S Attorney General William Barr has delivered a counter-punch to the Democrats with the explosive assertion that he thought the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had spied on President Donald Trump’s election campaign.

“I think spying did occur,” Barr told a Senate panel on Wednesday in Washington. “I need to explore that.”

After two years of Democrats pursuing Trump with claims that he collaborated with the Russians during the 2016 elections, which an inquiry finally said did not happen, Barr stirred the muddied political waters anew with the claim. “Spying on a political campaign is a big deal,” he said, but went on to add during questioning by senators on the subcommittee that deals with budgetary matters: “I have no specific evidence that I would cite right now.

I do have questions about it.”

Democrats accused Barr of trying to legitimise the accusations of spying on the Trump campaign.

The party’s Senate leader, Chuck Schumer, said: “Perpetuating conspiracy theories is beneath the office of

WikiLeaks’ Assange held WikiLeaks tweeted that Ecuador had acted illegally in terminating Assange’s political asylum “in violation of international law”

ikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was arrested at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London on Thursday, seven years after he took refuge there to avoid extradition to Sweden in a sexual assault case that has since been dropped.

The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) said that Assange was detained “on a warrant issued by Westminster Magistrates’ Court on June 29, 2012, for failing to surrender to the court”, and added that he will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court “as soon as is possible”.

Ecuador’s President Lenin Moreno said it withdrew Assange’s asylum after his repeated violations to international conventions.

But WikiLeaks tweeted that Ecuador had acted illegally in terminating Assange’s political asy-

lum “in violation of international law”.

In 2012, Assange claimed that if

he was extradited to Sweden he might be arrested by the US and face charges relating to WikiLeaks’s publication of hundreds of thousands of US diplomatic cables.

Scotland Yard said in a statement that it was invited into the Embassy by the Ambassador, following the Ecuadorian government’s withdrawal of asylum.

“The MPS had a duty to execute the warrant, on behalf of Westminster magistrates court, and was invited into the Embassy by the Ambassador, following the Ecuadorian government’s withdrawal of asylum.”

UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid tweeted: “Nearly seven years after entering the Ecuadorian Embassy, I can confirm Julian Assange is now in police custody and rightly facing justice in the UK. “I would like to thank Ecuador

for its cooperation & metpoliceuk for its professionalism. No one is above the law.”

UK Foreign Minister Alan Duncan said the arrest followed “extensive dialogue between our two countries”.

US authorities never officially confirmed that they charged Assange, but in November 2018 a mistake in a document filed in an unrelated case hinted that criminal charges might have been prepared in secret.

The court filing, submitted apparently in error by US prosecutors, mentioned criminal charges against someone named “Assange” even though that was not the name of the defendant.

Legal analysts said the error was likely to have been caused by prosecutors copying and pasting from sealed documents.

UK, EU agree ‘flexible’ ‘Fresh evidence of graft against Sharifs’ Brexit delay to Oct 31 IANS, ISLAMABAD

BRUSSELS: The UK and the European Union (EU) have agreed on a “flexible” Brexit delay until October 31, with the option to leave earlier if British Prime Minister Theresa May can secure Parliament’s support for a withdrawal deal, media reports said.

After a working dinner that dragged long into Wednesday night, leaders of the 27 EU nations agreed another delay to Britain’s scheduled withdrawal from the bloc. European leaders were unconvinced by May’s promise that the UK would leave by the end of June, CNN reported.

President of the European Council Donald Tusk, who had originally proposed an extension of up to a year, confirmed the UK had accepted the deal.

“The course of action will be entirely in the UK’s hands: they can still ratify the withdrawal agreement, in which case the extension can be terminated,” he told the media here, adding that the UK could also rethink its strategy or choose to “cancel Brexit altogether”, the BBC reported.

“Let me finish with a message to our British friends: This extension is as flexible as I expected, and a little bit shorter than I expected, but it’s still enough to find the best possible solution.

“Please do not waste this time,” Tusk added.

The new extension means that Britain will more than likely have to hold elections for the European Parliament on May 23, nearly three years after the British people voted to leave the EU. If the UK does not participate in the European Parliament elections, then it will crash out of the bloc without a deal on June 1.

akistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that his government has dug out new proof of corruption and money laundering against the Sharif family members and fresh cases would be instituted against them in the days to come.

Khan’s comments came during a joint meeting of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) parliamentary party and members of the federal and Punjab Cabinets on Wednesday, Dawn online reported.

“The federal and provincial governments’ institutions had collected solid evidence of corruption and money laundering against the Sharifs and cases would soon be instituted formally,” the PTI chief said.

“This will be the first case against the Sharif family members to be instituted by the PTI government,” Khan was quoted as saying by the daily.

Khan expressed resentment over money laundering and corruption that had plagued the country and claimed that the Sharif family members were filling bags of money and laundering it through their frontmen in Dubai, the report said.

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to seven years in prison in December after a ruling that Al-Azizia Steel Mills — a Saudi Arabian firm carrying the name of Sharif’s son — belonged to the PML-N leader who could not demonstrate how the project was funded.

Pakistan Minister asks Britain to return Koh-i-Noor ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Thursday asked Britain to return to Islamabad the famous Koh-i-Noor diamond, which is claimed by India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and also Iran.

The 105-carat diamond has been part of the British crown jewels for the past 150 years.

U

S President Donald Trump has re-nominated an Indian American prosecutor Diane Gujarati to be a federal judge.

The White House announced on Monday that Trump was again sending her nomination to the Senate for confirmation as a judge of the federal court for Eastern New York that has jurisdiction over parts of New York City and Long Island.

She was first nominated by President Barack Obama in 2016.

Trump renominated her last year and both times the full Senate didn’t act on the nomination, even though the Senate Judicial Committee had unanimously approved it.

Gujarati is now the deputy chief of the criminal division of the federal prosecutor’s office for Southern New York that has jurisdiction over Manhattan.

Her father, Damodar Gujarati, is an economics professor at West Point, US Military Academy, that trains officers. Her mother, Ruth

Indian doctor Kulkarni goes missing in the UK LONDON: An Indian doctor has been missing from her home in Herefordshire, West England, since last week, the police said.

The Avon and Somerset Police have issued a missing person’s appeal for Dr Uma Kulkarni in the North Somerset-Bristol area. She was reported missing on April 3, BristolLive reported.

According to the police, Kulkarni’s residence is in Herefordshire in the west Midlands, signalling that she may have traveled to the Bristol area.

She is thought to have traveled into the Avon and Somerset force area as her car — a bronze colored Toyota Auris — was found near Aust Services near to the Severn Bridge crossing.

“Concern is growing for her welfare because there has been no contact from her. We’re urging people living near to the Severn Bridge or in North Somerset to be vigilant,” said a spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Constabulary.

Police officials described Kulkarni as “a 42-yearold Asian woman, five feet tall of slim build”.

“She has black hair and both her ears are pierced. It is not known what Uma was wearing when she went missing,” the police said in a statement.

Kulkarni obtained her MBBS degree from Nagpur University in 1999 and registered with the General Medical Council to practice in the UK in 2015.

he high-tech future of green jobs and the Gandhian virtue of the dignity of work meld their messages on a sixstorey high mural commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the centenary of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

Sporting a Mahatma Gandhi patch on his shoulder, an astronaut floats in space on the mural painted on the side wall of the Indian Mission to the UN that was inaugurated on Tuesday.

The mural that looks up from the vista that opens to the iconic glass-fronted UN building a block away commemorates the occasions.

The other themes on the mural, a joint effort of the ILO and the Indian mission, include the concept of “green”, environmentally sustainable jobs and the greening of the world by planting trees.

India’s Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin said at the inauguration that the mural addresses global concerns of decent jobs and the environment.

The mission building was designed by Indian architect Charles Correa.

He said the mural effort goes beyond the diplomatic work at the UN of dealing with resolutions to a new diplomatic area of reaching out to people to create broader awareness of issues.

Victor Ash, the artist who painted it while perched high on a cherry-picker, told IANS: “I mixed different ideas and came up with this ‘green astronaut’ that is also worker - the worker from the future who would be working in space.”

And to commemorate the anniversary of Gandhi’ birth, he

said he added Gandhi’s image as a logo on the arm of the astronaut.

Ash said that one of his inspirations was India’s record in 2017 of planting 66 million trees on a single day.

The Mission building with a red-stone facade was designed by the internationally acclaimed Indian architect Charles Correa, but one of its sides was bared to the bricks after the neighboring building was torn down and a hotel was built on the site with a deep setback.

ndian cricketers are considered one of the richest in the world, but former India opener Virender Sehwag believes that things could have been very different had it not been for the efforts of the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble among others in 2002.

Speaking with IANS, during the launch of Indo International Premier Kabaddi League (IIPKL), Sehwag said that it was the effort of the senior players 17 years back that saw the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) share the revenue earned with the cricketers — both international and domestic.

“It always helps when you get a share in the revenue along with the fees that you get. Say for example if 100 players are playing and 20 per cent is being shared, then it gets shared equally. That is a permanent income. We had to fight for it. We got 26 per cent for that, something

he two-stage by-elections for 22 vacant assembly seats in Tamil Nadu is advantageous for the ruling AIADMK as the pie has grown bigger now for a safe bite, while it is going to be an acid test for DMK President M.K. Stalin, political analysts said.

They also said in the present situation, there is no threat for the stability of the AIADMK government led by Chief Minister Palaniswami.

There are 22 assembly seats currently vacant in Tamil Nadu. The Election Commission had earlier announced by-elections on April 18 along with the Lok Sabha polls for 18 seats.

On Tuesday, the poll body announced by-elections for four more seats on May 19.

On the other hand, if Dhinakarana’s AMMK wins a couple of seats, then the equation changes in favor of ruling AIADMK, analysts said.

What next for Kerala Congress (Mani)?

ith the last word on the Kerala Congress (Mani) -K.M. Mani - bowing out after being at the helm of all the political upheavals he and his party faced in more than half a century, the question on everyone’s lips is: What’s next for his party.

Eighty-six-year-old Mani, passed away on Tuesday at a private hospital in Kochi, after battling a lung ailment since early this year. The funeral would be held at his home town Pala, about 25 kms from Kottayam.

Mani has never ever lost an Assembly election since, his first outing in 1967 and holds the unique distinction of being a legislator for 52 years. He served as a State Minister, in both the Left and the Congress-led governments and presented 13 state budgets.

Mani joined the undivided Kerala Congress in 1965 and went on to become its undisputed leader.

Over the years, his party underwent several splits and there are as many as seven different parties with the name Kerala Congress who all were at one point or the other part of the undivided Kerala Congress.

The most spoken sentence that’s attributed to the Kerala Congress coined by Mani himself is: “We are a party that splits as we grow and grow as we split.”

The immediate task for Mani’s party is to find his successor and that’s going to be a tough task. For one, there’s his son Jose K. Mani, a two-time Lok Sabha member and presently a member of the Upper House.

Then, there is the party’s working chairman - P.J. Joseph who merged his Kerala Congress (Joseph) with Mani’s in 2010.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha election, there was sudden friction between Joseph and Mani’s son after the father-son duo put their foot down when it came to selecting the candidate for the one seat that Mani’s party gets.

When Joseph demanded the seat

To that extent, he started meeting the Church leadership and senior Congress leaders and said that he and his aides have been given a rough deal and sought their intervention.

Later it became clear the sudden turn was because Joseph realised that Mani’s health was fast deteriorating fast and beat a hasty retreat from his adamant stand.

Earlier, there was speculation that Jose K. Mani’s wife would be drafted into full- time politics but sensing this could backfire, she herself announced that she is not going to enter politics.

Now, as things remain in a fluid state, the first signs if there is going to be a smooth transition will be known when the party decides to find a candidate for the Pala assembly constituency when the by-election is announced.

T

he BJP’s election manifesto released earlier this week affirmed the party’s stand on national security, including the resolve to fight terrorism.

It also mentioned the core ideological issues, announced new pension schemes to counter the Congress’ “Nyay” thrust, and spoke about meeting the aspirations of the people in the next five years, reiterating that the Narendra Modi-led government had met the requirements in the last five years.

The manifesto set short-term targets to be achieved by 2022, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi also talked about laying the foundation for making India a developed country by 2047 when the country will celebrate the centenary of its Independence.

The manifesto mentioned almost all the issues associated with the party, including the construction of a grand Ram temple at Ayodhya, abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and the Uniform Civil Code.

With the tagline “Sankalpit Bharat, Sashakt Bharat” (committed India, strong India), the BJP’s “Sankalp Patra” (manifesto) sought to reach out to all sections of peo-

ple, including the farmers, small shopkeepers, youth, women, the middle class and the poor.

Reaching out to the poor, small farmers and small shopkeepers is crucial for the BJP in view of the Congress’ promise of providing annual minimum income support of Rs 72,000 to 20 per cent of the poorest families in the country if it is voted to power.

The Congress earlier this week unveiled its campaign slogan -- “Ab Hoga Nyay” (Now, there will be

justice). “Nyay” is incidentally the acronym of its minimum income guarantee scheme -- Nyuntam Aay Yojana.

In its manifesto, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said that it would seek to double farmers’ income by 2022, invest Rs 1 lakh crore in higher education, ensure housing for all and 100 per cent electrification in the next three years. It also promised to set up a National Traders Commission.

the small farmers and small shopkeepers and said that the PMKISAN scheme, which provides Rs 6,000 annual assistance to the small farmers, will be extended to all the farmers. After losing power in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh last year, the BJP has been making extra efforts to reach out to the farmers.

The manifesto said that when India will celebrate the 75th year of its Independence in 2022, the country would have fulfilled 75

goals related to agriculture, infrastructure, economy, governance and education, among others.

The 75 goals include the creation of 10,000 new farmer producer organizations, pension for small and marginal farmers above 60 years, digitization of land records, toilets in every household, access to safe and potable drinking water, electrification of all railway tracks, establishment of 1.5 lakh health centers and improving Gross Domestic Product (GDP) share from the manufacturing sector.

The manifesto also talked about the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, over which the party faces opposition from almost all its allies in the Northeast. It said the BJP would enact the bill if it returns to power after the Lok Sabha elections. The party also reiterated its commitment to the Triple Talaq Bill.

Declaring its aim to make India the third largest economy in the world by 2030, the saffron party said it would promote investmentdriven growth to build a “New India” and make it a $10 trillion economy by 2032. The BJP leaders also highlighted the 2016 cross-border surgical strikes and the recent air strike in Balakot by the Indian Air Force (IAF) as examples of the government’s strong resolve against cross-border terrorism.

he Janata Dal-Secular (JDS)-Congress ruling coalition in Karnataka faces a catch-22 situation as the cadres of the two parties are refusing to campaign for each other’s candidates, given their historic rivalry of over three decades.

The JD-S, which heads the government despite lesser seats (37) in the Assembly than its ally the Congress (80), is pulling all stops to at least double its strength in the Lok Sabha elections from 2 to 4 MPs, if not more, to gain some elbow room in the state, party insiders say.

But all efforts are likely to come to a naught in the absence of support from the cadres. “While the leaders of the two parties agreed to jointly contest, there is no bonhomie between cadres for a joint campaign given their bitter feud

over the years,” observed a political analyst.

Under the seat-sharing arrangement arrived at after much wrangling and shadow-boxing, the Congress is contesting 21 seats, though it won only 9 in the 2014 elections against 17 by the BJP. “As we are sharing power in the state, a pre-poll alliance to jointly contest the Lok Sabha polls will prevent division of votes in a straight fight with the BJP, unlike in a triangular contest that benefits our rival party (BJP),” JD-S spokesman Ramesh Babu told IANS. Though H.D. Deve Gowda initially bargained hard with Congress President Rahul Gandhi for 12 seats, he reconciled to contest 7 seats after giving up the eighth seat (Bangalore North) to the Congress for want of a winnable candidate against BJP’s sitting member and Union Minister D.V.

Of the 7 seats, the JD-S is contesting four -- Hassan, Mandya, Tumkur and Udupi-Chikamangalur -- going to polls on April 18 in the central and southern regions and three -- Bijapur (Vijayapura), Shimoga and Uttara Kannada -- going to vote on April 23 in the coastal and northern regions.

To retain its bastions, Hassan and Mandya, in the old Mysuru region, the party has fielded Deve Gowda’s two grandsons -- Prajwal and Nikhil. Prajwal is son of Gowda’s second son and state PWD minister H.D. Revanna, and Nikhil is son of Gowda’s third son and Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.

Deve Gowda himself is contesting from Tumkur, and not his old constituency Hassan, from where he won for record six times since 1991.

What makes elections different for BJP in UP Despite the battle over ‘Ali and Bajrangbali’, the Bharatiya Janata Party failed to ensure a religious polarization in western UP AMITA VERMA, LUCKNOW

A

s polling for eight Lok Sabha seats in western Uttar Pradesh concluded on Thursday, the advantage to the ruling BJP does not seem as enhanced as it was five years ago. Despite the battle over ‘Ali and Bajrangbali’, the BJP failed to ensure a religious polarization in western UP. In 2014, the region -- smarting over the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots -- was communally surcharged and the divide between Muslims and Jats was palpable.

Five years later, the divisions have blurred and the Rashtriya Lok Dal, through a series of meetings with Khap leaders, has ensured that Muslims and Jats reconcile to a large extent.

Surprisingly, Muslims have maintained studied silence and have refused to react to attempt to provoke them and this has prevented polarization on religious lines. Dalits who form the second largest group in this region, have also not made their preferences clear, leaving political parties guessing.

Five years ago, the then Akhilesh government faced a strong antiincumbency wave in this region, mainly due to its apathetic handling of the riot situation.

The anti-SP wave was so pronounced that Akhilesh Yadav did not campaign in the Kairana by-election last year and his candidate Tabassum Hasan managed to win the seat on an RLD ticket.

It is now the BJP that faces a double anti-incumbency, with its governments both at the Centre and state.

The state government is particularly on the target because of the shutting down of slaughter houses that have affected meat traders and

exporters in the region.

Cane farmers, whose dues are still pending, are up in arms against the Yogi government and UP ministers who have campaigned in the area, have been at the receiving end.

The mob lynching of an inspector allegedly by rightwing activists following a cow slaughter incident in Bulandshahr in December last year has also earned flak for the Yogi government.

Besides, the BJP faces a comparatively united opposition -- united on the issue of defeating the BJP.

Though the divisions within the opposition may still work in BJP’s favour in a multi-cornered contest, the fact remains that it has demoralized party workers to an extent.

Polling in these eight constituencies on Thursday has been marked by allegations and counter-allegations. Former Union minister Sanjiv Baliyan alleged that “burqa clad women” were being allowed to cast fake votes.

The BSP, on the other hand, alleged that Dalits were being prevented by the police from casting their votes.

PATNA: Despite several villages boycotting polls in the four Lok Sabha constituencies in Bihar on development issues, around 53 per cent voting was recorded amid few incidents of clashes and malfunctioning of EVMs on Thursday.

Of the 70 lakh people, around 53 per cent voted by the end of the day in the Maoist-affected districts of Gaya, Nawada and Jamui in the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in the state.

A few incidents of clashes were reported in some places, a poll official said. In Nawada, officials said, a youth was injured when some people opened fire at a booth during a clash between two groups.

Earlier in the day, crude bombs found near three polling booths in Gaya and one in Aurangabad caused brief panic. All bombs were defused by the police.

There were reports of glitches in electronic voting machines (EVMs) at some booths which were later fixed. At more than half a dozen villages in Gaya, Jamui and Nawada, people boycotted elections protesting lack of roads, schools and health centres. According to the State Election Commission officials, over 41,000 security personnel were deployed in the area that went to polls.

“There have been many people in Indian history who had the arrogance to believe that they are

invincible and bigger than the people of the country,” he said.

“Modi has done nothing for the people in the past five years and his invincibility will be there for all to see after elections.”

Sonia Gandhi told reporters that she was confident of the love of the people of Rae Bareli.

Asked whether she believed that Modi was invincible, she said “Remember 2004. Vajpayeeji was (considered) invincible but we won.” Sonia Gandhi was also accompanied by Congress General Secretary and her daughter Priyanka Gandhi, her husband Robert Vadra and their children.

“Criminal Justice” never falls short of expectations. There is an admirable fluidity in the storytelling as we journey through hell with the protagonist Aditya. Having a bunch of the most accomplished actors available to mankind, helps give the ten episodes an irresistible heft.

While every actor is in-sync with

the dark, gripping mood of a crime that isn’t as simple as it seems, no one gets it better than Pankaj Tripathi. Playing a sleazy low-down lawyer slumming it out at police stations pimping for desperate clients, Pankaj brings to his character a moral centre in spite of his seeming dissipation.

“Criminal Justice” plays out the crime investigation, courtroom intrigue and prison horror in bouts of brilliantly written scenes (by Shridhar Raghavan). The writing is in fact, far superior to that in the overrated “Sacred Games”. What “Criminal Justice” tells us about the subverted judicial system is far more relevant than the ‘thriller’ intentions that play out on the surface of this edge-of-the-seat crime drama.

he tripped and almost fell, but his biceps saved her. That’s just what happened with Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas on a recent outing.

In a video doing the rounds, Nick and Priyanka are seen keeping to their routine of walking hand in hand on a stairway. While Priyanka, dressed in black, was busy waving to fans, happy to see the couple, she tripped.

hile “How’s the josh?” from the film “Uri: The Surgical Strike” remains etched in the minds of Hindi movie lovers, the film’s director Aditya Dhar says that at one point during the shoot, he was about to change the line following a suggestion from actor Vicky Kaushal.

Recalling the incident, Dhar said: “We first shot the line ‘How’s the josh?’ during the Myanmar sequence. Two minutes before the camera rolled, Vicky came to me and asked me to change the line because he thought somewhere the ‘feel’ was not coming. I tried to explain that to motivate their team, army commanders talk like that, so let’s give it a try.”

But Nick was by her side in her “oops” moment. She held on to his arm and regained her balance, with a huge smile on her face, followed by a laugh.

It is one of those moments that has made Nick and Priyanka one of the most watched out among the celebrity couples on the social media.

Their wedding in Jodhpur last December drew widespread global media attention.

Ground Breaking Ceremony of Cricket Project in Hanover Park

BY DR. NILESH D. MEHTA HANOVER PARK, IL- Cricket in the United States is being played at several locations and that too at competitive levels. Several leagues in major cities across the country have been locking horns to gain supremacy for their territorial bragging rights. Cricket Council USA has continued to engage in cricket activities not only in Florida but slowly expanding their presence in Georgia and Illinois among other geographic areas. This organization has provided a platform for the players to play the sport in different parts of the country. CCUSA classifies itself as a ‘Sports and Entertainment Management Organisation’ and is famous for its annual T20 competition held every year in Florida. It remains a non-sanctioned organisation with no affiliation to the United States of America Cricket Association (USACA).

Baseball continues to be the favorite summer sport for folks in the USA. Having drawn some parallel as an entertainment package from this sport, the concept of Twenty20 was born more than a decade ago. Within a few years, there are leagues of this ultrashort format of cricket all over the world including Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

It certainly provides a result oriented, fast paced, entertaining cricket. Purists argue that Twenty20 is not real cricket, however, this is what brings cricketainment to the current generation of cricket fans. Even in the USA, many years, several leagues and tournaments with the short format have become popular.

While the climate for year long cricket is certainly not conducive to Chicago, there are enough clubs and interested cricketers in the windy city to garner attention for this sport.

Suburban population of folks from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka is increasing rapidly and would certainly justify the creation of a new cricket stadium in Hanover Park, Illinois.

At the ground-breaking ceremony of this cricket project on Saturday, April 6, 2019, enthusiastic members of the Midwest Cricket Conference welcomed the crowd. Mayor of Hanover Park, Mr. Rodney S. Craig, initially

welcomed his staff and thanked them for their involvement in this ambitious project. Speaking to HiINDiA, Mr. Craig said, “it is an amazing day for the village of Hanover Park. This has been a dream of the South Asian community. My staff has worked with Shiraz Najam, MAQ and his team mates to make this work.”

Shiraz Najam, President of Midwest Cricket Conference, diligently took his time to thank all of the invited guests at the inauguration of this concept in Hanover Park. Around 20 acres of land will be provided for building this modern cricket facility. Details of the cricket facility are not fully forthcoming at this time. For now, clean-up of the area will be undertaken and construction will hopefully start in a few months from now.

Chirag Patel has been Shiraz’s able ally in this project. Shiraz thanked the Mayor of Hanover Park for joining hands in this major endeavor for the cricket loving community. Shiraz commented, “One needs a vision and then resources for any project’s success.” He added,” I would like extend my sincere thanks to MAQ and Mr. Amin Markatia.”

Cricket administrator and businessman, Mahammad “Maq” Qureshi has been largely instrumental in helping with project. His enterprising attitude and infusion of dollars in this project certainly has propelled this concept

favorably. Through his cricket sponsorship and vision, he has been making strides for the promotion of cricket in the United States. He is also CEO and Founder of CCUSA - Cricket Council United States of America. Mahammad Qureshi has been the mastermind behind this project and speaking to HiINDiA said,” I had always thought of some international level stadium in Chicago. I want to thank the mayor of Hanover Park Mr. Rodney S. Craig for joining hands with us. We have worked long and hard to make this a reality and it fills me with great pride that we can finally have a home for cricket in Chicago.”

Indian community leaders like Sunil Shah, Neil Khot, and Heena Trivedi were also spotted during this event. Speaking to HiINDiA, they collectively shared a common sentiment of the importance of a cricket stadium. They all felt that this will bring the communities together and promote cricket in the Midwest. Several dignitaries from the Pakistani community were also present in support of this event.

Saturday, April 6, 2019 will go down in history books as a day when cricket in the Midwest took a mega step. Hopefully, in the near future, this venue will be able to host international matches.

DHS Indian American Tech Manager Admits Stealing Database

BY A STAFF WRITER STERLING, VA- A federal technology manager admitted Thursday to conspiring with a former acting inspector general of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to steal a data¬base managing more than 150,000 internal investigations and containing personal data of nearly 250,000 DHS employees, court filings show.

The manager gave copies of the database — valued at more than $3.1 million and including “critical, confidential information,” a federal judge said at a plea hearing — to a former DHS acting inspector general to develop a commercial version of the management system and sell that back to other government agencies.

Sonal Patel, 44, of Sterling, Va., faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit theft of government property, and agreeing to cooperate with prosecutors regarding a scheme that ran from 2014 to 2017.

“I plead guilty,” said Patel, who was accompanied by attorney Thomas C. Hillin court.

U.S. District Judge Rosemary M. Collyer of Washington accepted the plea and set a hearing date for June 5.

As part of a plea deal, Collyer agreed to delay sentencing while Patel cooperates with prosecutors with the U.S. attorney’s office for the District of Columbia and the Justice Department’s public integrity section. Under the deal, prosecutors agreed not to charge Patel with any other offenses.

Officials did not name “Co-Conspirator 1” in court papers, but detailed a government work history and identified an associated Maryland business that the person founded.

A former DHS acting inspector general whose biography appears to match the court filings and appears to have founded a business of the same name, according to online corporate records, did not return telephone messages Thursday seeking an interview.

According to plea filings, Patel worked as a branch chief in the information technology division of the inspector general’s office and oversaw the development and maintenance of its Enforcement Database System, which was modeled after a similar ¬inspector-general system with the U.S. Postal Service, where Patel worked before 2009.

From October 2014 until 2017, Patel “used your position within the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General to access and create copies of EDS’s source code, [the] database and personal identifying information” of DHS and Postal Service employees “to provide to co-conspirators to develop a private, commercial version of ‘EDS 2.0,’” Collyer said, reciting the government’s evidence.

Patel’s partners worked to develop and sell a commercial version to the U.S. Agriculture Department, Collyer said.

The government cited email correspondence from Patel’s work and personal accounts and online meetings in June 2016 and March 2017 between her, Co-Conspirator 1 and an Indianbased software development company, which the conspirator’s company had allegedly contracted to develop a private version of the DHS investigation case-management system.

Court filings also show that Co-Conspirator 1 worked at DHS from February 2008 until 2013, including as acting inspector general, and before that at the Transportation Security Administration and the Postal Service, where he supervised Patel.

The database included tracking information for all investigations into allegations of criminal, civil or administrative wrong¬doing by DHS workers, contractors, grant recipients, beneficiaries and other associated entities between 2002 and 2017, the department said in a January 2018 privacy notice.
