US may blacklist Chinese tech firm The move would effectively place Hikvision on US blacklist. The development is likely to inflame the tensions that has already escalated in Trump’s renewed trade war with China IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump’s administration is considering blacklisting a Chinese video surveillance giant from buying American technology, in a latest attempt to counter Beijing’s global economic ambitions, a media report said. The move would effectively place the company, Hikvision, on a US blacklist. This is for the first time, the Trump administration punished a Chinese company for its role in the surveillance and mass detention of the Uyghur Muslim ethnic minority, informed sources told The New York Times earlier this week. The development is also likely to inflame the tensions that have escalated in President Trump’s renewed trade war with Chinese leaders.

President Donald Trump has also taken steps to cripple the Chinese telecom equipment giant Huawei. (Photo: IANS)

Trump, in the span of two weeks, has raised tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods, threatened to tax all imports and taken steps to cripple the Chinese telecom equipment giant Huawei. China has promised to retaliate against American industries. Hikvision is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of video surveillance products. The company has said that its products enable their clients to track people around the country by their facial features, body characteristics or gait, or to monitor activity considered unusual by officials, such as people suddenly running or crowds gathering. The Commerce Department might require that American companies obtain government approval to supply components to Hikvision,

limiting the company’s access to technology that helps power its equipment. Administration officials could make a final decision in the coming weeks, the sources said. The potential crackdown stems from the Trump administration’s belief that China poses an economic, technological and geopolitical threat that cannot be left unchecked. China has used surveillance technology, including facial recognition systems and closed-circuit television cameras, to target the Turkic-speaking Uyghurs, who have accused the Chinese government of discriminating against their culture and religion, The New York Times reported. The country has exported this technology to nations that seek closer surveillance of their citizens, including Pakistan and the UAE.

Assange faces new espionage charges Barbara Barrett nominated IANS,WASHINGTON

T

he US Justice Department has filed 17 new charges against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is currently facing extradition from the UK, under the Espionage Act for his role in unlawfully encouraging, receiving and publishing national defense information in concert with former American Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning. Traditionally, the Justice Department has prosecuted government officials who leak classified information, but Thursday’s announcement that a federal grand jury had returned a fresh indictment against the distributor of sensitive documents marked the latest move by

US man autopilot plane to have sex with minor WASHINGTON: A 53-year-old millionaire trader could get 5-year jail term after pleading guilty to engaging in sex with a 15-year-old girl, once even putting his private plane in autopilot mode for the purpose. Stephen Bradley Mell, 53, of Bedminster, New Jersey, pleaded guilty to federal charges of engaging in interstate travel to engage in illicit sexual conduct in Dec 2018. Mell, a father-of-three, was accused of committing sex acts with the minor, whose mother had approached him so that he could give her flying lessons, the Daily Mail reported. —IANS

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

President Donald Trump’s administration to crack down on unauthorized disclosure of classified information and press freedoms, CNN reported. The new 18-count indictment handed down in the Eastern Dis-

trict of Virginia alleges that Assange actively solicited classified information, provoking Manning to obtain thousands of pages of classified material and providing the former with diplomatic State Department cables, Iraq war-related significant activity reports. In April, prosecutors in Virginia revealed that Assange had been charged with a single count of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion related to helping Manning obtain access to Defense Department computers in 2010. WikiLeaks responded to the news of the superseding indictment in a tweet, saying: “This is madness. It is the end of national security journalism and the First Amendment.”

to run US Air Force

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has nominated Barbara Barrett, a former US Ambassador to Finland and one-time Republican candidate for Arizona Governor, to serve as the next secretary of the Air Force. Barrett, 68, a wealthy Republican donor and wife of former Intel chief executive Craig Barrett, has served as the Chairman of the Aerospace Corp -- a non-profit corporation based in California that operates a federally funded research and development center for the space enterprise, the Washington Post reported. Trump made the announcement

on Twitter, saying: “She will be an outstanding Secretary!” Barrett was the US Ambassador to Finland from 2008 to 2009 under the George W. Bush Barbara Barrett administration. She also served on the board of the National Air and Space Museum, the Rand Corporation, Sally Ride Science and the Space Foundation. If confirmed, she will be the third woman in a row to serve in the top civilian position at the Air Force.

White House is ‘crying out for impeachment’: Pelosi IANS, WASHINGTON

H

ouse Speaker Nancy Pelosi has argued that the “White House is just crying out for impeachment” but that Democrats will continue to hold back on opening an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump until it’s “unavoidable”. “How we deal with it is a decision that our caucus makes, and our caucus is very much saying ‘whatever we do, we need to be ready when we do it’,” Pelosi said at her weekly news briefing on Thursday. voking Democrats into impeaching him because he thinks it will fire up his base ahead of the 2020

presidential election. Despite a more fervent push from members in her caucus this

week to open an impeachment inquiry, Pelosi continues to argue to Democrats that impeachment is “divisive” and the House is already on a steady course with their investigations. “It may take us to a place that is unavoidable in terms of impeachment or not,” she said in her Thursday briefing. “But we’re not at that place.” Her comments come a day after Trump on Wednesday abruptly left a White House meeting with Pelosi and other Democratic leaders over infrastructure, blasting her for using the word “cover-up” to describe the White House’s lack of cooperation with House investigations.

EY back on job for Air India sale The development comes close on the heels of Prime Minister’s Office directing the Aviation Ministry to speed up the process of strategic disinvestment of Air India and three of its subsidiaries NIRBHAY KUMAR, NEW DELHI

he government has put top consultancy firm EY to work for divesting its stake in flag carrier Air India and “quickly” issue expression of interest (EoI). “EY continues to be the transaction advisor for the sale of Air India. We have been directed to close the accounts for FY 2018-19 and provide updated data for EoI to take the disinvestment process forward,” said a senior Air India official. “Until the transaction gets completed EY is our advisor. They will be paid their fees after disinvestment process is complete. The instruction now is immediately start the process for EoI. Of

BRIEFS Modi can’t remove 370, 35A: Farooq JAMMU: National Conference President Farooq Abdullah on Friday said that no matter how powerful the electoral mandate of Prime Minister Narendra Modi might have been, he cannot remove Article 370 and 35A. Speaking to reporters here, he said: “No matter how powerful Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become after winning the Lok Sabha elections, he cannot remove Article 35A and Article 370 from the state of Jammu and Kashmir.” Commenting on the bad performance of the Congress in the general elections, Abdullah said Congress President Rahul Gandhi will win the Amethi seat after five years and stage a come back.

ED wants HC to cancel Vadra’s bail NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate has moved the Delhi High Court seeking to cancel the bail plea of Robert Vadra, the brother-in-law of Congress President Rahul Gandhi, in a money laundering case. Vadra was granted anticipatory bail by a trial court on April 1 on the condition that he must not leave the country without permission and join the investigation whenever needed. The ED, in his plea, has challenged the trial court order. The case relates to ownership of 1.9 million pounds of assets overseas by Vadra. It pertains to undisclosed foreign assets and entities meant to evade tax. —IANS

course, approval of the Union Cabinet will be required for it,” he added. The development comes close

on the heels of Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) directing the Aviation Ministry to speed up the process of strategic disinvestment

of Air India and three of its subsidiaries. In a letter to Air India Chairman Ashwani Lohani, Civil Aviation Secretary Pradeep Singh Kharola had advised to finalize the financials of Air India and its subsidiaries by end of June, 2019. “Also, the accounts for FY 201819 would form the basis of bidding. Therefore, it is necessary that they are prepared with utmost cau-

tion so as to reflect the correct financial status,” Kharola had written in the letter which has been reviewed by IANS. The Aviation Secretary directed the airline to get contingent liabilities and account receivables verified thoroughly besides a physical verification of the inventories. A list of pending litigations is also required to be drawn up. The government had last year initiated the process to sell majority 74 per cent stake in the national carrier but the plan proved a damp squib with no private investor turning up for the offer. In view of rising fuel price and weak investment environment, the government had put the process on hold maintaining that it would be taken up after Lok Sabha elections 2019.

BJP bid to corner Kamal Nath fizzles out IANS, BHOPAL

T

he BJPs attempts to embarrass the Congress with a floor test in Madhya Pradesh have all but fizzled out with the partys central leadership not supporting the local leaders on the issue. Earlier this week, the leader of the Opposition, Gopal Bhargav had written a letter to Governor Anandiben Patel requesting her to convene a special session of the state assembly. Bhargava, a veteran of the House since 1984, obviously acted in haste by shooting off a letter to the Governor. The procedure for convening the sessions, special or ordinary, is clear. The government seeks the governor’s permission to convene the session by a communication sent through the Vidhan Sabha secretariat.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath. (File Photo: IANS)

Insiders say Bhargav has been admonished by the party’s central leadership for going to the press over the issue. Action followed former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s report to the central leaders. Chouhan had also spoken to

some television channels over the issue. “We want to discuss issues of critical importance in the special session and we would also see whether this government can sustain itself through the division of votes on financial matters,” Bhar-

The making of the dreaded ‘Zakir Musa’ SHEIKH QAYOOM, SRINAGAR

T

he journey of Zakir Rashid Bhat, from a well-to-do middle class family of Noorpora village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Tral area, to becoming ‘Zakir Musa’ or the most wanted militant in Kashmir reads like a Bollywood blockbuster. Seeing his father Abdul Rashid Bhat serve the state government as an engineer, his brother Shakir

Rashid Bhat as an orthopaedic surgeon and his sister Shaheena Rashid Bhat as a bank officer encouraged Zakir Bhat to study hard to become an engineer himself. He moved to Chandigarh to study engineering. But in 2013, Zakir’s best friend Idrees persuaded him to join the militant ranks. Zakir abandoned studies at Chandigarh without telling his family that he was going to take a oneway road to become a ‘shaheed’.

Zakir Musa was killed on May 23.

He found contacts to meet Burhan Wani who was becoming the poster boy of militancy in Kashmir. Burhan Wani was killed on July 8, 2016 in Anantnag district, triggering widespread violence.

gav had told newsmen on Monday. Charges and counter charges flew thick and fast over the BJP’s attempt to pull down the Kamal Nath government. On Tuesday Kamal Nath claimed that the BJP was trying to lure the ruling party legislators. Addressing the media, he said all MLAs were in touch with him and that he had full faith in them. We have already faced the floor test and are ready for it again. Exit polls have become a source of entertainment now. The BJP is trying to sustain the party member’’ morale with such tactics, he said. It was not just the leader of the Opposition who displayed undue haste. The party’s national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya had also claimed that the government would not last once Modi returned to power. Zakir now became the new hero for militants and their overground supporters. But he was disgruntled with the Hizbul Mujahideen and parted ways. A statement released on July 27, 2017 by the Global Islamic Media Front, an Al Qaeda-affiliated information network, said that Al Qaeda had created a cell in Jammu and Kashmir called ‘Ansar Ghazwatul Hind’ headed by Zakir Musa. After this announcement, Zakir became the most wanted militant commander in Kashmir. Authorities did not confirm the killing of Zakir on Thursday. Zakir’s brother was the first to confirm that he was dead. Highly placed sources further confirmed this to IANS on Thursday.

LS polls establish national identity, right to equality

Muslims also serve who only stand & wait It was Rajiv Gandhi who broke Ram Temple locks, promised Ram Rajya from Ayodhya on the eve of 1989 elections SAEED NAQVI, NEW DELHI

I

ndia’s 187 million Muslims deserve a round of applause for the diligent docility with which they have allowed themselves to be the “other” against which the divisions within Hindu society have been composed into an ever increasing expanse of saffron. In geological time there will also be harmony in this expanse. By stealth, the Congress created the platform from which the BJP is now finishing the game with a flourish. We must not forget, it was Rajiv Gandhi who broke locks of the Ram Temple, promised Ram Rajya from Ayodhya on the eve of 1989 elections and allowed the brick laying ceremony for the Ram Temple in total violation of a court verdict and so on. The seed of what we are witnessing today was sowed at the very outset, in 1947. My school friend, the late Vinod Mehta, as honest an editor as ever entered the once hallowed profession, put his finger on the nub of the matter. “We have had 800 years of Muslim rule, 200

years of British rule and we have given the Muslims a brand new country, Pakistan.” Having known Vinod as a buddy for 60 years, I knew exactly where he was coming from. The full import of that conversation would take up a book. Let me

Narendra Modi appeared on the scene when the post 9/11 world was in the grip of wild Islamophobia. Modi saw advantage in sailing with this current. come to the point on which we came to an agreement in the sense that we lowered our voices. If the Congress was so fiercely opposed to the two-nation theory which stated that Hindus and Muslims constituted two nations, how did it suddenly accept the creation of a Muslim Pakistan? Clearly a vast majority of Hindus would feel cheated because if Pakistan was

kosher, so too should Hindustan have been? Jawaharlal Nehru insisted on secularism to which his colleagues opposed. Purushottam Das Tandon, Babu Rajendra Prasad, Vallabhbhai Patel never shared Nehru’s vision. Former Prime Minister V.P. Singh, for political reasons, implemented the Mandal Commission report, “reserving” government jobs for the “Other Backward Classes” (OBCs). BJP’s Atal Bihari Vajpayee. as Prime Minister, moderated the national mood by accelerating relations with Pakistan, reaching out to Kashmir and being on talking terms with Muslims. He lost in 2004, opening the way to Manmohan Singh’s 10 years as PM. Modi appeared on the scene when the post 9/11 world was in the grip of wild Islamophobia. Modi saw advantage in sailing with this current. In his very first speech in Parliament in May 2014, Modi took upon his shoulders the task of lifting the Hindus “from 1,200 years of ghulami”, which means “serfdom” or “subjugation”.

DC PATHAK, NEW DELHI

T

he Lok Sabha election of 2019 generated a lot of sparks and fury by way of personal attacks, recourse to undignified language and abandoning of the political narrative for tactical use of stray events for some perceived advantage in the immediate term. With the shrinking of the Congress beyond recognition as an all-India party in 2014, the election this time pushed up the visibility of regional parties — the product of the phenomenon of caste-based politics that was so characteristic of India. They filled some of the space vacated by the Congress and this, in a way, facilitated a decisive advance of the BJP as a national party — the organizational consolidation of this cadre-based party was in any case being ensured by Amit Shah, the new BJP President. The prolonged electioneering helped to spread the presence of BJP to new areas and establish Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the best known political leader at the national level. In a distorted narrative the opposition tried to make out that it is the Modi government that had failed to protect women against the offenses of rape and molestation. Beyond the fact of loss of jobs in the unorganized sector because of demonetization, fault lines if any in the economic policy of the Modi government were not defined by the opponents - their campaign progressively became

focused on launching personalized criticism of the Prime Minister. At the mass level, the image of Modi as a leader remained intact. Another learning from this General Election was that the opposition generally shied away from emphasizing Indian nationalism in the belief that this gave advantage to the BJP and made the minorities uncomfortable with the reality that this country was, population wise, a Hindu majority nation. The fact, however, is that the Hindus were traditionally divided so much on caste, language and

The opposition’s campaign was focused on launching personalized criticism of the PM region. In the face of a highly divided majority the opposition focused on the votes of the large minority as a matter of practical politics. On the whole, the debates in the run-up to this election created an atmosphere of communal disharmony. The polls did manage, notwithstanding the shallowness of campaign by the parties in the fray, to prove that all Indians enjoyed an equality of right in the matter of deciding how their country will be governed. The pattern of street violence during electioneering threatened this right in some areas and the nation must find a way of not letting that happen in future.

Brexit-hit May to quit in June She took over from David Cameron after he resigned the day after the Brexit referendum 7th of June, so that a successor can be chosen, I’ve agreed... that the process for electing a new leader should begin in the following week.

U

K Prime Minister Theresa May announced on Friday that she will step down as the leader of the ruling Conservative Party on June 7, paving the way for a leadership battle to appoint Britain’s next Prime Minister. May, who has come under increased pressure from her own party to announce her departure date amid internal schisms over her handling of Brexit, gave a speech outside Downing Street after meeting with her government’s Chief Whip Julian Smith, the lawmaker in charge of trying to keep party unity in Parliament. Fighting tears, May said: “I believe it was right to persevere

Over 250 held in Indonesia after protests JAKARTA: At least 257 people were arrested following deadly protests in the Indonesian capital against the re-election of President Joko Widodo for a second five-year term, police said on Thursday. At least six people were killed died and more than 200 have been wounded since the riots started on Tuesday night, reports Efe news. The clashes between police and hundreds of followers of the losing candidate, former army general Prabowo Subianto, have paralysed central Jakarta for two days. On Wednesday night, protesters threw flares, stones and other objects at the riot police, who responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and selective arrests outside the headquarters of the Elections Supervisory Agency and the surrounding areas. Jakarta Police spokesperson Prabowo Argo Yuwono told the media that the arrests were made in connection to the destruction of public property and inciting violence. The fatalities resulted from bullet wounds and blunt objects, according to the police, who denied the use of live ammunition and accused the rioters of using firearms. The official number of those wounded is 200. Although sources from several hospitals told the official Indonesian news agency Antara that that figure exceeds 350. Many of whom have already been discharged. —IANS

“It is and will always remain a matter of deep regret to me that I have not been able to deliver Brexit. It will be for my successor to seek a way forward that honours the referendum. To lead, he or she will have to find consensus in parliament where I have not.” May’s Brexit withdrawal bill has been rejected three times in the

House of Commons. She ended her speech saying: “I will shortly leave the job that it has been the honour of my life to hold. The second female prime minister, but certainly not the last. “I do so with no ill will, but with enormous and enduring gratitude to have had the opportunity to serve the country I love.” She took over from David Cameron when he resigned the day after the Brexit referendum in June 2016. Her announcement came after a meeting with Graham Brady, the chair of the backbench 1922 Committee - which was prepared to trigger a second no-confidence vote in her leadership if she refused to resign. Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt called her a “true public servant”.

he prospects of Iranian attacks on US forces in the Middle East have been put “on hold”, acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan has said after the Donald Trump administration deployed an aircraft carrier strike group and B-52 bombers in the region. “I think our steps were very prudent and we’ve put on hold the potential for attacks on Americans by Iran or its allies,” Shanahan told reporters at the Pentagon this week. “And that’s what’s extremely important.” “I just hope Iran is listening. We’re in the region to address many things but it is not to go to a war with Iran.” The administration sought to assure lawmakers in classified brief-

ustralia’s Liberal-National Coalition, led by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, was preparing for its third consecutive term, though it was not known whether it would be able to form the government on its own or will need alliances. There was no doubt that Morrison would direct the executive, a position he has occupied since August, espe-

cially after opposition Labour leader Bill Shorten admitted defeat. The conservative politician, a man who always believed in “miracles” as he said in his acceptance speech, and now a hero of the Liberal Party, conducted an effective election campaign on social networks to reach the “silent” citizens, for which he has promised to work. “Voters don’t want action against climate change if it is perceived as a cost to the economy,” said Adrian

I would consider that a hold,” Shanahan said, adding that “doesn’t mean that the threats that we’ve previously identified have gone away”. Some lawmakers pressed administration officials to be more open with the American public about potential threats of Iranian hostility and the US response. “I think that would be helpful. I think one of the criticisms that was bipartisan was they didn’t talk to us,” said Senator Lindsey Graham after the classified briefing. Senator Dan Sullivan said: “One of the things I mentioned in my remarks was that it would be useful, that some of this could be talked about more publicly, that would not reveal sources and methods.” support in Queensland, which is rich in mining resources and where there is a proposal to develop a coal mine, despite having a regional Labour government. Morrison became Prime Minister in August after snatching the post from Malcolm Turnbull in a leadership struggle within the Liberal Party. The vote was the third consecutive elections won by the Liberal-National Coalition after victories in 2013 and 2016. Morrison’s formation could obtain 76 seats against 69 of the Labour Party, whereas three minority parties and three independent legislators could obtain a deputy each in the House of Representatives, according to the Australian Electoral Commission projections.

Modi retains power, Oppn mauled The Bharatiya Janata Party bagged 303 seats as NDA cruised to 353 seats; The Congress Party reduced to 52 seats in the 2019 Parliamentary elections IANS, NEW DELHI

I

n a stunning electoral showing, the BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi retained power for another five years after making a sweep of the Lok Sabha battle and mauling the opposition. So stunning was the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) showing that it bulldozed the opposition even where it had looked strong, virtually sweeping entire states in northern India and even beyond and making unprecedented inroads in Trinamool Congress-ruled West Bengal. The BJP alone bagged 303 seats -- more than the 282 it won in 2014, catapulting Modi as Prime Minister for the first time. Along with its allies, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) could end up with 353 of the 542 Lok Sabha seats where polling took place. The BJP decimated the Mamata Banerjee led ruling dispensation Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. To the eight years of Trinamool at the helm the Amit Shah-led BJP pulled up the biggest upset, falling just short of three seats to the TMC’s figure. The final tally of 42

seats: BJP- 18, TMC- 21, Congress-3. In Uttar Pradesh, the saffron party made a huge comeback improving its tally to 62, the SPBSP Mahagathbandhan managed 5 and 10, respectively, while Congress somehow was spared the royal humiliation, as UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s Rae Bareli seat remained with the party, while others got 2.

Maharashtra where the ruling BJP has not had a very happy bon homie with its ally Shiv Sena, it managed 23 seats, while Sena 18, Sharad Pawar led NCP got 4, Congress won the lone seat in Chandrapur defeating Union Minister Hansraj Ahir, and others two. In Bihar, the BJP-JD-U, got 17 and 16 respectively, while the Congress again managed only one seat

that of the Kishanganj constituency. The others bagged 6. The biggest upset was for the jailed RJD supremo Lalu Prasad, whose Rashtriya Janata Dal could not manage even a single seat amid the bickering among his sons. In the national capital and Uttarakhand, it was BJP all the way as it managed all seven seats and five seats.

It sweeped Gujarat, Haryana and Himachal as well, bagging all 26, 10 and 4 seats, respectively. BJP won 28 of 29 Madhya Pradesh seats and 24 of 25 in Rajasthan. Barring Chhindwara that returned the sole Congress candidate Nakul Nath, the BJP swept all including the Guna seat held by Congress General Secretary Jyotiraditya Scindhia. The Congress’ presence in the north was only defined by eight seat win in the Captain Amarinder singh led Punjab, where the BJP and Akali’s managed two seats each. The Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party was one of the greatest casualties, that manged only one seat by Bhagwant Mann in Sangrur. In Tamil Nadu, the DMK made a comeback with 23 of the 38 seats in contention, as voting was cancelled for the Vellore seat. Congress won 8, while the AIADMK managed only one. While the BJP could not open its account in the state, the others got 6. In Odisha the battle went to the wire, but the Naveen Patnaik led BJD bagged 11 of 21, while BJP make gains with 9 seats bettering its previous hold and the Congress got one.

Be it the Mulayam Singh Yadav clan in Uttar Pradesh, Lalu Prasad’s family in Bihar, the Hooda family in Haryana or the Pawars of Maharashtra, the going has been rough. Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda, son of former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Hooda, was trailing narrowly in Rohtak. His father lost in Sonipat. In Haryana’s epic battle of dynasts witnessed in Hisar, BJP candidate Brijendra Singh, son of former Union Minister Birender Singh, defeated Dushyant Chautala, grandson of former CM Om Prakash Chautala and Bhavya Bishnoi, the third generation of former CM Bhajan Lal’s family. In Uttar Pradesh, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leader Ajit Singh and his son Jayant Choudhary were staring at defeat. Even in the Yadav clan,

Dimple Yadav, wife of Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav, was trailing in Kannauj. In Badaun, Mulayam Milind Deora, son Singh Yadav’s of Congress leader, nephew Dharthe late Murli mendra Yadav Deora, lost from was trailing, Mumbai South. so was another nephew Akshay Yadav from Firozabad. methi snapped its 39 years long relationship with the Gandhi family -- a relationship that was filled with emotions and nurtured with emotions. The victory of BJP’s Smriti Irani by over 55,000 votes and defeat of Rahul Gandhi is not just the result of an electoral battle -- it is much more than that. Bechu Khan, a businessman in Jagdishpur, aptly summed up the result when he said: “Amethi is witnessing a generational shift. The new generation has little room for emotions and is more concerned about its future which they saw in Smriti Irani and the BJP. “This new generation has not seen Rajiv Gandhi connect with the local people. They have not seen how Sanjay Gandhi made Amethi important so they do not have an emotional relationship with the Gandhi family.” For the people of Amethi, development has rarely been an issue. “For us, the identity was more important. Wherever we went across the country and said that we were from Amethi, we would get respect and local Congressmen

The local people say that it is the young voters who are responsible for electing Smriti Irani. Irani kept campaigning in Amethi even after she lost the seat in

2014 by a margin of over one lakh votes. She would regularly visit the constituency and point out Rahul Gandhi’s absence. People from Amethi had easy access to her in Delhi, too. Amethi was first won by the Congress in 1980 and has remained with the Congress, barring one year when the BJP won the seat.

Will not work with bad intentions: Modi A IANS, NEW DELHI

ccepting the resounding poll victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday promised that he will not work with “bad intentions” and that he would like to move ahead by taking everyone along, leaving behind the bitterness witnessed during the Lok Sabha campaign. With bigger mandate, comes greater responsibility... I will not do anything with bad intention and and will do nothing for myself, says a beaming Narendra Modi

Modi tsunami claims middle India IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he Bharatiya Janata Party has effected a redrawing of its support base that now spreads beyond the Hindi heartland to include at least 10 states that form its core. The results of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections show that Middle India is now firmly in the BJP’s kitty and comprises Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. There are two noteworthy states on this list -- Odisha and West Bengal, ones outside the Hindi heartland but now part of the BJP’s support base. Thus far they had been islands, ringfenced from direct BJP influence because of some essential cultural differences between what comprised the way of life of traditional BJP supporters and people in these states. That wall has been breached with these elections. In West Bengal and Odisha, the BJP followed a set strategy. It built its organizational muscle in these states by bringing in leaders from existing parties who, in turn,

brought their foot soldiers with them. It then aggressively sold the idea of Modi -- a strong leader, the Modi model of development and nationalism. In West Bengal, the BJP was helped by the eclipse of the Left and the fact that there was a large Muslim population, which helped to generate positive sentiment on

the question of Hindu pride. Uttar Pradesh is the nerve-centre of the BJP support base. The mahagathbandhan of Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal appeared to be a roadblock in its way. The Kairana Lok Sabha by-election of May 2018, which it won, was expected to be a laboratory test for the

mahagathbandhan. But in this election, the BJP was building from a base of 40 per cent vote share in 2014. That vote share also included a share of the OBC and Jatav vote -- people who were attracted by the BJP’s message of muscular nationalism and Hindu machismo. In the end, the mahagathbandhan was not very successful in containing a BJP surge in Uttar Pradesh. In the remaining the states, including the ones where it recently lost power in state assembly polls, the party was able to galvanise its existing organization while lining up behind the Modi brand to win the states. The BJP and before that the BJS were evidently long-term players. That explains why the party has expanded, over time, from the Hindi heartland to the Northeast where it had never been in power before this, and now to Odisha and West Bengal. In the interim there was a brief stint in Jammu and Kashmir. The next project, very clearly, is the conquest of southern India, where it has only had a government in Karnataka and had NDA partners from Tamil Nadu.

NDA gained most in rural east

A deep dive into the Lok Sabha election results brings out a clear picture of how the nation voted in a historic verdict in favor of Narendra Modi IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he BJP made major gains in rural constituencies of east India and lost the most in rural north. A deep dive into the Lok Sabha election results brings out a clear picture of how the nation voted in a historic verdict in favor of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) increased its tally from 40 to 64 in rural east. The story was different in rural north where the number of seats for NDA came down from 70 to 56 despite a 10 percent increase in the vote share. For the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), major gains were in rural and semi-urban south. In rural south, the UPA had a gain of 10 and in semi-urban south it rose by 20. In rural east, the Congress-led UPA lost 7 and others 17. NDA lost a seat and a vote share

of 3 to 4 per cent in urban northeast. But in rural and semi urban northeast, the NDA won 3 additional seats and its vote share went up by 3 to 5 per cent. Across east and semi-urban north, others lost 16 seats and 7-8 per cent vote share respectively. The results show that NDA found connect with rural India against the notion that the villagers were under distress. Even if they faced major problems, the voters felt that the solution lay with Prime Minister Modi. The BJP alone won 303 Lok Sabha seats on its own. The NDA won 39 out of 40 seats in Bihar, BJP won 11 seats in Jharkhand, 18 in West Bengal, 9 in Assam, both seats in Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura and 8 in Odisha. The numbers also showed that there was not much rural-urban divide as was being perceived.

Is it the end of caste politics in UP?

LUCKNOW: The caste arithmetic in Uttar Pradesh has fallen flat on its face and the SP-BSP-RLD alliance has nothing left to cheer about. The alliance that was forged in January this year had claimed to trounce the BJP in Uttar Pradesh and, thereby, halt its return to power. The alliance with less than 20 seats has been left powerless. Brand Modi has dissolved that caste arithmetic. The Samajwadi Party that was reeling under the impact of the prolonged family feud, stitched up the alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party, putting aside the hostilities of the past. Its arithmetic was simple — 40

per cent OBCs and 21 per cent Dalits in the state would come together to write history. The Bahujan Samaj Party, which had failed to win even a single seat in 2014 and ended up with just 19 seats in the 2017 Assembly polls, also saw magic in this arithmetic and agreed to the alliance. The BJP, however, upset all calculations when it focused its attention on non-Yadav OBCs and nonJatav Dalits. The party quietly wooed these caste groups and turned the arithmetic around. Prime Minister Narendra Modi created a class war that replaced caste war when he said, “My caste is the caste of the poor.”

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) increased its tally from 40 to 64 in rural east.

CWC to deliberate on debacle IANS, NEW DELHI

A

meeting of Congress Working Committee is expected to be held soon to look into reasons for the partys debacle in the Lok Sabha elections with party chief Rahul Gandhi expected to give his assessment of what went wrong and the remedial steps that need to be taken. It is the second successive debacle for the Congress in Lok Sabha elections and Gandhi had been a prominent face in both the elections. Gandhi lost from the family’s pocket borough of Amethi in a shocking defeat that will have implications for the party’s revival plans in Uttar Pradesh and his own political standing as a leader. He won from Kerala’s Wayanad. Sources said that the CWC, the party’s highest decision making body, is expected to meet on May 25. There was speculation that Gandhi had offered to resign following the results but the party denied it. Asked at a press conference if he would resign, Gandhi said: “We will have a meeting of the Working Committee. That you can leave between me and the Working Committee.” Ahead of the CWC meeting, the party has to decide on its course of action including whether Gandhi should step down. Even as Gandhi has taken

Congress President Rahul Gandhi addressing a press conference in New Delhi with Congress leaders Ahmed Patel and Randeep Singh Surjewala. (Photo: IANS)

responsibility for the defeat, party leaders have said that no individual can be blamed for the outcome. The party finished at its second lowest tally in its history and is only marginally better than the 44 seats in 2014. The results show that Gandhi, who became party chief in 2017, has not been able to galvanise the party enough to make it a fighting unit against the BJP which has been turned into an election winning machine by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah. Congress suffered in most states and failed to dent the BJP in the Hindi heartland states. The party’s poor electoral strategy has allowed

BJP to become a dominant force in West Bengal and strengthen itself in Karnataka where it was relatively weak. Gandhi indicated that the road for the party is long and tough and asked party workers and leaders not to lose heart. He did not go into reasons for the party’s debacle. “Today is the day of the mandate and I don’t want to color the decision of the people of India by getting into a long conversation with you about what I think went wrong. Today it doesn’t matter what I think went wrong. People of India have decided that Narendra Modi is going to be Prime Minister and as an Indian, I fully respect people’s verdict,” he said.

Modi’s mega oath-taking ceremony likely on May 30 Before his swearing-in, Narendra Modi is likely to visit Varanasi to thank the people of his constituency IANS, NEW DELHI

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi may be sworn-in for the second term on May 30 and some world leaders could be invited for it, making it an event bigger than the 2014 when heads of governments of SAARC countries were invited, sources said here on Friday. Before his swearing-in, Modi is likely to visit Varanasi to thank the people of the parliamentary constituency from where he has been elected for the second time with a huge margin of 4,75,754 votes. Modi polled a total of 6,69,602 votes while his nearest rival, Shalini Yadav of the Samajwadi Party (SP), got 1,93,848. Ajay Rai of the Congress got 1,51,800 votes. In 2014, Modi won from Varanasi by a margin of 3.37 lakh votes. He is also likely to visit Gandhinagar to take blessings of his

mother Heera Ben. Sources in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said the Prime Minister is in no hurry for the swearingin as he wants to invite some world leaders for the event to send a message across the globe about how the general elections embodied the

strength of Indian democracy, the largest in the world. Earlier in 2014, Modi had invited the heads of governments of all the eight South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) member countries for his swearing-

in at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. After leading the party to a resounding victory in the Lok Sabha polls, the Prime Minister has received congratulatory messages and telephone calls from leaders across the world, including US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and French President Emmanuel Macron. Sources in the BJP said the newlyelected MPs have been asked to reach Delhi by May 25 evening. A meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Party to formally elect Modi as its leader is likely to take place on May 25 or 26. The sources said the party will stake claim to form the government same day and oath taking ceremony is likely to take place after that.

BJP’s rise sounds alarm for TRS in Telangana

Telangana BJP chief K Laxman.

NEW DELHI: As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged four of the 17 seats in Telangana, an alarm has been sounded to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which emerged as the largest party in the state with nine seats. While vote share of both the BJP and TRS increased from the 2014 general elections, the latter’s seat count declined by two. The TRS’s share in total votes polled is 41.3% as against 34.9% in 2014. On the other hand, BJP almost doubled its base in the state as its vote share increased to 19.5% from 10.5%. Congress has bagged three seats - an increase of one seat from the last time. Its vote share increased from 24.7% in 2014 to 29.5% in 2019. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), led by Asaduddin Owaisi, won two seats with vote share of 2.78%.

s the BJP made stunning inroads in the Trinamool Congress-ruled West Bengal, winning an unprecedented 18 out of 42 Lok Sabha constituencies, IANS takes a look at the top five generals of the saffron outfit in Bengal who helped the party cut deep into Mamata Banerjee’s bastion. KAILASH VIJAYVARGIYA The BJP started devising its strategy for the state soon after the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, appointing Kailash Vijayvargiya as the party General Secretary in-charge of West Bengal. Vijayvargiya, an astute politician from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, played a pivotal role in BJP’s growth in Bengal and worked as a bridge between the party’s state and central leadership. Leading from the front, he was at the forefront of a number of protest demonstrations organized by the BJP against the Bengal government, even sustaining injury once. The 63-year-old former Madhya Pradesh Minister played a key role from behind the scenes in poaching Mukul Roy from the Trinamool and provided him the

much-needed backing to ensure the defection of a number of leaders from the ruling party in the state, several of whom were made candidates in the Lok Sabha elections.

even the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal. He helped remove the BJP’s organizational shortcomings in the state and gave leadership in setting up a well-oiled election machinery by putting in place teams to ensure strong booth-level organizations. The duo also put Suresh Pujari - one of the party’s national secretaries in Odisha -- in charge of the western districts of Bengal.

SHIV PRAKASH A Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) pracharak loaned to the BJP, Shiv Prakash is now one of the joint General Secretaries (organisation) in the party helping General Secretary (organisation) Ram Lal coordinate with the RSS. Given special responsibilities to look into the organizational matters in West Bengal as an assistant to Vijayvargiya, Shiv Prakash worked to strengthen the RSS branches and

MUKUL ROY Former Trinamool Congress MP and party’s second in-command after Mamata Banerjee, Mukul Roy joined the saffron camp in 2017. Over the last one-and-a-half years,

the seasoned politician played perhaps the most significant role in taking advantage of the erosion and discontent within the state’s ruling party. Roy, well known for his organizational skills and close connect with the Trinamool’s grassroot level leaders, was given the responsibility of the chief election strategist by the BJP in Bengal. And he did not disappoint. Being an old lieutenant of Banerjee and one of the key architects of the party’s rise in the state back in 2011 when the Trinamool came to power after overthrowing the Left Front regime, Roy helped spread the BJP’s reach to the grassroots level of North 24 Parganas and Nadia, besides luring a number of Trinamool MPs and MLAs to the BJP. Barrackpore MLA Arjun Singh, Cooch Behar youth leader Nisith Pramanik, Bolpur MP Anupam Hazra and Bishnupur MP Soumitra Khan -- all came to the saffron camp at Roy’s behest and were given tickets for the Lok Sabha polls. Singh, Khan and Pramanik have won from their respective constituencies, while Hazra finished second from the tough Jadavpur seat.

DILIP GHOSH State BJP President Dilip Ghosh was also pivotal in rejuvenating the party after taking charge. Known for his provocative speeches, Ghosh is extremely popular among the party activists for his straight as an arrow attitude and his ability to call a spade a spade. Ghosh, who worked as the incharge of RSS in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, was chosen as the party’s Bengal unit President in 2015. In 2016, he fought the state Assembly elections from Kharagpur Sadar and defeated veteran Congress leader Gyan Singh Sohanpal. He tasted yet another success this time, when he won the difficult Midnapore Lok Sabha seat defeating veteran politician Manas Bhunia of the Trinamool. Ghosh was involved in the process of short-listing the Bengal candidates’ list for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls that was sent to the party’s central committee in Delhi. ARVIND MENON BJP’s national executive member and Bengali speaking RSS pracharak Arvind Menon worked to strengthen the grassroots level organization from Darjeeling to Malda.

New Asian American Employee Survey Shows Lower Satisfaction enhance their presentation skills. The gender representation in this survey was approximately equal between women and men, with 0.1 percent identifying as transgender. Almost half of the respondents were Gen X (born between 1965-1981) which may explain the cultural mismatch, followed with millennials (born in 1982-2000), and baby boomers (born in 1946-1964). Almost 60 percent of them have been with their employer for more than five years.

BY DR. NILESH.D.MEHTA NEW YORK, NY— Results from Asia Society’s 2019 Asian Corporate Survey, which examines the perceptions and lived realities of Asian Pacific American (APA) employees in the U.S. workplace, show a slight but steady decrease over the last two years in Asian and APA employee satisfaction with professional growth opportunities at their companies, while some companies have notably made progress in their workplace diversity practices and initiatives. Published by Asia Society today, the Executive Summary from Asia Society’s tenth annual Asian Corporate Survey analyzes how APA employees in the United States evaluate the performance of their companies across five key dimensions: Diversity, Professional Growth, Employee Resource Groups, Workplace and Work-Life Insights, and Overall Satisfaction and Belonging. More than 2,500 employees participated in the survey, which included over 500 non-APA employees in order to provide greater context for comparison and benchmarking in how they viewed their companies. Almost 70 percent of APA survey respondents identified themselves as first generation. Close to half of the respondents are in technical roles, while 3.4 percent are on the chief executive level. Two main findings from this report:` 4Job Satisfaction The decrease in job satisfaction, while not precipitous, is still notable as APA employee favorability was trending upwards prior to 2017 in the four-year study. Many APA respondents, in significant contrast to their non-APA counterparts, noted a shortage of company executives and directors from their cultural background and a lack of leadership development opportunities for them.

4About Asia Society Asia Society is the leading educational organization dedicated to promoting mutual understanding of Asia in a global context and strengthening partnerships among peoples, leaders and institutions across the fields of arts, business, culture, education, and policy. Founded in 1956, Asia Society is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, educational institution based in New York with state-of-the-art cultural centers and gallery spaces in Hong Kong and Houston, and offices in Los Angeles, Manila, Mumbai, San Francisco, Seoul, Shanghai, Sydney, Tokyo, Washington, D.C., and Zurich.

4Sense of Belonging APA respondents also cited that they did not feel a strong sense of belonging in the workplace, sometimes due to differences between their personal upbringings and American work culture. For example, one APA survey respondent cited cultural differences in communication styles, noting“our traditional culture of being humble, reserved, and a team player when practiced in a professional setting tends to be misunderstood for being timid, quiet, and lacking in leadership.”.

Enriching Evening With Immersive Music at St. Louis Bach Festival 2019

BY A STAFF WRITER ST LOUIS, MO- Bal Vihar of St. Louis were participated in St. Louis BACH Festival 2019 on May 16, 2019. Bach Society of St. Louis is dedicated to providing stimulating and enriching musical and education experience for audiences and performers. The evening was filled with inspirational music and was a display of talent at full scale. Bal Vihar Youth students performed 2 popular vocals – “Aa Chal Ke Tujhe” and “Suraj Ki Garmi” under the direction of Bal Vihar music teachers. The first song was about peace and harmony. The second song was about finding peace through prayer. The rendering by these youth students was phenomenal considering very little time that they had to practice as a group. The event took place at Bonhomme Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, MO. Performance by Bal Vihar students was a preview to a performance by a renowned vocal artist – Saprano Sherezade Panthaki. Born and raised in India, Sprano Panthaki is a distinguished and world famous vocal artist who is frequently called upon for vocal master classes at Universities and Schools across US. It was a pleasure to hear

Saprano perform at the Bach Society. A group from Sangeeta St. Louis also performed at the event. Sangeetha is a non-profit group that has been promoting Indian Classical Music for last 25 years. It partners with several local, regional and international organizations and talents to bring enriching concerts to St. Louis. The distinguished history of the Bach Society began in 1941, when Dr. William Heyne determined to offer the people of St. Louis the opportunity to perform and hear the great music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Since that date, the Society has carried out its mission without interruption, and is St. Louis’ oldest continuous choral society. and bringing Bach to St. Louis community for the Bach Society over 75 years. Center for Indian Cultural Education - Bal Vihar of St. Louis is a cultural school designed to promote, instill, and foster Indian culture in children ages 5 to 18. Bal Vihar encourages the youth group (ages 13 and above) to participate in activities that promote respect and understanding of different cultures and religion. Bal Vihar has been in existence since 1992 and its current enrollment is over 400 students.

The report also highlights employers who were previously announced as the winners in Asia Society’s 2019 Best Companies for Asian Pacific Americans for their noteworthy efforts in developing and promoting APA talent. Discover, named Overall Best Employer by Asia Society this year, for instance runs a company-wide Chinese dragon boat race to help educate their employees on its cultural significance. Goldman Sachs, also an awardwinner this year, manages a “Presentation Skills Boot Camp” for their firm-wide Asian Professionals Network to help APA employees

Baljinder Kaur

BY A STAFF WRITER FREMONT, CA- A 7-11 customer and clerk were hospitalized May 2 after four suspects attacked the clerk at a Fremont, Washington location. Indian American customer Baljinder Kaur, 55, jumped in to help when she saw two of the suspects attacking the male clerk, who has not been named by police or in local media reports. Two other suspects, who had been sitting outside in a get-away car then turned on her. The four male suspects began pummeling Kaur and the clerk. The clerk suffered a cut to the head. Kaur also suffered injuries to her face. Two days after leaving the hospital, she was still in great pain, according to her son Deep Singh, he planned to take his mother back to the hospital. The entire incident, which occurred at the store’s entrance, was captured on surveillance video. Singh told the news station it is unlike his mother to step into the midst of a battle. “She saw the two people hitting one person. They were hitting him on the head and he trying to close the door,” he said. “And they start punching her on the face and everything,” he said. “Yeah, and my mother and the clerk. She was brave. Like she’s trying to stop them, with the four people.” He says his 55-year-old mother continued to fight even after the clerk was knocked unconscious. Later Detectives have arrested four men for the robbery.
