irdman, a satirical tale of an ageing movie star attempting to reinvent himself via Broadway, clinched key honors on February 22 night at the 87th Academy Awards, where India had a no show this time around. Birdman, which was nominated in nine categories, picked up four honors — Best Picture, Best Director (Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu), Best Writing (Original Screenplay) and Best Cinematography — at the gala, which saw a melange of Hollywood stars come together to celebrate cinema. Another big winner was The Grand Budapest Hotel, which tied with Birdman for four awards. The Wes Anderson-directorial won Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score)and Production Design. One of the season’s favorites — Boyhood — could manage just one Oscar for Patricia Arquette. She secured the Best Supporting Actress award — and delivered a fitting acceptance speech, demanding equal pay for women. In response, veteran actress Meryl Streep stood up and cheered at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater. The Imitation Game went back home with only one award for Gra->>PAGE 14 ham Moore’s adapted screenplay. Obama committed to closer relations Two countries to work together in a way that benefits the economies and job creation in both countries

Online grievance redressal launched for overseas Indians NEW DELHI: The central government on February 21 launched an online consular grievance system to help the overseas Indians in getting their problems redressed in a timebound manner. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj launched the MADAD — help or Online Consular Grievances System — for registering complaints of overseas Indians facing various problems. Such problems would now be addressed by the India Missions abroad in a time-bound manner. A result of the joint efforts of the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) and the External Affairs Ministry (MEA), Swaraj said, it will now enable overseas Indians not just to register their complaints online but also track its movement among the officials tackling it. The overseas Indians could send their complaints in writing, which would be put online by the mission officials. Land bill

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal joins Anna Hazare in slamming the “anti-farmer” legislation; Modi asks BJP MPs to strongly defend the bill IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he NDA government faced strident criticism over the land acquisition bill introduced in the Lok Sabha on February 24, with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal joining Anna Hazare in slamming the “anti-farmer” legislation and demanding its withdrawal. Addressing a crowd of protestors, Kejriwal said: “We will use all our

force to ensure that land is not taken away forcibly from anyone in Delhi.” Though Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked BJP MPs to strongly defend the bill, the government appeared ready to listen to concerns of farmers. The Rajya Sabha witnessed a ruckus as opposition members demanded a discussion on the bill, leading to suspension of business of the house.

In a related development, farmer leaders from across the country met Home Minister Rajnath Singh to voice their concerns over the land acquisition ordinance, which was promulgated by the Narendra Modi government on December 30 last year. The farmer leaders presented their demands to Singh, and asked

the government to keep the land acquisition process “simple and farmer-friendly”. Parliament was witness to noisy scenes over the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Bill 2015, introduced in the lower

he BJP was poised to create history, getting a partnership role in governing Jammu and Kashmir for the first time as it announced a coalition with the PDP after both arrived at an “agreement on a common minimum program” to govern the state. Peoples Democratic Party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed will be sworn in as the chief minister on March 1. BJP president Amit Shah announced on February 24 that both parties had arrived at an agreement for a coalition government. Mehbooba Mufti said the new government will work in the

national interest, ensuring that the people of Jammu and Kashmir get a clean, corruption-free rule. “Fortunately we have reached an understanding. The agenda of this alliance is to win the hearts and minds of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” she said. The agreement was hammered out after weeks of negotiations, though the two parties have differing ideologies on sensitive subjects like Article 370 on the state’s special status and the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. NEW DELHI: The Delhi government on February 25 announced 50 percent slash in power tariff up to 400 units and 20,000 liters of free water per household per month. The rates will come into effect from March 1, announced Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia here after a cabinet meeting. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had promised during his election campaign to halve the power tariff. He had halved power tariff during his 49-day stint in 2013.

Pachauri, who is also the directorgeneral of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), has been accused of sexually harassing a woman researcher there and Delhi police has filed a report and is conducting an investigation. Citing several texts, emails, and WhatsApp messages as evidence to prove the claim of sexual harassment, the complainant accused the scientist of harassing her soon after she joined the Delhi-based environment thinktank in September 2013.

How Indian old man was assaulted WASHINGTON: The lawyer of an Indian grandfather who was assaulted by an Alabama police officer leaving him partially paralysed has in an amended lawsuit detailed how his repeated attempts to explain went in vain. The amended civil rights lawsuit filed in federal court last week sought unspecified compensatory and punitive damages for the February 6 assault on Sureshbhai Patel, 57, while he was taking a walk in front of his son Chirag Patel’s house in a Madison suburb. The initial complaint, filed on February 12 by Patel’s lawyer, Hank Sherrod, named Madison city and two at-that-time unidentified officers, John Doe and Jim Smith, as defendants. It has dropped the charges against a second police officer, a trainee, and no longer accuses the department of making up the emergency call or hiding the dash cam. Parker was arrested for assault after Madison Police released an audio of the call and the dash cam video that showed Parker taking Patel down. The lawsuit accuses the officer of illegal seizure, unlawful search, excessive force, false arrest and assault and battery. According to the lawsuit, Patel had arrived in the U.S. only days before to assist his son and daughter-in-law in caring for their 17-month-old son, who was developmentally delayed after a premature birth. Giving the circumstances of the case leading to the assault, the lawsuit says, “Patel dressed for the walk in plain pants, a button shirt, a

sweater, and a knit cap.” “He had nothing in his pants except for a green patterned handkerchief that was later used by officers to wipe blood from Patel’s face.” On the morning of February 6, “Patel walked the same path he had walked on other mornings since arriving in the United States, straight down Hardiman Place Lane, the street on which his son lived, and back.” Patel’s prior morning walks were without incident, but that morning a “neighbor called the Madison Police Department and reported Patel as a suspicious person.” “Parker and his trainee parked their patrol car, approached Patel, and ordered him to stop.” Patel told the officers “no English,” “Indian,” “walking,” and pointed down the street and said “house number [actual number],” as he continued to attempt to explain the situation to the officers.

Eventually, he said, he foresaw variations, such as adding a second gene to the minicircles.

The SOHR added that 14 IS fighters were killed by the U.S.-led anti-terror coalition in the southern countryside of al-Qamishly province in northern Syria. The IS repeatedly attacked minority groups across Syria and most recently in Libya, where the Sunni radical group abducted and executed over 20 Egyptian Coptic Christians, branding them the “worshippers of the cross”. Syria’s oil-rich eastern region has been a key battleground in the fight against the militant group.

IS serious threat to Pakistan: Minister ISLAMABAD: Shortly after Pakistan Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan denied the presence of the Islamic State (IS) in South Asia, particularly Pakistan, Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry has said the militant group poses a serious threat to the country. “The government is on alert to the IS threat in the region,” Chaudhry said while briefing the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs Monday, Pakistan Today reported on February 24. He said the government has directed all authorities concerned to ensure that no organization or individual gets in contact with the IS in the country. A bipartisan parliamentary panel discussed the potential threat posed by the IS to Pakistan amid reports that the ruthless militant outfit was seeking a foothold in the country. However, Chaudhry clarified Pakistan has no desire to become part of the international coalition against IS. The government has long denied the presence of the militant group in the country. “As of now, I can say with confidence that the IS only exists in the Middle East,” Nisar said while speaking at the US Institute of Peace in Washington. “It absolutely has no presence in Afghanistan and Pakistan.” He said that the terrorist space in South Asia was totally occupied, however, if the issues were not addressed, a grand alliance between different groups could not be ruled out in future.

Kano is about 360 km from Potiskum, the main commercial hub in Yobe state. Boko Haram now controls vast swathes of northeast Nigeria and has displaced more than three million people.

India “ overpower South Africa at the MCG

Congratulations on your second victory in ICC World Cup 2015; the first ever win against S. Africa in World Cup matches — President Mukherjee Great performance. Well played. Congrats Team India. You make us proud yet again — PM Narendra Modi

VETURI SRIVATSA, NEW DELHI

I

t is natural to go ga-ga over India’s victory over South Africa at the MCG on February 22 — because this is the first time they have beaten the Proteas in a World Cup match after losing at all their three previous meetings. Yet, to disprove the critics, India have done everything they looked incapable of doing just a month ago. They batted beautifully, bowled purposefully and were amazingly athletic in the field. Otherwise it is well nigh impossible to beat the Proteas by 130 runs and that too in a key World Cup game that may as well decide who tops the group. To win back-to-back matches so convincingly is no joke and the Indians kept up the momentum so well. Playing Pakistan drains an Indian team and then to be taking on South Africa can be further demanding. The big revelation was the way the fast bowlers fielded. First, Shami took a splendidly well-judged catch on the boundary off Mohit Sharma who also got topscorer Faf du Plessis to make sure the South Africans have no pretensions of a late fightback. Then the turning point in the

Shikhar Dhawan scored 137 runs

match when Mohit’s brilliant throw from the outfield ran AB de Villiers out. The pick up and release of the ball was so quick and precise that MS Dhoni had to just give the finishing touch. As if that’s not enough, Umesh Yadav showed the strength of his throwing arm to get rid of another dangerous batsman David Miller, who had bailed the side out along with JP

hris Gayle’s whirlwind 215 quite simply handed the West Indies their second win of the World Cup when they defeated Zimbabwe in a Pool B encounter at the Manuka Oval here on February 24. Powered by the first World Cup double-hundred from Gayle, the West Indies zoomed to 372/2 in their 50 overs in reply to which Zimbabwe were bowled out for 289 in 44.3 overs while chasing a revised target of 363 from 48 overs after a rain delay. Records tumbled as the Jamaican southpaw finally struck form to score his 22nd One-Day International (ODI) century and his first double-hundred. The previous best World Cup individ-

Duminy against Zimbabwe — both scoring hundreds. The two runouts effected by the two pace bowlers shows that the Indian fielding has gone up by a notch or two and, as Dhoni said in his post-match comments, they made his life easy in implementing team plans and not worry about hiding slowcoaches. Not many may have noticed that all 10 Pakistani batsmen were out to catches at Adelaide. Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli continued their rebuilding work from the Pakistan match after Rohit Sharma was unlucky to be run out with de Villiers finding one stump to aim good enough. What’s pleasing about Rahane is that, like Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, he looks so graceful playing cricketing shots — not for him the ungainly slogging. Moreover, he looks as assured as Kohli at the wicket to calm the dressing room.

PCB calls back Moin Khan after casino row

Pak chief selector Moin Khan LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on February 24 launched an investigation against chief selector Moin Khan and has asked him to return home after he was reportedly seen in a Christchurch casino two days before his team’s encounter

against the West Indies, which Pakistan lost by 150 runs in the World Cup. He allegedly visited the casino with his wife at around 3 a.m. “While there are widespread allegations into the conduct of the chief selector having brought the image of Pakistan and PCB into disrepute, there is no concrete proof available to substantiate the allegations against Moin Khan,” PCB said in a statement. “PCB chairman Shaharyar M. Khan has ordered Moin to return back to Pakistan immediately to explain his position vis-a-vis his visit to the casino.” The statement added: “As a follow-up of yesterday’s decision to probe the matter of the visit of Chief Selector PCB to a casino in Christchurch, PCB has instituted an inquiry into the incident.”

In response, veteran actress Meryl Streep stood up and cheered at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater. The Imitation Game went back home with only one award for Graham Moore’s adapted screenplay. Even American Sniper managed just one win — sound editing. It was Eddie Redmayne’s victory for his performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything which turned out to be a highlight at the Oscars ceremony. our hero would shed his heroic skin as the plot progresses from being a human drama to a heist caper with a loot that is quite a hoot.

The confrontational drama between the hero Raghavan and the villain Laik gets a massive, nearmonumental fillip from the main actors. Varun Dhawan, a bit raw around the edges but nonetheless acutely effective as the grieving family-man, and Nawazuddin, flawlessly flamboyant as the sly villain who has willy-nilly destroyed the hero’s life, together confer an overpowering immediacy to the proceedings. But then, their collaborative might as the sinned and the sinner, begins to be dimmed by a digressive drama that impinges itself from the sidelines. The problem is with the structure. Depression among sophomores? Study blames it on cyberbullying BY A STAFF WRITER

N

EW YORK -- Involvement in cyberbullying increases the risk of depression in female college students--for both bullies and victims, says a study led by an Indian American researcher. What is worse is that the bullies are also likely to report problems of alcohol use, say the researchers in the study that appeared in the journal ‘Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking’. “Participants with any involvement in cyberbullying had increased odds of depression, and those involved in cyberbullying as bullies had increased odds of both depression and problems with alcohol use,” said Rajitha Kota from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. 11 students fall sick after drug overdose BY A STAFF WRITER

M

IDDLETOWN, CT- The police are investigating the source of a drug that sent at least 11 Wesleyan University students to area hospitals. Two of them were in serious condition and were flown to Hartford for treatment. School officials said on February 22 that the overdose symptoms seemed to point to the drug “Molly,” a party drug that is a form of MDMA or ecstasy. Middletown Police Chief William McKenna said his department was helping medical providers pursue information about the “bad batch” of the drug. The drug can vary radically in potency and can sharply drive up body temperature, which can lead to liver, kidney or cardiovascular failure, or death. “Our first and foremost goal is to obtain information on the batch of Molly that was distributed to the students on the campus,” McKenna said. “This information is critical in ensuring the recovery of those students affected.” The police received multiple calls for help in and around the Wesleyan campus for similar medical emergencies. It was unclear whether the students had been together.

Duke Energy faces criminal charges: coal ash pollution BY A STAFF WRITER

ALEIGH, NC -- Federal prosecutors have filed the first of what are expected to be several criminal charges against Duke Energy for illegal pollution from its coal ash dumps in North Carolina. The US Attorney’s Office in Raleigh has charged Duke with a felony count of the negligent discharge of pollutants in violation of the Clean Water Act. students, but less is known about cyberbullying among college students. This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between involvement in cyberbullying and depression or problematic

alcohol use among college females. For the study, 265 female students from four colleges completed online surveys assessing involvement in cyberbullying behaviors. Participants also completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 to assess depressive symptoms and the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test to assess drinking problems. The researchers found that more than one in four females experienced cyberbullying in college, increasing their risk for depression. Among the participants who had experienced cyberbullying, the most common behaviors reported were hacking into another person’s account, receiving unwanted sexual advances, being harassed by text messages, and posting of degrading comments. Those who had experienced unwanted sexual advances online or via text messages had a six-fold increase in the odds of depression, the findings showed.

ONNECTICUT -- A Connecticut dentist was charged with homicide a year after a patient flatlined in his chair while he attempted a marathon procedure to pull 20 of her teeth. Rashmi Patel turned himself into Enfield Police on February 17, a year to the day that 64-year-old Judith Gan died in his office. He was charged with criminally negligent homicide and tampering with evidence. Gan went to Patel’s clinic on February 17 last year to have 20 of her teeth removed. His assistants begged him to stop the dental work when her oxygen levels plummeted and she started gurgling, court records claimed. He failed to respond to her worsening condition and kept pulling teeth even when she lost consciousness. The assistants finally called 911, but Gan had already flatlined, the Department of Public Health said. She was pronounced dead at Bay State Medical Center in Springfield, Mass. Patel’s license, which was issued in 2003, was suspended in April. In December, the board banned him from treating patients under sedation. Patel was sued for malpractice in 2009

Man faces 25-yr jail for attack on Sikh youth

L

BY A STAFF WRITER

ONG ISLAND, NY -- A Long Island man was indicted on hate crime charges last week for allegedly calling a Sikh man “Osama” in Queens and running him over. Joseph Caleca, 55, of Setauket, is charged last summer with attempted murder and felony assault, both as hate crimes, in connection with the incident tht occurred on July 30 last. A Queens County grand jury returned an indictment against Caleca on February 18. “The defendant is accused of an unprovoked attack that allegedly began with the defendant driving by the victim and his friends and calling him a terrorist and ordering him to leave the country,” Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said in a news release. “After an exchange of words, the

defendant allegedly struck the victim intentionally with his vehicle and dragged him along the street.” Caleca was arraigned on the ninecount indictment. He was remanded on continuing bail afterward, and is next due in court April 22. Caleca could be sentenced to up to 25 years in prison if convicted. Caleca was behind the wheel of his pickup truck at 99th Street and 101st

Avenue in Ozone Park, Queens, when he got into a verbal argument with 29-yearold Sandeep Singh because Singh’s car door was blocking the street. The police said Caleca allegedly got out of his vehicle to confront Singh and his friends. Singh told the police that Caleca called him a terrorist and shouted “bin Laden, go back to your country” before mowing him down. Caleca dragged Singh several feet before fleeing the scene. “A man in a truck had called him a terrorist and told him to go back to his country,” the victim’s wife, Prabhurpreet Kaur, said earlier this month. “When Sandeep protested, the man ran him over, dragged him 30 feet under the truck and left him to die.” Singh was treated at Jamaica Hospital Center for abdominal and back injuries following the attack.

Hindu deities at New York museum BY A STAFF WRITER

NEW YORK -- The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) in New York is displaying “Earring for a Deity Showing Vishnu Riding Garuda” (17th19th century) in its “Sacred Traditions of the Himalayas” exhibition which will run till June 14. It is also showcasing 17th19th century “Dish for Ritual Offerings with Durga Defeating a Demon”, 17-19th century “Amulet case with Vishnu” and a scroll painting dated 1651 showing Kubera and Durga. Applauding Met for showcasing Hindu deities in an exhibition, distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada, said that art had a long and rich

tradition in Hinduism and ancient Sanskrit literature talked about religious paintings of deities on wood or cloth. Rajan Zed, who is president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, urged major art museums of the world, including Musee du Louvre and Musee d’Orsay of Paris, Los Angeles Getty Center, Uffizi Gallery of Florence (Italy), Art Institute of Chicago, Tate Modern of London, Prado Museum of Madrid, National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, etc., besides Met, to frequently organize Hindu artfocused exhibitions, thus sharing the rich Hindu art heritage with the rest of the world. The exhibition announcement says that this installation features devotional

Founded in 1870, Met, one of the top art museums of the world, has large collections of ancient art, including Greek, Roman and Near Eastern. The Met’s mission includes art that “collectively represent the broadest spectrum of human achievement”. Thomas P. Campbell is Met’s Director and CEO, while Daniel Brodsky is Trustees Chairman. Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents and moksh (liberation) is its ultimate goal. There are about three million Hindus in the US.

Severed hand, foot discovered along NYC’s shoreline BY A STAFF WRITER

N

EW YORK -- Three birdwatchers snapping photos along a New York City shoreline came upon a grisly discovery: a severed right hand lying palm up in the sand. They called 911 from Calvert Vaux Park in Brooklyn and officers with the New York City Police Department removed the decomposed hand. The police said the cleanly severed body part had been in the water “for a long period of time.” The discovery was made on January 4. The next day, officers returned to the scene with cadaver dogs and found a right foot beneath driftwood on the water’s edge, about 65 feet from where the hand was discovered. Authorities have not yet determined the identity of the victim.

TEENS PURSUE MEDICAL RESEARCH ON THEIR OWN

P

BY A STAFF WRITER

ORT HURON, MI -- Two area Indian American teens have moved beyond the traditional school science fair to pursue medical research on their own. A third high-school student from Troy with ties to the area joined them. Port Huron Northern students Medha Krishen, 15, and Ilena Krishen, 17, and Mary Jarad, 17, a student at Detroit Country Day, presented their research findings in October at the American Society of Chest Physicians in Austin, Texas. The girls were the only three high school students whose papers were accepted for presentation at the conference for doctors and fellows. Their mentor, Dr. Sridhar Reddy, said the girls were accepted to the conference on their own merit. “It isn’t because they are young,’’ he said. “It’s because the questions they are asking and answering are relevant medical questions.’’ Reddy has mentored students through his

Indian-owned store sells $1.4-m Powerball ticket

S

BY A STAFF WRITER

AN LEANDRO, CA -- A San Leandro, Calif. liquor store owned by an Indian American man sold the winning ticket of $1.4 million from a recent Powerball drawing and will receive a share of the prize money. Makhan Dabb’s Pop Top Market & Liquors sold the ticket to Powerball winner Hector Carrera. Dabb’s store located at 14817 East 14th St. will receive half a per cent, or $7,000, of the winning amount. Dabb recognized the owner of the winning Powerball ticket as a regular customer of his store, which he has owned for the past three years. He identified Carrera by viewing the store’s video after determining when the ticket was purchased. When the customer entered the store the next day, Dabb and his employee Satnam Singh broke the news about his win. Carrera was one of three people in California to win $1.4 million after choosing five of the six winning numbers. Three people--in Texas, South Carolina and Puerto Rico--who got all six numbers, will split the $500 million Powerball jackpot.

Atlanta cops on trail of Subway robbers BY A STAFF WRITER

TLANTA, GA -- Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for the arrests and indictments of two men accused of robbing a Subway. The suspects, oOne of them armed with a silver chrome pistol, hit the restaurant at 74 Northside Drive SW shortly before 9:30 pm on February 20. The police described one suspect as a black man, 20 to 30 years old, with a medium to dark complexion. He was about 5 feet 9 inches tall and 175 pounds, with a thin mustache and tattoos near his eyebrows. The second suspect was a black man, 21 to 30 years old, with a light complexion, medium build and mustache.

(L-R) Medha Krishen and Ilena Krishen medical office for the past ten years. “Whenever I find kids who are interested in science, technology, engineering and math, I encourage them to go to their full potential,’’ he said. Medha’s topic was about finding a new way to screen high-school athletes who are at risk of dying due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The

condition occurs in 1 in 500 people. Medha has been following the condition for the past three years after a close family friend died while out for a jog. Medha’s sister Ilena presented her method of early lung damage detection. She wanted at first to use the method to detect music frequencies. Two other factors influenced Ilena’s choice of project. “We’ve had a lot of smokers in our family. We had a death in the family due to lung disease. And I was also very interested in environmental issues, particularly air pollution,’’ she said. Ilena hit upon her project idea when she came across an electronic stethoscope at Reddy’s home. “He lent it to me to find out more about it,’’ she said. Ilena connected the stethoscope to a computer that was installed with a MATLAB program in order to run a frequency analysis. She used the lung sound once it was captured by the stethoscope:

“You just click on the file and save it as a .waz file. It shows up as an iTunes icon. I copied and pasted it into my program and it produced a graph and displayed the frequencies.’’ Ilena’s mother, Priya Krishen, said she “had no clue’’ how to help her daughter with the technology part of her project. “It involves a lot of statistics, physics, and how to write a software program. And it just so happens that it has medical relevance,’’ she said. It took Ilena seven to eight months to figure out how to work the technology before she could begin conducting research, her mother said. “There were a lot of physicians in town that told her she was not going to find anything,’’ she said. Ilena said she plans to bring her research results to less-developed countries where CAT scans or other methods are not as readily available. Mary Jarad presented her work at a conference in Munich, Germany, just prior to joining the Krishen sisters in Austin.

HICAGO, IL -- The Maharudram committee of the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago, Lemont, IL organized the “Rudra: Who Really is He? Part 2 All Day Shiva Event” at Sama Rathi auditorium on February 21. The temple is located at 10915 Lemont Road, Lemont, IL. The auditorium was fully packed with over 500 people. Well over 300 children showcased their talent with great enthusiasm and interest in this seven-hour event. The grand inauguration ceremony of the prelude series titled “Rudra: Who Really is He?” was on January 31. This is the prelude program to the main event “Maharudram and Navachandi Mahayagnam” to be held on June 12, 13, and 14. The prelude is a series of enlightening discourses and cultural presentations bringing out the spiritual symbolism of Mahayagnas and their contribution to

universal peace, welfare and prosperity. The All-Day Shiva Event started with the grand Girija Kalyanam, the celestial marriage of Shiva and Parvathi. The devotees enjoyed the sumptuous wedding feast from the Prasadam kitchen and were then treated with a variety of cultural programs presented by the students of various dance and music schools, including the members of a dance school who travelled from Iowa. Yo u n g s t u d e n t s o f re n ow n e d Bharatanatyam teachers, including Sushmita Arunkumar, Sangita Rangala, Vanitha Veeravalli, Pragnya Yogesh, Vidya Pandikaran, Hema Rajagopalan, Sowmya Kumaran, and Anupama Rajesh, presented various Bharathanatyam performances. The audience was mesmerized seeing the children in authentic costumes presented with perfect synchronization and confidence. Students of various music teachers, including Vasanthi Iyer, Maragatha Mani Sundaresan, Vaidehi Sudharshan, Subadra

Bharathanatyam performers from Nritya Geethanjali Ramasami, Shoba Shankar Jagadeesaiyer, and Saraswathi Ranganathan, presented various performances, including vocal music, instrumental ensemble, and devotional prayers. There were several thematic competitions like drawing, painting, essay writing and quiz programs for the children. Savitri Bala, Sangita Rangala, and Nagaveni Garimela conducted the final round of quiz on the stage in a very interesting format including visual clues, “lightning” rounds, and slideshow visible to the audience. It was amazing to watch young children answer questions on various topics centered on Hindu spirituality and the concept of the Supreme Consciousness. Dr. Sangita Rangala, a busy physician and director of Anand Dance Academy, was the Master of Ceremonies for the whole day and her enthusiasm was infectious. The evening session started with chanting of Sri Rudram by four young

UIC student charged with sexual assault BY A STAFF WRITER

C

HICAGO, IL -- A student l e a d e r o f Un i ve r s i t y o f Illinois at Chicago (UIC) has been charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old female student in what Cook County prosecutors say was a re-enactment of scenes from the film “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Freshman Mohammad Hossain, 19, appeared shocked after a Cook County judge set his bail at $500,000, walking back to the lockup with his mouth wide open. The judge was taken aback after Hossain’s lawyer, assistant Cook County public defender Sandra Bennewitz, said his client had been involved with several UIC leadership programs, was a student ambassador to the alumni association and was on the triathlon team. “Sandra, how can someone involved in all that let a movie persuade him to do something like this?” asked Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. “He would say that it was consensual,” she replied.

Mohammad Hossain Prosecutors said Hossain and the woman went to the former’s dorm room about 5:30 pm on February 21. The two had “previously been intimate” but were not dating, said Assistant State’s Attorney Sarah Karr. Once inside his dorm in the 900 block of West Harrison Street, Hossain allegedly unclothed the sophomore, bound her to

a bed with a belt, used another belt to bind her legs and stuffed a necktie into her mouth, Karr said. Hossain used a knit cap to cover the woman’s eyes, and began striking the woman with a belt even as she asked him to “stop, and began shaking her head and crying,” said Karr. According to an arrest report, she somehow managed to free herself but the accused held her arms behind her back and sexually assaulted her as she continued to plead for him to stop, according to Karr. Hossain even prevented a roommate him from entering the room as the woman left and told another person what happened, and then called the police. The police arrested Hossain later that night in another dorm building in the 700 block of South Halsted Street. He was quizzed by UIC detectives and, according to Karr, admitted assaulting the woman and “doing something wrong.” He allegedly told the police he and the woman were re-enacting scenes from “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

children. Revered Swamiji Ishatmanada, senior monk of Sri Ramakrishna order and Minister In-charge, Vivekananda Vedanta Society of Chicago, was the keynote speaker of the evening. He delivered an excellent speech titled “Shiva: The Great God” and brilliantly explained the concept of Shiva, the auspiciousness. Teachers and students who presented various performances received the blessings of Swamiji on the stage. Each student was presented with a certificate and a prize. The teachers were also honored by Swamiji and the Maharudram organizers. The speech was followed by a wonderful Bharatanatyam dance concert “Rudra: The One who Purifies” by Vinay Srinivasan Srinivasan was later honored by the president of the temple, Bhima Reddy, for such an awe-inspiring performance. Lakhshman Agadi, Chair of Maharudram Committee, gave the vote of thanks.

Five-vehicle crash at Oakton Street

S

BY A STAFF WRITER

CHAUMBURG, IL -- A Hoffman Estates woman was ticketed for allegedly causing a chain-reaction, five-vehicle accident along a stretch of Oakton Street dividing Park Ridge and Niles. Park Ridge Deputy Police Chief Lou Jogmen said witnesses reported that around 12:30 pm on February 14, a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan drove through a red light on eastbound Oakton Street at Prospect Avenue, colliding with a vehicle that was headed north on Prospect. The impact caused the Grand Caravan to flip onto its driver’s side and strike a car that was stopped for the red light on westbound Oakton, the police said. This car was then pushed into two other vehicles that were stopped in the curb lane of westbound Oakton Street. The driver of the Grand Caravan, 42-yearold Farrda Marabout, told the police that her brakes had failed. She was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash and cited for disobeying a red light and driving without insurance. One other driver reported a non-life threatening injury in the accident, but was not transported to a hospital by paramedics, Jogmen said.

Revealed: Astronauts’ exercise regime

Sleep loss could lead to weight gain NEW YORK: Following a night of total sleep deprivation, a brain region known as the “salience network” may lead us to eat more fat, new research has found. “Although this study examined the effects of acute total sleep deprivation, similar changes may occur in response to the chronic partial sleep

stronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) are not only working out to keep their hearts healthy but also to generate data to advance knowledge of health and fitness on Earth, a NASA research indicates. Researchers assessed exercise on longer spaceflights with the help of astronauts on the space station, measuring their oxygen consumption peak VO2 before, during and after missions of four to five months. Widely accepted as the best measure of cardiovascular fitness, VO2peak is a measure of peak oxygen uptake. The results showed that VO2peak decreased by an average of 17 percent by day 15 in space, but then gradually increased. Most astronauts never recovered their preflight V02peak levels during the mission but a few were able to main-

tain or even improve VO2peak during flight with frequent bouts of high-intensity exercise. Currently, each crew member is prescribed a two-hour daily workout using three pieces of equipment on the station. The data would also help predict what activities an astro-

restriction that is so prevalent in today’s society,” said study’s senior author Hengyi Rao from the University of Pennsylvania. The study involved 34 sleepdeprived participants and 12 controls in a sleep lab for five days and four nights for round-the-clock monitoring. Sleep deprived participants consumed close to 1,000 calories during overnight wakefulness. However, when comparing the macronutrient intake, researchers found that healthy adults consumed a greater percentage of calories from fat and a lower percentage of calories from carbohydrates during the day following total sleep deprivation.

naut should be able to tolerate after a long spaceflight. This would help in planning future missions. Astronauts with higher VO2peak levels, for example, would be better able to work in heavy spacesuits exploring an asteroid or walking around Mars.

Soon, a birth control pill for men IANS, NEW YORK

F

or men who resent wearing condoms, a new nonintrusive solution is on the anvil — a birth control pill. At least two projects are in the pipeline for choking male fertility. One is H2-gamendazole that makes sperms go half-cooked. Normally, premature sperm cells grow a tail and

head in the testis, but H2-gamendazole keeps them from reaching this stage of development. “If there’s no sperm, the egg’s not going to get fertilized,” said Joseph Tash, a reproductive biologist at the University of Kansas’ Medical Centre in the US. Tash has worked on the compound since 2001. The other potential compound is

‘If there’s no sperm, the egg’s not going to get fertilized’

Your week ahead... Aries You are creating your own best future now, with substantial breakthroughs involving the world of children and young adults in March, and June. You like instant results but even if instant gratification is not possible, rewards are within sight.

Taurus You have recently enjoyed a couple of decent high points involving your house, family, flat, household, home town or homeland. Now you can build on what you have gained, or perhaps take a different direction.

Gemini You can either move an existing project or role forward near Friday, or take on something new. Even though Jupiter is not yet in direct motion, there is a lot to be said for planning and planting for a harvest some time near your birthday.

Cancer Your horoscope is being kind to you now, by allowing each change to come in waves, rather than in tsunami. By April you will be in a far more independent position. Take each chance you get to move towards this, especially this week.

Leo You are fortunate to be in the luckiest cycle for showmanship and personal advertising in 12 years. Whatever comes your way near Friday, do use it, as it is the gift that goes on giving, Leo.

Virgo You have more to gain from keeping a low profile and allowing others to be the name or face. You will have your place in the sun after August, when Jupiter enters Virgo for the first time in 12 years.

JQ1 that can trick the body into forgetting how to make sperm! JQ1 was found blocking bromodomain proteins in cancer cells by Jay Bradner and his team at Harvard’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The uncontrolled division of the abnormal cells ceased due to it. JQ1 also obstructed a testicle-specific bromodomain called BRDT, making the sex cells that would otherwise produce sperms draw a blank about their own behavior. Mice treated with JQ1 can copulate with abandon yet produce zero offsprings.

(January 12-18) Libra If your energy is better suited to entirely new group or social involvements, you will not need your arm twisted when one of the month’s more enticing opportunities comes your way near Friday.

Scorpio Success at the moment depends on willingness to succeed, at the highest levels. There is no question of clambering up the mountain. Jupiter is showing you one path after another and all you have to do is what comes naturally.

Sagittarius This is certainly no time to think small as an important regional or foreign connection is revealed near Friday, and you must pursue what comes so naturally and easily with this person, organization or pin on the map.

Capricorn The motto this Friday just has to be ‘Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth’ and this particular horse has been a long time coming. You stand to gain from others’ money, property, possessions, business interests or other resources.

Aquarius You two can go further together than you ever could alone, and although Aquarians are well-known for their friendships and group involvements, it is actually the duet or double-act which best suits your personality at the moment.

Pisces An aspect of your working life which offers you a true sense of meaningful duty and rewarding service, is opening doors for you. Perhaps the doors are familiar – maybe they are very new – but do go through them. —Jessica Adams

T

he fifth edition of the 21 Gun Salute International Vintage Car Rally and Concourse Auto Show left many onlookers spellbound in the capital on February 21 as they watched 201 cars and 50 vintage bikes participating in the event. A procession of Rolls Royce Tourer, Buick special series, Cadillac Convertible, Rover 8, Ford and many other restored models left many vintage car lovers overwhelmed at the flag off of the car

rally and auto show at the Red Fort. The event was organised by Madan Mohan, the director of the 21 Gun Salute, in association with the Heritage Motoring Club of India (HMCI). The cars including the original models from Stower, Morris, Lincoln, Bentley Mark and Daimler Sports Coupe were selected from over 3,500 vintage cars to take part in the rally. The dignitaries on the occasion included K.T.S. Tulsi, president, HMCI, Nitin Dossa, Douglas Fox, Secretary Malaysia Singapore Vin-

Interestingly, the cars — including the original models from Stower, Morris, Lincoln, Bentley Mark and Daimler Sports Coupe — were selected from over 3,500 vintage cars to take part in the rally “The vision of the event is to place India at the global tourism map as the most attractive country when it comes to vintage cars and

cars in India,” Madan Mohan told reporters during the flag off. While showcasing the rich automotive heritage to the world, the

rally also highlighted the social issue of “Save the Girl Child”. A percentage of the proceedings from the event will be given for the welfare and education of the girl child, the organisers said. The rally began from the historic Red Fort in Old Delhi in the morning. Passing through the capital’s main attractions like Rajghat, Teen Murti Marg and the National Art Gallery, it culminated at noon at Gurgaon’s Leisure Valley Park. On Februray 22, the vintage cars went around Gurgaon city as part of the two-day rally.

How to enjoy food like sexual pleasure IANS, NEW YORK

N Prepare your skin with aromatherapy before Holi NEW DELHI: Holi, the festival of colors is just a few days away, so indulge in aromatherapy to prepare your skin. Naresh Arora, aromatherapist and beauty expert, says start skin care a week before Holi to avoid getting rashes or swelling. “Add two drops each of tea tree and patchouli oils and half tea spoon Dead Sea salt in 250 ml water and shake well. Spray on your face and other body parts at least twice a day. This will help you immensely to prevent any skin allergies erupting on application of Holi colours,” Arora said. Jojoba oil is also another option you

can try. “One teaspoon of jojoba oil mixed with one drop each of lavender or Neroli aroma oil along with tea tree oil can make a protective base before Holi festivities. Jojoba oil has the properties of the natural oils of our skin and shields the skin against chemicals and sunlight, while tea tree oil prevents allergies and lavender acts as soothing agent.

ext time when you plan a candlelight dinner at a finedining restaurant, get this straight: The more expensive the restaurant, the more likely you are to describe the food in terms of sex. According to Dan Jurafsky, professor of linguistics at Stanford University in California, people associate the luxury of an expensive restaurant with sexual pleasure. After conducting language analysis of more than 900,000 online reviews of 6,500 restaurants across seven U.S. cities, Jurafsky found that diners at luxury restaurants praise the “orgasmic pastry” and “seductively seared foie-gras”. On the other hand, those who visited not-so-costly places justified their food choices by claiming “the fries were like crack” or that they are “addicted to wings”, the New Zealand Herald reported. “If you like a very expensive restaurant, you use words like ‘orgasmic’, ‘sensual’, ‘sexy’ — and my favourite phrase was ‘a very naughty deep-fried pork belly’,” Jurafsky told the audience at the American Association for the Advancement of Sci-

ence convention in San Jose, California. The team also found that eating tasty food in a cheap restaurant is more likely to be compared with drug addiction and physical trauma.

The more expensive the restaurant, the more likely you are to describe the food in terms of sex, according to a study

The trauma of a bad restaurant experience is communicated by the use of the third person plural such as “we”, “us” and “our”. “They show that a bad thing happened to us as a group and we are going to get through it together,” he told the gathering. People also distance themselves from the bad food experience by putting it in the past tense. Both men and women used the language of sex in expensive restaurants but women were more likely to describe food as an addiction, Jurafsky said.
