BY A STAFF WRITER NDIANAPLIS, IN -- The Indiana Supreme Court ruled recently that Sameer Thakar will stand trial in the case of his alleged sexting to a 16-year-old girl. Sameer Thakar The court ruled unanimously with a 5-0 vote that Thakar, an Indian American former teacher at North Central High School in Indianapolis, will go to trial for allegedly sending a nude photo of himself to the teenaged girl from Oregon in 2014. If convicted, Thakar could spend up to three years behind bars. The ruling is surprising in that the state says it is legal to have sex with a 16-year-old, though sexting nude photos to a minor is not. Thakar allegedly sent the photo to the girl after they discussed her age, and she told him she wished she were 18. He later confessed to the police that he had a problem with chatting online. The Indian American has been charged with a felony count of disseminating matter harmful materials to a minor. The charge was originally dismissed last year on the basis that the state’s dissemination statute was vague because the age of consent for sex in Indiana is 16. While an appeals court upheld the dismissal, the state’s top court disagreed. The Supreme Court judges acknowledged that while the laws may seem inconsistent, there’s no conflict between them because it’s still possible to follow both simultaneously.

US-Canada deal in the offing? The US President said he would consider a trade pact with Canada minus Mexico, adding that both the US and Canada wanted to protect their workers IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump has said if talks to reform North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) fail, he could envisage a US-Canada trade pact, excluding Mexico. The US president said if there was no deal on the NAFTA, it would be terminated. He was speaking at the White House with visiting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, BBC reported. Replying to a question, Trump said he would consider a trade pact with Canada minus Mexico, adding that both the US and Canada wanted to protect their workers. The current round of talks on renegotiating the trade bloc is reported to be stalling, with Mexico opposing a US

First lady row: Melania Trump responds to Ivana Trump WASHINGTON: Donald Trump’s current wife Melania slammed the US President’s first wife, Ivana who called herself “first lady” as “attention-seeking and self-serving noise”, the media reported. On Monday, Ivana Trump in an ABC interview ahead of the release of her memoir, “Raising Trump”, said she was “basically first Trump wife, I’m first lady”. The Czech-American businesswoman also boasted of having a direct line to the White House which she uses to she talk to the President about once every 14 days. “I have the direct number to White House but I don’t really want to call him there because Melania is there

Trump to roll out Iran strategy soon WASHINGTON: The White House has said US President Donald Trump will make an announcement this week on an overall Iran strategy. “He’ll make that later this week,” said White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders here at the daily briefing, Xinhua reported. “The President has reached a decision on an overall Iran strategy. He wants to make sure that we have a broad policy to deal with that, not just one part of it,” Sanders added. Several reports had earlier said Trump would “decertify” the landmark Iran nuclear deal. —IANS

and I don’t really want to cause any kind of jealousy or something like that because I’m basically first Trump wife, OK? I’m first lady, OK?” she told ABC, laughing. The current First Lady fired back via a sharply-worded statement to CNN from her communications director, Stephanie Grisham later that day.

est round of talks, said terminating Nafta could harm US-Mexico relations and damage co-operation on issues like fighting drug-trafficking. But he said Canada had to “be ready for anything” if the attempts

to modernize the 23-year-old deal faltered. Overall trade between the three Nafta partners reached $1.1 trillion in 2016. American and Mexican officials say they want a re-negotiated deal by December. This week the influential US Chamber of Commerce warned it was time to “ring alarm bells” over the NAFTA talks. The business lobby group said there were “several poison pill proposals” put on the table by the US that could tank the renegotiations. Those include US demands to adjust the rules of origin, which would increase the percentage of the content of car parts and other materials that would come from NAFTA countries in order for a good to qualify as duty free — a specific concern for the North American auto industry.

Ivanka urges Cong to act on DACA WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump has urged Congress to act on immigration and called the fate of immigrants who have Ivanka Trump been covered by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program a “very complicated issue”. “You do have the question of the Dreamers: 800,000 young people, most of whom are under 25, most of whom are women. What role should the Dreamers be playing in the future workforce?” moderator Nina Easton asked the First Daughter during a panel discussion on Monday at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit. “This is a very complicated issue that needs a long-term congressional fix,” she said. —IANS

ildfires raging across Northern California have killed at least 21 people as hundreds of firefighters battle the flames and keep thousands of people away from the blaze’s path. Most of the fires were ignited this weekend, driven by winds of more than 50 mph and dry conditions. With no rain in the forecast this week and a chance of gusts of 35 to 40 mph, forecasters said the weather will create challenges for firefighters, CNN reported. More than 20,000 people had been ordered to evacuate and authorities were encouraging others to pack “ready-to-go bags”, in case they had to flee the fast-spreading flames

on a moment’s notice. “I think it would be one of the worst disasters in California history,” Captain Mike Palacio with the California Highway Patrol said at a community meeting. Wildfires burned 115,000 acres in California. The largest fires were

burning in Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino counties. About 28,000 customers had no access to gas service in Santa Rosa, Windsor, Yountville, Napa, and Kenwood, said Shirlee Zane, chair of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors.

Kirstjen Nielsen nominated as Homeland Security secretary IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump has nominated Kirstjen Nielsen, an aide to White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, for the position of secretary of Homeland Security. The announcement came after several US news outlets reported the appointment and earlier reports said Trump rejected several politicians for the job, Xinhua news agency reported. Nielsen, who is currently the White House Principal Deputy Chief of Staff, has extensive professional experience in the areas of homeland security policy and strategy, cybersecurity, critical infrastruc-

ture, and emergency management, the White House said. The 45-year-old Nielsen is the first nominee for the post to have previously worked within the

Department of Homeland Security (DHS). With degrees from the Georgetown School of Foreign Service and the University of Virginia Law School, Nielsen first

served as senior legislative policy director for Transportation and Security Administration under former President George W. Bush and then as Department of Homeland Security chief of staff under the Trump administration. She was Kelly’s top aide when the former four-star Marine general led the DHS before moving to the West Wing with Kelly who was appointed in July after former White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus was pushed out. Her no-nonsense style, which contributed to Kelly’s efforts to streamline operations and instil discipline in the White House, has rankled staffers accustomed to a freewheeling West Wing under Priebus.

BRIEFS Sex with wife below 18 is rape: SC

Talwars acquitted

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday said sex with wife below 18 years of age is rape, striking down the provision of criminal law that permitted sex with a wife aged between 15 and 18. Referring to the Exception 2 to Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code that allowed such a sexual contact which now stands struck down, the court in its verdict said, “ ... in our opinion, sexual intercourse with a girl below 18 years of age is rape regardless of whether she is married or not.”

he Allahabad High Court on Thursday acquitted dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar in the murder of their teenaged daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj by giving them the benefit of the doubt, but left questions unanswered on who killed them. A bench of Justice B.K. Narayana and Justice A.K. Mishra acquitted the couple for the murder of 14-year-old Aarushi Talwar at her Jalvayu Vihar home in Noida on May 16, 2008. Their lawyer Rebecca John said

the evidence presented by the CBI “did not stand judicial scrutiny and that is the end of it”. Pinaki Misra, another defense counsel, said the CBI court judgment was “absolutely perverse and the High Court has set it aside correctly”. After a Special CBI Court in Ghaziabad convicted them for the murders in 2013 and handed them life terms, the Talwars appealed in the Allahabad High Court against the verdict. The Talwars were lodged in Dasna jail in Ghaziabad district ever since their 2013 conviction. Another defense lawyer Tanveer Ahmad said they were awaiting a

US businesses bet big on new envoy to India With Kenneth Juster as the new US Ambassador to India, there is a chance to balance trade between the two countries AROONIM BHUYAN, NEW DELHI

W

ith Kenneth Juster being named as the new US Ambassador to India, US businesses are expecting that bilateral commercial ties will grow with him in that position, according to a senior office-bearer of a US-India business body. “We are very optimistic, we are grateful that he accepted the job. It’s maybe the position that business has with his appointment because he understands business,” Edward Monser, Vice-President of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), told IANS. “We have worked with him before. He has had relationships with all of us in the executive council of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum,” Monser, who is also the President and COO of Emerson Electric, said. “So, we know him well. We trust him. Most importantly, he

‘Unbothered’ about the Indian judiciary Judicial reprimands are the last thing that the BJP wants, whether in internal or external affairs AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

R

ashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat’s advice to cow vigilantes not to bother over much about judicial strictures shows a measure of annoyance with the roadblocks which the Hindutva lobby is facing in a secular polity. The dissatisfaction may have increased in the saffron camp in view of two more Supreme Court pronouncements relating to interfaith marriages and the fate of the Rohingyas, the hapless refugees from Myanmar who have aroused the saffron brotherhood’s ire presumably because they are Muslims. On inter-faith marriages, the court has wanted to know in the context of a Kerala High Court judgment whether the judiciary can annul a wedding between two adults belonging to two different religions. It is a rhetorical question which strikes at the root of a Sangh Parivar agenda seeking to bar by fair means and foul any love affair or marriage between a Hindu woman and Muslim man and, by implication, between Hindus and Christians or

any other religious community. The Parivar argues that such nuptials are no more than a ploy to lure the woman into a familial arrangement to facilitate her conversion. Hence, the phrase “love jehad”, depicting a hapless Hindu woman

who is the victim of a predatory Muslim male. The apex court’s intervention is in a case in Kerala where the High Court has nullified the marriage of a 24-year-old woman with a Muslim, while the Supreme Court had earlier ordered a

National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe in the matter although the NIA is supposed to look into only acts of terror. Irrespective of the final outcome of the Supreme Court’s examination of the case, the arguments that have

already been aired such as whether the two prominent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politicians who have Hindu wives can be accused of “love jehad” are bound to be awkward for the Parivar. But what must be no less disconcerting for the latter is that the undermining of some of the programmes, which the saffron camp has pursued diligently, can raise questions about other divisive initiatives like ghar wapsi or converting Muslims to Hinduism. One of the main proponents of the “love jehad” campaign was Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath before he took office. Of late, his ardour to keep marriages within the confines of each community has been dampened by the Centre’s unease about a rise in communal temperature lest it should affect Narendra Modi’s development agenda. At a time when Yogi Adityanath is proving to be as ineffective a Chief Minister as Suresh Prabhu was a Railway Minister, judicial reprimands are the last thing which the BJP wants, whether in internal affairs or in matters which have an external dimension.

‘Turkey row not affecting military activities’ WASHINGTON: The Pentagon has said diplomatic tension between the US and Turkey has not affected their military activities. “I can confirm that these developments have not impacted our operations or personnel,” Pentagon Spokesman Robert Manning told reporters here on Tuesday, Xinhua news agency reported. The US and Turkey on Sunday indefinitely halted all non-immigrant visa services to each other’s citizens. The US Embassy in Ankara said “recent events have forced the US government to reassess the commitment of the Turkish Government to the security of US diplomatic facilities and personnel.” The Turkish Embassy in Washington retaliated immediately by issuing a similar statement.

If Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont confirms by Monday that he has, he will be given a further three days to withdraw the declaration. turnout of 43 per cent, Catalan officials say. Anti-independence voters largely boycotted the ballot and there were several reports of irregularities.

National police were involved in violent scenes as they tried to stop the vote taking place. Rajoy said his government had asked the regional government to clarify whether or not it had declared independence. He accused Puigdemont of having created “deliberate confusion” and said he wanted to restore “certainty”. “This call — ahead of any of the measures that the government may adopt under Article 155 of our constitution — seeks to offer citizens the clarity and security that a question of such importance requires,” Rajoy said. “There is an urgent need to put an end to the situation that Catalonia is going through — to return it to safety, tranquillity and calm and to do that as quickly as possible.”

Trump wants merit-based immigration, silent on H1-B ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

W

hile keeping mum on H1-B visas, US President Donald Trump has asked Congress to introduce a merit-based immigration system that could benefit Indians but would also deny green cards to some relatives of immigrants. Trump’s 70-point enforcement plan calling for stiff immigration reforms unveiled by the White house last week would continue to allow the spouses and children of immigrants to get green cards or permanent resident status but not their brothers, sisters and parents. The goal of the merit-based system that awards green cards based on factors like education, employ-

ability and English language proficiency is “to promote assimilation and financial success”, the White House said.

A merit-based system is likely to benefit India if the national quotas limiting green cards to about 20,000 per country per year are

also done away with and they are awarded purely on merit. Because of the large number of highly qualified Indians, most of the professionals from the country face an 11-year wait to get green cards and a merit-based system could cut down the delay. Professionals from all countries except India and three others do not have to wait for their green cards. Trump’s wide-ranging reform package proposes the stiffest immigration reforms ever offered by an administration and seeks to make good on his election promise of getting tough on immigration. But it faces strong opposition in the Congress from Democrats and some Republicans making it unlikely to pass in the near future.

ndia thrashed Macau 4-1 here this week to qualify for the 2019 Asian Cup football tournament. Rowllin Borges (28th minute) put India ahead in the first half before Sunil Chhetri (60th) and Jeje Lalpekhlua (90+2) found the net after the break. Macau defender Man Fai Ho scored an own goal in the 70th minute while trying to clear a pass into the penalty box by India’s Halicharan Narzary. Nicholas Mario de Almeida Torrão scored the lone goal for the visitors in the 37th minute. This is the fourth time that India have qualified for the Asian Cup. The last time they qualified was six years ago when they won the AFC Challenge Cup to book their tickets to the 2011 Asian Cup. The last time India reached the main stage of Asian football’s

showpiece event through the direct qualification route was in 1984. India’s best result at the Asian Cup came in 1964 when they finished runners-up to hosts Israel. The Indians have been in impressive form, winning all the four group matches they have played so far to ensure qualification in style.

The men in blue sit at the top of their group with 12 points, having scored eight goals and conceding only one. Kyrgyzstan are second with four points from three matches, the same as third placed Myanmar. The Central Asians however, are ahead on goal difference. Macau are at the bottom having lost all

their four matches. Even if India lose their remaining two matches, they will still finish among the top two spots in the group which will be enough to book their tickets to the United Arab Emirates for the 2019 edition of Asian football’s showpiece event. The hosts dominated right from the start, with the Macau defenders struggling to keep up with the red hot pace of the Indian forwards. Borges did well to make space and fire in a powerful shot to find the back of the net. Although Torrao managed to equalize for the visitors before the break, the Indians continued to dominate. Chhetri doubled the lead following a fast counter-attack that saw the Indians win the ball in their own half. The pressure led to Macau conceding the third goal. Jeje scored India’s fourth after being fed by Chhetri in the dying minutes.

Messi clinches WC spot for Argentina QUITO (EQUADOR): Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has bagged a hat-trick and with it Argentina has secured a direct berth at next year’s World Cup in Russia with a 3-1 victory over Ecuador. In a dramatic final round in the South American zone qualifiers, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Uruguay and Colombia booked their tickets to the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Xinhua reported. Needing the win to avoid missing the World Cup for the first time since 1970, Argentina got off to a bad start against Ecuador. Argentina took just 12 minutes to equalize with Messi’s first-time strike. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner gave the visitors the lead eight minutes later pocketed his third goal just after the hour mark.

The police have detained two persons for alleged involvement in the incident which followed India’s defeat in the second of the three-match T20I series. Social media was flooded with comments over the incident where people condemned the incident perpetrated by a few goons. After the incident, Australian crick-

Triple H also said current WWE star Jinder Mahal re-inventing himself has earned his respect. “Jinder Mahal has done an amazing job in re-creating himself. Jinder was in WWE for the first time and wasn’t as successful as he would have wanted. But we went back and reenergized himself, dug deeper (within) himself and worked extremely hard in his second chance and is now making the most of it. People can criticize him, but he has earned my respect,” the former star said.

‘The Silence’ : Where child abuse gets sensitive treatment

S

ome truths are so painful that the pain must transmit itself to the audience if it must be made into cinema. The Silence is a very painful film to watch. It strips aside the niceties that would make child rape more palatable to the audience, and puts the audience face-to-face with the innocence of the little girl Chini (Vedashree Mahajan) and the monster Mama (Uncle) who molests her in a godown teeming with possibilities of a staged sexual assault. The horrific act is not shown. Not because the director — the very prolific Gajendra Ahire — wants to

Flaws, this work has in plenty. While the sense of wounded betrayal is felt strongly by little Chini and the audience, we never

get a sense of what makes the monster Mama’s world so infallible. Is it just police apathy and insensitivity, of which there is an ample illustration in the plot? After little Chini’s sister Manda (Kadamabari Kadam) discovers the ghastly truth about her baby sister’s

violation and once Chini grows up into probing searching adulthood (Mugdha Chaphekar) the narrative begins to get heavy-handed, stilted and melodramatic. The build-up to the child’s molestation is supremely smooth. — Subhash K. Jha

Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi represents the 8th district of Illinois, which includes Chicago’s west and northwest suburbs. He was recently also appointed to serve as co-chair in the Democratic Party’s New Economy Task Force. The Schaumburg resident known for his staunch support towards middle class, small businesses and prowomen policies has an inspirational back-story. Like many immigrant families in the U.S., Raja’s parents came to the country in early 70’s and struggled their way to establish themselves in the new land full of promises. Growing up Raja lived with his family in public housing and they used food stamps. The experience taught him that it is crucial that the help he received reaches other families who need it too.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi

INDIAN-AMERICANS NEED TO ENGAGE POLITICALLY –

RAJA KRISHNAMOORTHI Raja Krishnamoorthi took the ‘ideal Indian American’ route when he enrolled himself in an engineering course in the college but life had something far more interesting in store for him. After studying mechanical and aerospace engineering he ran a small business. However he was inspired to take up a political career when he saw former President Obama’s race for office as it filled him with both hope and awe. Today Krishnamoorthi has successfully busted the myth that Indian Americans shy away from entering politics. His political story continues to set an example for thousands of young Indian Americans who wish to be as much a part of the system as their American counterparts. The affable Congressman who lives in Chicago with his wife Priya and three children Vijay, Vikram and Sonia takes some time from his busy schedule and talks to Hi India about everything from his forward-leaning approach to job growth to playing basketball with his sons in the driveway! You have always supported the middle class and are seen as an advocate for middle

class families and their rights. What in your opinion are some important rights that Indian Americans in particular should know? All middle class families should know that they have a right to ask their Congressional office for help. I’m proud to say that my office has a strong track record of helping our constituents navigate a complicated bureaucracy, from Social Security to immigration paperwork.

Do you feel that in the Indian community there is a lack of awareness about rights and also an apprehension to implement it? I think that we can always do more to ensure that our constituents are able to learn about the services that their members provide and the ways that they can access help. Indian-Americans are one of the highest educated and most successful immigrant groups in the United States, but only in 2017 did Congress finally have an equal percentage of desis as the US as a whole. With 4 members in the House, Indian-Americans comprise 1% of the US and 1% of the chamber.

Indians have always been referred as the model minority in America that has shied away from asserting their position. But do you feel in the wake of an anti immigrant rhetoric that built up in the recent past there is more need than before to be aware? Since the election, we’ve seen an alarming rise in anti-immigrant rhetoric and hate violence against many minority communities,

including immigrants and the Indian American community. Now more than ever, we all have to be aware and we need to be able to stand up and speak out against hatred and discrimination. As a member of Congress, that’s an important priority for me. A large part of Indian community in Chicago is into business. As someone who has been a small business owner himself,

SINCE THE ELECTION, WE’VE SEEN AN ALARMING RISE IN ANTIIMMIGRANT RHETORIC AND HATE VIOLENCE AGAINST MANY MINORITY COMMUNITIES, INCLUDING IMMIGRANTS AND THE INDIAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY. NOW MORE THAN EVER, WE ALL HAVE TO BE AWARE AND WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO STAND UP AND SPEAK OUT AGAINST HATRED AND DISCRIMINATION

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2017 2017 FRIDAY, 13 OCTOBER,

THERE’S THE SAYING THAT IF YOU’RE NOT AT THE TABLE, YOU’RE ON THE MENU AND THAT’S AN IMPORTANT THING TO KEEP IN MIND. IF INDIAN AMERICANS DON’T ENGAGE IN POLITICS AND IN SPEAKING OUT, THEN OUR NEEDS WILL NOT BE MET what are the challenges that the business community may face in the current political environment? I think our small businesses are facing a crisis in finding workers who are prepared for the new economy. That’s why I co-introduced legislation to improve our career and technical education with my Republican colleague Rep. GT Thompson. I’m proud to say our bill passed the US House unanimously in June. But Washington can also use more people with a business mentality that is focused on results. When I’m running my business, I don’t care about the politics of my customers. Whether it’s trying to close the skills gap, or supporting middle-class jobs, I’m looking for people who share my goal, not my political party. You have an inspiring story. Your family moved here when you were an infant and the initial few years were spent in public housing. Talk to us about your parents struggle to establish themselves in America and how it shaped you? When my parents first came to this country, we initially were in the middle class and then the economic recession of 1973 happened. Like so many families, mine was impacted and we fell on hard times. Our ability to access public housing and food stamps was critical for us to survive until we were able to get back on our feet. In the aftermath of that, my dad always told my brother and me to make sure that other people were able to access the same help that we received. The Guardian listed you as the up and coming leaders of the Trump resistance in Washington. Why do you think it was important to raise the voice and what is it that the community should also be informed of? There’s the saying that if you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu and that’s an important thing to keep in mind. If Indian Americans don’t engage in politics and in speaking out, then our needs will not be met. It’s no secret that Indian Americans have done well in the United States. Now, IndianAmericans need to engage politically to ensure others have access to the same opportunities to pursue the American Dream. Do you feel that Indians have post the elections been woken up rudely as many were complacent that the anti immigrant rhetoric won’t affect them? I think that unfortunately, the increase in hate violence against many groups including Indian Americans has made everyone more aware of anti-immigrant rhetoric and the need to be vigilant. You have been actively supporting women’s rights too. What is your message

to the Indian American women community? Our economy and our society as a whole is better when women succeed. That’s why I’m

proud to be an ardent advocate for pro-women policies; from supporting a woman’s right to choose to help parents afford childcare.

WHEN MY PARENTS FIRST CAME TO THIS COUNTRY, WE INITIALLY WERE IN THE MIDDLE CLASS AND THEN THE ECONOMIC RECESSION OF 1973 HAPPENED. LIKE SO MANY FAMILIES, WE FELL ON HARD TIMES. OUR ABILITY TO ACCESS PUBLIC HOUSING AND FOOD STAMPS WAS CRITICAL FOR US TO SURVIVE UNTIL WE WERE ABLE TO GET BACK ON OUR FEET. IN THE AFTERMATH OF THAT, MY DAD ALWAYS TOLD MY BROTHER AND ME TO MAKE SURE THAT OTHER PEOPLE WERE ABLE TO ACCESS THE SAME HELP THAT WE RECEIVED

IN ADDITION, HE ALSO SERVES AS THE RANKING MEMBER AND TOP DEMOCRAT ON THE SUBCOMMITTEE ON HEALTH CARE, BENEFITS, AND ADMINISTRATIVE RULES You have argued against repealing the affordable care act. Why is it important and what can be the possible repercussions that everyone must be aware of So far, all of the Republican proposals for repealing the Affordable Care Act have resulted in projections of millions of people losing their health coverage and premiums skyrocketing. Depending on the proposal, essential health benefits and protections for those with preexisting conditions would be jeopardized. At the end of the day, health care policy MUST ensure that more people are covered, not fewer. Talk to us a little about your family life. How do you unwind with your family My life has become very hectic since I’m in Washington most of week, but it’s always a treat to be at home with my wife and children. Any time I get to spend being a normal dad is special – playing basketball in the driveway, or playing catch with the football. I was recently able to address my son Vijay’s civics class, which was a great experience for me even if Vijay was a little embarrassed. You are also a Chicago Cubs fan. What are the other hobbies you pursue I recently finished the book The Alchemist, which was a great read. ctor Rajkummar Rao, whose next big screen outing is Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana, says he is not in a hurry to get married. Rajkummar was asked when he is going to get married in real life. He said: “I am not getting married in real life, so that’s

why I am getting married in films. But there are times in films also where I don’t end up getting married. There is still so much time left for me to get married in real life. Right now, I am focusing on my work and I feel I am still a kid, so I am not in a hurry to get married.”

Found friends for life, says Parineeti

A

ctress Parineeti Chopra, who joined the Golmaal team for the fourth instalment of the blockbuster franchise, says that friends for life is what she has taken away from Golmaal Again. Asked about her experience as the new group member, Parineeti said: “First, I was completely starstruck by these guys. There was this bond between them and they understood each other. They knew exactly what to do. On the other hand, I thought that I might just mess this up. “I didn’t know what to do. But within 10 minutes, I felt welcome and these people are so mad that I realized why I was cast for this film... because I am like them. I really found friends for life and that is my biggest takeaway from the film.”

Shraddha Kapoor ‘bowled over’

A

ctress Shraddha Kapoor, who is gearing up for her Telugu debut in Prabhas-starrer Saaho, says she was bowled over by her co-star Neil Nitin Mukesh. Neil had previously praised Shraddha and southern star Prabhas. “Prabhas is truly a darling and Shraddha Kapoor you are amazing. Looking forward to seeing you soon on the sets. God bless,” Neil had tweeted. Replying to him, Shraddha wrote: “Look who is talking! Everyone (including me) was bowled over by you on the set! Have an amazing time in London.” Neil will reportedly play a villain in Saaho.

‘I don’t play a cop in Race 3’

A

ctress Jacqueline Fernandez says it’s just speculation that she will be seen as a police officer in Race 3. “I do not play a cop in Race 3. That was just a speculation. My character and role...I don’t think can be revealed till we see the film as Race 3 is that kind of a film where everything is a suspense. “But yeah, one thing is for sure — there will definitely be a lot more action for me to do in this film which I am very happy about,” Jacqueline told IANS. The Dishoom actress had earlier said that she is really excited to play the character because “it’s actually a role that sees me in very different light”. Race 3, the third instalment of the hit franchise Race, will be directed by Remo D’souza with Salman Khan as the male lead.

Kher new FTII Chairman

Anupam Kher, who earlier headed CBFC and National School of Drama, has been appointed Chairman of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII)

‘Won’t just be an administrator’ MUMBAI: Anupam Kher, the newly appointed Chairman of the Punebased Film and Television Institute (FTII), says he will work towards sharing his experience with students rather than setting agendas as an administrator. In an interview to IANS here, Anupam, 62, said: “I’m happy and humbled to facilitate students with my 40 years of experience in Indian and international cinema, travel, stage acting and everything. I think sharing experience adds up to perspectives and that’s what I want to do.” Anupam’s appointment as the FTII chief was announced on Wednesday. ‘Chef’: Heartwarming culinary drama

T

here is a lot of teasing between the father and son ,played with endearing casualness by Saif Ali Khan and Svar Kamble. Aptly , Chef teases our appetite for cinema. It’s a culinary delight-warm tender, inviting and appetizing — served up in a dainty dish with a dash of debonair but played-down posturing, like a masterchef who is shy to show off his skills but can’t help it. He’s so adept at what he does. Chef conveys the kind of sagacious skill born not out of arrogance but wisdom sometimes misplaced.Like the protagonist Roshan Kalra’s traditionalist father who believes the kitchen is for women. Speaking of which — arrogance

more than wisdom — Saif Ali Khan’s Roshan Kalra(from Chandni Chowk Delhi married to and divorced from the lovely Malayali danseuse Radha Menon) is por-

trayed as an epitome of prideful arrogance waiting to fall. The fall comes sooner than we expect. Director Menon wastes no time in taking on his protagonist’s burnished ego and cutting it down to size, piece by piece. A major of the film’s lingering charm emanates from the casting. Menon has cast so authentically it almost feels as though the actors were destined to play these parts.

Indian to stand trial in sexting case BY A STAFF WRITER NDIANAPLIS, IN -- The Indiana Supreme Court ruled recently that Sameer Thakar will stand trial in the case of his alleged sexting to a 16-year-old girl.

CA Gov. Jerry Brown signs Bill to protect DACA students BY A STAFF WRITER AKLAND, CA -- California Governor Jerry Brown on October 5 signed a Bill, AB 21, which would protect undocumented students from deportation as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program ends. The Bill has been authored by Indian American state Assemblyman Ash Kalra. President Donald Trump ended the Obama-era initiative on September 5, calling on Congress to come up with legislation which would permanently protect undocumented youth from deportation. DACA, which offers relief from deportation, work permits, and drivers’ licenses to about 800,000 young people, including an estimated 7,218 Indian Americans, is scheduled to end on March 5. Senate Republicans had introduced the SUCCEED Act on September 25 which would offer qualified undocumented youth a path to citizenship over a 15-year period. Kalra’s Bill--AB 21--requires the University of California system, along with the California State University system, the state’s community colleges, and private colleges that receive state funding to extend protection to students, faculty and staff who are undocumented and under threat

of harassment or deportation. The Bill also aims to ensure that DACA recipients continue to have access to financial aid, legal aid, and rights to due process. More than 4,000 students enrolled across the University of California’s nine campuses are DACA recipients. About 10,000 students in the CSU system, and 61,000 students at California’s community colleges are DACA recipients. A 2001 Bill, AB 540, allows certain undocumented students in California to pay in-state tuition.

“I am so proud that our governor has signed Assembly Bill 21 into law and that he and our legislature continue to demonstrate California’s leadership and stand against the tyranny of our current federal administration,” said Kalra in a press statement. “AB 21 defends the tradition and legacy of California’s colleges and universities as beacons of free thought that challenge students in a peaceful and safe environment, where all students, regardless of their immigration status, may continue to take

advantage of the education to which they are entitled, free from intimidation or risk of a loss of access to resources and programs that other students enjoy,” said the assemblyman, who is serving his first term in the California state Legislature. The Bill received bipartisan support in the California state Legislature, and also has the backing of all of the state’s public university systems. Brown has also signed legislation to help fund legal services for unaccompanied minors arriving in California from Central America as well as legal services to assist immigrants seeking naturalization and deportation defense. He has also signed legislation to extend health care coverage and other protections to undocumented children in the state.

Man gets 18-36 years in fatal road mishap

Gennadiy Manannikov

BY A STAFF WRITER CRANTON, PA -- A Pennsylvania man, who admitted he was driving drunk before a wrong-way crash that killed five people, apologized to the victims’ families before he was sentenced to 18 to 36 years in prison on September 29. Thirty-year-old Gennadiy Manannikov, of Lake Ariel, pleaded guilty in July to five counts of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence of alcohol during the January 2016 crash. The state police say Manannikov drove the wrong way on Interstate 81 in northeast Pennsylvania for about 7 miles before colliding head-on with another vehicle. Indian Americans Vinodchandra Patel, 68; Komal Vyas, 30; and Shilpa Patel, 29; were pronounced dead at the scene. Bhavesh Patel, 42, died about a week later. Also killed was a passenger in Manannikov’s car, 32-year-old Ashley Wheeler. He said the defendant had been drinking at a restaurant and his blood-alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit for driving. Wheeler’s sister, Ryan Butler, called the defendant a “sociopathic maniac” who hid his behavior behind a wall of “alcoholmade-me-do-it.

BAPS’s noble gesture for massive tree plantation campaign

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- BAPS Charities supported The Nature Conservancy (TNC) through Walk Green 2017, a series of walkathons hosted by BAPS Charities in centers across the country. On October 7, BAPS Charities presented TNC executives and program leadership with a check for $165,000 which will help to plant 100,000 trees in 2017 and support the Plant a Billion Trees Initiative. BAPS Charities volunteers and Board members presented the check to TNC’s Troy Ettel, Director of Forest Conservation; Myriam Dormer, Urban Conservation Director; Rachel Holmes, Urban Forester; Maria Fisher, Donor Stewardship Officer; and Erin Daly, Donor Relations Manager. This was followed by a tree-planting ceremony. Over the last six months, BAPS

BY A STAFF WRITER YNWOOD, WA -- Prosecutors in Snohomish County in Washington have filed charges against Lata Dass, accusing the 42-year-old Indian American woman of first-degree theft and identity theft. Dass, who allegedly scammed several people out of tens of thousands of dollars while using multiple aliases, had been the target of the police in Lynwood, Wash., for several months. The Lynnwood case started earlier this year in a nail salon near the mall. Dass frequented the salon for manicures and waxing. She told staff she came from a rich family who owned gas stations in California. She also strung together a story about a wealthy friend who was looking to sell two houses in Lynnwood and Bothell, Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Teresa Cox wrote. She got the nail salon owner to bite on the sale of the homes, convincing him to put $10,000 down to secure the houses. The next day, she called the man, telling him the homeowner wanted a larger deposit. If he didn’t come up with more money, one of the houses would go to the family in Canada. The man came back with $6,000 more

L

and the two set a date to sign the contract for the houses. Dass then allegedly dodged the man for weeks, only providing excuses why the two couldn’t meet. When weeks went by, the man stopped by the home he was to buy and the owner said she never planned to sell the home and that she didn’t know Dass. She told the man that the defendant had swindled her out of $14,000, which she never

reported to the police. She said she knew a lot of people who had been scammed by Dass. Dass was eventually tracked down in Bothell, where she had been staying since April, and had yet to pay any rent and owed $16,000. She was arrested on September 7 and was ordered held on $25,000 bail and promptly bonded out. She was arrested by the Federal Way police and booked into King County Jail. She has since been released.

Toddler Sherin

BY A STAFF WRITER USTIN, TX -- A 3-year-old Indian born girl in suburban Dallas is missing after her father said he punished her for not drinking her milk by telling her to stand outside by herself at night near an alley behind her home. The police said Wesley Mathews, 37, has been arrested for suspected child endangerment for the treatment of his daughter, Sherin. He was taken into custody on October 7 after reporting the incident to authorities and has been released on bond. “Mathews said he directed his daughter to stand near a large tree at approximately 3 AM (on October 7) because she wouldn’t drink her milk,” an arrest affidavit said. The father told the police he checked on her about 15 minutes later and she was gone. About five hours after sending her outside, Mathews called the police to report her missing. He told the police that he had seen coyotes in the alley near where he told his daughter to stand. Sherin was born in India and had been adopted by Mathews’s family. She suffered from malnourishment before arriving in the United States and is on a special diet, said Sergeant Kevin Perlich of the Richardson Police Department.

n-demand services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are leaving no stone unturned to increase their Indian subscriber base. Their library of movies and shows forces you to binge-watch. So do TV channels with their marathons, but don’t let watching shows or movies back-to-back be the reason for your expanding waistline, warn experts. Excessive screen time is a concern across the world, says Ramen Goel, Senior Bariatric Surgeon and Director, Center of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, Wockhardt Hospitals. “There are multiple associated health issues with people, especially the younger generation constantly glued to the phone, monitors or TV. It restricts the time for physical activities which are essential for not only physical health but

Bariatric and Laparoscopic Surgeon in Venkateshwar Hospital, Dwarka, agrees that sitting idle for long in front of screens lowers the metabolism of the body. “In fact, your body burns more calories while sleeping than during watching TV. Eating a lot of snacks

Excessive screen time is believed to distract a person from the realities of life and many live in a makebelieve world created by movie producers and game developers more weight gain,” he added. Binge-viewing has affected all age groups. From children glued to their cartoon channels to housewives and elderly people watching their unending soaps, bingewatching has become common, feels Swapnil Jain, Endocrinologist, Columbia Asia Hospital,

Gurugram. “Since almost all of the available time is being consumed in front of the screens, the only muscles getting exercise are probably the eyeballs. So, the mismatch of excessive calorie intake and binge-viewing is severely affecting the body metabolism leading to obesity,” added Jain. The problem doesn’t end with obesity. “Once they get obesity, they develop diabetes, heart and kidney problems much earlier in their lives. Technology also interferes with sleep,” said Manjunath Malige, Endocrinologist and Diabetologist, Fortis Hospital, Bengaluru. Sharing a case study, Malige said once a 14-year-old boy became so obese that now he has pre-diabetes. “The kid was addicted to gadgets. So, he was not involved in any physical activities,” said Malige. As for the younger lot, parents have to play an important role in helping their children get rid of their habit.

Keep acne at bay Snapchat could be NEW DELHI: No matter how much you want them to go away, one must avoid going over the top with home remedies to make acne go away, and not touch the affected area, say experts. Shikhee Agrawal, Head Training, The Body Shop, and Kiran Lohia, Dermatologist at Lumiere Dermatology, share some tips on how to fight acne. l Many times acne is caused by internal imbalances, especially with your hormones. Blood tests and ultrasounds can help rule out anything that is causing acne from within. Problems within your gut can also cause acne through a pathway called the “gut-skin axis”. To stop this, eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, pre and pro-biotics. Also, avoid dairy and high glycemic foods as they worsen or create hormonal imbalances. l Do not be too harsh with your skin. Many think that acne is simply an overproduction of oil and they can scrub it dry with harsh soaps and exfoliators. The truth is that overly-dry skin can make acne even worse. Acne is an inflammatory process

that causes a lot of redness and swelling; the harder you scrub, the more likely you will damage your skin leading to marks and worsening irritation. Also, do not pick at your pimples, this will only result in marks. l Stay away from home remedies. Acne takes a long time to treat, 3-6 months to be exact. It can also get worse before it gets better because acne from underneath the skin rises to the surface as part of the healing process. People get impatient and try home remedies like lemon, toothpaste, or garlic on zits. These things can actually burn your skin! Warm and cold compresses are okay. Otherwise you should look into a safe, sulfur-containing spot treatment. l Opt in for the perfect cleanser. It is important to exfoliate your skin not excessively but 2-3 times a day. If the skin has enough moisture it doesn’t secrete its own oil. l Moisturize your skin frequently. Your skin needs to be moisturized regularly to keep the outer layer of the skin properly hydrated and leave it feeling soft and supple. —IANS

t a time when people struggle with a seemingly diminishing attention span, Snapchat could be the best form of communication but its overuse could make you addictive, researchers say. “For certain people, Snapchat enables them to overcome communication apprehension by using a different means of communication where they do not have a threat in

their face. At the same time, there are people who are addicted to it,” said graduate student J.J. Delacruz at Texas Tech University. For the study, researchers recruited students in the College of Media and Communication through the department’s Sona survey system, where students earn extra credit in certain classes for participating in online surveys. They also administered the survey to those who responded to requests through TechAnnounce — the offi-

cial email announcement/communication method for Texas Tech University — totalling almost 500 students altogether. The survey asked students who use Snapchat about their reasons for using the medium, including needs and motivations. It also asked about general social media use motivations.

T

he annual cost of treating the consequences of obesity such as heart disease, diabetes, liver disease, depression and many types of cancer will reach a staggering $13 billion in India by 2025, according to a new experts estimate. The global annual medical cost of treating these serious consequences of obesity is expected to reach $1.2 trillion per year by 2025, data from the World Obesity Federation released this week showed. In India, the annual cost of treating these consequences is esti-

mated to reach $13 billion or cumulative costs of $90 billion between now and 2025. The percentage of Indian adults living with obesity is set to jump to around 10 percent (3.1 percent male and 6.9 percent female) by 2025 from 7.5 percent (2.3 percent male and 5.2 percent female) in 2014, the new analysis revealed. The data demonstrated how investing in the prevention, early intervention and treatment of obesity is a cost-effective action for governments and health services. Investment can also help in achieving the 2025 targets set by the World Health Organization to halt

the rise in obesity The and to achieve a percentage 25 percent relative reduction of Indian in mortality obese adults from various is set to jump non-communicable diseases. to 10 percent “Obesity is by 2025 now a worldwide epidemic which absorbs a vast amount of our healthcare resources. The annual medical costs of treating the consequences of obesity such as diabetes and heart disease is truly alarming,” said Ian Caterson, President of World Obesity Federation.

Penicillin allergy may raise infection risk in patients

Antibiotics for tooth pain risky?

NEW YORK: Surgical patients with recorded penicillin allergy may be at 50 percent higher risk of developing infections, new research has found. The study, which is published online in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, indicates that preoperative penicillin evaluation could effectively reduce surgical site infections in these patients. “This study has direct clinical significance,” said lead author Kimberly Blumenthal from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in the US. The researchers noted that 40 percent of health-care-related infections in hospitalized patients occur

ntibiotics prescribed by dentists may contribute to the growing problem of Clostridium difficile (C. diff ) — a serious and potentially deadly infection that causes severe diarrhea, says a study. Dentists write more than 24.5 million prescriptions for antibiotics a year. And many of those antibiotics are likely unnecessary, the researchers said. Antibiotics kill bad and good bacteria in the gastrointestinal (GI) system. Wiping out the protective bacteria can allow the growth of C. diff bacteria — one of the top three most urgent antibiotic-resistant

at the site of surgical incisions, and such infections can lead to complications and even death, also increasing health care costs. The researchers reviewed the medical records of almost 8,400 patients who underwent common surgical procedures at the MGH from 2010 through 2014.

threats that is identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “Dentists have been overlooked as a source of antibiotic prescribing,

which can potentially delay treatment when doctors are trying to determine what is causing a patient’s illness,” said lead author Stacy Holzbauer, from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). “It’s important to educate dentists about the potential complications of antibiotic prescribing, including C. diff. It is essential that they be included in efforts to improve antibiotic prescribing.” In the study, presented at IDWeek 2017 in California, the team interviewed 1,626 people with community-associated C. diff between 2009 and 2015. Of those, 926 (57 percent) reported they had been prescribed antibiotics, 136 (15 percent) of those for dental methods.

Breast cancer tied to bacterial imbalances IANS, NEW YORK

R

esearchers have found that the bacterial composition of breast tissue of healthy women are different from that of women with breast cancer. The study published in the journal Oncotarget showed that healthy breast tissue contains more of the bacterial species Methylobacterium, a finding which could offer a new perspective in the battle against breast cancer. Bacteria that live in the body, known as the microbiome, influence many diseases. Most research has been done on the “gut” microbiome, or bacteria in the digestive tract.

But researchers have long suspected that a “microbiome” exists within breast tissue and plays a role in breast cancer but it has not yet been characterized. In this study, the research team

Bacteria that live in the body, known as the microbiome, influence many diseases from Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, US, took the first step toward understanding the composition of the bacteria in breast cancer by uncover-

ing distinct microbial differences in healthy and cancerous breast tissue. “To my knowledge, this is the first study to examine both breast tissue and distant sites of the body for bacterial differences in breast cancer,” said co-senior author Charis Eng, Chair of Cleveland Clinic’s Genomic Medicine Institute. “Our hope is to find a biomarker that would help us diagnose breast cancer quickly. We hope we can use microbiomics right before breast cancer forms and then prevent it with probiotics or antibiotics,” she added. The study examined the tissues of 78 patients who underwent mastectomy for invasive carcinoma or elective cosmetic breast surgery.
