TRUMP GOES LIVE ON BORDER CRISIS President Donald Trump said all Americans were hurt by uncontrolled illegal migration IANS, WASHINGTON

I

n a prime-time address to the nation over the “growing humanitarian and security crisis” at the US-Mexico border, President Donald Trump said that all Americans were hurt by uncontrolled illegal migration. “My fellow Americans, tonight I’m speaking to you because there is a growing humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border,” CNN quoted Trump as saying in his speech televised live from the Oval Office. “All Americans are hurt by uncontrolled illegal migration... It strains public resources and drives down jobs and wages.” The immigration matter, Trump said, was “a crisis of the heart, a crisis of the soul”. The President said that the US

Manafort filing hints at Russia collusion WASHINGTON: Lawyers working for President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort have accidentally revealed the clearest evidence of coordination between the campaign and Russians, the media reported this week. Parts of a court filing that were meant to be redacted by Manafort’s legal team, were released publicly, CNN reported. According to the filing, Manafort discussed a Ukrainian peace plan with his close Russianintelligence-linked associate, Konstantin Kilimnik. He also shared polling data related to the 2016 presidential campaign with Kilimnik. could no longer accommodate immigrants who enter the country illegally. “We are out of space to hold them and we have no way to promptly return them back home to

their country,” Trump said. The President then went on to blame the Democrats for an 18-day partial government shutdown, saying the matter could be easily

resolved if his political opponents cede to his demands on border funding. “The government remains shut down for one reason and one reason only: the Democrats will not fund border security,” Trump said. Democrats have expressed support for border security steps like enhanced technology, but have refused to provide support for a border barrier. The President however, did not declare a national emergency due to the crisis, which could have allowed him to fund his promised border wall without congressional approval, CNN said. Soon after his speech, the Democrats slammed Trump with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer saying that the no president should demand “he gets his way or else the government shuts down”.

NRI Congressman asks Trump to end shutdown IANS, WASHINGTON

ndian American Congressman Ro Khanna has asked President Donald Trump to end the ongoing government shutdown and denounced hiss plans to declare a national emergency to build a border wall. As the partial government shutdown entered 19th day on Wednesday, making it the secondlongest in the US history, the California Democrat, in a series of

tweets, talked about the implications of the shutdown and how it is affecting Americans, reports The American Bazaar. “Trump may want to declare a ‘national emergency’ to sidestep Congress and build a border wall. The real ‘national emergency’ is that young Americans are drowning in student debt, families are forced into bankruptcy due to health costs & millions of our citizens are left behind,” Khanna, who represents California’s 17th dis-

appointed. As the largest share-holder, the US by tradition appoints the head of the Bank, while Europeans determine the chief of the International Monetary Fund. Kim was nominated for the job by former President Barack Obama

in 2012. Before Trump’s election, Kim was hastily re-appointed in September 2016 to a second term that began in July 2017 with an eye on pre-empting a possible Trump nominee getting the job. Now, however, Trump will get an opportunity to nominate the Bank’s head. Trump’s role will resurrect and strengthen challenges to the postWorld War II model of the leadership of the 189-member bank that has always been determined by the US . Already the US nominee was challenged for the first time in 2012 by two contenders. Colombian economist Jose Antonio Ocampo Gaviria eventually withdrew from the race, while Nigeria’s then-Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala lost when the Bank’s directors rubberstamped Kim’s appointment.

Now, quota for upper caste Calling the bill historic, Social Justice Minister Thawarchand Gehlot allayed fears that the legislation would face legal hurdles IANS, NEW DELHI

head of the Lok Sabha elections, the Parliament on Wednesday passed a landmark Constitution amendment bill providing for 10 percent reservation to upper castes in government jobs and higher educational institutions, with the Rajya Sabha voting it late in the night after rejecting a demand for referring it to a select committee for detailed scrutiny. The House passed the Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill, 2019 — which was adopted by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday — with 165 members in its favor and seven against it in a division amidst broad support from the Congress and other opposition parties despite their reservations over its constitutional validity and the timing in view of the approaching elections. Earlier, the House rejected an

amendment moved by DMK member Kanimozhi and CPI(M)’s T.K. Rangarajan for referring the bill to a select committee for in depth scrutiny, with 155 voting against it and 18 for in a House of 244. Several other opposition amendments were also negatived.

A constitutional amendment needs a special majority of more than half of the House present and twothirds of those present voting in favor of it. The AIADMK, which is friendly with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), staged a walkout opposing

the Bill with its member A. Navaneethakrishnan saying it violated the basic structure of the Constitution. Rejecting the opposition criticism that the bill was brought late in the government’s tenure with an eye on upper caste votes in the coming Lok Sabha elections, Social Justice Minister Thawarchand Gehlot said the measure had been brought with good intentions and was aimed at justice for the economically weaker sections. He called the bill historic and allayed fears that the legislation would face legal hurdles, saying since it is a constitutional amendment even the Supreme Court would accept it, should there be any challenge. The Minister told the Congress party that unlike the Narasimha Rao government which issued a government order to implement a similar quota, the Modi government had taken precaution by bringing in a statute amendment.

day after the Supreme Court reinstated Alok Verma as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director with limited powers, he resumed attending office on Wednesday and reviewed the progress of various high profile cases. Verma, who was sent on forced leave on the night of October 2324, returned to work after almost two-and-a-half months. At the CBI headquarters, Verma was received by M. Nageswara Rao,

who was appointed to look after Verma’s duties and functions. Verma went directly to his cabin on the 10th floor, which was closed since the time he was divested of his powers. Two CBI officials who were transferred by Rao also arrived at the agency headquarters to meet Verma. According to a CBI source, Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSP) A.K. Bassi and Ashwani Kumar met Verma. The source said he also met several other officials and reviewed the progress of various high profile cases. Verma, a 1979-batch IPS

agency chief by setting aside the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) and the Centre’s decision to divest him of his powers to function as its head but with a caveat that he will not take any policy decision till a high-level committee goes into the issue afresh.

BRIEFS Stuck: Citizenship Amendment Bill NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha did not take up the Citizenship Amendment Bill on Wednesday on the last day of the winter session and the government is expected to press for its passage in the brief budget session of parliament. Home Minister Rajnath Singh made a statement in the House to address apprehensions on the bill which was passed by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The bill seeks to remove hurdles in the way of eligible migrants from six minority groups from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan getting Indian citizenship. The passage of the bill in the Lok Sabha led to the AGP withdrawing from the BJP-led government in Assam. Several allies of the BJP in the northeast are also opposed to the bill.

SC defers Ayodhya case to Jan 29 NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday deferred the Ayodhya title dispute to January 29, saying that the five judge bench to hear the case will be reconstituted as Justice U.U. Lalit has recused himself. The apex court took the decision after senior counsel Rajeev Dhawan, appearing for one of the Muslim parties, told the bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi that Justice Lalit in 1997 appeared for former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh in one of the matters related to the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi dispute. Singh is currently the Rajasthan Governor. Dhawan was just bringing the issue to the notice of the court. Thereafter Justice Lalit conveyed to Chief Justice Gogoi and other members of the bench of his reluctance to continue on the bench and recused himself. —IANS

Narendra Modi, Donald Trump agree to boost India-US ties IANS, NEW DELHI

D

ays after US President Donald Trump’s jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over India’s role in ensuring peace and stability in Afghanistan, the two leaders agreed to further strengthen bilateral relations in the year ahead. According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office on Tuesday, Modi and Trump exchanged New Year greetings in a telephonic conversation on Monday evening. “They expressed satisfaction at

Donald Trump

Narendra Modi

the progress in India-US strategic partnership in 2018,” the statement said. “They appreciated developments such as the launch of the new 2+2 Dialogue mechanism and the firstever trilateral summit of India, the US and Japan.”

Modi, Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met on the sidleness of the G20 Summit in Buenos Aires last November. The three countries along with Australia, are part of a quad that was revived in 2017 seeking to work for peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. Last September, the first ever India-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue was held here in which External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and then Defense Secretary Jim Mattis participated.

Tuesday’s statement said that Modi and Trump also “took positive note of growing bilateral cooperation in defense, counter-terrorism and energy and coordination on regional and global issues”. “They agreed to continue to work together for further strengthening India-US bilateral relations in 2019.” Monday’s conversation between the two leaders took place after Trump on January 2 said that India was not doing enough for peace and stability in Afghanistan. In his first Cabinet meeting, Trump asked India, Russia, Pak-

istan and other neighboring countries to take the responsibility for Afghanistan’s security as he defended his move to withdraw troops from that country. Trump also referred to Modi as an example of how world leaders were talking about their contributions that were nowhere near the billions of dollars the US was spending. India hit back with sources here saying that New Delhi does not send troops abroad except under specific UN mandate. India pointed out that it plays a significant role as a development partner in Afghanistan.

Sabarimala gets wrong type of global attention Successive governments have been demanding the temple be elevated to that of a national pilgrim Centre SANU GEORGE, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

uccessive governments in Kerala have been pressing the various Union governments demanding the famed Sabarimala temple be elevated to that of a national pilgrim center but instead is now the focus of an avoidable type of international after a Supreme Court directive that women of all ages be permitted into the pre-12th century shrine that attracts the world’s largest pilgrimage. The temple town has witnessed protests by Hindu groups since the September 28 verdict that allowed women of all ages to enter the temple, including those from the hitherto banned age group of 10 to 50 years. The Left Democratic Front government led by the CPI-M has been trying to implement the ver-

dict even as the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party and several Hindu groups are up in arms against it. The temple usually opens for five days at the beginning of every Malayalam month and then from November 15 to January 20 is home to the festival season comprising the Mandala puja session and the Makaravilaku session. Ever since the verdict, around three dozen women from the hitherto banned age group have tried and failed to go up the pathway leading to the temple, following protests from the believers. At dawn on January 2, two Keralaite women in the hitherto banned age group managed to pay obeisance, with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan confirming this. Thereafter, the Sabarimala tantri (head priest) closed down the temple for an hour at 10.30 a.m and

conducted “purification’ rituals” something that has never happened before during the two-month-long festival season. Deeply hurt by the manner in which the Kerala Police enabled the the two women to enter the temple, an angry Sabarimala Karma Samithi, an umbrella organization of Hindu groups that has the backing of the BJP and RSS, called for a statewide shutdown the next day

Kerala Police chief Loknath Behra stated that close to 40,000 people have been booked for creating violence in the state in the past few days and 1,869 cases have been registered. The approximate damages caused due to the violence has been estimated at around Rs 10 crore, with close to 100 state owned-buses also being damaged.

What has come as a shocker to the state government is the strong position taken by the powerful Nair Service Society (NSS), the sociocultural body of the Hindu Nair community, which condemned what it Vijayan’s role in staging a pre-scripted display of breaking the customs and traditions of the Sabarimala temple.

Gopinath takes over as IMF chief economist

Four women will dominate the global economic policy sphere with eminent academic Gita Gopinath ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS

F

our women will dominate the global economic policy sphere with eminent academic Gita Gopinath becoming the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) chief economist. In a sign of growing women power, she along with her boss and IMF’s Managing Director Christine Lagarde, World Bank’s chief economist Pinelopi Koujianou Goldberg, and Kristalina Georgieva, the Bank’s CEO who will become its interim President next month, will have the leading role in guiding international financial policy as the world economy faces its severest stress in more than a decade. They confront the confluence of a retreat from globalization, a trade war between China and the US, uncertainties in Europe over Brexit, weakening of several currencies against the dollar, shifts in

foreign direct investments and the growing inequalities between nations and within countries. Gopinath, who became the first woman to become the IMF’s chief economist, succeeded Maurice Obstfeld, who left the organization at the end of last year.

Gopinath succeeded Maurice Obstfeld, who left the IMF at the end of last year. When Lagarde announced in October Gopinath’s appointment with the formal title of Economic Counselor and Director of the Research Department, she called her “one of the world’s outstanding economists, with impeccable academic credentials, a proven track record of intellectual leadership and extensive international experience”. “All this makes her exceptionally well-placed to lead our Research

Trump calls kin of slain Indian-origin cop WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has called up the family of Indian-origin police officer Ronil Singh who was shot to death allegedly by an illegal immigrant in the US state of California last week, the White House said. Corporal Ronil Singh, 33, of the Newman Police Department was shot and killed during a traffic stop at Merced Street and Eucalyptus Avenue on December 26. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders released a statement

about the President’s call to Singh’s family. “President Trump spoke with the family and law enforcement colleagues of fallen Newman, California, police officer Ronald “Ron” Singh,” Sanders said in the statement. “The President praised officer Singh’s service to his fellow citizens, offered condolences and commended law enforcement’s rapid investigation, response and apprehension of the suspect.”

Indian falls to death while taking selfie DUBLIN: An Indian student has died after falling off a cliff in Ireland while taking a selfie. The unidentified Indian national in his 20s was studying at a university in Dublin. He lost his balance while taking the photograph at the popular tourist attraction the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare on Friday afternoon. The tragedy happened south of the main viewing areas near the visitor centre. There were hundreds of people enjoying the scenery and cliff walk at the time, the Irish Mirror reported. Emergency services, including a search helicopter, were mobilized as soon as the alarm was raised. A winchman from the helicopter recov-

ered the man from the sea. The victim was flown to nearby Doolin where he was formally pronounced dead. The police interviewed a number of witnesses and confirmed they were treating the death as a tragic accident. “There is nothing to suggest at this stage that this was anything other than a tragic accident. Initial indications are, having taken statements from a number of people, is that the victim was taking a selfie and lost his footing,” an Irish Police spokesman said. The incident remained under investigation while the police was tonight trying to make contact with the victim’s family in India. —IANS

Department at this important juncture. I am delighted to name such a talented figure as our Chief Economist,” Lagarde said. Before coming to the IMF, Gopinath was professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University. She was concurrently appointed in 2016 as the economic adviser to the Kerala Chief Minister with the rank of principal secretary. She has also served as a member of the Eminent Persons Advisory Group on G-20 Matters for the Indian Ministry of Finance. In addition to helping formulate policies for the IMF and set strategies and evaluate the performance of nations, Gopinath will oversee the World Economic Outlook Report that is considered a major survey of the global economy. A significant aspect of her position will be helping set the conditions for countries seeking bailouts from the IMF.

All Indians bust out of poker tournament IANS, NASSAU (BAHAMAS)

T

he great Indian poker hope of winning the Rs 36 crore stake at Bahamas has folded. All the eight Indians and several Indian-origin players have been busted out of the tournament organized by online leader Pokerstars. The last Indian-origin person fighting for the top slot, Ajay Chabra, bowed out on day three as only 38 players were left in the fray from the original 1,039 who had entered the Rs 25,000 buy-in tournament in Bahamas — taking the prize pool to $26,45 million. Six others, apart from the winner would get over a million each. The money would be paid in descending amounts to players who ranked up to 181. The leader, after day three play, was Scott Baumstein of the US who had amassed $4.24 million chips. But there could still be a lot of changes in the run up to the final minute of the game over the next two days. According to Aditya Agarwal, brand ambassador of Pokerstars, it takes a cool mental state to reach the top level in a five-day tournament. Brexit: May faces fresh obstacles The UK is due to leave the EU on March 29, exactly two years after May enacted Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty to officially notify the European Commission of the UK's decision to leave IANS, LONDON

U

K Prime Minister Theresa May was facing an increasingly uphill struggle in her bid to push her government's Brexit plan through Parliament on Wednesday as opposition lawmakers pushed for amendments to minimize the chances of a no-deal in case her deal gets voted down. May, leader of the Conservative Party minority government, took part in a second day of debate in the House of Commons, the UK's lower chamber of lawmaking, since proceedings recommenced in the new year almost a month after an initial parliamentary vote on the topic was postponed at the last minute to avoid an almost certain flop. vote on January 15, Efe news reported. It followed a similar measure tabled late on Tuesday by opposition Labour Party backbencher Yvette Cooper which sought to

limit the government's ability to use taxpayer money in case of a nodeal Brexit. The cross-party moves against the government were an effort to prevent May from using the threat of a no-deal Brexit, whereby the UK would crash out of the bloc with no future framework in place, as leverage to wind down the clock and convince MPs to back her plan, which she has presented as the only option available. The UK is due to leave the EU on March 29, exactly two years after May enacted Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty to officially notify the European Commission of the UK's decision to leave following a referendum in 2016. orth Korean leader Kim Jong-un has said his country will make efforts for the second summit with the US leaders to achieve results that will be welcomed by the international community. Kim made the remarks during his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday in Beijing, during his visit to China from January 7-10, Xinhua reported on Thursday. The recent visit to China was Kim's fourth in less than a year. During the talks, Kim said the Korean Peninsula situation has been easing since last year, and

China's important role in this process is obvious to all. He said North Korea highly and sincerely appreciates the Chinese efforts.

Kim said he hoped that relevant parties will attach importance to and positively respond to North Korea's legitimate concerns, and jointly push for a comprehensive resolution of the Korean Peninsula issue.

The EU has consistently said the package, which was agreed upon after two years of talks, was not up for re-negotiation. Adding to May's woes was the Democratic Unionist Party, a right-wing regional platform from Northern Ireland that props up the Prime Minister's executive, which has threatened to shoot down the plan unless it gets further clarifications on the terms and conditions of the Irish backstop. The backstop would act as an insurance policy to maintain an open border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland in the event of a no deal. The pro-British DUP, however, has objected to the hypothetical situation that Belfast could, therefore, be held in regulatory alignment with Dublin rather than London.

cent of the investments will take place in the country's commercial hub Karachi and 35 per cent in Lahore,” he added. The $10 billion investment will

be in addition to the $6 billion bailout package given by Riyadh to Islamabad during Khan's visit to Saudi Arabia in October 2018. Similarly, Pakistan will also sign MoUs with China, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Malaysia over the next two months. Sharif told Dawn that he had recently visited China and signed MoUs on industrial cooperation under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CEPC). The BoI chief said the UAE was interested in agriculture, housing and other sectors. He said that four Malaysian firms were also due this month and would invest in four sectors — halal meat, gemstone, IT and hi-tech education.

he Virat Kohli-led Indian cricket team entered the annals of history on Monday by winning their firstever Test series in Australia. After the visiting team won the Adelaide and Melbourne Tests, the fourth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) here ended in a draw as no play was possible on the last day due to continuous downpour. India clinched the series 2-1. Opting to bat in the final Test, India took a commanding position as scintillating knocks by Cheteshwar Pujara (193) and stumper Rishabh Pant (159 n.o.) guided the team to a massive 622/7 in their first innings. India then rode chinaman Kuldeep Yadav’s fifer to bundle out the home side for 300 runs and enforce a follow-on. Kohli chipped in with 282 runs. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah turned out to be the most effective bowler for the visitors by bagging 21 wickets in the Border-Gavaskar series, while his partner Mohammed Shami scalped 16 wickets. ndia thrashed Thailand 4-1 to start their campaign at the 2019 AFC Asian Cup on an emphatic note here on Sunday. This was India’s first victory against Thailand since the Merdeka Cup of 1986. This was also India’s highest victory margin against Thailand. In 1986, India had won 3-1 thanks to a hat-trick by the legendary Kris-

hanu Dey. The win put India at the top of the points table in Group A. They are followed by Bahrain and hosts United Arab Emirates (UAE), who had played out a 1-1 stalemate in the tournament opener on Saturday. The astonishing scoreline, which perhaps surprised even the Indian players themselves, came on the back of a brace by star striker Sunil Chhetri (27th, 46th minutes) a maiden international goal by the

young Anirudh Thapa (68th) and an excellent finish by Jeje Lalpekhlua (80th). Teerasil Dangda found the only goal for Thailand when he found

the equalizer in the 33rd minute. India started on an attacking note before the Thai players found their rhythm and gradually started to dominate proceedings.

‘Sexist’ comments: Pandya apologizes NEW DELHI: All-rounder Hardik Pandya has issued an apology for his alleged “sexist” comments made during a show hosted by Bollywood filmmaker Karan Hardik Pandya Johar. Pandya, who was accompanied by opening batsman Lokesh Rahul, said he got “carried away by the nature” of the show, where he boasted about hooking up with multiple women and how he was open with his parents about his adventures.

But India took the lead against the run of play when they were awarded a penalty after the ball hit Thai defender Theerathon Bunmathan’s arm inside the box. Chhetri stepped forward to calmly push the ball in even as Thailand goalkeeper Chatchai Budprom dived the other way. Thailand continued to press forward and Bunmathan made amends for conceding the penalty when he whipped in an accurate free-kick into the Indian penalty area which was headed in by Dangda. The equalizer was followed by a prolonged spell of domination by Thailand with the Indians forced to come up with some gritty defending to keep their opponents at bay.

Their policy has been to destabilize the Hindu religious practices, temples and such other spiritual institutions so that Hindus are demoralized and are divided,” Swami Chidananda Puri said while addressing the media here. Goa beach shack operators oppose move to cap prices PANAJI: Operators of beach shacks, temporary palm-thatched shacks which offer food and refreshments on Goa’s beaches, have opposed a proposed move by the Tourism Ministry to fix a cap on prices of food and beverages. A few days after Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar said that steep pricing of refreshments in restaurants and beach shacks had triggered a drop in the number of tourist arrivals in Goa, Cruz Cardozo, who heads the Goa Shack Owners Welfare Society, said the government should first cap exorbitant pricing on the menus of starred restaurants. “If the government wants to control prices, they should first control prices in five-star restaurants and not shacks. The prices there are exorbitant. The food and beverages sold in starred outlets are much more expensive than ours,” Cardozo told IANS. After Goa experienced a dip in the number of tourist arrivals for a second-year running, Ajgaonkar said the state Tourism Ministry was working on a mechanism to enforce capping of prices on menus in shacks and restaurants. Blaming escalating prices as one of the reasons for the drop in the number of tourists visiting the coastal state, he said any restaurant or shack which prices food and beverages above Rs 500 would be fined. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Vijayan’s Communist Party of India are just to appease a section of minority communities so as to get their political support. “The Marxist party for quite some time has been taking a very soft stand towards Muslim extremism due to which Kerala has

already become a breeding ground for extremists, both domestic and international. Islamic State terrorists have established deep roots in Kerala and reports on massive recruitment into the IS are plenty,” Puri said. He asserted the Kerala Chief

Minister is determined to implement the Supreme court order, which allows menstruating women’s entry in the temple, even after the apex court’s decision to review its order on January 22. “No women devotee, in the age group of 10 to 50, has ever attempted to enter the Sabarimala temple after the Supreme Court judgement of September 28, 2018. But the Kerala Chief Minister is determined to implement the order, which even the Supreme court has decided to review on January 22, 2019 in an open court, in order to achieve his political intentions, irrespective of the devotees’ beliefs,” he said. Puri said the Sabarimala devotees are not against any women or feminist movement and that they have only put in place the restriction due to the age-old practice of the Sabarimala temple. “The limited restriction on the

entry of women from 10 to 50 years, in the Sabarimala Temple, is a matter of religion and religious faith and practice, and the fundamental principles underlying the ‘prathishtha’ of the Sabarimala Temple, as well as the custom and usage of worship of the deity there, Lord Ayyappa,” he said. The Sabarimala Action Council members claimed that due to the current law and order situation and “the violence propagated jointly by the Marxists and the Muslim fundamentalists”, the life of ordinary people have been badly affected and the devotees are under severe mental stress. The council further demanded the immediate intervention of the Union Government so that the situation does not go out of hand and urged the government to establish the rights of Sabarimala devotees “to save them from Police raj and Marxist led government”.

he Supreme Court has paved the way, for now, for the re-opening of the Vedanta’s Sterlite copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu’s as it put on hold the status quo order passed by the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court. The state government had on May 28, 2018 ordered the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to seal and “permanently” close the plant in the wake of violent protests over pollution con-

cerns. The protests turned violent, resulted in the death of 13 people in police firing on May 22-23 in Tuticorin. ALIENS CALLING EARTH?

Astronomers detect repeated fast radio bursts from space that make ‘alien life’ theories alive IANS, WASHINGTON

A

stronomers, including some of Indian origin, have detected repeating energy bursts from a single source from deep space for the second time in history — giving impetus to theories that there could be evidence of advanced alien life. A Canadian-led team of scientists found the second repeating fast radio burst (FRB) from the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) telescope located in the mountains of British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley. Of the more than 60 FRBs observed to date, repeating bursts from a single source had been found only once before — a discovery made by the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico in 2015, the team said in a paper published in the journal Nature and presented at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Seattle on Wednesday. FRBs are short bursts of radio waves coming from far outside our Milky Way galaxy and scientists believe FRBs emanate from powerful astrophysical phenomena billions of light years away. “Whatever the source of these radio waves is, it’s interesting to see how wide a range of frequencies it

iPhones production trimmed by 10% TAIPEI: Just a week after lowering its revenue estimate for the first quarter of fiscal 2019, Apple is cutting its current production plan for new iPhones by about 10 per cent for the January-March quarter, the Nikkei Asian Review reported. Apple asked its suppliers to produce fewer new iPhones than planned for the quarter late last month — before the January 2 revelation that the Cupertino, California-headquartered tech giant would miss its revenue forecasts at the end of 2018, the report said. It’s the second time in two months that the iPhone maker has trimmed its planned production for the flagship device. In a letter to investors on January 2, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that for the quarter ending December 29, the company now expects revenue of approximately $84 billion, down from the $89 to $93 billion it had previously projected. “We did not foresee the magnitude of the economic deceleration, particularly in greater China,” Cook said in the letter. —IANS

The repeating FRB was one of a total of 13 bursts detected over a period of just three weeks. It came six times from the same location, 1.5 billion light-years away.

can produce. There are some models where intrinsically the source can’t produce anything below a certain frequency,” said team member Arun Naidu of McGill University. The repeating FRB was one of a total of 13 bursts detected over a period of just three weeks during the summer of 2018. It came six times from the same location, 1.5 billion light-years away. Additional bursts from the repeating FRB were detected in following weeks.

“Until now, there was only one known repeating FRB. Knowing that there is another suggests that there could be more out there,” added Ingrid Stairs, a member of the CHIME team and an astrophysicist at University of British Columbia (UBC). Most of the FRBs previously detected had been found at frequencies near 1400 MHz, well above the Canadian telescope’s range of 400 MHz to 800 MHz. The majority of the 13 FRBs detected showed signs of “scatter-

ing,” a phenomenon that reveals information about the environment surrounding a source of radio waves. “That could mean in some sort of dense clump like a supernova remnant,” says team member Cherry Ng, an astronomer at the University of Toronto. “Or near the central black hole in a galaxy. But it has to be in some special place to give us all the scattering that we see”. Ever since FRBs were first detected, scientists have been piec-

ing together the signals’ observed characteristics to come up with models that might explain the sources of the mysterious bursts. The detection by CHIME of FRBs at lower frequencies means some of these theories will need to be reconsidered. “(We now know) the sources can produce low-frequency radio waves and those low-frequency waves can escape their environment, and are not too scattered to be detected by the time they reach the Earth. “That tells us something about the environments and the sources. We haven’t solved the problem, but it’s several more pieces in the puzzle,” noted Tom Landecker, a CHIME team member from the National Research Council of Canada. In 2017, Professor Avi Loeb from the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics his colleague Manasvi Lingam proposed that FRBs could be leakage from planet-sized alien transmitters, reported The Guardian. “”Fast radio bursts are exceedingly bright given their short duration and origin at great distances, and we haven’t identified a possible natural source with any confidence,” said Loeb in a statement after the publication of a previous paper in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

‘Methane in interstellar atmosphere can exist’ IANS, CHENNAI

R

esearchers at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) have formed clathrate hydrates in an environment similar to that of interstellar medium (ISM), according to a statement issued by the institute. According to IIT-M, such hydrates, especially that of methane, are thought to be the future sources of fuel. Many nations across the world, including India, have programs to explore hydrates in the ocean bed. Gas hydrates such as methane hydrate can release combustible gases which could be used as a fuel, the IIT-M said. Clathrate hydrates are molecules like methane, carbon dioxide...trapped in well-defined cages of water molecules forming crystalline solids,” said the statement, adding these are formed at high pressures and low temperatures at places such as the ocean floor, hundreds of metres below the sea level. They are also found in

glaciers such as in Siberia. “IIT Madras researchers formed such hydrates in vacuum, one thousand billion times below the atmospheric pressure called ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) and temperature close to minus 263 degree Celsius (10 Kelvin). These are the conditions present in deep space,” the statement said. This discovery of hydrates is highly unexpected at extremely low pressures and ultra-cold temperatures and may have several implications for the chemistry of

such atmospheres, the statement said. Detailing the discovery, IITM said, an experimental UHV was specially built for such studies, which housed several spectroscopic probes. “Nanometre thin layers of ice and methane were prepared by condensing a mixture of the gases on a specially made single crystal of ruthenium metal. The ruthenium metal surface was cooled to low temperatures initially,” IITM said. According to IIT-M, the forma-

tion of hydrates was studied by spectroscopy. At first, when the gases were deposited, the spectroscopic features resembled solids of methane and water ice. However, as the hydrate cage formed with methane trapped in it, the molecule became ‘free’ as in the gas phase. “The observed changes were compared with theoretical simulations which confirmed the hydrate formation. The results were verified with the hydrate formed by standard methods,” IITM said. “Normally, in UHV experiments, spectroscopic changes are monitored only for minutes, maybe an hour. I thought that why not wait for days and keep observing the changes. After all, ice and methane have been sitting in the space for millions of years.” Professor Thalappil Pradeep, a senior author of the study was quoted as saying in the statement. The paper was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS).

Parents’ job stress affects kid’s health? NEW YORK: Besides economic resources, parents’ autonomy in the workplace can help boost the health of their children, suggests a research. While it was long known that sick children can affect a company’s bottom line, less is known about the impact a parent’s work life has on their children’s health. For the study, the researchers, from University of Houston in the US, looked at the so-called “self-regulatory resources” or the amount of selfcontrol parents bring to parenting. the couple plans and decides on the wedding venue mutually. Your wedding outfit should not go off trend Choosing a perfect outfit for your wedding can be daunting. For the latest trends, surf online but do not forget to raid the offline markets too. Offline stores give you the chance to try out the attire before you make the big purchase. The time of the wedding function should also be an important factor impacting your attire choice, especially the color of the outfit. Choose your vendors sensibly Behind every fantastic wellplanned wedding, there is a team of hard-working vendors. Do thorough research about the vendors, their reputation and track records before you finalize them.

‘Social media usage linked to depression in girls’ IANS, LONDON

T

eenage girls who spend more time on social media have a higher risk of depression than boys, a study has found. Researchers led by Yvonne Kelly from the University College London (UCL) found that almost 40 per cent of girls who spend more than five hours a day on social media show symptoms of depression, Xinhua news agency reported. However, the rate is much lower for boys, which is less than 15 per cent. According to Simon Wessely, former president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the underlying

Obesity can cut short your dog’s lives LONDON: If you thought that obesity affects only humans, you may be wrong. It can also shorten lives of your canine friends, finds a research. The research, from University of Liverpool, reveals the lifespan of overweight dogs was up to two-andhalf years shorter when compared to ideal-weight dogs. “Owners are often unaware that their dog is overweight, and many may not realize the impact that it can have on their health,” said Alex German, Professor at university. “What they may not know is that if their beloved pet is too heavy, they are more likely to suffer from other problems such as joint disease, breathing issues. These health issues can significantly impact how long they live,” he added.

15

The study, published in Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, examined more than 50,000 dogs across 12 of the most popular dog breeds. “For many owners, giving food, particularly tasty table scraps and tidbits, is the way we show affection for our pets,” German said, noting, “being careful about what you feed your dog could go a long way to keeping them in good shape and enabling them to be around for many years to come”.

processes of this phenomenon are not well understood. The researchers “still cannot defi-

nitely say that social media usage causes poor mental health, although the evidence is starting to point in

that direction”, The Guardian quoted Wessely as saying. For the study, published in the journal EClinicalMedicine, the team included interviews with almost 11,000 14-year-olds. They found that two-fifths of girls have suffered online harassments or online bullying compared to one-quarter of boys. Compared to 28 per cent of boys, 40 per cent of girls have suffered sleep loss because of online habits. Girls were found more likely to have low self-esteem and body weight dissatisfaction, and be unhappy with their appearance, than boys.

esides affecting health, prolonged exposure to air pollution can also reduce employee’s productivity, finds a study. The study showed that daily fluctuations in pollution did not immediately affect the productivity of workers. However, a definite drop in output was witnessed when measured for more prolonged exposures of up to 30 days, the researchers said. In addition, working in a highly polluted setting for long periods of time could affect your mood or disposition to work. “Our aim with this research was to broaden the understanding of air pollution in ways that have not been explored. We typically think that firms benefit from lax pollution regulations, by saving on

emission control equipment and the like; here we document an adverse effect on the productivity of their work force,” said Alberto Salvo, Associate Professor from

National University of Singapore (NUS). For the study, published in the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, the team gathered information from textile factories in China which involved interviewing managers before obtaining access to data. They compared how many pieces of fabric each worker produced each day to measures of the concentration of particulate matter that the worker was exposed to over time. “We found that an increase in PM2.5, by 10 micrograms per cubic metre sustained over 25 days, reduces daily output by one per cent, harming firms and workers,” said Haoming Liu, Associate Professor of the varsity. “The effects are subtle but highly significant,” said Liu.

Yes, I have experienced life and that way I can say that winning the battle (against cancer) has perhaps made me a better performer. Shot with astounding finesse, ‘Uri’ is worth your wait

W

ars often rage within the soldiers’ hearts, specially when they belong to army families. In one of this significant war film’s highpoints, Major Vihaan Singh Shergill, played by the self-effacing Vicky Kaushal, gathers his troop together somewhere in Kashmir before striking surgically in the country next door (okay, Pakistan. There. I said it). These are soldiers who have lost loved ones in terror attacks, and their blood boils. Uri brings the blood of crossborder tension to a boil but avoids a spillover. There is a rush of patriotic pride in the product — and why should there not be? — but it is reined-in, curbed and never allowed to spill over in a gush of irrepressible jingoism. If you want

Film: “Uri”; Director: Aditya Dhar; Starring: Vicky Kaushal, Mohit Raina, Paresh Rawal, Yami Gautam; Rating: ****

to see soldiers dancing around a bonfire singing about how much they love their country and how much miss their loved ones, then you’ve got the wrong war film. Yes, these soldiers love their country. But family comes first. And when Vihaan’s brother-in-law (Mohit Raina, making a striking

big-screen debut) is killed in a vivid recreation of that real-life murderous attack at the Uri army base, Vihaan channels his personal loss to seek revenge on behalf of the country. It may not be the most patriotic of purposes. But it gives a certain disingenuous believability to the mission.

All through its roomy yet tightlywound running-time Uri confidently gives us people and situations from that golden chapter in BJP’s existence when India voluntarily forefeited the politics of pacifism to take on the enemy headlong. Uri is shot with astounding finesse by cinematographer Mitesh Mirchandani. Uri is a work of many achievements. But to me, a film about national pride without a single shot of the Indian flag is the biggest miracle since the invention of the motionpicture camera. — Subhash K. Jha

Issam Abbas with wife Rima Abbas & kids Ali Abbas, Isabella Abbas & Giselle Abbas

BY A STAFF WRITER EXINGTON, KY— Five family members from Michigan were killed early Sunday after a suspected drunken driver heading the wrong way on Interstate 75 in Kentucky struck their vehicle, authorities said. The southbound pickup truck driver being driven in the northbound lanes struck the family’s SUV at around 2:30 a.m. in Lexington, Lexington police said. The SUV caught fire and all five occupants of that vehicle died, along with the pickup truck’s driver. “I thought I was seeing something, honestly,” Kenneth DeGraaf, a witness who saw the pickup truck driving toward him prior to the fiery wreck, told “He was in the center lane. I was in the center lane. I had to merge out of the way at the last second to

get to the right lane. I mean, he was flying. Absolutely flying.” The family from Northville, Michigan, was returning from a vacation in Florida, the Fayette County coroner’s office said. The coroner identified the family members as Issam Abbas, 42 and Rima Abbas, 38, along with their children, a boy Ali Abbas, 14; and girls Isabella Abbas, 13, and Giselle Abbas, 7. The coroner’s office identified the pickup truck driver as Joey Lee Bailey, 41, of Georgetown. Authorities believe Bailey was driving under the influence and toxicology tests were planned. Lexington police were asking the public for help in their investigation. According to the Islamic Center of America of Dearborn, Michigan, set the funeral services for the family at the center.

Convicted Killer of Sikh Cab Driver Tries to Flee Courtroom BY A STAFF WRITER ONNER COUNTY, ID— A 21-year-old man, who pleaded guilty last November to fatally stabbing a Sikh Indian American cab driver, was sentenced to life in prison January 3 in Bonner County, Idaho courthouse. Jacob Corban Coleman, of Puyallup, Washington, had been facing the death penalty for fatally stabbing 22-year-old Indian American taxi driver Gagandeep Singh, 27 times with a hunting knife on Aug. 28, 2017. Coleman will have to serve 40 years of his sentence before he is eligible for parole. He had been charged with 1st degree murder with an enhancement for using a deadly weapon. According to reports, Coleman, who appeared in the courtroom in shackles, tried to flee as his sentence was pronounced, but was quickly detained by law enforcement. Prosecutors dropped the death penalty

as part of a plea deal. According to police reports, on the

morning of August 28, 2017, Coleman flew from Seattle to Spokane, Washington, to

begin a new semester at Gonzaga University, but was told he was not admitted. He then took a bus back to the Spokane airport, and tried to get an Uber to take him to Hope, Idaho, about 90 miles away. When he could not get an Uber to go the distance, Coleman called United Cab company and got Singh. About 75 miles into the ride, Coleman asked Singh to stop at a Walmart in Ponderay, Idaho. There he purchased a hunting knife. The two continued the drive, and stopped at a Conoco gas station in Clark, Idaho, where Coleman allegedly attacked Singh. The killer was still in the cab when the first deputies arrived on scene. Police found Coleman holding the knife in the cab with Singh lying dead at his feet. Investigators testified that he watched Singh bleed to death. Coleman later told police he became homicidal after the events of the day. He told investigators that he confessed his suicidal impulses to Singh during the ride.

DePaul Student Kidnapped, Robbed Gurinder Singh Khalsa to Receive Rosa Parks Trailblazer Award at Gunpoint Near Campus BY A STAFF WRITER ISHERS, IN— An Indian-American Sikh man in Fishers, Indiana, is set to receive the Rosa Parks Trailblazer Award. Khalsa was named the award recipient based on his efforts in changing the Transportation Security Administration’s policy regarding turbans, the report noted. In 2007, Khalsa was forcibly removed from the Buffalo Niagara International Airport in New York after he refused to unwrap his turban. As a member of the Sikh community, the turban is one of five sacred articles of faith. When Khalsa would not remove his turban in the airport, he said he was taken away by security, it said. TSA officials informed Khalsa he would encounter the same issue at every airport in the nation, so he took a two-hour taxi ride to Canada, where he immediately contacted a friend with an ethnic media organization. He was interviewed on live TV, and calls from the Sikh community began pouring in, “That’s how I started,” he said Khalsa met with members of the U.S. Congress and then traveled across the U.S. to acquire at least 20,000 signatures to change TSA’s policy. He collected 67,000 signatures, the report said. “That is why I am getting the Trailblazer

F BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO,IL- There are new safety concerns at DePaul University’s Lincoln Park campus after police say a group of thieves kidnapped and robbed a student at gunpoint. Police say a 19-year-old student was kidnapped and robbed at gunpoint Tuesday night behind the McDonald’s at Lincoln and Fullerton. At approximately 8 p.m., the student was walking down an alley behind the restaurant when police say two men and a woman approached him and made him get

into a black car and drove away. The robbers then took his cell phone and ID and told him to run away. The student ran a few blocks until he found a security guard in the 400 block of South Pulaski Road and called 911, police said. The DePaul students say they were alarmed to hear it. According to police and an alert sent out by DePaul Public Safety officials.. Anyone with information about the incident was asked to contact police or DePaul public safety at (773) 325-7777.

Award,” he said. “They not only changed the policy, they also had our (Sikh) community people engage with those TSA checkpoints all over the U.S. to give them the training and let them know how we need to be more sensitive and accommodating to the article of faith. That is the beauty. That makes me in my heart feel we are one of the best countries on the face of the earth.” Jose Lusende, vice president for Strategy and External Relation of Recorder Media Group, said the Rosa Parks Trailblazer Award is one of three special awards the Indiana Minority Business Magazine offers.

‘Indian women less active than men’ Indian women burn less than 50% calories that people should burn through physical activity IANS, BENGALURU

W

hile men and women in India are largely physically inactive, women were found to burn less calories than their male counterparts, finds a survey of over one million Indians. The survey — “Physical activity levels of Indians” by HealthifyMe, the domestic health and fitness app — showed that 53 per cent of Indian women are “inactive” and burn less than 50 per cent of calories that a person should burn through physical activity, daily, as against 44 per cent of men. The average calorie burn budget of Indian men is 476 calories per day vs. women’s 374 calories per day, out of which men burn 55 per cent (262) while women burn just

44 per cent (165). Over 30 per cent men are “active”, burning more than 80 per cent of their calories, and only 24 per cent women are “active” and 22 per

cent “mildly active”. “It is a matter of grave concern that almost half of all Indians are inactive and burn less than even 50 per cent of their calorie budget.

‘Diet more important than exercise’ IANS, NEW YORK

F

or those planning to hit the gym to lose weight, take note. A new study suggests that diet is far more important than physical activity including walking, fidgeting and formal exercise. The reason is because exercising increases appetite especially with prolonged endurance exercise or with weight lifting that can ultimately sabotage the best of intentions, the CNN reported. People who lose weight gradually (about 1 to 2 pounds per week) are more successful at keeping weight off, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 10% of our calories are burned digesting the food we eat

exercise,” nutritionist Lisa Drayer was quoted as saying to CNN. All of your “calories in” come from the food you eat and the beverages you drink, but only a portion of your “calories out” are lost through exercise, Drayer said. The average person — excluding professional athletes — burns five per cent to 15% of their daily calories through exercise, said Alexxai Kravitz, Investigator at the National Institute of Diabetes and DigesDiet is far more important than physical activity including walking to tive and Kidney Diseases in the US. It is not equal to food intake, reduce weight. (Photo: Pexels) which accounts for 100% of the and roughly 10% to 30% are lost body’s energy intake, said Kravitz. via physical activity, the study said. All this is not to say that exercise “It could not be more true. What does not have its place. It is certainyou omit from your diet is more ly important for building strength important than how much you and muscle mass and flexibility.

Inactivity and unhealthy food habits can lead to several lifestyle diseases like obesity, hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol,” Tushar Vashisht, Co-founder and CEO, HealthifyMe said, in a statement this week. “From our experience, we are already witnessing an increase of

such cases amongst people as early as in their 30s. “Everyday physical activity and good eating habits can play a crucial role in avoiding and even reversing such diseases. It is time that we start taking ‘working out’ more seriously,” Vashisht said. Further, the survey found that Tier 1 cities continue to be more active than Tier 2 cities, burning 407 calories in a day versus 371 in Tier 2. Bengaluru, Gurugram and Noida were found as the most fitness conscious, while Kolkata, Jaipur, Lucknow and Ahmedabad were the least active cities. The data is based on the activity auto-synced through fitness-bands or smartphone apps as well as selfreported workouts from over one million users, aged between 25 and 35.

Spinach-protein may offer treatment for alcohol abuse NEW YORK: A large protein found in spinach may aid in the development of new medications for millions around the world dealing with alcohol use disorders, chronic pain and mood disorders, researchers said. The study, led by researchers from the Purdue University, discovered two peptides which are naturally metabolic products of Rubisco -- a large protein found in many plants like spinach -- that may aid in the development of new medications. “These disorders are currently not adequately managed,” said Richard van

Rijn, Assistant Professor at Purdue. “Better medications that take a more holistic approach and produce fewer side effects will be beneficial. “We discovered that these peptides selectively activate the known beneficial pathways without activating the ‘side-effect pathways’ of the receptor,” van Rijn added. The discovery, published in the European Neuropsychopharmacolgy, aims to develop molecules that only activate the cellular signalling pathways associated with their therapeutic effect. —IANS

Morning women more likely to become pregnant than ‘night owls’: Study IANS, LONDON

P Almost three-quarters of "larks" became pregnant but only around a third of night owls conceived, (Photo: Pexels)

lanning motherhood? Becoming a morning person could make it easier to conceive than for night owls, says a study. It could be because “morning people” have better chances of getting pregnant because they tend to be healthier with fewer illnesses, explained researchers from the University of Warwick in the UK. “By and large, larks are more likely to have a healthy lifestyle than night owls. They are less likely to smoke, to be overweight and to suffer from diabetes and cardio-

vascular disease, all of which could make it harder to fall pregnant,” lead author Professor Geraldine Hartshorne, was quoted as saying to the Daily Mail. “Healthy lifestyles are already discussed with women trying to conceive, but thinking about whether you are a lark or a night owl might be another way to change lifestyle habits which affect the chances of conceiving,” Hartshorne added. For the study, the team followed more than 100 women and asked them what time they naturally went to sleep and woke up, then

followed them as they tried to start a family through IVF. The results, presented at the annual conference of the British Fertility Society, show almost threequarters of “larks” became pregnant. But only around a third of night owls conceived, although the authors caution that more research is needed in a larger group of women. “This is a pilot study and we now want to monitor people’s sleep and hormone levels with tracking devices to see how much their body clocks relate to pregnancy,” Hartshorne said.
