TOKYO: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday asked US President Barack Obama to investigate alleged spying by American security agencies on the government and corporate officials in Japan.

During a telephone conversation, Obama apologized over the suspected eavesdropping by the National Security Agency (NSA), Kyodo news agency quoted government spokesperson Yoshihide Suga as saying. Suga quoted Abe as telling Obama that if the spying allegations are "true, it could shake the trust between alliance partners", and that he has “no choice but to express our

grave concern”.

Towards the end of July, WikiLeaks had published documents that revealed NSA had been spying on the Japanese government and several firms since 2006, when Abe was first elected to power.

Besides the reports, WikiLeaks also published an NSA list containing 35 "high priority" Japanese targets for telephonic interception.

Muslims’ growth rate slightly up: Census IANS, NEW DELHI

he Muslim population in India registered a marginal growth of less than a percent to reach 172.2 million in 2011, while the Hindu population also declined by roughly the same to touch 966.3 million, according to census data on religion released on August 25.

The data on population by religious communities of census 2011, released by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, said Hindus constitute 79.8 percent and Muslims 14.2 percent of the population.

The overall growth rate of population from 2001 to 2011 was 17.7 percent, while community wise it was 24.6 percent for Muslims, 16.8 for Hindus, 15.5 percent for Christians, 8.4 for Sikhs, 6.1 percent for

Buddhists and 5.4 percent for Jains.

The data was released almost four years after the census, and comes just months before the assembly polls in Bihar.

Of the total population of 1.21 billion in 2011, Hindus were 966.3 million (79.8 percent), Muslims 172.2 million (14.2 percent), Chris-

tians 27.8 million (2.3 percent), Sikhs 20.8 million (1.7 percent), Buddhists 8.4 million (0.7 percent), Jains 4.5 million (0.4 percent), other religions and persuasions (ORP) 7.9 million (0.7 percent). The release said the proportion of Muslim population to total population in 2011 had increased by 0.8 percent.

“It is my appeal to my brothers and sisters that the occasion calls for a single mantra - peace. Each and every issue can be resolved through talks,” the prime minister said.

“We must work together to solve problems through talks and contribute in efforts to take Gujarat to new heights,” he said.

Adopting an aggressive stance, Patel had earlier served a 48-hour ultimate to the state government to concede to the PAAS demands, following which the agitation would be intensified.

As news of the police action on Patel spread, angry Patidars reacted violently, attacking public and private property, buses, vehicles, as Chief Minister Anandiben Patel’s appeal for peace went unheeded.

Overnight curfew imposed in many cities failed to deter the rioting mobs who were reacting to the Hardik’s detention and violence continued to spread.

India launches GSAT-6 satellite SRIHARIKOTA: India successfully launched its communication satellite GSAT-6, which has several strategic applications, in textbook style on Thursday using its heavy rocket geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV-D6).

The GSLV rocket, with a cryogenic engine, slung the satellite in a geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO) from where it would be taken up to its final geostationary orbit.

The successful flight of GSLV rocket gives the Indian space program a boost as getting the moreefficient cryogenic engine (which provides more thrust for every kilogram of propellant burnt) right is important for its future space programs.

Indian scientists have spent two decades in developing the cryogenic technology at a cost of Rs.4 billion.

It’s anybody’s game in Bihar

N

otwithstanding the cheers which Prime Minister Narendra Modi received while announcing the Rs.1.25 trillion special package for Bihar at an election rally, he will be making a mistake if he believes that the bonanza will ensure the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) runaway victory in the state assembly elections in October/November.

All that it can do is to bring about a marginal improvement in the BJP’s position, for the Indian voter

is far too canny to be easily swayed by promises. Moreover, the more extravagant they are, the more suspicious he will be. Besides, the voter is aware that the bounty is for Bihar, and not for any particular party.

So, irrespective of which alliance comes to power, whether it is the BJP-Lok Janshakti Party (LJP)Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP)Hindustan Awam Morcha (HAM) combination, or the Janata DalUnited (JD-U)-Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-Congress group, the gift will be available — unless the centre plays dirty. It isn’t the promise of funds, therefore, which will help the

BJP, but the latent fear among the voters of the return of what the party calls the “jungle raj” of RJD leader Lalu Prasad’s rule between 1990 and 2005.

Although, theoretically, Lalu Prasad is a junior partner in Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s government, the preponderance of the Yadavs in Bihar’s social scene — this caste group makes up 16 per cent of the state’s population — gives the RJD a clear edge in political terms.

The BJP is aware that the caste loyalties are so durable in Bihar that the backward caste base of the RJD and the JD-U will not be shaken.

What can cause a fissure, however, is the decision of Asaduddin Owaisi’s foray into Bihar politics because the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) leader may be able to chip away at the Muslim vote to the detriment of the JD-U-RJD-Congress alliance.

In that case, the vaunted MuslimYadav (MY) factor, which has been the key to Lalu Prasad’s success, may be strained.

As it is, the alliance suffered a minor blow when the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) walked out of it in protest against the allocation of three seats against its demand for

akistan’s decision to call off the NSA-level talks with India proves an old maxim for the people of Jammu and Kashmir: Whether the knife falls on the watermelon or the watermelon falls on the knife, it is the watermelon that gets cut.

There have been nearly 100 violations of the 2003 ceasefire by Pakistan on the Line of Control (LoC) and the international border in Jammu and Kashmir since January 1.

Ten people have been killed in Pakistani firing and shelling in Jammu and Kashmir while Pakistan claims 10 people were killed in retaliatory Indian firing on their side of the divided Kashmir.

Kashmiris fear the rising tensions between India and Pakistan would reflect in more ceasefire violations on the borders. Whether or not the two countries allow border skir-

dling political constituencies intact, most mainstream political parties, especially those chiefly based in the Muslim majority Valley, have remained soft towards the separatists or at least ensure that they are seen to be so.

On this issue there was complete lack of coordination between New Delhi and Srinagar on the one hand and between the state police chief and the chief minister on the other. Who benefitted from the confusion?

Ironically, all that has happened in the process is that whether it was intended or not, the stature of Kashmiri separatist leaders has gone up. The decision to prevent their meeting with Sartaj Aziz finally resulted in Pakistan calling off the NSA talks. But there is no doubt about one outcome of the growing tension between India and Pakistan. Millions living in divided Kashmir must continue to lead an edgy, uncertain life.

Gandhi, who was preparing for the London marathon for over a year, got her period a day before the event. She had two options - to opt out of the first 26.2-mile race or run and let it flow.

She chose the second option. She ran the 41.195 km alongside two of her closest friends, completing the course in 4 hours 49 minutes, with her running pink pants stained.

Elijah Bell, a second-grade student at the Frazer Elementary in Stark county, Ohio, was born with bilateral atresia microtia — a rare birth defect where the outer ears are undeveloped.

But thanks to Ananth Murthy, director of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Akron Children’s Hospital, Elijah got a new pair re-constructed from his rib cartilage, Canton Representative reported this week.

The surgical feat has been reported across the US as a “miracle” because of the intricacies involved.

Besides five surgeries to create the ears — starting when Elijah was just four-year-old — Murthy had to use a skin graft from the boy’s thigh to create a gap between his ears and his head.

During a two-day visit to Iran, British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said on August 24 that he expected preparatory business negotiations to take place well ahead of the formal lifting of sanctions. Hammond met Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on August 24.

He arrived in the Iranian capital a day earlier to attend the reopening of the British embassy there after nearly four years. Iran also formally reopened its embassy in London.

The diplomatic moves follow a landmark nuclear agreement last month between Iran, the US and five other world powers. Hammond also said that Iran and the US could endorse the deal by October.

F CBI court to fast track Jagan trial HYDERABAD: A special CBI court has decided to speed up the trial in the cases of alleged quid pro quo investments involving YSR Congress president Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy and others by taking up the hearing for one entire day every week. The court decided to devote every Friday to expedite the hearing of the cases and discharge petitions filed by the accused.

The special court decided this when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) submitted a copy of August 10 order of Hyderabad High Court for speeding up the case.

A CBI counsel said the special court decided to devote a full day every week to expedite the case.

The high court had issued directions while hearing a PIL filed by Y. Vedavyas, an advocate from Vijayawada, who wanted that the hearing of cases involving Jagan and also other sitting MLAs and MPs under Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 be expedited.

Trisha plays a 20-year-old in ‘Nayaki’ CHENNAI: Director Govi says southern actress Trisha Krishnan will be seen essaying a role much younger than her real self in the upcoming Tamil-Telugu horror-comedy Nayaki.

He said she will be portraying a 20year-old character in the film.

“Trisha will be seen playing a 20year-old. She has been preparing herself to look much younger over the last couple of months,” Govi told IANS. For her role, Trisha, who is in her early 30s, also lost some weight.

fter working with her in 2008 film “Race”, Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan has teamed up with Katrina Kaif for upcoming political thriller ‘Phantom’. He says not much has changed about her, especially her commitment and dedication to her work.

Asked about Katrina’s performance in the film, Saif said: “It was very good.

We are working together after ‘Race’ (2008). She is still the same... very passionate about her work and is quite committed.”

California DMV employees traded cash for licenses

BY A STAFF WRITER ACRAMENTO, CA -- As many as 100 commercial truck drivers paid up to $5,000 each to bribe state Department of Motor Vehicles employees for illegal California licenses, federal authorities said.

Up to 23 traffic accidents could be related to the fraud, though there were no fatalities.

Emma Klem, a 45-year-old Salinas DMV employee, and trucking school owner Kulwinder Dosanjh Singh, 58, of Turlock, both pleaded guilty on August 11 to conspiracy to commit bribery and identity fraud, US Attorney Benjamin Wagner said.

Two other DMV employees in Salinas and Sacramento and two other Central Valley trucking school operators have been arrested on similar charges.

Court records say the employees changed computer records to falsely show that drivers had passed written and behind-the-wheel tests after they were bribed by the owners of three truck-driving schools between June 2011 and March 2015.

“Individuals who use their positions to obtain commercial drivers’ licenses for unskilled and untested drivers jeopardize our nation’s security and safety. Allowing unqualified drivers to operate heavy commercial trucks on our highways is honestly quite chilling,’’ said Carol Webster, acting assistant special agent in charge of the US Homeland Security Investigations office in Sacramento.

DMV examiners Andrew Kimura, 30, of Sacramento, and Robert Turchin, 65, of Salinas, were indicted earlier this month on charges of conspiracy, bribery and fraud in connection with identification documents, along with trucking school owners Pavitar Dosangh Singh, 55, of Sacramento, and Mangal Gill, 55, of San Ramon.

Pavitar Singh and Kimura have pleaded not guilty, while Turchin and Gill were arraigned on August 14 in US District Court in Sacramento.

The inspiring book documents a 14-year journey between Dr. Kalam and Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the fifth spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, who carries forward a legacy of enlightened gurus that goes back to the early nineteenth century.

The event was a tribute to Dr. Kalam’s lifetime of dedicated public service and varied contributions to India’s development as a country.

This celebration was a fund-raising event for the cultural center which is the center for not only the cultural activities of the people of Indian origin, but also for a variety of local ethnic groups.

Deadly virus threat in McHenry County

BY A STAFF WRITER cHENRY COUNTY, IL -Mosquito batches recently collected in northwest suburban Nunda Township and Lake in the Hills have tested positive for West Nile virus.

These batches were collected on July 31 and August 6, and are the first to test positive for the virus in McHenry County in 2015, said officials in a statement.

McHenry County Department of Health officials tested 311 mosquito batches as of August 18, but all other batches have tested negative for West Nile virus.

The department will continue to collect and test mosquito batches until mid-October, but the risk of West Nile virus remains until the first frost.

Health officials say those infected by the virus experience fever, headache and body aches, but serious illnesses, like meningitis and death, are possible. People over 50 have the highest risk of severe disease.

Officials told residents to use an insectrepellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants for more protection, and empty any standing water outside.

US may soon ease rules for F1 visa students

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- There is some good news for international students in the US as their government may allow F1 visa to be treated on par with H-1B visa, enabling them to work and stay in USA for 6 years after completion of their course.

Once implemented, this new rule will come into force after February 12, 2016.

If this happens, then the dependability on the ‘lottery’ of H-1B visa would be removed, and would pave way for more Indian students to work and stay.

Students under F1 visa (with course duration of at least 9 months) are allowed to work for 12 months in US after the completion of course; in case it’s a course in STEM streams (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), then they can stay for 24 months.

But after this, they need to apply for H-1B visa for continuing their job; and this is not a guarantee as due to soaring demand, their application may get rejected, even if their employers are sponsoring the student.

If the H-1B visa application fails, then the only option is to go back or start another educational course and then wait for the next 12 months to apply for the lottery.

Washington Alliance of Technology Workers (WATW), an association of US employees, filed a lawsuit against this decision.

On August 12, 2015, US District Court Judge Ellen Huvelle of the District of Columbia, while hearing this lawsuit, passed a ruling which may allow the students to work for more than 6 years under F1 visa.

Interestingly, WATW has actually won this lawsuit; but despite this loss, F1 students will get an advantage of extended stay due to a 7-year-old rule formulated by Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Seven years ago, DHS had proposed that F1 visa holders and H-1B visa holders should be treated equally in terms of job duration and stay.

However, DHS failed to make this notice as public and thus, as per US federal rules, DHS has been asked to implement the same within 6 months (that is February 12, 2016).

It is unlikely that DHS will ignore the court’s ruling as it can severely impact US tech industry as thousands of F1 visa workers, would be forced to return back to their native countries in the absence of H-1B visas.

Over 40 organizations were in attendance, ranging from large multinational companies to small- and medium-sized enterprises.

The event was hosted at the Art Institute of Chicago by Director Douglas Druiker. The Art Institute just completed a 4-year initiative with India’s Ministry of Culture to expand the program of Indian Arts.

GalacTech advances in Gandhi Cultural Center Moonbots Challenge marks 25th anniversary

BY A STAFF WRITER ANTA ANA, CA -- The 2015 MOONBOTS Challenge is an international online competition that challenges youth aged between 8 and 17 years to form a team (2-4 members) to design, create and program their own robots.

The competition is divided into two phases.

In Phase One, teams submitted a short video or written story about what inspires them about the Moon, from old tales to the potential of lunar exploration. Thirty teams were selected by a panel of experts to move onto the next stage: In Phase Two, teams receive a robotics kit of their choice: LEGO® INDSTORMS® EV3, VEX IQ Superkit or MECCANO Meccanoid G15 KS to create their own robot to rove on a simulated lunar landscape based on the story the team created in Phase One of the competition.

Teams are also asked to create and upload a video showing how they have demonstrated their MOONBOTS game to children and adults in their community.

Three Grand PRIZE winners will land a once-in-a-life time trip to Japan to meet with teams from all over the world competing in the Google Lunar XPRIZE. The MOONBOTS teams will learn how these Google Lunar XPRIZE teams are planning to reach the Moon with their innovative robotic technology.

of GalacTech Getaways, a lunar tourism company powered by Team GalacTechs. They have made it to Phase 2 of this competition and are conducting their public outreach initiatives currently.

They did a fantastic demo at the Columbia Memorial Space Center and donated two of the VEX IQ kits to this wonderful establishment in Downey, CA which is dedicated to teaching kids about STEM through space exploration.

The team is scheduled to have 3 more demos – one at Fairmont School in Anaheim, CA, another one at the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Ana where they will be donating two more kits, and the third at Oso Grande Elementary school where one of the participants got his start at building robots.

These kids have worked hard all summer in building robots and missions that melt ice water, a conveyer belt, a zip line, and many other exciting things that will allow for travel to the moon easier and more efficient for all of us.

Team GalacTechs is made up of four future scientists with interests ranging from film-making, acting, 3D printing, math and robotics .

Nadia (11), Rayyan (10), Kamran (10) and Aleena (8) bonded over their love for space and their desire to explore the moon. For their inspirational tale, this fantastic foursome have envisioned a state-of-the-art, ‘Lunar Resort’ (i.e., temperature-guided movable space camp) that will change the face of space travel forever.

Mahatma Gandhi Cultural Center celebrated its 25th anniversary on August 8. The Consul General of Chicago consulate office, Dr. Ausaf Sayeed, graced the occasion as well as dignitaries from the St. Louis.

This celebration was a fund-raising event for the cultural center which is the center for not only the cultural activities of the people of Indian origin, but also for a variety of local ethnic groups.

Dr. Mahedra Partap, the president of the Board of Trustees of the center eluded to that effect and stressed on the importance of having such a center in the midst of the town. Missouri Senator Scott Sifton, who was introduced by Mr. Sreenu Dandamudi, an attorney at Law, delivered the key note address, in which he commended the services of Mahatma Gandhi Center and the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi to the world.

Dr. Dundoo Raghunandan, a founding member, briefly presented the history of the center followed by the financial report by Dr. Vijaya Kumar Buddhiraju.

Donations came from Gujarati Samaj, Telugu Association, Malayalee Association, etc. Many Individuals like Dr. Kamal Yadav who is also founder like Drs Partap and Dundoo, made contributions to sustain the center and its activities.

Dr. Sudhir Brahmbhatt who runs a school of Indian culture, called Balvihar, with over 300 children elaborated the role of the Center played for the promotion of the school.

The main founding members of the Center Drs. Uday and Ira Dash were recognized during the function.

The evening was very entertaining and was a successful event. The main auditorium for the event was decorated by the members of Telugu Association.

India Assoc. of St Louis celebrates I-Day in style

BY A STAFF WRITER T LOUIS, MO -- India Association of St. Louis (IAS) celebrated India’s 69th Independence Day on August 15 at Mahatma Gandhi Cultural Centre (MGC) in a grand style keeping up its 47-yearold tradition.

The flag-hoisting, which was followed by the talks by invited special guests, was attended by a large number of Indians. As the flags were unfurled, American and Indian national anthems were passionately sung by all present.

The chief guest for the event, the Missouri State Senator Jill Schupp, was welcomed by the president Sharath Rao, who stressed the need for more social improvements in India.

Senator Schupp traced the similarities between the two great democracies, and recognized the strides made by the Indians in America.

She honored IASTL with a framed proclamation from the office of Missouri State, and presented a Missouri State Flag.

The key-note address was delivered by Dr. Kamal Yadav, an industrialist and the founding member of Mahatma Gandhi Cultural Center of St. Louis.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- A Natya Mushaira (singing eulogies of Prophet Mohammed, PBUH), with eminent poets from across the US, and a function to release the 5th Natya Divan, “Is Par Se Us Par” (book of poetry praising Prophet Mohammed, PBUH), was held at Juliana Restaurant, 3001 W Peterson Ave, Chicago, IL 60659.

The Natia Mushaira attended by poets from Chicago, Virginia, Dallas, Los Angeles, etc. was presided over by Jalal Pasha Quadri and the book authored by Dr. Hamid Husain Amrohvi was jointly released by Dr. Ausaf Sayeed, Consul General of India in Chicago and Qazi Afzal Bayabani.

Dr. Sayeed, who was the chief guest at both the functions, was accompanied by his mother, Kaneez Fatima, who herself is a senior litterateur and multi-faceted personality of Urdu literature.

Dr. Hamid Hussain Amrohvi said that the main thrust of his book was not only to disseminate the golden teachings of Holy Prophet PBUH but also to inspire people to apply them in their daily lives to create a society based on the principles of justice, equality, and peaceful co-existence.

“My book is a humble step in the direction of urging Muslims to not only preach peace and brotherhood but also to become the actual followers and role models of this message”, added Dr. Amrohvi.

The book release function was followed by the Natya Mushaira which was characterized by spiritual fervor, devotion, and reverence to Prophet Mohammed, PBUH. Some of the most-loved names in natya poetry, from across the US, regaled and captivated hundreds of Urdu-loving Indian Americans at the mushaira with their exquisite couplets.

Famous poetess Umme Habiba, who kick-started the Mushaira, lived up to the expectations of her admirers. The impact of her natya poetry on the audience was such that virtually every couplet was followed by a chorus of “wah-wahs”.

The function was attended by Amir Mirza, Huma Mirza, Ghulam Mustafa Anjum, Hashmat Sohail, Shah Naeem Uddin, Naeemi, Prof Naqi Akhtar, Hassan Zainul Abedin, Ghousia Sultana, Khaleel Uzzaman, Ashfaq Syed and Ayeisha Osman Abdul Hakeem conducted the program.

Scholar, and Gokul Venkatachalam, for achieving first place in National Scripts Spelling bee competition, and presented them a plaque at the festival.

Jill Schupp then inaugurated a colorful fair (Mela), exhibiting about 20 local vendor stalls where prominent businesses, local families and volunteers displayed a variety of Indian food delicacies, jewelry, sarees, dresses, and arts and crafts from different parts of India.

In the evening, IASTL hosted a variety of competitions for children of various grade levels in essay writing, painting and flower arrangement. Winners of these competitions were awarded with certificates of merit and gift-cards.

Then a cultural program was conducted in which over 50 children participated to bring a colorful and vibrant grand-finale of the Independence Day celebrations.

The participants of varied age group presented patriotic, classical and folk themed cultural dances and presentations. The cultural program was attended by more than 200 members of the community while the daylong event attracted over 600 attendees. The festival ended with certificate distribution to all the participants.

The festival was meticulously planned and executed with the help of volunteers and the Board of Directors of IASTL.

The highlights of the event were cooking and fruit/vegetable carving competition, talent show, expert discussion on women’s health, emotional health and positive attitude.

All the attendees also enjoyed the funfilled games along with the shopping of ethnic collection of clothes and jewelery from different exhibitors.

Sikh drivers can wear turbans in license pic

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- The Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF), after working more than a year on the case, announced recently that the state of Illinois confirmed that Sikhs can now wear their turbans in their driver’s license photos.

SALDEF began pursuing the change after receiving reports that Sikh Americans and members of other communities were being asked to remove their turbans, and in some cases to modify their articles of faith, in order to get their driver’s license in Illinois.

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- Vineet Kalucha, an Indian American executive at an investment advisory firm in New York, has been charged by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) with fraud and siphoning investor proceeds to pay for his luxury car and settle other personal expenses.

The 49-year-old Kalucha, the chief investment officer of Aphelion Fund Management, and another executive have been charged with distributing falsified performance results to prospective investors in two hedge funds managed by them.

The SEC alleges that Kalucha fraudulently altered an outside audit firm’s report reviewing the performance of an investment account he managed.

Kalucha, who is also majority owner and managing partner of the firm, is also charged with siphoning about 40 per cent of the $1.5 million for his personal benefit that the firm raised in 2013.

In response to the SEC charge, US District Court Judge Jed Rakoff has issued a temporary restraining order, imposed an asset freeze to protect client assets and temporarily prohibited the defendants from soliciting new investors or additional investments from existing investors.

ICE agent faces 5-year jail in cheating case

BY A STAFF WRITER OLUMBIA, SC -- An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent from Columbia was charged in an indictment released by a Federal Grand Jury in Charleston on August 11.

Clinzy Oliver, Jr. was charged with three counts in the indictment returned from US Attorney Bill Nettles. The 38-year-old Oliver was charged with false scheme, false statements, and obstruction of ICE proceedings.

Oliver could face up to 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count.

BY A STAFF WRITER EW JERSEY -- A Pablo Picasso painting stolen from a Paris museum 14 years ago that was discovered on a cargo ship in Newark in December will be returned to France.

The repatriation of “La Coiffeuse” or “The Hairdresser” follows an investigation led by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.

The piece was last week ceremoniously handed over at the French Embassy in Washington and now will be sent home.

Federal officials, following up an investigative lead, inspected a targeted shipment in Newark in December and found the painting.

Fraudulent statements regarding the shipment’s value, country of origin and description were also recovered; the $15-million Picasso was labeled as a low-value handicraft worth about $30. The painting has been listed on the Interpol Stolen Works of Art database since it was reported stolen in 2001.

oderate amount of physical activity, particularly walking and bicycling, can significantly lower the risk of heart failure, says a study.

The participants who had the lowest levels of physical activity had a 47 percent higher risk of heart failure while those with highest levels had 51 percent higher

risk than men with a median level.

When analysing the different types of physical activity, the study found that walking or bicycling for 20 minutes per day was associated with the largest risk reduction.

“We found that recent activity may be more important for heart failure protection than past physical activity levels. The first incidence of heart failure in men was also later for those who actively walked or bicycled 20 minutes

each day,” said study co-author Andrea Bellavia from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm.

When enrolling in the study, participants from two counties in Sweden completed a questionnaire about their level of activity at work, home, walking or bicycling, and exercise in the year prior at an average of 60 years old and retro-

spectively at 30 years old.

Researchers assigned each type of physical activity an intensity score and determined walking or bicycling just 20 minutes per day was associated with a 21 percent lower risk of heart failure.

They found that men who were active at 30 years old but were inactive at the time of study enroll-

ment did not have a decreased risk of heart failure.

Heavy physical activity, such as long distance running, or manual labor may put stress on the body, which in turn has adverse effects on the heart.

The study was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Heart Failure.

To better understand personal factors that may contribute to weight gain, researchers analysed data from 12,204 participants.

They looked at the number of cigarettes smoked per day and body mass index before quitting, to see how these factors may have affected weight change over 10 years.

eople with high levels of autistic traits are more likely to produce unusually creative ideas, finds a first-of-its-kind study.

Psychologists from the University of East Anglia (UEA) and the University of Stirling examined the relationship between autistic-like traits and creativity.

While they found that people with high autistic traits produced fewer responses when generating alternative solutions to a problem known as “divergent thinking” the responses they did produce were more original and creative.

“People with high autistic traits

could be said to have less quantity but greater quality of creative ideas,” said study co-author Dr Martin Doherty from Norfolkbased University of East Anglia’s

school of psychology. Autism is a mental condition, present right from early childhood days, characterized by great difficulty in communicating and forming relation-

ships with others. These people are typically considered to be more rigid in their thinking, so the fact that the ideas they have are more unusual or rare is nothing less than surprising.

“This difference may have positive implications for creative problem solving,” Dr Doherty added.

It is the first study to find a link between autistic traits and the creative thinking processes.

The research, published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, looked at people who may not have a diagnosis of autism but who have high levels of behavior and thought processes typically associated with the condition.

As part of their analysis, researchers found that women initiated 69 percent of all divorces compared to 31 percent for men.

“It is a well-documented finding that single people tend to be less happy compared to those in a relationship but that may not be true for everyone,” said lead researcher Yuthika Girme, psychology doctoral candidate at University of Auckland.

People who fear relationship conflicts are just as happy when they are single or in a relationship.

In a survey of more than 4,000 residents, people with high “avoidance social goals” - who try at all costs to avoid relationship disagreements and conflict - were just as

happy being single as other people were in relationships.

Being single may remove some of the anxiety triggered by relationship conflicts for those individuals, the team noted in a paper published in the journal Social Psycho-
