No state of union speech for Trump US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she would not host US President Donald Trump to deliver a state of union speech before government reopens announcing his intent to deliver the speech in front of a joint session of Congress in the chamber of the House on January 29.

T
he US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday said that she would not host US President Donald Trump to deliver a state of union speech before government reopens, all but rejecting Trump’s intent to deliver the speech on January 29. “I am writing to inform you that the House of Representatives will not consider a concurrent resolution authorizing the president’s state of the union address in the House chamber until the government has opened,” Pelosi said. Pelosi said when she extended the invitation on January 3 for Trump to deliver the speech, “there was no
BRIEFS SC not to intervene on Dreamers’ behalf WASHINGTON: The US Supreme Court once again refused to intervene in any way in the dispute over the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme, which currently protects some 690,000 young undocumented people known as Dreamers from deportation. In a brief statement, the high court announced its decision not to review the case, thus rejecting a request to do so by the Department of Justice, Efe reported. In practice, the decision means that DACA remains in force and US immigration services must continue accepting renewal requests for that immigration authorization.
Trump’s transgender military ban okayed WASHINGTON: The Supreme Court allowed US President Donald Trump’s transgender military ban to go into effect on Tuesday, dealing a blow to LGBT activists who call the ban cruel and irrational. The Justices did not rule on the merits of the case, but will allow the ban to go forward while the lower courts work through it. The four liberal justices on the Court objected to allowing the administration’s policy banning most transgender people from serving in the military to go into effect, CNN reported. The policy, first announced by the President in July 2017 via Twitter, and later officially released by then-Secretary of Defence James Mattis in 2018, blocks individuals who have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria. — IANS

thought that the government would still be shut down” on January 29, reports Xinhua news agency. The partial government shutdown, triggered by a partisan
impasse over Trump’s demand for funding of a border wall, now stretched to the 33rd day. Pelosi’s letter came in response to Trump’s letter earlier on the day
Pelosi on January 16 asked Trump to consider postponing the speech due to the government shutdown, which has left 800,000 federal workers on furlough or working without pay. Trump said the Department of Homeland Security assured him
that there will not be any security risks due to the government shutdown, as suggested by Pelosi. Trump told the press after seeing Pelosi’s response that he was “not surprised.” “It’s really a shame what’s happening with the Democrats. They’ve become radicalized.” The back and forth casts a shadow on the prospects that Trump and congressional Democrats will strike a deal in the near future to reopen the government. The state of the union speech is an annual ritual by US presidents to announce their policy goals for the coming year. It is traditionally delivered in the chamber of the House of Representatives to a joint session of Congress at the end of January, and is broadcast to the nation.

fake news said I should not go there. This year, because of the shutdown, I decided not to go, and the fake news said I should be there. The fact is that the people understand the media better than the media understands them!” Trump
tweeted before Kerry’s call to resign. Kerry, who was Secretary of State during President Barack Obama’s second term, also criticized Trump for “his insane decision” to pull out of the Paris climate accord in June 2017, for which “people will die”. “I wish there was a lawsuit capacity that could hold people liable for such an insane decision as he has made, which is going to cost lives,” he said. “People will die because of the President’s decision, and billions of dollars of damage will be done to property.” Kerry also accused the President of lying about the consequences of pulling out of the accord. Trump claimed at the time that he was leaving to pursue “fair treatment” and so that foreign leaders would no longer “laugh at us”.

He managed to top that number just in the first three weeks of 2019. Before the midterm elections in October, he made more than 1,200 false or misleading claims. The biggest source of misleading claims is immigration, with a tally that has grown with the addition of 300 immigration claims in the past three weeks, for a total of 1,433, the Fact Checker said. In the President’s immigration address on January 19, the last day of his second year in office, there were 12 false or misleading claims. According to Fact Checker, there were only 82 days or about 11 percent of the time that there were recorded no claims. “These were often days when the President golfed,” it added.

S former Secretary of State John Kerry has said if he can speak to President Donald Trump directly, he would tell him to “resign”. Trump was supposed to attend the World Economic Forum here to deliver an address, but he pulled out because of the partial government shutdown that has become the longest in US history. Asked during a World Economic Forum panel on Tuesday, what he would say to Trump if he were seated across from him, Kerry gave a one-word answer: “Resign”. “He doesn’t take any of this seriously,” the 2004 Democratic nominee for President said on the panel, adding that he doesn’t think Trump had the “ability” to have deep conversations, the Washing-

The daily’s Fact Checker’s database analyses, categorises and tracks every suspect statement uttered by the President, it said in the report on Monday. In 2018, he made an “astonishing” 6,000-plus such claims. The President averaged nearly

Priyanka takes political plunge The aim is to take on SP-BSP alliance that pushed the Congress into a corner
IANS, NEW DELHI/AMETHI
P
laying his surprise trump card, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday appointed his sister Priyanka Gandhi the party General Secretary in charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh, where the SP-BSP alliance ahead of the Lok Sabha polls had pushed the Congress into a corner ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Priyanka Gandhi’s appointment, a gamble by Rahul Gandhi throwing her into full-fledged politics, is aimed at galvanizing Congress cadres in the state where it has been marginalized over the years and where the BJP won a whopping 71 of the 80 seats Lok Sabha seats in 2014. Shortly after the appointment, Rahul Gandhi told reporters that naming Priyanka Gandhi and Jotiraditya Scindia as General Secretaries for Uttar Pradesh was a “big step” to spread the party’s “real”

ideology for poor and weaker sections and to rebuild its base. She will now ensure that a Congress Chief Minister gets to rule the state, he added. However, Gandhi sought to strike a conciliatory note towards the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan
Samaj Party (BSP), saying the Congress will cooperate with them to defeat the BJP in whatever ways possible. They are welcome to talk to us, he said. With this, Priyanka Gandhi, married to businessman Robert Vadra and mother of two children,
makes a full-fledged entry into politics casting aside her earlier role that was mainly confined to the constituencies of Sonia Gandhi (Rae Bareli) and Rahul Gandhi (Amethi). From the first week of February she will assume her new charge in eastern Uttar Pradesh, considered the home turf of Chief Minister and BJP’s ‘Hindutva’ poster-boy Yogi Adityanath. In an organizational shake-up ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the party also announced the appointment of Jyotiraditya Scindia, MP from Guna in Madhya Pradesh, as the Congress General Secretary in charge of western Uttar Pradesh. Speculation of Priyanka Gandhi contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from her mother’s constituency Rae Bareli immediately gained ground. Replying to a question on this, Rahul Gandhi said it depends on her. “We are not going to play on
the backfoot. We have not played on the backfoot in Gujarat also. We do politics for people. So we will play on the front foot. “I have given them (Priyanka and Scindia) a mission in Uttar Pradesh for spreading the real ideology, the ideology for the poor and weaker sections. Priyanka and Scindia are powerful leaders and I have full faith that they will work and give what Uttar Pradesh needs and what its youth needs. We will have to build our space. “I fully respect Akhileshji and Mayawatiji. They have done their alliance and they are not our enemies. We are fighting together. The objective of all the three parties are the same of defeating the BJP. We will fight with all our might. If they (SP-BSP) want to talk to us, it is welcome,” Gandhi told reporters in Amethi. This is perhaps the first time the party has split the organizational responsibilities of its General Secretary in Uttar Pradesh into zones.
CBI books V.N. Dhoot, Priyanka’s entry refuels debate on dynasty Chanda Kochhar IANS, NEW DELHI
MUMBAI: In a significant development, the CBI on Thursday lodged an FIR against ex-ICICI Bank chief Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar and industrialist V.N. Dhoot besides four companies, and raided four locations in Maharashtra in connection with a Rs 3,250 crore loan involving the Videocon Group and ICICI Bank, informed sources said here. The raids were conducted shortly after the Central Bureau of Investigation registered an FIR naming former ICICI Bank Managing Directorcum-CEO Chanda Kochhar, her husband and NuPower Renewables Pvt Ltd Managing Director Deepak Kochhar and Videocon Group Managing director Dhoot in the case dating back to 2012. Besides, four companies have been named in the CBI FIR: NuPower Renewables Pvt Ltd, Supreme Energy Pvt Ltd, Videocon International Electronics Ltd and Videocon Industries Ltd. The FIR has booked them under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act as the accused allegedly “sanctioned loans to private companies in a criminal conspiracy with other accused to cheat ICICI Bank”. The FIR comes in the wake of a preliminary enquiry (PE) lodged on March 31, 2018, against Deepak Kochhar, Videocon group officials

and others to determine whether any wrongdoing was involved in the sanctioning of the loan by the ICICI Bank as part of a consortium, a senior CBI official said. The raids were carried out simultaneously at the offices of the four (aforementioned) companies in south Mumbai and one location belonging to Videocon in Aurangabad. The CBI official said that a PE is conducted to ascertain if there is sufficient evidence of wrongdoing for a case to be taken up for detailed investigation. If the evidence suggests that a cognizable offense has been committed, then this is converted into a regular full-fledged FIR. —IANS
riyanka Gandhi’s formal debut in politics has re-ignited a fierce debate on political dynasties and opinion is sharply divided if family lineage is a slur or works as a spur in public life. Going by the success rate of leaders with family roots, it seems that political upbringing does help in para-drop launches of electoral careers, proving that dynasties have paradoxical existence in democracies. The newest member of the Gandhi family has walked onto the political turf carrying a legacy of five generations but no political party except perhaps the Communist bloc can claim to be dynastyfree. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose ordinary tea-seller image had a mojo effect in last elections, has often mocked political families. But he has not been able to get rid of what is often considered to be a menace in his own party even though ordinary backgrounds of their leaders are routinely projected as a unique selling proposition of the ruling brigade. Even a cursory look at the composition of the current Lok Sabha gives away the family roots of many politicians who are popular faces. Among the second generation leaders include newly appointed interim Finance Minister Piyush Goyal, the son of the late BJP Treasurer Ved Prakash Goyal. In fact, there are many young BJP MPs

Appointment poses no challenge: Rajnath LUCKNOW: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday made light of appointment of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the Congress’s General Secretary in-charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh and termed it an “internal matter” of that party. He said he does look upon the Congress as a challenge in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. “Priyanka Gandhi has now been formally tasked with some assignment though she has been active in politics for the last 15-20 years,” Singh added. — IANS
who have taken over the baton from their fathers. Anurag Thakur from Himachal Pradesh is the son of former state

Union Minister Maneka Gandhi and her son Varun Gandhi, though extension of the Gandhi lineage, hold the BJP flag in Parliament. Minister of State for Home Kiran Rijiju is the son of Rinchin Kharu, who was the first pro-tem speak of Arunachal Pradesh. The problem in Congress is at another level. Under the umbrella Gandhi dynasty, there are several sub-families. The dangers of politicizing quota The BJP’s intent to introduce quota for the general category based on economic criteria is unlikely to end friction because there will always be a counter move into the Indian Institute of Technology. A Dalit groom had to be accompanied by over 300 policemen because he wanted to ride a horse to his wedding venue - something that the upper caste residents of his Uttar Pradesh village had objected to. These are stray cases that have been reported and represent the proverbial tip of the iceberg
ANANDA MAJUMDAR, NEW DELHI
T
he governments decision to implement 10 per cent quota in jobs and educational institutions in the general category has the two-fold purpose of playing up to the Sangh Parivars upper caste constituency and, more importantly, holding off the prospect of organized violence that an upper caste-led agitation could possibly trigger. The antiMandal protests following the V.P. Singh governments decision to implement the Mandal Commission report on reservation to the Other Backward Classes in government jobs and educational institutions provide a telling background of how violent and tragic such an agitation could become. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has obviously been thinking ahead in implementing these reservations. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which provides the ideological leadership to the saffron family, has been against caste-based reservations, insisting that economic criteria should instead be the basis for this. Four years and more into the tenure of a rightwing government where the BJP government did not

He would have realized that fighting allegations is a bit like firefighting because you don’t know where a fire will start out but once it is there, you will have to rush out and douse it. That can sap your strength. Then,

need the support of allies — troublesome or benign — to stay on in power, failure to counter the socalled Left liberal discourse on affirmative action with a version of its own would have appeared to be reneging on a promise. Following the recent losses in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat helpfully reminded the Modi government that what they were witnessing was an upper caste backlash. Of course, it is a problematic
premise to consider only the economic criteria as the basis for reservations in India. A perfunctory Google search of the number of Dalit youth who have been attacked and sometimes grievously wounded for no more than sporting a moustache would show what they are up against. Two Dalit boys were attacked in their homes because they were felicitated by then Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav for cracking the joint entrance examination for admission
of the debilitating disadvantages that people from the lower castes routinely face in trying to rise above their condition. Introducing quota for the upper castes based on economic criteria could, meanwhile, open up new fronts against the BJP even as it tries to close off new ones. As the BJP tries to expand its base, from being the one that aimed to come to power on its own steam, it is now the one that has to be beaten. While it might have the upper hand in having state power at its disposal to present its case better, it is also easily the target of criticism from political
the nature of ringfencing oneself against allegations can get a little boring and predictive - as has happened now with the repetitive attacks on the Nehru-Gandhis, which has lost its novelty in the age of 24x7 television coverage. The intent to introduce quota for the general category based on economic criteria is unlikely to end friction because there will always be a counter move. The pro-upper caste move might help the BJP get traction in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan — states in the Hindi belt where caste politics plays a big hand.
Mamata’s opposition rally not enough The analyst say most of the opposition leaders attended rally to fulfil their personal agenda, saying Mamata has to give personal agendas suitable political articulation to lead them
MILINDA GHOSH ROY, KOLKATA
E
ven as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee went all out to bring leaders of 23 opposition parties on one stage and launched a stinging attack against the Narendra Modi regime at her ‘United India Rally’, political analysts said it might not be enough to catapult her as the prime face of anti-BJP politics as her party lacks a national presence. Terming Banerjee “a national leader in her own merit”, political analyst Udayan Bandyopadhyay said the January 19 mega rally might have added more significance to Banerjee’s continuous tirade against the BJP government.
But it is too early to predict whether she can emerge as the face of the opposition, with her party’s geographical limitation also being a hindrance. “At the moment the rally might have added significance to her efforts. But her Trinamool Congress does not have any presence outside West Bengal so practically the party can’t have a lot of impact on national politics. But it is true that the more Lok Sabha seats Trinamool gets, the easier it would become for them to bargain in the post-election scenario,” Bandyopadhyay told IANS. “She was rail minister under two governments and also a long term MP. She is a national leader in her
own merit. But it is too early to say that she would be the face of the opposition. The alliance would need more time to materialize,” he noted. The analyst claimed most of the opposition leaders attended Banerjee’s rally to fulfil their personal agenda and said Banerjee has to give these personal agendas suitable political articulation to lead them. “Most of the leaders have come together to protect their self-interests. They want to save their parties from getting marginalised. Leaders like (former prime minister H.D.) Deve Gowda and (Karnataka chief minister H.D.) Kumaraswami of the JD(S) came
here so that their government in Karnataka can be saved,” he said. “If she can give a political articulation to these self-interests, it can be of a different significance but the parties have not reached that point yet. That would be a post-election phenomenon,” said Bandopadhyay, a professor of Political Science in Bangabasi College. Another political analyst, Anil Kumar Jana, claimed that Banerjee’s effort to lead an anti-BJP front may fail as most leaders have come to the alliance to put pressure on the BJP and might go the other way if they are helped out by the ruling regime. The Bengal BJP leadership, on the other hand, said the people would reject Banerjee.

Gabbard, a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, told CNN in an interview on Sunday that
American leaders must meet foreign leaders “if we are serious about the pursuit of peace and securing our country”. She was earlier criticized for voicing skepticism that the Assad regime was behind the chemical weapons attacks. o be a premier investment destination, the Karnataka government began identifying farmlands in rural areas to set up industrial units, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said on Thursday. “To make Karnataka a premier investment destination, our government has begun the process of identifying large acres of farmlands in rural areas to set up industrial units,” Kumaraswamy said at a trade event here. Unveiling the Indian machine tool manufacturers expo (Imtex) at the Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre, the Chief Minister said his government would soon set up an integrated facility for machine tool industry to create an ecosystem and make it competitive. “As a joint initiative of the state and central governments, the Tumakuru Machine Tool Park will be set up in about 500 acres of land at Vasantha Narasapura industrial area in the district,” Kumaraswamy told the gathering. Tumakuru is about 70 km northwest of Bengaluru. For ease of doing business, the government has initiated a host of new programs and events like Imtex and Tooltex to hasten industry-led growth. “Our state’s technology engagement has attracted investments from the across the country and abroad,

The CM said his government would soon set up an integrated facility for machine tool industry to create an ecosystem making Karnataka a favourite for investing in disruptive technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Automation, Data Analytics, Machine Learning, 3D Printing and Robatics,” said Kumaraswamy. As a pioneer in industrial devel-
opment, Karnataka has been following a new industrial policy since 2014 for enabling the manufacturing sector grow at 12 per cent and attract Rs 5 lakh crore investments and create 15-lakh jobs. “Karnataka has recently been ranked by the central government as one among the country’s top three states for highest employment generation,” said Kumaraswamy. While Ganesh is an MLA from Kampli in Ballari district, Singh is a legislator from Vijayanagara Assembly segment in the same district. “Ganesh will be arrested soon as the state police is searching for him. Nobody is above law and the Congress MLA is no exception,” state Home Minister M.B. Patil told reporters here on Wednesday. The incident has “ruined” the image of legislators in the southern state, remarked Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar. “The Congress has been trying to cover up the issue, which has ruined the image of all legislators in the state,” Shettar told the media. icking an honest officer as the chief of CBI isn’t a panacea to rid India’s top investigation agency of all ills, especially when its lower rung officers are shoddy, corrupt and prone to political manipulation, according to retired Rear Admiral B.R. Menon, whose book on his legal battle with the CBI was released recently. Speaking to reporters here, Menon, who is promoting his book in Goa, also “hoped” that the Rafale deal, which the opposition has claimed is linked to the removal of Central Bureau of Investigation Director Alok Varma, “is a correct deal” and that the Indian Air Force gets its fighter jets at the right time and the right price. “The CBI head himself being non-corrupt is not enough. the people down below in the CBI, the Joint Directors, Directors, Additional Directors, Superintendents of Police should be non-corrupt,” Menon said. “So, if the top man himself is very good and non-corrupt, every
officer in line must be selected in the same manner and trained properly. I think the CBI younger lot are so illiterate that when they come in a court of law, the case fails and that is a loss of face for the CBI. I would recommend training

“Honesty victimised, CBI politicized” is an account of a 13-yearold struggle to exonerate himself from the CBI chargesheet and the trial which ensued. Menon claims that the CBI is used by politicians from the states as well as the Centre and that values which a common man ought to attribute to an elite national agency do not exist any more. He added that in his case the CBI did not have the courage to withstand political pressure, which forced it to prosecute him. “I could not agree to many small requests which came from very big Ministers. Those are the reasons why it all added up to a situation like this,” Menon said. The CBI, he said, has a shortage of officers and the agency should use its resources to target the “big fish”.

India thrash
New Zealand IANS, NAPIER
A
brilliant all-round effort helped India thrash New Zealand by eight wickets via the Duckworth-Lewis (D/L) method in the first One Day International match at the McLean Park here on Wednesday. Asked to field first, the Indian bowlers were right on the money as they restricted the hosts to a paltry score and then Indian batters displayed a clinical performance to hand India a 1-0 lead in the five match series. Chasing 157, Indian openers Rohit Sharma (11) and Shikhar Dhawan (75 not out) started on a positive note, forging a crucial 41runs partnership before Rohit was dismissed by Doug Bracewell in the 10th over. He was caught by Martin Guptil in the slips. Just after the fall of Rohit’s wicket, sun stopped the play for around 30 minutes. The sun rays were directly getting into the play-
ers eyes which prompted the umpires to suspend the proceedings. The break saw the match officials reduce the match by one over and the new target for India was revised to 156 from 49 overs. After the restart, skipper Virat Kohli (45) joined Dhawan in the middle and the duo hammered the New Zealand bowlers all round the park. In the process, Dhawan reached the landmark of 5,000 ODI runs and became the second fastest Indian to reach the milestone. It seemed like the Delhi duo will remain unbeaten and complete the match with ease but in the 29th over, Kohli was sent packing by Lockie Ferguson when scoreboard was reading 132. He was caught behind by Tom Latham. New batsman Ambati Rayudu (13 not out) and Dhawan then joined hands and completed the proceeding with 85 balls remaining. For New Zealand, Ferguson and Bracewell took one wicket each. Earlier, India rode chinaman
Serena doesn’t blame twisted ankle for loss to Pliskova MELBOURNE: Serena Williams said her 4-6 6-4 5-7 loss to Karolina Pliskova in a quarter-final of the Australian Open on Wednesday was because her opponent played some incredible tennis and not because she twisted her ankle in the third set. At one time, the 16th seeded Williams was on the verge of victory at 4-6, 6-4, 5-1 when the Czech trailed her before the American rolled her left ankle and then lost six straight games in a match that lasted two hours and 10 minutes, reports Efe news. “I think she (Pliskova) just kinda started playing really, really good. I don’t think it had anything to do with my ankle per se,” said the 23-time Grand Slam winner. “Karolina literally played lights out starting 5-1, 40-30. Literally I have never seen anything like it,” she said. The former world No.1 said she did not make any mistakes and stayed aggressive in the game. “I can’t say I choked on those match points. She literally played her best tennis ever on those shots,” Williams added. Williams also didn’t call for med-

Kuldeep Yadav and pacer Mohammed Shami’s exceptional bowling effort to restrict New Zealand to a paltry 157 runs. While Kuldeep’s figures were 4/39, Shami was also phenomenal with the leather, scalping three Kiwi wickets conceding just 19 runs from his six overs. Yuzvendra Chahal and Kedar Jadhav picked two and one wicket, respectively. Other than New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson (64), no other batsmen put up a fight against the disciplined Indian attack. Opting to bat, the hosts had the worst possible start as Shami struck early sending back both the openers -- Martin Guptill (5) and Colin Munro (8), cheaply. Newcomers Williamson and Ross Taylor (24) then tried to rescue their side from the early damage, taking New Zealand past the 50-run mark in 13.3 overs. However, Taylor’s stay was cut short by Chahal in the 15th over with the hosts at 52/3. With the addition of just 24

runs in the Kiwi scorecard, Chahal struck again to dismiss incoming batsman Tom Latham (11). Jadhav and Shami then joined the party as they sent back Henry Nicholls (12) and Mitchell Santner (14), leaving the hosts reeling at 133/6. Williamson, however, continued to show resistance and kept one end safe, but lacked support from the other end.

ndian tennis star Rohan Bopanna has blamed the system for not producing quality players and demanded more tournaments in the country itself. Bopanna, who had bad outings in the both the categories (men’s and mixed doubles) in the ongoing Australia Open here, also said the country needs to have more academies and strong grassroots programmes to produce more tennis players. “We dont have system in place to generate that many of players. And not only the system but we need to have tournaments in India. We have only one ATP tournament and two challengers in India which is not enough. If you look at Europe or USA, they have 25 to 30 weeks of just tournaments alone which makes a difference,” Bopanna told IANS. “Tennis is an expensive sport so to travel constantly week and week out is tough. Gallstones: Diagnosis and Treatment BY DR. ATUL NANDA 4What is gallbladder and its function in human body? 4Gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ in the right upper abdomen, just beneath your liver. The function of Gallbladder is to store bile. Liver produces bile to help in fat digestion. When you are not eating and do not need bile, the bile is stored in the gallbladder. 4What are Gallstones and how do they form? 4Gallstones are concretions formed in the gallbladder. They can range from a single stone to numerous stones, which can fill the gallbladder completely. There are two types of gallstones, Cholesterol stones and Pigment stones. Gallstones can form due to the following plausible theories: - The bile contains too much cholesterol. Normally, bile contains enough chemicals to dissolve the cholesterol excreted by liver. But if liver excretes more cholesterol than bile can dissolve, the excess cholesterol may crystalize and form stones. - Bile contains too much bilirubin . Bilirubin is a chemical that’s produced when your body breaks down red blood cells. Certain conditions cause your liver to make too much bilirubin, including liver cirrhosis, biliary tract infections and certain blood disorders like Sickle cell anemia. The increased concentration of bilirubin contributes to gallstone formation. - Gallbladder doesn’t empty correctly. This can happen due to problem with contraction of gallbladder. This can lead to concentration of bile and subsequent gallstone formation. 4What are the Risk factors for Gallstones? 4There are modifiable and non modifiable risk factors for Gallstones. Non modifiable risk factors include ethnic background( highest among American Indians, followed by Hispanics, non-Hispanic whites, and non-Hispanic blacks. Less common in Asians ) , increasing age, female gender and family history. The modifiable risks for cholesterol gallstones include obesity, rapid weight loss and a sedentary lifestyle. Risk factors for biliary
sludge include pregnancy, some medications like antibiotic ceftriaxone, thiazide diuretics, and total parenteral nutrition or fasting. 4What are the symptoms of Gallstones? 4Mere presence of Gallstones does not cause symptoms. Symptoms occur when stone gets lodged in the duct carrying bile(cystic duct) and cause distention of gallbladder. This can lead to pain in the right upper abdomen or in the upper central abdomen between the chest bone and belly button. This is known as biliary colic. This pain can also go to back or right shoulder and maybe accompanied with nausea and vomiting. Episodes of biliary colic are sporadic and unpredictable. Pain is precipitated by eating greasy foods. . Patient can also have nonspecific symptoms like indigestion, acidity , belching, or bloating. 4How are Gallstones diagnosed? 4Abdominal ultrasound is the most common study for gallbladder disease. You may be asked not to eat for 8 hours before the test. Ultrasound can diagnose gallstones and any potential complications. If further tests are required, your physician might order an MRCP(MRI of the gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas) or HIDA scan.
4Do all patients with Gallstones need Surgery? 4Gallstones are common. 10% to 20% of Americans have gallstones. But majority of them (up to 80%) never experience biliary pain or complications. Hence, most gallstones are clinically “silent,” an incidental finding often uncovered during abdominal ultrasound being performed for another reason. Expectant management is an appropriate choice for silent gallstones in most people . The exception are patients at high risk for experiencing biliary complications: Large gallstones (>3 cm) or gallbladders crammed with stones carry a higher risk of developing gallbladder cancer. Also in Sickle cell disease, the symptoms due to gallstones can mimic Sickle cell crisis. If the patient develops symptoms due to gallstones, the gallbladder should be surgically removed to prevent further complications. 4What are the Complications due to Gallstones? 4The main complications associated with gallstones are. Acute cholecystitis- This is the most common complication and presents as sudden onset right upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and fever. Blood test shows signs of infection. This requires hospitalization, IV antibiotics and emergency surgery to remove the inflamed Gallbladder. The chances of surgical complications increase when you have surgery on an inflamed gallbladder. Choledocholithiasis with or without acute cholangitis — Choledocholithiasis refers to the presence of gallstones within the common bile duct, which happens when stone in the gallbladder slips out and get stuck in the main duct carrying bile from the liver to the intestine. Acute cholangitis is a clinical syndrome characterized by fever, jaundice, and abdominal pain as a consequence of infection due to blockage of main bile duct due to slipped stone. This requires emergency unclogging of the bile duct and removal of the stone using endoscopy(ERCP). Gallstone pancreatitis — The passage of gallstones through the biliary tract can trigger acute

pancreatitis by obstruction of the flow from the pancreatic duct. Patients present with severe abdominal pain, fever and elevation in liver enzymes (bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, and transaminases). This requires hospital admission, many times in the ICU. Pancreatitis is a serious complication of gallstones and can be life threatening. 4What is the treatment for Gallstones. Are there any risks of undergoing Surgery for Gallstones? 4The treatment for Gallstones causing symptoms or complications arising due to gallstones is surgical removal of Gallbladder, otherwise known as Cholecystectomy. Removal of gallbladder can be performed Laparoscopically through small abdominal incisions in more than 90 percent of patients. If the Surgery is performed in a planned fashion, the patient can be discharged home the same day. Chances of complications for Gallbladder Surgery is less than 5 percent, chances of major complication is less than 0.5 percent. 4Can Gallstones be treated without Surgery? A. If the gallstones are made of cholesterol, it can sometimes be dissolved with a medication known as Ursodeoxycholic acid. This medication slowly dissolves the stone, but the treatment may take up to 24 months and might not be effective. Also the chances of stones coming back are higher. This treatment is reserved for patients who cannot undergo Surgery due to age or other medical problems. Introduction: Dr Atul Nanda is a General Surgeon trained at Mayo Clinic. Aparajita Leekha Has Been Nominated as AIOREP’S 10 Best in Illinois Real Estate Agents BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO,IL- The American Institute of Real Estate Agents has recognized the exceptional performance of Illinois’s Real Estate Agent Aparajita Leekha as Two Years 10 Best Real Estate Agents for Client Satisfaction. The American Institute of Real Estate Agents is a third-party rating organization that publishes an annual list of the Top 10 Real Estate Agents in each state. Agents who are selected to the “10 Best” list must pass AIOREP’s rigorous selection process, which is based on client and/or peer nominations, thorough research, and AIOREP’s independent evaluation. AIOREP’s annual list was created
to be used as a resource for clients during the selection process. One of the most significant aspects of the selection process involves agents’ relationships and reputation among his or her clients. As clients should be a agent’s top priority, AIOREP places the utmost emphasis on selecting agents who have achieved significant success in the field of Real Estate without sacrificing the service and support they provide. Selection criteria therefore focus on agents who demonstrate the highest standards of Client Satisfaction. We congratulate Aparajita Leekha this achievement and we are honored to have her as a Two Years AIOREP Member.

JTF-W STC Arrests USCIS Target Tied To Illicit Funds, Marriage Fraud
BY USCIS CALLEN, TX – Agents assigned to the Joint Task Force - West, South Texas Corridor’s McAllen Joint Targeting Team (JTT) in coordination with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and Hidalgo County Precinct 2 Constables Office, arrested Edsgardo Coss-Vallejo on suspicion of marriage fraud and currency smuggling. During a USCIS interview, Coss-Vallejo’s petitioner withdrew her I-30 Petition for Alien Relative form. USCIS subsequently denied the application, revoked his visa, and notified JTF-W STC of his overstay and suspected marriage fraud. Additional research by the JTT revealed several illicit financial transactions totaling $128,000. JTT agents requested and received consent from Coss-Vallejo to search his home after suspecting illicit activity at the residence. A Border Patrol canine team performed a nonintrusive search and alerted to a duffle bag in his home that contained cash totaling $362,062 and 29,200 Mexican Pesos and he denied ownership. “USCIS is an active partner in Joint Task Force-West, South Texas Corridor, assisting our law enforcement partners in stopping immigration-related crimes,” said USCIS San Antonio District Director Mario Ortiz. “USCIS is committed to combating instances of abuse and other criminal activities threatening the integrity of our nation’s immigration system.” JTT agents seized the bulk cash and CossVallejo was processed and removed from the country.

Indian American Pleads Guilty to Young Indian American Boy rescues Drowning Man from Pool Scam Targeting the Elderly
Advaik Nandikotkur
BY A STAFF WRITER DISON, NJ - A 25-year-old Edison man has pleaded guilty to theft of movable property for his participation in an international computer scam that bilked 83 senior citizens from several states out of $25,000 in cash. Mohammed Alam pleaded guilty to the third-degree crime Monday following a plea agreement with Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Russell Curley, according to a news release from Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey. Alam faces a sentence of probation and paying the full $25,000 in restitution to his victims when he is sentenced March 8 by
E
Middlesex County Superior Court Judge Benjamin Bucca. Alam conspired with parties from a call center in India that used his Edison-based company, Infusion Micro, LLC, to accept payments from the unsuspecting victims, according to the news release. The scam was initially uncovered by Detective Sgt. Aaron Wojtkowski of the Newbury, Massachusetts Police Department after a resident in that community reported she had been contacted by someone on behalf of Microsoft. The caller claimed the elderly victim had a problem with her computer and for a fee the problem could be fixed remotely, according to the news release.
BY A STAFF WRITER AGAN, MN— An 11-year-old boy in Eagan, Minnesota, was in the right place at the right time, and managed to save a partially conscious 34-year-old man from drowning at the bottom of a pool at an apartment complex. Police in Eagan responded to an apartment complex around 7:25 p.m. Dec. 30 to a possible drowning at the bottom of an indoor pool at the complex. When officers arrived, they found the man partially conscious. They say the man was in the shallow end of the pool before he ventured to the deep end where he went underwater and never resurfaced, the report noted. Advaik Nandikotkur, police say, is a hero for saving the man’s life. The young Indian American
E
boy was the only person in the pool who could swim at the time. He jumped into the pool and pulled the man – who was about 100 pounds heavier than the young boy – to the ledge, where adults helped pull him out of the pool, according to the report. The man was then transported to a hospital and released a few hours later, the report said. “He just jumped into action and jumped in and saved a guy who was drowning – and literally saved his life,” Eagan Police Officer Aaron Machtemes said in the report. Nandikotkur has been taking swimming lessons since his family moved to Minnesota from India in 2015. “Mom said to jump in. I said he’s probably too heavy but I jumped in anyway, Nandikotkur said.

I FEEL RESPONSIBLE, SAYS KJO Hardik Pandya and K.L. Rahul faced a lot of flak for their comments on women when they opened up on their personal life on ‘Koffee With Karan’ IANS, MUMBAI
F
ilmmaker Karan Johar feels “very responsible” about the repercussions that cricketers Hardik Pandya and K.L. Rahul have faced since they made some misogynistic remarks on his chat show but says he has no control over answers that come his way. Karan, who is currently at the World Economic Forum, spoke about the controversial episode in an interview to ET Now. He said: “I have to say that I feel very responsible because it was my show and my platform. I invited them as guests, and so the ramifications and the repercussions of the show are my responsibility. I have had so many sleepless nights wondering how can I undo this damage, who is going to listen to me... “It has now gone into a zone
Film on menstruation in Oscar nomination LOS ANGELES: “Period. End of Sentence”, an India set film on the taboos around menstruation and featuring the real ‘Pad Man’, has made it to the Oscar nomination, it was announced here. The film has made it to the top five nominees of the Documentary Short Subject category. Other nominees include “Black Sheep”, “End Game”, “Lifeboat” and “A Night At The Garden”. “Period...” is executive produced by Guneet Monga and is co-produced by Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment, which has backed films like “The Lunchbox”. —IANS

Will not apologize to Karni Sena: Kangana IANS, MUMBAI
A
ctress Kangana Ranaut, whose forthcoming film ‘Manikarnika - The Queen of Jhansi’ has sailed through many controversies, has said she will not apologize to rightwing Shri Rajput Karni Sena for the statement she made against them. There were reports that Shri Rajput Karni Sena opposed ‘Manikarnika...’ as it shows Queen
Laxmibai dancing to a special number, saying it is against tradition. They asked the makers of the film to show them the movie before its release. Reacting to their statement Kangana made a statement that “I am a Rajput and I will destroy them.” But soon after that, Shri Rajput Karni Sena claimed the outfit is not involved in the protests against Kangana Ranaut starer movie and stated that some people are using
Kangana Ranaut.
Shri Rajput Karni Sena’s name for vested interests but they demanded an apology from Kangana for making a derogatory statement against their organization.
Following the episode, the two cricketers were sent home midway through a three-match ODI series in Australia. The filmmaker added: “I don’t care about the TRPs... People don’t understand that an English language show is never dependent on its ratings. We are nowhere on the radar of ratings. It was meant to be my show, and I want to say it, it is frivolous, sometimes a completely borderline, ridiculous, irreverent, candid, ‘stop making sense’ is our mantra... That’s the show. “But I am not saying or justifying the conversation that happened on the episode. I am just saying that perhaps that things were said that crossed the boundaries, and I apologize because it was my platform where it happened. I feel the boys have paid the price for it already.” Kangana said, “I will not apologize to anybody. I have never apologized whenever I haven’t made a mistake. We have promised that we haven’t shown anything wrong about Rani Laxmibai in the film so, they should support us. Rani Laxmibai is not my relative and I feel she is daughter of the entire country so, we all should support the film. Shri Rajput Karni Sena should not play their ego card with me because I am not here to say sorry to anyone.” ‘Manikarnika..’ is an Indian historical biographical film based on the life of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi. Directed by Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi and Kangana Ranaut, the film is scheduled to be released on January 25.
‘Bombairiya’: Crazily heartwarming homage to Mumbai
M
umbai, or Bombay as we all know it, is a schizophrenic city. Inviting, welcoming, affectionate and warm one minute, hostile, intimidating and disorienting the next... “Bombairiya” captures the polarised propensities of the split city with vigor and humor. Sure, towards the midpoint, the edifice of chaos built on the premise of ‘One Day in the Life Of Radhika Apte’ (she gets top solo billing), begins to fall apart. And you feel the film is trying to cram in too much physical activity at the cost of giving the plot and the characters space to breathe. But then, this is a homage to a breathless city. And the rhythms of the film follow suit. No time to ask
Film: “Bombairiya”; Director: Pia Sukanya; Cast: Radhika Apte, Akshay Oberoi, Ravi Kissan, Siddhant Kapoor, Adil Hussain and Amit Sial; Rating: *** why. Just act. There is unstoppable energy about the film, and that doesn’t always work in its favor. Often times, I felt the characters were running away from themselves and from us, the audience. The relentless bhaag-daud (helter skelter) eventually seeps into the characterdriven narrative. But before it does, the people who populate the bustle over the hustle, are thrown so close to our affections that we want the progressively spi-
Radhika Apte in a scene from Bombairiya.
raling plot to somehow come together for their sake. The writing favors defining interactive moments on a random beat that bring strangers together. There is Meghna (Radhika) running around a vain, philandering
film star Karan Kapoor (Ravi Kishen, in splendid form as usual) when she collides with a courier man (Siddhant Kapoor). Within minutes, she is “rescued” by an incredibly kind-hearted goodlooking dude Abhishek who gets
busy solving all of Meghna’s problems on the road, from replacing her lost shoes with his spare sneakers, to talking to her dadi on the phone about her horribly skewed love life (Jim Sarbh shows up as her ex-boyfriend in a one-scene appearance), to accompanying her through an adventure that leaves a lot of ‘huh’ spaces in the narrative. It all gets into a scramble that scampers clumsily into a church at the end. Siddhant is also exceptionally interesting in his role of a reluctant accomplice to a crime. Adil Hussain, as a jailed politician, and Amit Sial convey so much with their silent smirks. But my favorite is Akshay, who never lets a script down. —Subhash K. Jha
