efense, agriculture, trade, diplomacy and water management dominated talks during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel — the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the Jewish homeland. Here are five things that define the India-Israel relationship today: Defense: India is Israel’s top destination for arms exports, buying 41 per cent of export between 2012 and 2016, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, an independent global conflict and arms-research institute. Israel is India’s third-largest source of arms, with a 7.2 per cent share of imports between 2012 and 2016, next to the US (14 per cent) and Russia (68 per cent). The earliest signs of collaboration came during the 1962 Sino-Indian war, when Israel provided India military aid. Israel also assisted India during two wars with Pakistan in 1965 and 1971. India reciprocated during the sixday war in 1967 by providing Israel with spare parts for French-made Mystere and Ouragan aircraft as well as AX-13 tanks (also French-made). The highlight of the partnership was Israel’s supply of artillery shells

during the Kargil war in 1999 when India faced a shortage. In the late 1990s, a crucial defense deal was the Indian purchase of Barak 1, an air-defense missile, bought specifically for its capability to intercept US-made Harpoon missiles deployed by Pakistan. Diplomacy: Several ministerial and high-level official visits to Israel preceded Modi’s tour. These included visits by then Home Minister L.K.

Advani in 2000, former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in 2008, Home Minister Rajnath Singh in 2014, President Pranab Mukherjee in 2015 and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in 2016. Three Indian naval ships, destroyer INS Mumbai, frigate INS Trishul and tanker INS Aditya, made a goodwill visit at the Haifa port in May 2017 to mark 25 years of full diplomatic relations between

the two countries. Agriculture: An Indo-Israel agriculture action plan for 2015-18 is operational, and 15 of the proposed 26 centres of excellence in agriculture are being developed in India with Israel’s help to showcase the latest technology to Indian farmers. Phase-I (2010-12) and phase-II (2012-15) of the agreement are complete, according to a reply to the Lok Sabha.

FIREWORKS, PARADES MARK US I-DAY President Donald Trump kicked off the celebrations tweeting a video of a chorus singing ‘Make America Great Again;’ Vice President Mike Pence attends the Fourth of July Parade IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he US celebrated its 241st birthday with flashy fireworks displays, eating competitions, parades and readings of the Declaration of Independence. President Donald Trump helped kick off the Independence Day celebrations on July 4th morning, tweeting out a video of a chorus singing the song ‘Make America Great Again’, backed by a massive American flag. He later tweeted: “Getting ready to celebrate the 4th of July with a big crowd at the White House. Happy 4th to everyone. Our country will grow and prosper!” To mark the day, US senators traveled to Afghanistan and spent the holiday with the troops, reports said. Across the country, Americans shared their July 4 celebrations on

Facebook, from the hikers in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains to Vermont’s largest Independence Day parade in Bristol, to the hot dog eaters in Louisville, the beachgoers in the Californian sun and fishing

trips in Florida, USA Today reported. Vice President Mike Pence made a special trip to Grandville, Michigan, for the Fourth of July Parade while on vacation with his family in Northern Indiana.

Trump, Putin to hold bilateral meet IANS, WASHINGTON

U WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has slammed Kim Jong-un in response to North Korea’s latest ballistic missile launch and warned him that South Korea and Japan’s patience is running out. “North Korea has just launched another missile. Does this guy have anything better to do with his life?” Trump tweeted. “Hard to believe that South Korea and Japan will put up with this much longer. Perhaps China will put a heavy move on North Korea and end this nonsense once and for all!” he added. Earlier on July 4, North Korea launched a new ballistic missile test, firing at least one missile that fell into the Sea of Japan, also called the East Sea, a spokesperson for the South Korean Ministry of National Defense told Efe news. The launch was conducted near the Panghyon air base, where the North Korean military fired the Pukguksong-2 missile, also known as KN-15 with an estimated range of about 3,000 km, for the first time on February 12. —IANS

Pence, alongside Michigan Governor Rick Snyder and Representative Bill Huizenga walked at the front of the parade and individually greeted citizens lining the parade route. Along with the fireworks,

S President Donald Trump will hold an official bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, the White House confirmed on July 4. Citing remarks by US National Security Council spokesman Michael Anton, CNN reported that the first in-person meeting between Trump and Putin and the first official US-Russian bilateral meeting in almost two years will occur on July 7. However, the exact agenda for the bilateral meeting had yet to be set.

Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders will come as the US and Russia hold differences on a slew of issues, including

the Syrian conflict, the Ukrainian crisis and the alleged Russian meddling in the US presidential election. In April, Trump said the US was “not getting along with Russia at all” and the relations between the two countries “may be at an alltime low.” Meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Washington in mid-May, Trump expressed his desire to build a better relationship between the two countries. Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the US is working to stabilize its relationship with Russia, which is “at an all-time low.”

July Fourth also came with some light-hearted traditions like competitive eating contests. Thousands upon thousands of fireworks turned the night sky over New York City into a festival of color during the annual Macy’s fireworks show. Crowds lined up along the East River to watch. Throngs of people were dressed in colors of the American flag and witnessed the show for which 60,000 firework rockets were used. Fireworks, launched from five boats on the East River at 9.30 p.m, displayed images such as smiley faces, bicolor spheres and huge golden palm trees to the cheerful and applauding crowd. About three million people attended the New York fireworks show amid tight security, although police chief James O’Neill said there were no specific or credible threats against the celebrations or the city.

Barack Obama touts Paris accord SEOUL: Former US President Barack Obama championed global leaders’ commitment to the Paris Agreement despite Washington’s withdrawal from the accord, the media reported. “The Paris agreement, even with the temporary absence of US leadership, will still be a critical factor in helping our children solve the enormous challenge in civilisation,” Obama said at a Seoul conference organized by South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo media group. — IANS

US President Donald Trump arrives in Poland IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump arrived in Poland on July 6 on his first bilateral visit to a European country. The US leader and First Lady Melania Trump touched down aboard Air Force One at the Warsaw airport on July 5 night at 10.15 p.m. (local time) for a visit scheduled to last less than 24 hours, Efe news reported. On July 6 afternoon, Trump was scheduled to fly to Hamburg, Germany, to participate in the G20

summit, where he is also expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump's agenda in Warsaw — amid heavy security — will start with the meeting with his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda at the presidential palace, to be followed by a brief appearance before the media, and later, the pair will participate in an economic meeting with 12 heads of government from Central and Eastern European nations. At the meeting, Trump was to propose to the participating countries that they import US liquefied

natural gas, arguing that they can thus reduce their energy dependence on Russia. Poland favors the idea because it aspires to transform itself — with US investment — into a logistical centre for LNG in Eastern Europe, a point on which it is at odds with Germany, by building a

port for such shipments on its northern coast. Trump was then to deliver a speech on the capital's Krasinski Square, where the monument to the uprising of city residents against the Nazi occupation stands, a symbol of Poland's fight for independence.

Border row: China raises decibel India has urged Beijing ‘not to change the status quo unilaterally’ in the border region

‘Willing to discuss alternative arrangements for Indian yatris’

IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he Chinese Embassy on Thursday described India’s claim of Doklam region belonging to Bhutan as “groundless” and said that for any meaningful dialogue Indian troops must pull back from the area “unconditionally and immediately”. Li Ya, Political Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy, in a video message said, “On June 18, Indian border troops crossed the Sikkim section of the China-India boundary triggering a close range face-off.” He said the Sikkim sector is “delimited” by the 1890 SinoBritain convention relating to Tibet and Sikkim. “In essence, China’s territorial sovereignty has been undermined by the Indian border troops,” the Chinese official said, repeating the accusations levelled by the Chinese Foreign Ministry in Beijing. The Chinese political counsellor said that following the face-off the Indian side has claimed that Doklam belongs to Bhutan and that

BRIEFS India, US, Japan to kick off naval exercise CHENNAI: Warships, submarines, aircraft and personnel from India, Japan and the US are to participate in the Malabar exercise in the Bay of Bengal from July 7-17, amid reports of the presence of Chinese warships in the Indian Ocean. Malabar 2017 is the latest in a continuing series of exercises that has grown in scope and complexity over the years to address the variety of shared threats to maritime security in the Indo-Asia Pacific, a US embassy statement said.

GST roll-out smoother than anticipated: Jaitley MUMBAI: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday said that despite the anticipation of initial disruptions on account of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the rollout of the new indirect tax regime from July 1 was smooth and without any significant glitches. “When GST was implemented from July 1, it was anticipated that huge amount of disruptions would be caused. We in the government were factoring it. But the switchover was smooth. We didn’t see any significant disruption due to GST roll-out,” Jaitley said through e-conferencing from New Delhi. —IANS

NEW DELHI: China on Wednesday said that it was forced to halt the entry of Indian pilgrims to Kailash Mansarovar through the Nathu La pass after Indian troops “crossed into Chinese territory” and that it is willing to discuss the possibility of alternative arrangements through other routes for Indian yatris. In a statement, Chinese Embassy spokesperson Xie Liyan said the Indi-

an yatra to Kailash and Mansarovar is an important part of China-India people-to-people and cultural exchanges. “China consistently respects the Indian people’s religious sentiments and attaches importance to Indian Yatra to Kailash and Mansarovar in Xizang. “We are willing to discuss the possibility of alternative arrangements,” he said.

Defense Minister Arun Jaitley

China “changed the status quo” of the area and New Delhi cited its security concern. He said India has given “three major arguments to justify its trespassing into Chinese territory”. Li, who claimed that he has firsthand knowledge of the area, said that based on his knowledge and work “for the past decade” India’s “position is groundless”. “As far as the solution is con-

cerned, the Indian border troops must pull back to the Indian side of the boundary unconditionally and immediately. That is the precondition for any meaningful dialogue between China and India,” Li added. India last week said it had told China that the building of a road by Chinese troops in a border region will have “serious security implications for India”.

After China reportedly asked New Delhi to learn from its 1962 military debacle, Defense Minister Arun Jaitley said last week that the India of 2017 is different from the India of 1962. “If they are trying to remind us, the situation in 1962 was different, the India of today is different,” Jaitley said at India Today’s Midnight Conclave in response to the reported remark by the People’s Liberation Army spokesperson.

Xi, Modi unlikely to meet at G20 BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are unlikely to meet on the sidelines of the G20 summit, with Beijing saying on Thursday that “the atmosphere is not right” due to their border stand-off. The two leaders were expected to meet at the Hamburg summit in a bid to resolve the simmering border dispute in the mountainous Sikkim sector. “The atmosphere is not right for a bilateral meeting between President Xi and Prime Minister Modi,” a Chinese Foreign Ministry official said. The Foreign Ministry made it more evident by saying that the “trespass” by Indian troops into Chinese territory had damaged the political foundations of bilateral relations between China and India. —IANS

Life limping back to normalcy in Bengal IANS, KOLKATA

ife in the communal violence-hit areas of West Bengal’s north 24 Parganas district was on Thursday limping back to normalcy after remaining tense for the last three days. In Baduria, Banstala and Tetulia — the worst affected areas in Basirhat sub-division, some roadside shops opened and public transport commenced plying. The roads were mostly deserted

and the few locals who came out on the road said they wanted peace to be restored in the affected areas. “We all want peace to be restored. People of all communities have been staying together for ages here. We want things to be that way,” a pedestrian said while talking to a news channel. “No fresh incidents of violence have been reported from the region. housands of Tibetans on Thursday morning joined in the 82nd birthday celebrations of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama here. On this occasion, the Tibetan cabinet urged US President Donald Trump to initiate steps to restart dialogue on Tibet’s future. Large crowds donning traditional dresses began to assemble since

morning at the Shiwatsel Phodrang complex on the city’s outskirts for the birthday celebrations. “Special prayer sessions were held for the long life of His Holiness,” a Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) spokesperson told IANS. The Dalai Lama, revered by the Tibetans as a “living god”, attended the prayers and blessed the gathering. Tibetan Prime Minister Lobsang Sangay also attended the celebrations, while his cabinet

Train services on the SealdahBasirhat line also normalized after being partially disrupted for the past two days. “We also urge President Trump to support the middle-way approach and dialogue between the envoys of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the representatives of the Chinese government,” said the cabinet in a statement. Expressing gratitude to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson for his support for dialogue, it said: “We also thank Terry Branstad, the US Ambassador to China, for calling on China to provide meaningful autonomy for Tibetans.” The cabinet reiterated its commitment to “middle-way” approach as the mutually beneficial solution to resolving the longstanding issue of Tibet.

I FOR I = ISRAEL FOR INDIA... ...and vice versa. Israel is India’s third-largest source of arms, with a 7.2 per cent share of imports between 2012 and 2016, next to the US and Russia

CHAITANYA MALLAPUR, MUMBAI

D

efense, agriculture, trade, diplomacy and water management dominated talks during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel — the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the Jewish homeland.

India has benefited from Israeli technologies in horticulture mechanization, protected cultivation, orchard, canopy management, nursery management, micro-irrigation and post-harvest management, specially in Haryana and Maharashtra. Every year, more than 20,000 farmers visit the Agricultural Centre of Excellence at Gharaunda in Karnal, Haryana, where a nursery produces hybrid seedlings — including tomatoes, cherry-tomato, colored capsicum, cucumbers, eggplant and chilli pepper-grown in small, individual cells, ready to be transplanted into containers or a field. Water Management: On June 28, 2017, the Union cabinet approved a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Israel on the National Campaign for Water Conservation in India. Technologically-adept Israel has developed water-management technologies, located as it is in a semiarid region with limited sources of fresh drinking water. Trade: Israel was India’s 38th-largest trading partner, with trade of $5.02 billion in 2016-17, down 18 per cent over 2012-13. The trade balance stood in India’s favor at $1.10 billion in 2016-17. Mineral fuels and oils are India’s leading export to Israel, worth $1.01 billion in 2016-17.

GST shadow on world’s largest community kitchen With purchases made for community kitchen coming under GST, SGPC expects an additional burden of Rs 100 million JAIDEEP SARIN, CHANDIGARH

I

t is known as the world’s largest community kitchen — feeding freshly cooked food to an estimated 50,000 devotees on weekdays and over 100,000 on weekends and festivals. But the newly-introduced GST is going to put an extra burden of over Rs 100 million on this socio-religious activity at the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar and other gurdwaras, temple officials say. With purchases made for the community kitchen coming under various slabs of the new GST, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the mini-parliament of the Sikh religion that manages Sikh shrines (gurdwaras) in Punjab, Haryana

and Himachal Pradesh, including the Harmandir Sahib (popularly known as the Golden Temple), is expecting an additional burden of Rs 100 million from this year.

Earlier, the Punjab government had exempted all items purchased for langar by SGPC Besides the Golden Temple, the SGPC runs the langar services in other famous Sikh shrines like Takht Keshgarh Sahib in Anandpur Sahib (where the modern day Khalsa Panth was established on April 13, 1699, by Guru Gobind Singh), Takht Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo in Bathinda district and scores

of other gurdwaras under it. The “langar sewa” (community kitchen) is a socio-religious activity that is part of the Sikh religious ethos from the time of the first Sikh Guru, Nanak Dev (1469-1539). The langar was started to emphasize equality in society regardless of religion, caste, color and creed. With the new GST slabs likely to hit SGPC ‘s purchases, Union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal has written to Finance Minister Arun Jaitely to exempt all purchases made by SGPC for “langar sewa” from the GST Act. “The Punjab government had earlier exempted all items purchased for langar by SGPC at Sri Darbar Sahib Amritsar, Sri Keshgarh Sahib Anandpur and Talwandi Sabo Bathinda from VAT. The

SGPC spends around Rs 750 million to purchase desi ghee, sugar and pulses. Now, it will have to bear

Rs 100 million on these purchases as they come under the five to 18 per cent GST bracket,” Badal said.

Saudi Arabia-based NRI has joined hands with Super 30, a free coaching centre which helps children from poor families reach the prestigious IIT engineering institutes, to help talented youth from the minority community prepare for the IIT and other technical education courses. Obaidur Rahman, a businessman who is also chairman of the Bihar foundation in Saudi Arabia, has formed an organization called Rahman 30, which will select 30 talented students from the minority community through screening tests. These students will be provided free coaching by Super 30

founder director Anand Kumar. “The main objective is to give the students employable education through rigorous training. This is what is lacking for the minorities. They don’t get quality technical

‘Super 30’ is a free coaching centre which helps children from poor families to reach the IIT engineering institutes and job-oriented education, as they find it hard to reach that level due to their poor financial condition,” said Rahman, citing various studies. The initiative of Rahman and Super 30 will help provide

opportunity to talented students from the minority community to move ahead in life, say experts. According to a 2014-15 survey by the Human Resource Development Ministry, minorities continue to be at the bottom among all social groups when it comes to higher education, with just 4.4 per cent enrolment. The dropout rate among Muslims is also very high at 17.6 per cent. Rahman said it was time for him to give something back to society in a meaningful way. “Education is the only way in which one can make meaningful contribution to society, as it has the power to change generations, as I have seen at Super 30,” said Rahman, who is on a visit to Patna.

Parrikar told reporters that the five day visit was planned and finalized when he was serving as Defense Minister. “This invitation was given and accepted when I was Defense Minister. Then, as a Defense Minister, I was thinking of planning a visit to the US, which I had agreed to visit every quarter. Once from the US Secretary of Defense and once from me. Every sixth month I was to visit US. So I was thinking of planning this (attending the event) around that time, so that both can be done. “But now that I have become chief minister, they (the organizers) insisted that I still come,” he also said. —IANS

PIO boy beats Einstein, Hawking in IQ test IANS, LONDON

n 11-year-old Indian-origin boy here has scored 162 in the prestigious Mensa IQ test, two points higher than geniuses Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. Arnav Sharma, from Reading town in southern England, passed the infamously difficult test a few weeks back with zero preparation. Mensa IQ test was developed in Britain to form an elite society of

intelligent people, the Independent reported. The “genius benchmark” is set at 140 and Sharma gained a score of 162 — the maximum possible result you can achieve on the paper. His mark in the exam, which primarily measures verbal reasoning ability, puts him in the top one per cent of the nation in terms of IQ level. “The Mensa test is quite hard and not many people pass it, so do not expect to pass,” Sharma told

the daily. Sharma said: “I had no preparation at all for the exam but I was not nervous. My family were surprised but they were also very happy when I told them about the result.” The boy’s mother, Meesha

Dhamija Sharma, said she kept her “fingers crossed” during his exam. “I was thinking what is going to happen because you never know and he had never seen what a paper looks like,” she said.

ndia and Israel on Wednesday decided to scale up their relationship to that of a strategic partnership in the fight against terror, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying the two countries have “agreed to do much more to protect our strategic interests” and to combat rising radicalization and terrorism including in the cyber-space. On the second day of the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister, Modi, after discussions with host Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, sought to balance New Delhi’s traditional ties with Israel’s neighbors by saying India hoped that “peace, dialogue and restraint” will prevail in West Asia. Modi is making a stand-alone visit to Israel and not combining it with a trip to Palestine. In his briefing, Foreign Secretary S. Jais-

Modi announces flight service between Delhi-Mumbai-Tel Aviv TEL AVIV: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced to start a new flight service connecting Delhi, Mumbai and Tel Aviv. “Now a Delhi-Mumbai-Tel Aviv air service will be initiated. And so I invite youth of Israel to visit India,” Modi announced while addressing the Indian Diaspora in Tel Aviv’s Convention Centre. Air India had earlier announced to

hankar said India favored a negotiated, peaceful settlement of the Palestine issue. Besides concurrence on strategic issues, India and Israel signed seven agreements and MoUs in space, water management and conservation and agriculture cooperation. One accord provides for set-

start direct flight between Delhi and Tel Aviv. The flight service was to start in May but the launch was delayed as several countries, which fall in the selected route, denied the overflight permission. Air India used to operate directs flights to Israel from Delhi until mid1990s and Mumbai until early 2000. The flights were withdrawn for commercial reasons.

ting up of $40 million fund to be spent over five years for technological innovation. Netanyahu said the two leaders recognized that their countries faced forces of terror which seek to undermine peace and stability. “We have agreed to cooperate in this field as well,” he said.

Modi meets little Moshe

JERUSALEM: Moshe Holtzberg, the boy whose Jewish parents were killed during the Mumbai terror attacks of 2008, on Wednesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi who said he would be granted a long-term visa to stay and visit in India as he liked. Moshe’s parents — Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg — were killed during the attack on the Chabad House in Mumbai in the 26/11 terror attacks. Moshe was two years old when the attack happened. The boy, now about 11 years old, read out a written note as he met the visiting Indian Prime Minister, and conveyed his best wishes to Modi for remaining the Prime Minister of India for many years — in Hindi. —IANS

The two leaders addressed the media after one-on-one and delegation level talks, with Jaishankar describing it as an “upbeat conversation as between two peoples and two cultures who can work together”. A joint statement issued after the talks said “...strong measures should be taken against terrorists and terror organizations and all those who encourage, support and finance or provide sanctuary to terrorists and terror groups”. This, Jaishankar said, was a fairly clear and expressive description on the issue of terror and it was possible to reduce it to three words — cross border terrorism — which a reporter said was missing in the joint statement. It also said that “this historic first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Israel solidified the enduring friendship between their peoples”.

Chasing 233, Sri Lanka never looked in the contention as they lost their wickets at regular intervals. Middle-order players — Chamari Atapattu (25), Dilani Manodara (37) and Shashikala Siriwardene (61) — however, displayed some good batting, but Indian bowlers soon overpowered them. Besides these, however, no other Sri Lankan batswomen stepped up to the occasion and losing wickets at the regular intervals, Sri Lanka went down to India. For India, Poonam Yadav and Jhulan Goswami took two wickets each. Earlier, winning the toss and electing to bat, Deepti Sharma (78) and skipper Mithali Raj (53) helped India post what turned out to be a decent 232/8. After a poor start by the top order batswomen, Deepti and Mithali forged a 118-run thirdwicket partnership in 26 overs to stabilize the Indian innings.

For India, Poonam Yadav and Jhulan Goswami took two wickets each.

But just when things seemed good at the middle, Deepti was sent packing in the 37th over by pacer Ama Kanchana. Deepti slammed 10 boundaries in her 110-ball knock. New batswoman Jhulan Goswami (9) was dismissed in the 40th over and in the same over Miltali was adjudged leg before wicket off Slow left-arm orthodox Inoka

Ranaweera. Middle-order batswomen Harmanpreet Kaur (20) and Veda Krishnamurthy (29) added 50 runs for the sixth wicket before both players were dismissed by pacer S. Weerakkody in the same over. Lower-order batswomen Sushma Verma (11) and Mansi Joshi (2) struggled in the slog overs, and as a result Sri Lanka managed to

keep India below the 250-run mark. For Sri Lanka, Weerakkody scalped three wickets while Ranaweera took two wickets. Brief scores: India 232/8 (Deepti Sharma 78 Mithali Raj 53; Weerakkody 3/28) against Sri Lanka: 216/7 (Dilani Manodara 37, Shashikala Siriwardene 61; Poonam Yadav 2/23).

DERBY: Left-arm spinner Ekta Bisht picked up a five-wicket haul as India defeated arch rivals Pakistan by 95 runs in a group match of the Women's cricket World Cup at the County Ground. Electing to bat first, India produced 169/9. In reply, Pakistan were bundled out for 74 runs with Bisht doing most of the damage with figures of 5/18. This was the third consecutive victory in this tournament for India. They had defeated hosts England by 35 runs in the opening match of their campaign before thrashing the West Indies by seven wickets. Indian skipper Mithali Raj used her bowling changes well as the bowlers clinched breakthroughs at regular intervals. Bisht maintained a tight length which did not allow the Pakistan batters to open up their arms and score easily. Medium-pacer Mansi Joshi also bowled economically, clinching two wickets while giving away just nine runs in her 6.1 overs. —IANS

FIFA U-17 World Cup tickets a sellout in Kolkata again KOLKATA: In less than 12 hours after re-opening, phase I tickets for the FIFA U-17 World Cup matches, to be held at the Salt Lake stadium here, were sold out, according to the FIFA website. Much like the first time, when in almost similar time the website had marked “sold out” in red, football fanatics of the city which will host the final of the youth showpiece on October 28 latched on to the opportunity and bought tickets in no time. Ticket sales for phase I are scheduled to end on July 7 after the official draw to be held in Mumbai. Besides Kolkata, Guwahati and Kochi are the other two centres

which have opened phase I ticket sales but are yet to be sold out. “The response from Kolkata was again amazing, buying all the inventory put out for sale in less than 10 hours. It shows how much the World Cup really means for all the football lovers in the city and that we will definitely have an atmosphere of celebration for the tournament,” Local organizing Committee (LoC) Tournament Director Javier Ceppi said. “The other venues where ticket sales were opened again are also looking very good and it is a huge step in the right direction to make football take over India in October,” the Chilean added. —IANS

ars Stindl struck the only goal as Germany beat Chile 1-0 to win the Confederations Cup in St Petersburg. Borussia Monchengladbach forward Stindl tapped home against the run of play after a defensive blunder midway through the first half as world champions Germany added another major trophy to their collection, The Independent reported. Copa America winners Chile wasted a lot of goalscoring chances and with the help of a superb stoppage-time save from goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, coach Joachim Low’s side held on to win the tournament for the first time. Alexis Sanchez flashed a shot wide in the second minute, Arturo Vidal’s effort from inside the penalty area was parried by Ter Stegen and Eduardo Vargas fired over the crossbar from 25 yards. Another effort from Vargas was well held by Ter Stegen as Chile looked the more likely to break the deadlock. Ter Stegen then spilled Vidal’s shot from outside the area into the path of Sanchez, but the Arsenal

forward could not control the rebound and another chance went begging. Moments later Germany snatched a 20th-minute lead with their first meaningful effort on goal. Chile defender Marcelo Diaz gifted Timo Werner the ball on the edge of the box and the Germany striker ran on and turned the ball across goal for Stindl to tap into an empty net. Meanwhile, European champions Portugal scripted a comeback win to beat Mexico 2-1 in the third place play-off at the FIFA Confederations Cup. Portugal were without superstar

Cristiano Ronaldo during Sunday’s match. Cristiano received permission last Wednesday from Portuguese coach Fernando Santos to go on a vacation, reports Efe news agency. Andre Silva failed to open the scoring for Portugal when he missed a penalty during the first half. After a scoreless first half, Portuguese defender Luis Neto scored a self-goal 10 minutes into the second half. Mexico’s star forward Javier Hernández made a run down the left flank before unleashing a square pass into the six-yard box from the backline.

‘Oscars needs to diversify’

I'd like to see more opportunities for foreign films at the Oscars. I hope to help change the way foreign language films are considered, says Priyanka IANS, LOS ANGELES

I

ndian actress Priyanka Chopra, who is among those invited to be part of the Oscar Academy’s ‘Class of 2017’, says “a progress” towards embracing diversity has been made by the Academy of Motion Picture of Arts & Sciences (AMPAS), but she’d like to see more foreign representation at the ceremony. “While the numbers have their own story to tell, I think it’s important to recognize that progress is being made. It’s going to take some time to correct, but continuous efforts always help,” Priyanka told ew.com. The actress and former beauty queen has made her own space in the US after featuring as the lead in TV show Quantico and as the antagonist in Hollywood film Baywatch.

Priyanka Chopra is invited to be part of the Oscar Academy’s ‘Class of 2017’.

She is among a string of Indians invited by the Oscar Academy to vote this time — like actors Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Irrfan Khan, Salman Khan and Deepika

Padukone; directors like Mrinal Sen, Buddhadeb Dasgupta and Goutam Ghose; costume designer Arjun Bhasin; writers like Anand Patwardhan and Sooni Taraporevala; and noted sound design-

er Amrit Pritam Dutta. “It’s interesting that though (past) winners were Indian, it was for their work in international films — largely about India, but not made by India,” Priyanka said. She said: “It is very rare to see foreign language films represented in the other categories. The class of 2017 does have a very diverse collection, including a few from my country, and one hopes that we all work together to push the larger picture.” “I'd like to see more opportunities for foreign films to be represented at the Oscars. If the Oscars are trying to diversify and touch the globe, which the Academy seems to be doing with this new class, I hope to help change the way foreign language films are received and considered,” Priyanka added.

‘Mom’: Shoots the ball out of the park

J

ust when you think Sridevi has run out of surprises, she does Mom. A film so steeped in the angst of maternal revenge that you fear it will tie itself up in angry knots. But no. There is a certain... what do you call it? ‘Thehrao’ — a moral narrative equanimity in the storytelling. A lot of it comes from Sridevi’s central performance as a mother craving acceptance from a disgruntled unhappy daughter. They bond after a family crisis. Out of this age-old done-to-death yarn, debutant director Ravi Udyawar weaves an exceedingly impressive saga of vendetta that leaves us disturbingly satisfied. The hallmark of a solid revenge

Film: “Mom”; Director: Ravi Udyawar; Cast: Sridevi, Adnan Siddiqui, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Akshaye Khanna, Sajal Ali and Abhimanyu Singh; Rating: *****

‘Mom’ is an important film, says Indian film critic, journalist Subhash K. Jha

tale is the ability for the audience to slip into the protagonist’s mindspace and live his or her agony. Here, Sridevi doesn’t allow us a moment’s reprieve. It is hard to

look away from her anguished responses to her daughter’s predicament for even a second. Yes, she is THAT effective. Nothing from her past performances

prepares us for her bravura turn as a mother who will avenge the wrong done to her child, come what may. Mom is not only about Sridevi’s performance. Unlike many of her earlier films, including the wonderful English Vinglish, where the rest of the cast paled into insignificance, Mom is bolstered by a solid supporting cast. Sajal Ali as Sridevi’s daughter is vulnerable and strong.

ZOFEEN MAQSOOD

For Anuradha Behari, it was a trip to India that she took many years ago that showed her what was so wrong about the representation of Indian culture not just in Chicago but also in the U.S. As an attendee at the Jaipur Literature Festival, the world’s largest annual congregation of authors, artists, scholars and intellectuals that is held in the Pink city of India, Behari saw the real, contemporary face of India. A trend that was sadly not much talked about abroad.

DISCOVERING INDIA IN CHICAGO

B

ehari says, “I came to the US some 20 years ago and have been a Chicago resident for 12 years now. I noticed that despite an ever-increasing Indian presence here, no one was bringing the current cultural scene of India here. There were two extremes between which the popular perception about India rested – people either knew and recognized it through Bollywood or were relating India with the classical and ancient culture. There was so much that happened in the cultural and performing arts field in India in the past two decades which was so relevant and relatable for the western world that it was important to give it a platform.” Behari recalls, “I was there with my mom, who is an eminent Hindi writer and I met the producer of the event and spoke to him how its so important that a festival like that comes to Chicago. I explained not only is Chicago, the festival city of the US but also people are extremely receptive of great content and cultural variations coming from across the globe. And hence the idea of Eye on India was born.” Today, the festival that was initiated in 2011 along with collaboration from Team Workarts in India has grown into a three week long annual festival in Chicago. Eye on India, organizes not just events, workshops, dialogues and performances during the festival but also smaller events through out the year. It also connects both artists from India and from America to a wider audience spanning across two continents. CHICAGO SHOWED SUPPORT For Behari who had until now worked in the corporate segment, taking a leap to the art and culture world was a big move. However she noted that the Chicagoans offered more than just encouragement and support. She says the people from ethnic media affirmed their faith in the idea. They felt that something like this hadn’t happened in Chicago before and were glad that someone was thinking about it. This aside, she adds, “ I remember getting in touch with all the cultural organizations in the city.

THE CITY OF CHICAGO OFFERED A VERY HEALTHY ECOSYSTEM FOR OUR FESTIVAL THAT BRINGS THE CURRENT INDIA CLOSER TO CHICAGO AND TAKES A PIECE OF CHICAGO TO INDIA

Anudradha Behari

Everyone I met seemed interested in knowing more about India and discovering this exciting and current side of our culture that fits so seamlessly amongst the artisans and literati in the Western world.” Behari says, “In Chicago if I ever met someone who could not help me, they referred me to someone who might be more useful in my endeavor. Thus through a network of artist, organizations, cultural centers, museums, universities and art hubs we created an umbrella where there were people willing to bring about this positive development.”

I repeatedly tell everyone that Chicago was the best place to bring about this event because of the creative synergies. INDIA IN CHICAGO As an organizer, Behari is extremely clear that Eye on India, is not a desi event in Chicago. For the organizers the mission is about presenting India in its present context to Chicago and taking Chicago to India. The process is organic and it is about discovering richer nuances of each other’s cultures. Behari says, “Every year we work with a set of extremely talented artists

A LOT OF INDIA THAT WE SEE ABROAD IS EITHER JUST BOLLYWOOD OR A VERY ARCHAIC REPRESENTATION OF OUR CULTURE. WE NEED TO SHOW THE CONTEMPORARY INDIA TO THE WORLD and many experiences have been eye-opening for me, as a Chicagoan of Indian origin. She relates a particularly emotional experience, saying, “A few years ago, we were able to take 40 American kids from Chicago Children’s Choir to India to attend the Jaipur Literature Festival where they performed and also toured a few cities in India. Looking at these children from Chicago in India made me so overwhelmed and made me realize how much of Chicago I really carried in my heart. In our everyday lives while living here we miss India, the idea and the memories so much but that experience taught me that as we build our lives here there is so much of America that grows on us and we become equally attached to both these worlds.” Perhaps, it is this emotional collision that is the aim of the festival. For the organizers it is more about coming together as two countries and starting a dialogue on how much we can assimilate and appreciate from each other’s cultures. MORE THAN THE PERFORMANCES But before you thought that the festival is only centered on performances and entertainment through culture, a look into the previous years’ calendars confirms that the artists connect on a much deeper grass root level. Behari informs that they have worked with all the important cultural organizations in Chicago such as the Field Museum, Columbia College, Chicago Children Choir, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, University of Chicago and so many more. The organizations pay special emphasis on how the touring artists can benefit the local Chicago population too and Behari and her volunteers also plan the

itinerary likewise. She says, “When music group Rajasthan Josh visited Chicago for the festival we also took them for outreach program to a black neighborhood in Chicago called, The Little Black Pearl where kids from violent families live. The idea is to create a beneficial environment whether it is by creating Bollywood dance classes in schools and universities or through dialogues about India.” The fact that the cultural scene in Chicago may be more accepting of Indian crafts also came to Behari when The Chicago Shakespeare Society selected to showcase Piya Behrupiya, a Hindi play inspired by Shakespeare’s works. Behari says, “It was a gratifying moment to know that the society found a common ground in a Hindi play and 50 percent of the attendees were non-Indians.” For Behari and her team there are moments such as these that confirm that their attempt to create a platform for exchange is getting it due recognition. The way Behari would like to describe her festival is that it is a Chicago festival with a focus on India. The efforts are paying off as the team informs that now there are so many local American artists who have worked in and around India who are approaching them and they are only too happy

to help their works reach India. GRATIFYING MOMENTS Behari who had a background in supply chain management before she got involved into Eye on Chicago says that along with her husband and owing to the nature of his job she had been a part of a lot of civic events in America. She says, “I always felt that India was never represented the way it deserved to be because the people were not bringing the attention towards so many great things that were happening. There was so much talent and so many young new artists with dazzling ideas but still the representation was lacking.” She says, “I always draw the analogy from an Indian restaurant. While people in the West go to an Indian restaurant for food, no one wants to explore it for an experience and that is the perception I wanted to change.” Along the way, Behari realized that so many organizations were looking forward to collaborate on Indian events but they didn’t know whom to approach. Also to move beyond the obvious the festival tries and engages in out of the box ideas. Behari informs, “Some time ago, we did an event called Conversations with India, where we invited four regular families to just talk about India.

A PLATFORM LIKE EYE ON INDIA WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE IN ANY OTHER CITY. PEOPLE IN CHICAGO HAVE AN AFFINITY TOWARDS ARIOUS TRADITIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS ARE VERY WELCOMING TO OTHER CULTURES. The session that was supposed to be an hour extended beyond it, as people got so interested in finding out about India. Last year we also did a workshop on Kolam, an art form practiced by women in Tamil Nadu and its mathematical connection. We also did a sari project with Columbia College and let the local students interpret and understand the traditional Indian garment. We are interested in showing what is common between India and Chicago and also to help Indians realize that how wonderful a place Chicago is to live. There is so much of India in Chicago, we only need to discover it.”

NEW YORK: Individuals who take drugs that are commonly used to treat heartburn, ulcers and other gastrointestinal problems for a prolonged time may be at an increased risk of death, researchers warned. The findings showed that people taking these drugs called as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) had a 50 per cent increased risk of dying over the next five years. “People have the idea that PPIs are very safe because they are readily available, but there are real risks to taking these drugs, particularly for long periods of time,” said Ziyad Al-Aly, Assistant Professor at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Further, for every 500 people taking PPIs for a year, there was one extra death that would not have otherwise occurred. Given the millions of people who take PPIs regularly, this could translate into thousands of excess deaths every year, Al-Aly said. PPIs have also been linked to a variety of health problems, including kidney damage, researchers said.

Designer Gaurav Jai Gupta, who has a brand named Akaaro, told IANS: "Akaaro is the continuously growing and evolving voice of con-

temporary Indian fashion. "Our line for Collection Premier Moscow is all hand-woven in-house. We have worked on new contemporary blends of cotton, silk and metal, resulting in interesting new textures." —Nivedita

Night shifts may hamper DNA repair IANS, NEW YORK

I Art goes public in the capital NEW DELHI: Suddenly, dull residential areas in the centre of the capital, with their typical box-shaped, whitewashed government housing, have come to life. The area around Lodhi Road, which has one of the capital’s oldest markets, has now come to be known as perhaps the country’s first publicart area. The once poster-defaced walls of the colony are today painted with graffiti and wall art as muralists have

found a new canvas, taking art to open spaces for everyone, instead of restricting it within the four walls of a gallery for only the cognoscenti. “A lot of artists are turning into open gallery like graffiti and wall art as a medium, to display their creativity in open spaces and make it visible to a far larger audience than they would ever get in a gallery,” Yogesh Saini, Founder of Delhi Street Art (DSA), told IANS. —Somrita Ghosh

f you are working on night shifts regularly, chances are your body’s ability to repair DNA damage may get hampered, suggest researchers led by one of Indian-origin. The findings suggested that night shifts suppress the production of ‘sleep hormone’ melatonin. It revealed that a night shift worker produced lower levels of a chemical by-product of active DNA tissue repair called 8-OHdG in the urine than his day counterpart, leading cells to harbour higher levels of DNA damage. This indicated a reduced capacity to repair cellular damage, the study said. The key factor behind this observed difference was likely to be suppressed production of the ‘sleep

Bills to crack down on illegal immigration

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- The Republican-led House on June 29 pressed ahead with legislation to crack down on illegal immigration, a key priority for President Donald Trump. One Bill would strip federal dollars from self-proclaimed “sanctuary” cities that shield residents from federal immigration authorities, while a separate Bill would stiffen punishments for people who re-enter the US illegally. Trump often railed against illegal immigration during his presidential campaign, and his support for tougher immigration policies is crucial to his voting base. Trump met at the White House on June 28 with more than a dozen people whose family members were killed by people in the country illegally, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions is set to meet with the families as well. One of the Bills, known as “Kate’s Law,”

W

would impose harsher prison sentences on deportees who re-enter the US. The Bill is named after 32-year old Kathryn Steinle, who was shot and killed in California in 2015 by a man who was in the country illegally. A second Bill would bar states and localities that refuse to cooperate with immigration authorities from receiving certain Justice Department and Homeland

Security grants, including some related to law enforcement and terrorism. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said he appreciates Congress’s effort to “address the dangers of sanctuary cities and illegal immigrant offenders.” At a news conference at the Capitol with House Speaker Paul Ryan, Kelly said his agency “will enforce the laws that are passed by Congress,” adding: “I am offended when members of this institution put pressure and often threaten me and my officers to ignore the laws they make.” The Justice Department’s inspector general has identified California and major cities such as Chicago, New York and Philadelphia as locales with barriers to information-sharing among local police and immigration officials. The Trump administration warned nine jurisdictions in late April that they could lose coveted law enforcement grant money unless they document cooperation. The Asian Americans Advancing Justice,

2 Indians charged with accounting fraud BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Two Chicagoarea businessmen of Indian origin have been accused by the Securities and Exchange Commission for alleged accounting fraud. The charges also include the information technology company Quadrant 4 System Corp (QFOR) where they served formerly as top executives. The fraud scheme allegedly misled investors and allowed the two executives to siphon millions for their personal benefit, says the Commission complaint filed on June 29. The charges, which were filed at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, allege that former chief executive officer Nandu Thondavadi and former chief financial officer Dhru Desai allegedly stole more than $4 million from Schaumburg, Illinois-based QFOR over a nearly five-year period. The charges include fraud, falsifying

an affiliation of five civil rights organizations, in a June 28 statement in response to the two Bills, said it strongly opposes both H.R. 3003 and H.R. 3004 “and the passage of any immigration enforcement legislation that would increase indiscriminate enforcement, further the criminalization of immigrants and instil more fear in already terrified communities.” It noted that roughly 40 per cent of all immigrants come to the US from Asia, and 1.6 million of those immigrants are undocumented. “Anti-immigrant policies create a climate of fear for all immigrants, regardless of status,” the organization said. “We are horrified and dismayed that House leadership has chosen to line up behind the administration in its scapegoating of immigrants,” it added. “Both of these Bills further the administration’s goals of criminalizing all immigrants.” The Bills are scheduled to be voted on by the end of the month.

10 hurt in Bronx building blaze BY A STAFF WRITER RONX, NY -- Ten people, including civilians and emergency responders, were injured after a large fire broke out in Longwood in the afternoon

B

on July 3. More than a hundred firefighters responded to the blaze on the second floor of 851 E. 163 St. near Prospect Avenue at about 11:52 am, an FDNY spokeswoman said. Flames were seen shooting out of a secondfloor window, sending dark plumes of smoke up the building’s fire escape. It took the FDNY about an hour to get the fire under control; two firefighters and one NYPD officer suffered minor injuries. A witness told reporters that he saw a firefighter carry a badly-burned woman out of the building. A lot of people were jumping off the fire escape also when they got to the second-floor landing. Seven civilians also suffered injuries, one seriously, and six of them were taken to area hospitals in stable condition. Two apartments were destroyed, according

to the Red Cross, who provided emergency

housing to at least one family.

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK , NY-- Pandora announced on June 27 that Indian American executive Naveen Chopra has been named interim chief executive officer of the company. Co-founder and CEO Tim Wintergreen, under intensifying competitive pressure from Spotify and Apple Music is relinquishing his position and stepping down from the company board. Chopra, the chief financial officer, will remain in the interim CEO role as the company seeks a permanent replacement. Pandora had 4.7 million paying subscribers at the end of March, while Spotify said it had more than 50 million. Pandora and other streaming music services use algorithms to determine what listeners want to hear, based on the songs they like and do not like. Ads are played in the free version, but users can pay $5 per month to listen ad-free. Pandora makes most of its money from the free version, bringing in nearly $1.1 billion in ad revenue last year. The company, based in Oakland, Calif., also said June 27 that Michael Herring has stepped down as president and that former MySpace and MTV Networks executive Jason Hirschhorn is joining Pandora’s board. Prior to joining Pandora, Chopra served as interim CEO of TiVo Inc. A graduate of Stanford in computer science and economics, he also earned an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Teenaged boy steals FBI agent’s car BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- A 17-year-old has been charged with hijacking an FBI agent’s car. The teen was arrested on July 4, a day after the car---with guns and a bulletproof vest inside--was stolen in the West Loop, the police said. The SUV was found that night in the 900 block of South Leavitt Street, where the car had been left and gotten a ticket. The car was taken about 12:09 am on July 3 when the driver left the engine running and walked away for a moment in the 300 block of South Morgan Street. The teen got into the car and sped off as the agent tried to get the car back. The agent was dragged by the car. The SUV contained several guns, tactical gear and a ballistic vest, an FBI spokesman said.

C

Some of that equipment was found in another car on July 3, but officials said they hadn’t found the guns yet. The teen has been charged with vehicular hijacking, aggravated battery of a government employee and unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Chinmaya Aradhana Camp 2017 on Sat 29th July, 3:00 pm at Pheasant Run Resort, St. Charles Ballroom, 4051 E Main St, St Charles, IL 60174

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Drivers in Chicago are being warned about thieves targeting cars left running at gas stations. It can happen quickly. The owner of a West Loop gas station showed a video of the most recent theft. “Not even a minute. You are talking about 30 seconds, not even that,” said Suresh Loganathan. That video is now part of an FBI investigation. On July 3 morning, an FBI agent had his FBI-issued car and guns stolen. But it appears the vehicle was still on when the thieves escaped with the booty.

C

The case got a lot of attention, but the gas station owner said there were two other incidents in the last four months in which the motorist left the car running and thieves took off in the cars. “Everything happened too fast, in the blink of an eye, that’s it,” Loganathan said. “Don’t leave your car running with the keys in it. A lot of these are crimes of opportunity. If you don’t give them that opportunity, then there won’t be a crime,” said Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson. It is not only a security issue, it can also be a safety issue. The American Petroleum Institute made an appeal to turn off the vehicle when fuelling as fumes can be flammable.

Preet Bharara claims strong case against Trump BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY – Indian American prosecutor Preet Bharara, who was fired by Donald Trump’s administration in March, has said that said there was “absolute evidence” to begin a case for obstruction of justice against the President. The former US attorney for the Southern District of New York made the remarks in an ABC news interview on June 11 when asked whether he believed that there was enough evidence for a case claiming that Trump tried to obstruct the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into former national security adviser, Michael Flynn’s ties with Russian officials. “There is absolutely evidence to begin a case for obstruction of justice by Trump,” Bharara said in his first television interview since being fired by Trump. “No one knows right now whether there is a provable case of obstruction... there’s no basis to say there’s no obstruction.” Bharara was in office until March when he and 45 other US attorneys remaining as

holdovers from the former President Barack Obama’s administration were asked to step down. Bharara, a friend and former colleague of James Comey–the FBI director fired by Trump in May–attended the Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on June 8 when Comey testified about conversations he had with the President about the agency’s overall Russia investigation and its probe into Flynn. Bharara said in the interview that watching how Comey’s interactions with Trump and

how his firing played out “felt a little bit like déjà vu.” The Indian American said Trump, when he was still the President-elect, made a series of “unusual phone calls” to him. “In reporting the phone call to the chief of staff to the attorney general, I said it appeared to be that he was trying to cultivate some kind of relationship,” Bharara said. “It’s a very weird and peculiar thing for a one-on-one conversation without the attorney general, without warning between the President and me or any United States attorney who has been asked to investigate various things and is in a position hypothetically to investigate business interests and associates of the President.” After Trump took office, Bharara refused to take one of Trump’s calls. “The call came in. I got a message. We deliberated over it, thought it was inappropriate to return the call. And 22 hours later I was asked to resign along with 45 other people,” Bharara said. “To this day, I have no idea why I was fired,” Bharara added.

Eid celebrated with prayers and gaiety BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- North Bergen celebrated Eid al-Fitr on the morning of the June 25 at Braddock Park where community members decided to pray outside in the nice weather rather than inside a mosque, where prayers are usually held. The Al-Wali Mosque is Edison also saw a huge turnout on June 24 morning when more than 2,000 devotees came for Eid prayers at 8 am and again at 9:30 am. Eid al-Fitr, the holiday that ends the holy month of Ramadan, was celebrated by Muslims throughout the world. From India to the Middle East, Europe to the US, thousands waited to get a glimpse of the moon on the eve of the festival. In Ridgefield Park, a section of Overpeck Park in Bergen County, New Jersey, approximately 30 people gathered to await the crescent-shaped moon of Eid. This is a tradition that goes back almost 1,400 years and is known as an Islamic tradition called moon sighting. According to NorthJersey.com, the method of moon sighting goes back to the time of the

N

Prophet Muhammad; however, the ritual of determining the date of this holiday differs among mosques and countries. Since Muslims follow a lunar calendar, Eid falls on a different day each year and if the moon is not spotted on the eve of Eid, then the month of fasting is extended by one day. Luckily, a moon sighting was reported in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at 9:15 pm and the Eid Committee of New Jersey alerted the community

that Eid would take place on June 25 this year. The Eid Committee used a ‘local’ method to detect when Eid would occur by using moon sightings across the US and other parts of the Western Hemisphere, in contrary to other mosques who use a ‘global’ method using moon sighting from around the world to determine the day of Eid and others who use a ‘scientific’ method that relies on astronomical data to set the date in advance.

Sikh man confronts teen for racial slur

n Indian American Sikh was called ‘Osama’ by a teenager, in an alleged incident of racism towards members of the Sikh community. Simran Jeet Singh, a post-doctoral Fellow at New York University’s Center for Religion and Media and a senior religion Fellow for advocacy group Sikh Coalition, recalled the encounter in an essay on NBC News. Singh also wrote about how he did not remain silent at being called racial slurs and confronted the young African American man. He said he was running along the Hudson River in the city, heading from his office at NYU to his home. Even though he had headphones in his ears, he could still hear someone shouting at him, “Osama! Osama!” along with another inappropriate expletive. When he turned to see who was yelling, he saw a group of three young teenagers. Singh said he had first decided to continue on his way but he soon recalled another incident from the past week, when an older woman had called him a different racial slur as she walked by him. Singh had not responded to that woman but later regretted not confronting her. Singh said he stopped his run and turned around and after deciding it was relatively safe, he slowly approached the teenager who had shouted at him. The teen avoided eye contact as Singh walked up to him. As Singh approached him, the teenager said that he was joking and apologized. However, Singh said it is not as easy as giving an apology.

Burned Quran filled with bacon found BY A STAFF WRITER ACRAMENTO, CA -- Two Islamic centers in Northern California were the sites of possible hate crimes during the last days of Ramadan. A burned Quran filled with bacon was found outside a Sacramento mosque on June 24, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department said. It was hanging by a handcuff from a temporary fence outside the Masjid Annur Islamic Center. “Sheriff’s Hate Crime detectives were called to the scene to begin their investigation into the possible hate crime,” the department said in a statement. The center, which is the largest mosque in the greater Sacramento area, is next to a police station but it has been targeted in the past. Another center was targeted about 20 miles west in Davis, California. BY A STAFF WRITER EWARK, NJ -- US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers separately arrested two men, one of them Indian, after they were released from the custody of Middlesex County, New Jersey. The federal immigration enforcement agency had previously lodged detainers on the two individuals while they were in the county’s custody, but the county failed to honor the requests, ICE said in a press release on June 19. The two men are Maulik Gajjar, an Indian citizen, and Aurelio Hernandez Cortez, a Mexican citizen. On May 22, ICE lodged an immigration detainer on Gajjar with the Middlesex County facility, but on the same day, the correctional facility released him from custody without notifying ICE, the federal agency said. Gajjar is currently facing state criminal charges.

Davis, Sgt. Dan Powell with the Davis Police Department said. It’s not the first time the center was attacked or vandalized. In January, the police said 30-year-old Lauren Kirk-Coehlo broke windows, damaged property and placed bacon on door handles at the Davis center. She was sentenced to five years’ probation on June 15 after pleading guilty to a felony hate crime.

The Sacramento chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations called both incidents “apparent acts of intimidation” and thanked law enforcement for their response. “Decisive action by law enforcement authorities sends a strong message of deterrence to anyone who contemplates turning their bigoted views into acts of intimidation,” said Basim Elkarra, the group’s executive director.

Nassau County honors Dr. Avdhoot Shivanand

Carnegie Endowment honor for Indian

Milan Vaishnav

(L-R) Comptroller George Maragos, Dr.Avdhoot Shivanand Ji & Dilip Chauhan

BY A STAFF WRITER INEOLA, NY -- Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos has welcomed Dr. Avadhoot Shivanand Ji to Nassau County at a ceremony hosted by the Shiv Yog Foundation at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building. Dr. Avadhoot Shivanand Ji is a celebrated humanitarian and spiritual leader of the global Indian community with followers in over a hundred countries. His teaching of selfempowerment, sharing unconditional love, and accepting everyone in their originality is believed by his followers to have cured many psychosomatic diseases. His followers, who lovingly call him Baba

M

Ji, felt like they were in the presence of divinity. The honoring ceremony was attended by a standing room only audience of Nassau County followers. Comptroller George Maragos in his remarks welcomed Dr. Avadhoot Shivanand Ji as “an inspirational spiritual leader” and presented Baba Ji with a Proclamation to commemorate the honor of his visit. Dilip Chauhan, a prominent South Asian Community Leader who addressed the gathering, said the uplifting presence of Dr.Avdhoot Shivanand Ji which could draw over 600 people in New York for such an intense spiritual ten-day event is commendable. He said he was elated as an Indian American and lover of Indian culture for the official recognition extended to Dr. Shivanand.

Shiv Yog Foundation has undertaken many projects to serve the humanity such as feeding the hungry, helping farmers, providing education for the poor, distributing free school uniforms, serving the disowned animals and providing free ration to the needy villagers, Chauhan added. In his remarks, Dr.Avdhoot Shivanand Ji expressed his happiness and praised the Shiv Yogis for their hard work in making the event a grand success. He noted the success of the Indian community in Nassau County but reminded his followers that “one cannot achieve happiness and success without first health and family. If those two conditions are met, then the attainment of happiness is possible.”

Closure of MVCs hits customers in NJ BY A STAFF WRITER DISON, NJ - Confusion and frustration hit Motor Vehicle Commissions (MVCs) across New Jersey following an early-morning government shutdown stemming from the state budget impasse. At midnight on June 30, Gov. Chris Christie ordered the closure of all nonessential services after the state Legislature failed to pass a budget by the deadline. MVC agencies and state parks were among the shuttered services. Those looking to register cars, renew licenses and return plates were locked out of offices and registration stations around the state. In Edison, “closed” signs were posted on the MVC agency’s glass doors with a photo of Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-Hudson) that read “This Facility is CLOSED Because of this Man” along with the speaker’s office phone number beneath the text. A handful of people surrounded the posters, snapping photos on cellphones.

The state shut down after Prieto declined to put a Bill to vote in the Assembly that would restructure Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.

State Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-Gloucester) refuses to pass a budget in the upper chamber unless the Assembly passes the Horizon bill.

Airport official pleads guilty to taking bribes BY A STAFF WRITER AN FRANCISCO, CA -- A supervisor screener who used to work at San Francisco International Airport pleaded guilty to receiving a bribe and turning a blind eye as 50 pounds of cocaine went through his X-ray machine. Joseph Scott pleaded guilty to receiving a bribe as a public official. According to court documents, Scott accepted a bribe of up to $4,500. Bobby Napier, the man who bribed Scott, was sentenced last week to four years. According to the US attorney, Napier

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace has announced that Senior Fellow Milan Vaishnav will serve as the director of the South Asia Program in Washington. “This is a critical moment in the internal and external trajectory of South Asia,” said the Indian American in a statement on June 28. “I am excited about what my colleagues and I can accomplish together and honored to take on this new role at an institution I care so much about.” Vaishnav is the author of the acclaimed new book, “When Crime Pays: Money and Muscle in Indian Politics,” published by Yale University Press and HarperCollins India, as well as the co-editor of the recent “Rethinking Public Institutions in India” published by Oxford University Press. The new director is an expert on India’s political economy and examines issues such as corruption, ethnic politics, governance and state capacity, election finance and voter behavior, according to a Carnegie Endowment news release. Vaishnav joined Carnegie in 2012 after serving as a post-doctoral fellow at the Center for Global Development. He holds a doctorate and master’s, both in political science, from Columbia University, as well as his bachelor’s in international relations from

admitted he agreed to smuggling cocaine and marijuana through security at San Francisco International Airport for several years by paying

BY A STAFF WRITER ROOKLYN, NY – The police in New York are holding out hope that a tattoo of a Sanskrit word on a dismembered woman found off a Brooklyn shoreline will help them identify the deceased. Parts of the dismembered body were found on June 28 off the shoreline, the police said. The woman is believed to be Indian, Hispanic, or black and between 25- and 35-years-old. The tattoo, found on the right hip of the victim, translates to “Lily” or “Lilyann”. The police found it after the decomposed lower torso was pulled out of the Red Hook Channel after a couple walking a dog discovered it floating in the water. Her head, chest, lower legs and arms, however, remain missing.

Indian man stabs cousin to death

BY A STAFF WRITER UEENS, NY -- A Queens man stabbed his cousin to death at their home early on June 26, and then confessed to the crime when cops showed up. “The perpetrator made a statement to police,” Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said. “I’m guilty, I’m the one who killed him,” Boyce quoted Lovedeep Singh, 24, as saying. Singh was arraigned on murder and weapon possession charges and ordered held without bail. Boyce said Singh argued with the 26-year-old victim inside a Richmond Hill home on 117th St., near 91st Ave. The men were roommates. Family members identified the slain man as Sharanjit Singh. “We were good friends, and I’ve known him personally for a long time,” said Barjinder Singh, whose brother-in-law is the victim’s cousin. Sharanjit Singh, a livery car driver, moved to the US from India in 2013, he

said. His parents still live in India. Sharanjit Singh and Lovedeep Singh were “good friends,” he said, adding that he knew nothing about the motive. A third cousin living in the home awoke to find Sharanjit Singh stabbed, then called 911 “and tried to apply pressure on his wound,” Barjinder Singh said. The police responded to a 2:27 am 911 call and found the victim had been stabbed in the armpit and shoulder. He was taken to Jamaica Hospital, but he could not be saved.

3 hurt as train derails near 125th Street BY A STAFF WRITER ANHATTAN, NY -- Three people were hurt and dozens evacuated after a southbound A train derailed near 125th Street, tearing one of the doors off the car. Commuter Skip Suva, 28, was riding on a southbound A train approaching 125th Street just before 10 am when he said “the train started shaking insanely violently, the lights started flickering. I was leaning against the left door, on the left side of the train, and the right door was ripped open.” “It was really dark, tons of smoke and dust, and white chunky things,” he said. “There was a lot of distortion on the floor. The metal was pushed in, and either the door was jammed... or it was totally pulled off, like, opened like a book.” Carrie Courogen, of Washington Heights, said “we were going fast and all of a sudden I felt this big bump, like it went up in the air and rocked side to side in the air, off the tracks. I flew up onto my seat and onto the ground. It came to a screeching halt. We saw sparks. It smelled

M

so bad, like burnt rubber.” Courougen said riders were desperate to escape and several people tried to open windows or doors to get out during a harrowing period with no information from the conductor as smoke built up in the car. The MTA blamed a power outage, but didn’t provide further details. They refused to confirm whether a train had derailed for nearly an hour, saying only that a “subway incident”

had elapsed. They finally confirmed a derailment shortly before 11 am. All A, D, and E trains were suspended between Jay St. Metrotech and 207th Street and the C train was completely suspended in both directions. FDNY officials said they were called to the scene by a report of a smoke condition at West 125th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue about 9:48 am, a spokesman said.

UPCOMING EVENTS in the East Coast area

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- An economist of Bangladeshi origin, working in the United Nations (UN), was arrested on June 20 on charges of fraud and theft in connection with the hiring of a domestic worker. Hamidur Rashid, 50, an economist working at the UN Secretariat in the Development Policy and Analysis Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, was charged on multiple counts. Rashid is charged with one count of visa fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison; one count of access device fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison; one count of aggravated identity theft, which carries a mandatory sentence of two years in prison; and one count of fraud in foreign labor contracting, which carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison. “Domestic workers brought to our country from abroad find themselves in a vulnerable position, far from home and facing a huge power imbalance relative to their employers,” Acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim is quoted saying in a press release. Kim accused Rashid of allegedly taking “cruel advantage of his position of power, grossly overworking his domestic worker while paying her well below the wage he reported to the State Department and to the UN.” The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Rashid also allegedly obtained the visa for his domestic worker through lies about the wages he intended to pay her, and once she was brought here, he allegedly set up a sham bank account to spend for himself the wages he purported to pay her. His domestic help worked at his home from January 2013 to October 2013, during which time, the workload far exceeded the 40 hours.
