Flynn resigns as US national security adviser amid Russia controversy The move comes less than a month into the job, making him one of the shortest-serving senior presidential advisers in modern history

Harward offered Flynn’s job WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has offered the job of National Security Adviser to Vice Admiral Robert Harward, sources close to the situation said. Harward, a 60-year-old former Navy SEAL, served as Deputy Commander of US Central Command under now-Defence Secretary James Mattis. He previously served as Deputy Commanding General for operations of Joint Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, CBS News reported. Harward has also commanded troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan for six years after the 9/11 attacks. Under President George W. Bush, he served on the National Security Council as director of strategy and policy for the office of combating terrorism. He has not yet accepted Trump’s offer, and negotiations continue over the National Security Council staff Harward would be empowered to build. According to sources, Trump told current Deputy National Security Adviser K.T. McFarland she could retain that post. Harward was apparently not consulted about that decision.

Media blamed for Flynn’s quitting

W

hite House national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned this week after it was revealed that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence about his conversations with the Russian ambassador to the US, the country’s media reported. “I inadvertently briefed the Vice President-elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian ambassador. I have sincerely apologized to the President and the Vice President, and they have accepted my apology,” Flynn wrote according to a copy of his resignation letter obtained by CNN. “I am tendering my resignation, honored to have served our nation and the American people in such a distinguished way,” he wrote. “I know with the strong leadership of President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence and the superb team they are assembling, this team will go down in history as one of the greatest presidencies in US history.” The move comes less than a month into the job, making him one of the shortest-serving senior presidential advisers in modern history. General Keith Kellogg will be the interim national security adviser, sources told CNN. He most recently served as

National Security Council chief of staff. A senior administration official said Kellogg, retired General David Petraeus and former Vice Admiral Bob Harward are possible replacements for Flynn. Flynn stepped down after days of reports that he had spoken to the ambassador in December about American sanctions against Russia, weeks before Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20. He previously had denied that he had any substantive conversations with Ambassador Sergey I. Kislyak,

U

S President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed their willingness to work together and build “bridges” to improve bilateral trade, at the same time that they made clear their deep differences on immigration and accepting refugees. The two leaders held their first bilateral meeting since Trump took office on January 20 and afterwards offered a joint press conference at the White House, albeit one at which few details were provided regarding how and on what they will cooperate in the coming months, EFE news reported. and Pence repeated that claim in television earlier this month. But earlier this week, a former administration official said the Justice Department last month warned the White House that Flynn had not been fully forthright about his conversations with the ambassador, the New York Times reported. As a result, the Justice Department feared that Flynn could be vulnerable to blackmail by Moscow. Officials said Pence has told others in the White House that he believed that Flynn lied to him by saying he had not discussed the topic of sanc-

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump blamed what he called the “fake media” and “illegal” leaks for the resignation of National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who had lied to top government officials about his contacts with Russia. At a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said the media had treated Flynn “very unfairly”. Trump asked for Flynn’s resignation because he had lost confidence in him after revelations the National Security Adviser had lied about his conversations with Russian officials, EFE news reported.

tions on a call with the Russian ambassador in late December. Even the mere discussion of policy - and the apparent attempt to assuage the concerns of an American adversary before Trump took office represents a remarkable breach of protocol, the daily said. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has been examining Flynn’s phone calls as he has come under growing questions about his interactions with Russian officials and his management of the National Security Council.

Clinton, former aide take jabs at Flynn post his resignation WASHINGTON: Hillary Clinton celebrated the resignation of Donald Trump’s National Security adviser Michael Flynn, by reminding him of “the real consequences of fake news”. Michael Flynn quit following reports that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence and other officials about his contacts with Russia, Fox News reported. Clinton retweeted a post from longtime confidante Phillipe Reines, where he suggested Flynn and his son, who spread the discredited “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory on the social media, get jobs at Domino’s. Reines, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, tweeted: “Dear Mike Flynn & Mike Flynn Jr... What goes around COMETS around. And given your pizza obsession...”, with a link to the

Dominos Pizza career page. Clinton responded with her own tweet: “Philippe’s got his own way of saying things, but he has a point about the real consequences of fake news...” Reines appeared to be referencing a fake news story which accused Clinton of running a child sex ring out of a pizza shop.

ISRO MAKES WORLD RECORD

The Indian space organisation successfully puts into orbit 104 satellites in a single mission, surpassing the 37 satellite launch record set by a Russian rocket IANS, SRIHARIKOTA (ANDHRA PRADESH)

I

ndia created a world record this week by successfully putting into orbit 104 satellites, including the country’s own Cartosat-2earth observation satellite, in a single mission. With the launch, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) surpassed the 37 satellite launch record set by a Russian rocket on June 19, 2014. The co-passenger satellites comprised 101 nano satellites, one each from Israel, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the UAE and 96 from the US, as well as two nano satellites from India. The total weight of all the satellites carried on-board is about 1,378 kg. Multiple satellite launch-

BRIEFS SC bench to hear pleas on Delhi govt NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday referred to a Constitution Bench a batch of petitions filed by Delhi’s Arvind Kejriwal-led government over conflict with the Centre over the powers to administer the national capital. Referring the matter for adjudication to the Constitution Bench, a bench of Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice R.K. Agrawal said the issue involved important question of law and the Constitution. Not framing the questions to be adjudicated by the Constitution Bench, the court asked the Centre and the Kejriwal government to argue their respective cases before the larger bench.

es with a PSLV rocket is not new for ISRO, having launched 20 satellites on June 22, 2016. “One hundred and four satellites have been put into orbit,” Indian

Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman A.S. Kiran Kumar said soon after the launch, congratulating the space agency’s team on its success.

President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress president Sonia Gandhi congratulated ISRO on the success. Science and Technology Minister Harsh has also congratulated ISRO. At the rocket mission control room, ISRO scientists were glued to their computer screens watching the rocket escaping the earth’s gravitational pull. Around 28 minutes into the flight, the rocket completed its birth ‘karma’ slinging all the 104 satellites into their intended orbits as per the scheduled sequence. The PSLV rocket is a four stage rocket alternatively powered by solid and liquid fuel. The Cartosat2 satellite weighs 714 kg and has a mission life of five years. “The Cartosat satellite is the

fourth one in the Cartosat-2 series of earth observation satellites. Already three are in the orbit and two more will be launched. Once all the six Cartosat-2 series satellites are launched the Cartosat-3 series would begin,” an ISRO official told IANS. Out of the total 226 satellites launched by ISRO with its PSLV rocket, 179 satellites were for foreign customers, said Project Director Jayakumar. According to P. Kunhikrishnan, Director of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) three more launch missions are slated this year. In his congratulatory tweet, the Prime Minister said: “Congratulations to ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) for the successful launch of PSLV-C37 and Cartosat satellite together with 103 nano satellites.”

n a stern message, Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat on Wednesday said the army operations against terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir will continue and warned locals against supporting militants. “Our aim is to bring peace and tranquility in the Kashmir Valley. These terrorists have now entered villages and we are conducting operations against them. We find the local population

Speaking on the high casualties among the security forces in antiterrorist operations, the Chief of Army Staff said: “Our aim has been to conduct operations in a way that don’t endanger the civilians. Battle for Utter Pradesh

causes collateral damage Officials in the concerned departments fear that the revenue targets for the current fiscal might take a knock of 25-30 per cent MOHIT DUBEY, LUCKNOW

U

ttar Pradesh’s revenue has taken a big hit — first due to demonetization and now because most government employees are out on election duty. Officials in the concerned departments fear that the revenue targets for the current fiscal might take a knock of 25-30 per cent. The Sales Tax Department, an official told exclusively to IANS, has seen a drop in collections in the past three months. While it reportedly earned Rs 4,494 crore in tax in November, the collection slipped in December and is set to go down further in January and February due to engagement of employees and officials in election duty. The Excise Department, the cash cow, has also taken a beating in revenue collection. An official said that as against a target of Rs 1,443 crore in December, the collection was down at Rs 1,345 crore. With elections for the 403-seat Uttar Pradesh assembly underway, even sale of liquor has fallen, part-

ly because of strictures from the Election Commission. The stamp and registration revenue target was Rs 12,130 crore but has been downsized in a big way, with collections dropping to Rs 9,222 crore. The target for this month has been scaled down to Rs 13,953 crore from Rs 16,319.60 crore (a

loss of Rs 2,366 crore). The Sales and Trade Tax target has been revised from Rs 57,940.30 crore to Rs 51,508.93 crore. The ongoing elections have also hit hearings and disposal at revenue courts. By a conservative official estimate, in Lucknow alone more

than 12,000 cases have come to a halt as officials are on the election duty. All cases being heard in the district magistrates’ courts and other revenue courts have now been given dates after March 14, by when probably a new government would be in place. Cases pending before officials

of five tehsils in Lucknow and others have also been deferred till March. And with traffic police too deployed on election duty, even traffic in Lucknow is affected. For about five days, traffic snarls have become the order of the day. A police officer told IANS that 45 Senior Head Constables, 50 Head Constables and 280 Constables have been pulled out for 26 days of election duty. Finding itself short-staffed to manage traffic — not to speak of increased VIP movement due to the elections — the traffic department is trying to rope in NCC cadets and Civil Defense wardens to help them out. The Haj pilgrimage process too has been put on hold in more than one way. The lottery taken out to name the lucky selected ones that usually takes place between March 1 and 8 has been shifted to a later date. And as politicians are busy campaigning, wooing voters, there are thousands who are hit by election blues and have become collateral damage!

Indian techies welcome in Canada after Trump ban Visa and travel restrictions imposed by US President Donald Trump will be a boon for tech recruitment GURMUKH SINGH, TORONTO

I

ndian-origin tech leaders in Canada say the controversial visa and travel restrictions imposed by US President Donald Trump will be a boon for tech recruitment and investment in Canada. “This provides a great opportunity for the best talent from India to come, live and work in Canada,” said Shafin Diamond Tejani, the CEO of Fantasy 360, a Vancouver-based global leader in creating immersive experiences and games using Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR). “We are already getting inquiries

from Indian techies, both in India and in the United States, about relocating to Vancouver,” said Tejani, whose family is originally from Gujarat.

Tejani and his associates have a target of bringing a dozen Indian startups with a focus on VR/AR/MR to British Columbia Together with his partner Ray Walia, another NRI in Vancouver who runs the not-for-profit tech incubator Launch Academy, Tejani

is working on streamlined avenues to attract top tech talent from India. The duo is part of the Canadian technology community that has written to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urging him to provide visas to those caught by Trump’s executive orders. “In choosing to hire, train, and mentor the best people in the world, we can build global companies that grow our economy,” said the letter adding, “By embracing diversity, we can drive innovation to benefit the world.” Tejani and his associates have a target of bringing a dozen Indian start-ups with a focus on VR/AR/MR to British Columbia, which also has a shortage of pro-

grammers and other skilled IT professionals. “We are confident we will be able to this,” said Tejani, whose companies have launched over 40 start-ups in 21 different countries, employing over 350 people and generating over $100 million in annual revenues.

For Ray Walia, who co-founded Launch Academy in 2012 to become Vancouver’s top startupincubator, the situation in the US has prompted his group to set up specialized services for Indian techies looking to relocate to Canada.

Indian-origin NASA scientist detained at US border

‘H1-B visas made US firms aces’

Sidd Bikkannavar was detained on January 30, upon returning to the US from Santiago by US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officials IANS, WASHINGTON

A

US-born NASA scientist of Indian-origin was detained this week by US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officials and was not permitted to enter the country unless he unlocked his PIN-protected work phone. Sidd Bikkannavar, who works in NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), was detained on January 30, upon returning to the US from Santiago, Chile, a US media network, the Verge, reported. Bikkannavar said he was pressured to give the CBP agents his phone and access PIN. Since the phone was issued by NASA, it may have contained sensitive material that wasn’t supposed to be shared. Bikkannavar’s phone was returned to him after it was

Short takes Indian-Americans offer help to dam evacuees WASHINGTON: Several gurdwaras in Sacramento have come forward to offer meals and shelter to the evacuees of Yuba City following fears of Oroville Dam collapsing, a media report said. Some 188,000 residents, including around 20,000 IndianAmericans, in the River Valley below the Lake Oroville Dam were ordered to move away from their homes when one of two damaged spillways appeared in danger of imminent collapse from severe erosion, American Bazaar online reported. —IANS

Telangana youth shot dead in US HYDERABAD: Unidentified gunmen shot dead a youth from Telangana in California in the US. V. Vamshi Reddy, 27, was killed near his apartment, according to information reaching his family in Warangal Urban district. Reddy’s friends informed his family about the incident over telephone. The motive behind the crime and other details were not known yet. The youth, who had gone to the US in 2015, recently completed his MS and was looking for a job. His parents collapsed on hearing about the killing of their only son, a family friend said. —IANS

searched by CBP, but he doesn’t know exactly what information officials might have taken from the device. Bikkannavar is a natural-born US citizen enrolled in CBP’s Global Entry programme, which

allowed participants who have undergone a background check to speed up their entry into the US. He had not visited any of the countries mentioned in Donald Trump’s Muslim travel ban, but Bikkannavar told the Verge that

agents may have become suspicious about his family name, which is southern Indian. The JPL scientist returned to the US four days after the signing of a sweeping and controversial executive order on travel into the country. Within days of its signing, the travel order was stayed, but not before more than 60,000 visas were revoked, according to the US State Department. “Sorry for my absence. On my way back home to the US last weekend, I was detained by Homeland Security and held with others who were stranded under the Muslim ban,” he wrote on Facebook. “CBP officers seized my phone and wouldn’t release me until I gave them my access PIN for them to copy the data. I initially refused since it’s a JPL-issued phone and I must protect access.”

WASHINGTON: With a private member’s bill being introduced in the US Congress that seeks to fix the minimum salary of H1-B visa holders at $130,000, India’s Ambassador to the US Navtej Sarna has said this visa category has actually been crucial in making American companies globally competitive. “This H1-B scheme has been crucial in making US companies competitive globally, in increasing their client base, in increasing their innovations,” Sarna said in an interview to CNN. “And it is the Indian tech industry which has been actually creating jobs here. The reports, analyses by very respected houses which say that over 400,000 jobs have been directly and indirectly supported in the US,” he said. —IANS

UN condemns N.Korea UNSC declared that the North Korean missile test was a ‘serious violation’ of the country’s international obligations and urged the regime to stop such actions IANS, UNITED NATIONS

T

he UN Security Council unanimously condemned North Korea’s latest missile test, while the US pushed for the response to include actions, and “not just words”, the media reported. Pyongyang’s first military challenge since Donald Trump’s arrival in the White House came on Sunday, when North Korean leader Kim Jong-un personally supervised the launch of a medium-range ballistic missile that landed in the Sea of Japan, Efe news reported. On Monday, the Security Council held an urgent meeting to analyse the evidence and released a statement condemning the action. In the statement, similar to earlier occasions, the highest decisionmaking body of the UN threatened to impose new “significant measures” against the North Kore-

SHORT TAKES Pak court allows channels to show Indian movies ISLAMABAD: The Lahore High Court has allowed private channels to show Indian movies as per their terms of agreements with Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra). The court on Monday granted permission in the light of Pemra’s 2002 ordinance that television channels were allowed to run Indian films, The News International reported. Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah issued the order after Leo Communication and others challenged the ban on the broadcast of Indian content on TVs.

British govt rejects petition to cancel Trump’s visit LONDON: The British government has officially rejected a petition calling for US President Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK to be cancelled. Nearly two million people signed the petition on the official Parliament website, with the number still rising. In a written response, the Foreign Office said that it did not agree with the request and would extend “the full courtesy of a state visit” to the controversial US President, the Independent reported on Tuesday. The government’s statement said that it “recognizes the strong views expressed by the many signatories of this petition, but does not support this petition.” —IANS

an regime, which would add to the harsh sanctions already in force. In a communique by all 15 members, the Council declared that the North Korean missile launch was a “serious violation” of the country’s international obliga-

tions and urged the regime to stop such actions. However, no member state wanted to speak of possible concrete actions, while many insist on the importance of full implementation of existing punishments.

The new US administration, which is facing a North Korean missile launch for the first time, called on the Council “to use every available resource to make it clear to the North Korean regime - and its enablers - that these launches are unacceptable.” “It is time to hold North Korea accountable - not with our words, but with our actions,” US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said in a statement. Japan, which together with the US and South Korea requested an urgent meeting, was very satisfied with that clear message and suggested that it does not seek a new resolution against Pyongyang, but rather a way to strengthen the implementation of the current measures. China, which in recent years has distanced itself from the North Korean regime as a result of its continuing weapons tests, also condemned Sunday’s test.

Kim Jong-un’s half-brother killed SEOUL/KUALA LUMPUR: South Korea and Malaysia confirmed on Thursday that the North Korean citizen assassinated at a Malaysian airport was Kim Jong-un’s halfbrother after a fingerprint test came positive, a media report said. The Malaysian government, confirming the death of Kim Jong-nam, who was apparently assassinated on Monday, said that it will transport his body to the Communist country’s authorities, Efe news reported. Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi said the incident would not affect bilateral ties, and dismissed as “speculation” the notion that the North Korean regime is behind the suspected killing. Malaysian security forces have detained two women, one from Vietnam and the other from Indonesia, in connection with Kim Jong-nam’s killing. Jong-nam died on Monday while being transferred to a hospital in Putrajaya after he was reportedly attacked by two women who sprayed a chemical on his face. —IANS

The Prime Minister was speaking at a high-level meeting here, held for reviewing law and order situation in the country after a suicide blast in Lahore claimed 16 lives, including senior police officials. Eiffel Tower to get bullet-proof glass wall IANS, PARIS

A

bullet-proof glass wall is to be built around the base of the Eiffel Tower as part of a plan to provide extra protection against terrorist attacks at one of the worlds most famous landmarks. The wall will be 2.5 meters high and will cost around $21 million. It will replace the metal barriers set up as a temporary measure around the iconic tower during the Euro football tournament last year, the Local France news portal reported on Thursday. “The terror threat remains high in Paris and the most vulnerable sites,

led by the Eiffel Tower, must be the object of special security measures,” said Deputy Mayor Jean-Francois Martins, who is in charge of tourism at the Paris City Hall. The glass wall will prevent individuals or vehicles storming the site, which is visited by six million people a year, he added. It will run along Quai Branly and Avenue Gustave-Eiffel — and through the middle of the small parks on either side, according to the report. The glass wall will mean that everyone will have to pass through security checks and not all Parisians are happy about the new wall, according to Le Parisien newspaper.

adding, “it is our national duty to weed out terrorism”. On Monday, at least 16 people, including senior police officers, were killed and 73 other injured in a strong explosion near the Punjab Assembly building in Lahore. The bomb blast occurred at Chairing Cross, Mall Road, Lahore, killing Deputy Inspector General Traffic Capt (retd) Ahmad Mobin, Senior Superintendent of Police Mahmood Gondal and Deputy Superintendent of Police Pervez Butt. The incident occurred as hundreds of chemists were protesting nearby against a new regulatory law, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said.

India thump Bangladesh by 208 runs in one-off Test A comprehensive show by Virat Kohli-led side, the team put up a mammoth total of 687-6 declared in their innings before bowling Bangladesh out for 388 IANS, HYDERABAD

S

pinners Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin picked up four wickets each as India bowled Bangladesh out for 250 in their second innings to clinch the one-off cricket Test by 208 runs here. Resuming the day at overnight 103-3, Bangladesh lost two wickets in the first session to be at 202-5. Then till the tea session, they lost the rest of the five wickets, struggling against Jadeja, Ashwin and pacer Ishant Sharma, who bagged two wickets. Following the win, skipper Virat Kohli’s side has now gone 19 Tests undefeated — an Indian record, bettering Sunil Gavaskar’s 18match unbeaten streak between 1976 to 1980. Kohli also captured six consecutive Test series. They won away against Sri Lanka and the West Indies away before prevailing over South Africa, New Zealand and England. The latest triumph was a comprehensive show by Virat Kohli-led side. They put up a mammoth total of 687-6 declared in their innings before bowling Bangladesh out for 388. Then, India scored at a rapid pace in their second innings before declaring at 159-4, setting a target of 459 for the visitors to score over a session and a full day. “Credit to our bowlers, they were able to get result on this kind of a track. of patience for us to get wickets during Bangladesh first innings,” said Kohli, who scored 204 and 38 in the two innings respectively and was declared Man-of-the-Match. “If you have two world class spinners in your side, you can tell your pacers to attack, and that’s something that has really worked for us,

the partnership between spinners and fast bowlers. They feed off each other,” Kohli said. “This game was again a revelation for Umesh (Yadav), Bhuvi bowled wonderfully with the old ball as well. Ishant has always been a very good old-ball bowler as well.” On the final day, overnight bats-

man Mahmudullah (64) waged a lone battle as he posted his 13th fifty in Test cricket, while rest of the batsmen failed against the pressure exerted by India at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. The pressure told on the visitors from the morning. Experienced lefthanded batsman Shakib Al Hasan could add only two runs to his overnight score of 21. A delivery from left-arm spinner Jadeja bounced high, hitting the rough to kiss Shakib’s gloves for an easy catch by Cheteshwar Pujara at short leg in the second over of the day. At 106-4, captain Mushfiqur Rahim joined Mahmudullah in the middle and the pair negotiated the pressure exerted by India for a while. Mahmudullah opened up with two edgy fours off paceman Umesh Yadav and once he got settled, Jadeja and off-spinner Ashwin failed to trouble him. Ashwin, however, ended the 56run partnership as an attacking Mushfiqur danced down the track but couldn’t clear Jadeja, who took a running catch at mid-off. Then Mahmudullah partnered Sabbir Rahman (22) as they showed the doggedness and willingness to battle it out with a 40-run stand for the sixth wicket till the lunch session. Early into the second session, the visitors lost Sabbir and Mahmudullah and afterwards, it was a mere formality for the Indians. Ashwin completed the rout by dismissing the last batsman Taskin Ahmed with a leg before decision.

with Anushka. Otherwise, they have remained mum about rumors that they’re more than just good

friends. Anushka and Kohli first met in 2013 when they worked together for a TV commercial. There has been a buzz about their bond ever since. She was also once called a bad omen for being seen by Kohli’s side during the ICC Cricket World Cup semi-final in Melbourne in 2015. And gossip mills have remained abuzz about them as they continued to get photographed together at public events — more recently at cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s wedding to Hazel Keech, and designer Manish Malhotra’s birthday party. The two were also seen at Dehradun, where they spent their Christmas and New Year holidays last year.

Sasikala-backer

Palaniswami is Tamil Nadu CM The Governor’s invitation set off celebrations in the Sasikala camp even as outgoing CM pledged to continue his fight against “one family” taking over the AIADMK

Tamil Nadu’s new CM is staunch Jayalalithaa loyalist

IANS, CHENNAI

E

. Palaniswami, a loyalist of the now-jailed AIADMK General Secretary V.K. Sasikala, took oath as Tamil Nadu’s new Chief Minister. Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao invited Palaniswami, 64, earlier elected by AIADMK MLAs backing Sasikala as their legislature party leader, to form a ministry “at the earliest” and win a trust vote within 15 days. The move came a day after Palaniswami met the Governor and submitted a list of legislators backing him. The Governor’s invitation set off celebrations in the Sasikala camp even as outgoing acting Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam pledged to continue his fight against “one family” taking over the AIADMK. Panneerselvam said people were angry that a new government was being formed with the support of legislators who, he said, were held for days in captivity at a resort. Minister for Milk and Dairy Development K.T. Rajenthra Bhalaji said the Governor had saved democracy by inviting Palaniswami to form the government. He said the legislators would soon vacate the resort. Palaniswami aides said overnight

that he had the backing of 124 of the 135 AIADMK MLAs, all holed up at the resort. The Governor’s invite was a clear sign that Panneerselvam had lost the numbers battle and that he had been unable to woo the majority of party MLAs to his side despite being the Chief Minister. Thursday’s celebrations by Palaniswami and the MLAs supporting him came after a day of gloom when Sasikala returned to the Bengaluru Central Jail after being held guilty of corruption by the Supreme Court. Also jailed with her were her relatives Elavarsi and V.N. Sud-

hakaran. Sasikala, who had wished to become the Chief Minister, is now barred from contesting elections for 10 years. Palaniswami, the Minister of Public Works, Highways and Minor Ports in the outgoing government, AIADMK Deputy General Secretary T.T.V. Dinakaran and other leaders discussed government formation at the Poes Garden residence of the late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. An emboldened AIADMK owing allegiance to Sasikala made it clear it will never embrace Panneerselvam. Barring Panneerselvam and School Education Minister K. Pan-

CHENNAI: Edapadi K. Palaniswami, who will be the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, is a staunch loyalist of the late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. He was one of four ministers tasked by Jayalalithaa, who died on December 5, to advise her on party affairs. The Minister of Public Works, Highways and Minor Ports in the outgoing Chief Minister O. Pannerselvam’s cabinet, Palaniswami was ranked number three in seniority. He was tipped for the Chief Minister’s post after Jayalalithaa died but that did not happen. Hailing from Nedungulam village in Salem district, Palaniswami belongs to the Gounder community. He joined the AIADMK in the 1980s and was a Jayalaltihaa supporter when the party split after its founder M.G. Ramachandran’s

diarajan, all other MLAs in “the rival camp are welcome to join us”, Handloom and Textiles Minister O.S. Manian told the media. Panneerselvam revolted against Sasikala on February 7, alleging he

death in December 1987. He first entered the Tamil Nadu assembly in 1989 from Edapadi constituency and retained the seat in 1991. A farmer by profession, Palaniswami was on the sidelines for some time as he lost the Edapadi seat in 2006. He came back to limelight in 2011 after winning from the constituency. Jayalalithaa inducted him as the Minister for State Highways and Minor Posts. In the 2016 election, he won from Edapadi with a margin over 42,000 votes and was included in the Jayalalithaa ministry as the Minister for Public Works, Highways and Minor Ports. After the apex court upheld now jailed AIADMK General Secretary V.K. Sasikala’s conviction, she picked him as her successor as the leader of the party legislature wing.

was forced to resign as Chief Minister to pave way for her to occupy the post. Sasikala hit back, sacking Panneerselvam as the AIADMK Treasurer and also from the party’s primary membership.

Sasikala back in jail, AIADMK infighting rages IANS, BENGALURU/CHENNAI

A

IADMK General Secretary V.K. Sasikala, held guilty for corruption, returned to the Bengaluru jail as the battle for supremacy in the AIADMK continued in Tamil Nadu. Sasikala, 59, was sent to a women’s cell in the Central Jail soon after she reached Bengaluru in a convoy of cars from Chennai after her plea for more time to surrender was rejected by the Supreme Court. A prison official told journalists that the long-time confidante of the late J. Jayalalithaa, who was Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu when she passed away on December 5, is expected to make candles in jail. Sasikala surrendered to the trial court set up in the prison along with her sister-in-law Elavarasi and

nephew V.N. Sudhakaran, all of whom were held guilty along with the late Jayalalithaa by the apex court on Tuesday of having assets disproportionate to their known sources of income. All four were lodged in the same prison for three weeks from September 27, 2014 after the trial court sentenced them. They later got bail from the Karnataka High Court. Even at the prison, where police and AIADMK activists scuffled, Sasikala sought more time to serve the jail term but the judge rejected her request and told her to undergo a health check-up. The trial court was set up in the jail complex because the civil court complex in Bengaluru is in a congested area and could have faced law and order issues due to the high-profile nature of the case.

In Chennai, Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao invited pro-Sasikala AIADMK leader E. Palanisami to find out who has majority support among party MLAs.

Before leaving Chennai, Sasikala visited the Marina Beach memorial of Jayalalithaa. Hitting the floor thrice with her right hand, she pledged to return

to politics after defeating the “betrayers” in the AIADMK. She later went to AIADMK founder late M.G.Ramachandran’s house at Ramavaram in Chennai and paid her respects before his picture and also meditated for some time. At both places, hundreds of supporters gathered, most of them looking grim. Once the Supreme Court held Sasikala guilty of corruption this week, the MLAs backing Sasikala and housed in a guest house near here elected Palanisami as their new legislature party leader. Panneerselvam aides claimed he had the support of some 40 of the 135 AIADMK legislators but Palanisami said he had adequate legislative backing to form a government.

Sandeep Das won the Best World Music Album at the 59th Grammy Awards.

Adele, who began the award show at the Staples Center bagged all the top honors, including categories like Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year and Song Of The Year. She also took home the trophies for Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album awards.

In a heart-warming move, she refused to take the Album Of The Year honor and said Beyonce deserves it more than her. “I can’t possibly accept this award, and I’m very humbled and very grateful and gracious but my life is Beyonce, and the album to me, the ‘Lemonade’ album,” Adele said.

NEW DELHI: He is experiencing “satisfying tiredness” after winning his first Grammy Award, but that hasn’t stopped India-born tabla virtuoso Sandeep Das, who has been playing in collaboration with an international ensemble of musicians for 18 years, from wondering why he was never considered worthy of an honor in his own country. ‘Jolly LLB 2’: Shines in an entertaining satire Film: “Jolly LLB 2”; Director: Subhash Kapoor; Cast: Akshay Kumar, Huma Qureshi, Saurabh Shukla, Annu Kapoor, Kumud Mishra, Manav Kaul, Sayani Gupta, Avijit Dutta; Rating: ***

A

part from being a courtroom drama and Saurabh Shukla playing Judge Tripathi, there is nothing common between Jolly LLB 2 and its predecessor the Arshad Warsi-starrer Jolly LLB. And the only reference, if any, is a faint line when Saurabh Shukla, says: “Your name seems familiar, heard it in Delhi”.

Astutely mounted on a larger scale and set in Lucknow, Jolly LLB 2 is a redemption story. The film trails Jagdishwar Mishra aka Jolly, an assistant to a renowned lawyer,

who desires to set up his own practice, cheats a young lady Hina, seeking justice for her husband Iqbal, in a case of mistaken identity. Dejected with the turn of

events, Hina takes a drastic step that jolts Jolly. Ridden with guilt and to undo what he did, he files a Public Interest Litigation. How he gains redemption and prominence, forms the crux of the tale. Akshay Kumar as Jagdishwar Mishra is the raison d’etre of this film. Though he is too old to play a novice and a bit unconvincing while indulging in buffoonery, he nevertheless carries the film squarely on his shoulders exuding star charisma. Huma Qureshi as his whisky-drinking and Gucciwearing wife Pushpa Pandey is competent. But her character is an appendage to the plot which offers nothing but a wholesome appeal to Jolly’s character.

I have the luxury of healthy body: Ileana

Sidharth Malhotra proposes Priyanka Chopra

A

ctress Ileana D’Cruz, last seen on the big screen in Akshay Kumar-starrer Rustom, says she is most thankful to her family for her successful life. Ileana wrote on her Instagram page: “Although work keeps me away from them, I’m thankful for a beautiful family. There are days I do not want to get out of bed just because I want another hour of sleep, I’m thankful; I have the luxury of a healthy body, a great job and an amazing family.” Having made her acting debut with 2006 Telugu romantic-drama Devadasu, she went on to star in several Telugu hits such as Jalsa, Kick and Pokkiri.

‘I made many wrong decisions’

A

ctress Shamita Shetty, who has had a short stint in the Hindi film industry, says she made many choices she could have avoided. Shamita’s Bollywood career never took off as well as that of her sister Shilpa. Asked if she has any regrets in making some decisions regarding her career, Shamita told IANS here: “I have made many decisions that I probably shouldn’t have made, but life is about making mistakes, learning and moving on. Growing and learning from your experiences — and that is the way I have taken it.”

I’m not fashion conscious: Sushmita

S

he has always been lauded for her confidence and for making style statements, but actress and former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen says she isn’t a fashion conscious person. “I don’t know if I am fashion conscious, because I don’t follow the seasons. I have no rules to fashion. If green is in fashion, you’ll probably find me in orange. So I would not call myself fashion conscious, but I am fashion aware,” Sushmita told IANS in an e-mail interview. The actress says if she chooses to follow a trend, she would probably be good at it. Why? “Because I love shopping and I love being aware of the fashion trends... But I don’t necessarily follow it,” she added. The 41-year-old actress says the word “stylish” can be associated more with her.

BY A STAFF WRITER EYTON, CO -- The home of an Indian American couple in Peyton, Colorado, was vandalized on February 5 with eggs thrown at their house, dog feces smeared on the garage, and nearly 50 hate messages and racial slurs. The FBI is investigating the vandalism as a hate crime, a media report said and added that no suspects have yet been identified. But KKTV, a news partner of ‘The Gazette’, spoke to the homeowner, who agreed to identify himself by only his first name of Saravanan, saying that neighbors alerted him to the vandalism. About 10 percent of the messages were racial slurs, Saravanan told the police. “’You brown or Indian shouldn’t be here,’ something like that,” he paraphrased some of the estimated 50 signs posted to his home and vehicle. “So it was frightening,” adding that he had no idea why his family was targeted. The incident comes in the wake of increased hate incidents against Muslims and other minority groups since the November 8 election, particularly after President Donald Trump’s recent executive orders on travel bans and immigration.

Fake alerts worry NJ communities

BY A STAFF WRITER DISON, NJ -- Fake alerts of document checks have led to c o n f u s i o n i n Ne w Je r s e y communities as the news of federal agents detaining unauthorized immigrants reverberates across the country. In Edison, an alert has made its rounds in the local online community warning of authorities asking for identification as people entered and exited two Indian grocery stores on Oak Tree Road. “No one has been asking for papers,” said Jagjit Singh, who manages Subzi Mandi, a store named in the alert. “People have been asking about it (the post), but we haven’t had any problems. Everyone is OK.” A block down the road, Patel Brothers manager, Satish Patel, also said that warnings were unfounded. The post, which was accompanied by a screenshot of a conversation from Facebook’s What’s App, went live almost two weeks before the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids but has since spread through multiple social platforms. “We have found quite a few also,” said Chia Chia Wang, the organizing and advocacy director at American Friends Service Committee’s Immigrant Rights Program. The program based in Newark provides immigrants with legal services, as well as training and education on immigrants’ rights in New Jersey. Wang said people should take note of the posts but if it’s just a warning to stay away from a business, it’s likely fake. Similar unverified social media posts have been reported in New York City.

Graffiti at mosque: FBI probe sought

E

BY A STAFF WRITER OLUMBUS, OH -- The Columbus chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations asked the FBI and state law enforcement to investigate the graffiti at the Ahlul Bayt Society Islamic Center as a hate crime. Officials at the Ahlul Bayt Center said a white man was seen on surveillance video painting messages on the door of the mosque that included “Allah is a fraud.” “We urge the FBI to add its resources to the investigation of this hate incident and call on local, state and national leaders to repudiate the growing anti-Muslim bigotry in our society that results in such crimes,” said CAIR-Ohio Legal Director Romin Iqbal.

C

Another fake alert was emailed and shared last week warning of raids in Jersey City. The critical detail in verifying any of these reports, according to Wang, is getting a description of authorities making the stops. “Were they local police or ICE, etcetera?” she said. Wang’s group encourages immigrants to know their rights and to help educate others in their community since her group can’t reach

everyone. She offered the following tips: --Always carry some form of identification, whether that is local or foreign papers. --Authorities cannot ask someone if they were born in America but can ask for identification. --Without a warrant, authorities cannot enter a home. --Remember that everyone has the right to remain silent.

Indian American Billionaire Jay Pandya to Build 8 Cricket Stadiums and Create 17,800 Jobs in USA BY A STAFF WRITER HILADELPHIA, PA-When the Trump administration is trying its best to save US jobs for Americans by restricting the inflow of foreign workers on H1B and other employment related visas, Indian American Jignesh ‘Jay’Pandya from Philadelphia has come forward to create 17,800 jobs in the United States. A self-made business tycoon, Jignesh Pandya recently announced his plans to build eight cricket stadiums in USA. It is a $2.4 billion project. The other purpose is to professionalize cricket and heighten its popularity in the US. New York, New Jersey, Texas, California, Georgia, Florida, Illinois and Washington DC are the target locations for the eight cricket stadiums. Each stadium having a seating capacity for 26,000 will cost approximately $300, according to estimates. Direct and indirect salaries worth $800 billion will be generated from each stadium over a span of 20 years, according to Jignesh Pandya, the Chairman of Global Sports Ventures. The proposed cricket stadiums in USA will be modeled as multi-purpose entertainment and lifestyle centers. It is expected that each stadium will create employment for 725 workers in construction and 1500 workers on a permanent basis. A press release from Global Sports Ventures states that America will see job opportunities in sports tourism, coaching and training, merchandising, security, logistics and transportation, hospitality, media and broadcasting once the $2.4-billion project is completed. Philadelphia-based Jignesh Pandya is a sports enthusiast. He is a die-hard supporter of cricket. He believes that Americans are the greatest sports lovers in the world. The United

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- Nationally recognized hospital Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown (New York) is launching 10-week ‘Healing Yoga’ class from February 17 for ‘cancer and chronic disease patients’ to improve their ‘quality of life’. It utilizes the practices of yoga therapy as a complement to traditional medicine. Its claimed physical benefits include: increases resistance to illness & disease; eases side effects of antiviral medications; induces the “relaxation response”; supports a healthy immune system; increases strength & flexibility and eases chronic pain. It lists other benefits of healing yoga as: promotion of stress reduction and relaxation, ease of depression and anxiety and encouragement of healthy decision-making. Meanwhile distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada, has termed it as a step in the positive direction to make multi-benefit yoga available for cancer and chronic disease patients. He urged all major US hospitals to launch yoga classes for their patients. According to US National Institutes of Health, yoga may help one to feel more relaxed, be more flexible, improve posture, breathe deeply, and get rid of stress. According to a “2016 Yoga in America Study”, about 37 million Americans (which included many celebrities) now practice yoga.

States’ sports economy is valued at a whopping $87 billion, while the sports economy of India stands at a nascent stage only for $6 billion. Indian American Jignesh Pandya’s proposal to build 8 cricket stadiums is likely to boost the US economy in sports. The founder and chairman of the Rohan Group headquartered in Philadelphia, Jignesh Pandya watches international cricket matches in different parts of the world. He observes that a majority of the audience is from USA. The US has a huge market for cricket, which is to be explored for an economic boost. Over 1.4 million people across the US watched the ICC World Twenty20 tournament in 2016. Cricket used to enjoy immense popularity in America before the Civil War. George Washington, a cricket lover, played the sport in

Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, in 1778. A cricket match between USA and Canada was the first international sports competition, according to the United States of America Cricket Association (USACA). Global Sports Ventures’ $70 million multi-year licensing agreement with USACA is the first significant step towards restoring the glory of cricket in the US. Indian American Jignesh Pandya, a selfmade billionaire, is a philanthropist too. He immigrated to USA at the age of 15 and got into retail business when he was 19 years old. Then he ventured into commercial real estate and gradually built an empire across the East coast. He supports the World Hunger Organization’s mission to eradicate hunger by donating to distribute free meals to the needy. He feels privileged to give back to the community.

Job creation for middle class made easier BY A STAFF WRITER A S H I N G TO N , D C – Congressmen Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) and Mike Gallagher (RWI) have launched a Middle Class Jobs Caucus. The group will work to find bipartisan solutions to the key issues facing America’s middle class and working families such as job creation, wage increases, and economic growth. “Every era of prosperity in our history has been built on a thriving middle class. In the plainest terms, middle-class jobs mean a strong America,” said Rep. Krishnamoorthi. “This caucus will help to create those jobs through focusing on key issues facing working families, such as strengthening our job training and infrastructure.” Rep. The elegantly decorated stage with diyas (lamps), stringed lights, fresh fruits and prasad (offerings) wore a festive look in its ornate finery with Mataji’s dazzling framed picture in the center of the Puja platform, adorned with a gorgeous chunni with colorful fresh flower garlands. Ganeshji’s idol aslo sat on the platform in full splendor , garlanded and draped with a red chunni.

Hotelier pleads guilty to underpaying staff BY A STAFF WRITER ATTLE CREEK, MI -- An Indian-American hotel owner in Michigan pleaded guilty to paying lower than minimum wages to his employees despite signing an agreement with the government to do so. Mehul Chandubhai Patel, also called ‘Mike Patel’, 31, of Battle Creek, Michigan, pled guilty on February 2 to lying to Labor Department investigators about the wages paid to his staff. The charges stem from Patel’s violation of minimum wage rules in connection with two hotels operated by him, in Battle Creek and Coldwater, Michigan. Patel appeared in the federal court before Magistrate Judge Ellen Carmody and pled guilty to the crime of concealing a material

fact from the federal government when obligated to disclose it. He admitted that during 2014, the Labor Department had hauled him up on the issue of violating minimum wage laws by underpaying his hotel employees. He thereafter signed an agreement promising to repay his employees. When requested to provide proof that he had done so, Patel sent the Labor Department checks indicating that back wages had been repaid. But he hid the fact that he made his employees to return the money to him. Patel faces up to five years in prison, restitution and other penalties. US District Judge Paul Maloney will impose sentence on Patel on a date yet to be decided.

Vamsi Reddy Mamidala

BY A STAFF WRITER AN FRANCISCO, CA -- An Indian student from Telangana doing a master’s program in California was shot dead on the night of February 11in San Francisco, in an alleged robbery that went awry. Vamsi Reddy Mamidala, 24, of Warangal was doing MS at a university in California, and was also working in a store for part time. When he was going home from work on the fateful night, a man reportedly tried to rob him off. As Vamsi tried to resist, the white man, believed by the police to be under the influence of drugs, shot the young Telugu guy with a gun that he was carrying. Police officers from the US called up the family in Warangal and informed about their son’s killing. The perpetrator escaped and the police are currently searching for him. Doubts are being expressed that the killing might not be just a robbery-turned-homicide but a racisminfluenced crime. Mamidala had recently completed his MS course in Computer Science and was looking for software jobs in the area while working part-time in a store.

Hotel manager in jam for sheltering gang BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- An Indian-origin hotel manager faces federal charges for allegedly helping a feared street gang in its drugdealing and prostitution operations in California. Umesh Oza, who managed two hotels in Oceanside city, was charged last week with racketeering conspiracy under laws traditionally used for organised-crime syndicates and mobsters, prosecutors said. Oza also used the name Kevin. “Not only are we targeting the traffickers and customers, but we are also going after the businesses that facilitate this type of gang activity,” said Alana Robinson, the acting federal prosecutor for Southern California in San Diego. Oza “provided a safe haven” for the alleged members of the Westside Crips criminal street gang to carry out drug deals and prostitution. Eleven alleged West Crips gangsters were also charged in crimes that prosecutors say took place from 2004 to 2016. Oza managed as “two national brand hotels”--Coast Inn and a Motel 6. Some of the gang members charged sold narcotics while others managed prostitutes and transported them all over the country, according to prosecutors.

How defective brain cells are spreading Alzheimer’s NEW YORK: Neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s may be linked to defective brain cells disposing toxic proteins, making neighboring cells sick, scientists say. The findings showed that although healthy neurons should be able to sort out and rid brain cells of toxic proteins and damaged cell structures, they are unable to do so always. “Normally the process of throwing out this trash would be a good thing,” said Monica Driscoll, professor at Rutgers University in New Jersey. “But we think with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s there might be a mismanagement of this very important process that is supposed to protect neurons but, instead, is doing harm to neighbor cells,” Driscoll added. To understand how the mechanism of eliminating toxic cellular substances works externally, the team conducted experiments on the transparent roundworm, known as the C. elegans, which are similar in molecular form, function and genetics to those of humans. The researchers discovered that the worms — which have a lifespan of about three weeks — had an

external garbage removal mechanism and were disposing these toxic proteins outside the cell as well. However, the roundworms engineered to produce human disease proteins associated with Huntington’s disease and Alzheimer’s, were found to throw out more trash consisting of these neurodegenerative toxic materials. While neighboring cells degraded some of the material, more distant cells scavenged other portions of the diseased proteins. “These finding are significant. The work in the little worm may open the door to much needed approaches to addressing neurodegeneration and diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s,” Driscoll said. —IANS

Early menstruation ups risk of stroke IANS, TOKYO

G LONDON: There’s good news for career women. Overturning conventional wisdom, a new study suggests that delaying pregnancy till age 35 can actually make your kids smarter. In contrast to 40 years ago, children born to older mothers today are more likely to perform better in cognitive ability tests than those born to younger mothers, said the study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology “Our research is the first to look at how the cognitive abilities of children born to older mothers have changed over time and what might be responsible for this shift,” said study lead author Alice Goisis, researcher at London School of Economics and Political Science. This shift is due to the changing characteristics of women who have children at an older age, the study said. —IANS

irls who start their periods at the age of 13 or younger may be nearly 1.8 times more likely to suffer a stroke than those who start at the age of 15, a study shows. These women are also more at risk for cerebral infarction, in

which a section of brain tissue dies due to reduced blood flow and oxygen. “Early menarche might predict the incidence of stroke rather than the mortality caused by stroke,” said Takayoshi Ohkubo, Professor at Tohoku University in Japan. In addition, women who stopped menstruating at 45 or

younger are also more likely to get cerebral infarction, but not stroke, compared to women who began menopause at the age of 50.

For the study, published in the journal Neuroepidemiology, the team followed a group of 1,412 postmenopausal women in Japan.

Feeling stressed? One should try prebiotics IANS, NEW YORK

F

inding it tough to cope with stress in your life? Eat prebiotics fibers that may help protect the beneficial bacteria in your gut and restore healthy sleep patterns after a stressful event, researchers suggest. Prebiotics are certain types of non-digestible fibers that probiotic bacteria feed on, such as the fibers found in many plant sources like asparagus, oatmeal, and legumes as well as in breast milk. The findings showed that stress could upset the gut’s microbiome, as well as restful sleep — essential elements for a healthy life.

“Acute stress can disrupt the gut microbiome,” said Agnieszka Mika, postdoctoral fellow at the

University of Colorado Boulder, in the US. A diet rich in prebiotics was found to increase beneficial

bacteria as well as protect gut microbes from stress-induced disruptions. In addition, prebiotics also lead to the recovery of normal sleep patterns, since they tend to be disrupted after stressful events. “So far no adverse effects from prebiotics have been reported...and they are found widely in many plants, even present in breast milk, and are already commercially available,” Mika added. For the study, the team tested rats that received prebiotic diets for several weeks prior to a stressful test condition and compared with control rats that did not receive the prebiotic-enriched diet.

Indian designers are getting noticed globally: Vaishali S NEW DELHI: Indian designer Vaishali Shadangule, who recently showcased her creations at the prestigious New York Fashion Week (NYFW), says that the need for original work and acceptance of new ideas is creating new space for Indian designers in the international market. “International fashion market is very open to accept new ideas and experiments and Indian designers are getting noticed globally. She says she is trying to explore different possibilities of

international expansion. “People are showing interest in the brand and I’m considering several aspects. To set a trend and establish an exclusive presence in the business international market is very important,” she said. “I think the best way to grow a brand is to keep building the maturity of your work. I have always tried to maintain that and the experience is very fulfilling. The challenges are part of the journey and strength and determination is the key to deal with that,” added the designer. Her label Vaishali S, launched in 2001, is a Mumbai-based brand. Her vision is to bring India’s centuries-old weaving technique to the forefront in the global fashion scene.

f you think your spouse is not watching Netflix shows in your absence, you are wrong. Fortysix per cent Indian couples — second only to Hong Kong — cheat on their significant other by binging ahead to watch Netflix shows, a new survey has revealed. Surprisingly, 39 per cent streaming couples in India even said watching 2-3 episodes ahead would be a reason for a breakup. Conducted by the online survey firm SurveyMonkey and involving 30,267 responses for on-demand streaming website Netflix, the report defines cheating as watching a TV show ahead of your signifi-

cant other. “In India where 79 per cent couples believe that streaming is a way to spend time together, almost 60 per cent of couples consider bing-

ing ahead as cheating and nearly half have even admitted to this ‘offence,’” the findings showed. The Indian culture has a reserved place for humor. So

ffering couples more reasons to celebrate love a new study has found that the married people face less psychological stress than unmarried individuals. Married individuals had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol than those who never married or were previously married, showed the study published in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology. Prolonged stress is associated with

increased levels of cortisol which can interfere with the body’s ability to regulate inflammation, which in turn promotes the development and

progression of many diseases. “It is exciting to discover a physiological pathway that may explain how relationships influence health and disease,” said one of the researchers Brian Chin from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, US. Over three non-consecutive days, the researchers collected saliva samples from 572 healthy adults aged 21-55. Multiple samples were taken during each 24-hour period and tested for cortisol.

unsurprisingly, 61 per cent of the couples cheat on comedy shows -higher than the global average of 44 per cent. “A third or more of Indian respondents have watched ahead on every other genre polled, including documentaries, sci-fi, fantasy, drama and horror,” the study noted. Netflix cheating in India is not intentional as 78 per cent of cheating is unplanned. It is the temptation that makes Indian couples fallible. Forty-three per cent of Indians ‘cheat’ out of ‘fear of missing out’ (FoMO) so that they could keep up with conversations with friends and co-workers.

‘I would like to do reality TV shows’ NEW DELHI: Fashion designer and TV personality Rohit Verma says he is keen to do a reality show like Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa or host a talk show on the small Rohit Verma screen. Verma has earlier been part of TV shows like Bigg Boss 3 and Zor Ka Jhatka: Total Wipeout. He was also seen in filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar’s 2008 film Fashion.
