Online grievance redressal launched for overseas Indians NEW DELHI: The central government on February 21 launched an online consular grievance system to help the overseas Indians in getting their problems redressed in a timebound manner. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj launched the MADAD — help or Online Consular Grievances System — for registering complaints of overseas Indians facing various problems. Such problems would now be addressed by the India Missions abroad in a time-bound manner. A result of the joint efforts of the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) and the External Affairs Ministry (MEA), Swaraj said, it will now enable overseas Indians not just to register their complaints online but also track its movement among the officials tackling it. The overseas Indians could send their complaints in writing, which would be put online by the mission officials. The online registration of complaints and their being attended to would considerably reduce the

The website has priorities for the complaint — complaints concerning mortal remains is of very high priority, then followed by high priority, priority and likewise. Any complaint relating to “mortal remains” would be addressed within two days. n a move that brought cheer to Indian techies, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced that spouses of H-1B and a handful of other visa holders will be eligible to work from May 26. “The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is extending eligibility for employment authorization to certain H-4 dependant spouses of H-1B non-immigrants who are seeking employmentbased lawful permanent resident

(LPR) status,” the announcement also said. The H-4 visa is given to spouses of those on an H-1B, as well as a handful of other, less common, visas. At present, H-4 visa holders can’t earn an income or possess a social security number.

The amended civil rights lawsuit filed in federal court last week sought unspecified compensatory and punitive damages for the February 6 assault on Sureshbhai Patel, 57, while he was taking a walk in front of his son Chirag Patel’s house in a Madison suburb. The initial complaint, filed on February 12 by Patel’s lawyer, Hank Sherrod, named Madison city and two at-that-time unidentified officers, John Doe and Jim Smith, as defendants. It has dropped the charges against a second police officer, a trainee, and no longer accuses the department of making up the emergency call or hiding the dash cam. Parker was arrested for assault after Madison Police released an audio of the call and the dash cam video that showed Parker taking Patel down. The lawsuit accuses the officer of illegal seizure, unlawful search, excessive force, false arrest and assault and battery. Gandhi statue to be unveiled in UK LONDON: A statue of Mahatma Gandhi will be unveiled in Britain’s prestigious Parliament Square in London next month, a media report said. The memorial will be unveiled on March 14 and will stand alongside those of Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela. The Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust has given one million pounds (over $1.5 million) for the sculpture. Gandhi will be the first Indian, and the only person never to have been in public office, to be honored with a statue in the square. Gandhi earned his law degree in London before leading India’s independence movement against British rule.

IS serious threat to Pakistan: Minister ISLAMABAD: Shortly after Pakistan Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan denied the presence of the Islamic State (IS) in South Asia, particularly Pakistan, Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry has said the militant group poses a serious threat to the country. “The government is on alert to the IS threat in the region,” Chaudhry said while briefing the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs Monday, Pakistan Today reported on February 24. He said the government has directed all authorities concerned to ensure that no organization or individual gets in contact with the IS in the country. A bipartisan parliamentary panel discussed the potential threat posed by the IS to Pakistan amid reports that the ruthless militant outfit was seeking a foothold in the country. However, Chaudhry clarified Pakistan has no desire to become part of the international coalition against IS. The confrontational drama between the hero Raghavan and the villain Laik gets a massive, nearmonumental fillip from the main actors. Varun Dhawan, a bit raw around the edges but nonetheless acutely effective as the grieving family-man, and Nawazuddin, flawlessly flamboyant as the sly villain who has willy-nilly destroyed the hero’s life, together confer an overpowering immediacy to the proceedings. But then, their collaborative might as the sinned and the sinner, begins to be dimmed by a digressive drama that impinges itself from the sidelines. The problem is with the structure. Raghavan cannot make a film without incorporating the heist element. I am not sure why I felt cheated and betrayed. —Subhash K. Jha

‘Badlapur’: Leaves much to be desired

EW YORK -- Involvement in cyberbullying increases the risk of depression in female college students--for both bullies and victims, says a study led by an Indian American researcher. What is worse is that the bullies are also likely to report problems of alcohol use, say the researchers in the study that appeared in the journal ‘Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking’. “Participants with any involvement in cyberbullying had increased odds of depression, and those involved in cyberbullying as bullies had increased odds of both depression and problems with alcohol use,” said Rajitha Kota from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. IDDLETOWN, CT- The police are investigating the source of a drug that sent at least 11 Wesleyan University students to area hospitals. Two of them were in serious condition and were flown to Hartford for treatment. School officials said on February 22 that the overdose symptoms seemed to point to the drug “Molly,” a party drug that is a form of MDMA or ecstasy. Middletown Police Chief William McKenna said his department was helping medical providers pursue information about the “bad batch” of the drug. The drug can vary radically in potency and can sharply drive up body temperature, which can lead to liver, kidney or cardiovascular failure, or death. “Our first and foremost goal is to obtain information on the batch of Molly that was distributed to the students on the campus,” McKenna said. “This information is critical in ensuring the recovery of those students affected.” The police received multiple calls for help in and around the Wesleyan campus for similar medical emergencies. It was unclear whether the students had been together.

ALEIGH, NC -- Federal prosecutors have filed the first of what are expected to be several criminal charges against Duke Energy for illegal pollution from its coal ash dumps in North Carolina. The US Attorney’s Office in Raleigh has charged Duke with a felony count of the negligent discharge of pollutants in violation of the Clean Water Act. The prosecutors say employees of the nation’s largest electricity company illegally dumped contaminated wastewater into the Neuse River from the Lee Steam Electric Plant in Goldsboro between 2010 and 2014.

alcohol use among college females. For the study, 265 female students from four colleges completed online surveys assessing involvement in cyberbullying behaviors. Participants also completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 to assess depressive symptoms and the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test to assess drinking problems. The researchers found that more than one in four females experienced cyberbullying in college, increasing their risk for depression. Among the participants who had experienced cyberbullying, the most common behaviors reported were hacking into another person’s account, receiving unwanted sexual advances, being harassed by text messages, and posting of degrading comments. Those who had experienced unwanted sexual advances online or via text messages had a six-fold increase in the odds of depression, the findings showed.

Two winners were chosen from each state; each will receive a $1,000 scholarship, a silver-engraved medal, and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. in early May. During the trip, 10 teens--from a pool of 102 state winners--will be chosen as the US’s top volunteers of 2015. Kids from 5th to 12th grade are eligible to compete in the US’s largest youth recognition program, which was launched in 1995 by financial services company Prudential in collaboration with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Each November, applications are sent

out to Girl Scout councils; 4-H, YMCA and Red Cross chapters, along with affiliates of the HandsOn network. Applications are also sent to middle and high schools. Lamba serves as the assistant officer in charge of the Navy Reserve medical clinic at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta. She was recognized for her diligence in the clinic’s recent relocation from mobile offices to a newly-renovated and upgraded medical facility. Lt. Cmdr. Lamba, who works as a dentist in her civilian life, was commissioned in 2009 in the Navy Reserve. Born in Delhi, her family shifted base to the US in 1992. Lamba moved from Houston to Atlanta in 2009 where she lives with her husband and two children.

ONNECTICUT -- A Connecticut dentist was charged with homicide a year after a patient flatlined in his chair while he attempted a marathon procedure to pull 20 of her teeth. Rashmi Patel turned himself into Enfield Police on February 17, a year to the day that 64-year-old Judith Gan died in his office. He was charged with criminally negligent homicide and tampering with evidence. Gan went to Patel’s clinic on February 17 last year to have 20 of her teeth removed. His assistants begged him to stop the dental work when her oxygen levels plummeted and she started gurgling, court records claimed. He failed to respond to her worsening condition and kept pulling teeth even when she lost consciousness. The assistants finally called 911, but Gan had already flatlined, the Department of Public Health said. She was pronounced dead at Bay State Medical Center in Springfield, Mass. Patel’s license, which was issued in 2003, was suspended in April. In December, the board banned him from treating patients under sedation. Patel was sued for malpractice in 2009

for “shoddy” dental work. The victim, Doreen Jasonis, won $500,000 from a jury before Patel appealed and settled out of court. In December 2013, a 55-year-old patient was rushed to the hospital after he stopped breathing while Patel performed dental work. The man spent six days in the hospital after suffering heart and lung damage. Patel posted $25,000 bail after his arrest. He is due back in court in a few weeks.

TAFFORD TOWNSHIP (NJ) -- A natural gas explosion that ripped a house apart injured five people on February 24 morning in Stafford Township, forcing evacuations from the area. The gas explosion occurred at a home on Oak Avenue near Route 9, said Al Della Fave, spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office. Homes in the immediate vicinity were evacuated as a precaution. New Jersey Natural Gas Co. spokesman Michael Kinney said crews had responded to a report of a natural gas leak when the explosion occurred. He said five gas company employees were hurt. A neighbor said that gas crews were working on a home around at 10:30 am. when the explosion occurred. Gas service to neighboring buildings were interrupted as crews worked. The Ocean County Sheriff ’s Office urged motorists to avoid the area.

Man faces 25-yr jail for attack on Sikh youth

ONG ISLAND, NY -- A Long Island man was indicted on hate crime charges last week for allegedly calling a Sikh man “Osama” in Queens and running him over. Joseph Caleca, 55, of Setauket, is charged last summer with attempted murder and felony assault, both as hate crimes, in connection with the incident tht occurred on July 30 last. A Queens County grand jury returned an indictment against Caleca on February 18. “The defendant is accused of an unprovoked attack that allegedly began with the defendant driving by the victim and his friends and calling him a terrorist and ordering him to leave the country,” Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said in a news release. “After an exchange of words, the

defendant allegedly struck the victim intentionally with his vehicle and dragged him along the street.” Caleca was arraigned on the ninecount indictment. He was remanded on continuing bail afterward, and is next due in court April 22. Caleca could be sentenced to up to 25 years in prison if convicted. Avenue in Ozone Park, Queens, when he got into a verbal argument with 29-yearold Sandeep Singh because Singh’s car door was blocking the street. The police said Caleca allegedly got out of his vehicle to confront Singh and his friends. Singh told the police that Caleca called him a terrorist and shouted “bin Laden, go back to your country” before mowing him down. Caleca dragged Singh several feet before fleeing the scene. “A man in a truck had called him a terrorist and told him to go back to his country,” the victim’s wife, Prabhurpreet Kaur, said earlier this month. “When Sandeep protested, the man ran him over, dragged him 30 feet under the truck and left him to die.” Singh was treated at Jamaica Hospital Center for abdominal and back injuries following the attack.

Applauding Met for showcasing Hindu deities in an exhibition, distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada, said that art had a long and rich

tradition in Hinduism and ancient Sanskrit literature talked about religious paintings of deities on wood or cloth. Severed hand, foot discovered along NYC’s shoreline BY A STAFF WRITER

EW YORK -- Three birdwatchers snapping photos along a New York City shoreline came upon a grisly discovery: a severed right hand lying palm up in the sand. They called 911 from Calvert Vaux Park in Brooklyn and officers with the New York City Police Department removed the decomposed hand. The police said the cleanly severed body part had been in the water “for a long period of time.” The discovery was made on January 4. The next day, officers returned to the scene with cadaver dogs and found a right foot beneath driftwood on the water’s edge, about 65 feet from where the hand was discovered. Authorities have not yet determined the identity of the victim.

51 injured as train collides with truck BY A STAFF WRITER LOS ANGELES ,CA -- At least 51 people were injured, including four critically, on February 24 morning when a Metrolink commuter train collided with a tractor-trailer truck on the tracks in Ventura County, northwest of Los Angeles. Oxnard police Sgt. Denise Shadinger said the truck was destroyed in flames after the multi-casualty 5:44 am crash. Many victims were treated for head and extremity injuries. The train, which has a cruising speed of about 79 miles an hour, was traveling ‘significantly’ slower at the time of impact. According to a fire official, the driver of the tractor-trailer survived the crash and fled the scene but was apprehended less than a mile from the crash site.

TEENS PURSUE MEDICAL RESEARCH ON THEIR OWN

ORT HURON, MI -- Two area Indian American teens have moved beyond the traditional school science fair to pursue medical research on their own. A third high-school student from Troy with ties to the area joined them. Port Huron Northern students Medha Krishen, 15, and Ilena Krishen, 17, and Mary Jarad, 17, a student at Detroit Country Day, presented their research findings in October at the American Society of Chest Physicians in Austin, Texas. The girls were the only three high school students whose papers were accepted for presentation at the conference for doctors and fellows. Their mentor, Dr. Sridhar Reddy, said the girls were accepted to the conference on their own merit. “It isn’t because they are young,’’ he said. “It’s because the questions they are asking and answering are relevant medical questions.’’ Reddy has mentored students through his

AN LEANDRO, CA -- A San Leandro, Calif. liquor store owned by an Indian American man sold the winning ticket of $1.4 million from a recent Powerball drawing and will receive a share of the prize money. Makhan Dabb’s Pop Top Market & Liquors sold the ticket to Powerball winner Hector Carrera. Dabb’s store located at 14817 East 14th St. will receive half a per cent, or $7,000, of the winning amount. Dabb recognized the owner of the winning Powerball ticket as a regular customer of his store, which he has owned for the past three years. He identified Carrera by viewing the store’s video after determining when the ticket was purchased. When the customer entered the store the next day, Dabb and his employee Satnam Singh broke the news about his win. Carrera was one of three people in California to win $1.4 million after choosing five of the six winning numbers. Three people--in Texas, South Carolina and Puerto Rico--who got all six numbers, will split the $500 million Powerball jackpot.

TLANTA, GA -- Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for the arrests and indictments of two men accused of robbing a Subway. The suspects, oOne of them armed with a silver chrome pistol, hit the restaurant at 74 Northside Drive SW shortly before 9:30 pm on February 20. The police described one suspect as a black man, 20 to 30 years old, with a medium to dark complexion. He was about 5 feet 9 inches tall and 175 pounds, with a thin mustache and tattoos near his eyebrows. The second suspect was a black man, 21 to 30 years old, with a light complexion, medium build and mustache.

Medha’s topic was about finding a new way to screen high-school athletes who are at risk of dying due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The

condition occurs in 1 in 500 people. Medha has been following the condition for the past three years after a close family friend died while out for a jog. Medha’s sister Ilena presented her method of early lung damage detection. She wanted at first to use the method to detect music frequencies. Two other factors influenced Ilena’s choice of project. “We’ve had a lot of smokers in our family. We had a death in the family due to lung disease. And I was also very interested in environmental issues, particularly air pollution,’’ she said. Ilena hit upon her project idea when she came across an electronic stethoscope at Reddy’s home. “He lent it to me to find out more about it,’’ she said. Ilena connected the stethoscope to a computer that was installed with a MATLAB program in order to run a frequency analysis. She used the lung sound once it was captured by the stethoscope:

“You just click on the file and save it as a .waz file. It shows up as an iTunes icon. I copied and pasted it into my program and it produced a graph and displayed the frequencies.’’ Ilena’s mother, Priya Krishen, said she “had no clue’’ how to help her daughter with the technology part of her project. “It involves a lot of statistics, physics, and how to write a software program. And it just so happens that it has medical relevance,’’ she said. It took Ilena seven to eight months to figure out how to work the technology before she could begin conducting research, her mother said. “There were a lot of physicians in town that told her she was not going to find anything,’’ she said. Ilena said she plans to bring her research results to less-developed countries where CAT scans or other methods are not as readily available. Mary Jarad presented her work at a conference in Munich, Germany, just prior to joining the Krishen sisters in Austin.

LGIN, IL -- The president of the Institute of Islamic Education in northwest suburban Elgin has been charged with sexually abusing a former employee. Mohammed Abdullah Saleem, 75, is charged with criminal sexual abuse, according to a statement from the Elgin police. Saleem is the president of the Institute of Islamic Education at 1280 Bluff City Blvd. in Elgin. A 23-year-old woman reported in December that Saleem “committed an act of sexual conduct against her” while she was working at the institute in April 2014.

RVINGTON , NJ -- Authorities are seeking a motive for the fatal shooting of a man who was killed in a liquor store that his family operates in northern New Jersey. Essex County prosecutors say the Irvington police responded to the store around 4 pm on February 15 and found 28-year-old Amit Patel, of Edison. He had been shot at least once, and was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. Officials say it’s not clear if Patel was shot during a botched robbery, since it did not appear that anything was stolen from the business.

HICAGO, IL -- The Maharudram committee of the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago, Lemont, IL organized the “Rudra: Who Really is He? Part 2 All Day Shiva Event” at Sama Rathi auditorium on February 21. The temple is located at 10915 Lemont Road, Lemont, IL. The auditorium was fully packed with over 500 people. Well over 300 children showcased their talent with great enthusiasm and interest in this seven-hour event. The grand inauguration ceremony of the prelude series titled “Rudra: Who Really is He?” was on January 31. This is the prelude program to the main event “Maharudram and Navachandi Mahayagnam” to be held on June 12, 13, and 14. The prelude is a series of enlightening discourses and cultural presentations bringing out the spiritual symbolism of Mahayagnas and their contribution to

universal peace, welfare and prosperity. The All-Day Shiva Event started with the grand Girija Kalyanam, the celestial marriage of Shiva and Parvathi. The devotees enjoyed the sumptuous wedding feast from the Prasadam kitchen and were then treated with a variety of cultural programs presented by the students of various dance and music schools, including the members of a dance school who travelled from Iowa. Yo u n g s t u d e n t s o f re n ow n e d Bharatanatyam teachers, including Sushmita Arunkumar, Sangita Rangala, Vanitha Veeravalli, Pragnya Yogesh, Vidya Pandikaran, Hema Rajagopalan, Sowmya Kumaran, and Anupama Rajesh, presented various Bharathanatyam performances. The audience was mesmerized seeing the children in authentic costumes presented with perfect synchronization and confidence. Students of various music teachers, including Vasanthi Iyer, Maragatha Mani Sundaresan, Vaidehi Sudharshan, Subadra

HICAGO, IL -- A student l e a d e r o f Un i ve r s i t y o f Illinois at Chicago (UIC) has been charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old female student in what Cook County prosecutors say was a re-enactment of scenes from the film “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Freshman Mohammad Hossain, 19, appeared shocked after a Cook County judge set his bail at $500,000, walking back to the lockup with his mouth wide open. The judge was taken aback after Hossain’s lawyer, assistant Cook County public defender Sandra Bennewitz, said his client had been involved with several UIC leadership programs, was a student ambassador to the alumni association and was on the triathlon team. “Sandra, how can someone involved in all that let a movie persuade him to do something like this?” asked Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. “He would say that it was consensual,” she replied.

According to an arrest report, she somehow managed to free herself but the accused held her arms behind her back and sexually assaulted her as she continued to plead for him to stop, according to Karr. Hossain even prevented a roommate him from entering the room as the woman left and told another person what happened, and then called the police. The police arrested Hossain later that night in another dorm building in the 700 block of South Halsted Street. He was quizzed by UIC detectives and, according to Karr, admitted assaulting the woman and “doing something wrong.” He allegedly told the police he and the woman were re-enacting scenes from “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Five-vehicle crash at Oakton Street

CHAUMBURG, IL -- A Hoffman Estates woman was ticketed for allegedly causing a chain-reaction, five-vehicle accident along a stretch of Oakton Street dividing Park Ridge and Niles. Park Ridge Deputy Police Chief Lou Jogmen said witnesses reported that around 12:30 pm on February 14, a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan drove through a red light on eastbound Oakton Street at Prospect Avenue, colliding with a vehicle that was headed north on Prospect. The impact caused the Grand Caravan to flip onto its driver’s side and strike a car that was stopped for the red light on westbound Oakton, the police said. This car was then pushed into two other vehicles that were stopped in the curb lane of westbound Oakton Street. The driver of the Grand Caravan, 42-yearold Farrda Marabout, told the police that her brakes had failed. She was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash and cited for disobeying a red light and driving without insurance. One other driver reported a non-life threatening injury in the accident, but was not transported to a hospital by paramedics, Jogmen said.
