fter being flummoxed for a few days by the decision of several Sahitya Akademi award winners to return their medals, the Bharatiya Janata Party has finally been able to gather its wits together to respond. If it was initially taken aback, the reason was not only the unusual nature of the protest, which is vastly different from the political brouhaha which it usually faces, but also because the party has never had much to do with culture since its defining characteristic is Hindu nationalism with its religious and xenophobic components. As a result, the BJP didn’t seem to know how to counter this curious form of protest, which has an element of Gandhian renunciation about it. Some of the bewilderment of the saffronites could be seen in the union Minister of State for Culture Mahesh Sharma’s strange advice to writers to stop writing. “We will then see”, he had said while calling for a look at their background. It is perhaps this intention of checking the suspected motivations which made a couple of police investigators visit Ganesh Devy, a Vadodara-based writer who had returned his award, to ask whether his action was intended to spread “disaffection” — shades of the “midnight knock” of totalitarian countries. The BJP’s mentor, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has further muddied the waters by describing the refuseniks as “self-proclaimed contractors of intellect”, a phrase whose meaning is not immediately clear. Normally, the saffron camp tends to describe any dissenter as either “anti-Hindu”, as it labelled the protesting film institute students, or as left-liberals. This time, it wasn’t

Last week too in response to questions about reports that the US was exploring a deal to limit Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal and “that there may be a breakthrough in this regard” during Sharif’s visit, he had given a similar answer. “The expectation that we have is that a deal like the one that’s been discussed publicly is not something that’s likely to come to fruition next week,” Earnest said last week when asked whether

Obama and Sharif would discuss a nuclear deal. “But the United States and Pakistan are regularly engaged in a dialogue about the importance of nuclear security,” he said. “And I would anticipate that dialogue would include conversations between the leaders of our two countries.” “At this point, the United States has been engaged with Pakistan, as

WASHINGTON: The US government will now require the registration of almost all unmanned aircraft systems or drones in a bid to track operators who violate safety rules. The US Department of Transportation has announced that a task force of 25 to 30 representatives from the drone and manned aviation industries, the federal government, and other stakeholders will be created to develop recommendations for the drone registration process before November 20. The group will advise the department on which aircraft should be exempted from registration due to a low safety risk, including toys and certain other small drones. The task force will also explore options for a streamlined system that would make registration less burdensome for commercial drone operators. “If unmanned aircraft operators break the rules, there should be consequences. But there can be no accountability if a person breaking the rules can’t be identified,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx told reporters.

rotesting against the recent attacks by “fringe elements” on the society, a group of writers from different parts of the country here on Tuesday said the Indian society has been “poisoned with intolerance”. Addressing a “Protest meet” at the Press Club of India here, writers like Manglesh Dabral, who returned his Sahitya Akademi Award last week, Hindi veteran writer Vishwanath Tripathi, and writer and editor Om Thanvi expressed concern over “increasing intolerance” in the society. Pointing to the attacks by some Hindutva groups on writers and thinkers like M.M. Kalburgi, Tripathi said: “To kill a person for his views and beliefs is very dangerous sign in a secular society. This is not just a fight of Sahitya Akademi winners, but of all writers.” The writers said returning of the

Shiv Sena hoardings taunting Modi removed MUMBAI: Police on October 21 removed large hoardings of the Shiv Sena which taunted Prime Minister Narendra Modi while glorifying its founder leader Bal Thackeray. The hoardings came up on the eve of the Sena’s annual Dussehra rally, and ahead of the first anniversary of the coalition government. All the hoardings with a collage of pictures show Modi, when he was the Gujarat chief minister, bowing before the late Bal Thackeray. ‘Daal’ prices haunt BJP in Bihar IMRAN KHAN, PATNA
T
he Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies have a new headache in Bihar: rising prices of ‘dal’. With prices of pulses shooting up across the country, the anti-BJP alliance is having a field day blaming Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his central government. With hardly a week to go for the third round of the Bihar elections, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD leader Lalu Prasad are going hammer and tongs against the BJP. Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and
RJD activists say they are playing the “dal card” against the BJP-led alliance in what is expected to be a tough contest for the 243-member Bihar assembly. Sensing trouble, the BJP and LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan -- who is also the agriculture minister in the Modi government -- and others in their camp on October 20 began damage control by blaming the Bihar government for the state of affairs. Paswan has been downplaying the issue of rising prices. At the same time, he has promised to provide cheaper dal if the BJP-led alliance
wins in Bihar. Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar thunder at every election meeting that dal prices are shooting up because of the Modi government’s policies. Lalu Prasad says this is how the poor have been deprived of pulses. “Modi has taken away the ‘dal’ in the poor man’s dal-
roti.” Nitish Kumar has hit back at Paswan after he blamed him for the rising dal prices in Bihar. “If I am to blame, why is dal selling at Rs.200 a kg in BJP-ruled states including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan?” the JD-U leader keeps asking.

How a sleepy little village launched Mumbai’s famous dance bars
Writers as refuseniks — BJP’s blind spot
MUMBAI: Some 35 years ago, a sleepy, little village of Khalapur, five kms from Khopoli on the old MumbaiPune national highway, would magically come alive at dusk, Cinderellalike. The narrow streets would be jammed with fancy cars and motorbikes honking for space. Revellers from Mumbai, Pune, Nashik and even Goa came there to spend some happy hours at its famed dance bars.
At one stroke, an estimated 1.2 million dancers in the 2,800 legal, and as many unauthorized dance bars, mainly in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Raigad, Pune and the state highways, besides a few hundred thousand of supporting staff were thrown onto the streets. At its height, some of the topnotch dancers prospered, and some like the enchanting Tarannum, were
The first such dance bar, considered the best and the biggest attraction, was ‘Baywatch’ — popular long before the American tele-serial by the same name in the 1990s. Strategically situated just off the Mumbai-Pune highway, and later even the Mumbai-Pune Expressway which came up nearly two decades later, vehicles taking a bypass in the mofussil darkness of Khalapur were barely noticed or missed. The dancers, girls/women aged between 15-35, were transported from pre-determined locations in Mumbai, Thane and other places in airconditioned deluxe buses to Khalapur by dusk; when all the fun started. Unique to the maximum city which never slept, scores of young girls or women gyrated to deafening Bollywood numbers, with colorful lights, a hazy air-conditioned atmosphere reeking of cigarette smoke, liquor, perfumes and food. The patrons were mostly youth or wealthy businessmen, tourists, both domestic and international, who enjoyed an “interactive” session with the dancers by showering them with money or ‘garlands’ of currency notes of various denominations, occasionally going upto Rs 1000 notes for special dancers. Then on Independence Day in 2005, the Maharashtra government struck like lightning banning them, forcing the colorful dance bars to become silent and barren.
raided by the income tax department loosening up thousands of rupees as tax. Often the top-end dancers arrived at work in their deluxe chauffeured vehicles, private armed security and even a secretary to collect the raining currency notes showered on them by delirious patron-fans. However, for a majority of the rest, their plight was similar to what was shown in Chandni Bar, the 2001 national award-winning movie with the central theme of dance bars. After making a somewhat neat bundle for the evening — around a few thousand rupees — most dancers returned home by the same buses before sunrise the next day. Some, of course, had their own side businesses going, departing independently, courtesy regular cabbies approved by the hoteliers. At Khalapur village, some 500700 ‘outside girls’ were seen coming daily for the evening. Although the business brought obvious prosperity to the locals, some from the predominantly farming community raised objections, saying the business was against local traditions and culture. There were also charges of prostitution thrown at dance bars. Eventually, such objections found echo among politicians. The government ordered that the bars be shut down. The once enticing village, luring patrons from the highway with its colorful fairylights, was reduced to a dark, decrepit locality, shunned by one and all.

fter being flummoxed for a few days by the decision of several Sahitya Akademi award winners to return their medals, the Bharatiya Janata Party has finally been able to gather its wits together to respond. This time, it wasn’t

which means pro-Congress — background is a disadvantage for the saffron brotherhood. Jaitley has tried to bypass this difficulty by describing the revolt as a “manufactured paper rebellion”. The meaning of this clumsy phrase is however as unclear as the comment of the RSS about the “contractors of intellect” unless the finance minister distinguishes a “paper rebellion” from a street protest. He is also silent about the manu-

The customary ploy, therefore, of dismissing the complaints as the ranting of opportunists will not do. An additional difficulty for the saffron camp is that there are no writers or academics of an equal stature in its ranks to counter the accusers.

ech giant Apple has been told to pay $234 million to the intellectual property arm of Wisconsin University, Madison, for using without permission patented technology developed by its team, including two Indian-American engineers. The award amount a federal jury in Madison asked to Apple to pay on October 16 was about $165 million less than what Wisconsin University Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) had sought, according to Wisconsin State Journal. The case centers on technology that became a component of processors that run widely popular Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad. Vanita Budhan, 22, Nicole Patel, 23, Nihara Chakrala, 24, Somya Sharma, 23, Suchitra Singh, 24, and Chhavi Verg, 18, are the competitors in “Miss New Jersey USA”. Apple attorneys declined to comment, referring questions to the California company’s public relations office, the Journal said. Spokesperson Rachel Tulley said that Apple plans to appeal. The jury also ruled that a subset of processing chips produced in Texas by Samsung under contract for Apple, then exported to Korea, still infringed on WARF’s patent. Doctor probed over needless procedures WASHINGTON: As many as 293 patients of an Indian-American cardiologist around a small town in Indiana have filed lawsuits against him and two other doctors in his practice claiming that they performed needless procedures. The Indiana state Medicaid programme has started an investigation against Munster, Indiana based Dr. Arvind Gandhi and his partners, Dr. Wail Asfour and Dr. Satyaprakash Makam, according to the New York Times. The three doctors received nearly $5 million in combined Medicare payments in 2012, making them the three most reimbursed cardiologists in Indiana, it said. The Times quoted one doctor as saying he had received a subpoena from the US attorney’s office and provided the medical charts of several former patients of Dr. Gandhi and his colleagues that he has since treated. Lawyers for Dr. Gandhi and his practice said they had not received any subpoenas, and the doctors denied any wrongdoing.

These male-specific neurons are required for sex-based differences in learning, suggesting that sex differences in cognitive abilities can be
genetically hardwired. “Areas of the brain involved in learning display sex differences in many animals, including humans, but how these differences directly affect behavior is not clear,” said senior author Arantza Barrios from University College London. The team has shown how genetic and developmental differences between the two sexes lead to structural changes in the brain of male worms during sexual maturation.

The newly identified pair of neurons — called ‘mystery cells of the male’ or “MCMs” — create behavioral differences between the sexes by changing a brain circuit common to both. The “MCM” neurons are only made from glial cells that have male chromosomes. “Though the work

The scientists can now exploit this system to understand how fully differentiated glia can re-enter the cell cycle and generate neurons. This could have important therapeutic implications in the future.

fter his successful three-day second date in Kolkata, Brazilian legend Pele, set foot in country's capital New Delhi on October 16, when he saw Subroto Cup U-17 Championship finals in Ambedkar Stadium. All India Football Federation (AIFF) technical director Scott O'Donell believes AIFF Academy boys clinching the Subroto Cup Under-17 title in front of the iconic Pele was a spectacular and remarkable moment for the young bunch.
The AIFF Academy boys outplayed Little Angels Paradise Secondary School of Manipur 4-1 at the Ambedkar Stadium to win the coveted trophy. "It is always nice to win but it should not be the priority in youth development. I said to the boys before the game, that if they play the way we know they can play, then the result will take care of itself," O'Donell said. "Winning the Subroto Cup was very pleasing for the boys but for me the experience of playing a competition final in front of Pele was extremely beneficial for the boys."
ollowing a successful start to his professional career, star Indian boxer Vijender Singh will next face Nottingham's unbeaten Dean Gillen in his London debut on October 30 at the Harrow Leisure Centre here. The middleweight Indian made an immediate impact earlier this month when he easily defeated Sonny Whiting in three rounds at the Manchester Arena. Vijender, who will turn 30 a day before his fight, will take on Gillen over four rounds. Gillen, who is a fire fighter, made his pro debut in May this year with a points win over Shaun White and followed it up in September with another points win over Lewis van Poetsch. "I've watched him in the Olympics and in his pro-debut. He's a world class kid and I can't wait to get in there and put him to the test. He's an Olympian and that speaks for itself. He's a hero in his country and he's idolized by millions of people. I'm certainly no
journeyman and I'm not going in to make up numbers, I'm here to fight and win," said the 33-yearold Gillen. "I know the odds are stacked against me but when you're facing life risking tasks through your job then fighting someone like Singh is a walk in the park. I will be coming for him. I've got a strong jab and the reach to take advantage of him, backed up with a solid chin and a real desire and with nothing to lose. I'm going to be a really dangerous opponent for Singh."
SHANGHAI: Indian racing ace Armaan Ebrahim was denied another podium finish due to a drive-through penalty as he finished fourth in the second race of the double-header of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia series here. Armaan started Race 2 in seventh position, but worked his way to third and while attempting to move up to second place, made contact with another competitor who spun off. The incident led to a penalty for the Chennai-based Armaan. However, Ebrahim delivered a podium finish by finishing second in the fifth and final round of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia series here on October 17. Armaan along with his Sri Lankan partner Dilantha Malagamuwa qualified third overall and second in the Pro-Am class for the first race of the weekend. Armaan did well to hold first position till he handed over the car to Dilantha.

No star bigger than film’s success: Prabhas The success of ‘Baahubali’, according to the actor, belongs to every last member of the team who worked to ensure a smooth release HARICHARAN PUDIPEDDI, CHENNAI
T
he phenomenal success of S.S, Rajamouli’s Baahubali, which has emerged as India’s biggest blockbuster, has made its lead actor Prabhas realize something very important -- that the success of any film should be attributed to its team and not to the star. “This success has taught me that a star alone can’t be credited for a film’s success, which is usually achieved by a team. No star is bigger than the success of a film,”
Prabhas told IANS in an exclusive interview. The success of Baahubali, according to the 35-year-old actor, belongs to every last member of the
‘This taught me that a star alone can’t be credited for a film’s success’ team who worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth release. “Firstly, it’s not easy to make a film on such a grand scale. The bigger challenge nowadays is to take a film to the theatres. In our case, we
didn’t face any difficulty in releasing, which was only possible because of meticulous planning and team work,” he said. Despite appreciations pouring in from all quarters for his performance, Prabhas doesn’t consider himself a national star yet. “It felt nice when stars like Ranbir Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan appreciated my performance. Rajinikanth sir called and congratulated me. Such things have never happened before. I’m glad I’m popular, people recognize wherever I go, but it’s too early to be called a national star,” he said.

BRIEFS: ‘Naanum...’ highly emotional, yet funny

CHENNAI: Director Vignesh Shivan says the forthcoming Tamil film Naanum Rowdydhaan is highly emotional, but its humorous treatment makes it a cut above the rest of the films in the same league. “As a story, it’s very emotional. What makes it different from other films is its treatment, the way extreme emotions have been handled. In the film, you’ll find moments where you laugh and cry, but we’ve achieved a perfect balance,” Vignesh said. The film, which releases in cinemas on October 21, features Vijay Sethupathi and Nayanthara.
‘10 Endrathukulla’ stunts done safely CHENNAI: Southern star Vikram plays a car driver in his upcoming Tamil actioner “10 Endrathukulla”, and he says all the action sequences Vikram in the film have been performed with logic, safety and sanity. “All the dangerous stunts were done within the realm of logic and sanity. Cinema, in my opinion, is made on the concept of make-believe, so it’s important to keep everything as safe as possible,” Vikram told IANS.
ctress Seerat Kapoor, who awaits the release of forthcoming Telugu romantic drama Columbus, is not in a hurry to accept every offer that comes her way because she prefers picking good roles over films. “I don’t like to rush. Columbus is my third film in two years. I’m happy with the kind of different roles I’ve done. I’m being choosy and picking roles on the basis of my experience in the industry and I want to continue doing so,” Seerat told IANS. The Run Raja Run actress says it’s
important for her that each character she chooses supersedes the one she has done before. “My benchmark for a new role is that it excites me and should give me the feeling that it’s better than my last role,” she said. Her latest film Columbus, co-starring Sumanth Ashwin and Mishti Chakraborty, releases in cinemas on October 22. “It’s a journey of three characters that undergo a process of self-realization, allowing them to discover emotions they’ve never experienced before. The story is so unique, it stunned me when I heard it for the first time,” she said.
Kanche’ took me to a different era: Pragya Jaiswal CHENNAI: Actress Pragya Jaiswal, who plays a girl from the royal family in forthcoming Telugu war drama Kanche, says the experience of working in the film transported her to a different era. “I play a girl from 1930s. Mahesh will be joined by his wife Namrata Shirodkar and their
children Gautham and Sitara. According to the industry grapevine, Mahesh is likely to team up with filmmaker A.R. Muruga-

You know, even after the shoot got over, it took me a while to get back to my normal self,” Pragya told IANS. “I got so involved in the project that even when I was at home, I’d wear a bindi, and my mom would ask me if everything was all right with me,” she added. The film features Varun Tej in the lead role of a soldier. It would be considered unconventional for an aspiring actress to do a period film so early on in her career but Pragya didn’t have any qualms whatsoever. “It really didn’t matter to me. Varun and I just surrendered to director Krish Jagarlamudi, and it was so much fun,” she said.

MUMBAI: Amid the constant debate between commercial and non-commercial cinema, director Anurag Kashyap says that he hopes that every good film should be considered a commercial film. “I’m hoping that every good film is a commercial film. Every good film should be a commercial film. And my definition of commercial is that if the film goes out and people engage in it and it earns money, then it is a commercial film,” he said at a press meet for promoting upcoming film Titli. “The first mistake that we make is that without even watching the film we tag it as ‘parallel’,” he said.

he makers of thriller Darling Don’t Cheat, which was all set to release on October 30, are worried if they can release it on schedule after the censor board sought numerous cuts and mutes in its scenes and dialogues. “We were looking forward to the release as we have received a mindboggling response for our promotional activities. But the censor board’s instructions to have numerous cuts and mutes in the controversial scenes, dialogues and cuss words have come as a shock to us. We are now in a dilemma and the entire decision-making team will soon deliberate on the next course
of action,” producer-director Rajkumar Hindusthani told IANS. “There is no doubt that our film is bold and has a lot of explicit scenes but each scene is according to the demand of the script. I feel the cuts and mutes suggested are

A
love quadrangle based on My Best Friend’s Wedding template, Wedding Pullav is a stale, over-cooked and spiceless tale, with predictable romance tropes from the very first frame to the last. Motorbike designer Aditya Sodhi aka Aadi (Diganth Manchale) is all
set to get engaged to Riya (Sonnalli Seygall), an industrialist’s daughter, when he guiltily realizes that his childhood friend, Anushka aka Lambu, is missing.
Lo and behold, Lambu announces her entry with the bang of the band! As the friends reunite, we learn that Lambu has a boyfriend Jay (Karan Grover), an artist who
specializes in nudes, stowed away in London. The friends propose that Anushka and Jay should get married at the same time as Aadi and Riya. So together with their respective partners, they decide to marry at Aadi and Riya’s pre-planned destination in Thailand. So far un-convoluted but cliched, the entire coterie, family and friends land up at the wedding destination to cook the Wedding Pullav! With verbose expositions, the undoing of this elaborate Wedding Pullav, is the fraught with “tell and show” scenes that are incorporated in the lazily drafted script. Humor is forced and the dialogues are shallow, frivolous and lacks class. — Troy Ribeiro

Indians in forefront as ‘Young Scientists’
BY A STAFF WRITER AN JOSE, CA -- Indian Americans were well represented at the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, and despite none taking the grand prize, three of the five finished right behind the winner, in results released on October 13. Raghav Ganesh, 13, of San Jose, Calif., took second place. The eighth grader took the award for his innovation that helps monitor physiological and environmental factors that can trigger stress in autistic people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. He teamed up with 3M scientist Kris Thunhorst. Amulya Garimella, 11, of Pittsburgh, finished third. The seventh grader won for her distraction-monitoring prototype that alerts the user experiencing a distraction by measuring EEG brainwaves. She teamed up with 3M scientist Cordell Hardy.

Body found in lake is of Salesforce employee
Raghavendra Indugula
BY A STAFF WRITER IVERMORE, CA -- A body found on October 14 morning in a lake near Livermore is believed to be a missing boater who crews have been searching for since October 9. A fisherman found the body at about 7:10 am floating about half a mile north of the Lake Del Valle marina, just south of where Salesforce IT contractor Raghavendra Indugula, 31, of San Francisco, disappeared during a company outing on October 9. Salesforce has issued a statement, saying it was aware of the finding. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Raghu’s family and friends,” company officials said. Indugula was visiting Lake Del Valle as part of a team-building activity with his Salesforce co-workers. Multiple groups were being shuttled back to the marina from the Hetch Hetchy group picnic area at about 7 pm on October 9. The 14-foot aluminum boat carrying Indugula and seven others was at capacity when it started filling with water. An East Bay Regional Park District police spokeswoman said that the passengers jumped from the boat and started swimming to shore, but when they arrived, Indugula had disappeared. The water reaches depths of 50 feet where the boaters abandoned the ship, complicating search efforts. Search and rescue crews from Alameda County, Livermore and the park district officials searched over the weekend and even later.

Iris Gupta, 12, of North Potomac, Md., took fourth place. Teaming up with 3M scientist Raha Been, the seventh grader won for her project that seeks to stop allergies at the source through inhaling or injecting nanoparticles that block allergy-triggering particles. To help those with Autism and their caregivers, Raghav Ganesh’s invention
predicts and prevents Autistic meltdowns. Ganesh’s wireless and wearable machine alerts the wearer and caregiver when any stressors rise above a certain threshold. His invention allows care to be tailored to individuals’ needs by recording all sensory data and therapeutic responses. With a love for both filmmaking and science, Garimella’s goal of preventing distractions while trying to concentrate resulted in her developing a distraction monitoring system that alerts the distracted individual and reminds them to concentrate and get back to work. Ganesh, Garimella and Gupta each received a $1,000 prize and a student adventure trip for finishing in their respective places. Two other Indian Americans also placed in the top 10 at the Young Scientist Challenge: Krishna Reddy and Sanjana Shah. Reddy and Shah each received a
$1,000 prize and a $500 gift card from Discovery Experiences for their placing. The 10 finalists spent the better part of three months working with their 3M scientist mentor to make their project a reality and presented them to a panel of judges during the Young Scientist Challenge event on October. 13 at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minn. Also during the final competition, the finalists competed in two separate challenges, including combining multiple 3M technologies to yield new solutions and build a simple machine using science and engineering principles. The winner of the competition was 15-year-old Hannah Herbst, of Boca Raton, Fla. Herbst won by creating an energy probe prototype that seeks to offer a stable power source to developing countries by using untapped energy from ocean currents. Her prize was $25,000 and the title of America’s Top Young Scientist.

Schoenfeld, with support from the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), has filed a complaint alleging religious discrimination after being dismissed from her position at the Epes Dental Clinic. “This is old school bullying, old school prejudice, old school bigotry,” MRFF founder and president Michael Weinstein stated in a press release. “When you marginalize and tell another human being that he or she lacks intelligent culture, bravery, character and trustworthiness because of the chosen religious faith, it is no different than telling them that they are stupid

because of the color of their skin or being born female.” Schoenfeld, who has practised Hinduism for the past 15 years, describes a pattern of harassment from her primarily-Christian colleagues. She notes that her faith and practice of yoga was described as “satanic,” and one colleague told her that meditating would summon demons. Another colleague allegedly celebrated Schoenfeld’s dismissal and replacement with a Christian employee as replacing a “devil” with an “angel.” “What Deborah faced is something no employee, no matter their faith or lack of faith, should suffer,” said Harsh Voruganti, HAF associate director of Public Policy. “We demand a full inquiry into her dismissal from the US Air Force, as well as renewed commitments to protect the religious freedom of all military personnel and contractors.”
Indian doctor in dock for needless implants BY A STAFF WRITER UNSTER, IN-- As many as 293 patients of an IndianAmerican cardiologist around a small town in Indiana have filed lawsuits against him and two other doctors in his practice claiming that they performed needless procedures. The Indiana state Medicaid programme has started an investigation against Munster-based Dr. Arvind Gandhi and his partners, Dr. Wail Asfour and Dr. Satyaprakash Makam. The three doctors received nearly $5 million in combined Medicare payments in 2012, making them the three most reimbursed cardiologists in Indiana, it said. One doctor not named in the litigation as saying he had received a subpoena from the US attorney’s office and provided the medical charts of several former patients of Dr. Gandhi and his colleagues that he has since treated. Lawyers for Dr. Gandhi and his practice, Cardiology Associates of Northwest Indiana, said they had not received any subpoenas, and the doctors denied any wrongdoing.
M
Dr. Arvind Gandhi
The partners invested in real estate, including luxury apartments in Chicago, and a local restaurant. Besides the doctors, the malpractice lawsuits also name Community Hospital, where “Dr. Gandhi was a star”, through the foundation that oversees its operations, as a defendant. Dr. Gandhi was a high-ranking member of the medical staff at the hospital, and the lawsuits charge that the superfluous
procedures were done “with the authority and consent” of Community Hospital, it said. Lawyers for the hospital deny any wrongdoing. Lawyers for Dr. Gandhi, his practice and the hospital, say the lawsuits are without merit. The legal actions, they say, are being driven by envious physicians eager to take patients from Dr. Gandhi and by greedy lawyers seeking a big settlement. A whistle-blower lawsuit brought by a physician and a hospital employee against the hospital, Dr. Gandhi and his practice in 2008 raised similar accusations that the hospital had billed for unnecessary defibrillator and pacemaker implantations that were performed by doctors without the proper credentials to implant the devices. But the suit, eventually joined by the US attorney’s office in Hammond, Indiana, just north of Munster, was settled without anyone admitting wrongdoing. The hospital paid a $48,942 settlement. The hospital and the doctors say that the settlement shows that the issues have been investigated and that they have been absolved of many of the same allegations contained in the current malpractice suits.

Balaji temple of Aurora celebrates annual gala BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) temple of Aurora, Illinois celebrated the 29th annual Banquet and Fundraising event at Waterford Banquets in Elmhurst, Illinois on Saturday, October 12. The primary objective of this year’s fund-raising activities at the banquet was to collect funds and receive pledges for the renovation of temple’s Rajagopuram and Roofing. Rajagopuram is the ornate royal grandtower superstructure entrance to the temple. This superstructure, according to Hindu beliefs, is an object of high veneration and spiritual values. The gala event was attended by 350 devotees who enjoyed an evening with a variety of lip-smacking Indian food and cultural events. The temple management presented service awards for three priests and another temple employee for their dedicated service and loyalty to the temple. Judge denies birth papers to kids of illegal immigrants BY A STAFF WRITER EXAS -- A federal judge in Texas denied birth certificates for the US-born children of illegal immigrants, resulting in a subsequent lawsuit against the state. US District Judge Robert Pitman has ruled that Texas officials can continue to deny US birth certificates to the children of immigrants who cannot supply required identification because they entered the country illegally. “While the Court is very troubled at the prospect of Texas-born children, and their parents, being denied issuance of a birth certificate,” Pitman wrote in his decision, “Texas has a clear interest in protecting access to that document.” Although children born in the United States are entitled by law to US citizenship regardless of the immigration status of their parents, Texan authorities have actively attempting to thwart immigrants who have entered the country illegally and are seeking birth certificates for their US-born children. “Without their birth certificates, they are having difficulty gaining access to basic services, including school and medical care,” said Jennifer Harbury of Texas RioGrande Legal Aid Inc., who represents more than two dozen immigrant parents in South Texas who sued the state earlier this year on behalf of 32 children they claimed were denied birth certificates. “Without their birth certificates, they are having difficulty gaining access to basic services, including school and medical care,” Harbury said Friday. “Texas must allow a clear path for all children born in this country to gain access to birth certificates and their full rights as citizens. It may not establish an obstacle course for these children alone.”

Businessman pleads guilty in bribery case BY A STAFF WRITER LEVELAND, OH -- An East Cleveland businessman pleaded guilty on October 20 to trying to bribe a city councilman in an effort to obtain a beer and wine license. Per an agreement he reached with prosecutors, Mukundkumar Patel, 51, could face a recommended sentence of between two and two-and-a-half years in federal prison. US District Judge Christopher Boyko will have final say over Patel’s sentence. Patel is scheduled for sentencing on January. 20. Patel, the owner of McCall’s Motel on Euclid Avenue, wanted to add a Convenience Food Mart to his business and needed the license in order to sell beer and wine, according to court filings. He offered a bribe to Council Vice President Thomas Wheeler, a former Cleveland police officer, who reported the offer to the FBI and assisted agents with an investigation. Patel paid Wheeler $4,000 when the councilman showed up at his motel, charging documents state. What Patel did not know, though, was that Wheeler was recording their conversation for the FBI. Patel never got the license. Wheeler said in an interview in August that he had not met Patel prior to being offered the bribe and was offended that Patel would think he would accept the deal. On Tuesday, Patel said little more than “yes, sir” and “no, sir” when entering his plea in front of Magistrate Judge Greg White. He is free on bond until his sentencing. Patel’s recommended sentence was increased by six months because he knew about the Cuyahoga County corruption scandal, in which more than 60 politicians, government employees and contractors were convicted for giving and taking kickbacks, Assistant U.S. Attorney Antoinette Bacon said at the hearing.

In addition, they were asked provide a demonstration to the judges via live webcast and contribute to STEM education by
sharing their innovation with children and adults in their community. Just a few days ago, the dynamic foursome from Orange County, CA, Team GalacTECHs, got some much awaited news about their big win! With a passion for science and technology, their winning project used the VEX IQ Robotics platform and built a lunar landscape that features a resort that showcases state of the art features for its visitors. The ‘Four MOON Seasons’ is the brainchild of GalacTECH Getaways, a lunar tourism company powered by Team GalacTECHs. The winning teams will travel to Japan in October to meet up with the Google Lunar XPRIZE teams who are gathering for an annual Team Summit in Tokyo and share their idea and project with them. Team GalacTECHs will learn how these Google Lunar XPRIZE teams are planning to reach the Moon with their innovative robotic technology. “We are so excited about winning this competition. All our hard work over the summer paid off. “We can’t wait to go to Japan” said Aleena Ali (one the youngest members of the team) expressing her delight over the news. The team members are getting ready to embark on a once in a lifetime trip and meet the other winning teams from all over the world.

Search and rescue crews from Alameda County, Livermore and the park district officials searched over the weekend and even later.

items on display in perfect order. Countless selfless workers have been straining their every nerve to make sure the program marked by impeccable decorations was hugely successful. According to old-timers, Annakoot is celebrated in observance of the episode
in Sri Krishna’s childhood, in which He gave protection to the cowherd clan of Vrindavan from the wrath of Indra and humbled Indra in that process. The cowherds, their wives, children and
cattle jubilantly surrounded Sri Krishna. They were awed by His superhuman accomplishment and celebrated Sri Krishna’s feat with a sumptuous feast. Thus began the tradition of Annakoot.
Air Force sacks woman accused of witchcraft BY A STAFF WRITER A S H I N G TO N , D . C . - Leaders of the Hindu American Foundation have spoken out against the US Air Force’s dismissal of Deborah Schoenfeld, a Hindu woman accused of witchcraft by her co-workers.

M
Dr. Arvind Gandhi The partners invested in real estate, including luxury apartments in Chicago, and a local restaurant.

Nextt acquires patent for Alpha cotton fabric
BY A STAFF WRITER ALLAS , TX -- Nextt, a Dallasbased leader in the US home textile industry, has developed a new fabric category and been awarded a patent for a distinctive weaving process that combines polyester yarns with cotton in a unique way to create a highthread-count. Called ‘Alpha cotton,’ this luxurious fabric is primarily used to make sheets and is 30 to 40 per cent cheaper than 100 per cent cotton. Mumbai’s (India) Alok will be the leading manufacturer of the product, with Nextt poised as its official American marketing arm. Other suppliers will be able to buy the fabric directly from Alok or license the technology for their own use. Nextt CEO Arun Agarwal says this patent will allow for ‘explosive growth’ within the company in this category, which currently accounts for $1 billion in annual sales. “With this revolutionary fabric, we expect to double sales within two years.” Nextt, which is showcasing the Alpha cotton product at the New York Home Fashions Market this week, is a $500-million revenue, privately-held company that provides textiles to all of the major US retailers, including Dillard’s, Belk, Wal-Mart and Kohl’s. The company also has a robust portfolio of leading celebrity brands, such as Beautyrest, Ellen Tracy, Jessica McClintock and Royal Sateen.

Woman is arrested for taking Indians for ride BY A STAFF WRITER INDEN, NJ -- A Piscataway woman faces charges of scamming a 76-year-old city man out of $9,000 in a scheme that authorities say may be targeting IndianAmericans. Mahwish Chaudry, 31, was arrested September 25 for the scheme in which she told the victim he was in danger of losing his home, the police said. Last May, Chaudry called the man claiming she was employed by a financial company and that his home was in foreclosure. Police Capt. James Sarnicki said Chaudry then told him that she could drive him to the bank to make a cash withdrawal

and turn the money over to her to save his house. The victim complied and gave Chaudry $4,000 in cash.
Several days later, the woman called the victim again and said they needed more money to prevent the foreclosure . This time Chaudry was accompanied by a second woman, and the two of them drove him to a local bank where he withdrew $5,000 and gave it to them. The victim subsequently reported the incident to the police and Detective Kenneth Mikolajczyk investigated the case and obtained an arrest warrant for Chaudry. Chaudry was released pending a court hearing. The police believe that the scam may be occurring in the Indian-American community and has offered help to any other victim.

YOGA IN EARLY LIFE CUT

People who attended a resiliency-boosting program used considerably less health care services in the following year IANS, NEW YORK
S
trengthening your resilience with mindful meditation or yoga can help keep the doctors away, thereby reducing your health care cost, says a new study. Resilience can be enhanced with practice, starting with the relaxation response — a physiologic state of deep rest induced by practices such as rhythmic breathing, mindfulness meditation, yoga, tai chi or prayer, the study said. The researchers found that people who graduated from a resilien-
Yoga can help drug addicts NEW DELHI: Yoga can help addicts reduce dependency on drugs and improve the overall quality of their life, according to a new government study. The study was done at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). It has shown that the quality of life of drug users can be significantly improved and also the frequency of drug use can be reduced with the help of yoga interventions. The findings of the study, which involved 84 drug addicts, also suggested that the yoga intervention can be used as an adjunct to standard intervention to improve the quality of the life of drug users.
cy-boosting program used considerably less healthcare services in the year following the course compared with the year before. For the study, the researchers tested the efficacy of eight-week course developed by the BensonHenry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). The study compared health care used by more than 4,400 3RP graduates to that of 13,150 patients who did not take the 3RP course. In the year after training, use of healthcare services by the resiliency program graduates dropped by 43 percent.
Daytime nap boosts kids’ memory IANS, LONDON

iving children rewards and allowing them a short nap after a period of learning can significantly boost their ability to remember new facts and skills for a long period, new research suggests. Memories associated with a reward are reinforced by sleep, the findings showed. “Rewards may act as a kind of tag, sealing information in the brain during learning,” said lead researcher In a surprise Kinga Igloi from Unitest three versity of Geneva in months later, Switzerland. trained to “During sleep, that remember the sleep group information is favorpairs of picperformed ably consolidated over tures. better overall information associated Eight series with a low reward and is of pictures were transferred to areas of the brain shown and volunassociated with long-term memory,” teers were told that rememIgloi said. bering pairs in four of them would For the research, thirty-one elicit a higher reward. healthy volunteers were randomly Following a 90-minute break of assigned to either a sleep group or a either sleep or rest, they were tested ‘wake’ group and the sensitivity of on their memory for the pairs and both groups to reward was assessed asked to rate how confident they as being equal. Both groups’ performance was better for highly rewarded picture pairs, but the sleep group performed better overall. During the surprise test, participants who had slept after learning were selectively better for the highly rewarded pairs. The MRI scans revealed that the sleep group showed increased connectivity between the hippocampus, the medial prefrontal cortex and the striatum, areas of the brain implicated in memory consolidation and reward processing.
LONDON: Living in a neighborhood dotted with fast food outlets can be linked to poorer bone development in early childhood, a new report says. The researchers also found that greater neighborhood access to healthy specialty stores is linked to higher bone mass in young children. “These findings suggest that the exposure of mothers and children to more healthy food environments might optimize childhood bone development through its influence on the quality of the maternal diet and dietary choices during childhood,”
said study co-author Cyrus Cooper from the University of Southampton. The study looked at the bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) of 1,107 children at birth and at four and/or six years of age and compared the data to the number of supermarkets, healthy specialty stores and fast food outlets within a child’s neighborhood. After adjustments for other variables, they found that greater access to fast food outlets was associated with lower BMD and BMC in newborns.
