Are 300,000 migrant children missing in the US?
THiIndia Newsdesk
om Homan, Donald Trump's incoming border chief, has alleged that over 300,000 migrant children released to sponsors in the U.S. are "unaccounted for" and at risk of forced labor and sex trafficking. He accused the Biden administration of prioritizing speed over safety in placing these children with unvetted sponsors.
Vice-President-elect JD Vance echoed similar concerns, citing a figure of 320,000 "lost" children during a recent debate. Republicans, including Tennessee Representative Mark Green, have called it a failure of the BidenHarris administration to protect vulnerable children from exploitation. The claims are rooted in an August report by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which revealed that 32,000 minors failed to attend immigration court dates between 2019 and 2023. Additionally, 291,000 children were never issued court notices, increasing their risk of exploitation, according to DHS. However, experts argue that the term "missing" is misleading. Aaron
Three Americans released in US-China prisoner exchange
Three Americans detained in China were released after the Biden administration negotiated a prisoner swap.
Mark Swidan, Kai Li, and John Leung are on their way back to the US, a spokesperson for the National Security Council (NSC) said in a statement on Wednesday. "Soon they will return and be reunited with their families for the first time in many years," the statement said. The exchange was reportedly months in the making, and included the release of at least one Chinese citizen in US custody.
US Urges Ukraine to Lower Draft Age to 18
Ukraine should consider lowering the age of military service for its soldiers to 18 years old, a senior US administration official said on Wednesday, putting pressure on Kyiv to bolster its fighting forces in the country's war with Russia. Speaking to reporters, the official said Ukraine was not mobilizing or training enough new soldiers for the conflict. "The need right now is manpower," he said. "The Russians are in fact making progress, steady progress, in the east, and they are beginning to push back Ukrainian lines in Kursk ... Mobilization and more manpower could make a significant difference at this time as we look at the battlefield today."
Vice-President-elect JD Vance echoed similar concerns, citing a figure of 320,000 "lost" children during a recent debate. Republicans, including Tennessee Representative Mark Green, have called it a failure of the Biden-Harris administration to protect vulnerable children from exploitation.
Reichlin-Melnick from the American Immigration Council described the issue as a bureaucratic oversight rather than a sinister crisis. "Most children may still be at their registered addresses but missed court dates due to logistical errors," he said. While acknowledging the potential for exploitation, ReichlinMelnick emphasized that it is inaccurate to claim all 320,000 children are trafficked. Eric Ruark of NumbersUSA, an organization advocating stricter immigration controls, criticized the Biden administration for failing to
track these children but noted that many are likely safe with responsible sponsors. Currently, unaccompanied minors at the U.S.-Mexico border are detained by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) before being transferred to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). HHS places them in state-licensed facilities or with sponsors, who are expected to ensure their attendance at immigration hearings.
The Trump administration has not detailed specific plans to address the issue but is expected to tighten the vetting process for sponsors, even family members, which may result in more children remaining in detention. Some experts suggest the controversial "Remain in Mexico" policy could be extended to minors, forcing them to wait in Mexico during their immigration proceedings.
Trump's team has blamed "Democrats' open-border policies" for the situation and vowed to secure the border to protect migrant children. However, concrete measures to address the status of these children remain unclear.
Bomb threats made against Trump cabinet nominees
Several of Donald Trump’s cabinet nominees and picks for his White House team have been targeted by bomb threats. The FBI said it was aware of "numerous bomb threats" as well as "swatting incidents", in which hoax calls are made to attract a police response to the target's home.
Threats were made against Trump's choices to lead the departments of Housing, Agriculture and Labor, as well as his pick for US ambassador to the
United Nations.
Police are investigating the incidents, which happened on Tuesday night and
Wednesday morning.
Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for Trump's transition team, said the Trump appointees “were targeted in violent, unAmerican threats to their lives and those who live with them”.
She said that several people had been targeted and "law enforcement acted quickly to ensure" their safety.
"With President Trump as our example, dangerous acts of intimidation and violence will not deter us,” she said. Neither Leavitt nor the FBI identified any of the targets by name.
Trump Cutting Ukraine Aid Would Be A "Death Sentence" For Its Army: Russia
Russia's deputy U.N. ambassador said on Wednesday any decision by President-elect Donald Trump's incoming administration to cut support for Ukraine would be a "death sentence" for the Ukrainian army, while accusing Kyiv of trying to drag NATO countries into direct conflict with Russia in the meantime.
Speaking to the U.N. Security Council, Dmitry Polyanskiy accused the outgoing Biden administration of trying through its increased support to Ukraine to create a "mess, both in Russia and with the new team in the White House."
Polyanskiy said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was terrified of the return of Trump in January, and had reason to be so.
"Even if we're to lay to one side the prediction that Donald Trump will cut assistance to Ukraine, which for the Ukrainian army would essentially be a death sentence, it is becoming clearer that he and his team will, in any case, conduct an audit of the assistance provided to Kyiv," he said. Trump's transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Polyanskiy's remarks. Three sources with knowledge of the
matter told Reuters earlier that Trump is considering Keith Kellogg, a retired lieutenant general who has presented him with a plan to end the Ukraine war, as a special envoy for the conflict.
Keith Kellogg's plan for ending the war, which began when Russia invaded Ukrainian sovereign territory, involves freezing battle lines at their current locations and forcing Kyiv and Moscow to the negotiating table, Reuters reported in June.
Polyanskiy said Russia had repeatedly offered to negotiate but Ukraine and its Western backers have favored escalation. He warned the decision by the Biden administration and its European allies to authorize the Ukrainian army to use long-range missiles far inside Russia had "placed the world on the brink of a global nuclear conflict."

After Donald Trump Vows Big Tariffs, A Warning From China Over Trade War
Tariffs are a key part of Trump's economic agenda, with the Republican vowing wideranging duties on allies and adversaries alike while he was on the campaign trail
HiIndia Newsdesk
Beijing: China warned on Tuesday that "no one will win a trade war" after US President-elect Donald Trump vowed to impose sweeping tariffs on goods from China and elsewhere in response to illegal drug trade and immigration.
"China believes that China-US economic and trade cooperation is mutually beneficial in nature," Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for China's embassy in the United States, said in an email to AFP.
In a series of posts to his Truth Social account, Trump on Monday vowed to hit some of the United States' largest trading partners with duties on all goods entering the country.
He said he would also be slapping China with a 10 percent tariff, "above any additional Tariffs," in response to what he said was its failure to tackle fentanyl
US Universities Alert International Students On Trump Immigration Crackdown
HiIndia Newsdesk
Washington DC: Universities in the United States reportedly urged international students and staff to return to campus before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January. Several higher education institutes in the US reported that international students and staff members are feeling uncertain about their future amid concerns over his plans for mass deportation of immigrants, according to a report by BBC.
US President-elect Trump, during the election campaign, pledged to enact the largest deportation operation in history and even enlist the help of the US military to actualize the operation.
The Republican leader, who is set to take office on January 20, attempted to end the Obama-era programme shielding over half a million migrants who came to the US as children from deportation
during his first presidency. "Students are incredibly overwhelmed and stressed out right now as a result of the uncertainty around immigration," BBC report quoted professor Chloe East of the University of Colorado, Denver as saying.
"A lot of students have concerns about their visas and whether they'll be allowed to continue their education."
The University of Massachusetts, on November 5, issued a travel advisory to its international students, faculty and staff, asking them to "strongly consider" returning to campus from winter break before Mr Trump's inaugural on January 5.
Tariffs Will Not Stop US-Bound Migrants Or Drugs, Mexico Tells Donald Trump
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday that import tariffs proposed by President-elect Donald Trump will do nothing to stop USbound undocumented migration or drug trafficking.
"President Trump, it is not with threats or tariffs that the migration phenomenon will be stopped, nor the consumption of drugs in the United States," she told reporters, reading a letter she will send to Trump in which she proposes dialogue.
Trump said Monday he would impose a 25 percent tariff on all imports from Mexico and Canada as one of his first actions upon becoming US president in January. "This Tariff will remain in effect
until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social page, without mentioning the trilateral free trade agreement both countries share with the United States.
He also vowed a 10 percent tariff on

imports from China. The United States, Mexico and Canada are tied to a three-decade-old free trade agreement, now called the USMCA, that was renegotiated under Trump after he complained that US businesses, especially automakers, were losing out.
Trump, who won an election in which illegal migration was a top issue, has vowed to declare a national emergency on border security and use the US military to carry out a mass deportation of undocumented migrants.
Ning said: "As a principle, we are open to maintaining dialogue and communication."

Washington has long accused Beijing of complicity in the deadly fentanyl trade that has ravaged communities across the country.
The embassy in Washington's Liu rebuffed those claims in his statement, detailing steps that Beijing was taking to help curb the trade.
"All these prove that the idea of China knowingly allowing fentanyl precursors to flow into the United States runs completely counter to facts and reality," he said.
US Influencer Sentenced To 10 Years
Texas influencer Ashley Grayson has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for attempting to hire someone to murder three people- including a business rival and someone who trashed her on social media, the New York Post reported.
According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Tennessee, Grayson, 35, gained fame on social media for her online business and courses teaching others how to monetize their skills.
Acting U.S. Attorney Reagan Fondren announced on Monday, Nov. 18, that Grayson was found guilty of a murder-for-hire conspiracy.
The press release revealed that in September 2022, Grayson offered to pay a Memphis-based couple to kill three targets: her ex-boyfriend, a woman who had criticized her on social media, and a Mississippi woman with a similar business model. Grayson believed the latter had created fake profiles to disparage her work online.

Maharashtra Chief Minister To Be From BJP, Will Have 2 Deputies: Sources
HiIndia Newsdesk
New Delhi: The next Chief Minister of Maharashtra will be from the Bharatiya Janata Party, and s/he will be backed by two deputies drawn, most likely, from Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena faction, and that of Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party, sources told NDTV Wednesday evening.
The arrangement mirrors the deal three had leading up to this election, except the BJP has the upper hand now - after a dominant victory last week. The saffron party thumped the Maha Vikas Aghadi, the rival alliance of the Congress and the Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar factions of the Sena and NCP, winning 132 (of 288) Assembly seats on its own and 235 with its allies.
While the new Chief Minister has not yet been named, the smart money appears to be on the BJP's Devendra Fadnavis, who held the post between 2014 and 2019, and for few days again

According to information received so far, Mr Soren's Jharkhand Mukti Morcha or JMM has not received any list of ministers from ally Congress. Sources indicated that the cabinet will be expanded next week, after the new government takes the vote of confidence. Once victory was confirmed both Mr Shinde and Mr Fadnavis played down talk of a race for the Chief Minister's post - one that threatened to uncover potential cracks in their alliance, particularly as it became clear the BJP, as in 2022, would need an ally to form the government.
"There will be no dispute... it was decided from day one that, after the election, the leaders of the three parties will sit together and decide," Mr Fadnavis told reporters, while Mr Shinde said, "... we fought the election together (and) all three parties will sit together and take this decision."
Lalit Modi Accuses N Srinivasan, CSK of Indirect Fixing
Lalit Modi, the founder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and former vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has made serious allegations against ex-cricket administrator N Srinivasan and his
co-owned franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Notably, the latter has served as International Cricket Council chairman and BCCI president in the past. While making startling revelations in a recent interview, Modi said that the IPL governing body did "bid rigging" during auction for the second edition to make sure Andrew Flintoff went to CSK. He added that this was done in order to fulfil the wish of Srinivasan. Modi also alleged Srinivasan and CSK of "indirect fixing".
"Pick out everything-auction rigging. I gave Flintoff to Srinivasan. Yes, we did it. No doubts about it; every team knew about it. Srinivasan wasn't going to let the IPL happen.
Indian Students Outnumber Chinese In US Universities, A First In 15 Years
The American Dream has always attracted students from developing nations and Chinese students have always dominated the international student population in US universities. However, recent statistics indicate a significant shift in this trend. According to the US State Department and the Institute of International Education, Indian students have surpassed Chinese students as the largest group of international students in American higher education - for the first time since 2009.
India made up 29% of international students, but China was still a major source, constituting about one-fourth of international students.
It is worthwhile to note that 40% of Indians are under 25 which is promising
for the country's economy as compared to China, where the population has just begun to age.
According to a report by CNN, experts attribute this decline to significant shifts in both policy and public perception. Many Chinese students and families are concerned about safety, racism, and discrimination in the US.
The COVID-19 pandemic has also exacerbated these concerns, with a rise in anti-Asian hate crimes and racism.
The downward spiral in US-China relations has also contributed to the decline. The Trump administration's policies, including the cancellation of the Fulbright exchange program with China and the introduction of a ban on graduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students from several Chinese universities, have made it difficult for Chinese students to secure visas. The decline in Chinese students in the US doesn't necessarily mean there's less appetite for an overseas education. Instead, students and parents are exploring alternative options. Countries like Canada, the UK, and Australia have introduced more immigration-friendly policies, making them attractive alternatives to the US.

Some of his leaders had openly questioned why Maharashtra cannot be another Bihar, where Nitish Kumar plays a dominant role despite better performance by the BJP in elections. Earlier today, in a throwback to 2019, Shinbde fcationn leaders claimed off the record that the BJP had promised them the Chief Minister post ahead of the assembly elections. Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Begins After Months Of All-Out War
Israel has initiated a ceasefire with Hezbollah in Lebanon following intense global pressure for peace in the Middle East. However, military operations will continue in Gaza, where Israel remains committed to eliminating Hamas.
The ceasefire, brokered by the US and France, was approved by Israel’s cabinet in a 10-1 vote. US President Joe Biden hailed it as a "new start" for Lebanon, with the truce taking effect from 4 am (7:30 am IST). Hezbollah did not participate directly in the negotiations, which were attended by Lebanese parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of retaliation if Hezbollah violates the ceasefire but
emphasized that the truce allows Israel to focus on Gaza and the "Iranian threat." He vowed to dismantle Hamas, rescue Israeli hostages, and neutralize Gaza as a security threat.
Under the agreement, Lebanese forces will deploy towards the southern border over the next 60 days, prompting a phased Israeli withdrawal. Hezbollah will retreat north of the Litani River as part of the deal.
Despite the ceasefire, Israeli airstrikes continued in Beirut until just before the truce began. The ceasefire follows Israel's heaviest raids on the Lebanese capital since September.
The Middle East remains tense, with Israel facing Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza, both backed by Iran. Meanwhile, Israel and Iran have exchanged fire amid the ongoing conflict.
President Biden expressed hope that the Lebanon ceasefire could pave the way for peace in Gaza and the release of hostages. An unnamed US official described the agreement as a potential "stepping stone" toward broader regional stability.

Mukul Rohatgi Punches Holes In US Indictment Linked To Adani Group
New Delhi: Punching holes in the allegations against Adani Group, senior lawyer and former Attorney General of India Mukul Rohatgi today said the group's founder chairman Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani have not been accused of bribery or obstructing justice in the US. The senior lawyer addressed the media to counter misleading news reports on the US Department of Justice indictment.
"At the outset, I want to tell you that these are my personal legal views. I am
not a spokesman for the Adani Group. I am a lawyer. I have been appearing for the Adani Group in several cases. I have gone through this indictment by the US court. There are five charges. It is very important to note that Count 1
and Count 5 are more important than the others. But neither in Count 1 nor Count 5 is Mr Adani or his nephew charged. This is like a chargesheet that charges individuals for specific acts. Count 1 is against certain other persons minus the two Adanis. It includes some officers and one foreign person. The first allegation is there is a conspiracy to violate the (US) Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. In that, the Adanis are not named," he said. Mr Rohatgi said the Adanis and others are named in counts relating to securities and bonds.

NATO Vows Ukraine Backing After Russian Missile 'Intimidation'
HiIndia Newsdesk
NATO pledged support for Ukraine at talks in Brussels Tuesday after Russia's attempt to "intimidate" Kyiv's backers by firing an experimental hypersonic intermediate-range missile last week.
Russia on Thursday carried out a strike on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro which President Vladimir Putin said was a test of its new Oreshnik missile.
Putin said the missile attack was in response to Ukraine firing weapons supplied by the United States and Britain into Russia.
The Kremlin leader warned that Moscow felt "entitled" to hit military facilities in countries that allow Ukraine to use their weapons against Russia.
"During the meeting, NATO allies reaffirmed their support for Ukraine," the alliance said in a statement after the talks.
"The attack, which targeted Dnipro, is seen as another attempt by Russia to terrorise the civilian population in Ukraine and intimidate those who
support Ukraine as it defends itself against Russia's illegal and unprovoked aggression."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had called the strike "the latest bout of Russian madness" and appealed for updated air-defence systems to meet the new threat.
Kyiv called for "concrete and meaningful
outcomes" after calling the meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council.
A NATO official said Ukraine identified air defence systems that it needs to try to counter the new missile threat from Moscow ahead of a gathering of alliance foreign ministers in Brussels next week. Some allies hinted that they could make announcements at the meeting next week on fresh air defences for Kyiv, the
Nepal Says No Loan Pact Will Be Signed During PM Oli's Visit To Beijing
HiIndia Newsdesk
Kathmandu: Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, ahead of his five-day visit to China on December 2, clarified that no loan agreement will be signed with Beijing during the trip. His statement follows reports of tensions within Nepal's ruling coalition over financing Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects. During a meeting with former prime ministers and foreign ministers, Oli emphasized that the BRI agreement with China is not loan-based. "We take loans or grants as per our national interest, not based on rumors about debt traps," Oli said. He reiterated Nepal's commitment to sovereignty, independence, and national welfare
when engaging with any country.
The issue has divided Nepal’s ruling coalition, with the Nepali Congress party, led by Sher Bahadur Deuba, favoring grants under BRI, while Oli's Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) is open
to loans. Oli’s upcoming visit to China marks a departure from the tradition of newly elected Nepali leaders visiting India first, reflecting his pro-China stance. His office defended the move, stating no formal invitation from India had been received. Oli has consistently pushed for stronger ties with China. His previous term as prime minister in 2016 saw efforts to enhance cross-border rail connectivity, infrastructure, trade, and tourism under BRI. This visit is expected to further these objectives and strengthen Nepal-China relations. Oli's pro-China policies aim to diversify Nepal’s foreign partnerships, reducing dependence on India, and expanding regional connectivity and economic cooperation with China.
The Kremlin leader warned that Moscow felt "entitled" to hit military facilities in countries that allow Ukraine to use their weapons against Russia.
official said.
The escalating tensions over Ukraine come as questions hang over the future of Western support following the reelection of Donald Trump in main NATO power the United States.
Moscow on Tuesday pledged "retaliatory actions" to fresh Ukrainian air attacks inside Russia using US-supplied ATACMS missiles.
In a rare admission, Russia said the fresh strikes had caused damage to military hardware and wounded some of its personnel on the ground in the Kursk region.
Trump has cast doubt on maintaining Washington's vast military aid for Kyiv and pledged a quick deal to end the war.
On the battlefield, Ukraine's fatigued troops are struggling to halt advances by Russian forces in the east of the country. NATO and Ukraine established the joint council in 2023 that allows Kyiv to call meetings with the alliance when it sees fit.
HK Court Backs SameSex Couples' Housing, Inheritance Rights
Hong Kong's top court has made a landmark ruling in favour of same-sex married couples, upholding their rights to subsidised housing benefits and equal inheritance. This decision marks a significant victory for the LGBTQ+ community in Hong Kong, who have traditionally faced discrimination and fewer rights compared to heterosexual couples. According to the Associated Press, Court of Final Appeal's unanimous decision dismissed the government's appeals, ending years-long legal battles over the differential treatment of same-sex couples married overseas.
Paris Airport Shuts Runways In Search For Pet Dog On The Run For A Week
Paris: Two runways were closed at Paris Charles-de-Gaulle airport Tuesday as officials tried to capture a dog a week after it escaped from an aircraft, Air France and airport sources said. Since the dog, a female, slipped out of a carrier cage last Tuesday during an unloading operation, there has been an intense search for the pet, owned by a Croatian tourist who came to France on Air France from Vienna. Airport police needed to deploy a search drone Tuesday, requiring the closures. "The animal has been spotted and approached several times, but it has not been possible so far to capture it," Air France said.
The plan, added airport officials, is to get close enough to tranquilise the animal with a hypodermic needle.
They picked the off-peak early afternoon for the operation, thus avoiding any impact on scheduled flights.
Since the dog got away there have been several search parties launched, including at night and in the presence of the owner, whose hotel costs at Charles-de-Gaulle are being covered by Air France.

Meet Ajahn Siripanyo, The Monk Who Gave Up His Father's $5 Billion Empire
HiIndia Newsdesk
Kuala Lumpur:
Robin Sharma, in his bestseller "The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari", wrote about a successful lawyer, Julian Mantle, who sold his worldly possessions to embrace a spiritual journey. While Mantle's story was fictional, Thai-Malaysian monk Ven Ajahn Siripanyo denounced a fortune worth billions in real life for spiritual servitude.
The only son of Malaysian billionaire Ananda Krishnan, Ven Ajahn Siripanyo gave up the world of riches and spoils to become a Buddhist monk. Mr Krishnan, also known as AK, is Malaysia's third richest man and is worth more than US$5 billion (Rs 40,000 crore approx), according to a report by South China Morning Post. His business empire spans across telecom, satellites, media, oil, gas, and real estate industries. The billionaire also owns Aircel, the phone company that once sponsored the renowned IPL team Chennai Super Kings, led by cricket legend MS Dhoni. Despite being groomed from an early age to inherit Mr Krishnan's substantial fortune, Ajahn Siripanyo chose to detach himself from worldly possessions at the age of 18, a decision his father respects. Mr Krishnan is reportedly a devout Buddhist himself, who engages in several philanthropist and charitable endeavours.

Black Friday 2024: Why Sales Are Held On This Day?
Black Friday 2024: Black Friday is observed annually on the Friday following Thanksgiving Day, which falls on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. This day marks the unofficial start of the Christmas shopping season, featuring significant discounts and promotions offered by retailers. Known as one of the busiest shopping days of the year, Black Friday 2024 will take place on November 29. The term "Black Friday" originally referred to the point when retailers transitioned from operating at a loss ("in the red") to turning a profit ("in the black"). Over the years, it has evolved into a global shopping phenomenon, characterized by massive crowds, extended store hours, and widespread sales both in stores and online. Although rooted in U.S. tradition, Black Friday has gained worldwide popularity.
Why Do Black Friday Sales Exist?
* Black Friday sales serve as the starting point for the critical holiday shopping season, a period during which retailers expect to generate a
significant portion of their annual revenue. Here's why retailers prioritize Black Friday:
* Stimulating Early Holiday Spending: By offering substantial discounts, retailers encourage customers to
shop early, boosting sales volume and driving demand.
* Clearing Inventory: Retailers often use Black Friday to clear out older or surplus stock, making room for new merchandise ahead of the holidays.
* Intense Competition: The competitive nature of Black Friday drives stores to outdo one another with attractive deals, fostering consumer interest.
* Media Coverage: Black Friday sales garner extensive publicity, raising brand awareness and drawing in more customers.
On this day, many stores open early, and shoppers, eager to secure the best deals, often arrive hours before opening, with some even camping outside malls. The day has become synonymous with finding bargains and saving money on Christmas gifts, making it a pivotal moment in the retail calendar.

Cancer Cure Through Diet? What Navjot Sidhu Missed
Had cancer cure been possible with diet and untested therapies, we would not have seen so many women patients, with their age profile becoming younger. In this country, where there is already scepticism about and deep distrust of scientific systems, such statements by celebrities do more harm than good.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in India, accounting for 28.2 per cent of all cancers that affect them. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the five-year survival rate is 66.4 per cent, compared to 90.2 per cent in developed countries like the US, largely because of lack of access to early diagnosis and care. Although the number of patients continues to increase because of awareness and reporting, evidence-backed treatments are curing the disease and prolonging lives.
I have cited statistics of breast cancer because that’s what cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu’s wife suffered from and who, he claims, has recovered with alternative therapies like fasting, going off sugar and dairy and having neem and lemon water. Had cancer cure been possible with these therapies, and there was scientific evidence establishing a direct link, then we would not have seen so many women patients, with their age profile becoming younger. That is why in this country, where there is already scepticism about and deep distrust of scientific systems of treatment across cross-sections of society, such statements by celebrities do more harm than good.
Now let me talk about how science has helped people survive cancer. From chemotherapy and immunotherapy to hormonal and targetted therapies, the five-year cancer survival rate has gone up from 20 per cent to now between 70 and 90 per cent, depending on type and severity. The survival rate of children with blood cancers has gone up from 10 per cent to 50 and 90 per cent, depending on their condition. All this has been possible because of 100 years of continuous research, experiments, clinical trials, correction and analysing the efficacy of outcomes over
decades. In 1882, William Halsted performed the first radical mastectomy to treat breast cancer. The first chemotherapy was used in 1943 and radiation therapy in the 1900s. The novel CART-T cell therapy has even caused remission of blood cancers. Between 2016 and 2020, the total investment in cancer research was about US$24.5 billion. Surely this would not have been possible if the results didn’t hold and change people’s lives.
Also, people need to understand certain bare facts. Nobody can be declared clinically-free of breast cancer until they have cleared the five to 10-year threshold.
Next come trials, which are meticulous and thorough. When we do randomised scientific studies, we usually compare two sets of patients at the same stage of cancer. One group is subjected to standard therapies in use while the other group is given standard therapies and something which worked in animal studies. They are then followed up for a minimum of two years and more. If successful, the trials are extended to include human subjects in larger numbers, across geographies and sometimes across different gene pools. A successful trial is then observed again before a drug protocol is even suggested, with intervention at each stage guided by the body of evidence.
A lot of factors come into play when you are experimenting with a cancer cell sample in a petri dish. Even if results hold in animal studies, they often do not hold with the same efficacy in human trials. So we cannot undo the success rate of science or substitute them with diet therapies, none of which has gone through large randomised trials. Small studies have been done and continue to be done in very small groups of people but the results have been pyrrhic and not warranted a drastic change in therapy protocol.
Since diet has a metabolic response, it may have some effect on cancer cells but won’t be a cure. You need scientific treatments to target cancer cells. That’s why diet can only be a complementary therapy, based on the fact that eating clean not only enhances well-being, like reducing obesity and diabetes, but in cancer patients, helping them in convalescence. Chemotherapy continues to have side effects and intermittent fasting or calorie deficit cannot be recommended for all patients, especially those who have cancers of the oesophagus, gall bladder and stomach, and are generally emaciated. If you ask them to fast, they will collapse and their muscles waste away.
Cancer science is defined and works on a casespecific basis. A 40 year-old patient with metastatic cancer will have different therapy needs than their 70-year-old counterpart with other risk factors. The success of a singular case cannot be generalised for everybody else.
Oncologists are not enemies of emerging therapy prospects, provided the studies are conducted in an ethical manner, the results are saved over years and decades, not just five months, there is recordkeeping by researchers and doctors (patients do not come forward to report progress and families are angry at doctors when they die) and the conclusions are published in peer-reviewed journals to make sure results aren’t fabricated.
There’s also ongoing research on supportive therapies. I attended a US breast cancer conference in San Antonio, Texas last year, where a large-scale study was presented on exercise reducing relapse by 30 per cent. It is now being figured out how to grade endurance among survivors. Currently, no diet study measures up.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday said the state government will not accept the Rs 100 crore donation announced by Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani for the Young India Skill University being set up in the state.
The decision was taken since Adani's announcement gave rise to "unnecessary discussions" that it may appear favouring the state government or the CM, if the donation was accepted, he said while addressing a press conference.

China: "No One Will Win Trade War" as Trump Plans Tariffs
Beijing: China warned Tuesday that "no one will win a trade war" after US President-elect Donald Trump vowed to impose sweeping tariffs on goods from China and elsewhere in response to illegal drug trade and immigration.
"China believes that China-US economic and trade cooperation is mutually beneficial in nature," Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for China's embassy in the United States, said in an email to AFP.
Maharashtra Suspense
Eknath Shinde Resigns as BJP Backs Fadnavis
Mumbai: The suspense over who will become Maharashtra Chief Minister after the Mahayuti's mammoth victory in the state polls has entered its third day. The tenure of the 14th state Assembly ends today and incumbent Eknath Shinde has resigned as Chief Minister. But the BJP-led alliance is yet to take a final call on who will get the top post. BJP leaders want former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to become the Chief Minister, while Shiv Sena MLAs are rooting for Mr Shinde to continue. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP, it is learnt, has decided to back Mr Fadnavis. The BJP has 132 MLAs, the Sena has 57 and the NCP 41. This means that the BJP needs only one of its two allies to reach the magic figure of 145 in the 288-member Assembly. This leaves Mr Shinde with few
bargaining chips for the Chief Minister post. As the BJP leadership brainstorms on who will get the big post, a group of Sena leaders had planned to gather outside the Chief Minister's official bungalow, Varsha, apparently as a show of strength for Eknath Shinde. But the Sena chief intervened and asked them not to.

US Charges Against Adani May Drop Under Trump: Lawyer
New York: There remains a possibility that the $265 million bribery case against billionaire Gautam Adani can be withdrawn if the charges against him are deemed “unworthy or defective” after Donald Trump takes over as the US President, a prominent IndianAmerican attorney has said.
Attorney Ravi Batra told PTI that while every new president has a new team, President-elect Trump as the 47th President of the US, who is forgoing
FBI checks for his Cabinet, will "neuter any prosecution that's not based in good faith, but is what he has powerfully termed: lawfare”.
“Essentially, that means the law is being applied selectively to target one's opponents, which naturally denies the target of “equal protection of the law” guaranteed by our Federal constitution,”
Mr Batra said. He added that “that is an issue Gautam Adani can raise with his government, and request them to raise bilaterally” with the incoming administration of Trump, who will be sworn in as the 47th US President on January 20, 2025.
"If the criminal or civil charges are deemed unworthy or defective, President Trump's new Justice Department and SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) can withdraw the criminal and civil cases,” Mr Batra said.
once again in the state. As a grand alliance, we contested the election together and are still together today," he said on X. "Out of love for me, some people have appealed to everyone to gather together and come to Mumbai. I am deeply grateful for your love. But I appeal that no one should come together in my support in such a manner."

Trump excludes India from initial tariff plans; targets China, Mexico and Canada
HiIndia Newsdesk
US President-elect Donald Trump, set to take office on January 20, has outlined plans to impose significant tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada in a bid to bring manufacturing jobs back to the US and leverage trade negotiations. Trump announced that upon taking office, he will sign an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on all goods from Mexico and Canada, alongside an additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports until China addresses the smuggling of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid.
According to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Mexico, China, and Canada are the most vulnerable US trading partners to these tariff changes, with India ranking 8th on the list of
Trump Plans 25% Tariff on Mexico, Canada, and 10% on China Over Fentanyl
countries impacted by potential policy shifts. Trump highlighted the fentanyl issue, stating that despite multiple discussions with China, the country has failed to curb the smuggling of the drug, which he says largely enters the US via Mexico. He emphasized that tariffs on China would increase until this issue is
resolved.
In addition, Trump reiterated his stance on Mexico and Canada, stressing that tariffs would remain in place until the flow of drugs, particularly fentanyl, and illegal immigration are stopped. This move is seen as part of Trump’s broader approach to trade and border control policies.
While India is not currently targeted by Trump’s tariff plans, it remains a subject of concern. During his campaign, Trump labeled India a “trade abuser” and hinted at the possibility of imposing higher tariffs on Indian exports, which could further strain US-India trade relations. In 2019, India lost its dutyfree access under the US Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), affecting approximately $5.7 billion in exports.

Black Friday shoppers should be wary of deals to avoid being ripped off, retail experts have warned.
Nine out of 10 Black Friday offers are cheaper or the same price at other times of the year, according to research by consumer group Which?.
While Sarah Johnson, director of merchandise consultancy Flourish Retail, told the BBC some brands may inflate prices ahead of sales to make discounts look bigger.
Black Friday originally marked the day after Thanksgiving in the US but in recent years the sales have extended into the weeks before and after, with Cyber Monday driving millions in online sales.
Shoppers spent an estimated £13.3bn during the Black Friday sales in 2023, according to Which?.
Ms Johnson said: "It used to be that you had to establish a price for 28 days before it could be changed, but this is

Macy's employee hid more than $130m in delivery expenses
US department store Macy's has said a rogue staffer concealed more than $130m (£103m) in company costs over roughly three years, causing it to delay the release of its latest accounts.
Macy's, also the owner of Bloomingdales and the make-up chain Bluemercury, said it was postponing its quarterly sales
update as it investigates the incident. The person was responsible for tracking expenses related to small package deliveries, the retailer said. It added that it believed the person had acted alone. Macy's also said the impact was limited and would not affect its payments to other firms.
Macy's said it had discovered an issue related to delivery expenses earlier this month as it started to prepare its financial update.
An investigation and forensic analysis subsequently identified that a "single employee with responsibility for small package delivery expense accounting intentionally made erroneous accounting accrual entries" starting around the end of 2021, Macy's said.

Rs 7 lakh crore
Adani Investor Losses Since Hindenburg Report Jan 2023
Investors have suffered a huge loss of Rs 7,00,000 crore ($ 82.9 billion) in ten Adani group companies after the US based short seller Hindenburg Research came out with a report alleging the group of “brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud scheme over the course of decades” in January 2023 and culminating in the US court indictment of Rs 2,000 crore bribery charge to secure energy contracts earlier this week. According to exchange data, the market capitalisation, or total market value, of ten listed companies plunged from Rs 19.24 lakh crore ($ 227.78 billion) on January 23, 2023 – a day before the Hindenburg report came out – to Rs 12.24 lakh crore ($ 144.87 billion) on November 21 when the US court filings on bribery charges surfaced. On November 21, investors wealth plummeted by 2.22 lakh crore as investors dumped Adani stocks, leading to a loss of up to 23 per cent in these stocks, following the development in the US court.
India's Forex Reserves Hit 4-Month Low After Record Drop
selling the £1,000-a-bottle perfume in Russia. The BBC can now exclusively show the undercover video, which has previously only been shared in court.
Mr Crisp was arrested in 2023 by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) - the UK government agency responsible for sanctions enforcement - but the investigation was dropped earlier this year. This is despite the discovery of evidence that he tried to conceal more than £1.7m of illegal sales.
Mr Crisp, from Surrey, denies knowingly breaching sanctions or concealing trades with Russia.
There has not been a single UK criminal conviction for violating trade sanctions on Russia, the BBC understands, since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine almost three years ago.
India’s foreign exchange (forex) reserves logged their sharpest weekly fall on record to a more-than-four-month low last week, as the dollar strengthened following the US election verdict, and the central bank sold from its reserves to limit the rupee’s decline.
The reserves fell by $17.8 billion in the week of Nov 15 — the most since available data starting 1998 — to $657.89 billion, data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) showed on Friday. Forex reserves have fallen by a total of nearly $30 billion in the last six weeks and are down by $47 billion from the record high of $704.89 billion hit in late September.

Amid Divorce Rumors, Abhishek Thanks Aishwarya
Since July, rumours that Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai have split have been making rounds on the internet. Though neither of them have commented on this, both have tried to put the rumours at rest. Aishwarya flaunted her wedding ring at the L’Oréal Fashion show at Paris Fashion Week in September, which made people think otherwise.
Now, Abhishek has expressed gratitude towards his wife for staying at home with their 13-year-old daughter, Aaradhya. In an interview with The Hindu, Abhishek also acknowledged the sacrifices his mother, Jaya Bachchan, made when he was born. “My mother stopped acting when I was born because she wanted to spend time with the children. We never felt the void of dad not being around. I think at the end of the day after work, you come home at night.” “In my household, I’m lucky I get to go out and make movies but I know that Aishwarya is at home with Aaradhya and I thank her immensely for that but I don’t think the kids look at it that way. They don’t look at you as a third person, they look at you as the first person,” he said.
Ranbir Kapoor
on Violence Glorification in Animal
anbir Kapoor's 2023 film Animal had a phenomenal box office performance, earning an estimated Rs 917 crore against a Rs 100 crore budget. But the film was heavily criticised for its themes and depiction of violence.
The Sandeep Reddy Vanga film is filled with gore and violence, accompanied with themes of misogyny, male chauvinism, and patriarchy that critics feared could have a negative impact on the audience.
Kapoor addressed this issue during the ongoing International Film Festval of India (IFFI) held in Goa, when an audience
member shared his opinion about the glorification of violence in his films Animal and Sanju.
As an actor I agree with ur opinion that we should make movies which bring a positive change to society, but having said that at the end of the day, I am an actor and it is very important to me that I dabble in different characters & different genres of films The man explained how films like these could give out a bad message to the society, and praised the old films and songs which had good stories, to which Kapoor responded, “I completely agree with your opinion. As an actor, it is our responsibility to bring movies which bring a positive change to the society. Having said that, I'm an actor. It’s very important that I also dabble in different genres and different characters and play varied roles. But what you are saying is absolutely correct. We have to be more responsible towards the kind of films we make." Sanju (2018), a biopic of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt received a lot of criticism, mainly for its misleading narrative. Dutt was arrested under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) for illegal possession of weapons which were allegedly connected to the 1993 Bombay bombings. Though Kapoor's performance was lauded, the filmmakers were accused of clearing Dutt's criminal image and glorifying his actions.
Saira Banu on Divorce with AR Rahman
Days after announcing the separation from her husband, music composer
A.R. Rahman, Saira Banu broke the silence and revealed why she took a break from marriage.
Amid the recent criticisms and speculations, Banu also said AR is a "gem of a person, the best man in the world."
"This is Saira Rahman here. I'm currently in Bombay. I've been physically unwell for the last couple of months. So that's the reason I just wanted to take a break from AR, but I would request the entire YouTube YouTubers, the Tamil Media, please please do not say anything bad against him. He's a gem of a person, the best man in the world."
She added that it was just because of health issues that she had to leave Chennai. "I knew if I'm not in Chennai, you people will wonder where Sarah is. And I've come here to Bombay. I'm going ahead with my treatment, and this wouldn't have been possible with AR's busy schedule in Chennai, and I didn't want to disturb anybody, neither my children nor him." He is an amazing human being...He is not linked with me, I trust him with my life. That's how much I love him, and that's how much he does. So I kindly request you all to stop the false allegations against him."
She also said that she would return to Chennai after completing her treatment. After nearly three decades of marriage, AR Rahman and Banu announced their separation last week. A joint statement was issued by Banu's lawyer, Vandana Shah. They tied the knot in 1995 and have three children--Khatija, Raheema and Ameen. Amid false accusations, AR has issued a legal notice to those spreading false information, warning dire consequences if defamatory content is not removed promptly.
Rakesh Roshan on Karan Arjun Re-release
Rakesh Roshan is gearing up for the rerelease of his hit 1995 directorial Karan Arjun. Speaking with Hindustan Times, Rakesh revealed he is nervous to see how the new generation will respond to the classic, that will celebrate its 30th anniversary in January.
“The re-release is an experiment for me as a filmmaker. I’m nervous, because I’m presenting my film to a new generation, and curious to know what the reactions will be because the fate of the re-release will only help me gauge the mindset of the current generation of cine-goers.”
When asked about his casting choice in selecting big names like Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, Rakesh said, “I knew Shah Rukh was a hardworking and dedicated actor, having worked with him on King Uncle. I had him in mind while writing Arjun.”
Rakesh said that Salman's characteristics were synonymous to Karan's. “He has very deep, expressive eyes. It was something the character of Karan needed, being a man of few words.” Karan Arjun had a star studded cast. Alongside the two Khan's, Kajol, Mamta Kulkarni, Rakhee Gulzar, and Amrish Puri also starred in the film. “I made sure the characters were balanced equally, from their songs to action scenes. I weaved my script from an actor’s perspective so that no one on my cast would have objections,” Rakesh said.
"Audience Prefers Star Kids"
Kriti Sanon on Nepotism
Kriti Sanon said, "If you keep working hard and if you are at it, nothing can stop you"
Kriti Sanon attended the 55th International Film Festival Of India (IFFI) for her maiden production Do Patti, which was released on the streaming giant Netflix. At the event, Kriti talked about Bollywood's most favourite word nepotism. Kriti, who won a National Award last year for her performance in Mimi, said the audience is more interested in star kids than the industry. The industry big wigs want to make movies with star kids to cater to audience's choices, asserted Kriti at the press conference.
Talking about her own journey from being an outsider to a sough-after actor, Kriti said, "The industry has given me a very warm welcome since the time I have come. Of course, when you don't belong to a film background, it takes time for you to get there. It takes time for you to get those opportunities you crave for. It takes time for you to even get those magazine covers. So everything is a bit of a struggle. But after 2-3 films, if you keep working hard and if you are at it, nothing can stop you." Reflecting upon the trinity comprising industry, star kids and the audience, Kriti opined, "I feel the industry is not so much responsible for nepotism. It's also the media and the audience. The audiences want to watch what the media is putting about certain star kids. Because the audience is interested in them, the industry feels that since the audience is interested let's make a movie with them. So I think it's a circle. But I feel if you are talented, you will get there. If you're not talented, and if the connect is not there with the audiences you will not get there."
Kriti Sanon made her debut opposite Tiger Shroff in Heropanti. The actor is known for films like Bareilly Ki Barfi, Luka Chuppi, Panipat, Pati Patni Aur Woh, Adipurush, Ganapath, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya. She debuted as a producer with Do Patti featuring herself and Kajol in lead roles.

She graced a media event on Sunday where she gave the audience and her fans a close look at her philanthropic side. At the event, she revealed that all her earnings from the show went to a village in Bihar through UNICEF. As a human being, you do your best. My entire acting fee actually goes to a village through UNICEF in Bihar. Everything
that I do, all my earnings go to charity. I work diligently with them." She also revealed her plans for the welfare of women in India and culture in the future. "Beyond that also, I've been trying to create a show about women's voices, and another one representing Indian culture. However, I have often received feedback that there's not enough audience to watch these shows. I am ready to show India its culture, the power of women, but the audiences have to be ready. It's just not about my time, it's about production and the cost as well," Shalini said. "Also, I get inspiration from women and the community. I always put up posts about women's issues, support organisations that work towards their upliftment.

African Team Registers Embarrassing 'Lowest Ever' Record In T20Is
Ivory Coast set a new record for the lowest total ever recorded in a T20 international when they were bowled out for just seven by Nigeria in Lagos on Sunday. It was three runs fewer than the previous record of 10, set by the Isle of Man when they
lost to Spain in 2023 and equalled by Mongolia against Singapore in September. Nigeria won the toss and elected to bat first in the T20 World Cup sub-regional Africa qualifier, racking up an imposing 271-4 in their 20 overs. Selim Salau smashed 112 from 53 balls before retiring while Isaac Okpe's 65 not out from 23 balls included six sixes and three fours. Ivory Coast opener Ouattara Mohamed made four before being the first man out. Little did he know that he would be Ivory Coast's top-scorer as the innings folded without even a boundary in just 7.3 overs. Only Mimi Alex, wicketkeeper Maiga Ibrahim and Dje Claude troubled the scorers with a single each.

Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer fetch record bids
coach Gautam Gambhir has reportedly flown back home. The development comes unexpectedly since there wasn't any plan for Gambhir or any other member of the team to head back home. Gambhir reportedly informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of a 'personal reason' that required him to fly back. It isn't yet known exactly when the India coach would return but he is likely to reunite the team before the second Test in Adelaide.
A report in Indian Express suggested that Gambhir has spoken to the BCCI about his travel plans.
Resurrected generational talent Rishabh Pant pipped Shreyas Iyer to become the costliest buy in IPL's history with a Rs 27 crore winning bid from Lucknow Super Giants, while Venkatesh Iyer was the surprise show-stopper as teams expectedly broke the bank for marquee Indian players at the mega auction here on Sunday. Shreyas, who captained the Kolkata Knight Riders to the title earlier this year, and Delhi Capitals' icon Pant, reaped the benefits of making themselves available at the auction following differences with their respective teams.

Parliament Adjourned Amid Modi-Adani Row
Proceedings in both houses of the Parliament have been adjourned till Wednesday after the opposition raised slogans demanding discussion on various issues including the Adani bribery case in the US, violence in Manipur and Sambhal and Wayanad landslide assistance. On Tuesday, the Parliament will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the adoption of Indian Constitution.
The winter session of Parliament began on Monday by offering tributes to departed MPs. Delhi GRAP 4 Curbs Stay, SC Cites Air Pollution Gaps
New Delhi: Tough restrictions on vehicular movement and construction activities in Delhi will stay for now, the Supreme Court ruled today. The national capital, battling bad air days for the past few weeks, is currently under the fourth stage of curbs under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). GRAP 4 was imposed after the Air Quality Index crossed the 450 mark last week and entered the 'severe +' category.
The court, which earlier said GRAP 4 curbs won't be eased without its approval, said it would take a call on this question in the next hearing on Thursday. Delhi's Air Quality Index is now a tad better than last week and has dropped to the 'very poor' band.
The court, however, said the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) can take a call on whether to resume physical classes in schools in Delhi and other cities in the National Capital Region. The bench of Justice AS Oka and Justice AG Masih cracked the whip on Delhi Police, warning the city police commissioner of prosecution for poor implementation of curbs to tackle the air pollution.
Telangana Rejects Rs.100 Cr Adani Donation Over US Indictment
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy Monday said his government has declined a Rs 100 crore donation pledged by the Adani Foundation to the Young India Skills University. The CM said this is keeping in mind the indictment of Gautam Adani in the United States over allegations of bribing Indian government officials for securing “lucrative solar energy supply contracts”.
– have approved of the arrangement for the next government, a report in Indian Express said quoting sources. The Shinde Sena will get 12 ministers and the NCP is likely to get 10 berths, sources said.

NDA Leads Maharashtra, INDIA Gains Jharkhand
New Delhi: Counting of votes in the Maharashtra and Jharkhand assembly elections, and bypolls in several states has begun. In early leads, NDA seems set for a landslide win while INDIA has surged ahead in Jharkhand. Nearly three hours into the counting of votes for Maharashtra and Jharkhand assembly elections, NDA seems set for a landslide win in Maharashtra, while
INDIA appears to have pulled off a stunner in Jharkhand.
Most exit polls predicted a Mahayuti win in Maharashtra. Three exit polls have, however, forecast neither the Mahayuti nor the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) would secure a decisive majority to form government. But the numbers so far show a clear mandate for the NDA.
In Mahayuti, the BJP contested the
Who Will Be Maharashtra CM? Fadnavis Speaks
Speaking to reporters Saturday evening, the BJP's Devendra Fadnavis - a twotime holder of that post (even if the second was a matter of days only) - offered some insight into that vexed query, declaring a decision had already been taken. Alliance leaders, he said, had been instructed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah that the Chief Minister will be selected after a consultation between all.
"There will be no dispute about who will be the Chief Minister... it was decided from day one that, after the election, the leaders of the three parties will sit together and decide this," he stressed.
"The decision will be acceptable to everyone, there is no dispute on this," he said, aware, no doubt, that supporters of chief ministerial hopefuls have already begun jockeying for their favourites.
Mr Fadnavis' toe-the-party line response echoed that made by Mr Shinde, the outgoing Chief Minister, who was installed in the top post after leading the 2022 rebellion in the Shiv Sena. Mr Shinde led over 40 Sena MLAs into the BJP's fold in 2022, a move that forced undivided Sena boss Uddhav Thackeray to step down as Chief Minister and his MVA government to fall.

Two seats were contested by Samajwadi Party and two seats by smaller MVA allies.
This was the first election after splits in the NCP and the Shiv Sena. In the 2019 elections, BJP won 105 seats, the undivided Shiv Sena 56, undivided NCP 54, Congress 44, independents 13 and others 16 seats. The results today will have huge implications for all the parties, particularly NCP and Shiv Sena.
Canada on Thursday rejected local media reports suggesting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in the know of the plot to kill Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in June 2023.
“The government of Canada has not stated, nor is it aware of evidence, linking Prime Minister Modi, (external affairs) minister (S.) Jaishankar, or NSA (Ajit) Doval to the serious criminal activity within Canada. Any suggestion to the contrary is both speculative and inaccurate,” Canada’s national security and intelligence adviser Nathalie G. Drouin said in a statement.
Jaiswal, Rahul Shine, Australia Stumbles
China Targets US Cyber Systems for Crisis Edge: Official
researchers at the Cyberwarcon security conference in Arlington, Virginia. On Thursday, US Senator Mark Warner told the Washington Post that a suspected China-linked hack on US telecommunications firms was "the worst telecom hack in our nation's history - by far."
That cyberespionage operation, dubbed "Salt Typhoon," has included stolen call records data, the compromise of communications of top officials of both major US presidential campaigns before the Nov. 5 election, and telecommunications information related to US law enforcement requests, the FBI said in a recent statement.
India ended Day 2 firmly on top, not losing a single wicket in the final two sessions in the first Test of the BorderGavaskar Trophy at Perth. Yashasvi Jaiswal stayed unbeaten on 90, bringing up his first century on Australian soil. KL Rahul was impressive too, notching up his own fifty (62*). The duo extended India's lead to 218 runs at the end of Day 2, with all 10 wickets still in hand. Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah completed a five-wicket haul, and Harshit Rana took three, as India bundled out Australia for 104. This helped India take a 46-run lead after the first innings.

Canada Clears Modi in Nijjar Case
I have all chargesheet reports filed in US against Adani... will study it and act on it
Canada Retracts After India's Strong Rebuttal
The Canadian government, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, denied a media report linking top Indian leaders to criminal activities in Canada, calling it "speculative and inaccurate."National Security and Intelligence Advisor Nathalie G. Drouin clarified that Canada is "not aware" of any evidence supporting claims made by The Globe and Mail, which cited unnamed officials alleging Indian leaders were aware of a plot to kill Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was killed in Vancouver last year. Drouin's statement emphasized that Canada had not accused Prime Minister Modi, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, or NSA Ajit Doval of involvement. India swiftly dismissed the report as a "smear campaign," with External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal branding the claims "ludicrous." The controversy follows tensions between the two nations after Nijjar's killing, with India repeatedly rejecting accusations of its involvement.

US Arrest Warrant for Adani: Bigger Blow Than Hindenburg Report
The Adani Group faces a massive crisis after U.S. prosecutors charged chairman Gautam Adani and associates with bribery. The market value of its companies plunged by $30 billion on Thursday, with Gautam Adani’s net worth dropping $12 billion to $57 billion. Arrest warrants have been issued for Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, and former Adani Green executive Vneet Jaain.
The fallout has been swift. Kenya canceled deals to award the group contracts for power plants and management of its main airport. Analysts estimate the group may have lost up to $18 billion in bond values on the same day. In response, the Adani Group denied all allegations, calling them “baseless” and reiterating that it is a “law-abiding organisation fully compliant with all laws.” The company dismissed the accusations as lacking merit. This development poses a significant challenge for the conglomerate, adding to previous controversies, including scrutiny following the Hindenburg Report.
Supreme Court orders monitoring Delhi’s entry points to check truck ban
New Delhi: GRAP-IV, or the fourth stage of anti-pollution measures in effect for Delhi and the National Capital Region, will remain in force for the next 72 hours, the Supreme Court said Friday, with the AQI in the city and surrounding areas at 371, or still in the 'very poor' category, this morning. The court also underlined its intention to retain control of dropping down a level, or even two, in the GRAP,
or Graded Response Action Plan, hierarchy; Justice Abhay S Oka said, "What we are suggesting is this... (next) Monday we will examine compliance (of its orders by the Delhi government)... and then we will consider whether to bring it down from GRAP-IV to GRAP-II." Further, today the court also proposed the government post police at the 113 checkpoints on the city's borders to monitor entry of trucks into the national capital region.
Indian Student in US
Dies
in Birthday Mishap
A 23-year-old student from India died in the US after he accidentally fired his hunting gun and shot himself on his birthday. The incident took place on November 13, when the student, Aryan Reddy, was celebrating his birthday with his friends at his home in Atlanta, Georgia. During the celebration, Reddy reportedly took out his new hunting gun to clean it. However, he ended up accidentally
firing a bullet that hit his chest, officials said. On hearing the gunshot, Reddy's friends - who were in another room - rushed to his room and found their friend in a pool of blood, officials said. They immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he was declared dead. Reddy was a second-year student at Kansas State University, Atlanta, studying Master of Science. He was from Telangana's Bhuvanagiri district but his family currently lives in the Uppal district.
Kanwal Sibal: US Adani Report Violates Sovereignty
Delhi: Kanwal Sibal, former Foreign Secretary of India, has denounced a US government department's report on the Adani Group, calling it a "violation of sovereignty". Mr Sibal said that the US action reflects "sheer high-handedness" and an "abusive use of US power."
Mr Sibal called on the US to share its findings with Indian authorities, adding that any investigation conducted on Indian soil by American prosecutors would inherently violate Indian law.
Bumrah Shines in India's Bowling Comeback
Skipper Jasprit Bumrah made amends for his debatable toss call to bat first with a mesmerising opening spell that left Australia scurrying for cover at 67 for 7 and helped India make an emphatic comeback after a flop show with the willow on the opening day of the first Test in Perth. The match, which was billed as a battle between two out of form batting units, lived up to the prediction at least on the first day. As many as 17 wickets fell, which is the first time in seven decades for a Test match on Australian soil.
The stand-in India skipper, much to everyone's surprise, opted to bat on a track with a liberal grass cover which generated appreciable seam movement and midriff high bounce. But neither the youngsters nor the seasoned ones in the Indian line-up were up to the task. It was debutant Nitish Reddy's gutsy 41 and Rishabh Pant's 37, including an unbelievable sixer, that got India to 150 in 49.4 overs with Josh Hazlewood (4/29), Mitchell Starc (2/14 in 11 overs), Pat Cummins (2/67 in 15.4 overs) and Mitchell Marsh (2/12 in 5 overs) sharing the spoils.

Florida Man Charged with Attempting to Bomb NY Stock Exchange
NEW YORK, NY- A Florida man, Harun Abdul-Malik Yener, 30, has been arrested and charged with attempting to bomb the New York Stock Exchange to "reboot" the U.S. government, according to the FBI. Yener, of Coral Springs, faces charges of attempting to use an explosive device to destroy a building used in interstate commerce. The FBI began investigating Yener in February after discovering bomb-making materials in his storage unit, including schematics, timers, and electronics. Court documents revealed Yener had been researching bombmaking techniques online since 2017.
In conversations with undercover agents, he outlined plans to target the Stock Exchange, describing the destruction as akin to "a small nuke going off." Yener allegedly planned the attack for the week before Thanksgiving, rewiring two-way radios as remote detonators
Multi-State Deadly E. Coli Outbreak Linked to Recalled Organic Carrots
NEW JERSEY- Public health officials are investigating a nationwide E. coli outbreak tied to recalled organic carrots, which has sickened at least 39 people, including two in New Jersey. Grimmway Farms recalled various sizes and brands of organic whole and baby carrots on November 16, citing contamination with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. Affected products were sold at retailers such as Target, Trader Joe’s, Walmart, Wegmans, and Whole Foods.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed one death
in California and 15 hospitalizations. The FDA warns consumers to check their refrigerators and freezers for affected carrots. Brands include 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Trader Joe's, Wegmans, and others. Consumers are urged to discard or return recalled carrots and clean surfaces and utensils exposed to them. Symptoms of E. coli infection include high fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration. Those experiencing symptoms should seek medical attention.
The CDC notes the true number of cases is likely higher, as confirmation takes several weeks. Illnesses have been reported across 18 states, including Massachusetts, Michigan, Texas, and California.
Consumers should remain vigilant, ensuring any potentially contaminated products are disposed of to prevent further spread of the outbreak.

The incident occurred around 4:40 a.m. at an apartment building near 161st Street and Broadway in Washington Heights. According to authorities, a burglar gained access to the apartment by climbing a fire escape and opening a window, subsequently allowing two accomplices inside. NYC Students Identified as Homeless Last School Year: Study
NEW YORK, NY- A study by Advocates for Children of New York reveals that at least 146,000 students in grades K-12 were homeless during the 2022-2023 school year, marking a 23% increase from the previous year. This equates to one in eight children citywide, with the highest numbers in central Brooklyn, upper Manhattan, and the southwest Bronx.
Of these students, 54% lived “doubledup” in temporary housing, while 41% stayed in city shelters. The report highlights severe challenges for these students, including high chronic absenteeism—67% among those in
shelters—and a high school dropout rate three times that of their peers in permanent housing.
"This is unconscionable," said Jennifer Pringle, director of the Learners in Temporary Housing Project at Advocates for Children. Despite efforts by NYC Public Schools, including transportation, counseling, and essential supplies, significant gaps remain.
The study urges state and city governments to increase funding for schools with homeless students, prioritize shelter placements near schools, eliminate 60-day shelter stay limits, and address transportation delays. In response, Mayor Eric Adams announced a relaxation of 60-day shelter stay limits for families with young children. However, Kim Sweet, the organization’s executive director, stressed that more systemic changes are needed.
"School can break the cycle of homelessness, but many children, especially those in shelters, are being left behind," Sweet said.

According to Department of Justice (DOJ) new release: According to evidence presented at trial, between Dec. 12, 2021, and Jan. 19, 2022, Harshkumar Ramanlal Patel, 29, also known as Dirty Harry and Harry Patel, and Steve Anthony Shand, 50, conspired to smuggle dozens of migrants across the border of Canada and into the United States. Patel and Shand were part of a large-scale humansmuggling operation that brought Indian nationals to Canada on student visas and then smuggled them into the United States. The defendants’ roles in the smuggling operation included the coordination and transportation of people from Manitoba, Canada, into the United States. Specifically, Patel worked with co-conspirators in Canada to organize the logistics of smuggling trips, while Shand was instructed when and where to pick up migrants just south of the Canadian border in the United States. He then drove them to Chicago. They were paid for their roles in the conspiracy and disregarded the risks posed by the cold weather at the northern border. The family that succumbed to death were -- Jagdish Patel, 39; his wife, Vaishaliben Patel, 37; and their children, Vihangi, 11, and Dharmik, 3. From Masala Turkey to Thanksgiving Aloo Gobhi – how Indians are embracing Thanksgiving
Food often forms the center of any festivity and who knows it better than the Indians. Thanksgiving – an annual national holiday celebrated in the United States and in Canada acknowledging the harvest and bounty of the year gone by is marked as one of the most secular celebrations and enjoyed by not just the locals but amongst immigrants across the country.
Interestingly, while turkey remains central to the celebrations as the grand feast of the day, many Indian families are creating their own unique recipes while preserving their eating habits and restrictions and creating a holistic Thanksgiving table that reflects the American diversity.
A few years ago, when Indian-origin cookbook author and TV personality Padma Lakshmi wrote about her Thanksgiving turkey recipe where she marinated her turkey in buttermilk instead of the traditional milk for brining, it struck a chord with the Indians who have been savoring the salty and sour buttermilk or chaach as a great digestive, health drink for years.
But what also makes Thanksgiving truly universal is the inclusion or introduction of a wholly vegetarian main course on the Thanksgiving dining table.
As Indians are amongst the largest group of vegetarians across the globe and great innovators in the kitchen, it was anyones' guess that over time we would start having our very own desi vegetarian Thanksgiving recipes passed down along the generations as a reminder of embracing American practices while retaining our ethnic cultural practices.
The Shah family based in Naperville suburb of Chicago invites family over for an all- vegetarian Thanksgiving Day dinner and Aarti Shah shares, “I have had my American colleagues ask for my recipes after I carried the leftovers for lunch. From roasted masala gobhi to paneer in cranberry sauce we have been experimenting with the traditional American ingredients and incorporating them within our food preferences and we have come up with a great spread.”
Many others are also embracing the holiday while adding their own spice to it quite literally. In the Ahmed household in New Jersey, turkey is cooked extra slow with some extra spices like garam masala and haldi to make it even more savory for Indian taste buds!
All in all, with its various menu interpretations and cultural nuances a glimpse at the growing Thanksgiving table is a perfect testimony to America’s diversity

New Theory Unveiled on Ancient Egyptian Pyramid Construction by Chicago Researcher
CHICAGO, IL – Rajan Hooda, a researcher at the University of Chicago, has proposed a groundbreaking theory shedding light on the construction of Egypt’s iconic pyramids. After over 50 years of research, Hooda’s findings, detailed in his paper The Theory of the Conjoint Solution and The Shrinking Dual L Notch Ramps, present a revolutionary method for building the pyramids that challenges existing theories.
Hooda suggests the pyramids were constructed layer by layer, akin to a “layer cake,” using an innovative system called the “L Notch Ramp.” This dual-ramp design allowed for the
transportation of massive stones to higher levels while leaving no evidence behind, as the ramps were dismantled after construction. Hooda’s theory counters previous ideas involving impractically large exterior ramps or interior tunnels, which he argues are structurally unfeasible.
The process involved constructing 210 layers of stones, with small sections left incomplete to create a rising ramp. As each layer was finished, the ramp was extended to the next level, enabling a step-by-step approach to the pyramid's construction. Once the pyramid was completed, the ramps were removed starting from the top, explaining the
lack of physical evidence. Hooda also explains the dual functionality of the L Notch Ramp system, with one ramp for lifting stones and another for workers to descend. This resolves logistical challenges in previous theories and offers clarity on how ancient Egyptians achieved this architectural marvel.
Hooda described his work as a “labor of love,” inspired by childhood fascination with the pyramids. His research provides a plausible solution to a mystery that has puzzled historians and engineers for centuries, offering fresh insights into one of history’s greatest engineering achievements.

Jenifer Rajkumar Launches Historic Campaign for NYC Comptroller
NEW YORK, NY- New York’s rich diversity shone brightly Wednesday night as Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar launched her campaign for New York City Comptroller, aiming to become the first South Asian and woman of color to hold the office.
At The Palace in Woodside, Queens, Rajkumar addressed a diverse coalition of supporters from across New York City’s Five Boroughs, celebrating the city’s multicultural spirit.
“No one thought I would be here today,” she declared. “But nothing can stop a determined South Asian woman. This campaign is for every New Yorker who has been underestimated or counted out.”
With a platform focused on public safety, equity, and economic stewardship, Rajkumar outlined bold priorities:
• Tackling Crime: Strategies addressing the city’s most frequent offenders.
• Improving Safety: Enforcing e-bike regulations.
• Closing the Gender Wage Gap: Advocating for pay equity.
• Expanding Education: Bridging high school to college access.
• Affordable Housing: Creating more opportunities for residents.
• Pension Fund Security: Protecting $270 billion for city employees.
A Stanford Law alumna and trailblazer, Rajkumar highlighted her achievements, including the Diwali School Holiday bill and leading the SMOKEOUT Act, which shut down over 1,200 illegal smoke shops. Rajkumar’s call to action resonated: “Are you ready to make this the greatest city in the world? Let’s win this together!” Her campaign reflects hope, determination, and the resilience of a city united for change.

formally adopted a sanctuary city ordinance, prohibiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities. The Los Angeles Unified School District followed suit, barring employees from voluntarily assisting with immigration enforcement. For years, ICE has criticized sanctuary city policies, claiming they obstruct federal efforts, particularly when individuals with criminal records reoffend after being released.
As the Trump administration prepares to take office, the conflict between federal enforcement plans and local sanctuary policies is likely to intensify.
Texas Offers Land for Migrant Detention Facilities Amid Controversy
TEXAS- Texas has proposed allocating 1,400 acres in Starr County near the USMexico border for building detention facilities to support President-elect Donald Trump’s immigration policies. The Texas General Land Office suggests the site could be used for processing and detaining undocumented migrants as part of what Trump’s team describes as the “largest deportation operation” in U.S. history.
Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham expressed strong support, highlighting the land's suitability for development and its potential role in bolstering border security. The offer comes as Texas continues its unilateral border security measures and aligns with Trump’s campaign pledges to mobilize the National Guard and deport millions of undocumented migrants. However, logistical, financial, and legal challenges loom, with opposition from
rights groups and Democratic-led states. California, Arizona, and New Mexico governors have vowed not to support mass deportations, while sanctuary cities like Los Angeles have enacted ordinances barring local cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Incoming Trump administration officials, including "border czar" Tom Homan and adviser Stephen Miller, propose constructing expansive facilities for processing detainees. Facilities could range from temporary "soft-sided" camps to permanent brickand-mortar centers.
Experts note that a divided political landscape may lead to inconsistent immigration enforcement across the U.S. Kathleen Bush-Joseph of the Migration Policy Institute warns of a "patchwork of protections," with red states potentially housing detainees from non-cooperative blue states.
