A DIRE ULTIMATUM
The US President warned Pyongyang, saying, “North Korea best not make any more threats to the US. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen.”
Trump warns action against N. Korea amid n-tensions IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Donald Trump has warned North Korea that he would respond to any threats “with fire and fury like the world has never seen,” following reports that Pyongyang has developed miniaturized nuclear warheads that can be mounted on a ballistic missile. “North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen,” Trump said to reporters at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, Efe news reported this week. “He has been very threatening, beyond a normal statement,” Trump said regarding North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. “As I said they will be met with fire, fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before.” Trump did not elaborate on his point and made no other specific remarks, but his comments come shortly after the daily Washington Post reported data from a new report by the US Defense Intelligence Agency about North Korea. According to this DIA report, which was finalized last month, North Korea has managed to produce a miniaturized nuclear war-

Trump has God’s nod to take out Kim: Pastor WASHINGTON: The US President has been granted the moral authority by the God to “take out” North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, a leading pastor has said. “When it comes to how we should deal with evil doers, the Bible, in the book of Romans, is very clear: God has endowed rulers full power to use whatever means necessary, including war, to stop evil,” said Robert Jeffress, Texas megachurch pastor.
head that can be placed onto one of its ballistic missiles. The document obtained by the Washington daily said that the intelligence community found that North Korea has produced nuclear arms that it can deliver many thousands of miles via ICBMs. In addition, Pyongyang on Tuesday threatened to take serious action following the imposition of sanctions last Saturday by the UN Security Council, a measure North Korea called “illegal” and a “terrorist act.” The UN sanctions come in response to the first intercontinental ballistic missile test in North Korea’s history on July 4.
‘US’ Guam bases strike plan ready by mid-August’ IANS, SEOUL
N
orth Korea’s military said on Thursday that it is working on a plan to fire four intermediate-range ballistic missiles near the US territory of Guam, which will be ready to present to leader Kim Jong-un by mid-August. The state agency KCNA said the plan, if implemented, would see four Hwasong-12 missiles fired into waters 30 to 40 km off the coast of the US territory in response to escalating rhetoric from US President Donald Trump. “The rockets to be launched by the KPA (Korean People’s Army) will cross the sky above Shimane, Hiroshima and Kochi prefectures of Japan,” the KCNA said, quoting Army Chief General Kim Rak Gyom. North Korea’s strategic force is “seriously examining the plan in order to interdict the enemy forces on major military bases on Guam and to signal a crucial warning to the US,” the KCNA reported. It said the military would finally complete the plan by mid-August and send it to Kim Jong-un for his approval. Earlier this week, Trump vowed to meet any additional threats from Pyongyang with “fire and fury”, a statement backed by strong words from US Defense Secretary James Mattis. He issued a strongly worded
Kim Jong-un
statement on Wednesday calling on Pyongyang to halt its arms programme. “The DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) must choose to stop isolating itself and stand down its pursuit of nuclear weapons,” he said. However, the state media denounced Trump’s warnings and said “sound dialogue is not possible with such a guy bereft of reason”. “This is extremely getting on the nerves of the infuriated Hwasong artillerymen of the KPA,” it said. The North first announced on Wednesday that it had been drawing up plans for a missile strike against Guam, a Pacific island which is home to US military bases, strategic bombers and about 163,000 people. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson sought to reassure Americans that North Korea does not pose an imminent threat, CNN reported.
US Agriculture Department Transgender service members sue Trump bans use of ‘climate change’ IANS, WASHINGTON
WASHINGTON: The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has directed its officials to avoid using the term “climate change” in their work, and refer to “weather extremes” instead. According to the Guardian, a series of emails between officials of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), a USDA unit that oversees farmers’ land conservation, show the Trump administration had in February listed “climate change” in the “avoid” category. The term was replaced by “weather extremes”.
An official statement from Bianca Moebius-Clune, director of soil health, instructed employees to use “resilience to weather extremes”, instead of “climate change adaption”. The term “sequester carbon” is also ruled out and replaced by “build soil organic matter”, the daily reported this week. In an email to staff, MoebiusClune said: “We won’t change the modelling, just how we talk about it — there are a lot of benefits to putting carbon back in the sail [sic], climate mitigation is just one of them.” —IANS
F
ive active duty transgender service members have filed the first lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s directive to prohibit transgender individuals from serving in the armed forces. The unnamed plaintiffs filed the lawsuit this week under the pseudonym — “Jane Doe” Nos. 1-5 — in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, The New York Times reported. The lawsuit complaint argued that banning transgenders from serving in the military would be unconstitutional discrimination, violating their rights to equal pro-
tection and due process. It also argued that the administration could not end people’s military careers for coming out openly as transgender because they did so in relying on the Pentagon itself saying
they would be permitted to serve. The case was organized by two rights groups, the National Centre for Lesbian Rights and GLBTQ Legal Advocates and Defenders (GLAD).

‘Indian forces well prepared’
With India and China having been locked in a stand-off in the Doklam area, Defense Minister Arun Jaitley has assured preparedness of Indian armed forces IANS, NEW DELHI
A
mid a border stand-off with China, Defense Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday said India did learn lessons from the 1962 war and asserted that Indian armed forces can now meet any challenge. “In the 1962 war (with China), we learnt a lesson that our forces have to be fully prepared. The preparedness showed results when in 1965, in comparison to 1962, and in 1971, in comparison to 1965, our forces grew stronger,” Jaitley said while initiating a special debate in the Rajya Sabha on the 75th anniversary of the Quit India movement. “Some people have designs on our country’s sovereignty and integrity. But I am fully confident that our brave soldiers are capable of keeping our country secure, be it the challenge on the eastern or

the western border,” said Jaitley, who is also the Finance Minister. In 1962, India suffered humiliation at the hands of the Chinese, while in 1965 India fought back Pakistan and in 1971 it humbled Pakistan in the Bangladesh war.
India and China have been locked in a stand-off in the Doklam area for two months, with the Chinese media threatening India with “1962-like consequences” if it does not back off. Jaitley identified two challenges
— one from LeftWing Extremism and another from “across the border as also some people within the country who go astray and take to arms and try to spread terror in the northern parts of the country”. “In these circumstances, the entire nation should speak in one voice as to how we should strengthen the nation’s institutions and how to fight terror,” he said. Jaitley said terrorism was a big challenge to the nation’s integrity that had claimed the lives of “one Prime Minister (Indira Gandhi in 1984) and one former Prime Minister (Rajiv Gandhi in 1991). Pointing out that when the national leaders gave the call for Quit India in 1942, the entire nation stood with them due to their credibility, the Minister said such credibility of public figures and institutions was no longer seen and needed to be restored.
Hyderabad suicide blast case: All accused acquitted HYDERABAD: A court on Thursday acquitted all the 10 accused in a case relating to a suicide bomb blast at a police building here in 2005. The Metropolitan Sessions Court acquitted them due to lack of evidence. A Home Guard was killed and another injured when a suicide bomber from Bangladesh blew himself up at the Task Force office in the high-security Begumpet area on October 12, 2005. A Special Investigation Team claimed that Harkatul Jihad-e-Islami (HUJI) of Bangladesh was involved in the blast. The suicide bomber was identified as HUJI activist Dalin. The SIT arrested Mohammed Abdul Zahid, Abdul Kaleem, Shakeel, Syed Haji, Ajmal Ali Khan, Azmat Ali, Mahmood Baroodwala, Shaik Abdul Khaja, Nafees Biswas and Bilaluddin, and filed chargesheets against them. Abdul Azeem, counsel for the accused, said that the prosecution failed to provide evidence.
Sushma Swaraj in Nepal, meets PM Deuba ‘Hope Doklam is resolved peacefully’
GANDHINAGAR: Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel on Wednesday dealt a severe blow to the BJP when he won the Rajya Sabha election in Gujarat in a cliffhanger contest in which the top BJP leadership staked its all by backing a Congress defector. BJP President Amit Shah also won the election to make his debut in parliament while Union Minister Smriti Irani got another term in the upper house. Patel got 44 votes that was just enough to beat his rival Congress defector Balwantsinh Rajput and earn a fifth term in Rajya Sabha while Shah and Irani got 46 and 45 votes respectively in the counting that was delayed by over nine hours because of the Congress challenge in the Election Commission first and the BJP’s objections before the returning officer past midnight. Celebrations broke out in the Congress camp with workers setting off firecrackers and distributing sweets as Patel reacted saying “truth alone triumphs”. “This is not just my victory. It is a defeat of the most blatant use of money power, muscle power and abuse of state machinery,” he tweeted.

arendra Modi must be realizing by now that it is easier to demolish than to construct. He is unlikely to have spent sleepless nights before abolishing the Planning Commission. Instead, it was widely seen as a bold move in keeping with his personality. The scrapping of the 64-yearold institution was generally hailed as it was felt that this relic of a Soviet-style economy was out of place in a free market system. However, the commission’s replacement by the rather pompously named National Institution for Transforming India or the NITI Aayog was perceived from the start as new wine in an old bottle. Even then, the appointment of well-known economist Arvind Panagariya, a professor of Columbia University, as the vice-chairman gave hope that it would be an improvement on its former avatar although the commission, too, had distinguished economists in that position. Panagariya’s selection was not surprising since he had been a longstanding supporter of Modi’s eco-
nomic policies like another reputed economist settled in the US, Jagdish Bhagwati. It seemed, therefore, like a new beginning in sync with the Modi’s developmental initiatives. Over the next three years, however, the NITI Aayog was not seen as setting the official agenda, for its
The Planning Commission’s replacement by the rather pompously named NITI Aayog was perceived from the start as new wine in an old bottle proposals for disinvestment and enabling women to work at night were strongly criticized by affiliates of the RSS like the the trade union, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS). Their views, which echoed the opinions of their ideological opposite, the Left, were that Panagariya was tilting in favor of the capitalists and did not know anything about the conditions in India. For instance, as the BMS said, Indian women have to perform
“heavy household duties” unlike in the West. So night shifts will be an additional burden for them. According to the trade union body, the NITI Aayog comprised “lopsided intellectuals” who were misleading the government. It was only a question of time, therefore, before Panagariya would realize that Modi was not quite on top of the situation as he was in Gujarat. Hence, his resignation presumably because he saw that while Modi was not too bothered about a patently weak opposition, he had to contend with powerful lobbies in the saffron brotherhood whose perception of a Hindu India was totally at variance with the concept of private enterprises functioning in an open society which encouraged a large measure of freedom in terms of lifestyle choices. Arvind Panagariya’s selection was not surprising since he had been a long-standing supporter of Modi’s economic policies like another reputed economist settled in the US, Jagdish Bhagwati.

Indian-Americans get key govt posts

T
he US Senate has confirmed three IndianAmericans picked by President Donald Trump for key governmental posts. Neil Chatterjee was confirmed on August 3 as member of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), which oversees electricity, natural gas and oil at the national level. Krishna R. Urs was confirmed as the Ambassador to Peru while Vishal Amin got the post of White House Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator. Chatterjee will play a key role in Trump’s program to reshape energy policy, most of which is opposed by environmentalists and Democrats. He is the second Indian American to be appointed by Trump to a major regulatory position with a controversial mission. Chatterjee held the influential position of energy policy advisor to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and helped shape energy legislation. His work backed the Senator’s campaign against regulations to restrict use of coal for electricity generation. Among issues he will likely deal with are Trump’s plans to allow the

Chauhan takes up top job for New York’s Nassau county NEW YORK: Indian American Dilip Chauhan has been appointed as Deputy Comptroller for Minority Affairs in New York’s Nassau county. Chauhan has been active in several community and business organizations in the New York area and had joined the Comptroller’s office in 2015 as Director for Community Affairs, South and East Asia. He served as senior advisor to the Comptroller since early 2017, the New India Times newspaper reported. His promotion recognizes the importance of helping the County increase its out-
reach to the minority communities, said Nassau County Comptroller George Marago in a statement. The Comptroller’s Office has been a driving force in advocating for increased business opportunities for Minority and Women Owned Enterprises (MWBEs) and veterans to meet the county’s aspirational goals, the statement said. “Dilip Chauhan has done an outstanding job for the County in advancing the Comptroller’s mission by assisting members of the minority communities to better navigate local
government, helping resolve governmental issues faced by minority constituents and ensuring MWBEs gain full access to business opportunities,” said Maragos. “I have the utmost confidence that Dilip will be a strong advocate for our minority communities in ensuring that Nassau County Government serves all resident equally.” Chauhan called his appointment to the position “an honor and a privilege”. He said he will keep supporting the Comptroller’s efforts to provide equal opportunity for MWBEs to do business with Nassau County. —IANS

‘Harvard biased against Indians, Asians’ ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK
P
resident Donald Trump’s administration is preparing to probe a complaint by four Indian-American organizations and other Asian groups that Harvard University discriminates against students from the communities in its admission process. Justice Department Spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said on Wednesday the department wants to investigate the “administrative complaint filed by a coalition of 64 Asian-American associations in May 2015 that the prior Administration left unresolved”. Flores said: “The complaint alleges racial discrimination against Asian-Americans in a university’s admission policy and practices.” The Global Organization of Persons of Indian Origin (Gopio), National Federation of IndianAmerican Associations, American Society of Engineers of Indian Origin, and BITS Sindri Alumni Association of North India were among the 64 Asian groups that jointly filed the federal complaint. The complaint said: “Many Asian-American students who have almost perfect SAT (Scholastic

Aptitude Test) scores, top one per cent GPAs (Grade Point Average), plus significant awards or leadership positions in various extracurricular activities have been rejected by Harvard University and other Ivy League Colleges while similarly situated applicants of other races have been admitted.” SAT is one of the common entrance exams for college admission. Though officially the affirmative action programmes are
meant to aid African American and Latino students, in reality the quota system — similar to reservations in India — has expanded to also helps white students at the expense of Indian and other Asian students. To ensure diversity, elite universities set academic standards for Asian students that are higher than that for even whites to prevent high-scoring Asians dominating the universities if admissions were
based solely on merit. A study by a Princeton University academic found that AsianAmerican students had to score 140 points more than whites in the SAT to gain admission to elite universities. If a comparison is to be made to the Indian situation, Asians would be classified as “most forward” over the “forward” category. Gopio International Chairman Thomas Abraham said he welcomed the Trump administration’s move to take up the complaint by the Indian and other Asian organizations. He conceded that there was a need for affirmative action programmes to right the historical injustices done to the African Americans, Latinos and Native Americans and, therefore, he supported it for only those communities. But “in the general quota for all the others there should not be any discrimination against Indians or Asians,” he added.

ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday began the second leg of his “homecoming rally” to Lahore via the Grand Trunk (GT) Road after an overnight stay in Rawalpindi. He began his journey on Wednesday morning from Islamabad and due to the massing of supporters on the way the rally could only reach Rawalpindi, 20 km from the capital, in 12 hours, Geo News reported. Sharif, however, was not happy with the number of supporters at the rally. Prior to his departure from Rawalpindi’s Punjab House, the former Prime Minister held a meeting with PML-N officials and expressed anger with the
administration over the low turnout of supporters, Dawn newspaper reported. An estimated 1,500 party workers were taking part in the procession on Thursday, the report said. In his late night address to his supporters at Rawalpindi’s Committee Chowk, Sharif called the apex court’s decision to depose him last month a “joke” and an insult to voters. Sharif sought the people’s promise to get their mandate respected. The former Premier said that he did not want their support for his reinstatement but for changing the destiny of the country. —IANS

he Syrian army and allied fighters captured on Tuesday three villages in the southeastern countryside of Raqqa, becoming close to the last Islamic State (IS) stronghold there, a military source told Xinhua on Tuesday. With this progress, the army forces are about two km from Madan, the last IS-held town in the eastern countryside of Raqqa, the source said on condition of anonymity. The Syrian troops have already captured the western and southern countryside of Raqqa.

Capturing Ma’dan will put the Syrian forces on the western administrative borders of the eastern province of Deir ez-Zor, the
capital city of which is besieged by the IS. The Syrian army is also advancing in the desert in central Syria, particularly after capturing the Sukhneh city in the eastern countryside of Homs, which is also adjacent to the administrative borders of Deir ezZor. The wide-scale military offensive in the Syrian desert and the countryside of Raqqa is to break the IS siege and end its presence in Deir ez-Zor. Meanwhile, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are also advancing inside Raqqa, and have taken control of 55 percent of the city following a two-month battle with IS.

Another Whitehall source told the daily that Britain’s offer was “30 billion euros to 40 billion euros” while a third source said May was prepared to pay “north of 30 billion euros”. Britain has dismissed an ultimatum by the EU to pay a “divorce bill” of around 60 billion euros before sitting at the negotiating table.

Dumped Dinakaran hits back at party He was sacked with an aim of placating the rival faction ahead of a possible merger between them IANS, CHENNAI
T
amil Nadu's ruling AIADMK this week sacked its Deputy General Secretary T.T.V. Dinakaran, nephew of the jailed General Secretary V.K. Sasikala, in a move aimed at placating the rival faction ahead of a possible merger between the two groups. The AIADMK announced after a nearly one-hour meeting attended by Chief Minister K. Palaniswami and some 30 ministers and party leaders that Dinakaran's appointment was "improper, unacceptable and invalid", clearing the decks for the unification of the two factions. An AIADMK statement said Dinakaran's appointment was not done as per rules and declared as null and void all the appointments of office-bearers he had made. It added that Sasikala's own appoint-
BJP to hold mega roadshow in Kerala NEW DELHI: To keep the heat on the Left government in Kerala over killings of BJP and RSS workers, the BJP will hold a "mega roadshow" after Onam to be attended by top leaders including President Amit Shah and Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states. After the killing of RSS officebearer E. Rajesh on July 29 in Thiruananthapuram, the BJP has stepped up its attack on the Left Front government, accusing it of escalating political violence in the state aimed at crushing the BJP and RSS. The roadshow will begin from Kannur and proceed to Thiruvananthapuram early next month. "After Onam, our Kerala President Kummanam Rajashekaran will begin a 460-km 'Padyatra' from Kannur, probably on September 8, that will culminate at Thiruvananthapuram after covering 10 districts," a BJP leader told IANS. "We are giving final shape to the programme but it is sure that Amit Shah will flag off the yatra and address a huge gathering at its culmination," he added. Apart from senior union ministers including Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states will join and address the yatra. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has already visited Thiruvananthapuram and met Rajesh's family. The BJP, which has just one member in the 140-seat Kerala assembly, is also planning to take up the issue of political killings with the National Human Rights Commission as well as the ST and SC Commissions. —IANS

ment as General Secretary was under the scrutiny of the Election Commission. While there was no immediate reaction from the rival faction led
by former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, a furious Dinakaran hit back. Dinakaran, made the Deputy General Secretary by Sasikala
before she was jailed for corruption, hundred at a press conference: "No one has the right to remove or expel me. Only Sasikala has the power. "There are some AIADMK leaders who are scared because of the things they have done," he said, and added, in an oblique reference to the BJP: "Also they are scared because of some outside forces." Panneerselvam have said Sasikala's expulsion was a precondition for the merger of the two AIADMK factions. The AIADMK used to refer to Sasikala until recently as "Chinnamma". The statement called her "Respectable Mrs V.K. Sasikala" - a clear sign of her weakening hold in a party she tried to take over after the death in December of then Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. Tamil Nadu Finance Minister D. Jayakumar said: "We will have
the merger very soon," A Panneerselvam aide, K.P. Munusamy, said they were firm on their demand on the expulsion of Sasikala from the AIADMK, a CBI probe into Jayalalitha's death and withdrawal of affidavits submitted to the Election Commission naming Sasikala as General Secretary. The two factions will have to unite if they need to get back the party's popular "two leaves" election symbol that has been frozen by the Election Commission. Minus the frozen symbol, AIADMK leaders admit they will have problems taking on the DMK in the upcoming local body polls. According to AIADMK sources, Chief Minister Palaniswami and Panneerselvam are travelling to Delhi on Thursday to take part in the swearing in ceremony of Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu and may meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

explaining the reasons behind her extreme step, said Pathri police station official Mushtaque A. Ansari. The heart-wrenching note starts
by referring to her heavily debtstruck uncle Chandikadas Zute, who committed suicide on August 3 (five days earlier) by consuming
poison in the fields. “There is a lot of tension at home after (Sharda) sister’s marriage... You have still not been able to repay the wedding loan and the agriculture loans. Now, you have the responsibility of my marriage... I don’t want you to end your life like your brother (Chandikadas). So I am killing myself,” she wrote. “Since the past one year, after our sister Sharda’s marriage, Sarika had been tormented about her own marriage, which was being planned for next year, and has taken this step,” her oldest brother Sachin Zute told IANS. She was a quiet girl, engrossed in her studies and studied in Class 12 Arts stream in Shivani College, in adjoining Beed district.

D
irector Rahesh is appalled by the decision of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to not certify his upcoming Tamil film Marainthirunthu Paarkum Marmam Enna, which explores crime in grave detail. “My film is about day-to-day crimes that happen around us. In order to keep everything realistic, I have shown techniques that are used to commit the crimes,” Rahesh told IANS. He claims the CBFC committee had problems with the detailing with which he has showcased crimes. “I was asked why I showcased the chain-snatching incidents.

Their questions shocked me and at the same time I was clueless. You showcase a road accident and use that to endorse the safety of wearing helmets. You can’t say you don’t
want blood to be shown in the road accident,” he said. Rahesh says he is not endorsing crime through his film, but is trying to create awareness.
“For instance, I have shown how chain snatching is usually done and I have also explained what needs to be done to be safe. “The government is screening the statutory warning on smoking advertisements in theatres. Can they screen the ad without showing the cigarette?,” he asked. Rahesh has been directed to go to the Revising Committee for certification. “I told the board I won’t mind if they give me U/A or even A certificate. But they just were not ready to certify my film. “They have asked me to go to Revising Committee. The process should take three to four weeks,” he said. Mostly starring newcomers, the film features actor-filmmaker J.D. Chakravarthy in a crucial role.

After ‘Quit India,’ time for a New India
During a special discussion in the Lok Sabha, Modi urges MPs to rise above political differences and join in the common effort to create an India of the dreams of freedom fighters

P
rime Minister Narendra Modi this week called for accelerated efforts to rid the country of corruption, poverty, illiteracy and malnutrition as parliamentarians expressed their resolve to work towards creating an India of the dreams of freedom fighters by 2022 to mark Independence’s 75th anniversary. The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha held special discussions to mark the 75th anniversary of Quit India movement and adopted resolutions to express people’s collective desire to make a strong, prosperous, clean and corruption-free country. Opposition leaders including Congress President Sonia Gandhi recalled the sacrifices of freedom fighters and also took digs at the government over its economic policies and “attacks on democracy”. Participating in the special discussion in the Lok Sabha, the prime minister said that the five years from 1942 were “transformative” in march towards freedom and urged MPs to rise above political differences and join in the common effort to create an India of the dreams of freedom fighters in the next five years. “If in 1942 the clarion call was ‘kargenge ya marenge (do or die)’, today the call should be ‘karenge

In the nearly 40-minute long speech, Modi recalled the role played by Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Chandrashekhar Azad, Sukhdev, Jayaprakash Narayan and others but did not mention country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. “When Mahatma Gandhi, a leader who always propagated non-
violence, raised the call to ‘Do or Die’, every one was imbued with this spirit. Five years was all it took to achieve the objective of Independence, once the entire country shared this resolve. “From 2017 to 2022, when India turns 75, we need to create the same spirit that existed from 1942 to 1947,” he said, urging people to take a pledge to end corruption, poverty, malnutrition and illiteracy besides ensuring gender equality. Rural sanitation at 66%, 2.17 lakh villages free of open defecation When the Swachh Bharat mission was launched in 2014, rural sanitation coverage was only 39 per cent. A healthy tradition has now begun as the country celebrates 70th I-Day IANS, NEW DELHI
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi said this week that rural sanitation coverage had gone up from 39 per cent to 66 percent in the last three years and 2.17 lakh villages were now free of open defecation. Addressing the 99th birthday celebrations of Dada Vaswani in Pune, Modi called upon NGOs to help make sanitation a mass movement. Lauding Dada Vaswani’s thoughts on “Making the Right Choice”, the Prime Minister said that if people resolve to make the right choice, evils such as corruption, casteism, drug abuse and crime can be overcome. “A reason for evils in the society is that despite knowing what is right and what is not, some people choose the wrong alternative. Making the right choice and moving on it is a basis for creating a stong society,” Modi said.

He said when the Swachh Bharat mission was launched in 2014, rural sanitation coverage was only 39 percent. “Today it has reached 66 per-
cent. A healthy tradition has also begun. There is competition among villages, districts and states to be open defecation free. Till now 2.17 lakh villages have
become open defecation free,” Modi said. The prime minister said Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Kerala
had been declared open defecation free. Modi said toilets can be constructed and employees can be asked to clean roads but to keep them clean on a regular basis needed all round efforts. “I want to make an appeal to every NGO through this programme... Cleanliness is not a situation but a habit. It should become part of our nature. If practised daily, the habit will become the nature of the society,” the prime minister said. Referring to climate change, he said steps such as afforestation, making energy out of waste and increase in use of solar energy will help meet the challenge. He said the county was taking a pledge of making a “new India” to fulfill the dreams of freedom fighters by 2022, the 75th anniversary of the country’s Independence. He urged the Sadhu Vaswani Mission to join this effort. Modi said targets should be such which can be measured in numbers.

Visionary Modi set for 2nd innings

Modi’s success is based on the image of being a man of development which has remained untainted by any scandal AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
C
onsidering that the score line in the last round of assembly elections before Narendra Modi’s third anniversary of the assumption of power was 3-2 in the Congress’s favor, one can only say that his approval rating has been average. True, the final line-up of winners became 4-1 because the prime minister’s factotums were able to dislodge the Congress from its No 1 position in Goa and Manipur with some nimble politicking. It was the BJP’s overwhelming success in Uttar Pradesh which reinforced Modi’s larger-than-life image. But the reality is more mundane even if the country has been able to emerge from the policy paralysis of the twilight years of the Manmohan Singh government by achieving a more than seven per
cent growth rate, up from 5.6 per cent in 2012-13 and 6.6 per cent in 2013-14. If a recent study nevertheless showed that 60 per cent of the respondents thought well of Modi, it meant that a large section of the people have retained their faith in his ability to take the country in the right economic direction. There may be misgivings about the activities of the saffron militants. But these are probably seen as being isolated incidents which are highlighted by the media and do not affect the average people who are more concerned about the continuing unemployment rate, which has been noted by 63 per cent of those surveyed, and inflation (66 per cent). But what has apparently impressed the people the most is the absence of corruption in the higher levels, which was the single most important factor for the

Narendra Modi’s success is based on the image of being a man of development which has remained untainted by the depredations of the gau rakshaks and other Hindu fundamentalists. Manmohan Singh government’s downfall. At the all-India level, however, Modi holds almost complete sway, for none of the other parties has measured up to popular expectations. In all the appointments to the supposedly autonomous institu-

the Indian Council for Social Science Research. It is an open question whether these institutions will retain their high status once their terms end and not be deemed a “circus”, as the Nobel prize winner Venkatraman Ramakrishnan called the recent science congress. Demonetization, surgical strikes boost Modi’s image NEW DELHI: Stepping into its fourth year in power almost three months ago, the Narendra Modi government had been in a celebratory mood after the BJP’s stupendous electoral success in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, along with a modest pick-up in the economy and the imminent roll-out of the Goods and Services Tax across the nation in July. The government says the fiscal deficit, balance of payments deficit and inflation have all come down while the GDP growth rate, foreign exchange reserves and public capital investments have gone up. However, Opposition parties do not share the government’s enthusiasm on its performance in the last three years. They feel that all government claims about performance is rhetoric and it has
nothing to really show on the ground. Demonetization, a bold policy of “creative destruction” announced by Modi last November, did not dent the government’s image a bit, notwithstanding the long period of cashless days and the
long queues outside banks and ATMs. Rather it boosted Modi’s image as a leader with the masses, like the late Indira Gandhi enjoyed after bank nationalization in the 1970s. It is another matter whether demonetization will
achieve all that it had set out to — eliminate black money, corruption and fake currency — but politically the Prime Minister reaped electoral gains, at least in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The other major decisions were the surgical strikes the army said it had carried out last year on “terror pads” across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and the decision to approach the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague against the execution of alleged Indian spy Kulbushan Jadhav, sentenced to death by an army court in Pakistan. The cross-border military strikes were ordered by the government claiming that it would have a telling effect on the infrastructure and financial support given to terrorists by Pakistan. While it put the Congress party on the defen-
sive, critics have raised questions over their effect after a series of terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, including on the army camp in Uri. There is all-round concern over the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir which has spiralled out of control ever since the “poster boy” of militancy, Burhan Wani, was killed in a shootout by the security forces last summer. In agriculture, there is a looming crisis with farmers said to be committing suicide in some states after drought brought ruin on them. However, the government has ruled out a loan waiver scheme, though the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh announced a Rs 36,000 crore waiver within days of coming to power. Some other states have also announced such farmer-friendly measures. —IANS

Tales of India-Pakistan Partition goes public A portion of the oral history interviews has been released online in India and Pakistan IANS, NEW DELHI
A
collection of horrific and emotional tales of the Partition of India with over 4,300 witness interews was set to go public for the rst time this week. A portion of the complete oral story interviews will be released nline on August 10 from Stanford niversity Library’s Digital Reposory, US-based Guneeta Singh halla, founder of The 1947 Partion Archive, told IANS. Bhalla said the remaining collecon, deemed too delicate or sensive for open accessibility, would e available to researchers and terested parties only by visiting lect university libraries in collabation with the project, including shoka University, University of elhi and Guru Nanak Dev Unirsity in India; and Lahore Unirsity of Management Sciences nd Habib University in Pakistan. The archive contains more than 300 oral history interviews and ver 30,000 digital documents and hotographs, collected from 12 ountries in 22 languages, making the largest oral history archive on ny topic in South Asia, said the under of The 1947 Partition
Archive. It is among one of the largest video-based oral history archives in the world. The end goal is to record at least 10,000 oral history interviews from surviving witnesses. “We are excited to be releasing this work into the public domain so that it is accessible to all, giving each of us an opportunity to discover our rich history for ourselves,” Bhalla, 37, was quoted in an official statement as saying. Stanford University librarian Michael Keller said the project is tremendously important as part of the historical record and to make readily available for deeper discovery and research. The material is of particular

interest to Stanford as research efforts are underway at the Center for South Asia and the Handa Centre for Human Rights and International Justice. According to Bhalla, this archive
is the world’s first and the largest attempt at documenting the people’s history and memorializing partition. A pilot adoption of the collection into the three Indian university libraries is being sup-
ported by Tata Trusts. “The 1947 Partition Archives of oral histories is of particular interest in this 70th year of India’s Independence as time erases direct testimonies, so vital in firsthand authenticity,” Tata Trusts’ arts and culture head Deepika Sorabjee said. Historian Priya Satia of Stanford University said: “It’s important because for the last 70 years we have been telling the story of Partition through the lens of high-political negotiations among figures like Jinnah, Gandhi, Nehru, Mountbatten.”

Recreating the menu of India’s last night as a colony The night India got its independence, it was celebration time at the famed Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai with music, dance, speeches and the delicious food, reflecting the Indo-French cuisine BY MOHAMMED SHAFEEQ, HYDERABAD

onsomme al Indienne, Delicacies a l’Hindustan, Poularde souffle independence. These were some of the dishes on the dinner menu at The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, on August 14, 1947. The night when India ushered in its independence, it was celebration time at the famed five-star hotel with music, dance and speeches and, of course, the delicious food, reflecting the IndoFrench cuisine of those times. At Shamiana, the popular restaurant at the hotel, the menu of three courses was set to cabaret entertainment, albeit rationed as per government regulations at the time, say officials of the Taj Group of Hotels. The rationing conditions were applicable to all restaurants at that time and diners had to choose course combinations rather than feast on each choice. Dosabhai Framji Karaka also known as D.F. Karaka, an Indian newspaper editor and then owner of Current Weekly, addressed the guests, the officials said quoting from the book ‘The Taj at Apollo Bunder’. Seventy years later, Taj has recre-

ated the menu served on that memorable night. The group’s flagship hotels in Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolata besides Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, will take their guests back in time by serving the same dishes beginning this week and till Independence Day. The chefs have developed a menu which is in sync with
the culinary trends of that year. They had to go back and understand the essence of the recipes, and adapt it to current tastes using local ingredients and techniques. “We’ve retained the Indo-French touches not just in the dish names, but also in their foundations on the core French sauces and ingredients — albeit with a modern Indi-
an twist,” said a chef. Nitin Mathur, Executive Chef at Taj Krishna, Hyderabad, pointed out that since no photographs of the dishes were available, they used their imagination to match the menu. “As chefs we tried to recreate the whole thing by working on it. We used our imagination to match the menu,” Mathur told
IANS. There were a total of five combinations on the original menu, comprising a soup, a starter, two dishes in the main course and one dessert. Words like ‘al Indienne’, ‘a l’Hindustan’, ‘independence’ and ‘liberation’ were added in tune with the significance of the occasion. The starter comprises three flavored smoked cottage cheese steaks with mint chutney (Delicacies a lHindustan). The original main course comprised Paupiette de saumon joinville (Salmon roulade, soft creamy mash, wilted spinach, turned vegetables and joinville sauce) and Poularde souffle Independence (chicken souffle with steamed vegetables and lemon parsley sauce). The chef added two vegetarian choices — Crepes aux epinards (stuffed spinach crepes with makhani gravy) and Champignons Vol-au-Vents (truffle and wild mushroom, paprika cheese sauce). The Taj Mahal Palace has fixed Rs 1,947 as the price of this dinner (for one person).
Irony of history: From Angrez-mukt to Congress-mukt AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
O
n August 31, 1942, Lord Linlithgow wrote to Winston Churchill: “I am engaged here in meeting by far the most serious rebellion since that of 1857, the gravity and extent of which we have so far concealed from the world for reasons of military security.” It wasn’t until the beginning of the following year that the British were able to quell the uprising caused by the Congress’s call on August 9 to the British to quit India, but not before the colonial rulers had to use 57 battalions
against the rebels and the administration had broken down in large parts of Bihar and what is now eastern UP. The British blamed the Congress
for the violence, but one probable reason for the attacks on railway stations and the cutting of telegraph wires was the incarceration of virtually the entire Congress leader-
ship which left no one in the field to control and guide the mobs. Some historians have pointed out, however, that this wasn’t the first instance of the Congress’s absence from the battlefield which enabled its arch-opponent, the Muslim League, to gain ground. Moreover, the timing of the Quit India movement, which aimed at extracting a promise from the British to leave India at the end of World War II, has been questioned since it took place when the Allies were involved in a life-and-death struggle with the Axis powers. A relook at the events at the time of the Quit India movement
suggests that partition might have been avoided if the Congress had not been driven by the belief that there were only two forces in India at the time — the British and the Congress — and that there were no third parties such as the Muslim League. Besides, Jawaharlal Nehru had dismissed communalism as a “side issue”. Yet, arguably, much of the country’s ills stem from the partition. Domestically, the Hindu-Muslim problem hasn’t been solved. And, externally, India has acquired an inveterate enemy in Pakistan, whose publicly declared aim is to bleed India with a thousand cuts.

Prepare vision for 2022: Modi P IANS, NEW DELHI
rime Minister Narendra Modi this week asked District Collectors across India to prepare a vision document for their districts by August 15 to reflect 10-15 objectives which should be achieved by 2022, the 75th anniversary of country’s Independence. Addressing the district administrative heads across the country through video-conferencing on the theme “New India - Manthan”, Modi asked them to decide where they must see their districts in 2022 in terms of removal of deficiencies and improvement in services, an official release said. Noting the government is asking each individual, each family and each organization to aim for certain goals which they should accomplish by 2022, he asked the Collectors of 100 most backward districts to work in a mission mode and listen carefully to the poor who approach them with their grievances. The first-of-its-kind interaction with the Collectors was held on 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement with the aim of catalyz-

ing the “manthan” at the grassroots level. According to the statement, Modi asked the Collectors to seek help from colleagues, intellectuals of the district, and students of schools and colleges, to prepare a vision, or resolution document for their district before August 15.
No flying of aerial vehicles in Delhi till August 15
He said August 9 is intrinsically linked with the mantra of “Sankalp se Siddhi - Achievement through Resolve” and the date symbolizes the willpower and ambition of the youth. Citing how senior leaders of the freedom movement were arrested at the beginning of the Quit India Movement but youth across
the country successfully carried the movement forward, he said Collectors were not only representatives of the districts but also of the youth. “When youth assume a leadership role, goals are sure to be achieved,” Modi said adding that Collectors were fortunate as they have been given the opportunity to
dedicate themselves to the nation. The Prime Minister noted that some districts have always lagged in basic services such as electricity, water, education and when socioeconomic conditions improve, it would give a big boost to the overall development parameters of the country. Practices where good results have been achieved in districts should be replicated and scaled up, he said, adding that as he is doing the manthan with the collectors, they can do the same in the districts. Noting many schemes fail to have the desired impact many times just because people are not aware about them, he asked the Collectors to make people aware about the benefit of initiatives such as LED bulbs and BHIM App. He said that Clean India Campaign was dependent on a responsive administration and awareness among people and the real change can only come through public participation. Urging the Collectors to go out in the field more to understand ground realities, he said that the more a Collector visits the field, “the more active he will be on files”.
BSES’ Independence Day advisory on kite flying near power installations IANS, NEW DELHI
I The list of aerial platforms banned also includes para-motors, hanggliders, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Unmanned Aircraft Systems.
NEW DELHI: Flying of aerial vehicles like quadcopters, paragliders, and hot-air balloons in Delhi has been banned till the Independence Day celebrations on August 15 due to the terror threat, Delhi Police said this week. “... certain criminal/anti-social elements or terrorists... may pose a threat to the safety of the general public, dignitaries, and vital installa-
tions by the use of sub-conventional aerial platforms,” a police statement said. The list of aerial platforms banned also includes para-motors, hang-gliders, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Unmanned Aircraft Systems, microlight aircraft, remotelypiloted and small-powered aircraft, apart from parajumping from aircraft. — IANS
n view of the mass kite flying tradition on 70th Independence Day in the national capital, BSES, one of Delhi’s two electricity distribution companies (discoms), issued an advisory this week, cautioning people against flying kites near electrical installations as metal coated kite strings can cause trippings and electrocutions. In an “Independence Day advisory”, BSES said the widespread use of metal coated “manjha”, or kite string, “poses a great danger not only to the person flying the kite, but also poses a risk to the electricity supply of an area. Each year, there are several instances on both counts.” “Even though disrupting power supply and causing damage to power equipment is punishable under the Electricity Act and the Delhi Police Act, there seems to be little consideration shown for the law as well as power supply.” Noting that tripping of a single
Kite-flying has a historial significance on Independence Day and several people across age groups celebrate the freedom this way.
33/66 KV line can disrupt power supply to over 10,000 consumers, BSES said that areas under its jurisdiction in Delhi witnessed 28 instances of kite flying-related trippings last year. “Elders and parents are requested to inform and counsel children not to enter prohibited/barricaded electrical installations to retrieve kites because life is more precious
than a mere 10-20 rupee kite. Any carelessness can lead to a major power failure, blackout and even electrocutions,” the discom said in its advisory. It also said that residents’ welfare associations (RWAs) are being informed to caution members about the dangers of flying kites near electricity installations and using metal-coated “manjha”.

St Louis ISKCON marks chariot fete BY A STAFF WRITER T LOUIS, IL -- The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) chapter in St. Louis, Missouri celebrated the Chariot Festival for the third year in a row on July 30. As volunteers and devotees chanted the Hare Krishna Mantra (Hare Krishna Hare Krishna/ Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/Hare Rama Hare Rama/Rama Rama Hare Hare) at Tower Grove Park, hundreds of people gathered around the chariot cart or Rath carrying three majestic deities. They were Sri Jagannath, the Lord of the Universe, who has a black complexion, Subhadra Maharani, the younger sister of Sri Jagannath, who has a yellow complexion, and Sri Baladev, the elder brother of the other two personalities, who has a white complexion. These deities are replicas of the original humongous deities worshipped by sincere devotees in a famous temple in Jagannath Puri in Odisha, India where the deities are put onto three magnificent chariot carts and pulled by the devotees through the city from their main temple to another nearby temple. Through ISKCON, this festival is now being celebrated all over the world, and was
S
more recently celebrated in St. Louis, Missouri. Some 800 frenzied people grabbed the ropes of the rath and began to pull. With organizers in front of the crowd and on top of the cart controlling the speed and course of the chariot and communicating with the crowd through stop and slow signs, the chariot was pulled through the park without a glitch. The people in the crowd were all joyful and lively while enthusiastically dancing and singing. As the parade part of the festival came to close, the deities were moved from the chariot to an altar by the stage, and the public wandered through the various activity stalls and watched the stage programs. There was an enlightening address to
the crowd explaining the significance of the festival, a hilarious and engaging drama with a relatable lesson at the end, a fascinating drum performance by the outstanding youth of ISKCON, and an exquisite classical Indian dance performance that had the audience in awe. In the last event of the evening, the women from the ISKCON temple prepared more than 120 traditional Indian and American dishes and offered them to the deities on the altar before selling the prasadam to the public, and everything was sold out in 20 minutes. Everyone who attended this event left with an amazing experience, a new understanding, appreciation, and respect for Indian culture.

H-1B visas ‘beneficial’ for US and India
Gaurav Khanna
BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- A clampdown on the H-1B visa program will make it difficult for the US IT sector to attract open talent from countries like India, chances are, America might lose its competitive edge, a top American think-tank has said. The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise in specialized fields. As the Trump administration is carrying out a review of non-immigrant visas, the Center for Global Development (CGD) in a report said that the H-1B visa, the most sought after by Indian IT professionals, is beneficial for both India and the US. “It is really important to make sure that the IT sectors from both countries are allowed to attract the right kind of people, because they really allow for innovation and growth in both the countries,” said Gaurav Khanna, an Indian American post-doctoral fellow at the CGD and co-author of the research paper. The report, titled “The IT Boom and Other Unintended Consequences of Chasing the American Dream,” takes an in-depth look at how the H-1B visa program affects both the US and Indian economies. “Both the economies have really benefited from the H-1B program,” he opines. “What our paper is really trying to stress is that on average the US is better off because of the H-1B program. So, clamping down on the H-1B program will basically not allow the US.IT sector to attract the open talent from places like India. The US might then lose its competitive edge in IT production,” he warned, adding that IT companies might move to countries like Canada in the event of a large-scale clampdown on H-1B visas. Khanna said the research has shown that India has been a beneficiary of brain-gain, rather than brain drain due to the visa program. “If you think about what happens in India, you know the prospect of migrating to the US and earning such a high wage ...it seemed they really encouraged certain students and workers to acquire skills that would be valued by the H-1B program,” he said. The research, which examines the relationship between migration and the outsourcing of IT production to India since the early 2000s, found that US workers are, on average, better off by about $431 million or $1,345 per additional migrant in 2010 because of the H-1B program. The study incorporates crucial mechanisms like innovation by businesses, trade with other countries, and the choices made by students and workers to become computer scientists. While there are some negative impacts for a subset of US workers, the overall gains outweigh the losses as the combined incomes of the US and India both rise under the H-1B program by about $17.3 billion or 0.36 per cent. And total IT output from both nations rose steadily under the H-1B regime by about 0.45 per cent in 2010, the CGD research said. It also found out that better technology, as a by-product of this immigration of tech workers, increased the overall productivity of other sectors as well, and consumers of computer-related goods enjoyed better software and lower prices.

‘Beyond Bollywood’ by Heritage Museum
BY Dr. NILESH D. MEHTA HICAGO,IL - People from India, who have settled in the US, are no strangers to visiting and enjoying the museums. Bollywood in Chicago doesn’t seem too astonishing a thought, especially when India’s premier actor Aamir Khan chose the city as the location for his 2013 blockbuster film ‘Dhoom 3.’ Ironically, it was The Field Museum which was used in the backdrop of many shots of this movie. ‘Beyond Bollywood’, a very well-compiled project, is on display at this iconic museum through January 2018 in the Marae Gallery. Visitors will explore stories of Indian American experience coupled with vital political, professional, and cultural contributions to American history. Created by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, the exhibition moves past pop-culture stereotypes of Indian Americans to weave together stories of individual achievement and collective struggle. ‘Beyond Bollywood’ tells a uniquely American story while conveying the texture, vibrancy, and vitality of Indian American communities. Added to the Smithsonian’s exhibition are cherished artifacts lent by local families, such as musical instruments, religious objects, and inventions created by Chicagoland entrepreneurs. Another highlight is the Nobel Prize medal won by physicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, awarded for his pioneering work on the death of stars. ‘Beyond Bollywood’ committee co-Chairs Lakshmi Menon and Padma Rangaswamy have collectively put in marathon efforts which have now culminated in grand success for the Indian diaspora to enjoy and be proud of.

“This exhibition grows out of a longstanding relationship between our two institutions,” said Menon, the co-Chair of the Indo-American Heritage Museum’s ‘Beyond Bollywood’ committee. She added, “In augmenting the Smithsonian’s narrative of the national Indian American experience with the local Chicagoland story, we had the benefit of the Field Museum’s professional expertise and they were able to enhance their understanding of what matters to our community.” Rangaswamy observed, “Interpreting our community and culture to wider audiences is a very important part of our mission. We are delighted that the community got involved and supported us so enthusiastically in this effort. This exhibition not only helps Indian Americans learn more about their own heritage but also makes them feel they are an integral part of the city they call home.” One of the few good connections between the colonial British empire and India has been cricket. Ashutosh Gowarikar depicted the love of cricket among a group of Champaner villagers in India by his 2001 film ‘Lagaan’. Now, fast forward to 2017 and we have a ‘Lagaan’ rematch between South Barrington Cricket Club and The Fenders from New Zealand, England, and Australia on August 27 at 3 Tennis Club lane in South Barrington from
10 am to 4 pm. For those rare non-cricket lovers, the organizers have made alternative arrangements to enjoy kite-flying. Refreshments will be offered and parking will be provided free of cost. Speaking to ‘Hi India’, one of the senior cricketers of South Barrington Cricket Club, Dr. Kamlesh Amin, seemed to be genuinely excited not only about the prospects of the cricket match but also the platform provided by the concept of ‘Beyond Bollywood’. He said, “I am very proud of this museum and all of their activities. I urge our Indian supporters to come out to the museum in big numbers”. Amita Banerji is a trustee of the IndoAmerican Heritage Museum and is quite passionate about her work. While speaking to ‘Hi India’, besides the excitement of ‘Beyond Bollywood’, she noted, “Growing up in India, cricket was the most popular sport. In fact, people in India are crazy about cricket. As Indian Americans, we have brought this love for cricket to America. As we build lives in our new country we try to replicate our longing for what was familiar.” This effort of ‘Beyond Bollywood’ is very commendable and there is no doubt that ‘Hi India’ readers would make a trip to The Field Museum and respect the hard work put together by the organizers.

8-year-old transgender drags school to court
BY A STAFF WRITER ORBA LINDA, CA -- Parents of an eight-year-old transgender Indian American girl are suing a school alleging that its administrators discriminated against their daughter by forcing her to dress and identify as a boy. According to the lawsuit filed on August 2 in Orange County, Calif., Superior Court, Nikki Brar told her parents just before she turned seven that though she was assigned to the male gender at birth, her true identity is that of a girl. “Mumma, I’m a girl. I want to be called a girl,” Nikki told her mother in June 2016. She later told her whole family that she had felt like a girl for a very long time. Nikki, who was named Nikash at birth, had always shown a preference for toys and clothing associated with girls. She would wear her mother’s high-heeled shoes, polish her toe-nails, and make gowns out of her grandmother’s dupattas. Shah and her husband Jaspret Brar, along with their older daughter, supported Nikki’s decision. But at Heritage Oak School, teachers and administrators allegedly refused to use the name Nikki, continuing to call the youngster Nikash, and identifying her as ‘he.’ The school also required Nikki to wear the boys’ uniform–shorts instead of a skirt– and to use the boys’ restroom. The school

did offer to let Nikki use the staff bathroom, but only if she dressed like a boy. The lawsuit alleges that Nikki experienced social isolation: the girls would not play with her because she had to dress like a boy, and she found the boys’ games too rough. Boys would bully the youngster, calling her ‘a loser.’ The lawsuit alleges that administrators at Heritage Oak told Nikki’s parents that
the school is a ‘conservative institution,’ which focuses on ‘character education.’ Allowing Nikki to transition her gender at the school would ‘create an imbalance in our environment,’ administrators allegedly told parents. The lawsuit claims that Heritage Oak has violated the Civil Rights Act, a California state law that bans a variety of discrimination.
2 supermassive black holes discovered BY A STAFF WRITER A S H I N G TO N , D C - Astronomers at The University of New Mexico (UNM) have discovered the existence of orbiting supermassive black holes. A university news release said the discovery of the two black holes, located hundreds of millions of light years from our planet, was more than a decade in the making. Karishma Bansal, a graduate student at the university’s physics and astronomy department, was the lead author on the paper published in the Astrophysical Journal. The Indian American student and Prof. Greg Taylor, along with colleagues at Stanford, the US Naval Observatory and the Gemini Observatory, have been studying the interaction between the two black holes for a dozen years. In early 2016, an international team of researchers, including a UNM alumnus, detected the existence of gravitational waves, confirming Albert Einstein’s 100-year-old prediction, and astonishing the scientific

community. These gravitational waves were the result two stellar mass black holes colliding in space within the Hubble time. Bansal said that the black holes have a combined mass of 15 billion times that of
the sun. The unbelievable size of these black holes means their orbital period is around 24,000 years. Bansal and Taylor said that the research could also teach us a lot about the universe, where galaxies come from and where they’re going.
Convict’s plea in fatal assault case rejected BY A STAFF WRITER LD BRIDGE, NJ -- A New Jersey man serving a 12-year sentence in the 2010 beating death of Indian American computer scientist Divyendu Sinha has lost his appeal in a New Jersey Appellate Court. Five youths were convicted and sentenced in the case. Steven Contreras, the driver of the car that took the four teenagers to the scene of the crime, was sentenced to 12 years. He appealed for reprieve on grounds the sentence was too harsh and that he should have been allowed to withdraw his guilty plea. The appellate court rejected his appeal on August 7, saying the convict’s arguments “are without sufficient merit to warrant discussion.”

BY A STAFF WRITER ANSAS CITY, KS -- A Kansas woman is alleging in a lawsuit that Indian American pathologist Dr. Meenakshi Singh misdiagnosed her of having a cancerous pancreatic tumor that led doctors to unnecessarily remove parts of her organs and then cover up the wrong diagnosis. The lawsuit filed this week by Wendy Ann Noon Berner, 46, of Shawnee, accuses the University of Kansas Hospital and the now-former chairwoman of the pathology department, of fraud, negligence and civil conspiracy. Berner said she learnt about it only when a doctor at the hospital filed a whistleblower lawsuit over her case. The lawsuit accuses Singh of making the misdiagnosis and then attempting to cover up the mistake. Singh remains on staff but is no longer chairwoman of the pathology department. Singh and Dr. Timothy Schmitt, who performed Berner’s surgery, are named as defendants, along with the hospital, the University of Kansas Medical Center and the University of Kansas Physicians, which employs physicians who practise at the medical center. Berner was allegedly misdiagnosed as having a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor, which turns fatal within five years in most cases. In September 2015, she underwent a surgery to remove part of the pancreas and some other body parts. Berner’s misdiagnosis was detected after the surgery when other members of the hospital’s pathology department examined tissue samples from her pancreas and concluded that the organ was not cancerous.

S
chool-children tied rakhis on wrists of President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Raksha Bandhan as the festival marking affection between brothers and sisters was celebrated across the country with traditional enthusiasm and gaiety. Women and children from various segments of society visited Modi at his residence and tied rakhis on his wrist. Among them were Sharbati Devi, a 103-year-old widow who lost her brother about 50 years ago and Pakistani-origin Qamar Mohsin Shaikh, who has been tying rakhi to Modi for the past 23 years. Sharbati Devi had been missing her brother, specially on Rakhi, and her son wrote to Modi who invited the family to his residence on Raksha Bandhan. Shaikh, who has been living in India for the past 35 years, travelled from Ahmedabad to tie the thread of sibling bonding on Modi’s wrist. “I have been tying rakhi to Narendra Bhai for the last 23 years. I am extremely excited to be able to do it this time too,” Shaikh,
who came to India from Pakistan after her marriage, told a news channel. She got a call two days back from Modi and started preparing for Raksha Bandhan. Shaikh said Modi spent a few seconds with each visitor who had come to greet him and tie rakhi, but “I was surprised and extremely happy that he spent more time with me”. Schoolchildren and members of the Koli community tied rakhis on the wrist of President Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Children, attired in colorful traditional outfits as also in school uniform, greeted the President along with a delegation of 116 women and 27 men, representing the Gujarat Koli Samaj. Bollywood celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Manoj Bajpayee and Farah Khan wished their siblings and fans a year full of love and happiness on the occasion. In Delhi, the occasion was observed with traditional fervour along with feasts and exchange of gifts. Delhi Transport Corporation offered free rides to women from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., while Delhi Metro
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the 103-year-old widow Sharabati Devi at his residence and held Rakhi from her. (Photo: Twitter) ran additional trains to meet the demand on the festival day. Heavy rains that lashed the city could not dampen the festive spirit and decked up shops could be seen selling rakhis, henna, bangles and sweets. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal celebrated the festival with school girls and a group of Brahma Kumaris who tied rakhis on his wrist. In Punjab, women and girls from across the state, dressed in traditional, colorful attires, converged at the Attari check post along the international border with Pakistan and tied rakhis to the Border Security Force officers and
troopers. In Patna, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi on Monday tied rakhis to trees here and urged people to protect the state’s green cover. Clad in his usual white cotton kurta-pyjama, Nitish Kumar said: “It is a symbolism to protect trees to increase the green cover. It is important for the environment.” In Hyderabad, Telangana’s Industry and Information Technology Minister K.T. Rama Rao received ‘rakhi’ and a helmet as gift from his sister and Parliament member K. Kavitha. Kavitha, MP and daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K.
Chandrasekhar Rao, through her social media campaigns ‘Sisters4Change’ and ‘GiftAHelmet’, had appealed to all sisters to gift a helmet on Rakhsha Bandhan for their brothers’ safety. Voicing concern over death of 400 people in two-wheeler accidents every day across the country, Kavitha said it was because the riders don’t wear helmets. Truebil, a verified virtual marketplace for pre-owned cars, unveiled a new digital film, #SafetyKiRakhi. The 3.07 minute long film highlights the importance of wearing a seat belt to the journey safe while also strengthening the brother-sister bond.

Pt. Dhananjay Kaul wows music lovers
BY A STAFF WRITER TLANTA, GA -- Pandit Dhananjay Kaul, the Sufiana maestro from India, performed to a standing ovation from the music lovers at a recent concert at the Impact Center of Global Mall in metro Atlanta! The July 16 dinner-music charity concert was a well-organized feast to benefit plans for construction of a replica of Kheer Bhawani USA temple in Atlanta. Tej Kaul of Kashmir Overseas Association (KOA), an architect by profession, explained the efforts under way for planning and design of the Kheer Bhawani USA temple within the 11.4-acre premises of Shiv Mandir Atlanta in the northeast corridor of Metro Atlanta. Kashmir’s Kheer Bhawani is the most venerated temple dedicated for Maa Ragnya Bhagwati (another form of Durga) at the holy spring in Tula Mula about 15 miles from Srinagar. The spotlight for the evening nevertheless was on Pt. Dhananjay Kaul of India as the stage with backdrop and decorations typical of Kashmir was set for his florid vocalism. Recipient of numerous State and National awards, Dhananjay’s gayaki (singing) is cast in devotional mould and his voice is full-throated and bold with beautiful tapestry of Swaras and Shrutis. The Pandit invoked Lord Shiva with the classical bhajan (devotional) recital by a Sanskrit stotra in raag/raga Bhairav with his nifty fingers

controlling the keys of his harmonium with a slow melody. His second striking melody, the Kashmiri sufi kalam (song) “Roz roz”, set a lighthearted tone to the raga. Pt. Dhananjay also enthralled the audience with the compositions of singer Mehdi Hasan, including the ghazal of Ahmed Faraz, “Ranjis hi Sahi” in raag Yamen followed by “Zindagi mei to pyar” in raag Bhimpalasi. He shifted to Hindustani classical, singing a nostalgic thumri of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan in raag Kaushik dhuni. The crescendo heightened when Dhananjay sang Punjabi sufi kalams. The audiences broke
into spontaneous dance and ovation for his Punjabi/Patiala gharana beats. He continued entertaining with the famous Kashmiri Sufi kalam of great Saint Ahad Zargar, “Na chum tan pan” in raga Bilawal. As requested by Jyoti Ganju (one of the organizers of the concert), his final song for the evening was a patient, minimalist lyrical rendition of Kashmiri sufi kalam by great Saint Niyma Saeb, “Che gaste hai” in raag Khamaj. The charity concert, which sold out with an attendance of over 200 expatriates, raised over $20,000 (total collections so far) for the Kheer Bhawani USA Temple Fund.
Bikers attack two cars in Middlesex county BY A STAFF WRITER ALLOWAY, NJ -- A family from Galloway Township, New Jersey, was reportedly attacked by bikers in what appears to be a racially-motivated attack on the road in the middle of the night on August 6. Mohammad Ghazanfar was returning home from John F. Kennedy International Airport when the two cars he and his extended family were in, were attacked by bikers who broke the windows and shouted epithets and identified them as ‘Indians.’ The alleged attack took place in Middlesex County shortly after the family departed from a Wawa convenience store on King George’s Road in Woodbridge
G
Township. Ghazanfar was in the car in the front with his wife; his sister, her husband and their kids were in the car behind. Soon after midnight, the two-car convoy stopped at a red light and Ghazanfar saw in his rear view mirror that his sister’s car was being attacked.
It was not known whether Ghazanfar’s family members were Indians, IndianAmericans or of other South Asian heritage. “They’re yelling, cursing, kicking the car and all I see in the mirror, and then I see it’s my sister’s car,” Mohammad is quoted saying. When he got out to find out what was happening, “This guy comes around from the other side, he swings at me, he punches me in my face, then he started cursing saying, you know the f-word, ‘you effing Indian,’ this and that,” Ghazanfar is quoted saying in a CBS NewYork report. Windows on both cars were smashed and Ghazanfar had ‘a couple of cuts’ on his face.

In receiving the award, Dr Hariawala, a Harvard-trained surgeon, took the opportunity to push the “$100 Billion Medical Tourism” opportunity for India, the ‘Deccan Chronicle’ reported. He said that long waiting periods for medical procedures will compel millions of impatient Americans to seek elective surgical procedures outside the US for around 10 percent of the cost, and India could be the most sought-after global destination. Hariawala was all praise for the talent of healthcare workers--doctors, nurses, infrastructure, etc--in India, saying that marketing of services and lobbying with US insurance companies could be crucial in securing a firm conduit that would maintain flow of patients consistently. Beware of food allergy! Food allergy, which results in a harmless skin rash to potentially lethal anaphylactic shock, affects nearly 4 to 6% of children and 4 % of adults RACHEL V. THOMAS, NEW DELHI
A
13-year-old Indian-origin boy in London died last month after suffering a severe allergic reaction to a piece of cheese. According to media reports, Karanbir Cheema was allergic to wheat, gluten and dairy and his condition was well known at school but he came in contact with the allergen in cheese as it was allegedly forced on him by a schoolmate. Food allergy, which can cause symptoms ranging from a harmless skin rash to a potentially lethal anaphylactic shock, are estimated to affect four to six per cent of children and four per cent of adults, as the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests. If left untreated, a food allergy can turn fatal, especially in children, because the body’s immune system considers the proteins and

complex carbohydrates present in the food as foreign. “It is only in rare cases that one can get a severe allergic response to any food allergen. Food items like cheese have other ingredients which may have caused severe aller-
gic reaction. Commonly mild allergy, however, does not cause such severe reactions,” Vivek Raj, Director (Gastroenterology), Max Super Speciality Hospital, told IANS. As per the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there are
eight foods common for allergic reactions in a large segment of the sensitive population. These include peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, milk, shellfish, fish, wheat and their derivatives, soy and their derivatives, and sulphites (chemical-based, often found in flavors and colors in foods) at 10 parts per million (ppm) and over. These can cause several types of allergies such as skin manifestations which include rashes, swelling and itching, respiratory symptoms including wheezing, bronchospasm and choking and gastrointestinal symptoms including cramping, vomiting and diarrhea. Some also cause low blood pressure which shows as light-headedness, dizziness or a fainting spell. Allergy to any food item may cause bronchial secretions, which can lead to bronchospasm — a sudden constriction of the muscles in the walls of the bronchioles in the respiratory tract.

ciated with Alzheimer’s disease. Diabetes or high blood pressure, also called hypertension, increased the chances of developing dementia. Importantly, diabetes was found to be almost as strong a predictor of dementia as the presence of the APOE4 gene, the researchers said. “Our results contribute to a growing body of evidence linking midlife vascular health to dementia,” said Rebecca Gottesman, Professor at the Johns Hopkins Uni-
versity in Baltimore, US. However, “these are modifiable risk factors. Our hope is that by addressing these types of factors early, people can reduce the chances that they will suffer from dementia
later in life,” Gottesman added. Also, the researchers discovered a link between dementia and prehypertension — where blood pressure levels are higher than normal but lower than hypertension.

The study, published in the journal Lancet Global Health, showed that in 2015 an estimated 36 million people were blind, 217 million were moderately or severely vision impaired, and 188 million had mild vision impairment. 35 years or older. Most of the blind people live in South Asia (11.7 million, 80 per cent), followed by East Asia (6.2 million) and Southeast Asia (3.5 million). Some parts of sub-Saharan Africa also have particularly high rates. “There is an ongoing reduction in the age-standardized prevalence of blindness and visual impairment, yet the growth and aging of the world’s population is causing a substantial increase in number of people affected,” said Rupert Bourne, Professor at the Anglia Ruskin University in the UK. Further, there are more than 200 million people with moderate to
severe vision impairment, which is expected to rise to more than 550 million by 2050. For the study, the team estimated trends in prevalence of vision impairment and their uncertainties, by sex, for 188 countries in the 21 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) regions, from 1990 to 2015. “Even mild visual impairment can significantly impact a person’s life. For example, reducing their independence... as it often means people are barred from driving,” Bourne was quoted as telling the BBC. Visual impairment also limits people’s educational and economic opportunities, Bourne added.

The study that tested early time-restricted feeding (eTRF) on humans found that this meal-timing strategy reduced swings in hunger and altered fat and carbohydrateburning patterns, which may help with losing weight. With eTRF, people eat their last meal by the mid-afternoon and do not eat again until breakfast the next morning. “Eating only during a much smaller window of time than people are typically used to, may help with weight loss,” said one of the
researchers Courtney Peterson, Associate Professor at University of Alabama at Birmingham in the US. The human body has an internal clock, and many aspects of metabolism are at their optimal functioning
High-fiber cuts gout inflammation NEW YORK: Consuming a high-fiber diet may significantly induce the action of gut bacteria to help reduce inflammation associated with the gout and possibly help the treatment of arthritis, researchers have found. Gout is a metabolic disease in which monosodium urate crystals of uric acid — a waste product in the blood — form in the body’s tissues or joints, causing inflammation and pain. The study found that the action of gut bacteria, influenced by different
Salt treatment to kill airborne virus
types of food, can affect inflammation in the body. Diets that are high in fiber trigger bacteria in the gut to produce short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which induce neutrophil apoptosis and the resolution of inflammation. The findings may have important implications for the treatment of gout, and possibly for the treatment of arthritis, the researchers said. They added what we eat plays a determinant role in our capacity to fine tune the inflammatory response.
in the morning. Therefore, eating in alignment with the body’s circadian clock by eating earlier in the day may positively influence health. Previous animal studies showed
that early time-restricted feeding helped rodents burn more fat. During the current study, Peterson and her colleagues followed a small group of men and women with excess weight over four days of eating between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., and four days of eating between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Participants tried both eating schedules, ate the same number of calories both times and completed all testing under supervision. Researchers found that, although eTRF did not affect how many total calories participants burned, it reduced daily hunger swings and increased fat burning during several hours at night. It also improved metabolic flexibility, which is the body’s ability to switch between burning carbohydrates and burning fats.
Dialysis patients risk early death IANS, LONDON
K
idney failure patients on dialysis tend to have altered blood clots which increases their risk of dying prematurely, especially from cardiovascular causes, according to a study. The study found that these patients tended to have a denser clot structure than individuals without kidney disease. Their blood has altered coagulation properties, which increases their
risk of both bleeding and thrombotic events such as stroke, as well as an increased risk of dying from other causes, the researchers said. In addition, analysing the blood of 171 chronic hemodialysis patients, the team found that dialysis patients’ fibrinogen — a protein that is converted into fibrin during blood clot formation — exhibited certain modifications that were different from fibrinogen from the patients without any kidney disease.
“Whether better dialysis treatment or medication could improve clot structure needs to be investigated in future studies,” said Katharina Schutt from RWTH Aachen University in Germany.
Focus on vegetables, fruits in winters: Dieticians IANS, NEW DELHI
W
TORONTO: Researchers have developed a special salt treatment that can make common surgical masks capable of trapping and killing airborne viruses. “Surgical masks were originally designed to protect the wearer from infectious droplets in clinical settings, but it does not help much to prevent the spread of respiratory diseases such as SARS or MERS or influenza,” said Hyo-Jick Choi, Professor, University of Alberta, Canada.
LONDON: Consuming foods such as bananas, potatoes, grains and legumes that are rich in resistant starch may help check blood sugar, enhance satiety as well as improve gut health, a study has found. Resistant starch is a form of starch that is not digested in the small intestine and is therefore considered a type of dietary fibre. “We know that adequate fibre intake — at least 30 grams per day — is important for achieving a healthy, balanced diet, which reduces the risk of developing a range of chronic diseases,” said Stacey Lockyer, Nutrition Scientist at British Nutrition Foundation, a Britain-based charity. —IANS
ith winter being the best time to increase food intake, dieticians have urged children to focus more on fruits and vegetables to supplement body nutrition, which is hardly the case during summer. According to them, the increased intake of walnuts can be extremely helpful for dementia patients. Vitamin A is necessary for eyesight and carrot has plenty of it. “Carrot also enhances blood flow to the eyes to aid in better functioning,” said Nidhi Dhawan, dietician at city-based Saroj Super Specialty Hospital. “The connection between celery and bones is quite common. Celery
Having more fruits and vegetables in winters prevent children from diseases.
helps people with deprived sodium in their bones, replenishing the sodium needs. Avocados are one of them too - they take exactly nine
months to ripen and are helpful in targeting health and functioning of uterus and cervix. They help women to balance hormones, shed
unwanted birth weight, and deter cervical cancers,” said Dhawan. Quoting established researches, Dhawan said that tomatoes are essential for pure heart and blood. “Kidney beans as the name suggests is helpful in healing and maintaining kidney functioning,” said Anuradha Lalwani, dietician with Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. “Fruits are also must for women and their development includes avocado, olives and all citrus fruits. Olives assist in the health and functioning of ovaries. Citrus fruits like orange and grapefruit help with the movement of the lymph in and out of the breasts and resemble the shape of mammary glands in females,” said Lalwani.
