The survey, tabled in parliament by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday, also said during the current fiscal, while the farm sector will show a decent growth of 4.1 percent, industrial output will retard to 5.2 percent. Services growth will be 8.8 percent. These three sectors had expanded by 1.2 percent, 7.4 percent and 8.9 percent, respectively, during the previous fiscal. “For 2017-18, it is expected that the growth would return to normal as the new currency notes in required quantities come back into circulation and as follow-up actions to demonetization are taken,” the survey said referring to ban on high-denomination currencies

At a rally of his supporters after he filed his nomination from Jaswantnagar in Etawah as a SP candidate, an emotional Shivpal Yadav reiterated his allegiance to his elder brother Mulayam Singh Yadav but said he will part ways with the SP after the results are announced. “Jao tum jeet jao, sarkar banao, hum ab party banayenge,” he said as thousands of his supporters applauded. He also said that whatever he was today was because of Mulayam Singh. “People say and I admit that whatever I have achieved in my political career is because of the blessings of Netaji” he said in a choked voice. Opposition slams budget While Prime Minister Narendra Modi, hailed the budget as ‘historic,’ other political parties criticized it by calling it ‘directionless’ and ‘damp squib’ IANS, NEW DELHI

O

pposition parties on slammed the Union Budget as a “damp squib”, “pro-corporate” and “hopeless” while the ruling party leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, hailed it as “historic” and reflective of the government’s aim to boost investment and employment. The Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, Janata Dal-United and Communist Party of India-Marxist were among the parties which criticized the budget presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the Lok Sabha. In his reaction to the budget, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that maximum emphasis has been given to farmers, villages, poor, dalit and the underprivileged sections of the society. “This budget is associated with our aspirations, our dreams and in a way depicts our future. This is the future of our new generation, the future of our farmers. When I say future, it has a meaning in each of its letters,” Modi said. Expanding on the word “Future”, he said `F’ stands for the farmer, `U’ for Underprivileged,

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the budget reflected the government's aim to boost investment and employment.

`T’ for Transparency and Technology Upgradation, `U’ for Urban Rejuvenation, `R’ for Rural Development and `E’ for Employment, Entrepreneurship and Enhancement. He said the budget will give new strength to the economy and reflects commitment to eliminate corruption and black money. Modi said Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and his team deserve

praise for the “historic budget.” Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi told reporters outside Parliament that the budget did not address key issues like job creation and agrarian distress. “We were expecting fireworks, instead got a damp squib. The budget lacked vision,” Gandhi said. “The shock that this government gave through demonetiza-

tion, the expectation was the government will do something for the poor, farmers the unemployed. But there is no clear vision. He (Jaitley) did a lot of sher-o-shayari, gave a good speech but there is no basis,” Gandhi added. West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee said the budget lacked any direction. “The budget is clueless, useless,

baseless, missionless, actionless and heartless. No roadmap for the country or the future from a government that has lost all its credibility,” she said in a tweet. “The budget is misleading, full of jugglery of numbers and hollow words which mean nothing,” she added. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said in Patna that the budget has disappointed the people. “There is nothing in it that could speed up growth and development in the country. It is not going to help the common people, farmers and the youth,” he said. Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad said the budget was antipoor, anti-farmer and anti-youth. “Why has the central government failed to inform how much employment it provided to youth last year,” he asked. CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechury said the budget will burden the common man. “We are calling it a contractionary budget, as opposed to an expansionary budget as it is not expanding domestic demand. There is decline in revenue expenditure, no employment generation and it is seeking to hike indirect taxes, which will burden the common man,” he said.

Will budget fulfill expectations post note ban? AMIT KAPOOR & CHIRAG YADAV, NEW DELHI

T

he Union Budget for 2017-18 was easily the most anticipated one in recent times. The public was seeking the government's policy stance after its bold attack on black money with demonetization. On a related note, the market was also looking forward to the government's response to the demonetization-induced slowdown. The Economic Survey had also raised expectations of a radical move like Universal Basic Income (UBI). With a wide range of expectations tied to the Budget on a year when growth expectations were low, it was bound to have a few hits and misses. Coming to the positive aspects, the Budget was high on decibels with its take on black money. It took the fight against black money and corruption to its very root by targeting the funding of political

parties. The maximum amount of funding that parties can receive in cash has been reduced to Rs 2000. Besides political funding, the Budget targets big-time offenders that flee the country by proposing a new law to confiscate their assets till they submit to the jurisdiction of the appropriate legal forum.

despite temptations to splurge in order to revive a slowing economy. The Budget promises to maintain a fiscal deficit of 3.2 percent of GDP in FY2018 and achieve the FRBM-recommended target of 3 percent in the following year. This should send a positive signal to the credit rating agencies

Other positives in the Budget were seen in the gradual nudge towards digitalization with duty exemptions on cashless transaction in PoS terminals and online rail booking. Finally, cash transactions, in general, have been limited to Rs 3 lakhs. Secondly, a similar continuity in the governmenta’s stand was seen in the area of fiscal consolidation. The government has displayed an unwavering commitment to maintaining a stable fiscal regime since its first Budget for 2014-15,

and attract funds from abroad, which is urgently required in an investment-starved Indian economy. Third, as per market expectations, the government gave a push to capital expenditure that was needed to stimulate the slowing economy. According to our estimates, the government's capital expenditure saw an increase of 2.3

percent since the last Budget. Infrastructure witnessed a push with higher allocations to roads and highways than last year amounting to Rs 97,000 crore. Further capital expenditure was seen in the area of renewable energy with an allocation of Rs 3,000 for nuclear power alone. This fiscal stimulus should partly compensate for the lack of private investments in the economy.

H

oping for a 17-per cent growth in taxes revenues, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley presented the Union Budget 2017-18, offering more money for welfare schemes, minor tax sops for individuals and small firms, with a fiscal deficit of 3.2 per cent of GDP. In his fourth budget as Finance Minister presented in the Lok Sabha, Jaitley also made some farreaching changes in political funding, placing a cap of Rs 2,000 on the donation which any party can receive from one source in cash. The budget, which pegs the total expenditure for 2017-18 at Rs 21.47 lakh crore — with a 25.4 percent jump in capital-side outlay — continued with the government’s focus on curbing black money by limiting cash transactions to less than Rs 300,000. In his 110-minute budget presentation, Jaitley also assured a law to confiscate the assets of fugitive economic offenders. On demonetization, he said, it will have substantial long-term

Announcing the dismissal, the White House accused her of betrayal “by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of

the US.” Yates said that she was not convinced of the legality of Trump’s order temporarily refusing entry for people from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. Refusing to defend the challenges to the orders in court, she said: “I am responsible for ensuring that the positions we take in court remain consistent with this institution’s solemn obligation to always seek

justice and stand for what is right.” Trump appointed Dana Boente, the federal prosecutor for the Eastern District of Virginia, to take over Yates’ position. The first major legal challenge to Trump’s order was filed by Bob Ferguson, the Attorney General of Washington, in a federal court there. The constitutional guarantees of religious freedom and equal rights were violated by the orders, he asserted.

Trump fires 2 top officials amid furore over immigration order WASHINGTON: Amid protests over his order to temporarily ban people from seven Muslim-majority countries coming into the US, President Donald Trump has sacked two top officials, including acting Attorney General Sally Yates after she refused to defend the order against court challenges. Announcing the dismissal of the nation’s top law officer night, the White House said Yates had “betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States.” Trump appointed Dana Boente, the federal prosecutor for the Eastern District of Virginia, to take over Yates’ position. Before assuming office in January, Donald Trump said that one of his first tasks would be to issue an executive order for the Labour Department to investigate visa abuses that he asserted undercut the wages of American workers. Along with H1-B, Sean Spicer mentioned spousal and others as categories of visas that Trump may act on. H1-B visas are issued to qualified professionals. A related visa is the L1, which is given to employees of a company who are transferred to the US. Both of them are used extensively by Indian companies. In 2015, President Barack Obama’s administration permitted spouses of H1-B visa-holders to get permission to work. Spicer said that these visas were part of the “larger immigration reform effort”. “You’ve already seen a lot of action on immigration,” he added, referring to the temporary ban on visitors from nine countries from where this and previous administra-

tive until he was replaced by Trump’s Attorney General nominee, Senator Jeff Sessions. The move came just hours after Yates ordered the Justice Department not to defend Trump’s immigration order, declaring in a memo that she was not convinced the order is lawful. Yates wrote that, as the leader of the Justice Department, she must ensure that the department’s position is “legally defensible” and “consistent with this institution’s solemn obligation to always seek justice and stand for what is right.” “At present, I am not convinced that the defense of the Executive Order is consistent with these responsibilities nor am I convinced that it (order) is lawful,” Yates wrote.

tions have perceived terrorist threats. According to ComputerWorld magazine, nearly 86 per cent of H1B visas for computer-related jobs and 46.5 per cent for engineering positions were given to Indians. The US issues 85,000 H1-B visas every year, of which 20,000 are for master’s degree holders from US universities. Because of the large number of applicants — 236,000 in 2016 — the H1-B visas were issued through a lottery system. During his campaign and afterwards, Trump criticized the work visa system for the abuses in the way visas were obtained and the impact on American technology workers. He vowed in a speech in December 2016, to end the practice of laid off American workers being made to train foreigners brought over to replace them. He called these incidents “demeaning” and said, “We are not going to let it happen to our people any more.” Like Trump, some Democrats, also want to restrict H1-B visas.

Trump announces SC nominee on Facebook Live IANS, NEW YORK

T

he US President Donald Trump took to Facebook Live to name Neil Gorsuch to fill the Supreme Court spot that has been vacant for nearly a year since the sudden death of former Chief Justice Antonin Scalia. Gorsuch, a 49-year-old judge at the US Court of Appeals in Denver city of Colorado, is the youngest nominee in 25 years to the position. As expected, Trump’s choice will reinvigorate the court’s conservative bloc and make the Supreme Court lean right, though the trend may be tempered by the occasional liberal votes of Justice Anthony Kennedy. However, Supreme Court nominees can be filibustered in the Sen-

ate. Earlier this month, several Senate Democrats vowed to block any nominee picked by Trump other

than Merrick Garland, nominated by former President Barack Obama but blocked by Senate Republicans

last year. Trump said Gorsuch, who cites Scalia as an inspiration, “has outstanding legal skills, a brilliant mind, tremendous discipline and has earned bipartisan support”. According to CNBC, Trump promised to nominate a judge who took conservative stances on issues including gun rights and abortion. The President made the announcement in the East Room of the White House in a primetime address. When he accepted the nomination, Gorsuch cautioned against judicial overreach based on policies judges want to see. “It is the role of judges to apply, not alter, the work of the people’s representatives. A judge who likes every outcome he reaches is very likely a bad judge, stretching for

results he prefers rather than those the law demands,” Gorsuch said. Several key Democratic senators immediately voiced opposition to Gorsuch’s appointment to the top court. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Downstate New York, said the “Senate must insist upon 60 votes for any Supreme Court nominee”. “Given his record, I have very serious doubts about Gorsuch’s ability to meet this standard. Gorsuch has repeatedly sided with corporations over working people, demonstrated a hostility toward women’s rights, and most troubling, hewed to an ideological approach to jurisprudence that makes me sceptical that he can be a strong, independent Justice on the court,” Schumer said.

India to grow at 6.75-7.5 percent next fiscal: Economic Survey The survey advocates a basic income scheme as an alternative scheme for poverty reduction in place of various ongoing welfare programs IANS, NEW DELHI

I

ndia’s Economic Survey for 2016-17 has pegged the country’s growth at between 6.75 percent and 7.5 percent, while going by the 7.1 percent expansion for the current fiscal provisionally projected by the Central Statistics Office. “For 2017-18, it is expected that the growth would return to normal as the new currency notes in required quantities come back into circulation and as follow-up actions to demonetization are taken,” the survey said referring to ban on high-denomination currencies

announced in November last year. “On balance, there is a likelihood that Indian economy may recover back to 6.75 percent to 7.5 percent in 2017-18.” Elaborating on the rationale behind its GDP growth estimate for

the next fiscal, the Survey said demonetized cash will be replenished by end March 2017 and the economy would revert to the normal thereafter. The survey also advocated a Universal Basic Income (UBI) scheme

as an alternative scheme for poverty reduction in place of various ongoing social welfare programmes, even as the Niti Aayog has already said India does not have the necessary financial resources for the project. “Demonetization has had shortterm costs but holds the potential for longterm benefits,” said the survey, calling for follow-up actions to minimize the costs and maximize the benefits. Areas listed include fast, demanddriven remonetization, further tax reforms, including bringing land and real estate into GST, reducing tax rates and stamp duties, and acting to allay the anxieties on overzealous tax administration. “These actions would allow growth to return to trend in 2017-18, following a temporary decline in 201617,” said the survey. The survey also called for societal shifts in narratives to overcome three long-standing challenges: Inefficient redistribution, ambivalence about the private sector and property rights, and improving but still-challenged state capacity.

RUN-UP TO ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS

Shivpal Yadav to float new party after March 11 IANS, LUCKNOW

S

hivpal Yadav, former President of the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, on Tuesday threw caution to wind and vowed to form a new party after assembly election results come in on March 11. He also took a dig at his nephew and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister

Shivpal Yadav

Akhilesh Yadav, with whom he has been daggers drawn. He said “some people” gave him the SP ticket as a “meharbani” or else he would have had to contest as an independent candidate. He also asked his supporters who were denied ticket by the Samajwadi Party to contest as independents. Shivpal Yadav was appointed the state president by Mulayam Singh in October. But Akhilesh Yadav sacked him — his uncle — from the cabinet.

‘Kejriwal backing perpetrators of blast in Punjab’ SANGRUR (PUNJAB): Hitting out at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was “trying to back the perpetrators of the bomb blast in Punjab”. “There was bomb blast a couple of days back in which six people died. And Arvind Kejriwal is backing the perpetrators of the blast. He is allowing them to contest elections. This is very dangerous for Punjab. If these elements gain strength in Punjab, then it will hijack all the development issues,” said Gandhi during a public

rally, on the last day of campaigning for the February 4 elections. Two men and a child were killed in the explosion on Tuesday evening just as a rally of Congress candidate

Harminder Singh Jassi ended at Maur Mandi town, 200 km from Chandigarh. The death toll went up later as some injured died in hospital. Gandhi’s comments come as Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal earlier said in a statement that “the manner in which the bomb blasts were executed was a throwback to the days of terrorism”. Badal said that the blast was a direct result of the AAP’s nexus with radical elements. Earlier, Kejriwal had called for Badal’s arrest, alleging that he had a role in the blasts.

T

he Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday issued a show-cause notice to Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar following a complaint of violation of the Model Code of Conduct, filed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and a regional party in Goa. The complainants have alleged that Parrikar encouraged voters to accept money from rival candi-

dates during his election campaign here. S u m i t Mukherjee, Secretary to the Commission, has directed the cenManohar Parrikar tral minister to respond to the show-cause notice by 1 p.m on February 3, a day before the state goes to polls. “Whereas, the Commission is prima facie of the opinion that by

making the aforesaid statement, you have violated the above said provision of the Model Code of Conduct,” Mukherjee said in his notice. On Sunday, while addressing a corner meeting in the Chimbel slum, near Panaji, Parrikar had said: “...I understand if someone organizes a rally and you take Rs 500 for moving around with (the candidate), that is not a problem. But when you vote, choose the lotus (BJP’s poll symbol). This you must remember.”

Lambi to be Punjab’s mother of all electoral battles

Five-time Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal will face the toughest political challenge as Congress President Amarinder Singh will take him on from the Lambi assembly constituency JAIDEEP SARIN, LAMBI (PUNJAB)

I

t could not have gotten bigger than this. For the first time in Punjab’s political history, two stalwarts of two mainline political parties are headed for a face-off in the February 4 assembly elections. Five-time Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal is facing perhaps the toughest political challenge of his seven-decade-long career as Punjab Congress President and former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh takes him on from the Lambi assembly constituency in Muktsar district of southwest Punjab. Add to this the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the newest challenger to the Congress and the Akali Dal-BJP combine in Punjab, which has fielded Delhi lawmaker Jarnail Singh from this seat. Jarnail, a former journalist, came into limelight in 2009 when he threw a shoe at then Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram in Delhi, upset over the long delay in justice for victims of the 1984 antiSikh riots in the national capital and elsewhere following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. “All eyes are on what happens in Lambi. It is the most interesting

The high-profile contest has forced the CM to spend more time in Lambi to ensure his victory on the seat. (Photo: IANS)

contest ever for this seat and even in Punjab. No two bigger leaders have come face-to-face like this before. It is the mother of all battles,” Sarabjit Singh, a farmer from the constituency, told IANS. For Badal, 89, Lambi has been his traditional seat since 1997. In the 2012 assembly elections, he was re-elected by a margin of 24,739 votes against his Congress oppo-

nent, which was seen as a relatively small margin for an incumbent Chief Minister. Amarinder Singh, who turns 75 next month, has taken the risk of contesting from this seat even though he is also in the fray from his traditional home seat of PatialaUrban and looks confident about taking on Badal. “I will thrash him here. I have

come here (to contest) as I want to teach him a lesson for ruining Punjab,” said an aggressive Amarinder, who has been indulging in noholds-barred talk in recent days. AAP candidate Jarnail Singh is focusing more on personal contact and small gatherings during his campaign. “I am getting a very good response from the people. They are fed up with the Akali Dal leadership

because of their excesses, and the Congress. Our victory is definite,” a confident Jarnail said. The high-profile contest has forced Badal to spend more time in Lambi this time to ensure that his hold on the seat remains intact. “I will win very comfortably. They (Amarinder and Jarnail) can try their luck in the state but they will not achieve anything. This is not a personal but a political fight,” said Badal, who is more restrained in his comments about his political opponents. In the 2014 parliamentary polls, the Akali Dal, of which Badal is the patron, maintained a lead of 34,219 votes in Lambi. Badal’s daughter-in-law Harsimrat Kaur Badal, who is the Union Minister for Food Processing, had contested the Bathinda Lok Sabha seat, of which Lambi is a part. The Chief Minister’s estranged nephew, former Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal, lost the Lok Sabha election by less than 20,000 votes. The Lambi seat had seen 87.23 per cent polling in 2012. It had over 140,000 voters then. The number of voters this time is nearly 156,000.

Will political ‘imports’ in BJP end its ‘UP exile’? UP witnessed protests at places where ticket distribution, party workers say, has been “mortgaged to (outsiders)” IANS, MOHIT DUBEY

W

ill the Bharatiya Janata Party’s hopes of ending its 14-year political vanvaas (exile) in Uttar Pradesh in the upcoming election be shattered by a rebellion from within — and against those who are being dubbed as “outsiders”? While the jury is still out on the matter, the fact is that the cadre seem to be disoriented by the BJP central leadership’s largescale embrace of “turncoats” and political opportunists who have been encouraged to flock to the party ahead of the elections — largely because the party felt it did not have “decent, winning candidates”

for as many as 150 of the 403 seats in the assembly. A veteran party worker from the Lucknow Central assembly constituency summed up the despondency as he rued how, over “good, clean and home-bred” people in the party, the leadership had chosen Brajesh Pathak, former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP, as its candidate. One of the top contenders for this ticket was the party’s state Vice President and city Mayor Dinesh Sharma, who many tout as Chief Minister material if the BJP comes to power. The anger, which was earlier palpable only in some sections, now seems to be spreading like the plague and is

spilling onto the streets. There have been fiery protests in many places in Uttar Pradesh — Lucknow, Varanasi, Allahabad, Kanpur, for instance — where ticket distribution, party workers say, has been “mortgaged to baahris (outsiders)”. In Lucknow alone, the BJP has fielded three such “outsiders” — Rita Bahuguna Joshi (Congress) in Lucknow Cantt, Brajesh Pathak (BSP) in Lucknow Central and Avinash Trivedi (BSP) in Bakshi Ka Talaab. Sensing trouble for himself, former BSP stalwart R.K. Chowdhary has preferred to contest as an “independent” from Mohanlalganj despite the BJP declaring him its

official candidate for the seat, which it has never won. A senior party official from Gosainganj, Raj Kumar Verma, says BJP workers are openly defying the party diktat and have sent signed appeals in their hundreds to its leaders to reverse the decision. “There should be no place for such

leaders who seek our support before an election and abuse us the rest of the time,” he said candidly. Anger is also simmering in Bakshi Ka Talaab — a Yadav-dominated seat where the BJP preferred Trivedi over party heavyweights Shivdarshan Yadav, Ram Saran Yadav, Ram Niwas Yadav and Pradeep Yadav.

Travel ban ‘not best way to protect’ America: UN

Refugees fleeing conflict and persecution are entitled to protection, says the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres IANS, UNITED NATIONS

U

N Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said here on Wednesday that the US travel ban imposed on refugees and immigrants from seven Middle East and North African countries “is not the way to best protect the US or any other country,” voicing his hope that “this measure should be removed sooner rather than later”. The secretary-general made the remarks in response to a question as he was briefing reporters here on his travel to Ethiopia, where he attended an African Union summit, Xinhua reported. In the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa on Monday, Guterres commended African countries for opening their borders to refugees and people fleeing violence while other parts of the world, including the developed West, close boundaries and build walls. “In my opinion, this is not the way to best protect the US or any other country in relation to the serious concerns that existed about the possibility of terrorist infiltration,” he said. “I don’t think this is the effective way to do so.” “What was lacking was a capacity

British Parliament to debate Trump’s visit LONDON: Britain’s Parliament on Tuesday said it would debate whether to revoke US President Donald Trump’s invitation to a State visit after a petition calling for it to be canceled garnered almost 1.7 million signatures. The debate was scheduled to take place on February 20, after the petition, created by Briton Graham Guest, received almost seventeen times the number of signatures it needed to qualify as a topic for parliamentary consideration, Efe news reported. “Donald Trump should be allowed to enter the UK in his capacity as head of the US Government, but he should not be invited to make an offi-

to have a comprehensive approach to the problem,” he said of the US ban, adding that it is very important to review “the very dramatic situations the refugees are facing when they have no chance to reach protection.” “And I think this measure should be removed sooner, rather than later,” the UN chief said.

SHORT TAKES

Trump blasts Australian PM WASHINGTON: Donald Trump blasted Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull over a refugee agreement which led to the US President abruptly end an hour-long phone call only after 25 minutes into speaking. Senior US officials said on Wednesday that during the call on January 28, Trump also boasted about the magnitude of his electoral college win and informed Turnbull that he had spoken with four other

world leaders that day - including Russian President Vladimir Putin and that “this was the worst call by far”, The Washington Post reported. “This is the worst deal ever,” Trump fumed as Turnbull attempted to confirm that the US would honour its pledge to take in 1,250 refugees from an Australian detention centre off the country’s coast at Nauru and Manus Island in Papua New Guinea.

Kuwaiti visa ban on 5 countries KUWAIT CITY: Kuwait has suspended the issuance of visas for nationals of Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran. After US President Donald Trump’s executive order banning seven Muslim-majority countries last Friday, the Kuwaiti government has told wouldbe migrants from the five banned nations to not apply for visas, as it is worried about the possible migration of radical Islamic terrorists, Sputnik International reported. Under the executive order signed

by Trump, refugees from all over the world will be denied US entry for 120 days while all immigration from socalled “countries with terrorism concerns” will be suspended for 90 days. The countries included in the US ban are Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen. Kuwait was the only nation to prohibit the entry of Syrian nationals prior to Trump’s executive action. Kuwait City previously issued a suspension of visas for all Syrians in 2011.

cial State visit because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen,” said the petition statement, referring to Elizabeth II. The petition was launched in response to Trump’s controversial executive order to withhold US visas from the citizens of seven Muslimmajority nations.

On Tuesday, the secretary-general issued a statement via his spokesman, saying that refugees fleeing conflict and persecution are entitled to protection, and he expressed concern at decisions around the world that have undermined the integrity of the international refugee protection regime.

EU president calls Trump threat to Europe BRUSSELS: In an extraordinary attack on the new US President, European Union President Donald Tusk called Donald Trump an existential threat to Europe. In an open letter to leaders of the 27 member states, Tusk included the Trump administration as part of a group of “dangerous” challenges facing the bloc, citing Russia, China and radical Islam as other threats.

“The change in Washington puts the European Union in a difficult situation, with the new administration seeming to put into question the last 70 years of American foreign policy,” Tusk said. T

wo days after Pakistan placed UN sanctioned militant leader, Hafiz Saeed, under house arrest in Lahore, the Interior Ministry on Wednesday banned the Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD) chief from travelling out of the country. The ministry has forwarded a letter to all provincial governments and the Federal Investigation Agency, which included Saeed among 38 others placed on the Exit Control List. All of them were said to be affiliated with the Jamaat-ud-Dawah or Lashkar-e-Taiba, which he is said to have founded. On Monday, authorities had placed Saeed under house arrest along with four other individuals, namely Abdullah Ubaid, Zafar Iqbal, Abdur Rehman Abid and Qazi Kashif Niaz, in Lahore. On Wednesday, pro-JuD protests escalated demanding the release of Saeed. Hizb-ul Mujhadeen chief Syed Salahuddin also called upon Islamabad to

reverse its detention order, which he termed “painful and cowardly”. Salahuddin, chairman of United Jihad Council (UJC), said in a statement: “Hafiz Mohammad Saeed has not only been urging the international community to break its criminal silence on Kashmir, but he has also been exposing the atrocities of India’s imperialistic regime.” Demonstrators in Lahore also

held an effigy, on which portraits of US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and flags of the US and India were affixed. The effigy and a banner with portraits of the duo and flags of both countries were torched afterwards. Protesters also carried banners and placards, inscribed with slogans in favour of the Jamaat-udDawah chief.

eg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal’s maiden five-wicket haul turned things around for India as the hosts beat England by 75 runs in the third and final Twenty20 International to clinch the series 2-1 at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium here. Chasing a mammoth 203, England were on track till the 13th over, scoring 119/2 before Chahal’s magical spell (6/25) put the visitors on the backfoot as they surrendered meekly to lose their last eight wickets for just eight runs and end on 127. England started well with opener Jason Roy (32) and Joe Root (42) putting on 47 runs for the second wicket before Root combined with skipper Eoin Morgan (40) and added 64 runs for the third wicket to put them in a commanding position. But thereafter it was Chahal all the way, who triggered a collapse by sending back Morgan and Root off consecutive deliveries before pacer Jasprit Bumrah (3/14) added to their woes by striking in the very next over to dismiss wicketkeeperbatsman Jos Buttler (0). Federer overcomes Nadal to win Australian Open MELBOURNE: Roger Federer has won his fifth Australian Open title and 18th overall major crown, defeating Rafael Nadal 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at the Rod Laver Arena here. Federer extended his lead over Nadal in the all-time major wins list to four with his first Melbourne Park crown since 2010, and his first major singles title win since Wimbledon 2012, reports ausopen.com. The Swiss, who will rise to No.10 in the world with the victory, earned his first win over Nadal in four meetings at the Australian Open, and won just his third major final over the Spaniard in nine attempts. The win snapped a six-match losing streak to Nadal in Grand Slam

play. Before that night, Federer’s most recent major win over his great rival came in the Wimbledon final of 2007. Federer has become the first man in history to win five or more titles at three different Grand Slam events. Federer hit 73 winners, including 20 aces, and won 76 per cent of his first service points for victory in three hours and 37 minutes. Nadal committed 28 unforced errors — 29 fewer than Federer. The Swiss, who returned this year after a six-month injury lay-off, is now 12-23 in their head to head matches. Raina, especially was the more aggressive of the two, as he dispatched pacer Chris Jordan for two sixes in the last over of the mandatory field restrictions. merican tennis legend Serena Williams scripted history when she defeated her elder sister Venus in the Australian Open final to become the first woman to capture 23 Grand Slam singles titles in the Open era here. Serena prevailed 6-4, 6-4 over Venus to clinch her seventh Australian Open singles crown at Melbourne Park. With the victory, Serena moved back to being the World No.1, deposing Angelique Kerber. She now has won 23 of 29 Grand Slam singles finals. Coming into the final, Serena was tied with German icon Steffi Graf for most number (22) of Grand Slam singles titles in the Open era. Australian Margaret Court has the highest number of titles with 24 across the amateur and Open eras. The Open era began in 1968 when the Grand Slam tournaments agreed to allow professional players to compete with amateurs. Before that only amateurs were

allowed to compete in the Grand Slams. With this win, 35-year-old Serena took a 17-11 lead in career head-to-head meetings against the 36-year-old Venus. While Serena pocketed $3,700,000 for the win, her sister got richer by $1,850,000. Serena now has seven Australian Open titles, making it her jointmost successful Grand Slam along-

side Wimbledon. She has also won six US Open titles and four French Open trophies. Venus, in her first Grand Slam decider since Wimbledon 2009, now has lost eight of her past nine meetings with Serena. Venus and Serena exchanged breaks to start the match, with the No.2 seed Serena settling in sooner to take the opening set behind seven aces and 16 winners.

Indian-American lawmakers slam Trump’s immigration order They criticized US President’s executive order on immigration saying that the order does not reflect who we are as Americans at a conference here IANS, WASHINGTON

I

ndian-American lawmakers slammed US President Donald Trump’s executive order on immigration at an Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) Victory Fund conference here. “As the most senior IndianAmerican Member of Congress, I believe that Donald Trump’s executive order does not reflect who we are as Americans,” said Democratic US Representative Ami Bera at the press conference. The lawmakers also criticized the Republican Hindu Coalition (RHC) for supporting Trump’s immigration order and said that RHC does not at all represent the views of the American Hindu and Muslim community. “...Prior to 1965, it was very difficult for people of Indian origin to

immigrate to the US, and this order takes us backwards towards that dark time,” said Bera. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi said that such a move by the Trump administration will divide America. “...This executive

order from President Trump is an assault on our Constitution. It hurts working families, and it only serves to divide Americans, not unify them.” Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal also criticized the order saying, “It is unthinkable

that this country, which welcomed me when I arrived at 16 years old, would so boldly, defiantly and barbarically turn its back on immigrants and refugees.” “Let us be clear that President Trump came into office by demonizing and ‘otherising’ immigrants and refugees. While we had hoped that perhaps he would move from being a divisive candidate to being a unifying President, he is failing us. I call on our communities to condemn and resist these executive orders,” she said. Congressman Ro Khanna said that Americans cannot allow policies that are unconstitutional. “We cannot allow policies to exist that are not consistent with our founding ideals and values. I swore in on the Constitution, and will always stand up for constitutional principles,” he said.

Indian-origin ‘told to prove Four Indian-origin honored by Australia lactation’ at Frankfurt airport IANS, CANBERRA

BERLIN: An Indian-origin Singaporean woman has said she was “humiliated” by the German police who told her to squeeze her breast to express milk at Frankfurt airport to prove she was lactating, the media reported. Gayathiri Bose, 33, who has a three-year-old child and a sevenmonth-old baby, told the BBC that she was exploring the possibility of taking formal legal action. Bose has already filed a complaint about the incident. Bose said the incident, which lasted for nearly 45 minutes, was “humiliating” and “very traumatizing”. She said the police at Frankfurt Airport got suspicious because she was carrying a breast pump but travelling without her baby. The German police, according to the BBC report on Tuesday,

declined to comment on the specific allegations. But said such measures were “clearly” not part of routine procedure. Bose, who was travelling alone, said she was on her way to board a flight to Paris last week when she was stopped at the security screening station. She said that after her carry-on bag, which contained her breast pump, went through the X-ray machine, she was taken aside for questioning.

Indian IT industry uneasy The High-Skilled Integrity and Fairness Act of 2017 called for doubling the minimum salary of H-1B visa holders to $130,000 from current minimum wage of $60,000 — move that will impact Indian techies IANS, NEW DELHI/WASHINGTON/BENGALURU

I

ndia has said it has expressed its concern to the US over a bill to change rules on H-1B visas that will impact the IT industry and Indian techies working in America. “India’s interests and concerns have been conveyed both to the US administration and the US Congress at senior levels,” said External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup in New Delhi. The High-Skilled Integrity and Fairness Act of 2017, introduced in the House of Representatives by California Congressman Zoe Lofgren, calls for doubling the minimum salary of H-1B visa holders to $130,000 from the current minimum wage of $60,000 — a move that could impact Indian techies. The bill, likely to be signed by President Donald Trump, would make it difficult for firms to use the programme to replace American employees with foreign workers, including from India, with lower wages. The bill would require that employers first offer a vacant position to an equally or better qualified American worker before seeking an H1B or L-1 visa holder. It would also establish wage requirements for L-1 workers and improve H1B wage requirements

to encourage companies to hire qualified American workers and prevent them from using foreign workers as a source of cheap labor. H1-B visas are issued to qualified professionals. A related visa is the L-1, which is given to employees of a company who are transferred to the US. Both of them are used extensively by Indian companies. According to ComputerWorld magazine, nearly 86 per cent of H1B visas for computer-related jobs and 46.5 per cent for engineering positions were given to Indians.

The US issues 85,000 H1-B visas every year, of which 20,000 are for master’s degree holders from US universities. Because of the large number of applicants - 236,000 in 2016 — the H1-B visas were issued through a lottery system. As the export-oriented industry’s representative body, Nasscom, said the reform bill was fraught with challenges due to provisions that would nullify its objective of saving American jobs. “The Lofgren Bill contains provisions that may prove challenging for

the Indian IT sector and leave loopholes that will nullify the objective of saving American jobs,” asserted Nasscom in a statement here. The US market generated about 60 per cent of the $108-billion export revenue for the $143-billion Indian IT industry for the last fiscal (2015-16). Nasscom’s revised export guidance is $117-119 billion for this fiscal (2016-17). “Though the bill has to go through an extensive legislative process at the US Congress and the

Senate for becoming law, it does not treat all IT service firms with H-1B visa holders equally and the provisions are biased against H-1B dependant firms,” asserted Nasscom President R. Chandrashekhar in a statement here. Assuring the industry of engaging with the US administration and its lawmakers through the Indian government, the former IT secretary said the apex body would highlight their value contribution as a ‘net creator’ of jobs in the US. “The Indian IT sector has helped American businesses by providing high-skilled IT solutions in order to innovate, open new markets, expand their operations and creating thousands of new jobs for Americans,” claimed Chandrashekhar. The bill also does not address the acute shortage of STEMskilled workers in the US, which led all companies to have a calibrated hiring of locals and bridging the skills gap with skilled workers on non-immigrant visas, including H-1Bs. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Echoing the Indian government’s and the industry’s concerns over the reform visa bill, Tech Mahindra Chief Executive C.P. Gurnani, however, hoped things would become better once Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets Trump in June.

The court allowed the Union government’s plea to withdraw January 7, 2016 notification that permitted the Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu and bullock cart race in some States. The operation of said notification was stayed by the top court on January 12, 2016. Defending the Tamil Nadu law permitting Jallikattu, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said that Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

Act, 1960, as it stands also permits slaughtering. The Act also allows the slaughtering off animals for religions functions and mentioned “Halal”. Advocating a holistic approach in dealing with the issue, he said that law allows the killing of animals for consumption but at the same time prohibits cruelty. The court said when law allows the killing of animals for consumption, then it comes under the “doctrine of necessity”.

Many women-centric subjects unexplored, says Bramma

Vijay to romance three heroines

Although the story of the film ‘Magalir Mattum’ is about a few women, the director clarifies it’s an equally important story about men too IANS, CHENNAI

N

ational award-winning filmmaker Bramma believes that there are plenty of yet-to-be explored women-centric subjects that deserve to be told and one such story is his upcoming Tamil drama Magalir Mattum starring actress Jyothika. “There are a lot of things about women that need to be spoken about. Women-centric subjects, in general, still remain unexplored and my film is an attempt to fill the vacuum. While it’s not an out-and-out women’s film but it does feature them in very strong characters,” Bramma told IANS. The film, which is produced by actor Suriya, also features Bhanupriya, Saranya Ponvannan and Urvashi in supporting roles.

In the film, Jyothika plays a post-modernistic character called Prabha.

Although the film’s story is about a few women, the director clarifies it’s an equally important story about men too. “My film also stars actors such as

that a large portion of the film has already been completed. Talking about working with Jyothika, Bramma said that she plays a post-modernistic character in the film called Prabha “She’s very sincere and disciplined. Despite her popularity, she doesn’t take things and people for granted. She is always the first person to reach the sets and there have been occasions where we have made her wait for a shot,” he said. The film’s second poster features Jyothika riding a Royal Enfield bike which has caught almost everybody’s attention. When asked if he considers her to be his hero in the film, Bramma said, “I don’t like this taboo that women can’t do certain things. Thus, by making Jyothika ride a bike in the film, we have broken that myth.”

CHENNAI: Tamil superstar Vijay will romance Jyothika, Kajal Aggarwal and Samantha Ruth Prabhu in his next yet-untitled Tamil movie. In an official statement, the makers confirmed that Jyothika, Kajal and Samantha are the heroines of the film. Interestingly, Jyothika and Vijay are teaming up after a decade. Their last on-screen appearance together was in 2003 Tamil actioner Thirumalai. To be helmed by Atlee, the project marks the director’s reunion with Vijay after last year’s blockbuster Theri. The film will be shot in Chennai, Punjab, US and across some exotic locations in Europe, the statement read further. — IANS

seaboard during the 1971 war. The film is partially based on the book Blue Fish, which is penned by Sankalp himself. While Rana will be seen as a naval officer in the film, Taapsee will be playing a refugee. The film also stars Nassar, Kay Kay Menon, Atul Kulkarni and late Om Puri in one of his last appearances. he attack on ace filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali on the sets of his upcoming film Padmavati in Jaipur by activists of a Rajput organization has left many fraternity members “appalled”. They have demanded for a strong action by the government. Last week, the Karni Sena activists entered the Jaigarh Fort and assaulted Bhansali, according to the police. They even misbehaved with the crew and criticized the National Award-winning director for “distorting” history in the film about the medieval-era Delhi ruler Alauddin Khilji, who fell in love with Rajput queen Padmavati. “He (Bhansali) has packed up and has said he will never shoot again in Jaipur,” a source said, while adding that now he has

‘Ban on Pakistani artists unfair’ DEBAYAN MUKHERJEE, NEW DELHI

K

nown to call a spade a spade, veteran actor Rishi Kapoor has pulled up authorities for confusing filmmakers on the issue of casting Pakistani actors post the terror attack on the Uri cantonment in Jammu and Kashmir last September. In a candid interview to IANS on the sidelines of the just-concluded Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet, Bollywood’s “Chintoo Uncle” said it was unfair to suddenly ban artists from Pakistan and there should be a cut-off date on

such diktats for film productions to fall in line. The Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association

(IMPPA) had banned Pakistani actors, singers and technicians from working on Indian films in the wake of Uri attacks and the volatile situation in Kashmir. “Films are not planned in one or three days. It takes time. You can’t say that you’re going to ban a picture,” fumed Kapoor, who acted with Pakistan star Fawad Khan in his last hit Kapoor & Sons. “You’ve been working for the last six months. These are unfair rulings and bullying tactics. You must give a cut-off period,” he said. “It gives us time to finish our films and henceforth we will not take them,” he added.

said. The film’s lead actor Ranveer Singh condemned the attack by tweeting that they are in a “state of shock” and are “disheartened”. “Sanjay sir is one of the most accomplished and authentic filmmakers we have in India, and he won’t ever do anything to hurt anyone’s feelings,” Ranveer tweeted. Siddharth Roy Kapur, President of The Film & Television Producers Guild of India Ltd., strongly condemned the “acts of vandalism” on the sets of Padmavati as a direct attack on freedom of expression in India’s democracy. “The film industry has become the softest target for any fringe group looking for media attention, and we need the strongest possible intervention from the concerned authorities to end this and to end it now,” he said. Priyanka, who worked with Bhansali in Bajirao Mastani, said: “Violence is not what our forefathers taught us.”

I have a long way to go: Nawazuddin JAIPUR: Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who is basking in the appreciation coming his way for his performance in Shah Rukh Khan starNawazuddin rer Raees, believes his journey as an actor has just begun. He says he has a long way to go. “My acting career kind of took off in 2012 and it has been a very satisfying journey so far. But it has just begun and I have a long way to go,” Nawazuddin told IANS. —IANS

‘Kaabil’: Paints every frame in glorious colors Film: “Kaabil”; Director: Sanjay Gupta; Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Yami Gautam, Ronit Roy and Rohit Roy; Rating: ****1/2

W

hy do awful things happen to good God-fearing, law-abiding, taxpaying, spouse-loving people? Look! Just see that man’s face. Rohit loves his wife Suparna to death. Her death, as it happens to be. A moment so shocking in the film and filmed with such gruesome pathos, that I found my hands going up to my mouth in sheer horror.

Kaabil tells a very simple twostoreyed story. In the first opulently romantic overture, Rohit is set up for a date with Suparna.

They meet in a string of beautifully beaded encounters — Rahul and Suparna Get Lost In A Mall, Rahul and Suparna Take To The Dance Floor, etc. Then they fall in

love, and get married. This is all familiar mush territory shot by cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee in a filtered haze of delirious romanticism. There is just one difference. Both Rohit and Suparna are blind. Well, technically, that is. For all practical purposes, they can see far better than many people around them. Kaabil is a film about love and its abrupt send-off. It is a violent film. But the emphasis is on the damage done to the soul of the wronged man. It must be seen for Hrithik Roshan’s incredibly moving performance and for the unexpected glimpse it provides into its director’s romantic personality.

Doctor hit by travel ban sues Trump BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- A Chicago doctor is stranded overseas by the travel ban imposed by President Donald Trump, and now he is taking on the President. Dr. Amer Al Homssi said he is ‘collateral damage’ in Trump’s immigration order, and is stranded in the Middle East where he traveled to get married 10 days ago. When the University of Illinois - Chicago doctor tried to return to the US on January 29, he said American authorities overseas blocked him from boarding the plane home. Al Homssi, 24, was at Abu Dhabi International Airport in the United Arab Emirates, heading home to Chicago where he works at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn as an internal medicine resident through his program at UIC. Al Homssi is a Syrian native who holds a UAE passport and an American J-1 student visa. On Jnauary 29, when Al Homssi got to the check-in area for US residents and visa-holders, the trouble began. Instead

of processing him through for the flight home, Al Homssi said that he was ordered into secondary security screening where he voluntarily turned over his cell phone and other personal belongings. A short time later, US officers informed him he wasn’t going anywhere because of Trump’s executive order banning immigration from seven Muslim-majority nations, including Syria, where he was born.

Durkin filed a federal lawsuit in Chicago naming top US officials and stating that al Homssi is “collateral damage in President Trump’s ill-planned and discriminatory executive order”.’ The suit states that Al Homssi’s “dreadful consequences...are the result of his being a member of the Muslim faith that is now being treated differently in the United States.”

Visa fraud lands Indians in jail BY A STAFF WRITER ACKSON, MS -- A federal judge has sentenced a former Jackson police officer to 3.5 years in prison after the officer pleaded guilty in October to preparing false police reports that people used to seek special visas allowing crime victims to remain in the United States. US District Judge Henry Wingate also sentenced at least four others in the case, including Tarun Patel, one of the Indian American men accused of the deepest involvement. Patel, a Missouri resident, was sentenced to five years in prison and three years of probation. Prosecutors say he and Sachin Patel collected $10,000 apiece or more to procure the visas for the other men. Rajan Patel received an eight-month

J

sentence, while Mahesh Patel and Sanjay Patel were each sentenced to 45 days. A total of 19 people were indicted on

charges of visa or marriage fraud allowing Indian men to obtain legal status in the US.

BY A STAFF WRITER ALLAS, TX -- An Indian American teacher in Texas has been suspended after a video of a controversial classroom stunt that shows her firing a water gun at an image of President Donald Trump went viral online. Payal Modi, an art teacher at Adamson High School in Dallas, Texas, was caught on camera shooting a squirt gun as a video of Trump at his inauguration ceremony was projected onto a whiteboard. An eight-second video of the incident was posted to a personal Instagram account on January 20, the date of Trump’s inauguration. As Modi shot the water gun at the image of Trump, she shouted “Die!” the video unveiled. Tens of thousands of people have seen the video since it was posted online on January 25, prompting an investigation from officials at the Dallas Independent School District. However, that has not stopped parents from voicing their concerns. Some students admit Modi’s actions were inappropriate, but ultimately, the majority believe the teacher was just making a joke. . Adamson High School junior Leslie Jaimes said she was in Modi’s second-period class when the teacher pulled out a squirt gun she had taken earlier from a student. “Trump came out and she shot at him, but like, it was just a water gun,” Jaimes said. “It’s no big deal.

Court bar on tax returns preparer

BY A STAFF WRITER TERLING, IL -- A federal court in Illinois has permanently enjoined Daria Emma Valdivia, individually and doing business under the name Emma’s Agency, from preparing federal tax returns for others. Valdivia agreed to the civil injunction order entered against her, which requires her to turn over to the United States a list of all persons for whom she prepared federal tax returns since 2012. The court also authorized the US to monitor Valdivia’s compliance with the terms of the injunction. According to the government’s complaint, Valdivia, of Sterling, Illinois, routinely prepared federal tax returns, from her business Emma’s agency, for customers that falsely claimed unqualified individuals as dependents, such as persons who did not live in the US or a country contiguous to the US.

Cops quiz woman on immigration status BY A STAFF WRITER EL AIR, MD -- An Indian American woman in Harford County in Maryland, Aravinda Pillalamarri, was stopped by the police recently while she was walking in her neighbourhood, and was questioned about her immigration status. Pillalamarri was walking in her Bel Air neighborhood on the morning of December 21 when a Bel Air police officer stopped her. The officer asked her what she was doing, to which she replied she was walking. And when Pillalamarri asked why the officer was asking her a number of questions, he said someone in the area had called the police. “Walking while brown?” Pillalamarri said she then asked the officer. The 47-year-old Indian American, who has lived in the city for more than three decades as a US naturalized citizen,

B

Aravinda Pillalamarri

was grilled further when a supervising officer responded to the area. The officers detained her because she was under criminal investigation. Pillalamarri, whose parents immigrated to the US when she was a baby, grew up in the city, attended Bel Air High School and told the police she walks in the area every day.

The officer asked why she had no identification on her and if she was in the country illegally. Pillalamarri relayed her story to the Bel Air Board of Town commissioners at a January 17 town meeting to raise awareness of people’s civil rights. Bel Air police Chief Charles Moore, who was at the meeting, said that immigration status is not the officers’ concern and asking it is breaking protocol. The only time immigration status comes into play is following an arrest, Moore said. In Pillalamarri’s case, there had been a call about suspicious activity and the officers responded. Moore admitted in the meeting that the officers could have shown more sensitivity. Pillalamarri said when she was stopped, as an ‘ordinary’ person, she wasn’t up to speed with how to interact with the police.

Store owner charged: cigarette smuggling BY A STAFF WRITER T. LOUIS, IL – The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged a Cook County, Illinois grocery store owner for allegedly purchasing millions of dollars of cigarettes at St Louis-area Sam’s Club stores at Missouri’s nationally lowest tax rate, and reselling them in Chicago for much higher profit using Illinois tax rates. According to prosecutor, the crimes took place between July 25, 2013 and July 12, 2015. The defendant, 49-year-old Walid Abdel Aziz Qaddoumi, owns and operates the 123 Grocery store located at 3708 Clarence Avenue in St. Louis. Prosecutors allege Qaddoumi used a false Missouri tax exemption certificate to sell the cigarettes at his store, but instead was taking them to Chicago to sell them at an inflated price and pocket the profits.

S

BY A STAFF WRITER ILES, IL-- Multiple suburban Niles residents have reported receiving bogus calls from someone pretending to be a Walgreens pharmacy employee. The calls come from several area codes, the police said, adding that several included the 402 area code. The callers’ numbers may look legitimate via caller ID, but are an actual different number. The caller identified themselves as being from the Walgreens pharmacy and says, “We are attempting to verify information for a pending prescription.” If the potential victim continues on the call, they will ask for driver’s license information, social security information, insurance information and any other personal identifiers. The police said this type of scam is called ‘phishing’, and aims to obtain personal information for identity theft or insurance fraud purposes.

New research throws light on cancer cells BY A STAFF WRITER T LOUIS, MO -- Research led by University of Missouri School of Medicine professor of radiology and physics Kattesh Katti has discovered a new minimally-invasive procedure that targets and destroys precancerous tumor cells in the livers of mice and invitro human cells. “The limitations when treating most forms of cancer involve collateral damage to healthy cells near tumor sites,” Katti, the lead author in the international study, said in a statement. “The components for this new therapy are inexpensive, do not have any issues associated with a shelf-life and are easy to produce,” the Indian American researcher said. “Most importantly, it does not involve the use of harsh chemotherapy drugs or radiation. It is a ‘green’ approach that also may lead to successful treatment of other forms of cancer.” The American Cancer Society has reported that more than 700,000 new cases of liver cancer are diagnosed annually throughout the globe.

N

EWARK, NJ -- Two men of Indian origin, admitted their roles in a conspiracy to illegally transport foreign nationals into the United States via commercial airline flights. Nilesh Patel, 42, and Harsad Mehta, 68, both of India, pleaded guilty on January 30, before US District Judge William Martini in Newark federal court to one count of conspiracy to smuggle foreign nationals into the US for commercial advantage and private financial gain. The conspiracy count carries a maximum potential sentence of 10 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for May 16. Patel and Mehta admitted that from June 2013 through October 2015, they carried out their money-making scheme by recruiting Indian nationals to enter and live in the US illegally, according to court documents made public by the US Attorney for New Jersey Paul Fishman. The two admitted that on July 24, 2014, they brought two Indian nationals to Bangkok, Thailand, so that they could be transported into the US. They also admitted paying an individual–who was actually an undercover officer–to transport the foreign nationals from Thailand into Newark.

Pakistan may be put on immigration ban list

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON,DC – For the first time, the White House has indicated that Pakistan could be included in a list of Muslimmajority countries from where immigration to the US has been banned by President Donald Trump. “The reason we chose those seven countries was, those were the seven countries that both the Congress and the Obama administration identified as being the seven countries that were most identifiable with dangerous terrorism taking place in their country,” White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus said. Trump’s controversial executive order, signed on January 28, halted the entire US refugee program for 120 days, indefinitely banned Syrian refugees, and suspended all nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries–Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Yemen, Syria and Somalia. “Now, you can point to other countries that have similar problems, like Pakistan and others. But for now, immediate steps, pulling the Band-Aid off, is to do further vetting for people traveling in and out of those countries,” Priebus said. This is for the first time that the Trump

W

Administration has publicly acknowledged about considering putting Pakistan into that list. Currently, the executive order says that visitors from countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan are subject to “extreme vetting.” Priebus said the executive orders were signed after a lot of planning. “We’re not going to advertise to the world that we’re going to put a stop or at least a further vetting on travel in and out of our country from these seven places,” Priebus said. “Some people have suggested, that we should have given everyone a three-day warning. But that would just mean that a terrorist would just move up their travel plans

by three days. “Identifying too many people in these countries and giving them a heads-up in these countries would only potentially flag the executive order for bad order,” he said. “The President has a call with leadership in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and other countries around world. And I’m sure this topic may come up,” he said. Priebus asserted that Americans have to be protected first. “These are countries that harbor and train terrorists. These are countries that we want to know who is coming and going in and out of to prevent calamities from happening in this country,” he said. “We’re not willing to be wrong on this subject. President Trump is not willing to take chances on this subject. He was elected president in many respects because people knew that he was going to be tough on immigration from countries that harbor terrorists,” Priebus said. “I can’t imagine too many people out there watching this right now think it’s unreasonable to ask a few more questions from someone traveling in and out of Libya and Yemen before being let loose in the US. And that’s all this is,” he said.

First Indian elected in Charlotte council BY A STAFF WRITER HARLOTTE, NC -- The Charlotte City Council in North Carolina has unanimously voted Indian American Dimple Ajmera to take over the District 5 council seat vacated by John Autry. The 30-year-old Ajmera, who works at TIAA in University City, by virtue of taking over the seat becomes the first Asian American on the council. Autry was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in November, opening up the District 5 seat, which covers much of east Charlotte, for Ajmera. She beat out five other people who had aspired to take over the seat. Ajmera says her priorities will be working on public safety and bringing economic development to the former Eastland Mall

property. Ajmera was sworn in days after the vote. She will maintain the seat until her term ends in December. Part of the council’s selection was picking a person who didn’t intend to run for the seat

this year, which Ajmera told the council she would abide by. Ajmera immigrated with her family to the United States from India when she was 16. She graduated from Southern High in Durham and then the University of Southern California. In addition to her time at TIAA, where she has been since 2011 as the project manager of asset management technology and program manager of finance, actuarial and corporate functions technology, Ajmera was the investment management account manager at Yardi and lead tax consultant at Deloitte. Additionally, she has served on the Charlotte Housing Authority board since January 2015 and founded the Tansen Ajmera Scholarships fund in 2011, providing financial assistance to students at various educational institutions.

CA Sikh restaurant owner is harassed

BY A STAFF WRITER OODLAND, CA -- A Sikh restaurant owner in Woodland, California, has become the target of abuse in the latest instance of alleged hate crime when unidentified vandals wrote ‘terrorist’ and ‘N’ word on the front wall of his Quiznos fast-food store this week. C.J. Singh found those words written on the wall when he came to work on January. 25. He said someone also tried to set the business on fire and stole money he had saved for donations and got away with the DVR for the surveillance cameras from the backroom, apparently to avoid getting caught. Other disturbed and concerned Sikh business owners and a Woodland City Council member gathered at the Quiznos to support Singh and stand up against intolerance. “We’re eager to move forward and figure out ways to combat the hatred and the intolerance that’s kind of resonated nationally from this most recent election,” according to a Fox40 report, quoting Woodland Mayor Pro Tem Enrique Fernandez. Singh said in late October, someone came into Quiznos, told him to “go back to his country” then threw a rock to the window, the report said. Singh said he and his family are now shaken and upset but not angry with whoever insulted their faith. Throughout the day, customers came in to eat at Quiznos to support Singh after hearing what happened.

2-yr jail for Indian in insider trading case BY A STAFF WRITER ROOKLINE, MS -- An Indian American former private equity investor has been jailed for nearly two years for tipping off two friends about the proposed 2013 acquisition of Cooper Tire & Rubber Company by India-based Apollo Tyre, an insider trading scheme that netted over $1 million in illegal profits. Amit Kanodia, 49, of Brookline, Mass., was sentenced last week by US District Court Judge Nathaniel Gorton to 20 months in prison, two years of supervised release, including 100 hours of community service, and a fine of $200,000. He was also ordered to forfeit $242,500, which represented his share of the illegal trading profits. In October last year, Kanodia was convicted by a federal jury, following a six-day trial, of one count of conspiracy and 10 counts of securities fraud. In the spring of 2013, Kanodia tipped off his two friends, Iftikar Ahmed and Steven Watson, about the contemplated acquisition of Cooper Tire & Rubber Company by India-based Apollo Tyres. Kanodia learned about the possible acquisition from his wife who was general

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK CITY -- NYPD officers were dispatched to guard some Muslim houses of worship in New York after six people were fatally shot at a Quebec (Canada) mosque on the night of January 29. Gunmen opened fire on the Islamic Cultural Center of Quebec about 8 pm, killing six and injuring eight others in what Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called a ‘terrorist attack on Muslims’. Two people were taken into custody after the attack. The NYPD’s Critical Response Command has been assigned to ‘certain mosque locations’ in New York, say NYPD officials. Police officers were also directed to give special attention to all mosques and houses of worship throughout the city, officials said. The New York police are continuing

counsel for Apollo at the time. In the months leading up to the public announcement of the acquisition, both Ahmed and Watson purchased shares and options in Cooper Tire, which trades on the New York Stock Exchange. On the day of the announcement, Cooper Tire’s share price increased 41 percent and Ahmed and Watson began selling their interests in the company for a combined profit of more than $1 million.

Both Ahmed and Watson paid Kanodia a portion of their illegal profits as part of the deal between them. In November 2016, Watson was sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to pay a fine of $25,000. He was also ordered to forfeit the almost $170,000 in illegal trading profits that he made on the scheme. Ahmed, an IIT Delhi and Harvard Business School graduate, remains a fugitive.

Trump defends ban on Muslims’ entry

BY A STAFF WRITER A S H I N G TO N , D C - President Donald Trump has defended his controversial plan to limit the entry of people from some Muslim countries to combat terrorism. However, he was non-committal on whether nations like Pakistan, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia would be figuring in the proposed visa ban list. When asked about countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia figuring in the list, he said, “ We’re going to have extreme vetting in all cases. And I mean extreme. And we’re not letting people in if we think there’s even a little chance of some problem.” “We are excluding certain countries, but for other countries, we’re going to have extreme vetting. It’s going to be very hard to come in,” said Trump, refusing to be pinned down on which countries he was talking about. Trump denied that it was a ban on Muslims. “No, it’s not the Muslim ban, but it’s countries that have tremendous terror,” he said. “Right now, it’s very easy to come in. It’s going to be very, very hard. I don’t want terror in this country. You look at what happened in San Bernardino. You look at what happened

all over. You look at what happened in the World Trade Center, OK? I mean, take that as an example. People don’t even bring that up,” he said. Asked if he was concerned if this would anger Muslims around the world, he said, “Anger? There’s plenty of anger right now. How can you have more?” “The world is a mess. The world is as angry as it gets. What, you think this is going to cause a little more anger? The world is an angry place. All of this has happened. We went into Iraq. We

shouldn’t have gone into Iraq. We shouldn’t have gotten out the way we got out. The world is a total mess. The world is a mess,” the President said. According to a draft executive order published in the US media, refugees from wartorn Syria will be indefinitely banned. “The broader US refugee admissions program will be suspended for 120 days, and all visa applications from countries deemed a terrorist threat--Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen--will be halted for 30 days.”

Professor drops voting discrimination case BY A STAFF WRITER OPPELL, TX -- University of North Texas Professor Pankaj Jain has dropped his lawsuit claiming voting discrimination against the Coppell Independent School District (CISD). The Indian American educator, who filed the lawsuit in September 2016 claiming the Texas school district violated the Voting Rights Act of 1965, dropped the suit in mid-January. Federal District Court Judge Sidney A. Fitzwater granted a motion for the dismissal of the case at the request of Jain and his representation at the Brewer Storefront. Jain filed the suit against Coppell ISD in September claiming that the school district’s at-large voting system denies Asian American voters a fair opportunity to elect school board representatives of their choice Based on the district’s demographics, there should be at least one Asian American school board member, the lawsuit claimed. As an at-

large system, board members are elected based on how the entire city votes, not individual districts. None of the seven CISD members is Asian American. School board president Anthony Hill was happy the lawsuit has been dismissed. According to Brewer Storefront, Asian students account for the largest ethnic or racial group enrolled in the school district, at 41

UPCOMING

percent, citing Texas Education Agency data. What’s more, American Community Survey Census data gathered in 2014 says that about 18 percent of all voting-aged citizens in the district are Asian American, accounting for roughly 4,860 voters. CISD’s current election system states that school board members are elected at-large, with candidates running for specific places but not representing a specific geographic area. Jain, the author of the award-winning “Dharma and Ecology of Hindu Communities: Sustenance and Sustainability,” moved to Coppell with his wife and two children in 2010. Prior to becoming a professor at UNT, teaching in the philosophy and religion and anthropology departments, he served as a lecturer at Rutgers University and North Carolina State University. The India native, who is now a US citizen and registered voter, unsuccessfully ran for the school board in May 2016.

Paraman Radhakishan

BY A STAFF WRITER RAND FORKS, ND -- A 53-yearold Indian has been taken into custody by the police in North Dakota for allegedly making a bomb threat at an airport as he told a travel agent that there was an explosive in his bag. Paraman Radhakishan, from India, was taken into custody at the Grand Forks International Airport. He faces terrorism charges. The police said Radhakishan was taken into custody after he told a travel agent at the Grand Forks International Airport around 5:14 am on January 28 that there was a bomb in his bag. As a precautionary measure, operations were suspended. The Grand Forks Regional Bomb Squad “evaluated the validity of the threat,” a statement said. Airport operations were soon normalized. Radhakishan, a businessman from Gujarat, was on his way from Grand Forks to Minneapolis. Radhakishnan’s motive is still under investigation but the police said it is possible he became upset with airport staff, adding that any threat of this kind is taken seriously.

Now fashion is all about business: Rina Dhaka NEW DELHI: She was considered one of the promising young faces when she burst on to the Indian fashion scene in the 1980s and today has clients like Naomi Campbell, Martha Marzotto and Uma Thurman, to name a few. Designer Rina Dhaka says when she joined the industry, there was no concept of money or trade and the world of Indian fashion was a different one altogether. In an interview with IANS, the designer reflected upon the changes in the fashion industry. “When we came in, there was no concept of money or trade. We came in because there was art and craft and fun, and we wanted to make clothes between a muse and the fact that late (designer) Rohit Khosla in a beautiful house in Maharani Bagh had a 1,000 sq ft place for a single tailor who made my clothes,” Dhaka said There was no bill ever, we just made them and worked from show to show,” she added.

Day two will be dedicated to sustainable fashion, as well as observe Indian Textile Day. It will pay tribute to the rich heritage of Indian handwoven luxury. There will be a show by IMG Reliance Ltd dedicated to Kutch artisans, and e-commerce platform AJIO.com will present a show called Sustainable Man, where designers Rajesh Pratap Singh and Abraham and Thakore will unveil their range. Falguni-Shane Peacock, who have styled the likes of Lady Gaga, Madonna and Britney Spears, will be showcasing a line called ‘Rebel’. “The collection is inspired by the constellation/galaxy and fused with nature. The color pallete will vary from silver, grey, blues, black, nude to champagne. The collection will see a selection of short dresses, gowns and body suits,” Falguni told IANS. Other names to showcase their work are Narendra Kumar, Kunal Rawal, Gaurang Shah, Payal Singhal, Nishka Lulla and Anushree Reddy. Anita Dongre will bring the curtains down on the event on February 5 at the Bandra fort.

MUMBAI: Romanian TV presenter Iulia Vantur, who has been in news for her rumored relationship with Bollywood superstar Iulia Vantur Salman Khan, is set to walk as showstopper for brand Splash’s latest line at the forthcoming Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Summer/Resort 2017. “It’s the very first show for both, the brand and me, in India and it cannot get better than this. The idea of being ‘in love with fashion’ totally resonates with me,” Vantur said in a statement.

Diana Penty to walk for Payal Singhal MUMBAI: Actress Diana Penty is set to walk for popular designer Payal Singhal at the forthcoming Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Summer/Resort 2017 next month. Asked who would be walking as a showstopper for her collection at the gala, Singhal told IANS: “Diana Penty will be walking for us.” On February 3, the designer will showcase her collection titled ‘Lady M’, inspired by the dark romanticism of the murder mystery book “Death on the Nile” by Agatha Christie. Singhal says Diana is a fitting embodiment of the collection. —IANS

“It was a different world altogether. We did these shows aiming to dress up the models; nobody in the fashion industry cared about the audience, nobody cared about why we were doing it,” Dhaka told IANS. Today, the concept has really changed, it’s all about business. And some designers, as a result, have done extremely well,” Dhaka added. —IANS

ris Mittenaere from France took her first walk as Miss Universe 2016 after host Steve Harvey announced her as the winner in Philippines India's Roshmitha Harimurthy couldn't even make it to the top 13. Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach crowned the 23-yearold Mittenaere, who was born in northern French town of Lille, at the glittering ceremony at Mall of Asia Arena. Mittenaere has kept herself busy the last five years by pursuing her degree in Dental Surgery. She has also been always fond of extreme sports, travelling the world and cooking French dishes. Miss Haiti Raquel Pelissier was announced the first runner-up while Miss Columbia Andrea Tovar was named the second runner-up at the ceremony, which had former Miss Universe and Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen on the judging panel. She said:

Iris Mittenaere of France won the title of Miss Universe 2016, leaving the beauty queens from 86 different countries.

"This is the moment where a Miss Universe is created. She gives an answer that connects larger consciousness so a well spoken Miss Universe is the idea and tonight I can see six of them right there." After Sushmita's victory back in 1994 in Manila itself, it was just Lara Dutta from India who clinched the title in 2000.

Roshmitha, 22, failed to make it to the final 13 list of the pageant, which was also judged by Cynthia Bailey, Mickey Boardman, Leila Lopes, Dayanara Torres and Francine LeFrak. The 65th edition of the pageant raised global issues that need attention, including Donald Trump presidency and the ban on refugees.
