Clinton barks, Trump says Cruz ‘unstable’ Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton told a colorful story in Reno, Nevada, about a radio ad that she said ran in rural Arkansas while her husband, Bill Clinton, was running for office ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
H
illary Clinton barked like a dog, Donald Trump called Ted Cruz “unstable,” and Jeb Bush brought his big brother George to vouch for him as the US presidential race heated up ahead of the battle of South Carolina. Accusing Republicans of saying things that are not true, the Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton on February 15 told a colorful story in Reno, Nevada, about a radio ad that she said ran in rural Arkansas while her husband, Bill Clinton, was running for office. In the ad, as Clinton remembered, a trained dog barked if something was untrue. “I want to figure out how we can do that with
Republicans,” she said as quoted by CNN. “We need to get that dog and follow them around and every time they say these things like, ‘Oh, the
US to sell 8 F-16 jets to Pak WASHINGTON: The Obama administration has approved the sale of eight F-16 Block-52 aircraft to Pakistan worth $699 million in the face of US lawmakers’ opposition to the deal over Islamabad’s alleged support for terrorist groups The US State Department has approved the sale, the Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said on February 12 as it notified US Congress of the possible sale. “We support the proposed sale of eight F-16s to Pakistan, which we view as the right platform in support of Pakistan’s counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations,” a US government official cited by DefenseNews said. “These operations reduce the ability of militants to use Pakistani
Great Recession was caused by too much regulation,’ arh, arh, arh, arh,” Clinton said, letting out a barking noise that caused the audience to laugh and some people to
mimic her. “I think,” Clinton concluded, “we could cut right through a lot of their claims.” Clinton’s comments came ahead of Saturday’s Democratic caucuses in Nevada and the Republican primary in South Carolina. Republicans hold their caucus in Nevada on February 23, and the Democrats their primary in South Carolina on February 27. On the Republican side, frontrunner Trump called rival Cruz “unstable”, threatening a lawsuit “if he doesn’t take down his false ads and retract his lies” and urged the Republican National Committee (RNC) to “intervene”. He also threatened to renege on his pledge to not run as independent, saying that the Republican
establishment was not holding up its end of a deal. “He’s a very bad guy. He’s a very nasty guy. He’s got no endorsements from any senators who he works with. He’ll never be able to unify anything,” he said of Cruz. Trump acknowledged to CNN that his brawl with Cruz might harm the eventual Republican nominee, whoever it is, “but I think we’ll get over it”. The Cruz campaign responded by saying Trump is lashing out “with name-calling and falsehoods”. Meanwhile, former president George W. Bush, who left office in 2009, came to the aid of his brother taking a clear swipe at Donald Trump during a campaign rally in North Charleston, South Carolina.

U territory as a safe haven for terrorism and a base of support for the insurgency in Afghanistan, which is in the national interests of both Pakistan and the United States, and in the interest of the region more broadly.” The official, DefenseNews said, confirmed that there had been Congressional objections to the sale, but said that contrary to recent “erroneous reports”, “concerns were raised in regard to financing the sale, not the transfer itself.”
S House of Representatives on February 12 overwhelmingly passed a legislation to impose new sanctions on North Korea, sending the bill to President Barack Obama to sign into law. In a 408-2 vote, lawmakers approved legislation that requires the Obama administration to sanction anyone involved with Pyongyang’s nuclear programme, luxury goods, money laundering and human rights abuses. The measure also authorizes $10 million annually over the course of five years for expanding North Korea people’s access to media and providing humanitarian assistance to refugees, according to news website The Hill. The Senate on February 10
unanimously passed the legislation by a vote of 96-0. It now heads to Obama’s desk for his signature. The White House has signally support for the bill. The move comes after the Pyongyang said it launched a
Kwangmyongsong-4 Earth observation satellite and tested what it claimed was a hydrogen bomb. The US has condemned “destabilizing and provocative” actions and vowed to “take all necessary steps to defend ourselves and our allies.”
Economy top concern of US voters now: Gallup poll findings IANS, WASHINGTON
I
n the lead-up to the next US primary in the state of South Carolina, Americans’ main concern is the economy, according to a Gallup poll. The economy and jobs have been a major concern of Americans since 2008 when the country was hit by the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, Xinhua reported. While there have been improvements, the US economy has not fully bounced back. Millions remain unemployed or underemployed, wages remain stagnant, and that issue is on Americans’ minds as they decide which candi-
date to support, said the Gallup poll released on February 11. Seventeen percent of Americans name the economy as the top
problem, up from 13 percent last month and nine percent in December. In those months the government
and terrorism were more prominent among Americans edging out the economy as the No.1 problem, Gallup found. In addition to the economy, at least 10 percent of the US adults mention dysfunctional government, immigration and unemployment as the top problem facing the nation, according to Gallup. Altogether, 39 percent of Americans name an economic issue — including the economy in general, unemployment, the federal budget, wages and others — as the most important problem in February. That is up from less than 30 percent in December and January, according to Gallup. While the economy in general
ranked as a top issue among Republicans, independents and Democrats, partisans differ in what else they perceive to be most important. The Republicans are more likely than Democrats and independents to name the federal budget deficit, immigration and national security. Democrats and independents are more likely than Republicans to name unemployment or jobs. Democrats are also slightly more likely than independents and Republicans to name race relations, education and health care. The economy and unemployment are again prominent in Americans’ minds as important problems, while non-economic issues such as terrorism have faded.

JNU STORM RAGES ON Lawyers rough up journalists twice during the hearing on sedition charges against JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar for shouting “anti-India slogans” during a meeting at the JNU campus; Kumar sent to 14-day judicial custody IANS, NEW DELHI
I
n a week full of drama, patriotism and hooliganism, the storm that started with alleged “anti-India” slogans on the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in the Capital reached Patiala Court where lawyers were seen roughing up journalists as well as JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar who was at the eye of the storm and sent to 14 days judicial custody on February 17. Kumar, arrested on sedition charges, was sent to judicial custody till March 2. Metropolitan Magistrate Lovleen gave the ruling after Delhi Police said it did not need the president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) any more for interrogation. Kumar was also
RSS suppressing voice of Indian youth: Rahul SIVASAGAR (ASSAM): Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi launched another scathing attack on the RSS, saying it was suppressing the voice of Indian youth across the country. Gandhi, who addressed three meetings at Gohpur, Bihpuria and Titabor, took part at a road show in tea-rich Sivasagar district. “The way reporters are being killed across the country is not good. RSS people are being appointed as vice chancellors in universities and reputed institutes,” he said.
assaulted by lawyers when he was entering a Patiala House court room. The Supreme Court said that it will be the personal responsibility of Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi to ensure the safety of Kumar, as it was told that he was severely beaten up while being brought to the court premises earlier in the day.
Kumar, from the CPI-affiliated All India Students Federation (AISF), was arrested on February 12 on charges of raising anti-India slogans during a meeting on Kashmir in the campus. Earlier, a section of lawyers shouting “Bharat Mata ki Jai” slogans attacked journalists and JNU stu-
dents in the Patiala House Court here. The incident took place shortly before Kumar was to be presented before a magistrate. Kumar has denied allegations that he shouted “anti-India slogans” at a meeting at the JNU campus during a meeting to mark the hanging of Afzal Guru, a Kashmiri militant who was hanged for the 2001 terror attack on Indian parliament. Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi said they had registered a First Information Report over the attack on journalists at the Patiala House Court by some lawyers. A large number of journalists earlier staged a protest march demanding action against the guilty lawyers. They walked towards the Supreme Court, and submitted a memorandum to its registrar. The journalists want the lawyers
who thrashed reporters and students in the court to be arrested and action against police personnel who watched the violence but didn’t act. At least four journalists, including Amiya Kumar Kushwaha from IANS, were attacked without any provocation. With the opposition slamming the government over the arrest of the JNU student leader, the BJP said the government was not fighting students but “anti-national” forces. Meanwhile, a protest was held outside the JNU here to demand the arrest of those who shouted antiIndia slogans at the campus. The protesters — said to be from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal — also demanded the shutdown of what they said was the “anti-national” administration of the university.

Indian may become US apex court judge Srinivasan was President Barack Obama’s principal deputy solicitor general, most notably working on the successful fight against the Defense of Marriage Act ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
T
he sudden death of a US Supreme Court justice has catapulted a Chandigarh-born Indian-American judge to the top of succession stakes amid a major political battle during an election year. Srikanth Srinivasan, 48, who became a judge of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit — a traditional launching pad for Supreme Court nominees — in May 2013 after a 97-0 Senate vote was on the short-list of many in the media. Speculation over whom Presi-
dent Barack Obama would nominate to replace Antonin Scalia started hours after the conservative judge’s death Saturday morning in Texas even as top Republicans said the choice should be left to the next president. Obama said on February 13 he would nominate a successor “in due time,” and the Senate will get “plenty of time to give that person a fair hearing and a timely vote” even as Senate Republican leaders and presidential candidates were dead set against the move. Any list of potential replacements begins with Srinivasan, said CNN noting that Obama would

Obama first nominated him to the post in 2012, and the Senate confirmed him, 97-0, in May 2013, including votes in support from Republican presidential contenders Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. Srinivasan’s father hailed from Mela Thiruvenkatanathapuram, a village near Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. His family, including two younger sisters, migrated in the late 1960s to Lawrence, Kansas.

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in the American capital. “These fine public servants bring a depth of experience and tremendous dedication to their important roles. I look forward to working with them,” he said in announcing Trehan’s appointment along with five other individuals. Dedicated to the memory of President John F. Russia rejects Syria’s claim Rebuffs accusations of war crimes; Thirty-four people were killed and dozens injured in February 15 strikes that hit two hospitals and a school sheltering displaced people IANS, MOSCOW
R
ussia on February 16 said it “categorically rejects” accusations of war crimes over the bombing of hospitals in Syria. “Those who make such statements are not capable of backing them up with proof,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Up to 50 people were killed in missile attacks on at least four hospitals and a school in rebel-held areas of northern Syria on February 15. The UN said “intentionally directing attacks” at hospitals and medical units would constitute a war crime. Russia has been accused, by Turkey, among others, of being responsible for the attacks, BBC reported. The February 15 strikes hit two hospitals — including one for mothers and babies — and a school sheltering internally displaced people in Azaz, near the border with Turkey, the UN said. Thirty-four people were killed and dozens were injured. Two hospitals were also struck in Maarat al-Numa, Idlib province, killing at least 12 people and
wounding about 36. One of the hospitals in Maarat al-Numan was supported by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF). It was reportedly struck by four missiles in what MSF said was “direct targeting” over the course of 90 minutes. Peskov said the only proof Russia would accept from the ground
“comes from the Syrian authorities”. He said their evidence “shows the opposite”. The Syrian ambassador to Moscow, Riad Haddad, previously said the US was to blame, a claim the Pentagon dismissed as “patently false”. International humanitarian law bans any attack on patients and medical personnel or indeed any
attack on medical facilities, unless they are used for military purposes. However, even if they are identified as a military objective, such a target must not be attacked if the scale of collateral civilian casualties is likely to be disproportionate to the military gain. The strikes came days after world powers — including Russia
— agreed to work towards a selective truce in Syria, due to begin later this week. The UN envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, met Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem on Tuesday, and planned to meet him again later in the day. They were due to discuss among other things one of the key priorities of the truce — “unhindered humanitarian access to all besieged areas”. There is no word yet on when aid convoys might reach those areas. Earlier, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, in his first comments on Friday’s “cessation of hostilities” plan, said it was doubtful all parties would be putting down their weapons within a week. A Turkish official on Tuesday said Turkey would back a ground operation in Syria but only “with our international allies”. “There is not going to be a unilateral military operation from Turkey to Syria,” an official said in Istanbul. Turkey has been watching with growing alarm the fighting on the Syrian side of its borders — accusing Russian warplanes of violating its airspace and warning against recent Kurdish successes.
Former UN head Boutros Nepal PM to focus on ‘clearing misunderstanding’ with India Boutros-Ghali dead CAIRO: Former United Nations secretary general Boutros Boutros-Ghali died at a hospital here on Tuesday, officials said. He was 93. UN chief Ban Ki-moon hailed him as a “respected statesman” and a “memorable leader who rendered invaluable services to world peace and international order”. Boutros-Ghali was earlier admitted to the hospital with a broken pelvis, BBC reported citing Egypt’s state news agency. His death was confirmed by Rafael Dario Ramirez Carreno, the Venezuelan ambassador to the UN and current president of the UN Security Council. A former Egyptian foreign minister, Boutros-Ghali was the first Arab to serve as UN chief. He took office in 1992 at a time of increasing influence for the world body following its decisive role in the Gulf War, serving a five-year term. “I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of my predecessor, Boutros Boutros-Ghali,” Ban said in a statement. Boutros-Ghali “was a respected statesman” and a “wellknown scholar of international law

N and brought formidable experience and intellectual power to the task of piloting the United Nations through one of the most tumultuous and challenging periods in its history, and guiding the Organization of the Francophonie in subsequent years”. Ban said that as secretary-general, Boutros-Ghali “presided over a dramatic rise in UN peacekeeping”, and when the world “increasingly turned to the UN for solutions to its problems, in the immediate aftermath of the cold war”. “His commitment to the UN — its mission and its staff — was unmistakable, and the mark he has left on the organization is indelible,” Ban said.
epal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, who is all set to embark on an official visit to India, on February 16 said he will aim to clear all “misunderstanding” that crept up in the recent past between Nepal and India and deepen the bilateral ties based on shared prosperity. Providing details to parliament of his upcoming six-day visit, Oli said relations with India will be maintained on the basis of mutual benefit, according to the spirit of the 21st century. Leading a 60-member delegation that would include ministers, government officials, parliamentarians, leaders from various political parties, business leaders and the media, Oli will embark on the visit on February 19. In New Delhi, Oli will meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other government officials on February 20 and 21. He will later visit Mumbai, where he will address the business community. No agreement will be signed in
India against Nepal’s national interest, Oli assured parliament. “My visit is focused on repairing ties not further disturbing it,” he said, adding “We have very deep relations with India but we
“My visit is focused on repairing ties not further disturbing it,” he said. saw some minor problems,” he said. Oli said rather than getting entangled in the issues, “we
should move ahead in a new direction”. “Nepal seeks peace, unity, respect for each other and shared prosperity with India, and I will focus on inviting Indian investment in Nepal,” he said. Nepal-India relations were plunged to a new low late last year when an anti-Constitution Madhesi agitation in Nepal’s southern Terai region led to blockading of the border points — for which Kathmandu held New Delhi responsible — and resulted in scarcity of essentials including food, fuel and medicines.

Goodwill for Modi remains, weak opponents help too Since Modi is a successor of the earlier modernizing PMs, there is still considerable goodwill for him. The support will increase if he cracks down on the Hindutva hardliners AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
S
ince 2014 when Narendra Modi won his famous victory, the only change has been a marginal decline in his popularity. Otherwise, his other advantages and disadvantages have remained more or less the same. As a result, a clear-cut prognosis of the future is not possible for it is difficult to assess how the gains and losses will pan out. For instance, the political benefits which accrue to Modi from having weak opponents are likely to remain unchanged. It was this advan-
tage which helped him to win in the first place. Since then, little has changed so far as the Congress is concerned, for the Bharatiya Janata Party’s main adversary is still tethered to its feudal traditions which are unappealing, if not positively offensive, to a large section of the voters, especially middle class. The main drawback of feudalism is that it is seen as antithetical to modernity. Its emphasis is on an antiindustrial, rural way of life. Much of Modi’s appeal lies in his success in projecting himself as pro-development which translates into a vision of industrial growth. Since the Congress’s scuttling of the Modi government’s amendment of the land law comes in the way of acquiring land for industries, it shows that the party wants India to remain primarily agricultural, which has a connotation of backwardness. It is not only the Congress which panders to the “India lives in its villages” outlook; others like the parties of the Hindi heartland - the Janata Dal (United), the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Samjwadi Party (SP) - also have a similar mindset.
To make matters worse, both the Bihar and U.P. governments have expressed their preference for introducing quotas in the private sector companies which will be a surefire way of destroying their viability as profit-making enterprises. Of the BJP’s two major opponents in north India, where it is more influential than in the east or south, the Congress is feudal and the Hindi heartland parties are casteist. Both seem to prefer the earlier centuries, as the SP’s one-time opposition to English and computers showed. Notwithstanding all these uncertainties, Modi’s plus point remains his progressive outlook with the vision of a modern, industrial India of bullet trains and smart cities. Neither feudalism, nor casteism can dent this appeal, especially for the younger generation of all communities who realize that the concept of the patronizing mai-baap sarkar which favour doles over self-help, entrepreneurial endeavours is passe. Since Modi is a successor of the earlier modernizing prime ministers, there is still considerable goodwill for him. The support for him will increase if only he cracks down on the Hindutva hardliners.

India beat O SL in third T20, win series

ff-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (4/8) spearheaded an incisive bowling attack to help India beat Sri Lanka by nine wickets in their third and final T20 International and win the series 2-1 here on February 14. Chasing a paltry target of 83 runs for a win, India lost just the wicket of right-hander Rohit Sharma (13) in the sixth over when their score was 29. Left-hander Shikhar (46) and Ajinkya Rahane (22) guided India home in 13.5 overs for a win with 37 balls to spare. Ashwin was named Man of the Match as well as the Man of the Series for his impressive form. The series win also enabled India remain No.1 in the T20 rankings. Earlier, Ashwin ran through Sri Lanka's top order to help India bowl out Sri lanka for a mere 82 runs at
West Indies thrash India to lift U-19 WC MIRPUR (BANGLADESH): The West Indies produced an outstanding bowling performance to outclass India by five wickets in the final match to win their maiden U19 World Cup cricket tournament at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium here on February 14. Batting first, India were bundled out for a meagre 145 runs in 45.1 overs, thanks to Ryan John (3-38) and Alzarri Joseph (3-39). In reply, Keacy Carty scored a match-winning knock of unbeaten 52 alongside Keemo Paul (40 not out) as the Windies chased down the total, reaching the target in 49.3 overs.
the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium. Ashwin's supreme display was backed by his team-mates as pacers Ashish Nehra (1/17), Jasprit Bumrah (1/10), left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (1/6) and part-
timer Suresh Raina (2/11) all contributed to the Sri Lankan debacle. Sri Lanka's batsmen could never get going with Dasun Shanaka (19) being their highest scorer. They were bowled out in the 18th of their allotted 20 overs. India won the toss and chose to field. Dhoni's decision was justified by off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin who opened the bowling and struck twice in the very first over. Opener Niroshan Dickwella (1), in for the injured Chamara Kapugedera, was stumped on the third ball and his experienced partner Tillakaratne Dilshan (1) was trapped leg before wicket off the sixth ball to cap off a dream over by Ashwin. Sri Lanka got rattled by the poor start, and their troubles worsened when skipper Dinesh Chandimal (8) skied an aggressive shot off Ashwin to be caught at mid-off to leave the visitors reeling at 12/3 in the third over. Ashwin continued to torment the Lankans. Pacer Nehra and Ravindra Jadeja joined in the act and picked wickets regularly. From there on, it was difficult for the Islanders to post a decent total, and they ultimately folded for 82.

12th South Asian Games Indian women beat Nepal 4-0 in final SHILLONG: The India women's football team won gold at the 12th South Asian Games (SAG), beating Nepal 4-0 in the final at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on January 15. The goal spree was started by Kamala when she converted a cross by Bala in the 31st minute. India led 1-0 at half-time. Kamala Devi doubled the home team's lead in the 55th minute when she netted after a goal-mouth melee inside the box. Bala Devi then etched her name on the scoresheet on the 71st. sources of biomass for cooking and heating. Millions of families are regularly exposed to high levels of particulate matter in their own homes. “India needs a threepronged mitigation approach to address industrial coal burning,
open burning for agriculture, and household air pollution sources,” said one of the researchers Chandra Venkataraman, professor at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, in Mumbai. In China, burning coal is the biggest contributor to poor air quality. Outdoor air pollution from coal alone caused an estimated 366,000 deaths in China in 2013, Qiao Ma, a doctoral student at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, noted. She found that air pollution will cause anywhere from 990,000 to 1.3 million premature deaths in 2030 unless even more ambitious targets are introduced. “Our study highlights the urgent need for even more aggressive strategies to reduce emissions from coal and from other sectors,” Ma said.

To protect men against osteoporosis, researchers aimed to understand the connection between boneloading exercise during adolescence and young adulthood when the skeleton is still growing and bone mass in middle age.
For the study, published in the American Journal of Men’s Health, researchers analysed data from the physical histories of 203 males aged 30-65 years. The researchers found that exercise-associated bone loading during adolescence and young adulthood benefited bone density in adulthood.

The international team of researchers from India, China, Canada and the US estimated that despite efforts to limit future emissions, the number of premature deaths linked to air pollution will climb over the next two decades unless more aggressive targets are set. Power plants, industrial manu-

Asthma may delay pregnancy: Study LONDON: Asthma has been linked with a prolonged time to pregnancy and a decreased birth rate, says a recent study. The median total time to pregnancy was 32.2 months in nonasthmatic women and 55.6 months in those with asthma, the study revealed.
Women with asthma also had fewer successful conceptions, the researchers said adding that the trend was more apparent as the women got older. Only 39.6 percent asthmatic women achieved pregnancy compared with 60.4 percent in the women without asthma, the findings revealed. “This finding in a clinical trial setting adds new weight to the epidemiological evidence suggesting a link between asthma and fertility. We have seen here that asthma seems to have a negative influence on fertility as it increases time to pregnancy and even more so with age,” said lead author, Elisabeth Juul Gade. The study adds to previous studies that have identified a link between asthma and fertility. As many as 96 women in the study had either an existing doctor’s diagnosis of asthma or were diagnosed with asthma when they entered the study, the researchers revealed. The researchers monitored the women during their fertility treatment for a minimum of 12 months, until they successful pregnancy.
Beetroot juice improves endurance, blood pressure in elderly IANS, NEW YORK

daily dose of beetroot juice may significantly improve exercise endurance and blood pressure in elderly patients with the heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HfpEF) syndrome, a new study says. While the daily dose of beetroot juice improved aerobic endurance by 24 percent, it significantly reduced blood pressure by 5-10 mmHg, the
study said. “These initial findings suggest that one week of daily beetroot juice could be a potential therapeutic option to improve aerobic endurance in patients with HfpEF, which has implications for improving everyday activities and quality of life,” said Dalane Kitzman, professor at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina, US. HfpEF, a dominant form of heart failure, occurring pri-
marily in older women reflects how the left ventricle of the heart pumps with each beat, the researchers said. Primary symptoms of HFPEF includes shortness of breath and fatigue with normal amounts of exertion, partly due to non-cardiac factors that reduce oxygen delivery to active skeletal muscles. The findings are detailed in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology-Heart Failure.

ollywood veteran Mithun Chakraborty, who is making his Telugu debut in upcoming thriller Malupu, was the first actor to be signed before all others for the movie, says its director Sathya Prabhas Pinisetty. The film, based on a true incident, features Sathya's brother Aadi Pinisetty in the lead and the director said he was a part of the project since its scripting phase. "My brother was a part of the project right from the beginning. Besides him, Mithun da was the first actor I had met with my story and had eventually signed him. I approached him with the role

I avoided watching many films because I am good at imitating and I did not want to merely ape someone else on screen. I wanted to be me when I was play-

She also doesn't don khaki in the entire film. Ever since the first look of her character was released, she's been getting plenty of offers to play a police officer.

K CHENNAI: Premam fame Anupama Parameswaran has replaced Shamlee in Dhanush-starrer Tamil political thriller Kodi, which is currently on the floors. "Shamlee exited the project due to some date issues. The makers have brought Anupama as her replacement and she's expected to join the sets next week," a source from the film's unit told IANS. Although Shamlee briefly shot for her portion in the film's first schedule, she could not join later as she had already committed to two other projects. Directed by Durai Senthil Kumar, the film also stars Trisha Krishnan, who will be playing a character with grey shades for the first time in her career. Dhanush essays dual roles in the upcoming film, which he has produced under his home banner Wunderbar Films.
Sathya says Mithun gave him 15 minutes to explain his character. "I somehow managed to get an appointment to meet Mithun da. He asked me to come meet him but told me that I have only 15 minutes to brief him about the
character. When I finally met him, he asked me why I came all the way from Chennai to try and convince him when he's least interested," he said. "I started narrating the incident first and he slowly got involved and I could see that he was getting curious. By the time I finished my narration, it was half hour but he wasn't convinced and wanted to know more about the story. We discussed for two hours and he finally said he will do the film," he added. Malupu, which releases on Friday, also features Nikki Galrani, Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli, Harish Uthaman, Pasupathy and Aadukalam Naren in important roles.

"My role in Kshanam is so different from how I've been accepted on television all these years. Audiences who have gotten used to seeing me on television are definitely in for a surprise and I hope they like my new avatar," Anasuya told IANS. It was the film's lead actor Adivi Sesh, who approached her with the role. "About a year and a half ago, Sesh came to me with the role. I wasn't keen back then as I was
busy hosting Devi Sri Prasad's concert in the US. Sesh met me again after I returned to India and this time made me read the script. I really liked my character," she said. Kshanam, directed by debutant Ravikanth Perepu and produced by PVP Cinema, also stars Adah Sharma, Vennela Kishore and Satyam Rajesh in important roles. Transforming into the police officer had its share of challenges, admits Anasuya, popular for hosting "Jabardasth". "Right from my body language to the way I speak, hold a gun or stare and even the minutest of the expression had to be changed. This is a character with very minimal make-up and I've never faced a camera without make-up, yet I had to do it for the sake of the character," she said, and added that she's

he 58th Grammy Awards ceremony saw rapper Kendrick Lamar win big with five trophies for his album “To Pimp a Butterfly” here on February 15. The gala, attended by the who’s who of the global music industry, also saw Indo-British filmmaker Asif Kapadia win the golden gramophone for his film “Amy”. Kapadia’s “Amy”, a documentary on the life of late singer Amy Winehouse, got the Best Music Film Award. The filmmaker, born and brought up in London, was excited more so as the Grammy Award comes to him after his victory at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards. “Amazing! Thank you Grammys! ‘Amy’ wins Best Music Film,” tweeted Kapadia, known for “The Warrior” and “Senna”. Sitarist Anoushka Shankar, who was nominated for the fifth time at the Grammys this year, failed to bag an award in the Best World Music Album category for “Home”. She has never won a Grammy, but was happy as this time she became the first Indian musician to be a presenter at the

The star of the night, where separate tributes were paid to David Bowie, Eagles’s Glenn Frey and Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister and Michael Jackson, was Lamar. Also, singer Taylor Swift was honored with the Album of the Year Grammy Award for “1989” at the ceremony, held at Staples Centre here. Interestingly, Lamar and Taylor Swift were in a face-off in multiple categories of the awards, but both emerged winners when the Best Music Video category honor was announced as the all-star video for Swift’s “Bad Blood” remix features Lamar. There were other Indian connects too. South African musician Wouter Kellerman’s latest album “Love language”, for which Bengalurubased Grammy winner Ricky Kej composed, produced and mixed “Aishwarya”, lost the Grammy for the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album category to “Sylva” by Snarky Puppy & Metropole Orkest. MUMBAI: After 40 years, “Sholay” stars Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Dharmendra and Hema Malini, apart from filmmaker Ramesh Sippy, shared the stage together at the music release of an album by Bollywood’s ‘dream girl’. Hema Malini’s debut music album “Dream Girl” was released at an event here on February 15. “And after 40 years the team of ‘Sholay’ got together in one frame this evening (Monday night), a music release of an album of Hema ji,” Big B posted on his blog on February 16 morning. “Two of our team Sanjeev Kumar and Amjad Khan we have lost. Time waits for no one... But time also acknowledges the wait,” he said, adding: “Dharamji and Hemaji live behind my house... Dharamji on the lane behind my back wall, and Hemaji a few feet further away, and we never get to meet each other. “How strange that we had to meet
and get together at an event.” The song Aji suniye to zaraa in the album has been sung by the actor-filmmaker-MP Hema Malini with singer Babul Supriyo, who is also its composer. A line of the track has the lyrics Big B se leke paaji, hinting at Amitabh and Dharmendra, who are lovingly called Big B and Dharam paaji in industry circuits. At the launch of the album by Saregama, Hema Malini said: “Art and entertainment is what keeps me going; it is a part of me now. I had not explored my singing talent before and I am therefore very excited to showcase this side of me to the audience. Hope they continue to shower their love on me as they have done over the past years.” It was back in 1973 that Hema Malini was inspired by the legendary Kishore Kumar to sing. Since then, she had it on her agenda to launch a music album.

The film is based on the 1986 sacrifice and heroic act of Neerja Bhanot, a flight attendant on the ill-fated Pan Am Flight 73, which was hijacked by terrorists. “Not just the Indians are proud of her but she is an example for the whole world, Neerja’s story is that way. When we were growing up and in college, this incident had happened and it was an inspiring and a huge matter,” he added.

Throckmorton’s blog on patheos reads: “The lawsuit alleges that Gospel for Asia, Yohannan, and other GFA officials misrepresented to donors how, when, and
where charitable donations would be spent, and funneled vast amounts of the hundreds of millions of dollars GFA has collected into for-profit businesses and an expensive headquarters.” Marc Stanley, lead attorney on the case, said: “K.P. Yohannan and his Gospel for Asia inner circle have been exploiting the goodwill and generosity of devout Christians around the country for years. Gospel for Asia should return all the money it has taken from donors who thought they were contributing to charity.” GFA, formerly a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA), had its membership revoked in October 2015 due to “failure to comply with multiple ECFA standards”.

Notably, under a newer law, 17-year-olds who will turn 18 by November 8, 2016 are eligible to register and vote now in the March Primary, even if they won’t be 18 on the date of the Primary. In order to register to vote, a person must be: a U.S. citizen; at least 18 years of age by November 8, 2016; and be a resident of the precinct at least 30 days before the election. Immigration detentions decline in New Jersey BY A STAFF WRITER ERSEY CITY, NJ -- The number of people apprehended by officers with the US Immigration and Customs Office (ICE) in the Garden State last month declined, despite the federal government announcing nationwide raids that sparked protests across the state. ICE officers in the state apprehended and detained 139 people during January, according to Alvin Philips, the New Jersey spokesperson for ICE. The numbers fall in line with apprehensions for previous months and was actually lower than December. “We have no absolutely no part in enforcement that has occurred in other states,” said Philips Thursday. “We are not targeting any individuals from Central America or anywhere else, we are targeting priority one and some cases priority two, as usual.” Under ICE’s own guidelines, priority one cases are those who pose, “threats to national security, border security, and public safety,” such as suspected terrorists and those convicted of major felonies. Priority two cases are those with serious misdemeanors, three or more misdemeanors or “significant” visa abusers.

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- The adventurous life of Mowgli is back again to entertain the world. Jon Favreau’s upcoming movie ‘The Jungle Book’ tells the story of Mowgli, a small boy who was raised by wolves in a forest in India. The trailer of the film, which is scheduled to release on April 15, was released on Sunday during the Super Bowl broadcast. The trailer gives glimpses of Neel Sethi, an Indian American boy, who plays the role of Mowgli running for his life while surviving among various species of animals in a jungle. While Mowgli is protected by the black panther Bagheera and Baloo the bear, he has to encounter with the tiger Sher Khan and the story is about his

adventurous journey of self-discovery and self-protection. The film is the new adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s classic work “The Jungle Book”. The voice of the characters is cast by eminent actors, including Ben Kingsley as Bagheera, Bill Murray as Baloo, Idris Elba as Sher Khan, Scarlett Johansson as Kaa and Christopher Walken as King Louie. Sethi, who has never acted in a movie before, is the only actor seen on-screen in the trailer. All the animals that he interacts with are created via Computer-Generated Imagery, similar to the work that actor Suraj Sharma did in the 2011 film ‘Life of Pi’. The search to find Sethi, who is from New York, was an extensive one, with thousands of young boys auditioning from the US, the UK, Canada, and New Zealand.

Sacramento Indian man still missing BY A STAFF WRITER ACRAMENTO, CA -Authorities have ended the Delta search for the 55-year-old Indian native who went missing after his daughter’s wedding at Grand Island Mansion in Walnut Grove. The announcement by the Sacramento County Sheriff ’s Department came 72 hours after Prasad Moparti was reported missing. Sheriff ’s spokesman Tony Turnbull said there was no “suspicious circumstances or foul play leading to his disappearance.” In a prepared statement, Turnbull said Moparti was considered a voluntary missing person but considering his lack of familiarity with the area and history of depression, the department used “all resources available in attempts to locate him.” “Family members ... indicated Moparti suffered from depression, and that he showed indicators of his depression leading up to the wedding,” the Sheriff ’s Department stated in news release. That contradicts the picture painted earlier by daughter Durga Moparti, 29. “Our dad was really very happy. He was dancing. He was really joyful,” she

told reporters hours before the search was called off. She said her father, an avid walker who manages apartments in the city of Hyderabad in southern India, danced at the last week’s party and enjoyed the ceremony the next day. She said as people were packing to leave the mansion on February 13 afternoon, Prasad Moparti told a family member that he was going for a short
walk. When he didn’t come back, she said the family searched for 10 miles before calling the police. Moparti is about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and 180 pounds and dressed in traditional Indian attire when last seen. The family posted fliers from Isleton to Rio Vista. On February 13 and 14, searchers from the Sheriff ’s Department, California Highway Patrol and Coast Guard units meticulously combed the shores as the bride’s family circulated the fliers. On February 15, a CHP plane searched by air while a sheriff ’s dog attempted to pick up a scent. “We’ve done just about everything imaginable,” Deputy Dave Kirby said before the search was called off. Earlier, Durga Moparti had said that she could not comprehend a scenario in which her father would vanish. He does not have his passport or money, she said. Moparti had been in the United States for about a month. “The only indication that we had was that he had been idle” since arriving in the US, she said. “He was a workaholic back in India and was managing several projects. He was bored.”
Koss, American Express settle defalcation case BY A STAFF WRITER ILWAUKEE, WI -- A US-based headphone manufacturing company has settled its lawsuit against American Express for profiting from the embezzlement of $34 million of its funds by the firm’s Indian American former top executive Sujata ‘Sue’ Sachdeva. Koss Corporation, where Sachdeva worked as a vice president for finance, said that the settlement called for Koss to receive a gross payment of $3 million, but net proceeds would include expenses relating to attorneys’ fees and costs. “The matter has been resolved to the mutual satisfaction of the parties,” said Michael Koss, CEO of Koss Corp, in a statement. Koss had accused American Express of profiting from the embezzlement activities by Sachdeva, who spent the stolen funds lavishly on luxury goods using her American Express account. The accusation and lawsuit came despite the fact that the embezzlement came to light because American Express alerted Koss of Sachdeva’s potentially fraudulent activity. Koss alleged that the credit card firm waited months to report that Sachdeva paid

Mayor Jim Kenney last week announced that a ban on skateboarding would be lifted until the park closed after a few days. The park has long been a skateboarding mecca because of its granite ledges, benches and steps. Skaters from around the region have been taking advantage of their last chance to use it. It’s not clear who the vandals were. The park and welcome center are getting a $20 million facelift. Meditation room soon at Nevada University BY A STAFF WRITER ENO, NV -- “Meditation and Reflection Room” in the upcoming $44-million William N. Pennington Student Achievement Center at University of Nevada-Reno (UNR) is set to open on March 16. This information was given by UNR president Dr. Marc A. Johnson to distinguished religious statesman Rajan Zed. Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, has commended UNR for accepting the longstanding need of students for a neutral space for meditation, prayer, reflection, etc., and thus recognizing the intersection of spirituality and education. The room will be open to all campus students belonging to various religions/denominations and nonbelievers for meditation, reflection and prayer. The 78,000-square-foot Student Achievement Center, which is also opening on March 16, will also include Writing Center, Math Center, Tutoring Center, Career Services, Advising Center, Student Veterans Affairs, Disabilities Resource Center, Counseling Services, etc. Many universities in USA and Canada already have prayer/meditation room for quiet reflection and spiritual exercise. UNR is recognized as a National Tier 1 University, and has about 21,000 students.

an estimated $20 million of her bills with Koss funds. The lawsuit contended that American Express executives delayed exposing Sachdeva’s activities after discovering the embezzlement in an effort to avoid losses and to profit from Sachdeva’s business. American Express had called the claims preposterous and moved to dismiss the lawsuit, which was filed in 2010. Trial dates in the matter were scheduled for later this month, according to online court records from Superior Court of Maricopa County, Arizona. Under the settlement, the parties
provided mutual releases that resolved all claims involved in the litigation between Koss and American Express Co., according to its press release. Sachdeva, now 53, was sentenced to 11 years in prison in November 2010 for embezzling $34 million of company funds. She had pleaded guilty to using company funds to pay her personal bills and admitted running up expensive bills at Milwaukee-area companies. Sachdeva’s husband, Ramesh, filed for divorce in November 2010; it was finalized in September 2011. As part of that divorce, the couple sold their home.

Man faces 20-year jail for hate crime
BY A STAFF WRITER INELLAS COUNTY, FL -- Martin Alan Schnitzler, 43, has pleaded guilty to a hate crime in the Middle District of Florida for calling two mosques located in Pinellas County, Florida, and threatening to firebomb the mosques and shoot their congregants. According to the Justice Department, Schnitzler pleaded guilty to obstructing persons in the free exercise of religious beliefs for making the violent threats. As part of his plea, he admitted that on November 13 last, he intentionally obstructed members of the Islamic Society of St. Petersburg, Florida, and the Islamic Society of Pinellas County from practising their religion when he left voicemail messages threatening the safety of the mosques’ congregants. Schnitzler admitted that his threats were prompted by the terrorist attacks in Paris. Among other things, he also admitted that in one of the voicemails he threatened to “personally have a militia” report to one of the mosques and “firebomb you, shoot whoever is there on sight in the head. I don’t care if they’re two years old or a hundred.” As a result of the above threats, both mosques requested increased law-

New Sikh temple in MI’s Muskegon
BY A STAFF WRITER USKEGON , MI -- It’s not until you get to the main hall of the new Sikh Temple in Muskegon County that you see it in all its strength. Yellow, blue, orange and white come together and contrast strongly against the colorless snow that recently fell in the area. The Sikh Temple is the first in the Muskegon area. The area members, who previously had to drive to the Grand Rapids area to visit a temple, opened the doors to the local temple on November 14. The building that the new Sikh Temple of Muskegon is housed in was once a church, one that fit the needs of the local Sikh community. Amanpreet Jhandi, who has been living in America since 2002, talked about the process that finally resulted in a home for his community. While the work that was put into the temple is evident, what is not always visible is another issue that Jhandi says that Sikhs young and old face from time to time.

enforcement presence at their locations and took extra safety precautions for congregants. “Our Constitution and laws guarantee all people–regardless of where they worship–the right to live free from violence and discrimination,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “Criminal threats of violence against people or places of worship have no place in our society, and as proven today, the Department of Justice will continue to vigorously prosecute those who commit religion-based hate crimes.” “The right to worship as one chooses, free from threats and intimidation, is one of the core principles upon which our great
nation was founded,” said U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley III of the Middle District of Florida. “The U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to taking whatever action is necessary to vindicate this important First Amendment right.” Sentencing for the defendant will be scheduled at a later date. Schnitzler faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. The FBI is investigating the case with the assistance of the St. Petersburg Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Daniel George and Daniel Irick of the Middle District of Florida and Trial Attorney Gabriel Davis of the Civil Rights Division’s Criminal Section are prosecuting the case.

OHNSTOWN, PA -- A troubling image apparently snapped inside a western Pennsylvania high school has made its way onto social media, where it has stirred up a controversy. That’s because the photo seems to show two students apparently desecrating the American flag. A boy is stepping on the Stars and Stripes, and a girl is raising her middle finger and sticking out her tongue in the image that has since made the rounds on Facebook. Meanwhile, the suburban Johnstown, Pa., school district at the center of the unpatriotic storm is promising to get to the bottom of the photograph.
Vasant Panchami at Shivalaya Temple BY A STAFF WRITER OSTON, TX -- Vasant Panchami, evening puja of Ma Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom, art, music, science, medicine and technology was performed by devotees and children at the Shivalaya Temple of Greater Boston on February 12. This is one of the biggest festivals of India, celebrated with much devotion and reverence. Hundreds of Boston devotees thronged to offer their prayers and became the part of the celebrations. The program started with Bhajans by Shri Mohan Ji and his daughter who created a spiritual atmosphere in the shrine by their melodious singing. Later, Shri Nishikant Ji amazed all devotees with his wonderful tabla performance. Pandit Jay Narayan Badal Ji performed a very elaborative Ma Saraswati Puja with Vedic rituals and chanted the sacred hymns with utmost devotion. Shri Mohan Ji and Shri Nishikant Ji participated in the puja along with their family members. Ma Saraswati was dressed in yellow garments and worshipped with yellow flowers

and fruits. Yellow color holds a special meaning for this celebration as it signifies the brilliance of nature and the vibrancy of life as India’s fields are filled with yellow flowers at this time of the year. Many devotees also wore yellow clothes and kept their pens, notebooks, and pencils near the Goddess Saraswati’s feet to seek her blessings. Schoolchildren and toddlers made a beeline in their best yellow dresses to offer prayers on Saraswati puja. This festival has special significance for the students and they prayed most enthusiastically to her. Young children were taught their first
words on this day, since it is considered an auspicious day to begin formal education. Pandit Badal Ji blessed all children to have good education and successful careers in life. Missing student found dead near beach BY A STAFF WRITER ULLERTON , CA -- The body of Cal State Fullerton student Praveen Galla, who had gone missing since February 2, was found floating in the waters near the Newport Beach pier on February 9. Galla, 23, a second-year engineering student, was reported missing by his roommates February 2 when he didn’t return home, the Cal State Fullerton police said in a statement. Lifeguards at the beach found Galla’s body on February 9, and, the next day, the Orange County coroner’s office identified it to be that of Galla. The Indian American student had taken a ride via Uber on February 1 from Fullerton to the campus and arrived there at about 5 pm.

Praveen Galla
A friend of Galla’s reported receiving a “check in” notification on his cellphone that Galla had been in the Newport Beach area. It is believed that Galla had taken a bus from Fullerton to the beach, authorities said. Sources said he was struggling with his studies and was worried about his status in the country. His friends said he wasn’t suicidal, but was depressed about it. In an e-mail to the Cal State Fullerton campus community, university president Mildred Garcia said, “Praveen was a bright young mind and a valued member of our campus. While we are still learning details of the circumstances surrounding his death, we do know that he will be missed.”

Teen’s heart bleeds for schools in India BY A STAFF WRITER ESTHARTFORD,CT--Ishaan Patel, a 13-year-old Indian American in 8th grade of Kingswood Oxford School in West Hartford, Connecticut, has set an example in philanthropy. The teen has launched Planting Pencils, a non-profit organization dedicated to donating money and supplies to under-funded schools, to promote education and empower children around the globe. Ishaan was encouraged to start the non-profit venture after visits by his aunt to volunteer at some under-funded schools in India and Costa Rica. “We have all this stuff here, all this technology like smart boards, and they only have one chalkboard,” says Ishaan, referencing the schools his aunt visited. Troubled by this, Ishaan began researching the status of education in under-served countries after attending a leadership program at Stanford University last summer. He created a YouTube video with information from organizations such as the United Nations. Utilizing collection boxes at his school, Ishaan has gathered countless school supplies. He has also received monetary donations totalling $5,000. “This last Christmas, he sent an email to all of the family and asked them to please not buy him a gift and, instead, to donate,” says Alpa. Soon, he will begin to distribute the goods to schools across the globe and right here in Connecticut. “Just in the US, over 20 million kids don’t have access to internet or computers, and that puts them at a big disadvantage,” says Ishaan, noting that he accepts used tablets and computers to give to students in cities like Hartford and Waterbury. Ultimately, Ishaan would like to build a school where there isn’t one in a community overseas. He would offer daily healthy meals, along with clean water for drinking and washing to encourage families to educate kids.
