Same-sex couples can marry across US, State can’t oppose such a move, ruled Supreme Court such marriages performed elsewhere. G

iving gay rights activists their biggest victory yet, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on June 26 that same-sex couples can marry nationwide and states cannot ban such marriages — an issue that divides America and India too. President Barack Obama, who come out in support of same sex marriage only three years ago in the face of fast-changing public opinion in the midst of his 2012 re-election campaign, hailed the apex court’s 5-4 ruling as “a victory for America”. Social progress sometimes comes in small increments, he said from the White House Rose Garden, “and then there are days like this, when that slow, steady effort is rewarded with justice that arrives like a thunderbolt”.

‘No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than they once were.’ President Barack Obama, who come out in support of same sex marriage only three years ago, hailed the apex court’s 5-4 ruling as “a victory for America”.

“America should be very proud,” said Obama whose administration supported the challengers to the gay marriage bans in the apex court. Unlike India, where homosexu-

ality is a criminal offense, same-sex couples can marry in 36 American states today, but federal appeals courts have been divided over whether states must allow same-sex couples to marry and recognize

children. Lawyers for the four states argued their bans were justified by tradition and the distinctive characteristics of opposite-sex unions. The issue, they said, should be resolved democratically, at the polls and in state legislatures, rather than by judges. The challengers included same-

highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family,” wrote Justice Anthony Kennedy for the majority with four liberal justices. “In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than they once were,” Kennedy added.

New batch of Hillary Clinton’s emails released Victorious Obama says healthcare law ‘here to stay’ IANS, WASHINGTON

WASHINGTON: As the US Supreme Court handed President Barack Obama a huge victory by upholding his signature healthcare law that opposition Republicans have tried to repeal countless times, he vowed to make it even better. “Five years ago, after nearly a century of talk, decades of trying, a year of bipartisan debate, we finally declared that in America, healthcare is not a privilege for a few but a right for all,” Obama said from the White House shortly after the verdict. “Americans would have gone backwards and that’s not what we do, that’s not what America does, we move forward,” he said praising the apex court’s decision to uphold the subsidies in the law, nicknamed “Obamacare”.

“The Affordable Care Act is here to stay,” Obama said of the law that has extended cover to more than 15 million Americans who didn’t have health insurance before it was signed into law in 2010. In a 6-3 decision, the court held the Act authorized federal tax subsidies to help poor and middle-class people buy health insurance nationwide and not just in states with their own exchanges to shop for them. Only 16 states and the American capital of Washington have set up their own health insurance marketplaces and over 6.4 million Americans living in 34 Republican-ruled states which did not create such market places are dependent on Federal exchanges. “Congress passed the Affordable Care Act to improve health insurance markets, not to destroy them,” Chief Justice John Roberts, a conservative, wrote in the majority opinion joined by another conservative and the four liberal justices. “If at all possible, we must interpret the Act in a way that is consistent with the former, and avoids the latter,” he said. In a dissent, Justice Antonin Scalia said “we should start calling this law SCOTUScare,” referring to the two times the Court has saved the law. Challenge to the Act hinged on just four words in the law that they argued made subsidies available only to people buying insurance on “an exchange established by the state”.

T

he U.S. State Department has released a new batch of emails from Hillary Clinton while she served as the secretary of state. The 3,000 pages of emails were made public on June 30 on the State Department’s Freedom of Information Act website. The newly-released batch was the first batch from a dossier of about 55,000 pages of emails turned over by Clinton from her private e-mail server, Xinhua reported. A previous court mandate ruled that the State Department released her private work-related e-mails every 30 days starting on June 30 through January 29, 2016. Clinton handed over her e-mails to the State Department last year and said she had deleted about 30,000 emails saying they contained “personal stuff”.

The 3,000 pages of e-mails were made public on June 30 on the State Department’s Freedom of Information Act website.

Because all the e-mails were sent from Clinton’s private e-mail account via a private server, the content of the deleted correspondence was unknown to the public. After being exposed in March,

Clinton had taken a lot of heat as a House committee investigating the 2012 deadly attacks at the US. Benghazi embassy claimed that Clinton had not turned over all emails related to the attacks.

The MoU was inked by US Ambassador Richard Verma and New and Renewable Energy Secretary Upendra Tripathi as part of President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to strengthening and expanding the US-India Partnership to Advance Clean Energy (PACE), said

a US embassy statement here. The fund will provide grants to support development and testing of innovative products, systems, and

business models to improve the viability of off-grid renewable energy businesses. The grants will target companies that sell small-scale clean energy systems to individuals and communities without access to gridconnected power or with limited or intermittent access to power. The PACEsetter Fund is the principal funding arm of Promoting Energy Access through Clean Energy (PEACE), an initiative of the US government and India to harness commercial enterprise and bring clean energy access to unserved and underserved individuals and communities.

Lalitgate: BJP faces the heat

The Congress has been trying to corner the BJP over two of its senior functionaries’ – Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje, ministers both – controversial dealings with former IPL boss Lalit Modi IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he Congress on July 1 again trained its guns on External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, asking her to come clean on the Lalit Modi issue. The opposition party also demanded that the Narendra Modi government tell the truth about Sushma Swaraj’s relations with former Indian Premier League chief Lalit Modi. “Sushma Swaraj must tell the people of the country how many times she has met Lalit Modi or if any of her family members had been in touch with the fugitive,” Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said at a media briefing here. Surjewala demanded that the BJP government make public all letters exchanged between the previous UPA government and authorities in Britain over the Lalit Modi issue. Taking a dig at the Narendra Modi government, the Congress leader said: “From Maulana Masood Azhar to Lalit Modi, from Kandahar

to London, the NDA government has been helping such people on humanitarian grounds.” Surjewala further demanded the resignations of Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje. On June 30, Congress claimed there was a “criminal nexus” between Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and former IPL

chief Lalit Modi, and stepped up pressure by producing fresh documents in support of its claim that the Dholpur Palace was a stateowned property. The BJP once again refuted the charge as “baseless”. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh produced certain documents that allegedly showed that Raje’s son Dushyant Singh and his father Hemant Singh reached a

Red-corner Interpol notice for Lalit Modi? NEW DELHI: The NDA government is all set to request Interpol to issue a red-corner notice against former IPL chief Lalit Modi who is wanted for financial irregularities, it was reliably learnt. The decision was taken at a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, said sources. The government has also decided to continue backing Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje despite the pressure from the Congress for her resignation for helping Lalit Modi with his residency application in Britain.

A BJP leader privy to the meeting told IANS on the condition of anonymity that it was “also discussed that how the Blue Corner Notice against Lalit Modi can be converted into a Red Corner Notice”. “If the Red Corner Notice is issued, Lalit Modi can be detained in any country,” he said, adding that the government wanted to convert the lookout notice for financial bungling against Lalit Modi to one meant for criminal activity. Jaitley, in his meetings with the prime minister and BJP president, discussed the party’s strategy in view of

the opposition’s unrelenting attack on Raje. A party source said that a strategy was chalked out to tighten the grip on Lalit Modi in the cases faced by him as the controversy has continued to embarrass the BJP. The option of approaching the Supreme Court to revoke Lalit Modi’s passport was also explored in this meeting. “The root of all these problems is Lalit Modi and if the government succeeds in bringing him back to India, it will achieve what UPA could not during its regime,” the BJP leader told IANS.

PM Modi launches ‘Digital India Week’ NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 1 launched the ‘Digital India Week’, an umbrella program that seeks to transform India into a digitally-empowered, knowledge economy. The larger goal of Digital India includes broadband connectivity in all panchayats, Wi-fi in all the schools and universities and public wi-fi hotspots in all important cities by 2019. It will be deployed in delivering services in areas like health, education, agriculture and banking. All existing and ongoing e-governance initiatives will be revamped to align them with the larger principles of ‘Digital India, said officials.

Ramesh also demanded an independent probe into the entire controversy. “There has been a criminal nexus between Lalit Modi and the Raje family. Until there is a closure to this issue, the Congress will keep bringing out disclosures,” the former union minister added. Terming the charges levelled by Ramesh as baseless and unsubstantiated, the BJP’s Rajasthan unit maintained that the Dholpur Palace in the state belonged to Raje’s son Dushyant Singh and challenged the Congress to prove it to the contrary. State BJP chief Ashok Parnami showed some documents, including some court and family settlement papers, to reporters saying that the palace actually belonged to Dushyant Singh.

Cong denies reports of deal on GST Bill NEW DELHI: The Congress has dismissed reports that it offered to ensure smooth passage of Goods and Services Tax Bill in parliament if the government removed External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje. “Question of quid pro quo on the all-pervading issue of morality and constitutional accountability does not arise,” Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala told the media here. Demanding the resignations or sacking of BJP ministers were issues of “righteousness”, he said. Reports had said that faced with the solidarity of the NDA government with Sushma Swaraj and Raje, the Congress offered not to block the GST Bill despite strong reservations if the external affairs minister and Rajasthan chief minister resigned from their respective offices.

Lalit Modi ‘free hits’ continue IANS, NEW DELHI

F

ormer IPL chief Lalit Modi’s tweets are causing a flutter as he is targeting politicians of all hues. In the line of fire now is BJP MP Varun Gandhi, who Modi claims, met him in London “a few years ago” and offered to “settle everything” with Congress president Sonia Gandhi. “@varungandhi80 came to see me at my house a few years ago and said he can settle everything in @INCIndia with his aunt,” Modi tweeted late Tuesday. “He wanted me to meet her sister from Italy. I heard him next I heard from our common friend who introduced us that auntie wants 60 million dollars. Told them whaaaat are u nuts go HKG a kite. Can he deny that. I hope he does,” Modi posted on Twitter. In another tweet, he clarified: “The auntie he refers to is #soniagandhi. The sister is #soniagandhi sister - just for clarity.” “Please clarify @varungandhi80 did u or did u not come to my house in London. Whilst staying at the Ritz hotel in London a few years ago,” said another of his tweets. Earlier on June 26, Modi claimed that he and senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal had sat and chatted for three days in Istanbul. “Did KAPIL Sibal a congress politician report we sat and ate and spoke at a wedding for 3 days in

Istanbul,” tweeted Lalit Modi. Earlier in the day, Modi, who has repeatedly been termed an absconder by the Congress, tweeted that he had bumped into Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s daughter Priyanka Vadra and her husband Robert Vadra in a London restaurant last year. “Happy to meet the Gandhi family in London. I had run into Robert (Vadra) and Priyanka separately in a restaurant,” tweeted Modi. The Congress swiftly denied the claim. Priyanka Gandhi’s office said “there was no meeting”. The former Indian Premier League commissioner, who lives in London since 2010, also tweeted his distress at the “unfounded allegations” levelled at him which he described as “press fodder for enhanced TRPs”.

JINDAL’S AMERICAN DREAM L IANS, WASHINGTON

ouisiana Governor Piyush “Bobby” Jindal on June 24 made his much-anticipated entry into the 2016 White House race via Twitter making him the first Indian-American and 13th Republican candidate to do so. “I’m running for President of the United States of America. Join me,” he tweeted with a link to his campaign site shortly after noon ahead of a planned formal announcement in the New Orleans suburb of Kenner same evening. “A Special Announcement From Bobby Jindal. My name is Bobby Jindal, and I am running for President of the United States of America. There were three people I think you would agree my wife Supriya and I had to tell first,” said a second tweet. Jindal’s tweet came shortly after adviser Curt Anderson told reporters at a morning briefing: “We get into the race at 5 o’clock tonight,” A hidden-camera style video of the governor telling his kids about his decision to run followed. His daughter quickly leveraged the information, requesting a puppy as her share of the deal. “OK, if we move into the White House, you can have a puppy,” Jindal told his daughter. Jindal joins an already crowded field of Republican candidates including Jeb Bush, Rick Perry and Mike Huckabee, former governors of Florida, Texas and Arkansas respectively, US Senators Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio and Lind-

All about Jindal WASHINGTON: Bobby Jindal is a leader in the Republican Party and an outspoken voice for integrity and conservatism in American politics. Currently in his second term, the Louisiana Governor has enacted comprehensive conservative reforms, said his website. Bobby was born and raised in Baton Rouge. After graduating from Baton Rouge High School, he attended Brown University where he graduated with Biology and Public Policy degrees. While at Brown, Bobby felt less passionate about medicine, and more intrigued with healthcare policy and went on to study at Oxford University as a Rhodes scholar, graduating in 1994 with a Masters Degree in literature with a concentration in healthcare policy.

No hyphenation please!

WASHINGTON: Stung by media criticism that he is distancing himself from his Indian heritage, Bobby Jindal’s presidential campaign is hitting hard on his ‘hyphenated Americans’ theme with T-shirts touting him as “tanned, rested, ready”. The $20 official T-shirt which is supposed to be a nod to Jindal’s Indian heritage and his dislike of “hyphenated American” modifiers as well as a play on a famous Richard Nixon line, is apparently his way of getting back at the “liberal media.” Way back in 1988, a T-shirt sold at the Young Republican convention in Seattle depicted “a smiling Richard M. Nixon” with the slogan “He’s tan, rested and ready,” according to the New York Times. “The liberal media said, ‘There’s not much Indian left in Bobby Jindal,’ so we made shirts to mock them,” Jindal, the first Indian-American governor and the 13th Republican candidate in the 2016 White

sey Graham, former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina; and real estate mogul Donald Trump. Analysts suggested that he faces an uphill task in his campaign and even faces the prospect of being

eliminated from Fox News’s presidential debates starting August 6 as the channel has decided to limit it to the top 10. Jindal, who received wide support from Indian-Americans in his

Congressional and gubernatorial campaigns, seems to have lost much traction with the community since he recently declared that he was tired of hyphenated Americans. His parents, he declared, “They weren’t coming to raise ‘IndianAmericans.’ They were coming to raise Americans.” As Pearson Cross, a political science professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette who is writing a book on him told the Washington Post: “There’s not much Indian left in Bobby Jindal.”

House race, tweeted on June 30. The line is an apparent reference to a quote from Pearson Cross, a political science professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette who is writing a book on him, in a Washington Post profile of Jindal. “The liberal narrative that developed this week was disgusting: apparently Bobby isn’t brown enough for them,” said Jindal campaign manager Timmy Teepell. Jindal’s presidential super PAC — a supposedly independent political action committee that may raise money and engage in unlimited political spending independently of a campaign-also criticized “hyphenated Americans.” The first television advertisement released by Believe Again PAC in Iowa, the state from where presidential campaigns of both parties traditionally begin, uses clips of Jindal’s campaign launch suggesting that the use of “hyphenated Americans” is divisive.

The Louisiana-born son of immigrant parents from India, Jindal converted from Hinduism to Christianity as a teen, and was later baptized a Catholic as a student at Brown University. The Rhodes scholar was the second Indian-American to be elected to the US House of Representatives in 2004 after Dalip Singh Saund, a Democrat, in 1957. He was re-elected to the Congress in 2006 before making his second run for governor in 2007. He was re-elected in 2011.

Jindal to comply with same-sex marriage ruling ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

L

ouisiana’s Indian-American Governor Bobby Jindal is still not reconciled with the US Supreme Court’s ruling to recognize same-sex marriage, but for now his state agencies will comply with its decree. Even though the apex court ruled in a 5-4 decision in support of same-sex marriage, the Republican presidential candidate said on Fox News on June 29, he will “continue fighting” over his belief that marriage is between a man and a woman. “An earthly court doesn’t change for me the institution that was created, defined by God,” he said. “My Christian faith teaches me

Jindal is concerned that the decision may impact business owners nationwide.

that marriage is between a man and a woman.” Jindal also voiced concerns that the Supreme Court’s decision may impact business own-

ers nationwide who may object to same-sex marriage. “Already, Christian businesses are facing discrimination if they

don’t want to participate in wedding ceremonies that violate their sincerely held beliefs,” Jindal said. He pointed to his own religious freedom executive order in Louisiana that is meant to protect public and private employees who have objections to same-sex marriage. Jindal’s executive counsel, Thomas Enright, issued a memo on Monday that reiterated the state’s commitment to protecting the rights of residents who don’t believe in same-sex marriage. Meanwhile, a gay rights advocacy group and the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana are suing governor Bobby Jindal for issuing an executive order aimed at protecting opponents of same-sex marriage.

SHORT TAKES Student gets aid for LGBT research in TN WASHINGTON: An Indian student has received an LGBT scholarship from California University to investigate how political tensions have led to the proliferation of new notions of sexual identity in Tamil Nadu. “The movements taking place in Tamil Nadu right now draw on LGBT rights language, but they also draw on a lot of other histories,” says winner Shakthi Nataraj, an anthropology student at UC Berkeley.

Eco-friendly solution for oil spill developed DUBAI: Researchers, including two Indian-origin scientists, have developed an eco-friendly biodegradable green “herding” agent that can be used to clean up light crude oil spills on water. Derived from the plant-based small molecule phytol abundant in the marine environment, the new substance would potentially replace chemical herders currently in use. “The best known chemical herders are chemically stable, non-biodegradable, and hence remain in the marine ecosystem for years,” said co-researcher Deeksha Gupta, post-doctoral student now at the Royal Society of Chemistry.

resident Barack Obama praised South Carolina’s Indian-American Governor Nikki Haley for calling for the removal of slavery era Confederate flag from the State Capitol grounds 150 years after the end of the U.S. Civil War. “For too long, we were blind to the pain that the Confederate flag stirred in too many of our citizens,” he said delivering a touching eulogy at the funeral on June 26 of the pastor of a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, where a white man gunned down nine people last week. “It’s true, a flag did not cause these murders,” he said turning his eulogy into a rousing political speech and a thoughtful discourse on race in America. “But as people from all walks of life, Republicans and Democrats, now acknowledge — including Governor (Nikki) Haley, whose recent eloquence on the subject is worthy of praise as we all have to acknowledge, the flag has always represented more than just ancestral pride,” Obama said.

said: “The government has taken a variety of measures to promote ease of doing business in the state and we want to be viewed as a top destination for both domestic as

well as international investments.” He received an endorsement from the USIBC president Mukesh Aghi, who said, “The Council’s member companies have been encouraged by the ease of doing business in Maharashtra.” “Our government”, Fadnavis said, “is committed to providing a boost to both ‘Make in India’ and ‘Make in Maharashtra’ campaigns.”

“Removing the flag from this state’s capitol would not be an act of political correctness; it would not be an insult to the valor of Confederate soldiers. “It would be one step in an honest accounting of America’s history; a modest but meaningful balm for so many unhealed wounds,” Obama said. At the end of speech, Obama to the surprise of the mourners launched into a solo of “Amazing Grace”. It brought the audience to their feet as they joined him in the song.

top-level Indian American executive has quit microblogging site Twitter to pursue some exciting new projects, the latest in a string of highprofile departures. The exit of Rishi Garg, Twitter’s head of mergers and acquisitions, comes weeks after Twitter said it is replacing its CEO Dick Costolo with co-founder Jack Dorsey as an interim CEO. “After an amazing ride as Twitter’s VP Corporate Development and Strategy, I’m saying farewell today (Saturday),” Garg tweeted. “I am off to pursue some excit-

ing new projects; more soon! #staytuned,” Garg added He joined Twitter in May 2014 from the firm Square. Before that, Garg was an entre-

preneur in General Catalyst Partners, Google and MTV Networks. “Our team has built a stronger Twitter with a dozen acquisitions in the last year including @periscopeco,@zipdial,@tellapart, @joinniche,” Garg’s post read. “It’s been a privilege to bring incredible entrepreneurs into the #flock like @kayvz, @crazyfoo, @valwagoner, @jeffma, @dlach5, @gabor.” “I can’t wait to witness the company’s next chapter under @jack, a truly gifted leader and human being,” he added. Twitter said it is looking for a CEO with a “full-time commitment” to run the service.

Greek crisis looms large

Greece’s debt payment crisis sends stocks tumbling across the globe; Eurozone ministers may discuss a Greek request for a new bailout IANS, ATHENS

G

reece’s government proposed a two-year debt deal with the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) in a last-minute bid to avert the countdown to default and a possible Grexit, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ office said on June 30. According to government sources, at the same time Tsipras was ready to travel to Brussels to discuss the proposal with European partners, Xinhua reported. “The Greek government proposed today a two-year agreement with the ESM to fully cover its financial needs, and a parallel debt restructuring,” the e-mailed announcement said. “The Greek government will seek until the end a viable solution within the eurozone. This is the message of ‘No’ to a bad draft deal proposal

on Sunday,” the statement added. The Greek government stressed that the decision to call on June 28 a referendum for July 5 on the draft agreement lenders made last week “was not the end of negotiations.” The messages from European leaders on the interpretation

of the referendum’s outcome varied. Greece remains at the negotiating table, concluded the statement. It was issued just a few hours before the extended Greek bailout expired on June 30 midnight amid increased concern over a looming

default and possible Grexit. Earlier on June 30, Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said Greece will not repay the loan instalment due to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), even as the country mulled taking legal actions to block its exit from the eurozone. Greece’s failure to meet its financial obligations to the IMF for a second time in a month and pay off 1.5 billion euros ($1.7) in loan instalment could launch formal procedures for default in coming weeks. The Leftist Greece government of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is believed to have rejected once again the lenders’ draft as a basis for further discussion, but was preparing a new agreement proposal to submit to the other side before calling for a Eurogroup meeting as early as June 30 evening, television channel Mega reported, citing sources.

SHORT TAKES Fresh talks on new Greece bailout ATHENS: Eurozone ministers are scheduled to discuss a Greek request for a new bailout on Wednesday after Athens missed the deadline for a $1.7-billion payment to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). On June 30, eurozone finance ministers refused to extend the previous bailout following the collapse of talks.

Greece requests more time to repay IMF ATHENS: The Greek government has requested more time from International Monetary Fund (IMF) to repay 1.5 billion euro loan installment that was due on June 30 midnight, Greek Deputy Prime Minister Yannis Dragassakis said. The debt laden country will submit an updated proposal for a debt deal with international creditors to the new Eurogroup talks scheduled for July 1, the Greek official added.

P Indonesian plane crash: 141 dead JAKARTA: The death toll from the crash of an Indonesian military transport plane that careered into the side of a building in Medan on June 30 has risen to 141. Names of the 12 crew on board the C-130 Hercules plane have been released and authorities have confirmed that more than 100 passengers were also on board. Search and rescue team resumed activities at the site on Wednesday morning and have confirmed that at least three people were killed on the ground, although that number is expected to rise. The official numbers of people on the Hercules flight has fluctuated, with Indonesian air force spokesperson Dwi Bandarmanto confirming on July 1 morning that 122 passengers, in addition to the 12 crew, had been on board. “We had the list of the manifest and it was changing a lot. There was some children who were not named on the manifest, maybe five to eight children,” he explained. The spokesperson said the

majority of those on board were relatives of members of the military, but confirmed an investigation into whether the flight was also carrying paying passengers — which is prohibited — is underway. Hitching rides on military planes to reach remote destinations is common in Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago that spans three time zones. It is also common practice for government officials and relatives of military servicemen to take military flights, with permission from the base commander. The plane had reportedly travelled from the capital, Jakarta, and stopped at two locations before arriving at Medan. Indonesia has a chequered air safety history, with 10 fatal crashes involving Indonesian military or police aircraft in the last decade, according to the Aviation Safety Network. In 2009, an Indonesian air force Hercules hit four houses before skidding into a rice field, killing 95 people on board and two on the ground.

rime Minister David Cameron on June 29 promised a “full spectrum response” to Islamist extremism, after British tourists were killed in attack on “Bloody Friday” on a Tunisian beach resort. The killings were “absolutely horrific”, but the terror threat would be beaten. “This is, I think, going to be the struggle of our generation and we have to fight it with everything we can,” Cameron told BBC Radio 4 Today program. A total of 38 people were killed on a beach near Sousse by a gunman with links to IS extremists. Cameron said IS could be beaten but it would take “a very long time”. He said IS posed “an exis-

tential threat” to the West, and its members in Iraq and Syria were plotting “terrible attacks” on British soil. Asked if British troops were needed on the ground, the British Prime Minister said: “Our strategy is to build up local armies. It’s much easier to just invade a country... it’s easier and faster, but that has consequences.”

LONDON: A two-day major counter-terrorism exercise involving police officers, soldiers, emergency services and intelligence officials started in London on June 30, the media reported. London’s largest counter-terrorism exercise — codenamed Strong Tower — involves over 1,000 officials at locations across the city. The Metropolitan Police says the exercise was not based on any specific intelligence and was part of a long-term strategy of planning and preparing for all possible types of terrorist attack.

on June 30. Yang said that the ministry had released a white paper on China’s Military Strategy on May

26, which some Western commentators had said showed a newfound assertiveness in the armed forces. “China believes in solving all its disputes through peaceful talks and consultation,” he said, adding that it has not used military force or gone to war with any country over it. “We have excercised utmost restraint,” he asserted. He said some commentators had also mentioned that because of the new stance, China may even launch pre-emptive strikes. This, he said, was totally a wrong reading of China’s doctrine.

Farmer’s death rocks K’taka legislature BELAGAVI (KARNATAKA): Suicide by a debt-ridden farmer and a similar attempt by another in Karnataka on June 29 rocked the state legislature on the first day of the 10-day monsoon session. Even before the day’s proceedings began here in Belagavi, over 500 km from Bengaluru, news came from Mandya, about 100 km from the state capital, that 52-yearold farmer Basavaraju committed suicide as he was unable to pay back Rs.500,000 he took as loan to grow sugarcane in his field, but did not receive money from a sugar mill for last year’s crop. When news of another farmer, 34-year-old Siddaram, attempting to take his life near Suvarna Soudha where the session is being held, broke out, opposition lawmakers in the legislative council urged Chairman D.S. Shankaranmurthy to suspend the question hour and allow a discussion on suicides by farmers in the state in the last 10 days. Leader of Opposition in the council K. Eshwarappa urged the Congress government to pay arrears to farmers. by auctioning sugar the cooperation department had seized from sugar mills. In the assembly too, opposition lawmakers of the BJP and the Janata Dal-Secular staged a demonstration near the speaker’s podium over the plight of sugarcane growers.

Major opposition parties like the DMK, the PMK, the DMDK, the Congress, the BJP and the MDMK stayed away from the contest. The two Left parties fielded Mahendran as their joint candidate. The Karnataka government has gone on appeal against the high court order in the Supreme Court.

ive teenage girl students from Bengaluru won the Technovation challenge at a global pitch event at San Francisco city in the US. Sanjana Vasanth, N. Anupama, Mahima Mehendale, Swasthi P. Rao and B. Navyashree, all aged 14, won the award for their app Sellixo which provides an online marketplace to buy and sell dry waste. The girls said they were inspired by the prime minister’s Swachh Bharat Mission, Digital India and Save the Girl Child initiative and embarked on “a challenge like this”. The girls beat 400 other teams from 64 nations to bag $10,000 on June 25 with their app, which caters

to dry waste producers like small shopkeepers, dry waste collectors (raddiwalas), recycling agencies and others.

“In India, we have scrap dealers who go from house to house collecting waste. It is a tiring job, so we want to connect the buyers and sell-

ers of dry waste,” said team member Swasthi P. Rao. “Once people know that they will get money for it, they will be motivated to actually collect it (dry waste), segregate it and dispose it properly,” said B. Navyashree. The girls competed under the team name Pentechan and pitched their idea to top female technology executives in the challenge organized by Adobe Foundation, CA Technologies, Google, Verizon, United Nations Women, UNESCO and MIT Media Lab. Technovation is a technology entrepreneurship programme for girls which aims to inspire the next generation of young women entrepreneurs.

Is India globally competitive? It is viable that India is not extremely competitive at present but is bettering its economic prospects AMIT KAPOOR, NEW DELHI

ndia’s position, since the Narendra Modi government completed one year in office, has been a matter of wide-ranging discussion and speculation. But how does India fare in its overall competitiveness in comparison with other countries? The approach here for assessing India’s competitiveness based on some recent data and key developments that have taken place in the past year. Along the internal conditions hard facts quadrant, one witnesses an improvement in the inflation data as well as the old GDP data. India’s consumer price inflation (CPI) subdued to 5.01 percent (provisional) in May 2015 against 8.33 percent in May 2014. The RBI has taken cognizance of this development and has adjusted key rates accordingly. An improvement of roughly one percentage point is also observed if one looks at the GDP data from the old series. Also, employment has bettered from May to December 2014 (2,75000 jobs) if one compares it to May to December 2013 (1.26 lakh jobs). Sector-specific data on power also shows that a capacity addition of roughly 22,000 MW in a year-- the largest in a year in India’s history. Data on Index of Industrial Production (IIP) shows that for April 2014 to March 2015 there was growth of 2.8 percent over a con-

traction of -0.1 percent for the same period in the previous year. Thus, quite a lot has been achieved in this sphere. Along the internal conditions policy quadrant, there are three distinct things one observes. First, there is a growing recognition of making states as partners in the development process. make India more competitive. The power to attract investments for states also depends on competitive tax rates that are a bit higher at present at the union level. Second, the urban programme (Smart Cities, AMRUT, housing for all) will hopefully empower city leadership to become more autonomous and independent in deciding the destinies of cities and their residents. Hopefully, it will also lead to better environmentally and economically viable cities of the future. Third, within the railways sector that connects India, the recently released Bibek Debroy committee report is a step in the right direction for modernization. It is thus visible that India is not extremely competitive at present but is bettering its economic prospects.

Despite ambitious plans, India cannot seem to catch up with China in building infrastructure along the 3,488 km border.

NEW DELHI: In 2006-07, India approved the construction of 73 strategic roads along the Sino-Indian border, but 82 percent of these scheduled to be ready by 2012 - are unfinished. The new deadline: 2018. Despite ambitious plans, India cannot seem to catch up with China in building infrastructure and militarizing the 3,488 km border between the two countries. The roads are part of a quiet but extensive Indian border-strengthening plan, which includes a new army corps of 35,000 (down from 90,000) soldiers, specifically to counter China’s burgeoning conventional forces across the Himalayas, and 14 strategic rail links to deploy troops and supplies. There is little doubt that India is wary of Chinese abilities and intentions, despite recent declarations of peace. “It is not a volatile border. Not a single bullet has been fired for over a quarter of a century now,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in an interview with TIME magazine ahead of a visit to China. Modi and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang also agreed to “resolve outstanding differences” and maintain “peace and tranquillity” but on the

border, “transgressions” - as Chinese posturing and troop forays along the unmarked Line of Actual Control (LAC) are called - are common. As many as 1,612 transgressions by Chinese troops inside Indian territory took place between 2010 and August 2014, according to data released by the home ministry. “While our neighboring countries can reach the borders within two or three hours, our army takes more than a day to reach there. This is a matter of great concern with regard to our defense preparedness,” observed a parliamentary committee on defense, alluding to the situation in Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh. No more than 19 of 73 approved roads have been built, according to the report. Delays on 40 roads have pushed deadlines by as far as six years, while construction of two roads has not started. In Assam, India’s longest bridge, 9.15-km long, will be thrown open later this year. It’ll cost Rs.876 crore (nearly $140 million) and is meant to bear the 41.5 tons T-72 tanks and cut travel time to the Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh, which lies along the LAC.

SATNAM CREATES HISTORY Became first Indian to get drafted into National Basketball Association; Picked by Dallas Mavericks

Not easy getting into NBA, says Satnam Singh TALLAHASSEE: A day before the National Basketball Association (NBA) draft arrives to confirm or leave out India’s talented player Satnam Singh, the 19-year-old said it was not easy getting into the tournament. Satnam hails from a remote village in Punjab stands 7 feet 2 inches tall. Canadian-born Sim Bhullar became the NBA’s first player of Indian descent to play in the league last year. “A lot of people are texting me every day, ‘When are you going to the NBA?’ And I say, ‘It’s not easy.’ You work hard, then you go play in the NBA. It’s not easy for anyone,” Satnam was quoted as saying by news.com.au on June 25. Satnam also spoke about how Indi-

ans are taking to the sport in the country stating it has developed over the last few years. “India is a lot better now, A lot of NBA coaches are over there training in Bombay, Delhi and Punjab — my state — too. It’s gotten a lot better in the last two years, three years. It’s (very) popular over there,” he said. When he was 12, Satnam was sent to a government-funded basketball academy and in after two years he moved to Florida where has spent the last five years developing his game. Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal felicitated Satnam for creating history by becoming the first Indian to get drafted into the NBA.

Jwala-Ashwini clinch Canada Open crown CALGARY: India’s most successful women’s doubles shuttlers Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa were crowned champions in the $50,000 Canada Open Grand Prix following their 21-19, 21-16 victory over Dutch pair Eefje Muskens and Selena Piekof in the final here. The 2011 World Championships bronze medal-winning pair took only 35 minutes on June 28 to get the better of Erfje-Selena at the Markin MacPhail Centre. The Indian third seeds, who matched their career-best ranking at No.13 last week, caught a very good start as they took a 6-2 lead even though Erfje-Selena fought back and equalized at 7-7. The Dutch top seeds later were on a roll and wrestled back the ascendancy till the 17-point mark and Jwala-Ashwini were forced to play catch-up game. The Indians succeeded in equalizing at 17-all and sealed the game as the world No.8 Dutch pair remained at 19 points. In the second game, 2010 Commonwealth Games champions played an

attacking game and raced to an 8-2 lead that later swelled to 15-6. Jwala-Ashiwni swung the momentum back in their favor and the 2014 Asian Championships bronze medalwinning pair snatched six points on the trot to bag the game and the match. The pair got $3,950 for winning the title. “It feels great to stand on the wining podium. Hoping to continue the performance and keep up the run,” Jwala, 31, who was playing with a strapped right knee, wrote on Facebook. “It’s a great feeling and I would like to thank you all for the tremendous love and support. ahendra Singh Dhoni has only been rested, so don’t read much into (Ajinkya) Rahane becoming captain. That’s what chief selector Sandeep Patil emphatically told the media after naming the Mumbaikar the India captain for three One-Day Internationals (ODI) and two Twenty20s in Zimbabwe. Patil’s assertion is still open to debate even if there is nothing sinister about Rahane’s elevation. Conventional wisdom tells us that you normally turn to someone who has some captaincy experience as the selectors did in the past. Raina led the side to Zimbabwe in 2010 with Kohli as his deputy. The following year Dhoni was again rested, this time for the ODI tour of the West Indies soon after the World Cup in the subcontinent and an inform Gambhir was the selectors’ choice for captaincy on the strength of his leading the side to a 5-0 whitewash of New Zealand at home, Raina being the second in command. He has been the most consistent batsman for India and we want to see his other aspects. So, we have given him this opportunity and we will keep backing him”. Is he inferring that Rahane is the man to go to in case Dhoni and Kohli do not stop shooting their mouth off? Only time will tell.

MUMBAI: Indian team director Ravi Shastri has quashed reports of unrest in the dressing room over captaincy issues and said Virat Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni have “tremen- Ravi Shastri dous” mutual respect between them. “What people don’t realize is that there is tremendous mutual respect there between Virat Kohli and M.S. Dhoni,” Shastri was quoted as saying by bcci.tv on June 29. “When M.S. was at his prime as India’s Test captain, Virat was only a youngster. There were times when Virat’s place wasn’t certain in the side and MS stuck by him. Such things are not forgotten. I can sense and see that respect without anyone having to tell me.” The reports of conflict within the Indian camp were sparked following the team’s first-ever ODI series loss to minnows Bangladesh.

‘Few people understand Sufi music’ Known for their soulful, expressive singing, the Wadali Brothers believe in giving their own touch to the compositions ANKIT SINHA, NEW DELHI

T

he spiritual and devotional path of Sufi music has enchanted humankind for centuries but nowadays the genre is hogged by people who don’t know or understand Sufism at all, says Piyarelal Wadali of the famed Wadali Brothers. “The songs performed in films are not Sufi. Nobody sings Sufi music in films,” the veteran singer told IANS over phone from Mumbai to a query on what he thought of the Sufi music trend in Bollywood. Lamenting the “herd mentality” prevailing in the music industry, he said: “Nowadays, people who don’t know or understand Sufi claim to be the purveyors of this music. Audiences also believe that. There are few people who understand and sing Sufi.”

People who don’t know or understand Sufi claim to be the purveyors of this music, lament Wadali Brothers (above).

The duo, who were in Mumbai to perform at Mirchi Live’s concert on June 27, also participated at the first season of Coke Studio@MTV and did a re-interpretation of the song Tu mane ya na mane. “We did a program in ‘Coke Studio’ and played ‘Tu mane ya na mane’. It was not originally a Sufi song, but we made that rendition. The individual is

considered as the Almighty in this song,” Piyarelal said. The Wadali Brothers have lent their voices to films like Pinjar and Dhoop and one of their most popular songs was Rangrez mere..., which was featured in the Kangana Ranaut -R. Madhavan-starrer Tanu Weds Manu. Piyarelal reveals it was recorded in a single night.

Serve veggies at dinner to become a loving mom

Hailing from Guru ki Wadali, a small village near Amritsar, the Wadali Brothers — Piyarelal and his elder brother Puranchand — are widely renowned as among the leading exponents of Sufi music in the world and have enthralled audiences in Dubai, the US, Australia, New Zealand and other places. “We play our music according to

I NEW YORK: Do you want to be seen as a more loving parent and a better cook too? Serve vegetables to your kids at dinner time. If families want to eat more vegetables, dinner is the place to start. “If you serve vegetables at dinner, not only will your family think you are a better cook, they will also think you are a more loving parent,” said lead author Brian Wansink, director of the Food and Brand Lab at the Cornell University. “Even if kids may not like the food, simply having a vegetable on the plate

can make the whole meal be perceived as tastier,” Wansink noted. Families are most likely to consume vegetables at dinner time yet only about 23 percent of dinners contain a full serving of vegetables. For the study, 500 mothers were presented with one of five common meat-based hypothetical meals that either contained a side vegetable or no vegetable. The five meals included entrees such as steak, chicken and lasagna and sides such as potatoes, broccoli and breadsticks.

what the audience likes. We observe and understand our audience and then mould our performance according to their liking,” Piyarelal said. He termed Sufi music “a way to connect to one’s guru”. “We consider guru as our god. Nobody has seen god, but he said that if you want to see me, then you should understand yourself. God exists within man,” Piyarelal said. “A Sufi is a fakir (mendicant); he is a spiritual, honest being. The words written by the legends Bulle Shah, Amir Khusrau and the like are called Sufi. If I or someone else were to write it, we cannot call it Sufi,” he said. Known for their soulful and passionate music and expressive singing, the Wadali Brothers believe in giving their own touch to the compositions provided to them by music directors, Piyarelal said. “We take the composition and then we create the songs as per our liking. We make sure to keep our trademark style alive,” he added. Recollecting their earlier days of struggle, Piyarelal said his career didn’t start as a singer but started as a dancer. The Wadali Brothers got their first recognition via All India Radio, Jalandhar, in 1972.

Those who were presented with a meal including a vegetable side, such as broccoli, indicated that the main dish would taste better and that the server was a better cook. “Within two days of discovering this, I changed the way I cook. I no longer say I am too tired to make a vegetable. If nothing else, at least I open up a can of green beans,” said Wansink, also an author of the bestseller “Slim by Design”. The findings were presented at the Society of Nutrition Education and Behavior’s annual conference 2015.

Known for his stand-up acts, which he performs across the world, and work in movies like “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”, “Get Him to the Greek” and “Despicable Me 2”, Brand also wondered how well does the Indian crowd knows him. “I don’t know how well you guys know me... maybe because of my movies, my wedding, controversies and celebrity stuff,” he said, before trying to fathom what could essentially land him in a prison in Delhi or could cause a censorship scandal.

‘Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho’: Satirical mirror of society Film: Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho; Language: Hindi; Cast: Annu Kapoor, Hrishitaa Bhatt, Om Puri, Ravi Kishan, Sanjay Mishra and Rahul Bagga; Director: Vinod Kapri; Rating: **1/2

W

ritten and Directed by a journalist-turned-film director Vinod Kapri, Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho is a social satire inspired by true events. The film delves into how numerous, ridiculously false and blatantly obscure cases are registered in the Indian courts. This vengeance saga, camouflaged as a comedy, reveals the

extent to which some people can stoop and highlights the corruption prevalent in our system. Set in the district of Tanakpur somewhere in Uttar Pradesh, Suvalal Pradhan (Annu Kapoor) a “10+2” educated, village headman and a wannabe politician who often

pouts, “Don’t take me otherwise” is constantly suspicious of his wife, Maya’s (Hrishitaa Bhatt) fidelity, as he is insecure of his own virility. One day, after catching his wife redhanded with her paramour Arjun (Rahul Bagga), he realizes that his own reputation is at stake. So,

seething with anger and revenge on his mind, he accuses Arjun of raping Miss Tanakpur, his buffalo. How he keeps up with this charade, forms the crux of the film. While the premise is amusing, the plot, treated in a satirical manner, meanders capturing Pradhan’s idiosyncrasies. Annu Kapoor straight-faced, puts his heart into the character Suvalal Pradhan and essays the role brilliantly. His dependency on his lackey Bhim Singh (Ravi Kishan) and the village Pandit (Sanjay Mishra) for solutions, create the required situational comedy. Together, they make a hilarious threesome. Overall, this is a fairly enjoyable film, but a tad too lengthy. — Troy Ribeiro

Gujarati couple held for harboring ‘aliens’ BY A STAFF WRITER cPHERSON, KS-- A married couple from Gujarat in India, Satishkumar ‘Sam’ Patel, 47, and his wife, Daxa Patel, 36, who had bought a house, operated two businesses and had a large number of employees working for them, were arrested on 45 counts, including document fraud and making false claims of US citizenship. According to the indictment announced by US Attorney Barry Grissom, the couple unlawfully entered the US in the 1990s and have never acquired legal status to be here. Since then, the Patels have pretended to be US citizens. The couple bought a home in McPherson and obtained social security numbers by claiming to be undocumented but authorized to work. They were able to obtain Kansas driver’s licenses using their illegally obtained Social Security numbers. The couple owned a gas station and convenience store in McPherson called Route 56 Express. They also owned a liquor store in Lawrence. Foreign nationals are not allowed to obtain a retail liquor license in Kansas. The couple is also charged with multiple counts of harboring aliens unlawfully in the US, both by employing them and by providing housing at the Patel’s McPherson home. The indictment also charges four other people from India who were living in the country illegally, plus 53-year-old Nitin Patel, a business partner of Satishkumar Patel’s and two companies owned by the defendants.

M

The Patels face up to 20 years in prison for the bank fraud charge, 10 years for the document fraud charge, three years for the false claim of citizenship charges, and five years for the alien harboring, social security fraud, wire and mail fraud charges. The indictment also seeks criminal forfeiture of money and property related to the alleged crimes, including the business, real estate, cash, and money held in bank accounts controlled by the Patels. Many of those assets were seized, Grissom said. The indictment alleges the Patels were able to obtain a mortgage loan to buy the home by falsely claiming on the mortgage loan

application that they were US citizens. Satishkumar Patel is also charged with wire fraud for allegedly filing false quarterly unemployment insurance reports with the Kansas Department of Labor that listed only one employee, Daxa Patel, for the McPherson gas station when, in fact, at least four other employees worked there. The charges against Satishkumar Patel and Nitin Patel arise out of their ownership of a liquor store in Lawrence in which Satishkumar’s unlawful status in the US and his ownership of the store allegedly were not properly disclosed to the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Division

Upstart Chicagoland institute breeds next generation of coders

www.itinterns.org

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL – More and more children are interacting with technology in every aspect of their lives. However, resources teaching them how it works or how to build it are as good as non-existent. That’s the problem IT Interns, a technology bootcamp and institute, is solving with its ‘Little Coders Club’ courses. With these courses, IT Interns has quickly become the only coding school focused on developing the next generation of technologists and programmers in Chicagoland, filling a much-needed gap in the area. Launched in April, the first five-week ‘Little Coders Club’ course, taught by trainers Brian Anderson and Sam Waddell, breaks down coding for children aged between 8 and 12 with the help of familiar games like Pong and Flappy Bird. Students come away with storyboarding and problem-solving skills, as well as an

understanding of key technical tools that allow them to design and launch their own projects, which they showcase at the end of the course in a school-supported Demo Day. Students are also given completion certificates for their hard work throughout the course. “With the Little Coders program, we’re giving kids the chance to learn real-world coding skills in a fun and engaging way. Now, they’re not just playing games on their smart phones or online, they’re actually building them. We’re transforming our students into makers,” said Nauman Khan, founder and director of IT Interns, the institute behind the program. This concept-- instilling a sense of craft in students that will stick with them well beyond childhood--has struck a chord with the Little Coders and their parents alike. “When I first signed up Vishnu Balak for the class, I was thinking it would be good for him to get some technical training that he could

use, that could get him into technology so he could pursue it later on. And then I saw the look on his face when he showed me what he’d made. That’s the most important thing. It makes me value the course in a whole new way,” says Raji Balak. Another parent, Hasan Syed, echoed this sentiment and added, “I knew [this program] was special when my son started saying he wanted fewer snack breaks and less pizza time, so he could get even more time with his project. He was so excited about his game, he wanted to spend every minute making it.” As students graduate from the first ‘Little Coders Club’ course, they have the chance to continue honing their skills through additional classes. Just like learning a new language or sport, coding requires practice and attention, two things students who stay in the ‘Little Coders Club’ get from their experienced trainers. As they move through the courses, they

develop more and more skills that allow them to pursue complicated projects and even apply their knowledge to professional opportunities in the future. As a result, IT Interns is promoting a new generation of skilled technologists who will continue to advance existing technologies and build new ones as they grow and learn. “I work in technology now and we need young people who grew up knowing technology. Because then it comes more naturally to them. They work faster and smarter. I put own my daughter through these classes because I know that she can make a difference in almost any industry she wants with these skills,” said Mike Christesen. Registration for “Little Coders Club” Levels 1 and 2 are open. Littler Coders Orientation on July 11th from 11 am to 1 pm. Go to www.itinterns.org or call 847-3063694 to register (ADVERTORIAL)

M

ONTICELLO, NY -Under sunny blue skies with more than 150 people attending, entrepreneur Dr. Subhash Chandra, officials of Z Living/Veria Lifestyle and local and state dignitaries broke ground on the Z Living/ Veria Nature Cure & Ayurvedic Wellness Center on June 21. The project is being spearheaded by Indian billionaire Dr. Subhash Chandra, chairman of the Essel Group of Companies.

(L-R) Mike McCormack, Chrissy Schiff, Chris Gibson, Scott B.. Bill Rieber; Mark Kutsher;, Walter Garigliano, Marc Baez Roberta Byron- Sant Singh Chatwal; & Dr. Subhash Chandra He has invested $18 million thus far as part of a $90-million plan for the first phase to turn the legendary Kutsher’s Country Club in Sullivan County into the 260,000-square-foot Z Living/Veria Nature Cure and Ayurvedic Wellness Center. This is just part of his total commitment to invest $250 million for the Wellness Center and overall wellness programming. They broke ground on the first official International Yoga Day because the Wellness Center will also be practising yogic sciences and yoga will be one of the

major daily rituals. The modern, exclusive center will be based upon five ancient sciences-- nature cure, Ayurveda, yogic sciences, nutrition and acupuncture. It will offer treatments such as hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, in addition to a yoga center, fitness center, private and couple treatment rooms and a swimming pool with nature garden. A full-service restaurant with a teaching and observation kitchen, nutrition center and several juice bars dispersed throughout the facility will complete the food and

beverage services. There will also be space for gift shops, essential shops, a salon and a theater. Also, it will include a museum, which will show the center’s wellness philosophy, the body systems and how they work and also react in deviation from natural laws. It also introduces guests to naturopathic management of such aberrations. The golden shovel groundbreaking took place on the western bank of Bailey Lake on an undisturbed, maturely vegetated and sloping site in the Town of Thompson.

Tony Santino nominated for Hemstead town supervisor BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- There is great jubilation among the Indian American community that Tony Santino, a close friend of the community for over two decades, has been nominated to run for the Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead in November. “We would never have been able to celebrate Dussehra in Nassau Beach Park if Santino wasn’t there to help us get all the necessary permits from the Hempstead Township,” says Varinder Bhalla, president and founder of the AWB Food Bank, a hunger relief organization which commemorated the first-ever Dussehra celebration in the United States in 1994. Dr. Sunil Mehra, former president of Long Island-Queens AAPI and the Indian Association of Long Island, reiterates the bond that the senior Hempstead Councilman has built with the community over the past two decades. “For over 20 years, Santino has been the liaison of the Indian community and the go-to person for any governmental assistance from the Hempstead Town and Nassau County governments,” says Mehra. Santino was first elected to the Hempstead Town Board in 1993 and has been re-elected every four years with a large plurality. He has been a consistent supporter of the India Association of Long Island and its food drives to benefit the

Interfaith Nutrition Network. The India Association honored the Councilman in 1999 for his active participation in their many charitable and social activities. The Gujarati Samaj of New York also honored Councilman Santino in 2004 for his dedication to the community. “Councilman Santino is also very active with the Shanti Fund, a charitable organization which promotes peace through education and is dedicated to advancing the teachings and memory of

Mahatma Gandhi,” says Arvind Vora. Santino was named Shanti Fund’s Man of the Year in 1997. The Councilman’s outreach to the Indian American community also includes active participation in the Five Towns Indian Association and the Elmont-based Kerala Center. Both organizations have honored Santino for his work on behalf of all Indian Americans on Long Island. On January 26, 2003, Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilman Santino

unfurled the Indian tricolor flag outside the Hempstead Town Hall – the first time ever by any township across New York – and launched the celebration of the Republic Day of India, which is commemorated annually. On the personal side, Councilman Santino has long held an avid interest in the history, culture and cuisine of India. “His Indian American friends are often astonished at his knowledge of Indian food and the fact that he has eaten at almost every Indian restaurant in Nassau County – and many in Suffolk County,” says Bhalla. In recognition of Councilman Santino’s two decades of dedicated service to the Indian American community, the Indian American Voters Forum of New York honored him on August 15, 2014 at the Consulate of India, where Ambassador Dnyaneshway Mulay presented him a plaque on their behalf. In a recent interview with Bhalla, Santino said, “As Senior Councilman of the Hempstead Township, I have worked closely with the Indian American community on Long Island, but I will be able to do a lot more when I get elected Supervisor in November.” “Tony Santino has stood by the Indian community; it is high time we return the favor and support him wholeheartedly in his upcoming election as the Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead,” says Bhalla.

Pro-ISIS man faces 8 year BY Amisleading STAFF WRITER jail for FBI BY A STAFF WRITER ESQUITE, T X-- A Mesquite man faces federal charges of lying to the FBI about pledging allegiance to an Islamic State terrorist leader. Agents arrested Bilal Abood, 37, last month. A magistrate judge ordered that he remain in federal custody as a flight risk. A one-count indictment issued on June 10 alleges that Abood made a false statement to a federal agency. Abood pledged allegiance over social media to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of Islamic State, and forwarded propaganda from the terrorist network, prosecutors said. He is accused of lying to the FBI about his allegiance to alBaghdadi. If convicted, Abood faces up to eight years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000. Abood traveled to Syria after FBI agents warned against that, according to prosecutors. He allegedly claimed that he wanted to fight with the Free Syrian Army, which opposes the Islamic State, or ISIS. He was stopped at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and in San Antonio the first two times he tried to travel abroad but later crossed into Mexico and traveled to Syria through Turkey, authorities said. But federal authorities allege that Abood’s real reason for trying to travel abroad was to wage jihad and die a martyr. When questioned by the FBI, Abood denied providing financial support to the Islamic State or any other terrorist organizations. But in July 2014, the FBI searched Abood’s computers and found that he pledged an oath to al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State.

Dr. Patel’s concern for the welfare of others led him to serve since 1999 in a nonprofit organization called Indian Health Camp of New Jersey and many other

religious and community organizations to provide basic health screening and disease prevention throughout the state. Dr. Patel made a meaningful impact

on communities without the expectation of recognition or compensation. Through his outstanding acts of public service, he has proven his dedication to assisting his fellow residents and making New Jersey a better place. NJ State Governor’s Jefferson Awards for Public Service has been awarded since 2007 to dedicated individuals for their public service. In her speech, Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno congratulated this year’s honorees and expressed her appreciation by saying “we are humbled by the selfless contributions of those recognized this evening and extend our gratitude to those who strive to serve others in need and improve the communities of New Jersey”. Steve Adubato performed an excellent job of master of ceremonies to keep audience engaged by his wonderful presentation. Atlantic City Mayor Donald Guardian, Linda Bowden, president of PNC Bank New Jersey, Steven Kern, CEO/Director Newark Museum, and Matt Kraner, president, NJ Advanced Media were among the other prominent attendees and part of the presentation.

AN DIMAS , CA -- As friends, family members and customers on June 10 mourned the victim of a fatal shooting outside a Quiznos restaurant in San Dimas, authorities were searching for the man who killed him. The gunman entered the Quiznos in the 1000 block of West Arrow Highway at about 3:25 pm on June 9 and pulled out a handgun, Sgt. Rebecca Rodriguez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department said. The man demanded money from the person behind the counter and threatened to kill customers if it wasn’t given to him. “The employee gave over the money and he followed the suspect outside of the location. A struggle ensued in front of the store and the suspect shot the victim,” Rodriguez said. The victim, later identified by the coroner’s office as 62-year-old Pravin Patel, was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital, according to a Sheriff ’s Department news release. In 2005, he performed the world’s first simultaneous hybrid revascularisation, which involved two major procedures - coronary artery bypass and stent replacement, using a robotic system known as the Da Vinci Surgical System. Alzheimer’s may begin two decades before diagnosis NEW YORK: Even if symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease become apparent in old age, the biological processes that cause the mental decline may begin a couple of decades ago in the ‘middle age’, suggests a new study by an Indian-origin researcher. Low scores on memory and thinking tests may signal Alzheimer’s up to 18 years before the disease can be diagnosed, the findings showed. “The changes in thinking and memory that precede obvious symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease begin decades before,” said study author Kumar Bharat Rajan, assistant professor at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. “While we cannot currently detect such changes in individuals at risk, we were able to observe them among a group of individuals who eventually developed dementia due to Alzheimer’s,” said Rajan, an alumnus of Madras Christian College. For the study, 2,125 people from Chicago, with an average age of 73, without Alzheimer’s disease were given tests of memory and thinking skills every three years for 18 years. The researchers found that those

who were finally diagnosed with Alzheimer’s scored lower on the scored lower overall on the memory and thinking tests throughout the study. One unit lower in performance of the standardized cognitive test score was associated with an 85 percent

Changes in memory that precede symptoms of Alzheimer’s begin decades before greater risk of future dementia. “A general current concept is that in development of Alzheimer’s disease, certain physical and biologic changes precede memory and thinking impairment. If this is so then these underlying processes may have a very long duration. Efforts to successfully prevent the disease may well require a better understanding of these processes near middle age,” Rajan said. The research was published online in the journal Neurology.

Young, fit people lose more muscle mass if inactive IANS, LONDON

I

f you stop using your legs just for two weeks, you would lose a third of your muscular strength even if you are quite young and strong, says a new study. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen examined what happens to the muscles in younger and older men after a period of high inactivity — for example when we are injured, fall ill or simply take a very relaxing holiday. “Our experiments reveal that inactivity affects the muscular strength in young and older men equally. Having had one leg immobilized for two weeks, young people lose up to a third of their muscular strength, while older people lose

around one fourth,” said researcher Andreas Vigelsoe. “A young man who is immobilized for two weeks loses muscular strength in his leg equivalent to aging by 40 or 50 years,” Vigelsoe added. With age, our total muscle mass diminishes, which is why young men have around one kilogram more muscle mass in each leg than older men. Both groups lose muscle mass when immobilized for two weeks young men lose 485 grams on average, while older men lose approximately 250 grams. The participants’ physical fitness was also reduced while their one leg was immobilized in a pad. “The more muscle mass you have, the more you’ll lose. Which means

that if you’re fit and become injured, you’ll most likely lose more muscle mass than someone who is unfit, over the same period of time,” said

co-researcher Martin Gram. “But even though older people lose less muscle mass and their level of fitness is reduced slightly less than in young

people, the loss of muscle mass is presumably more critical for older people, because it is likely to have a greater impact on their general health and quality of life,” Gram added. After two weeks of immobilization, the participants bicycle-trained 3-4 times a week for six weeks. “Unfortunately, bicycle-training is not enough. If you want to regain your muscular strength following a period of inactivity, you need to include weight training,” Andreas Vigelsoe said. “It’s interesting that inactivity causes such rapid loss of muscle mass, in fact it’ll take you three times the amount of time you were inactive to regain the muscle mass that you have lost,” Gram added.

Flavor your party

with new age cocktails From delicious pani-puri to scrumptious cupcakes, vodka mixers have gone through a huge evolution IANS, NEW DELHI

P

lanning a party can often be confusing, especially when you have no idea what drinks to serve the guests. Try five new age drink mixes that are easy to make. Smirnoff, one of the largest vodka brand in the world, brings you five vodka trends with new age mixes: * Popsicles: Mix 30 ml Smirnoff orange vodka with 90ml tonic water and evenly pour it into popsicle trays or cups. Insert a popsicle stick and leave it to freeze overnight. * Tabasco and Dark Chocolate: Take 30 ml Smirnoff Black with ice and a dash of tabasco and dark chocolate. The boldness and smoothness will leave you asking for more. * Vanilla and Vodka Cupcakes: Yes, you read that right. Cupcakes may have been the rage when it comes to food trends, but now vodka-infused cupcakes are the next big thing. Try making vanilla cupcakes by replacing one out of two teaspoons of vanilla extract with Smirnoff vodka. * Pani puri: Vodka pani puri is

Thank your customers to reap big rewards IANS, NEW YORK

A

Mumbai's street staple with a twist. Add Smirnoff classic vodka to the spicy pani puri water, and you have a zesty snack-cum-drink waiting to be devored. Add 30 ml vodka to 250 ml of pani puri water. This provides 10 pani puris.

Look beyond smoky eyes for parties IANS, LOS ANGELES

T

he party season is still not over, so forget the same old smoky eye make-up. Try other interesting looks instead. Whether you’re heading out to a party or planning a night at home with friends, the following looks will help you to look good, reports peoplestylewatch.com. * Shimmery eye shadow: If you’re all about glitter and glitz, then a shimmery eye shadow is the perfect look for you. Just coat your favorite copper shadow on your lids. Then, to really make your eyes pop, brush on some silver shadow in the inner corners and skim a brown eyeliner on the lower lash line. Then brush on a couple of coats of mascara, and you’re good to go. * Exaggerated cat eye make-up: Cat-eye liner is a universal make-

up trick that looks great on just about everyone. But the exaggerated version? It’s a little harder to apply during the day, but it’s the perfect look for a party-filled night. * Bright, bold lip: Leave the lip gloss at home and instead opt for a darker and richer hue. Just add a swipe of your favorite dark lip stain (red, wine or plum) to your pout before heading out to pair with your winged-out liner or shimmery eyes.

*Penne ala Vodka Sauce: A smooth, creamy sauce made with tomatoes, cream and a splash of vodka — Vodka sauce is becoming increasingly popular. Be sure to add some vodka to your pasta for sharp taste and a touch of heat.

sincere, well timed "thank you" for customers can reap huge rewards for companies, says a marketing scholar from Michigan State University. According to the study which focused on an upscale sit-down restaurant, satisfied customers who received an acknowledgement of their comments from the company president increased patronage to the business by more than 50 percent. The simple gesture of thanking customers was just as effective - and less damaging to the company's bottom line - as acknowledgements that included rewards in the form of gift cards and guaranteed

reservations. "These findings suggest that simple, sincere gestures are enough to drive feelings of gratitude among consumers," said Clay Voorhees, associate professor of marketing and lead author of the study. Voorhees and his fellow researchers tracked patrons' attitudes and behaviors for a year after they gave the eatery high marks. While firms routinely collect customer feedback, few act on this information. Further, little attention is given to managing feedback from highly satisfied customers. Within a week of completing the online satisfaction survey, customers were sent a thank you email from the company president.

Stay healthy in 2015 with proper diet, right exercise LOS ANGELES: Looking to shape up in the New Year? Check your diet, pick exercises wisely and more. Fitness expert Tracy Anderson shares how to stay in shape, reports people.com. l Be honest with yourself about the body you want: Have a real conversation about where you’re at with your health. You need to find exercises with some sort of strategy behind them, a strategy for how you want your body to look and perform. l Exercise five to seven days a week: If you don’t work out one day, you’re going to stay the same or gain weight. We need to get used to taking care of our bodies. We spend five minutes a day brushing our teeth, and teeth are tiny in comparison to the rest of our bodies. So if teeth take up five minutes of your day, the rest of your body can take up 30 to 60 minutes. l Diet and exercise go hand in hand: If you have weight to lose, you have to train yourself to be good at exercise. And diet is definitely important, but it’s not about calorie restriction. Avoid processed foods, and include foods that as are as close to nature as possible, as well as greens and superfoods like mulberries. l Create a good playlist: Working out to music is something that people need to do.
