Ingredients:

½ cup browntop millet (soaked overnight) ½ cup moong dal (yellow lentil soaked overnight) 1 onion, finely chopped 1 tomato finely chopped ½ cup steamed pumpkin ½ cup chopped cluster beans 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera) ¼ tsp methi seeds (fenugreek seeds) ¼ tsp asafoetida (heeng) ½ tsp Kashmiri red chili powder ½ tsp turmeric powder 1 tsp cow ghee 3 cups water Rock salt to taste

overnight. Please note soaking helps to remove phylates, oxalates and goitrogens from the grains. In a deep pan, add cow ghee and allow it to warm up. Add asafoetida, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds and as they splutter, add chopped onion. Saute until they are soft and translucent. Add chopped tomatoes, steamed pumpkin chunks, chopped cluster beans followed by rock salt and turmeric. Cook them covered until soft. At this stage, you can add washed and drained browntop millet and moong dal followed by red chilli powder. Continue to saute for another 2-3 minutes till the spices mix with the grains. Add 3 cups of water, mix and cover it on low flame and cook till the grains are tender and mashable. It will take around 12-15 minutes. Once done, turn off the heat. Allow it rest for minimum 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, give your browntop millet khichdi a good stir. Check for salt and adjust spices as per your taste. Serve with a little more ghee on top. Pair it with any pickle, chutney, papadums or just plain yogurt.

HiIndia Newsdesk Conor McGregor might have retired but a rematch with Floyd Mayweather might just be on the cards. Now fans might think with the Irishman retired, how would this fight occur but it must be noted here that retirements don’t actually mean much in terms of finality. In 2016, McGregor had announced his first retirement and then come back to the ring. Once again he returned from his second retirement, which he announced in 2019, with a decisive one-round TKO victory over Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at UFC 246. He had also said that he planned to be active throughout 2020. Elsewhere, it looked like UFC president White Dana and along with Mayweather were going to work together and promote some fights. But with age not on Mayweather’s side a comeback seemed in doubt. But according to White, he does want to comeback. “Floyd and I still have dialog and go back and forth. We’re still interested on both sides,” he told TMZ. “I know he would rematch Conor McGregor. But I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Conor McGregor is retired.”

chairman Ehsan Mani HiIndia Newsdesk All is well between India and Pakistan at the International Cricket Council (ICC), Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ehsan Mani has asserted. “There was absolutely no rift between PCB and BCCI at the Directors meeting. The two-thirds or simple majority was not discussed at all,” Mani confirmed. The ICC Board met on Monday with an eye to finalise the election procedure and timeline for the next ICC chair. The position has fallen vacant after Shashank Manohar stepped down on June 30. At the moment, the global body’s deputy chairman Imran Khwaja is assuming the responsibilities of the chairperson until Manohar’s successor is elected. The Board meeting yesterday, it is learnt, discussed about the election process but didn’t take any decision. This paper understands that the ICC Board comprising 18 members – chief executive Manu Sawhney doesn’t have a vote – is aiming to pick the next independent chair based on consensus. A BCCI official, too, insisted that there was no falling out between India and Pakistan at the global body.

TikTok and its employees prepare We’re feeling seen for first time: US Indians to fight Trump over app ban

The employees’ legal challenge to Trump’s executive order will be separate from a pending lawsuit from the company that owns the app, though both will argue that the order is unconstitutional, said Mike Godwin, an internet policy lawyer representing the employees.

HiIndia Newsdesk i k To k a n d i t s U S employees are planning to take President Donald Trump’s administration to court over his sweeping order to ban the popular video app, according to a lawyer preparing one of the lawsuits. The employees’ legal challenge to Trump’s executive order will be separate from a pending lawsuit from the company that owns the app, though both will argue that the order is unconstitutional,

said Mike Godwin, an internet policy lawyer representing the employees. Trump last week ordered sweeping but vague bans on dealings with the Chinese owners of TikTok and messaging app WeChat, saying they are a threat to US national security, foreign policy and the economy. The TikTok order would take effect in September, but it remains unclear what it will mean for the apps’ 100 million US users, many of them teenagers or young adults who use it to post and watch shortform videos.

HiIndia Newsdesk Shortly after former Vice-President Joseph. R. Biden Jr selected Senator Kamala Harris of California as his running mate, Neil Makhija’s father sent him a photo. It was of Harris, sitting with her family in traditional Indian dress, a bindi on her forehead and a raspberry-coloured sari wrapped around her. The image could have come from his own family album, he said, and made clear that for the first time, a candidate for one of US’s highest offices looked like him. “Spending time in India, growing up where nobody in our neighbourhood really understood us — or maybe t h e y k i n d of noticed my mother’s accent, or didn’t take her as seriously — those are experiences that Kamala Harris understands,” said Ma k hij a, now t he executive director of the Indian American Impact Fund. “I think we’re feeling seen for the first time,” he added.

Biden, Harris vow a way out of crisis

Democratic presidential candidate former Vice President Joe Biden and his running mate Senator Kamala Harris arrive to speak at a news conference at Alexis Dupont High School in Wilmington, Wednesday, August 12, 2020.

HiIndia Newsdesk Joseph R. Biden Jr and Senator Kamala Harris made their debut as running mates in a high school gymnasium on Wednesday, pledging to lead the country out of the coronavirus crisis amid an onslaught of attacks from President Trump as the two national tickets went head-tohead for the first time, less than three months before Election Day. The first full day for the newly announced Democratic presidential ticket offered a glimpse of how two once-bitter rivals from opposite coasts and

different generations will try to unite Americans around their platform. Projecting warmth towards each other, they sketched out a vision of recovery from the nation’s crises surrounding public health, the economy and racial injustice — challenges that, they argued, Trump has made worse at every turn with an extraordinarily divisive presidency. “We need more than a victory on November 3,” Harris said. “We need a mandate that proves that the past few years do not represent who we are or who we aspire to be.”

Donald Trump admits he’s blocking postal cash to stop mail-in votes Trump's statements, including the false claim that Democrats are seeking universal mail-in voting, come as he is searching for a strategy to gain an advantage in his November matchup against Joe Biden. HiIndia Newsdesk

President Donald Trump frankly acknowledged Thursday that he’s starving the U.S. Postal Service of money in order to make it harder to process an expected surge of mail-in ballots, which he worries could cost him the election. In an interview Trump explicitly noted two funding provisions that Democrats are seeking in a relief package that has stalled on Capitol Hill. Without the additional money, he said, the Postal Service won’t have the resources to handle a flood of ballots from voters who are seeking to avoid polling places during the coronavirus pandemic. “If we don’t make a deal, that

means they don’t get the money,” Trump told host Maria Bartiromo. “That means they can’t have universal mail-in voting; they just can’t have it.” Trump’s statements, including the false claim that Democrats are seeking universal mail-in voting, come as he is searching for a strategy to gain an advantage in his November matchup against Joe Biden. He’s pairing the tough Postal Service stance in congressional negotiations with an increasingly robust mail-in-voting legal fight in states that could decide the election. In Iowa, which Trump won handily

in 2016 but is more competitive this year, his campaign joined a lawsuit Wednesday against two Democratic-leaning counties in an effort to invalidate tens of thousands of voters’ absentee ballot applications. That followed legal maneuvers in battleground Pennsylvania, where the campaign hopes to force changes to how the state collects and counts mail-in ballots. And in Nevada, Trump is challenging a law sending ballots to all active voters. For Democrats, Trump’s new remarks were a clear admission that the president is attempting to restrict voting rights.

Arrest of Hong Kong’s Jimmy Lai ‘a terrible thing’, says Trump Lai, a staunch supporter of the city’s democracy movement, was arrested on Monday on suspicion of collusion with foreign forces as police raided the offices of his Apple Daily tabloid. HiIndia Newsdesk US President Donald Trump on Thursday criticized the arrest of Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai this week under China’s new national security law. “I think it’s a terrible thing,” Trump told reporters in response to a question about Lai’s arrest. Lai, a staunch supporter of the city’s democracy movement, was arrested on Monday on suspicion of collusion with foreign forces as police raided the offices of his Apple Daily tabloid. He was released on bail early on Wednesday, and greeted by a throng of supporters chanting “fight till the end”.

Strongest warrior sent to border, says Pilot on seat change in Assembly Parliamentary Affair Minister Shanti Dhariwal blamed the Centre for trying to "topple" the governments in Madhya Pradesh, Manipur and Goa, using money and power, but said a similar attempt in Rajasthan would not succeed. HiIndia Newsdesk The Congress government led by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot moved a confidence motion as the special sitting of the State Legislative Assembly began on Friday. Replying to the debate on the motion, Parliamentary Affair Minister Shanti Dhariwal blamed the Centre for trying to “topple” the governments in Madhya Pradesh, Manipur and Goa, using money and power, but said a similar attempt in Rajasthan would not succeed. Gehlot has the support of at least 107 MLAs in the 200-member House, while Opposition BJP has 72. Earlier in the day, Gehlot said it would be “a victory of truth” during the assembly session. “As the Legislative Assembly session begins today, It would be the victory of the people of Rajasthan and the unity of our Congress MLAs, it would be a victory of truth: Satyamev Jayate,” he tweeted. A Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting, chaired by Gehlot, was held Thursday to decide a strategy for the session. After nearly a month-long political crisis, the meeting was attended by former deputy CM Sachin Pilot, who had failed to topple his party’s government. Gehlot said he would have been able to prove his majority without the support from the 19 rebel MLAs, but “it wouldn’t have made us happy”.

Prashant Bhushan guilty of contempt: SC

A bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra said the court will hear the arguments on the quantum of punishment on August 20.

HiIndia Newsdesk The Supreme Court on Friday held advocate Prashant Bhushan guilty of contempt in a case registered against him over two of his tweets. A bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra said the court will hear the arguments on the quantum of punishment on August 20. The senior lawyer can be punished with a simple imprisonment for a term which may extend up to six months or with a fine of up to Rs 2,000 or with both. On June 29, Bhushan had tweeted on a photo of Chief Justice of India SA Bobde astride a Harley Davidson motorcycle. While taking up the matter for hearing, the bench, which also comprised of Justice B R Gavai and Krishna Murari, took note of another tweet by the advocate on June 27 regarding the judiciary which it said was published in The Times of India. On August 5, the top court had reserved its verdict in the matter after Bhushan had defended his posts on the microblogging site. The lawyer said the posts were against the judges regarding

their conduct in their personal capacity and they did not obstruct administration of justice. Read in Bangla and Malayalam here. On July 22, the top court issued a show cause notice to the lawyer after initiating the criminal contempt against him, saying that the tweets had “brought the administration of justice in disrepute”.

HiIndia Newsdesk Nearly two months after China’s People’s Liberation Army assault teams attacked troops of the 16 Bihar Regiment killing 20 soldiers, Chinese ambassador to India, Sun Weidong, has said that the “onus is not on China” for the June 15 Galwan Valley incident. The Chinese envoy penned his opinion in China-India review, a Chinese embassy’s magazine that is published in Delhi. “If one analyses this incident carefully, it’s quite clear that the onus is not on China. The Indian side crossed the LAC for provocation and attacked the Chinese border troops. The Indian forces seriously violated agreements on border issues between the two countries and severely violated basic norms governing international relations,” Weidong wrote in the magazine. India’s tally crosses 24 lakh; record single-day testing in Bengal, Bihar

HiIndia Newsdesk With an addition of 64,553 coronavirus cases, India’s caseload breached the 24 lakh mark and its death toll topped 48,000 fatalities. India has added 4 lakh additional cases in a week’s time after crossing the 20 lakh mark on August 7. The total tally today stands at 24,61,190 along with 48,040 fatalities. Over 17 lakh people

have recovered after testing positive and the country’s recovery rate has surged to 71.70 while the fatality rate has declined to 1.95 per cent. More than 1,000 people succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours. Currently, 26.88 per cent of the total cases or over 6.60 lakh people are still undergoing treatment. As cases continue to rise in Mizoram, the state government Thursday issued additional standard operating procedure (SOP) to be followed in order to strengthen the existing measures of social distancing. The order issued after a meeting chaired by CM Zoramthanga states caps the number of people in gatherings like marriages, funerals etc to 50. Old persons and people with co-morbidities are prohibited from attending funerals, the order said.

The FDA inspection found several other discrepancies in the laboratory testing and other practices at Windlas Healthcare, such as failure to establish an adequate quality control unit. unapproved and misbranded products claiming to mitigate, prevent, treat or cure Covid-19. The first warning was issued by the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research in March to Uttarakhand-based Windlas Healthcare. The letter summarised “significant violations of CGMP regulations for finished pharmaceuticals” at the company’s facility in Dehradun, based on an inspection by the FDA. The inspection found that the firm did not maintain complete and accurate data from all laboratory testing. For instance, investigators found that while residual solvent testing of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) used to make multiple batches of tablets released to the US market, there were some “unknown impurity peaks” which were not reported as per procedure.

Kamala Harris is Joe Biden’s historymaking pick for vice president

“I need someone working alongside me who is smart, tough, and ready to lead. Kamala is that person,” Biden wrote in an email

Joe Biden has named his onetime rival Kamala Harris as his running mate, the campaign revealed Tuesday, elevating California’s junior senator as the first woman of color to appear on a major party’s presidential ticket. Har r is, w ho centered her unsuccessful White House bid last year on a promise to “pros e c ute the case” against President Trump, was widely seen as a front-runner to be Biden’s vice presidential pick.

With her statewide experience as California attorney general and four years in the U.S. Senate, Harris was among the most conventionally qualified of the half-dozen or so women under consideration in the most diverse crop of contenders ever. “I need someone working alongside me who is smart, tough, and ready to lead. Kamala is that person,” Biden wrote in an email to supporters Tuesday afternoon. The pair are scheduled to appear together for the first time as a presidential ticket in Wilmington, Del., on Wednesday. In many ways, Harris, 55, is a safe pick — broadly popular in the Democratic Party and well acquainted with the rigors of a national campaign. But her selection also carries symbolic heft in this moment when race relations are at top of mind for voters,

particularly since Harris, who is of Indian and Jamaican descent, had her own highly publicized confrontation with Biden over race during the primary. “Joe Biden can unify the American people because he’s spent his life fighting for us. And as president, he’ll build an America that lives up to our ideals,” Harris tweeted. “I’m honored to join him as our party’s nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief.”

India to strengthen bridge with Maldives Israel and UAE strike historic deal to normalise relations Israel and the United Arab Emirates have reached a deal to normalise relations, with Israel agreeing to suspend its controversial plans to annex parts of the occupied West Bank.

India will support the implementation of the GMCP through a financial package consisting of a grant of $100 million and a new line of credit of $400 million.

The Greater Male Connectivity Bridge implementation supported by India through a financial package will dwarf the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge HiIndia Newsdesk India on Thursday announced its decision to invest in the biggest infrastructure project of the Maldives — a bridge that seeks to connect the archipelago’s capital with three neighbouring islands, including a new industrial zone, and is thrice the size of a similar structure built by the Chinese. While India’s participation in the Greater Male Connectivity Bridge (GMCB) had been in the works for some time now, the formal announcement was made on Thursday during a videoconference between external affairs minister S. Jaishankar and his Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Shahid. Hailing the announcement, Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih tweeted: “A landmark moment in Maldives-India cooperation today as we receive Indian assistance of $250 million as budget support and $500 million for the Greater Male Connectivity Project. I thank PM @narendramodi and the Indian people for their generosity and friendship.”

What has been agreed?

In the coming weeks delegations from Israel and the UAE will meet to sign bilateral deals regarding investment, tourism, direct flights, security, telecommunications, technology, energy, healthcare, culture, the environment, the establishment of reciprocal embassies, and other areas of mutual benefit. "Opening direct ties between two of the Middle East's most dynamic societies and advanced economies will transform the region by spurring economic growth, enhancing technological innovation, and forging closer peopleto-people relations," the joint statement says. Israel will also "suspend declaring sovereignty over areas outlined" in President Trump's Vision for Peace between Israel and the Palestinians, in which he backed an Israeli plan to annex Jewish settlements in the West Bank and the strategic Jordan Valley.

n a surprise statement by US President Donald Trump, who helped broker it, the countries called the accord "historic" and a breakthrough toward peace. Until now Israel has had no diplomatic relations with Gulf Arab countries. But shared worries over Iran have led to unofficial contacts between them. Palestinian leaders were reportedly taken by surprise. A spokesman for President Mahmoud Abbas said the deal amounted to "treason", and the Palestinian ambassador to the UAE was being recalled. President Trump called the deal between Prime Minister Netanyahu and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed Al Nahyan "a truly historic moment". It marks only the third Israel-Arab peace deal since Israel's declaration of independence in 1948, after Egypt and Jordan."Now that the ice has been broken I expect more Arab and Muslim countries will follow the United Arab Emirates," he told reporters in the Oval Office, saying there would be a signing ceremony at the White House in the coming weeks. Earlier, in response to a President Trump's tweeted announcement, Mr Netanyahu wrote in Hebrew: "Historic day." Mr Netanyahu said he had "delayed" West Bank annexation plans, but those plans remain "on the table". Annexation would make some West Bank areas officially part of Israel. "There is no change in my plan to apply our sovereignty to Judea and Samaria [West Bank] in full co-ordination with the US. I'm committed to it. That hasn't changed. I remind you that I was the one who put the issue of sovereignty over Judea and Samaria on the table.

Hesitant to use force against all-women rallies, police dispersed them without violence. But in recent nights, authorities have responded with a level of brutality remarkable even during Lukashenko’s rule.

The actor on Tuesday took to Twitter to share how excited she is to present the book whose every word “comes from a place of introspection and reflection” into her life. “Unfinished is finished! Just about sent in the final manuscript! Wheee! Cannot wait to share it with you all. The announcement about the book was made two years ago by the publication house Penguin Random House India. Talking about the book, the Quantico star had then shared, “The flavour of the book will be honest, funny, spirited, bold and rebellious, just like me. I have always been a private person. I have never spoken about my feelings during my journey, but I am ready to do so now.” Priyanka had also once posted a picture that looked like the cover of her book. idyut Jammwal has been entertaining netizens through his trending segment #AbYeKarkeDikhao and a chat show titled X-Rayed By Vidyut. The actor has more in store for viewers, as his upcoming movies, Khuda Haafiz and Yaara are about to stream soon. The trailers of both these films were recently released and social media is now abuzz with the actor's high octane action sequences and his charm as a romantic hero. While both the movies will show Jammwal in his element, a source reveals the grind that he undertakes to be able to pull off stunts and combat sequences without a body double. According to the source, "Vidyut trains for his stunts a month prior to shooting any action film he signs and he works with the most celebrated action directors. In the case of Khuda Haafiz, it is Andy Long, who has worked with legends such as Jackie Chan, Scott Adkins and many others. Jammwal is also the only Indian actor to feature alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and Bear Grylls of the Man Vs Wild fame on the list of '10 People You Don't Want To Mess With' by The Richest. One of the top ten martial artists of the world, the action star earned a spot on this wicked list of the deadliest fighters. The sad details of how Sanjay Dutt learnt he has lung cancer

Sanjay was accompanied by his sister Priya Dutt and a friend. Upon reaching the hospital, it was detected that air entry was not happening from his right lung. A CT scan further revealed that there was fluid accumulation in his right lung accompanied by two lesions, one on each lung. Sanjay was told that it could be a bacterial infection, tuberculosis, an adverse effect of strenuous exercise wherein he might have hurt himself, or cancer. The fluid was removed, the volume was as high as 1.5 litres. A 2-day hospitalisation followed. Sanju kept asking a lot of questions especially when he was told that the extracted fluid was about to be sent for detailed diagnosis." "The actor was then told that he would have to undergo a PET scan. And just as the PET scan was nearing completion, the histopathology department had found that the fluid had cancer cells. The PET scan also confirmed cancer. A counselling session was immediately held and Sanjay was told about his ailment. Thereafter, Sanjay was sent to an oncologist who gave him a detailed explanation of the Plan Of Action. He was given the option to go wherever he wants just in case he wants to get it treated abroad. Chemotherapy is the only line of treatment, no surgery can be done at this juncture in this case. It's Stage 4 and depending on the medicines, the treatment (chemotherapy) will be broken down into a certain number of cycles."

She favours XXL white shirts with them, but not without clever styling hacks to update the look every single time—like the time she wore her Zara jeans with a white Jacquemus shirt layered with a sheer Dolce & Gabbana corset. Or when she arrived at the Cannes Film Festival last year in a denim suit worn with, yet again, an oversized white shirt. Athleisure, but make it pretty: the star did just that when she wore her high waisted flared jeans with a balloony white top by Esha Sethi Thirani, metallic sneakers and gold jewellery. For a desk to dinner look, borrow from the Padmaavat actor’s combination of mom jeans and a one-shoulder white shirt. The high ponytail, mega hoops and red pumps can make the look more PM-friendly. When in the mood to dial it down, Padukone keeps it really basic.

Padukone’s preference, in contrast, is for baggy looks. Skinny jeans? Not so much her jam. She’s more about straight legs, mom jeans and high waist numbers in lighter washes.

‘He thought of all Tasty the arts as related’ browntop millet porridge Ebrahim Alkazi Ingredients:

½ cup browntop millet (soaked overnight) ½ cup moong dal (yellow lentil soaked overnight) 1 onion, finely chopped 1 tomato finely chopped ½ cup steamed pumpkin ½ cup chopped cluster beans 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera) ¼ tsp methi seeds (fenugreek seeds) ¼ tsp asafoetida (heeng) ½ tsp Kashmiri red chili powder ½ tsp turmeric powder 1 tsp cow ghee 3 cups water Rock salt to taste

Method:

Measure millet and lentil and wash and soak them separately for 6-8 hours or

A pivotal builder of modern Indian culture, Ebrahim Alkazi nurtured young artists and straddled multiple media from visual arts to photography

Artist Arpita Singh vividly recalls when she first met Roshen and Ebrahim Alkazi in the early ’70s, after the couple saw one of her paintings and expressed interest in her work. “No one really bought art back then but when they showed such keen interest in my work, it was extremely encouraging,” says Singh. The Alkazis hosted her first solo in 1972 at Kunika Chemould Gallery in Delhi and remained patrons of Singh’s work. Credited for revolutionizing theatre in India, Ebrahim Alkazi was also the doyen of Indian art who helped bring modernism in post-colonial India, and was one of the first supporters of several Indian artists such as Nasreen Mohamedi, A Ramachandran, Sudhir Patwardhan and Bharti Kher.

‘Floyd Mayweather would rematch Conor McGregor’

Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja criticised the current Pakistan team after losing to England in the first Test in Manchester last week. Pakistan team led by Azhar Ali looked dominant at one stage

after they took 107-run lead in the first innings. But a batting collapse in the second innings, followed by fifties from England’s Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler turned the tides towards England in the match, and Pakistan lost the encounter by three wickets. Mind you Buttler was playing for his position in the XI,” Raja added. “Pakistan were little confused during that partnership. This has been happening with Pakistan quite often unfortunately. It was a superb partnership no doubt but why did Pakistan allow it? There is a reason their ranking is low in Tests (No 7),” he further said.

With the women’s T20 Challenge approaching, Mandhana said she is excited for the return of live cricket and is looking forward to travel to UAE, the venue of the tournament, and be a part of it. The first month was a bit tough since I didn’t have the habit of staying at home. But gradually adjusted by working out at home with the equipment available. In the last one month I have started batting. It was tough but also special that I got to spend time with my family. No rift between BCCI and us, says PCB chairman Ehsan Mani HiIndia Newsdesk All is well between India and Pakistan at the International Cricket Council (ICC), Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ehsan Mani has asserted. Murthy said, “The house which was constructed is my wife’s plan and it was her dream to construct a house. But unfortunately, she passed away in a car accident.” “Madhavi was involved in the planning of the new house. After three years, I was missing her during the housewarming ceremony. Hence I thought her presence is important to our family and this house,” he added. To make her presence felt, Murthy visited various photo studios to get her photo framed for the new house. But

Nreal’s augmented reality glasses are shipping this month in Korea

The Nreal Light (also referred to as “U+ Real Glass”) is a light sunglasses-style headset that tethers to a separate computing device — in this case, the Galaxy Note 20. It uses spatial tracking and projected images to overlay apps onto the real world, and Nreal pitches it as a more spacious alternative to a smartphone when you’re watching videos, playing games, or reading websites. It’s promising to support Chrome, Facebook, and Instagram, among other apps, at launch. The consumer retail version comes with an array of nose clips to fit different faces, as well as a corrective lens insert and a black “VR cover” that blocks your outside vision to create a clearer picture. Nreal previously shipped a $1,199 developer kit that included a controller and a dedicated mini-computer. The consumer version of the glasses will use a phonebased control system, and Nreal announced that it would bring hand tracking to the

Mobile game controllers without buttons are monstrosities

Anker’s PowerCore Play 6K controller is essentially a $36 6,700mAh power bank that’s molded into the shape of a controller grip. Look all you want and you won’t find a single button. But Anker, having gotten its start making affordable power banks, leans in on the battery side of things, so you don’t have to worry about running low while you game. That 6,700mAh of extra juice should give your phone two to three refills’ worth of charge, and it supports up to 15W output to Android phones via its USB-C port and up to 12W to iPhones or any other device you’d want to charge with its USB-A port. Given that playing games can make your phone run hot, it has a built-in fan to pull the heat away. That’s neat, but I think I’d like some buttons please.

glasses at some point as well. Nreal is one of only a few companies still trying to sell general-purpose consumer smart glasses. Competitor Magic Leap — which sued Nreal for “blatant copying” before having the suit dismissed in June — recently switched its focus to enterprise mixed reality. Google acquired the startup North and recently dropped support for the consumer glasses North launched in 2019. Augmented reality company Tilt Five is apparently still preparing to launch a pair of holographic glasses, but they’re specifically made for tabletop gaming.

Most of the improvements on the iMac bring it up to the specs you’d expect in a 2020 computer: 10th Gen Intel processors, SSDs standard, and so on. My unit also has Apple’s $500 nano texture finish on the glass, which Apple says is a big improvement over traditional matte displays. (For $500, it had better be.) But there’s one spec bump that is wildly out of character for Apple, even in this pandemic year: the quality of the webcam has finally been improved. If you’re videoconferencing a lot, the new 1080p webcam is likely going to be the thing that improves your day-today the most. I hate to tell you this, but you really do look more professional to your colleagues when your camera is just a little sharper. The webcam isn’t just better because it has more pixels; it’s also better because Apple is finally applying some modern image processing to the video stream. The iMac has a T2 chip, which is used to control lots of the components in the Mac. Apple is using it to process certain elements of this webcam’s image. It is able to do tone mapping, exposure control, and face detection. The other big upgrade is that nano texture option. It is great, but I have some reservations. Apple is literally etching the glass at a nanometer scale. That process gives the nano texture finish a leg up on traditional matte screens in that images won’t look fuzzified. On matte screens, the light from the pixels gets scattered out. Apple’s finish, the company claims, mainly diffuses the light that hits from the outside and doesn’t scatter the light from the pixels as much. Apple has given every indication that it will fully support Intel-based Macs for a long time, and I have every hope that the programs and apps you need will continue to be compatible with Intel-based Macs for a long time as well.

Changing the way one talks to self affects the mental well-being and one’s perception of self. According to the Los Angeles Times, replacing negative self-talk with an optimistic approach and viewing the setbacks as temporary is an effective way to deal with stress. 5. Focusing on things that one has and being grateful is a great way of driving away negativity. According to the Los Angeles Times, psychology professor, Barbara Fredrickson from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill states that one needs three positive events for one negative event to be on the positive side. Besides the abovementioned techniques, another effective way to deal with mental issues during the coronavirus pandemic is to seek professional help.

“Food that is cooked more than 2 hours back should be avoided as this isn’t healthy for the body. Avoid processed food, sugary snacks and drinks, excessive alcohol, smoking and drugs. Japan has more centenarians than almost any other nation on earth. Steal these 6 secrets to a longer, healthier life. 1. Eat some seaweed

The Japanese diet is filled with many nutritious plant foods, but seaweed is a standout. There are many different forms of this Japanese staple and while they vary in the amount of nutrients they supply, most marine plants are packed with minerals, such as iodine, copper and iron, along with antioxidants, protein, fiber and beneficial omega-3 fats (which are also found in fish).

2. Stock up on seafood

One thing that makes the Japanese diet so healthy is its focus on seafood. Japan has among the world’s lowest levels of heart disease and middle-aged Japanese men, compared to their white American counterparts, have much less cholesterol build up in their arteries, which is attributed to their high seafood consumption.

6 healthy habits from the Japanese 3. Drink green tea

Green tea is arguably one of the healthiest beverages and drinking it is a daily habit in Japan. Green tea is rich in polyphenol antioxidants that reduce inflammation, protect cells from the type of damage that can promote chronic diseases, and that feed the friendly bacteria in your gut, where the majority of your immune cells and moodboosting neurochemicals are produced.

4. Eat until you're almost full

There’s a saying in Japan — hara hachi bu — which means to eat until you’re 80% full. With this mindset, you eat until you’re comfortable, but you still have room in your stomach. In essence, it’s a form of mindful eating and it makes it possible to eat enough to meet your body’s needs without overdoing it.

5. Practice some forest bathing

In Japan, the practice of shinrinyoku, which translates to forest bathing or taking in the forest atmosphere, is a form of nature therapy. Rather than heading outdoors for a walk or run, this practice is more about mindfulness and tuning into the natural setting. When you’re in nature, you use all of your senses, for example, by feeling the wind or sun on your skin, seeing all the shades of green in the grass and trees and hearing the leaves bristle. When you use your senses to tune into nature, it enables your mind and body to relax, much like they do during meditation. One

study on forest bathing found that when compared to being in a city setting, being in a forest setting was linked with lower blood pressure, lower concentrations of the stress hormone, cortisol and an increase in parasympathetic nervous system activity, which are all indicative of feeling more calm.

Fibre-rich food can cut diabetes risk

LONDON: Regularly consuming a Western-type diet, which is high in fats and sugars but low in fiber, may increase the risk of inflammatory bowel diseases, weight gain, as well as diabetes, according to a study published in the journal Cell Host and Microbe. The findings showed that fiber — found in fruits, legumes, vegetables and whole grains — matters in a healthy diet. 100K Remain Without Power After Tropical Storm Isaias Passed Through NYC BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY — Tropical Storm Isaias passed through New York City in a matter of hours, but it could take days for some city dwellers to get their power back. Roughly 100,000 Con Edison customers in New York City remained without power Wednesday morning. An outage map for customers gives the same estimated time of restoration: “evaluating condition.” The power company told customers in a statement that they could be in for a long wait. “The company has already restored service to more than 48,000 customers,” ConEd wrote in the statement. “But it is clear the restoration of all customers will take multiple days.” #StormIsaias’s outage is the second largest in our long history. Service to investigate.“The large volume of outages and the utilities’ failure to communicate with customers in real time proves they did not live up to their legal obligations,” Cuomo said. “The fact that many customers still do not know when their power will be restored makes it even more unacceptable.” About 257,000 Con Edison customers lost power in the storm — the second-largest “storm-related” outage in its history, only behind the 1.1 million left powerless by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, according to the company.

Queens, with 45,000, had the most customers without power on Tuesday, according to the company. Brooklyn and the Bronx had 16,000 and 23,000 customers, respectively. But it was Staten Island that suffered the biggest proportion of customers without power. Soon after the storm passed, about 20 percent of Staten Island customers were without power. Staten Island had 29,000 customers without power on Tuesday, although the company quickly shaved that number down to 21,000 the following morning.

Long Island Car Parade Maybe the Biggest India Day Celebration in USA BY A STAFF WRITER HICKSVILLE, NY: Even as the better known India Day celebrations in America have been forced by Covid-19 to downsize this year to just tricolor flag hoistings, Long Island’s IDP USA is all set to hold a Car Parade on August 15 in Hicksville, NY. Over 150 cars are expected to form the cavalcade starting from Patel Brothers on South Broadway at 4 p.m., where dignitaries such as Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joe Saladino, State Senator Kevin Thomas, Grand Marshall Raj Bhayani and IDP USA President Mukesh Modi will speak from a stage set up there. The cars displaying India and USA flags then will drive down to Apna Bazar, make a U-Turn, pass in front of Asa Mai Hindu temple, and culminate in Badshah Farmers

President Mukesh Modi says that all necessary permissions have been taken from the Town and County, and “All participants will fully comply with the guidance of health authorities; they will socially distance and wear masks. The occupants of the cars will not come out of their vehicles. Only a limited number of people will be allowed to assemble at the programs at the start and end points.” All along the parade route, some select establishments will distribute flyers on safeguards to prevent Covid. Mayor de Blasio Announces COVID-19 Checkpoints to Enforce New York State Quarantine Orders

Representative image BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY — A new checkpoint program will stop and “educate” travelers into New York City about the state’s mandatory quarantine requirements, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced. The checkpoints will begin Wednesday at major bridge and tunnel crossings into the city, de Blasio said. They will help ensure that travelers from and New Yorkers who visited 35 states with high coronavirus infection rates follow the state’s 14-day quarantine, he said. “The idea is we don’t want to penalize people, we want to educate them, we want to make sure they’re following the rules,” he said. Gov. Andrew Cuomo instituted the highrisk state quarantine — which has kept growing — as a way to stop the coronavirus’ spread back into New York from virus hot spots. The rules require travelers and New Yorkers who visited those designated states to quarantine themselves for 14 days. But while officials require airport travelers to fill out contact forms and laid down $10,000 penalties for violations, Cuomo has lamented that enforcing compliance is all but impossible. A fifth of New York City’s new coronavirus cases have come from travelers coming from other states, said Ted Long, who heads the city’s “Test and Trace” program. De Blasio’s announcement appears to be an attempt to add teeth to the quarantine rule in New York City, once the country’s coronavirus epicenter. The city’s Sheriff ’s Office will run the checkpoints, with help from other law enforcement agencies, said Sheriff Joseph Fucito. Checkpoints will be placed at varying major bridge and tunnel entry points into the city, Fucito said. He said a random selection of vehicles will be pulled over so as not to discriminate against people from other states or otherwise violate rights. “Let’s say it’s every sixth vehicle, or every eighth vehicle,” he said. “We determine something at the beginning of the day and we stick to that pattern throughout the day and that is how the checkpoint will be conducted at different locations.” Fucito said officials hope to avoid stops or locations that will affect traffic. Officers and city public outreach staff will tell travelers about the state’s quarantine rules and encourage them to fill out health forms, officials said. The city will also reach out to travelers at Penn Station starting Thursday. Long said the city’s Test and Trace program will call travelers about the quarantine and offer help with getting through the mandatory quarantine. He said they offer free food delivery, assistance getting medication, connections with doctors over the phone and even a hotel stay.

Sikh High School Senior Places 2nd in Prestigious Regeneron Science Talent Search, Other Indian Americans in Top 10 BY A STAFF WRITER G R E E N B RO O K , N J - Re g e n e ro n Pharmaceuticals and Society for Science & the Public held its annual Science Talent Search virtually July 29, with several Indian American high school seniors finishing in the top 10 and one, Jagdeep Bhatia, taking second. Bhatia finished only behind the grand prize $250,000 winner Lillian Peterson, of Los Alamos, New Mexico, in the country’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. For placing in second place, Bhatia, 18, of Green Brook, New Jersey, won $175,000. The Indian American teen was chosen as runner-up for developing two fast and simple machine learning algorithms for computer programs that are attempting to learn new concepts under the tutelage of an instructor, either a computer or human, according to a news release. His algorithms do not only ask random questions but, like a savvy detective, ask just the right ones. His AI algorithms could help train robots and other automated devices faster and easier, it said. For the first time in its 78-year history, the competition took place virtually, in order to keep finalists and their families safe during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Forty finalists were honored during a virtual award ceremony. More than $1.8 million was awarded to the finalists, who were evaluated

Jagdeep Bhatia (Society for Science photo)

based on the scientific rigor of their projects, their exceptional problem-solving abilities and their potential to become scientific leaders. In total, 10 students were chosen as winners for their work, with Rohan Wagh of Portland, Oregon, finishing ninth and Arjun Neervannan of Irvine, California, placing 10th. Wagh received a $50,000 award for his development of a bacteria-powered sensor system that can send farmers up-to-date measurements of soil moisture and nutrient conditions, which could reduce the amount of irrigation water wasted. Neervannan received a $40,000 award for his development of an AI software designed to identify hateful or toxic content, often a form of cyberbullying, online with less bias than current

programs. “Congratulations to the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2020 winners,” said Maya Ajmera, president and CEO of Society for Science & the Public, publisher of Science News and a 1985 Science Talent Search alumna. The Regeneron Science Talent Search provides a national stage for the best and brightest young minds to present their original research ideas to leading scientists. The competition celebrates the hard work and creativity of students who are using research as activism to spark conversation, effect change and lead many of society’s most pressing issues. The remaining 30 finalists each received $25,000. These students will join the ranks of other Science Talent Search alumni, many of whom have gone on to have world-changing careers in STEM fields, and some of whom have earned the most esteemed honors in science and math, including the Nobel Prize, National Medal of Science and MacArthur Foundation Fellowships. In total, Regeneron awarded $3.1 million in prizes through the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2020, including $2,000 to each of the top scholars and their schools. The Regeneron Science Talent Search, a program of Society for Science & the Public since 1942, is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors.

De Blasio Revives Layoff Warning: 22K City Workers Job are at Risk BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY — Mayor Bill de Blasio dusted off a dire warning for 22,000 New York City public employees: your jobs are at risk. “If we don’t have something else that stops it, we do plan 22,000 layoffs on Oct. 1,” he said Wednesday. “It’s a massive, painful number. It resembles the kinds of things we had to do decades ago, but the job here is to try to avert it if we can.” The layoff warning isn’t new — de Blasio brought it up repeatedly as the city grappled with a $9 billion coronavirus-related shortfall in the run up to the recently-approved budget. But de Blasio stayed relatively quiet on the layoffs as he repeatedly pressed Congress to pass a stimulus and Albany to give the city borrowing authority.

773.526.8353 MIDWEST / EASTCOAST

Mayor Bill de Blasio

His silence ended Wednesday as a reporter questioned whether his warning was “fear mongering.” “We cut the budget by billions and billions of dollars already,” de Blasio said. “I want to be very clear, the overwhelming cost of local

government is personnel.” Personnel — meaning 22,000 city employees — now face layoffs after cuts and cuts in other parts of the city budget, de Blasio said. The number of potentially is sadly real, especially now that talks of another federal stimulus in Congress have sputtered out, he said. “We’re going to Albany to ask for appropriate long-term borrowing capacity that would stave off the layoffs,” he said. “If we don’t have that, we’re going to keep working with labor looking for every solution, every kind of savings.” But once those are tapped, de Blasio warned layoffs remain on the table starting Oct. 1.

Virginia Firm “Whole Heartedly” Apologizes and Removes Lord Ganesh Skirt After Hindu Protest

Ganesh balance mini-skirt

BY A STAFF WRITER TOANO, VA- headquartered Enlighten Clothing Company (ECC) has apologized and removed “Ganesh Balance Mini Skirt” carrying images of Hindu deity Lord Ganesh, after Hindus protested calling it “highly inappropriate”. Justin Chamberlain and Melanie Bodnar, ECC founders, in an email today to Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, who spearheaded the protest, wrote: We are very sorry and whole heartedly apologize for anyone we might have upset…Our goal is to create a clothing line that is environmentally responsible and to shine a light on the shared spiritual and artistic nature of humanity not to misuse them in ways that are offensive or hurtful to the native cultures from which they came. Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, in a statement in Nevada today, thanked ECC and Chamberlain and Bodnar for understanding the concerns of Hindu community, which thought that placing images of Lord Ganesh on a miniskirt was insensitive. Rajan Zed suggested that companies like ECC should send their senior executives for training in religious and cultural sensitivity so that they had an understanding of the feelings of customers and communities when introducing new products or launching advertising campaigns. Zed had said that Lord Ganesh was highly revered in Hinduism and was meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines and not to adorn one’s hips, groin, buttocks, genitals, waist, crotch, thighs, and pelvis for mercantile purposes. Inappropriate usage of Hindu deities or concepts or symbols or icons for commercial or other agenda was not okay as it hurt the devotees. ECC should not be in the business of religious appropriation, sacrilege, and ridiculing entire communities. It was deeply trivializing of immensely venerated Hindu deity Lord Ganesh to be displayed on miniskirt, Rajan Zed had emphasized. In Hinduism, Lord Ganesh is worshipped as god of wisdom and remover of obstacles and is invoked before the beginning of any major undertaking. There are about three million Hindus in USA. Before removal, objectionable “Ganesh Balance Mini Skirt” at ECC was described as “meant to sit on hip”, and was priced at $34.99. ECC, founded in 2012, claims to be “spiritually inspired independent clothing and design company” and “devoted to creating affordable organic clothing”. It sells clothing and accessories and states to “try and create” “socially responsible clothing”; with artists in US, Mexico, Sweden, Great Britain and Canada.

State Sen. Villivalam Helps Secure Local Temporary COVID-19 Testing Site, Urges Residents to Get Tested BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL – In response to the recent rise in positive COVID-19 cases, State Senator Ram Villivalam (D-Chicago) is urging residents to take advantage of a new temporary testing site set up at the Bernard Horwich JCC. “Due to the increasing positivity rate in Chicago, we need to continue our strong testing and contact tracing operations to stay ahead of the virus and prevent a big outbreak,” Villivalam said. “Not only is this temporary testing site a way to make it easier than ever to get a fast, easy and free test, but it’s also key to being able to safely reopen our state and economy. Testing and contact tracing are vital to being able to put people back to work without compromising their health or that of their coworkers.” The temporary testing site is located at 3003 W. Touhy Avenue in Chicago. Testing will be available Monday, Aug. 10 through Sunday, Aug. 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Simple nasal swabs will be used, and both drive-thru and walk-up testing are available. Anyone can get tested regardless of whether they exhibit

Representative image

symptoms. The tests are free, and the results will be available within four to seven business days. Residents should bring their insurance card but can still get a test without insurance. “Part of why this virus is so dangerous is the asymptomatic cases that spread silently through communities,” Villivalam said. “Most

asymptomatic cases won’t know they have the virus unless they get tested. This site will allow anyone who may be worried about upcoming travel, visiting family, going to work or caring for children to get a test to make sure they don’t have COVID-19 and hopefully bring them a little peace of mind.”

Indian American Mom, Two Children Killed in New York State Thruway Crash BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY- Three family members were killed and five were injured Monday Aug 3rd night when a tractor-trailer rear-ended a car on the New York State Thruway and sent it barreling into another vehicle, police said. The tragic accident happened just after 8:30 p.m. in the Town of Ulster when 61-year-old Luc Leblanc, of Sala derry-de-val, Quebec, Canada slammed into the back of a 2012 Honda Accord on the highway’s southbound side, police said. Traffic had stopped in the right lane, near mile marker 88.3, but Leblanc couldn’t stop his 2010 Volvo tractor-trailer in time and “caused extensive damage” to the Honda, pushing it for roughly 500 feet, according to cops. The Honda then struck a 2007 Kia Sedona minivan, which was forced from the road, police said. The three Indian American family members in the back seat of the sedan — 10-year-old Justin Gayapersad, 47-year-old Zulika Salim and 14-year-old Chelsea Gayapersad — died at the scene, State Police said.

Englewood Restorative Justice Community Court RibbonCutting Postponed (L-R) Zulika Salim with her son Justin Gayapersad & daughter Chelsea Gayapersad

The driver of the Honda, 24-year-old Neta Singh and the 18-year-old front-seat passenger, Saleena Singh, were taken to area hospitals for minor injuries, cops said. Three people in the Kia — Sangeeta Singh, 27, Saleema Salim, 45, and Ramnarine Singh, 48 — were hospitalized as well.

The 48-year-old was airlifted for serious injuries while the other two suffered only minor injuries police said. The driver of the Kia was uninjured. Leblanc, who was also not injured, has not been charged in the crash and accident investigation remained ongoing.

Indian-Origin Scientists Find Novel Way to Treat Severe COVID-19 Cases Using Interleukin-6 Inhibitors BY A STAFF WRITER BOSTON, MS – A team of Indian American researchers has found that patients experiencing severe Covid-19 symptoms had improved outcomes when administered an Interleukin-6 (IL6ri) inhibitor, sarilumab or tocilizumab – used in treating autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and other several inflammatory conditions. The treatment was more effective when administered earlier in the disease course, reducing mortality rate and the need for intubation. Published in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases, the results showed that Interleukin-6 inhibitors appear to be a more effective treatment method as compared to other options, including remdesivir and dexamethasone, which are recommended and are being currently used to check the pandemic. “At a time when treatments are being tested with urgency amid the Covid-19 pandemic, our

Manish Sagar . (Boston University photo)

study results offer some hope towards finding solutions to better treat patients infected by this disease,” said study researcher Manish Sagar from the Boston University in Boston, Mass. According to the study, elevated IL-6 levels may mediate the severe systemic inflammatory responses that occur in patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome or Covid-19 infection.

The observational study included 255 Covid-19 patients being treated with IL6ri during stage IIB (149 patients) and stage III (106 patients) of the disease. Once an appropriate patient was identified, he/she was given IL6ri (sarilumab or tocilizumab) based on iteratively reviewed guidelines. The IL6ri was initially reserved for criticallyill patients, but after review, the treatment was liberalized for patients with lower oxygen requirements. The IL6ri recipients had considerably higher supplementary oxygen requirements, indicating more advanced disease than patients in previous remdesivir and dexamethasone trials, and would have been expected to have a higher mortality rate. The study’s sampling-with-replacement analysis found that the patients who received IL6ri had a lower mortality rate than patients in the intervention and control groups of remdesivir and dexamethasone trials.
