American Ambassador to India Richard Verma said the Indian government has infused a “renewed” sense of optimism and excitement among U.S. businesses.
He, however, said the US’ relationship with China and India’s ties with China have some similarities, elements of competition, cooperation... “but the India-US partnership is very strong and based on a simple promise that when the two largest democracies act together a really powerful and wonderful thing

Obama’s presidential library in Chicago WASHINGTON: The future library and museum commemorating Barack Obama’s two presidential terms will be built in Chicago, the U.S. president’s foundation said. The project, which includes the construction of an academic institute, will occupy land provided by City Hall in a public park that was identified on May 12 at noon, when the university that will collaborate in managing the presidential library will also be officially made public. In a video of the Obama Foundation, the president and first lady say they chose Chicago because it was the city that has marked their lives
and early careers, where they met each other and where their children were born. “The center will inspire citizens across the globe to better their communities, their countries, and their world. It will exist not merely as testimony to one man’s legacy, but as a dynamic, vibrant forum for civic participation, education, action, debate, and progress,” the announcement said. We have raised it with the Pakistani government and we have been very clear that the perpetrators of those in the attacks of Mumbai have to be brought to justice,” Verma said in an interview with news channel CNN-IBN. The two summits, he added, led to a handshake, an agreement between the governments to chart a “very aggressive” path forward, while defense, clean energy, economics and trade also stirred up “a lot of exciting pathways” for the US and India. Asked about the civil nuclear deal between India and the US, Verma said the two governments had “significantly” moved forward since January, leaving it for the private companies to sit with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd to push the momentum forward sans official intervention.

he U.S. Department of State said it is not planning to investigate the Clinton Foundation’s failure to report private donations that it received while Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State, Efe news agency reported on May 8. “The State Department has not and does not intend to initiate a formal review, or to make a retroactive judgment about items that were not submitted during Secretary Clinton’s tenure,” State Department spokesperson Jeff Rathke told reporters on May 7. Several U.S. media outlets have reported that the Clinton Foundation failed to disclose information about hundreds of foreign

Although the Clinton Foundation had already promised to make public all documents, media scrutiny of these foreign donations increased after the former first lady and former senator announced in April her decision to run for president in 2016.

Leading the opposition attack on the bill, Gandhi accused the government of “murdering” the existing land bill and said his party will oppose the new land bill both inside and outside the parliament. “This government is in a hurry to pass this bill... It will not happen so easily. If we are not able to stop it here (in parliament), we will hit the streets against it outside,” he said. “We took two years to bring land bill. NDA government murdered it within a few days,” he added. He said the previous act had faced “axe blows” that had removed its essential components such as clauses on consent and social impact.

s Greenpeace India struggles to stay afloat, the real reason why the government wants to shut down the global environmental NGO hasn’t got much attention: Coal, the single biggest source of primary energy in India, is at the heart of the Narendra Modi government’s ambitious plans to ramp up industrial production in the country. Coal meets 54.5 percent of India’s energy needs and 61.5 percent of the installed power generation capacity, and plays a key role in industries like steel and cement. India is set to more than double
its coal consumption by 2035 and become the world’s largest coal importer by around 2020, according to the International Energy Agency. Greenpeace has been at the forefront of a global campaign
Especially irksome to the government must be Greenpeace’s targeting of Coal India against coal mining and burning, and its Indian wing has mounted several high-visibility campaigns against coal-burning thermal power plants and coal mining in forests. Especially irksome to the govern-
ment must have been Greenpeace’s targeting of two domestic entities that are also major global players in coal — the public-sector Coal India, and the Adani Group whose promoter Gautam Adani is known to have a close relationship with Modi. Coal India is number one and the Adani Group number three on the list of the top 200 coal companies globally ranked by the potential carbon emissions content of their reported reserves, according to Fossil Free Indexes, a stock market index that promotes ethical investing. Greenpeace has campaigned against both companies, exposing their claims on reserves and financial health.

Three crucial bills in extended LS session
NEW DELHI: The extension of Lok Sabha session by three working days has enabled the government to complete some of its crucial agenda including a bill against black money stashed abroad and another to amend the whistleblowers protection act. The contentious land bill, which was introduced in the house on Monday, however has been referred to joint committee after an eager debate in which both the opposition and treasury benches sought to outscore each other. The second half of budget session of Lok Sabha was extended from May 8 to May 13. The Lok Sabha on Monday passed the Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets Bill, popularly known as the black money bill, which provides for heavy penalties and stringent punishment for stashing black money away in foreign accounts.

Modi’s visit to China: Old dilemmas linger
The task before Modi is daunting and he would need the unstinting support of all, for whichever policy option he adopts it will have momentous repercussions. R.S. KALHA, NEW DELHI
T
he rise of China as a great power is no longer a matter of speculation; it is a given fact. Most nations today seriously consider the Chinese factor when determining policy. The question uppermost in the minds of Indian policy makers is: should we contain or oppose the rise of China, singly or in tandem with others, or should we seek an accommodation? There are no easy answers. No doubt Modi’s closest advisors would be grappling with this question on the eve of his first official visit to China. The question that faced India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru was how to deal with Chinese power on our northern borders. In short, Nehru’s answer was to seek an accommodation with China and play for time till India was able to fully develop economically and militarily to meet the emerging challenge. That he failed is another question. Since Nehru and the 1962 conflict, successive Indian prime ministers have sought neither strategic accommodation nor confrontation with China. While serious attempts were made to settle the boundary question, it was realized that a settle-
ment was not imminent. Therefore it made better policy to first stabilize the border areas to minimize incidents. From denying that a dispute existed under Nehru, to stating that till the issue was settled, there would be no normalization, to Rajiv Gandhi’s assertion that relations may
icy change, we seem to be signalling a move towards the old policy of accommodation. The task before Modi is daunting as no easy solutions are obvious. He would need the unstinting support of all, for whichever policy option he adopts it will have momentous repercussions. One thought: Modi should announce the upgrading of the Andaman and Nicobar base to a full-fledged naval command before departure. It would be a signal of intent that the Chinese will not miss.
Malacca were ever to be blockaded, it would mean a detour of at least three to four days extra through unsafe waters. Suffice it to say that China senses no pressure from India, be it military, political or economic. In fact, if gestures be read as harbingers of pol-

Hence, the directive to ministers to go around the country after the budget session to counter the perception that the government is anti-farmer. In line with the Congress’ timehonored practice of launching various schemes to help the poor, the BJP, too, is initiating several social security measures. But the fact that it is fumbling in the dark is evident from the decision to invoke the saffron ideologue Deen Dayal Upadhyaya’s “integral humanism” concept to burnish the government’s and the BJP’s image although the phrase is as meaning-
less to people outside the Hindutva camp as Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s espousal of “Gandhian socialism” when the BJP was formed in 1980. No less fatuous is the hope in official and saffron circles that the Prasar Bharati’s radio and television channels will be able to spread the pro-poor message although it is no secret that the reach of Akashvani and Doordarshan remains as limited as it was before a saffronite was appointed as the Prasar Bharati’s head. The point, however, is why should the government be running scared simply because Rahul Gand-
Govt’s nervousness is all the more unwarranted because nearly all of Rahul’s allegations can be easily refuted
hi, with his batteries recharged in a Myanmar Buddhist monastery, has succeeded in infusing an element of belligerence into the Congress? The government’s nervousness is all the more unwarranted because nearly all of Rahul’s allegations, based on half-baked ideas of the social scene, can be easily refuted. A simple rebuttal of his antiindustrial stance is that development itself is a pro-poor measure as it leads to employment-oriented growth which is brought about largely by the private sector. The government, therefore, has nothing to be apologetic about. If it still gives the impression of being on the back foot, the reason apparently is that either the government does not have clear-cut ideas of what it intends to accomplish, or that there are not enough accomplished spokespersons in its ranks who can articulate its views.

special report
Several buildings that had developed cracks during the April 25 massive quake, came tumbling down during May 12 tremors. At least 65 people are feared dead in the latest tremors. (Photos: IANS)
Quake hits Nepal again, toll rising As many as 1,926 people sustained injuries in the May 12 quake which measured 7.3 on the Richter scale, according to official sources in Nepal IANS, KATHMANDU
T
he death toll in the powerful earthquake that rocked Nepal on May 12 has reached 65, authorities here said. As many as 1,926 people sustained injuries in the May 12 quake which measured 7.3 on the Richter scale, according to the Home Ministry's National Emergency Operation Centre. Geologists describe the May 12 temblor as an aftershock of the 7.9magnitude earthquake that jolted Nepal on April 25.
202 aftershocks in Nepal after April 25 temblor
Hundreds of people are still living in tents in Nepal after April 25 temblor.
As many as 8,151 have died in the April 25 quake and 17,866 people were injured. The death toll is likely to rise since search and rescue operations were continuing in the worsthit districts, including Dolakha, Sindhupalchok and Rasuwa. According to Rasuwa Chief District Officer Prem Lal Adhikari, the fresh tremors on Tuesday brought down the houses in Dolakha which were spared by last month's earthquake. At least 11 people were killed in the May 12 temblor in Sindhupalchok while over 100 people were
injured. According to Sindhupalchok Chief District Officer Gopal Prasad Parajuli, the April 25 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks had affected all areas, including headquarters of the district. Tuesday's tremors brought down those houses that had remained unaffected in the earlier quake. The death toll from the April 25 earthquake and May 12 temblor has reached 3,224 in Sindhupalchok district alone. The May 12 aftershock triggered massive landslides in different areas
KATHMANDU: As many as 202 aftershocks measuring above 4 on the Richter scale have rocked Nepal since the devastating April 25 earthquake, which killed over 8,000 people. At least 36 tremors have been felt since another major quake struck at 12.54 p.m. on May 12 which Nepal's National Seismological Center said was of 6.8-magnitude. The U.S. Geological Survey, however, put the magnitude of May 12 quake at 7.3. The major earthquake was followed by another massive jolt of 6.2 magnitude. Thirty-six other aftershocks were measured below 6
of Rasuwa district. According to Chief District Officer Uddhav Prasad Bhattarai, no casualty has been reported so far despite landslides affecting Gosainkund, Syafrubesi, Haku and Mailung areas — all boasting favoured trekking routes. The April 25 earthquake claimed 564 lives in Rasuwa and the death
on the Richter scale since then, with one at 10.33 a.m. on Wednesday measuring 4.6. According to the Home Ministry, 65 people were killed and over 2,000 injured in the latest earthquake alone. Dolakha was the hardest hit district.
toll may go up as the search and rescue operation is still underway in Rasuwagadhi, Langtang and Mailung. The Nepal Army has taken charge of the search, rescue, and relief operations as well as rubble removal efforts. An army source said it has quickly mobilized the army personnel following the May 12 temblor.
Earthquake toll touches 15 in Bihar Fresh quake throws life out of gear again PATNA: The toll in Bihar following May 12 massive earthquake has touched a total of 15, officials said. Besides, there were reports of a number of houses in Jehanabad, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Patna, Gaya, and Raxaul in East Champaran district developing cracks following the tremors, Bihar State Disaster Management Department Principal Secretary Vyasji told IANS. “We have confirmed the toll from concerned officials across the state. However, it may rise, if fresh reports of casualties are confirmed after verifications,” officials said. The epicenter of the earthquake was in Kodari, Nepal and it measured 7.3 magnitude on the Richter scale. The tremors were also felt across north India. Fear of aftershocks has caused panic among Patna people
ANIL GIRI, KATHMANDU
O after the local Met department warned of possible tremors in the next 24 hours. “Thousands of panic-stricken people, mostly residents of high-rise buildings and houses in congested lanes, spent the night in parks and Gandhi Maidan. They had done the same when the first earthquake occurred on April 25,” a police official said. The state government has cancelled leave of all the government doctors.
nce again, normal life in Kathmandu has been hit hard after the 7.3-magnitude earthquake that hit Nepal on Tuesday followed by 11 aftershocks till May 13 morning. This after markets, shops and schools were being opened, and normal life was limping back to normalcy with people gradually forgetting the trauma, pain and grief of the devastating April 25 earthquake. After the second massive earthquake within three weeks striking the Himalayan nation, fear, anxiety and insecurity returned to haunt the people, forcing them to live in open spaces and in tents. Hundreds of thousands of people, who had left Kathmandu in the aftermath of the April 25 quake,

were gradually returning when the second disaster struck. Over 100 buildings developed cracks and were damaged. Even those buildings which were considered safe after the April 25 quake suffered serious damage, according to the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Office (KMCO).
KMCO spokesperson Shantaram Pokhrel said almost all old buildings inside old Kathmandu — many of them over 100 years old and numbering over 70,000 — collapsed or were severely damaged on May 12. Schools, scheduled to open from May 15, have been ordered shut till May-end.

Karnataka High Court acquits former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa in disproportionate assets case; her supporters erupt in joy across the state; she is likely to return as chief minister again IANS, CHENNAI/BENGALURU
Brief timeline
I
n a development bound to bring her back as Tamil Nadu’s chief minister, the Karnataka High Court on Monday acquitted AIADMK leader J. Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case, triggering wild celebrations by her supporters all across the state. “Justice has won,” the former Tamil Nadu chief minister gloated hours after a special bench in Bengaluru acquitted her in the Rs.660 million case in which she was sentenced to four years in jail by a lower court. The charges were not “sustainable”, Justice C.R. Kumaraswamy said in the much-awaited verdict in the case in which Jayalalithaa, 67, was also fined a whopping one billion rupees. The judge also acquitted Jayalalithaa’s three co-convicts who too were sentenced to four years in jail and fined Rs.100 million each. They included close aide Sasikala Natarajan.
Jayalalithaa’s supporters rejoice as the news of her acquittal comes out.
The lower court was told to release Jayalalithaa’s confiscated assets. “The judgement signifies that justice has won,” said Jayalalithaa, who stepped down as chief minister after her earlier conviction. “It is not a victory for me but a victory for justice.” Within minutes of the judge-

CAMERON BACK WITH A BANG David Cameron’s Conservatives defy predictions, get majority in British elections; Cameron vows to make Great Britain even greater IANS, LONDON
Priti Patel is employment minister
D
efying all predictions and speculation, Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative Party on May 8 secured a simple majority in the 650-member House of Commons, winning 331 seats in the British general election. Ed Miliband’s Labour Party has secured 232 seats, the Scottish National Party (SNP) 56, and the Democratic Unionist Party and the Liberal Democrats eight each. The number of Indian-origin members in the new House of Commons remains at 10, unchanged from the previous house. Speaking outside No.10 Downing Street after visiting Buckingham Palace, Cameron said he would lead a government for “one nation” and make “Great Britain greater”. Britain was “on the brink of something special”, he added. Earlier, as the Conservatives marched to a majority, Cameron said the election result was “clearly a very strong result for the Conservative Party”, and added the party has had “a very positive response to a very positive campaign”. The Conservatives won 331 seats, five more than the magic figure of 326 for a majority in the 650-member House of Commons. The SNP has made a near-clean sweep with 56 out of a total 59 seats — recording its most successful general election victory ever. Its previous best was in October 1974, when it won 11 seats. The party won six seats in 2010.
Britain’s Conservative Party leader David Cameron outside 10 Downing Street.
The three seats that slipped through the SNP’s fingers in Scotland went to the Conservative Party, Labour and the Lib-Dems each. SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon told BBC that Labour has been “losing the trust of the people of Scotland over a period of years”. “What we’re seeing tonight is Scotland voting to put its trust in the SNP to make Scotland’s voice heard, a clear voice for an end to austerity, better public services and more progressive politics at Westminster. That’s what we now intend to do,” she added: The Labour Party suffered its worst defeat since 1987, losing 40 of its 41 seats in Scotland. Ed Miliband later apologized to MPs on losing their seats in the general election, saying that it had been a “very disappointing and difficult night”.
Norway, Philippines envoys killed in Pakistan IANS, DHAKA
T
he ambassadors of the Philippines and Norway were among seven people killed on Friday in a chopper crash in Pakistan's Naltar valley near Gilgit. Even as the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed the crash was caused by an attack it carried out, the army said the chopper “developed technical fault” while landing, local media reports said. Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Asim Bajwa said the dead included four foreigners — Ambassadors Domingo D. Lucinerio Jr. of the Philippines and Leif Larsen of Norway and the wives of the
Malaysian and Indonesian ambassadors — and three Pakistanis — two pilots and one crew member. He said that according to initial information, two helicopters belonging to the Pakistan Army landed safely “while the third developed technical fault while landing”, which caused the accident. He ruled out the possibility of any terrorist or subversive activity, according to Dawn online.
Obama greets David Cameron WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama on May 8 congratulated British Prime Minister David Cameron on his election victory, the White House said in a statement. “I congratulate Prime Minister Cameron on his impressive electoral victory. The special and essential relationship between the U.S. and the UK is rooted in deep and abiding shared interests and values,” Obama said. “I have enjoyed working closely with Prime Minister Cameron on a range of shared interests these last several years, and I look forward to continuing to strengthen the bonds between our countries.”
LONDON: British-Indian MP Priti Patel has been appointed employment minister in Prime Minister David Cameron’s new cabinet. Patel, 43, who comfortably won her Witham seat in England’s Essex county as a Conservative Party candidate in last week’s general elections by getting 57.5 percent of the total 47,339 votes cast, was in 2013 appointed the first ever UK Indian Diaspora Champion. In July 2014, Priti was appointed as exchequer secretary to the treasury in a cabinet reshuffle. First elected to parliament in 2010, Patel has a history of supporting campaigns for small businesses, transport infrastructure investment and affordable homes. The MP’s website describes her as “particularly interested in busi-
ness, trade and ensuring that British businesses flourish”. Her political beliefs in this area “were formed around her own experiences in business, from assisting her parents who have run a number of small businesses around the South East and East of England, to her career in the communications industry, where she worked in corporate communications.”
10 Indian-origin MPs elected LONDON: The number of Indian-origin members in the new House of Commons following the British general elections held on May 7 will remain at 10, unchanged from the previous house. All sitting MPs were re-elected barring one. Paul Uppal of the Conservative party lost in Wolverhampton South West in the West Midlands of England. He was defeated by Rob Marris of the Labour Party by 801 votes in a constituency with a large presence of Sikhs from India. Uppal’s loss, though, was compensated by victory for Rishi Sunak, a Conservative, in Richmond in Yorkshire. This first-time MP was fighting
a seat vacated by William Hague, who until last year was Britain’s foreign minister. Sunak is a son-in-law of N.R. Narayana Murthy, one of the founders of Infosys. Those who retained their seats are: Keith Vaz (Leicester East), who has been an MP from 1987; his sister Valerie Vaz (Walsall South); Virendra Sharma (Ealing Southall); Seema Malhotra (Feltham & Heston); Lisa Nandy (Wigan), who is half Indianhalf English; Sajid Javid (Bromsgrove), who is half Indian-half Pakistani, Priti Patel (Witham); Alok Sharma (Reading West); and Shailesh Vara (Cambridgeshire North West).
Gunmen kill 45 in a bus in Karachi IANS, ISLAMABAD
A
t least 45 people were killed and 24 others injured when gunmen opened fire inside a bus carrying Ismaili Muslims, a subsect of the Shia community, in the Pakistani port city of Karachi on May 13. Jundullha, a proscribed Al Qaedaaffiliated outfit, has claimed responsibility for the attack, Pakistani media reports said. The incident took place near the city’s Safoora Chowk area in the provincial capital of Sindh. Sindh Police Inspector General Ghulam Haider Jamali said 60-65 people were travelling in the bus. Hospital sources said the victims included 16 women. No children were on board. “At least six gunmen attacked the bus in the Safoora Goth area of Karachi,” said a senior police official.
“The gunmen stopped the bus and first fired at it from outside,” said the policeman. “Then they entered inside the bus and opened fire indiscriminately. After that they checked to see if anyone was left uninjured.” Video footage of the bus did not show bullet holes on the body of the vehicle suggesting that the attackers
entered the bus and fired their guns. Jundullha has targeted Shia minorities and foreign tourists in the past as well. In November last year, the group had pledged its support to the Islamic State (IS) Sunni radical group. Jundullah has claimed responsibility for several attacks including a blast near the Wagah border in November 2014.

Barca in Champions League final MUNICH: FC Barcelona will play in its eighth Champions League final next month after defeating Bayern Munich 5-3 on aggregate, despite losing 3-2 here in the second leg of the semi-final. Brazilian striker Neymar and German goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen were the difference-makers for Barcelona, who began the contest with a 3-0 lead after last week’s first leg at the Nou Camp. Facing the all but impossible task of overcoming a deficit against an inform Barcelona squad, Bayern got off to a promising start on May 12, as Medhi Benatia headed in a Xabi Alonso corner to put the home side up 1-0 in the 7th minute. The 71,000 mainly Bayern fans at Munich’s Allianz Arena took heart, but the joy did not last long. Neymar got the first of his two goals just eight minutes later, finishing off a play that began with Lionel Messi’s brilliant long ball to Luis Suarez deep in Bayern territory. The German club was left needing to score at least four goals and would have made a start in the 19th minute if ter Stegen had not made a spectacular stop on Thomas Müller. The Barcelona keeper rose to the occasion again just minutes later, denying Robert Lewandowski, before one of Bayern’s all-too-frequent defensive lapses enabled

India had cut all cricketing ties with Pakistan since the 26/11 Mumbai attacks; however, India did host Pakistan for an ODI series in 2011. “I would love to watch India play Pakistan. It will be very tough, but off the field we are great friends,” said former India wicketkeeper Kiran More. The two boards have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for five bilateral series over eight years. “This will help our team to come up,” said the legendary Pakistan batsman Zaheer Abbas. “It is going to be a big moment, people all over the world will follow it.”
Pietersen feels devastated IANS, LONDON
S
acked England batsman Kevin Pietersen says he is absolutely “devastated” on hearing the news that his hopes of returning to the national side have been dashed by England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) director of cricket Andrew Strauss. Strauss on May 12 revealed having “trust issues” with Pietersen and for that he would not be a part of the England team in the summer. Pietersen was sacked by England in February 2014 after having
Neymar’s decisive second goal in the 29th minute, again fed by Suarez. Though the crowd turned despondent, their team managed to generate two solid chances before the half and ter Stegen had to make another great save against Lewandowski. Lewandowski made the final 20 minutes more exciting by finally beating ter Stegen to even the score at 2-2. Müller put the home team up 3-2 in the 74th minute with an excellent shot from outside the area, renewing Bayern’s hopes for a miracle comeback, but Barcelona hung on to secure the victory.

Tom said, ‘You have had one of England’s greatest careers and we need to work together.’ So, of course, I agreed to the meeting.” But

‘Indian connect

A
ctor Evelyn Sharma, who is of Indian and German origin, believes NRI artists get recognized in Bollywood due to their “Indian connect” rather than the tag of being ‘outsiders’. Born to a Punjabi father and German mother, Evelyn, who will next be seen as a “simple Indian girl” from Himachal Pradesh in Ishqedarriyaan, refuses to describe NRI talent as “niche actors”. “Katrina Kaif, Jacqueline Fernandez, Sunny Leone and Nargis Fakhri, myself have found a place in Bollywood because of our Indian connect rather than the fact that we have grown up abroad,” she told IANS. She says starting out in Bollywood by playing an NRI in From Sydney With Love was “the easiest” as it “comes naturally” to her. But she does not feel “glamorous” is the right way to describe her on screen characters. The Kuch Kuch
Phalke Award given to Shashi Kapoor
MUMBAI: Bollywood’s evergreen charmer Shashi Kapoor was on May 10 conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honor in Indian cinema, by Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley at the iconic Prithvi Theatre. The 77-year-old was wheeled on to the stage by his son Kunal and daughter Sanjana before an august gathering. Shashi — the star of over 150 films — was all smiles upon receiving the Swarn Kamal.
Locha Hai actor has also never shied away from exposing on screen — whether it was donning a bikini in the song Sunny sunny from the 2014 film Yaariyan or her “sexy” role as Lara in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. But in real life, Evelyn calls herself
a “simple girl”. “Wearing a bikini for ‘Sunny sunny’ was not to show skin, but to swim in the ocean. Of course it looks nice too, and why not flaunt it if you have a sexy body? As for myself, I’m a simple girl from a small town in Germany. “I was never called ‘sexy’ or ‘glamorous’ until my role of Lara. So all credit for my new found sex appeal goes to Ayan Mukerji and Karan Johar, who cast me in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani,” Evelyn added. To cement her space in Indian cinema further, Evelyn has also worked upon her Hindi diction. Asked whether speaking Hindi is a problem for her, she said: “Initially it was quite difficult because I was learning a completely new language. I’m proud, however, that I have dubbed even my first film with my own voice. “Hindi now is not a problem to me anymore. I have a fantastic Hindi teacher and whenever I get a new script, I go through it with him to correct diction and sound wherever needed.”
Anupam Kher happy to part of American series ‘Sense8’ MUMBAI: Veteran actor Anupam Kher, who will feature in Netflix’s series Sense8 is elated over joining the team of the American fiction drama. “Presenting the sensational trailer of Wachowskys @sense8 for #Netflix. Happy to part of this terrific project,” Anupam tweeted on late May 10. The plot of the series revolves around eight strangers from eight different parts of the world, and how one thing connects them together in a very distinctive relationship. The trailer takes the viewers through ups and downs of these eight people. Though Anupam didn’t feature in the trailer, the video was
packed with action and thrill set against a griping mystery. The show is directed and produced by The Wachowskis brothers, who have worked on several Hollywood projects including the Matrix trilogy and the upcoming Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis-starrer Jupiter Ascending.
‘Helen’ will transform Poonam Pandey’s career IANS, MUMBAI
C
ontroversial model-actress Poonam Pandey’s career is poised for a transformation after Helen, says the film’s director Ajit Rajpal. Rajpal told IANS: “When a title like Helen gets attached with Poonam, it automatically creates curiosity and entertainment. I’m confident that Poonam’s career will be completely transformed after Helen. “The way she is working right now, I have no doubts that a few years down the line, she will be someone who everybody will be looking forward to work with.” Rajpal earlier wrote Nasha — which also starred Poonam — but he never got to direct it. But for Helen, he made sure to take on the writer and director’s roles himself. Asked what prompted him to cast Poonam in Helen, he said: “I have been tracking her progress in the entertainment world and I can say that she has not been fully explored yet. Her talent hasn’t been tapped.”

Shoojit Sircar, along with his team, who earlier gave us Yahaan, Vicky Donor and Madras Cafe, this time with Piku delivers a gem, that can go down in the annals of Indian cinema as one of
the most entertaining films of the year. Piku is a slice of life that tackles the “basic” truths with candor and humor. It portrays a dysfunctional Bengali family to the core. Based in
Delhi’s Chittaranjan Park, Bhaskor Banerjee (Amitabh Bachchan) is a cantankerous, hypochondriac septuagenarian, who constantly fears that he is “critical” with issues relating to his bowel movements or
the lack of it. He suffers from chronic constipation and his life solely revolves around his defecation. This leads his daughter Piku (Deepika Padukone) to sacrifice her personal life to take care of her ageing father. She is largely tolerant and indulges most of his idiosyncrasies. She even agrees to a road journey from Delhi to Kolkata when he insists he wants to visit his ancestral place, to where he belongs. The duo, accompanied by their Man Friday Boudhan and the owner of the taxi company, Rana Choudhary (Irrfan) as the driver, embark upon the journey. Throughout the journey, the film captures the fine nuances of its quirky characters through their bickering and squabbles.

The wedding rumors started after a publication quoted the Barfi star announcing: "This year both of us are extremely busy, so there won’t be any time for the marriage. We have planned to tie the knot by the end of next year.” Mostly, the duo have kept silent about their relationship. They are also reportedly living together. H I C AG O , I L - A f t e r a multiyear journey through the private and public sectors, Hardik Bhatt is back in the government sphere as Illinois’ new chief information officer. Prior to taking the new post, Bhatt most recently worked for Cisco heading global market development for their Internet of Things and smart cities practice. During his time at Cisco, Bhatt visited 18 countries and worked with governors, mayors, CIOs and other officials to help them transform their specific areas to smart cities or states. Bhatt, who officially took on the position at the end of March, spoke with StateScoop TV at the National Association of State Chief Information Officers’ midyear conference in Alexandria, Virginia, about his priorities, vision and mindset as he approaches his new job. “The idea is to take the same concepts and the global business experience and exposure that I’ve gathered over the last five years [at Cisco] and apply that in a way to make Illinois the most competitive state,” Bhatt said. “My vision will be completely tied with where the governor

Hardik Bhatt wants to take the state.” Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner told Bhatt that he wanted the state to be the most efficient, accessible and competitive in the U.S. In response, Bhatt said he would look to find ways to use technology to achieve that goal and make Illinois more attractive for business. Despite the ambitious goals
set forth by the governor, Bhatt said he isn’t naive and knows that the government environment is tough to navigate. “[The government environment] is not easy,” Bhatt said. “But I have that experience. I know how legislatures work, I know how procurement works in government, I know how funding constraints are in the government. Basically, I’m going to take my business experience and make it work with the government boundaries that I have worked within.” One of Bhatt’s first priorities, he said, was to create a culture of innovation within Illinois state government. By opening up dialogue inside state government, Bhatt thinks he can help some of the good ideas at lower levels of government make their way to the top. “There is a self-optimized bureaucracy, and you would find that in a lot of state governments,” Bhatt said. “A lot of governments in general have not really gone through major changes in the last seven years. There are people in the middle management who really, really want to contribute and who really have a vision and who really have a lot of ideas.”

INDIAN SCHOLAR TO TEACH HINDI AT MONTANA VARSITY M BY A STAFF WRITER ISSOULA, MT -- University of Montana (UM) students will have the opportunity to learn the Hindi language next year. UM’s South & Southeast Asian Studies program was awarded a Fulbright instructor to teach the language during the 2015-16 academic year, according to a press release. Gaurav Mishra, a native Hindi speaker, will arrive mid-August to teach a two-course sequence of elementary Hindi, beginning in fall semester and finishing in the spring. Mishra is from Uttar Pradesh, and currently teaches English as a second language at a college in India.“This is a rare honor and a big achievement because only four universities in the nation have been allotted Hindi instructors,” UM liberal studies Professor Ruth Vanita said, in a statement. Fulbright requires Mishra to serve as a cultural ambassador to the university and the community, which he is enthusiastic about doing. Woman is jailed for BY A STAFF WRITER supporting terrorism
Heather Elizabeth Coffman
BY A STAFF WRITER ICHMOND, VA -- A Virginia woman has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for lying to investigators about supporting the Islamic State militant group. The sentence imposed on May 11 by US District Judge John Gibney was three months less than prosecutors wanted and eight months more than Heather Elizabeth Coffman’s attorneys recommended. Coffman posted numerous messages on Facebook supporting the Islamic State and tried to help a man make arrangements to train and fight with the group in Syria. She also tried to make similar arrangements for an undercover FBI agent. Prosecutors portrayed Coffman as a serious jihadist. Defense attorneys said she was just gullible and immature. Coffman pleaded guilty in February to making a materially false statement about an offense involving terrorism.

BY A STAFF WRITER MHERST, MS -- Can Blue Tooth technology help the blind navigate through their day? At the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, computer systems engineering students Divya Reddy, an Indian American, and Krista Lohr have created such a navigation system for blind and visually impaired people. Using Blue Tooth for indoors and GPS technology for outdoor navigation, their project gives voice directions to a destination input into the user’s smartphone. “When you get to your destination, it will give you an alert to say when you are there,’’ said Lohr, 21, of Pittsfield. Each destination will be read to the user using the smartphone and they can select among them, according to Reddy, 21, from Plainsboro, New Jersey. First, a person can select the building one wants to get to, and then select a specific room inside. Reddy said among the choices was the women’s room at Marcus Hall. “Right now it is only set up for the engineering quad, but we want to make it for the entire campus so you can get anywhere,’’ Lohr said. In designing their project, both students said the weather was a factor, sometimes disrupting the GPS signal. The senior project is a highlight of the UMass experience, Reddy said. “We had to start out from scratch doing everything ourselves and that was an awesome feeling,’’ Lohr said.

GUJARATI PLAY ‘WELCOME ZINDAGI’ FOR BENEFIT OF AKSHAYA PATRA BY A STAFF WRITER
N
APERVILLE, IL-- On June 5, art, entertainment and charity will come together in Naperville for the benefit of disadvantaged children in India. The Chicago Chapter of Akshaya Patra is sponsoring a performance of very popular and critically acclaimed Gujarati play ‘Welcome Zindagi’. All proceeds and all contributions raised will go to Akshaya Patra US. The performance will be held at Christian Community Church located at 1635 Emerson Lane, Naperville, Il 60540. Akshaya Patra’s mission is to fight hunger and malnutrition in India, with a focus on children. In partnership with Central and State governments, it provides freshly prepared, nutritious and hygienically sound midday meals to 1.4 million children in ten states. This includes 400,000 children in Gujarat. The Midday meal program was started by Akshaya Patra Foundation in June 2000 with the vision that “no child in India will be deprived of education because of hunger”. It started with serving midday meals to 1,500 children in Bangalore in 2000 and has grown to feeding 1.4 million children in almost 11000 schools in 10 states. “ I’m so passionate about Akshaya Patra for three reasons: one, it focuses on the health and education of children and where need is most acute. This is where you get the highest return on charitable contribution”, says Himanshu Patel, of Akshaya Patra Chicago.
Secondly, according to him, “they use the money very efficiently. Their fund-raising cost and overhead cost is among the lowest. And, they use technology and modern management techniques to minimize cost of feeding so many children. Third, they have been recognized for transparency for financial reporting by independent auditing organizations.” Akshaya Patra USA raised $3,6 million in 2014 and its fund-raising and management cost was 11%. Akshaya Patra India’s fund-raising and overhead cost is only 4% of the money raised. One of the distinguishing characteristics of Akshaya Patra is focus on use of technology and modern management principles. It has won several awards for Operational Excellence from Lean Six Sigma and Kaizen Institute in India. Akshaya Patra also stands out for transparency in financial reporting. It has received Gold Shield Award for “Excellence in Financial Reporting” from the Institute of Char tered Accountants of India (ICAI) for five years in a row. It is one of only three organizations, and only non-profit organization to be inducted by ICAI into the Hall of
UPCOMING
Fame for “Excellence in Financial Reporting”. Akshaya Patra Board of Trustees and Advisors include several luminaries. The chairman of the Board of Trustees for Akshaya Patra USA is Gururaj “Desh” Deshpande, a successful serial entrepreneur and philanthropist. Other notable members include Infosys Limited founders Mohandas Pai and Narayana Murthy, Fareed Zakaria, Deepak Chopra and Nitin Nohria, Dean of Harvard Business School. Saroj Patel of Akshaya Patra Chicago chapter said that though Akshaya Patra fed 400,000 children in India, its awareness in the Gujarati community was very low. “Primary motivation for sponsoring a Gujarati Play ‘Welcome Zindagi’ is to inform our community of what they do, and how well they do it. I’m so glad that we’re bringing a very popular and critically acclaimed play for a very noble cause”, she said. ‘ Welcome Zindagi’ is written and directed by Saumya Joshi from Ahmedabad. He also acts in the play and is a well-regarded Gujarati poet and a professor of literature. He has been hailed as a trailblazer in Gujarati theatre. Mumbai Theatre Guide called ‘lWelcome Zindagi’ a high point in present Gujarati theatre scenario”. This effort is supported by Vachikam which has a history of bringing high-quality shows to Chicago, Chicago Art Circle which keeps the flame of Gujarati poetry and literature alive in Chicago, and Manpasand which brings many Gujarati plays to Chicago.

Shobhana’s ‘Krishna’ thrills St. Louis
S
T LOUIS, MO-- The halls of the CVPA (Central Visual and Performing Arts) Theatre in St Louis resonated with music and dance on the evening of May 3 with Shobhana’s “Krishna”, a musical dance drama in English, enthralling 500-plus viewers of all ages. It was organized locally by non-profits Ohmkaram (organization of St. Louis Hindu Malayalis) and Tamil Sangam of Missouri. Conceived and created by acclaimed actress and Padmashri recipient, Shobhana, the dance drama with 16 performers took the audience on a journey through the life of one of Mahabharata’s most beloved characters – Krishna; from his birth, to the famed battle at Kurukshetra. Shobhana donned the garb, presence of mind, strategies, and charm of Krishna. True to the character, Krishna was mischievous and humorous at times. It was an inspiring musical drama, where the stage, sets, lights and costumes danced in tune with the performers, a true visual-audio treat. The event was sponsored locally by US Wide Financial, Seema Enterprises, Vintech, Sangeetha, Abhinaya and Kumon, along with other local non profit organizations and businesses.

irst impressions tend to last longer when it comes to the world of professionals. Wear properly fitting clothes with smaller prints, and glam up with subtle makeup if you’re in the corporate world, says an expert. Sheena Agarwaal, image consultant at Gurgaon-based Urbanista Image Consultancy, has shared some tips on corporate grooming: l Always dress to project your brand. Do not underplay or overplay. Nothing kills the first impression faster than an interaction that does not inspire trust. l Clothes need not be expensive but they need to fit well. Understand the right fit for your body design and make sure your clothes look like you own them. l Stay clear of sheer fabrics and feminine clothes in a very corporate environment, wear smaller prints, close toed shoes, subtle make up, accessories like diamontiles or pearls. Get glowing skin in summers NEW DELHI: Want to avoid looking dry and dull in summer? Consume eight glasses of water everyday and avoid eating junk food, suggests an expert. Aashmeen Munjaal, owner of the capital-based Star Salon n' Spa, shares some useful tips to flaunt flawless and healthy skin: l Drink six to eight glasses of water daily which flushes out toxins. l Apply banana, coconut milk and honey as it moisturizes your face. It prevents wrinkles and dark circles. l Avoid eating junk food! It not only creates deficiency of nutrients, but also lead to create toxins in the body. Eat food rich in vitamins and minerals. l Apply the mixture of a pinch of camphor and a few drops of vitamin E oil to rose water. It acts as the best toner. Toning is important for soft nourished
servative, and preferably off the face. With a few exceptions, hair color should not be shocking or unusual. l Keep your makeup simple and appropriate for daytime. Wearing no makeup at all is almost as bad as wearing too much makeup. Research has shown that the appropriate amount of makeup has some impact on how people perceive you. l Importance of grooming can never be discredited. Clean nails, personal hygiene, check on body odor and bad breath all need to be taken into account.
ave you ever tried or heard of a whisper porn? Well, for some enthusiasts, the sound of whispering produces a warm, tingly sensation just like the stimulation they feel while watching a video. Now, psychologists from Swansea University in Britain have published what they call the very first scientific paper on why some people love such ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) activities. ASMR is a perceptual phenomenon characterized as a pleasurable tingling sensation in various parts of the body in response to visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory or cognitive stimuli. For a layman, such activities are the feeling of a subtle euphoria that takes people into an almost trance-like state of relaxation — spreading goosebumps across the
skin. For the study, 500 participants from Facebook and Reddit “ASMR” groups filled out a questionnaire about their ASMR viewing habits, why they watched the videos and what triggers they responded to. The authors used the data to identify the sensation's most common triggers: whispering, personal attention and crisp sounds like crinkling of wrapping paper. The paper also highlighted some potentially interesting connections between ASMR and two other conditions: “flow states” and synesthesia. According to study co-author Nick J. Davis, “flow” states are experienced by athletes and workers during the period of heightened focus and have a natural connection to ASMR. David found that those who experienced “flow” states more often tended to respond to a greater number of ASMR triggers.

he bathroom can speak volumes about the homeowners’ sense of style. So, accentuate your bathroom with chic tiles, accessories and more. Kaushiki Gon, style director, FabFurnish.com shares how to add oodles of allure to your showering space: Trendy tiles: The most basic way of building a chic space for rejuvenation in your house is to get the tiling of your bathroom right. Using tiles in bright and peppy shades makes it look bigger. If you’re seeking a warmer and cozier feel, go in for darker hues. You can also opt for digitally-printed tiles with natural motifs. But remember to choose a neutral color tone for the rest of the accessories and fixtures to maintain a subtle and classy appeal. Vibrant vignettes: Add vibrancy in specific spots of the bathroom for a perfect blend of minimalism and spunk. Paint one wall in a color that stands out and then match all acces-
sories to this shade, leaving the rest of the walls bare. You could also go in for patterned wallpaper or a tiled wall and complement the design with faucets and fixtures in the bathroom. This scheme can lend a truly artistic character to your bathing space. Alluring accessories: Find an old tray in your house, dress it up with a pretty runner and place all your bathing accessories and beauty products on it. Keep it in a spot
where it grabs maximum attention. Candles are another inexpensive ways of blending in blissful charm in the bathroom. To complete the ambience of sophistication, place a stylish potted plant in one corner of bathroom. Stylish seats: If the space in your bathroom allows, you should definitely add tufted Ottomans and Baroque-style chairs. Stylish seating truly sets apart a luxury bathroom from a regular one.
