Skipper Virat Kohli will also be looking to shrug off his disastrous IPL campaign and start afresh in the eight team ICC tournament. India are placed in Group B along with Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka, and will start their campaign on June 4 against archrivals Pakistan at Edgbaston. The last time India and Pakistan were engaged in a 50-over game was during the ICC World Cup in 2015. But even as meat is again available in Lucknow and other cities and there has been a marginal decline in

the targeting of those involved in inter-faith romances, an even greater challenge has emerged for the lawenforcing authorities in the caste conflicts between Dalits and Thakurs in the Saharanpur area. The fact that the Chief Minister himself is a Thakur hasn’t helped in restoring amity between the two communities, especially when overzealous officials told the Mushahars, another Dalit group, to wash themselves with soap and use deodorants before Yogi Adityanath visited their Mainpur Kot village in Kushinagar district. A similar incident occurred when the Chief Minister went to the home of a martyred BSF jawan where an air-conditioner was temporarily installed and a sofa put in place during the visit. There was a further blow to the BJP’s outreach to the Dalits when the gau rakshaks (cow vigilantes)

lynched a group of Dalits for skinning a cow, their traditional occupation, in Una in Gujarat. The fallout of these incidents has been the emergence of a new generation of Dalit leaders like 30-yearold lawyer, Chandrashekhar Azad “Ravan”, who led the so-called Bhim Army (named after the Dalit icon, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar) for protests against the Saharanpur violence in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. His call for a Dalit-Muslim-backward caste alliance against BJP aims at undercutting Modi’s tactic of bringing non-Jatav Dalits and nonYadav backward castes to the BJP’s fold, yielding handsome dividends for the party in the Uttar Pradesh assembly election by leaving only the Jatavs and Yadavs with Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav, respectively, thereby fracturing the Dalit and OBC vote banks of Bahujan Samaj Party and Samajwadi Party.

U

S President Donald Trump is expected to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, officials said this week. The US leader refused to reaffirm his country’s commitment to the accord at a G7 summit in Italy last week. He said he would make up his mind after returning to the US. The decision would be a significant foreign policy break with nearly every other nation on earth and a major reversal of the Obama administration’s efforts on climate change, CNN reported. Former President Barack Obama and a host of other countries signed the climate change agreement in 2015, which aims to reduce global carbon emissions. On May 30, Trump met a key voice advocating for withdrawal, Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt. He was set to meet Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who supports remaining in the deal, said the report. A formal announcement is expected at some point this week — Trump tweeted: “I will be announcing my decision on the Paris Accord over the next few days. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Senior US officials familiar with his plans, said the move could change until Trump makes his decision public. The administration’s decision

Pro-Paris deal protest planned outside White House WASHINGTON: A Washington DCbased environmental group has called a last-minute protest on Thursday to oppose President Donald Trump’s expected withdrawal from the Paris climate deal. The protest, organized by 350 DC group, is set to follow Trump’s announcement of whether the US will remain a party to the 196-nation agreement aimed at curbing the effects of climate change, The Hill magazine reported. So far, about 470 Facebook users had committed to going to the protest and more than 1,000 were

comes after months of internal debate about what Trump, who campaigned on leaving the deal, would do once he took office. The White House was initially slated to make a final decision on the climate accord earlier this month, but delayed the decision until the last week’s G7 meeting in Sicily. At the summit, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters the climate debate was “controversial” and that the leaders of the other G7 nations — France, Japan, Canada, Britain and Italy — all urged Trump to remain a part of the 2015 agreement. ‘interested’ in attending. Trump is reportedly leaning toward a withdrawal from the deal, a move that would signal the President’s strongest effort yet to unravel former President Barack Obama’s environmental policies. “This decision sends a dangerous signal to the rest of the world that the US doesn’t honor its commitments,” a post on Facebook reads. “The Paris Agreement was signed by 196 countries and is the backbone of international action to tackle the greatest challenge facing our civilization: climate change.”

to Trump said he was listening with an open mind to the other leaders’ arguments about Paris, but had yet to decide whether to withdraw the US from the pact. Steve Bannon, Trump’s chief strategist and the former head of Breitbart, had pressed Trump to stick with his campaign promise and leave the deal. But Trump’s daughter Ivanka pressed aides to look at the full picture when considering what withdrawal could mean. Trump’s son-in-law and top aide, Jared Kushner, was said to be neutral on the deal.

Donald Trump baffles with his ‘Covfefe’ tweet IANS, NEW YORK

US President Donald Trump sent a lot of people, including reporters, scurrying for dictionaries when he posted an odd tweet that used the word “covfefe”. Trump wrote on Twitter in the early morning hours of May 31: “Despite the constant negative press covfefe” It left many of his 31 million followers on Twitter baffled, and slightly concerned. Most people think he meant to

write “press coverage,” and it was a typo/spelling error. The strange tweet remained up for at least an hour after it first appeared (presumably Trump’s press team was sleeping), reported Heavy.com. More than 73,000 people retweeted the tweet in just 120 minutes, and it earned its own hashtag. Jeff Posey @RattlesnakeShk posted: “...being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear #Covfefe shall not be infringed”.

ongressional investigators are probing whether Attorney General Jeff Sessions had an additional meeting with Russia’s Ambassador to the US during the 2016 presidential campaign, a media report said. Investigators are requesting additional information, including schedules from Sessions, a source

told CNN. They are focusing on whether such a meeting took place on April 27, 2016, at the Mayflower Hotel here, where then-candidate Donald Trump was delivering his first major foreign policy address. emonetization took a toll on the Indian economy with the Gross Domestic Product during the fourth quarter, ending March this year, falling sharply to 6.1 percent from 7 percent in the previous quarter while growth for the year as a whole also declined correspondingly. Industry reacted to the numbers saying these reflected the impact of demonetization. Data released by the official statistician on Wednesday showed that India’s GDP during the past fiscal grew at 7.1 percent, at a rate lower than the 8 percent achieved in 2015-16. “Real GDP at constant (201112) prices in Q4 of 2016-17 is estimated at Rs 32.28 trillion, as against Rs 30.42 trillion in Q4 of 2015-16, showing a growth rate of

BRIEFS Crashed Su-30’s pilots declared dead NEW DELHI: The IAF on Wednesday declared dead the two missing pilots of the Sukhoi-30 fighter jet that crashed in Assam last week. “Squadron Leader D. Pankaj and Flight Lieutenant S. Achudev, the pilots of the Su-30 aircraft sustained fatal injuries when the aircraft crashed,” the Indian Air Force said. The wreckage of the aircraft, that had gone missing soon after it took off on May 23 from IAF’s Tezpur base on a routine training mission, was located on May 26 after continuous search operation in the area.

India, Pak exchange fire along LoC JAMMU: A laborer was killed and two others, including a BSF trooper, were injured on Thursday in firing exchanges between Pakistani and Indian troops along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, an official said. “A laborer was killed and a driver injured from the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) in the firing. A Head Constable from Border Security Force (BSF) was also injured in the attack,” Defense Ministry spokesman Lt Col Manish Mehta told IANS. Indiscriminate firing was started by the Pakistan Army early on Thursday, to which the Indian troops retaliated. The Pakistani forces were firing using small arms, automatics and mortars, he said.

NEW DELHI: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday sought to discount the impact of demonetization on the Indian economy in the wake of the latest GDP figures and dismissed criticism of the government that it has only promoted jobless growth in the past three years. At a media conference here on the completion of the NDA’s three years in office, Jaitley asserted that there were several factors even before demonetization like global slowdown which cumulatively impacted the economy. Jaitley said the criticism of jobless growth was a propaganda by opponents who had nothing substantial to comment on the government’s performance.

Anant sought to downplay the impact of the note ban of November last year. “I would caution against reading a single number that comes out after an event as being reflective of consequences of the event,” he said in reply to questions on the impact the note ban decision of November last year had on the economy. In the March quarter, agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors grew at 5.2 percent. While mining and quarrying grew at 6.4 percent, manufacturing output increased at 5.3 percent, electricity, gas, water supply and other utility services went up at 6.1 percent and trade, hotels, transport and communication at 6.5 percent.

Saharanpur violence: Rahul blames Yogi govt IANS, SAHARANPUR (UTTAR PRADESH)

ongress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday held the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh responsible for caste violence in Saharanpur district and said the clashes escalated due to its “prejudiced action”. There is no town or city in Uttar Pradesh where crime is not soaring after the Bharatiya Janata Party government led by Yogi Adityanath has been sworn in, the Congress leader said. He also targeted the Center, saying both the state and central government have “miserably failed on

Modi inaugurates India’s longest bridge IANS, DHOLA (ASSAM)

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the strategically crucial and India’s longest 9.15-km river bridge connecting Assam and Arunachal Pradesh near the China border, and made a veiled attack on the previous Congress-led government for “delaying” its construction. Marking three years of the BJPled central government, Modi named the bridge — built over Brahmaputra tributary Lohit and linking Dhola in Assam to Sadiya in Arunachal — after music maestro late Bhupen Hazarika. “Our government has decided to

well-attended gathering here. The bridge, which can bear the weight of a 60-ton battle tank, will provide a road-link to various strategic locations in the region and make civil and military logistics movement easier for Arunachal’s Anini, some 100 km from the China border. The bridge constructed at a cost of Rs 9.50 billion will also reduce travel time for the military supplies to reach the border areas in Arunachal’s Dibang and Anjaw — a tedious journey that otherwise takes about two days. Modi said the bridge will lay a new beginning for economic revolution not only for the region but the entire country.

benefitted due to the situation in the Valley. On Friday, the Uttar Pradesh government had denied permission to Gandhi to visit the villages where caste conflicts since May 5 have left at least two dead and over two dozen others injured. Clashes between the Dalits and Rajputs erupted on May 5 in Shabbirpur village in Saharanpur after objections were raised over the playing of loud music in connection with the celebration of the birth anniversary of warrior king Maharana Pratap. On Saturday, Rahul Gandhi reached Saharanpur around 3.30 p.m. along with Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Raj Babbar.

Atal, Modi regimes corruption-free: BJP NEW DELHI: The BJP on Sunday raked up a “jeep scandal” of 1948 to claim that the party-led NDA regimes under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee were corruption-free. “Only two leaders Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi provided corruption-free governments in the country. Even, there was a jeep scandal under first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru,” BJP Spokesperson G.V.L. DEMOGRAPHIC DIVIDEND

becoming demographic burden? Despite the dampening effect of demonetization on the Indian economy, the country’s GDP growth rate has risen from 6.5 per cent in 2013-14 to almost seven per cent in 2016-17 AMIT KAPOOR, NEW DELHI

I

t has been an eventful three years for the Narendra Modi government. Back in 2014, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had inherited a system that was peppered with corruption scandals and where terms like policy paralysis, indecision and logjam were commonplace. However, such perceptions have changed and the country has come a long way since then. On the economic front, the country displayed some worrying trends in 2014 that seem to have been contained. The average CPI (combined) inflation that was 9.5 percent in 2013-14 had declined to 3.7 per cent by February 2017. This was mainly led by a drastic fall in food inflation from double digits to merely two per cent in February 2017. Other serious causes of concern when the Modi government took over were the widening fiscal and current account deficits. The fiscal deficit as a ratio of GDP was 4.5 per cent in 2013-14, while the current account deficit (CAD)

stood at 4.8 per cent of GDP. The former has fallen to 3.5 per cent for 2016-17 and the latter is just a tad above one per cent. Macro-economic stability has clearly improved in the last three years along with a rise in the country’s growth rate despite subdued global economic conditions. India’s GDP growth rate has risen

undertaken by the government during the period. To begin with, the Nehruvian-era Planning Commission was dismantled and replaced with the NITI Aayog, which has become the government’s go-to think-tank. To rein in inflation, which had become a constant irritant, the Monetary Policy Committee was set up to

The country’s competitiveness also witnessed a sharp jump as evidenced by the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) prepared by the World Economic Forum. Among 138 nations, India’s GCI rankings improved from 60 to 39 in the last three years. On the institutional front, there were numerous bold initiatives

independently decide interest rates for the economy to achieve pre-defined inflation targets. The government has also been making positive institutional changes to achieve its aim of improving the country’s ease of doing business. India’s ranking has not considerably improved, but it has made significant gains on various fronts.

BJP’s Dalit outreach under threat The shutdown of slaughterhouses on the grounds that many of them were unlicensed was seen as a step by BJP specifically aimed at the Muslim community, which is associated with the Rs 150bn industry AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

T

here is a long way to go before Uttar Pradesh can become Uttam Pradesh, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised after his party’s massive victory in the assembly elections. The caste violence in Saharanpur and the gang rape and murder on a highway near Bulandshahr have followed the depredations of the love jehad and anti-Romeo squads and the Allahabad High Court’s intervention in favor of the Muslim meat traders when it told Yogi Adityanath’s government to issue licences to the abattoirs which it had summarily closed down. The government’s crackdown on the slaughterhouses on the grounds that many of them were unlicensed was seen as a step specifically aimed at the Muslim community which has been traditionally associated

with the Rs 150 billion industry. The high court, however, said that a “check on unlawful activity should be simultaneous with facilitating the carrying of lawful activity, particularly that relating to food,

food habits and vending thereof that is undisputedly connected with the right to life and livelihood”.

India-Russia annual bilateral summit

India, Spain commit cooperation in fight against terrorism

ST PETERSBURG: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin headed the 18th India-Russia annual bilateral summit that got underway here on Thursday. Trade and economic reforms are likely to be the areas of focus during the discussions. Despite efforts to take bilateral trade to $10 billion, the figure has been hovering around $7 billion for various reasons. After the talks, Modi and Putin will be addressing a CEOs’ forum. On Friday, Modi will for the first time attend the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, a business event. The Prime Minister arrived here on Wednesday evening on the third leg of his four-nation European tour. From here he will go to France on the fourth and final leg of his tour and meet newly-elected French President Emmanuel Macron for the first time. Before going to Russia, Modi visited Germany and Spain.

MADRID: India and Spain on Wednesday committed to cooperate in the fight against terrorism calling it the gravest threat to international peace and stability even as the two sides expressed the need to restart negotiations for an EU-India Broadbased Trade and Investment Agreement (BITA). “Both India and Spain have faced terrorism,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said while addressing the media ahead of talks with his Spanish counterpart Mariano Rajoy at La Moncloa, the official residence of the Spanish Prime Minister. “Terrorism and extremism pose the biggest challenge to the world

today,” Modi said. “Strengthening cooperation between us in the fight against terrorism is a key element of our bilateral agenda.” A joint statement issued following the meeting between the two leaders said both “recognized that terrorism poses the gravest threat to international peace and stability and expressed their strong commitment to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations”. Modi arrived here from Germany on Tuesday. This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Spain in nearly 30 years since Rajiv Gandhi paid a trip in 1988.

has again indicated this year that it has not changed its stand. According to the statement, Modi and Merkel also reaffirmed the urgent need for comprehensive reform of the UN Security Council, “including its expansion in both permanent and non-permanent categories of membership, to make it more effective, efficient

and responsive to the existing challenges to international peace and security and representative of the contemporary geo-political realities”. “Both countries reiterated their full support to each other’s candidatures for a permanent seat in a reformed and expanded UN Security Council,” it said.

ermany on Tuesday reaffirmed its support for India’s membership in international export control regimes, including the Nuclear Suppliers Group, following the fourth biannual Inter-Governmental Consultations jointly headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel here. “Both leaders expressed their commitment to strengthen global non-proliferation efforts,” a joint statement issued following the talks said.

SHORT TAKES

‘Britain heading for hung Parliament’ LONDON: Britain could be on course for a hung Parliament in nine days time, according to a new projection that suggested the Conservatives could fall 16 seats short of an overall majority. The seat-by-seat prediction by market research company YouGov for The Times daily suggested that the Conservatives were on course to win 310 seats in the election —

short of an absolute majority of 326 seats needed to form a government. Ed Miliband, the former Labor leader, who suffered a disastrous result in the 2015 election despite predictions of a hung Parliament, replied to the research on Twitter, saying: “The pollsters have been off my Christmas card since 2015 #justsaying”.

Cyclone Mora claims 7 lives in Bangladesh DHAKA: Cyclone Mora left at least seven people dead and damaged nearly 60,000 houses, displacing around 56,000 families when it hit Bangladesh a day ago, officials said on Wednesday. Four people were killed and 60 were injured on Tuesday in the Cox Bazar district, while two others were killed in Rangamati and one in Bhola district, Efe news quoted Bangladesh’s Disaster Management Department spokesperson

Naznin Shamina as saying. According to Shamina, the cyclone caused substantial damage to private property with at least 19,768 houses seriously damaged and 38,112 partially, particularly in Cox Bazar and Chittagong districts. Two million people were evacuated before the cyclone made landfall, out of which 500,000 were moved to 3,800 cyclone shelters. Around 33,000 Rohingya refugees were among the worst affected.

“Germany welcomed India’s accession to the Missile Technology Control Regime,” it said. “Germany also welcomed India’s intensified engagement with the other export control regimes — the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), Australia Group and the Wassenaar Arrangement — and expressed its support for India’s early accession to these regimes.” At the NSG plenary in Seoul in June last year, China had blocked India’s membership bid on the ground that for a country to a part of the 48-nation bloc, it has to be a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Haqqani network behind Kabul bombing: Afghan intelligence IANS, KABUL

T

he Afghan National Directorate of Security (NDS), the primary intelligence agency in Afghanistan, has blamed the Taliban-linked Haqqani network for the deadly truck bombing in Kabul which killed 90 people. Sediq Sediqqi, spokesman for the Interior Ministry, tweeted this on Thursday morning, reports Xinhua news agency. The Haqqani network of militants, mainly operating in eastern provinces and capital Kabul, has been responsible for many high-profile attacks on security forces. At least 90 people were killed and over 460 injured, many critically, when a truck packed with explosives blew up during morning rush hour in the Afghan capital’s diplomatic zone on Wednesday. who was at the site, said the explosion was so powerful that it caused a 15-meter crater and shattered windowpanes in a number of buildings, including some embassies. The powerful blast, heard in several parts of Kabul, happened amid the holy month of Ramadan when work starts an hour late.

Citing an old American saying that “managers do things right. Leaders do the right thing”, Islam said: “That should be true in all fields — business, politics, religion, health care, and yes — even nonprofits.” “Leaders create other leaders and opportunity creators. They have a multiplier effect by uniting others in a common cause,” he said. “They do this by establishing a clear vision and building acceptance and commitment to it; exuding pos-

ith a few players emerging from a disappointing Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign and injuries, defending champions India, who have unmatched pedigree on paper, are all set to defend their title in the ICC Champions Trophy to be held in England and Wales from June 1-18. After winning two warm-up games against New Zealand and Bangladesh, the Indian team, who have retained several players from the victorious 2013 side, is high on confidence and will be looking to continue their form throughout the tournament. They, however, faced off in the shortest version of the game during last year’s ICC World T20 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. India won both matches.

Tiff between Kumble and Kohli? MUMBAI: As Indian team is ready to fire from all its cylinders to defend the Champions Trophy, a lot of discontent is reported in the dressing room with the captain expressing lack of confidence in the head coach. Speculations were rife since the BCCI chose not to extend the tenure of Anil Kumble as the head coach and had advertised the position. It is reported that the decision to advertise the position was made was made following feedback from Virat Kohli about Kumble's coaching method, which he is said to have described as "intimidating", espncricinfo reported. The players' concerns are thought to centre mainly around Kumble's man-management skills. Kumble has been conducting himself like a "headmaster" at a school.

India will play their next two matches at The Oval, against the Sri Lankans on June 8 and then South Africa on June 11. Group A comprises New Zealand, Australia, England and Bangladesh. An official said that due to this approach, some players had injuries that were not strictly cricket related. Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody could be the beneficiary of the on-going tussle between the skipper and the coach. A senior BCCI official said that while not many names had come in for the coach’s post, former Sri Lanka coach Moody could be a possible successor.

With the likes of Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes in their ranks, England will have a slight edge over the other teams, at least on paper. Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and James Pattinson, are expected to top Group A. So it could be an interesting battle in the semi-finals with India. England, Australia and South Africa. South Africa, who are often labelled as chokers due to their poor record in ICC events, will also be looking for a fresh start. With AB de Villiers, Quinton de

Kock, Hashim Amla in the side, one cannot rule them out from reaching the knock-out stages. Pakistan and Sri Lanka also have an outside chance of reaching the knockout stage. One may call it a mini World Cup, but there will be nothing miniature about the thrilling matches which will be played during the 16-day tournament.

Shami key to India’s CT prospects: Pathan IANS, DELHI

A

s the high-octane ICC Champions Trophy clash against Pakistan draws closer, veteran India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has picked India as the favorites besides counting pacer Mohammed Shami as the key to the prospects of the men-in-blue in the June 1-18 tournament in England and Wales. Irfan, who was part of the victorious India side which lifted the Champions Trophy in 2013, said the mantra of success in English conditions is to hit the seam well, which he felt the in-form Indian pacers, led by Mohammed Shami, are capable of. “What’s important in England is to hit the seam well. If you can keep bowling in the right areas and hit the seam, I think that’s the best way to go for the bowlers,” the 32year-old told IANS.

“With the kind of form our frontline pacers -- Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav -- are in at the moment, I am sure India can do really well in the Champions Trophy. With the amount of experience they have in

the home season and the Indian Premier League (IPL), I think they are up for the challenge in England.” Irfan, who was India’s frontline pacer with his swing bowling in the 2004 tour of Pakistan, said he was impressed by the young duo of

Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah in One-day Internationals besides hailing Shami for having one of the best seam positions in world cricket. “I am really impressed with Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah’s bowling in international cricket, especially in one-dayers... as well as, for that matter, Shami and Umesh.” “Shami has been the bowler who can deliver with both the old and the new ball. He has got the most beautiful seam position I have ever seen in international cricket. He will be key to India’s success in the Champions Trophy,” he said. Asked if head-to-head records count during high-tension encounters, such as those against Pakistan, the Baroda all-rounder said: “Such advantages or disadvantages get an edge only to a certain extent. But it all boils down to how you tackle the situation during the match.”

‘Dangal’ creates history

Aamir Khan-starrer Dangal surpassed the Rs 1,000 crore-mark of box office collections in China, becoming the first Indian film to achieve such feat GAURAV SHARMA, BEIJING

ollywood star Aamir Khan’s Dangal surpassed the Rs 1,000 crore-mark of box office collections in China, becoming the first Indian film to achieve the feat, according to a popular Chinese ticketing website. This is rare as China has a special quota for foreign films where the number of Indian films is too small. Yet, Dangal has joined the elite club of some 30 films that have raked up over Rs 1,000 crore. As per data on ticketing platform Maoyan, the movie raked in 1.067 billion RMB. Among other foreign films, The Mermaid is the highest-grossing movie (over 3 million RMB) in China, followed by likes of Monster

writing about the phenomenal success of the movie as it has struck a chord with the Chinese, a maledominated society. “It reminds me of my father. He wanted a son. He forced me to be like a son,” a Chinese government official told IANS in a rare personal interaction. “I felt

as if I never was a girl.” The movie was released on May 5 across around 7,000 screens in China. In an interview to IANS, Aamir spoke about how overwhelmed he is with the response to the sports drama. “While we were hoping that Dangal connects with the people of China, not in our wildest dreams we thought that this is the kind of connect we would have. It was unprecedented. We are pleasantly surprised,” said Aamir Khan. According to him, the reason it has become so huge is that the Chinese connected on an emotional level with the story, the characters and the moments. “I have been reading their reactions on social media. They have been saying things like how the movie moved them and how the characters inspired them so much.

Priyanka meets Modi in Berlin IANS, BERLIN

ctress Priyanka Chopra met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in between his packed schedule in Berlin, terming it “such a lovely coincidence”. “Thank you for taking the time to meet me this morning Narendra Modi sir. Such a lovely coincidence to be in Berlin at the same time,” Priyanka, who has been making India proud in Hollywood, tweeted. She even shared a glimpse from her meeting with Modi on Twitter as well as Instagram. PC shuts trolls with ‘leggy’ photograph BERLIN: After she was trolled for wearing a short dress and flaunting her legs during her meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, actress Priyanka Chopra shut all the trollers with just a “legs for days” photograph of herself along with her mother Madhu Chopra. Priyanka drew flak on social media for sporting a short dress and flaunting her legs in front of Modi. Priyanka then shared a photograph of herself with her mother night on Instagram. In the photograph, the Bajirao Mastani star is seen sporting a dress with a long

slit in the front and flaunting her towering legs. Madhu is seen donning black top and a short skirt. “Legs for days... It’s the genes with Madhu Chopra nights out in Berlin... Being ‘Baywatch’,” Priyanka captioned the image.

‘Mirror Game: Ab Khel Shuru’: Surprisingly engaging

W

ith a weird name like Mirror Game: Ab Khel Shuru, one’s expectations from this film are rather very low. As the film initially plunges into a tackily projected “perfect murder” thriller with a professor of psychology, his disgruntled, “divorce-seeking” wife and an obliging student, some viewers may feel they have seen it all before. But director Vijit Sharma has such a unique approach to the familiar material that the cliches are irrelevant and the film takes you by surprise. Narrated in a non-linear manner, the story set in a small town in the

Film: “Mirror Game: Ab Khel Shuru”; Director: Vijit Sharma; Cast: Parvin Dabas, Dhruv Bali, Sneha Ramchander, Pooja Batra, Omi Vaidya and Shanti Akkineni; Rating: *** US is told in a formulaic manner, solely from Professor Jai Verma’s point of view. It begins on a dramatic note. He attempts to take away his life and thence gets into the last ten days revealing as to what drives him to do so. This initial start, though unwarranted, helps build the character and then further

delves into solving the mystery. The plot unravels at a slow pace and the first few scenes seem rather

tacky, when Jai ropes in his everobliging student Ronnie to eliminate his wife Tanya Verma. The plot gets murky with Ronnie kidnapping Tanya and double-crossing Jai. While the police are investigating the case, Jai is thrown into a web of his own psychological and emotional challenges. The writing is simple and unpretentious and that’s what works for this complex narrative. It makes the screenplay extremely effective and the characters along with the situation convincing. On the performance front; Parvin Dabas as the schizophrenic Jai Verma, Dhruv Bali as Ronnie, Shanti Akkineni as Tanya Verma,

Sneha Ramchander as Detective Shenoy and Pooja Batra as Jai Verma’s friend and police psychologist Shonali, deliver nothing outstanding as actors and are thus perfunctory. Mounted with moderate production values, the production designs, which include the onlocation shoots are accurate. Cinematographer Joshua Echevarria’s camera work is steady and his frames are realistic. The background score by Kasturi Nath Singh and Vishal Singh elevate the viewing experience. The fine layering of the sound and visuals by Shakti Hasija and Abhishek Seth is also worth a mention.

Being an animal lover herself, she spent the afternoon going through the centre and understanding the work that goes on there. Not just limiting her attention to dogs and cats, she also spent time feeding the cows, buffaloes, donkeys and horses.“I request people to firstly not buy animals but adopt them from places like this one. Also, donation is very simple, all you have to do is log on to their website, select an animal you want to sponsor and track their progress online,” Richa said.

During an event with actor Akshay Kumar on May 21, Parineeti shared her childhood struggles saying that her family was poor and could not afford a car for her to go to the school. Thus, she used to ride a cycle to school every day and became a victim of eve-teasing. However, Parineeti’s statement was slammed on social media by a few of her “schoolmates” who claimed that the actress was “lying”.

Anushka promotes ‘Swachh Bharat’

Second suspect jailed for murder of NJ man

Trupal Patel

BY A STAFF WRITER RICK, NJ -- A second suspect has been arrested and was ordered held without bail on May 26 for the murder of Brick Township, New Jersey, resident Trupal Patel. The body of the 29-year-old Indian American was found on February. 22 in Shark River Park, New Jersey. Patel was born in Nadiad, India, and grew up in Brick, New Jersey. He is survived by his parents Rita and Bharatkumar Patel, and his brother Krut. Nine months before his death, Patel was arrested in concert with two others for possession of over four pounds of marijuana and an ounce of psilocybin mushrooms, an illegal hallucinogenic drug. The police also found $61,000 in cash. Three days after Patel’s body was found, the police arrested Joseph Villani, 20, who is believed to be a buyer of the marijuana Patel sold. Raquel Garajua, Villani’s girlfriend, was arrested last week, and made her first court appearance on May 26. An assistant prosecutor read out text messages in court in which Garajua told Villani to “take your time bleaching everything” and to “take that bag of stuff out because I touched his phone. “We will throw that stuff in the ocean,” Garajau wrote to Villani in a text message. Patel’s 2003 Jaguar was found outside Villani’s home. In one text message, Garajau advised her boyfriend to “move that car.” In a statement to the police after his arrest, Villani confessed to the murder and said that he acted alone. He said that Garajau played no part in the murder. “OK, I did it, I did it. Raquel had nothing to do with it. I told her I done it, but she had nothing to do with it. I want her out. Look, I told you guys what I did,” said Villani, in the statement which was read in court during Garajau’s appearance. But a grand jury found that Garajau may have had a role in the murder. The couple are both charged with murder, felony murder, armed robbery, disturbing or desecrating human remains, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of an assault rifle, hindering apprehension of oneself, hindering apprehension of another, tampering with a witness, and tampering with evidence. Garaju’s attorney noted that his client is on the dean’s list at her community college.

Air Force ex-mechanic faces 35-year jail term

Tairod Pugh

BY A STAFF WRITER EWYORK, NY- A onetime Air Force serviceman turned ISIS supporter is set to be sentenced to prison. Tairod Pugh, 48, tried to travel to Syria to join with ISIS fighters but he was stopped in Istanbul and sent back to the US where he was arrested by the FBI in March 2015. Pugh was convicted this past March after claiming his innocence. Prosecutors pointed out his writings, including one letter to his wife voicing support for ISIS and telling her he was trying to become a martyr. Pugh had served in the Air Force as a mechanic more than 20 years ago. But officials said he became increasingly radical after the 9/11 attacks, culminating with his attempts to travel overseas in 2015. Pugh is one of dozens of suspects arrested for trying to travel overseas. The FBI has said it has investigations ongoing in all 50 states into suspected extremists.

thanked all Grand sponsors like Barrington Bank and Air India for their support to the temple. The Indian community in Chicago watched the drama with rapt attention, admiring Sardar Patel’s patriotism and devotion during the freedom struggle that some said will remain etched in their memories. All the actors did a splendid job with their histrionic skills, especially Shanak Vyas (Sardar Patel), Dr. Vikram Panchal, Dr. Rekha Joshi, Tapan Jani, Parth Rawal, Pranay Mehta, Shivani Bhagat, and Jay Mehta who portrayed Mahatma Gandhi,

Jawaharlal Nehru, Sarojini Naidu, Maulana Azad and Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The drama with an excellent team of artistes, the producer, the director, the scriptwriter and the technical staff is being performed for the last two years. While it took 30 artistes to perform the drama in India, the job was done by just nine actors in Chicago. At the end of the show, Air India Midwest Manager Nukul Chand conducted the raffle draw for a ‘Round Trip free ticket to India’ in which Kirtida Shah emerged the winner.

LIVE, LOVE, CELEBRATE His authorized biography on Dalai Lama has been published in 24 languages around the world. He has written and reported on every significant South Asian development since the 80’s and has also made a documentary highlighting Gujarati poet Narsinh Mehta. Yet despite his many contributions, the South Asian diaspora knows little about Naperville based writer and artist Mayank Chhaya Prolific writer, author, documentary filmmaker and artist Mayank Chhaya is a man of many talents. He has been an eminent journalist reporting and commenting on global affairs for more than three decades now. He has variously written on South Asian issues and has been an expert on SinoTibetan affairs. The writer who is based in Chicago now, is known for his successful book – Man, Monk and Mystic, which not only has won critical acclaim but is also translated in 24 languages around the world, including in America. He also wrote a biography on Sam Pitroda, the Chicago based entrepreneur known for his contribution to telecom industry in India. The book titled, Sam Pitroda –A Biography climbed the bestseller charts when it was published back in 1992. Chhaya has also just finished a documentary titled Gandhi’s Song, which is ready for international distribution. When Chhaya is not writing or researching (he is currently working on three more books, a TV show and a feature film!) he also dabbles into art. A San Francisco based fashion label has incorporated his paintings to create a range of products. Clearly Chhaya has his plate full with projects and is brimming with newer ideas. CELEBRATING HIS GUJARATI ROOTS Amongst his recent works, the documentary titled Gandhi’s Song is of extreme importance because Chhaya picked up the subject to celebrate the immense contribution of the 15th century great poet philosopher Narsinh Mehta. While we all may have heard of the song chosen by Gandhiji, Vaishnav Jan To, which became a defining ballad

Hidden heroes: MAYANK CHHAYA Gujarati poet-philosopher Narsinh Mehta is regarded as a poet laureate of my home state of Gujarat. We grew up reading listening to his songs and ballads. ‘Gandhi’s Song’ is a feature-length documentary about the life and times of Mehta.” during India’s struggle for freedom. Sadly, hardly anyone knows about the poet who wrote that song. Chhaya’s documentary aims to bring the laurels to the poet whose verses continue to live. Talking about his documentary, Chhaya says, “This was 20-year-long passion of my life. The great Gujarati poet-philosopher Narsinh Mehta (1414-1480) is regarded as a poet laureate of my home state of Gujarat. ‘Gandhi’s Song’ is a featurelength documentary about the life and times of Mehta.”

‘Vaishnav Jan To’. Over four centuries after he wrote it, the song became Mohandas Gandhi’s lifelong moral compass and directly influenced India’s great freedom campaign against the British imperial rule.” “By most scholarly accounts, Gandhi first incorporated the song in his daily spiritual routine sometime in 1907. In a rare case of the Bhakti movement poets, Mehta, an obsessive lifelong Krishna devotee, excelled both at “Saguna” and Nirguna” forms of poetry. Widely believed

he says, “I was born in Ahmedabad and for as long as I remember I wanted to be a journalist in order to tell stories. Although I went to a journalism school in Mumbai after my bachelor in science from Ahmedabad I was turned off by the idea of learning reporting sitting in a class. I promptly failed the course and joined the Free Press Journal newspaper in 1982. That is where I cut my teeth.” He adds, “Over the last three and half decades I have worked and reported for a variety of media outlets from Mumbai, New Delhi, Islamabad, Lahore, Colombo, San Francisco, New York and Chicago. India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka were part of my professional domain. In the decades of the 1980s and 1990s I reported extensively on all major stories emanating from India, including the insurgencies in Kashmir and Punjab from their inception.”

INDIANS IN CHICAGO

Chhaya adds, “Although he wrote hundreds of songs, verses and ballads, he remains forever defined by a single song

to be unlettered, his language was of a very order and set in a way that whatever he wrote could be sung. What is remarkable about ‘Vaishnav Jan’, something that Gandhi understood and imbibed, is that the song is a remarkably secular and non-denominational benchmark for righteous human conduct.” He further adds, “‘Gandhi’s Song’ is a 74-minute documentary that I wrote, directed, filmed and edited.”

ROAD TO AMERICA Chhaya had an illustrious career back in India but he chose to come to the US to take up newer challenges. He first came to the San Francisco Bay Area; in 1998 edit a local newspaper. He then moved to New York and eventually to Chicago. Talking about his career spanning decades,

Chhaya has been in the windy city for 12 years. He says this has been the longest he has lived in a place ever since he left Ahmedabad back in 1981. Talking about the diaspora in Chicago and its achievements over the years, Chhaya says, “Indians have a greatly vibrant presence in Chicago. The Indian Diaspora is an important cultural, economic and, to some extent, political force. Indian Americans in Chicago pursue a diverse set of professional careers and interests and make a significant contribution to life in America. It is heartening to know that many members of the community are getting involved in public affairs at various levels starting from village and town. It is crucial that the community does that to ensure that its voice is heard and cultural checks and balances stay in place.” KNOWING DALAI LAMA Talking about his illustrious book on Dalai Lama, Chhaya says, “During my research, I conducted several hours of personal interviews with the Dalai Lama in his home at McLeod Ganj in Himachal Pradesh, India. Over the years I have met him several times both in India and here in America.” He adds, “Tibet and Dalai Lama were my childhood fascinations. A book about both seemed like a necessary endeavor. It took shape in 1997 when I was doing a cover story on Tibetan refugees in India and as part of that had an interview with the Dalai Lama. It is such an obvious story to tell—a single stateless monk taking on the might of a powerful ancient civilization that is now a global economic powerhouse. I pitched the book to the Dalai Lama during CONTINUE ON PG. 29

Protein linked to chronic heart failure identified TOKYO: Researchers in Japan have found a receptor protein on the surface of heart cells that promotes chronic heart failure. The findings, published in The Journal of Experimental Medicine, suggests that inhibiting this protein could help treat a disease that affects more than 20 million people worldwide. Chronic heart failure is caused by a

variety of conditions that damage the heart, including coronary heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. Although the heart initially tries to compensate for this damage and maintain its function by, for example, growing larger, cardiac function gradually declines until the heart is no longer able to pump enough blood and oxygen around the body.

dministering a single dose of 100-year-old drug suramin — originally developed to treat African sleeping sickness — can improve symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children, a study said. During the study, four boys who received the suramin infusion displayed Autism is improvement in language and social caused by behavior, restrictmetabolic ed or repetitive dysfunction or behavior and coping skills. impaired The most changed behaviors communication researchers said. were social communi“During the time cation and play, speech and the children were on language, calm and focus, repetisuramin, benefit from all their tive behavior and coping skills, the usual therapies and enrichment

programs increased dramatically,” said lead author Robert K. Naviaux, Professor at the University of California San Diego. Importantly, suramin caused sig-

nificant improvements in language and social interaction in a 14-yearold boy who had not spoken a complete sentence in 12 years. “We had four non-verbal children in the study, two six-year-olds and two 14-year-olds. The six-year-old and the 14-year-old who received suramin said the first sentences of their lives about one week after the single suramin infusion. This did not happen in any of the children given the placebo,” Naviaux added. The findings were reported in the Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology. According to Naviaux, autism is caused by metabolic dysfunction or impaired communication between cells in the brain, gut and immune system, resulting from abnormal persistence of the cell danger response (CDR) — a natural and universal cellular reaction to injury or stress.

A team of researchers led by Mikito Takefuji from Nagoya University School of Medicine discovered that a signalling protein called corticotropin releasing hormone receptor 2 (Crhr2) is expressed on the surface of heart muscle cells, or cardiomyocytes, and that Crhr2 levels increase in mice suffering from heart failure. Crhr2 is a G protein-coupled receptor whose ability to alter cardiomyocyte function is activated by a protein called urocortin 2 (Ucn2). "Results suggest constitutive Crhr2 activation causes cardiac dysfunction and Crhr2 blockade could be a promising therapeutic strategy for patients with chronic heart failure," Takefuji said.

Gene causing female incontinence found LONDON: Raising hopes for a new effective treatment for women experiencing urine leakage, researchers have found that a gene involved in the ability of the bladder to contract may be linked to female urinary incontinence. Urinary incontinence in women is common, with almost 50 per cent of adult women experiencing leakage at least occasionally. “(At least) 25 per cent of adult women will experience incontinence severe enough to impact on their quality of life,” said Rufus Cartwright, a visiting researcher at Imperial College, London. “Finding a genetic cause and a potential treatment route is, therefore, a priority,” Cartwright added. The researchers undertook a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in under 9,000 women from three groups in Finland and Britain.
