Christopher Wray is new FBI chief
Wray, a veteran of George W. Bush’s Justice Dept., was confirmed by the Senate in a 92-to-5 vote IANS, WASHINGTON
C
hristopher Wray was sworn in as FBI director, taking the helm of the agency after its previous director, James Comey, was abruptly fired by President Donald Trump in May, the media reported. “It is the honor of a lifetime to serve as director,” Wray said in a statement after he was sworn in by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. “I long ago grew to know and admire the Federal Bureau of Investigation from my earliest days as a line prosecutor to my years as assistant attorney general. “I am excited, humbled, and grateful, therefore, to have this chance to work side-by-side again with these fine professionals for the good of the country and the cause of justice,” Wray said. After the swearing in, Sessions
US launches unarmed ICBM from California WASHINGTON: The US successfully launched an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from a military base in California to a Pacific atoll, the US Air Force Global Strike Command said in a statement. The unarmed Minuteman 3 missile was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, about 130 km northwest of Los Angeles, to the Kwajalein atoll across the Pacific, the New York Post reported. It was the fourth such test by the US this year amid growing tensions with North Korea, which last Friday launched its second ICBM. The US Air Force said the test was to check the readiness, effectiveness and accuracy of the weapons system. “While not a response to recent North Korean actions, the test demonstrates that the US’ nuclear enterprise is safe, secure, effective and ready to be able to deter, detect and defend against attacks on the United States and its allies,” the US Air Force statement said. Minuteman missiles are regularly tested with launches from Vandenberg. US President Donald Trump condemned Pyongyang’s July 28 missile launch and said that all necessary measures will be taken to protect his country and allies in the region. —IANS
US Senate rejects Trump’s efforts to repeal Obamacare WASHINGTON: The US Senate has rejected the Republicans’ latest alternate healthcare bill intended to repeal Obamacare, the media reported. Republican Arizona Senator John McCain cast the decisive vote to defeat the proposal, joining two other Republicans, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, in opposing it, reports The New York Times. The 49-to-51 vote was a huge setback for the majority leader, Mitch
said: “As a former federal prosecutor and head of the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Criminal Division, Chris Wray has successfully prosecuted terrorists, drug kingpins, and
McConnell of Kentucky, who has spent the last three months trying to devise a repeal bill that could win support from members of his caucus. The eight-page Senate bill, called the Health Care Freedom Act, was unveiled last week just hours before the vote. The “skinny” repeal bill would increase the number of people who are uninsured by 15 million next year compared with current law.
white-collar criminals and earned the respect of his colleagues at DOJ as well as bipartisan support from the Senate.” Wray, a veteran of George W.
Bush’s Justice Department, was confirmed by the Senate on Tuesday, in a 92-to-5 vote. During his confirmation hearing, Wray repeatedly pledged to act independently of the White House. He assured lawmakers that he had not taken an oath of loyalty to Trump, as Comey has alleged the President asked of him, and said he would adhere to the law and the Constitution. It was only the second time in history that a US Senator voted against a nominee for FBI director. The five “no” votes
‘US not seeking North Korea regime change’ IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has said that Washington does not seek to topple the Kim Jong-un regime in Pyongyang and is willing to sit down for talks with the country on the condition that it stops its pursuit of nuclear weapons. Tillerson made the remarks at
the US State Department on August 2 after North Korea tested its second intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on July 28, the Washington Post reported. “We do not seek a regime change, we do not seek a collapse of the regime, we do not seek an accelerated reunification of the peninsula, we do not seek an excuse to send our military north

were Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Ed Markey, Jeff Merkley, Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden, reports CNN. Comey, who was confirmed in 2013, received the only other opposing vote in history — Senator Rand Paul voted no after raising questions about how the agency was using surveillance drones on American soil. At Wray’s nomination debate earlier in the week, Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar said “this is a tough time to take this tough job.” you are presenting an unacceptable threat to us, and we have to respond’.” Tillerson added that the US hopes that “at some point”, North Korea will understand and sit down for a dialogue. The Secretary of State said the administration had been attempting to exert “peaceful pressure” on North Korea, “because the options available to us are limited, particularly if we think we are operating under a short period of time”. On July 29, the Kim Jong-un regime conducted its second ICBM test, in which the projectile flew for 47 minutes reaching a maximum altitude of 3,724.9 km before falling into the Sea of Japan.
US President Trump calls White House ‘real dump’ IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Donald Trump has called the White House a “real dump”, and said that he prefers staying at his own properties rather than at the executive mansion, a media report said this week. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the account, which appeared on the website Golf.com. The hotelier-turned-POTUS reportedly told members of his Trump National Golf Course in Bedminster, New Jersey, that he

preferred staying at his own properties rather than at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, because the execu-

Trump, in a May interview with Time magazine, had praised the White House for its “beautiful kitchen”, “amazing” phone system and “incredible” historical furniture. “People have no idea the beauty of the White House. The real beauty of the White House,” Trump earlier said. Meanwhile, taking aim at the US President, former first daughter Chelsea Clinton, who spent most of her teen years as a White House resident spoke out in support of the White House staff, thanking the “ushers, butlers, maids, chefs, florists,” etc, for all the hard work they do.

RBI reduces key lending rate
The reduction in key lending rates comes after four consecutive policy reviews in which the apex bank had maintained status quo on its repo, or short-term lending rate since October 2016
Banks laud RBI’s rate cut decision
IANS, MUMBAI
S
ubdued inflation and demand prompted the RBI on Wednesday to reduce its key lending rate by 25 basis points (bps), which, however, failed to lift the sentiments of the business fraternity who felt a steeper cut would have been better. According to the Reserve Bank of India’s third bi-monthly monetary policy review of 2017-18, the repurchase rate, or the short-term lending rate for commercial banks, stands lowered to 6 percent from 6.25 percent. Subsequently, the reverse repurchase rate, or the short-term borrowing rate, has been adjusted to 5.75 percent from 6 percent. Consequent to the change in the repo rate, RBI said its Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate stands adjusted to 6.25 percent. The decision to reduce the repo rate was taken by the six-member Monetary Policy Committee
BRIEFS ED custody of Shabir Shah extended NEW DELHI: A court here on Thursday extended till August 9 the Enforcement Directorate’s custody of Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Shah in a money laundering case. Additional Sessions Judge Sidharth Sharma allowed the ED to quiz Shah for six more days after he was presented in the court on the expiry of his one-day custody. He was arrested from Srinagar on July 25 on charges of money laundering in a case dating back to 2005.
India for peace along China border NEW DELHI: As China struck a tough posture again on the Doklam stand off, India on Wednesday refused to be drawn into giving counter arguments, and merely said that it reaffirms its June 30 statement and called for peace and tranquility along the border. “India’s position on and related facts have been articulated in our press statement of June 30, 2017,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay said in response to a question. “India considers peace and tranquility in the India-China border areas as an important prerequisite for smooth development of our bilateral relations with China,” he said. —IANS

MUMBAI: Commercial banks on Wednesday lauded the Reserve Bank of India’s decision to cut key interest rates by 25 basis points as a move that would boost investor sentiments. “The RBI decision to cut repo rate was a welcome move and will perk up market sentiments.,” said Arundhati Bhattacharya, Chairman of the State Bank of India. “The prudent approach of the central bank in reacting to incoming data in a calibrated manner will reinforce the confidence amongst global investors. A number of regulatory and developmental measures like tri-party repo for corporate bonds and enhanced limits for foreign investors using the futures market have also been announced,” said Chanda Kochhar, MD and CEO, ICICI Bank.

The business fraternity felt that a steeper cut by the central bank would have been better. “Welcome, but too little. This rate cut was long called for, particularly as inflation is at record low and GDP growth has also lost some sheen,” said Harsh Pati Singhania, Director, J.K.Organization and Vice Chairman & Managing Director, JK Paper. “The 25 bps cut in repo rate is a welcome move. The current situation, however, warranted a steeper cut of 50 bps in the repo rate,” said Pankaj Patel, President, Ficci.

irtually giving up his national ambitions, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday said no one can take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and hailed the way he takes decisions which he felt would take the country forward. At a 75-minute press conference, he defended his decision to tie up
with the BJP ditching the RJD and the Congress and said his party will remain committed to the support already extended to opposition Vice President candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi. “I don’t think anyone is suitable for that. There is nobody who has the capacity to take on Modi,” Nitish Kumar said in reply to a question about the next general elections in which he has been speculated as a possible Prime

SRINAGAR: An Indian Army Major and a soldier were killed on Thursday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district in an ambush by the Hizbul Mujahideen, which earlier lost two of its men to security forces in Kulgam district, officials said. The Hizbul claimed responsibility for the attack on an Army patrol in Zaipora village which left Major Kamlesh Pandey, Sepoy Tanzin and Sepoy Kripal Singh injured. Earlier, two Hizbul militants were killed by the security forces in Gopalpora village in Kulgam district.
Kumar claimed the party was united. He dismissed as hypothetical questions about the JD-U joining the union cabinet. He was critical of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi’s remarks that he knew three months ago that the JD-U would tie up with the BJP in Bihar and asked if that was so then why did he not stop it. “If he knew it then he should have told me. When I decided to support (NDA Presidential candidate Ram Nath) Kovind I told them. I spoke to Rahul over the corruption charges against RJD leaders and asked him to suggest ways to come out of that so that I can speak outside.”

The mistakes Nitish has made In the wake of the corruption charges against Lalu Prasad and his family, Nitish should have called for fresh elections to retain his trustworthiness, and convey that sleaze does not work AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
N
itish Kumar may have won the trust vote in the Bihar legislature, but he is now weaker than what he was during his earlier stint as the Chief Minister. At that time, he had become a larger than life figure because of his success in controlling lawlessness in the state and preparing the ground for development. As a result, he was even seen as a possible player on the national stage. But that aura is gone. The reason is his journey from the “communal” to the “secular” camp and back. Had he moved in only one direction, he would have appeared more straightforward than at present. But trips back and forth tend to undermine a politician’s credibility. He is seen as an opportunist on the lookout for the best chance. If he had wanted to retain his trustworthiness in the wake of the corruption charges against Lalu Prasad and his family, he should have called for fresh elections. That would have been a message to Lalu Prasad as well, for it would have shown him — as well as other politicians — that sleaze doesn’t pay. As it is, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief is barred from contesting elections because of his conviction in the fodder scam.
Nitish Kumar’s latest maneuver may well turn out to be his third political mistake. The first was in 2013 when he hurriedly quit the BJP because he feared that Modi’s rise will erode his Muslim support base.
But switching sides within two years of securing a mandate has put Nitish Kumar in the lowly category of the Congress MLAs in Gujarat who have been lured away to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by the indefatigable Narendra Modi-Amit Shah duo. Nitish Kumar’s latest maneuver may well turn out to be his third political mistake. The first was in 2013 when he hurriedly quit the
BJP because he feared that Modi’s rise will erode his Muslim support base. As long as Modi did not venture out of Gujarat, Nitish Kumar was happy in the BJP in the company of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L.K. Advani. But Modi’s entry into the big league unnerved him. So he ran from the rock of a changing BJP to the hard place of his old friend of the days of the JP movement, Lalu Prasad. This was
his second mistake, for he ignored the possibility that the hero/villain of the RJD’s “jungle raj” in Bihar may ultimately be his nemesis. And so it has proved to be. But the way out for Nitish Kumar was not to retrace his steps, for he has gone back to the same person from whom he ran away four years ago. If the Bihar Chief Minister was afraid in 2013 that Modi would scare away the Muslims, he
should harbour the same fear now when the rampaging gau rakshaks have become a frightening menace for the minorities. True, Modi of 2017 is not the Modi of 2002, when he was called a “modern day Nero” by the Supreme Court, because he has been speaking out against the cow vigilantes. Modi has also succeeded in putting an end to the ghar wapsi and love jehad campaigns. But how far the BJP has changed with its veneration for the holy cow and its belief in the therapeutic value of cow’s urine is open to question. Nitish Kumar is teaming up, thus, with a party whose pursuit of Hindutva and ultra-nationalism is far more aggressive at present than in the time of Vajpayee and Advani. Politically, too, the BJP believes that the future belongs to it mainly because of its spectacular success in UP. Now, Nitish Kumar’s floor-crossing will convince the BJP that the Hindi heartland is firmly in its grip. It is unlikely, therefore, that it will allow Nitish Kumar to call the shots as before. Instead, the Modi dispensation may placate him with a special financial package for Bihar. Latest events have shown that Nitish Kumar's destiny is to be a provincial politician, remaining confined like his friend-cum-foe Lalu Prasad, in Bihar.
The umpteen unnoticed voices of young Kashmir As the nation debates over Article 370, some voices claim that Kashmiri youth do not really care about the Article's fate VISHAV, NEW DELHI
T
here is no single voice of the Kashmiri youth like today’s popular media narrative seems to convey: the voice of the anti-India and pro-Pakistan slogans. But there are myriad voices — filled with anger, disappointment, even hatred — and even some filled with hope and eager to fulfil their young dreams and aspirations. There are voices like that of Insha Mir, the program lead of IEF Entrepreneurship Foundation, who seems to have come to terms with the idea that the Kashmir issue is beyond res-
olution and the youth need a “Plan B” to learn living with the conflict. There are voices like that of cultural entrepreneur Syed Mujtaba Rizvi, who is fed up with corruption in the Jammu and Kashmir administration and frequent internet shutdowns which are either driving young entrepreneurs out of Kashmir or holding them back from making something out of their lives. There are also voices like that of Shazia Bakshi, the co-head of Confederation of Indian Industry’s ‘International Engagements, Young Indians’, who describes herself as an Indian first and a Kash-

miri and a Muslim later, and asks why she has to prove her Indianness every single time she steps on to a platform. As the nation is debating the Article 370 (of the Indian constitution that gives the state a special status) and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti staunchly defends its retention, there are voices like that of journalist Samir Yasir, who says that Kashmiri youth
— who are fearless and no more scared of death — do not really care about the fate of Article 370. And then there are also voices like advocate Sheikh Sajjad, who feels that while Kashmiri youth see theirs to be a story of broken promises — both by Indian state and their own leadership — New Delhi also needs to introspect what is happening in its society or else it may lose Kashmir completely.
These were few voices at the “Understanding Kashmir” conclave held lately. In Kashmir, there are sounds of stones crashing into military vehicles and shields — and sometimes skulls — bullets being fired, the war cry of boys like Zakir Musa and Burhan Wani and the wailing of sons and daughters, brothers and sisters. Those are the sounds people in rest of India are more familiar with.

Trump’s immigration push The immigration overhaul seeks to slash by half the estimated 1 million green cards issued every year by eliminating several categories and bring in ‘merit-based’ system ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK
U
S President Donald Trump has endorsed a bill with far-reaching consequences for Indians that would drastically cut immigration to the US while boosting skilled immigration at the cost of extended family members and unskilled labor. The drastic immigration overhaul proposed by two Republican senators seeks to slash by half the estimated 1 million green cards issued every year by eliminating several categories and introduce a “merit-based” system that would be modeled on the Canadian and Australian immigration programmes, Trump said on Wednesday. my (RAISE) Act, the legislation, if passed, would end Green Cards for parents, adult children and brothers and sisters of citizens, a measure
that would affect immigration aspirants from India. For elderly parents of citizens, who would not qualify for Green
Cards, the legislation proposes giving them temporary renewable visas. Parents form a significant part of the immigration from India as their children firmly establish themselves in the US. “The reforms in the RAISE Act will help ensure that newcomers to our wonderful country will be assimilated, will succeed, and will achieve the American Dream,” Trump said at the White House where Senators Tom Cotton and David Perdue unveiled the bill. The RAISE Act “replaces our low-skilled system with a new points-based system for receiving a Green Card,” he said. “This competitive application process will favor applicants who can speak English, financially support themselves and their families, and demonstrate skills that will contribute to our economy.”

Amrinder Singh. On July 24, Akali Dal leader and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee General Secretary Manjinder S. Sirsa had brought the condition of Singh to her notice. Sushma Swaraj then directed the Indian Embassy in France to help Singh. “Amrinder’s family wishes to travel to France to save their son’s life as he is battling with blood infection,” Sirsa had tweeted. He had also shared a video by family members of Singh who he said was “having a tough time in France owing to health problems”.

BRIEFS Indian-origin charged with sex crimes SAN FRANCISCO: A Londonbased Indian-origin doctor has been formally charged with 118 sex crimes, including one involving a 13-year-old girl, police said. According to the London Metropolitan Police, Manish Shah, 47, allegedly assaulted at least 54 different victims at his practice in Havering in east London between June 2004 and July 2013, Efe news reported on August 3. The Met Police, who began to investigate accusations against Shah four years ago, said he will face court with 65 counts of sexual assault by penetration and 52 sexual assault allegations. The charge of sexually assaulting the minor will be prosecuted separately.
‘Syria has no information about missing Indians’ NEW DELHI: Syria has no information about the 39 Indians believed to have been taken captive by the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization, the country’s Ambassador Riad Kamel Abbas said on July 31. “As of now, we have no information about those missing Indians,” Abbas said while speaking about the situation in Syria at an event organized by the Observer Research Foundation think tank. “Whatever we know is what has been reported in the media.” He said the Syrian intelligence chief visited New Delhi recently and several officials from India’s Ministry of External Affairs have also visited Syria in connection with the case of the missing Indians. The 39 Indian construction workers, mostly from Punjab, had gone missing after the IS took control of the Iraqi city of Mosul in 2014. However, even after the liberation of Mosul in July by Iraqi forces, there are no signs of the missing Indians. —IANS
Turmeric can fight cancer in kids: US scientists K.S. JAYARAMAN, BENGALURU
M
edical scientists in the US have found yet another use for curcumin, the bioactive component of turmeric that is widely used in Indian cuisine, this time to cure cancer in children. Researchers at Nemours Children’s Hospital and the University of Central Florida (UCF) have found that nanoparticles loaded with curcumin can offer a novel treatment to target and destroy neuroblastoma tumor cells. Neuroblastoma is the most common cancer in children younger than five years old.
According to US scientists, turmeric can cure cancer in children.
High-risk neuroblastoma can be resistant to traditional therapy, and survival can be poor. The cancers start in early nerve cells and com-
monly form in the tissue of the adrenal glands, near the kidneys. They are also associated with developmental delays, hearing loss,
or other disabilities even after traditional treatments have ended. In their study, the researchers attached curcumin to cerium oxide nanoparticles and tested the nanocurcumin formulation in cell lines of a high-risk form of neuroblastoma. “This formulation induced substantial cell death in neuroblastoma cells while producing no or only minor toxicity in healthy cells,” says their report in the journal Nanoscale. Curcumin has been shown to have substantial anti-cancer ability, but its low solubility and poor stability have restricted its use in therapeutic applications. According to a statement from UCF, the study
conducted by its scientists demonstrates a novel method of treating this tumor “without the toxicity of aggressive therapy” and shows that nanoparticles can be “an effective delivery vehicle” for cancer drugs. “We are hopeful that in the future, nanoparticles can be utilised to personalize care to patients and reduce the late effects of therapy.” The fact that curcumin, when formulated as nanoparticles, is able to increase its bioavailability and thereby improve its therapeutic ability has earlier been shown by Indian scientists as well at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi in the case of tuberculosis (TB).

ML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Tuesday took oath as the 18th Prime Minister of Pakistan, after he swept the National Assembly election with a majority vote, five days after the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif by the Supreme Court. President Mamnoon Hussain administered oath to Abbasi, who secured 221 of 339 votes in the National Assembly. After winning the election, Abbasi said though he was the interim Prime Minister, he was not there just to “keep the seat warm”. Abbasi took oath of his office at a solemn ceremony, which had the armed forces chiefs, governors, members of the parliament, and prominent political and social figures in presence. In a ceremony broadcast live on state television, Khamenei gave his official approval for Rouhani, reports Xinhua news agency. Rouhani won a landslide victory on May 19 by garnering 57 per cent of the ballots. His conservative rival Ebrahim Raisi came second with 38.5 percent.
India, Pak end water talks in Washington WASHINGTON: Pakistan and India have concluded the muchdelayed water talks here “in a spirit of goodwill and cooperation”, raising hopes of avoiding further tensions over an issue with far-reaching consequences. “The Secretary-level discussions between India and Pakistan on the technical issues on the Indus Waters Treaty took place this week in a spirit of goodwill and cooperation,” the World Bank said in a statement. “The parties have agreed to continue discussions and reconvene in September in Washington,” it added. US sanctions ‘trade war’ on Russia IANS, MOSCOW
R
ussian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said the new sanctions imposed by the US are tantamount to declaring a “full-scale trade war” against Moscow and the administration demonstrated complete impotence in the most humiliating manner, the media reported. Writing on his Facebook page on Wednesday, Medvedev said the sanctions package “ends hopes for improving our relations with the new US administration”, reports the BBC. “The sanctions regime has been codified and will remain in effect

for decades unless a miracle happens.” US President Donald Trump had signed a sweeping sanctions measure that targets Russia, Iran and North Korea, the White House announced.
The US President’s signature on Wednesday came after some speculation that he could veto or not sign the legislation, which passed both chambers of Congress in overwhelming votes last week, CBS News reported. The law aims to punish Russia for its alleged meddling in the 2016 US elections, its actions in Ukraine and the annexation of the Crimean peninsula in 2014. Moscow - which denies interfering in the US presidential election - had already retaliated last week when Congress passed the bill, by expelling 755 people from the US embassy and consulates in Russia, the BBC reported.
Abbasi’s victory by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, the PML-N benches in the Lower House erupted with loud sloganeering in favor of Nawaz Sharif. Addressing the lower house after his victory was announced, Abbasi expressed his gratitude to everyone for the victory. Abbasi termed the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Panamagate case “unprecedented”, saying that although the party was blind-sided by the judgement, “we accepted it as it was”. “I will not go into details of Friday’s decision — I only want to say that there will soon be another court — one held by the people. There will be no JIT there,” he said, referring to the upcoming general elections in 2018. “I am sure that the real prime minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, will return to this seat,” Abbasi added.
N.Korea slams US for military threat PYONGYANG: North Korea on Thursday slammed the US for escalating military threat, the state-run KCNA news agency said. The US and South Korean military officials “openly stated that it will concentrate its latest strategic assets on the vicinity of the Korean peninsula in an explicit manifestation of its intention to carry out an armed attack on North Korea”, KCNA quoted a Foreign Ministry spokesman as saying. He added that the military threats included the US dispatching two of its B-1B strategic bombers into the air above the Korean peninsula to conduct aerial bombardment drills.

televised speech, reports CNN. “This constituent assembly is the hope of an entire country,” he said. All of ANC’S 545 members are supporters of the leftist leader. The ANC will replace the opposition-led National Assembly, and critics fear it will erode democracy and give rise to dictatorship. The opposition refused to take part in the Constituent Assembly election, considering it to be “fraudulent”. The election was held amid ongoing political and social upheaval in the country, where at least 121 people have been killed during anti-government protests that began on April 1.

India off to good start in 2nd Test The Indian openers batted with the run rate consistently hovering around the five per over IANS, COLOMBO

okesh Rahul celebrated his comeback with a half-century as India posted 101/1 at lunch on the first day of the second cricket Test against Sri lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club here this week. Rahul was batting on 52 with the in-form Cheteshwar Pujara unbeaten on 14 at the other end when the teams went in for the break. In-form opener Shikhar Dhawan was the only wicket to fall in the morning session. Dhawan made a quick 35 runs off 37 balls before being trapped leg before by offspinner Dilruwan Perera. Perara, the only successful bowler among the hosts so far, returned figures of 1/11 in his four overs. Shikhar Dhawan, who had narrowly missed out on the maiden double century of his career, seemed to be in excellent form here as well. Dhawan and fellow opener Lokesh Rahul handled the Lankan bowlers quite comfortably and saw India off to a superb start. Dhawan was a bit tentative in the opening over and enjoyed a reprieve when Lankan pacer Nuwan Pradeep managed to find his outside edge. The ball however, fell just wide of the slip cordon and went for
‘Confident about chances in IAAF’ LONDON: Jamaica’s Usain Bolt said he was pretty confident about his chances in the upcoming IAAF World Championships, which Usain Bolt will be his last competition before retiring. At a press conference, Bolt, who will run only 100 metres and 4×100 metres relay, said he would not have decided to compete if he were not sure about his chances, reports Efe. “If I show up at a championships you know I’m fully confident and ready to go” the world record holder in the 100 meters and 200 meters said. Bolt said that he was “really looking forward to watching first major 100m race as a spectator” after hanging up his boots.
Cricketers Harmanpreet, Pujara in Arjuna Awards list NEW DELHI: Cricketers Harmanpreet Kaur and Cheteshwar Pujara along with Paralympian Mariyappan Thangavelu were among 17 sportspersons who will be getting the prestigious Arjuna Awards this year. The decision was arrived at a meeting of the Arjuna Awards committee this week. Harmanpreet was rewarded for her performance at the recently concluded ICC Women’s World Cup. The experienced batter smashed an unbeaten 171 runs off just 115 balls to help India beat formidable Australia in the semi-finals.
That innings made Harmanpreet the record holder for the highest individual score for India at the women’s World Cup. It is also the secondhighest score by an Indian batter in women’s one-day internationals, behind Deepti Sharma’s 188. Pujara, who is currently playing his 50th Test match in Sri Lanka, has been in good form witth the bat in recent times. the first boundary of the match. The Delhi left-hander edged another delivery, this time off Rangana Herath in the second over, the ball falling short off the slip cordon once again. But he soon recovered his composure and made an excellent comeback by charging out of his crease to smash the fifth ball of the over into the stands. The Indian openers continued to bat comfortably with the run
rate consistently hovering around the five per over mark. Just like in the first Test, the Lankan bowling attack did not seem too formidable although the pitch had a slight bit of bounce. Dhawan who seemed set for a big score, fell off the first of the 11th over when he missed an attempted sweep and the ball straightened enough to hit him on the pads. The umpire had initially ruled not out but the Lankans decided to

call for the review and were rewarded when the third umpire overturned the decision. Pujara and Rahul however, ensured tha the visitors lost no more wickets til lunch. In-form India will look to inflict another defeat on Sri Lanka and
seal the three-Test series. India scripted a rampaging 304run victory in the first Test with opener Shikhar Dhawan making a strong case for himself with regular openers Lokesh Rahul and Murali Vijay, left out injured.

razil star forward Neymar has told Spanish football club Barcelona that he has decided to leave, the team has said. An official statement on Barça’s website said that the player, his father and his agent informed the team of the decision early in the morning at the club’s offices, before heading to the Joan Gamper sports city to bid farewell to his teammates who were involved in an official training session, reports Efe. “Faced with this position, the club has informed them they refer to the buy-out clause of his existing contract which, as of July 1, totals 222 million euros ($262.6 million), which will have to be deposited in its entirety,” the statement said. ated a ruckus, the House was briefly adjourned. When the House resumed at 12.30 p.m., Left members continued to protest and also trooped near the Speaker’s podium. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan initially denied permission to Karunakaran to speak again, saying it would lead to similar scenes of protest. She later permitted him to complete what he was saying. Karunakaran said CPI-M workers have also been attacked “in large numbers” in Kerala. Earlier this week, Vijayan held a meeting with the CPI-M and BJPRSS leaders following violence over the killing of an RSS worker and
announced an all-party meeting on August 6 to bring about peace. Addressing reporters after the hour-long meeting, Vijayan said peace talks were held in Kannur three months ago, but they failed to yield the desired result as violence again broke out in a few districts. “It was decided then that no violence should take place, but that did not happen in Kannur, Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam. Here the homes of councillors were attacked. The meeting condemned the attacks on the homes and the office of the BJP here. We will hold district-level peace talks and then on August 6 an all-party peace meeting will be held here,”
said Vijayan after the meeting at state-owned Mascot Hotel. Monday’s meeting comes a day after Vijayan was summoned by Kerala Governor P. Sathasivam in the wake of the deteriorating law and order situation following the murder of an RSS worker. The first to arrive for the meeting was state Bharatiya Janata Party President Kummanam Rajasekharan along with his team, including Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief P. Gopalan Kutty. Vijayan then arrived along with CPI-M state Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. Vijayan, upon arriving at the venue, lost his cool when he saw the media taking visuals of the meeting.
He directed his ire towards the manager of the hotel, and then while waiting at the entrance of the hall he asked the media to get out. Vijayan entered the hall only after all the media personnel had exited. When the media later asked why he was angry with them, Vijayan ignored their query. He explained the outcome of the meeting and left. Rajasekharan said the meeting went off well. “We explained our position, and stressed that the right to work in a political party should not be curbed,” he said. Vijayan earlier this week promised that action would be taken against law-breakers irrespective of their status and political affiliation.

Big hopes from ‘Jab...’
All eyes are now set on ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’, which has a “huge responsibility” of bringing much needed respite at the ticket windows with its release SANDEEP SHARMA, NEW DELHI
I
ts a “depressing” time for the Hindi film industry as Bollywood’s bigwigs like Salman Khan and Ranbir Kapoor have failed to translate their star power into promising box office collections. All eyes are now set on Shah Rukh Khan's Jab Harry Met Sejal, which has a “huge responsibility” of bringing much needed respite at the ticket windows with its release on August 4, say trade gurus. The Imtiaz Ali directorial is bringing back Shah Rukh in his romantic hero avatar after the intense Raees, along with his Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi co-star Anushka Sharma. While Salman's Tubelight couldn't light up the box office, Ranbir's Jagga Jasoos too evoked a lukewarm response. So far only films like Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Hindi Medium have done well,
Akshay Kumar's trials, tribulations in 'Toilet...' MUMBAI: Director Shree Narayan Singh says in his film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha actor Akshay Kumar's character is that of a man who undergoes trials and tribulations to win back his wife, played by actress Bhumi Pednekar. Singh says the forthcoming film is about how far a person would go to win their loved one. “Love is a strong emotion that can lead you to cross all hurdles,” Singh said in a statement.”It is such a film where Akshay is shown to be a man who undergoes all sorts of trials and tribulations to win back his wife Bhumi even if it is building a toilet.”
The story of the movie revolves around a Punjabi tour guide Harry, who helps Gujarati girl Sejal in finding her engagement ring.
and Lipstick Under My Burkha too has been attracting the audience since its release on July 21. So, hopes from Shah Rukh are really high, trade experts said. “We are hoping that Jab Harry Met Sejal will bring in some respite as the whole industry and the audience is eagerly waiting for this film. The mood in the industry is very
depressing right now because no major film is working at the box office,” film and trade business expert Girish Johar told IANS. “Shah Rukh is one of the biggest stars we have had in recent times. He has a very huge fan following, not only in India, but across the globe. Also, in this film he is coming back with Anushka, who is one
of the top talents of our country. The film has a very good director and good music. So, it is looking as something fresh at the box office,” he added. The film's team is tight-lipped about the number of screens it is due to release in globally, as well as its budget. But it has been shot in locations like Prague, Amsterdam, Vienna, Lisbon and Budapest, apart from Punjab. The story of the movie revolves around a Punjabi tour guide Harry, who helps Gujarati girl Sejal in finding her engagement ring. Delhi-based distributor Joginder Mahajan pointed out how Jab Harry Met Sejal will get a full week to prove its worth as it is not facing any clash at the box office, unlike Shah Rukh's last few films. In fact, Shah Rukh himself made a smart move by averting a clash with Akshay Kumar's much-awaited Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, due for release on August 11.

here when asked about the message that Secret Superstar carries for the society. The actor was present at the trailer launch of the film here on August 2. Aamir, a father of three, feels the Indian film industry must make more films for children. “We should make more films for children. This film (Secret Superstar is for youngsters, but isn't restricted to an age group. This is a family film... It has a wider scope. When our kids were younger, we used to show them foreign animated films which are only for kids. And that is definitely something we should do.”
BRIEFS Priyanka to work on show on Madhuri MUMBAI: Actress Priyanka Chopra says she cannot wait to begin work as executive producer of a comedy series about Bollywood's dancing diva Madhuri Dixit's life for US network ABC. Priyanka who has made her presence felt in Hollywood, took to Instagram to share her excitement about the project. “One of the favorite parts of my job is to be able to tell stories across genres, languages and to a varied audience. Today I'm happy to share with you another step I've taken on that creative journey, in my role as a producer. This particular story is one of a few Hollywood projects that I am currently developing,” Priyanka wrote.
Dilip Kumar in hospital, stable
MUMBAI: Legendary actor Dilip Kumar was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital on August 2 evening after he suffered dehydration, hospital sources said. “He was admitted with dehydration. He is stable,” Ravishankar, CEO of the facility at Bandra West, told IANS. The 94-year-old actor, who has been weak and ailing due to agerelated problems in recent years, was accompanied by his wife Saira Banu. He had been running a fever for two days, a family friend, Udaya Tara Nayar, told IANS. Last seen on the big screen in Qila in 1998, the actor was honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015. —IANS
‘Indu Sarkar’: Must be seen, not just for Kulhari’s performance
M
aybe it’s too early here to mention Kirti Kulhari’s indomitable brilliance in this grossly mis-reviewed film. But then, considering she has given what is arguably the most outstanding performance by a female protagonist since Tabu in Chandni Bar and has even gone further than Tabu in some sequences, this is as good a time as any to bring up her climactic court scene where she tells the spellbound judge (he wears the same expression that I did) how her life changed one day when she took the wrong turn and ended up watching the ravages caused by the Congress regime at Turkman Gate.
Film: ‘Indu Sarkar’; Director: Madhur Bhandarkar; Starring Kirti Kulhari, Tota Roy Choudhary, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Rating: **** When Kirti speaks of serendipity her character Indu (I will ignore the cheap thrills of ambiguity afforded by her full name) does not know what that words means. It is that innocence regarding her destiny but her determination to do the right thing in life is what makes Kirti so memorable as Indu Sarkar, a woman, a wife, a rebel and an underground activist who does
The film is shot by Japanese cinematographer Keiko Nakahara in sharp sepia tones that suggest both nostalgia and decadence.
what she does because well someone has to stand up and speak against injustice during the time of
political gagging so massive India became Indira. Or else!
That Indu stammers serves as befitting metaphor for a nation gone dumb with servility. Happily Bhandarkar who has so far made a career out of exposing the peccadilloes of the glamorous elite, moves into political territory with reasonable confidence. The way he builds up the dread and sometimes unintended humor of the Emergency is remarkable. The film’s politics, though at times simplistic and half-baked, and in spite of Neil Nitin Mukesh’s atrocious hamming as a Sanjay Gandhi doppelganger, works very well for the protagonist’s journey from the dutiful housewife to the beautiful rebel without a pause.

B’day: What Sood wished
‘Kids doing drugs worries me’
I
n wake of a major drug bust earlier this month in Hyderabad, actor Rana Daggubati said it worries him and its really dangerous to know that school children have been involved in this racket. The Telangana Prohibition and Excise Department had seized 700 dots of LSD worth Rs 20 lakh and 35gm of MDMA — commonly known as Ecstasy — worth Rs 1.4 lakh from three peddlers.
O
n his 42nd birthday on Sunday, actor Sonu Sood says he only wished he had achieved more success in his life earlier when his mother could see it happen. Asked if he had to change something in his life, what would it be, Sonu told IANS: “I wish if I could have achieved more success in my life earlier when my mom could see that happen, she could have seen those movies, could see the success rate that happened after I lost her.” The Dabangg actor says the only regret that he always has in his life is “whatever I achieve, how much ever I achieve, my parents are not there with me”. Is it going to be a working birthday for Sonu? “Yes, I will be travelling at the time of my birthday. I am planning a huge event in Abu Dhabi for a cause, so I believe it’s a good day to start with doing something for others. That’s how I will be celebrating my birthday this year.”
The month-long investigation brought to light the drug trade in Hyderabad, which involves Tollywood stars and MNC professionals. Commenting on the drug bust scenario, Rana told IANS: “Honestly, the whole thing has been blown out of proportion. If a filmmaker or an actor takes drugs, it really doesn’t bother me. They are adults and it’s their lives and they can do whatever they want. I don’t give a damn if you take drugs.”

That was before Alia made her acting debut in Karan Johar’s 2012 directorial Student of the Year. “The first time I actually came out in the public before ‘Student of the Year’ released was for Manish’s couture show here in Delhi when Katrina was walking. “I was sitting in the audience and saying ‘Wow. One day, I want to be that person walking on the ramp,” Alia told reporters after she closed Malhotra’s India Couture Week (ICW) show.”

ctress Disha Patani, who is very new in Bollywood, says she is a very shy person and so, it has taken her time to get used to the limelight. “I am a very shy person. It has taken me time to get used to the limelight. It’s a part and parcel of being in the industry. However, I have no complaints. I consider myself extremely fortunate and I am more than happy for all the attention that I constantly garner,” Disha told IANS in an email interview. The actress, who made her Bollywood debut with M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, says that being a celebrity has its own complications and benefits.
A
ctress Shilpa Shetty, who walked for designer Monisha Jaising at India Couture Week (ICW) 2017, says that she did a lot of mistakes in her career an learnt a lot from them. “Style has to be very personal. I made lot of mistakes in my career but you learn. Experience is something that can not be brought and I love the fact that I have learnt from my own mistakes I have seen that, I went through it and I learnt,” Shilpa told reporters when asked that how her style has evolved over the years.

Just like his ancestors who were amongst the chief founders of Hindustani Music, in India, Hitendra Kumar Nayak, popularly known as Hitesh Master, chose to make music his primary vocation. His love for music and a passion to impart his knowledge did not restrict him to India, but also took him to Zambia and finally to Chicago, America, where he chose to settle down and continue the legacy of his forefathers.
MUSIC MAESTRO: CONTINUING A REGAL LEGACY
H
itesh Master today lives and works in Chicagoland with his musically inclined family. He conducts private music lessons for students interested in everything from learning harmonium to piano to Bollywood music to Hindustani Classical. Master also travels all across the US to perform all forms of music ranging from traditional Garba, Bhangra, Arangetram, devotional and classical music. He has also performed with Bollywood music personalities such as Kavita Krishnamoorthy, Bappi Lahiri, Mahendra Kapoor, Suresh Wadekar and Sadhna Sargam during concerts all over in US. Master, comes from an illustrious musical lineage and his forefathers were Raj Gayaks in princely states in India during the 16th century. It was the time when music in India was at its pinnacle with the likes of Tansen performing in emperor Akbar’s court and Raj Gayaks were given the highest honor. And even though the era of nawabs and true connoisseurs of unadulterated forms of music is long gone even in India, Master chose to stick to his family tradition. Despite the fact that survival in the contemporary world practicing Hindustani music, especially in another continent away from India sounds more passionate than practical, Hitesh Master can be a befitting example of how musical legacy survives all odds. THE ROYAL FAMILY CONNECTION The Nayak clan to which Hitesh belongs is an honorary title given to people who learn music from their forefathers and are experts in both practical and theoretical aspects of music. Hitesh who was born in the illustrious city of Nadiad in Gujarat, India, famous as the birthplace of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, was surrounded by musical traditions. Hiteshs’ father Pandit Vraj Lal Nayak
popularly known as VM Nayak was appointed as the Raj Gayak by Nawab Dilawar Khan of Junagarh in the princely court in Junagarah Palace in Gujarat, During the 1920’s his hallmark in classical music was so famous that he was also appointed as Raj Gayak by the then Maharaja of Udaipur and was also a Raj Gayak in Indore. Visibly nostalgic at the esteemed tradition in music that his family is blessed with, Hitesh shares, “My father Late Shri VM Master learnt music from eminent musical personalities such as Ustad Jhande Khan Sahab, Ustad Rajab Ali Khan of Devas Gharana in MP and Ustad Latif Khan Sahab of Beenkar Gharana.” Hitesh recalls, “During olden times too my father believed in understanding the basic tenets of music and he was awarded a masters degree in Lucknow. His quest to encourage youngsters to learn music was reflected in the fact that he was one amongst the people who stated Baroda Music College back in 1933.” Interestingly the Nayaks deeply entrenched musical tradition comes from a chain of their ancestors who were amongst the most sought after musicians in ancient India. Hiteshs’ great grandfather Pandit Vadilal Shivram Nayak was the Raj Gayak of Vasda state in Gujarat and the famous Jai Kishen in of Shankar Jaikishen fame learnt music from him. The Nayak clan was continuing the illustrious tradition until a sudden event led them to reestablish themselves. Talking about life in pre independence era India as seen and experienced by his father and their ancestors, Hitesh says, “The Raj Gayaks were extremely well paid and were regarded as highly respected members of the society. My father was fortunate to see that acclaim however post India’s independence when the princely states were abolished, the Raj Gayaks suddenly found themselves with no vocation. It was then that with the help of the Diwan of
Junagarh that my father was invited in Nadiad to settle down.” Continuing the emotional family story, Hitesh says, “Once in Nadiad my father had to find a new profession. However his love for music was so great that he did not desert it. He opened a music shop, took music lessons and began making harmoniums that he had learnt as a hobby. By now my father married and even though my mother never performed music as was the tradition amongst womenfolk during that time she took deep interest in music and helped in making harmoniums. Making a harmonium is a labor-intensive job, where you use pure teak wood and everything is handcrafted. It used to take up to one month to make a single harmonium.” He adds, “By now my parents had my elder brother and me and our sisters and we were all brought up with musical upbringing and everyday riyaaz was religiously followed in our household. However given his experiences where he had seen first hand how suddenly the most acclaimed musicians were left to look for survival he also instilled in us a need to study academics too.” Hitesh says, “Until my father passed away in 2006 in India, music remained the guiding force in his life.” BRINGING HINDUSTANI MUSIC TO AMERICA Talking about how he decided to come to the US and professionally pursue Hindustani music when not just the West but even the trend in India was leaning towards R&B, punk and rock, Hitesh says that moving to US was an organic process. He believes good and fundamental knowledge of music never goes waste. People may be going after fads but eventually if you have a solid musical background it sustains you. Talking about his musical upbringing he says, “Growing up

TODAY HE IS AMONGST A FEW INDIAN MUSICIANS IN AMERICA WHO ARE PRACTICING AND PROPAGATING HINDUSTANI CLASSICAL MUSIC TO A YOUNG GENERATION OF INDIANS AND AMERICANS WHO HAVE GROWN UP LISTENING TO ROCK AND JAZZ. I had the opportunity to learn from maestros themselves. People like Ustad Bashir Khan, many Raj Gayaks and Pandit Ram Baba Petiwala who was a Sant of that era used to visit our house in Nadiad. Post abolishment of princely estates many musicians had no work as music in that era was either listened by either the very rich or very poor. Often my father would arrange for house concerts for these musical geniuses who having no other place would stay with us for even months and as a gratitude began teaching us music. Hitesh

Udaipur then. During this time my brother Mahendra Nayak moved to Zambia and I too got an offer to teach music in an international university in Zambia. I taught music in Africa for 7 years and then when the situation in Africa too wasn’t that great I decided to move on. In 1997 I came to Chicago as my brotherin-law was here. I came to Chicago with the vision to practice music here too even though I knew it will be a challenge. Initially I found a great difficulty in establishing myself and worked in a gas station too. During this time I met Atul Soni who was a hobby singer and went on to become just like my brother. He offered me to live with him in Mundelein and after 2 years when I settled down I called my wife to join me. I began by taking music classes in Lake County and I also met the small Hindustani music community in Chicago. Chicago has been a great place to play
music as I met a lot of people from my hometown here who were eager to help. Hitesh who also heads the music group Orchestra Sa Re Ga Ma says that along with his group he has also dabbled in fusion and has performed jazz and raga together. Father to two grown up sons Chintu and Harsh he has also imparted his musical legacy to them. While Chintu is a professional musician and has created jingles for commercials Harsh is a singer but hasn’t started it professionally. Amongst his musical career highlights, Hitesh says are many but he loved being associated with the US edition of Zee TV’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa in 2009. As a member of audition team he traveled to NY, Dallas and in Chicago also conducted training in Dallas. Besides this he says, “When I get request from the younger generation Indians and also some Americans to learn traditional instruments such as harmonium, that is my greatest reward.”
WHEN I CAME IN 2000S I ALSO SAW AN EAGERNESS AMONGST INDIANS TO LEARN INDIAN MUSIC AS MOST INDIAN AMERICANS THAT HAD COME DURING 70’S AND 80’S WERE EITHER DOCTORS OR IN ACADEMICS AND THEY WERE LOOKING FOR A CREATIVE OUTLET FOR THEIR KIDS.

Profiles in grace and gratitude—from Dwarika to Munster
MUNSTER, IN- Dear Friends and family members, ur family is blessed with your presence and numerous messages of condolence, as we bid goodbye to my father Haridas D Barai who left for his Heavenly abode to be with Lord Krishna on July 25, 2017. We were blessed that he decided to move with us in Munster, after my mother passed away in 2008. He passed the exam and became US Citizen at the age of 90. As I reflect on his life of almost 95 years, I think about his legacy to us, values of life, education and a few Good Samaritans whose generosity made it possible for him and us. He was born in a very poor family in Dwarika in the western Indian state of Guiarat. My grandparents had a tiny piece of farming land. With droughts in that part of country, there was virtually no income and my grandfather worked in a grocery shop as a helper, supporting 5 children. My father was a top student in the High school in Dwarika and for helping the family, he used his mathematics skill to do book-keeping for the grocery shop. After graduating from the high school, he joined a science college in Baroda (renamed Vadodara), as Dwarika-Okha was part of the then Baroda State, under the Gaikwad rulers. My grandfather passed away when my father was in the second year of college. There was nobody to support the family and my father decided to leave the college and start looking for a job to support his mother and siblings. In order to feed the children at least once a day, my grandmother gradually sold all her ornaments and went hungry herself on many days, ultimately dying of nutritional cirrhosis. The owner of the grocery shop wanted to help out and offered to pay for his college education. But how to support the family ? Eventually, a Good-hearted Samaritan, Baba Sheth, as we called him, helped feed the family so that my father could complete his college education. My father went to Mumbai to get his graduate degree in Chemical Engineering but had no means to stay in dorms. My foi, his eldest sister, had just come to Mumbai as a refugee from Rangoon, Burma, fleeing the

raging 2nd World War between the British and the Japanese. They offered him a little space in the outside gallery to study and sleep, making it possible for him to become a chemical engineer. During this time, he got married and my mother worked hard to clean utensils as well as mill the grains (ghanti) of other households to support the family. The family struggled a lot but he got educated. With his chemical engineering degree, he quickly found a job with Alembic Chemicals in Baroda. There, we were blessed with another Good Samaritan, the late Shri Ramanbhai Amin, the Managing Director of Alembic Chemicals. My father worked directly under Mr Amin, who observed that my father was a hard worker, great organizer and able administrator. He appointed him as the head of his largest department, the Printing Press, that produced all support material for the company. Many politically-strong people tried to get him removed but Mr Amin was steadfast in his support. My father retired from that position and was appointed director of the newly-formed company: Light Publications Ltd. Talking about worth ethics, I had noticed as a little boy that my father will come home from office usually around 6.30 pm, 2 hours after the scheduled time, wrapping up his work and instructing the 2ndshift. Often, he will go back
to the factory around 8 pm, after the dinner and return late or even next day morning. And he had the distinction of having never taken a day of sick leave from work. There are many stories of his honesty, integrity and devotion to work that we learnt from his career and have guided us in our lives. We are grateful to these and many other good people who helped our parents and grandparents during their very difficult struggle. We will emulate them to help others who are not so fortunate! We are grateful to Dr Maniar for taking care of his Parkinsons for the past few years, and Dr Harish Shah, his cardiologist and our dear friend. I would like to thank countless friends and family members who have pitched in supporting us in a variety of ways: Suchita Shah, Anjali Joshi, Shahnaz Keshwani, Sanjay & Sonal Shah, Sonal & Pratish Patel, Bina & Rajit Shah, and his care-givers at home: Rameshbhai and Charuben Patel. The nurses at Community Hospital provided great care during his hospitalization 2 weeks ago. The greatest blessings will go to Panna, my best friend and life partner, who has done more than most to take care of my father for last 8 years. Our children, Sujata, Binita, Nikita and Chirag, loved Dadaji so much and all came to take care of him, not to speak of our grandchildren who always enjoyed his company, taking turns to feed him when he was able to eat a bit. My brother Jayant and his wife Uma also regularly visited him from NJ. There is never a time to lose your parents. Even at the age of 94, he would wait in the family room sofa till I came home late night and only then go to him room to sleep. I will miss that shelter! My eternal gratitude to my parents, who struggled so much to raise us, educate us and set an example for us. We will miss them but hope that they will continue to bless us from their heavenly abode! From: Bharat H Barai Panna B Barai
Man held for filming couple’s activity
Maninder Adama
BY A STAFF WRITER REMONT, CA -- A Fremont, Calif., man was arrested on July 27 for allegedly filming his roommates having sex, and then attempting to extort cash from them by threatening to release the videotape on social media and to the couple’s parents. Indian American Maninder Adama, 33, was held on $80,000 bail, which he posted over the weekend. He is charged with multiple counts of felony extortion and multiple misdemeanor counts related to invasion of privacy for the recording of the victims. Adama and his wife had split one of the bedrooms in their apartment into two bedrooms, which they shared with another Indian couple they found on Craigslist. The victim couple lived with the Adamas from mid-March to the end of April, when they moved out of the area. Sometime during that period, Adama allegedly set up his laptop to record the couple having sex, but made the device look as though it had been turned off. The police said Adama was able to record a three-hour videotape of the couple’s sexual activity.

Brahmotsava at Sri Balaji Temple BY A STAFF WRITER URORA, IL – Brahmotsava, a nine-day religious festival, is being planned from August 4 to August 12 at Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Temple in Aurora, IL. The celebrations will include daily Homams and Utsavams. A Community Health Fair will be held on August 5 at the Temple Panchavati with entry only for registered devotees. The Annual Picnic, a fun-filled day for the entire family, is scheduled for August 6, with fun and games for children, volleyball and chess tournaments, and a variety of delicious food prepared at the Temple. As for Brahmotsava, the popular Indian scriptures trace the origin of this function to Lord Brahma, the creator God as the conductor of the Utsavam to Sri Balaji in Tirupathi. Brahma performed this function on the banks of the holy river Pushkarani in Tirupathi in appreciation of Sri Balaji’s grace for protecting the mankind. Hence, this Utsavam bears its popular name as ‘Brahmotsavam’. This auspicious function is celebrated for Sri Balaji at Aurora, similar to the traditions of Tirupati temple. During the nine days, every evening, Sri Balaji Utsava Murthi is taken on Utsavams (processions) with splendid different decorations on different Vahanas (chariots) on the serene outdoor premises of the temple. On the concluding day, August 13, a

grand Sri Srinivasa Kalyanotsavam (wedding ceremony) is also planned. The Brahmotsavam celebration provides a unique opportunity for devotees to participate in the festivities and Utsavams and experience the ‘Vaikuntha Anubhavam’ (‘heavenly enjoyment and feeling’) and receive the blessings of Sri Venkateswara Swami. Vinayaka Chathurthi will be celebrated from August 23 to 26 with daily programs like special japam, homam, and abhishekam.
Events on August 26 will include Vidya Ganapathi Pooja in which children, under the guidance of the priests, will perform Ganapathi Pooja. Afterwards, they will pull the ‘Ratham’ (chariot) with Sri Ganesha around the temple grounds. Following this, Sri Vidya Ganapathi will be immersed (Visarjan), while children watch and chant Sri Ganesha’s bhajans, bidding Him farewell and pray Him to come back next year for Vinayaka Chathurthi.

COMMUNITY NEWS/EAST COAST of gun 35-yr jail for two for attacks on Jews Indianpartssmuggler is jailed 2
FRIDAY, 04 AUGUST, 2017
BY A STAFF WRITER ERSEY CITY, NJ -- Aakash Dalal and Anthony Graziano, the two Lodi men who terrorized the Jewish community in North Jersey with a string of arson attacks in 2011 and 2012, have been sentenced to 35 years in prison. The two were convicted last year of spraypainting anti-Semitic graffiti at synagogues in Maywood and Hackensack, attempting to burn down synagogues in Paramus and Rutherford and throwing Molotov cocktails into the Rutherford home of a rabbi between December 2011 and January 2012. Graziano was tried and found guilty of terrorism and 19 other counts in May. Dalal was also found guilty of terrorism and 16 other counts in November. The two were sentenced together on July 28 because they worked as partners, said Brian Sinclair, an assistant Bergen County prosecutor. The sentencing had to be moved to a larger courtroom in Hackensack to accommodate the overflow crowd of spectators, many of them from the Jewish community. Pessy Schuman, the ex-wife of the rabbi who was targeted in the Rutherford firebombing, implored Superior Court Judge Joseph Isabella to hand down a sentence that would say, “Never again in America, never again anywhere.” Pessy Schuman, Rabbi Neil Schuman,

their five children and two other family members were asleep when glass soda bottles with bandanna wicks and flammable liquid were hurled into their home next to Congregation Beth El on January 11, 2012. They awoke to flames that Schuman said she still sees in her nightmares. Graziano apologized to the Jewish community at the sentencing and asked the judge for leniency. His attorney, Ian Silvera, portrayed his client as a victim of brainwashing by Dalal, who, he said, was more sophisticated than Graziano and exerted control over his actions. Both men were 19 at the time of the attacks. Dalal did not make a statement during the sentencing. Sinclair said his silence spoke volumes about a lack of contrition.
The prosecution believes the two men would have continued their hate-fuelled rampage had they not been caught. Graziano and Dalal discussed plans to escalate their attacks, Sinclair said, with Dalal telling Graziano he would not trust him until he killed a Jew. The sentences were the same for both men: 32 years for terrorism, and 18 months for each of two bias intimidation charges. Paramus Rabbi Arthur Weiner said the month-long terrorism spree had a deep impact on the Jewish community and forced synagogues across the area to spend thousands of dollars on beefing up security. He saw the sentencing as a sign that the county and the state did not accept hate crimes and prosecuted those who perpetrated them.

Doc has fatal fall from Montreal mountain BY A STAFF WRITER YRACUSE, NY -- Shreyas Roy, a pediatric surgeon at Sainte-Justine Hospital in Montreal, Canada, who died in a tragic accident on July 23 in the city, is being remembered as a man who loved people. The Indian American surgeon, 38, a native of Syracuse, New York, who grew up in central New York, fell off a cliff on Mount Royal in Montreal and succumbed to his injuries. Roy was hiking on Mount Royal around 4 am with his partner Veronique Frasier. The couple had enjoyed a romantic evening with dinner out and fireworks celebrating the first anniversary of their relationship. They then went to the mountain where friends say Roy often jogged, walked his dog and hiked. There he lost his footing and fell into a
BY A STAFF WRITER HREVEPORT, LA -- An Indian national in the US on July 25 was sentenced to 30 months in jail for illegally selling silencers, used to reduce the sound of guns, and planning to smuggle more. Mohit Chauhan, 31, a resident of Pitampura in New Delhi, was also sentenced to three years of supervised release, the US Department of Justice said in a July 26 news release. The sentencing came after he pleaded guilty before US District Judge Elizabeth Foote in Louisiana to one count of dealing in firearms without a license. According to the guilty plea dated April 20, Chauhan was contacted by someone wishing to buy silencers. Chauhan discussed the manufacturing of silencers with the potential client by email and phone calls. He also discussed importing more silencers and parts by labelling them as ‘auto parts’ to evade US Customs. After they set up a meeting, he arrived in Shreveport, La., on December 1, 2016, to meet the buyer and brought silencer parts with him. He traveled to a restaurant in Louisiana’s Bossier City to discuss the sale details with the buyer. Agents recorded the meeting. According to the sources, Chauhan did not have any license to deal or conduct a business involving silencers and parts as required by the law.

BY A STAFF WRITER RIDGEPORT, CT -- A federal grand jury in Bridgeport has returned an indictment charging Dr. Bharat Patel with narcotics distribution, healthcare fraud and money laundering offenses. The US Department of Justice said in a news release that Patel, 70, of Milford, Ct., was arrested on a federal criminal complaint on July 12. Also charged was 47-year-old Dr. Ramil Mansourov of Darien, Ct. According to court documents, Patel and Mansourov are physicians who operated out of Norwalk, Ct.-based Family Health Urgent Care, previously known as Immediate Health Care, which was owned by Patel. Patel allegedly regularly provided prescriptions for narcotics, including oxycodone and hydrocodone, to patients that he knew were addicted or had been arrested for distributing or possessing controlled substances, it said. Patel also provided prescriptions to patients who paid him $100 in cash for each prescription and, in certain cases, Patel would write prescriptions for individuals who were not his patients in exchange for cash, the department said. When Patel was not available, Mansourov would conduct the illegal activity for him. The pair was among the 115 doctors, nurses and medical professionals charged in the nationwide crackdown which claimed $1.3 billion in false billings.

Sticker-like sensor that detects rape attempt BY A STAFF WRITER OSTON, MS -- An Indian American scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has developed a stickerlike wearable sensor that can detect sexual assault in real time and quickly alert nearby people as well as the victim’s friends and family to seek help. The sensor, which can be attached like a sticker to any piece of clothing, could be trained to learn the difference between when a person is undressing wilfully and when they are being forcefully disrobed, claims Manisha Mohan, research assistant at MIT. This allows the sensor to detect signs of an assault even when the victim is unconscious or not in the position to fight against the assaulter, such as in case of minors, bed-ridden patients or intoxicated people. An integrated bluetooth connected to a smartphone app can trigger a loud noise to alert people nearby and send out distress signals to predefined family members or emergency services. The sensor works in two modes: in the passive mode, the wearer is assumed to be conscious and can set off loud alarms or distress calls on their own by touching a button when they encounter an approaching threat; in the active mode, the sensor tries to detect signals

from the external environment. For example, if somebody is trying to remove the clothing off the victim’s body, a message is sent to the smartphone to confirm if the act was done with consent. If the victim does not respond within 30 seconds, the phone begins to emit a loud noise to alert the user and nearby people. If the victim does not stop this alarm using a pre-defined password within the next 20 seconds, the smartphone app can automatically
send distress signals to family or friends, along with the location of the victim. Mohan’s experience as an engineering student in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, inspired her to create the device. “Female students on campus were not allowed to work beyond certain hours. You were expected to be back in your dorm by 6:30 pm,” Mohan said. “Instead of asking them to remain indoors, I think we should provide more safety for them,” she said.
Gas station attendant is gunned down BY A STAFF WRITER ACRAMENTO, CA -- Simranjit Singh, 21, a gas station attendant hailing from Mohali in the Indian state of Punjab, has been killed by four bullet wounds to the chest. According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, an employee was cleaning up the parking lot around the station, and allegedly got into an altercation with three intoxicated men who were loitering on the premises. One of the men allegedly punched the employee, who went inside the station to call 911. Singh, who was in the parking lot, was then approached by the three men, one of whom shot him dead. Sheriff Department spokesman Sgt. Tony Turnbull said that there was no evidence to indicate the incident was a hate crime, or that suspects intended to rob the store. Singh was shot with a handgun multiple

Simranjit Singh times in the upper torso. The shooter had exited a vehicle in order to commit the crime. Alexander Lopez, 40, was arrested a day after the murder for his involvement in the shooting of Singh. He has been charged on an open count of murder and is being held at the Sacramento County Jail. He is ineligible for bail. Still at large are Rodolfo Zavala, 23, and Ramon Zavala, 15, also believed to be involved
in Singh’s murder. The Sheriff’s Department reports that both men are reportedly armed and dangerous. The police believe that Ramon Zavala is the shooter. Lopez is nevertheless being charged with an open count of murder. An open count of murder indicates that the degree of murder–first, second, or third degree–has not yet been decided. Singh’s co-worker Misbah said that the deceased victim was taking out boxes from the gas station convenience store to the trash area when he was approached by the three men. “Simran didn’t say one word to them,” said Misbah, who started working at the store about a year and a half ago, about the same time Singh started working there. “I don’t know why they killed him,” she said emotionally. Singh had just started to work the night shift about a month ago after enrolling for classes in engineering at nearby American River College. He leaves behind three sisters.

US scientists correct DNA in human embryos NEW YORK: In a first in the US, scientists using the 'CRISPR' genomeediting technique, have successfully corrected the DNA in human embryos that carried inherited diseases. The effort to create genetically modified human embryos was carried out by Shoukhrat Mitalipov from the Oregon Health and Science University and involved changing the DNA of
a large number of one-cell embryos, MIT Technology Review reported. "So far as I know, this will be the first study reported in the US," said Jun Wu, a collaborator at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, who played a role in the project. Mitalipov declined to comment on the results which, he said, are pending publication.
Bad air to cause more deaths
In the process termed "germline engineering", the scientists demonstrated that it is possible to safely and efficiently eradicate or correct defective genes that cause inherited diseases like the blood condition betathalassemia. As a result, any genetically modified child would then pass the changes on to subsequent generations via their own germ cells-the egg and sperm. Until now, three previous reports of editing human embryos were published in China. The earlier Chinese publications, although limited in scope, found 'CRISPR' caused editing errors and that the desired DNA changes were taken up not by all the cells.

For each model, the team assessed the projected changes in groundlevel air pollution that could be attributed to future climate change. They then overlaid these changes spatially on the global population, accounting for both population growth and expected changes in susceptibility to air pollution. Five out of eight models predicted there will be more premature deaths in 2030, and seven of nine models in 2100.
NEW YORK: Researchers have developed a new drug that may limit the progression of Parkinson’s disease while providing better symptom relief to people with the disease. Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are commonly managed using selective dopamine receptor agonists. While these drugs are useful in early-stage Parkinson’s, they tend to lose efficacy in later disease stages. In this study, the researchers employed a preclinical model of Parkinson’s disease to compare the effects of the dopamine agonist ropinirole to their new experimental drug, known as D-512. —IANS
Research suggests malaria Rising CO2 to affect 53 mn Indians treatment via homeopathy IANS, NEW YORK
MUMBAI: Homeopathy has shown the ability to treat malaria and vitiligo in lab models, says new research by Mumbai’s BMC-run BYL Nair Charitable Hospital and leading homoeopath Rajesh Shah. Shah, founder of Life Force Homeopathy, said the findings have been published in two reputed international peer-reviewed journals recently — the International Journal of Medical & Health Research and The European Journal of Pharmaceutical & Medical Research. He said that in lab experiments in BYL Nair Hospital, one of the oldest Chinese homoepathic medicines, China Officinalis, and one of the latest homoeopathic medicines, Plasmodia Falciparum Nosode, were evaluated for inhibition of hemozoin, indicating

their efficacy against malaria. “This path-breaking research has supported several fundamental principles of homoeopathy and opens windows to more scientific research in treating many dreaded diseases, like malaria and other infections,” Shah, who initiated these projects, told IANS. In the second experiment with Dr Renuka Munshi, homoeopathic medicines showed effectiveness against vitiligo, a dreaded skin disease.
he problem of protein deficiency is known to be widespread in India, and if carbon dioxide (CO2) levels continue to rise as projected, it may put an estimated 53 million people at new risk of consuming less than adequate dietary protein, a Harvard University study says. The findings published online in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, showed that humancaused carbon dioxide emissions lower the nutritional value of staple crops, increasing the risk for dietary deficiencies among the world's most vulnerable people. The populations of 18 countries may lose more than five per cent of their dietary protein by 2050 due to a decline in the nutritional value of rice, wheat, and other staple crops, according to the study.
India may lose 5.3% protein from standard diet as a result of rise in CO2 emissions.
The researchers found that India may lose 5.3 per cent of protein from a standard diet as a result of rise in CO2 emissions. "This study highlights the need for countries that are most at risk to actively monitor their populations' nutritional sufficiency, and,
more fundamentally, the need for countries to curb human-caused CO2 emissions," said Samuel Myers of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Globally, 76 per cent of the population derives most of their daily protein from plants.
