‘Clinton leads by 5 heading’ Among likely voters, Clinton tops Trump 49 per cent to 44 per cent, the poll showed IANS, WASHINGTON
Republican Powell to vote for Clinton
H
illary Clinton is leading Republican rival Donald Trump by five points as the presidential campaign heads into its final two weeks, with the Democratic nominee’s support just shy of the 50 per cent mark, according to a new CNN/ORC poll. Among likely voters, Clinton tops Trump 49 per cent to 44 per cent, the poll showed. Clinton has expanded her edge among younger voters and nonwhites, while Trump has boosted his support among the whites without college degrees who make up the majority of his supporters. Clinton now stands at 53 per cent among voters under age 45, compared with 47 per cent in the previous CNN/ORC poll. In fact, the only age group where Clinton currently trails Trump is among those age 50-64, who back Trump by four points in this poll. Clinton’s support has also ticked up among non-whites — 72 per cent back her now vs. 69 per cent in a poll conducted just after the first debate in September, not a large enough change to be significant, but edges her margin over Trump among this group above 50 points. Trump has gained a bit among white voters, edging up to 54 per cent in the new poll from 49 per cent support in the last poll. This gain is centered largely among white non-college voters, who break for Trump by a 62 per cent to 32 per cent margin, while white college grads continue to lean in Clinton’s direction, favoring the former secretary of state by 11 points.
Clinton, Trump begin final campaigning WASHINGTON: A little more than two weeks before the November 8 presidential elections, US Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and her Republican opponent Donald Trump have began the final stretch of the campaign, with the former leading in the polls and the latter vowing he would not give up. The proximity of the elections has been reflected in the accumulation of several daily events held by the candidates, as well as the continued presence of heavyweights such as President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. —IANS

US army captain’s father to support Clinton WASHINGTON: The father of a Muslim-American army captain, has come out in support of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and will campaign for her this week, media reports said. Khizr Muazzam Khan, 66, is father of United States Army Captain Humayun Khan, who died while serving in the 2004 Iraq War.
According to the poll, the gender gap remains large, with Clinton holding a wide 12-point lead among women, topping Trump 53 per cent to 41 per cent among that group, while Trump edges Clinton by a narrow three-points among

During the Democratic National Convention held in July, Khan blasted Trump for his divisive remarks and proposal to temporarily ban

WASHINGTON: Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell has announced that he will vote for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in the November 8 elections. Powell, a Republican statesman, revealed his vote on Tuesday in a speech during the annual fall luncheon of the business group Long Island Association, New York, Efe news reported. “I am voting for Hillary Clinton,” said Powell, explaining that the Democratic candidate is “smart”, has “experience” and has the right “temperament”. “The other candidate (Republican Donald Trump) is not qualified to be president. He has insulted African-Americans. He has insulted women. He has insulted his own party. He has insulted our allies around the world one by one by one. He has insulted veterans,” said the former Secretary of State who served from 2001 and 2005. —IANS
people like you” compared with 44 per cent who think Trump would be better on that score. Clinton also holds wide leads on having the better temperament to serve effectively as president (61 per cent to 32 per cent) and being better able to handle the responsibilities of commander in chief (55 per cent to 40 per cent). The CNN/ORC Poll was conducted by telephone October 20-23 among a random national sample of 1,017 adults.
Trump would have called George Washington ‘a loser’ IANS, WASHINGTON
D
emocratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said that her opponent Donald Trump would have called first US President George Washington “a loser” for stepping down after leading the country for eight years, a media report said. “I think this all started when George Washington refused to become a king, right? Donald Trump probably would have called him a ‘loser’,” CBS news quoted Clinton as saying at a rally at Broward College’s North Campus in Coconut Creek. Clinton said that Trump was “making an unprecedented attack on our (US) democracy” and on
American values that date back to George Washington. “Donald Trump is attacking everything that has set our country
apart for 240 years,” Clinton said. “After spending his entire campaign attacking one group of Americans after another: Immigrants, African-
Americans, Latinos, women, POWs (prisoner of war), Muslims and people with disabilities. Now, his final target is democracy itself,” she added. At the third debate last week in Las Vegas, Republican presidential nominee Trump said that he would keep Americans in “suspense” over whether or not he would honor the results of the election. Clinton said that Trump’s words should not be taken lightly. “On January 20th, the first thing a President does is to take an oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution. And I have serious doubts about whether Donald Trump even understands what that means,” CBS news quoted Clinton as saying.

Tata sacking: Mistry hits back
In an angry letter to the board members of Tata Sons, the sacked chairman said Tata group may have to take a write-down of $18 billion IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he sacked chairman of Tata Sons, Cyrus P. Mistry, has indicated that the Tata group was in a bad financial shape, painting a picture of several trouble spots in the group companies. In his five-page angry letter to the board members of Tata Sons and the trustees of the group, Mistry said that a realistic assessment of the fair value of the “legacy hotspots” like IHCL, Tata Motors PV, Tata Steel Europe, Tata Power Mundra and Teleservices could “potentially result in a write down over time of about Rs 118,000 crore ($18 billion).” He said the capital employed in these companies had risen from Rs 132,000 crore to Rs 196,000 crore, due to operational losses, interest and capex. “This figure is close to the net-
Delhi fights bird flu spread NEW DELHI: With reports of three more birds dying in the national capital, including one in Delhi zoo, both the Delhi and the central governments on Wednesday geared up efforts to contain further spread of avian flu. The number of birds dying due to bird flu has reached close to 70 in the national capital. The central government, in line with a request from the Delhi Animal Husbandry Minister Gopal Rai, announced on Wednesday formation of a committee to maintain constant vigil on the situation arising out of outbreak of bird flu. According to an official announcement, the committee to monitor the bird flu situation will be headed by Joint Commissioner of Animal Husbandry Department and will have representatives from the Health Ministry, Environment Ministry and the Forest Ministry, apart from representatives of the Delhi government. “Besides monitoring the situation, the committee will assist the state government in taking steps to contain the spread of avian influenza (H5N8),” the statement said. All bird sanctuaries and areas where there are lakes have been advised to keep a close watch on the situation and in case of any suspicious death of birds, the state government and the Centre should be notified, the statement added.

worth of the group which is at Rs 174,000 crore,” thus painting a picture which shows up these companies in a precarious situation. Mistry was removed from the position of chairman by the Tata
Sons board on Monday, reinstating Ratan Tata to the post after four years, in an interim capacity. A Tata group spokesperson said they had nothing to comment on Mistry’s letter. The action by the
Tata Sons board has shaken up the market capitalization of many group companies, with some of them showing sharp declines. Mistry said in the letter that the company’s action to suddenly remove him without enough explanation not only damaged his reputation, but also caused “immeasurable harm” to the group’s goodwill. Mistry also said that he was pushed to a position of a “lame duck” chairman. “The sadness of the action, and the lack of explanation has led to all manner of speculation and has done my reputation and the reputation of the Tata Group immeasurable harm,” Mistry wrote in the letter, a copy of which is available with IANS. The letter was sent to the directors and trustees from Mistry’s Tata mail id a day after he was removed from the post.

which he has declined to do. Governor Ram Naik said he had called Akhilesh to be briefed about the situation within the ruling party in the last one week. An informed source said that Akhilesh Yadav handed over a letter of support from 205 legislators of his party and briefed Naik about the legislature meeting of his party MLAs. The move is being seen as an attempt by the Chief Minister’s camp to pre-empt any move by his uncle Shivpal Yadav and father Mulayam Singh Yadav to upstage him at any point of time in near future.

Modi bats for women’s rights, blasts triple talaq IANS, MAHOBA (UTTAR PRADESH)
I
n his first comments on the controversial issue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the government and society should ensure justice to Muslim women and not let their lives be destroyed by triple talaq. Modi at the same time also condemned the prevalence of female foeticide in Hindu society. Addressing a public rally here, Modi said it was not fair for a man to say “talaq” thrice over the phone to ruin a Muslim woman’s life. “This issue should not be politicized. Female foeticide is a sin. So what if the sinner is a Hindu. He will have to go to jail for such an act.

My government has taken a number of steps to stop female foeticide. Religion and sect should not be
allowed to come in the way when such matters arise. Daughters, mothers, sisters should be protected.
Mothers and sisters should be respected. We have raised the issue firmly,” he said. “Elections and politics have their own place. But to give justice to Muslim women and that too according to the Constitution is the responsibility of the government and the society.” The Prime Minister also urged people not to make triple talaq a Hindu-Muslim issue. “We have told the Supreme Court that there should not be injustice to Muslim women. There should not be discrimination on the basis of religion,” Modi said. Modi came down heavily on political parties who he said were politicizing the issue.

IS claims attack in Pak The deadly attack at a police academy in Pakistan’s Quetta city left at least 59 people killed and over 120 others injured IANS, ISLAMABAD
T
he Islamic State (IS) on Tuesday claimed responsibility of a deadly attack at the Police Training Academy in Pakistan’s Quetta city, local media reported. The IS’ Amaq news agency claimed that the outfit sent three men on Monday night to attack the cadets at the hostel of Sariab Road Police Training Academy, located 20 km away from Quetta, the capital city of the country’s southwest Balochistan province. The Amaq news agency also posted on its website a picture of the men carrying Kalashnikovs and wearing suicide jackets, Xinhua news agency reported.

The mouthpiece said the militants “used machine guns and grenades, and then blew up their
explosive vests in the crowd.” Earlier speaking to the media, Maj Gen Sher Afgan, chief of para-
military Frontier Corps, said the militants belonged to banned outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi al-Almi and had got instructions from their handlers in Afghanistan. The group, however, did not take credit for the attack. The attack was carried out at about 11.05 p.m. local time on Monday night, and left 59 people killed and over 120 others injured. This is the second time that the IS has claimed terrorist attack in Quetta since the beginning of this year. Earlier in August, the group took credit for an attack on a gathering of lawyers at a hospital in Quetta that left 70 persons killed and over 100 injured. The attack was also claimed by Pakistani Taliban faction Jamaatur-Ahrar.
‘Forces almost ready to retake IS capital’ IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced that it will be only a matter of weeks before Washington and its allies are ready to drive the Islamic State (IS) terror group from Raqqa, its self-proclaimed capital in Syria. Carter told reporters at a NATO meeting in Brussels on Wednesday that getting troops in place for the siege of Raqqa would be undertaken within weeks but declined to offer more specifics, CNN reported. The plan “has us generating those forces in a matter of weeks ... generating them and positioning them for the isolation of Raqqa,” Carter said. “That’s what I’m going to say,” he
Evacuation of Calais migrant camp begins PARIS: France on Monday started to clear, in a “calm and controlled manner”, the shanty town in northern Calais where about 9,000 migrants live, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said. “The objective is to find shelter for those who are seeking asylum in France and who should not be in precarious conditions, vulnerable, and in the hands of smugglers,” Xinhua news agency quoted Cazeneuve as saying. Television footage showed dozens of migrants lining up with their suitcases.
36 civilians shot dead in Afghanistan KABUL: At least 36 civilians were shot dead by militants in Afghanistan’s Ghor province, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. The victims were kidnapped by militants after security forces and allied local uprising fighters repelled a militants’ attack in Firoz Koah on Tuesday, Ghor Governor Mohammad Nasir Khazah told Xinhua .
Sharbat Bibi arrested in Pakistan ISLAMABAD: National Geographic’s famed ‘Afghan Girl’ Sharbat Bibi was arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Wednesday in Pakistan’s Peshawar city, authorities said. Bibi was arrested from her home for forgery of a Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC), FIA sources said. Bibi has dual Pakistani and Afghan nationality, and both ID cards have been recovered from her, Dawn online reported. An FIA official said the officer who had issued the ID cards to Sharbat Bibi was now working as a deputy commissioner in customs.

10,500 people displaced: UN UNITED NATIONS: More than 10,500 people have to date been recorded as internally displaced as a result of the Mosul military operation in Iraq, a UN spokesman told reporters here Wednesday. “The majority of the displaced are sheltering in host communities while others are sheltering at three displacement camps outside of Mosul,” Xinhua news agency quoted UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric as saying. Humanitarian partners continue to provide assistance to displaced families, he said.

said, adding, “And not many weeks.” It has been “long planned” that the US-backed assault on Mosul -which started earlier this month -Iraq and Raqqa would be overlapping, Carter said. The top US commander in Iraq, General Stephen Townsend, told reporters via satellite that it was “imperative to get isolation in place
around Raqqa” because intelligence reports showed that there was “significant external operations attacks planning” taking place inside the city. “We actually aren’t sure how pressing it is, and that’s what’s worrying,” Townsend said. “We know they are up to something, and it’s an external plot. We don’t know exactly where; we don’t know exactly when.”
TORONTO: A bill to proclaim October as Hindu Heritage Month annually in Canada’s Ontario province has been introduced in the provincial assembly here. Ontario is home to more than 700,000 Indo-Canadians. Introducing the bill in the Ontario assembly in Toronto, Joe Dickson, who is a Member of the Provincial Parliament (MPP), said that by proclaiming the month of October as Hindu Heritage Month, Ontario will recognize the “important contributions that Hindu Canadians have made to Ontario’s social, economic, religious, political and cultural fabric.” Dickson said October held a special significance for Hindus.

ew Zealand on Wednesday affirmed its constructive contribution towards India joining the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group (NSG) as the two countries called for stopping cross-border terrorism while agreeing to strengthen their political, defense and security relationship. Addressing a joint press conference here with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, visiting New Zealand Prime Minister John Key assured of his country’s “consistent support” to New Delhi’s bid to
become a member of the reformed UN Security Council. “I acknowledge the importance of India joining the NSG. New Zealand will continue to contribute constructively to the process currently underway in the NSG to consider India’s membership. New Zealand is committed to working with the NSG members to reach a decision and as soon as possible,” he said. Modi, in his remarks, said terrorism was “one of the greatest challenges to global peace and security”. radicalization and terrorism. Nations who believe in humanity need to coordinate their actions and policies to counter this threat,” he said. He said India and New Zealand have agreed to strengthen their security and intelligence cooperation against terrorism and radicalization, including in the domain of cyber security. Both Modi and Key used cricket terminology to emphasize cordial ties between the two countries. “In our ties... defensive play has given way to aggressive batting,” said Modi.

Kapur, who has directed critically acclaimed films like Masoom, Bandit Queen and Elizabeth, will preside over the jury. “This is Asia’s time. Over the past few years, consumerism has catapulted the Asian market into international renown, but what we are now experiencing is the renaissance of culture as inspired by the Asian communities,” Kapur said. Kapur, who brought the ‘invisible man’ to Bollywood screen

of storytelling will bring the world to a better understanding of itself.” Through the film festival, the Macao Special Administrative Region government also aims to broaden the diversity of tourism

ncreased exposure to air pollution may cause damage and inflammation to blood vessels among young and healthy adults and thus raise the risk of cardiovascular disease and other related deaths, say researchers, including one of Indian-origin. The study revealed how air pollution actually affects the blood vessels to increase the risk of disease, which was previously unknown. The researchers found that
periodic exposure to fine particulate matter was associated with several abnormal changes in the blood that are markers for cardiovascular disease. As air pollution rose, they found small, micro-particles indicating cell injury and death significantly increased in number, levels of proteins that inhibit blood vessel growth increased, and proteins that signify blood-vessel inflammation also showed significant increases. “Although we have known for some time that air pollution can

‘Universe not expanding at accelerating rate’ IANS, LONDON
C
hallenging a standard cosmological concept, a team of researchers led by an Indian-origin scientist has found that the universe may not actually be expanding at an accelerating pace as was previously believed. Back in 2011, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to three astronomers for their discovery, in the late 1990s, that the universe is expanding at an accelerating pace. Their conclusions were based on analysis of Type Ia supernovae — the spectacular thermonuclear explosion of dying stars — picked
up by the Hubble space telescope and large ground-based telescopes. It led to the widespread acceptance of the idea that the universe
is dominated by a mysterious substance named ‘dark energy’ that drives this accelerating expansion. In a paper published in the
Nature journal Scientific Reports, the team of scientists led by Professor Subir Sarkar of Oxford University’s Department of Physics has cast doubt on this cosmological concept. “Naturally, a lot of work will be necessary to convince the physics community of this, but our work serves to demonstrate that a key pillar of the standard cosmological model is rather shaky,” Sarkar said. Making use of a vastly increased data set — a catalogue of 740 Type Ia supernovae — the researchers found the evidence for acceleration may be flimsier than thought, with the data being consistent with a constant rate of expansion.

Chasing 261, tailenders Dhawal Kulkarni (25 not out) and Umesh Yadav (7) put up a record 10th wicket stand of 34 against the Kiwis but the equation was too steep for them. In the end, India were all out for 241 in 48.4 overs. Pacer Tim Southee (3/40) and all-rounder James Neesham (2/38) wrecked India’s chase as the hosts had only opener Ajinkya Rahane (57) scoring a fifty, failing to once again convert his good start. Special CBI court in Bengaluru acquitted former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP state unit President B.S. Yeddyurappa in a bribery case, which the Congress dubbed as shocking. Pronouncing the verdict in a packed courtroom in Bengaluru, Judge R.B. Dharamaguder also exonerated Yeddyurappa’s two sons B.Y. Raghavendra and B.Y. Vijayendra, son-in-law R.N. Sohan Kumar and seven others in the Rs.40-crore graft case for lack of evidence. “Justice is done. I stand vindicated,” a relieved Yeddyurappa tweeted soon after the verdict even as frenzied BJP cadres celebrated the verdict by bursting fire crackers and hailing him outside the court. “I am happy that false allegations and politically motivated charges have been dismissed,” asserted Yeddyurappa. The Central Bureau of Investigation registered the case on May 15, 2012, under the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, regarding alleged grant of leases to mining firms as quid pro quo for donations made to Yeddyurappa’s family-run Prerana Education Trust at Shimoga during his tenure from 2008-2011. he other accused included former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Minis-

The Supreme Court on May 11, 2012, directed the CBI to register the case on the recommendation of a Central Empowered Committee appointed by it for investigation into the alleged kickbacks for granting mining leases to the JSW and its subsidiary South West Mining Ltd. The cases pertain to the Rs 10crore donation by South West Mining to Prerana and the mining firm purchasing 1.12 acres of land that was freed from government control (denotified) from Raghavendra and Vijayendra in 2010 when Yeddyu-
rappa was the Chief Minister. The CEC also accused Yeddyurappa’s kin of receiving Rs 6 crore as bribe from mining baron Praveen Chandra through real estate firms set up by them. Yeddyurappa, who was the first Chief Minister of the ruling BJP in south India, resigned after the Lokayuktha (ombudsman) Justice N. Santosh Hegde (retd) indicted him and recommended his trial in the mining scam. Claiming that the verdict had come as a relief to lakhs of party workers, Yeddyurappa said that justice had given him an opportunity to bring the main opposition party in the state back to power in the 2018 assembly elections.

ith the Centre doling out subsidies on renewable energy, Kerala is trying out newer models of windmills and also a solar-windmill hybrid system. One such unit of 300watt micro windmill set up at the Kerala State Electricity Board headquarters in the capital city has now become the cynosure of all eyes, with even Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan taking a look at it on Tuesday. “This unit has been set up just as a demonstration piece, besides the one that we set up to study the efficacy, before taking it to the people,” said KSEB official C. Shedilal. “It’s been a month now since we

set up this one, and so far we have found it to be efficient. For the next three months, we will analysis this in detail and will be able to
know all the operational details,” said Shedilal. These units have been developed using the Innovation Fund by a
start-up firm in Kochi. The entire unit, including the batteries, cost Rs 2.38 lakh. Likewise, the KSEB Renewable Energy Department is also working on a solar-windmill hybrid system. This is a one-kilowatt system, where 600 watts would be generated using a micro windmill and a 400watt solar panel. In Kerala, maximum wind is received from May to September and it is the same time when it rains. So, a combination of solar and windmill systems is ideal. Moreover, the Centre also gives out a subsidy of Rs one lakh and the total cost of the installation after the subsidy would be less than Rs one lakh. “According to studies, this unit will generate around six units of
electricity every day and it would be more than enough for an average family. This is quite popular and used extensively in many places. So, we are working on it too,” added Shedilal. With Kerala spending Rs 6,000 crore annually to procure power from outside the state, as 65 per cent of the annual power requirements of the state is sourced from outside the state and with Climate change protocols all set to become strict, Kerala is in a hurry to take these projects to the people. “In Kerala, even though the scope for windmill power generation is possible up to about 1,000 MW, at present there are two places in Palakkad and Idukki districts where giant windmills produce around 100 MW,” said an official.

M-COMMERCE shines on Diwali According to analysts, mobile commerce is set to overtake web browsers in driving sales this Diwali IANS, NEW DELHI
W
ith rapid increase in mobile data consumption, mobile commerce (m-commerce) is set to overtake web browsers in driving sales soon, according to a seasonal data in anticipation of Diwali, released. The data gathered by Criteo, the performance marketing technology company, showed that during the festive season last year, “40 per cent of the online traffic on major retail companies was generated by mobile phones”. Clearly, m-commerce is experiencing a tremendous rise in India. “Customers prefer buying new brands from upcoming shopping websites, where they are offered best prices as well as discounts. With the ease of m-commerce, they get the option to explore thousands of brands at the click of a button,” a Criteo statement said. The in-app availability of e-commerce companies has further triggered the rise of m-commerce in India, according to the company. With the growing popularity of e-commerce companies in India,

the festive season presents with an opportunity for a fierce competition among key Indian retailers. Various e-commerce platforms launch mega-sales before the festive period, thereby launching a brand war with high budget spending on advertising as well as sales offers on consumer durable products and services. Based on consumers’ online browsing and buying activity during the peak season last year (Octo-

Leading this effort, the Prime Minister shared through social media, a special video featuring his appeal to the people to send messages to our brave armed forces personnel. Guyana MP calls for world unity If we understand that the world is one family, we can achieve that illusive dream of unity in this global village, says Vindhya Vahini Persaud at Diwali Nagar festival PARAS RAMOUTAR, PORT OF SPAIN

he Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago celebrated its annual Diwali Nagar festival where the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha (GHDS) president called for purity and unity in the world. “If we understand that the world is one family, we can achieve that illusive dream of unity in this global village,” GHDS President and Guyana’s Member of Parliament Vindhya Vahini Persaud said. Addressing the 30th annual Diwali Nagar at Chaguanas, Central Trinidad, Persaud urged the Trinidad and Tobago government to transcend its borders and touch the cultural diaspora. The annual festival was organized by the National Council of Indian Culture (NCIC), under the leadership of Deokienanan Sharma. Among those present were newly-appointed Indian High Commissioner Bishwadip Dey and US Ambassador John Estrada. Exploring the theme ‘Ganga
Maa-Mother of the Ocean and Rivers’, Persaud said people must learn to act in the best interest of those with whom they come into contact every day. “It is said that the water of the Ganga river is the purest ... this kind of purity can be attained by being pure in thought, words and deeds as life is like a river with many ups and downs. Life gives us joy, happiness and hope,” she said. Persaud urged leaders and all citizens to not only understand women and their vulnerability, but also their inherent
capabilities. “I think the people of Trinidad and Tobago definitely understand the meaning that women are pivotal to nation building,” she added. The NCIC’s Public Relations Officer Surujdeo Mangaroo also hailed the ceremony for its unique spirit. “The annual Diwali Nagar, the Council’s flagship project, induces innovative programmes with increased participation of the youth -- especially women upon whom depends the future stability, progress and development of the Indian culture and Hinduism,” he said.

Pre-Diwali panic as millions of debit cards ‘tainted’ The problem hit mainly debit cards and several banks, including the State Bank of India (SBI) have already started blocking their customers’ debit cards in the festive season
which controls all the retail payments systems in the country to declared early September that there “is no compromise at NPCI and our systems are fully safe and secure.” NPCI handles over 25 million transactions daily, including RuPay cards, of which more than 290 million are currently in circulation. In the current scenario, the SBI
alone has blocked more than 600,000 debit cards while assuring that the malware-related security breach was reportedly detected in the non-SBI ATM network. It justified the move to ensure customers’ confidential personal data is not compromised while swiping in ATMs for various transactions. One of the card network companies MasterCard said on Thursday that its “own systems have not been breached.” “We are working on the investigations with the regulators, issuers, acquirers, global and local law enforcement agencies and third party payment networks to assess the current situation,” a MasterCard spokesperson said. It has advised the consumers to review their account statements and activity, and if any unusual or fraudulent transactions are suspected, they should contact the concerned bank for more assistance. According to banking circles, several other banks have also experienced similar problems as a few ATMs have been hit by a malware which has a high potential to compromise customers data.
Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra have occupied the top three positions for cyber crimes registered under the new IT Act in India, it added. “Internet frauds alone have cost India a whopping $4 billion (about Rs 24,630 crore) in 2013 as cyber criminals are

parking a pre-Diwali panic among consumers, over three million debit cards of various banks are believed to be ‘tainted’ following a suspected security breach, even as investigations have begun into the reasons behind the security risk, officials said. The problem has hit mainly debit cards, and several banks, including the State Bank Of India (SBI), have already started blocking their customers’ debit cards and re-issuing fresh ones to them free of cost. This can take around a week, leaving barely any time for people wanting to do Diwali shopping or go on vacations. Debit or credit cards are prone to security issues when unauthorized parties gain access to the confidential data embedded on them, even as it is being swiped in an automatic teller machine (ATM). A bank official said that customers are particularly sensitive about their debit cards which are directly linked to either salary or

ollowing the unprecedented security breach reported earlier this week that has “compromised” card data of many private and state-run banks, industry body Assocham on Sunday said it had earlier cautioned about such frauds. Citing its recent study, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) said that “India has become a favorite hunting ground for global hackers and criminals”. “The credit/debit/ATM card
frauds as detected by some of the largest banks were waiting to happen as India has been on the radar of the global cyber criminals who hack into the computer servers using malware, an AssochamMahindra SSG joint study had forewarned,” the industry chamber said in a statement here. According to this study, India was the third biggest target for hackers after the US and Japan. “Shocked that we are by such large volume of frauds forcing most of the big banks to recall their swiping cards, Assocham has been continuously sensitising the gov-
ernment, RBI and the banks against the unfolding cyber risks,” Secretary General D.S. Rawat said in the statement. The study also found mobile frauds to be an area of concern for companies, as 35-40 per cent of financial transactions are done via mobile devices and this menace is expected to grow to 60-65 per cent by 2017. These attacks have been observed to be originating from the cyberspace of a number of countries, including the US, Europe, Brazil, Turkey, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Algeria and the UAE, the statement said.

Tips for economical Diwali vacations IANS, NEW DELHI
W
ant to spend quality time with your family on a vacation, but by not causing a hole in your pocket? Travel at less popular times as the price of flights varies considerably depending on the month, day and time of travel and try a private room instead of a hotel, experts say. In 2015, 49 percent of travellers planning getaways for Dusshera and Diwali favored international destinations over domestic breaks. Experts from Skyscanner.com, travel search company, have shared secrets to make holiday getaways in 2016 lighter on the pockets of Indian travellers. Travel at less popular times: The price of flights varies considerably depending on the month, day and even time of travel. Avoiding the weekends can make a huge impact on the price.
Fly indirect: In case there is more time but less money, try flights with a stop-over. Indirect routes to the main destination will cost much less and will even give one the time to explore more than one destination; thus making the most with the least.
Mix and match your flights: Using a combination of airlines can also prove to be an effective cost saving strategy. Different airlines charge differently on similar routes. Mix and match the airlines to find the best price combination to suit the pocket.
Fly from an alternative airport: Even though there may be an airport at the doorstep, don’t rule out the possibility that it may be cheaper to fly from one slightly further away. It may work out cheaper, even with the cost of a train or bus ticket to reach the
alternative airport. Bring your own food on board: Many low-cost airlines charge for food on board and it is often extremely pricey. Save yourself a small fortune by taking along snacks instead of buying them on the plane or in the airport. Beat the baggage fees: If you’re worried about excess baggage charges, why not wear your extra items instead of cramming them into your case? There are some fantastic products on the market that let you take additional belongings on your person ensuring they won’t count as excess baggage. Weigh your luggage before you leave home: Some of us get to the airport to find we’re over our baggage limit and end up paying inflated charges. Avoid this by weighing your bag before you leave home and take out any unnecessary items if you find you’re over the limit.

I
t is that time of the year again when we light our homes with diyas and lanterns, decorate floors with colorful rangolis, eat without worrying about calorie intake and burst crackers. Diwali is round the corner and people are making all efforts to make festival memorable and enjoyable. There are numerous customs associated with this festival, but common to all is the lighting of homes, pathways, temples and even government buildings, with hundreds of small clay lamps and candles. Firecrackers, thought to frighten away evil spirits are also used with abandon, which makes this a particular popular festival for children. Though Diwali is celebrated across the country, but it has got different mythological stories attached to it. While in north India, it is associated with Ramayana, in the southern part, Deepavali (as is is called) marks Lord Krishna’s consort Satyabhama slaying the demon Narakasura. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the festivities center over two days — Naraka Chaturthasi and Deepavali Amaavasya. It starts at the crack of dawn and carry on well into the night. During these two days people visit local temples along with their families to seek the blessings of their respective gods. The night sky is lit up with a scintillating array of noisy fireworks. Some areas host local stage story telling called Hari Katha while some places put a huge Narakasura dummy made with fireworks. This will be burst by a person dressed as Lord Krishna or, more accurately, a costume of Satyabhama, the consort of Lord Krishna, who actually killed the demonNarakasura; an event that is celebrated as Diwali for generations.
In Karnataka, family members gather together for the three days celebration. Deepavali is celebrated on the day before and day following Amavasye as Naraka Chaturdashi. The next day is Lakshmi mahaapooje on Amavaasye. On the fourth day, the house, especially the entrance is decorated with flowers and floor decorations to invite Bali into their homes.

day of Goddess Lakshmi and the birthday of Dhanvantari. On the night of Dhanteras, diyas (lamps) are ritually kept burning all through the nights in honor of Lakshmi and Dhanvantari. On the occasion of Dhanteras people follows the custom of buying items particularly gold or silver articles. Merchants, traders and retailers stock up, put articles on sale and prepare for this day. Lakshmi Puja is performed in the evening. The second day of festivities is called Choti Diwali and is celebrated by early morning religious rituals and festivities followed on. Diwali, which falls on the third day is the main festive day. People wear new clothes or their best outfits as the evening approaches. They light diyas and offer pujas to Lakshmi, Ganesha and other deities. According to tradition and customs, it is believed that Lakshmi roams the earth on Diwali night. On the evening of Diwali, people open their doors and windows to welcome Lakshmi and place diya lights on their windowsills and balcony ledges to invite her in. Small earthenware lamps filled with oil are lighted and placed in rows by some Hindus along the parapets of temples and houses. The day after Diwali, is celebrated as Padwa, a ritual that marks love and mutual devotion between the wife and husband. The husbands give thoughtful gifts, or elaborate ones to respective spouses. In many regions, newly married daughters with their husbands are invited for special meals. The last day of festival is called Bhai dooj which celebrates the sister-brother loving relationship. Call it Diwali or Deepavali, the festive spirit unites the whole country.

IT’S TIME FOR SPECIAL BEAUTY CARE As Indians, in the country and abroad, celebrate the festival of lights, here are a few tips from Shahnaz Husain for women to look at their best IANS, SHAHNAZ HUSAIN
T
he festive season is here again! Soon it will be Diwali. Start taking care of the skin and hair a few weeks before. Night-time cleansing is an absolute must, especially for city dwellers. Chemical air pollutants, dirt and grime hang in the air. They are potent skin irritants. Make-up should also be removed at night. All these can cause dryness of the skin, or disrupt the normal acidalkaline balance of the skin, leading to rashes and other eruptive conditions, like pimples and acne. As Diwali approaches, the weather also changes. Seasonal changes also influence the skin. The humidity becomes less and the skin loses moisture to the atmosphere. For normal to dry skin, cleanse twice a day, with a cleansing gel containing ingredients like aloe vera. Massage the cleanser lightly into the skin and remove it with moist cotton wool. Then apply rose water or a skin tonic using cotton wool. During the day, use a sunscreen before going out in the sun. Or, use a moisturizer if you are indoors. Moisturizers are available in cream and liquid

form. For dry skin, at night, after cleansing, apply a nourishing cream and massage it on the face. Wipe off with moist cotton wool. You can apply a serum afterwards. Oily skins also need moisture. But, if you apply creams, you can get pimples. To moisturize oily skin, mix one teaspoon pure glycerin with 100 ml rose water. Keep it in an airtight jar in the fridge. Use a little of this lotion after cleansing. This
moisturizes the skin, without making it oily. Use a cleansing milk or face-wash to cleanse the skin. The use of facial scrubs helps to brighten the skin and add a glow. Use a facial scrub twice a week. Mix ground almonds or rice powder with curd and a pinch of haldi. You can also add dried and powdered orange and lemon peels. Apply on the face and rub gently on the skin with small circular movements.
Then wash off with water. Apply a sunscreen before going out in the sun. So, you can look for a sunscreen lotion or cream, depending on your skin type. You should also look for day creams, nourishing or night creams. As Diwali and winter approach, try some home remedies to relieve dryness. Apply honey on the face daily for 10 minutes and wash off with water. If you have an aloe vera plant at home, the gel found in the inner portion of the leaves can be applied on the face to moisturize it. Grate carrots and apply on the face for 15 to 20 minutes. Carrot is rich in Vitamin A and good for nourishing the skin in winter. It
suits all skin types. Mix half a teaspoon honey, one teaspoon rose water and one teaspoon dried milk powder. Mix into a paste and apply on the face. Remove after 20 minutes with water. Suits normal to dry skin. Applying mayonnaise or egg yolk on the skin also helps to relieve dryness. Suits dry skin. Nourish the hair with oil treatments once or twice a week. Heat olive oil and apply on the scalp and hair. Then dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the water and wrap the towel around the head, like a turban. Keep it on for five minutes. Repeat three-four times. This helps the hair and scalp absorb oil better.

YUM DIWALI IS HERE! Craving for sweet delights in the festive season? Do not opt for laddus and halwas from a sweet shop when you can easily make them at home. Make the festivities more special with home-made sweets for your loved ones.
Coconut laddu ahoy! INGREDIENTS: Coconut – grated, fresh, 2 cups; Milk – 1 cup; Khoya/Mawa – 1 cup (250 gms), made from 1 ltr whole milk; Sugar – 2 cups, adjust as per taste; Cardamom powder – 2 tsp; Ghee – 1 tsp HOW TO PREPARE: For coconut laddus make a smooth paste of the grated coconut and the milk. Heat a deep-bottomed, preferably non-stick kadhai or pan, and add the ghee. And then pour the coconut paste, and stir. Keeping the heat on low, add the khoya/mawa, and mix well until smooth. Cook this on a low flame for 4 to 5 minutes, let it thicken slightly.
Now add the sugar and cardamom powder and keep stirring, keeping flame low till the mixture starts to thicken and bubble. While preparing, be careful of spills and spatters as you stir. It is crucial to keep stirring until the mixture has formed a ‘pak’, or basically, it should start to thicken and lump together. This process might take as long as 20 to 30 minutes on a low flame. Once the mixture is cool enough to touch, start making laddoos, or peda shapes, or any other shape of choice. Store in an airtight container, or keep in a greased thali if you plan to serve it right away. Refrigerate excess, keeps good for up to two weeks.
Awesome milk peda Mouthwatering boondi halwa INGREDIENTS REQUIRED: Milk powder - 2 cups milk powder; Condensed milk - 4 cups; Ghee - 3 tablespoon; Saffron - 1/10 teaspoon; Pistachia - 1 tablespoon How to prepare: Soak the saffron in 2 tbsp of warm milk and keep aside. Heat a non-stick pan and combine the milk and milk powder in it. Stir continue to make a smooth and lump free paste.
Add ghee and constantly mix it on a low flame. Now mix the saffron milk with a continuous stirring and without getting it burnt. After 6-8minutes, the mixture will become soft and sticky. Switch off the flame and allow it to become warm. Take little butter or ghee in your hands and start making round shaped ladoos from the dough. Place some chopped pistachios in the middle of each peda and serve.
INGREDIENTS REQUIRED: Besan — 1-1/2 cups; Water - 3/4 cup; Oil for deep frying. For making sugar syrup you will need sugar - 1 cup, water - 1/2 cup 4 tbsp, a pinch of cardamom powder and few saffron strands. INGREDIENTS REQUIRED FOR FLAVORING INGREDIENTS: Few chopped mixed nuts (almonds, cashew nuts, pistachios, melon seeds); Raisins - 1 tbsp; Warm milk - 4 tbsp; Ghee - 1 tbsp. Preparation method: Soak the saffron in 4 tbsp of warm milk. Sieve the flour and remove out any coarse bits. Add water in flour and mix well for making a smooth and lump free batter. Adjust the water to ensure the batter of thick consistency and keep the batter aside for few minutes and in the meantime start making sugar syrup. Take a vessel and mix all the ingredients for making sugar syrup. Stir them on a low heat, till the sugar is completely dissolved. Once it is ready, turn off the heat and keep aside. Heat oil in a pan, put a drop of
batter to check whether the oil is properly heated or not. If boondi is instantly rising up, that means oil is ready for frying. To begin, hold a perforated spoon over the pan and pour 2 tbsp of batter on it. Spread with spoon and let the boondi fall in hot oil. When the batter drops into the pan through the perforations, it forms small droplets which then get fried in the oil. Stir the boondis
continuously till the color is little changed. Once boondi is done, with the help of perforated spoon, take it out from the pan and then mix into the sugar syrup. Stir the boondis in the syrup thoroughly so that they are coated well. When the boondi cools down sufficiently, sprinkle the dry fruits, raisins and saffron milk on it and mix. Boondi Halwa is now ready.

C
ustomers are increasingly looking for the novelty factor in jewelery purchases this festive season, says Sangeeta Dewan, who has over 20 years of designing experience and is currently the principal designer at Indian brand Zoya. The latest launch of the brand, from the House of Tata, is a collection titled Krsna, which captures the popular legends that surround the deity. The statement pieces feature the picturesque images of the crown of Krishna — the peacock feather, the matki, flute, iconic chariots, Govardhan Parvat; his adolescent years with Radha, Sudarshan Chakra and the Geeta Updesh. The faces and silhouettes of mythological characters have forever adorned jewelery pieces. But what has changed about their designing over the years? “Designing for jewelery is challenging owing to the ever-changing trends as well as needs of the customers. “Over the years, design has also evolved from traditional to new, innovative and modern forms. “Today, customers are looking
for unique and new design ideas. In this collection, Zoya focuses on the story of Krishna and showcases it in unique, abstract and contemporary forms. Customers are open to purchasing such jewellery pieces since it is unique and emanates a select style statement,” said the National Institute of Fashion Technology alumnus. Krsna features a gamut of vibrant colors such as turquoise, varied hues of blue and emerald greens. The craft palette features the technique of painting enamel along with Champlev© enamel in its rich Indian avatar and partaj engraving along with glittering
polki in 24 carat kundan setting. Such capsule collections are catching the fancy of customers who go for high-end jewelery, Dewan said. “Capsule collections are derived from original and innovative thoughts and emotions that strike a chord and inspire one to design limited edition pieces. It is a certain theme or idea that strongly motivates designers like me to create a niche collection that caters to exclusivity and selectiveness desired by customers, as more and more customers look for creativity and novelty in jewelery,” said the designer, who was associated with Tanishq.
NEW DELHI: Food is an important element of all parties, so getting smart preparations right for Diwali festivities should be a priority, says an expert who feels assorted canapes and mini pizzas are interesting things to serve. onion, green chillies, tomato, coriander, vegetarian mayonnaise, ketchup, chaat masala, red chilli powder and black salt in a bowl and mix well. Add nachos and sweet corn to above mix, toss gently, garnish with sev and serve. * Assorted canapés: Make assorted canapés in minutes with vegetarian mayonnaise, tandoori mayonnaise and olive oil mayonnaise using everyday items like corn, paneer or potato. Base can be made using biscuits or toasted bread slices. * Mini pizza: Make tasty mini pizzas just the way they make in pizzerias in Italy, but with an Indian twist. Choose pizza topping to add tangy and creamy flavor and top it up with basic ingredients like onion, capsicum, paneer or soya chunks. —IANS
Tips to dress your best IANS, NEW DELHI
L
ooking your best is the only option a girl has during the season of festivities. To stand out this festive season try a hand-woven sari like chanderi or opt for a beautiful chikankari kurta with jeans to keep your fashion game on point this Diwali, says an expert. Here are some tips from the experts of LimeRoad style council that will give you a sassy makeover. Be beautiful in a sari: Ditch your old chiffons and georgettes and lay your hands-on hand woven maheshwaris, pochampally and chanderi silks in vibrant colors. Team it with a contrast blouse to
look stylish. Bring back your wedding finery: Create looks that are unique yet pocket friendly. That wedding lehenga that you toiled over is probably gathering dust in an old trunk. Club a choli from your
wedding ensemble with a long ethnic skirt in one colour and a simple stole and bring out the stylist in you. Throw a pair of chunky earrings to complete the look. Do the unexpected: While Diwali is all about looking colorful and bright, there are many who believe in looking subtle. And subtle, mind you is not always boring. Pair your jeans with a short chikankari kurta in pink, green or blue and give out chic vibes this festive season. Add a vibrant piece of silk stole to elevate your look and club a huge pair of silver earrings for a fashionable look. Old is gold: Fish out your old sari from your cupboard. Drape it into a dhoti, club your favorite noodle strap top.

Modelling over acting for Sonam
I’m quite romantic: Shruti Haasan
A
ctress Sonam Kapoor says she turned down a modelling offer by ace photographer-producer Atul Kasbekar to pursue a career in acting. Sonam, daughter of actor Anil Kapoor, forayed into Bollywood with Ranbir Kapoor in 2007 with Saawariya. During an appearance on an episode of Vogue BFFs, she said: “I remember it was at a party which was for a cosmetic company, in 2006, I think. This tall person walks up to me — which is Atul — and he’s like, ‘Oh my God, do you want to model?’ I had just started acting in Saawariya. And I wasn’t out at all, publicly, because my parents had kept me away from the press and the paps (paparazzi) and everything.”

A
ctress Shruti Haasan says though people consider her as a rocker, she feels that she is a “romantic girl”. “I’m quite romantic, but it depends, you need inspiration also, if it’s a silly fellow, I can’t be romantic with them. People look at me and think that I should be taken out for rock concert. I love the song I love you from ‘Bodyguard’ because there is some innocence and fun to it,” Shruti said on Zoom channel’s show Diwali Masti. Talking about actor Emraan Hashmi, with whom she shared screen space in the film “Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji”, Shruti said that she was very nervous to work with him. “Emraan is a wonderful co star. Really chilled out and friendly but I was very nervous with him because Dil toh Baccha Hai Ji was like my fourth film and in front of him I was even more nervous,” she added.
I was a fashion victim: Shahid
A
ctor Shahid Kapoor, who has launched his own fashion brand called SKULT, says there was a time when he had poor sense of fashion. “I think I was a fashion victim 10 years back. I had absolutely no idea about what to wear or where to buy. I didn’t have any knowledge of Google or social media where you could discover what’s going on,” Shahid said here. He launched his fashion brand here, and it will be exclusively available on Abof. The actor said: “I would wear a bright yellow T-shirt, tight jeans and boots, and thought it was cool. So, it’s been a long journey.”
I fear of losing stardom: Ajay Devgn
A
ctor-filmmaker Ajay Devgn says he fears losing stardom and it would affect him if he stops receiving love from his fans. “I fear losing my stardom. Yes, you do have that fear ... at the end of the day, you get this habit of getting love from people and suddenly if it stops, it really affects you,” Ajay told IANS. “I think I have opened up. I have been forced to open up, but still I think I am quite reserved,” added the 46-yearold. He also believes that once you get love of the audience, some films work and some films don’t,” said Ajay, who is busy promoting his film Shivaay.
‘Want to share screen with Priyanka’
A
ctress Parineeti Chopra says she is waiting to work with her cousin and popular Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra in a project. Asked if she is keen to share screen with the Quantico star, Parineeti told IANS: “Wow... I am also waiting for that. If I have a great opportunity to work with her or sing with her that would be something I really want to do, but something really great has to come for both of us to do it together”. On the career front, Parineeti, who turned 28 on Saturday, will next be seen in Meri Pyaari Bindu alongside Ayushmann Khurrana.

HI INDIA-Falguni Pathak’s US
tour a grand success
BY ADITI BRAHMBHATT
C
HICAGO – A Falguni Pathak show is a ticket to a magical place and the Dandiya Queen proved this yet again by serenading thousands of Indian Americans during her just-concluded 12-day tour across the United States. This Navratri season, Hi India Events & Shakti Group, Hemant Brahmbhatt, and Ketan hosted the world-renowned artiste who performed in Chicago. and six other cities San Fransisco, Dallas, Austin, Chicago, NJ-PA & Seattle with HP Entertainment Hetal Patel The entire Falguni Pathak US tour was a smash hit what with each city attracting more than 6000 garba enthusiasts from the Indian community to celebrate the nine-night festival of
dance and rhythm with the Dandiya Queen. Biggest event According to Hemant Brahmbhatt, Pathak’s troupe of 20 musicians is the best in the field and boasts best lightsand-sound system in India. Indeed, her Navratri programme is the biggest event in the Gujarati social calendar, and it is more than an extravaganza. Says Aditi Brahmbhatt from hi INDiA: “All events were a complete sell-out what with thousands of eagerbeaver participants enjoying dancing Raas Garba. Toe-tapping music The whirling dancers, clapping hands, distinct sound of wooden sticks struck together, toe-tapping music and people wearing vibrant colorful clothes marked the Navratri celebrations at Pathak’s popular shows. This is part of the worship of Durga Mata who symbolizes the victory of good over evil; the Navratri celebration marks a festival of nine nights during which Hindus worship goddesses Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati, the goddesses of health, prosperity and knowledge, respectively. While Navratri and Dussehra (the 10th day) are celebrated by Hindus with regional variations, the most famous one is from the state of Gujarat. Falguni Pathak’s name needs no introduction. Aditi Brahmbhatt, who coordinated her shows throughout the
US, says that the Dandiya Queen began as a local performer in Mumbai’s suburbs, who became a sudden Indipop star in the late Nineties. She shied away from Bollywood but still commands devotion that transcends faith and religion. The organizers pointed out that Pathak’s US tour was a huge success because preparations started months prior to the events as decisions regarding the invitations for the unique singer and his troupe, with his massive orchestra, venue and sponsors had to be made well in advance for such a hugely successful event . Sweet voice Ketan Patel claims that the Indians in the US felt that Pathak had a very feminine sweet voice, a la early Lata Mangeshkar, and also has a talent for identifying folk, pop and Bollywood songs to adapt to the genre.. “Her voice which draws her frenzied fans is so sweet and she creates a truly romantic atmosphere,” says Hetal Patel. Pathak is the only female performer in India to carve an identity and a career for herself without being subject to conventional standards of femininity, in a way which has never compromised her ability to fill up stadiums with thousands of adoring fans.In sum, the vibrant US tour of Pathak was a grand success, thanks to the marathon efforts and hard work put in by Hemant Brahmbhatt, publisher of Hi India, Ketan Patel from Shakti group as well as financial support from all the sponsors and dedicated volunteers.

American College Cricket deal with SET Asia BY A STAFF WRITER E W YO R K , N Y - - S o n y Entertainment Television Asia (SET Asia) has acquired Exclusive Media Rights for American College Cricket, and will be the Official Broadcast Partner beginning the season of 2016. SET Asia will broadcast major match-ups including regional and national semi-final and final matches. Founder and president of American College Cricket Lloyd Jodah said, “It’s the right time, and Sony is the ideal Broadcast Partner for American College Cricket to go back on TV. Since March 2009 we’ve been setting the bar for cricket in America, and Sony’s experience in broadcasting major tournaments will ensure we take cricket in the USA to the next level.” He added: “America & Canada will get to see the young talent representing wellknown universities, which in addition to their educational reputations, are major brands in sports such as football, basketball, baseball, soccer and more. American College Cricket has created a new platform which, together with SET Asia will raise the stature of the game in North America significantly higher.” Across the US and Canada, there is a growing number of students who are ardent cricket fans. Many play at a local or regional level. ACC & SET Asia will provide opportunities for them to play the sport at a competitive, national level. With an everincreasing interest in the game and growth in available resources, cricket in North America is now poised to exponentially expand its player and viewership base. Talking about the role of SET Asia, Jaideep Janakiram, SVP International business- head of the Americas, said, “SET Asia is developing relevant, localized content to cater to the preferences of youth in the United States. We believe cricket, played locally, will be a driver for success. We are excited about the partnership with ACC, not just broadcast rights but also

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- There are safety concerns among some University of Chicago students after their apartment building was burglarized multiple times. The University police said they were trying to help students along South University Boulevard feel safer after they reported their off-campus apartments have been broken into. Shilpa Mantri and her roommates now lock themselves into their Hyde Park apartment with an extra layer of lots. While their place in the 5400 block of South University sat mostly empty before school started, that didn’t stop it from being a target. “My subletter was the last one to leave, and saw that all the doors, windows, rooms, cabinets, everything had just been looked through,” Mantri said. The same thing happened in the basement apartment downstairs. “I lost two large computer monitors, brand new in packaging. We lost multiple TVs,” said Michael Meng. “The apartment above us, they also had a break-in on the first day of school, and then two days later the third-floor apartment had gotten broken into,” Mantri said. Four break-ins later, the students said the building’s landlord added metal gates to the back doors. The Chicago police are investigating the burglaries. The landlord has also added security cameras around the building to make the students feel more comfortable.

the key role we play in amplifying the game in North America.” American College Cricket has been the leading brand in cricket in the US. It has received national, regional and local press coverage for its efforts, including the first web stream, and broadcast on ESPN in the US. It laid the groundwork for making
cricket “the fastest-growing sport in US colleges”. Thanks to ACC’s efforts, colleges are recognizing the popularity of the game. Many colleges now have cricket fields on campus (often multi-use) and students in other countries, particularly India have been researching American universities with strong cricket programs.

and a vigorous ‘Bhangra’ got an enthusiastic response from the packed hall. The presence of several stalls of Indian cuisine, apparel, craft and jewelry ensured that the visitors had ample opportunity to engage in the festive mood of eating and shopping. The evening concluded with a colorful display of fireworks which brought a tinge of nostalgia to Indian Americans who recalled the robust Diwali celebrations they enjoyed growing up in India. Sikh Religious Society hosts community meet BY A STAFF WRITER ALATINE, IL -- A social-political gathering was hosted on October 26 in the sanctified place of the Gurudwara Saheb of Palatine by the Sikh Religious Society as well as several community groups such as SAAPRI, ICIRR, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Centro Informacion, Northern Alliance for Immigrants, Lao American Association and BAPS. C a n d i d a t e f o r U S Se n a t e , R a j a Krishnamoorthy, was in attendance although his opponent was not present and would be given a chance to attend if rescheduled. The main topics that were discussed were Higher Education, Immigration Reform, Gun Control and some information was given on how to work towards compromise by Krishnamoorthy. Students and activists asked questions to the panel comprising Rajendra Mago (host/MC) and Krishnamoorthy. Specifically, for higher education, a $15k tax credit to parents who are paying for their child’s education was introduced by Krishnamoorthy, as well as a call for expansion of Pell Grant programs by the Federal government. “A people first, then party and country first, then party” attitude was suggested by Krishnamoorthy for bringing about a real change to our communities. Expansion and enforcement of gun control laws in accordance with a ‘no-fly no-buy’ policy was discussed. The evening concluded with a round of applause for all who attended and a traditional langhar meal was offered to all guests by the host organization. A vote of thanks and a reminder to vote on or before November 8 was given by Mago along with an invite to hear the melodious spiritual readings in the main hall of the facility.

community news Early Voting & Registration at 51 Chicago sites FRIDAY, 28 OCTOBER, 2016
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL- Early Voting and Registration Services are available for Chicago voters at 51 locations across the city now through Nov. 7. Every Chicago site will be open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Starting Oct. 31, all 51 sites will offer weeknight hours. “Early Voting and Registration sites are now up and running in every Chicago ward,” said Election Board Chairwoman Marisel A. Hernandez. “We say Early Voting and Registration together, because now we need people to associate these two acts. We want the people who need to register to get it done now, when it’s on their terms – and not wait until Election Day when you have to go to your home precinct place and possibly encounter a line.” Voters who need to a file name or address change, or who need to register for the first time, will need to present two forms of ID, at least one of which shows the voter’s current address. Those who register will vote during the same visit. Voters don’t need a reason or excuse, and Chicago voters may use any Early Voting & Registration site in the city, regardless of where they live. Hernandez said Early Voting is popular because it’s convenient for people who already have their minds made up. “People don’t want to worry about a scheduling conflict on Election Day,” she noted. Sundays are the days with the fewest users and the shortest lines, Hernandez added. For more information, Chicago voters
