US to host US-India trade policy forum

Obama cautions Sharif against raising nuclear tensions with new lowyield nuclear weapons; no direct involvement of US in Kashmir issue First lady to give $70mn for girls education in Pak WASHINGTON: US First Lady Michelle Obama has announced $70 million aid to educate girls in Pakistan, a USAID statement said. Michelle Obama “Building on Pakistan’s commitment to double education spending, the US will be investing $70 million to educate adolescent girls in Pakistan,” US First Lady Michelle Obama said on October 22 at a White House event she hosted for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s wife Kulsoom Nawaz. According to a statement, USAID’s Let Girls Learn in Pakistan programme will provide $70 million to new and ongoing USAID programmes benefitting more than 200,000 adolescent girls aged between 10 and 19 years.

ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

P

akistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif came to the US with a litany of complaints against India with the hope of getting an India type nuclear deal and involving Washington in the Kashmir issue. He got neither. Instead Sharif ended up giving President Barack Obama an assurance that Islamabad would take effective action against Lashkar-e-Taeba (LeT) and its affiliates responsible for the November 2008 Mumbai terror attack. Apparently concerned over Pakistan’s assertion that it has made lowyield nuclear weapons to bridge the gap for war that India had created through its cold-start doctrine, Obama also cautioned Sharif against raising nuclear tensions with new weapons. “Regarding Pakistan’s nuclear weapons program, the President stressed the importance of avoiding any developments that might invite increased risk to nuclear safety, security, or strategic

stability,” a joint statement said. However, Pakistan did manage to get a call for an India-Pakistan dialogue to resolve all issues including Kashmir included in a joint statement issued after Sharif met Obama in his Oval office in the White House on October 22. But in line with Washington’s hands off Kashmir policy, the joint statement expressing “concern over

violence along the Line of Control (in Kashmir)” noted “their support for confidence-building measures and effective mechanisms that are acceptable to both parties.” “The leaders emphasized the importance of a sustained and resilient dialogue process between the two neighbors aimed at resolving all outstanding disputes including Kashmir,” it said.

WASHINGTON: US Trade Representative Michael Froman will host the ninth ministerial-level meeting of the US-India Trade Policy Forum (TPF) here on October 29 to discuss how to expand trade and investment through forward-looking policy initiatives. The TPF provides the venue for evaluating progress that has been made on trade and investment issues between the US and India at the ministerial level, according to an official announcement. “I look forward to hosting Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for a productive meeting about bringing our countries into greater trade partnership,” said Froman. The US-India TPF is co-chaired by Froman and Sitharaman, and is the premier bilateral forum for the discussion and resolution of trade and investment issues between the US and India.

Trump will call Iran’s US doctors want e-cigarettes use curbed Ayatollah ‘Hey baby’! T IANS, WASHINGTON

WASHINGTON: US Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump would not call Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei the “Supreme Leader”. He would also put a stop to US meddling in Middle Eastern affairs because women there “don’t want freedom as evidenced by their desire to wear burkas or niqabs, which cover their faces. The real estate mogul and reality TV celebrity held forth on his approach to foreign policy Monday morning in Atkinson, New Hampshire, which holds the first primary to kick off the presidential contest. “I’ll say, ‘Hey baby, how ya doing?’ I will never call him the Supreme Leader,” Trump told a boisterous audience of about 1,200, according to CBS News. “And I’ll get along with him probably. And maybe not. And if he doesn’t get along with me, they got problems. We don’t.” Turning to the Middle East, Trump said, “With the women over there, they don’t have to wear the youknow-what,” Trump said. “And then I said, ‘Oh well that makes sense. That’s nice.’ Then, I saw women interviewed. They said, ‘We want to wear them. We’ve worn them for a thousand years. Why would anyone tell us?’ They want to.

he American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) has strongly recommended that the minimum age to purchase tobacco products — including ecigarettes — should be increased to 21 years nationwide. In a comprehensive set of policies announced on October 26, the AAP has stressed the need to protect youngsters from ill-effects of tobacco and nicotine.

“Tobacco use continues to be a major health threat to children, adolescents and adults,” said Karen M. Wilson from Children’s Hospi-

tal Colorado. “The developing brains of children and teens are particularly vulnerable to nicotine, which is why the growing popularity of e-cigarettes among adolescents is so alarming and dangerous to their long-term health,” Wilson said. The AAP has urged the US Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate e-cigarettes and other electronic nicotine delivery systems the same as other tobacco products.

70 pc Americans say crime is rising: Gallup IANS, WASHINGTON

What the hell are we getting involved for?” Trump also criticized his Republican rival Ben Carson, a noted neurosurgeon who is polling higher than him in Iowa. “I don’t believe those polls actually, because I see the people in Iowa -and I’m going to be there in two days,” Trump said. “But we’re doing really well it’s been great. He’s a nice guy but he’s never going to be able to make deals with China.” “By the way Carson is lower energy than [Jeb] Bush,” he added. “I don’t get it. I saw him being interviewed. He’s lower energy than Bush. He’s a nice guy....You know, these Chinese negotiators, they come in fierce, fierce.”

even in 10 Americans say there is more crime in the US now than there was 12 months ago, a recent Gallup poll said. The percentage of Americans who hold the perception of rising crime rose by seven points compared to 63 percent who said so in 2014, Xinhua reported. Only 18 percent say there is less crime and another eight percent say the level of crime has stayed the same, according to Gallup. Meanwhile, almost six in 10 Americans in 2015 say that crime is an “extremely” or “very” serious problem in the US, the second highest level in similar surveys conducted from 2000 to 2015, said Gallup. Another 35 percent of Americans

say the problem is “moderately” serious, the survey showed. However, Gallup said American’s perception of crime are not always at par with reality. According to Gallup, although government data over the past two

decades had pointed to declining violent crime rates, majority of Americans surveyed by Gallup still believed that crime had increased nationwide. Official data on actual crime rates in 2015 will come out next year.

he Kerala government will take legal steps against Delhi Police if it doesn’t accept that it erred in raiding the Kerala House in Delhi to check if beef was being served there, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said on October 28. Chandy told the media after a cabinet meeting that his government was waiting for a response from Delhi Police over its October 26 raid that triggered a huge row. Chandy said he had expressed the Kerala government’s anguish to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh. “Kerala House is not a private hotel. It’s the official building of the Kerala government,” he said. Following protests outside its premises, Kerala House removed beef curry from its menu after a little known group, Hindu Sena, lodged a police complaint that beef was served there, an official said. God has listened to your prayers,” Mukherjee told the 23-yearold when she called on him at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Sahitya Akademi breaks silence NEW DELHI: The Sahitya Akademi has said it was “deeply pained” over the “dastardly” murder of noted writer M.M. Kalburgi and other intellectuals and urged the writers to take back the awards they returned to denounce the Akademi’s silence and growing intolerance. “The Akademi strongly supports the writers’ right to freedom of expression in all languages of India and condemns any atrocities against any writer in the country in the strongest of words,” Akademi president Vishwanath Prasad Tiwari said in a statement.

On October 26, some 20 Delhi Police officers raided the Kerala House following a complaint that cow meat was being served in its canteen. Delhi Police insisted it was

no raid and they had done no wrong. Commissioner B.S. Bassi said on October 27 that police visit was in compliance with legal procedure. “We know it (Kerala House) is a government institution...but the call was such that we had to react. This relates to providing false information with intent to cause a public servant to use his lawful power to cause injury to another person.

Kerala MPs protest against police action NEW DELHI: The row over a ‘beef raid’ at Kerala House here intensified after parliamentarians from the state protested outside the official state house on October 27. The MPs wanted beef curry back on the menu at the Kerala House canteen. “This is an infringement on the rights of the people of Kerala. This is a property of people and government of Kerala. We condemn

this police action,” said MP A. Sampath. Another MP P.K. Sreemathi said: “This is an attack on federalism. The Centre should apologize.”

ens of thousands of people, including many women, stood in serpentine queues at polling stations since early October 28 to cast their ballot in the third phase of the staggered Bihar assembly elections. Around 12 percent polling was recorded in the initial hours in the assembly elections being held at 50 constituencies. Voters turned up at many polling stations in Bihar hours before the start of ballotting. “Initially queues were small. Now voters are standing in long queues outside polling booths,” said an official at the chief electoral office here.

Polling began at 7 a.m. in 50 of the 243 constituencies, including Maoist-affected areas, spread across six districts, officials said.

CBI director Anil Sinha said Chhota Rajan, who once operated out of Mumbai and was wanted in India for a series of serious crimes, was taken into custody on October 25 when he was travelling under a false identity — Mohan Kumar. Sinha said the 55-year-old gang-

ster was also involved in the killing of veteran Mumbai journalist J. Dey in Mumbai on June 11, 2011. Home Minister Rajnath Singh

thanked Interpol and the Indonesian government for nabbing Chhota Rajan, who began life as a black marketer of movie tickets before embracing murders, extortion, kidnappings and more. Chhota Rajan operated from Chembur and surroundings in Mumbai from the mid-1970s when he became a trusted henchman of Dawood Ibrahim. At some places, the electronic voting machines malfunctioned. Apart from that, it was a smooth exercise in a state notorious for election violence.

AMIT DASGUPTA, NEW DELHI

I

t is extraordinary how quickly we believe smart slogans. Advertising and marketing are based on the ability to getting subscribers hooked through language and packaging. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has understood this all too well. When he spoke of ‘acche din’, he struck an immediate chord through the contrast with the previous four years. Similarly, his call for Swachh Bharat and Digital India resonated across socio-economic classes. People were hooked. This was political marketing at its best. But marketing gurus are also aware that advertising is not a substitute for the product. Consumers look through gimmickry because man cannot live by slogans alone. The unexpected defeat of the Vajpayee government in 2004 that rode on the crest of the ‘India Shining’ wave ought to be a sobering reminder for the government. After 18 months of Modi’s government, for most Indians, barring the very rich, happy days continue to be illusory. The economy, which is poised to overtake China, and notch 7.5 percent GDP growth rate, owes much to falling oil prices and to a slowing down of the Chinese economy than to any economic reforms that have eased doing business in India. Taxation policies remain opaque and unpredictable and, thus, a clear disincentive for foreign investors. Even the bizarre retrospective tax, promulgated by the previous government, is yet to be amended. Furthermore, for the aam aadmi, food prices, whether of onions or pulses, continue to rise. Social sector spending has drastically fallen, especially in health and education. At an entirely different level, even the very social fabric of India stands threatened with ministers and polit-

outlined the tax incentives that foreign investors would enjoy should they decide to make in India. Consider, for instance, that Japan has offered a soft loan for $15 billion to finance India’s first bullet train on the condition that 30 percent of equipment, including coaches and locomotives, are bought from Japanese firms and manufactured in Japan. Undoubtedly, the financial assistance Japan offers would be linked to purchase of equipment from Japanese companies. More interesting is the fact that the bronze cladding for the memorial to Sardar

ical allies making hugely irresponsible statements and indulging in acts of gross intolerance towards minorities, Dalits and dissenters. Modi’s rise to the prime minister’s post has been dramatic and meteoric. The distinct lack of leadership in the Congress has been helpful and Modi is, undoubtedly, looking

at a second term. To achieve that, he most certainly needs to combine vision with strategy and decision making. If he would like India to emerge as an economic powerhouse, he needs to outline the roadmap as to how this would be achieved. Consider his flagship ‘Make in India’ program. The shift from

‘made’ to ‘make’ was meant to woo foreign investors to make India a manufacturing base. But neither quality assurance nor skill development received the urgency that making in India requires. For foreign investors, this is clearly a major drawback. Nor indeed has the government

Patel would be manufactured in China! Modi’s advocacy of transforming India into a manufacturing hub can be exciting and most certainly gets us all hooked. But the government has not backed its slogans with action, or vision with strategy. Over the past 18 months, the quality of life has not improved. When senior ministers and party functionaries label dissent as being ‘manufactured’ or ‘selective’ or ‘pseudo-secularism’, it only diminishes the government. Modi can protect the stature and dignity of his chair only through an unambiguous condemnation of the incidents that are dividing the people. To be perceived as a national leader, he needs to make the transition from Chief Minister to Prime Minister. (Amit Dasgupta is a former diplomat. Views expressed are personal.)

UN and India: A pictorial journey through history UNITED NATIONS : When the UN was but a glimmer in the eyes of Allied statesmen in 1942, pre-independence India’s involvement in the idea of a world body began with a representative of India, G.S. Bajpai, signing the “Declaration by the United Nations” in Washington while World War II rained death and destruction around the globe. The arm-in-arm journey of India and the international organization has been chronicled by India’s Permanent Representative Asoke Kumar Mukerjee in ‘India and The United Nations -- A Photo Journey: 1945-2015’, a volume of nuggets of historical facts and rare photographs culled from a trove of over 800,000. When the UN was born in 1945,

India was still a colony. But with its independence looming on the horizon and in a premonition of its global importance it became a full-fledged founding member of the organization. It was represented on UN flagpoles by a blue flag with the Union Jack and the Great Seal with the Star of India, which was replaced by the Indian Tricolor when India won its freedom in

1947. Enshrining the promotion of human rights was India’s significant contribution to the framing of the UN Charter, Mukerjee writes. The Charter was signed in San Francisco by Ramaswami Mudaliar, the leader of the Indian delegation to the UN, and V.T. Krishnamachari, who represented the princely states. The Charter came into force on Oct 24, 1945 creating the global body, and that day is celebrated as UN Day every year. Mukerjee traces the pioneering role of India at the nascent UN with New Delhi becoming one of the framers of the convention against genocide in a world reeling from its horrors. It was adopted by the first General Assembly session in 1946 London.

India was a full-fledged founding member of the UNO.

In a historic first, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, the sister of Jawaharlal Nehru, led the Indian delegation to that session — the only woman to do so. In 1953, she was elected president of the General Assembly, the first woman to hold the position.

In an instance of early support for China, India, then a member of the Security Council, voted to replace Taiwan with China as a permanent member. India’s long association with armed peace-keeping operations began in 1956.

US cop’s retrial begins for slamming Indian grandfather Former Madison Officer Eric Parker faces up to 10 years in prison for slamming down Sureshbhai Patel. His first trial ended with a hung jury IANS, WASHINGTON

A

s the retrial began of an Alabama police officer accused of slamming an Indian grandfather to the ground while taking a walk last February, prosecutors said they have good evidence on their side. Former Madison Officer Eric Parker faces up to 10 years in federal prison for slamming down Sureshbhai Patel on February 6, days after he had arrived from India to take care of his grandson. Patel who does not speak English was left partially paralyzed after the incident. Parker is charged with deprivation of rights under color of law. His first trial ended early last month with a hung jury as the jury split 10-2 in favor of acquittal. “Civil rights cases are important

to us. We feel like the evidence we have is good. The jury has video evidence they can see,” Robert Posey, first assistant US attorney for the northern district, was quoted as say-

ing by Alabama public radio. “We feel that these cases deserve resolution so that’s why we’re going to try it again,” he said. After meeting lawyers of both

sides behind closed doors, US District Judge Madeline Hughes Haikala on October 26 ordered that, unlike during the first trial, media will not be allowed to report or blog from the courtroom. Reporters will be allowed to take handwritten notes and report after they leave. The order is intended to stop witnesses from hearing what other witnesses have said to discourage false testimony, inaccuracies or collusion. Meanwhile, South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), an umbrella community organization, demanded justice for Sureshbhai Patel. It expressed the hope that the retrial is heard before a jury that truly represents the population of Madison, Alabama where one in ten residents speaks a language other than English at home.

His book, “Modern Romance” a sociological investigation into the dating and love lives of millennials -- earned him an advance in the

India opposes embargoes

India joins call to lift Cuba sanctions, says sanctions impact human rights IANS, UNITED NATIONS

I

ndia reiterated its unambiguous opposition to unilateral embargoes imposed by countries through their domestic laws as New Delhi voted on October 27 for a resolution calling for an end to the United States embargo against Cuba. The vote on the General Assembly resolution completely isolated the US with all its allies, except Israel, abandoning it. Of the 193 members of the UN, the other 191 voted for the resolution. Even though Washington resumed diplomatic relations with Cuba this year it left embargo in place and this was the 24th time the General assembly passed such a resolution. India “has consistently rejected the imposition of laws and regulations with extra-territorial impact and all other forms of coercive economic measures that hurt the progress and prosperity of the people the world over,” India’s Permanent Representative Asoke Kumar

India’s Permanent Representative to United Nations, Asoke Kumar Mukerji, addressing the United Nations General Assembly.

Mukerji told the General Assembly. “The continued existence of this embargo, in contravention of world opinion,” he added, “undermines multilateralism and the credibility of the United Nations itself.” Embargoes impacted the human rights of people as it affected their

Quake-hit Pakistan not to seek foreign aid

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid has said that the country would not seek international aid for the people affected by the powerful earthquake that killed nearly 250 people and displaced thousands of others. The earthquake on October 26 struck most parts of Pakistan but caused more damage in the northwestern parts of the country, officials said. Rashid said the government has the resources to deal with the situation and will not appeal for international aid. “We have all the required items and there is no need to call for foreign aid,” the minister told a news conference in Islamabad. The minister’s statement came after the international community offered assistance. Rashid, who accompanied Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to an area worst affected by the earthquake in

the northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on October 27, said Sharif personally reviewed the rescue and relief operations. He said the prime minister met the affected people and got briefings on damage and relief activities. The information minister said that banned groups would not be allowed to raise funds for the quake-affected people as these groups achieve their goals under the pretext of charity work. Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Major General Asghar Nawaz, said that all sensitive installations were completely safe. He confirmed that 248 deaths have been reported from different parts of the country so far while 1,665 people were injured. Civil and military rescue and relief teams are busy in different areas and the affected people are being provided food, blankets, tents and medicines, he added.

right to development, food and medical care, hitting women and children the hardest, he said. Mukerji praised Cuba for its “notable socio-economic and developmental achievements of the Cuban people, in particular the high HDI (human development

index) ranking of Cuba and its achievement of several MDGs (Millennium Development Goals)” before the deadlines despite the embargo. The US Senior Area Advisor for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Ronald D. Godard, pointed to the “historic measures” undertaken by the Obama administration to normalize relations with Cuba and said it was “unfortunate” that Havana had persisted in bringing the resolution again this year. Obama has called on Congress to lift the embargo as soon as possible and has taken executive action to facilitate many transactions involving Cuba, he said. “We do not expect Cuba or the United States to forget the past overnight,” he added. Although the Cuban embargo, first imposed in 1960, was the direct target of the resolution, the General Assembly used it to call for an end to all unilateral sanctions, a sentiment that India strongly associated itself with.

European Parliament seeks surveillance authority

STRASBOURG: The European Parliament, gathered for its plenary session in Strasbourg, adopted a resolution on October 27 demanding the creation of an European Union-level surveillance authority in order to reinforce the monitoring system for automobile emissions under fire since the breaking of the Volkswagen scandal. While British daily the Financial Times accused the European Commission to have closed its eyes since 2013 on the schemes of the German automaker, the European Parliament insisted in its resolution on the necessity for a full investigation and appropriate penalties against Volkswagen or any other parties guilty of fraudulent anti-pollution test results.

Edhi declines Modi’s donation IANS, ISLAMABAD

I

ndia born Pakistani social worker Abdul Sattar Edhi on October 27 refused a donation of Rs.10 million by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to his charity. “Edhi has thanked Modi and politely declined to accept his announced financial help,” the Dawn quoted Edhi Foundation spokesman Anwar Kazmi as saying. Bilquis Edhi, the co-founder of the humanitarian foundation, turned down the offer with thanks stating that the foundation rules do not allow any donations from government funds.

Addressing a press conference in Karachi, Sattar Edhi’s son Faisal Edhi thanked the Indian prime minister and clarified that taking funds from governments was against the foundation’s policy, adding that

he would be very pleased if the Indian prime minister spent the money for the welfare of deaf and mute citizens in India, The News International reported. Modi had announced the contribution to the charity on October 26 after the return of Geeta to India. “What the Edhi family has done is too priceless to be measured but I am happy to announce a contribution of Rs.10 million for their foundation,” Modi had tweeted. Found on a train that had crossed the border from India into Pakistani city of Lahore, Geeta remained in Pakistan under the care of the Edhi Foundation in Karachi.

‘Europe can accept thousands of migrants’ IANS, ROME

E

urope can take in hundreds of thousands of migrants provided there are common policies to ease the burden for border countries, Italy’s Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni has said. “Europe — with hundreds of millions of people — can accept hundreds of thousands of migrants” so long as there is a common policy, Gentiloni told Bloomberg TV. Over 613,000 migrants and refugees have crossed the Mediterranean this year to seek refuge in Europe. With winter approaching, more than a million are expected to arrive, most in Greece and Italy, which are the first countries of entry.

“The idea that EU border countries should solve 80 percent of the problem is out of touch with reality,” Gentiloni added. His comments came as European leaders at an emergency sum-

mit in Brussels agreed to shelter 100,000 more people in refugee reception centers in Greece and neighboring Balkan countries as the EU faces its worst refugee crisis since World War II.

o development of a new state capital has generated so much excitement as has Amaravati, whose foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 22. The backdrop in which Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated, the journey of the residual state from scratch, an experienced Chandrababu Naidu winning the public mandate, the selection of the Vijayawada-Guntur region for building the new capital, mobilization of the best expertise and experience for the project have all added to the hype. It’s a rebirth of sorts for Amaravati, an ancient city on the banks of the Krishna river in Guntur district. Historically, Amaravati was the capital of Satavahanas, the first great Andhra kings who ruled from 230 BC to 220 BC after the down-

BRIEFS Castration for child abusers: Madras HC CHENNAI: Dismissing a petition by a British national charged with child abuse, the Madras High Court has suggested to the central government to look into the option of castration as a punishment for such offenders. In a strongly worded judgment recently, Justice N. Kirubakaran said castration of child abusers would act as a deterrent and lead to “magical results”. He said that the suggestion of castration may seem to be barbaric but barbaric crimes should attract such punishments. The court dismissed the petition seeking quashing of the case, filed by the British national now based in London, accused of abusing a minor boy in New Delhi in 2011.

SC refuses to stay killing of stray dogs NEW DELHI: Disapproving the mass culling of stray dogs by the Thiruvananthapuram civic body, the Supreme Court on October 26 however refused to stay it and said the killing of the dangerous dogs and those inflicted with rabies should be guided by rules. Declining to pass an interim order putting on hold the killing by MCT, zthe court said that the killing of the stray dogs should be guided by the Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules, 2001.

fall of the Mauryan empire. An ancient centre of Buddhist learning, it boasts of Mahachaitya, the Great Stupa, with intricate carvings that depict the life and teachings of Lord Buddha, Buddhist sculptures and slabs with Buddhist inscriptions. By using the name Amaravati, Naidu managed to strike an emo-

tional chord especially with countries like Singapore and Japan, where Buddhism is the most widely practised religion. While Singapore has prepared three master plans for the Andhra capital and is ready to partner in its development, Japan has also come forward to contribute with its experience and technology.

VIJAYAWADA: If Andhra Pradesh made history by laying the foundation stone for new state capital Amaravati, Vijaya Dasami marked another significant development with Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao joining the event. Putting behind the bitterness that marked the Telangana movement and more recently over cash-for-vote scam, Rao accepted his Andhra Pradesh counterpart N. Chandrababu Naidu’s invitation to attend the ceremony. Undeterred by criticism from the opposition, KCR, as Rao is popularly known, went ahead with his participation in the event. He not only shared dais with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the select guests but his name also

figured in the foundation stone pylon, a move which drew flak from a section of leaders of Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP). This was KCR’s first visit to Andhra in many years. He never visited Andhra during the Telangana movement. At the height of the movement for a separate state, he minced no words in attacking Naidu and other leaders from Andhra.

popular tourist destination in Kerala, Thekkady has been named the “world’s top emerging destination” in the inaugural Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) CEO Challenge 2015. Thekkady, located in Idukki district and about 250 km from the state capital, shared the award with Albay province of the Philippines. The award was announced in Bangkok last week, a Kerala Tourism press release said here.

While Thekkady — just 114 km from the temple town of Madurai in Tamil Nadu — bagged the award in the second- and third-tier cities category, Albay received the honor in the category for regions, states and provinces. The PATA CEO Challenge is aimed at utilising the $500,000 award to develop and create a digital marketing campaign to showcase the destination to a global audience. Leading global travel site TripAdvisor, the PATA CEO Challenge 2015 partner, will provide its exper-

tise to developing the campaign. “The award will only increase our commitment to work further towards the growth of tourism in Kerala and development of our communities and the livelihoods of

our people while preserving our environment,” said Kerala Tourism Minister A.P. Anilkumar. The award will be presented in London on November 2, the opening day of the World Travel Mart.

Karnataka gropes in the dark as power blinks FAKIR BALAJI, BENGALURU

K

arnataka is groping in the dark again as a deficit southwest monsoon has plunged the state into a major power crisis due to poor hydel generation and demand outstripping supply over the last few months. With the state-run thermal plants at Raichur and Bellary in the northern districts and a private thermal plant at Udupi in the coastal district operating below capacity due to technical glitches, thousands of industries and small scale units across the state are reeling under prolonged power cuts.

“As the June-September monsoon rainfall was about 30 percent deficit in the state, water storage in all the 15 reservoirs is below 50 percent of

their capacity this year. As we have to store enough water till next the rainfall (a year away), hydel power output has been reduced by 40 per-

cent till (next) summer,” a senior official said. Failure to add generation capacity over the last decade commensurate with the growing demand has also forced the state government to buy power from private producers at a high cost for ensuring minimum supply to users, including commercial, agriculture and domestic. Absence of natural resources like coal have forced the state to rely heavily on monsoon-dependent hydel resources to generate about 60 percent of its energy requirements. Shortage of transmission lines is also preventing the state from drawing more power from national grid.

atting great Sachin Tendulkar and legendary legspinner Shane Warne have called for Twenty20 cricket to become an Olympic sport. Cricket has not featured since 1900 but the International Cricket Council (ICC) is meeting the International Olympic Committee (IOC) next month to discuss a possible bid. “I’d love to see it as an Olympic sport and, who knows, down the track it might be,” Australian Warne was quoted as saying by BBC on October 26. Former Indian batting superstar Tendulkar said: “I think it’s a great idea and I reckon T20 is the best format for it.” Warne and Tendulkar are captaining rival teams in a series of three Twenty20 All Star matches in the

Dhoni climbs two places in new ODI rankings DUBAI: India might have lost the One-Day international (ODI) series against South Africa but skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has climbed up two rungs to the sixth place in the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) batsmen rankings released on October 26. Dhoni now holds an 11-point advantage over his teammate Shikhar Dhawan. The jump for India’s limited overs skipper was due to some of his scores which included an unbeaten 92 runs and an innings of 47. There were also gains for Rohit Sharma (up three places to 12th).

Following its board meeting in October, the ICC announced that its chief executive David Richardson and director Giles Clarke would hold talks with the IOC in November. Tendulkar, who scored 15,921 runs in 200 Tests and 18,426 runs in the One-Day Internationals (ODIs) between 1989 and 2013, believes T20 is the ideal format for making the sport accessible at the Olympics. “It’s the most acceptable format for people who don’t have any knowledge about cricket or the ones who need an introduction to cricket,” said the leading run-scorer in Tests and ODIs. “The game is over in three hours and it’s like any sport — you go to a stadium and after three hours you get back to your work,” the 42-yearold from Mumbai added.

Pakistan threaten to pull out of 2016 T20 World Cup LAHORE: Pakistan may pull out of next year’s Twenty20 World Cup, if hosts India fail to honor the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) committing them to play six series between 2015 and 2023. Earlier, talks between the two cricket boards have failed to bear fruit after Shiv Sena activists barged into the Board of Control for Cricket in India office in Mumbai on October 19. Pakistan Cricket Board chief Shaharyar Khan on October 24 said that if India do not play a series in winter, then the government might not let Pakistan team take part in the World T20 next year. The 2016 Twenty20 World Cup is scheduled to be held in March and April. “This is possible that if India close all doors, then we have to decide and make a policy. We will have to take advice from the Pakistan government and I think the government will say don’t go in the event,” Khan said. India and Pakistan have not taken part in a bilateral Test series since 2007 after the Indian government chose to stall ties in the aftermath of the terrorist attack on Mumbai in 2008.

Amit Mishra gets bail in assault case

ducer who claimed to know 32year-old Mishra since the last four years, filed a complaint against him

at a local police station on September 27, alleging that she was abused and assaulted by the bowler at a posh hotel in the city on Sep 25. “We have collected details from Mishra, including his version of the incident. We will complete the investigation and submit the case report to a local court soon where he will have to face trial,” Patil said. A case was registered against the right-arm leg-spinner under various sections, including 325 and 354 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for outraging the modesty of a woman and assaulting her physically.

To pin everything on Dhoni for the team’s terrible showing is also unfair. It would be interesting to know who was the brains behind the strategy to ask Bhuvaeshwar Kumar and Mohit Sharma to bowl

consistently short and mostly from round the stumps, particularly to the left-handers. It worked for a while when they bowled to the lower-order batsmen but to expect quality batsmen.

Kajol in ‘comfort zone’ with ‘Dilwale’ The actress says working with Shah Rukh, one of her closest friends, is not only a joy, but also a learning process NIVEDITA, HYDERABAD

O

ne of Bollywood’s most loved actresses, Kajol, who will be back on the big screen with Dilwale, says she was in a “comfort zone” working with Shah Rukh Khan and director Rohit Shetty, and that she chose the film for its “unpredictable” element. Asked about what made her say ‘yes’ to the film, considering that she is often quite “choosy” when it comes to selecting her movies, Kajol said: “I wanted to do something which is unpredictable...and this film is definitely not predictable. I wanted to do something that I have not done before and I really liked the role and character in this film.” The fact that it has Shah Rukh as a co-actor and Rohit Shetty as a director made it her “comfort zone”, she said. “I think that matters a lot. I think that made a difference.” Kajol spoke during an exclusive media interaction with select scribes at the Ramoji Film City, where the last leg of Rohit Shetty’s directorial is being shot. Bollywood buffs are looking forward to the film, given Kajol and Shah Rukh’s roaring onscreen chemistry, a proof of which lies in films from Baazigar to Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge to My Name Is Khan. Together, they have made people believe in the magic of love. The actress says working with Shah Rukh, who is also one of her closest friends in the industry, is not only a joy, but also a learning process.

Yaara Silly Silly’s bold trailer out

MUMBAI: Veteran Subhash Sehgal’s romcom “Yaara Silly Silly” is releasing next month and the makers are leaving no stone unturned to promote the film to its fullest, with the second trailer of the film which begins with some very bold dialogues released on Monday. “I wanted my concept to be interesting, entertaining yet different, which Yaara Silly Silly is,” Sehgal told IANS.

Kajol was asked to describe how she and SRK have changed as individuals from the time they worked together in 1993 released film Baazigar till now. A lot, she said. “I think I have changed for better and we have become better people and better actors today. As far as Shah Rukh is concerned, he is such a technically superior actor. He is one of the best actors we have today.

‘Angry Indian Goddesses’ wins award at Rome Film Festival MUMBAI: Pan Nalin’s film Angry Indian Goddesses bagged an Audience Choice Award at the Rome Film Festival. The filmmaker is elated about the win. The honor, titled BNL People’s Choice Award, is bestowed on a movie which the viewing audience chooses as the best amongst the lot. “Many will agree that best awards in the world are People’s Choice Awards; so here the people of Rome and Italy have voted after filling edge-to-edge five full house shows. What we started in a little village of Goa has gone global beyond all our goals,” Nalin said in a statement. The director, whose film also got an eight-minute-long standing ovation at the festival, is thrilled for his film’s cast and crew. “Above all it’s a great sign of inspiration that the international ‘janta’ (public) is connecting to stories of celebration of Indian womanhood,” he added. “Angry Indian Goddesses” follows the stories of seven girls. It narrates the tale of how Frieda,

essayed by actress Sarah-Jane Dias, invites her closest girlfriends to Goa to announce her wedding, and it all turns into a wild bachelorette party. “In less than one month of its world premiere at Toronto, ‘Angry Indian Goddesses’ has made sales across the globe and will be released theatrically in more than 50 countries. The positivity surrounding the movie has added to the thrill of releasing the film pan India,” said Gaurav Dhingra, the film’s producer.

‘Shaandaar’: Avant-garde gone awry? Looks like Film: Shaandaar; Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Sanah Kapoor, Sushma Seth, Pankaj Kapur, Niki Aneja Walia, Sanjay Kapoor, Diljit Dosanjh; Director: Vikas Bahl; Rating: **

T

reated like a fantasy film with a backdrop of an ostentatious Indian wedding, Vikas Bahl’s Shaandaar is actually the story of a father-daughter bonding. With a love story being an essential ingredient for a commercial Hindi film, that too, is thrown in for good measure. Bankrupt and on the verge of

penury, the wedding, is a business deal, pouts the matriarch of the Arora family, Kamala (Sushma Seth) during a family conference that consists of her three sons: Vipin (Pankaj

Kapur), Viren and Vinay (Sagar Arya), daughter-in-law Geetu (Niki Walia), grand-daughter Isha (Sanah Kapoor) and an orphan girl Alia (Alia Bhatt) who has been adopted

by Vipin. Jagjinder Joginder (Shahid Kapoor) is the wedding planner who arrives to ensure the smooth execution of this big-fat-Sindhi wedding. Predictably so, he falls in love with the orphan Alia. Isha, Vipin’s daughter, is the sacrificial goat in the family and is being betrothed to Robin (Diljit Dosanjh), brother of a rich Sindhi businessman Harry Fandwani (Sanjay Kapoor). If the plot and premise of the film seem promising, it is the execution of the tale that is flawed and is the film’s undoing. Mounted on a lavish scale, the essence of the simple and somewhat sweet messages are lost, in the quagmire of cinematic gimmicks. — Troy Ribeiro

TDF organizes Dasara celebration in Atlanta

BY A STAFF WRITER UMMING, GA -- Religious fervor and gaiety marked the annual Bathukamma-Dasara Sambaralu, organized by the Telangana Development Forum (TDF), Atlanta Chapter, at Piney Grove Middle School, Hundreds of Telangana women living in Metropolitan Atlanta, decked up traditionally, arrived at the venue with their flamboyant flower stacks that embodied Goddess Maha Gowri, who is revered as life-giver and symbolizes the woman-hood going by Telangana folklore. The decibel levels were high and the spirit was awesome at the venue as the ladies danced around the flower mounds to devotional Bathukamma songs for hours on end. It was a pleasant sight to see little girls joining their mothers and sisters in their ode to the Mother Nature. The eight-hour event clearly surpassed the attendance of any Bathukamma event in preceding years in Atlanta as over 1,600 people of Telangana origin living in the Greater Atlanta area thronged the venue. The event started with sumptuous meal sponsored by Suvidha Indo-Pak Groceries

Pilot killed as US Marine Corps fighter jet crashes

Major Taj Sareen BY A STAFF WRITER AN FRANCISCO, CA -- The pilot of a US Marine Corps F-18 was killed on October 22 when the plane crashed near a British air base in eastern England, US and British officials said. His family in Hillsborough was too distraught to discuss his death. The US Embassy in London confirmed the death of the pilot, identified by his sister as Taj Sareen, 34 Sareen graduated from the University of San Francisco in 2004. He was a pilot in the Marine Corps for nearly 11 years. Neighbors in Southern California said he lived in San Diego on a military base. And they couldn’t believe that he had survived six months in Bahrain, only to die heading back home to California. His LinkedIn profile shows that he had been a Marine pilot since 2005, an agency analyst for New York Life Insurance Company and a development analyst for AOL. He also earned his bachelor’s degree in political science and economics from the University of San Francisco, according to his resume, where he also played tennis. Sareen leaves behind a family, including a young daughter.

Indian dies as car rams into parade watchers BY A STAFF WRITER TILLWATER (OK) -- Nikita Prabhakar Nakal, a student from Mumbai, and three others were killed when a car crashed into a crowd watching the homecoming parade at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater on October 24. Nikita (23) was a graduate student at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO). Nasha Lucas, a two-year-old boy, Marvin Lyle Stone (65), retired Oklahoma state professor, and his wife Bonnie Jean Stone (65) also died in the accident. Stones and Lucas were residents of Stillwater. According to the police, 47 others, including several children were injured, out of which four are in critical condition. The police said a car driven by Stillwater resident Adacia Avery Chambers (25) drove into a crowd of spectators striking numerous people

S

Nikita Nakal as well as an unmanned police motorcycle on Saturday at 10.31am at the intersection of Hall of Fame Ave. and Main St. The intersection was the termination point of the parade, and lined with spectators when the collision occurred. The driver, Adacia Chambers, was taken into custody after the crash and is being held at the Stillwater jail on

suspicion of driving under the influence and four other counts of second-degree murder. The attorney representing Chambers said he believed mental illness, not intoxication, caused the crash. “She doesn’t remember a whole lot about what happened,” According to Nikita’s Facebook account, she moved to the United States in late July to pursue a graduate degree at the UCO. “New home it is!! Missing amchi Mumbai already,” she wrote in a post on July 22 from the DallasFort Worth airport, on her way to Oklahoma City. Nikita was doing her master’s in business administration in the UCO after completing her bachelor degree in commerce from Mumbai University. She had earlier worked as a customer service executive at Tech Mahindra Business Solutions and as a transaction processing specialist at JP Morgan Chase.

Indian is NAPABA’s new policy director BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association has named Navdeep Singh as its new policy director. The Indian American will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies and programs to support NAPABA’s policy priorities in his new role. “It is a tremendous honor to join NAPABA,” Singh said in a statement. “I am excited to support NAPABA in its continued efforts to address the civil rights issues confronting Asian Pacific American communities, and to help ensure a robust, dynamic, and successful future for NAPABA and the Asian Pacific American community.” Singh, an expert in strategic legal policy and civil rights, was previously at the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund in the same role.

The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled 2-1 last week that Amir Meshal’s lawsuit could not move forward because the agents’ conduct took place overseas during a terrorism investigation. The ruling upholds a lower court decision last year that threw out Meshal’s case. Meshal filed his lawsuit in 2009, claiming that after he left Somalia for neighboring Kenya, FBI agents interrogated him and accused him of receiving training from al-Qaida. The appeals court said the fact that Meshal was a US citizen did not outweigh the court’s reluctance to interfere with
