with the man
said he would be interrogated at length. One Egyptian officer dubbed him “mentally unstable”. The Flight 181 carried 56 passengers — 30 Egyptians and 26 foreigners — and six crew members. Soon after it reached Cyprus, all but seven passengers and crew were let off. The foreigners on board included eight Americans and four Britons. Soon after it landed in Cyprus, the hijacker freed most of the passengers, hold-
ing back only four crew members and three passengers whose nationality was not disclosed by officials. As the negotiations continued with the man, the seven escaped — six of them simply walking out of the step ladder and the seventh hurling himself out of the cockpit window. Earlier, the hijacker was mistakenly identified as Ibrahim Samaha, also an Egyptian. Samaha, however, turned out to be an innocent passenger.
Suu Kyi: Arduous journey of a warrior for democracy tary, prevents anyone with close family ties to someone who “owe allegiance to a foreign power”. Suu Kyi’s two sons are British passport holders. Nevertheless, the 70-year-old leader has vowed to take up a role “above the president”. How that would be practiced is not clear.

ung San Suu Kyi’s journey in the battle for democracy, much of which was spent in detention, has culminated into being appointed Myanmar’s new foreign minister, though she has had made it clear that she will wield more effective power than the country’s president. Suu Kyi was sworn-in on March 30 and will hold three other portfolios in the government led by her confidant and handpicked President U Htin Kyaw. She will also be the minister in the president’s office, minister of education and minister of electricity and energy. The international icon for democracy, Suu Kyi peacefully fought the country’s oppressive military regime that put her under house arrest for 15 years, in a bid to quell her efforts to make the people of the Southeast Asian nation the real fountainhead of power. But “The Lady” — as she came to be known as — never succumbed to the ruling junta and continued her battle even when she was held incommunicado in Rangoon, now called Yangon.
Suu Kyi was sworn-in on March 30 and will hold three other portfolios in the government
Chairperson of Myanmar’s ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) Aung San Suu Kyi arrives to attend a session of Myanmar Union Parliament in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, on March 30.
Suu Kyi, inspired by Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi, was in detention in some or the other form during much of her time between 1989 and 2010. But she battled on earning herself an iconic status that made her an international symbol of peaceful resistance in the face of oppression.
She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 when the committee chairman for the award called her “an outstanding example of the power of the powerless”. And when finally power came to her, she was barred from becoming president because the country’s constitution, written by the mili-
But, with her lifelong friend and confidant sworn in as the new president, Suu Kyi may not be too far from calling the shots — even though remotely. Suu Kyi, the daughter of Myanmar’s independence hero, General Aung San, was born in 1945. Her father was assassinated during the transition period in July 1947, just six months before independence, when she was only two. She went to an elite English medium school in Burma until 1960. In that year, her mother was
appointed ambassador to India and the young Suu Kyi further studied at Delhi University before she went to Oxford, where she met her future husband, the British scholar Michael Aris. The couple had two children. She was living a quiet life with her family in the United Kingdom until 1988. She returned to her homeland when her mother fell ill, leaving behind her husband and sons to nurse her dying mother. But she found that her nation needed her more when she saw the mass slaughter of Burmese who had risen against the brutal rule of military strongman U Ne Win. She raised her voice and began a non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights. During her continuous detention, she was offered permission to visit her family in the UK. She refused. She knew if she left, she won’t be allowed to return. Her husband died in 1999 and she could not even attend his last rites. Restrictions were finally relaxed in 2011. She was allowed to travel outside Yangon and hold political rallies for the National League for Democracy (NLD).

Coding power for rural youth A young Indian-American student has begun on her journey to teach India’s rural youth computer programming technology RACHEL V. THOMAS, NEW DELHI
E
choing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to bridge the “digital divide” in the country, a young Indian-American student has begun on her journey to empower rural youth in learning computer programming technology in a small yet picturesque town in Himachal Pradesh. Through “Pi A La Code” — a project that began in 2014 — California-based Sonia Uppal is helping young talented minds at the Saraswati Niketan Senior Secondary School in a village in Kasauli learn computer programming.
“The experience of using immersive tools to build software that people loved to learn with always excited me and I decided to take computer science to the rural people in India,” Uppal told IANS in a telephonic interview from California.

casing invention, creativity and resourcefulness in the Silicon Valley. The mere sight of the cost-efficient Pi computers brightened up her mind and she initially thought of taking the Pi device to India — to The International School Bangalore (TISB) in Bengaluru where she was
Sonia Uppal’s coding course was fun, engaging and produced immediate responses with the students Born and brought up in California, she stumbled upon a $35 computer developed by Raspberry Pi — the makers of tiny and affordable computers for kids at the Bay Area Maker Faire — an exhibition show-
studying computer science during the period when her father was transferred to India. She realized that students at her school did not need this basic computer device. But what about stu-
dents in rural India, she thought, for whom this simple device can become a useful learning tool? Thus, the “Pi A La Code” idea took shape. “I realized it would be much useful if I take this Pi device to schools in villages which will have much more impact,” Sonia told IANS. In the meantime, she raised money to buy 10 Raspberry Pi teaching sets. She first taught herself Python — a widely used highlevel, dynamic computer programming language while being selected as a Stanford SHE++ fellow — a social enterprise that empowers women to make their mark in the technology industry. Uppal got the necessary permis-
sion to teach computer science at Saraswati Niketan Senior Secondary School. With her broken Hindi, she started to teach computers and the basics of Python to Class 10 and 11 students. “I thought there would be language and other barriers, but besides internet connectivity problems, we didn’t have any other major issues,” Uppal added. Her course was fun, engaging and produced immediate responses with the students. Following the 10-day pilot run in 2014, Uppal returned to the US but continued teaching the students over Skype for a whole year. She now wants to extend the “Pi a La Code” project beyond Kasauli.

But the carnage has brought together Indians of all hues living in the country. And those who survived the twin explosions at the Zaventem Airport departure lounge, with or without injuries, feel their lives have changed forever, AndréPierre Rego said. West Indies stun India WT20: Chased a target of 194, will now face England in the final at the Eden Gardens on April 3 IANS, MUMBAI
BRIEF SCORES:
S
tar batsmen Lendl Simmons smashed an unbeaten 83 alongside Johnson Charles’s 52 as a spirited West Indian side chased down a challenging total to outclass India by seven wickets in the second semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium here on March 31 to enter the final of the World Twenty20 cricket tournament. Batting first, India posted a competitive total of 192/2 in 20 overs, thanks to Virat Kohli’s 89. In reply, a brave Windies side chased down the total posting 196/3 in 19.4 overs, thanks to Simmons’ 51-ball 83 and Charles’ 36-ball 52. West Indies will now face England, who earlier beat New Zealand in the first semis on March 30, in the final at the Eden Gardens on April 3. Chasing a challenging target of 194, West Indies got off to a worst possible start losing hard-hitting opener Chris Gayle (5) in the second over. Young pacer Jasprit Bumrah cleaned the left-handed batsman to have West Indies at 6/1. As his opening partner Johnson Charles and incoming batsman

Marlon Samuels (8) were looking to build a partnership after the first wicket, veteran Indian pacer Ashish Nehra struck in the third over to send Samuels back to the pavilion and leave the Windies struggling at 19/2. But next up, Charles and Simmons used their experience to good effect and score at a good pace to bring up 50-run partnership for the
England beat New Zealand to enter World T20 final NEW DELHI: England produced a dominant performance to outclass New Zealand by seven wickets in their World Twenty20 semi-final at the Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium here on Wednesday evening. Needing 154 runs for Sunday’s title clash, England overhauled the target in 17.1 overs. Opener Jason Roy played a starring role with the bat for England, plundering 78 runs off 44 balls. The 25-year-old right-hander hit 11 boundaries and a couple of sixes during his innings. In the final, they will meet West Indies. New Zealand were the only unbeaten team in the group stage and were expected to put up a strong fight. But England were far superior with both bat and ball on a pitch which was not too easy to bat on. The former winners were boosted by a quick opening partnership of 82 runs in 50 deliveries between Roy and Alex Hales (20). Hales departed when he mistimed a Mitchell Santner delivery into the hands of Colin Munro at long-on, but the early momentum kept England in good stead.
third wicket in just 34 balls and help team post 84/2 in 10 overs. But Charles, soon after he brought up his third T20I halfcentury in just 30 balls was sent back to the pavilion by none other than skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s surprise package bowler Kohli. The 97-run partnership for the third wicket was finally broken which helped India make a come-
Virat Kohli - one who makes steep run-chases look ridiculously easy IANS, KOLKATA
T Leg-spinner Inderbir Singh Sodhi gave the Kiwi fans a glimmer of hope by sending back Roy and England captain Eoin Morgan off consecutive deliveries in the 13th over. But that did not prove to be enough to carry New Zealand through. Jos Buttler brought up the winning runs and underlined England’s dominance in spectacular fashion by pulling a Santner delivery into the stands beyond the midwicket fence. Sodhi registered figures of 4/42 in his four overs, while Santner was the only other Kiwi bowler to claim wicket.
back into the game. Set batsman Simmons, who was caught twice off two balls, eventually brought his fifty up in just 37 balls to keep Windies alive in the game. From there on, Andre Russell (43 not out off 20 balls) and Simmons remained unbeaten to steer their team to a triumph. Earlier put into bat, openers Rohit Sharma (43) and Ajinkya
Rahane (40) got India off to a flying start scoring 55 runs without losing a wicket in the powerplay. But as Rohit was cruising after striking three boundaries and three sixes, leg-spinner Badree brought the much-needed breakthrough. Incoming in-form batsman Kohli along with Rahane played sensibly, stealing quick singles, twos, and a couple of boundaries to keep the scoreboard ticking and help team reach 86/1 in 10 overs but Russell struck in the 16th over to dismiss Rahane and have India at 128/2. Next up, Dhoni (15 not out) promoted himself up the batting order and gave good support to Kohli as the duo piled on some useful runs and thus help the team post a competitive total.
here was a time when temperamental and behavioral issues often snatched the spotlight away from his undoubted talent. But years on, the icecool temperament of Virat Kohli in pressure-cooker situations is not only consistently winning matches for India, but also provoking comparisons with cricket’s all-time greats. The masterclass batsman is making the most difficult of run chases look simple. He remains unfazed if wickets fall in a heap at the other end amid a mounting asking rate. Trust him to steer his side home at the end. With his conventional cricketing shots and tattooed hands guiding the ball slowly but surely, Kohli has already emerged as a phenomenon, a part of cricketing folklore in India. In the latest instance where he got a step closer to perfecting the art of a run hunt, Kohli pulled off a brilliant win against Australia to
pilot his side to the World Twenty20 semi-final. India needed to overhaul the visitors’ challenging 160 in a virtual quarter-final of the World T20. With the other batsmen struggling at the other end, Kohli ran hard between the wickets, converting the singles into twos and pounced upon the loose balls w i t h aplomb. By the time skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit the winning runs, Kohli was unconquered with a fairy tale 51-ball 82. Retired Australian left-arm pacer Mitchell Johnson, who had questioned Kohli’s big match temperament on
Twitter before the highvoltage game, couldn’t but laud his efforts. The great Australian legspinner Shane Warne tweeted that Kohli’s innings reminded him of a knock from Sachin Tendulkar. A few days back at Eden Gardens against Pakistan it was Kohli again who proved to be a messiah after a stutter upfront. Anchoring a brilliant chase, Kohli stayed put on 55 till the end of the innings with Dhoni again hitting the winning run. “Not the first time I have seen Virat bat like that. I have seen him evolve as a player. He has kept improving his game,” Dhoni said after the win against Australia. The flamboyant Indian vicecaptain came to the forefront after the Under-19 World Cup in 2008 where he was instrumental in India’s triumph.

T
he body of Infosys employee Raghavendran Ganesan who died in the terrorist attack in Brussels last week arrived in Chennai on March 29. The body was taken to his relatives house in a city suburb for performance of last rites. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa and DMK president M.Karunanidhi expressed their grief and condolences to his family. Ganesan, 30, was travelling on the metro train on March 22 when a bomb went off — part of series of blasts that rocked Belgium’s capital. The body was brought to Abu Dhabi from Amsterdam and from there to Chennai.
Sun Pharma acquires 14 drug brands from Novartis in Japan CHENNAI: In a $293 million cash deal India’s Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. has agreed to buy 14 established prescription brands from Novartis AG and Novartis Pharma AG in Japan, the Indian company said. In a statement issued on March 29 the company said that a whollyowned subsidiary of Sun Pharma will acquire the portfolio consisting of 14 established prescription brands from Novartis for a cash consideration of $293 million. “These brands have combined annualized revenues of approximately $160 million and address medical conditions across several therapeutic areas,” the company said. “Under the terms of the agreements, Novartis will continue to distribute these brands, for a certain period, pending transfer of all marketing authorizations to Sun Pharma’s subsidiary.” The acquired brands will be marketed by a reliable and established local marketing partner under the Sun Pharma label. The partner will also be responsible for distribution of the brands. “Japan is a market of strategic interest for us. This acquisition marks Sun Pharma’s foray into the Japanese prescription market and provides us an opportunity to build a larger product portfolio in the future,” Dilip Shanghvi, managing director, Sun Pharma was quoted as saying in the statement. As per the December-2015 IMS Data, the size of the Japanese pharmaceutical market was estimated at $73 billion, accounting for over seven percent of the $1 trillion global pharmaceutical market.
Rescue operations underway after a blast rocked the Maalbeek metro station, the third explosion to take place in Brussels, Belgium on March 22.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Vatican and the FBI are among those working hard to rescue Catholic priest Tom Uzhunnallil from Kerala who is currently in the custody of the Islamic State terrorist group in Yemen, an official said last week. A massive joint operation has been launched, with officials coordinating from various places, to see that the priest is rescued, an official who did not wish to be named told IANS. “The Vatican, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Catholic
church’s working groups in Jordan and Abu Dhabi, besides Indian Embassy officials in Djibouti along with Indians based in Yemen are all working hard to see that the priest is rescued,” the official said. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted that they were trying to rescue Uzhunnallil. The social media and many media houses had disseminated news on the crucifixion of Uzhunnallil by IS terrorists on Good Friday, March 25, after they abducted him from a home for the elderly in Aden, Yemen.
Mumbai triple blasts: 10 guilty, 3 acquitted IANS, MUMBAI
A
Special POTA Court on March 29 held 10 people guilty in connection with the triple bomb blasts in Mumbai between December 2002 and March 2003 that killed at least 12 people and injured 139 others. Acquitting three other accused, POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act) Special Judge P.R. Deshmukh posted the pronouncement of the quantum of sentence for the convicts to Wednesday. Those convicted include a former general secretary of the banned outfit, Students Islamic
Movement of India (SIMI). The first blast occurred near McDonald’s eatery in Mumbai Central Terminus on December 6, 2002, another in a Vile Parle market on January 27, 2003, and the third in a crowded ladies first class compartment of a suburban train near Mulund on March 13, 2003. The prosecution said the accused, mostly members of SIMI, wanted to avenge the razing of the Babri Mosque in Ayodhya in 1992 and the communal riots in Gujarat in 2002. Convicted former SIMI general secretary Saquib Nachan was described by police as the “master-
mind” of the triple blasts. Nine others found guilty are Ateef Nasir Mulla, Hasib Zubeir Mulla, Gulam Khotal, Mohammed Kamil, Farhan Khot, Noor M. Malik, Dr. Wahid Ansari, Muzammil Ansari and Anwar Ali Khan. Haroon Lohar, Nadeem Paloba and Adnan Mulla were acquitted by the court for lack of sufficient
evidence against them. The prosecution contended that Nachan, along with Pakistani Faisal Khan - linked to terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba - carried out the blasts along with 23 other accused. Of the total 25 accused listed by police, a majority were nabbed in 2003, five died during the trial and five are still absconding.
Headley videographed Indian army headquarter! IANS, MUMBAI
P
akistani-American terroristturned-approver David Coleman Headley on Saturday said he recced the Indian Army Headquarter in New Delhi in March 2009 after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. The stunning reply came in response to a specific question posed during his cross-examination by lawyer Abdul Wahab Khan, whether he (Headley) had recced the Vice-President of India’s house in New Delhi. Denying that he surveyed the VIP residence, Headley revealed that he had recced and videographed the entire road between the Sena Bhawan — the Indian
Army Hq - till the National Defense College (NDC), with the Vice-President’s House falling somewhere midway. On February 12, during his examination-in-chief by Special
Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, Headley had admitted that he visited the NDC campus once in 2007 at the instance of his Lashkar-e-Taiba handler, Sajid Mir, since the terror group Al-
Qaeda felt it was “a good, highvalue target”. On February 13, Headley revealed how, post-26/11, he had surveyed the NDC, Chabad Houses in Goa, Pushkar and Pune, besides the Indian Army’s Southern Command HQ in Pune (March 16-17, 2009) in an attempt by the Pakistan spy agency ISI to infiltrate the military establishment, recruit army officers and get ‘classified information’ from them. On March 26, Headley revealed and elaborated about the survey and videography conducted of the entire high security route between Sena Bhavan and NDC, with the Vice-President’s house in-between, in the national capital.

ctor Sharad Kelkar, who makes his Telugu film debut with forthcoming actioner “Sardaar Gabbar Singh”, said the film’s lead actor Pawan Kalyan finalized him even before he auditioned for the role. “I was approached by producer Sharrath Marar, and was called for a screen test. However, even before I auditioned for the role, Pawan sir knew he had found his villain. In his mind, he had finalized me even before I was officially signed for
Three National Awards for ‘Visaaranai’ CHENNAI: Actor Dhanush-produced Tamil drama Visaaranai, which bagged three National Films Awards on March 28, has given the star triple the joy and the encourageDhanush ment to back more such films. “When it comes to some films, you know they will be special right from the beginning. Visaaranai was one such film. Three awards for it means triple the joy for me and encouragement to support more such efforts,” said Dhanush in a statement. National Award-winning filmmaker Vetrimaaran’s Visaaranai won the Best Tamil Film, Best Supporting Actor and Best Editing awards.
the role. I think he has a great eye for talent,” Sharad, who plays the antagonist in the film, told IANS. Pawan’s faith in Sharad boosted his morale. “When I started working with him, I could feel how much confidence he had in me. And when you get such vibes, it boosts your confidence and that’s exactly what happened in my case. I couldn’t have asked for a better debut,” he said. Known for his work in television and films such as Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela and Rocky
Handsome, Sharad plays an evil landlord in K.S. Ravindra-directed Sardaar Gabbar Singh. “There’s nothing more I want to add about my role, because most of it was already shown in the trailer. What audiences will see in the film is just an extension of it. How many debutants get so prominently noticed in a film’s trailer,” he asked, adding that he has been flooded with offers since the release of the trailer earlier this month. It was a treat to work with Pawan Kalyan, recalls Sharad, who
is swooned by the star’s humility. “He’s probably the best human being I’ve come across in the industry. Once, when I sprained by back in an action sequence, and Pawan sir iced my back. I felt so embarrassed but at the same time was touched by his gesture. Rarely do we find stars to be so friendly and compassionate,” said Sharad, who was awed by the scale
of the film. “When I joined the sets in Maharashtra, I was stunned by the size of the team. I’ve worked on Hindi projects with nearly 200-300 crew members. Here, there were around 1,000 people working tirelessly, and it made realize the scale of this project,” he said, adding that he also found work in Telugu filmdom to be a lot more organized.
‘Ennul Aayiram’ will break myths: Maha IANS, CHENNAI
F
orthcoming Tamil thriller “Ennul Aayiram” features a host of newcomers and its lead actor Maha, son of veteran Tamil actor Delhi Ganesh, says the film will break myths usually associated with a project featuring first-timers. “Just three minutes into the film, I can say confidently that audiences won’t find this to be the work of a team of newcomers. The way the story is treated and the natural performances of the actors make this film a cut above the rest,” Maha, who is getting launched through the film, told IANS. “A film starring newcomers is usually looked down upon and never given its due, even if it deserves it. We are hopeful that our film will change
that mentality,” he said. Directed by Kishore Kumar, a former associate of director A.L. Vijay, the film is about the journey of a 25-year old and the various problems he encounters.
“It’s a story that every youngster will easily relate to. I couldn’t have asked for a better debut, because this is a story with a lot of scope for performance and I saw it as an opportunity to prove myself,” he
said, adding that he was under tremendous pressure to be launched by his father. “Since this was our home production, I was under a lot of pressure, more so because of the responsibilities that came with the project,” he said, and added that it was never predetermined that his father will turn producer with the project. “Nobody was willing to launch my son,” said Delhi Ganesh, who was turned down by a very popular producer. “I remember approaching a leading producer, who was very happy to see me. When I told him I’d like to launch my son, he showed no sign of interest to even continue the conversation, and it eventually made me realize that I have to back my son,” he said.
‘Thozha’: Perfect concoction of bromance, drama and fun
E
verything about director Vamshi’s Thozha, an adaptation of the French drama, The Intouchables, is instantly likable, entertaining and partly moving. However, “Thozha” breaks that myth with an endearing tale of bromance, fun and drama. A wonderful adaptation of the French film, Vamshi cracks the art of localizing foreign content comfortably, giving us a film we can sit back and enjoy. The plot revolves around a physically challenged millionaire, played by Nagarjuna, confined to a wheel-

Both Nagarjuna and Karthi share amazing camaraderie and make every scene featuring them a

They bonded like brothers and one could see the transformation in their relationship when Karthi asks Nagarjuna if he can call him ‘anna’ (brother). It changes from an employer-employee relationship to a brotherly relationship, and the way it’s portrayed is heartwarming, almost leaving us teary-eyed on several occasions. Thozha crackles with life, friendship and fun. It’s a wonderful adaptation of the original, and one that, we hope, paves the way for many more.

Southern magnum opus “Baahubali: The Beginning” was named Best Feature Film, while the Best Actor and Best Actors awards were taken by Hindi film stars Amitabh Bachchan and Kangana Ranaut, leading many to question why regional cinema and talent was sidelined. Twitter was abuzz with users commenting and questioning the credibility of the awards, the process of which is coordinated by the Directorate of Film Festivals. “According to the National Awards, only people associated with Hindi cinema need recognition. Regional cinema doesn’t matter,” one user shared, while another wrote: “And how come all of the major winners are from Bolly-

The narration begins with Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck), the masked vigilante of Gotham city, travelling to Metropolis to not only take down Gotham’s villains, but also preparing himself to take on Superman. This is a goal shared by Lex Luthor, the owner of Lex Corp, who detests Superman, for reasons unknown and uses Batman as his instrument to force them to fight one another to death. Kangana outstanding but wish Deepika had won: Bhansali
F
ilmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Monday said Kangana Ranaut, who on March 28 won the National Award for best actress for “Tanu Weds Manu Returns”, is an “outstanding actress”, but he would have liked Deepika Padukone to win the award for “Bajirao Mastani”. “Kangana is an outstanding actress but deep in my heart, I wished Deepika or Priyanka had won. Deepika’s performance was splendid and Priyanka was fantastic too,” he said at a press conference. “However, as the jury thought Kangana was the better choice, I agree she has done a fabulous job in ‘Tanu Weds Manu returns’. I am very happy for Kangana but as a director-producer, I wanted Priyanka or Deepika to win,” said Bhansali, who won the best director award for “Bajirao Mastani”. Asked about working with Kangana in future, the “Devdas” director said: “I can’t talk about the future. It depends on planning.”

ctor Arjun Kapoor, who believes that cinema reflects what happens in the society, says his new movie “Ki & Ka” is not aimed at delivering a message but he feels it could start a discussion on the concept of house husbands. “When we started with this film, we did not think of this as a documentary or we want to get a revolution... Cinema is not enough to bring that. Cinema shows what happens in a society. If there are little discussions that start happening on house husbands, then we will believe that something is happening,” Arjun told reporters, while promoting the film here on Monday. “Men, who share a helping hand at home feel embarrassed (to talk about it)... At least with this film, a discussion would start. But we have not made it for delivering a message, this is totally an entertainment based film,” he added.

However, I feel playing a glamorous role is risky for me,” she said. “The teaser has crossed more than two million views on YouTube with just two days of hitting the social media. Moreover, we are not promoting the teaser; the response is spontaneous which is amazing. Organic hits are tough to get,” Richa added.

Sonia Karla, Madan Kulkarni, Shebani Kulkarni, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar, Jaswinder Singh & Karl Karla
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO (IL) -- Dhrishti presented “Kaifi aur Main” on March 25 at Meadows Club--the newest concert arena well known for the state-ofthe art acoustics in Chicago. The event was a theatrical and musical tribute to Kaifi Azmi’s poetry and his unparalleled contribution to Indian cinema. It was attended by hundreds of sophisticated poetry-lovers representing different sections of the South Asian community in Chicago. “Kaifi Aur Main” is a celebration of Kaifi’s life and works seen through the eyes of his wife, Shaukat Kaifi, noted theatre and film actress, which was brought to life by his daughter, Shabana Azmi, the eminent actress, and his son-in-law, Javed Akhtar, the renowned poet, script writer and parliamentarian. The sensitive and touching narrative written by Javed Akhtar was based on Shaukat’s book of memoirs, “Yaad ki Rehguzar” as well as on Kaifi’s interviews and writings. It provides a fascinating insight into Kaifi’s and his wife’s journey of life, their magnificent romance culminating in a marriage that lasted 55 years, life in Bombay in the 50s,
C
the Progressive Writer’s Movement, Kaifi’s social activism and communist leanings, his path-breaking work as a lyricist in Hindi cinema, etc. At one level, it was a heart-warming love story between two individuals. At another, it was the journey of a poet whose work has inspired generations of Indians. Indeed, the tasks were divided well; Javed-the writer of the couple--told the funny stories and gave the poetic recitals, while Shabana the seasoned actress did the emotive heavy lifting, as the stories assigned to her tended toward the poignant. The narrative was interspersed with mesmerizing renditions of Kaifi’s poems and songs by the young ghazal exponent, Jaswinder Singh, accompanied by a band of fine musicians, from “Meri Awaaz Suno” to “Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam” to “Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho” to “Jhuki Jhuki Si Nazar. Jaswinder Singh has a beautiful voice, and all of the ghazals were lovely. They were chosen to relate to the material read out in different segments of the event. “It was a pleasant surprise to note that
Kaifi and his wife were extremely progressive. Their lives are a source of inspiration for all of us”, opined many a member of the audience. Echoing the same sentiment, an elderly person from among the audience stated that witnessing the great performances by Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi was not only a double delight but also an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “The poetry-lovers of Chicago have huge appetite for niche programs like these and will be looking forward to similar such events in the near future”, he added, The audiences, who went “wah wah” during the entire duration of the event, were transported back in time to one of those colorful mushairas (recital of poetry) of preindependent India. Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar charmed the audiences and left them craving for more. Critical acclaim and appreciation came from artists, writers, directors, connoisseurs, journalists, and the audience at large. The event won over audiences not just across borders but also across different classes and age-groups. Music, poetry, drama, romance, humor, pathos, and triumph of the human spirit made it universally appealing to the music connoisseurs as well as the theatre enthusiasts. Earlier, Shebani Kulkarni welcomed the audience on behalf of Dhrishti and the Meadows Club. In addition to the audience, he thanked national promoters, Karl Kalra and Liv2u, for bringing the poetry and music lovers of Chicago face-to-face with the landmark event, “Kaifi Aur Main”.
Patriotic fervor marks Pakistan Day fete BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- The Consulate General of Pakistan celebrated the 76th Pakistan Day with patriotic fervor and traditional zeal to commemorate the adoption of the March 23 1940 Lahore Resolution demanding a separate homeland for the Muslims in South Asia, which finally culminated in the emergence of Pakistan on the world map, seven years later. The event was graced by 32 ConsulsGeneral, in addition to around 300 eminent officials from City Government, offices of the Foreign Missions, and distinguished members of the Pakistani community from across the length and breadth of the US Midwest. Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, Consul General of Pakistan, in his keynote address, said that the people of Pakistan held March 23 in high esteem as it reminded the nation of the momentous times when “our forefathers rallied around the dynamic personality of Quaid-iAzam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and, under his inspiring leadership, resolved to carve out an independent sovereign country for the Muslims in South Asia”. Tirmizi explained that Pakistan had made remarkable strides in multiple fields, despite innumerable challenges. “Pakistan has finally emerged as a vibrant democracy, ably supported by an independent

judiciary, a free media, and an enlightened civil society”, he added. While applauding the contribution of the one million-strong Pakistani-Americans to the strong bilateral relations between Pakistan and the US, Tirmizi urged them to act as a bridge to further cement these excellent ties. He said that the two countries had always stood by each other in times of crises and converted the huge reservoir of mutual goodwill
into a robust partnership in diverse fields, especially trade and investment. The well-appreciated segment of the function was singing of sufi songs by Shazia Khan, a classical and folk music vocalist from Pakistan. She was supported by Raheel Sadiq Robinson on tabla and Mudassir Bokhari on keyboard. The guests, including the diplomatic corps and the US dignitaries, thoroughly enjoyed the performances.

DePaul, 11 other colleges hit by anti-semitic hackers
BY A STAFF WRITER INCOLN PARK, IL -- DePaul University was hit with hate flyers criticizing Jews this week, reportedly made by hackers using the institution’s own printers. Similar flyers were found at least a dozen universities in the United States, including the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, UCLA and Princeton, also the work of hackers. “We don’t know if this was timed to Easter or not,” said the Anti-Defamation League’s Todd Gutnik. At DePaul, several printers were hacked last week, according to the DePaulia, DePaul’s student newspaper, and began appearing in “output trays throughout DePaul’s campus.” In a statement, DePaul president Dennis Holtschneider said the school was “investigating the breach as well as the source and origin of this despicable act.” According to Robert Trestan of the New England Anti-Defamation League, where in the past people would print flyers and slip them under doors, hacking into systems on campuses is “a new tactic.” “They’ve apparently found a vulnerable way into university and college computer systems to be able to do this,” Trestan said. “It’s important for law enforcement to figure this out.” “It’s quite concerning because it’s so widespread,” he said. “There was considerable planning that was involved to do this.” At Amherst, officials said the flyers appeared to have been transmitted from an off-campus location. The flyers touted white supremacy and blamed Jews for immigration “destroying” the country.

make them aware of PAVE’s commitment to civic engagement, and to obtain their assessment on what it will take for the stalemated Illinois budget to be passed. The impact of the state budget impasse on PAVE Coalition members is devastating. It is badly hurting the South Asian immigrant and refugee communities. There are over 242,000 South Asians living in Illinois, made up of people born abroad or in the United States and descending from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, or Bhutan. Among South Asians in Illinois, 67% are US citizens and therefore eligible to register and vote.
“There are over 92,000 Asian Americans in the 8th Congressional District, and with over 43,000 who are South Asian,” said Reema Kapur, Executive Director of SAAPRI. “We will make our community’s values and needs heard by voting.” The meeting was another reflection of the ongoing effort to increase civic engagement and political empowerment led by Advancing JusticeChicago and SAAPRI. Over the past two months, the organizations have partnered with various South Asian American serving institutions in an effort to increase voter education and election participation in the suburban South Asian community.
Muslim Dairy Queen owner slams Hindus BY A STAFF WRITER EMAH, TX – The Hindu community is calling on a Muslim Dairy Queen franchise owner to take down signs from his Houston-area business that compare Hindus to monkeys. Mohammad Dar, a 65-year-old Muslim and US citizen from Pakistan, claims he is not prejudiced for installing the signs-instead saying Hindus are “racists”. Dar said that he decided to post the displays at his business after “researching” Hinduism--the third-largest religion in the world--for 14 years. the limit and law.” “It’s nothing personal, it’s educational,” he reportedly added. “I’m really making people mad, but what I’m doing is communicating and inviting them to communicate….they think I am attacking their religion, but I am not.” Dairy Queen’s corporate office called the instalment of the signs an “unfortunate action” and said they are “not representative of our iconic family brand.” “We do not condone this behavior,” company officials said. Rajan Zed, president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, has called for International Dairy Queen Inc. to issue an apology on the matter.
Prof. Satyen Chatterjee
BY A STAFF WRITER EATTLE, WASH. -- Satyen Chatterjee, who formerly taught at the University of Washington Business School, has been sentenced to more than three years in prison for fraud. The Indian American educator pleaded guilty last May to federal charges, admitting he swindled at least five investors out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Chatterjee ran Strategic Capital Management from 1992 until state regulators ordered him to close down in 2013. US Attorney Annette Hayes said in a written statement that Chatterjee, a native of India, tricked members of his own Bengali community. US District Judge Thomas Zilly sentenced him on March 23 to 40 months in prison and nearly $550,000 in restitution. Chatterjee admitted to engaging in a scheme to defraud investors between 2007 and 2013. According to records filed in the case, at least five victims were defrauded of more than $600,000. Chatterjee convinced various investors to make investments with him in what he represented were fixed-rate securities. However, he transferred the funds to his own bank accounts, used the money for his own expenses, or lost it as a day trader in the stock market. He also solicited and accepted investments in a nutritional supplement company but instead of actually using the money for the company, Chatterjee used the money for his own expenses or to pay off prior investors in the fixed-rate securities scheme.

Hindus resent textbook edits by faculty group BY A STAFF WRITER ACRAMENTO, CA -- Over 100 Hindu Americans assembled in Sacramento, Calif., on March 24 to voice their concerns regarding the California Department of Education Instructional Quality Commission’s (IQC) plans to accept edits made by a group of South Asian studies faculty members. The proposed edits seek to remove references to India and Hinduism, and replace them with the terms “South Asia” and “ancient Indian religion,” respectively. Some of the proposed edits, according to the Hindu American Foundation (HAF), include eliminating mention of Hinduism’s acceptance of religious diversity, and the contributions of Hindu sages of different backgrounds such as Valmiki and Vyasa. The IQC voted to reject some of the proposed changes after public awareness campaigns, including letters from professors of religion and history who disputed the faculty group’s assertions. During the public comment period, HAF, along with other Hindu organizations, community members, as well as non-Hindus, testified on inaccuracies in the proposed edits and
S
the last-minute process by which they were initially uniformly accepted after prior recommendations from numerous academics were rejected. They argued that edits would erase their religious and cultural histories and urged the commission to reject the changes. They also asked the commissioners to adopt a more inclusive and culturally competent framework document. The community’s efforts were also supported by a coalition of 20
government leaders and elected officials, including Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), state Senator Steven M. Glazer (District 7) and several local leaders. The IQC will publish its revised set of recommendations two weeks before the May 11 State Board of Education hearing. HAF said it would continue to work with community members, educators and various officials to ensure that the Board adopts a document that is inclusive of Hindus and a better resource for teachers across the state.

Wayne Hindu temple celebrates Holi BY A STAFF WRITER AYNE, NJ – The India Cultural Society organized Holi celebrations that attracted some 600 devotees, committee members, and volunteers besides special guests. The temple in Wayne was beautifully decorated by volunteers who worked for two weeks to stage this most-awaited and popular event, the festival of colors, that is, Holi. The event started at 6 pm with Satyanarayan Katha/Puja and chanting of Bhajans and Holi Songs by Hetal Patel joined by devotees and a musical team. The Holi Puja was performed by Shashtri JI Arvind Mehta with committee members and devotees later smearing each other’s faces with dry colors like Gulal and wishing each other well. The chairman of the institution, Jyotindra Patel, addressed the gathering, conveying his heartiest wishes on the occasion of Holi even as Shashtri Ji explained the significance of the festival.
W
Presence of children and youth from all walks of life was significant. After the devotional songs of Holi and Aarti, all the devotees went outside the Temple for the Holi bonfire with devotees offering coconut and dates. Every one enjoyed the Mahaprasad sponsored
by Satish and Asha of Jyoti Restaurant. The India Cultural Society celebrates all the religious festivals as well as cultural, spiritual, educational and health-related events throughout the year and also supports fund-raising events for empowerment of remote rural and tribal India.
NJ man pleads guilty in $3.6-m fraud case
Dr Manoj Patharkar
BY A STAFF WRITER RENTON, NJ -- A Middlesex County man pleaded guilty on March 28 to conspiring with a South Amboy physician to launder $3.6 million in earnings and deliver kickbacks to doctors, the Attorney General’s Office announced. Mohammed Shamshair, 52, of Sayreville, pleaded guilty to first-degree charges of conspiracy and money laundering, admitting he participated in a scheme to help the doctor, Manoj Patharkar, owner of Pain Management Associates of Central Jersey, avoid paying $327,000 in state taxes. Patharkar faces charges of firstdegree conspiracy, first-degree money laundering, second-degree theft by deception and third-degree counts of filing fraudulent tax returns and failure to pay taxes. The two men were arrested in August, following an indictment alleging they had cheated the state out of taxes by creating 28 “phantom employees,” using the names, Social Security numbers and other identifying information obtained from an accountant who was promised a share of the money, the Attorney General’s Office said. Patharkar allegedly issued at least 1,574 checks totaling $2.2 million made payable to his so-called employees to make the scheme appear legitimate. Shamshair also pleaded guilty to second-degree conspiracy to commit a commercial bribery in a second scheme, in which he admitted using $1.56 million of the laundered funds to pay “illegal cash kickbacks” to 12 doctors in exchange for referring patients to one of Patharkar’s two pain management clinics. Shamshair acted on Patharkar’s behalf, Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman said in a statement. He participated in a similar arrangement with another man, Rehan Zuberi, delivering more than $200,000 in payments to 10 doctors in exchange for referrals to Zuberi’s medical imagining center. Under a plea deal, Shamshair faces eight-year concurrent prison sentences.

COMMUNITY NEWS/ EAST COAST faces 20-yr jail for Mass deportation of Muslims deplored Indianmoney laundering FRIDAY, APRIL 01, 2016
BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- Immigration authorities have begun t r a n s p o r t i n g So u t h A s i a n detainees to Florence, Arizona, as a staging ground for impending mass deportation. Many of the Muslim migrants from Bangladesh being transported were participants in the #Freedomgiving hunger strikes at the end of 2015 that roiled a dozen detention centers across the country and brought attention to the unjustified detention of Muslim and South Asian migrants. One of the detainees, who gave a name of Manik and is scheduled to be deported as well, said that “they are gathering all of us here from across the different jails, but none of the men here want to be sent back. Most are terrified and crying about what will happen to them if they are sent back.” As Candidates Trump and Cruz stir antiMuslim sentiment calling for the surveillance, ban, and deportation of Muslims, the Department of Homeland Security under the Obama Administration is already racially profiling and discriminating against Muslim migrants, by holding detainees for indefinite and extended periods of time, setting unusually high bond amounts, and now preparing to deport Muslim detainees en masse to their potential deaths. “It is alarming that the State Department
N
the detainees may be expelled despite being witnesses and victims to civil rights violations that are under open investigation by the Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties within DHS. “While many have rightfully condemned the anti-Muslim rhetoric spewed during ongoing presidential campaigns, our current policies are just as terrifying. We call on the State Department and DHS to immediately halt these deportations and for administration officials to end these policies that single out Muslim migrants,” adds Linda Sarsour, Director of MPower Change. Activists raise grave concerns for the men’s safety and have begun using the hashtag #Deported2Death to highlight the consequence of their potential removals and are calling on the State Department and Department of Homeland Security to cancel their removals and allow them to pursue their asylum claims.
Man accused of Indian woman’s murder BY A STAFF WRITER ROY, MI -- A man suspected of stabbing an Indian American woman to death in her home at the Somerset Park Apartments here has been charged with murder. Charles Anthony Stephens, 53, of Troy, was arraigned in 52-4 District Court on March 23 on charges of felony murder. He appeared in court without an attorney and requested a court-appointed attorney. Bond was denied. He remains in custody The police said Stephens, who lived in the same apartment building as the victim, was taken into custody at night on March 22.
BY A STAFF WRITER ALTIMORE, MD -- Kaushik Modi, 43, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, a native of India living illegally in the United States, pleaded guilty last week to a money laundering conspiracy arising from a scheme to launder millions of dollars of fraud proceeds obtained from individual victims through a variety of scams. According to his plea agreement, Modi received text messages from conspirators instructing him to buy large numbers of stored value cards, principally GreenDot cards, and to forward the PIN numbers of the cards to other unidentified coconspirators. Modi’s co-conspirators loaded money onto the stored value cards using a variety of scams. Some of the money came from calls made by persons impersonating IRS employees who convinced innocent taxpayers that they owed taxes to the IRS, and needed to send money to the co-conspirators to avoid arrest and incarceration. On at least two occasions, victims of the IRS impersonation fraud deposited money directly into accounts held in Modi’s name. Other money was derived by offering merchandise for sale on the internet and then failing to provide the merchandise once money was received from the victim-purchaser. After money was loaded on the stored value cards, Modi was instructed to use the cards to buy money orders, principally MoneyGram money orders at Walmart stores, and then to deposit those money orders into bank accounts either in Modi’s name or the names of others. From January 1, 2014 to March 24, 2015, Modi deposited 241 money orders totalling $2,077,308.20 into his bank accounts. Moreover, Modi frequently bought the money orders using stored value cards that were activated using the identification of identity theft victims. Modi has agreed to forfeit $902,678.08, the amount involved in the money laundering offense that the government has seized or restrained. Modi faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. US District Judge J. Frederick Motz scheduled sentencing for May 12.

is getting involved in matters of immigration, detention, and deportation, and so recklessly jeopardizing the lives of asylum-seeking migrants who are escaping repressive and dangerous conditions,” said Fahd Ahmed, Executive Director of DRUM (Desis Rising Up & Moving). DRUM has coordinated hunger strikes and advocacy efforts for the detainees over the last 6 months. He added that “their lives have been further endangered by the mishandling of their cases and confidential information by the US government.” In violation of international law, the names and personal information of the detainees were given to the Bangladeshi government by the US Embassy in Bangladesh, and their names were then leaked and published by the Bangladeshi media. Sunbathing may decrease heart disease risk LONDON: Researchers have found that active sun exposure habits is linked to decrease in heart disease and noncancer/non-heart disease deaths. The researchers looked into the paradox that women who sunbathe are likely to live longer than those who avoid the sun, even though sunbathers are at an increased risk of developing skin cancer. The study involved 29,518 Swedish women who were followed for 20 years. The study found that longer life expectancy among women with active sun exposure habits was related to a decrease in heart disease and noncancer/nonheart disease deaths, causing the relative contribution of death due to cancer to increase. Whether the positive effect of sun exposure demonstrated in this
observational study is mediated by Vitamin D, another mechanism related to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, or by unmeasured bias could not be determined. Therefore, additional research is warranted, the scientists said. “We found smokers in the highest sun exposure group were at a similar risk as non-smokers avoiding sun exposure, indicating avoidance of sun exposure to be a risk factor of the same magnitude as smoking,” said lead author of the study Pelle Lindqvist, Karolinska University Hospital, Huddinge, Stockholm, Sweden. The findings were published in the Journal of Internal Medicine. “Guidelines being too restrictive regarding sun exposure may do more harm than good for health,” Lindqvist said.
enrolled 501 couples. They compared lifestyle factors like cigarette use, caffeinated beverage consumption and multivitamin use among 344 couples with a singleton pregnancy from the weeks before they conceived through the seventh week of pregnancy. The results showed that of the
344 pregnancies, 98 ended in miscarriage. Both male and female consumption of more than two caffeinated beverages a day was also associated with an increased hazard ratio. For the preconception period for females of 35 years of age or above the miscarriage risk was nearly twice than that for younger women. “Our findings also indicate that the male partner matters, too,” Buck Louis said. “Male preconception consumption of caffeinated beverages was just as strongly associated with pregnancy loss as females’.” Interestingly, the researchers saw a reduction in miscarriage risk for women who took a multivitamin daily. Taking multivitamins during the preconception period, reduced the pregnancy loss by 55 percent and women who continued to take the vitamins through early pregnancy had a risk reduction of 79 percent.

s there any reason for you not to play in your 60s or 70s? A new study shows that long-term recreational football training improved the health of 63-75 year old untrained men -- reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. “The improvements contribute significantly to reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and diabetes,” said lead author Thomas Rostgaard Andersen from Copenhagen University. The study, published in the international journal PLOS ONE, went on over a full year and examined both the immediate effects and the long-term benefits of the training.
All participants completed the full 52 weeks of training and most of the participants are still playing football together twice a week. The findings showed that after 4 months’ football training, the cardiovascular fitness scores improved by 15 percent, interval work capac-
ity increased by 43 percent and functional capacity by 30 percent. After a year a three percent reduction in BMI, with an increased ability to control blood sugar and an improved capacity to handle harmful oxygen radicals, the study found.

he jokes about “dumb blondes” are, well, just jokes! Researchers have found that the average IQ of blondes may actually be slightly higher than those with other hair colors. While jokes about blondes may seem harmless to some, they can have real-world implications, said study author Jay Zagorsky from The Ohio State University in the US. “Research shows that stereotypes often have an impact on hiring, promotions and other social experi-
ences,” Zagorsky said. “This study provides compelling evidence that there shouldn’t be any discrimination against blondes
based on their intelligence,” Zagorsky pointed out. The study involved 10,878 US women who took the Armed Forces Qualification Test, to determine the intelligence of all recruits. The findings showed that blondehaired White women had an average IQ of 103.2, compared to 102.7 for those with brown hair and 100.5 for those with black hair. Blonde women were slightly more likely to be in the highest IQ category than those with other hair colors, and slightly less likely to be in the lowest IQ category, the findings showed.

The increase of cognitive impairment and its pathologic correlates, such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, is increasing in aging populations and creating a significant burden on health systems. Better insight into the nature and extent of the association between oral health and cognitive function is of great importance since it could lead to preventive interventions for cognitive performance.
vegetarian diet has led to a gene mutation that may make Indians more susceptible to inflammation, and by association, increased risk of heart disease and colon cancer, says a study. Researchers from Cornell University analysed frequencies of the mutation in 234 primarily vegetarian Indians and 311 US individuals. They found the gene variant associated with a vegetarian diet in 68 percent of the Indians and in just 18 percent of Americans. The findings appeared in the online edition of the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution. By using reference data from the 1000 Genomes Project, the research team provided evolutionary evidence that the vegetarian diet, over many generations, may have driven the higher frequency of a mutation in the Indian population. The mutation, called rs66698963 and found in the FADS2 gene, is an insertion or deletion of a sequence of DNA that regulates the expression of two genes, FADS1 and FADS2. These genes are key to making long chain polyunsaturated fats. Among these, arachidonic acid is a key target of the pharmaceutical industry because it is a central culprit for those at risk for heart disease, colon cancer, and many other
inflammation-related conditions, the study said. The genetic variation — called an allele — that has evolved in the vegetarian populations of India is also found in some African and East Asian population that have histori-
Vegetarian diet can lead to a genetic mutation that may increase the risk of heart disease and colon cancer in Indians cally favored vegetarian diets. The vegetarian allele evolved in populations that have eaten a plant-based diet over hundreds of
generations, the researchers said. “Our analysis points to both previous studies and our results being driven by the same insertion of an additional small piece of DNA, an insertion which has a known function. We showed this insertion to be adaptive, hence of high frequency, in Indian and some African populations, which are vegetarian,” said co-lead author of the study Kaixiong Ye. The adaptation allows these people to efficiently process omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and convert them into compounds essential for early brain development and if they stray from a balanced omega-6 to omega-3 diet, it may make people more susceptible to inflammation, and by association, increased risk of heart disease and colon cancer, the study said.
