Deeply concerned about India-China border issue : US Congressman Krishnamoorthi
Over the past few months, top American lawmakers have expressed their concerns over blatant Chinese incursions.

@hiindia
HiIndia Newsdesk An Indian-American Congressman has urged China to end its military provocations of India and pursue a diplomatic resolution to the tense border standoff in Ladakh. Raja Krishnamoorthi said this following a classified briefing on the issue by the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, of which he is the first and only IndianAmerican member. The committee’s meeting was the first ever on the issue. “I am deeply concerned about this issue, which is why I authored a bipartisan resolution overwhelmingly approved by the House urging China to end its military provocations of India and to pursue a diplomatic resolution,” Krishnamoorthi said. “I will continue to closely monitor this dispute until it is fully resolved,” he said. Earlier Thursday, Lisa Curtis, deputy assistant to the US president, told a top American think-tank the US is encouraged by India’s strong yet responsible approach to the Chinese aggression.

US Attorney General William Barr under fire for comparing Covid lockdown with slavery
HiIndia Newsdesk Attorney General William Barr drew sharp condemnation Thursday for comparing lockdown orders during the coronavirus pandemic to slavery. In remarks Wednesday night at Hillsdale College in Michigan, Barr had called the lockdown orders the “greatest intrusion on civil liberties in American history” since slavery. Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., the No. 3 House Democratic leader, told CNN that Barr’s remarks were “the most ridiculous, tone-deaf, God-awful things I’ve ever heard” because they wrongly equated human bondage with a measure aimed at saving lives. “Slavery was not about saving lives. It was about devaluing lives,” Clyburn said. “This pandemic is a threat to human life.” This is not the first occasion that Barr has condemned stay-at-home orders.
US-China Investment At Nine Year-Low Amid Bilateral Tensions
US-China Investment: Investment, both direct investment by companies and venture capital flows, between the two countries fell 16.2% to $10.9 billion in January-June from the same period a year earlier .
HiIndia Newsdesk Hong Kong: Investment between the United States and China tumbled to a nine-year low in the first half of 2020, hit by bilateral tensions that could see more Chinese companies come under pressure to divest US operations, a research report said.
Floods and destruction as storm Sally moves north
Investment, both direct investment by companies and venture capital flows, between the two countries fell 16.2% to $10.9 billion in January-June from the same period a year earlier - also hurt by the coronavirus pandemic, according to figures from consultancy Rhodium Group and the National Committee on US-China Relations, an NGO. That's a far cry from half-yearly totals of nearly $40 billion seen in 2016 and 2017. Flows are unlikely to recover this year, regardless of the outcome of the U.S. presidential election, the report said, as "systemic concerns driving caution on Chinese investment
"Not Fair"
Congressional aides say it is unlikely that Congress would agree to a stand-alone bill to assist airlines when so many other sectors are struggling and seeking assistance.a
HiIndia Newsdesk Storm Sally has brought heavy rain and flooding to the Carolinas and Georgia, as it continues its path of destruction north from the US Gulf Coast. It has already battered Florida and Alabama with rain and storm surges, downing power lines, turning roads into rivers and leaving homes submerged. One person was killed, and hundreds of thousands are without power. Sally has now weakened to a post-tropical cyclone, but meteorologists warn that tornadoes are still possible. "It was an unbelievably freaky right turn of a storm that none of us ever expected," he told the Washington Post.
in high technology, critical infrastructure and personal assets will not subside." Citing national security risks posed by Chinese technology firms, US President Donald Trump's administration has sharply expanded actions to hobble Chinese companies. This has included putting telecoms giant Huawei Technologies Co Ltd on its trade blacklist, threatening similar action for Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp and ordering TikTok owner ByteDance to divest the short-form video app.
US Airlines Approach White House For Bailout Funds Amid Pandemic HiIndia Newsdesk
Washington: White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows met with major airline chief executives on Thursday as the industry braces for thousands of job cuts in two weeks, and urged lawmakers to embrace a $1.5 trillion coronavirus aid package proposed by a bipartisan congressional group and endorsed by US President Donald Trump. Meadows told reporters "if (House) Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi was willing to move a bill to keep people from being laid off in the airline industry that's stand-alone, that the president would certainly support it." But congressional aides say it is unlikely that Congress would agree to a stand-alone bill to assist airlines when so many other sectors are struggling and seeking assistance. "The needs have only grown. Some of the needs for the small businesses,
needs for restaurants, needs for transportation and the rest," Pelosi said Thursday. Other transportation sectors are also seeking billions of dollars in new bailout funds, including public transit, bus companies and the Amtrak passenger rail service. Meadows said the administration had examined executive action options, all of them less than ideal. Airlines did not offer a new proposal but again made the case that helping avert airline job cuts was one good reason to pass a broad coronavirus relief bill. After the meeting with Meadows, American Airlines Chief Executive Doug Parker said it was "not fair" that thousands of airline workers were about to be laid off.

Dubai Suspends Air India Express Flights Till October 2 For Bringing "Covid-Positive" Passengers HiIndia Newsdesk
HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: A Pulwama-style terror strike was averted by the Indian Army with the recovery of 52 kg of explosives on Thursday in Kashmir’s Karewa area which is not very far from the site of last year’s dastardly attack, Army officials said here. They said the location where the explosives were recovered was near the Jammu and Kashmir highway and around 9 KM from the spot of the Pulwama attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed. “We have averted another Pulwama-type attack,” said an Army official.
Home Minister Amit Shah discharged from AIIMS after five days
HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who recently recovered from COVID-19 and was admitted to AIIMS for a complete medical checkup, was discharged on Thursday evening, officials said. He was admitted to the premier hospital on September 12. The home minister has been discharged from AIIMS, an official said. Earlier in the day, Shah had addressed an event in his constituency Gandhinagar in Gujarat through video conference. On August 2, Shah, 55, had said on Twitter that he had tested positive for COVID-19. He had undergone treatment at Medanta Hospital and was discharged after he recovered from the disease.
New Delhi: The Dubai Civil Aviation Authority has suspended Air India Express flights till October 2 for allegedly bringing passengers with Covid-positive certificates twice during the last couple of weeks, senior government officials said on Friday. As per the UAE government rules, each passenger travelling from India needs to bring an original Covid-negative certificate from RT-PCR test done 96 hours prior to the journey. "A passenger, who had a Covid-positive certificate dated September 2, travelled on Air India Express' Jaipur-Dubai flight on September 4. A similar incident had happened with a passenger on one of the airline's other Dubai flights previously," said one of the officials. Therefore, the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority has suspended Air India Express flights from September 18 to October 2, the officials stated. Both the incidents of passengers flying with Covid-positive certificates to Dubai from India on Air India Express flights happened during the last couple of weeks, the officials noted. When asked about this matter, Air India Express said it is focusing on reducing the hardship of the passengers and it plans to operate its four Dubai flights, scheduled to operate from India on Friday, to Sharjah instead.
India readies for QUAD and 2 plus 2 dialogues, China is elephant in the room
The QUAD dialogue is an informal tie-up between democratic countries that share military logistics support, inter-operability through exercises and information and are committed to keep the Indo-Pacific sea lanes of communication free from artificial constructs and constraints.
HiIndia Newsdesk United States, India, Australia and Japan are in conversation to decide the venue and date of QUAD security dialogue next month, which will be followed by the 2 plus 2 dialogue between India and US here. As of now, Japan is an option for the QUAD dialogue or both QUAD and 2 plus 2 dialogues could be held back to back in New Delhi late next month.
The QUAD dialogue is an informal tie-up between democratic countries that share military logistics support, inter-operability through exercises and information and are committed to keep the Indo-Pacific sea lanes of communication free from artificial constructs and constraints. The QUAD dialogue will be held in person between US secretary of state Mike Pompeo, Indian external affairs minister S Jaishankar, Japanese foreign minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Australian foreign minister Marise Payne. The ministers are guided by the leadership of the four countries who share personal rapport and global visions for peace. The delay in the date and venue is due to the change of government in Japan with prime minister Yoshihide Suga taking over from ailing Shinzo Abe.
Tata Projects will construct the $117m (£90m) building in the heart of the national capital, Delhi. It will replace the existing colonial-era complex and is expected to be completed by 2022, when India celebrates 75 years of independence. Critics say the government should be spending the money on controlling the coronavirus pandemic. India now has more than five million confirmed cases - the world's secondhighest tally. The country has also reported more than 80,000 deaths from the virus so far. But the government says a new parliament building is needed as the current one dates back to the 1920s and shows signs of "distress and over-use".
BJP ally Akali Dal’s Harsimrat Kaur Badal quits ministry over ‘anti-farmer’ bills
BJP ally Shiromani Akali Dal’s lone Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal resigned on Thursday to protest the Centre’s farm sector reforms, calling the Narendra Modi government “anti-farmer” on a day the ruling party marked the Prime Minister’s birthday by projecting him as a messiah for peasants and the poor. That Harsimrat, the food processing minister, would resign was announced in the Lok Sabha by her husband, Akali chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, when two of the bills were being debated in the Lok Sabha. Harsimrat, who was in the House, tweeted after former Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir’s announcement: “I have resigned from Union Cabinet in protest against anti-farmer ordinances and legislation. Proud to stand with farmers as their daughter and sister.” During the debate, Sukhbir, whose party is primarily based in the agriculturerich Punjab, said the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill and the Farmers’ (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill would “destroy” the 50 years of hard work put in by successive governments in the state and farmers to build the agriculture sector.

Indian-origin FB worker quits, Indian-American Pleads Guilty slams it for ‘profiting off hate’ In USD 17-Million Bank Fraud Rajendra Kankariya, 61, pleaded guilty by video conference before US District Judge Susan D. Wigenton to committing wire fraud affecting a financial institution.
Rajendra Kankariya faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a fine of USD 1 million.
HiIndia Newsdesk Seattle: An Indian-origin Facebook engineer Ashok Chandwaney has quit the company, accusing the social network of "profiting off hate" in the US and globally. Chandwaney who worked at Facebook for more than five years slammed the social media giant for its inability to combat the spread of hate speech and misinformation and incitements to violence on its platform. "I'm quitting because I can no longer stomach contributing to an organization that is profiting off hate in the U.S. and globally," Chandwaney wrote in a Facebook post this week. Chandwaney wrote about the genocide of Rohingyas in Myanmar and a militia group's post calling for armed civilians to enter Kenosha, Wisconsin, during the Jacob Blake protests. "Violent hate groups and far-right militias are out there, and they're using Facebook to recruit and radicalize people who will go on to commit violent hate crimes. So where's the metric about this?" he wrote. Following a shooting that left two people dead, Facebook finally pulled down the Kenosha militia post. Zuckerberg blamed an "operational mistake" by the third-party contractors and reviewers who failed to remove the Kenosha Guard militia Page and Event prior to the shooting in Wisconsin in the US that left two dead last month. Last month, four rights groups claimed that the social networking giant played a role in the 2017 violence in Myanmar that forced hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas to seek refuge in Bangladesh. The rights groups demanded that Facebook help the Rohingya refugees to get justice. "Facebook is choosing to be on the wrong side of history," Chandwaney said in his resignation letter.
HiIndia Newsdesk Wa s h i ng ton : A n In d i an American president of a nowdefunct New Jersey-based marble and granite wholesaler has admitted his role in scheming to defraud a bank in connection with a USD 17 million secured line of credit, a US Attorney has said. Rajendra Kankariya, 61, pleaded guilty by video conference before US District Judge Susan D. Wigenton to committing wire fraud affecting a financial institution. He faces a maximum penalty
of 30 years in prison and a fine of USD 1 million. Kankariya is scheduled to be sentenced on January 18. According to court documents, from March 2016 through March 2018, Kankariya, the president and part owner of Lotus Exim International Inc, conspired with other LEI employees to obtain from the bank a USD17 million line of credit by fraudulent means. The bank extended the line of credit believing it to have been secured in part by LEI's accounts receivable. In reality, Kankariya and his conspirators fabricated or inflated many of the accounts receivable, ultimately leading to LEI defaulting on the line of credit, prosecutors alleged.

Responding to the rise in infections, Newcastle City Council leader Nick Forbes said: "The evidence we've found from local testing is that it's spreading in three main areas - in pubs, in people's homes and in grassroots sports." Meanwhile, the BBC understands new local lockdown restrictions are to be introduced in most of Lancashire, with the exception of Blackpool. An announcement on measures in parts of northwest England is expected from the government later on Friday. Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson told the Liverpool Echo "we fully expect" additional restrictions as infection rates in the city have risen above 100 per 100,000 of population.

"We have a very serious situation unfolding before us," he said. He was speaking as the number of confirmed infections worldwide crept towards the 30 million mark. the region," he told reporters. Mr Kluge said the figures "should serve as a wake-up call for all of us". Hospital admissions and deaths have not yet seen a similar rise, although Spain an d Fr an c e are seeing an upward trend. While younger people - who are less likely to be severely impacted if they are infected - currently make up the largest proportion of newly recorded coronavirus cases, there are fears of many more cases of serious illness if the virus spreads to older and more vulnerable groups. According to the WHO, there have been five million confirmed cases and more than 228,000 fatalities across Europe since the pandemic began.

hen asked about these aforementioned terms, the actor said, "I don't subscribe to such terms. This is your Twitter trending culture. I believe every individual, be it an insider or outsider, has his/ her own battles to fight. Whether you are gracious about it or bitter, it's your decision, but you have to fight this battle." He added, "Every person has to prove a point, either you complain about it or put your head down and bloody do your job. I am clear I have come here to do my job, and I will do it well." He also shed light on how he too came from outside the industry. He stated, "I create my own standards. Did I come from outside the industry and make it on my own? Yes. It's a great example for people. Do I think people from the industry are gracious? They are damn bloody gracious. Are all of them gracious? Maybe not, but that exists everywhere in every industry." When asked about being bitter or cynical about others in Bollywood grabbing more opportunities or being bestowed with more chances than him, he answered, "Not at all. I am grateful that I created my own chances and had self-conviction. I give credit only to that. I can also sob, cry, beat my chest and say I have been wronged, but that's not my narrative, that's not what I am made of. I am made of stronger mettle. For me, if you don't get chances, you create your own. If you don't belong to a world, you create your own world." Abraham, who has films like Welcome Back, Madras Cafe, Force 2, Dishoom, Parmanu, Satyameva Jayate, and Batla House behind him, is now gearing up for Attack, Satyameva Jayate 2, Ek Villain 2, and also a film tentatively titled Pathan.

A
n Alabama woman saved the life of a police officer who arrested her several times by donating a kidney to him. out to her and offered to donate one of her own kidneys to the cop who had arrested her numerous times. Jocelynn James, 40, has now been sober for years but once battled drug addiction so severe, she lost her car and job and used break-ins to fund her habit. She was arrested 16 times between 2007 and 2012, and was on the state's 'Most Wanted' list. One night, she saw her name flash on the TV as a "wanted" criminal and decided she was "sick of living that life". The next day, she turned herself over to authorities and stayed in jail for six months. After that she went to rehab for nine months, and today, Jocelynn James is helping other women who are in the same position as she once was. Police officer Terrell Potter, meanwhile, had been told he faced a seven to eight-year wait for a new kidney when Ms James saw his daughter's Facebook post. "I still can't tell you what the post says because I never read it fully," she said to VUMC Voice - the news magazine of Vanderbilt University Medical Center. "I just saw that the man needed a kidney and the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said 'you have that man's kidney.'

Couple Spends Rs. 2 Lakh Creating Cardboard Cutout Guests For Wedding
Harbhajan Singh's ROFL Post On A "Modern Thali" Will Make You Laugh Too

A
couple in the UK has spent nearly â‚š 2 lakh on life-size cardboard cutouts of their friends so they could all 'attend' their wedding. Romanee and Sam Rondeau-Smith, from Bramley, Guildford, had big plans for their July wedding, reports Metro News. They had to hit pause on their plans for a big ceremony thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, and then moved their wedding date to August 14. To make sure that all their friends and family could attend their special day, the couple spent over 2,000 pounds (more than â‚š 1.8 lakh) on cardboard cutouts, reports The Mirror. They were able to have 50 guests at their wedding without breaking any laws, due to the fact that their guests were all made of cardboard.
ormer cricketer Harbhajan Singh's hilarious post on Twitter has left thousands amused. His post on a modern "thali" shows the one thing that most meals today are incomplete without. A thali is the name given to a set meal that is served in restaurants or homes. The word can also refer to the plate in which the meal is served. While the dishes that come in a thali can change depending upon the region, there seems to be one common element in meals across the country. We are not talking about a food staple like rice, but, instead, of a device which has become a ubiquitous presence in the lives of many - a smartphone. The hilarious image shared by Harbhajan Singh shows a steel plate with a dedicated slot for a smartphone. It features a man eating his meal while browsing on the phone, which is placed alongside several dishes on the plate itself. 'Modern thali with space for phone," wrote Harbhajan Singh while sharing the pic, adding laughing-face emojis.

Google sets ‘Launch Night In’ event for September 30
Pixel 5, Chromecast "Sabrina" and a new Nest-branded smart speaker are expected to be announced during Google’s “Launch Night In” on September 30.
Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a (5G)
Google previously confirmed plans to launch a Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G this fall. Speaking of Pixel 5, this phone will be a premium mid-range device. It will be powered by a Snapdragon 765G processor along with 5G support. The phone is said to be crafted out of aluminum and feature a 5.8-inch 90Hz or 120Hz OLED display. The device is expected to get a dual-camera setup on the back. As far as the Pixel 4a 5G is concerned, this one will be a 5G-ready version of the Pixel 4a. It will reportedly have a plastic build and a 6.1-inch 60Hz display. Like Pixel 5, the Pixel 4a 5G will also feature a dual-camera setup on the back. The differences between camera optics are still unknown.
Google’s next Chromecast, codenamed “Sabrina”, would use Android TV and a Bluetooth remote.
New Chromecast Rumour mills are predicting a Chromecast refresh as well. Early leaks suggest the new Chromecast, internally known as “Sabrina”, will run Android TV and come with a remote. The new Chromecast is said to be drastically different from the previous generation Chromecast streaming devices. The current-generation Chromecast requires users to pull out their phones each time they need to pause their show, or skip to the next episode. With the new Chromecast rumoured to be coming up with a Bluetooth remote with a microphone and dedicated Google Assistant button will make it easy to control the content the TV.

mitabh Bachchan is set to come to Amazon Alexa. The trademark sound of Bachchan’s voice will be a paid upgrade, and will be added through the Alexa Skills interface. Once added, users can have Bachchan update them about the weather, offer jokes and even life advice, narrate poetry and also offer motivation, in a bid to entertain more users and rope them into the Alexa ecosystem. In a press statement issued upon the announcement, Puneesh Kumar, chief executive and managing director of Alexa India, said, “Mr Bachchan's voice is truly memorable for any Indian who has grown-up with Bollywood. Zipline and Walmart
to launch drone deliveries of health and wellness products
Z
Microsoft’s new Xbox Series S should offer impressive next-gen performance for its $299 price, but where does that leave the Xbox One X? According to Microsoft, the 4K-targeting Xbox from 2017 will still hold some advantages over the Series S — at least when it comes to running Xbox One X-enhanced current-gen games. “Xbox Series S was designed to be the most affordable next-generation console and play next-generation games at 1440p at 60fps,” Microsoft says in a statement to VGC. “To deliver the highest quality backwards compatible experience consistent with the developer’s original intent, the Xbox Series S runs the Xbox One S version of backward compatible games while applying improved texture filtering, higher and more consistent frame rates, faster load times and Auto HDR.” What this means is that most Xbox One games will run on the Xbox Series S at 1080p or below in backward-compatibility mode, though they will benefit from certain built-in hardware advantages like the faster SSD. Games with unlocked frame rates should also perform better than on the Xbox One S. But specific Xbox One X enhancements like higher resolution won’t apply.
Plans call for the program to start near Walmart headquarters in Arkansas early next year
ipline is partnering with Walmart for a new drone delivery operation in the US, the companies announced. The program is for on-demand deliveries of health and wellness products and will begin in a trial early next year near Walmart’s headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas. Zipline’s launch and release system allows for ondemand delivery in less than an hour, and operating from a Walmart store, can service a 50-mile radius. Earlier this year Zipline announced it was partnering with a hospital system in North Carolina to make contactless deliveries of medical supplies and personal protective equipment. And this year wasn’t the first time Zipline’s drones have been used for medical supply deliveries. In 2016, it launched the first national drone delivery system in the world to deliver blood to patients in remote areas of Rwanda. The company says it’s delivered more than 200,000 critical medical products to health facilities in multiple countries. The partnership with Walmart is the first step toward potential national-scale operations across the US. It will be interesting to see which of the two retail giants hyperfocused on drone deliveries— Walmart and Amazon— makes the quickest inroads. In August, Amazon got approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate as a drone airline in the US, which could mean the beginning of larger commercial operations for the retail behemoth.

Healthy diet, exercise during pregnancy could lead to healthier children
N
ew research shows improving the lifestyle of women with obesity during pregnancy could mean long-term cardiovascular benefits for their
children. The study, led by King’s College London and supported by the British Heart Foundation and Tommy’s charity, examined how an antenatal diet and physical activity intervention in pregnant women with obesity could positively influence the health of the women and their children three years after giving birth. Women who were given a diet and exercise intervention were compared to women in a control group, who made no changes to their lifestyle during pregnancy. Follow-up examinations three years after birth showed that the children born to the intervention arm of the trial had a lower resting heart rate of -5 bpm than children treated with standard care. A higher resting heart rate in adults is associated with hypertension and cardiovascular dysfunction. The study also showed that mothers in the intervention arm maintained a healthier diet three years after birth. While women reported lower glycaemic

I
n new research, a team of researchers has now explored the possibility of whether mindfulness with paced breathing reduces blood pressure. According to the American Stroke Association (ASA) and the American Heart Association (AHA), more than 100 million Americans have high blood pressure. Elevated blood pressure is a major avoidable cause of premature morbidity and mortality in the United States and worldwide due primarily to increased risks of stroke and heart attacks. Elevated blood pressure is the most important major and modifiable risk factor to reduce stroke. In fact, small but sustained reductions in blood pressure reduce the risks of stroke and heart attacks. Therapeutic
lifestyle changes in weight loss and salt reduction as well as adjunctive drug therapies are beneficial to treat and prevent high blood pressure. Mindfulness is increasingly practiced as a technique to reduce stress through mind and body interactions. In some instances, mindfulness includes paced breathing defined as deep and diaphragmatic with slow rates typically about five to seven per minute compared with the usual rate of 12 to 14. “One of the most plausible mechanisms is that paced breathing stimulates the vagus nerve and parasympathetic nervous system, which reduce stress chemicals in the brain and increase vascular relaxation that may lead to lowering of blood pressure,” said Suzanne LeBlang, M.D., a neuroradiologist, second and corresponding author, and an affiliate associate professor in FAU’s Schmidt College of Medicine. “Achieving sustained reductions in blood pressure of 4 to 5 millimeters of mercury decreases the risk of stroke by 42 percent and heart attacks by about 17 percent; so positive findings would have important clinical and policy implications,” added Hennekens.

Lead author Kathryn Dalrymple from King’s College London said: “This research shows that a lifestyle intervention in pregnant women, which focused on improving diet and increasing physical activity, is associated with improved cardiovascular function in the child at three years of age and sustained improvement in the mother’s diet, three years after the intervention finished. These findings are very exciting as they add to the evidence that pregnancy is a window of opportunity to promote positive health and lifestyle changes which benefit the mother and her child.”
roccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage can be counted as some of the most beneficial when it comes to preventing advanced blood vessel disease, suggests new research. The research published in the British Journal of Nutrition has found higher consumption of cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage, is associated with less extensive blood vessel disease in older women. Using data from a cohort of 684 older Western Australian women recruited in 1998, researchers from ECU’s School of Medical and

ith the coronavirus pandemic flushing in more uncertainty than ever in people’s lives, it has also added to the daily life stress and anxiety faced by an individual. Be it the fear of losing a job or the fear of contracting the virus, the lives of most people are filled with anxiety which is fueled by uncertainty. Here are five ways to deal with the stress and anxiety amid the pandemic, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. 1. Humans can manage the stress by managing their thoughts and by reframing the fear factor. The essence of stress management is controlling how one perceives demands. 2. The worst thought that one feeds the mind is that of predicting that only worst can happen to the individual. New Restorative Justice Community Court to 0pen in Englewood with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony BY COOK COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT NEWS RELEASE CHICAGO, IL – The Circuit Court of Cook County is holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, September 16, to launch its new Restorative Justice Community Court in the Englewood neighborhood, Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans announced today. This new court, the first on the city’s South Side, follows the success of the state’s first Restorative Justice Community Court in the North Lawndale neighborhood, launched in 2017. Both the Englewood court and a new Avondale community court open this week. The Englewood court will be held at the Salvation Army’s Adele and Robert Stern Red Shield Center, 845 W. 69th Street, and the ribbon-cutting is set for 9 a.m., Wednesday, outside the building’s entrance. Attendees should wear facial coverings and maintain social distancing. The community court resolves conflicts through restorative conferences and peace circles involving defendants, victims, family members, friends, others affected by the crime, and the community. Victims have the opportunity to directly address the defendant to express how they were hurt and what they need to heal from the crime. Defendants must repair the harm caused by their actions. This may involve community service, or other requirements. If one of the defendant’s problems is substance abuse, they also must go through a program to address that issue. Members of the community were extensively involved in the development and planning of the RJCC.

55 New York School Employees Test Positive For Coronavirus BY A STAFF WRITER NEWYORK, NY - Fifty-five New York City school staff have tested positive for coronavirus as the city enters the final week before students return to classrooms, Mayor Bill de Blasio said. De Blasio unveiled the case numbers Monday and took pains to emphasize they represent a small percentage — 0.32 percent, to be exact — out of roughly 17,000 tests. “Some people will test positive,” he said. “And those folks will immediately get support.” When Phoebe received multiple notifications from her Ring Video Doorbell and Floodlight Cam, she immediately opened the Live View on her Ring App just in time to protect her home. virus. Those numbers were released amid growing concerns from some teachers about safety and testing as they returned to school buildings to prepare for classrooms reopening Sept. 21.
Random testing will begin Oct. 1 under an agreement between the city and educator unions over schools’ return. But critics have questioned why all staff and students aren’t required to be tested. De Blasio, by contrast, offered a morerosy interpretation of testing numbers. He stressed the positive cases were a small percentage of the whole and outlined fast, free voluntary testing options for students and staff. This week, students and staff can get tests at 22 different “priority testing” sites in all five boroughs, de Blasio said. Test results will come back within 24 to 48 hours, he said. De Blasio also announced a multi-agency “COVID response situation room” that will track positive coronavirus cases in schools and take action. “This will be a constant effort,” he said.

BY A STAFF WRITER BOSTON, TX – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officers assigned to the International Cargo Port in Boston seized 20,400 counterfeit N95 respirator masks. On Wednesday, September 2, CBP Officers targeted a suspicious shipment arriving from Hong Kong. Officers detained the shipment of 43 boxes that appeared to contain counterfeit N95 respirator masks. The boxes were brought to the International Cargo Port where specialists from CBP’s Apparel, Footwear and Textile Center of Excellence and Expertise (CEE) determined the items to be counterfeit with an appraised value of $163,200. “Counterfeit personal protective equipment puts frontline workers and the general public’s health at risk,” said Michael Denning, Director of Field Operations for the Boston Field Office. “CBP Officers and our trade teams are trained to identify and intercept these dangerous goods before they can do harm to our communities and the American consumer.” Certain organizations are attempting to exploit the limited supply of and increased demand for some pharmaceuticals, personal protective equipment and other medical goods required to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Among other products, these criminals are smuggling and selling counterfeit safety equipment, unapproved COVID-19 test kits, unproven medicines and substandard hygiene products through the online marketplace. To combat these criminal activities, CBP is targeting imports and exports that may contain counterfeit or illicit goods. The products in targeted shipments often include false or misleading claims, lack required warnings or lack proper approvals.

ComEd Reminds Customers to Plan Ahead During National Preparedness Month BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL – Extreme weather and natural disasters have become a more frequent occurrence in Illinois and around the country. ComEd reminds customers during National Preparedness Month in September to be prepared for severe weather and other emergencies, especially when they cause power outages. The importance of being prepared was evident in August when a historic derecho brought a wave of destruction in a short period of time, causing severe and widespread damage. The storm pummeled the entire 11,000-squaremile ComEd region with hurricane force winds, 100 mile per hour gusts, 15 tornadoes including 13 in communities we serve, 4,300 lightning strokes and golf ball-sized hail. ComEd restored 540,000 customers within 24 hours, the fastest the company has restored more than 500,000 customers. “The safety of our customers, communities and employees is always our top priority,” said Terry Donnelly, ComEd president and COO. “As we see extreme weather more frequently, being prepared is critical to keeping our customers and our families safe.” To help customers plan and prepare for an
emergency, ComEd offers the following tips: Stay far away from storm-damaged electrical equipment, especially downed wires. Always assume downed wires are energized. Report a downed wire immediately by calling ComEd at 1-800-334-7661. Keep a flashlight with fresh batteries on each floor of your home. Identify an alternate location for you and/or your family in case of an extended power outage. Customers who rely on electricity to keep medicine refrigerated or medical equipment running should develop a backup plan for these needs during a power outage. If you own a backup generator, review the manufacturer’s instructions for its safe operation. Do not connect a generator directly to your home’s wiring. Never use a generator indoors or in any enclosed area.
Follow the advice of local emergency management officials. For more information about preparing for a tornado, visit the ComEd Powering Lives Network here. ComEd urges customers to contact the company immediately if they experience a power outage. Customers can text OUT to 26633 (COMED) to report an outage and receive restoration information, and can follow the company on Twitter @ComEd or on Facebook at Facebook.com/ComEd. Customers can also call 1-800 EDISON1 (1-800-3347661), or report outages at www.ComEd.com/ report. Spanish-speaking customers should call 1-800-95-LUCES (1-800-955-8237). ComEd has a mobile app for iPhone and Android® smart phones that allows customers to report power outages and manage their accounts; download the app at www.ComEd.com/app. Launched in 2004, National Preparedness Month is sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). During the month, FEMA and DHS encourage Americans to prepare for emergencies in all facets of their lives.
California Wildfires Smoke Create Haze Over New York City BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK CITY — As the damaging West Coast wildfires continue to burn more than 2,500 miles away, the impact of the blazes has reached New York and points east in the form of smoke high above the ground level that has created a haze over the city this week. While local weather officials forecast that the smoke won’t impact air quality, it has and will continue to affect the color of the sky and has created a bright orange tinge to the sun. According to the National Weather Service, satellites show the smoke to be at between 20,000 and 30,000 feet above the surface. The smoke has continued to travel east thanks to jet-stream winds, which, according to reports, is a ribbon of air located anywhere from 4-8 miles above land that can move as quickly as 275 miles per hour. When Phoebe received multiple notifications from her Ring Video Doorbell and Floodlight Cam, she immediately opened the Live View on
her Ring App just in time to protect her home. According to Dr. Robert Field, a climate specialist at Columbia University, long-range smoke events take place a couple of times a year and depend heavily on weather patterns. Earlier this summer for instance, a similar event took place around the Arctic due to fires in Siberia. However, the noticeable haze this occurred this week in New York City is considered to be
unusual. “The smoke often extends into the midwest, but rarely travels so far east,” Field wrote in an email to Patch on Wednesday, citing the number of fires currently burning in California, Oregon and Washington as the reason for the distance smoke has extended east. As far as the color of he sun locals may have witnessed this week, Field said that smoke particles are scattering more of the blue light, so what results is an extra-orange sun, but dimmer by the overall effect of the smoke. Michael Souza, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told the New York Times this week that a perfect recipe of weather conditions, including the jet stream, which has made its way east from the Great Lakes. Although the skies haven’t changed the deep shade of red-orange that have hidden the sun from residents of Northern California, the impact of the smoke has been visibly evident across New York and locations as far east as Washington.
Oakton Awarded $100,000 in Career and Technical Education Improvement Grants from Illinois Community College Board BY A STAFF WRITER DES PLAINES, IL – Oakton Community College has been awarded $100,000 in funding to support its continued improvement and innovation of Career and Technical Education (CTE) programming from the Illinois Community College Board. With the grant, Oakton will provide hightouch engagement to enhance relationships with students of color, mitigate barriers for these students and work to ensure they complete CTE credentials. CTE prepares individuals for highskill, in-demand employment that furthers Illinois’ global competitiveness. Oakton offers more than 150 different A.A.S. degrees and certificates in areas including engineering, nursing and law enforcement that are designed for students who are interested in short-term, specialized training to immediately enter the work force or to enhance and upgrade job skills. “Oakton plans on hiring a part-time coordinator to further increase the effort to enhance relationships with the College’s students of color, using emerging promising practices from the field and student data
collected through group discussion and engagement,” Marc Battista, associate vice president of Workforce Education and dean of Business and Career Technologies, said. “Students will have the opportunity to closely interact with this person as well as Oakton faculty, advisers and counselors to support academic success. Most importantly, students will form a community of support on campus that is responsive to their unique needs to augment their skills.” The community college system offers over 4,300 high quality, affordable CTE programs across the state. As many Illinoisans struggle with COVID-19 related job loss, community college CTE programs provide an avenue to high-skill, in-demand jobs across a number of career fields. “This funding will support student
success in high-need industries, including information technology and education,” Brian Durham, Ph.D., executive director of the ICCB, said. “The grants allow colleges to make a significant investment in advising, coaching and mentoring CTE faculty and students, at a time when the need for a connection between teachers and students is paramount.” Statewide, 21 community colleges received nearly $1.7 million in CTE improvement grant funds in 2020. Grant recipients can use the funds in one of three ways: to enhance student transitions, to provide student-centered support services, or to strengthen the CTE educator pipeline. CTE grants are funded through the federal Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act. The ICCB is the state coordinating organization for the Illinois Community College System – the third largest in the country and the leading public workforce development trainer in the state. BY A STAFF WRITER SEATTLE, WA. – An Indian American Facebook engineer, Ashok Chandwaney, has quit the company, accusing the social network of “profiting off hate” in the U.S. and globally. Chandwaney, who worked at Facebook for more than five years, slammed the social media giant for its inability to combat the spread of hate speech and misinformation and incitements to violence on its platform. “I’m quitting because I can no longer stomach contributing to an organization that is profiting off hate in the U.S. and globally,” Chandwaney wrote in a Facebook post this week. Chandwaney wrote about the genocide of Rohingyas in Myanmar and a militia group’s post calling for armed civilians to enter Kenosha, Wisconsin, during the Jacob Blake protests. “Violent hate groups and far-right militias are out there, and they’re using Facebook to recruit and radicalize people who will go on to commit violent hate crimes. So where’s the metric about this?” he wrote. Following a shooting that left two people dead, Facebook finally pulled down the Kenosha militia post. Zuckerberg blamed an “operational mistake” by the third-party contractors and reviewers who failed to remove the Kenosha Guard militia Page and Event prior to the shooting in Wisconsin in the U.S. that left two dead last month. Last month, four rights groups claimed that the social networking giant played a role in the 2017 violence in Myanmar that forced hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas to seek refuge in Bangladesh. The rights groups demanded that Facebook help the Rohingya refugees to get justice. “Facebook is choosing to be on the wrong side of history,” Chandwaney said in his resignation letter. “We continue to pass the buck with the Kenosha Guard failure being pinned on contract content moderators, who are underpaid and under-supported in their jobs – both of which are things Facebook could almost instantly fix if it so chose,” he said. “It seems that Facebook hasn’t found the business value to be had in aggressively pursuing the existing credible strategies to remove hate from the platform – despite pressure from civil society, our own employees, our own consultants, and our own customers via the boycott.
