A
ll the top luxury hotels in Delhi have been scanned, the security is being worked out to the last minute detail, and, yes, The Beast will very much be part of the official entourage of US President Barack Obama, chief guest at this year’s Republic Day parade. It is learnt that an advance US security team would be in India around Jan 15 to fine-tune the security arrangements for Obama, the world’s most powerful leader. Though Obama visited India in 2010, the security this time would be more challenging as the US president would be seated in the open air on Rajpath for more than two hours to watch the Republic Day parade. In view of threats by Islamist militants after Washington launched air strikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, the security scenario has gained additional importance. A US Secret Service team would be in India next week to scour the luxury hotel where Obama and his wife Michelle would stay. US authorities have examined the top hotels in the capital including the two Taj hotels and Maurya Sheraton but nothing has been finalized, it is learnt. An idea of what Delhi can expect can be had from what transpired at the Marriott in Bris-

bane where Obama stayed for a night in November to attend the G20 Summit. Obama’s security ordered the stripping of an entire floor of the Marriott Hotel — clearing out the furniture and investigating every nook and corner. Security personnel removed bedding and furniture, including mirrors, from rooms. Other rooms were left with just desks and chairs as part of elaborate efforts to ensure Obama is not spied on.
The rooms were swept for bugs so that Obama can conduct confidential business and make private phone calls from within the hotel. US security agencies set up their own secure communications. The hotel was cordoned off and only those with accreditation were let in. Hundreds of staffers accompanying Obama occupied a number of floors at the hotel. Obama had traveled with a special portable security tent which could be set up in hotel rooms to allow him to exam-
ine classified material and hold talks. Obama reached Brisbane airport on board Air Force One and took off in his helicopter Marine One for Victoria Park. From there, he went in a cavalcade of 30 cars to Marriott. The chopper was accompanied by an advance team of three twin-rotor Ospreys and three other presidential helicopters. The president’s car, a Cadillac limousine, has been nicknamed “The Beast”. It is part of the US Secret Service classified motor pool.
The Beast’s armor plating is said to be eight inches thick and its doors weigh as much as those on a Boeing 757 aircraft. It has five-inch thick bulletproof windows with at least five layers to foil attacks. Its bus-size Goodyear tyres are Kevlar-reinforced and capable of keeping The Beast on the road for quite some distance if needed. The interior is sealed off from the outside to reduce risks of a chemical attack. A special foam surrounds the fuel tank to insulate it in the event of an impact, according to published reports. The Beast’s trunk is reported to contain everything from firefighting equipment and oxygen tanks to the president’s blood type. The Beast has three passengers the driver, the president’s lead Secret Service protective agent in the front passenger seat and, of course, the president himself. Four additional seats in the back are available. The drivers are highlytrained who can execute tight turns and other police-style evasion techniques, including turning 180 degrees in seconds. The Beast travels in a C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft wherever the president goes. A heavily-armored Chevrolet Suburban communications vehicle accompanies The Beast. Said to weigh 20,000 pounds, the car is said to be a guzzler of fuel.
India snubs US ‘certification’ of Pakistan Sony attack: US impose sanctions against North Korea IANS, NEW DELHI
WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama has signed an executive order, imposing new sanctions against the government of North Korea in response to what he called Pyongyang’s “numerous provocations,” particularly the cyber attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment. The sanctions targeted three entities — Reconnaissance General Bureau, Korea Mining Development Trading Corporation and Korea Tangun Trading Corporation, as well as 10 individuals who work for the aforementioned entities, denying them access to the US financial system and banning them doing transactions with US citizens according to the US Treasury Department, Xinhua reported. The actions “will further isolate key North Korean entities and disrupt the activities of close to a dozen critical North Korean operatives,” US Trea-
sury Secretary Jacob Lew said in a statement. “As the President has said, our response to North Korea’s
attack against Sony Pictures Entertainment will be proportional, and will take place at a time and in a manner of our choosing. Today’s actions are the first aspect of our response,” the White House said. The US has accused Pyongyang of hacking Sony Pictures Entertainment over a comedy film “The Interview” that depicts an assassination attempt on North Korea leader Kim Jong Un. But North Korea has denied involvement, saying such claims were “a wild rumor”.

n a strong reaction to Washington’s pat to Islamabad for acting against terror groups, India said it does not believe Pakistan was showing “sustained commitment” in fighting such outfits. India, however, said how Washington chooses to spend US taxpayers’ money “is entirely its prerogative”. The ‘certification’ by the US makes Pakistan eligible for an aid package under the Kerry-Lugar Bill. The Bill has “actions against terror groups” as one of the conditions that Pakistan must fulfil to be eligible for aid from the US. Sunanda Pushkar, the wife of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, was poisoned to death, says Delhi Police chief IANS, NEW DELHI

ongress leader Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar, found dead here nearly a year ago, was poisoned to death, Delhi Police said this week, triggering demands for his resignation from the Lok Sabha. Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi said a murder case had now been registered against “unknown persons” and that the final medical report was clear that Pushkar, 52, died an unnatural death. “She died due to poisoning. Whether the poison was given orally or injected into her body is being probed,” he said, adding her viscera would be sent abroad. Ruling out suicide, Special Commissioner of Police Deepak Mishra said it was a case of “homicidal poisoning”. Tharoor, a former central minister who is the Lok Sabha member from Thiruvananthapuram, said he was stunned by the developments and assured full cooperation with police. Pushkar was found dead in a luxury hotel on January 17, 2014, a day after she and Tharoor checked in because their house was allegedly getting painted. Both had been married twice earlier. Tharoor was then the minister of state for human resource development in the Manmohan Singh government.

In a letter to Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi dated Nov 12 and accessed by the media, Tharoor urged the police chief to take action against the concerned officer. Tharoor said that four Delhi Police officers interrogated his domestic help Narayan Singh last month — for 16 hours on November 7 and for 14 hours on November 8. On both days, Tharoor alleged that Narayan Singh was “repeatedly physically assaulted by one of your officers. “Worse, that officer used the traumatic physical assault to try and intimidate Narayan into ‘confessing’ that he and I murdered my wife,” the

The Delhi Police got the final medical report from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on December 29. Police sources told IANS the murder case was registered on January 4. The first autopsy report, submitted Jan 20 last year, said Tharoor’s wife died due to drug overdose. It reported a dozen injury marks on her body. A later autopsy report in July put the number of injury marks at 15.
All the injuries were caused by blunt forces except one which was an injection mark. Later, Sudhir Kumar Gupta, who headed the forensic team in AIIMS, alleged that he was pressured to show that Pushkar’s death was natural. The AIIMS denied the claim. Gupta was later moved out of his post. Meanwhile, a police team formed to investigate afresh Pushkar’s murder has started work, Bassi said. “The special team is looking into
each and every possibility of the case. Whatever is needed will be done,” Bassi told the media. Asked if Tharoor, a former central minister and now a Congress MP, would be questioned, he said: “We will do, if needed.” Informed sources told IANS that a Delhi Police team visited the Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences in Thiruvananthapuram last month to speak to doctors who had treated Pushkar.

T
he past week, apart from ushering in the New Year was also witness to the birth of a new institution in India. The formation of the NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog has brought the focus back on the country’s reforms process. The opposition, especially the Congress, termed its formation a “dangerous” idea and “an attack on the federal structure” of India’s polity while the CPI-M said that this would spur “privatization”. The ruling NDA responded by saying that the opposition was mere “politics” and those opposing it were “against development”. The new commission, right
from its nomenclature to its stated objectives, appears to be more in tune with the times and the overall economic landscape. For understanding the present and predicting (albeit inaccurately) the future, one often has to rely on the past. The planning experience in the Soviet Union, China and India point to similarities - and differences as well - are helpful in drawing fascinating insights about the nature of the planning process and how central planning as an idea appears to be dead. In between the Indo-Pakistan Conflict of 1965, the planning process was disrupted but the Fourth Plan was formulated in 1969. The Eighth Plan commenced in 1992 after market reforms were initiated in 1991 by the then finance minister Manmohan Singh. Subsequent plans saw a lesser role for the public sector -

We want you to participate in the vision that Prime Minister Modi has for India's future,” she said and enumerated the several programmes launched by the government, including the Make in India, Smart Cities, Swachch Bharat, and Skill India. She said the government has been working in mission mode to implement all these programmes. “You can contribute to them and become an active partner in these ventures. Our government is fully

Stating that he will introduce credit rating system for all municipalities, he suggested them to raise loans from banks and national and international financial institutions by improving their credit worthiness. The minister asked the municipal bodies to take up digitization of properties, revenues, assets and other details, saying the central government will provide the necessary funds for the project. Naidu said Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants all municipal bodies to start a website and a weekly electronic news digest, giving details of its activities and prepare a list of the poor. Advocating the need for devolution of more powers to urban local bodies, the minister said they should frame their own laws, rules and regulations for better governance.

ASHINGTON, DC -An Indian American man from Edison, New Jersey, Shayam Sridhar, 21, has been charged with setting fire to a hallway and a classroom in the Allison Road classroom building at Rutgers University in Piscataway last week. Sridhar was charged with seconddegree aggravated arson after he allegedly set fire to a 30-foot section of the hallway and an adjoining classroom on the second floor earlier this month. According to Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey, Sridhar had been a student at Rutgers, but left in the fall term. He was set to return to Rutgers in the spring 2015 semester. Sridhar was charged after authorities identified him from a photo obtained during the investigation. Bail was set at $75,000 and Sridhar was being held at Middlesex County jail in North Brunswick. The police did not disclose a motive in the Busch Campus fire. The blaze, which was extinguished by the overhead sprinkler system, caused $250,000 in damage. Nobody was injured in the fire, but it forced the evacuation of 210 students who were taking a final exam in a firstfloor auditorium.

LAINSBORO (NJ) -- A suspect claiming to be a government employee with the Department of Homeland Security convinced a Plainsboro resident to hand over $17,733. The victim, a resident of Raven’s Crest Drive, told the police the suspect contacted him last week, threatening him with deportation if he did not have all of his government documents updated immediately. The suspect told the victim he wanted money. The victim purchased thousands in Green Dot Money Pak cards and gave the suspect the serial numbers, according to the police.

ERKELEY (CA) -- Vaibhav Loomba, an Indian American student from the University of California at Davis who was pronounced dead after attending a fraternity party at a fraternity house near the U.C.-Berkeley campus died of acute ethyl alcohol intoxication. The Alameda County Sheriff ’s Office Coroner’s Bureau confirmed this on January 1. The police and firefighters found Loomba, 20, of Lafayette, Calif., at the Zeta Psi fraternity house on 2728 Bancroft Way in Berkeley on November 9. He was unresponsive after he attended a party the night before at the fraternity house. According to the coroner’s bureau, the investigation into Loomba’s death remains open. Loomba was described a “truly brilliant”

Vishalli Loomba said the two shared a “special bond that extends far beyond that of friends or siblings.” “He taught me that life is about the relationships you make and the people you are able to help and positively impact,” she wrote. “He was always smiling and warm.”

NGELES (CA) -- At a USC Games Day held on the USC campus December 10, Indian American students were heavily represented in the latest presentation of videogames created by the University of Southern California Games Program. “We have always had many talented Indian students in our courses and on our teams,” said Mike Zyda, director of the USC GamePipe Lab. The collaboration between the School of Cinematic Arts and the Viterbi School of Engineering Department of Computer Science helped make USC the No. 1 ranked game design school in North America in 2014 by The Princeton Review. USC Games hosted two events unveiling student-designed games. “We have such a range of games— in virtual reality, two screen experiences, mobile and more. I’m so proud of this year’s cohort because they are really stretching themselves and innovating in the field,” said Tracy Fullerton, director of USC Games, chair of the School of Cinematic Arts Interactive Media and Games Division and director of the USC Game Innovation Lab.

Hindu temple greets New Year with an Akhand Ramayan Path

REYSLAKE (IL) -- The Hindu Mandir of Lake County, which celebrates various events in a religious and traditional Hindu way, marked the New Year eve with an Akhand Ramayana path by performing Lord Ganesh and Ram Parivar and Vyasa Pujan by Pt. Anil Joshi Ji. President Harsh Kumar, Madhup Dhaon, and Avinash Khodke, along with more than a hundred dedicated devotees, participated in the Pujan and carried out 24 hours continuous Ramayana Path. At midnight, the devotees performed Arati and Chanted in chorus “Jai Shree Ram and Jai Hanuman” to obtain the blessings of the Lord for good things to happen throughout the New Year. In the morning, Sanjay Sharma and Mitilesh Sharma added lovely grace to the function by their melodious chanting of Ramayana even as the devotees sang Bhajans with utmost religious devotion. The grand opening celebration on December 22 was attended by a large senior group from the DuPage County area that are now becoming frequents to the Sahara Homecare locations for lunch and community events. The 80-odd people at the opening were treated to a lunch buffet and share valuable community service information such as the homecare program and other future upcoming services. The new location will serve as Sahara’s second DuPage County location (other in Lombard) and will help the company grow further into surrounding suburbs and expand into the bordering Cook County suburbs as well. “We have plans to grow further into new and surrounding suburbs from our Hanover Park location and fill the gap where people are left un-served or under-served. “The Hanover Park center will help open doors to clients seeking quality homecare

Despite the bitter cold, some 500 revellers joined the vibrant celebrations with family and friends to welcome 2015. The New Year party at Waterford banquet was one of the most talkedabout New Year eve event. There was an open bar from the beginning to the end of the party serving premium liquors and cocktails. There cannot be a good India- type festivity without excellent food. For that over 300 feet buffet was provided by India House what with the International varieties tables including Punjabi, Chinese, Rajwadi Gujarati, Khaman Dhokla, Royal Darbar and Fusion India dishes along with fountain of mango and chikoo lassi.

Fired unfairly, says UA crew BY A STAFF WRITER

HICAGO (IL) -- For years, the threat of terrorism-- and the fear that threat often engenders--has loomed large in the airline industry both for passengers and airline staff. That fact was made clear yet again earlier this week when 13 flight attendants for Chicago-based United Airlines filed a complaint with the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration claiming they were unfairly fired from their jobs on October 9 and 10 last year. In their complaint, the United flight attendants said the firings of all 13 came after they refused on July 14, 2014, to work United flight No. 869 from San Francisco to Hong Kong because of their collective concerns about a possible security threat to the Boeing 747 aircraft they were supposed to fly. As the complaint spells out, the flight attendants still refused to work the flight after being issued a direct order to do so by their supervisor--which prompted United to fire all 13, who together had more than 299 years of flight attendant experience. The flight attendants’ concerns for the safety of the crew and some 300 passengers booked on Flight 869 on July 14 stemmed in large part from the words “Bye Bye” that were found scrawled on the tail cone of the plane along with drawings of two faces--one of which was said to be smiling, while the other had a more troubling expression. It’s unclear based on the information in the complaint when the graffiti was first discovered and who first found it. As the complaint also noted in great detail, once the crew became aware of the graffiti, there was much subsequent back and forth among United Flight 869 crew and ground staff about what was discovered on the plane’s tail, how it possibly came to be there and when it might first have been put there.

It’s absolutely bogus and a very poorly staged and filmy story obviously recommended by people who believe that our law will let him get away with such baseless stories,” she added.

Then I was offered Beeruva, and I was told that it was an interesting project. I thought I might as well do something to get recognised as an actress,” Anisha told IANS. ‘Meaghamann’ — all guns blazing
J
ust like in the game of chess, how a move by your opponent might totally catch you off guard, the proceedings in Magilzh Thirumeni’s impressive action film Meaghamann achieves that. Interestingly, most of the film’s characters are inspired by chess pieces — king, rook, bishop and pawn. In the climax, when Siva (Arya) locks horns with the villain, Jothi, played by Ashutosh Rana, he slyly whispers in his ear “checkmate”. Both Siva and Jothi are

Arya plays an undercover policeman in a drug cartel. A man on a mission, he has no distractions even when the heroine desperately tries to know more about him. The film would’ve worked better even without a romantic track but this is Tamil cinema, and we’re used to the idea of having a heroine just for the heck of it even if it’s not necessarily needed. Arya is an extremely busy man, so he doesn’t waste time in singing duets with Hansika. But there’s one intimate number as part of a figment of Usha’s imagination.

n a major find, NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope has discovered three new Earthsize habitable or “Goldilocks” zones around Sun-like stars. Of the three, two are likely made of rock like our Earth. Of more than 1,000 verified planets found by Kepler, eight are less than twice Earth-size and in their stars’ habitable zone. All eight orbit stars are cooler and smaller than our Sun, the US space agency said in a statement. “Three of the newly-validated planets are located in their distant Suns’ habitable zone, the range of
distances from the host star where liquid water might exist on the surface of an orbiting planet,” informed John Grunsfeld, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate at the agency’s headquarters in Washington, DC. Two of the newly validated planets, Kepler-438b and Kepler442b, are less than 1.5 times the diameter of Earth. Kepler-438b, 475 light-years away, is 12 percent bigger than Earth and orbits its star once every 35.2 days. Kepler-442b, 1,100 light-years away, is 33 percent bigger than Earth and orbits its star once every
112 days. Both Kepler-438b and Kepler442b orbit stars smaller and cooler than our Sun, making the habitable zone closer to their parent star in the direction of the constellation Lyra. “Each result from the planethunting Kepler mission’s treasure trove of data takes us another step closer to answering the question of whether we are alone in the Universe,” Grunsfeld noted. The Kepler team has also added another 554 candidates to the roll of potential planets, six of which are near-Earth-size and orbit in the habitable zone of stars similar to our Sun.
