Hillary comes up trumps in first presidential face-off Clinton and Trump sparred over jobs, taxes, the Islamic State, guns and the former secretary of state’s undisclosed emails IANS, NEW YORK
U
S Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, looking poised and in control, came up trumps in the first presidential debate against her Republican rival Donald Trump as both clashed on job cuts, tax payments, rise of the Islamic State and racism in the most anticipated televised faceoff of the election campaign. Clinton, whose striking red trouser suit lent her an added air of professionalism and capability, effectively countered Trump on several issues and cornered the New York businessman on his personal tax returns and business dealings and for peddling a “racist lie” about US President Barack Obama. The former Secretary of State was declared the winner of September 26 presidential debate by 62 per cent of voters who tuned in to watch, while just 27 per cent said Trump had a better night, according to a latest CNN/ORC Poll. The 90-minute debate, the first of three debates, was held on Monday night at Hofstra University, Long Island, New York. Clinton started the debate by asking Trump, looking sober in a sharp black suit with a cobalt blue tie, “How are you, Donald” as the

crowd cheered — in spite of being cautioned against doing so. The debate centered around three broadly defined topics: America’s Direction, Achieving Prosperity and Securing America. It was split into six 15-minute segments. Two minutes was allotted to answer a question asked by moderator Lester Holt, two minutes to reply and the remaining time for the nominees to debate.
Trump, who started with a calm pace and deliberately measured tone, appeared to lose his composure as Clinton repeatedly referred to him as “Donald” and needled him on his business and wealth. “There’s something he’s hiding,” Clinton said, after Trump said he won’t release his tax returns because he is being audited. She countered that one reason he has refused to declare it may be
because he would have paid nothing in federal income taxes. Trump said: “That makes me smart.” Trump remains the first Republican nominee since 1980 to not release his tax returns. Trump tried to corner Clinton, saying he would release his tax information when she produces more than 30,000 emails that were deleted from the personal server she used when secretary of state.
As Trump targeted Clinton for being a “typical politician: all talk, no action”, she retorted: “Words matter when you run for president, and they really do matter when you are president.” “I think Donald just criticized me for preparing for this debate. And yes, I did. You know what else I did? I prepared to be president,” she added, never once looking flustered during the debate. Clinton accused Trump of racism for questioning President Obama’s citizenship. “He has a long record of engaging in racist behavior. And the birther lie was a very hurtful one,” she said. Clinton, who is also the first woman presidential candidate representing a major US political party, said her economic plan would create 10 million jobs, while Trump’s plan would cost the nation 3.5 million jobs. On employment in the US, Trump said China and Mexico were “stealing” American business and jobs. “We have to stop our jobs from being stolen from us, we have to stop companies from leaving the United States,” he said. He also threatened to scrap or renegotiate some of the “bad” trade deals like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
Trump says in next debate with Clinton satisfied about debate, Clinton, he will ‘hit her harder’ rejects Trump complaints WASHINGTON: US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump expressed his satisfaction on Tuesday about his performance in the first debate against Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, and said he will “hit her harder” in their next encounter. “I thought it went really well. I had some hostile questions. That was okay. It was the debate of debates,” EFE news quoted Trump as saying on the television program “Fox & Friends”. Asked if he will change anything in his next debate with Clinton, to be held on October 9 in St. Louis, Missouri, Trump answered that “I may hit her harder in certain ways”. “(Yesterday) I really eased up because I didn’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings.” Trump said that when Clinton pounced on the magnate’s tendency to insult women, he felt like
bringing up “the transgressions of Bill”, a reference to former US President Bill Clinton’s extramarital adventures. But he didn’t do it, he said, because “I didn’t wanna say what I was going to say with Chelsea in the room”. The real-estate magnate said he was proud of having spoken swift and strong in the debate about illegal immigration, the police, law and order, business and jobs, because those are the things he thinks must be dealt with for the good of the country. He also protested on Twitter that moderator Lester Holt asked Clinton “nothing on e-mails. Nothing on the corrupt Clinton Foundation. And nothing on #Benghazi” where four Americans were killed in that Libyan city in 2012 while she was Secretary of State.
NEW YORK: US Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton expressed her satisfaction on Tuesday with the results of the debate the night before, while rejecting the complaints of her Republican rival, Donald Trump, about alleged problems with his microphone. “Anyone who complains about the microphone is not having a good night,” EFE news quoted Clinton as saying in response to the protests voiced by Trump, who after the debate said he had problems with his mic. In a statement to reporters on her campaign aircraft, the former Secretary of State said that the debate served to demonstrate “some very clear differences between us”, for example in everything to do with “temperament and fitness and qualification to hold the most important, the hardest job in the world”.
Clinton said the debate gave viewers the chance to compare their policies as she laid out her “plan for strong growth and fair growth and dealing with family economic issues like affordable childcare and paid family leave and debtfree college — with no real response, no real offer coming from my opponent”. As for Trump, she said that “on several occasions he was making charges and claims that were demonstrably untrue”. She added that she was “offering opinions that I think a lot of people would find offensive and off-putting”. Among other things, Clinton criticized on Tuesday the tax cuts promised by her adversary that she said would “explode” the national deficit and debt and would be a giant gift for the richest Americans, including his own family.

‘SURGICAL STRIKES’ STUN PAK Pak in denial as Indian special forces demolish at least seven launch pads killing nearly 40 terrorists on the LoC; Congress, other opposition parties hail the effort IANS, NEW DELHI
Panic in Punjab border villages
I
ndia said on September 29 it carried out surgical strikes on terrorist launch pads across the LoC inflicting heavy casualties, triggering a sharp warning from Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Eleven days after terrorists killed 18 Indian soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir, Indian Special Forces targeted “some terrorist teams” positioned at launch pads on the Line of Control (LoC), the military announced. “During these counterterrorist operation, significant casualties have been caused to the terrorists and those who support them,” Lt Gen Ranbir Singh, the Director General Military Operations (DGMO), told the media here. The announcement followed a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Pakistan denied any surgical strike by India but admitted to the death of two soldiers in cross-LoC firing by Indian troops. Sharif warned that Pakistan’s “intent for peaceful neighbourhood should not be mistaken as our weakness”. Gen Ranbir Singh said the targeted terrorists had planned “to carry out infiltration and terrorist strikes in Jammu and Kashmir and various other metros in our country. “The operation was basically focussed to ensure that these terrorists do not succeed in their design of infiltration and carrying out destruction and endangering the lives of citizens of our country,” he said. Gen Ranbir Singh said the operation had since ceased. “We do not have plans of further continuation

information”, he said. The Pakistani military said there were no surgical strikes, “instead there had been crossborder fire initiated and conducted by India which is existential phenome-
non. “As per rules of engagement, the same was strongly and befittingly responded by Pakistani troops. The notion of surgical strikes linked to alleged terrorist bases is an illusion being generated by India.” Minutes after India announced the surgical strikes, Prime Minister Sharif denounced what he called was an “unprovoked and naked aggression” by Indian forces. “Our intent for peaceful neighborhood should not be mistaken as our weakness as our valiant forces are fully capable of defending the territorial integrity of our country,” Sharif said. He added that Pakistan can “thwart any evil design made to undermine the sovereignty of Pakistan”. Meanwhile, an Indian soldier who was injured during the September 18 terror attack on the Uri army camp died, taking the total toll of martyrs to 19, officials said.
CHANDIGARH: Anxious villagers on September 30 continued to move out of their villages in Punjab which shares the International Border (IB) with Pakistan as panic gripped the area regarding a possible strike by Islamabad in the wake of the surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army across the Line of Control (LoC). People alleged mismanagement by local authorities at evacuation camps saying that there were hardly any arrangements. Since most village residents are from farming families, the farmers were worried that their standing paddy crop, which is ready for harvest, could be affected if it was not harvested on time. “The crop is ready for harvest. We don’t even know when we will return to do that,” farmer Shamsher Singh said. The Punjab government, following directions from the Ministry of Home Affairs, had ordered evacuation of people to “safer areas” from within the 10-km belt from the IB. Punjab shares a 553-km border with Pakistan. Over four lakh (400,000) villagers in six border districts have been affected due to the evacuation. Many people moved out of the villages to homes of relatives and friends a little away from the border belt. But officials in the border districts said that arrangements were still being made to accommodate people being evacuated from the border villages. —IANS
US urges India, Pak against escalation of tensions IANS, WASHINGTON
F
ollowing the Indian Army’s surgical strikes against terror launch pads across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, the US has called for steps to avoid steps that escalate tensions between India and Pakistan. “Our message to both sides has been the same, in terms of encouraging them to increase communication to deal with this threat and to avoid steps that escalate the tensions,” US State Department spokesperson John Kirby said in the daily press briefing. “I think I’m not going to get into characterising each and every step along the way there,” he said.
Eighteen soldiers lost their lives during the terro attack in Uri.
“But obviously, what we want to see is increased cooperation against what is a very shared common
threat for both countries, and to see steps being taken to deal with it by all sides.”
Stating that the US was following the situation closely, Kirby said: “We also understand that the Indian and Pakistani militaries have been in communication. We believe that continued communication is obviously important to reduce tensions.” Earlier, National Security Advisor Susan Rice spoke to her Indian counterpart Ajit Doval and said that the US has reiterated that Pakistan must “take effective action to combat and delegitimise” UN-designated terrorists and terror groups. Rice spoke to Doval just ahead of the Indian Army’s surgical strikes on terror launch pads across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. In a press statement, US Nation-
al Security Council spokesperson Ned Price said that Rice “strongly condemned the September 18 cross-border attack on the Indian Army Brigade headquarters in Uri and offered condolences to the victims and their families”. “Ambassador Rice affirmed President (Barack) Obama’s commitment to redouble our efforts to bring to justice the perpetrators of terrorism throughout the world,” Price said. “Highlighting the danger that cross-border terrorism poses to the region, Ambassador Rice reiterated our expectation that Pakistan take effective action to combat and delegitimise United Nations-designated terrorist individuals and entities,” she added.

India to boycott Saarc Summit Bangladesh, Bhutan and Afghanistan also with India; Pakistan says ‘unfortunate’ IANS, NEW DELHI
I
ndia has announced it will not attend the Saarc Summit in Islamabad in November, saying that regional cooperation and terror don’t go together. Pakistan has termed the boycott decision as “unfortunate”. India, the largest member of the eight-nation South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc), announced its decision to pull out hours after Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit was summoned to South Block and handed over Pakistan’s “proof of cross-border origin” of the September 18 Uri terror attack. In a statement, India said increasing cross-border terrorist attacks in the region and growing interference in the internal affairs of Saarc member-states “by one country” have created an environment that is not conducive to the successful holding of the 19th Saarc summit. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Vikas Swarup said that India has conveyed to current SAARC Chair Nepal its decision not to attend the summit, for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi was

slated to go. “India remains steadfast in its commitment to regional cooperation, connectivity and contacts but believes that these can only go forward in an atmosphere free of terror.
“In the prevailing circumstances, the government of India is unable to participate in the proposed Summit in Islamabad,” he said in the statement. Swarup said that some other Saarc member-states — Bangladesh,
Bhutan and Afghanistan — have also conveyed their reservation about attending the Islamabad Summit in November 2016. The other countries unwilling to attend are said to be Bangladesh,
Bhutan and Afghanistan, according to sources. The decision to pull out, marking a sharp escalation in India’s attack on Pakistan for sponsoring terror, also comes a day after New Delhi decided to revisit the 56-year-old Indus Waters Treaty, and apportion more water to itself from river waters that have been used by Pakistan for decades. Prime Minister Modi, chairing the meeting on the river waters treaty, is quoted as having said that “blood and water can’t flow together”. India is also planning to revoke the Most Favored Nation status to Pakistan in trade, in another punishing measure. India has been hyping its diplomatic offensive against Pakistan over the past few days, over the latter’s open backing of the Kashmir unrest and specially after the terror attack on an army camp in Uri on September 18 that left 18 soldiers dead. Prime Minister Modi had announced last week during the BJP conclave in Kerala that the sacrifices of the Indian soldiers killed in Uri would not go waste and India will diplomatically isolate Pakistan.
UN must isolate nations India to revisit Indus treaty exporting terror: Sushma IANS, NEW DELHI
UNITED NATIONS: Taking aim at Pakistan’s role in nurturing terrorism, India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj made a stirring call for isolating Islamabad if it does not join a global strategy against the “malevolent” force threatening the world. Warning the world that “we do not know who this Frankenstein’s monster will devour next”, she told the UN General Assembly in Hindi, “If we want to defeat terrorism, there is only one way -- that we unite across our differences, add steel to our resolve and inject urgency in our response”. “And if any nation refuses to join this global strategy, then we must isolate it,” said. Swaraj did not name Pakistan in this part of her speech, but left little doubt who she was referring to. While speaking specifically of relations with Pakistan, she said, “Bahadur Ali is a terrorist in our custody, whose confession is a living proof of Pakistan’s complicity in cross border terror.” Ali was caught during a gun-battle on July 25, in Kashmir’s Kupwara District. “In our midst, there are nations that still speak the language of terrorism, that nurture it, peddle it, and export it,” she said. “To shelter ter-

rorists has become their calling card. We must identify these nations and hold them to account. These nations, in which UN declared terrorists roam freely, lead processions and deliver their poisonous sermons of hate with impunity, are as culpable as the very terrorists they harbour. Such countries should have no place in the comity of nations.” Turning to Pakistan, Swaraj said that India had offered the hand of friendship, and listed a number of initiatives India had undertaken without pre-conditions.
eighing its options to hit back at Pakistan for sponsoring terror, India has decided to revisit the 56-yearold Indus Waters Treaty as Prime Minister Narendra Modi bluntly said that “blood and water cannot flow together”. Using water as a weapon, the government has decided there would no meeting of the Permanent Indus Commission set up to overlook implementation of the treaty till “terror is in the air”, and that India would also take a final call on the unilateral part of suspension of the Tulbul water navigation project in Jammu and Kashmir depending on what Pakistan did next. The two major steps as well as maximizing the flow into India of river waters — used by Pakistan — were decided upon at a meeting of senior officials chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here. The meeting decided that an inter-ministerial commission would be set up to look into various provisions of the bilateral water treaty that was signed in Karachi on September 19,1960, out of Pakistan’s fear that since the source of rivers of the Indus basin is in India, it could potentially cre-

retary S. Jaishankar, Water Resources Secretary Shashi Shekhar and Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Nripendra Mishra. The meeting decided to look at the full utilisation of the waters of the Indus, Chenab and Jhelum, the three western rivers of the Indus water system that flow through Jammu and Kashmir to Pakistan. Around 95 percent of the waters of the three eastern rivers of Sutlej, Beas and Ravi is ustilised by India. Modi needed to show some ‘action’ to angry India Will “surgical strikes” lead to a dangerous escalation in South Asia, a fraught region marked by the least level of regional cooperation among its countries? TARUN BASU, NEW DELHI
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi had to show to the people of India that he could live up to his braggadocio — and he did so when he authorised the “surgical strikes” across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan territory to take out seven terrorist “launch pads” and causing what officials are calling “significant casualties”. What the consequences of this action will be remains to be seen. Right throughout his election campaign, Modi had mocked his
predecessor Manmohan Singh for letting Pakistani transgressions go unanswered, and had said if he came to power, he would throw protocol to the winds and “teach Pakistan a lesson” that it would not forget. In heated campaign rhetoric he had bragged about his “56-inch chest” that any putative enemy needed to fear while his party colleagues, now ministers and senior functionaries in the government, had called for 10 Pakistani heads when one Indian Army soldier was found beheaded on the border. Although the Modi government
has been discussing various “options” that India can take in terms of a “befitting reply” to Pakistan, with senior and influential ruling party leaders even calling “for one tooth, the complete jaw”, Modi knew also that an inflamed Indian public would not be appeased, particularly hardline elements in his own rightist party and its ideological affiliates, unless the government was able to show some kind of muscular, retaliatory action in addition to any other diplomatic or economic measures it may take. Thursday's dramatic announcement of “surgical
strikes” should be seen in that context. This action gives a new dimension to the political and military tensions between India and Pakistan, although Lt Gen Ranbir Singh, India's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO), said the operation had stopped as its objective had been reached. He also said he had called up his Pakistani counterpart to inform him of the Indian action, which meant that the hotline between the two armies was operational to ensure that the cross-borders tensions did not go out of control.
Will this lead to a dangerous escalation in South Asia, a fraught region marked by the least level of regional cooperation among its countries? There is no doubt that the rest of the world is extremely worried about what is happening between the two nuclear-armed neighbors with many wondering if the region is teetering on the brink of what many in the West had described as a “nuclear flashpoint”. There is no doubt that Pakistan is going to weigh the actions it needs to take to publicly appease its own population.

orbhuin Chetia village in Assam’s Sivsagar district could well be mistaken for an open-air zoo, what with large numbers of hornbills flying around and happily pecking away at the fruit on the trees the residents have very thoughtfully planted for them. Not surprisingly, it’s even won a green award. “The hornbills have been living in our village for the last several years. At present there are about 20 of them. They have become a part of the daily lives of the villagers and
everyone is engaged in conservation of the bird colony,” said Mridul Burhagohain, a journalist and nature lover. Nested on a banyan tree near the Demou river that flows by the village, the hornbill colony has become a tourist attraction of sorts with large numbers of people, par-

The people came forward on their own and it became a successful project,” Burhagohain said while adding that the people of the village have planted banana and papaya trees in their backyards so that the birds are not short of food. without any fear in the village. They eat the fruits on the trees generously planted by the villagers. The village has also become an example for many others in adjoining areas,” he said, adding that many a time, the villagers had also treated injured birds and released them later.
“The hornbills are injured by strong winds and during heavy monsoons. There are several instances when we have seen the villagers rescuing the injured hornbills and releasing them after giving them first aid,” said Surjya Kumar Chetia, a youth of the village who teaches in Jorhat.

Indian-origin lawyer with Nazi symbol shoots 9 in US, killed Nathan Desai was armed with a handgun and submachine gun during the 20-minute shooting spree when he fired at passing cars and the police IANS, NEW YORK
A
n Indian-origin lawyer in military style clothing emblazoned with a swastika pointing to his Nazi sympathies went on an early morning shooting rampage injuring nine persons in Houston city of the US this week, before he was killed by police, authorities said. Nathan Desai was armed with a handgun and submachine gun during the 20-minute shooting spree when he fired at passing cars and the police, according to ABC13’s Eyewitness News. Citing sources, the Eyewitness News said Desai used his car to stockpile ammunition and a tree for cover when he was shooting, right outside his condominium complex on Law Street. The police said they did not know why Desai went on the rampage hitting people at random. Desai’s name was written with the ‘S’ capitalized in media reports in Houston, making it sound European, but his father was identified as Prakash Desai. All of his victims survived but one person was critically wounded and five others were hospitalized, Houston Police acting chief

Martha Montalvo said. Montalvo described the shooter as a lawyer who was having problems at his law firm. When the police responded to the shooting, he shot at them and was killed when cops returned fire, she said. The shooter’s father, 80-year-old Prakash Desai told Eyewitness News that his son was “upset about the law practice not going well”.
Russia-India keen on sealing visa-free group travel deal soon MOSCOW: India and Russia are working towards a regime for visafree entry for groups, and the Russian side has said it is expecting “some development” soon in the negotiations. Talking to IANS here, Sergyey Korneev, Deputy Head of Russia’s Ministry of Culture and Federal Agency For Tourism, said that they are keen on getting the agreement concluded soon to attract more Indian tourists to Russia. “The discussions are at a serious level and as a tourism body we are in favor of the liberalization. We are doing it at a priority level,” Korneev told IANS after holding discussions with a group of travel agents from India whose visit was organized by Russian Information Centre. “We regret that we have already missed some movement, we want to change the situation about Indian arrivals,” he said. At present Russia
He didn’t believe his son was the shooter as the two were said to have had dinner only 12 hours before the shooting. John Elmore, the property manager for The Oaks at West University, where Desai lived, said Desai’s behavior had been erratic for the last two months. He seemed paranoid and thought someone was “out to get him”, Elmore said.

has such an agreement with China under which tourists in groups of five to 50 persons, accompanies a tour operator registered in both countries, to visit the country without a visa for up to 15 days. Around 20 million Indians travelled abroad in 2015. As number of Indian tourists visiting Russia has increased, the Russian government is hoping a bigger share of the pie. The discussions for visa-free travel to Russia have been on for a long time, and Korneev said details of the negotiations are with the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
Desai, 46, had no active civil or criminal cases, according to Harris county court records, accessed by the Eyewitness. He had only two new criminal cases since 2013. In February, he and his law partner Kenneth McDaniel of 12 years parted ways and neighbors believed he was doing law work out of his condo. “We made a mutual decision,
roughly in February, to simply no longer operate as a partnership for economic reasons,” said McDaniel. “I feel very sorry for him and for those people.” Desai owned several guns to protect himself against his clients, some of whom were “funny people and criminally-minded people”, his father said. Houston Chronicle said that Prakash Desai is a retired geologist. The daily reported that the police found in his flat several military items that went back to the Civil War. Police found a Thompson submachine gun in his Porsche and a 0.45 caliber handgun that he used against the police. The Chronicle said that the police used a robot to examine his car and his flat for explosives. This is the second mass shooting in 13 years by a person of Indian descent in the US. In 2003, at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Biswanath Halder went on a rampage, taking hostages, killing a graduate student and wounding another and a professor. A graduate of the university’s business school, he unsuccessfully sued a university administrator.
team of Indian-American engineers has devised a way to send secure passwords through the human body using smartphone fingerprint sensors and laptop touchpads — rather than over the air where they’re vulnerable to hacking. Sending a password over airborne radio waves like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth means anyone can eavesdrop, making those transmissions vulnerable to hackers who can attempt to break the encrypted code. Now, computer scientists and electrical engineers from Seattlebased University of Washington have devised a way to send secure passwords through the human body — using benign, low-frequency transmissions generated by fingerprint sensors and touchpads on consumer devices.
Shyam Gollakota, assistant professor of computer science and engineering
“Fingerprint sensors have so far been used as an input device. What is cool is that we’ve shown for the first time that fingerprint sensors can be re-purposed to send out information that is confined to the body,” said senior author Shyam Gollakota, assistant professor of computer science and engineering.
These “on-body” transmissions offer a more secure way to transmit authenticating information between devices that touch parts of your body — such as a smart door lock or wearable medical device — and a phone or device that confirms your identity by asking you to type in a password.

India wins 500th Test
Chasing a daunting 434, the Kiwis were 93 for four at stumps on day four and on Monday lost the remaining six wickets for just 143 runs IANS, KANPUR
I
ndia bowled out New Zealand for 236 in their second innings to win the first cricket Test by 197 runs on the fifth day at the Green Park here on September 26. Chasing a daunting 434, the Kiwis were 93 for four at stumps on day four and on Day 5 lost the remaining six wickets for just 143 runs. Luke Ronchi (80) and Mitchell Santner (71) put up resistance in the first hour of the day but their patience didn’t last long. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (6/132) claimed his 19th fivewicket haul and nailed the final three wickets of the day, while medium pacer Mohammad Shami scalped two wickets on the final day of India’s 500th Test. Earlier in the day, New Zealand started the day brightly with Santner and Ronchi dominating the Indian bowlers with aggressive batting in the first hour. They stitched a 102run partnership for the fifth wicket as they relied on positivity to fend off the Indian bowlers. Wicketkeeper-batsman Ronchi registered his second fifty in Test cricket as he completed a stroke-filled knock. However, with his score at 80 and his team’s total at 158/4, he lost his wicket, top-edging a Ravindra Jadeja delivery to Ravichandran Ashwin at point. The right-handed batsman hit nine fours and a six.

Later, seamer Mohammad Shami removed B.J. Watling (18) and Mark Craig (1) to demolish the Kiwi lower middle-order. While right-hander Watling struggled to fend off a pacy in-cutter that hit his pads, Craig misread a line as the ball dismantled his stumps as the New Zealanders went to the lunch with 205/7 on scoreboard.
After lunch, it was just a matter of time before India took the remaining three wickets — and they did it easily. Once again, Ashwin delivered the blows to the visitors. Santner found a delivery from Ashwin — that turned sharply and bounced more than expected — unplayable and the ball hit the top of the bat before ending in the
hands of Rohit Sharma at silly point. Next to go was right-hander Ish Sodhi (17) who moved across and exposed the stumps to a delivery from Ashwin. Ashwin then struck Neil Wagner (0) on the pads and got a leg before wicket (LBW) dismissal to seal not only his 10th wicket of the match but also India’s big win.
Lodha panel moves SC over BCCI’s non-compliance NEW DELHI: The Justice Lodha Committee has sought the removal of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) office-bearers, telling the Supreme Court that the country’s apex cricketing body was not complying with its recommendations on organizational reforms. As the Lodha Committee’s counsel Gopal Shankarnarayan handed over the panel’s report to the apex court, the bench headed by Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur observed, “If the BCCI thinks that they can defy the court’s order and take the law into their own hands, they are mistaken.” Having observed this, the bench said it will hold a hearing on October 6 regarding the Lodha panel’s report and the suggestion that the BCCI office-bearers should be removed en bloc. The report by the Lodha panel had accused the BCCI of stalling reforms at every stage and violating the directions issued by the apex court. Complaining that the BCCI had ignored orders of the court and its recommendations on several issues, the Lodha panel sought action against the board’s top brass, including BCCI President Anurag Thakur, for violating the apex court’s orders. “The BCCI thinks it is law unto itself. We know how to get our orders implemented. BCCI thinks it is the lord. You better fall in line or we will make you fall in line. The conduct of the BCCI is in poor taste,” the Chief Justice asserted.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL-- Hemant Brahmbhatt, publisher of popular weekly Hi India, and Ketan Patel from Shakti group presented ‘King of Garba’ Legendary Atul Purhohit on September 24 at spacious Odeum Sports and Expo Center, 1033 N. Villa Ave, Villa Park, IL. The event was a complete sell-out what with thousands of eager-beaver participants enjoying dancing Raas Garba. The whirling dancers, clapping hands, distinct sound of wooden sticks struck together, toe-tapping music and people wearing vibrant colorful clothes marked the Navratri celebration at the Garba & Dandiya Raas dances held all over Chicagoland. This is part of the worship of Durga Mata who symbolizes the victory of good over evil; the Navratri celebration marks a festival of nine nights during which Hindus worship goddesses Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati, the goddesses of health, prosperity and knowledge, respectively. While Navratri and Dussehra (the 10th day) are celebrated by Hindus with regional variations, the most famous one is from the state of Gujarat. The name needs no introduction. The living legend, Atul Purohit, from Baroda is a world-renowned master of folk music and Garba singer who redefined the lines of classical music. He has evolved from a kid who identified his own talent in music and moved to Baroda to a storm that has swept the fans of his music off their feet. His classical style mixed with Hindustani, Bhajan and Sufi acted in his favor as he continued to win many more laurels to his name. His album ‘Tara Vina Sham’ became a very big hit and propelled him to the rank of the most famous Garba singer of all time. His events in the US or any other place in the world, attract a large crowd. It is not uncommon to see a record 100,000 people attend his Navratri Garba event at Baroda. Purohit is well regarded in the realm of “Sunderkand” and devotional songs. The ‘King of Garba’, as he is known, has been recognized by the Limca Book of World Records. Purohit’s music was graceful, and his intonation was smooth and did not need any exaggeration of loud instrumental beats. Many participants sang along the famous lyrics. The reason people love him could be perhaps “because I sing from my heart and soul. The songs that I select are very old and original folk songs. I do give little variation in notes, but keep the soul, the ‘atma’, of the song,” adding, “The accompanying instrumentals are soft and just enough to keep a melodious pulse, so the fundamental harmony is still there.” says Atul Purhohit. The singer was accompanied by Nrupesh Vora (Tabla), Rajendra Solanki (Dholak), Magan Raja (Dhol), and Jayesh Patel (Side on

rhythm). Iqbal Mir was the composer, music arranger and on the keyboard. Dr. Bhairavi Buch and Ms. Patel were the female singers. The event started with prayers and bhajans dedicated to the Goddesses. Garbas started with dancers revolving around ‘Mataji’s Garbi’, the idol of goddess Durga, seated in the center of Odeum Sports and Expo Center with flowers, around which the traditional “Aarti” was performed. Most of the participants were present downstairs dancing, while others were on the bleachers watching the grandeur from above. While many took to the floor dancing until the wee hours of the morning, some sat on the bleachers either taking a break or just watching the energetic and graceful dancers.
Near the entrance were stalls set up to sell jewelry (Pragati International and Mahavir Jewelers), Clothes and decorative items. This massive celebration was successful because, “Preparations started months prior to the event as decisions regarding the invitation of world-renowned singer Atul Purohit and his party, with his orchestra, venue and sponsors had to be made well in advance for such a hugely successful event .” The sponsors for the event were Vinakom, Deep Foods, Famous Liquors, R N International, Worlds Money Exchange Anil Shah, Strike Ten, Creative Lensing, Narayan Jewelers, Lake Street Dental, Sahil, LA TAN, Exotic Motors, AUCI, Sai Saffron, Mafatbhai Patel (Patel Brothers), Trivedi &

His sentiment is in tune with Karan Johar’s concern that banning Pakistani artistes from working in India was not a solution to terrorism. into the Indian TV industry through Zindagi channel, which brought syndicated content from Pakistan to the country. “Zindagi Gulzar Hai” and “Humsafar” are shows that helped him garner a huge fan following, which then escalated when he made his Bollywood debut with “Khoobsurat”.

MUMBAI: He is known for making films based on the harsh realities of life and now filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar is set to make one against the backdrop of the 1975 emergency. Bhandarkar also quashed all rumors claiming that he is making films called “Bollywood Wives” or “Air Hostess”. “Just to clarify, right now I am not making any film called ‘Bollywood Wives’ or ‘Air Hostess’. My next is on d backdrop of Emergency in 1975,” Bhandarkar tweeted on Tuesday. Then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared an emergency for 21 months, during which the democratic rights of citizens were curbed. Bhandarkar has previously helmed hard-hitting films like “Heroine”, “Calendar Girls”, “Fashion”, “Page 3” and “Corporate”. —IANS
MUMBAI: As melody queen Lata Mangeshkar turned 87 on Thursday, celebrities like Amitabh Bachhcan, Sachin Tendulkar and A.R. Rahman wished her good health and a long life. Starting her career in 1943 at the age of 13 with the song “Naachu ya gade, khelu saari, mani haus bhaari…”for Marathi film “Kiti Hasaal”, she ventured into Hindi cinema with the song “Paa laagu kar jori re” for Vasant Joglekar’s movie “Aap Ki Seva Mein”. Here’s what celebrities had to say on her birthday: Amitabh Bachchan: Lata ji...(Lataji...whose voice is as sweet as honey, lot of respect to her and wishing her a very happy birthday.) Sachin Tendulkar: Lata didi. Times may change but your melodious voice and evergreen songs remain timeless. A.R.Rahman: Love and respect always. Happy Birthday to you... Lata Mangeshkar. Madhur Bhandarkar: Happy birthday to Lata Mangeshkar didi. Not a single day passes by without listening to your divine voice. May God bless you abundantly. Juhi Chawla: Masters of their craft... Lata Mangeshkarji, Yashji,
ctress-producer Richa Chadha, who recently attended the Nara International Film Festival in Japan, is looking forward to working on a fashion film project with a Japanese producer. Without revealing the name of the producer, Richa said in a statement: “I’m happy to be working on a fashion film project with a Japan-
Shah Rukh Khan. Feel so blessed... I could be in such privileged company. Dia Mirza: Happy birthday to the nightingale of India. Thank you for the songs and joy you have given us Lata Mangeshkar. Riteish Deshmukh: Wishing the Nightingale of India Lata MangeshkarJi a very happy birthday. A voice that still resonates in every household and unites India. Shreya Ghoshal: Happy birthday Lata Mangeshkarji. Your voice is one of the biggest inspirations for me. Respects and heartfelt wishes for your good health. —IANS
Amitabh, Ranveer bag GQ awards MUMBAI: Oozing with style and glamour, celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Ranveer Singh and Saif Ali Khan walked home with trophies at the GQ Men of the Year Awards 2016. GQ India celebrated its eighth anniversary with the annual Men of the Year Awards in association with Chivas at the Grand Hyatt, Mumbai on Tuesday. —IANS
‘Banjo’: It’s bit tedious but a brave one Film: ‘Banjo’; Director: Ravi Jadhav; Starring: Riteish Deshmukh, Nargis Fakhri; Rating: ***
I
n what could be seen as a breakthrough performance for the underrated Riteish Deshmukh with reservations, “Banjo” provides him a chance to play a street musician in the bustling egalitarian bylanes of Mumbai where water scarcity is seriously countermanded by an abundance of dreams. In fact one of the dreamers
dreams of owning his personal water tank. Deshmukh plays Taraat, who we are told, has been raised by a nowold and senile musician (Janardhan
Parab). Early in the film when in typical “Raja Hindustani” style Taraat is supremely smitten by the Gori Memsahib from the US (Fakhri), he goes through a lengthy
drunken monologue where he pretends to hold a conversation with his inert foster-father who can’t hear a thing. Deshmukh exercises admirable control over the dialogues and the shifting emotions in the sequence, never overstating the self-pity for applause. It requires herculean proportions of daring to attempt such a lengthy sequence during these times when audiences fidget faster than flies. As you sit patiently through Marathi director Ravi Jadhav’s first Hindi film, you will come across many such moments that defy conventions of commercial cinema -- Subhash K. Jha

Yoga has helped me a lot: Jacqueline
Priyanka feels ‘blessed’
I
ndian actress Priyanka Chopra is having a great time working with Blair Underwood and Aunjanue Ellis in Season 2 of American TV series “Quantico”. She says she feels blessed to share screen space with them. Underwood, a Golden Globeaward winning actor, joined the series as a regular in the role of an inspirational and intelligent CIA agent named Owen Hall, who is also a teacher at the CIA. And Ellis plays role of Miranda Shaw, Assistant Director at the FBI Academy in “Quantico”. “The best thing about working with Blair Underwood is the fact that he knows all his lines, all the time. He has lines, he has like pages and pages of lines because he plays our teacher this year so he has so much to say but he is so professional,” Priyanka said in a statement. Priyanka, who was seen essaying an FBI agent named Alex Parrish in the first season of the American drama series, is now portraying a CIA agent in its second season, which airs in India on Star World and Star World HD. Priyanka opened up about her costars in a special video to Star World.

ctor Varun Dhawan says he would love to share screen space with Amitabh Bachchan but, contrary to reports, he will not be featuring in “Dabba Gul” with the megastar. Asked about the film, the “Dishoom” actor said: “It’s a rumour and nothing has been confirmed.” “Who wouldn’t want to work with Big B? But as of now, this is just a rumor,” added Varun at the Night Life Convention Award function here on Monday. Pradeep Sarkar-directed “Dabba Gul” is said to be based on the “Dabbawalas” of Mumbai and an MBA student, who wants to learn their way of business for his internship.

cent rise in the disease,” Naresh Trehan, Chairman and Managing Director at Gurgaon’s Medanta The Medicity, told IANS. According to experts, nearly seven per cent of patients aged 25-40 in the metros suffer from coronary heart diseases (CAD).
“CAD, in which the blockage of coronary arteries -- artery that supplies blood to heart -- takes place, is the most common type of heart disease affecting the youth of the country,” Ashwani Mehta, Senior Consultant (cardiology) at New Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, told IANS. CAD -- also known as hardening of the arteries -- is caused by the build-up of plaque. The arteries, usually smooth and elastic, get plaque on their inner walls, making them more rigid and narrowed. The condition then restricts the blood flow to the heart, starving it of oxygen. The plaque could then rupture, leading to a sudden cardiac death. Typical symptoms include chest pain oor shortness of breath -- when the coronary arteries narrow, the heart may not receive enough blood when demand is greatest.
TOKYO: Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are potentially more exposed to reproaches, say researchers in a study that aimed to find the effect of punishment in children with the disorder. Children with ADHD often get into trouble with their parents, teachers and friends, for their elevated activity levels, impulsive actions and difficulty in focusing. The findings showed that children with ADHD try to avoid punishment more often over time than other children without the disorder. On the other hand, for children without the disorder, punishment seemed to be less distractive as they keep their focus on winning.

NEW YORK: Oxytocin -- dubbed as the “love hormone” as it promotes social connections -- might also help relieve the annoying and disturbing noises of chronic ringing in the ears, called tinnitus, Brazilian researchers suggested. Tinnitus is characterized as the hearing of sounds -- perceived as ringing, buzzing, crickets or hissing -when there are none. The findings showed that people suffering from tinnitus may find some relief by spraying the hormone oxytocin in their nose. “Oxytocin has actions in the brain and the ear that may help in tinnitus

Regular physical activity is known to have various health benefits, including reduced risk of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, colon and breast cancer, as well as depression. The results showed that compared with sedentary behavior, low leisure-time physical activity was associated with a 10 per cent lower risk of any suspected bacterial infection, said Kathrine Pape Madsen from the Aalborg University, in Denmark.
Further, compared with individuals classified as sedentary, those undertaking low and moderate levels of leisure-time physical activity were associated with a 21 per cent and 32 per cent reduction of suspected cystitis -- urinary tract infec-
Alcohol may cut mental skills in elderly IANS, NEW YORK

xcess consumption of alcohol can cause neurophysiological and cognitive changes ranging from disrupted sleep to more serious neurotoxic effects, a study has found. The negative consequences of heavy alcohol consumption on neurocognitive function gets worse with advanced age, the study said. Results showed that heavy drinking in older adults could lead to poorer global cognitive function, learning, memory and motor function.
Although the acute consumption of excessive quantities of alcohol causes neurophysiological and cognitive alterations, as people reach advanced age, they are more prone to cognitive decline, more due to the heavy dependence of alcohol, the researchers observed. “While heavy current alcohol consumption is associated with significant impairment in a number of neurocognitive domains, history of alcohol dependence, even in the absence of heavy current alcohol use, is associated with lasting negative consequences for neurocognitive function,” said Adam J.

NEW YORK: “Love hormone” oxytocin not only brings spark in your relationship but can also make men more spiritual, adopt meditation and connect to the higher self. According to researchers from Duke University, oxytocin which is known for its role in promoting social bonding, altruism and more may also support spirituality. In the study, men reported a greater sense of spirituality shortly after taking oxytocin and a week later. Participants who took oxytocin also experienced more positive emotions during meditation, said lead author Patty Van Cappellen, social psychologist at Duke. Spirituality and meditation have each been linked to health and wellbeing in previous research. “We were interested in understanding biological factors that may enhance those spiritual experiences. Oxytocin appears to be part
of the way our bodies support spiritual beliefs,” Cappellen explained. “Spirituality is complex and affected by many factors. However, oxytocin does seem to affect how we perceive the world and what we believe,” he added. Study participants were all male, and the findings apply only to men. In general, oxytocin operates somewhat differently in men and women and its effects on women’s spirituality still needs to be investigated. —IANS
Turn to tea tree oil Quick tips for an organized home for glowing skin K A IANS, NEW DELHI
IANS, NEW DELHI
dding tea tree oil in your daily regime will not only pave way for a healthier and glowing skin, but it can also help you alleviate issues like insect bites and hair problems, says an expert.
Shikhee Agrawal, H e a d Tr a i n i n g , The Body Shop, lists benefits of tea tree oil: Works as a skin saver: Tea tree oil works as an anti-imperfection solution to achieving a clearer and healthy looking skin. It helps in opening the pores, loosening up blocked oil and dirt that cause whiteheads, blackheads, painful red breakouts and blemishes. Mix two to three drops with a smidge of coconut oil and use a cotton swab to apply. Avoid using your fingertips as it introduces more dirt and revigorates break outs.
Helps in moisturizing dry skin: Tea tree oil, mixed with glycerine, is great for moisturizing dry and cracked skin. Mix one or two drops of tea tree oil with one tablespoon of almond oil or coconut oil. Massage gently into the affected areas, especially on your knees, elbows a n d heels for lasting relief from dry skin. Tea tree oil for hair growth and nourishment: Mixing a few drops of tea tree oil into your hair oil and massaging it into your scalp will unclog your hair follicles. This nourishes your roots and strengthens your locks, inducing hair growth. Don’t apply directly on your scalp as it can be harsh on the skin. Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with shampoo to get rid of dandruff. Tea tree oil also helps in healing burns.
eeping your home clean and organized always is not as difficult as it seems. Just follow a simple routine to eliminate scope for clutter, says an expert. Yukta Mathur, editor of online furniture shopping platform housefull.com, shares some tips to keep your home looking tidy every day. Say ‘no’ to only weekend cleaning: It’s a common habit to wait for Saturday or Sunday for household chores. But this habit only leads to a
messier week. It’s not easy to clean everything every day, but chalk out a routine where you finish off some work on each day of the week. Organize your washroom: If your
washroom is well-arranged, it looks better and you feel like keeping it that way regularly. Arrangement of bottles of shampoo and shower gel, toothpaste, and other toiletries after your bathing routine, is the perfect tip to keeping everything looking immaculate. Box the small clutter: There are usually a lot of small things lying around such as keys, remote, and sticky notepads. Allocate small containers or boxes for stocking all this stuff. This also holds true for toys and playstuff.
Apple helps get rid of bad breath IANS, NEW YORK
A
lthough garlic is good for health, many people tend to stay away from it due to the stingy bad breath it produces. Now a new study has revealed that consuming raw apple, mint or lettuce right after garlic may help reduce the pungent smell. Garlic breath is caused by the volatiles — including diallyl disulfide, allyl mercaptan, allyl methyl disulfide, and allyl methyl sulfide — present in garlic, said the researchers from the Ohio State University. In the study, the team gave partic-
ipants three grams of softneck garlic cloves to chew for 25 seconds, and then water (control); raw, juiced or heated apple; raw or heated lettuce; raw or juiced mint leaves; or green
tea were consumed immediately. The levels of volatiles on the breath after consumption were analysed by selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry.

SHARE SPACE
We have office space to share/sublease at an excellent location of Glendale Heights/Bloomingdale Township. This is the perfect set-up for doctors, podiatrist, internist, Gynecologist or other practitioners wanting to share space in an existing, established office has multiple rooms, on site x-ray, physical therapy equipment and lab. I am looking to expand the clinic services and work with like-minded practitioners. If you are interested, or know of someone with Heading : Arial Black 12 Font Black color interest, please email us.
