BRIEFS: Vitamin B linked to lung cancer in men NEW YORK: Long-term, high-dose supplementation of vitamins B6 and B12 — touted by the vitamin industry for increasing energy and improving metabolism — may be associated with a two to four fold increased risk of lung cancer in men, new research has warned. The findings showed that male smokers who take more than 20 mg of Vitamin B6 were three times more likely to develop lung cancer, compared to non-users.

shifted from 50 years to 30 years. The magnitude of the problem is enormous and has major policy implications for the Indian government, said Vijay Pereira, Associate Dean (Research) at the University of Wollongong in Dubai. Pereira said there were complex challenges at national, state and community levels. “What is clear is that healthcare at state-level must transform to deliver quality care and awareness,” Pereira said. The researchers found lack of awareness about self-examination and cultural barriers played a

ower levels of a brain chemical that regulates mood, sleep and appetite may be a key player in cognitive decline and not just a side-effect of Alzheimer’s disease — as previously believed, researchers have found. Previous studies have shown that people with Alzheimer’s disease and severe cognitive decline have loss of serotonin neurons. The new study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins University in the US, of people with very early signs of memory decline, suggests that lower serotonin transporters may be drivers of the disease than a byproduct.

ways to prevent the loss of serotonin or introducing a substitute neurotransmitter could slow or stop the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and perhaps other dementias. “Now that we have more evidence that serotonin is a chemical that appears affected early in cognitive decline, we suspect that increasing serotonin function in the brain could prevent memory loss from getting worse and slow disease progression,” said Gwenn Smith, Professor at the varsity. For the study, to be published in the journal Neurobiology of Disease, the researchers recruited participants with mild cognitive impairment mainly in memory — indicative of Alzheimer’s disease.

researchers suggested. “India is still a patriarchal society. Though women are in responsible jobs and earning, it’s the men who are the head of the household,” said Judith Fletcher-Brown from the University of Portsmouth, England.

Avoid blood cancer risk with Vitamin C NEW YORK: Boosting daily requirement of vitamin C may be helpful in curbing the development of leukemia — a deadly blood cancer, a study has found. Published in the journal Nature, the study showed that stem cells soak up unusually high levels of vitamin C, which then regulates the cell function and suppresses the development of leukemia. “Stem cells use Vitamin C to regulate the abundance of certain chemical modifications on DNA,,” said Michalis Agathocleous, from University of Texas- Southwestern.

he synchronization of the next general election with the assembly polls of 2018 to set a pattern may not be the only reason why the Narendra Modi government is said to be considering bringing forward the 2019 general election by a year. While the need to evolve a system where the major elections are held simultaneously has been talked about for some time, the present conjecture relates mainly to the calculations about the prospects of the ruling party at the Centre. The belief seemingly is that it will be better for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to cash in on whatever gains it has made in the last three-and-a-

An estimated 10.6 million cases of TB occur annually in the world, and India accounts for 27 per cent. The findings showed that malnutrition attributes to more than 61 per cent of TB cases in women, while alcohol was responsible for up to 75 per cent of TB cases in males. Alcohol use results in poor TB treatment adherence and worse TB outcomes, including death, while closer integration between TB control programs and alcohol treatment programs may improve outcomes, the researchers noted.

It will serve the party better, therefore, to advance the dates of the general election when the Modi magic has not quite faded as a recent opinion poll has shown and the opposition continues to be in disarray. Although the government cannot but derive considerable satisfaction from the opposition’s discomfiture, it cannot be unaware of the fact that it still has pockets of influence as is evident from the marginal improvement in the Congress’s position in the recent Madhya Pradesh local elections and the Trinamool Congress’s sweeping victories in the

previous elections can be disheartening on the eve of the general election if it is held in 2019. It will also be demoralizing for the BJP if the Congress wins in Karnataka and the CPI-M in Tripura. Holding the general election earlier will enable the BJP to avoid such possibilities.

“cow mask” photography series uploaded on Instagram by 24-year-old photographer Sujatro Ghosh recently took the Internet by storm. Shot entirely on a mobile phone, the series features a woman wearing a cow mask posing at different iconic landmarks in India. Ghosh said he wanted to highlight “women’s safety is a more serious concern than cow vigilantism”, using the mask as a metaphor. Mounting it in an art gallery would have restricted its reach. “I never wanted to display my photography within four walls,” Ghosh, who now has more than 25,000 followers on social media, told IANS. “There is no doubt Instagram has helped me reach out to a much larger audience, making my project successful,” he added. “One of the remarkable properties of these compounds is that they are clearly non-toxic, unlike most antibiotics,” Townsend added. Nearly 10 years ago, researchers had found that pregnant women play host to group B strep bacteria and the pathogen can be transmitted to infants through breastfeeding. But because most babies do not become infected with group B strep, they wanted to see if some women’s breast milk contained protective compounds that specifically fight that bacteria. In a new study, the team members are testing more than a dozen additional milk samples to see if breastmilk sugars are effective.

Group B strep bacteria, whose common host are pregnant women, remain the leading cause of severe infections in newborns worldwide, which often leads to sepsis or pneumonia, and in severe cases death, because they do not have fully developed defense mechanisms. Trump on Afghanistan music to India’s ears

For India, the key takeaway is that Trump will lean on Modi to step up to the plate and show a greater willingness to get involved MAYANK CHHAYA, CHICAGO

P

resident Donald Trump has signaled an openended involvement without an identifiable end game by announcing a conditionsbased approach instead of a timebased approach to the Afghan war. In his first major national address on a key foreign policy challenge, Trump spoke in terms of ending the focus on nation-building and instead concentrating on “killing terrorists”. The speech was an about-turn on his frequent assertions during his presidential campaign and prior to that of pulling out of Afghanistan. He spoke in terms of “an honorable and enduring outcome worthy of the tremendous sacrifices” that America has made without quite defining what that outcome would look like. He also seemed to implicitly rule out “a rapid exit” because its consequences are “predictable and unacceptable”. The President’s clearest focus was on the presence of terror groups in Afghanistan and Pakistan. “Today 20 U.S. designated foreign terrorist organisations are active in Afghanistan and Pakistan -- the highest concentration in any region of the world,” he said.

US President Donald Trump.

In what would be music to India’s ears, he also said, “For its part, Pakistan often gives safe haven to agents of chaos, violence and terror” but added a caveat saying, “The threat is worse because Pakistan and India are two nucleararmed states whose tense relations threaten to spiral into conflict.” Trump specifically sought India’s help in the Afghan war, calling New Delhi a “key” strategic ally

even as he pointed out how it made billions of dollars in trade from America. While the speech was mostly a dressing up of past policies, he tried to make it sound as if it was a radical departure. In fact, his emphasis on a conditions-based approach clearly foreshadows an extended and even permanent US presence in the country. That brings into focus yet again

the folly of the Afghan war as the US approaches the 16th anniversary of its invasion of Afghanistan on October 7. The sheer financial cost of the endeavor seemingly without an end game tells a story full of follies. So far, Washington has spent close to $800 billion dollars on the Afghan war, making it an average of about $49 billion dollars a year since 2001. Contrasted against Afghanistan’s 2016 GDP of $19.49 billion that cost of war illustrates one of the scandalous follies. With the conditions having clearly worsened in the last one year or so, the President’s so-called new approach already has an intrinsic sanction built in for a prolonged engagement. Although he did not talk in terms of injecting more troops, there are expectations that it may well happen soon. For India, the important takeaway from the speech is that the Trump administration will lean on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to step up to the plate and show a greater willingness to get involved. It is not clear if Trump expects India to get involved militarily, a prospect New Delhi would shudder at given its own tensions with China and Pakistan.

BRIEFS Trump dismisses climate change panel WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump’s administration has dismissed a 15-member federal advisory committee on climate change, the media reported. The panel was to make recommendations to government agencies based on a a congressionally mandated climate report. The federal report, required every four years, provides a comprehensive statement from the scientific community on where the nation stands in relation to climate change. Scientists have told CNN they fear the administration might try to bury the findings of the congressionally mandated climate report.

Charlottesville: Trump defends response WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has defended his white supremacist response to the Charlottesville violence -- omitting that he blamed “many sides” for the clashes — and also threatened to shut down the government, if necessary, to built a wall along the Mexico border. Trump, stung by days of criticism that he sowed racial division in the country after the Charlottesville violence, told supporters at a “Make America Great Again” rally in Phoenix, Arizona, on Tuesday that he strongly condemned “neo-Nazis, white supremacists and the KKK”, CNN reported. Vice President Mike Pence and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson also attended the rally. --IANS

Hate crime rampant in US: Clinton calls Trump ‘creep’ in new book Google’s AI-based site IANS, WASHINGTON

SAN FRANCISCO: Violence that erupted at a white supremacist rally in Virginia may have shocked many but hate crime is actually rampant in the US, Google’s new website using artificial intelligence (AI) to track hate crime has revealed. Google has launched “The Documenting Hate News Index” in partnership with its News Lab and the data visualisation studio Pitch Interactive, collecting news reports on hate incidents and makes them searchable by name, topic and date, Fortune reported this week. According to the journalism non-profit ProPublica, incidents of hate are “actually all too common in the US”. “More than just a list, the site

U

allows hate-related stories to be browsed by date, and shows fluctuations in overall reports of hate crimes over time,” the report noted. While violence in Charlottesville captured headlines, media turned a blind eye to the crimes that included two fatalities in an anti-Muslim attack in Portland in May.

S former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in her new book has called President Donald Trump a “creep” and said he made her “skin crawl” by stalking her around the stage during a presidential debate. In audio excerpts of the book “What Happened” aired this week on MSNBC, Clinton described her 2016 campaign as “joyful, humbling, infuriating and just plain baffling” and acknowledged that she failed her millions of supporters by losing to Trump in the November 2016 election, the Washington Post reported. Clinton described the televised debate on October 9 in Missouri in which Trump followed her closely around the stage, lurking behind her as she fielded questions from a live television audience. The debate came two days after an

Hillary Clinton

audiotape emerged in which Trump was heard bragging about groping women. “It was incredibly uncomfortable. He was literally breathing

down my neck. My skin crawled,” she said. “It was one of those moments where you wish you could hit pause and ask everyone watching, ‘Well, what would you do?’ Do you stay calm, keep smiling and carry on as if he weren’t repeatedly invading your space? Or do you turn, look him in the eye and say loudly and clearly, ‘Back up, you creep. Get away from me. I know you love to intimidate women, but you can’t intimidate me, so back up’.” Clinton said she chose the first option. She said writing the book, due to be released on September 12, “wasn’t easy”. “Every day that I was a candidate for President, I knew that millions of people were counting on me and I couldn’t bear the idea of letting them down. But I did,” Clinto said. “I couldn’t get the job done.”

Instant triple talaq unlawful: SC The judgment was widely welcomed by political parties including the BJP and Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and women’s organizations across the country

Will Nilekani be back in Infosys Board? BENGALURU: Smarting from the fallout of boardroom battles in the software major Infosys on their investments in its stock, a dozen leading domestic institutional Nandan Nilekani investors (DIIs) on Wednesday urged the company to invite its cofounder Nandan Nilekani to join the Board. “After considerable thought and mutual deliberations, we strongly feel that the Board of Infosys should invite Nandan Nilekani to join it in a suitable capacity,” said the DIIs in a letter, accessed by IANS here. As the IT major’s institutional shareholders, they told the Board that the recent developments were of much concern to each of them. “In our opinion, he (Nilekani) enjoys the confidence of various stakeholders, including customers, shareholders and employees,” said the investors in the joint letter. As one of the original seven cofounders of the $10 billion software firm, 62-year-old Nilekani left the company in 2009 as Vice-Chairman to join the state-run Unique Identification Authority of India as its first Chairman. manifestly arbitrary and void in law. However, the minority judgment concluded that “talaq-e-biddat” was a matter of personal law of Muslims that does not breach the Constitution’s Article 25 (right to practice one’s religion).

NEW DELHI: The Jamiat Ulemae-Hind (JUH), one of India’s largest groups of Muslim clerics, on Wednesday described the Supreme Court decision striking down instant divorce as violative of the “Shariah” and a matter of “grave concern” for the Muslim community. Jamiat General Secretary Maulana Mahmood Madani said instant triple talaq was still valid as per the Islamic code notwithstanding the Supreme Court declaring it as unconstitutional and void in law. “Even now, if a man administers instant talaq, it will come into effect as per Shariah for those who believe in it,” he told reporters here. —IANS

‘Right to privacy a fundamental right’ I IANS, NEW DELHI

n a major boost to individual freedom, the Supreme Court on Friday declared that right to privacy was a fundamental right and protected as an intrinsic part of life and personal liberty and freedoms guaranteed by Constitution. Rejecting the government’s contention that privacy was not a fundamental right, a nine-judge Constitution bench unanimously overturned two earlier rulings in the M.P. Sharma and Kharak Singh cases that held that the right to pri-

vacy was not protected by the Constitution. “The right to privacy is protected as an intrinsic part of the right to life and personal liberty under Article 21 and as a part of the freedoms guaranteed by Part III of the Constitution. Decisions subsequent to Kharak Singh which enunciated the above (line) lay down the correct position in law,” the bench headed by Chief Justice J.S. Khehar said. The judgment was widely welcomed by political parties including the BJP and Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and women’s organizations. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) welcomed the judgment on the ground that it accords protection to Muslim personal law. The political parties said the landmark judgment accorded equality to Muslim women and rendered gender justice.

Road in Ladakh will worsen dispute: China BEIJING: China on Thursday said India has “slapped its own face” by deciding to build a road near Pangong Lake in Ladakh and it would only worsen the Doklam dispute. Beijing said the western sector of the boundary where India plans to build a road is not “delimited”. It warned that the move was not “conducive” to peace in the region. Will Modi opt for early general election?

It is better for BJP to cash in on the gains it has made in the last three-and-a-halfyears rather than wait for next 20 months AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

T

he synchronization of the next general election with the assembly polls of 2018 to set a pattern may not be the only reason why the Narendra Modi government is said to be considering bringing forward the 2019 general election by a year. While the need to evolve a system where the major elections are held simultaneously has been talked about for some time, the present conjecture relates mainly to the calculations about the prospects of the ruling party at the Centre. The belief seemingly is that it will be better for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to cash in on whatever gains it has made in the last three-and-a-

half-years rather than wait for another 20 months or so when its inadequacies on the employment front and in relieving the distress of farmers may become more apparent.

West Bengal municipal polls. The BJP also knows that it has to guard against the anti-incumbency factor affecting the party’s prospects in the assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Gujarat next year. Even if it wins, a loss of seats compared to the

previous elections can be disheartening on the eve of the general election if it is held in 2019. It will also be demoralizing for the BJP if the Congress wins in Karnataka and the CPI-M in Tripura. Holding the general election earlier will enable the BJP to avoid such possibilities.

What the BJP will have to remember is that people often vote against the ruling party because of dissatisfaction with its performance even if the opponent is weak. This happened in Goa and Manipur, where the Congress was the first party before it lost this position because of the BJP’s success in weaning away a number of legislators. However, such defections could not hide the fact that there was dissatisfaction with the BJP. The same disenchantment has also been voiced by a fairly wide section of the people in recent weeks as can be seen from the protest letters written to the Prime Minister by retired bureaucrats and army veterans and the processions taken out by scientists about the encouragement of obscurantist practices by the ruling dispensation. These grievances have nothing to do with unemployment and farmers’ distress which are undoubtedly the two most serious problems faced by the government. Instead, these are the grouses of the average middle-class householders who have been feeling uneasy about the growing climate of intolerance although it probably does not affect them in a personal capacity. Even then, the depredations of the gau rakshaks, along with the possibility of the police entering private homes to check whether anyone is eating beef, as the Maharashtra government wants to do, the competitive jingoism in TV channels, the foul language used by the BJP’s supporters against the party’s opponents in the social media, the distortion of history, including the blanking out of Jawaharal Nehru’s name from the speeches of high dignitaries, are some of the trends which can cause unease among the common people.

“There is no doubt Instagram has helped me reach out to a much larger audience, making my project successful,” he added. n Indian origin CEO says he was racially abused and was told to “go back” to India and also take along top Indian-American diplomat Nikki Haley after he refused to defend US President Donald Trump’s economic agenda following the racial violence in Virginia. Ravin Gandhi, founder and CEO of GMM Nonstick Coatings, a global supplier of coatings for cookware and bakeware, penned an op-ed for CNBC following the Charlottesville racial violence but in response was slammed and racially abused by readers, the Chicago Tribune reported. At least one woman was killed and dozens were injured in Charlottesville last week during clashes between white supremacists and counter-protestors at a rally. Trump, instead of blaming white supremacists, held both sides responsible for the violence and was criticized by both Democrats and Republicans for the response. “I recently told the New York Times I was ‘rooting’ for certain aspects of Trump’s economic agen-

da,” Gandhi, 44, wrote in the article. “After Charlottesville and its aftermath, I will not defend Trump even if the Dow hits 50,000, unemployment goes to 1 per cent, and GDP grows by 7 per cent... I will not in good conscience support a President who seems to hate Americans who don’t look like him.” “The fact that Trump equated hate groups with those protesting hate lit me up,” Gandhi said. “His moral leadership on this issue is reprehensible.”

Indian origin editor-publisher ousted by Los Angeles Times WASHINGTON: An Indian origin journalist has been fired as the editor of the Los Angeles Times daily in a dramatic shake-up to move the daily more quickly into the digital age. Davan Maharaj, who served as both editor and publisher since March 2016, was terminated on August 21 along with three senior editors — Managing Editor Marc Duvoisin, Deputy Managing Editor for Digital Megan Garvey and Assistant Managing Editor of Investigations Matt Doig, the Los Angeles Times reported. Maharaj, who became editor in late 2011, oversaw a period in which digital subscriptions and readership increased — but not as quickly as at larger, national papers. A native of Trinidad, Maharaj started at the paper as an intern in 1989 and worked as a reporter in Orange County, Los Angeles, and east Africa. His six-part series “Living on Pennies”, in collaboration with photographer Francine Orr, won the 2005 Ernie Pyle Award for human interest writing and prompted readers to donate tens of thou-

US-born Gandhi, after his op-ed was published, received a voicemail from an alleged Trump supporter, who told him to “get your (expletive) garbage and go back to India”. “You can take that other half(expletive) Bangladesh creep with you, Nikki Haley,” the woman said in the message. “She’s the one that started all this when she took down the Confederate flag. So don’t tell us that you gave him a chance. We don’t

give a (expletive) who you gave a chance, OK? We’re going to start taking down Buddhist statues and see how you and Nikki Haley like that.” The caller told Gandhi to “go clean up your own (expletive) country, it’s a filthy mess”. He soon posted the voicemail on the social media and also shared the nastier emails he received, the report said. “It was obvious that people thought my professional position somewhat protected me,” he said. “I wanted to show people that racism is blind to socio-economics. “Even though my race is a complete non-issue in my day-to-day life, the sad reality is there’s a group of racists in the USA that views me as a second-class citizen,” he said. “I wanted my peers in the business community, the civic community, my friend community to see that this can happen to me. Because there’s this delusion that racism is dead because (Barack) Obama was elected (President),” Gandhi said. He said while his sharing a “bigoted” voicemail may not make a big difference, he will speak out against such abuse as long as he has a platform to do so.

Hindu temple probed for ‘criminal offenses’ SINGAPORE: A police investigation has been launched into the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, one of the oldest Hindu temples in Singapore, over suspected criminal offenses, a media report said. The police confirmed on August 22 that its Commercial Affairs Department was conducting the probe but said it was “inappropriate” to comment further, the Strait Times reported. The temple on 141 Serangoon Road is a well-known landmark in the Little India area. ustralian High Commissioner to India Harinder Sidhu feels that when two nations are forging a relationship they usually talk about political, diplomatic or economical tie-ups but what matters most is the link between people. Sidhu says Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop emphasizes on creating bonds through “fashion diplomacy” and India is one of the countries that tops the chart. “We have been looking at different ways of building relationships with India. A good relationship has many levels to it and for the first time we have a female Foreign Minister who is very keen on fashion diplomacy, and this is the term we are taking forward,” Sidhu told IANS on the sidelines of Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Winter/Festive 2017. “It (the association through fashion) has been incredibly successful. I feel that not just fashion brings people together but

it’s also a very large industry in its own right. “Australia is one of the big producers of products like cotton and wool and India is home to a great deal of creativity and I think these collaborations are cementing the whole dimension of relations between the two countries,” she added. Sidhu was here to support designer Gaurav Jai Gupta of the brand Akaaro. The designer’s show, that was supported by the Australian Foreign Affairs and Trade departments, used Australian

homegrown Merino Wool as one of the fabrics in his line. Asked about the relationship between the two countries, Sidhu said: “I think a lot of time when we talk about relationships between two countries, we talk about political, diplomatic, economic or trade relations. “All these things matter a lot but what is glue between two countries is actually the link between its people.” “How we grow to understand each other better when we are together in collaboration matters a lot,” she said.

My best is yet to come: Pujara ‘As a cricketer, I always feel my best is yet to come and I have been working hard for it,’ says Cheteshwar Pujara DEBAYAN MUKHERJEE, KOLKATA

heteshwar Pujara, India’s standout performer in the last 12 months wearing the white flannels, feels he still has a lot of areas to improve on and his best is yet to come. “As a cricketer, I always feel my best is yet to come and I have been working hard for it,” Pujara, who has just helped India rout Sri Lanka 3-0 in the Test series in the latter’s backyard, told IANS in a telephonic interview. “I am performing well, but I still feel there are areas I can improve and even perform better. So this is not the best phase of my life. I think the best is yet to come,” said the 29-year-old right-hander known for his craft at the crease. In the last year or so, the

Saurashtra batsman has gone from strength to strength, becoming the new Mr. Dependable in Virat Kohli’s Test team. The second-highest run getter in Sri Lanka, amassing 309 in three games, which included two centuries, Pujara has been India’s most

Cheteshwar Pujara aggregated 1,316 runs from 13 matches in the 201617 home season consistent batsman alongside Kohli since the team’s return from the tour of the West Indies last year. Pranaav-Sikki lose, Srikanth in quarters in Badminton Worlds GLASGOW: India’s Kidambi Srikanth reached the men’s singles quarter-finals, while the mixed doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N. Sikki Reddy lost in the prequarterfinals of the World Badminton Championships here on Thursday. Eighth seed Srikanth registered a 21-14, 21-18 win over Danish 14th seed Anders Antonsen. Pranaav and Sikki, the 15th seeds, battled hard as they came close to upsetting the Indonesian seventh seeds Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanto but the latter pair

has helped him a great deal. “This was my third season (in county cricket). My first was for Derbyshire, then I played for Yorkshire. This time I played for Nottinghamshire. So I’ve always enjoyed playing county cricket,” said Pujara, who struck a century and a half-century in five innings of four games for Nottinghamshire. “The wickets are always challenging; there is always something in it for the fast bowlers. So when you start scoring runs you feel confident as you start knowing your technique better. The culture and the atmosphere also (helps). I always have a good time playing over there and I learn a lot.” Asked about the way India virtually bulldozed Sri Lanka, Pujara said the team played to its strength after fine preparation.

I think that is very important. NorthEast United FC could be any other team tom-toming about big signings, but that is not going to be our

I think it is very important for us to develop our own home-grown players and own home-grown heroes,” he added. The Bollywood star visited the club’s Centre of Excellence in Meghalaya’s capital Shillong to nurture football talent across the eight states of the northeast region. Nonetheless, Abraham said his

India needs to promote woman power for better shot at Olympic medals SIDDHARTHA UPADHYAY, NEW DELHI

A

few months ago, I was on a panel discussing how more women could be engaged in sports or how equal opportunities could be created for them in sports. Sitting on a platform set up by the country’s largest industry body that is backed by the government, it certainly did not make sense for anybody to criticize existing policies or programmes. Hence, I chose to present a case study — one of the most successful initiatives by the US government to increase women’s participation

Indian wrestler Sakshi Malik.

in sports — Title IX. Before I write about the Title, let me make a prediction: the US will once again be taking home the highest medal

haul in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics — almost 40 per cent more than the second placed country (as it did in Rio in 2016 and before that

in London) and most of those medals will be won by their women. I say that because unlike any other country in the world, women in the US have become a force for the Olympic team — making the gap for their male counterparts wider to match. In Rio, US women won 61 of the 121 medals claimed by the US, against 55 by the men (five medals came in mixed events); and 27 of the country’s 46 golds. In London, women won 58 medals and the men 45. However, this was not always the case. The credit for the rise of American women in sports goes to

Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, a 45-year-old federal law that broadly prohibits gender discrimination in any educational programme that receives government funding. This rule means that schools must offer equal athletic opportunities to both sexes, a requirement that essentially funnels females into Olympic sports. An American teenage girl from a family with below average income can afford to play waterpolo, do gymnastics, go for swimming and engage in basketball, football and soccer before deciding which sport she may continue with and excel at.

‘Body of missing journalist found’ COPENHAGEN: Police in Denmark’s capital Copenhagen on Wednesday said the DNA profile of a body found earlier matches that of missing Swedish journalist Kim Wall. Wall went missing after having boarded a privately built submarine on August 10 as she was working on a story about the owner and inventor of the vessel, Peter Madsen, Xinhua news agency reported. The 18-metre vessel, UC3 Nautilus, sank on the same night in waters near Koge Bay of Denmark.

BEIJING: China on Wednesday reacted cautiously to Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba’s four-day visit to India, saying international diplomacy is not a zero sum game. Nepal has said it will be neutral in the Sino-Indian dispute, which has pitted the armies of the two countries against each other in Doklam on the border.

“China is happy to see the development of sound and healthy relations between Nepal and India,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said. itch chunky neck jewelry in the scorching heat. Go for pearl strings or delicate multi-layer pieces when you attend a summer wedding. Manju Kothari (Creative Director at Entice Jewelery), Rajesh Tulsiani (Director at Dwarkadas Chandumal Jewellers) and Chitwn D Malhotra (lead designer and founder Dillano Luxurious Jewels Pvt Ltd) have tips on jewelry trends that could be followed: n Pearls can never go out of style and have always been a constant favorite adornment on weddings for all the right reasons. They balance your entire look with royalty and go well with all skin tones and wedding lehenga colors. They are a meek epitome of a gleaming bead but without being overly dramatic, and are multipurpose. n Multi-layer neckpiece will give you a completely traditional look on your wedding day and allows

Lustrous necklaces will help you to enhance your entire bridal assemble and are easy to carry even in a warm weather. They can give you a variety of looks from simple and understated to perky and bling.

Arm cuffs: Clutching up on the forearm, though tiny in size, these accessories make just as much of an impression with your other jewellery, foremost ornaments. Your choice in arm cuffs should be equally bold to balance your overall look. Head-turning earrings: They should be equally sparkly, but somewhat lighter in design to avoid a melodramatic look. With typical

diamond or pearl wedding jewellery, a pair of elegant drop hoops will highlight the rest of your accessories. n Opt for colors that celebrate the season and add a dimension to your outfit. Colored stones and gemstones in various settings will

uplift the outfit and add a splash of color. n Choose comfortable jewellery for hands. If haathphools are not suitable and it does not match your style, then go for chunky cocktail rings studded with colored gemstones.

Wrong jewelry selection can kill his mood ‘Get bridal jewelry right’ NEW DELHI: Bridal jewelery is a once in a lifetime investment for every woman, and so it needs to be chosen carefully. Pieces that can be worn in multiple ways are high on trend, says an expert. Manju Kothari, Creative Director, fine jewellery retail brand Entice, tells you which jewellery to pick for a winter wedding: u Choice of wearing two medium-sized necklaces on the wedding day as compared to one extra large necklace is trending these days. The two necklaces when worn together, preferably a choker and a long necklace, create a grand effect and can be worn later

individually. u Mehendi functions are the one of the most fun parts of any wedding. Maangtika with chandelier earrings add grace and the desired sparkle to the overall attire. u Dresses for cocktail evenings can be paired with white diamonds that can further enhance the look of the bride to be. u For a winter wedding, a very stylish but long forgotten piece of jewelery is the brooch. Instead of a pin, use this to tuck the pallu/dupatta. u For day weddings, incorporating subtle colored gemstones like pink tourmalines, turquoise, amethysts and pearls can give a stunning look.

Wedding venue: Your first task Choosing the right wedding venue is one of the key decisions one has to take for setting a perfect ambiance. Thus, proper research is a must to make one’s D-Day memorable IANS, NEW DELHI

Monsoon wedding: Tips to beat blues

O

ne of the most important decisions affecting wedding celebrations is choosing the right wedding venue. From blocking the venue at the right time to doing your research properly are some of the factors that one should keep in mind while selecting it, says an expert. Rahul Arora, Director at Grandreams, a wedding planning service, has shared a few tips that could guide you in covering most of your problems: Date: Deciding the date of the event is primarily the first step to realize your plans. Once you are certain, why wait? It is only in the interest of the client, as he is at a better position to negotiate due to low demand. It is the traditional first-come, first-served policy that is applied by all venues. Once the wedding season is round the corner, the demand rockets consequently turning the tables on negotiation and priority. Guest count: Before you choose a venue, you ought to know your guest list. Knowing these numbers helps in setting a realistic budget and sidelines all trivial troubles. Research: Make sure your selection is not swayed by a commercial website alone. The best way to do it is to get out there to personally experience various venues, especially during an on-going function so as to

The best way to select a location for your wedding is to get out there to personally experience various venues, especially during an on-going function so as to get an idea of what to expect.

get an idea of what to expect. Location proximity: Where do you want to get married? The possibilities are endless nowadays. You can have a big traditional wedding in your hometown or an exciting getaway to a fabulous destination for all of your friends and family. Destination weddings sound dreamier, but a location in reasonable proximity of your friends and family will make sure all your loved ones are present on your big day. Food quality and presentation: With a culture as wide as India’s, good food is hard to define, thus maintaining a good rapport with

the chef from the very beginning can help you bring out more personalized results, so don’t shy away from food trials. Ambiance: Pay special attention to the existing décor inside the venue. What style is the architecture and what does the building’s interior convey? The ambiance alone can have a huge impact on the mood of the event. Get in touch with the florist to discuss the available options and preferences. Ask for samples. Your taste should reflect on everything you choose. Let them know what you like and dislike from the very begin-

ning to avoid disappointments. Valet and parking facilities: We all know Delhi with its mapping and tremendous traffic. The least you can do is provide parking and valet services to ease the process for the hundreds of guests arriving to attend your function. Attention to small details like these can help you build a perfect experience. Weather: While farmhouse weddings may have been the trend all along, Delhi’s notorious weather can ruin the best in little or no time. Therefore, luxury banquets help meet the demand of having a majestic edifice on your special day.

NEW DELHI: Having a monsoon wedding? Avoid heavy fabrics like silk and velvet, stay away from extra bling and slip into flats or juttis, say experts. Pick wedding attire wisely: Avoid heavy fabrics like silk, velvet and brocade as they can be very uncomfortable owing to their weight. Lighter options like net, georgette, crepe, chiffon, light satin and lace Kota handloom with light borders and heavy blouses are some options that could be explored. Also, avoid complicated draping styles for your sari or lehenga dupatta. Say no to too much bling: Strictly say no to kilos of embellishment on the wedding dress as it will make you feel uncomfortable. Pick out something with minimal embellishments and adornments. Go for rich lace work and minimal embroidery which will accentuate your wedding wear. It is best to go for a choli with intricate designs and pair it with a lighter ghagra and lehenga. Feel yourself barefoot: Just like your outfit, your footwear should be comfortable too. Less inched heels, wedges or platforms will work. You can also go for ‘blinged-up’ flats or juttis. —IANS

Gearing up for beach wedding? Get these things in place first IANS, NEW DELHI

A

destination wedding is a lot of fun for the couple as well as guests. After all, it turns out to be mini vacation for everyone around. But the preparations for such an occasion also depend on the kind of location you are choosing along with many other aspects, says an expert. Sanchita Kalra, Wedding Planning Expert at ShaadiSaga.com, lists down a few steps that the would-be bride should keep in mind before preparing for her big day.

Time of your functions: You’re having the wedding functions at the beach, make sure you pick the right month. Avoid summers or monsoons because not only will you be feeling hot and humid in your wedding attire but also your family and friends who will be running around doing most of the work for you! And when you have decided the season for the wedding, set the time of every function too. For the beach wedding, it is best to get married when the sunlight is not too harsh. Therefore, sunset is the

best time to get pretty pictures! Don’t forget to carry sunglasses! Deciding the outfit for beach functions: While picking a wedding outfit, make sure you go for something light both in color as well as the fabric. Also, hassle-free outfits in pastel colors work extremely well for day weddings. No heels: Heels are a big no-no because they will sink in the sand. And don’t even think of walking barefoot on the sand as it will be very hot. But if you want to add some extra height, opt for wedges because they won’t sink. The ideal

thing to do is to make sure you have the outfits tailored according to your actual height. Hair and makeup: For functions at the beach, you’ll have to apply lots of sunscreen to avoid tanning. Go

for matt lip colors as the glossy ones might make the sand stick on your lips. Also, weather at the beach can become breezy in the evening, therefore, go for an updo hairstyle.

The three-day extravaganza, which took place recently at the Goa Marriott Resort & Spa, saw an exuberant grand finale with an array of designers presenting their collections. “This is one of the biggest seasons till now. The designers have got really good reviews from the buyers and visitors. From the scale point of view, we have gone bigger. We had a pop it up area, live music arena and technology integration. “We went all the way out this season to make sure that we make some sort of benchmark,” Pallav Ojha, Chief Innovation Officer and co-founder, Iconia Leisure and Lifestyle Pvt Ltd Beach worldwide, old IANS here. Apart from Suneet Varma, designers like Anupamaa Dayal, Asif Merchant, Lalit Dalmia, Swap-

nil Shinde and Shyamal & Bhumika came together to present their latest beach, resort and destination bridal wear on the runway. Dayal, who opened the first show, showcased a wide variety of resort wear as part of her line ‘The Endorphins’. The colors that dominated the line included reds, camels and fuschia. Day one was also dominated by the menswear category as designers like Ken Ferns, Amrose D’Souza and Arjun Khanna presented suits, jackets, printed pants, kurtas and pyjamas. The second and third days

were predominantly about destination bridal wear — like gowns, lehengas, salwar kameez and anarkalis. Dalmia stole the show with an off site show at the Miramar beach against a sunset. Titled ‘La Moda’, his men and womenswear collection, which had as many as 25 outfits, saw floor sweeping gowns, dresses, hair fascinators and menswear suits. Designer duo Karan and Leon cast a spell on the audience with their ravishing showstopper ensemble — a white, hand-painted encrusted with Swarovski crystals

esigner Abhinav Mishra, who has opened a new bridal store Leela here, says bridal wear is the primary market or India and the segment is gaining recognition the world over. “In the Indian fashion industry, I see bridal wear as the primary market. We Indians are sentimental owards our traditions and this sentiment keeps the bridal wear market a steady and consistent one. This segment is growing steadily and we are gaining recognition the world over,” Mishra told IANS.

Mishra’s new store at Shahpur Jat here focuses on bridal wear and is a move to expand into this area. Known for his cut mirror-work and dreamy silhouettes, he is growing his label into territories across India

and internationally. Asked how easily a designer’s creation is copied in the local market with majority of them making replicas of bridal wear, he said: “Replication has always been a part of the fashion industry, and now social media has made it even easier. “It has never had a very markable impact on the design market and shall not in the future as long as designers take out authentic, new solutions for the masses. I personally use this as inspiration to do better with each season and create newer and original products.

The range saw bright colored one-piece and two-piece swim wear. Asked why weren’t there many shows dedicated to swim wear, Ojha said: “We do have some great talent when it comes to specific beachwear in the c o u n t r y.

Celebrating togetherness

Go for that fusion feel tonight The new trend emerging in the wedding wear market is to mix and match Indian and western fashion sensibilities and create a true fusion feel, say experts IANS, NEW DELHI

W

eddings are a grand celebration with bright colors, textured fabrics and beautiful prints dominating the bridal wear. However, another trend emerging in the wedding wear market is mixing and matching Indian and western fashion sensibilities to create a fusion feel, say experts. Kabir Mehra and Samarth Hegde from Herringbone & Sui, a made to measure custom menswear brand, and designer Priyanka Modi from label AM:PM have suggested how. Mehra and Hegde share tips on menswear: n When it comes to day events, big trends for men are subdued pastels, floral motifs, bold prints and brightly colored fabrics with intricate embroidery. When dressing for a daytime function, it is advisable to use lighter kinds of embroidery like pitta and ari which, although they look opulent, are never over the top. To add a contemporary touch, pair a bandi with a T-shirt versus a kurta or with jeans rather than a pyjama.

According the experts, the use of luxurious fabrics like velvet, silk and organza are great this season.

n For black-tie events, a band-

hgala made out of 100 per cent velvet is a good choice. This mix of modern fabric with a traditional silhouette is elegant and sophisticated. Pair this with black braided trousers to create a unique Indian styled tuxedo. Customization have also become very popular with ethnic wear, so changing

the buttons and the lining of your jackets is another way to infuse your outfit with personality. n For another Indo-western option, try Mao jackets made of 100 per cent linen which are light, breathable and very comfortable. These can be paired with cotton trousers or even jeans for a semi-formal or smart casual look. The idea is to

add your own sense of style and personality into everything you wear, whether it be for a wedding or casual lunch. This can easily be done with a few minor changes here and there that will dramatically elevate your entire look.

Priyanka Modi doles out tips on women’s wear: n Our country is a beautiful amalgamation of exotic cultures and diverse personalities. Every bride wants to look different on her big day and likes to portray her individual style in order to stand out. n We as Indians have started appreciating our heritage and textiles and are trying to incorporate them in our daily life; by wearing tissue saris to work with sneakers or pairing a light ghagra with a crop-top for a casual look. n Even bridal silhouettes today are more multi-functional and versatile, making a statement. Some interesting ways to do this are pairing a heavy lehenga with a simple monochrome shirt, or a short jacket (essentially a western silhouette) made using a banarasi weave and worn with either a light lehenga or a palazzo. n Heritage techniques like mukaish and zardozi remain dominant in our couture collection, while the use of pearls and interesting sequins will help add a contemporary flair. Also the use of fabrics are great this season.

Tips for the would-be bride on wedding outfit IANS, NEW DELHI

L

ooking for a wedding outfit can be fun and energizing and is one of the initial steps a bride takes to begin planning her big day. There are a variety of things that go into your big day look, says an expert. Ashima Singh, founder of Ashima Singh design label rolled out a few useful tips for the bride with regard to the wedding fashion: Decide on a vision: In most of the situations nowadays, the bride knows exactly what she wants, right to the smallest details. Sometimes though the bride has no idea what she wants, so it is important that she decides on it first. Try out different silhouettes and patterns before deciding on one.

Get a second opinion: Having a second opinion is always a good idea. Involving a friend, close family member, siblings, or anyone else whose judgement you can trust. Sometimes another person can tell you if the attire is looking stunning on you or should you consider another option. Wear what’s appropriate: Choosing an appropriate shape for your body type is also important. This may become clearer once you actually try on dresses, so try to pick a few styles you would like, rather than just one. This is also about choosing something you feel comfortable in. Break stereotypes: The key trends are lighter silhouettes, pastel palettes and monotone ensembles. Try out different kinds of outfits, not just what’s trending. Another

Brides should avoid going overboard with their make-up and jewelry.

thing is to change the drape of your outfit. Play around with different draping styles, and choose the one that suits you the best and accentuates your look.

Mix it up: Teaming a jazzy lehenga with a subtle choli or settling on a dupatta that has heavy embroidery is in vogue nowadays. Jackets teamed with kurtis and skirts, crop cholis teamed with plain high waist lehengas, sari gowns, and Victorian lehengas are some of the tra-

ditional choices that allow you to stand out. Minimalistic and versatile: Brides should avoid going overboard with their make-up and jewelery. Fresh and effortless make up styles are dominating bridal trends with clean bright looks.

The 19 are part of the faction led by the now jailed AIADMK General Secretary V.K. Sasikala and her nephew T.T.V. Dinakaran. Upset over the coming together of the two major factions of the AIADMK led by Palaniswami and former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, the 19 legislators have submitted a memorandum to Governor C. MLAs had attracted the provision of the anti-defection law. The Dinakaran faction, whose MLAs are now holed up in Puducherry, reacted sharply. A spokesman for the group said this was aimed at preventing more leg-

the Speaker) and this has fallen to 115 without the support of the Dinakaran faction. The Tamil Nadu Assembly has 234 seats. One seat is vacant due to the death of AIADMK leader J. Jayalalithaa. Of the 233 members, the DMK has 89 members, the Congress 8 and the IUML 1. Speaker P. Dhanapal has only a casting vote in a tie. The DMK, Congress and IUML are in an alliance. Earlier, the Supreme Court rejected AIADMK General Secretary V.K. Sasikala’s plea seeking review of its February 14 order restoring her conviction in disproportionate assets case along with her two relatives — V.N. Sudhakaran and J. Elavarasi. The Supreme court had on February 14 this year restored the conviction of Sasikala, Sudhakaran and Elavarasi in the disproportionate assets case.

The case pertains to an agreement with SNC-Lavalin in 1997 to refurbish three hydropower projects, which allegedly caused a loss of Rs 266 crore to the state exchequer. Vijayan was the Electricity Minister in the E.K. Nayanar government when the government-run Kerala State Electricity Board contracted SNC Lavalin to refurbish three hydropower projects in Panniyar, Chenkulam and Pannivasal, following a severe electricity shortage in Kerala. T

he assembly polls in four constituencies falling in Delhi, Goa and Andhra Pradesh witnessed a varied turnout with various contestants including Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar expressing confidence about their victory. Voters turned out in large numbers in the Nandyal seat of Andhra Pradesh, which recorded 80 per cent polling, according to the statistics released by the Election Commission (EC).

Bawana constituency of Delhi saw a turnout of 44.84 per cent - much below the 61.83 per cent in the assembly polls in 2015. The poll percentage for the Valopi seat in Goa was a high 79.80 per cent, but it was still less than the figure of 86.29 per cent in the February elections. State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane is pitted against Congress’ Roy Naik here. The Election Commission used Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in all the polling stations and the counting of votes will take place on August 28.

P

olice in Andhra Pradesh’s Nandyal assembly constituency this week registered a case against YSR Congress Party president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy for his alleged remark that there is nothing wrong if Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is shot dead. On a day when the polling was held for the by-election in Nandyal, police registered a case against Jaganmohan Reddy on a complaint lodged by returning officer Prasanna Venkatesh. On the direction of the Election Commission, the returning officer also issued a warning letter to Jagan, as the leader is popularly known, for violation of the model code of conduct.

Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy

Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwarlal told reporters here on Wednesday evening that the Election Commission had authorized the returning officer to issue the

warning letter. “A police case has also been filed,” he said. Police booked the leader of opposition under various sections of Representation of People’s Act and the Indian Penal Code. Bhanwarlal denied that there was any delay in taking action on the complaint by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). He clarified that they had to follow the due process which included issuing show cause notice, going through the reply and sending the English translation of the speech to the Election Commission. Addressing an election meeting earlier, Jagan had remarked that there is nothing wrong if Chandrababu Naidu is shot dead on road. He was criticizing TDP chief for failing to fulfill his promises.

Chiranjeevi turns 40 on reel As superstar Chiranjeevi completed 40 years in the industry, blood donation camps were conducted in India, the US and the Middle East to celebrate IANS, HYDERABAD

T

o mark completion of 40 years of superstar Chiranjeevi’s film career, his fans have organized blood donation events in India, the United States and the Middle East. Ravanam Swami Naidu, founder president of Akhila Bharata Chiranjeevi Yuvatha, organized 400 blood donation events across India and reached out to the global community to conduct similar activities. Vijay Repalle organized 40 blood donation events in the US in association with American Progressive Telugu Association (APTA), local American and Telugu organizations and with the help of ‘Blood Brothers of Mega Star Chiranjeevi’.

In the following weeks, another 20 blood-donation events have been planned with the help of Blood Brothers of Mega Star Chiranjeevi (in picture).

According to reports from recipient medical institutions, more than 1068 people have been bene-

ficiaries of this massive drive. In the following weeks, another 20 such events have been planned and

nearly 400 people have already pledged their support and willingness to donate blood, said a statement here earlier this week. Chiranjeevi’s actor son Ram Charan said conducting 400 camps in India, 40 in the US and 14 in the Middle East was inspiring. He described the organizers as ‘blood brothers’ of Chiranjeevi. Repalle said the events were conducted so far in 22 different states in the US, in which more than 356 blood donors participated. Redcross representative Tommy Cole expressed his happiness about exceeding the target of the drive. Repalle also expressed gratitude to Swami Naidu and Charan for noticing and recognizing the exceptional achievements and ingenuity of the efforts put forth by fans and APTA.

‘Anando Brahma’ to be remade IANS, CHENNAI

D Manoj gained 20 kg for ‘Okkadu Migiladu’ CHENNAI: Actor Manchu Manoj, who will be seen playing a Sri Lankan leader in his upcoming Telugu-Tamil bilingual Okkadu Migiladu, gained 20 kg to play his part and later shed 10 kg to play a role in another film. “The role of the Sri Lankan leader required me to look huge and overweight. Hence, I gained about 20 kg. After we finished shooting that portion, I went and shot for another film called Gunturodu. In the process, I lost 10 kg to play a student union leader,” Manoj told IANS. The film, slated to hit the screens in September, will release in Tamil as Naan Thirimba Varuven. The story is set in two time periods — 1990 and 2017. “We have captured the tension of Ceylon in the 1990s as realistically as possible. The film is based on an untold true story. It’s a very emotional story and focuses on the lives of those (Eelam Tamils) who die tragic deaths during that period,” he said. Manoj says the film’s screenplay will be much talked about. — IANS

irector Mahi Raghav says remake talks have been initiated for the remake of his latest Telugu release Anando Brahma, a horror comedy which stars Taapsee Pannu in the lead, in multiple languages. “The film is doing extremely well. We are very pleased with the response. We have already been approached for the remake from all the southern languages and Bollywood as well. The process will take a few more weeks,” Raghav told IANS.

Actor Taapsee Pannu

Set in a haunted house, the film revolves around four characters with some flaws. In an entertaining twist, the ghosts in the film are afraid of humans and this angle has worked wonders for the film at the box office. According to the film’s US distributor Nirvana Cinemas, Anando Brahma has minted $300,000 from its opening weekend. Produced by 70 mm Entertainments, the film also stars Vennela Kishore, Shakalaka Shankar, Srinivas Reddy and Tagubothu Ramesh.

BRIEFS: ‘Thaana..Kootam’s’ song to be shot in Croatia CHENNAI: The makers of Suriya starrer upcoming Tamil film Thaana Serntha Kootam will be heading to Croatia later this month to shoot a song, a source Suriya said. “Except for the song and patchwork, most of the shoot has been completed. After contemplating a few locations, the team decided to shoot the song in Croatia,” a source from the film’s unit told IANS. The film, produced by Studio Green, marks the first-time collaboration of Suriya and director Vignesh Shivan.

Arya to make Kannada debut with ‘Rajaratha’ CHENNAI: Tamil actor Arya, best known for films such as Boss Engira Bhaskaran and Settai, is making his Kannada debut in upcoming film Arya Rajaratha in a crucial role, its director Anup Bhandari said. “He plays a crucial role and we are glad he accepted our offer. He joined the sets last weekend and it has been a pleasure working with him. I can’t talk too much about his role at the moment because then I would be giving away the plot,” Bhandari told IANS. Known for helming the criticallyacclaimed Kannada thriller Rangitaranga, Bhandari’s new film will be simultaneously shot in Telugu as well. — IANS

‘VIP 2: Lalkar’: High on drama, low on emotions Film: “VIP 2: Lalkar”; Director: Soundarya Rajinikanth; Cast: Dhanush, Kajol, Amala Paul, Ritu Verma, Balaji Mohan, Samuthirakani, Vivek Rating: **1/2

T

his film suffers from sequel fatigue but unlike its prequel, this is not really an underdog story. Taking off from where it left in its prequel, the 2014 released VIP, it is the tale of the jobless, yet conscientious engineer, Raghuvaran (Dhanush). He is now married to his neighborhood sweetheart and is humility personified. He is still working for Anitha Constructions, commutes

Actors Kajol, Dhanush and director Soundarya Rajinikanth during ‘VIP 2’ promotion.

on his favorite moped whom he calls “Soundari” and becomes a brave-heart after a couple of drinks. The film begins with him winning the prestigious, “Engineer of the Year Award”, at a shoddily presented function, where all the

awards have been predominantly taken by Vasundhara Constructions, a company headed by the snooty and arrogant, Vasundara Parmeshwara (Kajol). After the awards, when he is invited to join Vasundhara Con-

structions, he flatly refuses on grounds of loyalty. Taking offense to this, Vasundhara ensures that he not only loses his job but can’t survive in the city. How Raghuvaran tilts the scales in his favor, forms the crux of this tale. The first half of the narrative meanders with meaningless scenes. It is only ten minutes after intermission, when Raghuvaran gets motivated, by his father and dead mother, that the film gets some semblance of a concrete progression. The dialogues are mundane and rustic. Some peppered with lyrics of the early 1970s Hindi film songs, the director manages to extract empathy from its older audience. The lines lack punch both in weightage and delivery but Dhanush’s antics keep the audience hooked.

‘Bareilly ki Barfi’: An endearing rom-com worth tasting

B

areilly ki Barfi is a sweet and delectable romance which begins on a predictable and somewhat placid note, but takes on an interesting hue owing to the sudden twist the tale embarks upon and turning into a love triangle. Bitti Mishra (Kriti) is the only child of her parents Narottam Mishra (Pankaj) and Sushila Mishra (Seema). The apple of her father’s eye, she is the quintessential tomboy, who works in the electricity department, smokes, drinks, does break dance, stays out late and watches English films all of which her mother disapproves of. Being rejected by boys who come to see her for marriage,

Film: “Bareilly ki Barfi”; Director: Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari; Cast: Ayushmann Khurrana, Kriti Sanon, Rajkummar Rao, Seema Pahwa, Pankaj Tripathi; Rating: ***1/2 becomes her pet peeve as that causes her mother anguish. Dejected, Bitti sets out to leave home. By happenstance, she picks up a book, Bareilly ki Barfi, from the book stall at the station, which changes her life. She returns home and begins her search for the author, Pritam Vidrohi, as she feels the protagonist in his novel is her carbon copy and he is thus some-

one who would understand her. How she uses Chirag Dubey (Ayushmann Khurrana), the publisher of the book, in her quest,

forms the crux of this two hour film. The characters and their lives are introduced to the audience

through a narrative by Javed Akhtar in the beginning of the film. The characters are welletched and developed thoughtfully with consistency. Nitesh Tiwari’s sharp writing laced with humor encapsulates the simplicity and warmth of a small town, which is evident in each scene through his characters. Director Ashwini Iyer Tiwari keeps the characters and their milieu real. It is the ace writing coupled with the strong performances that elevate the viewing experience further. Rajkumar as Pritam Vidrohi is spectacular as he is every inch the small town, timid, boy who leads a basic life.

Grayslake Hindu Mandir marks Janamashtami

BY A STAFF WRITER RAYSLAKE, IL -- Hindu Mandir of Lake County, Grayslake, IL celebrated Shri Krishna Janamashtami on August 150 with a variety of programs to honor the birth of Lord Krishna, one of the most revered incarnations of Lord Vishnu. The event was well attended by thousands of devotees during the day and hundreds of them stayed until after midnight, showing their dedication and devotion to Lord Krishna. The Mandir was decked up all around

G

for the festivities with decorations depicting various aspects of Krishna Avatar and ceiling was decorated with hanging “Haandis (earthen pots)”. All the deities were dressed up in new clothes and ornaments. The star attraction, enjoyed by kids and adults alike was depiction of Krishna’s “Raas Leela” – Lord Krishna dancing with “Gopis” with musicians and artists. The life of Lord Krishna was on display in form of huge posters and cut-outs. In the center of the shrine stood colorfully decorated “Palna” or “Jhoola” (Swing) where Baby Krishna was seated after his birth at midnight.

A major highlight was a “Shobha Yatra”, a procession that went around the Mandir campus with about 20 kids who lovingly dressed as Baby Krishna and Gopi Radha followed by other kids and adults who chanted praises of Lord Krishna. Temple priest Pandit Anil Joshi ji extolled the ideals of Lord Krishna in his discourse and highlighted the coincidence of the festival falling on India’s Independence Day, and touched upon the freedom of devotion and practice of religion. At the stroke of midnight, Lord Krishna’s Avatar was depicted by the priests amidst of

Health fair again at Itasca temple BY A STAFF WRITER TASCA, IL -- A free health fair has been arranged at Midwest Swaminarayan Temple in Itasca, IL on September 10. The fair, one of the temple’s regular annual programs, is the 41st health camp organized by Jayanti Thakkar in Chicagoland. Along with Midwest Swaminarayan Temple, other institutions co-sponsoring the event are

I

Lohana Association of Greater Chicago (LAGC), Gujarati Samaj of Chicago (GSC), Kadva Patidar Samaj of Chicago (KPS), Sahiyaru Abhiyan and Federation of Indian Association(FIA-Chicago). The fair is open to all in need of medical checkup and health-related problems. Preregistration is not required. The checkup will include tests like blood pressure, blood testing, blood sugar, EKG, urine analysis, eye screening,

bone density, etc. About 300 free flu shots will also be given. Beneficiaries have been requested to bring along the list of medicine that they are taking so that doctors can review it and advise properly on medication. At least 25 doctors and 85 health care professionals have volunteered to offer their services for the event.

BY A STAFF WRITER Southern California Indian American man has been sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for defrauding clients seeking babies via surrogacy. Rudy ‘Acharyya’ Rupak, founder of Planet Hospital, must surrender himself to US Marshalls before September 27. He is also ordered to pay $10,000 restitution. “The defendant betrayed the trust placed in him by people desperate to have a child,” said Alana Robinson, acting US Attorney for the Southern District of California, in a statement after the sentencing. FBI Special Agent in Charge Eric Birnbaum noted: “Today’s sentencing is justice overdue for the many victims affected by this defendant’s deceitful practices. Acharyya Rupak can no longer prey upon those desperate to have a family.” According to court documents, Rupak founded Planet Hospital in 2003, to offer “medical tourism” services, in which his clients traveled abroad for medical treatment, including organ transplants and cosmetic surgery.
