Dr Suzanne Dakil, a paediatrician and child abuse expert, had testified before a court earlier that the three-year-old had a series of broken bones and injuries and that the pattern of injuries led her to believe that Sherin Mathews was abused on separate occasions. The Richardson police in a statement on Friday said they were “disappointed” with Sini Mathews’ case dismissal but would continue working with the district attorney’s office “to ensure justice is done”. Talking to reporters after her release from the Dallas County Jail, Sini Mathews said she felt “blessed” to be released and that her time in jail was “challenging”. $5.6 bn trade program for India ends Trump said that he will continue to monitor if India is ‘providing equitable and reasonable access to its markets’ and meet the GSP eligibility criteria the GSP exporting goods worth $5.6 billion to the US under the programme. ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

U

S President Donald Trump has announced that he is ending India’s $5.6 billion trade concessions under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) programme, accusing New Delhi of not providing Washington “equitable and reasonable access” to its markets. Trump, who is on a mission to expand marker access abroad and end trade deficits, made the announcement in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Mike Pence in his capacity as the Senate President. The US Trade Representative’s Office (USTR) said that the preferences will end in 60 days after the notification to Congress and the Indian government. Meanwhile, Trump said that he will continue to monitor if India is

IN BRIEF

US trade deficit soared to $621 billion in 2018 WASHINGTON: US trade deficit soared to $621 billion in 2018, the highest in a decade, data released on Wednesday by the US Department of Commerce showed. The $68.8 billion annual increase, or 12.5 percent, came along with a net loss in goods and services trade of $59.8 billion in December, up 15.2 percent from $51.9 billion in the same period a year earlier. On a month-on-month basis, the December figure, which also hit a 10-year record, is the result of a 2.1 percent rise in imports to $264.9 billion, and a 1.9 percent drop in exports to $205.1 billion, according to the US Department of Commerce. For the whole year, imports surged 7.5 percent from the previous year to $3.12 trillion, while exports jumped 6.3 percent to $2.5 trillion, the data showed, Xinhua reported. In December, the country saw an increase in the goods deficit of $9 billion to 81.5 billion, as well as a decrease in the services surplus of $0.5 billion to $21.8 billion. With regard to specific countries and areas, the charts showed that China still runs the largest trade surplus with the US, trailed by the European Union (EU) and Mexico, according to the US Department of Commerce. —IANS

“providing equitable and reasonable access to its markets” and meet the GSP eligibility criteria. India had opposed proposals to

end the GSP saying that it would be “discriminatory, arbitrary” and hurt the country’s development. India is the largest beneficiary of

rights and combating child labor”. Trump wrote in his letter: “I am taking this step because, after the intensive engagement between the US and the government of India, I have determined that India has not assured the US that it will provide equitable and reasonable access to the markets of India.” The USTR said: “India has implemented a wide

array of trade barriers that create serious negative effects on US commerce”, but did not mention the specifics in its statement. “Despite intensive engagement, India has failed to take the necessary steps to meet the GSP criterion”, it added. The total India-US trade was $126.2 billion in 2017, with a $27.3 billion deficit for the US, according to the USTR. India’s total exports were worth $76.7 billion and the end to GSP affects only a small part of it limited to $5.6 billion. At a hearing held by the USTR on withdrawing India’s GSP, the Minister in charge of Commerce at the Indian Embassy in Washington, Puneet Roy Kundal, said that withdrawing the GSP benefits “would be discriminatory, arbitrary, and detrimental to the development, finance and trade needs of India, which is a vast and diverse developing country with unique challenges”.

Sanders to fight racial, economic injustices IANS, CHICAGO

V

ermont Senator Bernie Sanders has made a passionate bid to win the Democratic nomination for President, promising a fight against racial and economic injustices in the US if he is elected in 2020. Addressing thousands of his supporters on Sunday during his nearly 40 minutes of speech at the Navy Pier’s Festival Hall here, the 77-year-old said his second presidential bid would finish the politi-

cal revolution that began in 2016, Efe news reported. “We have got to do it together by the millions. We are going to finally create an economy and government that works for all and not just the one person,” the Senator said. “Together we are going to create a political system which is based on the democratic principle of one person, one vote and end a corrupt political system in which billionaires are buying elections.” Sanders said his struggle was not

“just about defeating Donald Trump” but to trounce crony capitalism by taking on the “incredibly powerful institutions that control the economic and political life of our country”. He said the fight was against Wall Street, insurance companies, drug companies, the mili-

tary-industrial complex and the prison industrial complex. “Today, I want to welcome you to a campaign which says loudly and proudly that the underlying principles of our government will not be greed, kleptocracy, hatred, authoritarianism and pathological lying.”

US tornadoes: Seven family members among 23 killed IANS, WASHINGTON

S

even members of a family were among the 23 victims identified after an outbreak of tornadoes devastated the US state of Alabama, officials said. Every victim, including four children, was found close to their homes, rescue crews said. The victims range in age from six to 89, Lee County Coroner Bill Harris told a news conference. Up to eight persons remain missing, officials said, and there are fears the death toll could rise, the BBC reported on Tuesday. “We believe that every victim was in the residence when it hit.

A representational image of Tornado (Photo: sott.net)

They all ended up, with the exception of two, outside the residence,” Harris told reporters. He added that one survivor lost

seven members of his family, and warned that he may be facing “financial issues” because of multiple funeral costs.

“They are going to have seven funerals that they have to finance somehow,” he said. However, donors have been reaching out to help the family with the expenses, he further said. The tornadoes struck eastern Alabama on Sunday, leveling homes and carving a path of at least 0.8 km wide in some parts of the state. Temperatures dropped below freezing on Tuesday as volunteer crews sorted through debris, looking for survivors and bodies. On Monday, weather officials upgraded the fatal twister that hit Lee County to EF-4 with wind speeds of 275 kmph.

Rafale documents ‘stolen’ The government urged the Supreme Court to dismiss the plea for recall of the December 14 ruling giving a clean chit to the government on the purchase of 36 Rafale fighter jets IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he federal government on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that documents related to Rafale deal that have appeared in the media and were cited by those seeking a recall of the December 14 ruling giving a clean chit to the government on the purchase of 36 Rafale fighter jets were confidential papers stolen from the Defense Ministry. Referring to the eight-page dissent note by the three members of India Negotiating Team (INT), Attorney General K.K. Venugopal told a bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice K.M. Joseph that it was being probed if the documents were stolen by former or present employees. Post lunch, the Attorney General said no FIR had been registered. He referred to an article in The Hindu on Wednesday by its for-

BRIEFS Amarnath Yatra to begin on July 1 JAMMU: The Amarnath Yatra this year will begin July 1, and go on for 46 days, it was announced here on Thursday. The decision was taken by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB), headed by Governor Satya Pal Malik, at its meeting at the Raj Bhavan here. A SASB statement said that the duration and date of commencement of this year’s Yatra was based on the approach set out by the Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Committee, set up to advise the Board on the pilgrimage’s duration and schedule.

1 killed, 30 injured in Jammu blast JAMMU: At least one person was killed and 30 others were injured on Thursday when a grenade flung under a parked bus by a militant exploded at Jammu’s main bus stand. mer Editor N. Ram related to the note by the three members of INT. The Attorney General took

exception to the newspaper publishing a report on February 8 just prior to the hearing of the

Rafale plea by the top court. “The strategy is that before the hearing of the sensitive case there are newspaper articles to influence the hearing,” Venugopal said, and described it as contempt of court. “The first publication was of which date?” CJI Gogoi asked. AG: February 8. “What have you done? Papers were stolen; first article came on February 8,” the bench said. “Tell us what action you are taking.” Venugopal was asked if the Defense Ministry can file an affidavit stating that the documents published by The Hindu were stolen. He agreed to do so by next week. Venugopal was faced with a number of posers from the bench as he contended that since the documents being relied upon for seeking a review of the December 14 judgment were “stolen” and thus could not be entertained by the court.

He hammered the point that unless the sources of the document was bonafide, known or lawful, the court could not look into it. Disagreeing, Justice Joseph said: “The issue is that the law of the country has been violated. There is allegation of corruption. Can you seek shelter citing national security?” As the Attorney General said that the court can look into it provided the source of information is disclosed, Justice Joseph, apparently disagreeing, said: “You are saying that it can’t be looked into as it is illegally sourced. Even a stolen document can be looked into if it is relevant to the case. “You can’t have a general proposition” that a court is barred from looking into a tainted or stolen document, Justice Joseph added. Referring to the Official Secret Act, the Attorney General persisted that the source of the document had to be disclosed.

Rahul slams Modi for ‘politics’ over Pulwama attack IANS, DHARAMSALA

C

ongress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for playing politics over the Pulwama terror attack which killed 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers on February 14. “The Congress supported the government after the Pulwama attack, but it is sad that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is politicizing the attack,” Gandhi said while addressing a rally in Chambi village in Kangra district, around 15 km from here. Taking a jibe at the Prime Minister over the Rafale deal, Gandhi said

Congress President Rahul Gandhi (Photo: IANS)

Modi was responsible for the “delay in the delivery of Rafale fighter jets” to the Indian Air Force (IAF). His assertions came in the wake of Modi’s statement that the absence of

Rafale fighter jets was hurting India’s defense preparedness. “Prime Minister Modi says Rafale aircraft would have benefited India, but the truth is that the

Indian negotiation team has clearly stated that due to Modi government’s new deal, the delivery of Rafale aircraft is getting delayed.” “Modi got the contract delayed and now he says this delay is hurting India,” Gandhi said. Questioning Modi on demonetization, Gandhi said: “Modi claimed that demonetisation was an attack on black money. If that was true, why did only the honest people suffer in long queues?” “During the Pulwama attack, Adani got contract for five airports. They (the BJP) are dividing the nation into two parts. One where few industrialists benefit and in return help Mr Modi, while the other only gets Mr Modi’s lies.”

Ayodhya temple dispute: SC reserves order on mediation IANS, NEW DELHI

A

five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved its order on sending the contentious Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid Ayodhya title dispute case for mediation even as Hindu parties and the state of Uttar Pradesh opposed the court’s suggestion. The five-judge Constitution Bench of Chief Justice Ranjan

Gogoi, Justice S.A. Bobde, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice S. Abdul Nazeer reserved the order as some of the Hindu parties and Uttar Pradesh sounded sceptical about the outcome of the mediation. “Arguments on the issue of reference to mediation are closed. Arguments concluded. Orders reserved,” the court order said. “It is about mind, hear and healing the relationship. We have read

Return of the political will

India should legitimately demand handing over of Hafiz Sayeed and Masood Azhar for trial as a condition for talks D.C. PATHAK, WASHINGTON

T

he successful strike made by a dozen Mirage 2000 jets of the Indian Air Force on Feb 26 to take out the biggest training camp of Jaish-e-Mohammed at Balakot in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, in just about 10 days after the terror attack on the CRPF at Pulwama, speaks as much of the decisiveness of the Modi regime on the national security front as of all that obviously went into that action by way of defence preparedness, functional consolidation of India's intelligence set-up and a comprehensive diplomatic reach out to the world by our Prime Minister himself on the issue of Pakistan-sponsored terror. For decades now, Pakistan's deep state had been unabashedly pursing a 'proxy war' against India in the name of Kashmir using faith-

based terrorism to avenge the ignominious defeat of 1972 it had suffered at the hands of India in the Bangladesh war. It first instigated militant separatism in Kashmir -through the slogans of Plebiscite and Azadi and also sponsored the armed 'Khalistan' movement in Punjab but could not derail the overpowering democratic processes there. It was in the Nineties that, following the success of anti-Soviet armed campaign in Afghanistan for which Pakistan was given all the credit by the US-led West, the Pak army-ISI combine planned to replicate the Afghan Jehad in Kashmir by sending in Mujahideen from across the Valley and subduing the Kashmiris to the call of Jehad through its agents and acolytes. Jamaat-e-Islami outfits like Hizbul Mujahideen and Dukhtarane Millat were made to take orders from the Pak-based

Lashkar-eToiba chief Maulana Hafiz Sayeed. The Hurriyat totally converted into a Pak proxy. The network of Pak agents within the administration and outside, including those who took shelter under the umbrella of politics was constantly expanded to create an atmosphere of alienation and public unrest. Also, Maulana Masood Azhar's Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), which was an old collaborator of Al Qaeda-Taliban combine -- it was a

constituent along with Taliban of the first set of Mujahideen sent to the valley under the label of Harkatul Ansar way back in 1993 -- was utilised for raising fidayeen or suicide bombers. These were lately being trained for using car bombs. What is more disconcerting is that the Balakot training camp was the venue for raising Border Action Teams comprising of both Jaish militants and army soldiers. The attack on the CRPF convoy at Pulwama was the doing of a Jaish Fidayeen who used a car bomb with over 60 kg of RDX mix. In the current geo-political context, Pakistan is left with no option

but to sue for peace -- its sabre rattling by way of sending some F-16s to unsuccessfully attempt to bomb a military establishment on our side of LOC a day after the Balakot strike, has not taken it anywhere. An Indian pilot intercepting the enemy plane fell in Pak hands. Pakistan was compelled to declare his release after India rightly warned it that any ill-treatment of the pilot would be considered a war provocation. Since India's Pak policy revolves round the issue of Pakistan effectively giving up on cross-border terrorism, India should legitimately demand handing over of Maulana Hafiz Sayeed and Maulana Masood Azhar for trial in 26/11 and Pulwama attack respectively as a condition for talks.

It's advantage Narendra Modi, but... The BJP will make a mistake if it believes that nothing can now stop its victory. The Indian voter is not only one of the most politically savvy in the world, he also has a wide vision AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

C

onsidering that previous governments had backed away from a military response to terrorist provocations from Pakistan -- notably in November, 2008, when a Lashkar-e-Taiba suicide squad attacked Mumbai -the raid by Indian jets on a Jaish-eMuhammed terror camp in Pakistan has shown that India has dropped its policy of strategic restraint. Since the change has taken place under the Prime Minister's leadership, it has reinforced Narendra Modi's macho credentials. The political fallout of this image is immense. At one stroke, it has relegated to the background all the domestic issues which were impeding the (BJP) political advancement of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Instead, it has added lustre to the party's claim of being able to

provide a "majboot sarkar" (strong government) in contrast to the opposition's "majboor" (helpless) combine, which will send the country to the ICU (intensive care unit), as the Prime Minister has said in a triumphal vein. No one expressed this jubilant mood better than B.S. Yeddyurap-

pa, the BJP's leader in Karnataka, who said that the latest surgical strike (there was a limited one in 2016) will enable the party to win 22 of the 28 parliamentary seats in the state. Although he has since said that he has been quoted out of context after being told not to use the mil-

itary's achievement for political purposes, few will doubt that the BJP will continue to articulate its claims to be a party of nationalists and doers as the polling days approach. The opposition, therefore, is in a bind. It now realizes that the issues of unemployment, agrarian distress, low investments or Rafale, which constituted its main talking points, will no longer make the kind of impact which they earlier did as the country basks in the sunshine of military glory and diplomatic success. The gains for Indian diplomacy are evident from the way that the international community, including Pakistan's close friends like China and Saudi Arabia, leant heavily on Islamabad to ensure that the military situation did not go out of hand. The BJP, on its part, will be making a mistake if it believes that nothing can now stop its victory

march. The Indian voter is not only one of the most politically savvy in the world, he also has a wide vision which takes into consideration various factors such as caste, the candidate's background and the record of his party. He also has durable ideological commitments which are not swayed by passing events. So, even if it is "Advantage Modi" at present, the results are far from being sealed and delivered in the BJP's favour. It is also worth noting that there is little evidence of a surge in Modi's favour as in 2014 when the Congress was mired in scams and policy paralysis. The touchstone will be the crowds which Modi and Rahul will attract at their election rallies. Modi's will undoubtedly be bigger, as they usually are, but it is from Rahul's meetings that inferences can be drawn about the way the wind is blowing.

N. Korea rebuilding rocket launch site

The work likely began either in the days before, during, or immediately after Kim and Trump ended their summit IANS, WASHINGTON

N

ew satellite images of North Korea suggest it has begun rebuilding a portion of a facility previously used to test long-range missile engines, analysts have said, raising questions about the future of US-North Korea negotiations. The images were taken two days after talks between US President Donald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un ended on February 28, without reaching a deal on denuclearization. Pyongyang had earlier pledged to dismantle the site as a confidence-building measure with Washington. The Centre for Strategic Studies’ Beyond Parallel project and 38 North, both North Korea monitoring websites, said they observed activity at the Sohae site at Tongchang-ri satellite launch facility, dormant since about August of last year, CNN reported.

Huawei sues US government

Seoul proposes trilateral talks with US, N. Korea SEOUL: South Korea on Monday proposed trilateral dialogue with the US and North Korea after denuclearization talks between Washington and Pyongyang collapsed in Hanoi last week. South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said the government in Seoul, to get the nuclear talks back on track, would seek semi-official meetings called “track

1.5” in a multilateral format, which would include representatives from the three countries and civilian experts. Kang said the proposal to hold dialogue in the new format was mooted during a National Security Council (NSC) meeting here on Monday chaired by South Korean President Moon Jae-in, according to Efe news. —IANS

Tongchang-ri is reportedly one of the few known missile component development facilities inside North Korea. According to 38 North, efforts to rebuild the site’s launch pad and missile engine test stand began

sometime between February 16 and March 2, meaning work began either in the days before, during, or immediately after Kim and Trump abruptly ended their second summit in Vietnam on February 28 without signing a deal.

Beyond Parallel reported there had been “activity” at a vertical engine test pad and a launch pad’s rail-mounted rocket transfer structure. It said that the activity was “deliberate and purposeful”. The Central Intelligence Agency declined to comment on the photographs, CNN said. The news came a day after the US warned that North Korea could face yet more sanctions if it not take steps to denuclearize.

Bolsonaro criticized over obscene video

In an interview with FOX Business Network, US National Security Adviser John Bolton said Washington would see whether the Pyonyang was still serious about the negotiations and was committed. “If they’re not willing to do it... they’re not going to get relief from the crushing economic sanctions that have been imposed on them and we’ll look at ramping those sanctions up in fact,” Xinhua news agency quoted Bolton as saying. another person in front of a crowd of revellers in what appears to be downtown Sao Paulo. “I don’t feel comfortable showing it, but we have to expose the truth so the population are aware,” said the president to his 3.46 million followers. “This is what many street parties in the Brazilian Carnival have turned into,” he added, inviting people to “comment and reach their conclusions”. Some 35,000 comments followed. They included critics of the president, personalities and even people who said were his supporters and condemned his decision to post the video.

SHENZHEN: Chinese technology giant Huawei on Thursday said it has filed a lawsuit against the US government as a “last resort” to get a federal ban on the use of its products lifted. The lawsuit, filed in a US District Court in Plano, Texas, challenges the constitutionality of Section 889 of the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which was signed by President Donald Trump in August last year.

KABUL: At least 16 people were killed on Wednesday as militants attacked a private construction firm in Afghanistan’s Jalalabad city, officials said. “The attack on MQ building company, located close to Nangarhar airport, began at around 5 a.m. and lasted for over five hours,” said Attaullah Khogyanai, spokesman for the Nangarhar provincial Governor’s office. “Sixteen employees of the company were martyred and nine more were injured”, Khogyanai said, adding that five militants were also killed, Efe news reported. audi Arabia’s powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who was in India recently and is known to share good ties with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is rumored to be on a collision course with his father King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The development holds the prospect of derailing some of the reforms initiated by the ambitious Crown Prince, referred to as “MBS”. It is not known what has triggered the reported clash. plain spoken acolyte-turned-dissident of the MBS regime who worked for the Washington Post. Khashoggi’s body was never found and the reclusive kingdom,

out of which news of the rulers comes only in driblets, has been on a long damage limitation exercise. It is said that King Salman’s intervention in the matter has restored a

semblance of order in the matter. India would be watching the developments with interest and some unease. When the Saudi Crown Prince was in India in February, the joint statement said terrorism and extremism was a common threat to both the nations. The Saudis, for their part said they would cooperate with India on every aspect, including intelligence sharing. It is believed that the invitation extended to India to address the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) in Abu Dhabi recently showed the success of Modi’s diplomatic outreach in finding support within the Arab world for India’s battle against Pakistan-based terror.

ashington is taking a close look at reports that Pakistan used US-supplied F-16 fighter jets in the recent confrontation with India, according to State Department Deputy Spokesperson Robert Palladino. “We’ve seen those reports and we’re following that issue very closely” Palladino told reporters at a Department briefing on Tuesday in Washington. “We’re taking a look and we’re going to continue to take a look”. However, he added that he could not confirm anything because “as a matter of policy, we don’t publicly comment on the contents of bilateral agreements that we have in this regard involving US defence technologies nor the communications that we have with other countries about that”. “We reiterate our call for Pakistan to abide by its UN Security Council commitments to deny terrorists sanctuary and to block their access to funds”, Palladino said. He said that a “lot of” private diplomacy was taking place between US and India and Pakistan in addition to ongoing highlevel contacts through the embassies in Washington and in New Delhi and Islamabad to ease the tensions. On Thursday, Air Vice Marshal R.G.K. Kapoor said in New Delhi that Pakistan sent F-16s, JF-17 Thunders and Mirages last Wednesday to the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir and an F-16 was shot down by the Indian Air Force (IAF). The IAF showed a piece of an AMRAAM missile which landed in an Indian military compound when Pakistan launched an attack along the LoC. Of the jets in Pakistan’s arsenal, the AMRAAM can be used only with F-16. The IAF also said it identified F-16s operat-

JeM doesn’t exist in Pak, says military ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan military has claimed that Maulana Masood Azhar’s Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) that claimed responsibility for the Kashmir suicide bombing which killed 40 CRPF personnel “doesn’t exist in the country”. Major General Asif Ghafoor, the Director General of the Army’s media wing Inter-Services Public Relations

(ISPR), made the remarks while talking to CNN. Asked if Pakistan will make an “increased effort” in the aftermath of the February 14 Kashmir bombing that was claimed by JeM, Ghafoor said: “First of all, that claim has not been made from within Pakistan because Jaish-e-Mohammad does not (formally) exist in Pakistan. It has been

the sorties against India, but did not identify the planes used. On Monday, Pakistan’s Ambassador Asad Majeed Khan said at a Washington think tank, “I am not aware of request from the US side

about the F-16s. At his briefing, Palladino said that the US continues “to urge both sides to continue to take steps to de-escalate the situation, and that includes through direct communication”. He said that in Hanoi last week Secretary of State Mike Pompeo “led diplomatic engagement directly, and that played an essential role in de-escalating the tensions between the two sides”. “He spoke with leaders in both countries, and that included the Indian Minister of External Affairs (Sushma) Swaraj, National Security Advisor (Ajit) Doval, and Pakistani Foreign Minister (Shah Mehmood) Qureshi”, Palladino added. After Pompeo’s round of talks with Indian and Pakistani leaders on Wednesday night, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan announced on Thursday that he was returning Varthaman to India. Short for Advanced MediumRange Air-to-Air Missile, AMRAAM missiles were obtained by Pakistan from the US in 2010. Its manufacturer Raytheon says that it has an “advanced active guidance” system and its design “allows it to quickly find targets in the most combat challenging environments”. Pakistan has bought several batches of F-16 planes since 1982, and 85 of the jet made by Lockheed Martin Corp are estimated to be in the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) fleet. In 2016, US Congress ended subsidies for F-16 sales to Pakistan. US-Pakistan military ties are faltering because of Islamabad’s continued support for terrorists. President Donald Trump cut $300 million in military aid to Pakistan in September 2018, saying it was not doing enough to rein in terrorists attacking Afghanistan, as well as US troops there. Earlier, Congress had removed $500 million in funds given to Pakistan for supporting the operations of the US and its allies in Afghanistan.

he madrasa run by Jaish-eMohammed (JeM) at the Balakot site hit by the Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter planes appears to be still standing with no visible damage, as per high-resolution satellite images of the site, says news agency Reuters. It says at least six buildings were visible on the site on March 4, six days after the air strike, and that the image was virtually identical to an April 2018 satellite photo of the facility. The satellite images from San Francisco-based private satellite operator Planet Labs Inc are the first high-resolution satellite images publicly available and show details as small as 72 cm. “There are no discernible holes in the roofs of buildings, no signs of scorching, blown-out walls, displaced trees around the madrasa or

other signs of an aerial attack. The images cast further doubt on statements made over the last eight days by the Indian government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the raids, early on Feb 26, had hit all the intended targets at the madrasa site near Jaba village and the town of Balakot in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province,” the Reuters report said. Twelve days after a JeM suicide bomber killed 40 CRPF troopers, India said it had struck the JeM’s biggest training camp at Balakot killing “a very large number” of terrorists and their trainers. While Pakistan admitted that the IAF planes struck Balakot, it claimed that they returned when it scrambled its war planes and that there were no losses on the ground. However, IAF chief B.S. Dhanoa said the IAF planes had hit their target.

121 detained, 182 madrasas seized ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday said that law enforcement agencies took 121 people into preventive detention and seized 182 madrasas as part of its continuing crackdown on terror groups. The operation began amid tensions between India and Pakistan after the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) claimed responsibility for the February 14 Kashmir suicide attack that killed 40 CRPF troopers. The incident resulted in mounting pressure from the international community on Islamabad to act on terrorist groups based on its soil. Pakistan said that its action against terror groups was not taken under any pressure.

On a serious note, the actress said: “It is a special day and it is a supremely special plan from the team of ‘Brahmastra’. We are excited about it.” Filmmaker Karan Johar, who is producing the film under his Dharma Productions banner, also tweeted: “Tonight, the Kumbh Mela is going to be a lot more magical.” Brahmastra, releasing this Christmas, is a fantasy adventure trilogy. When asked if she planned to join politics or to participate in an election campaign, Kangana said: “I don’t have any intention to join politics or an election campaign of a political party. Many people feel that I want to enter politics but that’s not true.” “There are few actors in our industry like Ranbir Kapoor where he has been seen talking in an interview that ‘We have a regular supply of water and electricity at my home so, why should I comment about politics?’… This is irresponsible behavior and I am not that kind of person,” she said while interacting at the success party of Manikarnika - The Queen

BRIEFS ‘Uri’ inches close to Rs 250 crore mark MUMBAI: Vicky Kaushal-starrer Uri: The Surgical Strike, based on the Indian commandos’ action following the 2016 attack, is inching close to the Rs 250-crore mark at the box office, according to trade analysts. The film, which released on January 11, raked in Rs 240 crore this week, and has crossed the lifetime business of 2018’s film ‘Simmba’, says trade expert Taran Adarsh. “Uri...’ continues its incredible run. Pak reinstates ban on Indian content ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Supreme Court has reinstated a ban on the airing of Indian content on local television channels. The top court set aside an earlier ruling by the Lahore High Court (LHC) and reinstated a 2016 policy of the federal government banning the transmission of Indian content on local television channels, Geo News reported this week. A counsel of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) appeared in the apex court as a three-judge bench headed by Justice Gulzar Ahmad heard the case. “On October 19, 2016, PEMRA imposed a complete ban on airing Indian content on local television channels,” the counsel for the regulatory authority said. —IANS

‘Luka Chuppi’: Strong performances elevates this entertainer

S

et in Mathura, Director Laxman Utekar’s Luka Chuppi is a straight-laced, frothy romcom that panders to the concept of a “live-in-relationship”. You never know where the heart is going to lead, and often, it is to the most inappropriate places. This is what happens when Guddu Shukla (Kartik) the anchor of a local cable channel, professes his love to Rashmi (Kriti), the daughter of a local politician Trivediji (Vinay), who is not commitmentphobic but a cautious young lady of today’s generation. She unabashedly tells him that she would want to indulge in a “live-in-relationship” to test their compatibility, before committing

to get married. Left with no choice and on the suggestion of their mutual friend, Abbas (Aparshakti), the two go to Gwalior and start “living together” claiming to be

married. How their relationship unspools to their respective families, forms the crux of the tale. The writing by Rohan Shankar,

rarely misses the rom-com beat despite its predictable and meandering plot that drags. It is not a wickedly humourous narrative, but yes the film has its moments of fun and thrill, with situational and slap-stick comedy. The dialogues are colloquial, witty and laced with the right amount of funniness that is relatable. What keeps you glued to the screen, are the unfaltering performances by the abled cast in well-

etched characters. While Kartik as Guddu is charismatic and Kriti as Rashmi is charming, their onscreen chemistry is perfunctory, nevertheless they bring the right amount of energy and realism to their characters, playing their roles with convivial ease and flourish. The pair is ably supported by a plethora of actors, who are impressive and true to the characters they portray. On the directorial front, some scenes were not astutely crafted, especially the prologue, the denouement and the scenes with the nosy neighbor in Gwalior. The sermonizing at the end too, appears forced. —Troy Ribeiro

I have been called ‘Cobra’ for my entire life. When I was child, I used to cry and request to change my name but today, I feel proud of my name. I feel so comfortable with my own identity,” she said.

A

s a sea of memes hit the social media world on how Anil Kapoor is reverse aging in terms of his looks, the veteran actor says the secret to his youthful look at 62 is happiness “inside and outside”. Anil recently posted his photo along with the cast of film Malang. He looked so fresh that he could give any of the younger actors a run for their money. When cricketer Harbhajan Singh joined Anil’s fans in asking what the actor eats to look like a 26-year-old, Anil tweeted: “Happy on the inside and outside! The secret is dedication and hard work (and a few cheat days.)”

Kubbra was interacting with the media at a brand campaign launch. She appeared in several movies like Sultan, Ready and more but earned fame with the portrayal of Kuckoo in Netflix show Sacred Games. Sharing her views on women’s situation in the society, Kubbra said she feels physical barriers, certain conceptions are not limited to any gender.

Kangana slams Ranbir over politics

A

ctress Kangana Ranaut has slammed actor Ranbir Kapoor for not taking a stand on the country’s politics and other issues. When asked if she planned to join politics or to participate in an election campaign, Kangana said: “I don’t have any intention to join politics...Many people feel that I want to enter politics but that’s not true. There are few actors in our industry like Ranbir Kapoor where he has been seen talking in an interview that ‘We have regular supply of water and electricity at my home so, why should I comment about politics?’...you are living in your luxurious home and you are travelling in your Mercedes. So, how can you talk like that? This is irresponsible behavior.”

Has to be war against terror: John

A

ctor John Abraham on Monday said action needs to be taken against terrorism instead of waging a war against a country or religion. At the trailer launch of his upcoming film titled “RAW (Romeo Akbar Walter)”, based on the real life story of a spy, the actor was asked about the escalating tension between India and Pakistan post the February 14 Pulwama attack. John said: “There has to be a war against terror (ism) and not against a country or any religion. I am very clear with my outlook on that. “I am not one of those actors who will say that ‘People will like this, so let’s do it’. I say things as it is. These days, polarization is happening and that is dangerous.”

ersatile actor Ayushmann Khurrana, who has embraced a gamut of onscreen characters — from a sperm donor to a blind man — will next be seen essaying the role of a police officer in filmmaker Anubhav Sinha’s “Article 15”. Sinha unveiled the film’s first look recently. Ayushmann said in a statement, “I’m always intrigued by the socio-political situation of our country. We hardly see films which present the situation in an unbiased way.

ctress Tina Dutta, who alleged that her Daayan co-star Mohit Malhotra touched her inappropriately during the shoot of their show, says they have now “ironed out the differences”. “Mohit and I have ironed out the differences. We have concluded to make a new start. I don’t have any issues working with him. Our on-screen chemistry works for the show and (we) shall maintain a professional environment for the betterment of the show,” Tina, popular for the show Uttaran, said in a statement. “I am happy that our audience has liked the show (Daayan) and I am sure this new start will be appreciated by all,” she added. Tina had earlier claimed that Mohit was warned by the makers to keep his behavior in check. — All stories from IANS

A

brilliant century by skipper Virat Kohli and a disciplined bowling effort saw India defeat Australia by eight runs in the second One-Day International (ODI), here on Tuesday. India now have a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Chasing a target of 251 runs, the visitors were dismissed for 242 runs in 49.3 overs. Asked to bat first, the hosts were bowled out for 250 runs in 48.2 overs. Despite Kohli’s century and a disciplined innings from Vijay Shankar, most Indian batsmen failed to rise to the occasion. Coming in to bat after Rohit Sharma was dismissed in the very first over, Kohli batted almost till the end, scoring 116 runs off 120

balls with 10 boundaries studding his patient innings. Vijay scored 46 off 41 deliveries before being run out. Put in to bat, India lost their first wicket in the opening over when opener Rohit Sharma (0) was sent packing by pacer Pat Cummins. The fall of Rohit’s wicket brought Kohli. He along with Shikhar Dhawan (21) played sensibly but just when it seemed good, Dhawan was adjudged leg before wicket off part-time spinner Glenn Maxwell in the ninth over with scoreboard reading 38 runs. New batsman Ambati Rayudu (18) also failed this time and was dismissed in the 17th over by experienced spinner Nathon Lyon. Kohli and Vijay then joined hands and forged a crucial 81-run part-

ICC welcome to take T20, ODI World Cup out of India for tax exemption: BCCI MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in the recent ICC quarterly meeting was told by the world body to get tax exemption for conducting future global events like the 2021 T20 World Cup and 2023 ODI World Cup. If BCCI fails to get the exemption, it will have to bear the tax liability in hosting the showpiece events. But the move has not gone down well with certain sections within the board. Speaking to IANS, a senior BCCI official said that the ICC was free to

move the tournament out of India if it felt that was the way forward as matters related to tax needed the government’s approval. “We will abide by what the Tax Department and the Ministry decides on this. We would love for the World Cup to take place here, but if the ICC wants to play hard ball, they must be ready for everything. “If they want to take ICC tournament out of India, it’s fine. Let BCCI then take the revenue out of the ICC and see who loses more.”

Vijay played 41 balls and slammed five boundaries and one six. The middle order, comprising Kedar Jadhav (11), Mahendra Singh Dhoni (0) and Ravindra Jadeja (21), failed. But Kohli completed his century before getting out in the 48th over by Cummins.

he International Cricket Council (ICC), here on Saturday evening, turned down the BCCI’s request for isolation of Pakistan from the global cricket community. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had in a letter to the ICC, following the Pulwama terror attack by Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed, demanded that the international cricket com-

munity sever cricketing ties with nations from where “terrorism emnates”. However, the ICC board at its meeting refused to accept the BCCI request. “The ICC has made it clear that this request cannot be implemented, as of now. The ICC did concede to our demands on security at the World Cup, but refused to accept this demand of ours,” a BCCI official said. Several former cricketers, like

Pak captain for World Cup Sarfraz Ahmed

Sourav Ganguly and Harbhajan Singh and former officials like Rajiv Shukla, had demanded that India should boycott the June 16 World Cup match against Pakistan and persuade the international cricket community to isolate Pakistan.

‘REGIONAL ASPIRATIONS FIRST’ India is a diverse nation and will never progress till regional aspirations are met, says Narendra Modi during a public rally in Tamil Nadu IANS, CHENNAI

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday stressed that a diverse India will not progress if regional aspirations are not fulfilled and said that only the BJP-led NDA can do this. Addressing a public rally near here along with leaders of the BJP allies, Modi also announced the renaming of the Chennai Central Railway Station as Dr. M.G.R. Railway Station. He also said that announcements will be made in Tamil on flights originating from and departing to Tamil Nadu. “India is a diverse nation. India will never progress till regional aspirations are met,” said Modi, days after the Bharatiya Janata Party became a formal member of

Telangana SIT to probe data theft HYDERABAD: The Telangana government on Wednesday constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the data theft case involving an IT firm which provides services to Andhra Pradesh’s ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP). The SIT will take up the case registered against IT Grids for allegedly misusing the sensitive data of the citizens of Andhra Pradesh. The Home Department said the SIT was constituted since the case requires expertise in investigation of cyber crimes involving various technologies and the probe has to be conducted in different places other than Cyberabad.

the AIADMK-led alliance. He said the Congress and its allies can never meet regional aspirations because it had a culture of “high

command” that catered to the Gandhi family. Modi said the Congress had insulted strong regional leaders

and cited as example the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Congress leader K. Kamaraj. According to Modi, Kamaraj’s crime was that he spoke for the people and he was insulted by the Congress for that. “If there is one party that has abused Article 356 repeatedly, it is the Congress. If the dynasty does not like the leader, the government is dismissed.” He said the Congress imposed Article 356 many times, with 50 state governments dismissed by the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi alone. “The democratically elected government of MGR (M.G. Ramachandran) was dismissed by the imposer of Emergency because of political difference. Even DMK was a victim of Congress hatred for regional aspiration. For DMK, opportunism

prevailed over values,” Modi said. Earlier, accusing the Congress of delaying infrastructure projects and development schemes in Karnataka’s northern district, Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed credit for completing them during the last five years. “The Congress, which ruled this backward district for decades, could not complete many projects and schemes. But since you elected me as Prime Minister in 2014, I hastened to complete them,” Modi told a BJP rally in Kalaburagi, about 600 km north of Bengaluru. Referring to the income tax exemption up to Rs 5 lakh, announced in the Interim Budget for fiscal 2019-20, Modi said that tax free income gave relief to thousands of lower and middle class families.

U

Athawale. Mumbai North-East is currently represented by the BJP’s Kirit Somaiya, while Mumbai South-Central is held by Shiv Sena’s Rahul Shewale. Both parties are not keen to give up their respective seats in the country’s commercial capital in favor of Athawale, and reportedly even elsewhere in the state, which has 48 Lok Sabha constituencies, the second-highest in the country after Uttar Pradesh’s 80. he Supreme Court should probe the audio conversation in which state Health Minister Vishwajit Rane reportedly said that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar at a December Cabinet meeting had said that documents linked to the deal are in his bedroom, the state Congress said. The suggestion from Goa Congress chief Girish Chodankar came on a day when the Central government informed the apex court that some files related to the Rafale deal were stolen. Addressing a press conference at the state Congress headquarters, Chodankar also said that the first lead for any investiga-

tion about the “stolen Rafale files” should start from the Chief Minister Parrikar’s bedroom. “One Cabinet Minister has said the CM claimed that all these

Chodankar said the first lead for any investigation should start from Parrikar’s bedroom (Rafale) files are in his bedroom and that audio was out. But now it is almost one-and-half months but no one has filed a police complaint. That means what they are saying in the Supreme Court has a

link to Goa and to that audio,” Chodankar told reporters. An audio clip featuring Rane and a local journalist -- where the former claimed that Parrikar in a December 2018 Cabinet meeting admitted to possessing a stash of files related to the Rafale deal -- had created ruckus in Parliament last month. Rane later said that the tape was “doctored”, while Parrikar maintained that no such conversation occurred during the Cabinet meeting. Although Rane had also demanded a probe by security agencies both at the Centre and in the state into the doctoring of audio, no such formal inquiry has been initiated by the state government to date.

decade after an American was “first” cured of HIV using stem cell transplant, a British man has experienced sustained remission from the disease for over an year, after receiving a similar transplant of virus-resistant cells raising prospects of a cure, said doctors, including one of Indian-origin. The new “London patient” — who prefers to remain anonymous — was treated with stem cell transplants from donors with a rare genetic mutation known as CCR5delta 32, which made him resistant to HIV, just like the first cured case of Timothy Ray Brown, better known as the “Berlin patient”. ‘Earphone users may suffer hearing loss’

KOLKATA: Experts have urged everyone to get themselves checked to prevent unsafe listening practices, with the World Health Organization (WHO) estimating a rising trend of hearing impairment across the globe. “Earlobes have two important functions - localization of sound and reflecting the unwanted sound. Using earphones, one bypasses them. We think we are hearing very well, but today’s earphone users are going to be tomorrow’s hearing aid users,” said Sudipta Chandra, ENT, head and neck cancer specialist. However, there is no significant study that can provide a fixed duration of hours of earphone usage that is safe. Using headphone and portable speakers are fine if the volume is below 85 decibels. As per a WHO estimate, there were 466 million persons in the world with hearing loss in 2018 and the figure is likely to increase to 630

million by 2030. Also, 1.1 billion young people are at risk due to unsafe listening practices. “...People should act immediately as loss of hearing is preventable, curable and treatable,” another ENT specialist MN Bhattacharya said. He explained that getting an early screening can prevent hearing loss. By curable, Bhattacharya meant that the person can hear normally after a small operation or through medication. The problem can also be treated using a hearing aid. “In the developed countries Newborn Hearing Screening is mandatory and it is slowly catching up in the country,” Bhattacharya said. Oto Acoustic Emissions (OAE) and brainstem evoked response audiometry (BERA) are the two tests that can evaluate hearing. Later, he went without drugs to test whether he was truly in HIV-1 remission. The London patient has now been in remission for 18 months, and doctors have confirmed that his HIV viral load remains undetectable, the report said. Similarly, the Berlin Patient had been living with HIV and routinely using antiretroviral drugs when he was diagnosed with a different disease called acute myeloid leukemia — cancer of the blood and bone marrow. After two bone marrow transplants, Brown was considered cured of his HIV-1 infection.

ir pollution, both outside and inside home, is a silent and invisible prolific killer responsible for premature death of 7 million people each year, including 600,000 children, according to a UN expert on environment and human rights. According to David R. Boyd, UN Special Rapporteur, more than 6 billion people, one-third of them children, are regularly inhaling air so polluted that it puts their life, health and well-being at risk. “Every hour, 800 people are dying, many after years of suffering, from cancer, respiratory illnesses or heart disease directly caused by breathing polluted air. Yet, this pandemic receives inadequate attention as these deaths are

‘Night shifts can raise risk of early menopause’ IANS, TORONTO

W

omen who work in night shifts, even occasionally, are at an increased risk of early menopause, which can heighten the possibility of developing cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and memory problems, finds a new study. The study showed women who had done continued night shifts for 20 months or more in the preceding two years had a nine per cent increased risk of early menopause, the Daily Mail reported. If they had done rotating night shifts for more than 20 years, the

Stress hormones are believed to disrupt sex hormones. (Photo: IANS)

risk rose to 73 per cent. “For women who went through menopause before the age of 45, shift work seemed to be particularly important. This could be due to disruption of their circadian

rhythms, stress or fatigue, although more research is needed,” lead author David Stock, from the University of Dalhousie in Canada, was quoted as saying. An early menopause could also come from the stress of working late at night, as stress hormones are believed to disrupt sex hormones like oestrogen. This could also increase the chance that a woman stops ovulating, according to the study published in the journal Human Reproduction. Previous evidence suggests working in ‘high-strain’ jobs and those with ‘difficult schedules’ is linked to earlier menopause.
