‘Trump speakes like a 6th grader’ The study by Carnegie Mellon University’s Language Technologies Institute suggests that Trump tends to lag behind most presidential candidates when it comes to using words and grammar IANS, NEW YORK

Nikki Haley now backs Ted Cruz

R

epublican presidential hopeful Donald Trump may have mesmerized his fans with provocative speeches but researchers have found that in terms of use of words and grammar, he can be compared to a sixth grader. Most presidential candidates in the US are using words and grammar typical of students in grades six to eight, though Donald Trump tends to lag behind the others, the study said. For the study, the researchers at Carnegie Mellon University's Language Technologies Institute (LTI) did a readability analysis of presidential candidate speeches. A historical review of their word and grammar use suggests that all five candidates in the analysis — Republicans Trump, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio (who has since suspended his campaign), and Democrats Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders — have been using simpler language as the campaigns have progressed, the researchers said.

BRIEFS: State of disaster declared in Texas WASHINGTON: A state of disaster was declared in the US state of Texas after it was hit by huge rains resulting in floods, the media reported on March 15. The state of disaster that was declared by Texas Governor Greg Abbott on March 14, covers nearly 20 counties including Angelina, Harrison, Liberty and Madison. The Texas governor said the state is assisting with evacuations in three Texas counties and stands ready to assist in swift water rescues.

New sanctions slapped on North Korea WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama has issued an executive order imposing new sanctions on North Korea, the media reported on March 17. The White House on March 16 announced the “robust new sanctions” are part of its response to the North Korea’s January 6 nuclear test and February 7 ballistic missile launch. The executive order blocks certain transactions on property belonging to the North Korean government and to the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea.

Again, Trump is an outlier, with his grammar use spiking in his Iowa Caucus concession speech and his word and grammar use plummeting again during his Nevada Caucus victory speech, according to the study. A comparison of the candidates with previous presidents showed president Abraham Lincoln outpacing them all, boasting grammar

at the 11th grade level, while president George W. Bush's fifth grade grammar was below even that of Trump. “Assessing the readability of campaign speeches is a little tricky because most measures are geared to the written word, yet text is very different from the spoken word,” said one of the researchers Maxine Eskenazi in an official statement.

WASHINGTON: With her favored candidate Marco Rubio dropping out of the presidential race, South Carolina’s Indian-American Governor Nikki Haley is now hoping for “solid and strong” Ted Cruz to stop Republican front-runner Donald Trump. “My hope and my prayer is that Senator Cruz can pull through this and that he can push through and really get to where he needs to go,” she told reporters in Columbia, the state capital. “Because we do want a strong leader, we do want somebody that’s

“When we speak, we usually use less structured language with shorter sentences,” Eskenazi noted. The researchers used a readability model called REAP, which looks at how often words and grammatical constructs are used at each grade level. Based on vocabulary, campaign trail speeches by past and present presidents — Lincoln, Reagan, Bill

conservative, we do want somebody that’s actionminded. So we’ll see what happens.” Haley said her Nikki Haley prayers fall short of formally endorsing Cruz but would like to see the Texas senator succeed. She suggested Cruz’s path to nomination lies with his disciplined and concerted campaign, but she doesn’t think Ohio Governor John Kasich has much of a chance.

Clinton, George W. Bush and Obama — were at least on the eighth grade level, while the current candidates ranged from Trump's seventh grade level vocabulary to Sanders' 10th grade level. In terms of grammar, the current candidates generally had scores between sixth and seventh grades, with Trump just below sixth grade level, the study said.

The partnership among the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), governments, nonprofits, and private sector companies was launched at the recent COP-21 climate summit in Paris by World Bank president Jim Yong Kim and IMF managing director Christine Lagarde. The CPLC coalition includes over 90 business and strategic partners as well as more than 20 governments, ranging from Germany and France, to Mexico and Chile, to Ethiopia and Morocco. The announcement was made on March 14 in Mumbai, during the World Bank’s Corporate Carbon Pricing Leadership Workshop, according to a media release from New Haven, Connecticut based university. Two recent Yale graduate and undergraduate students who work on Yale’s Carbon Charge Project, Jennifer Milikowsky and Ryan Laemel, gave presentations at this

workshop as well as at the India Climate Policy and Business Conclave in New Delhi on March 15. “Universities have a critical role to play in offering leadership, teaching, and research expertise to help develop effective climate change solutions,” said Yale President Peter Salovey. “It has been an honor to work

V

eteran Pakistani politician and former minister Syeda Abida Hussain, who has also served as her country’s ambassador to the US, feels that India-Pakistan relations are unlikely to improve any time soon as Modi “would lose his hardcore supporters if he makes gestures of friendliness” towards Pakistan. “Modi stands for Hindutva and he is a right wing hardliner. It is unlikely that India-Pakistan relations will improve in any meaningful way. Though Sharif is quite genuine in seeking better relations with India, it is not reciprocal,” Hussain said in an interview to IANS here. Abida Hussain, who served as a minister in the Nawaz Sharif government from 1996 to 1999, also dismissed proposals like joint governance in Kashmir, put forward by former Pakistan foreign minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri in his recent book. “It’s a ridiculous proposal to try

Six places where you can enjoy Holi with verve KAVITA BAJELI-DATT, NEW DELHI

T

he unusually warm winter is melting into summer and falling, as usual, in the cusp of this yearly weather transition is Holi, a heady festival of colour and laughter. If you love the sights, sound and colours of Holi, then travel to some of the most spectacular places in India where it is still celebrated in deeply traditional manner. Here’s a list of six such places where Holi celebrations are still full of verve and vigour. Lath Mar Holi, Barsana, Uttar Pradesh: It’s one place on earth where people from all corners want to be in during the festival. No wonder — Govardhan, Barsana and Nandgaon — are the most visited places. The festival is popular here because of the way it is celebrated. Nandgaon village with sticks, in what’s known as Lathmar (stickbeating) celebrations. Lathmar Holi takes place around a week before the main day of Holi. It’s worth going to Barsana a couple of days in advance so that you can also experience the Laddoo Holi festivities there. Sweets are thrown around

and spiritual songs related to Radha and Krishna are sung. Basant Utsav, Purulia, West Bengal: This is a three-day folk festival where you’ll get to sing and play Holi with the locals, as well as enjoy a wide variety of folk art. This includes the remarkable chau dance, darbari jhumur, natua dance, and songs of West Bengal’s

wandering Baul musicians. What makes the festival special is that it’s organised by villagers as a way of helping sustain themselves. The location is around five to six hours by train from Kolkata. Hola Mohalla, Anandpur Sahib, Punjab: The best way to experience Holi the Sikh way is at Anandpur Sahib. During the festival of Hola Mohalla, it is enthralling to see Nihangs (Sikh warriors) in action on the banks of the Charan Ganga. Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib is one of the five temporal seats of the Sikh religion where lakhs of devotees visit during the three-day festival to seek the blessings of the Almighty. It is an extremely colourful festival where Nihangs dressed in their blue/saffron clothes engage in mock battles with their weapons before an extremely receptive crowds. This is a boon for photographers and for those who loves to experience an Indian religious cultural mela.

Traditional Holi at Mathura and Vrindavan: One must experience the festival in Mathura and Vrindavan and also pay a visit to the famous Banke-Bihari Temple. The crowd’s enthusiasm for their beloved Lord Krishna needs to be seen to be believed. In Vrindavan, the festival is celebrated for a week. Basantotsava, Santiniketan: This is one place that should be visited during the Spring Festival that falls during the Holi festivities. Students dress up in spring colours and stage a huge cultural program for visitors, including dancing to Rabindranath Tagore’s songs. This is followed by the usual exchange of colors. Royal Holi, Udaipur: The experience in this majestic place is of course royal. A day before Holi, which is celebrated as Holika Dahan, hundreds of pyres are lit all over the city. But the one at the Jagdish Temple is the biggest. The Holi experience here is grand.

Sri misses out on Obama nomination

Two Indian-Americans win first place in science contest

President Obama’s nominee Merrick Garland, a judge on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, is much older than Chandigarh-born Srinivasan ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

U

S President Barack Obama on March 16 chose a white judge over Indian American Sri Srinivasan as his nominee to the Supreme Court, setting up a dramatic political fight with Senate Republicans who have vowed to block his choice. Obama’s nominee Merrick Garland, 63, a judge on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, is much older than Chandigarh-born Srinivasan and other contenders on his short list such as judges Paul Watford and Jane Kelly. In a speech in the White House Rose Garden, Obama praised Garland, a graduate of Harvard and Harvard Law School and an appointee of president Bill Clinton as “one of America sharpest legal minds”. After conducting interviews last week, Obama is reported to have narrowed his list to include Srinivasan, Garland, and Watford, each of them considered “consensus” candidates for their history in gaining confirmation support from Republicans. But Senate Republicans do not plan to vet or have hearings on the nominee, and say the next president should be able to choose a replacement for justice Antonin Scalia who died last month.

Obama and Democrats argue that with 10 months left in his term, there is plenty of time for the Senate to take up and confirm a new justice. Garland’s supporters argue he is the nominee that the senators couldn’t refuse even in a contentious environment, according to CNN. “He’s the establishment of the establishment,” one backer was quoted as saying. Obama’s formal announcement came hours after

telling his supporters in an email: “I’ve made my decision.” “I’ve devoted a considerable amount of time and deliberation to this decision,” he wrote. “I’ve consulted with legal experts and people across the political spectrum, both inside and outside government. And we’ve reached out to every member of the Senate, who each have a responsibility to do their job and take this nomination just as seriously.”

NEW YORK: Breaking a three-year dry spell for Indian-Americans, two 17-year-old high school students have won the top prize of $150,000 with their medical-related projects in the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search contest, the society for Science and Public (SSP) announced on March 15. Although Indian-Americans have formed one of the largest ethnic contingents year after year at the contest and won several prizes, none had won the top prize since 2012 when Nithin Reddy Tumma received it for cancer research. Two of the $75,000 second prizes, and two of the $35,000 third place prizes this year were also bagged by Indian diaspora teenagers. Amol Punjabi won the First Place Medal of Distinction for basic research for developing a software that could help drug makers develop new therapies for cancer and heart disease. He is from Marlborough in Massachusetts. Maya Varma’s smartphone-based lung function analyzer won her the

Indian-American netizens favor Trump as US president PRASHANT KUMAR, NEW DELHI

I

ndian-Americans’ political preferences seem to be shifting in favor of the Republican Party, particularly Donald Trump, its front runner for the White House. According to social media trends, the US’s third largest ethnic group is overwhelmingly supporting Trump -- a billionaire real estate businessman-turned-politician who has courted many controversies ever since he jumped into the fray. Indians in the US have tradition-

ally been the vote bank for the Democrats. According to a study, as many as 65 percent of IndianAmericans leaned towards Democrats, making them the Asian-American subgroup most likely to identify with the party. But this time there has been a shift, arguably for the first time in the American electoral history. Several groups of Indian-Americans, a majority of them Hindus, have taken the social media route to voice their support for Trump. As the 2016 presidential election draws

closer, various online communities and pages have come up in support of the realtor. One such page on Facebook is “Hindus For Trump”. With around 750 “likes”, the page in its description says: “American Hindus are model citizens, educated and industrious. We want a responsible nation where Americans are both safe and free.”

The page portrays Trump as Hindu god Vishnu, making him seated on what looks like a lotus with “Om” written at its center. There is also a Political Action Committee (PAC), formed by leading Indian American businessmen to pool in support and contribution for an effective presidential campaign of Trump. PAC is a type of organization that pools campaign

All the Indian winners were in the research and innovation categories. Meena Jagadeesan of Naperville, Illinois, won the Second Place Medal of Distinction for basic research for her work in mathematics. Milind Jagota won the Second Place Medal of Distinction for Innovation. He is from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The two third place winners were Kunal Shroff and Kavya Ravichandran. Shroff of Great Falls, Virginia, discovered new relationships between the key protein associated with Huntington’s disease and the biological processes of cellular death that cause Huntington’s symptoms. contributions from members and donates those funds to campaign for or against candidates or legislations. Indian-Americans For Trump 2016, one of the PACs supporting Trump, is formed by the members of the American-Hindu community, including Sudhir Parikh, who is the advisory chair for the organization. Parikh is the owner of Parikh World Media, an umbrella corporation which houses news outlets influential among Hindus such as Desi Talk, the Indian American and the Gujarat Times. However, this is not the first presidential endorsement by Hindus for Trump. The Indian American Intellectuals Forum (IAIF) endorsed him for the White House in August 2015 in its widely-circulated “India World Geopolitics” newspaper. Indian-Americans are among the most highly educated racial or ethnic groups in the US, according to a Pew Research Centre study.

yanmar on March 15 elected U Htin Kyaw of the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party as its new president, the first civilian to lead the country after over 50 years of military rule, media reports said. “Today’s result is a triumph for (NLD leader) Aung San Suu Kyi,” The Myanmar Times quoted U Htin Kyaw, a 69-year-old academic and long-time aide of the Nobel laureate, as saying after the results were declared. U Htin Kyaw was elected with 360 votes while U Myint Swe from the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), who was directly assigned by the military, was elected first vice president with 213 votes. The appointed military bloc in parliament holds 166 seats, 25 percent of the total, while the militarybacked USDP has 41 seats in the

powerful bomb, detonated by a timing mechanism, ripped through a bus carrying government employees in Pakistan’s Peshawar on March 16, killing at least 16 people and causing injuries to another two dozen commuters. The attack took place on Peshawar’s Sunehri Masjid road after the bus picked up government employees from Shergarh in Mardan and was transporting them to work in the city. “The blast was caused by a timed-improvised explosive device (IED) planted in a tool box inside the bus,” Superintendent of Police (SP) Cantonment Kashif Zulfiqar said. “There were 40-50 people on the bus.” The bus was carrying employees of the Civil Secretariat and government officials coming

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 15 congratulated U Htin Kyaw on being elected Myanmar’s new president, saying both leaders will work together to strengthen bi-lateral relations. “Congratulations and best wishes to U Htin Kyaw on being elected president of Myanmar! Will work together to strengthen India-Myanmar ties,” Modi tweeted. He studied at the nowdefunct University of London Institute of Computer Science at the same time that Aung San Suu Kyi lived in London. She later became a student at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, while U Htin Kyaw returned to socialistera Mynamar, ruled by General Ne Win. Suu Kyi led the NLD to a landslide victory in last year’s November 8 general elections after decades of often brutal rule by Myanmar’s generals. Suu Kyi nominated U Htin Kyaw “obviously to show that he is the most trusted person for her”, Al Jazeera quoted Zaw Min, 48, a former NLD member as saying. “If this kind of person leads the country ... it will also affect positively on the people of this country,” he said.

istorians have uncovered secrets of England’s first printed Bible — one of only seven surviving copies and which is housed in London’s Lambeth Palace Library, a media report said. The discovery assumes significance in view of the revelations it made about hidden annotations, which were copied from the famous ‘Great Bible’ of Thomas Cromwell, seen as the epitome of the English Reformation. Written between 1539 and 1549, the annotations were covered and disguised with thick paper in 1600, sciencedaily.com reported. The secrets hidden in the Lambeth Library copy were revealed during research by Eyal Poleg, historian from Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). “We know virtually nothing about this unique Bible — whose preface was written by King Henry VIII of England himself — outside of the surviving copies. At first, the Lambeth copy first appeared completely ‘clean’. But upon closer inspection I noticed that heavy paper had been pasted over blank parts of the book. The challenge was how to uncover the annotations without damaging the book,” Poleg explained. Poleg sought the assistance of Graham Davis, a specialist in 3D Xray imaging at QMUL. Using a

light sheet, which was slid beneath the pages, they took two images in long exposure -- one with the light sheet on and one with it off. The first image showed all the annotations, scrambled with the printed text. The second picture showed only the printed text. Davis then wrote a novel piece of software to subtract the second image from the first, leaving a clear picture of the annotations. According to Poleg, the presence of annotations supports the idea that the Reformation was a gradual process rather than a single, transformative event. The annotations were written during the most tumultuous years of King Henry VIII’s reign.

n an attempt to recover dues from business tycoon Vijay Mallya, the State Bank of India on March 17 initiated e-auction of the grounded Kingfisher Airlines (KFA) headquarters Kingfisher House and other movable assets, officials said here. The prime property Kingfisher House, situated near the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport,

measures around 17,000 sq feet and is being auctioned with a base price of Rs.150 crore. A banner inviting bids for the e-auction was put up outside the building. Bids can be submitted till April 4. The actual auction will take place on April 6. Besides, e-auction has been initiated for selling nine high-end cars like two Honda City EXi, a Honda Civic, two Toyota Camry, a Toyota Innova, a Toyota Corolla, a Hyundai Elantra and a Hyundai

Dalit who married upper caste girl killed in TN CHENNAI: Police on March 13 detained four of the suspects accused of hacking to death a young Dalit man who married an upper caste girl, who herself narrowly survived the brutal assault in a Tamil Nadu town. Political parties denounced the chilling murder of V. Sankar, 23, in Udumalaipettai town in Tirupur district on March 12 afternoon and what they said was the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. Sankar had married Kausalya, 19, who is from the politically influential Thevar community, eight months ago. CCTV visuals showed about six men attack Sankar, a third year engineering student, with sickles and machetes when he and Kausalya were walking on a crowded street. The killers apparently came on two motorcycles and appeared to have been shadowing the couple. Before escaping, the killers also thrashed the young woman, leaving her badly wounded. But she miraculously survived. Sankar bled to death on his way to a hospital.

The attack was witnessed by scores of people, many of whom stood frozen by terror. Others fled the scene, police officials said. Speaking from her hospital bed, a dazed Kausalya blamed her own family for the cold-blooded murder. Her father C. Gopalasamy surrendered in a court, saying he was scared and not because he was involved with the killing in any way. He was remanded in judicial custody till March 21 and taken to the Central Jail in Madurai. Sankar’s family said he and his wife had just finished shopping when they were targeted. Police said Kausalya’s family was unhappy over her marriage outside the caste. Kausalya told a Tamil news channel that she would be able to identify the killers. She said she and her husband were threatened earlier too by a few men. She blamed her parents for the murder. Velu Samy, the distraught father of Sankar, alleged that Kausalya was abducted by her parents once and locked up in their house. It was only after a police case was filed that she was allowed to return to her husband.

Santro Zip. Other movable assets up for grabs include office furniture and fittings, air-conditioners and other items in the Kingfisher House. The e-auction is being carried out jointly by SBICAPS Trustee Co Ltd, a subsidiary of SBI Caps through AuctionTiger. Mallya owes around Rs.9,000 crore to SBI and a consortium of 17 Indian banks and the Kingfisher House was acquired by SBI a year ago in a bid to recover its dues.

NEW DELHI: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on March 17 declined specific comment if his government considered industrialist Vijay Mallya an absconder but sought to assure that every penny that is due from him to state-run banks will be recovered. Answering a specific question at the India Today conclave on Mallya, who is said to owe Rs.9,000 crore to 17 banks, most of them in the state sector, the finance minister said every agency in India, be it for enforcement or investigation, was on the job regarding the case. “The facts are very clear: Every government agency will take strong action against him. Banks will go all out to recover every single penny,” Jaitley said about Mallya who left the country earlier this month amid charges of wilful default on bank loans worth thousands of crores. Even as Jaitley was speaking, a

consortium led by the State Bank of India was preparing for the auction of Mallya’s Kingfisher House at Jogeshwari in Mumbai, in a bid to recover a part of the the nearly Rs.7,000 crore debt due from the now grounded Kingfisher Airlines alone.

Kerala hamlet finds place on global sanitation map IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

P

ulluvila, a sleepy hamlet located close to the airport here, has earned a place for itself on the global sanitation map — it boasts of the world’s first eToilet which also uses technology that turns waste into fertilizer, generates power and even makes potable water. Since January, a local churchrun school here is successfully hosting a pilot project where over 150 students use two eToilets that have incorporated technology developed by the University of South Florida (USF) called NEWgenerator — with NEW standing for nutrients, energy and water. This is the first time that the award-winning automated electronic toilet, or eToilet — developed by local firm Eram Scientific Solutions using a Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation grant — has been married to the NEWgen technology, also funded by grants from the foundation. Eram’s eToilets see the convergence of electronics, mechanical,

web-mobile technologies to control the entry, usage, cleaning, exit and remote monitoring of the toilet. And NEWgen is a machine in a box that recycles water, harvests energy, creates fertilizers and, ultimately, turns waste into profit. In simple terms, said Anvar Sadath, CEO of Eram, what NEWGen does is to process the entire waste from the two eToilets. “The water that comes out as waste from the toilets is recycled and goes back in and is used for flushing, while the solid waste is converted into nitrogen, phospho-

rus and potassium which can be stored and used as fertilizers. The gas from urine is converted into methane and can be used for burning,” Sadath told IANS. The eToilet itself is revolutionary. A coin opens the door for the user and switches on a light — thus saving energy — and directs the person with audio commands. It is programmed to flush 1.5 liters of water after three minutes of usage or 4.5 liters if usage is longer. They are also programmed to clean the platform with a complete wash down after 10 or so uses.

‘Rohit’s filmmaking tips helped me’

‘Sardaar Gabbar Singh’ to release in Hindi

"Rohit’s experience as an actor and simple filmmaking suggestions really helped in delivering the desired output" IANS, CHENNAI

D

irector Kumar Nagendra says actor Nara Rohit’s filmmaking knowledge came in very handy during the making of forthcoming Telugu sports drama Tuntari, which releases in theatres on March 11. “Rohit is a very knowledgeable actor. His experience as an actor and simple filmmaking suggestions really helped in delivering the desired output,” Nagendra told IANS. In the film, Rohit plays a boxer. “Rohit has watched several Hollywood-based boxing films and was aware of how they treat this subject. When we were shooting the boxing sequences, he suggested that we avoid using bright lights, and when we saw the final output,

I was thrilled,” he said. While Rohit did not need to undergo any physical transformation for his role, he had to get trained in boxing. “He had to be trained for a week. Although he plays an amateur boxer, we wanted the fights to have some level of authenticity,” said Nagendra, adding that Rohit worked really hard. “If Pokkiri brought out a side in Mahesh Babu that nobody had seen, Tuntari will bring out something similar in Rohit, whose body language and dialogue delivery will stand out and become one of the highlights of the film,” he said. The film is the official remake of Tamil blockbuster Maan Karate. According to Nagendra, the remake will be even more gripping than the original.

Car is real hero of Sawaari, says director IANS, CHENNAI

D

ebutant director Guhan Senniappan says the vintage Contessa car, which plays a pivotal role in forthcoming Tamil road thriller “Sawaari”, is the real hero of the film, which is slated for release on March 18. “This is a road thriller featuring three contradicting characters - a cop, a psycho and a driver - that are headed to different destinations on this journey. The real hero of our film is the Contessa car,” Guhan told IANS. While it was usually available in white or cream colors, the makers chose a black color Contessa for the shoot.

“We thought black would be an interesting choice, given that this is a thriller,” he said, adding that shooting in the car was very challenging. “Most of the story unfolds on

the road, inside the car, and the shooting part was very challenging. At all times, the car features three characters and hence, there wasn’t any room left for another person to sit with a camera and shoot,”

Guhan said. The camera was attached to the car and the actors had to deal with the shot. “When the car moves, the camera would roll and the actors would call the shot. If a shot didn’t go well, we had to reshoot it from the beginning,” he added. The other challenge was to shoot in the forest, which was inundated with wildlife. “The film was planned to be shot at night, but we couldn’t because we were shooting in the dense forest where wild elephants were known to loiter, so we had to shoot only during the day,” said Guhan, who guarantees the film has elements to appeal to all sections of the audiences.

‘Taapsee not part of Nikhil Siddhartha’s next’ IANS, CHENNAI

D

irector Vi Anand has refuted rumors that actress Taapsee Pannu has been roped in as the third heroine in his yet-untitled Telugu romantic drama, which features actor Nikhil Siddhartha as the male lead. “Contrary to some reports, Taapsee is not the third heroine of the film, which already features Avika Gor and Hebah Patel. In a week’s time, we should be able to finaliz e the next leading lady,”

Anand told IANS. While Anand admits that he was

“Contrary to some reports, Taapsee is not the third heroine of the film, which already features Avika Gor and Hebah Patel” initially in talks with Taapsee, things never fell in place.

The film is a love story with some fantasy elements and it features Nikhil in two different avatars. “It is a performance-oriented role. We were on the lookout for an actor who can play a youthful and trendy character. Nikhil perfectly fits the bill,” said Anand, adding that Nikhil is a versatile actor of the younger lot. Produced by Venkateswara Rao, the film has music by Sekhar Chandra.

MUMBAI: Pawan Kalyan-starrer Telugu actioner Sardaar Gabbar Singh, a sequel to the 2012 blockbuster Gabbar Singh, will be dubbed and released worldwide in Hindi too along with its Telugu version on April 8. “Sardaar Gabbar Singh has a universal story with a sensibility that should appeal to audiences pan India. Filmmaking cannot be confined to a certain area or demographics and our film attempts a unique connect with India, especially the Hindi belt,” Pawan said in a statement. Directed by Bobby, Pawan will be seen portraying the character of Gabbar Singh, a dashing maverick police officer, who is posted in the princely town of Rattanpur set on the border of Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. Sunil Lulla, managing director, Eros International, said: “With the enormous positive buzz and praise the film’s teaser promos have been receiving, we feel confident this film will have a wider appeal, including with the non-Telugu speaking audiences.” The film also stars Kajal Aggarwal, Sharad Kelkar and Kabir Duhan Singh.

Bollywood descends in Dubai The 25,000-seater Dubai International Stadium, Dubai Sports City, will play host to the main TOIFA night on March 18 IANS, DUBAI

T

he lights, cameras, stage and the stars are ready, just the action is about to begin! With the red carpet all set to be rolled out for a two-day celebration, beginning March 17, of the Times Of India Film Awards (TOIFA) 2016 here, Bollywood fans can expect a grand affair studded with stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh

Khan and Salman Khan, the organizers said. Popular names including Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Ranveer Singh too will be seen raising the celebrity quotient at the second edition of the gala, which celebrates Hindi cinema on foreign shores. The first edition of TOIFA was successfully held in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2013; and after a long break, it’s back to enthrall fans.

“It is going to be the biggest Bollywood event ever hosted in the Gulf region with performances and presence of some of the biggest Bollywood celebrities on one stage,” said Sameer Soni, director international business, The Times of India Group. The 25,000-seater Dubai International Stadium, Dubai Sports City, will play host to the main TOIFA night on Friday, and will feature some of Hindi filmdom’s

iconic stars and young guns on the red carpet, in the audience and on the stage. Lighting up the stage with their power-packed performances will also be Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Ranveer, Kareena and Yo Yo Honey Singh. Ranveer, a powerhouse of talent and energy, will be putting up a special tribute to Big B, wherein he will dance to some of the careerdefining songs from Amitabh’s life.

MUMBAI: Rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh, who was away from the limelight for over a year, will take to stage at the second edition of the Times of India Film Awards (TOIFA) in Dubai. He says he is looking forward to a possible interaction with superstar Salman Khan at the gala. The rapper has shared screen space with a string of A-listers like Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan, but has never got a chance to perform with the “Wanted” star. “I have performed with Shah Rukh bhai and Jacqueline Fernandez in the past, but not with Salman bhai. So I am looking forward to interacting with him along with my performance, if he is in the audience,” Singh said. The special evening will see actors Parineeti Chopra and Riteish Deshmukh as co-hosts.

ctress Kangana Ranaut’s lawyer says he sent a counter notice to actor Hrithik Roshan on behalf of his client as his demand that she tender a public apology to him for defamation is baseless. The controversy between the two actors, who were rumored to have been dating in the past, has taken an ugly turn with both of them slapping legal notices against each other. While Hrithik sent a legal notice to Kangana a few days ago for tarnishing his image, the actress’ lawyer Rizwan Siddiquee told IANS: “There was a notice sent by Hrithik’s lawyer. It was regarding the application of

baseless and useless notice. I sent a counter notice to them.” Siddiquee said that while Hrithik has claimed that he does not know Kangana socially, he has enough “substance” to prove otherwise.

cclaimed lyricist-writer Javed Akhtar’s powerful speech at the Rajya Sabha wherein he spoke uninhibitedly on issues of democracy and secularism has been lauded by members of the Hindi film fraternity. On March 16, Akhtar gave a

farewell speech and shared his experiences in the upper house during the past six years. He said: Javed Akhtar “Democracy and secularism, constitution and youth power, these are the advan-

tages India enjoys and they should not be frittered away.” He also indirectly took on AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi over his recent refusal to say “Bharat Mata ki Jai”. Rishi Kapoor: Wonderful Javed Akhtar Sahab! Agree with you. Hope people listen to your words and follow.

ollywood extravaganza, the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) celebrations, will return to Europe for the fourth time, with the scenic Madrid in Spain as the chosen destination this year. Actors Anil Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan and Sonakshi Sinha are already in Madrid to spread the ‘filmy’ fever. An official announcement was made at an event in Madrid later, and of what is seen from the Twitter handles of the three Bollywood stars, they are soaking in the colors and energy of the city and totally looking forward to a new celebration of Indian cinema on foreign shores. Hrithik has posted multiple images on his Twitter handle, and is seen looking casual yet dapper on a sunny day with Sonakshi and Anil. In one image, the “Krrish” star is also seen taking a selfie with a crowd that seems to be enthusiastic about the upcoming 17th edition of the gala, to be held in June 23-26. “Something about the IIFA Awards... The people, the places, the crew, the warmth. Love it. Everytime a special experience.

Madrid,” said Hrithik, who had extensively shot in Spain for “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”. Even Anil enjoyed himself as he roamed around the Market of San Miguel in Madrid. He tweeted: “Mercado San Miguel is an explosion of sounds, colors & textures... And the gorgeous street performers! IIFA 2016.” Anil even performed an impromptu jig on song “Gallan goodiyan” on the streets in Madrid.

Alia, Ranveer in mystery project

A

ctress Alia Bhatt has slipped into a taxi driver's garb, while Ranveer Singh is seen as a probable passenger of her car in images from a mystery project. They are said to be coming together for the first time for a project, details of which have been tightly kept under wraps. Wearing a pair of aviators and holding a glass of 'cutting chai', Alia sports the look of a taxi driver very well as she leans on a good old black and yellow taxi; while Ranveer, in his bespectacled avatar, looks every bit a simpleton as he sports oil-laden hair and has a bag on his shoulder. In another image, Alia sports a sweet and simple get-up in a maroon sari and a ponytailed look, and Ranveer flaunts a bright and funky leopard print jacket, with a mischievous smile on his face. One wonders what the project is about -but given that both the actors are quite a sensation in Bollywood, it will be interesting to know what they have paired up for.

"When you go to school with someone, and then you grow up, and both of us have the dream to act, and you end up acting with someone you've gone to school with, so it's really surreal. "From the first day till the last in between shots, I would be saying, 'Tiger, can you believe it, we are doing a film

together' and he would say, 'I can't believe it, Shraddha', so we were very excited to be working together," said Shraddha at the trailer launch of the film, directed by Sabbir Khan. The story is about Tiger's character Ronny, who is sent to an academy to learn a particular form of martial art, but doesn't show too much dedication and is more interested in wooing Shradda's character Sia. But when she gets abducted, he gets fully dedicated to the training to rescue his love.

Raja Krishnamoorthi races ahead C BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Small businessman Raja Krishnamoorthi of Schaumburg, who was an adviser in President Barack Obama’s 2008 poll campaign, is on

a roll. The 42-year-old India-born president of Sivananthan Labs and Episola Inc captured the Democratic nomination to replace US Rep. Tammy Duckworth in the House. Duckworth won the Democratic primary in the US state of Illinois to move up to the Senate on March 15. With 59 per cent of precincts counted in a three-way race, Raja had nearly 60 per cent of the vote, far ahead of state Sen. Michael Noland of Elgin with about 28 per cent and Villa Park village president Deborah Bullwinkel with 12 per cent. To represent the state’s 8th Congressional District, though, the winner of the Democratic primary still must overcome Republican Peter DiCianni. He is the DuPage County board member and former Elmhurst mayor who remained unopposed in the March 15 GOP primary for the seat being vacated by Duckworth. Raja said he knew little about DiCianni but noted the GOP ticket in the fall general election likely would be topped by Donald Trump —

Raja Krishnamoorthy

whose policies are “completely at odds with what the people of the 8th District want.” “Instead of buildings walls, we should be building bridges,” Raja, an immigrant, said in reference to Trump’s promise to build a wall at the US-Mexico border. DiCianni said he had the endorsements of 26 mayors and could win back the seat for the GOP. He said he stayed out of the presidential race. “Regardless of who wins for President, the race will be between him and I,” DiCianni said of Raja. Raja’s March 15 win came four years after he lost to Duckworth in a primary fight in the northwest suburban congressional district. Raja enjoyed a huge lead in fundraising over his two rivals in the March 15 election, reporting

a total of nearly $1.7 million in campaign contributions through February 24. That amount was more than four times the combined total raised by Noland and Bullwinkel. Raja was born in New Delhi but came to this country as an infant and grew up in Peoria. He has an engineering degree from Princeton University and a law degree from Harvard University. He worked for Illinois Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan and as a deputy state treasurer. But he lost in the 2012 primary in the 8th District and also failed in the 2011 Democratic primary for Illinois comptroller. “We won over a lot of folks who cast votes for Tammy Duckworth four years ago because we maintained a civil and respectful contest last time,” said Krishnamoorthi, who is He is a co-founder of InSPIRE, a non-profit organization that provides training in solar technology to inner-city students and veterans. Raja formerly was Vice-Chairman of the Illinois Innovation Council, whose mission is to promote innovative technologies that support economic growth and job creation. The Indian American and his family place a high priority on the value of education. His father is a professor of engineering at Bradley University

in Peoria. Raja earned his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in mechanical engineering from Princeton University and graduated with honors from Harvard Law School. Meanwhile, in another suburban congressional race, Republican US Rep. Peter Roskam was declared the winner over primary challenger Jay Kinzler. With 42 per cent of precincts reporting, Roskam had received nearly 70 per cent of the vote.Roskam has represented the 6th District since beating Duckworth for the seat vacated by veteran Congressman Henry Hyde in 2006. Also, in the 11th District, three Republicans were fighting a close battle for the right to try to unseat Democratic US Rep. Bill Foster in the November general election. With 79 per cent of the precincts counted, DuPage County board member Tonia Khouri of Aurora had inched ahead of Nick Stella, a doctor from Darien. Khouri had 37 per cent to Stella’s 36 per cent, while Herman White, a physicist from Naperville, was garnering about 26 per cent. In the 14th District, where Democrats were vying to win the nomination for the seat occupied by Republican US Rep. Randy Hultgren, salesman Jim Walz jumped out to an early lead.

St Louis teens create interfaith mural again

BY A STAFF WRITER T. LOUIS MO-- On March 6, teens from the St. Louis area created a unique mural of canned goods that will be on display at the Saint Louis Science Center through March 27. The teens, representing four faiths (Hindu, Muslim, Jewish and Christian), have taken their inspiration from Jerusalem, a giant screen film currently showing at the Saint Louis Science Center’s OMNIMAX® Theater. The structure, requiring 1,700 cans, is a bridge with supports representing the four faith groups being connected by concepts of interfaith cooperation to represent the theme of “Bridging the Gap though Conversation”. For the third year, the Center for Indian Cultural Education, also called the Bal Vihar of St. Louis, and Interfaith Quest

Additionally, seven teens from the Saint Louis Science Center’s YES (Youth Exploring Science) program participated in the project. This is the third year teens have collaborated on

an interfaith artwork at the Saint Louis Science Center. “One reason we create projects like this at Bal Vihar is to teach our youth the value of community service and to create a sense of oneness within our community. We especially love projects that we can share with our interfaith friends.” said Shoba Shekar, Community Projects Coordinator at Bal Vihar.

Maha Shivaratri fete at Hari Om Mandir

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- On March 7, devotees celebrated the festival of Maha Shivaratri, in the Hari Om Mandir, with great joy and enthusiasm. Thousands of devotees came to the shrine to perform the rituals and sing the glory of Lord Shiva. The temple authorities had made special arrangements to perform these Poojas at two stations. The Mandir Priest, Pandit Dinesh Kumar recited the holy Mantras and helped devotees to perform the special “Rudrabhishek Pooja” at the regular Shiv Darbar, which is also open every Monday. Another station was set up with a huge Brass Statue of Lord Shiva, the Shivling & Nandi raised on a tall pedestal, shining bright amidst lights, exhibiting His Glory, Charm and Might. The whole ambience of this set-up reminded people of the Heavenly Abode of Shiva on the Kailash Parbat. A special Bhajan Sandhya was organized in the evening, where two well-known singers of the Midwest region: Padmini and Uma Nath mesmerized the audiences with their soulful Bhajans. The president of the temple board, Vipan Wadhera, thanked his team members and the volunteers who had worked hard to make appropriate arrangements for this day. Priest Pandit Dinesh Kumar recited the Shiv Mantras nonstop, all day, did Poojas and helped the Bhakt Jan who came to the temple, to seek solace and peace in the lap of their Lord Shiva on this pious day of Maha Shivaratri.

Many steps taken for fair election BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- The March 15 Primary Election will nominate candidates to a variety of offices at the federal, state and local levels. In addition to party nominations, voters in all 50 wards will elect ward committeemen and delegates to the Republican and Democratic parties’ national nominating conventions. Because it is a primary election to nominate candidates for political parties, voters must declare a party affiliation. All wards will offer Democratic or Republican ballots. Only certain wards with committeeman contests and in the 5th Congressional District will offer Green Party ballots. There also will be a non-partisan ballot in the 29th Ward and certain precincts in the 32nd Ward, and these nonpartisan ballots will have only an advisory referendum, with no candidates. To ensure a trouble-free and fraud-free election, the Chicago Election Board will have more than 500 investigators assigned to Election Day duty. This will include roving investigators assigned to every ward who will be making unannounced inspections of polling places – and investigators who are assigned to respond to calls for assistance. Voters who witness anything irregular or encounter a problem on Election Day are urged to call the Board’s “Election Central” hotline at (312) 269-7870. These telephone lines will be staffed by Board personnel and attorneys versed in election law. “Election Central” hotlines will be operational on Election Day only. On Election Day, voters may cast ballots only at the polling place assigned to their home

Voter registration is made easier

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO. IL -- Voters may now (1) register to vote for the first time, or (2) file an address change, or (3) file a name change on Election Day at their home precinct polling place. To use Election Day Registration, a voter must go the precinct polling place for that voter’s home address and present two forms of ID, at least one of which shows the voter’s current address. New voters and those filing changes may find the correct precinct and polling place by entering their current home address only at www.chicagoelections.com if they live in Chicago. Those who are already registered may enter their last names, as well, to verify their voter status. “We have built our web site and set up our polling places to serve both the voters who are already registered and those who need Election Day Registration,” said Chicago Election Board Chairwoman Marisel A. Hernandez. “In each precinct, there will be two stations with electronic poll books: one for our voters who are already registered and another for our voters who come on Election Day to create or update their registration records.”

BY A STAFF WRITER ALITINE, IL -- A Sikh Community Outreach group organized a ParentChild, Youth-Adult counseling seminar at Sikh Religious Society Gurdwara in Palatine, Illinois on March 13 where 25 children and more than 30 adults participated. The topic of discussion was communication or lack thereof. “Bridging Communication Gaps across Generations” was an open dialogue between parents and children facilitated by Dr. Surinder Sucha Nand a psychologist, who taught at University of Illinois Chicago, and youth counselors Jasvir Kaur Singh and Maneshwar Singh. The purpose of the workshop was to explore the day and age we communicate today within families, how has it changed and is it effective? Blow-ups occur due to vagueness in communications which are mostly indirect and unclear and made at inappropriate timings without regard to other’s feelings or what’s going on in their lives at home, school or at work. The seminar opened with a short skit displaying in a humorous way the current state of communication between parents and children. When children come home from school, there is very little or no personal communication due to smart phones, lap tops, video games, TV, and closed doors. The cultural differences between parents who grew up in India and the way they were raised by their parents does not compare to the children growing up here and now which is creating issues. The control and punishment methods were also analyzed. “Then how do we pass on our heritage to our children growing up here?” asked one parent. “Teaching your values with great love and patience!” was the answer that emerged. Dr. Surinder Nand reviewed why the family nucleus is important and how we can improve our communication skills within our family. The participants learned about learning various styles of communication, how to be clear and direct as well as how to be good listeners. “When I come home and ask my dad or mom for something they are always busy on Face Book or watching their favorite Indian TV show,” said one child.

“The most important thing is to review our mailing or visit our website to get to the right precinct and polling place. Even if voters find themselves in the wrong polling place, poll workers will be able to use the electronic poll book to look up the correct precinct and polling place, and even text it to the voter’s phone.” To register to vote, you must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age by November 8, have lived in your precinct since February 14, and not claim the right to vote anywhere else.

Fun has gone from fashion, it’s more ruthless now: Rohit Bal NIVEDITA, NEW DELHI

H

is ensembles draw on history, fantasy and folklore and desired by discerning fashion aficionados around the globe. Ace designer Rohit Bal, who has completed 25 years in the industry, says the biggest shift over the years is in how the “fun” has gone out of the fashion world, which is now “ruthless and competitive”. “Everything has changed. I’ve seen it all happen and start. It’s like being a witness to the Big Bang. The explosion of stars into the universe (that) we call fashion. Now we are a full-fledged industry, almost ruthless and competitive. The fun has gone,” Bal told IANS in an interview. “Very few of us (are) left who do fashion because we love it. There is a big difference between being a fashion designer and someone who makes clothes just to sell them,” added the talent, who was among those who sowed the seeds of the Indian fashion industry, which is thriving nowadays. The industry has grown by leaps and bounds, but Bal misses the “friendship and warmth that was there once”. “I see more and more people running large scale factories rather than fashion houses. I miss the patronized feeling of fashion. I miss

the love, calm and fun,” stressed the alumnus of the prestigious St. Stephens College in Delhi. Often seen at most fashion events and parties, Bal now wishes

Very few of us (are) left who do fashion because we love it; there is a big difference between being a fashion designer and someone who makes clothes just to sell them he could have a quieter life and is working towards it. “Well, after reaching where I am, I really wish for a quiet life

absolutely needed and where I really want to go. No more social obligations,” said the designer, who is the finale designer at the

forthcoming edition of Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai. Bal worked in his family’s export business before launching his label in 1990. His distinct sense of style and eye for detail helped him stand out from the beginning. And he uninhibitedly credits his success to his originality. “For designers who do bridal couture, India still remains the most important market. There was no industry when I started. I am lucky that my designs have been appreciated and patronized since the beginning. I am lucky to have laid my own path and not follow

one. I am lucky to have done it my way,” he said, adding that the key to remain “relevant” after all these years is to be true to your art. “As life is becoming more complicated, designing clothes have become simpler. To me, fashion is art. When you experience it, all five senses should be elated. That is why I pay very close attention to every detail... To every music, choreography, ambience and set designing detail. “If you want to remain relevant it is very important to stay true to who you are. Just be you. Don’t try to be somebody else they already exist,” said Bal, who repeatedly draws inspiration from the rich culture of India. In his journey, Bal has not just showcased his creations at major fashion capitals, but even associated with international brands like Christian Louboutin, Conran Store, cosmetic giant Lancôme, Zippo lighters, Reid & Taylor, Outlander. He even runs his own restaurant named Veda. With patrons of his work spread across the world, he maintains that India is his “primary market”. “India has such a vast reservoir of heritage and craftsmanship that is yet to be explored and we have so many occasions one can cater to. For me, India was the primary market and always will be.”

Nightmares linked to suicidal thoughts, behavior: Study LONDON: Do you often experience frightening or unpleasant dreams? A new study has revealed that nightmares have been identified as a risk for suicidal thoughts, plans and attempts. Researchers claim this study to be the first to report the relationship between nightmares and suicidal behaviors that is partially mediated by a multi-step pathway via defeat, entrapment and hopelessness. Multiple analyses suggest that nightmares may act as a stressor in people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). "PTSD increases the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior and our

How alcohol ups breast cancer risk IANS, NEW YORK

D

rinking alcohol can put you at increased risk of breast cancer by enhancing the levels of a cancer-causing gene, new research has found. "Our research shows alcohol enhances the actions of estrogen in driving the growth of breast cancer cells and diminishes the effects of the cancer drug Tamoxifen on blocking estrogen by increasing the levels of a cancer-causing gene called BRAF," said one of the researchers Chin-Yo Lin, assistant professor at University of Houston in the US. The findings appeared in the journal PLOS ONE. The study objective was to determine how alcohol can affect the

actions of estrogen in breast cancer cells. They found that alcohol inappropriately promotes sustained expression of BRAF, even in the absence of estrogen, thereby mimicking or

enhancing the effects of estrogen in increasing the risk of breast cancer. Higher level of the female sex hormone estrogen is associated with greater breast cancer risk. Another key finding was that alcohol weakened Tamoxifen's ability to suppress the rapid growth of cancer cells. The findings suggest that exposure to alcohol may affect a number of cancer-related pathways and mechanisms. "We hope these and future findings will provide information and motivation to promote healthy behavioral choices, as well as potential targets for chemoprevention strategies to ultimately decrease breast cancer incidents and deaths within the next decade," Lin said.
