Talking to reporters in Amethi, Priyanka accused the candidate from Sultanpur Lok Sabha constituency of “betraying the family”. Her remarks came hours after Varun Gandhi gave a warning that his silence should not be construed as weakness. Varun, son of late Sanjay Gandhi, pointed out at a rally that he had never crossed the “Lakshman Rekha” of decency. n a move that will empower Indian researchers and help them connect with rest of the world, the University of Chicago (UC) and two other American universities will help Indian universities ramp up their computing ability to fulfill the scientists’ dream of sharing data with the international fraternity. The connectivity will be via high-speed ‘cloud’ computing clusters and superfast internet. Rob Gardner, a UC researcher, has been working with scientists at Tata Institute of Fundamental

The UC has opened a center in Delhi and the

T
ransgenders should be treated as a third category and as a socially and economically backward class entitled to job reservation, the Supreme Court ruled this week. Activists termed the verdict “revolutionary” but said social acceptance will take longer because of the stigma associated with them. Recognizing transgenders as a third gender, the apex court bench of Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice A.K. Sikri directed the central and state governments to include them for reservation in jobs and education. The court also said both the union and state governments would frame welfare schemes for them. In Kerala, human right activists termed the court verdict as “historic and revolutionary”. “We have seen and heard about the ill-treatment meted out to transgenders because of the convention of human beings classified as male or female. They were treated as social outcasts. They will now get a new lease of life,” said former CPI-M lawmaker Sebastian Paul, who is also a lawyer. I have a cure and I have vowed to clean Indian politics... all I need is people’s support,” said
Modi in the second round of 3D rallies, addressing around 100 locations in 15 states. Modi said that he would set up special courts under the observation of Supreme Court and all the councilors, MLAs, MPs will go through a screening process and those with criminal backgrounds will be prosecuted in a time-bound manner. Rape heinous crime but against blanket death penalty, Mulayam IANS, NEW DELHI

mid a controversy over his remarks opposing death penalty for rape, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has told the National Commission for Women (NCW) that he holds rape to be a heinous crime deserving stern punishment
but believed that capital punishment should be used only in the rarest of rare cases. Replying to a notice sent by the NCW, Mulayam Singh said he has the highest regard for women and has actively taken a number of initiatives for their upliftment. The NCW had sent him the notice based on media reports on
his remarks. The Samajwadi Party chief said last Thursday that death penalty
in rape cases was “unfair” as boys make “mistakes”. The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister had also said that if his party leads the government at the centre, he would change the law. The NCW said that in his reply to the notice, Mulayam Singh said: “The offense of rape is a serious and heinous crime and the perpetrators of such crimes deserve to be dealt with sternly and swiftly.”

With Lok Sabha elections in full swing, and the Delhi assembly polls not too far away, Gadkari’s tweet that Bedi would be the party’s chief ministerial candidate could cause major trouble for the already factionridden state unit in Delhi. While Gadkari could not be contacted, some in BJP said his Twitter account had been hacked and there was some mischief behind the post. The Delhi BJP unit has not been able to overcome its factional fights between groups owing allegiance to Harsh Vardhan and Vijay Goel. This even led to the party naming its Delhi Lok Sabha contestants at the last moment.

Will anything change in India with new prime minister?
After the election results are out, a new government will take charge in New Delhi. But will the age-old system undergo any change? Will the masses get some solace?
We need to clearly understand and appreciate that changing someone in the Prime Minister’s office will not change the government.
AMIT KAPOOR, NEW DELHI
T
he mood for change in the country is strong, and it is imminent that we would have a new prime minister and quite likely with a significant majority. We are all under the veil of the audacity of hope thinking in assuming that the office of the new prime minister will sway a magic wand and things will immediately start improving. We need to clearly understand and appreciate that changing someone in the Prime Minister’s office will not change the government. We will have a new set of ministers in the system, and that is the limit to change. We shall see as the government will still, as always, be run by the bureaucracy who would have the same set of ideas, stuck in
the past with exceedingly shallow perspectives. Why do I make such audacious statements? This is for a simple reason that within the Parliamentary system very little changes. We all know that there is no change in bureaucracy when the government changes. To assert the point: we can clearly state that millions within the government still remain exactly the same. The problem within the system is that the government employees are permanent (breeding incestuous ideas) and have the most power (incidentally brutal power
If we wish to change the government than we need to change the bureaucracy. We need to imbibe from the US system wherein the spoils go to the victorious. with no accountability). It is a well-known, though ignored, that it is really the bureaucrats who run the government. The problem gets accentuated
since the bureaucrat knows that he is governed by higher ups in the bureaucracy with the ministers having minimal influence over their careers. Without a doubt, civil servants will typically cover each other’s backs with nobody accepting ultimate responsibility and accountability while delivering duties. The understanding we need to build in this country is that if we wish to change the government than we need to change the bureaucracy. We need to imbibe from the U.S. system wherein the spoils go to the victorious.
The president in the U.S. gets to appoint everybody at the top and positions of significance i.e., secretaries of various departments. The most significant reality of this idea is that the bureaucrat in this case has not been part of the governmental system and is beholden by the idea of performing and keeping to the mandate as asserted by the president. What matters here is that newer ideas come in with incestuous tendencies being taken care of and most of all having the ability to fire a non-performing asset called the bureaucrat. If India needs to change, then it needs to change its bureaucracy and effectively its civil services. What we might need is a special commission that tries to understand and work towards dismantling the archaic bureaucracy, which is a remnant of the Raj. Incidentally we could have Arvind Kejriwal as the head of the commission as he understands the bureaucracy, has suffered from its hands and it could be an exceptional political move from the next prime minister. I just hope that Narendra Modi is listening to this and acts decisively. He has run the election campaign akin to a presidential campaign in the U.S., and I do hope that he runs the government in a similar fashion with an iron fist by getting rid of the archaic thoughts that are personified by the bureaucracy.
Manmohan Singh: A good man let down by the party A natural leader, the Prime Minister was not properly guided by the Congress party TARUN BASU, NEW DELHI
I
have an abiding memory of Manmohan Singh. It goes far back to the days when he was not the prime minister, not even the finance minister, when in the early ‘90s he took transformational steps to open up and liberalize a collapsing Indian economy and got his name etched in the history of global economics. It was at a child’s birthday party in a residential enclave dominated by government officers where my wife and I found ourselves standing next to a genial-looking Sikh in casual shirt and trousers, and his wife. He was, I told her, the man just named as the chief economic adviser to the new prime
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
minister, Chandra Shekhar, who had replaced V.P. Singh at the head of a minority government
propped up by the Congress in November 1990. True to his character, Manmohan did not socialize much, smiled little, did some perfunctory neighborhood small talk and left. The quiet academic, who had excelled both at Oxford and Cambridge universities, was once described by his alma mater, that honored him after he became the prime minister, as someone who left the “scholar’s life in the shade... to the dust and clamor of the political battle (in India)”, driven by his “sense of duty to his country”. Even as his career graph in the next few years took this economics professor to dizzying levels of responsibility — from finance minister to member of
the Congress Working Committee to Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha to prime minister — it did little to change the taciturn man who spoke only when spoken to and who made little effort to strike up a conversation. But all those who have worked with him acknowledge him as a man of scholarship, dedication, intellect — the late national security adviser J.N. Dixit had rated his intellectual caliber “perhaps higher than Jawaharlal Nehru” — and tremendous hard work, who spent long hours into the night poring over government papers and pondering over policy moves. On the last day of the 15th Lok Sabha, which also happened to be the last day in the House for
Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister, BJP leader Arun Jaitley paid him tribute as a “man of scholarship” who was not a “natural leader” and who lacked the capacity to be the “driving force” for the government in parliament. If Manmohan Singh were better advised, especially in his second term (his former media adviser, Sanjaya Baru, quit just before the 2009 election), Manmohan may still have been the star brand on whose work the Congress rode to victory in 2009. The failure of the government, party and the prime minister himself to communicate its achievements and explain properly the perceived failures was its single-biggest undoing.

‘NDA HEADING FOR FULL MAJORITY’

he BJP and its allies are projected to bag 275 Lok Sabha seats, three more than needed to form the government, while the Congress and its partners are set to win just 111 seats, according to a new poll survey released this week. Dressed in a veshti and shirt,BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi waves to supporters at an election rally in Chennai.
The BJP alone is set to win 226 seats, the party’s strongest performance ever and a dramatic improvement from the two it won in 1984. The Congress, which has ruled the country for the past 10 years, has never dipped below 100 seats, but the poll by NDTVHansa Research projects that it will win only 92 seats. Even with its allies, the Congress is projected to bag 111 seats, three short of its worst solo performance of 114 seats in 1999. The survey showed the BJP had benefited from canny last-minute

alliances such as the one with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh. Another poll by NDTV-Hansa Research in March had projected 214 seats for the BJP and 259 for the NDA. The NDA crossing the magic figure of 272 is heavily predicated on the BJP bagging the 51 seats in
Uttar Pradesh that the latest poll shows it winning. Till now, the BJP had been projected as heading towards being the single largest party but with its alliance falling short of the majority mark. If the alliance does not reach 272 seats, it will have to seek more partners from among regional players like J. Jayalalithaa, who is
expected several seats in Tamil Nadu, or Mamata Banerjee, who is projected to get a majority of the 42 seats in West Bengal. Four phases of the Lok Sabha polls have been completed so far and there is a month and five phases of balloting still to go before votes are counted on May 16.
BJP will ruin ‘Bharatiyata’, ‘Hindustaniyat’: Sonia IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he BJP will ruin the essence of “Bharatiyata” and “Hindustaniyat”, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said on April 14, urging people to “chose the right path”. In a video message posted on the Congress website, Gandhi said India was at a “crossroads” in this election. “What are these values that are the very heart and soul of our motherland? They are love and respect, harmony and brotherhood. In a word, non-violence,” Gandhi said in the message in Hindi, which had a translated English text posted along. “Living with these feelings for each other across religions, castes, communities, regions, languages is
what makes us one strong nation. These have been the bedrock of our progress. These are the essence of our Bharatiyata, our Hindustaniyat,” she said. “Without naming him, Gandhi took a dig at Bharatiya Janata Party’s
prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. “It is this, the very heart and soul of India, that we are fighting to protect in this election, from those who seek to change it, and to divide us. We want unity.”

’s true. People of this Pakistan want Narendra Modi to become prime minister of India. More than 250 residents, including over 100 voters of a village called “Pakistan” in Bihar’s Purnea district, are set to vote for the BJP to help Modi to fulfil his dream. “We want Narendra Modi to become PM,” said Hira Hembrum, a middle aged villager. Hembrum’s view was supported by most of the villagers who are living in abject poverty and without basic amenities. Pakistan is the name of a village in Singhiya panchayat,
Srinagar block, about 30 km from Purnea town, the district headquarters. “People in Pakistan are keen to vote for BJP to see Modi as PM,”
Over 100 voters of a village called Pakistan in Bihar’s Purnea district, are set to vote for BJP Haldu Murmu, another villager of Pakistan in Purnea, about 350 km from the state capital,” was quoted as saying in local media.
What is interesting is that there is not one Muslim family in the village, which comprises mostly Santhal tribal households. There also is not one mosque in this Pakistan. Murmu said they want to vote Modi to counter neighboring country Pakistan’s bid to disrupt peace. “Only Modi can do it,” he said. Purnea goes to polls April 24. According to a police official, government documents record the name of the village as Pakistan. So how did the village get its name? Elders in the village recall that the village was named soon after India’s partition in 1947.

Manmohan in book tangle
Former media adviser’s book calls him a ‘puppet’ PM; weakest prime minister ever, says BJP IANS, NEW DELHI
I
n a book that has sent ripples across the political establishment for its timing, Sanjaya Baru, media adviser to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in his first term, has said that Congress President Sonia Gandhi slowly chipped away at the authority of the Prime Minister’s Office, created a parallel power structure and left a weakened prime minister who “allowed himself to become an object of such ridicule in his second term in office”. After this revelation, the BJP called Manmohan Singh the “weakest prime minister ever”, and asked him to introspect how his tenure “impacted on the institution”. Commenting on the book The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh by the prime minister’s former advisor Sanjay Baru, veteran
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani said the book endorsed what everyone knew — that Manmohan Singh was the weakest prime minister. “The book has officially endorsed what everyone knew... When I said I feel he (Manmohan Singh) is the weakest prime minister ever, my colleagues said he is a nice man, why do you criticize him so much,” Advani said. Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said Manmohan Singh must seriously introspect as to how his tenure has impacted the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) as an institution. “Manmohan Singh must seriously introspect as to how his tenure impacted on the institution of prime minister. Did he have the last word on all subjects? Or is it the system of the original Communist states that was operating, where the party general secretary was always more important than the head of
the government,” Jaitley wrote in his blog. “Prime ministers are known not by the number of years they have spent in office, but by the footprints they leave behind,” the BJP leader said. BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said the situation in the Congress was stuck between an “accidental prime minister” and party vice president Rahul Gandhi, who “did not even want to be a prime ministerial candidate”. Narendra Modi, BJP prime ministerial candidate, said that PM Manmohan Singh’s daughter’s reaction to a book which questioned her father’s authority as the head of the government proves that the contents of the book are true. “If the PM’s daughter is saying that it was betrayal, then it means that the prime minister’s family believes that the contents of the book are true,” Modi said in his rally in Bhagalpur.
Varun has betrayed Gandhi family: Priyanka Arvind Kejriwal begins IANS, AMETHI (UTTAR PRADESH)

P
riyanka Gandhi Vadra on April 15 slammed estranged cousin Varun Gandhi for the second time in three days, criticizing him for siding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and “betraying the family”. Priyanka, however, said the two were not engaged in a “family tea party” but were in the middle of an “ideological war”. A visibly upset Priyanka, daughter of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and late former prime minister Rajiv
Priyanka Gandhi
Gandhi, said she would not have even forgiven her children for being with a group that is out to destroy the country’s social and secular fabric. “My father laid down his life for the unity of this country. How can I take all this silently?” she said when asked about her remarks against her cousin.
SULTANPUR (UTTAR PRADESH): BJP leader Varun Gandhi on April 15 defended his decision to be with the BJP and refused to criticize his cousin Priyanka Gandhi despite her criticism of him. In a speech after filing his nomination papers from Sultanpur, Varun Gandhi took on Priyanka Gandhi — not by name though — for saying that he (Varun) “has gone astray from the right path”. “I have chosen a path which is the path of the country, and I am sure this is the correct path,” he said.

AP chief Arvind Kejriwal on April 15 plunged into campaigning for the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency, where he will face BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. Arriving here after a overnight train ride from Delhi, Kejriwal met a Muslim leader and also a group of traders and listened to their problems. Party sources told IANS that former Delhi chief minister was staying at a priest’s house in Tulsi Ghat. Kejriwal also held small roadside public meeting in various places in the Hindu holy city. “He listened to the problems of people and explained to them what AAP has for them,” a senior party leader told IANS. “There will be more public meetings from Wednesday,” he added.

It’s not going to be easy for Narendra Modi in Varanasi NACHIKETA DESAI, VARANASI
T
he climb from the ghats of Varanasi to New Delhi’s 7 Race Course Road is proving to be steep and replete with roadblocks for Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial aspirant Narendra Modi, veteran Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) organizers admit. “The BJP and RSS have given us the target of securing a victory
margin of 300,000 votes for Modi. He would be lucky if he manages to win by 30,000 to 40,000 votes. There are three parallel setups, often working at cross-purposes, entrusted with the task of managing Modi’s election campaign. Is this how a war is fought and won,” a veteran RSS organizer, who has managed successive Lok Sabha, state assembly and Varanasi Municipal Corporation elections since 1977, asked while speaking
to IANS. One set of workers comprise the local RSS cadre, who religiously attend the shakhas held every morning in their respective localities. Another set is that of mid-level RSS organizers sent to Varanasi from different parts of the country. The third set comprises of city and district party workers. “Gone are the days when RSS volunteers and BJP workers used to put in their own time and money to campaign for the party
candidates. All political parties now engage paid workers, and the BJP is no exception,” said an RSS organizer. “For many political workers, election time is when they get the chance to make money,” said Sunil Tripathi, a former activist of the JP movement of the 1970s. Apprehensions and the disorderly campaign machinery apart, Modi is widely expected to win, though a low win margin may dent his image.

Bharara takes on NY Governor Governor’s decision to close an anti-corruption commission as part of a deal with legislators has been questioned ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
N
ew York’s IndianAmerican prosecutor Preet Bharara, who is known in India for his dogged prosecution of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, has now taken on the state’s Governor Andrew M. Cuomo over his decision to shutter an anti-corruption commission as part of a deal with legislators for an ethics package. Cuomo created the panel “with great fanfare,” shuttered it “unceremoniously”, said Bharara in a radio interview as cited by Newsday, and “thinking people wonder why that happened and want to get to the bottom of it”. “I think in the letter I sent to the commission I said there was an appearance that cases were bargained away in exchange for a political deal,” said the attorney who hit the headlines in India over the way he pursued the prosecution of Indian diplomat Devyani

Bharara, an appointee of President Barack Obama, indicated he was troubled by reports of interference in the commission’s actions. “I don’t know what the facts are,” Bharara was quoted as saying on WNYC’s “The Brian Lehrer Show” on April 12. Cuomo and legislators in closeddoor negotiations agreed to enact some election law changes and toughen bribery statutes. In exchange, the governor terminated the commission that was originally slated to work through the end of this year. Newsday says Bharara’s investigations of state legislators helped spark, in part, the creation of the commission last year. In letters to the commission, Bharara asked it to “preserve all documents that may be under your control” — including emails. “We’re going to look at the documents,” Bharara was quoted as saying in an interview.
medical tribunal in Britain has cleared an Indian-origin doctor of allegedly performing female genital mutilation on a woman during a routine plastic surgery. Sureshkumar Pandya, a general practitioner, who did a routine labiaplasty surgery on a 33year-old woman in East London’s Regency Clinic in March 2012, has been accused of botching up the procedure and mutilating the genitals of the woman, identified only as A, in the process. The panel found the anatomical result of the procedure could be said “to be equivalent to Female Genital Mutilation’(FGM),” but cleared Pandya of the charge as he did not intend to perform the operation on the woman, Daily Mail reported on April 11. The woman said that the surgery left her feeling “violated and butchered” with virtually the same effects as genital mutilation, the
Manchester tribunal heard. Chair Anthony Morgan said there has been insufficient evidence to prove that Pandya set out to remove all or virtually all of Patient A’s labia minora or vaginal lips. “In your evidence you stated that you were totally against the practice of FGM and would not have any reason to carry it out. In the light of your character and the testimony you gave, the panel accepts this,” the chair was quoted as saying. The Indian-origin doctor, in his defense, contended that there was nothing unusual about the operation and the procedure.

Gulzar to receive
Dadasaheb Phalke Award Award a recognition for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema IANS, NEW DELHI
V
eteran poet and film lyricist Gulzar has been chosen for the coveted Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2013, the ministry of information and broadcasting announced here on April 11. The multi-faceted Gulzar, whose real name is Sampooran Singh Kalra, is a lyricist, director, screen writer, producer and poet. He is the 45th winner of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Gulzar’s daughter Meghna took to Twitter, immediately after the news was announced, to share her joy. “Dadasaheb Phalke award for my father. So proud,” she posted. The award is conferred by the government for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema. Bimal Julka, secretary, ministry of information and broadcasting, congratulated Gulzar on the momentous occasion. Born in 1934 in Punjab in pre-independence India, Gulzar started his career in 1956. As a lyricist, he got his first break in Bimal Roy’s Bandini. He then worked with leading composers like Sachin Dev Burman, Salil Chowdhury, Shankar-Jaikishan, Hemant Kumar, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Madan Mohan, Rajesh Roshan, Anu Malik and the new age ShankarEhsaan-Loy. The 79-year-old was conferred the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002 and the Padma Bhushan in 2004 . He has won a number of National Film Awards and 20 Filmfare Awards. At the 81st Oscars in 2009, he won the Academy Award for best original song for “Jai ho” with Rahman. His poetry has been published in three compilations: Chand Pukhraaj Ka, Raat Pashminey Ki and Pandrah Paanch Pachattar.

Now, soccer mania for Ranbir MUMBAI: Bollywood heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor, who will be owning the Mumbai franchise in the inaugural Indian Super League (ISL), said he was looking to translating his passion for the sport into development activity in the cricket-dominated country. Ranbir has tied up with investment banker Bimal Parekh to co-own the Mumbai franchise of the eightcity league that will be played during SeptemberNovember. “It is a moment of great pride for me to be a part of the Indian Super
‘Bhootnath Returns’: Ennobling voyage into Indian elections Film: “Bhootnath Returns”; Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Parth Bhalerao, Boman Irani, Usha Jadhav, Sanjai Mishra; Directed by Nitesh Tiwari; Rating:*** 1/2 (3 and a half stars)
S
traightaway, this film wins you over with its clean heart and straight-talking attitude to the rot that has set into our governmental system. You want a change in the nation’s politics? Then change the politicians! It’s really as simple as that. Director Nitesh Tiwari who codirected the endearing kiddies’ concoction Chillar Party finally unravels one of the greatest mysteries of poetic life.
What did Wordsworth mean when he said, ‘Child is the father of man’? Watch little Parth Bhalerao spar effortlessly with the formidable Mr Bachchan. And you see in front of your dazzled eyes the future of Indian cinema. Parth simply sails through his slum-kid’s role, creating for his character little pockets of perkiness and poignancy without ever playing aggressively for effect. He speaks his lines with the casual grace of a theatre veteran.
Meengal’, Telugu drama ‘Na Bangaru Thalli’, Kannada film ‘Prakruthi’ and Malayalam drama ‘24 North Kaatham’ were among the southern movies that pocketed 17 awards. Girish Malik’s directorial debut ‘Jal’ was named the best film in the special effects category at the 61st National Film Awards. The director said it is “a great moment”.
Epitome of gracious screen-sharing that he is, Mr Bachchan simply slows down to let his little co-star to take centrestage, bowing to the little actor’s consummate naturalness even when faced with very adult problems like corruption in politics, the redundancy of democracy
and yes, the validity and imperativeness of the vote. Firing a topical salvo this ballot drama is speckled with some disarming display of feisty homilies. The film builds on the premise of a benign ghost’s friendship with the slum-kid without allowing the nar-
League and to represent the vibrant city of Mumbai. Football has never been far away from my daily life since childhood, and now as a partner in the ISL, I am looking forward to translate my passion into contributing to the growth of the sport,” said Ranbir. “I firmly believe in the grassroots and community development program designed by the league organizers IMG Reliance, to popularise the game and that’s one thing which excited me to be part of this dream.”
rative to become a flashy showcase for either of the two actors’ performing abilities. Boman Irani as the slimy politician enriches the political drama further by providing a tangy tangible flavor of decay and corruption in this amiably contoured morality tale. Director Tiwari’s heart bleeds for the country’s electoral crisis. No matter who wins the elections, the public loses. Bhootnath Returns dissolves those walls of cynicism that we’ve built to protect our conscience from politics. It gives us a vivid if somewhat didactic view of a democracy that mocks the very multitude that believes in it. During this season of heavy electioneering a light heartfelt take on the vote bank is just what the doctor prescribed. And yes, Amitabh Bachchan and Parth Bhalerao are the coolest pair of dudes since Jai and Veeru. — By Subhash K. Jha

My mother inspires my style: Deepika
Katrina awestruck by Lucknawi bridal look
MUMBAI: Model-turned-actress Deepika Padukone, who can give her contemporaries a run for their money when it comes to style, says her style statement is “simple” and “elegant” like her mother Ujjala. “In my growing up years, my mother was my style icon and she still is. She is someone who has influenced my style a lot,” Deepika said on April 10 at the launch of a limited collection of Van Heusen spring/summer collection designed by her. The actress gives due credit to her mother for her fashion sensibilities. “Today when I talk about my personal style being classic, simple, elegant...it all comes from the way she used to dress. I have never been someone who has accessorized a lot and that comes from her,” said Deepika.
NEW DELHI: Actress Katrina Kaif, who flaunts four Indian bridal looks for an ad, says she liked the Lucknawi avatar the most for its elegance and minimal yet glamorous look. In the new mango drink Slice Swayaamvar commercials, Katrina is seen in four bridal avatars, which were designed by well-known designer Anaita Shroff Adajania. The commercials highlight Slice’s three new variants chosen from across the country. “It was a spectacular experience to dress as a multiple bride for this beautiful concept called Slice Swayaamvar. I love the fact that India has such a rich culture to borrow from when it comes to bridal splendor, and each region has its own trademark style,” Katrina, who mostly dresses up in western attire for films, said in a statement. “I was floored with all the looks, because each look is so traditional, yet has refreshing elements of modernity. My personal favorite was the Lucknowi avatar as it is very elegant, minimal yet glamorous and akin to my style statement,” she added. For her generic bride look, Katrina donned a red lehenga, a long choli, and a red bindi. As a Lucknawi bride, Katrina looks stunning in vintage shades of green and baby pink, created by a silent embroiderer in the Lucknawi gharana style, with a modern adah of crystals. The Dhoom:3 star drapes traditional Kanjivaram sari for the Southern look that was reinterpreted as a structured contemporary gown, with a 10foot trail, along with heavy golden South Indian temple jewelry.
Alia becomes fond of Revathi MUMBAI: Two-film old Alia Bhatt, who worked with actressdirector Revathi in their forthcoming film 2 States, says they share a strong bond akin to that of a mother and daughter. “Towards the end of the film, I developed mother-daughter relationship with her (Revathi). The way she touched my face, I kind of felt that warmth with her. What also I realized is that while working with her I became a good actor. “What she brings to the table is not just the dialogues. She would bring much more... I felt like she was my mother. I could bring the emotions only because of her. She is a fantastic actor,” Alia told IANS. Revathi plays Alia’s mother in 2 States, adapted from Chetan Bagat’s novel by the same name. The Highway star is also fond of actress Kareena Kapoor and says that she feels great when she is compared to the Jab We Met star. “I can be flattered. I have done two films and people are comparing me with her.”
Sonakshi’s punctuality impresses producers
‘I am still a Delhi boy at heart’
I wouldn’t call myself a star: Varun Dhawan MUMBAI: Young actor Varun Dhawan, whose fan following seems to have increased following his latest release Main Tera Hero, wants to avoid calling himself a “star”. He says that establishing a connect with the audience will always be of importance for him. “I wouldn’t call myself a star. Not now, not ever,” said Varun, who made his debut with Student Of The Year. “I’m here because I love the movies. I am not here to make money. By god’s grace I don’t have to worry about my next 4,000 meals. At the same time, I am not here to do charity either. But my relationship with the audience will always be more important than all other considerations. I’ve to make sure of that,” he said.

MUMBAI: Sidharth Malhotra, who shifted base from the capital to the country’s entertainment capital Mumbai, says while Mumbai has made him what he is today, he’s still a Delhi boy at heart. “I was lucky to come in (to Mumbai) at a time when they (people) were looking for new talent. I have done my share of auditions. I have evolved and changed over the period and Mumbai has a lot to do with that,” the 29-year-old said here at the unveiling of the cover of Men’s Health magazine featuring him.
Sunny has no regret for her past MUMBAI: Actress Sunny Leone, who is riding high on the success of her latest Bollywood project Ragini MMS 2, says she doesn’t look back with regret at her past as an adult film star. “As far as my career goes I don’t regret anything that I have done. I believe that everything that I have done has led me to today,” Sunny told reporters at the unveiling of the cover page of Mandate magazine, featuring her. “This is the most amazing time of my life and this would not have been happening if my past did not exist,” said the former porn star.
MUMBAI: Holiday is the fourth film in which Sonakshi Sinha has been cast with Akshay Kumar. She says there’s no doubt that they share a good working rapport, but the fact that they are both punctual also keeps the producers happy. The duo has earlier featured in films like Rowdy Rathore, Joker and Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara. “Holiday is my fourth film with Akshay. I think once when a pair is accepted, people like enjoy watching them together on-screen and I guess that’s why people even cast them,” Sonakshi told IANS. The actress, who has also worked with Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, Ranveer Singh, Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor, added: “I’ve had a very good working rapport will all of my co-stars. Nobody has complained about me and they never said they don’t want to work with me. So that comfort level is there even with Akshay sir.”

n a tragic case in northwest Georgia, a store-keeper was stabbed to death in what appears to have been a robbery, though not much money was stolen. Based on video surveillance camera footage, the police arrested a young woman suspected in the March 9 murder of an Indian-American store clerk in Dalton, GA, 80 miles northwest of Atlanta. Members of the United States
Marshall’s Service arrested Skyy Raven Marie Mims, 21, a hip hop artist and model originally from Detroit, March 12, in Bartow County. Currently housed in the Whitfield County Jail, Mims is suspected of having knifed to death Dahyabhai Kalidas Chaudhari, 37, a store clerk in Kanku’s Express, a convenience store on Airport Road in Dalton. According to Gavin Duffy, spokesman for the US Marshall’s Service, Mims had been handed over to the police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI)
Dahyabhai Kalidas Chaudhari, 37
is handling the case, along with the Whitfield County Sheriff ’s Office. She is charged with one count of murder which occurred on March 9 shortly before midnight. At 11.59 pm, Whitfield County 911 received a call from customer who entered the store and found Chaudhari lying on the floor. When deputies arrived at the scene they found the store clerk dead from his wound. Investigators reviewed the store video and identified as a suspect. She was arrested within two days of the crime. According
to the Atlanta Journal Constitution (AJC), Mims is alleged to have left the store with cash and lottery tickets, leaving Chaudhari to die after allegedly stabbing him in a back room of the store. Mims was found at a home on Southmont Drive in Bartow County, and tried to run from officers, but was captured. Chaudhari is described as a friendly man with no known relatives. “Right now, I’m lost. My mind is lost,” says store owner Kanu Chaudhari (not a relative).
Officer gets 5-yr jail for Xoom-HDFC Bank tie-up thrashing female inmate for instant money transfer
Carlton Clark

N
EWARK — An Essex County corrections officer who was caught on jailhouse video cameras pummeling a female inmate in 2011 was sentenced to five years in prison last week. Carlton Clark, 40, will have to serve the five years before he is eligible for parole under the terms issued by state Superior Court Judge Robert Gardner. Gardner, noting that Clark had no criminal history, ordered that his fiveyear sentences for official misconduct and aggravated assault be served concurrently. Clark was facing as many as 20 years in state prison. Clark, the father of four children, did not comment at the sentencing. His lawyer, Anthony Iacullo, said he intended to appeal the jury verdict. “This is sad day for everyone involved,” Iacullo said. “It was a job he loved. And this was an incident that played out in a matter of seconds. Unfortunately, the jury did not
accept our view of the facts.” Iacullo argued that Clark was trying to head off a jailhouse riot on August 26, 2011 when he subdued inmate Emirlene Philemon, 20, after returning her to her cell block following a trip to the Essex County Jail’s medical unit. Jailhouse surveillance video played for jurors showed Clark repeatedly punching Philemon as she lay on the ground defenseless. “The video doesn’t lie,” Assistant Essex County Prosecutor Peter Polidoro told jurors. Two fellow officers testified against Clark, admitting they lied on their internal reports of the incident when they claimed Clark used “minimal force” to control Philemon after she threw the first punch. On the witness stand, Officer Yasmina Allen told jurors Clark refused to stop the beating despite her pleas. “He pushed me away,” Allen testified. “I was telling him to stop. I told him at least four times.” At the time, Philemon was being held at the jail on armed robbery charges. She pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of receiving stolen property in June 2012 and was sentenced to 383 days in jail – time she had already served. Her lawsuit against the county is still pending. Philemon told jurors her eye socket was fractured, her tooth was chipped and hair was pulled from her head during the beating. Clark outweighed her by 100 pounds. “It is a tragic case when someone in law enforcement, who was sworn to protect and serve the public, disregards his oath,’’ said Polidoro.

Indian prof faces 20-yr jail term for cheating NSF BY A STAFF WRITER

anoj Kumar Jha (46), of Severn, Md., a professor at Morgan State University in Baltimore, was convicted on April 1 in connection with a scheme to defraud the National Science Foundation (NSF) and his students. He faces a possible sentence of 20 years in prison on each of four counts of wire fraud, and for one count each of mail fraud and falsification of records; and a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for theft of government property, according to the US Attorney’s Office. The sentencing is scheduled for July. The Indian American professor, director of Morgan State’s Center for Advanced Transportation and Infrastructure Engineering Research, was accused of fraudulently obtaining $200,000 in grants from the NSF’s Small Business Technology Transfer program in 2008 and 2009 and applying for an additional $500,000 through the same program. Prosecutors claimed Jha falsified expenditure reports and time sheets and used the funds for personal expenses, including paying his mortgage and credit card bills and paying his wife about $11,000, though she did no work for the NSF.
Prof. Manoj Kumar Jha
He also had oversight for another $100,000 in US Department of Defense grants that were supposed to be distributed to students working on contracts, but Jha falsely told students they needed to return part of the stipends to him. Students returned about $36,000 in grants, which he deposited in his own bank account. In a statement issued after Jha was arrested, Morgan State said it has “cooperated fully with the federal investigation into this matter and largely because of the investigatory efforts of NSF we believe we are now in a better position to enhance our systems to detect this type of behavior in the future.”

ri Sita Ramachandra Swamy Devasthanam, Bhadrachalam, Andhra Pradesh, India, is organizing the first-ever Sri Sita Rama Kalyanam and Sri Rama Pattabhishekam in New Jersey on the auspicious Chaitra Masam, Panchami on April 19 at its sprawling 42 acre campus in Morganville, NJ. According to Dr. S. Yegnasubramanian, chairman of The Hindu American Temple and Cultural Center (HATCC), it is a “rare and exclusive opportunity for all of us to witness and participate in this grand event” organized by Bhadrachalam Temple in the tri-state area. To propagate Bhakti and Sanatana Dharma, Bhadrachala Devasthanam has decided to perform Sri Sita Rama Kalyanam in the US. It is believed that the region where celestial kalyanams are performed would be bestowed with peace and prosperity. For this historic event at Sri Guruvaayoorappan Temple, also known as Krishna Mandir, the Bhadrachalam
Devasthanam is sending Utsava Moorthies, Pooja Samagri, Thalambralu (Akshatas), Rama Mada, several priests and officials to conduct the Kalyanam. The highlight of the program is that immediately following the kalyanam, Sri Rama Pattabhishekam will be performed. The Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy temple at Bhadrachalam is the most famous temple in India dedicated to Lord Rama and is situated on the left bank of the Godavari river. It is a place of pilgrimage for Hindus, considered to be one of the greatest holy shrines in South India with a very rich and unique historical background. The puranic and historic facts relate that Lord Rama long after he had shed his
mortal coils manifested himself to save his devotee Bhadra Maharshi whom he promised ‘moksha’ after intensive prayer. Every year during the month of Chaitra, on the auspicious Navami the Kalyanamahotsavam of Sri Rama with his consort Sita is celebrated in a resplendent manner. The Krishna temple is built on a 42acre property with parking for over 300 cars, located at 31 Wooleytown Road, Morganville, NJ 07751, and is one of the largest temples in the US. The temple built the priest’s quarters consisting of 12 fullyfurnished apartments in 2010. The upper level of the temple houses all the sanctums within an area of 17,500 sq. ft. The lower level has a multi-purpose hall,
facilities, gift-shop, and board room. The magnificent granite steps lead to the temple in the upper level. There are 18 steps in the south side of the front that lead to the Ayyappan sanctum. The presiding deity of the Temple is Lord Sri Guruvaayoorappan. In addition, the temple houses, Ganesha; Subrahmanya with Valli and Devasena; Siva with Ambika; Balaji with Sridevi & Bhudevi;; Ayyappa; Satyanarayana; Kannikaparameshwari; Bhadrachalam Rama, Krishna, Durga/ Lakshmi/Saraswati, Gayatri, Kalabhairava, Hanuman and Navagrahas. All images are of granite and sculptured by traditional artisans of Tamilnadu. Lord Ayyppa sanctum will have the 18-steps similar to those in Sabarimala in Kerala. In addition, the temple houses the utsava murty’s of Lord Kalyana Srinivasa with Sridevi and Bhudevi from the Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanam, and Lord Satyanarayana from the Annavaram Satyanarayana Swami Devasthanam.

STATE APPROVES PLAN TO SCRAP JERSEY CITY PARKING AGENCY
S
BY A STAFF WRITER
“I believe they want to lay everybody off and rehire who they want to,” he said. City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill, who once called the JCPA a “cesspool of political patronage,” called Tarantula’s remarks “ignorant and self-serving.” “The city is forming a non-partisan committee to make sure that this is done in a fair and non-political way, Morrill said. “The Fulop administration is focused on saving Jersey City taxpayers millions of dollars and improving the delivery of services to our residents. We accomplish both here.” Tarantula also noted that the law firm of state Sen. Ray Lesniak, a Democrat from Union County, authored the $35,000 report that recommended abolishing the JCPA. Lesniak’s dual roles are “clearly a conflict” that should have kept the Local Finance Board from weighing in, according to Tarantula. Asked to respond, Lesniak said he is permitted as a state legislator to represent public bodies in his role as an attorney. “So his opinion is flat-out wrong,” Lesniak said. The City Council has to formally approve Fulop’s plan to abolish the JCPA.
tate officials have given Jersey City permission to dissolve its 65-year-old parking authority, an autonomous agency that Mayor Steve Fulop wants to abolish and incorporate into the city Department of Public Safety. The Jersey City Parking Authority (JCPA) is one of the city’s seven autonomous agencies. Fulop, while campaigning for mayor last year, pledged to investigate dissolving these entities, which operate with public dollars, as a way to save costs and increase efficiency. The state Local Finance Board, which had to give the dissolution its OK, has now approved the city’s plan unanimously. The agency, which was created in 1949 and employs about 90, has a roughly $7-million budget. John Tarantula, chair of the JCPA’s board of commissioners, said dissolving the agency would be a “big mistake.” Tarantula said Fulop’s move is “clearly a political reprisal” for the JCPA, whose leadership backed former Mayor Jerramiah Healy over Fulop in last year’s mayoral race.
US plans to allow spouse of H1B visa holder to work in America BY A STAFF WRITER
W
ASHINGTON- DC: Aimed at attracting the world’s best and brightest, the US will soon come out with a series of policy initiatives and changes in the existing rules including allowing the spouses of H-1B visas to work in America. In a statement, the White House said that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will soon publish several proposed rules that will make the US more attractive to talented foreign entrepreneurs and other high-skill immigrants who will contribute substantially to the US economy, create jobs, and enhance American innovative competitiveness. “These proposed regulations include rules authorizing employment for spouses of certain high-skill workers on H-1B visas, as well as enhancing opportunities for outstanding professors and researchers,” it said in a statement. “These measures build on continuing DHS efforts to streamline, eliminate inefficiency, and increase the transparency of the existing immigration system, such as by the launch of Entrepreneur Pathways, an online resource center that gives immigrant entrepreneurs an intuitive way to navigate opportunities to start and grow a business,” it said. From the statement, it appears that spouses of H-1B visas are unlikely to get a blanket approval to work in the US. Only certain category of spouses of H-1B visa holders - mainly from the science and tech category - are likely to get the nod. The White House also said the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) are launching a new collaboration to empower entrepreneurial scientists and address the critical gap between fundamental research and the development of a commercial entity. The H-1B work visas for highly skilled professionals have been most beneficial from IT sector professionals from India. As per the Congressional mandated cap, US Citizenship and Immigration Services can allocate a maximum of 65,000 H-1B visas for the fiscal year 2015 beginning October 1, 2014.
Driver in prof attack case gets 12 yrs

EW JERSEY- The last of five attackers who beat a New Jersey Indian American professor to death outside his home, received a 12-year prison sentence on April 3 for driving the getaway car and attacking the educator’s teenage sons. The awarding of the jail term was the final chapter in the case in which five young men fatally attacked City University of New York’s Prof. Divyendu Sinha outside his Old Bridge, New Jersey, home while he was taking an evening stroll with his family. Steven Contreras received multiple sentences for conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, driving the get-away car, attacking Sinha’s teenage sons who stepped in to help their father, and lying to prosecutors. Contreras received 17 and a half years total. But he will serve some of his sentences concurrently, adding up to 12 years of actual prison time. He will have to serve 85 per cent of his sentence before he can apply for parole. Says Gaurang Vaishnav, executive vice president of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America: “We wanted 30 years for each of them, but we had lowered our expectations,” explaining that if Middlesex County prosecutors had asked

for higher sentences, an appellate court could have found them exceedingly harsh and different outcomes of lower sentences might have arisen. In 2012, Contreras had pleaded guilty to driving the get-away car and received a four-year sentence in exchange for offering testimony against the main attackers, Cash Johnson and Christian Tinli. But on the stand, Contreras allegedly lied about crucial facts on the night of the attack, reportedly to protect his friends. Based on Contreras’ testimony, Johnson and Tinli were acquitted in the murder of Sinha, and instead received a six-month sentence for attacking his sons. Julian Daley, also involved in the brutal beating, pleaded guilty last year and

BY A STAFF WRITER
T
he India First Alliance (IFA) organized a ‘havan’ at the residence of Durana Singha at Lindenhurst, New York
on April 13 to propitiate all gods and goddesses, nine planets, and invoked blessings of Lord Ganesha, the remover of all obstacles, with a view to ensuring a resounding victory of Narendra Modi, the
received a 15-year prison sentence. Contending that Contreras had lied on the stand to protect his friends–violating the terms of his plea bargain–Middlesex County, New Jersey prosecutors re-opened the case against Contreras. Before the sentence was read out in court, Carlos Diaz Cabo, who is now representing Contreras, said his client was about to receive more time than the actual perpetrators of the attack. No evidence suggests that Contreras actually participated in the beating. Cabo said Contreras was a man of “good character” and presented the court with letters of support from family and friends. “Even people of good character get caught up in bad things,” said Cabo, describing Sinha’s death as a “tragedy.” Cabo said Contreras did not understand the terms of his plea agreement. Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Christopher Kuberiet waved away Cabo’s statements, saying: “This was no tragedy. It was an assault, an ambush on the Sinha family and on the Old Bridge community in general.” “There is no mitigating factor here. This was a conspiracy,” stated Kuberiet. “All of them were equally responsible for the death of Dr. Sinha. This is like killing your parents and then running away crying ‘orphan ”. Bhartiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate, in the ongoing general elections in India. The IFA is an organization dedicated to supporting Modi’s candidature. The results of the polls are to be declared on May 16. The Puja was conducted by Shastri Jagdish Tripathi ji, a renowned Hindu Priest in New York, ending with the chants of “Dharma Ki Jai Ho”; “Adharma Ka Nash Ho”! Rajendra P. Singh welcomed the audience and requested each and everyone in the audience to call your friends and family members in India--at least 50 people--and urge them to conduct doorto-door campaigns in the neighborhood and ensure that they either vote for Narendra Modi/BJP, Shiv Sena, Akali Dali or any other member of the NDA.

Russian President Vladimir Putin during a telephonic conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel late on April 15 night warned of the possibility of civil war, the Kremlin press service said on April 16. The two leaders “exchanged opinions about the anticonstitutional course of the incumbent Kiev authorities towards the suppression by force of popular protests in southeastern Ukraine,” the Kremlin statement added. Putin and Merkel accentuated the importance of the four-party negotiations between Russia, the EU, the US and Ukraine scheduled for April 17, expressing the hope that the Geneva meeting could send a “strong message” to encourage events to take a peaceful route, Xin-
Russian President Vladimir Putin has taken a tough stand on Ukraine
Ease tension in Ukraine: Obama US President Barack Obama urged Russian President Vladimir Putin over phone to influence the proRussian activists to stop their protests in eastern Ukraine, media reported on April 15. The telephonic conversation between the two leaders came as the crisis in eastern Ukraine is increasing since the pro-Russian activists continued to occupy buildings in the eastern towns, BBC reported.
hua reported. Putin also highlighted the importance of solving the problems of Ukraine's economic stabilization and the provision of deliveries and transit of Russian natural gas to Europe. A new wave of unrest erupted in eastern Ukraine over the weekend, as pro-Russia activists seized several government buildings in the cities of Donetsk, Lugansk and Kharkov, demanding a referendum on autonomy and closer ties with Russia. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Parliament on April 15 passed a bill declaring the southern Crimea peninsula as “territory temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation”, the Parliament's press service said in a statement.
WASHINGTON: New York Police Department has disbanded a controversial surveillance unit started after the September 11, 2001, attacks to catalogue information on Muslim businesses and mosques across the New York region. Developed with the CIA's help after 9/11, the socalled Demographics Unit-or Zone Assessment Unithas been the target of controversy and civil lawsuits. “Understanding certain local demographics can be a useful factor when assessing information regarding potential threats coming to the attention of the New York City Police Department,” the department said in a statement on April 15. But “it has been determined that much of the same information previously gathered by the Zone Assessment Unit may be obtained through direct outreach by the NYPD to the communities concerned,” it said. Muslim Advocates and the Centre for Constitutional Rights, two advocacy groups that filed a lawsuit chal-
lenging the unit and its activities in 2012, said they were pleased it had been disbanded but want to ensure the surveillance stops. Welcoming the dismantling of the unit “as a long overdue step towards reining in the unconstitutional excesses of the NYPD” they said in a joint statement, “what has to stop is the practice of suspicion-less surveillance of Muslim communities, not just the unit assigned to do it.” “We will continue to work to ensure the NYPD is fully and finally respecting the rights of the Muslim community.” The suit, Hassan v. City of New York, was dismissed in Feb and is currently under appeal. The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, also welcomed the disbanding of the surveillance unit. “This is an important first step. However, the damage of unconstitutional mass spying on people solely on the basis of their religion has already been carried out and must be addressed,” said Board President Ryan Mahoney. — IANS

Hyderabad: MIM’s pocket borough The MIM, which draws its support mainly from Muslims, appears set to win the poll MOHAMMED SHAFEEQ, HYDERABAD
T
his is one parliamentary constituency which is immune to any wave sweeping the country or Andhra Pradesh and it is the only Lok Sabha seat where the mainstream political parties don’t take the fight seriously. Such is the hold of the Majlis-eIttehadul Muslimeen (MIM) or the Owaisi family over Hyderabad that the results on most occasions during the last three years had been a forgone conclusion. From senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader M. Venkaiah Naidu to even Muslim leaders opposed to the Owaisi family, all have tried but failed to wrest the seat. In a constituency known for sharp polarization of votes on communal lines, the MIM, which draws its support mainly from Muslims, appears set to win the poll for the ninth time in a row.

MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi, who is aiming a hat-trick, is expected to have a smooth sailing again. The London-educated barrister will take on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Bhagwanth Rao in a direct contest. The BJP, which has an alliance with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), has fielded Rao, a
PhD scholar and general secretary of the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi, which organizes the annual Ganesh procession in the city. In 2009, Owaisi defeated Zahid Ali Khan of the TDP by over 100,000 votes. Khan, editor of the Urdu daily ‘Siasat’, has not decided to contest this time.
The constituency spread over the Muslim-majority Old City of Hyderabad had witnessed the worst communal riots in the 1980s and early 1990s. Though the communal tension has ebbed in the last two decades and there is more focus on development issues, the MIM continues to hold sway. The MIM further strengthened its position with the delimitation of the constituency. Till 2004, three of the seven assembly segments of Hyderabad were in neighborer Ranga Reddy district. The three rural segments had a majority of non-Muslim voters. Now all the seven assembly segments are in the city and Muslims are an overwhelming majority in six of them. In 2009, the first polls to be held after delimitation, the MIM bagged six out of the seven assembly segments. The Hyderabad constituency has 1,393,242 voters, about 65 percent of them Muslims. Despite complaints of poor civic amenities, Muslims always backed the MIM.

Jagan to contest for assembly HYDERABAD: YSR Congress party’s president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy will contest the assembly election from Pulivendula while his mother and honorary president Y.S. Vijayamma will fight for the Lok Sabha from Visakhapatnam. Jaganmohan Reddy’s uncle and cousin also figured in the list of candidates announced by the party Monday for parliamentary elections in Seemandhra or residuary state of Andhra Pradesh. Vijayamma, Y.S. Avinash Reddy and Y.V. Subba Reddy were among 24 candidates announced by the party for May 7 elections. The party also declared names of 170 candidates for assembly elections. Jaganmohan Reddy, who eyes the post of chief minister in the residuary state of Andhra Pradesh, will contest assembly election from Pulivendula in his home district Kadapa.
LDF calm, UDF hit by infighting in post-poll Kerala THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Left Front appears calm, while dissent is brewing in the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala, just two days after the state voted to elect 20 Lok Sabha members. Infighting and differences of opinion over ticket allotment are now coming to the fore within the Congress-led UDF, with the first salvo being fired by Kerala Congress (Mani) chief whip P.C. George. “Congress candidates like Anto Antony at Pathanamthitta and M.I. Shahnawaz at Wayanad (both sitting members in the outgoing Lok Sabha) were wrong choices. The outcome in Thiruvananthapuram (Shashi Tharoor) and in Palakkad where M.P. Veerendra Kumar contested is just impossible to predict,” George, known for his razor sharp wit, told IANS. Kerala Congress (Mani) is the UDF’s third biggest ally.

Anto Antony responded strongly to George’s comments, accusing the latter of working with the opposition Left. “I have no doubt and I will easily romp home. It’s only my detractors who fear that my seat will be lost,” Anto Antony said. “He (George) did his best to work along with our opposition and work
against me,” Antony shot back. Faced with an onslaught from the Catholic Church on account of the Kasturirangan report on the Western Ghats, the Congress under duress was forced to ask sitting Lok Sabha member P.T. Thomas to make way for state Youth Congress president Dean Kuriakose in the constituency.
Many fresh faces in Congress list for Seemandhra IANS, HYDERABAD

acing a tough challenge in Seemandhra, the Congress has been forced to field fresh faces for a majority of the seats for assembly and Lok Sabha elections. The party has named almost all loyal outgoing MPs and state legislators due to the mass exodus from the party following the bifurcation of the state. The Congress late on April 13 released the first list of candidates for elections to the Lok Sabha and the state assembly. It announced

candidates for 20 Lok Sabha and 139 assembly seats. The party has named seven new faces for the seats won by it in 2009. After K. Sambasiva Rao, who resigned as
the union minister this month and decided not to contest on Congress ticket, the party has fielded E. Nageswara Rao from Eluru. Out of six MPs expelled from the party in February for stalling the Telangana bill in Parliament, the leadership has won back A. Sai Pratap. The party has re-nominated union ministers Kishore Chandra Deo (Araku), Killi Krupa Rani (Srikakulam), Pallam Raju (Kakinada), Panabaka Lakshmi (Bapatla) and Kotla Suryaprakash Reddy (Kurnool).
AAP’s low-cost, high-impact campaign in Karnataka FAKIR BALAJI, BANGALORE
T
he AAP, which shot to national fame after an impressive showing in the Delhi assembly elections, is racing against time to woo voters with a “low-cost but high-impact campaign” for the Lok Sabha election in Karnataka where polling is due on April 17. Getting candidates to contest in the state’s 28 constituencies was not as much a problem for the party as it has been to sustain the campaign, with a volunteer-based outfit short of funds unlike rival parties. “Our campaign is run by volunteers who took a break from their lucrative jobs for a cause dear to all of us. Our campaign on transparent funding is low cost but is making a high impact on people yearning for a change,” AAP candidate from Bangalore Central V. Balakrishnan told IANS.
The former Infosys honcho, who declared assets worth `1.89 billion in his nomination, is locked in a multi-corner contest against outgoing member P.C. Mohan of the Bharatiya Janata Party, young turk Rizwan Arshad of the Congress and danseuse Nandini Alva from Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S).

Narain Karthikeyan crashes out of Super Formula opener IANS, SUZUKA (JAPAN)

espite qualifying second in the Super Formula season opener at the Suzuka Circuit, Narain Karthikeyan’s race came to a premature end after a collision with eventual winner Loic Duval ended his chances of a top-five finish. The Indian had qualified on the front row on April 12 but had to start fifth after being slapped with a three-place grid penalty as he was adjudged to have impeded another car in free practice. “It has been a disappointing end to the weekend after a promising start. We should have started on the front row but were fifth on the grid and then the incident with Duval scrapped any remaining hopes,” said Karthikeyan. “During the drivers’ briefing, the organisers were clear that a three-place penalty will be awarded in case a driver is found impeding others during qualifying. But in my case it was during the start of the practice session which doesn’t really count towards anything. So the penalty was

quite harsh and unfair and such miscommunication needs to be avoided,” he said. The newly-revamped Super Formula series, formerly known as Formula Nippon, has switched to a new Dallara SF14 chassis this year, powered by a two-litre 550 bhp turbo-charged engine. Driving for Team Impul, Karthikeyan was still harboring hopes of a strong finish, given his pace. Having made a decent getaway off the line, the Indian retained his position during the opening minutes of the 43-lap race and concentrated on maintaining his pace.

a feast for the senses The posh first district in the old city is a shopper’s paradise with boutiques of all major international brands while the winding cobble stoned streets add to the romance of a long-lost empire. itting in one of the many street cafes, sipping hot espresso in between bites of a sacher torte (Viennese chocolate cake) while listening to a violin being played in the background is perhaps the perfect way to spend an evening in surreal Vienna, which takes pride in its laid-back culture. The historically-rich capital of Austria is one of the country’s nine federal states and is home to around 1.8 million people and boasts of palaces, monuments, cathedrals, parks and vineyards. It’s a city where Gothic, NeoGothic and Baroque-styled churches and houses stand tall besides contemporary glass-tinted shops and buildings. Every corner provides a photo opportunity. Vienna also boasts of world-renowned museums and art collections, one of them being the Kunsthistorisches Museum that houses the world’s largest collection of paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, a Flemish Renaissance painter and printmaker known for his landscapes.

The other renowned museums are the Belvedere and the Leopold in the MuseumsQuartier. A stroll around the city is akin to journey back in time to the city’s imperial past. The highlight, of course, is the Ringtrasse, a circular boulevard of over five km that was constructed in place of the old city walls that
were razed for expansion by emperor Franz Joseph in 1857. The ring has grand buildings and manicured gardens on either side. A leisure walk is a must once you’ve treated yourself to one of the cafes or built an appetite. Also known as the ‘City of Music’ Vienna has 50 theatres, including four opera houses, and
once hosted renowned composers such as Wolfgang Amadeue Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven, to name just two. The influence of such legendary musicians is evident from the fact that the city has a vibrant culture of street musicians. It’s common to see them playing instruments in the market squares every evening.
the popular market places. Among the popular markets of the city are Naschmarkt, the city’s largest and which offers a mix of Viennese and international specialties. Many cafes have the traditional exquisite window displays like a prancing horse or a replica of a monument. The hot apple strudel served with either whipped cream or vanilla sauce and the sacher torte are a delight for those with a sweet tooth. The amalgamation of history, music and good food that Vienna offers is, indeed, a feast for the senses.
Six skin habits to unlearn now Fashion in Pakistan LOS ANGELES: Some of the skin care techniques that people think are helping their skin are actually doing more harm than good, says skin care expert Renée Rouleau. The celebrity esthetician lists six bad skin habits one needs to avoid, reports huffingtonpost.com. TUGGING AT THE DELICATE SKIN SURROUNDING THE EYE AREA: The area surrounding eye may show the signs of ageing first. Pulling on the skin while putting in contacts, applying eyeliner can unnecessarily create wear and tear on the collagen and elasticity fibres within the skin. Apply eye cream with the ring finger and use a gentle patting motion to avoid rubbing and tugging. MISTING, NOT WIPING: It is important to use a wiping motion while applying toner. The reason is toners are designed to remove cleanser residue. Always use an alcohol-free toner, wipe it over the skin with a cotton cloth. RUBBING SKIN AGGRESSIVELY WITH A WASHCLOTH: Rubbing the skin too aggressively with a washcloth may encourage irritation, stimulate melanin cells in those prone to brown spots, and create extra wear and tear on skin’s elasticity. Use a baby washcloth with softer fibers or a facial sponge.
NOT WASHING IN THE MORNING: Cleansing your skin in the morning shower will give the skin a clean slate to allow your daytime serum and sunscreen to better protect and absorb into the skin. Be sure to wash with a mild, sulfate-free cleansing gel. Using the same products: Without a doubt, skin has different needs in different seasons. Products should be lighter-weight in the spring and summer since there is more humidity in the air, and a summer skin care routine should have less exfoliation since more time is spent outdoors. Picking at your skin: Whether it is out of nerves or simply trying to make a blemish go away faster, in the end picking at a blemish will make it worse. A blemish lasts only for five to seven days, but the red, dark scar from messing with it can make it linger longer. Leave the blemish alone and conceal the bump until it heals naturally.

inds of change are sweeping Pakistan’s fashion ramps — from Pashmina kurtas, salwar-kameezes to shararas and ghararas in the past to off-shoulder gowns, sleeveless dresses and even backless outfits now. Off the runway, fashion may be conservative, but designers are attempting to lend a contemporary twist. Intricate embroidery, surface textures, architectural and graphic prints and lawn fabric have been synonymous with Pakistani fashion over the years. The new-age designers are trying to give them a facelift to cater to the style demands of fashionistas. Designer Sania Maskatiya, who participated in the recently-concluded seventh edition of the PFDC (Pakistan Fashion Design Council) Sunsilk Fashion Week 2014, says the sense of style in India and Pakistan is on a par. However, they prefer to play safe. “India and Pakistan are no different. We share
the same culture and sense of style and I love the way Indian designers play with fabrics and patterns. The designer believes Pakistan’s distinct fashion, its prints and flared outfits, have made their own space in the global fashion circuit. “We have also become trendsetters in our own rights, thanks to fashion bodies like PFDC,” she told IANS.
