Trump meets shooting survivors
Florida school massacre: President also called for more hospitals, the idea of arming teachers IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Donald Trump met survivors and families of the victims that were killed in the Florida school shooting and suggested that teachers and staff members should be provided with arms to avert such massacres, the media reported. Trump’s comment came during a White House “listening session” which was attended by families and students including six survivors from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where a 19-year-old man Nikolas Cruz armed with an assault rifle killed 17 people on February 14, reports CNN. The event brought Trump faceto-face with students and parents who have demanded action on gun violence. “If you had a teacher who was adept with the firearm, they could end the attack very quickly,” he said, stating that schools could arm
BRIEFS First report predicts stronger economy WASHINGTON: The US economic growth rate will increase to 3.1 per cent in 2018 and remain above three per cent through 2020, according to President Donald Trump’s first official economic report to Congress. “The Trump Administration is the first since that of President Ronald Reagan to see positive economic growth exceed its firstyear forecast,” said the Economic Report of the President written by the Council of Economic advisers, in a detailed analysis of economic policies by Trump’s staff, Xinhua reported.
Trump endorses Mitt Romney for Senate WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has endorsed former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who will run for a Senate seat from Utah state in November. Despite their rivalry, Trump tweeted “all my support and endorsement” for Romney and considered him a “worthy successor” to Orrin Hatch, the current Utah senator who announced last month that he would retire after over four decades in office, reports Efe news. “Mitt Romney will make a great Senator. —IANS

up to 20 per ent of their teachers to stop “maniacs” who may try and attack them. “This would be obviously only for people who were very adept at handling a gun, and it would be, it’s called concealed carry, where a teacher would have a concealed gun on them. They’d go for special training and they would be there and you would no longer have a
gun-free zone,” Trump said. “Gunfree zone to a maniac — because they’re all cowards — a gun-free zone is ‘let’s go in and let’s attack because bullets aren’t coming back at us’.” Acknowledging that the idea was controversial, Trump said that his administration would give it serious study. The President also called for more mental institutions and hos-
pitals in addition to the idea of arming teachers. Trump’s idea of arming teachers and school staff was met with support from many of the attendees, CNN reported. Fred Abt, father of Parkland shooting survivor Carson Abt, said he had discussed with Education Secretary Betsy DeVos that rather than waiting for first responders to arrive, it would be more efficient to have firearms locked on school campuses. “One possible solution, which may not be very popular, would be to have people in the school, teachers, administrators who have volunteered to have a firearm safely locked in the classroom who are given training throughout the year,” he said. “There are plenty of teachers who are already licensed to carry firearms, have them raise their hands to volunteer for the training, and when something like this starts, the first responders are already on campus.
President pushes for ban on modified guns WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has signed an order to ban bump-stock devices or modified guns that enables one to shoot hundreds of rounds per minute and was used by a gunman to kill 58 Las Vegas concertgoers in 2017. Speaking at the White House this week, Trump said he has directed the Justice Department to propose a law to make the accessories illegal, the BBC reported. He said he directed Attorney General Jeff Sessions to finalize new guidelines to declare bump stocks illegal “very soon”. The gun control debate took on a new urgency after 17 students were killed at a school in Florida. Trump said: “We cannot merely take actions that make us feel like we are making a difference, we must actually make a difference.”
UN: Palestine calls for peace; US firm on Jerusalem ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS
P
alestine President Mahmoud Abbas has presented a threepoint peace plan centered on convening an international peace conference by mid-year to resolve the intractable conflict with Israel and reiterated his readiness for negotiations. He told a Security Council meeting on Palestine this week that the international conference should lead to the formation of an international multilateral mechanism that helps both parties to hold negotiations with a timeframe for implementing agreements they reach. Speaking to the Council after almost nine years, Abbas said Palestine will push for full membership in the UN, where it now
has only observer status, and that would be a condition for a peace settlement. Reiterating Palestine’s commitment to hold negotiations with Israel, Abbas said it “is our strategic
choice for the sake of the coming generations in our region.” While he accused Israel of shunning negotiations with Palestinians and ignoring UN resolutions, he also criticized Washington saying it
Trump challenges Sessions to probe Obama on Russia IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Donald Trump has challenged Attorney General Jeff Sessions to launch a probe into his predecessor Barack Obama’s administration for failing to do enough to stop the 2016 election foreign interference, the media reported. Trump’s remark was the latest in
a series where the President has faulted Obama for not doing enough to stop Russian meddling. But it was the first time Trump suggested that Sessions was not doing enough, reports CNN. “Question: If all of the Russian meddling took place during the Obama Administration, right up to January 20, why aren’t they the subject of the investigation?”
Barack Obama
Trump tweeted. “Why didn’t Obama do something about the meddling? Why
was creating a deadlock for the peace process by its decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. He recalled the four meetings he had with US President Donald Trump and asserted that his administration had not made clear if it stood by a two-state solution for the Palestine-Israel problem. US Permanent Representative Nikki Haley said that Washington was offering the “outstretched hand of the US” to Palestine to find a path to peace, but remained firm on the decision to move the embassy to Jerusalem. “You don’t have to like it, but that position won’t change,” she declared, adding, “Our negotiators are sitting right behind me, ready to talk.” aren’t Dem (Democratic) crimes under investigation? Ask Jeff Sessions!” Trump and Sessions were in the Oval Office together this week during an event honoring law enforcement officials. The two, according to a source, did not interact much while taking photos, reports CNN. Donald Trump has nursed a grudge against Jeff Sessions ever since the former Alabama senator decided to recuse himself from all Justice Department investigations into the 2016 campaign, including the ongoing probe regarding alleged cybercrime by Russia.

U
nderlining the significance of the large and influential Sikh and Punjabi community settled in his country, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, accompanied by his wife and children, offered prayers at the Golden Temple this week. Dressed in traditional Indian clothes and their heads covered, the Trudeau family bowed before the holy book of the Sikhs and tried their hand at making chappatis at the langar as they spent over an hour at the holiest of Sikh shrines. Trudeau, who later met Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh in a hotel, said that his country did not support any separatist movement in India or elsewhere. Amarinder Singh later said that he raised the issue of ‘Khalistan’ and the support certain elements in Canada were giving to it to cause disturbance in Punjab. “The categorical assurance from Trudeau came when Captain Amarinder Singh sought the Canadian Prime Minister’s cooperation in cracking down on separatism and hate crime by a fringe element, constituting a miniscule percentage of Canada’s population. “Citing the separatist movement in Quebec, Trudeau said he had dealt with such threats all his life and was fully aware of the dangers of violence, which he had always pushed back with all his might,” Chief Minister’s Media Advisor
Canada rescinds invite by Khalistan separatist NEW DELHI: Amid a raging controversy, the High Commission of Canada this week said that it has rescinded an invitation extended to Khalistan separatist Jaspal Atwal for a reception in honor of the visiting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “The High Commission has rescinded Mr. Atwal’s invitation,” the mission said in a statement. “We do not comment on matters relating to the PM’s security,” it added. A huge controversy erupted when news emerged that an invitation has been extended to Khalistan separatist Atwal, who was also convicted of attempted assassination in Canada in 1987, for the reception to be held at the residence of Canadian High Commissioner Nadir Patel here this week. — IANS

Raveen Thukral disclosed after their 40-minute meeting. Amarinder Singh thanked Trudeau for his explicit stand on a united India. He also handed over a list of nine Canada-based operatives alleged to be involved in hate crimes in Punjab by financing and supplying weapons for terrorist activities, and also engaged in trying to radicalize youth and children here. The Punjab Chief Minister also raised the issue of Indo-Canadians, believed to be involved in targeted killings in the state, urging him to initiate stern action against such elements. Pointing out that trade and commerce relations between the two were very low at the moment, he urged Trudeau to take steps to push investment by Canadian businesses in Punjab. The two leaders agreed to collaborate through joint projects. Canadian Defense Minister Harjit Singh Sajjan and Punjab Local
Government Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu were also present at the meeting. Earlier, Trudeau and his family landed at the Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, where they were received by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Sidhu, and headed straight for the Golden Temple complex to offer prayers. Accompanied by five Canadian federal ministers, including four of Indian-origin, Trudeau was received at its entrance by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Gobind Singh Longowal, Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal and Union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal. Wearing an off-white embroidered kurta-pyjama and head covered with a kesari (saffron) headscarf, Trudeau entered the complex with wife Sophie, who was wearing a light turquoise kurta and white
NEW DELHI: Ahead of the IndiaCanada bilateral summit, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland held a strategic dialogue this week covering a wide range of bilateral cooperation issues. In a tweet, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said that the two leaders “had wide ranging discussions on strengthening relations in trade and investment, security and cyber security, energy, people to people contacts and other relevant bilateral and regional issues.” Freeland arrived ahead of the bilateral summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau. The meeting was held amid wide speculation of Modi and his government cold-shouldering Trudeau dur-
palazzo and their children, who were also wearing traditional Indian outfits to loud slogans of Jo Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal. The Trudeaus first went to the Langar Hall, where thousands of devotees partake langar (community food) and also do sewa, and sat on small stools to knead flour and roll chapatis. The Canadian Prime Minister also did parikarma before entering the sun-soaked and glittering all-
ing his eight-day state visit to India that started on February 17. Ties between New Delhi and Ottawa have been frosty in recent times as Canada is being seen as offering a platform to separatists demanding an independent Khalistan. —IANS
gold sanctum sanctorum. The family bowed before the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book that is considered as a living guru. The Trudeaus were given Siropa (traditional robe of honor) by the head priest inside the shrine. Trudeau also visited the Partition Museum. Tight security was in place in and around Amritsar for Trudeau’s visit. Government security agencies and SGPC volunteers formed a tight security ring around him.
Canadian PM talks trade, immigration in Gujarat IANS, AHMEDABAD
T
he Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family, on a day-long visit to Gujarat, dressed in shades of festive yellow and red, visited the Sabarmati Ashram. After paying tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, the Canadian Prime Minister tried his hand at the spinning wheel. Trudeau appeared at ease as though on a family tour instead of an official visit and sported an attractive red bandhgala kurta accompanied by a cream-colored churidar and even a matching stole. Similarly, his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau was in a bright yellow long kurta which she teamed with white palazzo pants. She wore drop-down earrings, gold bangles and a little bindi to give her a completely traditional Indian look. Writing in the visitor’s book at the Sabarmati Asrham, Trudeau
said: “A beautiful place of peace, humanity and truth that is as needed today as ever.” He then proceeded to the Akshardham Temple in state capital Gandhinagar and spent about 40 minutes there. His last destination was the premier B-school Indian Institute of Management, Ahmed-
abad, for a townhall where he had a lively session with the students, taking questions and replying in great detail. On trade front, the Prime Minister said that current bilateral trade of $8 billion in goods and $2 billion in services had a potential to grow. Referring to the issue of immigra-
tion, especially in context of most of the countries globally looking inwards and raising barriers, Trudeau said that he and Canada firmly believed that the new reality for 21st century is going to be heterogeneous societies. “India has done fairly well and Canada too has done fairly well to see that differences can become source of strength and not weakness... As you get more pluralistic, language, religion, ethnicity, ideology should be anchored in shared values that society subscribes to.” Trudeau went on to say that dividing society on the basis of ethnicity and religious lines was a “tribal” approach to civilization that has over thousands of years ripped apart these beliefs. “There are two paths — you can either amplify the anxiety in the world by blaming a particular religious group for all the troubles or you can take a more successful pluralistic approach”, he said.

PM announces Rs 200-bn defense industrial corridor
India, Iran sign nine agreements
The project in Bundelkhand is expected to generate 250,000 jobs IANS, LUCKNOW
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced that his government will establish a Rs 200-billion defense industrial production corridor in Bundelkhand — a region divided between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh — that will generate 250,000 jobs and bring development to one of the most impoverished regions of the country. “I am making an important announcement. In this year’s budget, we had announced that we will establish two defense industrial production corridors. One of them will be in Bundelkhand,” Modi said addressing the inaugural session of the two-day Uttar Pradesh ‘Investors Meet’ at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow.

The government had earlier announced that it would develop two such corridors. The first of the two, announced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his budget speech, is being built between
Chennai and Bengaluru - connecting Kattupalli port, Chennai, Tiruchi, Coimbatore and Hosur. The project, he said, would bring an “investment of Rs 20,000 crore and generate employment
avenues for 250,000 people”. The Prime Minister said the decision to come with the defense production corridor to Uttar Pradesh was taken keeping in mind the developmental requirements of Bundelkhand region. The corridor will link Agra, Aligarh, Lucknow, Kanpur, Jhansi and Chitrakoot. Modi said Uttar Pradesh had a vast potential for development but needed policy, planning , performance. He lauded the efforts of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for setting the state on the path to give a “super hit” performance. The Prime Minister pointed out how air traffic in the state had grown by 30 per cent in the past one year with just three international airports in Agra, Varanasi and Lucknow.

bled outside Sisodia’s residence on Mathura Road and raised slogans against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. The protest was led by Delhi BJP General Secretary Kuljeet Singh Chahal. Addressing the workers, Chahal said: “Kejriwal and his party leaders must apologize to Prakash for their behavior.” He also accused the AAP government and Kejriwal of not acting

against his MLAs who allegedly assaulted the Chief Secretary. “They are promoting urban naxalism mindset in the people of the
city. This kind of lawlessness was never seen before in the city. “Thus the Chief Minister and his ministers must resign,” he said.
NEW DELHI: India and Iran on Saturday signed nine agreements, including on connectivity and double taxation avoidance, following delegation-level talks led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani (in picture) here. A lease contract was signed between Port and Maritime Organization (PMO), Iran, and India Ports Global Limited (IPGL) that envisages IPGL taking over operations of a part of the area of the multipurpose and container terminal of the strategic Chabahar port in Iran for a period of 18 months. During Modi’s visit to Tehran in 2016, India, Iran and Afghanistan signed a trilateral agreement to jointly develop the Chabahar port to boost connectivity to landlocked Afghanistan and Central Asian countries. According to a joint statement issued following the talks, with a view to fully utilise the potential of the Chabahar port and its connectivity to Afghanistan and Central Asia, India conveyed its readiness to support the development of Chabahar- Zahedan Rail line. “IRCON, India, and CDTIC, Iran, who are engaged in discussions, were tasked to finalize the technical parameters and financing options for the project in a time bound manner,” the statement said. “Both leaders encouraged greater efforts for cooperation in railway sector including supply of steel rails, turnouts and locomotives.” –IANS

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials said the alleged multi-crore fraud by issuing LOUs and FLCs for sanction of loan to diamantire Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi’s group of firms continued during Jindal’s tenure. Jindal, posted as GM Credit at PNB’s Head Office in New Delhi, was heading the second largest branch of the PNB when the practice of issuing the LoUs without sanctioned limits continued. Jindal was arrested on February 20 after his day-long questioning in Mumbai.

The emerging India-US role reversal
On one hand, India has a leader in Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is pursuing the future, while on the other, the US has a leader in Donald Trump who is pursuing the past FRANK F ISLAM, WASHINGTON
F
or the last half of the 20th century, the United States was the world’s beacon for democracy and economic development and India was a laggard. These roles are reversing as the end of the second decade of the 21st century approaches. India is becoming a beacon and the US is becoming a flashlight. In large part, this is a consequence of leadership. India has a leader in Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is pursuing the future. The US has a leader in Donald Trump who is pursuing the past. President Trump is emphasizing individualism and isolationism. Prime Minister Modi is stressing engagement and expansionism. Freedom House, in its annual report titled “Freedom in the World 2018” released in January, noted that “A long list of troubling developments contributed to the global decline of democracy, but perhaps most striking was the accelerating withdrawal of the United States from its historical commitment to promoting and supporting democracy.” The report’s aggregate Freedom Score rating (aggregate score) for the US in 2017 was 86 out of 100 points. Its aggregate score for India was 77. This shows that, overall, on the dimensions being mea-

sured, the US scores higher. But its score has dropped substantially from 94 in 2008. Today, the majority of the countries that rate 90 and above on their aggregate scores are older and smaller. They do not have the size or stature to assume the international democratic leadership mantle if America under the Trump Administration relinquishes it. India does. In the last part of
2017, as Prime Minister Modi called for more democratic processes and participation in India’s political parties, it appears that he may encourage the country to step forward to take on that obligation. Time will tell how this plays out. What is certain, at this point, based upon Modi’s opening address at the Davos Word Economic Forum on January 23, is that the Prime Minister is using India’s democracy as a
selling point and putting the country centre stage in terms of its own economic growth and promotion of international cooperation. In his Davos remarks, Modi stressed that India is the “largest democracy on planet Earth” and provided a litany of the enormous opportunities for companies to invest in “inclusive economic development”. He also struck a strong free-trade, globalization note while
Bringing happiness back to the depressed lives of Kashmiris Nazir Josh — known as Kashmir’s own Charlie Chaplin is trying to bring back laughter to the stoic faces in this conflict-ridden region SHEIKH QAYOOM, SRINAGAR
L
ong before it was infected by violence and its streets reverberated with sounds of slogans and gunfire, Kashmir was a place where one could hear laughter in every household in the evenings when Nazir Josh, Kashmir’s very own ‘Charlie Chaplin’, used to come on Doordarshan (DD), the national broadcaster, with his facial expressions of total bewilderment, the street impressions of a joker and strong Chaplinesque elements in his walking style. In this conflict-ridden region where young people have grown up witnessing violence erupting in their public spaces on a regular basis, the 67-year-old comedy king of Kashmir says that revival of humor is the only way to bring
back smiles and laughter to the stoic faces of Kashmiris deprived of a normal existence. A local poet, script writer, director and actor, Josh is known to every household here just as ‘Jum German’, ‘Ahead Raza’ and half a dozen other names based on the lead roles he has played in TV serials. He ran regular comedy serials on the local DD which were very well received by every Kashmiri. But it was all brought to a halt when separatist violence broke out in Kashmir in the late 1990s. While he was never directly at the receiving end of the violence, in the grim, strife-torn Valley there was little space left for humor and satire, and he was left without any sponsors. Josh believes that Kashmiris are facing many social and psychological problems which cannot be
addressed by medication alone. “People here need to unwind, and for that, humor and satire are the best avenues,” Josh told IANS. He recalled how a local family had come to thank him for helping cure their mother of depression. “The son of the lady being treated told me his mother had laughed after a long time when she saw an episode of my comedy serial Hazaar Dastaan. “When the boy told the p s yc h i a t r i s t about his mother’s laughter, which came after long months of depression, the psychiatrist advised them to show her more episodes of the comedy serial. It fully cured her.”
calling for international unity to address the issues of climate change, terrorism and protectionism. Modi didn’t directly say that India is open for business. But his message, throughout his comments, was that it is. Trump, on the other hand, in his closing address at Davos, stated explicitly that “America is open for business...” But the implicit message, throughout his comments, was that it is not. At various points during his speech, Trump asserted: “As President, I will always put America first...”; “The United States will no longer turn a blind eye to unfair economic practices...”; “My administration is proud to have led historic efforts... to de-nuke the Korean peninsula”. According to press reports, Trump’s speech was fairly well received while he stayed on script. Trump was, however, booed when he answered a question after concluding his prepared remarks by declaring, “...it wasn’t until I became a politician that I realized how nasty, how mean, how vicious and how fake the press can be.” Even in a setting where President Trump was trying to present his more cooperative side, his inherent combative nature and self-centered perspective came. By contrast, Prime Minister Modi was collaborative and ecumenical in his presentation of self and India.

A
quick-acting IndianAmerican maths teacher is being hailed for saving the lives of her students during the shooting rampage at a Florida high school that left 17 dead. When an alarm sounded for the second time last week, Shanthi Viswanathan shut the doors to her algebra classroom, made the students crouch on the floor and covered the windows, keeping them out of the reach and sight of the gunman, the Sun-Sentinel reported. “She was quick on her feet. She used her knowledge. She saved a lot of kids,” Dawn Jarboe, the mother of one of Viswanathan’s students, told the newspaper. When an elite police contingent known as a SWAT team came and knocked on the door asking her to open it, “Viswanathan took no chance that it wasn’t a trick by the gunman to get in” the newspaper said. “She said, ‘knock it down or open it with a key. I’m not opening the door,’” Jarboe quoted her as telling the police. “Some SWAT guy took out the

US court overturns $21 mn damages for wrong brain surgery NEW YORK: A court has overturned the $21 million awarded to the family of a woman of Indian descent who was operated on her brain instead of her jaw because of a hospital mix-up, according to media reports. In its decision, The Michigan State Supreme Court cited a technicality in the way the lawyers for the family of 81-year-old Bimla Nayyar framed the case, which originally got them the multi-million-dollar award from a lower court jury, The Washington Post reported. In 2012, Nayyar was admitted to the Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn for treating a dislocated jaw, the Detroit Free Press reported. But because her CT scan was mixed up with of another patient who had a skull fracture and bleeding in the brain, she was taken into an operating theatre. Surgeons drilled five holes in her skull, sawed a part of it and then replaced it after they found no bleeding or fracture, the newspaper said. She died six months after the surgery and the family won the $21

threatened in a YouTube post to shoot up schools. Although it was reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the agency closed the investigation without locating him, according to media reports. The shooter abandoned his gun and during the ensuing chaos mixed in with the students to escape. He was captured about 40 minutes later in a neighbouring town, authorities said. In the entire Broward County, where Parkland is located, the Indian population is 22,600, according to statisticalatlas.com. But none of those killed are of Indian descent.

Of that $500,000 would be given as immediate relief to Tonga and another $500,000 would be allocated to it from the India-UN Development Partnership Fund (IUNDPF), the UN Office of SouthSouth Cooperation (UNOSSC) announced this week. “Following the assessment of the damages caused and priorities needing support, the Government of Tonga will identify the rehabilitation projects to be supported through the I-UNDPF,” UNOSSC said. ‘250 dead in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta’ IANS, DAMASCUS
A
t least 250 civilians have been killed by shelling and air strikes in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta in the past 48 hours, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said Tuesday. The death toll included 58 children and 42 women, the group said in what was termed as the deadliest attack in the city in the last few years. More than 100 were killed and another 1,200 people were wounded by the Syrian regime shelling and air strikes on Monday on the besieged Damascus suburb, the rebel-held town of Hamouria, the CNN said.

The SOHR activists and residents described it as “being under constant bombardment”. The rights group said at least 106 of the civilian deaths took place on Tues-
day. The monitoring group said the death toll is the highest since the 2013 alleged chemical attack on Eastern Ghouta, which activists say killed approximately 1,400 people. “These are the worst days of our lives in Ghouta,” Eastern Ghouta hospital director and pediatrician Amani Ballour said. Various Islamic rebel groups control Eastern Ghouta, including the Al Qaeda-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which was previously known as Jabhat al Nusra before renouncing its ties to Al Qaeda. Several medical facilities in Eastern Ghouta were reported to have been struck on Monday, the CNN report said.
‘Pyongyang cancelled meeting with Pence in S Korea’ IANS, WASHINGTON
P
yongyang cancelled “at the last minute” a meeting with US Vice President Mike Pence scheduled to be held during the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in South Korea, Washington has said. US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert in a statement on Tuesday said that during Pence’s visit, “the possibility arose of a brief meeting with the North Korean delegation leaders,” but at the last minute, the North Korean officials “decided not to go forward

with the meeting. We regret their failure to seize this opportunity,” she said.
Nauert’s statement came after The Washington Post published an exclusive about North Korea can-
celling the meeting with Pence. On February 10, less than two hours before Pence and his team were to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s sister Kim Yo-jong and North Korea’s nominal head of state Kim Yong-nam, Pyongyang pulled out of the scheduled meeting, according to Pence’s office. The North Korean decision to withdraw from the meeting came after Pence used his trip to denounce the North’s nuclear ambitions and announce the “toughest and most aggressive” sanctions yet against the regime, the Post reported.

As a courtesy I wanted to avoid saying certain things but Kejriwal has launched my political campaign because he knows time is short for me.” Replying to questions from his fans, Kamal said he will serve the people of Tamil Nadu till his last and would like to leave a party for the next three or four generations. “There will be no permanent Chief Ministers if my party is voted to power,” he said. “Quality education, elimination
of corruption, supply of regular electricity and removal of unemployment will be among the priorities. If you eliminate corruption all this can be done.” He refused to answer queries about criticism by DMK leader M.K. Stalin that paper flowers do not have any fragrance or BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan’s description of him as a bonsai tree and AIADMK minister D. Jayakumar calling him a genetically modified seed that will not grow. “Should I answer these critics or look at what we have to do,” he said, adding angrily that this sort of remarks against him only shows how the opponents are angry about his entry. The actor took a dig at the government, saying his government would not give “quarter” (liquor) to men and scooter to women.

onceding to DMK’s demand for an all party meet to discuss the Supreme Court verdict on sharing of Cauvery river water, the Tamil Nadu government has called for a meeting here on February 22. The Tamil Nadu government in a statement issued here, said discussions are being held with legal experts on the apex court’s February 16 order. According to the statement, a meeting of all parties has been convened on February 22, at 10.30 a.m. at the state secretariat to discuss the steps to be taken to establish Tamil Nadu’s rights and also to protect the

welfare of Cauvery delta farmers. The meeting will be chaired by Chief Minister K.Palaniswami.
Soon after the judgement was delivered, DMK leader M.K.Stalin had hit out at the Tamil Nadu gov-
ernment, saying the state has been cheated out of its share of water while Karnataka, which did not honor any of the earlier orders of the court, has got a higher share. The Supreme Court verdict reduced Tamil Nadu’s share of the Cauvery river water to 177.25 thousand million cubic feet (TMC), down from 192 TMC allocated by a tribunal in 2007. Stalin had demanded Palaniswami to convene an all-party meet to discuss the unprecedented situation and decide on the next course of action. “I would like to insist that representatives from farmers’ association should be allowed to take part in the meet,” he had said.
Only Congress can challenge BJP, says Sharad Pawar IANS, PUNE
O
nly the Congress has the ability to challenge the country’s ruling BJP presently, and its ‘acche din’ will come, predicted Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar. The veteran politician was replying to blunt questions thrown by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena President Raj Thackeray who was “interviewing” him at a mega public function organized by Jagtik Marathi Academy. “In the past, the Congress had a strong organizational presence in the districts, states and all over

India. That is not so now... the party is changing. However, even the (Congress President) Rahul
Gandhi is also changing. He is willing to learn,” Pawar said. “Only the Congress can give a
challenge to the Bharatiya Janata Party. With Rahul maturing and learning, I think ‘achhe din’ will dawn for the Congress,” Pawar said, responding to wide-ranging questions for nearly 90 minutes. The encounter at the jampacked BMCC grounds created the desired fireworks, with Thackeray throwing political missiles and Pawar skillfully grabbing them or dodging them as he deemed fit as the two leaders shared a dais after more than 10 years. When Thackeray asked if is “hazardous to speak the truth in politics,” Pawar replied that “it is imperative to be truthful in poli-
tics, but when there are difficulties, its better to keep quiet”. In an indirect barb at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pawar said irrespective of differences in political ideologies, “elders must be accorded respect always” and said that the recent attack on India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru “was not proper.” He pointed out how former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had set principles in political life — “which is lacking now,” and compared how when Modi was the Gujarat Chief Minister, he “used to make personal attacks on (then) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh”.

Proteas, India T20I series level at 1-1
S Africa won by six wickets in the second T20. The final tie of the three-match series will be played on Saturday IANS, CENTURION
S
outh Africa rode on some powerful batting by Heinrich Klaasen and Jean-Paul Duminy to defeat India by six wickets in the second Twenty20 International (T20I) at the SuperSport Park here. Chasing a formidable target of 189 runs, the hosts romped home with eight balls to spare. The three-match series is now locked at 1-1. Klaasen brought up his maiden T20I halfcentury, producing an awe inspiring show of power hitting to plunder 69 runs off just 30 balls. Duminy remained unbeaten on 64 runs off 40 balls with four boundaries and three sixes. The South African chase was off to a decent start before J.J. Smuts stepped out to pacer Jaydev Unad-
Ball deflects off bowler’s head for 6 AUCKLAND: In a bizarre incident in cricket, Canterbury pace bowler Andrew Ellis saw one of his deliveries being hit on his head before going over the boundary for a six in New Zealand’s Ford Trophy Grand semi-final here. The incident took place at Colin Maiden Park when Canterbury were playing Auckland Aces. Auckland Aces batsman Jeet Raval danced down the track and smacked it back to the head of Ellis before the ball flew over the rope for a six. Raval had hit him for six the previous delivery, too, and although there was immediate concern for Ellis from the Aces with fears he may have been injured or concussed, tough nut Ellis passed a concussion test and resumed bowling, according to the New Zealand Cricket (NZC) website. “Whenever anybody gets hit in the head, your immediate concern is for the person and I was worried Andrew had hurt himself. But thankfully it soon looked like he hadn’t been injured by what had seemed a nasty blow. He’s a true Cantab, a very tough nut, and it was a relief for me to see him carry on and complete the game without any visible effects,” Raval, whose 149 powered Auckland to victory, said. —IANS
Brief scores: South Africa: 189/4 in overs (Heinrich Klaasen 69, Jean-Paul Duminy 64 not out; Jaydev Unadkat 2/42) vs India: 188/4 in 20 overs (Manish Pandey 79 not out, Mahendra Singh Dhoni 52 not out; Junior Dala 2/28).

Reeza Hendricks handed pacer Shardul Thakur a wicket on his T20I debut when he went after a short pitched delivery only to send his mistimed attempt into the hands of Hardik Pandya at deep mid-wicket. With both opener back in the pavilion after five overs, the hosts seemed to be in deep trouble. But

ndia skipper Virat Kohli achieved a rare feat when he crossed the 900-point mark concurrently in Tests and OneDay Internationals (ODIs) in the latest ICC ODI Player Rankings. Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan and India pacer Jasprit Bumrah also took joint-top position
among bowlers, an International Cricket Council (ICC) statement said. Kohli’s purple patch with the bat saw him become only the second batsman after South Africa’s AB de Villiers to attain the 900point mark concurrently in both forms of the game. He is one among only five to have crossed 900 points in both
forms of the game as he consolidated his top position with 558 runs in the 5-1 series win over South Africa, during which he
Heinrich Klaasen and Jean-Paul Duminy brought the South African innings back on track with a 93-run partnership. Klaasen brought up his halfcentury in style, hitting Hardik Pandya for a boundary to reach 51 in just 22 balls. The right-hander went berserk in the next over sending the home crowd into a frenzy. Unadkat brought his superb innings to an end in the very next over as Klaasen edged a slow offcutter to Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps. However, Duminy led from the front to take the battle to the Indian bowlers and fittingly, it was the Proteas captain who hit the winning runs. Earlier, India posted 188/4 in their 20 overs. notched up three tons. The 28-year old moved ahead of West Indian great Brian Lara in the all-timers’ list, having also overtaken him in the all-timers’ Test list last month. Kohli is now seventh in the ODI list of all-time rankings that is led by Vivian Richards with 935 points. Kohli is now a good 22 points clear of Sachin Tendulkar, whose ODI career high of 887 points came against Zimbabwe in January 1998. Kohli’s aggregate is the best since Brian Lara reached 911 points in March 1993.
After ODI triumph, Team India looks different VETURI SRIVATSA
T
here is a marked difference in the India team from the time they started their tour of South Africa and now when they are about to end it. They wear the look of champions. There is also a change in the tone and tenor of skipper Virat Kohli when he takes on the media after the One-Day Internationals (ODI) series. The team played aggressive cricket and handed South Africa a 5-1 mauling in the ODIs. No visiting team has ever given the Proteas such a hiding in their own backyard, raising the question whether India could have possibly won the Test series if they had

planned better. You can’t fault Kohli or his teammates if they today think the result of the Test series could as well have been 2-1 in their favor looking at
some of the sessions they dominated in the first two Tests. They had their moments, but they actually did not inspire confidence of winning the two matches
the way they approached the task. When the media tried to question Kohli after the first two Tests, like most losing captains he refused to believe there was something wrong with their effort. He was as aggressive with the media as he was on the field of play. He stonewalled most questions with counter-questioning or stubbornly refusing to accept the media logic on pitches, team selection and approach and attitude. After the ODI series, an emboldened Kohli was more forthcoming, but with philosophical answers. He refused to even accept praise for leading from the front with his brilliant records-shattering batting.

irector Neeraj Pandey’s Aiyaari, which means ‘shape shifting’, is a cry of rage against the corrupt system that is prevailing in the government and armed forces. It is a simply told tale and is based on facts. An astutely mounted and engaging suspense thriller, the film is told in Neeraj Pandey’s inimitable style of a cat and mouse chase between an army officer and his subordinate. The plot even ends in a chase: Not through the streets but through a labyrinth of facts, alibis and official corruption. Mansi Bodalia
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Maine East High School senior Mansi Bodalia is one of two local students to receive a Community Star Award this year from the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce. Bodalia’s recognition stems from her leadership role with Maine East’s Rotary Interact Club, in which she has organized fundraising efforts--leading to the purchase of $11,500 worth of toys for the WGN Toy Drive for children in need in 2016 and even more in 2017--and increasing club membership to more than 360 students, her nomination said. With Rotary, Bodalia was credited for leading a team to assist the Park Ridge Parks Foundation’s Bike and Trike Exchange and contributing to Maine East’s Random Acts of Kindness Week. She has also organized Rotary’s participation in the Park Ridge Charity Classic 5K fundraiser and Meals for Africa, in which members have packed meals for distribution to families in need. Cabbie blackmails Indian women, lands in jail
Vikramjit Verma
BY A STAFF WRITER ILWAUKEE, WI – A sweettongued Indian American cabbie who offered free rides to working women, developed friendly relations with them and later blackmailed them has finally got his just deserts. Vikramjit Verma, who was hauled up in March, 2015 after one of his victims informed the police, has been convicted of felony and sentenced to four months in jail followed by a two-year probation. The con man hails from Ludhiana, Punjab but is currently living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The yellow cab driver’s modus operandi was to spot Indian working women, both married and divorced, scrape an acquaintance with them and offer them free rides to their office. Verma, blessed with the gift of the gab, would soon get close to his victims, snap their indecent photos only to later blackmail them if they did not part with their money or jewellery. According to the police, who had found nude pictures of at least 60 Indian American women, including his wife’s, on his phone, the cabbie knew well that his victims’ Indian culture would force them to fulfil his demands lest he spilled the beans. The Sikh Temple of Wisconsin and Hindu Temple of Wisconsin firmly stood behind the brave complainant and demanded strictest punishment.

Gurjeet Singh with wife and son
BY A STAFF WRITER OLINE, IL -- An Indian American Uber driver was attacked late night near Moline, Illinois, by a passenger who held a gun to his head while spewing a racially-charged tirade. No arrests have been made in the case, though the suspect has been identified. “I really felt I was going to die that night. I prayed to God to save my life,” Gurjeet Singh, a Sikh who had driven for Uber for only a month before the attack. Singh, who serves as the head priest of the Silvis, Illinois, gurdwara, wears a turban and beard in accordance with the tenets of his Sikh religion. On the night of the attack, Singh said he picked up the attacker and his wife from a bar in Moline, and prepared to drive them about five miles away to their home. Singh said the suspect took the front seat, next to him, while his wife, who is not being named, sat in the back.
M
As he drove, Singh said the suspect peppered him with questions about his name, where he was from, and his immigration status. Singh said he answered the questions, but could see that the suspect was getting increasingly angry. His wife told him to keep quiet, which made him angrier. The passenger then asked the driver: “Do you serve our country or do you serve your country?” Singh said he was confused by the question, but replied that he serves both, as his family lives in India and he continues to help them. Singh pulled over to the side of the rural road. Once the car was stopped, the suspect’s wife reached across to open her husband’s door and pushed him out of the car onto the side of the road, according to the Sikh Coalition. The Sikh Coalition, which is advocating on Singh’s behalf, expressed concern that three weeks after the armed attack, a suspect has not yet been arrested.

Indian Assn of St Louis marks Republic Day
Fellowships for books on India
BY A STAFF WRITER he New India Foundation has announced a June 1 deadline for applications to the Ninth Round of its Fellows programme. Trustee Ramachandra Guha said: “In the 70 years since Independence, there has been a large body of work produced by Indian historians and social scientists. Taken singly, many of these studies are very impressive; viewed cumulatively, they add up to much less than what one might expect. “It is this lack that the New India Foundation seeks to address, by sponsoring work of quality on the histor y of India since Independence”. Open only to Indian nationals, these Fellowships will be awarded for one year and will carry a stipend of Rs 100,000 a month. Fellowship holders shall be expected to write original books. Proposals should be oriented towards publication, and outline a road map towards that destination. The Foundation is ecumenical as regards genre, theme, and ideology: the only requirement is that the proposed works contribute to a fuller understanding of independent India. Thus Fellowship holders may choose to write a memoir, or a work of reportage, or a thickly footnoted academic study. Their books could be oriented towards economics, or politics, or culture. They could be highly specific—an account of a single decade or a single region—or wide-ranging, such as a countrywide overview. Applicants for the New India Fellowships are invited to submit their book proposal and a writing sample of at least 5000 words (published or unpublished) either online (www.newindiafoundation.org/ fellowships) or by couriering a physical copy to the Managing Trustee, T h e Ne w I n d i a Fo u n d a t i o n , Neev Schools, Sy No.16, YemalurKempapura Main Road, Yemalur Bangalore 560037, Phone 080-71101774 (the phone number is provided for courier purposes only) before June 1. Sikh mayor gets death threats BY A STAFF WRITER OBOKEN, NJ -- Hoboken, New Jersey Mayor Ravi Bhalla, who was last week named as of counsel for Morristown, N.J.based law firm Lavery, Selvaggi, Abromitis & Cohen, P.C., has acknowledged that he and his family have received death threats and the police are taking them very seriously. The city is working with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force to improve City Hall security, media reports said. The announcement of death threats targeting the Indian American mayor comes less than a day after a man entered City Hall and left a bag in Bhalla’s office. The man, who was not apprehended, entered the building through the Newark Avenue entrance just before 8 pm and went through metal detectors. He told security officers that he was going to use the restroom. Bhalla’s deputy chief of staff, Jason

Bhalla, who was elected mayor in the 2017 November election, is the first member of the Sikh faith to serve as a mayor in New Jersey. Before assuming the mayoral position, he served for eight years on the city council where he was twice council president.
Hindus’ protest against Ganesha cutting board BY A STAFF WRITER O S TO N , M S - - B o s t o n headquartered online home giant Wayfair removed a cutting board carrying an image of the Hindu deity Lord Ganesha and apologized in less than 24 hours after an advocacy group of Indian American Hindus protested, calling it “highly inappropriate.” “We sincerely apologize that this item appeared on our site. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention,” Susan Frechette, associate director of corporate communications at Wayfair, wrote on February 12 in an e-mail to Rajan Zed, president of Universal Society of Hinduism, who spearheaded the protest asking for the withdrawal of the product. ‘Birchwood Golden Ganesha Elephant Cutting Board’ was selling at Wayfair for $34.99. BY A STAFF WRITER ARKLAND, FL -- An Indian American algebra teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., did everything in her power to protect her students when bullets were sprayed throughout the school. Shanthi Viswanathan, or Ms V as the students call her, became suspicious when the fire alarm rang out for the second time on February 14, the day a shooter entered the school and killed 17 people. Instead of releasing her Algebra II students, Viswanathan put a piece of paper over the window on the class door and told her students to huddle on the floor in the corner of the room. Dawn Jarboe, whose son was in the class, told reporters that Viswanathan’s actions probably saved her son and the rest of the kids in the class. It is learnt that Viswanathan even refused opening the door for SWAT members when they arrived. Instead, according to Jarboe, the teacher told the SWAT team to knock down the door or open it with a key. The younger Jarboe texted his mother that a SWAT member took out the window and cleared the room. Former student Nikolas de Jesus Cruz, 19, entered the high school around 2:20 pm on February 14 after arriving in an Uber. He was armed with an assault rifle and a duffel bag full of magazines.

Stanford Uni. scientists create low-cost solar cells BY A STAFF WRITER TANFORD, CA -- Scientists at Stanford University, including Indian American researcher Dr. Shrestha Basu Mallick, has shown how nanotechnology can be used to create crystalline silicon thin-film solar cells that are more efficient at capturing solar energy. The discovery can reduce the cost of solar energy production globally. Mallick, working with her advisers Dr. Mark Brongersma and Dr. Peter Peumans, developed a new method of producing a cheaper and more efficient solar cell. The team used optical modeling and electrical simulations to show that a thinfilm crystalline silicon solar cell with a 2-D nanostructure generated three times as much photo current as an unstructured cell of the same thickness. This is because the nano-structured surface traps incoming light more effectively causing it to spend more time within the silicon material. The longer the light spends inside the solar cell, the greater its chance of getting absorbed. “Light absorption in crystalline silicon solar cells can be significantly enhanced by nanostructuring and this reduces the

Maplewood. The No. 25 bus driver, Larry Wiley, 65, was pronounced dead shortly before 6 pm at University Hospital in Newark, where he was initially undergoing emergency surgery. The garbage truck driver and three passengers were being treated for non lifethreatening injuries at University Hospital, according to the prosecutor. Officials did not immediately release more details about the investigation, which was being handled by local police and the prosecutor’s office crash and fire Investigative unit. An autopsy was planned to determine the cause of the driver’s death, according to the prosecutor’s office. Wiley was the sole occupant of the bus when it was involved in a crash with the truck around 12:35 pm near the Hilton bus facility on Springfield Avenue, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert Laurino said in a statement.

Rare nursing award for Vandana Gopikumar BY A STAFF WRITER HILADELPHIA, PA -- Indian American entrepreneur Vandana Gopikumar, co-founder of The Banyan and the Banyan Academy of Leadership in Mental Health, is set to receive the 2018 Penn Nursing Renfield Foundation Award for Global Women’s Health. Gopikumar is receiving the award for her work in helping women with mental health problems in India. She co-founded both organizations with Vaishnavi Jayakumar. Gopikumar will receive the award–a $100,000 cash prize–during an event at the University of Pennsylvania on March 21. The Banyan began as a spontaneous and heartfelt response to the visible gaps in care and attention for homeless women with mental health problems, who in the eyes of society simply did not exist, the university said in a news release. There were no services to help them recover their lost lives. In the beginning, The Banyan offered a transit care facility that offered shelter, safe spaces and crisis intervention. quarter of global neonatal deaths happen in India where nearly 600,000 newborns die within 28 days of their birth every year, according to a new Unicef study. The study, which found the number of newborn deaths in India was one of the highest in the world, says the causes of such deaths are preventable and treatable as 80 per cent of these fatalities happen for no serious reason. On a brighter side, the study says, India has remarkably reduced the under-five mortality. “Though infant mortality in the country has declined considerably, the number of newborns dying each year remains unacceptably high. The first 28 days of life — the neonatal period — are the most vulnerable time for a child’s survival. Children face the highest risk of dying in their first month of life, at a global rate of 19 deaths per 1,000 live births. WASHINGTON: A study of middleaged women by the University of Illinois (UI) published in the journal Medicine found that sleep problems vary across the stages of menopause, yet are consistently correlated with hot flashes and depression. The UI researchers used data from the Midlife Women’s Health Study, which followed 776 women aged 45-54 in the greater Baltimore area for up to seven years. The women provided annual surveys and blood samples so that the researchers could track sleep disruptions, other menopausal symptoms and hormone levels as women transitioned from pre-to post-menopause, Xinhua reported. To track poor sleep, the surveys asked questions about the frequency of insomnia, restless sleep and sleep disturbances. The study found no correlation between the likelihood of reporting poor sleep before menopause, during menopause and after menopause. However, in analyzing the surveys for any other symptoms or factors that might be associated with poor sleep, the researchers found that hot flashes and depression were strongly correlated with poor sleep across all stages of menopause. —IANS
than 80 per cent died from preventable and treatable causes such as premature birth, complications during delivery, and infections like sepsis and pneumonia,” says the UN children’s agency. Affordable and quality healthcare solutions should be there for every mother and newborn. It includes steady supply of clean water and electricity at health facilities, presence of a skilled health attendant during birth, disinfecting the umbilical cord, breastfeeding within the first hour after birth and skin-to-skin contact between the mother and child, it said. “India is currently off-track to meet the SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) target for neonatal mortality of 12 by 2030,” said the report. However, the country has made impressive progress in reduction of under-five mortality.
n a first of its kind, scientists have developed novel tests that can indicate autism in children, a finding that could lead to earlier diagnosis of the developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact. The new blood and urine tests search for damage to proteins and could lead to earlier detection of autism and advance treatment. “Our discovery could lead to earlier diagnosis and intervention,”said lead author Naila Rabbani, Reader at the University of Warwick in Britain. “We hope the tests will also reveal new causative factors. With
further testing, we may reveal specific plasma and urinary profiles or ‘fingerprints’ of compounds with damaging modifications. “This may help us improve the diagnosis of autism and point the
way to new causes of autism spectrum disorders,” Rabbani said. Genetic causes have been found in 30-35 per cent of cases of autism and the remaining 65-70 per cent of cases are thought to be caused
by a combination of environmental factors, multiple mutations, and rare genetic variants. However, the researchers believe that the new tests could reveal yet to be identified causes of autism. In the study, published in Molecular Autism, the team analyzed blood and urine samples from kids who were diagnosed with autism and a control group of healthy children. Chemical differences were observed between the two groups. The researchers found a link between autism and damage to proteins in blood plasma by oxidation and glycation — processes where reactive oxygen species and sugar molecules spontaneously modify proteins.
Can exposure to certain viruses lead to diabetes? IANS, NEW YORK
S
cientists have identified four viruses that can produce insulin-like hormones that are active on human cells, thereby opening up possibilities of revealing biological mechanisms that may cause diabetes or cancer. Every cell in the body responds to the hormone insulin, and if that process starts to fail, you get diabetes. By analyzing large public research databases that hold viral genomic sequences, the researchers found that various viruses can pro-
duce peptides that are similar in whole or in part to 16 human hormones and regulatory proteins. “We show that these viral insulinlike peptides can act on human and rodent cells,” said the study’s lead author Emrah Altindis of the Joslin Diabetes Centre, a non-profit institution affiliated with Harvard Medical School. “We hope that studying these processes will help us to better understand the role of microbes in human disease,” Altindis said. The viruses, detailed in the study published in the journal PNAS,

were from a family of viruses known to infect fish. To find out if they could be active in mammals, the researchers chemically synthesized these viral insulinlike peptides (VILPs). Experimenting in mouse and human cells, the scientists studied
whether the VILPs could act like hormones. Their experiments proved that the VILPs could indeed bind to human insulin receptors and receptors for a closely-related hormone called IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1).

ingle fathers may be at more than double the risk of early death than single mothers and partnered parents, finds a new study. It is because solo fathers tended to be older, had higher cancer rates, and were more prone to heart disease. The likely culprits also included poor lifestyle choices and stress, said the researchers in a paper published in the journal The Lancet Public Health. “Our research highlights that single fathers have higher mortality, and demonstrates the need for public health policies to help identify and support these men,” said lead author Maria Chiu, researcher at the University of Toronto in Canada. “We did find that single fathers
Use potato slices to treat puffy eyes NEW DELHI: Waking up with puffy eyes is rather common and it is easy to treat them. Drink sufficient water and use refrigerated slices of potatoes to get rid of the puffiness, suggest experts. Bubbles Singh, Founder at Just B Au Naturel and Ragini Mehra, Founder at Beauty Source, have listed simple ways to treat your problem. According to Singh, the easiest way to get rid of puffy eyes is to drink water. When the body is well hydrated, there is less chance of water retention that can cause your under-eye area and other parts of your body to swell. Water also helps flush toxins out of the body.

ollywood celebrities Rishi Kapoor, Richa Chadha and Vivek Agnihotri have raised questions about the major banking fraud carried out by billionaire diamond trader Nirav Modi, who left the country in January. Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor, known for his quirky tweets on political issues, wrote: “What I cannot understand is that a bank loans Rs 11,300 crore ( $1.8 billion) since 2011 to someone, and no inquiries took place during that period? Only proves ‘All that sparkle are not diamonds’. Lot of skeletons in the cupboard and lots of hands in lots of gloves!”
Nirav Modi Actress Richa Chadha commented: “Bro! We pay 30.9 per cent income tax, 18 per cent GST and VAT on everything we buy. But Nirav Modi gets way with Rs
11,000 crore. My CA won’t be happy, but why the hell should I pay tax? So someone steals and gets away with it again?” The news of the fraud in a Mumbai branch of the Punjab National Bank (PNB) broke out on February 14. Questions are being raised on who let the jeweller — whose creations have been worn by the likes of Hollywood biggies Kate Winslet and Dakota Johnson — to leave the country. Photographer and producer Atul Kasbekar and ace cinematographer Santosh Sivan shared an SMS that is doing the rounds in the midst of the news about the scam. “Finding NiMo — movie by Punjab National Bank,” they tweeted.
