majority of American voters have said that Donald Trump was not “fit to serve as the President”, according to a poll, with 51 per cent of respondents saying they were embarrassed to have him running the US. According to the Quinnipiac poll released, 59 per cent said Trump was not honest, 60 per cent said he does not have good leadership skills and 61 per cent said he does not share their values, reports Politico. Notably, voters said — 69 per cent to 26 per cent — that Trump should stop tweeting. The survey highlighted deep divisions along racial lines. Fifty per cent of white voters said Trump was fit to serve, while 94 per cent of black voters said he was not fit
Trump proposes sharp tax cuts WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump presented his tax reform plan, an ambitious proposal that includes lowering the corporate tax rate from 35 per cent to 20 per cent. The plan also eliminates the estate tax and reduces the number of tax brackets for individuals from seven to three: 12 per cent, 25 percent and 35 percent. The plan, entitled the “Unified Framework For Fixing Our Broken Tax Code,” was announced jointly by the White House and Republican lawmakers heading the House and Senate Ways and Means Committees and is the working document whereby the administration is seeking to craft the biggest US tax reform since 1980. Trump’s proposal reduces the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 20 percent, a little higher than the 15 per cent that the president had initially promised, reports Efe. “Too many in our country are shut out of the dynamism of the US economy, which has led to the justifiable feeling that the system is rigged against hardworking Americans,” the plan stated. “With significant and meaningful tax reform and relief, we will create a fairer system that levels the playing field and extends economic opportunities to American workers, small businesses, and middleincome families,” it added.

Trump for negotiation on healthcare law WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump this week said that he will negotiate with Democrats to move forward on a new healthcare law to replace ObamaCare. He announced that he was preparing an executive order to give people more freedom when buying medical insurance. Before flying to Indiana earlier this week, where he delivered a speech about his tax reform plan, Trump talked with reporters and insisted that the Republicans “have the votes” to approve a new healthcare law in Congress, Efe reported. “With one Yes vote in hospital & very positive signs from Alaska and two others (McCain is out), we have the HCare Vote, but not for Friday!” Trump had tweeted. The Republican leadership in the Senate has found itself forced to rule out a vote this week on the latest GOP plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, the signature legislation of former President Barack Obama, due to a lack of support on their side of the aisle. —IANS

‘Indian economy is in mess’ Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is working over-time to make sure that all Indians see poverty from close quarters, said BJP leader Yashwant Sinha IANS, NEW DELHI
S
enior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha has ruffled feathers in the ruling BJP with his strong critique on the state of Indian economy, saying it was headed for a “hard landing”. The government rejected the criticism while the Congress hailed his assessment. In an article in The Indian Express, Sinha, who was Finance Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government and is now estranged from the party, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi “claims he has seen poverty from close quarters (and) his Finance Minister (Arun Jaitley) is working over-time to make sure that all Indians also see it from equally close quarters”. Illustrating the picture of the economy today, Sinha said private investment had shrunk “as never

with “a badly conceived and poorly implemented GST” has played havoc with businesses and sunk many of them. Sinha said he was speaking about the mess after realizing that “I shall be failing in my national duty if I did not speak up even now”. “I am also convinced that (it) reflects the sentiments of a large number of people in the BJP and elsewhere who are not speaking up out of fear.” Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram lauded Sinha’s critique, saying he was absolutely correct when he wrote that “instilling fear in the minds of the people is name of the new game”. The government rejected Sinha’s criticism, saying the world acknowledged that India “is one of the fastest growing economies”.
Army attacks Naga insurgents NEW DELHI: The Indian Army on Wednesday said it inflicted “heavy casualties” on Naga insurgents during a firefight along the border with Myanmar but clarified it was not a surgical strike. The Army also said that its men did not cross the international border. Officials said the incident occurred when a column of the Indian Army was fired upon by “unidentified insurgents” close to the border in eastern Nagaland. But the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang claimed that three Indian soldiers were killed. The Indian Army’s Eastern Command denied this. “Reports of casualties to Indian Army personnel factually incorrect. Firefight occurred along Indo-Myanmar border at 0445 hrs,” the Eastern Command said. “Heavy casualties reportedly inflicted on NSCN-K cadre. No casualties suffered by Indian Security Force,” it said. —IANS

Reviving Congress is an uphill task Rahul Gandhi’s serious side may help him personally in attending to the Congress Party’s decline with renewed vigor MAYANK CHHAYA, CHICAGO
T
wo weeks of a wellorchestrated tour of the US may not be enough to determine whether Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi is a reflective and seriously analytical politician, as his supporters insist, or a privileged nincompoop, as social media so churlishly characterizes him. However, what it appears to have done somewhat successfully is lend him some sheen for the urban constituencies that have been missing in his public engagements in India. At the very least, the tour helped him reboot — even though it remains to be seen if all apps fire up subsequently. His visits to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Princeton and New York exposed him to a diversity of opinion makers but, put together, the audiences were no more than 5,000 people.
While the numbers do not necessarily tell the whole story, what they do say was that the attendees were mainly props to transmit a more credible message back home, where his voice is either instantly derided by a frenzied social media trolling culture, or ignored altogether. Unfortunately for Gandhi, the

political and policy communities in Washington left most of them rather impressed by his understated but substantive style. The image of Gandhi within these fraternities has been one of an absentee politician riding his family name. However, the Washington meetings
seemed to have changed that uncharitable point of view. Perhaps the most extensive policy-focused engagement that he had was in front of some 200 students at Princeton University where he displayed a grasp of broader economic, political, cultural and social trends.
Being traditional at Delhi’s oldest Durga Puja From maintaining the quintessential traditional one platform for goddess Durga to carrying the idol in a bullock cart for the immersion, this Puja stands out against the rest SOMRITA GHOSH, NEW DELHI
K
olkata might be the cynosure of Durga Puja celebrations, but not far behind is the national capital, which plays host to more than 350 pandals (marquees). And the Kashmere Gate Durga Puja has been continuing this yearly ritual for the past 108 years, making it Delhi’s oldest Puja. Its theme has always been traditional. From maintaining the quintessential “sabeki ek-chalathakur” (traditional one platform) goddess Durga to carrying the idol in a bullock cart for the “visarjan” (immersion), this Puja stands out against the rest. “The bullock cart visarjan is organized only by us. No other pandals organize such a procession in the national capital,” Samarendra Bose, a committee member of the Delhi Durga Puja Samiti, said. “And the Bhog! It is also a highlight of our celebration. Every year we feed the afternoon meal to around five to six thousand people. And on Ashtami (the eighth day), the turnout crosses more
The first Puja was organized in 1909 at the Roshanpura Kali Mandir near Nai Sarak. From 1913 to 1946, it used to be organized in a dharamshala near Fatehpuri Mosque. Later it was shifted to the Bengali Senior Secondary School at Alipur.
than 10,000. It’s a big responsibility on our shoulders and we make sure that everything goes smoothly during the Puja,” he said. There’s quite a history attached
to this Puja. Due to the efforts of an unnamed railway employee, the first Puja was organized in 1909 at the Roshanpura Kali Mandir near Nai Sarak. From 1913 to 1946,
the Puja used to be organized in a dharamshala (community hall) near Fatehpuri Mosque. Later it was shifted to the Bengali Senior Secondary School at Alipur Road
near Civil Lines but the nomenclature continued unchanged. “In the initial years, the idol used to be brought from Benaras, but from 1926, the idol began to be made in the city itself. And now it’s made within the school premises,” Bose stated. What hasn’t changed are the customs associated with the Puja. No matter how popular theme pujas are becoming, the Kashmere Gate Puja continues to be traditional. “Theme idols can never reflect the charm or the beauty of a traditional one. We don’t bring the idol from CR Park or Kolkata; rather it is made inside the school premises, like the way it happens in home Pujas,” Bose pointed out. For the five days the Puja lasts, the atmospheres within the pandal turns into a mini Bengal. From people clad in their traditional attire to cultural programs and, of course, Bengali’s favorite cuisine — biryani — turns it into a major draw. “We organize cultural programmes but only the local residents participate,” Bose said.

Hours after he touched down, the Taliban launched a rocket attack on the Kabul airport. Mattis was speaking at a joint press conference with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. “We will not abandon Afghanistan to a merciless enemy,” he said, referring to the persistent threat posed by the Taliban insurgency. “More US troops alongside additional allied contributions are making it clear we are not quitting this fight,” said Mattis. “Through our partnership, we will suffocate any hope to Al Qaeda, the Islamic State, Haqqani and Taliban have for winning by killing.” The visit by the US official and the NATO chief came after US

grant to the United States, I am particularly honored to be able to make a difference in people’s lives around the world,” he said. “This partnership will benefit thousands of patients, students and doctors,” added Dr. Pallavi Patel.
“Over the next 20 years, NSU will train thousands of new doctors and other health care professionals who will directly touch millions of lives, making a real difference.” Patel’s gift will provide support for equipment and the hiring of additional faculty and staff in the Tampa Bay area, as well as an endowment to sustain the operation of the college’s new location besides an endowed scholarship fund for students. Threatening to assault an umpire, making inappropriate and deliberate physical contact with an umpire, physically assaulting a player or any other person and committing any other act of violence will be deemed Level 4 offense — warranting marching orders. A player can now be sent off the field for the rest of the match if a Level 4 offense is committed. Level 1 to 3 offenses will continue to be dealt with under the ICC Code of Conduct. The same interpretation will also apply for a batsman trying to regain his/her ground to avoid being stumped. For boundary catches, airborne fielders making their first contact with the ball will need to have taken off from within the boundary. Otherwise a boundary will be deemed to be scored. IMPHAL: It is no mean achievement for Manipur that out of 21 footballers selected for the FIFA U-17 World Cup beginning from October 6 eight players are from the tiny northeastern state. All these players have a common denominator — in the form of unspeakable poverty. They could not get standard coaching as they could not afford the exorbitant fees. Most of them do not have balanced and nourishing diet and had to depend on the scratch meals provided by their daily wage earning parents. Most of the parents broke down while talking about the hardships in footing the bills. In normal circumstances the parents should have been upbeat since their sons will be playing in the World Cup championship. K. Mina uncontrollably wept while talking about her son, K. KOLKATA: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly batted for the new International Cricket Council (ICC) rule through which players can be ordered off the field if they commit major offenses. The ICC had announced that player can now be sent off the field for the rest of the match if a Level 4 offense is committed. Level 1 to 3 offenses will continue to be dealt with under the ICC Code of Conduct. “It was introduced by the MCC and there are reasons for that. Lot of difficult situations occurred in low

The ICC has also brought in changes in DRS rules by which a review will now not be lost in case a decision that remains unchanged, as the result of an ‘umpire’s call’. “As for DRS in Test matches, there will be no more top-up reviews (two reviews are added back for the teams after 80 overs), meaning that there can only be two unsuccessful reviews in each innings, while the DRS will now also be allowed to be used in T20Is,” the ICC said. The changes will commence from the two upcoming Test series — when South Africa hosts Bangladesh and the one between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the United Arab Emirates. The ICC playing conditions will now incorporate the relevant clauses from the MCC Laws of Cricket (2017 Code), meaning that all the playing regulations will be captured in one document for each format.

mentioning the terms of reference for the commission. The commission will submit its report in three months time. Ever since Jayalalithaa’s death, there have been hints of foul play in her death, with critics pointing fingers at her aide, the now jailed V.K. Sasikala. The AIADMK camp of Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam had laid down a probe into the death as one of its demands before merging the faction with that led by Chief Minister E. Palaniswami. Meanwhile earlier in the day Apollo Hospital Group Chairman Prathap C Reddy in Delhi said the hospital would cooperate with the inquiry commission.
Dr Babu K. Abraham, working in Apollo Hospitals, signed as a witness. Tracheostomy is a medical procedure whereby a direct airway is created by an incision in the windpipe enabling a person to breathe directly without the use of nose or mouth. Jayalalithaa was admitted to the hospital with fever and dehydration on September 22 and died after over 70 days in December.
‘Promote culture of excellence, innovation’ IANS, BENGALURU
V
ice President M. Venkaiah Naidu stressed on promoting the culture of excellence and innovation among young scientists in the country, stating that “innovation plays a key role in driving knowledge-based economy”. In his address at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) here, he said: “Over the last century, many illustrious and legendary scientists like Sir C.V. Raman and Dr. C.N.R. Rao have shaped this institute. Excellence has been the hallmark, and innovation the all pervading spirit of this institution.” “Innovation plays a key role in driving knowledge-based economy,” said Naidu, who was visiting the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering at the IISc as a part of his two-day visit to the southern state.

“This is the time for India to capitalize on its demographic advantage as 65 percent of the population is below 35,” he added. Young scientists must be encouraged to come out with “out-of-the-
box solutions or disruptive technologies” that will help in leapfrogging development, he said, calling for an ecosystem to be created in every scientific institution for excellence to be the touchstone and
directors and team leaders should make efforts in mentoring talented students and young scientists. From making India one of the leading powers in space technology to using technology for socio-economic development, urban planning, telecommunications and meteorological services Indian scientists have shown that they can rise to the occasion, Naidu said. “All this has been possible because of the quest for excellence,” he added. Quoting a survey released by scientific publishing company Springer Nature, he said that India ranked second amongst the countries with highest increase in contribution to high-quality scientific research just next to China last year. India has shown improvements in areas including infrastructure, business sophistication, knowledge and technology and creative outputs, he added.

he teaser of actor Abhay Deol’s maiden Tamil Idhu Vedhalam Sollum Kadhai, in which he plays King Vikramadithiyan, has finally been released. The one minute 13 seconds teaser introduces us to a secret society called Illuminati, a powerful organization that has been around for 500 years. directed by Rathindran R. Prasad. “He was so impressed with the script that he decided to come on board as the co-producer. The kind of encouragement we got from him was amazing,” Prasad had told IANS. He also clarified Abhay plays a cameo in the film.
“He plays a full-length character; a king called Vikramadityan, and he will dub his own lines in Tamil. He will be seen in the flashback portion which has a period set-up. It’s a road action thriller laced with fantasy,” he said, adding Abhay lost ten kg for a toned look.
MUMBAI: Filmmaker A.R. Murugadoss has welcomed Abhay Deol to the Tamil film industry. The actor is making his debut with Idhu Vedhalam Sollum Kadhai. Murugadoss took to Twitter to welcome Abhay and unveiled the look and teaser of the film earlier this week. “Welcome to Tamil film industry Abhay Deol and happy to reveal Idhu Vedhalam Sollum Kadhai look and here is the teaser,” Murugadoss tweeted. Abhay, who has worked in films like Socha Na Tha, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, Dev D, Zindagi Na Mile-
gi Dobara and Aisha, thanked the filmmaker for the welcome. “Thank you so much sir A.R. Murugadoss. I am proud of this one, and the people A.R. Murugadoss who made it happen. Thanks for your support,” the actor replied. Idhu Vedhalam Sollum Kadhai is a fantasy film directed by Rathindran R. Prasad. The film also features Ashwin Kakumanu and Aishwarya Rajesh.
Disha Patani may play Tamil version of ‘Queen’ launched lead in ‘Sangamithra’ IANS, CHENNAI
CHENNAI: Actress Disha Patani is likely to play the lead in upcoming Tamil historic drama Sangamithra, according to a source from the film’s unit. Disha has been signed as the replacement for actress Shruti Haasan, who was originally supposed to be a part of the project. “Disha has been signed for the project. To be directed by Sundar C under Sri Thenandal Films, the film will be released in Telugu and Hindi too. “It will be simultaneously made in
Telugu. In Hindi, however, it will be made with an entirely different cast and the process will take time,” he said. The film, which will also star Jayam Ravi and Arya, will Disha Patani have music by renowned A.R. Rahman. The project was launched amidst fanfare at the Cannes International Film Festival. On signing the project, Rahman told IANS: “It’s a an ambitious film. Six months ago, as I heard 30 minutes of the narration, it was good enough for me to come on board.”

The story will be set in Virudhunagar and will travel to Paris and
then Barcelona and London. Kajal Aggarwal said she will treat the film in her own way. “We are adapting the film in Tamil. I’m not here to fill in anyone’s shoes. I’ll treat this film as an original, in my own way. It’s going to be a very special project,” the actor said. Besides, the film will have dialogues and songs by Tamizhachi Thangapandian. The project, which marks the southern debut of composer Amit Trivedi, will be produced by Mediente Entertainment and Liger. ‘Spyder’: Brings the thrill back into the thriller
T
here is nothing like a perfect spy thriller. But Spyder comes close. It is svelte, swanky and slick in a way that Telugu cinema is lately learning to be. Most important of all, the leading man none other than Mahesh Babu, arguably Andhra’s number one star, plays it so cool, he is almost the antithesis of Prabhas’ sweaty overexertve performance in Baahubali. An intrinsic aptness is applied to this film about intelligence and espionage. Though there are wide passages of unbelievable visual spectacle and plot twists that coil and recoil through a maze of unrepentant incredulity, there is

‘Spyder’ comes close to perfection.
nonetheless at the core of Spyder a yarn that induces an adrenaline rush in the audience while it rushes to go where angels fear to tread.
Spyder, for all its overweening ambitions to keep the proceedings as real as possible, never quite manages to avoid the outrageous. There is a creeping tension enveloping the lengthy narrative. Though the film is two and half hours long, the length never sits uneasily on the narrative. Some passages in the screenplay are sheer ingenuity masquerading as
masala fare. The post-intermission episode where Mahesh Babu playing a government surveillance agent, takes the help of televisionaddicted housewives to nab the terrorist, is a work of sheer genius. And the way the hero saves his mother and kid-brother from the sadistic villain has to be seen to be believed. Innovative writing in Indian cinema is hard to come by. One that synthesizes thrills with a certain sobriety so effectively is rare. Murugadoss’ writing is always ahead of his (considerable) skills as a director. Every episode is written with a precise intent and pulverizing purpose. — Subhash K. Jha

BY ZOFEEN MAQSOOD American filmmaker and screenwriter Jennifer Reeder is in love with Devon Avenue in Chicago. The talented director who is out with her movie Signature Move, starring Indian actor Shabana Azmi feels that Devon Avenue, a hub of South Asians in Chicago is a delicious slice of diversity in America. Reeder who shot a movie across various locations in Devon Avenue laments the fact that not enough directors choose this as a location for their filming. She talks to Hi India about directing a story about a South Asian family, working with Shabana Azmi and why she can never get tired of the sights and smells of this South Asian neighborhood.
DEVON AVENUE IS A PERFECT SPOT FOR FILMING IN CHICAGO-
JENNIFER REEDER, FILM DIRECTOR
Reeder who has been artfully telling stories that provoke attention to causes was noticed early in her career when she worked on White Trash Girls – a film that explored the lower income white culture in America. Her other works too have significantly brought to the spotlight issues that matter to minorities. But talking about her latest directorial debut and dabbling with the subject as sensitive as a woman’s alternate sexual orientation in South Asian culture, Reeder says, “The story was written by Fawzia Mirza who also plays the part of Shabana Azmi’s daughter in the movie. The film draws from her own life and experiences of being in Chicago and embracing the experiences that come along.”
Director Jennifer Reeder has been extremely busy ever since her latest movie Signature Move has been out. The film that has been doing the rounds of various international film circuits in the recent past was also shown in Chicago as a pre festival screening at the ongoing South Asian Film Festival in the city. The film that has been garnering critical acclaim because it sensitively picks on an unusual subject to tell a story about a South Asian family. The story revolves around a mother daughter duo where the mum played marvelously by Shabana Azmi comes to terms with her daughters’ alternate sexuality as the daughter deals with the responsibility of owning up her choices. Depicted as a Pakistani family living in Chicago the characters infuse those nuances that most South Asians families watching the movie would relate to. The film is also significant because of another important reason. In between its characterization and portrayals of its central characters, Signature Move also packs in the essence of what life is like for an immigrant and a first generation migrant in America. By telling a powerful story the film manages to bring to the fore the lives and cultures of millions of South Asians living in America. The movie is entirely shot in Chicago and the entire cast and crew is also from the city except for Shabana Azmi who came all the way from India to film her part. For those familiar with the city, the movie would make for an interesting viewing as one gets to catch glimpses of various ethnic minority neighborhoods throughout the movie.
Reeder who directed the film feels it was natural for her to shoot this film in Chicago also because the city has one of the highest concentrations of South Asians in America. Reeder is herself based in Chicago and has many feathers in her cap. She directed a short film A Million Miles in 2014, that got nominate for a Tiger Award for Short Films at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Her movies have been screened at prestigious festivals around the world including the Sundance Film Festival in the US and Moderna Museet at Stockholm Sweden.
FILMING AT DEVON Reeder who lives in Chicago is especially excited about the fact that the movie was filmed in certain locations across the city, which is not shown enough in movies. She says, “A lot of Hollywood as well as Bollywood
films are shot in Chicago but all we get to see is the downtown area. I believe neighborhoods like Devon and Rogers Park that have high concentration of South Asians and Hispanics respectively are such vibrant, bustling areas of our country that perfectly sum up what a melting pot of cultures America is.” Talking about filming in Devon Reeder says, “It was obvious that we would include Devon in the movie as the story is about a South Asian family in Chicago. It was important to perfectly bring in those sights and smells that are so peculiar and the area was a perfect backdrop.” But besides providing a homogenous atmosphere for the story to fit in, Reeder also had an exceptionally entertaining time filming in the area. She recalls, “When ever we had a sequence to film in Devon we would make it a point to order catered lunch from the excellent eateries there.” She adds, “The set would become even livelier as we would snack on samosas and chai while wrecking our brains on how to get the best outcome.”
THE MOVIE IS SHOT ENTIRELY IN CHICAGO AND SHOWS THE SOUTH ASIAN NEIGHBORHOOD AS WELL AS HISPANIC LOCALITY OF THE CITY IN AN EXTREMELY ROMANTIC WAY

THE ENTIRE CAST AND CREW OF SIGNATURE MOVE IS ALSO FROM THE CITY EXCEPT FOR SHABANA AZMI WHO CAME ALL THE WAY FROM INDIA TO FILM HER PART Reeder also appreciates the unique identity of the place and still how various cultures and practices fit into the American life. She is also partial about various stores in Devon that stock marvelous stuff that is so reminiscent of South Asian identities. She recalls a particular incident that occurred during the filming of the movie. She says, “For the last sequence of the movie I was taken to Sahil a bridal shop in Devon. Even though I am not a very bangles and glitter kind of a girl but I was left mesmerized at the colors, textures, designs and vibrancy of this store that stocked such

splendid outfits. For me it was a representation of an entire culture. While I was there I was transported to another land and everything from the fabrics to the intricate patterns spoke to me about the culture. the easy blending of cultures that, in itself goes on to tell an important story about America. IMMIGRANT LIVES On whether the South Asian viewers would have a tough time connecting with the difficult theme of the movie, Reeder is hopeful. She says, “There are so many aspects
FOR THE LAST SEQUENCE OF THE MOVIE I WAS TAKEN TO SAHIL A BRIDAL SHOP IN DEVON. FOR ME IT WAS A REPRESENTATION OF AN ENTIRE CULTURE. WHILE I WAS THERE I WAS TRANSPORTED TO ANOTHER LAND AND EVERYTHING FROM THE FABRICS TO THE INTRICATE PATTERNS SPOKE TO ME ABOUT THE CULTURE. WE ENDED UP SPENDING MUCH MORE THAN THE INTENDED TIME AT THE STORE AND IT HAS LEFT QUITE AN IMPRESSION IN MY MIND – JENNIFER REEDER in the film that are relatable for many South Asians. Whether they want to catch a story about South Asian and Mexican protagonist or they want to come to watch Shabana Azmi the fact that they could think that a dialogue is possible about the subject will be a great start.” The director feels it is also imperative that more films are shown with minority perspectives. The film not only talks about the issue of sexuality but also shows the protagonist as an immigrant lawyer from Pakistan. Her mother watches Urdu soap operas and yearns for her language. All these
subtleties bring in a nuanced depiction of immigrant lives in the movie. On working with Shabana, Reeder says, “It was extremely gratifying to have her play the part. She added so much dimension to the character and it is easy for audiences to relate with her and fall in love with her.” She adds, “She is also an extremely engaging actor. She shared with us great stories and most of all she believes in working on projects that matter makes her a very respected actor.” While this is the first time that Reeder has worked with a Bollywood star has she also watched a bit of Bollywood? Jennifer shares, “It may look unlikely for me as a white girl from Chicago to be interested in Bollywood but I am a big Bollywood fan. I love to watch those dance sequences and those heartfelt stories. I have seen a lot of Bollywood movies and I can watch many of those delightful stories over and over again.
I CAN SPEND HOURS JUST WALKING AROUND IN DEVON AVENUE. EVERYTHING FROM THE SMELL OF THE SAMOSAS IN THE AIR TO THE RICH STOCK OF GROCERY AT PATEL STORE TELLS US A SIGNIFICANT STORY OF LIVES OF THOSE WHO CAME FROM FAR BUT HAVE MADE AMERICA THEIR HOME

‘Not a hint of plagiarization’ After all the buzz on India’s official entry for the Oscars, ‘Newton’ producer Marco Mueller has said that there is definitely no rip-off from our film 'Secret Ballot' IANS, MUMBAI
P
roducer Marco Mueller feels that there was not even a hint of plagiarization in Rajkummar Rao’s Newton, amidst claims that the movie has been inspired from his 2001 Iranian film Secret Ballot. Newton has been announced as India’s official entry for Oscars’ foreign language film category. This week, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, in a Facebook post, shared Muller’s opinion after watching Newton. “A pretty decent film, definitely no rip off from our Secret Ballot (even if the general concept is the same)” and then I asked him if I can share his response on social media? He replied, “Please feel free as you see fit, there is not even a hint of plagiarization,” Kashyap, who spoke in defense of the film, posted. He also shared the screen-
BRIEFS Delhi HC acquits ‘Peepli Live’ director NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court this week acquitted Mahmood Farooqui, co-director of acclaimed 2010 film Peepli Live, who was accused of raping an American woman. Justice Ashutosh Kumar set aside the trial court order convicting Farooqui and sentencing him to seven years jail in August last year. Farooqui had challenged the trial court order in the High Court claiming his innocence. The alleged incident occurred on March 28, 2015.
‘Have full faith in Hrithik’s capabilities’ MUMBAI: Patna based mathematician Anand Kumar says he is confident that actor Hrithik Roshan, who has been locked to reprise the genius’ story on screen, will be able to do full justice to the part. There was speculation around the casting of the biopic of Kumar, who is the founder of educational programme Super 30. But producers have made it official that Hrithik has been signed to play the math genius. “I have full faith in his capabilities,” Kumar said in a statement. The biopic, which is being helmed by Vikas Bahl, will showcase the life of the mathematician, who trains 30 deserving, economically backward students for IIT-JEE each year. —IANS
MUMBAI: Rajkummar Rao is excited as his new film Newton has been announced as India’s official entry for the Oscars. The actor says that he will call super- Rajkummar Rao star Aamir Khan for the advice on its promotion. When asked about his team strategy to promote Newton at the Oscars, Rajkummar said: “It’s just got announced and its too soon to decide but our team is going to meet and we will plan something about it because there has to be strategy. winner from Berlin fest and I can promise you those curators watch more films in a year than rest of us do in a lifetime.” While Newton, which stars National Award-winning actor Rajkummar Rao, revolves around a government employee who struggles to supervise voting in a forest area of Chhattisgarh, controlled by Maoists, Secret Ballot is described as a movie which focuses on the life of a lady ballot officer who visits a barren and desolate place to plead with voters to cast their votes and take part in the elections. Newton director Amit.V. Masurkar has already given his take on the controversy, saying: “The story was born from my heart. I had no idea about Secret Ballot.” Meanwhile, meeting the film team’s expectations, Newton is attracting audiences to theaters.

‘Newton’: A simple, realistic eye-opener
L
ow-concept and modestlyscaled films are always hard to sell, but authentic passion and a steady accumulation of detail, sets writers Amit Masurkar and Mayank Tiwari’s Newton apart. Set against the backdrop of elections in the world’s largest democracy, Newton is an exemplary indie drama. It is the portrait of an idealistic man surviving in a society that is corrupt by tradition and lethargy. Wanting to make a difference in society and to standout, Nutan Kumar (RajKummar Rao) who has completed his Masters in Physics, rechristens himself as Newton. He is now working for the Indian government. During elections,

despite being a “reserve” (standby) he is named the presiding officer of a booth situated deep in the jungles
where 76 voters reside. The area is purported to be infested with Maoists. How Newton deals with the administration and the security forces to conduct the elections there despite the constant threat of an ambush from the Naxalites, forms the crux of the tale. Projected in a fair and balanced manner, Newton’s journey is truly
an eye-opener. Initially, his gullibility is suspect, it borderlines to stupidity but Rajkummar Rao as Newton carries it with elan. You chuckle at his idiosyncrasies and conversations with his superiors and counterparts, especially when he attempts to conduct the elections by the book during the absurd circumstances. But it is his sincerity that touches the right emotional chord. It throws open questions about the democratic procedures adopted in the area and its projection by the administration to the media and the world thereby. Rao is aptly supported by Anjali Patil as his assistant during the election process.

ctress Richa Chadha wonders why people assume she is angry by nature, and says she is only a straight-forward person who speaks her mind. Richa interacted with media persons here on Saturday during the on-location shoot of her upcoming film Jia Aur Jia. Asked why she often lands up having arguments with the media, Richa said: “I don’t get angry. I am a straightforward person and I always speak my mind, but I feel media is no less either. “Since I am a straight forward person, people often assume that I am angry by nature especially when you play a character like Bholi Punjaban from Fukrey, who is very outspoken. So, it makes a certain kind of image of an actor, but I am not like that.” Clarifying her stand, Richa said: “I feel image is not selfmade. It’s not my problem that people don’t remember me for films like Masaan, but they only remember me for film like Fukrey. I have done both kind of films, so audience sees you in a certain kind of image and identify you with that kind of image only.”

NEW YORK: Researchers have identified a mechanism that leads to bone loss in older adults, an advance that may help develop therapeutics to treat the age-associated bone loss condition. Osteoporosis — the thinning of bone and the loss of bone density that increases the risk of fractures — is a major health problem in older people. Often the condition is accompanied by an increase in fat cells in the bone marrow. The study led by Yi-Ping Li, Professor, University of Alabama at Birmingham, found a protein called Cbf-beta that plays a critical role in maintaining bone-producing cells.
One in five US teens suffers Anti-dengue antibody may fight Zika from concussion, says study IANS, WASHINGTON
CHICAGO: Researchers from the University of Michigan found that one out of five teens in the US reported at least one concussion diagnosis, and 5.5 percent of them have had more than one concussion, according to a new study released this week. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), also indicated that teens playing contact sports, which emphasize or require physical contact between players, are more likely to suffer from concussions. Among all the adolescents included in this study, the findings showed that 19.5 percent of teenagers who’ve been playing one of the 21 different sports in the past 12 months, reported at least one diagnosed concussion in their lifetime, Xinhua reported.
A
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, concussions can lead to headaches, nausea and irritability, while between 10 and 20 percent may experience symptoms like depression, headaches or difficulty concentrating. The findings come at a time as interest in concussions among professional athletes, especially those in the National Football League, has increased in the US.
n anti-dengue antibodybased drug could potentially protect a mother and her foetus from the deadly Zika virus as well, suggests new research. In experiments with mice, the researchers found that an antibody that protects against dengue virus is also effective against Zika. “We found that this antibody not only neutralizes the dengue virus but, in mice, protects both adults and foetuses from Zika disease,” said Michael Diamond, Professor at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and senior author of the study published in the journal Nature Immunology. Antibodies remain in the bloodstream for weeks, so one or a few doses of an antibody-based drug given over the course of a woman’s pregnancy potentially could pro-
tect her foetus from Zika, with the added benefit of protecting her from both Zika and dengue disease, the researchers said. Dengue causes high fever, severe headaches, and joint and muscle pain in children and adults but does not directly harm foetuses. Since dengue and Zika are related viruses, the researchers reasoned that
an antibody that prevents dengue disease may do the same for Zika. The findings suggested that for the antibody to effectively protect foetuses from Zika infection, it must be administered soon after infection. The researchers have a version of the antibody that would be therapeutic against both viruses and safe for use in a dengue-endemic area.

oga is a great healer and contributor to improving strength, flexibility and endurance, but wrong yoga poses can make your daily life difficult instead of easy, say experts. Minakshi Fullara, Chief Consultant, Physiotherapy, Aakash Healthcare, said overdoing it or doing it in the wrong manner can lead to acute injuries, chronic pain, overuse strain and hamstring pull.
Certain asanas of yoga like Paschimottanasana involves direct bending of spine in seated or longstanding position without bending of knees. This in turn puts direct load on spine giving it “C” shape and creating tension on ligaments and joint stability leading to severe disc prolapses and hip joint disorders. So, always consider postural alignment, biomechanical stresses on joints and soft tissues and functional anatomical position while practising any yogic asana.
According to experts, wrong yoga poses can make your daily life difficult.
Wrist injuries are other most common things to happen when certain posture of yoga demand support from wrist. Rotator cuff injuries are common to occur if biomechanical alignment is not appropriate while practising body weight on arms,
resulting in excessive strain on rotator cuff muscles and thus, affecting shoulder dynamics. To avoid these injuries: Get yourself assessed thoroughly by a physical therapist for your flexibility, core strength, joint mobility and learn properly before performing.
Good relationships can boost your career IANS, NEW YORK

haring a good relationship with friends and family can boost confidence and keep you motivated to achieve greater personal goals. The findings support the “I-through-We” perspective, which means the social tendency to connect with others, and the individual tendency to strive and grow as individuals, are not mutually exclusive and may augment and magnify each other. For the study, researchers used data from samples from the US and Japan to determine if personal
growth is an outcome of an individual’s traits or the positive relationships they have with others. “The more supportive people
judged their relationships to be, the higher their personal growth tendencies,” said the study’s lead author David Lee, a postdoctoral fellow at
Ohio State University in the US. “In other words, relationships do not necessarily conflict with but help sustain one’s personal growth,” Oscar Ybarra, Professor at the University of Michigan, said in a statement released by the university. In one experiment, about 200 participants were randomly assigned to one of three relationship conditions: supportive, nonsupportive and neutral. In the two main conditions, some had to consider a person in their life with whom they felt comfortable (or not) and did not worry (did worry) about being abandoned by them.

community news/EAST COAST soon to hunt Relief for widow of hate crime victim Crackdown immigrants FRIDAY, 29 SEPTEMBER, 2017
BY A STAFF WRITER LATHE, KS -- The widow of an Indian American engineer who was fatally shot at a suburban Kansas City bar in an alleged hate crime was facing deportation until a Kansas congressman and others stepped in to help her get a one-year visa. Sunayana Dumala lost her US resident status after the death of her husband, Srinivas Kuchibhotla, in a February 22 shooting at Austins Bar & Grill in Olathe, Kansas. Witnesses said the gunman shouted racial slurs before opening fire. Kuchibhotla’s friend and another man who intervened were wounded. Republican US Rep. Kevin Yoder said he was infuriated when he heard Dumala, who lives in Olathe, faced deportation and was worried she could not return to the US after she traveled to India for her husband’s funeral. The visa allows her to continue working at an area marketing agency. “We are not going to deport the widow

W of the victim of a hate crime,” Yoder said, adding that he would continue working to help her secure permanent residency. Dumala, also a native of India, has lived in the US for 10 years. She married Kuchibhotla, a technical engineer, in 2012, and they applied for a green card on his work visa. His death means her efforts
to get a green card must start over (start again). Yoder said he hopes the Fairness for HighSkilled Immigrants Act will raise awareness for immigration changes, particularly in the light of President Donald Trump’s recent decision to ask Congress to pass a law to replace the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
$25,000 reward for clue on murder BY A STAFF WRITER APLE SHADE, NJ -- A $25,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons involved in the murder of Indian American software engineer Sasikala Narra and her six-year-old son, Anish, who were found dead in their Maple Shade, New Jersey, apartment on March 23. Narra, 38, and Anish were found slain in the bedroom of their home by Narra’s husband, Hanumantha Rao. Both mother and son had been stabbed multiple times, Joel Bewley, spokesman for the Burlington County. “We’re hoping that this reward would be an incentive for someone to come forward with information,” said Bewley, noting that the investigation was “very active and ongoing.” Police have been going door to door in the community where Narra and her husband Hanumantha Rao lived with their son, passing out flyers offering the reward printed in Hindi, Telugu, Spanish, and English. Bewley thanked the Indian Cultural Center in Evesham, New Jersey, for helping to translate the flyers into Hindi and Telugu.
BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC – The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans to conduct raids to target immigrants across America later this month. The raids, called ‘Operation Mega,’ will target all people “prioritized in the President’s January 25 Executive Order,” Detention Watch Network (DWN) said in a media statement reported. Criticizing the agency’s plan, DWN said, “DWN, the National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC), National Immigration Law Center, United We Dream (UWD) and the Women’s Refugee Commission (WRC) condemn Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) plan to conduct a nationwide immigration enforcement operation from mid- to late-September.” Thousands of immigrants are likely to be deported after massive raids on undocumented immigrants across the country. Elaborating on the extent of the raids, it said, “These raids are intended to be historic in size, targeting between 6,000 and 10,000 immigrants.” The organization said the planned raids are part of Trump administration’s aim to implement anti-immigrant policies. “Operation Mega is a cynical attempt by ICE to manipulate the congressional appropriations process. It is no coincidence that this operation is planned for the last weeks of the government’s fiscal year. ICE is intentionally elevating detention numbers before the new fiscal year to claim an ‘operational need’ for more funding and more detention beds,” said Silky Shah, executive director of DWN. Shah said that even some members of the Congress, who have otherwise condemned ICE attacks against immigrants, have actually voted in favor to fund ICE for these attacks.

Sasikala Narra with son Anish
Rao found the bodies of his wife and son on the evening of the murder, and called 911. He told dispatchers he did not know what had happened, as he had just returned home after “happy hour” after work with some of his coworkers from Cognizant. Rao was believed to have been having an affair with Deepa Ajit, who also works at Cognizant’s office in India. Narra had allegedly confronted her husband about Ajit:
Rao allegedly told his wife there was no harm in an extramarital affair. Both Rao and Ajit were questioned by the police after Sasikala and Anish’s bodies were found. The Telugu Association of North America raised funds to have their bodies returned to Vijayawada for the final rites. Rao did not attend the funeral of his wife and son, though his passport had not been confiscated.

Stricter rules for visitors’ visas W BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- The State Department has released changes to its foreign policy manual that tighten rules for people entering the United States on nonimmigrant–specifically tourist–visas. “This was a process of taking a closer look at visa ineligibilities and making sure that people follow the rules we have in place and that we apply our rules consistently and correctly,” a spokesman of the State Department said. “It is tightening existing rules to make sure people don’t misuse their visas,” he said, adding: “This is about people entering the US saying they’ll do one thing and then doing another, such as making misrepresentations to get visas, without proper authorization.” Those violating the ‘90-Day Rule’ could be ineligible for a new visa, a renewal or a change of status. Those who continue to remain in the US would face deportation. Examples of such misrepresentations include people coming in on visitors’ visas–B1 and B2–and then immediately beginning to work within the first 90 days. Others who enter on tourist visas and then enroll in a university would also be exhibiting “a clear intent to misrepresent.” People entering the country as visitors and
White House deputy national security adviser Benjamin J. Rhodes
getting married within three months would also be considered as intending to fraud the system, said the spokesman, noting that a K1 visa allows US permanent residents or citizens to sponsor one’s fiancé. “If someone comes to the US as a tourist, falls in love and gets married within 90 days and then applies for a green card, this means
the application would be denied,” Diane Rish, associate director of government relations at the American Immigration Lawyers Association, told reporters. “This is a significant policy change.” Those who take up a US residence within 90 days are also in violation of the proviso of their tourist visa, clarified the State Department.
Indian couple donates $250k for storm relief BY A STAFF WRITER OUSTON, TX -- An Indian American couple from Houston Amit Bhandari and his wife Arpita Brahmbhatt Bhandari has donated $250,000 to the Houston mayor’s fund for Hurricane Harvey relief. The couple, who hosted the private event on September 23, handed over the fund to Mayor Sylvester Turner on behalf of the Greater Houston Community Foundation. “I want to thank the Indian Americans for what you have done prior to Hurricane Harvey. I want to thank you for what you are doing now, and I want thank you for what you will be doing to help rebuild this great city,” the mayor said while addressing the audience during the event. “We will rebuild, we will be stronger, more resilient, and better prepared for next time around.” Consul General of India in Houston Dr. Anupam Ray, entrepreneur Gaurav Khandelwal and other leading members of
“If an alien violates or engages in conduct inconsistent with his or her non-immigrant status within 90 days of entry, you may presume that the applicant’s representations about engaging in only status-compliant activity were willful misrepresentations of his or her intention in seeking a visa or entry,” noted the State Department in a cable dispatched to all US embassies abroad. “If an alien violates or engages in conduct inconsistent with his or her nonimmigrant status more than 90 days after entry into the United States, no presumption of willful misrepresentation arises,” noted the State Department in its memo, clarifying, however, that consular officials who believe the applicant did lie on his application could call for a review. In related news, India has a particularly high rate of people overstaying a B1/B2 tourist visa, according to data released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in May. For the fiscal year 2016, more than 1 million tourist visas were granted to people from India. An estimated 17,763 people initially overstayed their visas, with about 15,000 continuing to remain in the country. In FY 2015, almost 900,000 visas were allotted to visitors from India; more than 14,000 initially overstayed their visas, with an estimated 13,000 continuing to remain in the country.

the community present at the event pledged more funds. Bhandari is the founder and chairman of Biourga Group, which is an energy and agricultural commodity trading company. Hurricane Harvey has killed at least 81
people, including two Indian students, and some 13,000 people had been rescued across the Texas state while about 30,000 were displaced. At least 150,000 Indian Americans who reside in and around Houston have been impacted by the storm.
Indian dies in house fire BY A STAFF WRITER UEENS, NY -- Indian American Mohinvei Singh, 68, died in a house fire in Queens on September 24 at the corner of 97th Avenue near 107th Street, in Ozone Park. Singh went to the basement after he saw smoke coming into his first-floor bedroom and “never came back.” Singh’s son, Belkarn Singh, who also woke up to a smoke-filled bedroom, went to go looking for his dad but “he couldn’t find him,” said Raman Deol, Singh’s son-in-law, who was forced to give up his search amid the choking smoke. Sandeep Kaur, a second-floor tenant of the three-story home, also awoke to find thick smoke flooding the hallways. “I went to the kitchen to check the stove, but I couldn’t turn on the light. None of the power was on. My first thought was to get out of the house. I didn’t have a chance to grab my shoes.”
Q
Residents who lived upstairs said that they saw sparks flying outside. “We saw sparkling on the electric pole and then a flash come from our AC. I saw the sparks outside and we came running out,” said Harish Kumari, who lives on the third floor with two of his cousins.
The fire began in the home’s basement breaker box at around 2:30 am and was brought under control at 3:40 am. Singh arrived from Punjab, India, more than 30 years ago and drove cabs for two decades. Singh is survived by his wife Jasbeer Kaur, two daughters, son and four grandchildren.
BY A STAFF WRITER OT SPRINGS, AK -- Former convenient store owner Sunny Ghotra Singh on September 18 pleaded guilty to felony charges stemming from a 2016 home invasion incident and illegal gambling operation at his store in Arkansas. Singh (25), who is in the US as part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, pleaded guilty to residential burglary and keeping a gambling house and was sentenced to five years in prison on each count, to run concurrently. Additional charges the Indian American faced, including aggravated robbery and possession of a controlled substance, marijuana, with purpose to deliver, were withdrawn. The prosecutor said Singh is facing time in federal prison and then will be deported back to his native India. It was Singh’s DACA status that caught the attention of investigators with Homeland Security and the 18th Judicial District East Drug Task Force (DTF) after Singh reportedly shot a burglar allegedly trying to take money from the register at the Mountain Pine Corner Store on December 4, 2016. Singh was not charged in connection with the shooting, but under the DACA program he is not allowed to possess a firearm. The DTF searched the store on January 31, assisted by sheriff’s investigators, Homeland Security, Arkansas State Police, Hot Springs police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

Doc couple’s gesture for medical studies
BY AJAY AGNIHOTRI golden-hearted couple of Tampa, Florida has rightly decided to spend its hard-earned money wisely, and how! Dr Kiran Patel committed $50 million in a cash donation and another $150 million toward the real estate the Patel family will control. The donation is among the largestever individual financial commitment to an educational institute. The $50-million endowment is toward the future of many young, budding doctors who will be attending Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Dr Patel, a cardiologist born in Zambia and educated in England as well as India, migrated to the United States in 1976 and moved to Florida where his other family members were already in business. He earned his fortune in medical practice and acquired a health care company, Well Care Health Plans, turned it around and sold for more than $ 200 million in a couple of years. Despite being a medical doctor, Dr Patel dabbled in many other fields--real estate development, hotel, educational institutes in India and the US. He is a visionary and aggressive investor as also a task master and denied going into politics, while talking to Hi India. He explained that he has set a very high-standard bar and is bent on working for it and striving to achieve that. For him, to get to the goal is his way or highway for himself and others associated with his many projects. Dr Patel wishes to touch the lives, health and emotions of a number of people through his philanthropy. He is also managing another Tampa-based health care company, Freedom Health, estimated to be worth millions of dollars. He is all set to develop a real estate infrastructure and other teaching facilities at Tampa, Florida for which NSU will be a partner to provide curriculum and academic teaching staff. The infrastructure will be ready by 2019. Once the institute will be
A
ready, it will have 400 medical doctors graduating from it. Additionally, Dr Patel will also set up a university campus near Vadodara, Gujarat

in India on a 40-hectare of plot of land. Dr Patel, however, is skeptical about red tapism in India, especially the Medical Council of India. He was confident about his project as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is at the helm of the ‘Make in India’ and the ‘Move to India’ missions. By having control of two medical institutions in the US and India, he plans to cross-train students and doctors about the global standards and advancements in health care. Dr Patel visualizes that once the Indian University starts, it will produce 300 medical graduates every year. The Patels with a heart in the right place, indeed, have been donating funds for many noble causes for the past many
years. Some of their enviable philanthropic gestures include: 1. March 2017 -- $5 million to Florida Hospital, Carrollwood to fund emergency and cardiology department. 2. October 2012 -- $12 million to transform a University of South Florida graduate program into USF’s Patel College of Global Sustainability. 3. May 2005 -- $18.5 million to USF, combined with $16 million in state grants to establish Dr Kiran Patel center for Global Solutions. development, safety and the environment. 4. March 2005 -- $3 million to Pepin Heart Hospital & Research Institute. 5. December 2004 -- Donated and raised more than $2 million for the victims of Tsunami in India and rehabilitation in Pondicherry, India. 6. October 2002 -- $5 million for Dr Pallavi Patel Performing Arts Conservatory at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. 7. March 2000 -- $450,000 for the construction of a charter school in University of South Florida. As per the statistics from the National Chronicle of Philanthropy, which keeps track of major donations, the Patel couple’s $ 200-million pledge is among the top 27 major donations to a US university since 2000. The $50-million donation has taken the University’s current count up to $212 million. The pledge of $150 million worth of real estate and infrastructure is a unusual gift of its kind. Self-effacing Dr Patel not only donates huge funds for good causes but also keeps his promise of implementing the pledge. For example, he will make sure that infrastructure is provided to University by 2019 as promised. In fact, there are many challenges for construction as there is an acute shortage of skilled workers but he seems to be the least worried and is confident of handing over the campus on time. On September 23, Dr Patel addressed medical students of first year and second year and also participated in the white-coat ceremony wherein the new students don the white coat--a symbol of professionalism, honesty, integrity and care for patients. Dr Watson declared that Dr Patel is the first person from the Indian American heritage to pledge and participate. Dr Patel while addressing the students said that medical profession is a journey and not a destination.
“You have to tread your own path and leave a trail for others to follow in future,” he said. While advising to the first-year entrants, Dr Patel said that listen to patient, focus on patient and perform medical practice as an art, and not as a business. The Dr Patel also makes headlines sometimes as he is constructing a huge residence in Tampa, FL with more than 65,000 square feet of construction. The construction of the house has a taste and flavor of an Indian architect, and décor, and carries the joint family culture of India. His son and both the daughters will be living in the same compound. In his words, “My children are close enough to see each other frequently with an honorable distance to have privacy and decorum of living separately.” Dr Sheetal Patel, his daughter, is a radiologist by profession and was equally enthusiastic about the vision of her power-

couple parents ---Dr Kiran & Pallavi Patel. Dr Sheetal has also contributed towards the donation and pledge. Though local media was less in attendance and was skeptical about the donation/pledge, India media from the US and across the globe was full in strength to cover the event and be part of history of a proud moment for Indian Americans in the US. For the first time in the history of the US, any medical college is named after the person of Indian origin--Dr Kiran C Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine and Dr Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences. Dr Hanbury II, president of NSU, said that the future leaders graduating from both these schools will represent the cultural diversity of region, nation and world so that they can better serve patients and communities. On September 25, in the presence of

students, media and other achievers from various fields, he announced the pledge of $200 million which includes the cash pledge of $25 million. Later on, two college campuses were named after the Patel couple--Dr Kiran C Patel College of medical science and Dr Pallavi Patel College of health sciences. The
