Earlier, the United Nations Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change and former mayor of New York City Michael R Bloomberg on February 16 sought to strengthen US-India economic partnership through relaxed US immigration measures for Indian students and businessmen, and said India was poised to become a “leader” in clean energy the world could learn from. Obama condemns attacks on Muslim students IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Barack Obama condemned the “brutal and outrageous murders” of three Muslim students in the state of North Carolina last week and said that no one should be targeted for their looks or modes of worship. “No one in the United States of America should ever be targeted because of who they are, what they look like, or how they worship,” Obama said in a statement, according to a CNN report. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is probing the killings along with local police, who believe that the shooting was related to a parking dispute,

though they have not ruled out the possibility of it being a hate crime. Deah Barakat, 23, his wife, Yusor Mohammad Abu Salha, 21 and her
sister, Razan Mohammad Abu Salha, 19, were sot dead in their apartment by the 46-year-old Craig Stephen Hicks, who surrendered to
the authorities “without incident”. The three victims were students of the University of North Carolina and the victims' family said that they believed the killings were motivated by anti-Muslim sentiment. “As we saw with the overwhelming presence at the funeral of these young Americans, we are all one American family,” Obama said. Obama then quoted one of the victims, Yusor Mohammed. “Growing up in America has been such a blessing,” Yusor had said recently. “It doesn't matter where you come from. He later also met a high-level Christian delegation. Addressing Christian leaders at a function here, the prime minister reached out to them, saying he strongly condemned violence against any religion. “My government will ensure that there is complete freedom of faith and that everyone has the undeniable right to retain or adopt the religion of his or her choice without coercion or undue influence. Who blew up the Pak boat?
NEW DELHI: A Coast Guard official, who said he ordered that a Pakistani boat be blown up, on February 18 denied making the statement. However, an Indian Express video showed the official, saying “Blow the boat off...We don’t want to serve them biryani”. Coast Guard Deputy Inspector General (DIG) B.K. Loshali on February 18 refuted media reports that said he ordered the blowing up of a suspected Pakistani boat on the intervening night of Dec 31 and Jan 1 off Porbandar in Gujarat. Addressing a press conference in Ahmedabad, the officer said media reports quoting him as saying that he ordered that the suspected boat be blasted were wrong and not factual. “The operation was not handled by me. I was not fully privy to it,” he told reporters. Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar has said he will enquire into a Coast Guard officer’s statement. “I will enquire,” said Parrikar who was in Bengaluru for the Aero India. The little over a minute long video shows the senior Coast Guard officer saying: “I hope you remember 31st December night”. “We blew off the Pakistan...”.

Asia and beyond. A strong defense industry, will not only make us more secure, but also more prosperous,” Modi told global aerospace firms participating in the five-day air show at the Yelahanka base of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on the city’s outskirts. Admitting that India had the reputation of being the world’s largest importer of defense equipment, the prime minister, however, said the country would not like to be in that position though imports were inevitable in the military arena. In view of the security challenges in the region, Modi said there was a need to increase the country’s defense preparedness by modernizing the defense forces.

Modi has been facing flak for not speaking out strongly against saffron fringe elements of his Bharatiya Janata Party-led government who have kicked up a controversy by peddling the Hindutva agenda and by their comments on “ghar wapsi”, or return to the Hindu faith. “India is the land of Buddha and Gandhi. Equal respect for all religions must be in the DNA of every Indian. We cannot accept violence against any religion on any pretext and I strongly condemn such violence. My government will act strongly in this regard,” Modi said. He also appealed to all religious groups “to act with restraint, mutual respect, and tolerance in the true spirit of this ancient nation which is manifest in our Constitution and is in line with the Hague Declaration”.

“We have the strongest military in history of the world, and with Secretary Carter at the Pentagon and our troops serving bravely around the world, we’re going to keep it that way,” he added. During his confirmation hearing last week, Carter, who as Pentagon

Defense plays a vital role in USIndia relations, which includes a robust series of military exchanges and exercises, a strong track record on defense trade, and increasingly close consultations on regional security issues. During his recent India trip, he noted Obama announced four pathfinder projects under DTTI. Carter said he will also “continue to find ways to strengthen our military-to-military relationship by expanding the scope and complexity of our exercises, and ensure the consistency of our engagement”.

KABUL: At least 14 people, including 10 police personnel, were killed and eight injured on February 17 after Taliban militants attacked a police station in Afghanistan’s Logar province. Four attackers, armed with guns and wearing suicide vests, attacked the eastern Afghan province’s police headquarters in Pul-e-Alam city. “The attackers arrived in a car. One militant detonated an explosive vest in the front gate. Three others succeeded in entering the building. Two other militants were killed during gunfight.
CAIRO: The Egyptian government said on February 16 that it has enforced a travel ban to Libya after the Islamic State (IS) jihadi group beheaded 21 Egyptians. “We have thousands of Egyptians in Libya and we are in contact with them, directly or through third parties,” Egyptian foreign ministry spokesman Badr Abdel-Atty told reporters in Cairo. “We are coordinating with the (Libyan) government along with heads of different tribes in order to secure their safety and provide facilities for those who would like to return to Egypt,” he added. Many young Egyptians, faced with grim economic prospects at home are known to have crossed over to the neighboring Libya in search of jobs. Militants have frequently attacked Egyptian citizens and installations in Libya as the turmoil has worsened in the country.
Bangladesh court on February 18 sentenced a Jamaate-Islami leader to death for leading pro-Pakistan militias to commit war crimes such as murders, genocide and abductions in Pabna in 1971. International Crimes Tribunal-2 Chairman, Justice Obaidul Hasan, handed Abdus Subhan the maximum penalty on February 18. With six of the nine charges levelled by the prosecution having been proven beyond doubt, he was sentenced to be hanged till death. The other two tribunal members, Justice Md. Mujibur Rahman Mia and Justice Shahinur Islam, were also present at the time of the sentencing -- the 16th conviction for crimes against humanity.
Subhan was charged for leading pro-Pakistan militias to commit war crimes.
Subhan, a former Member of Parliament from Pabna, was the chief of the Jamaat’s Pabna unit and was in the party’s highest policymaking body during the postLiberation War era. It was revealed
during the trial that Subhan, along with Pakistani soldiers, had indulged in murders, mass killings, arson and looting once “Operation Searchlight” was launched on the night of March 25, 1971.

ndia had won all their previous five meetings against Pakistan in the World Cup and it was no different on February 15 as the defending champions defeated their neighbors by 76 runs to take the advantage to a perfect tennis scoreline of 6-0. India once again came out on top in the high-octane clash to defeat Pakistan in their World Cup opener at the picturesque Adelaide Oval. A special century by vice-captain Virat Kohli (107) guided India to 300/7 which Pakistan failed to chase down, being bowled out for 224 in 47 overs. Statistics showed that Pakistan
‘One of the biggest wins of my career’ ADELAIDE: India’s match-winner against Pakistan during the Pool B World Cup game here, Virat Kohli said the victory is “one of the biggest” wins in his career as the defending champions beat their traditional rivals by 76 runs. “Probably one of the biggest (win) in my career so far,” said Kohli at the post-match presentation ceremony. “Amazing way to begin our World Cup with a win under our belt, but they did put up a strong fight.” Asked how he felt being hailed as the new Sachin Tendulkar, Kohli said: “Expectations are going to be there when you do well. I just look to stand up to them.”
have never chased more than 262 successfully and India have always defended a total of 300 or more in the quadrennial event. Both teams allowed the records to continue. Opting to bat, India got off to a fluent start through openers Rohit Sharma (15) and Shikhar Dhawan
(73). Rohit looked in prime touch until he gifted away his wicket while trying to pull a not-so-short delivery in the eighth over. However, Dhawan struck an important secondwicket 129-run partnership with Kohli which gave India the platform to put up a big total. Dhawan looked good to score a hundred but confusion in the 30th over with Kohli resulted in him being run out. It was the perfect opportunity for Pakistan to capitalize with India at 163 for two with 20 overs to go. However, big-hitter Suresh Raina made sure his wicket counted for India as he smashed 74 off just 56 balls which boosted his team's run rate close to run-a-ball. Meanwhile, Kohli played the anchor's innings and applied his sublime touch to notch up his 22nd One-Day International (ODI) hundred, which was punctuated by eight boundaries.

Ireland shock Windies, Kiwis struggle against Scots NELSON/DUNEDIN: Ireland put the West Indies bowlers to the sword and eased to a four-wicket win, causing the first major upset of the ICC World Cup at the Saxton Oval in Nelson on February 17. In another match on February 18, the hosts Kiwis struggled to overcome a spirited challenge from the minnows Scotland. Chasing 305 for the win, the Irish scored 307 for six in 45.5 overs to record their fifth World Cup victory. Ireland had previously defeated Pakistan, Bangladesh, England and the Netherlands in World Cups. Opener Paul Stirling led the
charge for the Irish smashing 92 off 84 balls and was given brilliant support by Ed Joyce (84) and Niall O’Brien (79 not out). The pair added 106 runs for the second wicket following a 71-run stand between captain William Porterfield (23) and Stirling. A commendable bowling performance set up New Zealand’s three wicket victory against Scotland in a Pool A match in Dunedin. The Cup co-hosts, among the top contenders to win the mega tournament, struggled to post a shaky win against the minnows.
eft-hand all-rounder Yuvraj Singh and wicketkeeperbatsman Dinesh Karthik were sold for big bucks in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction held here on February 16 ahead of the eighth season. Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews and Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra also fetched big money in the auction. Yuvraj was picked up by Delhi Daredevils for a stupendous `160 million. Karthik was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for a `105 million. All-rounder Mathews, currently in World Cup duty where they lost their opening match against New Zealand Saturday, was picked up for a `75 million by Daredevils which also took in Mishra (`35 million) and pacer Zaheer Khan (`40 million). New Zealand bowler Trent Boult was another big signing of the day, going for `38 million to Sunrisers Hyderabad, which also picked up England captain Eoin Morgan for `15 million. Sacked England batsman Kevin Pietersen was also snapped up by
Yuvraj Singh
Hyderabad for `20 million while Australian batsman Aaron Finch, who scored a superb match-winning century against England in the World Cup, was bought by Mumbai Indians (MI) for `32 million. Indian left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha was also bought by Mumbai
for `5 million. Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) picked up veteran left-arm spinner Brad Hogg for `5 million. Another experienced Australian Michael Hussy was snapped up by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for `15 million. Former West Indies captain Darren Sammy went to RCB for `28 million. Rajasthan Royals, winners of the first edition of IPL in 2008, bought South African all-rounder Christopher Morris for `14 million. The auction process heated up when a bidding war between RCB and Daredevils saw Yuvraj’s price skyrocket. Finally, the Delhi franchise bid a whopping `16 crore for the batsman, who was left out of the India squad for the World Cup. RCB had let go of Yuvraj, the most expensive buy of the last IPL auction, after buying him for `140 million the last time around. Daredevils, which finished bottom among eight teams in the 2014 IPL, were the most active team of the auction, accounting for three of the five most expensive buys of the auction.

A bench of Justice T.S.Thakur and Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, while disposing of the petition by veteran Left leader and former state chief minister V.S. Achuthanandan, however said that the trial court could proceed against Chandy if in the course of the proceedings, evidence surfaces pointing finger at him. The then Congress government headed by Chief Minister K.Karunakaran had imported 15,000 tonnes palm oil from a Malaysian firm. The case was regis-

Chandrababu Naidu here on February 16. This followed the chief minister’s meeting with David Cheesewright, president and CEO of Walmart International, at the World Economic Forum in Davos recently. According to a statement from the chief minister’ office, Iyer thanked Naidu for introducing the single-desk policy and 21-day clearance plan and said that it will make the investment environment conducive in the state. The retail major presently has three stores in Andhra Pradesh at Vijayawada, Guntur and Rajahmundry. Iyer said that the company’s plan is to have wholesale stores in every district. He added that Walmart is also keen on investing in social and rural entrepreneurship through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

On the plea by Chandy’s counsel, the court in its order said that trial court would act in accordance with section 319 of the Code of Criminal Procedure which defines the powers of the trial court to proceed against other persons appearing to be guilty of offense on the basis of evidence that surfaced during the course of the trial. At the outset of the hearing, Justice Thakur told senior counsel Shekhar Naphade, who appeared for Achuthanandan, that the state government wanted to close the case but its plea was not accepted by the trial court and the same was upheld by the division bench of the high court. Naphade told the court that as the then finance minister, Chandy could not escape the consequences of the illegalities in the import of palm oil as he had released the funds.

Indians under racial attacks? There has been a spate of “racial” attacks on Indian-Americans recently, with three incidents occurring within a week, including a brutal killing. Ironically, this comes close on the heels of the US President Barack Obama’s call for religious tolerance during his India tour...
HINDU TEMPLE VANDALIZED IN WASHINGTON STATE IANS, NEW YORK
I
n the latest attack targeting Hindus places of worship, a temple in Washington State was vandalized on the eve of its planned celebration of Maha Shivaratri, according to media reports. When members of the Hindu Temple Cultural Centre in Bothell, 36 km from Seattle, went there on Sunday they found a swastika painted on it and “Get Out” scrawled in large letters with spray paint. In the U.S., white supremacists have adopted the Nazi swastika as an ideological symbol. KING 5 TV, an NBC affiliated station in Seattle, said, “In Hinduism, swastikas signified peace long before it became a Nazi symbol. In this case, temple leaders say it’s now being used not just to hurt their believers but a neighborhood.” The Bothell temple incident comes ten days after President Barack Obama criticized India at an inter-religious prayer meeting saying intolerance there “would have

shocked Gandhiji.” “I was paranoid to say the truth, this just doesn’t look right to me,” temple member Jay Araman told Seattle’s KIRO TV, a CBS affiliate. “He fears the red graffiti, sprawled across the outside of the temple, could be a sign that someone is planning something violent,” the station added. Echoing the fears, Thampipillai Thilakarjah told Q13 Fox TV station that his 11-year-old son was
scared to visit the temple. The Bothell Reporter newspaper reported that the incident was under investigation but no suspect has yet been identified according to Shari L. Ireton, a spokesperson for Snohomish County Sheriff. “The timing of this crime, occurring before a major Hindu festival, warrants special attention from law enforcement,” said Jay Kansara, Hindu American Foundation’s Director of Government Relations.
“We are encouraged by the ongoing thorough investigation of the Bothell City Police Department.” There has been a spate of antiHindu attacks across the U.S. in recent months. In August a murti of Shiva at the Vishwa Bhavan Hindu Mandir in Georgia state was desecrated with black paint. The phone lines of the temple in Monroe, near Georgia, were cut and graffiti wits hate messages were written on it. The local sheriff’s office arrested two people in connection with the attack. Between July and October in Loudon County in Virginia, police documented 17 separate incidents of anti-Hindu vandalism, HAF said. In response to these attacks, the U.S. Justice Department has mandated the inclusion of anti-Hindu hate crimes as a category in crimereporting forms starting in January. In Bothell, a government-run school was also defaced with a swastika and the words, “Muslims Get Out,” according to Q13 Fox.
Indian-American killed inside liquor shop
WASHINGTON: An Indian-American succumbed to bullet wounds after he was gunned down in his family-owned liquor shop in the U.S. state of New Jersey, according to a media report. Amit Patel, 28, was shot and killed inside Roseway Liquors in Irvington on February 15 afternoon, Eyewitness News reported, adding that authorities were trying to identify the killer. Police found Patel injured with a gunshot wound when they reached the liquor shop. He was pronounced dead a short time later. Amit was manning the shop alone while his father was in the back office when the gunshots were fired. “We don’t know if it was a robbery, nobody knows. They were alone here,” Bimal Patel, a family friend, was quoted as saying. The victim got married only a year ago.
Alabama governor sorry for police attack on Indian ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

n an unusual gesture, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley issued a public apology for the attack by police on an Indian man that left him partially paralysed. "Please accept our sincere apology for this tragic incident to your government, (Sureshbhai) Patel and the citizens of India who live and work in this state," the Republican governor wrote in a letter to Ajit Kumar, the Indian consul general in Atlanta. The letter was publicized by Bentley's office on February 17. The attack on 57-year-old Patel, who was visiting his son in Madison, was captured on a video camera on a police vehicle. plaint that a "skinny black guy" was loitering around, is seen slamming him to the ground after Patel, who does not speak English, could not answer his questions. Patel is partially paralysed after the attack.
Bentley said that he has instructed the director of the state's Law Enforcement Agency to conduct an investigation into the incident and gave the assurance that "we will see that justice is done".
"I deeply regret the unfortunate use of excessive force by the Madison Police Department on Sureshbhai Patel and for the injuries sustained by Patel," Bentley said in his letter. "I sincerely hope that Patel continues to improve and that he will regain full use of his legs." Although disdained by many as a socially backward and conservative state, Alabama's reaction to the racially-charged incident involving a white police officer and a person of color stands out in contrast to the way recent police attacks on minorities have been handled elsewhere. Bentley took responsibility for the incident, ordered an inquiry and apologized. Officials in Madison dismissed the officer, Eric Parker, filed assault charges against him and arrested him. In New York, a police officer
choked an unarmed African American man to death in an incident caught on camera by a passerby. However, he was allowed to stay on the force while grand jury failed to bring charges against him. In Ferguson in Missouri, an African American teenager was shot dead by police and that officer also remained on the force and a grand jury cleared him. The Ferguson case led to several days of rioting by an enraged public. Meanwhile, an Internet fundraiser on Gofundme.com to collect contributions for Patel's medical treatment has raised $189,102 by February 17 night against a target of $100,000. Sureshbhai Patel, 57, had recently come from India to help care for his grandson, who was born prematurely and was suffering from health complications.

It was an oops moment that Nimrat will cherish forever — just like her BAFTA-nominated film The Lunchbox. Nimrat got to give away two prestigious awards on stage. “Yes! I was asked to give away the awards for Best Music Score and Best Documentary,” she said. While waiting backstage for her turn to give away the awards, she ran into Beckham. Recounting the memorable ‘trip’, Nimrat said: “He was standing with me backstage to give away awards. We stuck up a conversation. I was disarmed by his nervousness about going on stage. Put this soccer champ on the field, and he’s confident. But the idea of going on stage was giving him the jitters.” In his nervousness, Beckham stepped on Nirmat’s stunning gown and nearly tripped over. “Yes, David Beckham did step on my gown. I guess the dubious honor of having the soccer legend trip on my dress must go to me,” she quipped. The actor, who bagged a role in American show Homeland after The Lunchbox, was at the BAFTA Awards gala to root for the latter, which was nominated in the Best Film Not In English Language category.

Sindhu’s father Kinnera Krishnaiah, a resident of Kshavaralaveedhi in Chinnabazar area in Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, lodged a complaint with the local police but said there was no immediate response from the officials with regard to registration of the case. Sindhu was married to Udaya Kumar, a resident of Hyderabad, four years ago. He was working as a hardware professional in California. as to which company he was employed with. According to Krishnaiah, a vegetable trader, Udaya Kumar had called him up five days ago informing him that Sindhu had attempted suicide by hanging herself. He further said that she had been put on a ventilator in a hospital and was recovering. However, on February 10, Udaya Kumar called up to say that Sindhu had died.
Krishnaiah said when he contacted Udaya Kumar’s parents, who live at Kukatpally in Hyderabad, they too initially tried to convince him that Sindhu was recovering. However, their phones were switched off since February 10 once the news of her death came out. Krishnaiah alleged that Udaya Kumar used to frequently beat up Sindhu for more dowry, but, she was stated to have told her parents that she would adjust somehow. “I asked her to come back. But, she did not listen. Now she lost her life. I want the authorities to book a case and hand over the body to me,” Krishnaiah said. Holding Udaya Kumar’s parents also responsible for his daughter’s death, Krishnaiah demanded that the authorities seize their passports and initiate stringent action against them.

TLANTA, GA -- A worker with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was arrested at HartsfieldJackson International Airport last week for having a gun in a carry-on bag. It has been a turbulent last month for the airport, not with the planes, but with the security to keep them safe. The latest incident happened on January 14 on a flight from Atlanta to New York, when an FAA employee was caught with a weapon in his carry-on bag. The incident comes just weeks after a major gun smuggling ring was broken up in Atlanta involving past and present airline workers. Investigators said they were running guns from Atlanta to New York City. According to the Transportation Security Administration, the FAA would stand down the program while it conducted improved training for all its inspectors. “The agency will also require inspectors to sign a new agreement that details each inspector’s responsibility, and clearly states that any infraction related to a weapon will result in an immediate and permanent suspension of privileges and possible further disciplinary action.”

NCASVILLE (CT) -- A 28-year-old Manchester man has been arrested on charges of threatening and terrorism after he phoned in a bomb threat to Mohegan Sun casino, using the name of The Islamic State group. The police arrested Gary L. Kalinsky last week in connection with a call on November 18 to an unlisted number for lost items. An arrest warrant says the caller claims he is the front of IS and a lost briefcase contained a bomb and could explode in minutes. No briefcase was found. The police identified Kalinsky’s number because he called a day or two earlier to report a missing jacket but the man denied making a threatening call. He’s represented by a public defender and is due to appear on January 28 in the Norwich Superior Court
Many Indian channels off from Chitram TV app
I
BY A STAFF WRITER
n a major breakthrough, sending a strong message to organised pirates of content in the digital space, certain members of Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) have succeeded in their efforts to remove their channels from recently launched android and ios applications of ‘Chitram TV’ on Google and Apple play stores. Chitram TV is an IPTV/OTT service provider which has been illegally broadcasting the signals of the Indian origin channels Zee, MSM (Sony), Star and Viacom and certain other regional Indian television networks which are members of IBF) for quite some time. Recently Chitram TV launched its mobile application on android and ios devices in an attempt to widen its distribution and reach. The broadcasters took up the issue of Chitram’s illegal broadcast and Apple and Google have now removed these channels from their ios and Android platforms.
This is a major victory for the members of IBF in their fight against online piracy. These Indian broadcasters, who have joined hands to collectively fight digital piracy, are considering initiating legal proceedings against Chitram TV and other pirate platforms in multiple jurisdictions outside. None of the members of IBF (viz. Zee, MSM (Sony), Star and Viacom) has authorised Chitram TV to carry their channels on any media platform let alone digital. IBF understands that Chitram TV continues to
distribute the Indian channels via IPTV/OTT particularly outside India. IBF members have buckled up to fight the pirates like Chitram TV to preserve the integrity of their channels and content. With the rapid advent of technology enabling the dissemination of content across digital platforms, there are enormous revenue opportunities for broadcasters and other content owners. The Indian channels which are available in more than 100 countries around the world are extremely popular amongst the South Asian diaspora. All of these channels have launched their own digital platforms and mobile apps but piracy has been a major stumbling block in revenue monetisation. Isolated efforts of the broadcasters could have achieved little. Now that the Indian broadcasters stand united in their fight against digital piracy, their efforts will provide a greater impetus in the global effort to combat digital piracy.

WVA TRAIN DERAILMENT SENDS CRUDE OIL TANKER INTO RIVER BY A STAFF WRITER
M
OUNT CARBON, W VA -A train carrying more than 100 tankers of crude oil derailed in southern West Virginia on February 16, sending at least one into the Kanawha River, igniting 14 tankers and sparking a house fire. Nearby residents were told to evacuate as a state emergency response and environmental officials headed to the scene about 30 miles southeast of Charleston. The state was under a winter storm warning and getting heavy snowfall at times, with as much as 5 inches in some places. It’s not clear if the weather had anything to do with the derailment, which occurred about 1:20 EST along a flat stretch of rail. Public Safety spokesman Lawrence Messina said responders at the scene reported one tanker and possibly another went into the river. Messina said local emergency responders were having
trouble getting to the house that caught fire. James Bennett, 911 coordinator for Fayette County, said he knew of no injuries related to the house fire or subsequent tanker fires. He said 200 families were evacuated as a precaution. The rail company acknowledged the derailment on its Twitter page. “A CSX train derailed in Mount Carbon, WV,” the company tweeted. “We are working with first responders
on the scene to ensure the safety of the community.” The fire continued burning along a hillside in the evening, and small fires could be seen on the river. David McClung said he felt the heat from one of the explosions at his home about a half mile up the hill. His brother-in-law was outside at the time of the derailment and heard a loud crack below along the riverfront, then went inside to summon McClung, his wife and their son. One of the explosions that followed sent a fireball at least 300 feet into the air, McClung said. “We felt the heat, I can tell you that,” McClung said. “It was a little scary. It was like an atomic bomb went off.” The office of Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, which has issued a state of emergency, said the tanker cars were loaded with Bakken crude from North Dakota and headed to Yorktown, Va.
Local emergency officials said all but two of the 109 cars being hauled were tanker cars. West Virginia American Water spokeswoman Laura Jordan said the company shut down a water treatment plant, located about 3 miles from the derailment, at about 2:30 pm. The plant serves about 2,000 customers. State health officials said another water plant downstream in the town of Cedar Grove also closed its intake. They asked customers from both water systems to conserve water. The US Transportation Department is weighing tougher safety regulations for rail shipments of crude, which can ignite and result in huge fireballs. Responding to a series of fiery train crashes, including one this spring in Lynchburg, Va., the government proposed rules in July that would phase out tens of thousands of older tank cars that carry increasing quantities of crude oil and other highly flammable liquids.
Hindus want yoga in all public and private schools in US BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EW YORK -- Hindus have urged educational administrators to introduce yoga in all public and private schools of the US. Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada, stressed that incorporating yoga in the lives of the students would be a step in the positive direction. Zed, president of Universal Society of Hinduism, said a nationwide survey by National Institutes of Health (NIH), nation’s medical research agency and component of US Department of Health, had revealed that more Americans of all ages were rolling out their yoga mats for improving their health and some 21 million adults and 1.7 million children practiced yoga. The NIH survey results released on February 10 mention of “significant increase in
the use of yoga” across all age, racial, and ethnic groups. “The high rates of use may be partly

manage pain and reduce stress”, survey results release added. Rajan Zed further said that yoga, although introduced and nourished by Hinduism, was a world heritage and liberation powerhouse to be utilized by all. According to Patanjali who codified it in Yoga Sutra, yoga was a methodical effort to attain perfection, through the control of the different elements of human nature, physical and psychical. Yoga, referred as “a living fossil”, was a mental and physical discipline, for everybody to share and benefit from, whose traces went back to Indus Valley civilization, Zed pointed out. “Yoga may have health benefits such as reducing stress and improving overall physical fitness, strength, and flexibility”, NIH notes. Yoga is the repository of something basic in the human soul and psyche, Rajan Zed adds.

Motika Anand coordinated the whole event along with Minhaj Akhtar and Ajeet Singh, treasurer, FIA and
Fire at Houston Islamic center BY A STAFF WRITER
H
OUSTON, TX- As inspectors continue to probe the cause of a fire at an Islamic center in Houston, reports have emerged that an accelerant was used in the blaze. According to the Houston Fire Department, an accelerant was used, which usually means the fire was intentionally set. Ahsan Zahid, assistant Imam at the center, said that investigators had two working theories for why and how the fire was started. It was either sparked by someone who wanted to damage the facility, or it was started by a homeless person who broke in to the building to escape the cold. Officials from the Council on American-Islamic Relations opined that the incident should be investigated as a hate crime. The destroyed building was used as a storage facility and no one was hurt in the blaze. Earlier in the week, an unknown masked man had been chased off the property.
Theater cash looted BY A STAFF WRITER
M
ADISON- WI – A man who robbed a west side movie theater fled with cash, according to the Madison
police. The officers, who reached Market Square Theaters at 6604 Odana Rd. in the evening on February 12, said the man kept a hand in his pocket, making it appear he might have a gun. He demanded cash from the till at the ticket window and left running. The robber is described as black, 6 feet 2 inches to 6 feet 3 inches tall with a medium build and a round face. He was wearing a black vest over a gray hooded sweatshirt and black pants.
AAP supporters gathered in Chicago to hail the party’s landslide victory in Delhi polls other Chicago volunteers. She thanked all the volunteers for their contribution in the election. The Chicago Chapter had adopted Kirari Constituency in Delhi. The candidate has won by the margin
of 45,000 votes. Shalini Gupta, global NRI coordinator, said: “The results are very encouraging and NRI will continue to support the party and will also make sure that the party continues
to follow the path of clean politics and transparency”. She also said the ball is in our court now to perform and prove our genuine intentions. Dr Munish Raizada, a Chicago resident who has worked on ground for a long time until last year told about the months of ground hard work had helped the party to gain the huge support from Delhi voters. AAP MLAs had implemented various projects using MLA fund, through Delhi dialogues and Jansabhas. This had created a personal connection with Delhi people which reflected in the results. There were many supporters from the AAP Sikh Community. Silverstein throws light on her concrete vision BY A STAFF WRITER Chicago, IL -- Business owners and residents from the 50th ward were impressed by Alderman Debra Silverstein’s many accomplishments and strong record in bringing real and lasting progress to the locality at the West Ridge Chamber of Commerce debate on February 11. Reeling out statistics and listing her achievements, she left her opponent speechless and proved that she was the only candidate with a concrete vision for the 50th ward. Alderman Silverstein highlighted the $15-million streetscape on Devon Avenue that, she said, would attract new businesses, more shoppers and more people to come and live in the ward. She also discussed her record in bringing new businesses to the ward, including Cermak Fresh Market, Ross Dress for Less, Starbucks, Chase Banks, Petco, Lickety Split Frozen Custard, and many more. Also showcased at the debate was her strong record on fighting crime, a key concern of her constituents. Alderman Silverstein even corrected the record and rebutted the baseless claims made by her opponent who accused her of voting against utilizing TIF surplus money for our
Alderman Debra Silverstein public schools. She rightly pointed that she was a co-sponsor of the legislation. Her opponent also claimed that Alderman Silverstein voted to institute the red light camera program, which she pointed out was well in place before she took office (program began in 2003). She highlighted the increased safety measures the program has brought about, but discussed the need for continued investigation on how we can make the cameras work better. Her opponent also failed to mention that in a previous debate he supported the red light cameras in the neighborhood and would not
remove any of them. Her opponent also claimed Alderman Silverstein voted to cut half of the city’s mental health clinics. But she explained that the vote actually consolidated the city’s mental health services that were previously being underutilized and wasting taxpayer money. While there is still more work to do, the city’s mental health facilities are now moving in the right direction and there is hope for additional funding in the near future. Alderman Silverstein laid out her vision to build a stronger 50th ward and highlighted the steps she has taken thus far to bring new businesses, reduce crime and create the strongest constituent service office in the city. Her opponent presented no plan as to how we would bring new businesses to the ward other than setting up a 5-K run for the neighborhood. Throughout the debate, he made several false claims that he knows not to be true but continues to try and attack the Alderman instead of laying out a concrete vision for the ward. Alderman Silverstein stated, “50th ward residents deserve an Alderman who has a plan and a clear record of results for bringing change to our community.”

ELECTION SPECIAL elections special
Kejri roars at Ramlila At swearing-in, new Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal vows to end corruption and ‘VIP culture’ from Delhi; seeks full statehood for the city, assures safety to women IANS, NEW DELHI
S
ounding more mature and pragmatic in his second innings, AAP leader and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal pledged to make Delhi India’s first corruption-free city and end “VIP culture” even as he warned his colleagues against “arrogance” after his party’s thumping election win. Addressing some 100,000 cheering supporters at the Ramlila Maidan after being sworn in, Kejriwal, 46, also sought the status of a full state for Delhi, saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi had too many issues to take care of and Delhi must be left to Delhiites. And the Aam Aadmi Party leader — sporting his party’s white cap with the words “Main hoon aam aadmi” (I am a common man) — reached out to his vanquished rivals, Kiran Bedi of the BJP and Ajay Maken of the Congress, saying he would consult both on how to develop Delhi. He called Bedi his “elder sister”. A few hours later, Kejriwal, sounding and looking unwell, drove to the Delhi Secretariat. In a first of its kind in the country, the AAP announced that Kejriwal will not hold any portfolio but only oversee the work of ministers and legislators. The decision makes his long-time confidant Manish Sisodia, 43, the most powerful minister.

“After our (earlier) 49 days in office, we have the confidence that we will finish off corruption in Delhi,” the 46-year-old Kejriwal said to loud cheers at the ground. “We have to make Delhi the first corruption-free city in India. We can do it.” And repeating the lines from his Ramlila Maidan speech of 2013, Kejriwal urged people to covertly record on their mobile phones demands for bribes by officials and send the recording to him. “We will take the strictest action,” he said,
triggering another approving roar. His government would also pass the Jan Lokpal bill. It was a sea of caps at the sprawling ground in the heart of the capital. Hundreds who couldn’t get in packed the roads as well as balconies and rooftops of nearby buildings. There was unending slogan shouting. People came not only from Delhi but other states too. The huge gathering went wild as Kejriwal took the oath of office from Lt Governor Najeeb Jung — followed by six ministers — and then
spoke in Hindi. Besides Sisodia, the deputy chief minister, the other ministers are Satyendra Jain, Sandeep Kumar, Gopal Rai, Asim Ahmed Khan and Jitendra Singh Tomar. Speaking from his heart, Kejriwal admitted that the AAP’s decision to contest the 2014 Lok Sabha election — he himself took on Modi in Varanasi and lost — was a blunder. The AAP won 67 of the 70 seats, leaving three to the BJP. “I know people of Delhi love us. But I didn’t know they love us so much.” Calling
the result a “miracle”, he said God was trying to convey a message. “We have to understand the message.” Like last time, Kejriwal announced a ban on what he called VIP culture, including red beacon lights on official vehicles and strutting around in public places with a phalanx of security. He said Indians wanted a society where political leaders would also travel in buses like in many European countries. The former income tax officer and a Magsaysay award winner decried statements by AAP colleagues that after the Delhi victory, the party would expand to other states. This, he said, smacked of arrogance. He said that although Delhi Police didn’t come under his control, his government would make Delhi a secure city for people of all religions and communities. On his very first working day on february 16, Kejriwal tasked the finance and power departments with preparing proposals to halve power rates and provide free supply of water, up to 20,000 liters per month, to every household — his two key poll promises. Kejriwal asked the officials of these departments to send their proposals to slash power tariff by 50 percent till the audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of the private power companies is completed.
No demolition in Delhi AAP volunteers hope party till policy review will spread across the country NEW DELHI : Residential houses and shanties in the capital will not be razed till the new AAP government reviews the demolition policy, it was announced Monday. The decision comes a day after a group of around 20 slum dwellers protested outside Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s house in Uttar Pradesh over demolition of their shanties. “The government has issued directions to all the civic agencies, the Delhi Jal Board, the environment and forests and revenue departments, among others, not to carry out any demolition till this review is completed,” said a government official. Delhi has some 1.8 million slum dwellers. In case any demolition has already

been planned or is in the pipeline, the agency concerned shall seek prior approval of the urban development minister. This order will not apply to action taken in pursuance of court orders. The government intends to complete this review at the earliest, the official added.
nuj Bansal’s work at the AAP office here involves answering telephonic queries regarding donations to the party and overseeing collection of cheques from donors across Delhi. He has also been answering numerous calls from all over the country on when the Aam Aadmi Party will open a unit in their state. “This has become an added responsibility now,” said a visibly pleased Bansal. “Everyone wants to know when they can see an AAP office in their city or state,” the enthusiastic 23year-old told IANS. “I give everyone a standard reply: ‘We will come if you invite us’.” After a pause, Bansal, who is from Delhi, added: “It is remarkable how the AAP magic has spread to all

parts of the country.” AAP has no immediate plans of spreading its wings outside Delhi. Its leaders remember the disaster that followed the decision to contest over 400 Lok Sabha seats last year. But this does not mean the AAP will remain Delhi-centric. At some
point, the party, confident that it can occupy the Left-of-centre space increasingly vacated by the Congress, will venture to new states, maybe beginning with Punjab. AAP volunteers from all parts of India have already established toeholds in their own towns and cities.

B’wood beauties back Jabong Online Fashion Week A number of Bollywood divas spruce up the glamour quotient at the preview of the second season of Jabong Online Fashion Week IANS, NEW DELHI
A
ctresses Neha Dhupia, Kalki Koechlin and Esha Gupta along with actor Kay Kay Menon and supermodel Carol Gracias spruced up the Bollywood quotient at the preview of the second season of Jabong Online Fashion Week (JOFW), aimed at providing a platform to budding talent. The exclusive preview, which took place here at The Grand this week, witnessed the actors walking the ramp for various designers. Kay Kay, who flaunted a creation by designer Rahul Singh, looked dapper in a cream coloured traditional kurta-pyjama. He completed his look with a golden jacket and a jooti, and lauded the “wonderful effort” of providing a platform to young talent. Former Femina Miss India title holder Neha looked ravishing in a quirky colourful Poonam Bhagat dress, and she too was appreciative of JOFW, “which encourages new talent”. Another big screen diva on the ramp was Esha, who came into limelight with 2012 film Jannat 2. She was seen flaunting a pink coloured gown by designer Jaya Misra. The Delhi-born beauty, who donned a simple yet effective look for the event, told IANS that the fact that JOFW is an online event, “gives talents a larger scale to reach out to people”. “With this effort, every designer will get a chance to open his own store (literally),” she added. There was also Kalki Koechlin, who sashayed down the ramp in an ensemble by Niharika Pandey. Apart from them, the second season also featured young designerss including Aesthetical Cubes, Sougat Paul, Nitya Bajaj, Preeti S Kapoor, Niket Mishra, Kanika Goel, Sonia Jetleey and Siddartha Tytler. During the event, the springsummer 2015 collection of Britain-based high street brand, Dorothy Perkins was also showcased. The idea behind JOFW is to provide a platform to the budding designers. “Our brand stands for fashion. It was an effort to bring the fashion property online, where it can be showcased to the whole Indian market at a single place,” Praveen Sinha, managing director and founder, Jabong.com said.
Hair woes? Resort to natural solution NEW DELHI: Plagued by problems like hair loss and greying, most young women’s crowning glory is no longer their hair. According to a random survey by IANS, hair loss, dandruff, greying and split ends top the list of hair problems faced by women in their 20s. Beauty and hair expert Shahnaz Husain suggests including oil in your beauty regime for luscious locks. She says oiling the hair once a week a night before washing it off is a good idea, and using olive or pure coconut oil are conducive for healthy hair. A tip — try not to vigorously massage your head as in case of hair loss, the roots are already weak. “Use only fingertips and move the scalp in small rotary movements. If the hair is dry, shampoo twice a week. Those with oily hair should avoid oil applications and shampoo three or four times a week. But use less shampoo. Dilute it with water and then apply,” said Husain, who also advises to keep dandruff in check as it is one of the reasons for hair loss. But you can’t battle dandruff if you don’t know its root cause! Sachin Dhawan, Dermatologist, Fortis Memo-
rial Research Institute (FMRI), explains what leads to dandruff. “Dandruff is caused by malessezia yeasts naturally growing on the scalp. It happens more on oily scalps and due to hard water. Dry allergic dandruff happens due to shampoo allergies and use of hot water. “Natural ways to treat dandruff include using apple cider vinegar mixed with water to wash off and using a mix of lemon and hung curd as a hair pack for 20 minutes,” he says.
Dating app that sparks up intelligent conversation
IANS, NEW YORK
A
t a loss of words on your first date? You won’t be, thanks to a new dating app that sparks conversation. The new app, called Willow, is seeking a different approach. Instead of swiping left or right based on the first selfie you see, you’re prompted to answer a set of three questions — written by users — that are designed to spark up a conversation. What’s more, users decide when and if they wish to share photos with other users; at first, the answers to these questions are all that future dates see. The app’s founder Michael Bruch, 24, an alumnus of the New York University, was reported as say-
ing that he wanted to fill a void he noticed when using dating apps that focused on swipes rather than what you like. “You can match with a bunch of people that you think are good looking but you don’t really know much about them until you start talking to them,” Bruch was quoted as saying by TIME. In other dating apps like Tinder, Bumble and OkCupid potential mates usually judge one another based on looks. “If I’m going to spend time with someone I want to know that we have something to talk about - that’s what’s important to me,” Bruch added. So far, Willow’s beta version has been downloaded by over 100,000 users.
