A cruel joke told in the form of a psychedelic fable replete with visuals of Sanju baba aka Ranbir Kapoor, high on drugs, so high that he can’t tell the difference between a laugh and a cry, or a mangalsutra and a toilet seat. U
S President Donald Trump marked Memorial Day by touting his a d m i n i s t r a t i o n’s achievements and remembered fallen service members, calling their love of country “more deep and more pure than most will ever know”, the media reported. Trump commemorated the day which is held annually to honor service members who died for the US, with a tweet saying: “Happy Memorial Day! Those who died for our great country would be very happy and proud at how well our country is doing today. Best economy in decades, lowest unemployment numbers for Blacks and Hispanics ever (and women in 18 years), rebuilding our military and so much more. Nice!”
Mexico will finance border wall: Trump WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has insisted he will have Mexico pay for the construction of the border wall he has promised to build with the country. “I don’t want to cause a problem, but in the end, Mexico’s going to pay for the wall,” Donald Trump said at a campaign rally. In response to Trump, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto answered on his official Twitter account that Mexico will never pay for a wall “not now, not ever”.

He had also tweeted a video in honor of the holiday. Later he visited the Arlington National Cemetery where he placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and stood in silence as a bugle played “Taps”.
“They marched into hell so that America could know the blessings of peace. They died so that freedom could live,” he said. “To every parent who weeps for a child, to every child who mourns for a parent and to every husband
or wife whose heart has been torn in two today we ask God to comfort your pain, to ease your sorrow and to wipe away your tears. “This is a very special day and today our whole country thanks you, embraces you and pledges to you we will never forget our heroes,” Trump added. Trump honored several living veterans in attendance, including former Republican Sen. Bob Dole and Ray Chavez, both World War II veterans. Chavez, at 106, is the oldest-living survivor of the attacks on Pearl Harbor, reports CNN. However, Trump’s earlier tweet was ridiculed on social media,. According to statistics from the Department of Labour, the black and Hispanic unemployment rates both reached record lows last month. The US unemployment rate also fell to 3.9 per cent in April.

‘Mueller to meddle in mid-term polls’ WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has alleged “without providing any evidence” that special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation will meddle in the midterm elections to benefit Democrats. Trump’s claim is his latest attack on the credibility of the Russia investigation as being politically motivated, is a significant new step, CNN said. “The 13 Angry Democrats (plus people who worked eight years for Barack Obama) working on the rigged Russia Witch Hunt, will be meddling with the mid-term elections, especially now that Republicans are taking the lead in polls,” Trump tweeted. Asking his party members to “stay tough” Trump added that there was no “Collusion, except by the Democrats”. Trump signs ‘Right-to-Try’ bill for terminally-ill patients IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Donald Trump this week signed a new bill titled “Right to Try” which allows terminally ill patients to seek drugs that are still experimental and not fully approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. “As I proudly sign this bill, thousands of terminally ill Americans will have the help, the hope and the fighting chance — and I think it’s going to be better than chance — that they will be cured, that they will be helped, that they will be able to be with their families for a long time, or maybe just for a longer time,” Trump said, Xinhua
reported. Under the legislation, patients who are near death, or who have a disease that is likely to lead to severely premature death, have the right to seek drug treatments that remain in clinical trials after passing phase 1 of the FDA approval process. The House this week voted 250169 in favor of the bill, which the Senate passed in August. Advocates for the bill say it opens a door for terminally ill people in states that haven’t passed such a law. Critics argue that the legislation disempowers the FDA and won’t make it easier for the patients to access these drugs, local media reported.

supports right-to-try legislation. Right-to-try laws exist in 40 of US 50 states. With the new federal legislation, Coleman argues, patients in states without these laws
could save time accessing experimental treatments by eliminating FDA application requirements. Opponents of the bill, including over 100 patient and provider advocacy groups, say it won’t have a major impact on accessing treatments; on the contrary, it could have a detrimental effect on how the FDA safeguards people’s health. It is unclear how many Americans have taken advantage of right-to-try laws because the vast majority of states do not have central reporting requirements, said local media reports, noting that there’s no guarantee that insurance companies would pay for these treatments.

BJP suffers shock defeats
Opposition unity gets by-poll boost ahead of next year’s general elections IANS, NEW DELHI
A
head of next year’s general elections, a united opposition got a major boost on Thursday when it delivered a huge blow to the BJP, defeating it in the Kairana Lok Sabha by-election in Uttar Pradesh and Bhandara-Gondiya in Maharashtra while the saffron party managed to retain the Palghar parliamentary seat and win only one out of the 10 Assembly seats in 10 states. Out of the four Lok Sabha constituencies that voted on May 24, the Nagaland Lok Sabha constituency returned the candidate of the ruling Nagaland Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), a BJP ally, who defeated the Naga People’s Front (NPF) candidate. The biggest shock for the BJP came from Kairana -- a seat the BJP won in 2014 -- where the opposition had put up a common candidate. Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) candidate Tabassum Hasan, supported by the Congress, the SP and the BSP, trounced the BJP’s Mriganka Singh in Kairana in Uttar Pradesh by over 55,000 votes. The BJP along with its allies had swept 73 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh in the 2014

general elections and won an overwhelming 312 seats out of a total 423 in the state assembly elections last year. Along with the Kairana reverse, the BJP also suffered the ignominy of losing the Noorpur Assembly seat to the Samajwadi Party in the by election in Uttar Pradesh. Samajwadi candidate Naimul Hassan defeated BJP’s Avani Singh by over 6,200 votes. The Kairana defeat for the BJP
comes on top of the failure to retain Gorakhpur and Phulpur in the by-elections in March this year in which the Samajwadi candidates, with the backing of BSP, had defeated BJP candidates. In Palghar Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) win came in a triangular fight in which the candidate of its sulking ally, the Shiv Sena, cornered a considerable chunk of votes. BJP’s Rajendra Gavit defeat-
ed Shiv Sena’s Srinivas Wanga by over 29,500 votes. However, the BJP candidate Hemant Patel had to bite the dust in the Bhandara-Gondiya seat in the state with the NCP’s Madhukar Kukde snatching the constituency that was won by the BJP in the 2014 poll. The Congress supported the NCP candidate in the current by poll. Kukde defeated Patel by over 45,000 votes. RLD leader Jayant Chaudhary
hoped that the combined opposition would keep its momentum to defeat the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections next year. “I am confident that the RLD will play a role in how to carry forward the opposition unity and alliance. Whatever the alliance, we will play a positive role,” he told reporters. Of the 10 assembly seats where by-polls were held last Thursday, the BJP scored just one in Uttarakhand while the Congress won Punjab’s Shahkot, Karnataka’s RR Nagar and Meghalaya’s Ampati that made it the single largest party in the northeastern state. The Trinamool Congress won the Maheshtala seat in West Bengal while the CPI-M candidate defeated a Congress rival in Kerala’s Chengannur. Jailed politician Lalu Prasad’s RJD defeated the ruling BJP and JD-U’s joint candidate in Bihar’s Jokihat assembly seat where it was more of a battle of prestige for the former allies - the RJD and the JDU. RJD’s Shahnawaz Alam beat a JD-U candidate by over 41,000 votes. Lalu Prasad’s son Tejashwi Yadav, a former Deputy Chief Minister, said the loss was a lesson for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who broke away from the anti-BJP grand alliance and joined hands with the BJP in Bihar.

aking their bilateral relationship into a new era, India and Indonesia this week agreed to establish a new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, condemned terrorism in all its forms, including cross-border terror, and to open an inter-faith dialogue in a bid to eradicate radicalism and violent extremism. This was agreed to during a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Joko Widodo who also came out with a shared vision of India-Indonesia maritime cooperation that seeks to achieve a free, open, transparent, rules-based IndoPacific region where sovereignty and territorial integrity are respected. In Modi’s first visit to the country with the biggest Muslim population in the world, a joint statement issued after delegation-level talks said that inter-faith dialogue was a reflection of the united commitment of both the countries to explore a new understanding on the rise of religious identities, the

Modi’s momentum under attack Political analysts said the outcome of 2019 elections will largely depend on opposition parties coming together to pose a common challenge to the BJP PRASHANT SOOD, NEW DELHI
W
ith his party ‘stopped’ in Karnataka and bracing to face crucial Assembly elections in three major states in the north this year end, Prime Minister Narendra Modi takes his government into the last year in office with the political momentum slightly shaken against the mounting burden of fulfilling expectations on numerous election promises. Political analysts say that many of the promises of the Modi government have been rhetoric and it needs course correction by being more accommodative over the next year if BJP’s prospects are to improve. They said the outcome of 2019 elections will largely depend on opposition parties coming together to pose a common challenge to the BJP. The BJP’s inability to form the government in Karnataka, despite being the single largest party, has come as a damper to the party. It had suffered jolts earlier this year in defeats in prestigious parliamentary by-elections in Gorakhpur and Phulpur as also Ajmer and Alwar. “Intolerance has been a major drawback in the last four years,” says political analyst and senior journalist H.K. Dua adding that

the idea of India as a plural polity had suffered due to incidents like ‘love jihad’ and lynchings. “Every incident fouls the atmosphere. India is a composite society and Prime Minister himself said ‘Sabka saath, sabka vikas’ which did not happen. That’s why Dalits have been very angry, tribals have been very angry, farmers have been very angry. Caste divisions are sharper than before. That does not speak well,” he said. Dua said constitutional institu-
tions “have not been shown the respect they deserve.” He said consensus between the ruling and opposition parties for running parliamentary democracy has been ignored. “The initiative had to come from Prime Minister but that has not come,” he said, adding there is doubt how deep is the faith of government in democratic practices. “I don’t think in 2019 there will be Modi wave. Opposition will be able to present a formidable challenge if they unite. So the unity is
very, very important. But even as efforts to forge understanding among opposition parties continue at various levels, Modi continues to have a crosscountry appeal as the prime votecatcher of the BJP. As Prime Minister, he has sought to bring speed to decision-making by cutting red tape, set ambitious targets, launched some imaginative schemes, focused on delivery, simplified norms and shaken off lethargy in the official machinery.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government is seen to be more focused and target-oriented but there is little visible impact of some of its initiatives such as the Swachh Bharat Campaign. Subrata Mukherjee, a political analyst who taught at Delhi University, said there have been more promises than delivery in the past four years and projects like Start Up India and Make in India have not progressed the way they were made out to. “The economic record of the government is not very good and they are now postponing everything to 2022. That is beyond their mandate. So it is politics of postponement,” he said. He said most of the schemes are a rehash of Congress schemes. Mukherjee said Modi government needs to practice a more “accommodative politics.” “They will have to work out accommodative politics, bring new segments. The scheduled castes, Muslims are angry. If they want to retain power, they will have to go for drastic course correction,” he said. He said opposition unity was important for good politics and the proposed federal front cannot do without congress. “BJP will also have to understand that 2019 will be coalition government whether led by it or the Congress,” he said.
Karnataka shadow on Modi’s 4th anniversary Several things appear to have gone wrong for the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
I
f Narendra Modi expected Karnataka to be the icing on the cake on the eve of the completion of his four years in office, he must be disappointed. Yet, the setback in the southern state is only one of the several reverses which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suffered in the recent past. These include a series of by-election defeats in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and UP, which have not been adequately compensated by the party’s successes in the northeast. That’s because electoral outcomes in the country’s heartland have a greater salience than those in a region generally regarded as remote.
Considering that three more assembly elections are due in the next few months where the BJP is facing the anti-incumbency factor, it is obvious that Modi’s fourth anniversary is not the happiest of occasions. Several things appear to have gone wrong for the Prime Minister and his party. Foremost among them is the general bleakness of the economic scene because of the paucity of jobs and the continuing agrarian distress. But even more than the economic woes — which have led to the blanking out of the phrase ‘achhe din’ (good days) from the saffron lexicon — what may have hurt the government even more is an intimidating atmosphere generated by a political project of vir-

tually remoulding Indian society by obliterating all the supposed ignominy which the country is said to have suffered during the 1,200 years of “slavery” under Muslim and British rule. Not surprisingly, the 60-odd years of Congress rule have been included in this period of “alien” governance. Hence, the rewriting of history textbooks and the packing of autonomous academic institutions with people in tune with the
ruling party’s thinking. These have been accompanied by the veneration of the cow and the targeting of “suspected” beef-eaters. It is this imposition of the saffron writ which made former Vice President Hamid Ansari say that the Muslims were living in fear and led to protests by writers, historians, film makers and others within the first 12 months of Modi’s rule who returned the awards which they had once won. Instead of analysing why so
many distinguished people were expressing their disquiet, the government and the BJP chose to dismiss them as “manufactured protests”, in Arun Jaitley’s words, and the dissatisfaction of a section which has lost the privileges which it had enjoyed under the previous dispensation. Evidently, the BJP believed that it was on the right track — in fact, the protests may have reinforced this self-perception — and that there was no need for a rethink.

TRUMP-KIM MEET ON TRACK? North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s right-hand man reaches New York, meets US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo before the summit IANS, NEW YORK
S
enior North Korean official Kim Yong-chol met US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in New York on May 30, ahead of a historic summit between the leaders of the two countries. Kim, the most senior North Korean official to visit the US in 18 years, was seen exiting the Corinthian building in Manhattan at around 8.30 p.m., following a dinner with Pompeo, reports CNN. The meeting came as the two sides look to revive the prospects of an on-again off-again summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, originally scheduled for June 12 but later canceled by Trump. A senior State Department official described the dinner as an opportunity for the two men to

strengthen their relationship and discuss preparations. Prior to Kim Yong-chol's arrival in New York, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said that the officials' “conversation is going
to be focused on denuclearization of the peninsula as well as the summit that will take place in Singapore”, adding that the administration was still aiming for a June 12 meeting.
“We are preparing and expect that to take place on June 12 and if not, we'll be ready on July 12,” CNN quoted Sanders as saying. Kim Yong-chol is seen as a powerful surrogate for Kim Jong-un. The vice chairman of North Korea's Party Central Committee, he is the top official in charge of relations between North and South Korea and has been present in all recent high-level meetings with South Korea. He is also a former head of North Korea's Reconnaissance Bureau, an espionage and special operations organization. He is believed to have been involved in a torpedo attack that sank the South Korean warship Cheonan in 2010, killing 46 South Korean sailors. Pompeo and Kim Yong-chol's high-level discussions come as a US delegation extended its stay in South Korea “for at least another day”.
Russian Minister to visit N. Korea MOSCOW: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was set to visit North Korea on May 31 to discuss the situation around the Korean peninsula. Lavrov will discuss with his North Korean counterpart Ri Yongho the situation on the Korean peninsula, bilateral issues and other key topics of international and regional significance, according to the Foreign Ministry statement cited by TASS news agency. The envoy's visit in the middle of negotiations to save the Singapore summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un scheduled for June 12. Last week, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Lavrov's visit to North Korea was being considered but did not offer any dates. The last meeting between Lavrov and Ri was on April 10 in Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin had regretted Trump's announcement canceling his summit with Kim. —IANS

op India and Pakistan army commanders on Tuesday spoke over a special hotline contact and committed to peace on the borders in Jammu and Kashmir amid persistent crackling of gunfire and mounting casualties on both sides. “The hotline mechanism was initiated by Pakistan Director
General Military Operations (DGMO) Maj. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza at 6 p.m. with his Indian counterpart Lt.Gen. Anil Chauhan. “Both the DGMOs reviewed the prevailing situation along the Line of Control and International Border in Jammu and Kashmir,” an army spokesperson said. Lt.Gen. Chauhan, the spokesperson said, “agreed with
the proposal (from his Pakistani counterpart) to undertake sincere measures to improve the existing situation to ensure peace and avoidance of hardships to the civil-

US poised to impose steel, aluminium tariffs on EU IANS, WASHINGTON
T
he US is poised to impose steel and aluminium tariffs on the European Union (EU) and possibly on Canada and Mexico, this week when a temporary exemption expires as trade talks remain at an impasse, a media report said. The threat of tariffs was supposed to force trading partners into quickly agreeing to US concessions, including limiting imports of steel and aluminium and other trade terms that favor American companies and workers, an informed official told The New York Times this week.
In addition to the metal tariffs, President Trump has threatened to impose levies on imported automobiles, the bulk of which comes
from Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Japan and the EU. Discussions between the countries are continuing and President
Donald Trump could ultimately decide not to impose tariffs on any of the trading partners, according to the official. But with the exemption deadline quickly approaching and the countries still far apart on many issues, a resolution could be tough to pull off by Friday. The EU, Canada and Mexico, all of which were granted temporary exemptions from the metal tariffs, said they were unsure whether the tariffs would go into effect on Friday, but were readying retaliatory measures that would impose equal harm on American consumers and businesses in case they are triggered. Chrystia Freeland, the Canadian
Foreign Minister, met US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on Wednesday to discuss the tariffs, as well as Nafta (North American Free Trade Association). “I would like to absolutely assure Canadians, particularly those who work in steel and aluminium industries, that the government is absolutely prepared to and will defend Canadian interests and Canadian jobs,” she said. “We will respond appropriately.” Cecilia Malmstrom, the European Trade Commissioner, told the European Parliament that she expected to have a “positive agenda with the US side, with no tariffs or quotas”.

here are signs of tension between the Indian Consulate General in Toronto and the regional police over a hotline set up by the diplomatic mission after the explosion at a restaurant in this heavily Southasian city, according to The Toronto Star. “As the investigation continued, Peel police issued a rebuke on May 27, reminding anyone with information about bomb attack on the Bombay Bhel restaurant in the Toronto suburb, that the police — and not the Indian Consulate of Toronto — are the ones to call,” the newspaper said. Peel is the region covering Mississauga and other municipalities in the Greater Toronto Area. The newspaper reported that police said in a written statement sent to it: “Although we appreciate the assistance of any outside agen-

MISSISSAUGA (CANADA): One of the two bombers of an Indian restaurant in this Toronto suburb that left 15 injured last week, was likely a woman, according to Regional Police Superintendent Rob Ryan. Although police initially said that the two attackers, who put a homemade bomb at the Bombay Bhel restaurant on May 24 were men, Ryan told a news conference that “investigators now believe one suspect could be a woman”. “There is evidence that has come to light through witnesses and some other video that leads investigators to believe that it just may not be a male,” he added. “Suspects went to great length to hide their identities,” he said.
Bhatia was quoted as saying by the Global News. “People are calling to find out if their relatives are involved because in the middle of the night they couldn’t reach any of the numbers,” he told the national multimedia website. There was no indication from Swaraj or Bhatia that they were conducting a parallel investigation or soliciting information of an investigative nature but that they were only helping people with information about family and relatives. Canadian officials have not released the names of the three people who were seriously injured in the blast. The police reaction may have been sparked by an Ontario Gurudwara Committee statement criticizing the consulate. The Star said the Committee accused “the Indian Consulate of Toronto for overstepping its diplomatic reach by establishing a hotline to gather information on the bombing”.

arnataka will soon waive the loans of all farmers in two phases as promised in the manifesto of the ruling Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S), said Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy this week. “In the next 15 days, we will notify a two-phase scheme to waive loans of all farmers especially small and marginal who raised them from state cooperatives, rural and staterun banks over the last nine years,” Kumaraswamy told reporters after a meeting with representatives of about 30 farmers' associations in the state secretariat. Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara, who represents the Congress in the coalition government, and opposition BJP's deputy leader in the Assembly Govind M. Karjol also participated in the meeting that lasted over two hours. “As I am heading a coalition government, I will have to discuss the modalities of the loan waiver
BRIEFS: CPI-M’s Saji Cherian wins Kerala bypoll with record margin CHENGANNUR (KERALA): Contrary to the UDF's expectations, CPI-M candidate Saji Cherian on May 31 won with one of the biggest margins from the Chengannur assembly constituency as he defeated Congress' D. Vijayakumar by 20,956 votes. At the end of the counting process in the 182 polling booths, Cherian secured 67,303 votes, Vijayakumar got 46,347 and BJP's P.S. Sreedharan Pillai finished third with 35,270 votes. Voting took place on Monday. Cherian said that it's a reward for his four-decade of active public life. “My party has been the source of my strength and this is a really good victory. It is a stamp of approval for the ruling Pinarayi Vijayan government.” The CPI-M candidate was able to get a firm hold in more than 90 per cent of the booths. Cherian Aled with 77 votes from the booth from where former Congress Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's father hails and so was the case even at the polling booth where Leader of opposition Ramesh Chennithala and his family voted . Admitting that the JD-S had promised to waive farm loans, including interest on them if elected to power, the Chief Minister said as the party did not get a clear mandate in the May 12 Assembly elections, he had to consult the
Congress over the decision since it involved a huge amount (Rs 53,000 crore) of government funds. “Only 36 JD-S candidates got elected, relegating our party to the third position after the BJP with 104 seats and the Congress with 78 seats. “As a result, I could not fulfil the promise made in the manifesto. We are trying to stay one step ahead of cyber-criminals and what is working in our favour is amazing talent at Microsoft that specialize in ML and AI,” Bratt said. Meanwhile, after sparking a storm over his remarks that he was at the mercy of the Congress, Kumaraswamy said his ruling ally had numbers that made its voice stronger in the coalition government. “What mercy? They supported my party. According to their direction I have to work. That is my responsibility,” the Chief Minister told reporters in New Delhi. Kumaraswamy also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other union ministers in the capital.
Nipah infections: Don’t blame the bats alone, improve public health HARITHA JOHN AND S. GOPIKRISHNA WARRIER, THIRUVANATHAPURAM
T
he Nipah virus (NiV) infection has claimed 14 lives, from Kozhikode and Malappuram districts of Kerala in the month of May. However, the disease itself was contained quickly before it could become an outbreak. On May 24, the Health Ministry, Government of India issued a media release stating that a multi-disciplinary team that was reviewing the situation from Kerala had concluded that “the Nipah virus disease is not a major outbreak and only a local occurrence.” On May 25, there was news that added further confidence on the situation. Body fluid samples collected from the bats that were found hanging in the well in the Sadik-Salih household turned negative for Nipah virus. The National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases at Bhopal confirmed this after testing the samples. Further, samples sent from cattle and pigs in the vicinity that were also sent tested negative for Nipah virus.

According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Nipah Fact Sheet, the virus can be transmitted to humans from animals (bats, pigs), and can also be transmitted directly from human-to-human. In 2001 it appeared in Bangladesh and same year the Nipah virus outbreak happened in Siliguri in West
Bengal in India. Of the 65 infected in Siliguri 45 persons died. “Human infections range from asymptomatic infection, acute respiratory infection (mild or severe) and fatal encephalitis,” states the WHO fact sheet. There are no specific drugs or vaccines for NiV infection. Intensive supportive care
is the recommended treatment. There is relief in Kerala that the infection did not spread into an outbreak and is now more or less under control. However, from where the infection started is the question that continues to be a mystery. It is not clear as to how, where and from whom the first infection happened. Merlin Tuttle, American ecologist, founder & executive director of Merlin Tuttle's Bat Conservation told Mongabay-India in an email: “Virtually every animal species that has been carefully studied has some virus of potential risk to other species. In the past four decades, so-called ‘emerging diseases' have killed fewer than 20,000 people worldwide, and there is no more than unsubstantiated speculation for blaming even half of those deaths on bats,” he added. He also said that bats in reality have one of the world's finest safety records when it comes to living with people. Hundreds of bat biologists, millions of people who eat bats, and the millions more who share cities with huge bat colonies are no less healthy than others.

Making a comeback after serving two years of a ban, the Yellow Brigade stood up to their reputation of being one of the best team in the cash-rich league. The Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side hunted down a competitive 179run target against one of the best bowling attacks of the current season with nine balls to spare. Watson was in devastating touch in his entire 57-ball innings, which comprised of 11 boundaries and eight massive hits into the stands. The Australian along with Suresh Raina (32) forged a 117-run matchwinning partnership to put Chennai ahead of their opponents.
Chasing 179, Chennai lost their first wicket in the fourth over as Opener Faf du Plessis (10) was caught and bowled by pacer Sandeep Sharma when the scoreboard was reading just 13 runs. Raina then joined Watson and the duo started slamming bowlers all round the park at will. The strike mostly remained with Watson and the Australian all-rounder took advantage beautifully by unleashing some ferocious shots. Soon the duo helped their team get past the 100-run mark in the 12th over and just after that Watson, who was looking at his best, hammered Sandeep to 27 runs in his final over. Trying to join the party, Raina miscued while trying to pull a short ball from Carlos Brathwaite knicked his gloves which landed in wicketkeeeper’s hand. The southpaw’s 24-ball knock was laced with three boundaries and one six. The fall of wicket brought in Ambati Rayudu (16 not out) who followed the same

Dr C L Patel, eminent educationist, no more
BY A STAFF WRITER r C L Patel, the third chairman of Charutar Vidya Mandal (CVM)–the oldest, richest and biggest educational trust of Central Gujarat--died in Vallabh Vidyangar in central Gujarat on May 27 after prolonged illness. The 83-year-old veteran academician was in virtual control of the education sector in Vallabh Vidyanagar, a prestigious education hub, for more than 20 years. He had also headed the Federation of Self-Financed Technical Institutes of Gujarat. It was only in February this year that Patel had lost the CVM chairmanship, his first defeat in a poll battle against present chairman Bhikhu Patel. The family members said that the octogenarian, who had suffered severe cardiac arrest and later kidney infection, had stopped consuming food for the last one week. He died of multiple organ failure in the morning. A mechanical engineer from BVM engineering college– Gujarat’s oldest--Patel’s annual trips to the US and UK, where his family of two sons and four daughters is based, resulted in dollars and pounds trickling in from NRIs, especially the Gujarati diaspora, at the CVM-managed educational institutes in Vallabh Vidyanagar. CVM manages around 50 educational institutes starting from kindergarten to postgraduate level and research institutes in Vallabh Vidyanagar and satellite township New Vallabh Vidyanagar. In fact, for 24 years when he served as CVM, Patel did not take home a single penny as salary. “When he took over as chairman in March 1994, CVM was under a debt of Rs 25 million. But he started raising money by undertaking annual overseas trips to raise donations. He would not even claim any travel expense from the trust for this. In all these years, he made more than 30 trips to the US and the UK but did not ask for a single penny from the trust. Now, asset values of institutes which he built has grown and he has left behind close to Rs 3 billion as fixed deposit for CVM,” said Shailesh Patel. Patel, who was a fan of Dev Anand’s hairdo during his college days, was mostly seen in white dress since the time he joined the erstwhile Gujarat Electricity Board. He left this job at the age of

Chinmaya Mission makes Mother’s Day memorable
Indian hiker falls to death from cables
Asish Penugonda
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Chinmaya Mission Chicago, represented by Badri (Willowbrook), Yamunotri (Grayslake), and the City Center (Chicago Downtown) had its annual Mother’s Day Celebrations on May 13. The event was open to all and was held at the Badri center in Willowbrook, IL. In the weeks prior, the fathers began planning with full dedication and enthusiasm. Volunteers and donations were sought, logistics planned, and most importantly, menus created. Volunteers pitched up tents and set up temporary kitchens. On May 13, the good cheer of everyone wishing “Happy Mother’s Day!” put a bright smile on all the mothers coming to Badri that morning. As the food preparations began in full swing outside, mothers and children assembled inside the shrine to offer their prayers. Jitendra Nayar Swapna Nayar conducted the puja, while Swami Sharanananda
C
reminded the audience, especially children, about the selfless and universal love of a mother. After the puja, children from all three centers entertained the audience with bhajans and dance, and performed a skit on Mother India and her sons, Bhagavan Adi Shankara and Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda. After the feast to the eyes and ears, it was time to taste the delicious food the fathers had prepared for all. The fully vegetarian fare ranged from Indian to international, from savory to sweet, and was a nonstop mouth-watering delight to the taste buds. After rounding off the meals with paan and tea, the crowds danced to the favorite tunes which were accompanied by the excellent dhol. Children set up bake sale and henna stalls, while adults organized book and flower sales, and donated the proceeds to the Mission.
About 1,500 people attended the free event on this pleasant spring day and helped make it a grand success. Chinmaya Mission Chicago was established in 1979 as a major center for religious education, culture, and tradition in Chicagoland. Currently, with its 3 centers, it serves about 500 families in the Chicagoland area, with nearly 1,000 children attending Bala Vihar. The Mission also offers classes for young adults and scriptural study groups for adults. Bala Vihar weekly classes start for children from age 4, and values are imparted through stories from puranas, quizzes, games and crafts. Families also engage in many activities from bhajans and chanting to yoga to festival celebrations. Retreats are conducted through the year and summer camps in June and July. As Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda said: “Children are not vessels to be filled, but lamps to be lit.”
BY A STAFF WRITER REMONT, CA -- Asish Penugonda, an Indian American resident of New York, was identified as the hiker who fell to his death from the cables on Half Dome in California’s Yosemite National Park. Driving school owner pleads guilty to fraud
A
BY A STAFF WRITER AN RAMON, CA -- An Indian American businessman from San Ramon, Calif., has pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit bribery and identity fraud, US Attorney from the Eastern District of California McGregor W. Scott has announced. Gill, 58, who owned Central Truck Driving School with locations in Fremont, Lathrop, Fresno and Salinas, conspired with employees of the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and others to fraudulently obtain commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) for Gill’s truck school students and others who did not take or pass the written or the behind-the-wheel driving examinations. The fraud happened between April 2012 and April 2015. Gill received money from those wishing to obtain a CDL and, in turn, paid money to the DMV employees, who would access the DMV’s database to alter records indicating that the individuals had passed tests when, in fact, they had not passed them or, in some instances, taken any examination at all. Gill is scheduled to be sentenced by US District Judge Garland E. Burrell Jr. on July 13.

I’ll always do what’s right: Kareena Kapoor Khan
Kajol joins ‘The Incredibles’ family
A
ctress Kajol has lent her voice to the character of Helen Parr, Elastigirl, for the Hindi version of Disney.Pixar’s Incredibles 2. “Incredibles 2 brings to us a heartwarming tale of a family that is like us. But yet they are different. There were so many moments in the story that I could relate with and I knew I had to join the fun,” Kajol said in a statement to IANS. The sequel picks up right after the 2004 original, with Craig T. Nelson returning as the voice of Bob Parr, Holly Hunter as Elastigirl and Samuel L. Jackson as Frozone.
M
arriage and motherhood have had no bearing on Kareena Kapoor Khan’s choice of films and roles, and never will. From slimming down to a size zero for her film to walking the ramp with a baby bump, the actress, who comes from Bollywood’s famed Kapoor family, has always made a statement. Asked if she would rethink before signing a film or before appearing in a dance number being a mother now, Kareena told IANS here: “No really, I mean there is nothing wrong with song and dance. It is not derogatory. We come from a film family and our films are known for song and dance...”
Taapsee Pannu to star in short film
A
ctress Taapsee Pannu will be seen in a short film titled Nitishastra and she says that her love for telling tales and being a part of some great stories made her say “yes” to the project. “For the love of telling and being a part of some great stories, here is my first ever attempt to be a part of a short film. All because of this man whose vision and story made me say ‘yes’ to it instantly, Congratulations Kapil Verma. Nitishastra Out for you all to see on. June 4, 2018,” Taapsee tweeted alongside her first look from the short film. The film, a family drama, is directed by Kapil Verma and is presented by Royal Stag Barrel Select Large Short Films — a digital platform. Verma thanked Taapsee for saying an “instant yes” to the film.
We don’t value our soldiers, says John
A
ctor John Abraham, who is celebrating success of his recently released film Parmanu - The Story of Pokhran, has said that “we don’t value soldiers of our country”. John was interacting with media along with director Abhishek Sharma after success of “Parmanu” this week in Mumbai. Talking about soldiers of the country who deal with difficulties in their life, John said: “I always say that they are the real life heroes and we are just reel life heroes. “I think they should not face any kind of difficulties. They protect us on boarders and here by sitting in air conditioned room, we complain about petty issues in life.”
‘I have never gone for fame or stardom’
A
ctress Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, who has completed a decade-long journey in the Hindi film industry, says she chooses good work over fame and stardom. The daughter of actor-producer Anil Kapoor ventured into the world of filmmaking in 2005 as an assistant director for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie Black. She made her acting debut two years later in Saawariya. Ever since her debut she has featured in over a dozen films comprising commercially successful ones like Khoobsurat, Neerja and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. Asked if she feels that stardom comes with a price tag, Sonam told IANS here: “I have never gone for fame or stardom. I have always gone for good work. So when you are not seeking something out, there is no price tag attached to it. It just comes naturally.”

Ranbir’s ‘Sanju’ act is short of breath A cruel joke told in the form of a psychedelic fable replete with visuals of Sanju baba aka Ranbir, high on drugs, so high that he can’t tell the difference between a laugh and a cry SUBHASH K. JHA, MUMBAI

verything seems to be a joke in the eagerly awaited trailer of Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju, based on the life of Sanjay Dutt. A cruel joke told in the form of a psychedelic fable replete with visuals of Sanju baba aka Ranbir Kapoor, high on drugs, so high that he can’t tell the difference between a laugh and a cry, or a mangalsutra and a toilet seat. In a sequence meant to be deafeningly shrill in its hysterical repudiation of a traumatic marriage, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja shrieks for her missing mangalsutra, and her high-as-a-kite husband drapes her neck with a toilet seat. In the trailer, Toilets occur twice it seems the in the longish trailer. senior Dutt The second time we The poster of the film Sanju. ‘Veere Di...’ banned in Pak over vulgarity NEW DELHI: Bollywood film Veere Di Wedding, starring stars like Kareena Kapoor Khan and Sonam Kapoor in a story of four girls, has been banned in Pakistan because of “vulgar dialogues and obscene scenes.” Danyal Gilani, Chairman, Central Board of Film Censors (CBFC), told IANS via social media: “Members of the CBFC unanimously decided to not allow the film for public exhibition in the cinemas as its content flouts the Censorship of Film Code 1980.” The movie was screened for the CBFC in Pakistan this week. According to trade sources, the movie was deemed unfit for exhibition due to “vulgar dialogues and obscene scenes”. —IANS
I really want Sanjay Dutt to like me: Ranbir MUMBAI: Actor Ranbir Kapoor, glimpses of whose portrayal as Sanjay Dutt in the trailer of Sanju has left the audience asking for more, says he really wants the senior actor to like him and his work. Ranbir interacted with the media at the trailer launch of Sanju with Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Rajkumar Hirani, Vidhu Vinod
Chopra, Sonam Kapoor, Dia Mirza and Vicky Kaushal. Asked how he felt portraying various phases of Sanjay’s life, Ranbir said: “When I was a child, I had a poster of Sanju sir on the wall of my cupboard, and through this film, I am in his shoes. I think in my life, I really want Sanju sir to like me.”
Paresh thinks he was destined to play Sunil Dutt MUMBAI: Veteran actor Paresh Rawal, who turned a year older on May 30, has said that he feels he was destined to play the role of the late Sunil Dutt in the film Sanju. He says he had once received a letter on his birthday, and it was penned by Sunil Dutt, father of actor Sanjay Dutt on whose life the Rajkumar Hirani directorial is based. Paresh said: “There is a very special connection of Sunil Dutt with me. Back in 2005 on the May 25, I was doing some patchwork in Mum-
bai for Deewane Huye Paagal, I went to a hotel as I landed from the US to make a call to my home when my wife Swaroop said Dutt saab had sent me a letter. I asked ‘Whose?’ She said, ‘Sunil Dutt saab’. “I was like, ‘Why would he write a letter to me?’. She said, ‘For your birthday’. I said my birthday is on May 30, why would he write a letter five days before. Straight cut to January 2, 2017, when I was at the narration of Sanju at Rajkumar Hirani’s house, I got a call from Swaroop asking me what to do of the letter of Dutt saab in the drawer... amazing connection.
Anushka’s character inspired by film’s writers MUMBAI: The mystery around actress Anushka Sharma’s role in Sanju was unravelled as director Rajkumar Hirani revealed that her character as a biographer is modelled on himself and Abhijat Joshi, who have co-written the film. Hirani told the media: “To showcase a biopic like this, you have to
compress few parts into one. Similarly, Anushka Sharma’s character is derived from myself and Abhijat. She is playing a biographer from London, and she comes to India. Sanjay wants her to write a book on him whereas she doesn’t want to. —IANS
‘Kaala’ trailer proves Rajinikanth is serious about ‘netagiri’ SUBHASH K. JHA, MUMBAI
R
ajinikanth, the superstar is alive and kicking in the trailer of his new film, rather racially referred to as Kaala. Kaala Rajinikanth, it seems, is the son of the soil. Dark (kaala) thoughts are vanquished as he seethes against those who toil to torment the farmer. He rages against the landlord played by Nana Patekar, who it is quite clear from the trailer’s first shot, is a formidable adversary for our hero. Rajinikanth not only plays the hero of the farmers a la Aamir Khan in Lagaan without the dhoti, he also takes on Nana as only he can. Interestingly, Nana plays a nuanced, scholarly adversary. So we can safely assume that this time Rajinikanth’s herogiri won’t be offset by plain unalloyed evil. This is a
Megastar Rajinikanth. (Photo: IANS)
more complex villain. Nana addresses the masses and refuses to be a snarling lip-curling villain. That he insisted on learning the Tamil language from scratch for this part is a
measure of the actor’s diligent commitment to getting it right. We can safely assume the confrontational episodes between Nana and Rajnikanth will give a centrifu-
gal force to what otherwise looks like a film designed to exploit the plight of farmers by pinning their exploitation to a suave refined adversary. “To you, land is power. To us, (the masses), it is life,” says Rajinikanth to Nana. Why do I feel Nana would still get more applause than the hero in every state barring Tamil Nadu? Is the tenor of the trailer to blame for this unintentional leaning towards the wrong side? At one point, Nana’s Maharashtrian character refers to Rajinikanth as ‘Raavan’. This is a subversive reading of the Ramayan popular in the south wherein Raavan is interpreted as a scholar and a nobleman who was destroyed by his passion for Sita. Speaking of Rajini’s women, there is Easwari Rao as Rajinikanth’s “cutely bucolic” wife.
