Obama trip a ‘hugs’ success Modi-Obama hugs contributed to the success of President Barack Obama’s visit to India IANS, WASHINGTON
A
leading Indian-American attorney has suggested that Modi-Obama hugs contributed to the success of President Barack Obama’s visit to India to be the chief guest at India’s Republic Day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had broken protocol to greet Obama at the New Delhi airport with a hug, noted New York based Ravi Batra, who is Chair of the National Advisory Council of South Asian Affairs, in an interview with an ethnic newspaper. “Obama’s trust in India’s durable commitment to the rule of law, honest desire to honor the spirit of the agreements and national aspirations that embrace peace and abhor war” measured the success of Obama’s India trip, he told the South Asian Times. Modi’s coming to power with a big mandate and his taking “taking exceptional risks” also helped, he said. “Modi is mandate-rich. But that

Why chain India to the past with n-energy? WASHINGTON: Noting that the US has not set up a new nuclear installation for decades, an Indian-American academic has accused President Barack Obama of hypocrisy in pushing India on a technology the US won’t even touch. “Why chain India to the past and risk another Chernobyl, Fukushima, or Bhopal when it could be leapfrogging into the future?” asked Vivek Wadhwa, Director of Research, CERC, Pratt School of Engineering, Duke Universi-

istan and its military for five decades has helped to reduce tension in the subcontinent and remain a nation. “It is now a fact that America and India are global partners,” he said. Asked what else India can look forward to from warmer relations with US, Batra said “America’s ‘special relationship’ with Great Britain will in time be judged against America’s ‘special relationship’ with India.” “India will be the secret ingredient to a strong and durable American Dream for all,” he said adding, “As an Indian-American, it doesn’t get any better.” Asked if he feared that the Republicans may try to undo what Obama has wrought in India-US relations, Batra noted that Republicans too had “worked hard and took political risks to get where we were” before the Devyani Khobragade affair. “All Indians and all Americans have a legitimate right to claim ownership of this ObamaModi Hugs-success,” he said.

The rate at which solar and other clean technologies are progressing, by the time the first nuclear plant is operational in India, it will be far more expensive than the alternatives, he said. “The White House is claiming victory for a breakthrough in the impasse with India over nuclear energy,” Wadhwa wrote suggesting “This is hardly a victory for the United States or for India.”
White House proposal by US President Barack Obama to increase spending for NASA has been welcomed by the US space agency that will boost its chances to reach Mars and other deep space missions. The $18.5 billion budget request for the fiscal year 2016 a $500 million boost over the 2015 budget - includes funding for developing a mission to Jupiter’s moon Europa, and the agency’s asteroid redirect mission (ARM), NASA chief Charles Bolden said during an address at Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. “NASA is firmly on a journey to Mars. Make no mistake, this journey will help guide and define our generation,” Bolden said. The Orion spacecraft programme — designed to bring humans to deep-space destinations like Mars — and Space Launch System (SLS) mega-rocket are funded under the budget request, Space.com reported. Orion is expected to receive about $1.1 billion for 2016, with the SLS receiving about $1.35 billion. If the budget request are finalized, NASA could end the longrunning and aging Opportunity rover’s mission on Mars next year.

Other programmes funded in the budget includes the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope the successor to Hubble. HOW THE N-DEAL WAS DONE The Indian government had prioritized the nuclear issue and PM Narendra Modi indicated that this matter would receive the highest political attention during the Obama’s visit C UDAY BHASKAR, NEW DELHI
T
he much awaited and long-delayed modusvivendi between India and the US over the finalization of the civilian nuclear cooperation agreement that began in July 2005 has finally been achieved on January 25 on the first day of US President Barack Obama’s visit to India. The major obstacles were the nature of the liability clauses in the event of any nuclear accident or incident which India wanted and the nuclear-reactor inspection rights that the US had sought. India had introduced a nuclear liability law in 2010 — as it happens, at the behest of the BJP which was then in the opposition — that
Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the US President Barack Obama, during the Joint Press Interaction, in New Delhi.
placed the liability on the supplier in the event of a nuclear accident. This is at variance with the global norm which places the liability in such exigencies on the operator. However, this stipulation was not acceptable to the US. The US, in turn, sought to impose 'flag rights in perpetuity', meaning that in the event India
acquired a US nuclear reactor, the US would retain the right in perpetuity to inspect any material or equipment that was being used in or associated with the said reactor. India saw this as an infringement of its nuclear sovereignty and resisted such a clause. Consequently, the much anticipated civilian nuclear cooperation
commerce between the US and India remained a non-starter and the issue continued to fester from late 2008 when the (George W.) Bush administration had gone the extra mile to tweak its domestic legislation to accord India an exceptional status in the global nuclear domain. The BJP-led NDA government,
which assumed office in May 2014, had prioritized the nuclear issue and Prime Minister Narendra Modi indicated that this matter would receive the highest political attention when he visited the US in September 2014 for his first meeting with President Obama. The dramatic "breakthrough" — as Obama himself described it — announced is to be welcomed and is indicative of the joint political resolve that the Modi-Obama combine has been able to demonstrate to redress a long festering issue that has prevented the India-US bilateral relationship from realizing the potential benefits embedded in the radical breakthrough of July 2005 that had ended India's nuclear isolation in the global comity. The impact of this Delhi breakthrough on the nuclear issue will reenergize and reset the moribund India-US bilateral relationship and this will in all likelihood have a beneficial ripple effect on all the other issues that are awaiting traction during the current Obama visit. Hopefully, India will be able to overcome some of its earlier inhibitions regarding the foundational agreements as regards the defence and military sector and this, in turn, will allow Delhi to begin actively reviewing the high technology possibilities that were first mooted in July 2005 and then signed October 2008. This has been a long wait but the Modi-Obama ‘chai pe charcha’ (conversation over tea) has cleared the logjam. The eagle and the elephant may still tango!
Delhi elections: Is BJP nervous? AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
E
ven though the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to pip the Aam Admi Party (AAP) at the post in the Delhi assembly elections, doubts remain as to how much ahead it will be of its rival. In the last election, too, the BJP won more seats than the AAP although it fell short of the halfway mark in the 70-member legislature. In the forthcoming contest, therefore, the BJP's first wish will be to win at least 35 seats although its combative president, Amit Shah, is predicting success in two-thirds of the seats. It is this expectation of a party led by an "anarchist", as Narendra Modi told an election rally, giving the BJP a run for its money which
has induced the latter to roll out the big guns for the contest. Apart from seven or eight cabinet ministers, a large number of MPs have been drafted by the party to campaign during the runup to D-day, which is Feb 7. Besides, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the BJP's friend, philosopher and guide, has decided to depute its workers for field work. To the uninitiated, all this effort might seem like the wielding of a sledge-hammer to swat a fly. After all, the BJP is led by unarguably the most popular prime minister the country has seen since the first three years of Rajiv Gandhi's tenure before the Bofors howitzer scandal started his downfall. In contrast, the AAP, though it came second in the last election

with 28 seats against the BJP's 32, is still a novice in the political field with a muddled ideology and an organizational base comprising mostly enthusiastic amateurs. It has also experienced desertions from its ranks of high-profile members like Kiran Bedi, who is now the BJP's chief ministerial candidate, and the ebullient Shazia Ilmi. Moreover, the AAP,
and especially its voluble leader, Arvind Kejriwal, are yet to get over the opprobrium and ridicule it suffered for having "run away" after 49 days in office, which made Modi call him AK-49. Notwithstanding these handicaps, the AAP's seeming advantage is that it enjoys the backing of the urban poor and the minorities. If the former, com-
prising the lower middle class and those living in slums or jhuggijhopri clusters are impressed by Kejriwal's anti-establishment rhetoric, which substantiates their own experience of police high-handedness and bureaucratic indifference, the minorities have been unnerved by the communal agenda of the Hindutva fundamentalists.

Won’t forgive, says Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as the world condemns execution IANS, TOKYO
T
he Islamic State (IS) militants claimed in a video to have executed a second Japanese hostage, according to media reports this week. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe condemned the purported killing as “a despicable terrorist act” and vowed to “never forgive” the radical group. The IS claimed in a one-minute video clip to have beheaded freelance journalist and film-maker Kenji Goto, 47, after his compatriot Haruna Yukawa was killed only a few days back. Goto was known to have gone to Syria in October to secure Yukawa’s release. After the video was posted online, Abe told reporters that he

was utterly “outraged by the despicable terrorist act”, adding that he would never yield to terrorists. “I am infuriated by these inhumane and despicable acts of terrorism, and resolutely condemn these impermissible and outrageous acts. I will never forgive these terrorists. I will work with the international community to hold them responsible for their deplorable acts,” he said in a statement posted on Japan’s foreign ministry website. Prime Minister Abe said Japan will never give in to terrorism. “We will further expand our humanitarian assistance in the Middle East in areas such as food and medical care. Japan will steadfastly fulfill its responsibility in the international community combating terrorism,” he said.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan, under international pressure to curb terrorism and terrorist activities based on its territory, will conduct the trial of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, the alleged mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, on day-to-day basis, local media reported this week. The Islamabad High Court, whose earlier order for conditional release of Lakhvi raised the hackles of India, said that the hearing in the trial would be held on daily basis, the Dawn reported. The court’s ruling came on a request from prosecutor Chaudhry Azhar, who said: “This case is crucial. The world’s eyes are on this case. Therefore, it should be heard daily by IHC.” The hearing in the case will commence Friday. The trial, being conducted by Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), has seen much flip-flop in recent months. Last year Dec 29, the Islamabad High Court ordered conditional release of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, drawing strong protests from India, which summoned the Pakistani envoy to “convey concern” over the development. India has relentlessly sought Lakhvi since the November 2008 attacks killed 166 persons, including several foreigners, in Mumbai, causing international uproar and a diplomatic storm.
Shock and grief struck the people in Japan Sunday as the media reported the execution Goto by IS. “Kenji has died, and my heart is broken,” said Junko Ishido, the mother of slain journalist. “I’m just speechless. It is my only hope that we can carry on with Kenji’s mission to save the children from war and poverty,” The Guardian quoted her as saying. Newspapers in Japan issued special editions bringing news of Goto’s death. “Goto was a hugely respected journalist for his extensive experience, a man who covered children caught up in conflict, and told the stories of ordinary people and human rights problems. For all who knew him, it’s a huge loss,” the Japan Times quoted Tina Carr, director of the Rory Peck Trust, as saying.
ordan executed two convicted jihadis in retaliation for the killing of one of its air force pilots by the Islamic State (IS) militants, BBC reported. The executed terrorists included Sajida al-Rishawi, a woman, whose release the IS had demanded as a condition for releasing Jordanian pilot Moaz al-Kasasbeh. Al Qaeda operative Ziyad Karboli was also hanged, the report added. Jordan was reportedly considering to release Al-Rishawi, who was sentenced to death for her role in a failed attack in Amman in 2005, to secure the release of its pilot. Jordan vowed an “earth-shattering” response after IS posted an online video apparently showing

the pilot’s execution. Describing the pilot as “martyr”, Mamdouh al-Ameri, a spokesman for the Jordanian armed forces,
said: “His blood will not be shed in vain. Our punishment and revenge will be as huge as the loss of the Jordanians.”
UNITED NATIONS: UN SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon condemned the killing of a Jordanian pilot held captive by the Islamic State (IS), saying the terrorist organization has “no regard for human life”, Xinhua reported. In a note to the media, Ban said he shares the sorrow of the family and loved ones of Moaz al-Kasasbeh, the pilot of the Jordanian Royal Air Force, and stands in solidarity with the people of Jordan in denouncing this “appalling” act. Ban also urged all government of all countries across the world to strengthen their efforts to combat the scourge of terrorism.

enying suggestions that the US-India partnership was intended as a counterweight to China, a senior US official said its sole intent was “to build India up” working on common core values. “I would fundamentally point to the fact that this is a US-India effort and it’s not necessarily to counterweight anyone,” Phil Reiner, White House’s senior director for South Asian Affairs, told foreign media at a round-table on Obama’s India trip. “I don’t think either the US or India has an interest in any kind of confrontation or much less any sort
of intent to contain China” he said. “That’s not the intent,” Reiner said. “The intent here is to work together... to work off of the core values that we have to build India up.” “And this is something that we’re very much interested in doing, and it’s in both of our interests to do so,” he said. “I would not necessarily put that forward, though, as a counterweight to China per se.” Both US and India, Reiner said, were “very much interested in working off of those fundamental values and establishing systems that basically work off of established rules and norms in the international sphere to avoid conflict, to avoid any situation where there may be perceived bullying.”
The US President Barack Obama in India.
Discounting a New York Times report that the first issue that Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed as soon as they met was China, he said “there was many things that we spoke about.”
“Coming in the door, I think the primary thing that was talked about was the fact that we had just reached agreement on these two seminal documents - on the Delhi declaration and on the joint strategic vision,” Reiner said.

lar bhajan is unique in the sense that it remains so current in its moral underpinnings about what
between 1414 and 1481, was in a sense unwitting figure in India’s great Bhakti Movement, which flourished organically throughout the country during medieval times between 800 and 1700 CE. In the tradition of the figures of the Bhakti Movement of the time, Mehta was also a pioneering social
reformer who used the power of his poetry to break down rigid caste and class barriers. “Vaishnav Jan To, which is easily among the most widely sung songs in the world, was typical of Mehta’s deceptively simple but profound worldview. Each verse essentially defines what kind of moral standards should drive humans. I would argue that the bhajan in many ways shaped Gandhi’s larger socio-cultural view that was at the heart of the country’s freedom movement. It is any poet’s envy that a creation not only lasts centuries but continues to retain its modernity,” Chhaya says. Although “Gandhi’s Song” is pegged on “Vaishnav Jan To” because of its global recognition, the documentary will dwell on Mehta as a poet, reformer and figure who defied constricting social norms and worked all his life to establish societal equity among people divided by castes.
C
hief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched an ambitious “Friends of Madhya Pradesh” programme in New York on February 1 with a call to them and Americans to pour their talents, investments and philanthropy into his state’s development. He marked the launch by joining four US members of Congress and other dignitaries in placing their hands on a globe which lit up on the stage a projection of the portal site for the program, friendsofmp.com. The program aims to create a pool of talent and of those
interested in helping the state, he said. The event, modeled after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reception in New York last September, featured dance programmes, films about the state’s economic development programs and the Ujjain Kumbh Mela and a procession of drums and banners leading the dignitaries into the Avery Fisher Hall. About 3,000 people filled the venue, which is the home of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at the Lincoln Center. Chouhan, the three US Congresswomen, Nita Lowey, Caroline Maloney and Yvette Clarke, and Consul
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
General Dnyaneshwar Mulay spoke of the ties between the US and India boosted by the visits of Modi to the US and President Barack Obama to India and how they could mutually benefit the two democracies. Calling out to investors and friends of MP,
Chouhan said his state follows a “Single Door” policy that goes beyond the Single Window programs for investors, and asked the audience to reciprocate to the open door by “opening your hearts and coming to Madhya Pradesh”.
Indian priest to help Britain’s ailing health service ANASUDHIN AZEEZ, LONDON
F
ather Davis Chiramel, chairman of the Kidney Federation of India popularly known as “Kidney Father From Kerala”, has launched a voluntary charity organization in Britain to add more organ donors from the South Asian communities, especially Indians. According to Asian Lite newspaper, more than 1,200 patients from the Asian communities in Britain are waiting for a matching kidney donor.
Father Davis Chiramel.
The state-funded National Health Services is spending millions of pounds from their stretched budget to treat these patients through dialysis and medicines on a daily basis. Kidney transplant of these patients will ease the pressure on the cash-strapped NHS. Sibby Thomas, 47, a volunteer of the organization Upahaar, which means gift and who hails from Kerala, has already undergone an operation to give one of his kidneys to ailing Risa Mol, 15. Father Davis was present at London’s Guy’s Hospital
throughout the five-hour operation to support Sibby and his family. Francis Mathew, president of the UK Malayalee Association (UKMA), will join the donor list very soon. Another prominent Kerala organization, Federation of British Malayalees (FOBMA), is also offering their support. The father is prompting more organizations and individuals to join the list. There are nearly 200,000 Keralites living in Britain. Most of them working in the NHS as nurses and doctors.

‘Roy’ perfect gift for
Valentine Day The movie, a love triangle, is to hit theaters just a day ahead of Valentine’s Day IANS, MUMBAI
A
ctor Jacqueline Fernandez’s forthcoming film “Roy” will hit the screens on February 13, a day before Valentine’s Day. The Sri Lankan beauty says it will be the perfect treat for the audiences as it has an interesting love story. “I’m very excited that ‘Roy’ is releasing in Valentine’s Day week. ‘Roy’ is actually a suspense drama but it’s also a very
romantic love story. I think it would be the perfect watch to go for on Valentine’s Day,” Jacqueline said at an event here.
“Roy” is love triangle starring Arjun Rampal and Ranbir Kapoor in key roles. Jacqueline is playing a double role in it.
“Roy” is love triangle starring actors Arjun Rampal and Ranbir Kapoor in key roles. Jacqueline is playing a double role in it. Meanwhile, when asked about her V-Day plans, she said: “I do not have a Valentine’s Day plan...I mean not any romantic plan because I am going for the premiere of ‘Roy’”. “I think that will probably the best way I can celebrate my Valentine’s Day,” said Jacqueline, chuckingly.
Amaan, Ayaan to perform in NY IANS, NEW YORK
A
maan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan, the sons of the sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, will give a concert at the New York's Symphony Space on February 10. They will be accompanied by the renowned violinist Elmira Darvarova, former concertmaster at the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the table virtuoso Salar Nader. Amaan, the eldest son of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, belongs to the seventh generation in an unbroken chain of the Senia Bangash School. He was initiated by his father into the art of sarod playing and gave his first public performance at age of eight. Amaan has performed at numerous venues in India and around the world.

In 2005, Amaan composed music for the film 'American Daylight' which was directed by Academy Award winner Rodger Christian. In the same year, he also collaborated with the Derek Trucks Band at the Savannah Music Festival in
Georgia and featured with Ustad Amjad Ali Khan in Real World Record's album called ‘Moksha’. Ayaan, the younger son, also gave his solo debut when he was eight years old and has been performing concerts in India and abroad.
Sonam never wanted to use father’s name MUMBAI: It’s always thought that Bollywood’s star children have it easy, but actress Sonam Kapoor says that at the very beginning of her film career, she had decided not to make the most of her father Anil Kapoor’s popularity. “When I joined the film industry, I became very defensive because people were so mean. They were like, ‘She is Anil’s daughter and she will get things very easily’. So I said, ‘I am never going to use my dad for anything’,” Sonam, who forayed into acting with “Saawariya”, said. From there on, Sonam says “I did
‘Rahasya’ - gripping,
everything on my own”. “I called the directors on my own. I never called my dad for help. My dad
said to me, ‘I have worked very hard for 50 years so that my children can have a better life. Why aren’t you using it?’. “He says, ‘I have done this for you guys, so use it’. But I was like, ‘I can do it on my own’. But no matter how much I did, people still say it’s because of my dad,” added the actress, who went on to feature in movies like “Raanjhanaa” and “Khoobsurat”. Now Sonam’s brother Harshvardhan is set to make his film debut via Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s “Mirziya”.
alf of the star-rating extra for the sheer abundance of acting talent that Manish Gupta’s stylish confidently-shot whodunit throws forward, with Kay Kay Menon helming the murder mystery as an walnut-chomping CBI officer on the trail of the murder of a young girl, who is killed in her swanky home while her doctor-father was drunk in the next room. No no no...don’t go away! This is not the tragic Arushi Talwar murder revisited and sensationalized on celluloid. Director Manish Gupta, who has earlier made a strong but crude film on ragging, “Hostel”, keeps the proceedings on an even keel. Taking the Talwar tragedy as a take-off point, writer-director Gupta has woven an intricate whodunit with enough twists and turns to keep us guessing about the murderer’s identity till the very end. The killer’s identity, when revealed, is not entirely unexpected but nonetheless shocking and more importantly, convincing. Whodunits in Bollywood frequently flounder in their endgame. Not “Rahasya”. Gupta keeps the narrative going in a steady flow and at a perky pace. The shots are cut deftly. Editor Suresh Pai gives
the wide array of characters ample room to breathe but never allows them to overstay their welcome. This suspense here largely depends on the efficacy of the actors. And here’s where “Rahasya” really scores. Kay Kay Menon as the wry investigative officer fighting off his wife’s persistent demands to get corrupt, brings a tremendous engagingness to his character. His character Sunil Paraskar is a man who survives the hardships of a thankless job by cracking cruel jokes about himself and others. Particularly grating on the nervous system is that wonderful actress Ashwini Kalsekar, who as the dead girl’s nanny, whines, sobs, moans and wails almost throughout the film. This is a dark, desperate, sinister, gutsy and gripping thriller.

Red carpet moment for Nimrat...
T
he Lunchbox actor Nimrat Kaur is ecstatic about having attended the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards in Los Angeles and living her “favorite dream” of rubbing shoulders with some of her biggest childhood idols. “It was like a dream,” Nimrat said. “I was standing on the same carpet as Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston and Ethan Hawke. It was as if I had walked into my favorite dream.” Nimrat says she was too shy to speak to anyone, except Ethan Hawke. “When I saw him on the red carpet, I had to tell him that Great Expectations was one of my favorite films. I blurted it out nervously. He was very nice to me. But to go and speak to Meryl Streep or Julia Roberts was beyond me,” she said. She admits The Lunchbox and now her stint on the American series Homeland have brought her global recognition. Call her the female Irrfan Khan, and she says: “That’s a very high compliment indeed. To be bracketed with someone who has done Indian cinema proud all over the world is very gratifying”.
‘The Dirty Politics’ release postponed to Holi
M
allika Sherawat-starrer "The Dirty Politics", which was earlier slated to release on February 13, will now hit the screens on March 6, which happens to be Holi. The reason behind the delay is to avoid a clash with other films, and to record one more song. The film's director K.C. Bokadia told IANS: “Earlier my film was supposed to release on Feb 13, but since my song 'Ghaghra' is doing really well, we have decided to record one more song for this film. So, Mallika will be shooting for this song on February 13, 14 and 15.” Bokadia says March 6 gives them a "good window" due to the festival of Holi, which also falls on the same day.

ctor Sunny Leone for her upcoming film Leela, has shot a song, which is a reworked version of the chartbuster Dholi taro dhol baaje from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Salman Khan-Aishwarya Rai starrer Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. “Bhushan Kumar, our producer, already had the rights to the song. It was his idea to rework the song and he got the Meet brothers to do it,” says Ahmed Khan, who has choreographed the song for the film which is being directed by his brother Bobby Khan. A massive set was erected in the dunes of Jaisalmer. A crowd of over 500 dancers assembled for the shoot that lasted for a week.
ctor Bipasha Basu says though she is in a demanding profession, her work is not her top priority. Bipasha, who has completed over a decade in the Hindi film industry, is one of the few actresses among her contemporaries who is busy even now. How does she review her career? “I have done over 60 films and in the last six years, I have done one film at a time. I would like to lead my life ... that is my priority,” Bipasha told IANS. “I happen to be in a demanding profession, but work comes second. Right from the beginning, I have never planned anything while doing films... I have realised that I love acting. I look forward to life. I don’t look back. I am a very unpredictable person,” she added. Bipasha was last seen in the horror film Alone, which hit the screens on January 16 this year.

Swami Ishatmananda then inaugurated the series with the traditional lamp-lighting ceremony with the assistance of Jhansi Reddy. In his inaugural speech, Swami Ishatmananda gave a beautiful explanation for Yagna--the devotee pours his ignorance into the fire while offering oblations and thus becomes one with Shiva. President Sri. Bhima Reddy explained how the HTGC, which started as a place of worship three decades ago, had transformed into a monumental institution upholding the traditional cultural, religious, and spiritual values that India holds dear. This was followed by Sri. Lakshman Agadi explaining the three-day
Mahayagnam in detail. He invited the gathering to attend the grand function in June, which will be marked by more than a thousand women reciting the Lalitha Sahasranamam, invoking the Divine Mother with Her 1,008 names. He said hundreds of scholars from all over the country would gather and chant Sri Rudram, the most ancient Vedic prayer for Lord Shiva. The Navachandi Mahayagnam on June 14 has been planned in such a way that everybody can participate in offering oblations into the sacred fire. Vrious Ṣaints and Satgurus have accepted the invitation to grace the occasion with their presence, which is likely to be attended by over 5,000 devotees over the three-day span. Consul General Dr. Ausuf Sayeed
explained how he researched on Sri Rudram after being invited to this occasion and that he was inspired to learn that Rudra actually meant someone who eliminated evil and establishes peace. Rudra, he said, was the beginning from where the entire universe emanated and to which everything would converge “when we obtain liberation through the knowledge of The Supreme Being”. He said Mahayagnas were an ancient Indian heritage and had been performed since time immemorial with the objective of global peace. A major highlight of the evening was the perfect rendition of Sri Rudram by Sri. Steve Burdick and Sri. Jeffrey Erhard, which prompted the attendees to rise and give a standing ovation. Erhard then followed this with a soul-stirring bhajan session on Lord Shiva. Erhard and Burdick were honored by Sri. Tilak Marwaha, vice president of HTGC and Prasanna Reddy, Religious Chair, with shawls and gifts. The program was followed by a wonderful Bharatanatyam performance by “Natya Bhairavi” Sulakshana Jayaram, an empanelled artist for the Indian council of cultural relations. “Rudraarpanam - An ode to Rudra” was choreographed entirely by her for this inaugural event. Sulakshana Jayaram was honored by Vedavati Agadi, Jhansi Reddy, and Prasanna Reddy. Vijaya Sarma, Co-Chair of Maharudram Committee, gave the vote of thanks.

NGLEWOOD, NJ -- A group of people beat an employee of a Route 4 gas station on February 1 and stole candy, cigarettes and lighters. Two carloads of people, mostly from the Bronx, arrived at the gas station early in the morning from a late night party in Englewood. Some began stealing small items like candy, cigarettes and lighters from the station’s store. When the store manager tried to stop them, they beat him and hit him with merchandise from the store before fleeing. The manager suffered cuts and bruises.
The New York police are assisting Englewood detectives with their investigation after collecting physical evidence and video footage of the attack from the store’s security system.

TLANTA, GA -- The FBI is investigating reports that a Delta Air Lines gate agent boarded several flights without going through TSA security checks, in direct violation of federal law. According to an indictment, James Crawford is accused of using his employee badge to bypass security and board a Januar y 24 flight from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. He was arrested on the plane before it departed. Crawford works as a gate agent within the Security Identification Display Area, a restricted area in Atlanta’s airport. He has a special badge that gives him access to the area. On December 26, the Delta Air Lines Ethics and Compliance Office received a tip that Crawford had used his SIDA badge to skip TSA security and board several domestic and international flights. The tipster said that since September 2014, Crawford had used his Delta employee flight privileges to take the trips, but never went through security before boarding the planes, according to the indictment. Delta Corporate Security notified the FBI of Crawford’s travels on January 16. The indictment charges Crawford with entering an aircraft or airport area in violation of security requirements.
Syed works with small and large businesses and has over 15 years of banking experience. He currently works with the Chicago chapter of GOPIO and serves as their treasurer. He is also on the board of the Federations Indian Associations (FIA) along with Friends of Hyderabad. Syed can be reached at 847-870-6020 or via email at shussaini@vbankatvillage.com

R-DAY CELEBRATED AT INDIAN CONSULATE BY A STAFF WRITER

ADUE, MO -- An unknown amount of cameras and lenses were stolen from Creve Coeur Camera in Ladue in the wee hours of February 5. The police received a call around 1:15 a.m. for a break-in at the shop located at the Ladue Crossing Shopping Center in the 8850 block of Ladue Road. According to the police, who are looking through the surveillance footage at the store, at least one unknown suspect used a rock to smash the window of the store.
HICAGO (IL) -- Honorable Consul General Ausaf Sayeed celebrated India’s 66th Republic Day on January 26 with leading Chicagoland entrepreneurs and citizens to honor the sacrifices the country’s freedom fighters had made and to remember the work of India’s founding fathers. He also extended his warmest greetings to all across the country and also to those living abroad. ‘Slam’ it like grand Leander Leander Paes won the mixed doubles crown at the 2015 Australian Open with Swiss partner Martina Hingis for his 15th career Grand Slam title

I
ndian tennis star Leander Paes and his Swiss partner Martina Hingis beat the French-Canadian team of Kristina Mladenovic and Daniel Nestor in straight sets to clinch the Australian Open mixed doubles crown here. Paes, contesting his 25th season on the ATP World Tour, and Hingis defeated defending champions Mladenovic and Nestor 6-4, 6-3 in the final that lasted an hour and two minutes. Paes has now won 15 Grand
Slam championship titles - eight men’s doubles and seven mixed doubles. It was his third mixed doubles triumph at Melbourne Park, having also won in 2003 (with Martina Navratilova) and 2010 (with Cara Black). “It’s a great honor to keep coming back to Australia,” said 41-yearold Paes. “There are a few people who got us together. All you guys back home, who put us together to win our first Grand Slam, thank you.” In the first set, Paes and Hingis took a 3-0 lead, but Nestor and Mladenovic’s I-formation caused
President, PM congratulate Paes NEW DELHI: President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Indian tennis icon Leander Paes for winning the Australian Open mixed doubles title in Melbourne, partnering Swiss veteran Martina Hingis. “Leander Paes continues to make us proud! I congratulate him on the mixed doubles win with Martina Hingis at the Australian Open,” Modi tweeted. Echoing the same sentiment, Mukherjee tweeted: “Congratulations to Leander Paes on the Mixed Doubles win at the Australian Open.” The 41-year-old Paes has now won 15 Grand Slam titles.
Dhoni’s men can get inspired by Paes... IANS, NEW DELHI
L
ate last week, three things kept Indian sport in focus. The cricket team failed to make the tri-series final to end a dreadful tour of Australia, a Dutchman has been named the new national hockey coach and Leander Paes partnered another Martina (Hingis) to win his seventh Grand Slam title in mixed doubles to add to his eight in the men’s doubles. If nothing appears beyond Paes even at 41, nothing seems to be going right for the cricket team with the World Cup less than two weeks away. The appointment of Paul van Ass, 54, as chief coach of the hockey team is a bolt from the blue with no media leaks or speculation ahead of the appointment. Paes is so exciting to watch on a tennis court giving expression to his passion for the game. He has yet again proved that he can win a major with any partner, Hingis this time in Melbourne. Exactly ten

years ago he had played with the other Martina, the legendary Navratilova, who even waited for him to return to court after a lifethreatening parasitic infection. Paes played with South African Raven Klassen at the Australian Open, his 99th partner in the men’s
doubles, and Hingis was the 23rd in the mixed - an amazing record for a doubles specialist, who has been around for over a quarter of a century, playing over 40 weeks each year. The beauty is in the tennis philosophy of Paes and Hingis. He was confident that he could do
well with her where as the Hingis thought he would be better off playing with another circuit regular. Maybe, that made both of them to put in that extra bit of effort as there was little doubt about their exceptional skills. How true is the strengths and weaknesses theory Paes has spoken of. Only two great exponents could plan it out so well to win without losing a set. That itself a remarkable thing in modern day doubles. The Indian cricket team can get inspired by Paes’s zeal and determination. They need not worry too much about some people writing their chances of defending the World Cup off after their disastrous tour Down Under. Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his players know that World Cup is a totally different format and they can bounce back with the rub of the green going their way. Though the Indians would have liked a better preparation for the big event, they should be confident
problems and they soon levelled the scoreline. At 4-5, a backhand drive volley error by Mladenovic gave Paes and Hingis a set point opportunity on Nestor’s serve. He struck a double fault to end the 29-minute first set. Nestor and Mladenovic broke Hingis for a 2-1 lead in the second set, but Mladenovic was broken in the next game. Net errors by Nestor paved the way to hand Paes and Hingis a 4-2 lead, but Nestor regained his rhythm on return of serve to break Hingis again. Mladenovic was broken in the eighth game and Hingis went on to seal victory with a smash winner. Paes and Hingis converted five of their seven break point opportunities, hitting 19 winners and committing just 11 unforced errors for victory on Rod Laver Arena. Former World No.1 Hingis also won the Australian Open mixed doubles title in 2006 (with Mahesh Bhupathi). “(We were) probably just maybe a little less aggressive on some second serves to Hingis,” said Nestor. “Too many double-faults. I was maybe a little too aggressive with the second serve.” Nestor said, “They played better for sure. Even when I thought I was serving okay, they were still making a lot of balls. They played well.”
enough taking heart from their status as the No.2 team in the rankings of the One-Day Internationals. They have a problem with the top order batting and may not be sure of their bowling composition what with the injuries to some of their key bowlers. In fact, their in-form opener Rohit Sharma did not play the last three games nursing a hamstring. Likewise pacer Ishant Sharma did not bowl flat out even in the nets but stayed with the team for over a month. Now it is being said he may not be fit for the tournament itself. Ravindra Jadeja is another bowler who is an iffy, though he bowled 9.5 overs when the day’s best bowler Stuart Binny bowled only eight. Obviously Dhoni was putting Jadeja through the ringer to test his fitness than worry about winning the match which they could have with a little imagination. Let the team settle their fitness problems before discussing their chances of making the semi-finals. Coming to the hockey development, none of the coaches in recent years left with any goodwill, some of them have literally been hounded out.

Nothing special about stardom: Dhanush

tardom comes with its own baggage, believes leading actress Kajal Aggarwal, who works in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films. She says the expectations that come with being a “star” are not easy to live up to. “The expectations are very high, especially with the choice of films,” Kajal told IANS in an interview. “People expect you to be always right and choose films that’ll strike a chord with them and I think it’s almost impossible. When I choose When I choose a film, which I do a film, which I instinctively, I’m do instinctively, not hundred percent sure it’s going I am not to work or not,” hundred percent she said. sure it is going Despite the presto work or not, sure, Kajal, who has been working for says Kajal nearly a decade, has stayed in the top league with hits such as Thuppakki, Jilla and Yevadu. She credits that to the encouragement she’s got from people of all the industries. “Sometimes you’re well received in one industry but not so much in the other. I’m lucky as I’ve been unanimously accepted everywhere I go,” she added. A star’s life has its own share of merits and demerits, she noted.

e’s that rare humble, grounded and modest talented actor who considers stardom “nothing more than a little extra attention than the normal crowd”. That’s Dhanush for you. “I think stardom is all about little extra attention than normal people. Among all the normal people, a few get some extra attention, and so, there is nothing special about stardom,” Dhanush told IANS during his visit to the capital for the promotion of his forthcoming Bollywood film Shamitabh. Known for his Tamil movies Aadukalam, Pollathavan and Vela Illa Pattathari, the 31-year-old finds “nothing great” about stardom as he feels that at the end of the day, actors “are also working to earn bread and butter”. “I’ve always seen in my life that if a person makes `5, he has a problem worth `6. So, it doesn’t matter how much a filmstar earns or how much a software engineer earns. Everyone has their own set of problems to deal with,” added the National Film award winning
actor, who maintains a balance between his southern films and Bollywood projects with his love for travelling and reading. Dhanush doesn’t have the conventional Bollywood ‘hero’ looks — but by virtue of his talent, he won the heart of Hindi film audiences as an obsessive lover in his
Among all the normal people, a few get some extra attention, and so, there is nothing special about stardom debut Hindi movie Raanjhanaa. His endearing smile and screen presence in the Sonam Kapoorstarrer has made his second Hindi film Shamitabh much awaited. The competition in Bollywood is getting tougher by the day, but Dhanush is nonchalant. “I have just come here (in Hindi filmdom) and I have only time enough to focus on my character and live upto my director’s or audiences’ expectations. Competition is unnecessary,” he said.

He captured me in a very candid pose and I didn’t even realise it. He got the blackand-white picture printed, framed and gifted it to me. I think the picture is a gesture of appreciation for my work,” she noted.

elugu audiences will get to see actor Gopichand in a never-seen-before avatar in upcoming action-comedy Jill, says its director Radha Krishna Kumar. The actor has undergone a stylish makeover for the film. “Right from his hair to clothes, everything you see about Gopi in this film will be new. He requested for a makeover and keeping it in mind, I made slight changes to his character and have presented it stylishly,” Kumar told IANS. “Gopi felt it’s important to portray himself differently from one film to another.
