Trump warns N Korea’s destruction North Korea in a reply has issued a threat saying “we will strike a merciless blow at the heart of the US with our powerful nuclear hammer, honed and hardened over time”
ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS
‘Trump’s threat sounds like dog barking’
I
n an unprecedented warning delivered at this world forum, US President Donald Trump has threatened North Korea with total destruction if his country is forced to defend itself and its allies against the threats from Pyongyang. Delivering his first address to the high-level meeting of the General Assembly, Trump said that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un “threatens the entire world with unthinkable loss of life” and if the US was “forced to defend itself and its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea”. North Korea has issued a threat that “we will strike a merciless blow at the heart of the US with our powerful nuclear hammer, honed and hardened over time”. “Rocket man is on a suicide mission,” Trump said, with a derisive reference to Kim. But he said that he hoped the UN would be able to stop North Korea. “That’s what the United Nations is for. Let’s see how they do.
Hillary’s book sells 300,000 copies NEW YORK: Hillary Clintons new book “What Happened,” about her stunning loss in 2016 to Donald Trump, has sold more than 300,000 copies in its opening week. This figure, disclosed by the publisher Simon & Schuster, reflects combined sales in all formats of hardcover, e-book and audio. According to sales figures from Nielsen BookScan, which tracks 85 percent of book sales in the United States (excluding digital and audio sales), Clinton has sold 167,000 hardcover copies of her book since it came out on September 12. The publisher has said that when you account for ebook and audiobook sales, Clinton’s sales numbers surpass 300,000 copies. The book’s hardcover sales is also the highest opening for any nonfiction release in five years. Mark Owen’s “No Easy Day,” a 2012 memoir about the killing of Osama bin Laden, sold more than 250,000 copies in its first week. Sales for “What Happened” far exceeded the first week numbers of more than 100,000 copies for Clinton’s book about her years as secretary of state, “Hard Choices.

“If the righteous many don’t confront the wicked few, then evil will triumph,” he said. Trump’s other target was Iran and in a statement aimed more at his domestic base, he said the denuclearization agreement with Tehran was “an embarrassment to the United States”. He threatened to revisit the agreement reached with Iran by
the administration of former President Barack Obama and five other UN members. He called Iran a “rogue nation” and accused it of destabilizing the Middle East. Trump, who took office in January, also focussed on himself. He opened his address by saying that the US had done well since he entered the White House. The
NEW YORK: North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho said US President Donald Trump’s threat to destroy Pyongyang sounded like “a dog barking”. “If he was thinking he could scare us with the sound of a dog barking, that’s really a dog dream,” Ri, who is here for the UN General Assembly, told the media this week. In Korean, a dog dream is one that is absurd and makes little
stock market was at an all time high and unemployment in the US was at its lowest level. Trump told the world leaders at the UN that terrorists were gaining strength everywhere but insisted that peace was possible. “To put it simply, we meet at a time of both immense promise and great peril. Terrorists and extremists have gathered strength and spread
to every region of the planet.” The US, he said, was prepared to combat global instability through military might. “Our military will soon be the strongest it has ever been.” He underlined that he would always put American interests above all else. And he quickly urged other nations to do the same.
agreed upon by President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the White House in June and Trump announced his daughter would lead the US delegation. “Women First, Prosperity for
All” is the theme of the GES to be held in November, an appropriate topic for Ivanka Trump, who is an entrepreneur in her own right having started her own line of jewellery, handbags, shoes and other fashion accessories, besides working in her father’s real estate business. US State Department spokesperson for South Asian media, Helaena White, called the GES “a further sign of our broad and enduring partnership”. “The event will highlight India’s enabling environment for innovation and entrepreneurship, including actions by the government to increase the ease of doing business, eliminating unnecessary regulations and supporting startups,” White told IANS.

Though Trump’s speeches typically employ colorful rhetoric, threatening another country with destruction was unprecedented for a US President and took diplomats aback, CNN reported. “The US has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea,” Trump said in the Tuesday speech. —IANS
Divisive politics ruining India’s reputation abroad IANS, NEW YORK
C
ongress Vice President Rahul Gandhi took a strong hit at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, saying that “divisive politics” was ruining India’s reputation of peace and harmony abroad. Speaking at an event on Wednesday here organized by the Indian National Overseas Congress (INOC), Gandhi said India has many religions and different languages and people have been able to live happily together
because of the ideas of the Congress. He said the single biggest thing that people asked him during his incumbent visit to the US was:
“What happened to the tolerance that prevailed in India? What happened to the harmony?” “For thousands of years, India
has had a reputation of peace and harmony. This is being challenged. “There are forces in our country that are dividing the country. It is very dangerous for the country and it ruins our reputation abroad... Divisive politics is going on and it has to be fought,” Gandhi said. “India’s reputation in the world is very important. The world is transforming and people are looking towards us. “Many countries in a violent world are looking towards India and saying may be India has the answer for peaceful coexistence.”

F

However, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Justice H.L. Dattu, present at the function where Rajnath Singh spoke, said the Commission would back Rohingyas because they were being persecuted in Myanmar. “We need to understand the reality that Rohingyas from Myanmar who have entered India are not refugees. P THANE (MAHARASHTRA): After arresting Iqbal Ibrahim Kaskar for running an extortion racket, the police on Tuesday said they are probing the direct or indirect involvement of his brother, absconding mafia don Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar, in the racket and could make him an accused in the case. Iqbal Kaskar was taken into custody from his home in south Mumbai late on Monday night in a high security operation involving multiple police agencies. According to police, he was watching the “Kaun Banega Crorepati” TV show and eating biryani when they picked him up from the home of his deceased sister, Haseena Parker in Nagpada south Mumbai. Kaskar and a close relative, Mumtaz Eijaz Shaikh and another associate Israr Al-Jamil Sayyad were arrested by a crack team of Thane Police Anti-Extortion Cell led by former encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma. The three have been nabbed for allegedly running an extortion racket since 2013. Three others have been detained for detailed questioning.

Amid a debate on whether Rohingyas should be deported or given refuge in India, the Home Ministry on Monday, in an affidavit to the Supreme Court, called them a “security threat to India”. The court will hear the issue on October 3. The Home Minister told the seminar that by deporting the Rohingyas, India would not be violating any international law. “India is not even a signatory to the 1951 UN Refugee Convention”. Rajnath Singh chided human rights activists for criticizing India’s stance on Rohingyas.

BRIEFS ‘Pass Women’s Reservation Bill’
NEW DELHI: Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to urgently pass the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha where the BJP has a majority. In a letter to Modi, Gandhi said: “You may recall that the Rajya Sabha had passed the Women’s Reservation Bill on March 9, 2010. Since then, however, it has languished in the Lok Sabha for one reason or another. “I am writing to request you to take advantage of your majority in the Lok Sabha to now get the Women’s Reservation Bill passed in the Lower House as well,” she said.

P
resident Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday led the nation in mourning the death of Marshal of Indian Air Force (IAF) Arjan Singh, who is remembered for his role in leading the fledgling IAF in the 1965 war with Pakistan. His last rites were performed amid a 17-gun salute and a flypast at Delhis Cantonment area on Monday. Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the three service chiefs, and several former chiefs and senior officers were among those who paid tribute to the soldier, mostly remembered for his military leadership during the 1965 war with Pakistan.

A flypast by India’s most potent fighter jet Su-30 and Mi-17 V5 helicopters was carried out and a 17gun salute by the ceremonial battery honored the Marshal who died on
Saturday after a massive cardiac arrest. He was 98. President Kovind said he was “extremely saddened to learn about the passing of our great and cher-
ished air warrior — a hero of World War II who won our nation’s gratitude for his military leadership in the 1965 War”. Modi, who was in Gujarat to dedicate the Sardar Sarovar Dam to the nation on his birthday, paid tributes to the “brave soldier”. “Even at the age of 98, he would be dressed in uniform. He would come on a wheelchair but whenever he would see me, he would stand. He was a soldier, he never forgot his discipline.” In Delhi, Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman laid a wreath on the air warrior’s body on behalf of the Prime Minister. Former Defense Minister and Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar called Arjan Singh the father of IAF’s modernization efforts.

Proof of pudding is winning
For Rahul Gandhi to succeed, he has to ascertain what went wrong with the Congress in 2014. If it was due to arrogance, as he said recently in the US, he has to find out whose haughtiness let the party down AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
O
ne of the main takeaways from Rahul Gandhi’s interaction with the students and the media in the US is the indication that he has given about being the Congress’ Prime Ministerial candidate in 2019 — if his party approves. It is possible that the charge against him of being a “reluctant” politician and even “stupid”, which he admitted, made him say that he is willing to play a more proactive role and be his party’s “face” in the next general elections. If anything, the declaration of intent means that it will not be long before he becomes the Congress president. There is also the implication that he will be increasingly seen on public platforms which was earlier promised by some of his party members, especially at the time of his unprepossessing television interview in 2014, but never implemented. For Rahul Gandhi’s supporters, it was probably just as well that he agreed to go to the US shortly after visiting Norway. The reason is that contrary to the feeling that the Congress Vice President was more interested in traveling abroad than in politics at home, his exchanges at the University of California in Berkeley showed that he is maturing

as a politician — even if slowly. Two confessions, underline this point. One is on the profusion of dynastic politics in India even if he has been criticized for being out of touch with aspirational India. The other is the admission that the Congress’s “arrogance” made it lose contact with the people a decade after coming to power in 2004. As for the children of politicians following in the footsteps of their
fathers, he said that there are any number of such instances in India. It isn’t only the Nehru-Gandhis who are guilty of this practice but also the Abdullahs in Kashmir, the Badals in Punjab, the Karunanidhis in Tamil Nadu, along with the Mulayam Singh Yadavs and Lalu Prasads in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar respectively. Then, there is Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who is
the son of a former Chief Minister, Biju Patnaik; Union minister Jayant Sinha, who is the son of a former Union minister, Yashwant Sinha; BJP MP Anurag Thakur, who is the son of a former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Prem Kumar Dhumal; Uttar Pradesh legislator Pankaj Singh, who is the son of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and so on. It is now up to Rahul Gandhi to
prove or disprove Union Minister Smriti Irani’s quip about being a “failed dynast”, but he is right about dynasticism being a fact of life in India — in politics, in films, in the corporate sector, in the legal profession — even if it is not something to gloat about. In America, too, there are the Clintons and the George Bushes while earlier there were the Kennedys, and in Pakistan, there are the Bhuttos. The proof of the pudding lies, of course, in the eating, and in the case of dynasts it is in the winning of elections which matters — something which Smriti Irani, a successful actress and a failed Human Resource Development Minister, is yet to achieve. For Rahul Gandhi to succeed, he has first to ascertain what went wrong with the Congress in 2014. If it was due to arrogance, as he has said, he has to find out whose haughtiness let the party down. Since Manmohan Singh is generally not associated with hauteur, was it the attitude of Sonia Gandhi, who has been called — perhaps unfairly — the power behind the throne? In any event, it is difficult to believe in the Congress being conceited at a time when it was immersed in a plethora of scams which brought about its downfall. So, there must be some other explanation for its decline and fall.

Then District Magistrate Prashanta Kumar Mishra, who later became Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary, says in his just released autobiography that Gandhi visited Mirzapur three or four times during his tenure there. “Her first visit was absolutely a private one which was communicated to me only in the morning and she was to land in the evening,” says Mishra in the book In Quest of a Meaningful Life.
“The time was short but nonetheless we succeeded in providing her presentable accommodation at the Asthabhuja Inspection Bungalow. My wife took pains to do the décor of the room where the Prime Minister was to stay.” According to the author, Gandhi performed a long “puja” at night at the Ashtabhuja temple and then returned to the bungalow. The next morning, she expressed a desire to have a hot jalebee and mathri with pickle for breakfast. “I was surprised as I was not prepared for such a demand,” says Mishra, a 1972 batch IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre who has held several prominent positions both at the Centre and in the state during a career spanning 41 years. As he felt helpless, his tehsildar
volunteered to come up with the jalebee and mathri from the Vindhyachal area. “Sir, don’t worry about such a small thing,” he told the perplexed District Magistrate. “He rushed and procured hot jalebee prepared in desi ghee, mathri and pickle. I heaved a sigh of relief. I was told later that the Prime Minister was happy with the desi (local) breakfast.” Once when Mishra was going towards the Asthabhuja temple, a “sadhu” (holy man) praised him for ensuring good roads, power connection as well as drinking water facility for pilgrims. “You are doing good work and I am sure one day you will be the chief of the Uttar Pradesh administration,” he told the District Magistrate.

T
housands of emergency crews and volunteers raced against time in search of survivors on Wednesday after a powerful 7.1magnitude earthquake shook Mexico, killing at least 230 people, leaving many trapped under collapsed buildings and forcing people on to the streets for a second time in two weeks. As President Enrique Pena Nieto announced a national emergency, rescuers armed with cutting tools and sniffer dogs in Mexico City continued to scramble to reach survivors of the 2.15 p.m. Tuesday disaster pinned inside the ruins of offices, schools and apartment blocks amid plumes of dust and wailing sirens. Local residents, police and firefighters used their hands to dig through the rubble. “The priority now is continue rescuing those who are still trapped

London Tube attack: Sixth suspect detained LONDON: A sixth suspect has been detained over last week’s terror attack on a London Tube train, the Metropolitan Police said on Thursday. Scotland Yard said a 17-year-old was arrested after midnight at a house in Thornton Heath, in south London, which was being searched by the police, reports Efe news. All the suspects arrested so far were being interrogated at a south London police station. The failed attack took place in a crowded Tube train carriage at Parsons Green station.
‘Zardari involved in Benazir Bhutto’s assassination’ ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Thursday accused Peoples Party of Pakistan leader Asif Ali Zardari of “having the most to gain from Benazir Bhutto’s murder,” in a video posted on his official Facebook page. The video came days after he was accused of being involved in the murder. “Asif Ali Zardari is responsible for the Bhutto family’s demise and is involved in the deaths of Benazir and Murtaza Bhutto,” he said in a startling address directed at the three Bhutto-Zardari children, the Bhutto family and the people of Sindh.

aftershocks. Mexico City, the country’s capital, was the worst hit. Also battered were the states of Puebla, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Morelos, CNN and Efe news said. The quake’s epicenter was 4.5 km east-northeast of San Juan Raboso
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has spoken by phone with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto as Mexico recovers from a powerful earthquake that hit the country on Tuesday. Trump on Wednesday offered search-and-rescue assistance to Mexican authorities and said teams are already on the way, according to the White House, The Hill reported. “The President also pledged to continue close coordination with Mexico as the two countries respond to the recent earthquakes and hurricanes,” the White House said in a statement. The call came one day after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake rocked Mexico City and the surrounding area, killing over 200 people.

Three days of national mourning have been declared, but the mood on the street is less of sorrow than of determination to find survivors, bury the dead and quickly begin the task of rebuilding after the powerful temblor, which struck central Mexico on the 32-year anniversary of the catastrophic 1985 earthquake that caused thousands of deaths. The quake was felt far and wide. In Mexico City, there were power outages and more than 40 buildings collapsed crushing cars and trapping people inside. There was widespread panic, the media reports said. All public and private schools in Mexico City and some of the states affected by the earthquake will remain closed until further notice, Education Minister Aurelio Nuno tweeted.

Pakistan PM flags greater role for India in Afghanistan IANS, UNITED NATIONS
P
akistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has complained to the United States about the greater role President Donald Trump wants for India in Afghanistan, according to media reports. Pakistan Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua said that in a meeting here on Tuesday with Vice President Mike Pence, Abbassi expressed concern over the greater role that Trump advocated for India in his new Afghan policy, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan. She also also said that Abbasi told him that Pakistan categorically rejected allegations against Islamabad in Trump’s Afghan policy

speech last month adding that “scapegoating Pakistan will not help bring stability to Afghanistan,” the news agency reported.
A statement from Abbasi’s office only said that the “Prime Minister shared Pakistan’s concerns and views with regard to the US strate-
gy for South Asia” and Januja’s remarks expanded on that. In his address to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday Trump had again reiterated his warning of strong action against countries that support or finance organizations like the Taliban, but did not name Pakistan as he had in his speech last month on Afghanistan. Significantly, Trump did not meet Abbassi, as he had some other prime ministers like Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu, and had delegated it to his Vice President. Abbasi’s office statement said the discussions with Pence on the sidelines of the General Assembly meeting took place in a “cordial atmosphere”.

Indian doctor stabbed to death Umar Rashid Dutt, who appeared before Judge Jeffrey Goering, was charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Achutha Reddy in Kansas IANS, WASHINGTON
Murder suspect was sent to India to straighten out, says a report
A
renowned Indian doctor who expounded a system called “Absolute Yoga” has been stabbed to death in Kansas state in the US. One of his patients was arrested for the killing, police said. Achutha Reddy, a psychiatrist who hailed from Telangana, was murdered at his clinic in East Wichita last week. An Indian American man, Umar Rashid Dutt, was arrested and charged with first degree murder, according to TV station KAKE. The man accused of killing a Wichita psychiatrist made his first appearance in court on September 18. He appeared before Judge Jeffrey Goering and was charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Reddy. Reddy, 57, is the second Indian killed this year in Kansas. Another Telangana resident, Srinivas Kuchibhotla, was shot dead in Olathe in February. Media reports quoted the police as saying that the assailant repeatedly stabbed the doctor after a conversation. The attack on Reddy began in his clinic and ended in a nearby lane as the fleeing doctor was chased down by the assailant. Police Lieutenant Todd Ojile said on Thursday that the office manager of Reddy’s Holistic Psychiatric Services heard a distur-

But Reddy was chased by the assailant and killed in a second assault in an alley behind the clinic, Ojile said. He said Reddy had several stab wounds and was pronounced dead by the emergency medical team that responded. Dutt was arrested near a country club a short time later when a security guard alerted police to a man covered with blood in a car, Ojile said. Reddy’s wife Beena is also a doc-
tor. Fellow doctors and members of the community described his death as a tragic loss to society. Hailing from Nalgonda in Telangana, Reddy graduated from Osmania Medical College in 1986. He moved to the US where he completed his residency in psychiatry from the University of Kansas Medical School in Wichita. Reddy was affiliated to various hospitals in the region and was known to be a yoga and fitness expert. He expounded a system he called “Absolute Yoga”. Dutt, who grew up in Wichita with his parents and sister, completed high school in 2014 and did a few semesters at Wichita State University but did not graduate. “Sometimes he would be talking about smoking, partying and a lot or drinking with his friends. “There were often a lot of arguments between him and his parents like his mom would walk by and see that maybe he wasn’t paying attention so she would be like ‘Omar you need to focus, you need to really care about your education’,” Schrader told KWCH. —IANS
he Indian outbound traveler is now a much-coveted commodity around the world, as the country’s booming middle class seeks new destinations and emerges as a key market. The Indian market has set a new record as 1.17 million tourists visited the US last year, according to Brand USA, the nation’s first public-private partnership to promote the United States as a travel destination. “Brand USA has reached the million visitor mark from India, we expect much more growth. This year has seen our largest delegation of our Brand USA India mission with nearly 40 organizations, we actually had a waiting list of people wanting to tap the indian market. And that really shows the importance that India has,” Suzana Shepard, Manager Global Trade Development Brand USA, said during a branding event orga-

nized by Brand USA representative Sartha Global Marketing in New Delhi. In February, Brand USA inaugurated the US-India travel and tourism partnership year in Delhi, led by the US Department of Commerce’s National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO). The NTTO had forecast a 72 per cent increase in arrivals from 2015
through 2021. While business travelers and family visits have been the norm so far, more Indians travel to less visited states and try new activities involving adventure and thrills. “Indians are big consumers of adventure activities and this is exactly what we got in Nevada for them. The US is very much a road trip destination and there is
so much to see, different landscapes, just like in India I guess but with a different decor, different people and a great melting pot of cultures,” said Claudia Vecchio, Director of the Department of Tourism & Cultural Affairs in Nevada. According to Brand USA, India ranks 11th in international visitors and also represents the sixth biggest spender with $13.6 billion registered last year. “There is really a great opportunity, only one per cent of the population has a passport and there is a growing middle class. It leaves room for a lot development,” Shepard said. The increasing number of direct flights from India by national carrier Air India has also helped in catering to the tourists’ demand, the latest being Delhi-Washington DC. A couple of years ago, Air India also added San Francisco to its other non-stop flights to New York, Chicago and Newark. The carrier is said to be evaluating a direct flight to Los Angeles as well.

he Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has nominated veteran star Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the Padma Bhushan, the nation’s third highest civilian award. “Yes, it’s confirmed, we have recommended Dhoni’s name for the Padma Bhushan,” BCCI Acting President C.K. Khanna told IANS this week. Former captains Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, Rahul Dravid and Chandu Borde have received the award earlier. Dhoni, who made his international debut in 2004, is the most successful captain for the Indian cricket team. He has led the team to two World Cup titles — the World Twenty20 in 2007 and the 50-over World Cup in 2011. Under the 36-year-old’s captaincy, India also won the 2013 Champions Trophy besides becoming the top ranked team in Test cricket. He has scored 4,876 runs in 90 Test matches, which includes six centuries and 33 half-centuries. In (ODIs) he is the fourth highest scorer for India with 9,739 runs in
Dhoni can play 2023 World Cup too: Clarke KOLKATA: Former Australia captain Michael Clarke is not ruling out the possibility of wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni being part of India’s 2023 World Cup plans. “Don’t ask me whether he will play in the 2019 World Cup. He will play in 2023,” Clarke said smiling when quizzed whether the former India captain could play the ICC
2019 World Cup in England. Whether Clarke meant it or not is anybody’s guess, but the in-form Ranchi batsman who has led India to 2011 World Cup glory on home soil has been in good form lately. his display with the bat. Back then, Dhoni initially took the posers in his stride, but as they started coming at him with unfailing regularity, he decided to go on a counter-attack. But this year, when questions were being raised about whether Dhoni should continue in the limited overs format, the former captain turned it around, by wielding his willow in style. At 36, he has taken up the role of the anchor. For the young ones he is an on-field mentor as well.

ormer Australia skipper Michael Clarke has said Steve Smith still has challenges ahead as a captain and he has to find a way for his team to succeed. “As captain, he is challenged right now. He needs to find a way for his team to succeed. It’s an important few months for Australia,” Clarke, 36, said during a promotional event here. “He is a terrific batsman and has been that for a long time now. I feel alongwith Virat (Kohli) these two are the best batsmen in the world right now,” Clarke said. “As captain your first responsibility is to win games and give confidence to the team.” Asked how opener David Warner, who played his first-ever ODI in India this week, would cope with chinaman Kuldeep
Yadav, who got the southpaw’s back, Clarke said: “David’s been playing really well. “He spent sometime in Bangladesh. It’s hard to look at just one game. He will find a way out. He will have a look of impact in this series. Hopefully in Kolkata one of those two guys, will come good,” Clarke added.
ong-term preparation of agegroup national teams is now a regular and welcome feature in Indian football and can lead to a better future. For the U-17 World Cup to be held in six cities in India for the first time in October 2017, a squad of talented youngsters has been training for two years. Players from the northeast, including 11 from Manipur, are part of India’s U-17 squad. To increase the pool of talented players, “The Overseas Scouting “ project was launched as a joint venture between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the Sports Authority of India (SAI). Sons of non-resident Indians could send videos of their matches and experts decided if they could be chosen for the national squad. Many applied and the mission was successful, as there are two new recruits in the Indian
U-17 World Cup squad: Canadabased goalkeeper Sunny Dhaliwal and US-based Namit Deshpande. Chief Operating Officer of the Indian U-17 World Cup Squad, exinternational Abhishek Yadav, is positive about getting overseas players in the national squad. He says: “Overseas players bring diversity into the team. They have a different perspective; they have grown up playing against different nationali-
ties, are used to a different climate.” The AIFF has left no stone unturned to prepare the Indian team for the U-17 World Cup. Former Chief Coach Nicolai Adam (Germany) had chalked out an extensive training schedule with exposure trips to various countries and tournament experience. They played matches in Dubai and South Africa and practiced in Germany in June and July.

eclining a stay on the disqualification of 18 rebel AIADMK MLAs, the Madras High Court this week ordered that no floor test should be held in the assembly till further orders nor can by-elections be held in those assembly constituencies. The judge, while extending the stay on a floor test, also ordered that no by-elections will be held to the seats rendered vacant by the disqualification of MLAs. On a petition filed by the DMK, the court had last week directed that no floor test will be held till Wednesday. The DMK, which had petitioned the court to order Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao to convene the assembly and ask Chief Minister K. Palaniswami to prove his majority, claimed the court’s order was a
“big victory” for the party and democracy. Party spokesman and lawyer Saravanan said it was an order arrived at with the “consent” of parties. Dushyant Dave, counsel for the 18 disqualified lawmakers, argued that the Speaker’s action was biased as no action was taken against the AIADMK MLAs who had voted against the confidence motion moved by the Chief Minister soon after assuming power earlier this year. He said the demand of the MLAs was only to change the Chief Minister and they still continue in the party.

Legendary Indian film actor and Padma Shri awardee Aparna Sen who will be in Chicago this week is looking forward to her time in the city. Ms Sen, who is synonymous with bringing Bengali cinema closer to the masses not just in India but globally too finds an artistic proximity to Chicago. She says that the architecture of the city reminds her of a studio set from a movie. Currently in the US, Sen has been having a very hectic schedule as her latest directorial venture, Sonata, is all set to be screened at film festivals in the US.
LEGENDARY ACTOR
APARNA SEN
ON HER LOVE FOR CHICAGO!
Aparna Sen is one of the few actors from India who have been able to create a unique space for them when it comes to performing arts in India. In a country where mainstream, masala, Bollywood movies seem to be both a form of obsession and obeisance, it is not always easy to bridge that gap between regional and mass cinema. Aparna Sen has been able to masterfully draw widespread attention to her work in Bengali cinema. The talented actress who lets her multilayered personality shine through by the sensitive portrayal of many characters she has played on screen also dons several hats. She is an acclaimed filmmaker, screenwriter and a versatile actor. Her exceptional work in cinema has won her the much-coveted National Film Awards for three times. Ms Sen has also won many international awards and is the proud recipient of one of the highest civilian honor in India – Padma Shri bestowed by the Indian govt. A stickler about sensitive portrayal of women on screen, Ms Sen has been known for her powerful performances beginning from the 1960s onwards. After spending many decades in the film industry, the unique quality about the roles Ms Sen plays or directs remains the honest portrayal of feminist feelings that wonderfully encapsulate the changing graph of times. A case in point is her recent directorial venture Sonata, in which she also plays one of the central characters. The movie is a fascinating contemporary
lives, the men and cosmopolitan attitude. The film casts three very dynamic actors – Aparna Sen herself, Shabana Azmi and Lillette Dubey. Talking about Sonata that will be screened at the Chicago South Asian Film Festival (Sep 29 – Oct 1) Ms Sen says that the film explores female bonding --- a subject, she feels that has not been variously explored and depicted in Indian cinema. Talking more about the movie, she says, “Sonata is a film about three friends - three close friends well into middle age. There have been many films about male bonding, especially in mainstream Indian cinema, but rarely any about female bonding.” She adds, “The film is based on a play by the well-known Maharashtrian playwright Mahesh Elkunchwar, and is essentially what is known as ‘chamber piece’ where the action is confined to a single space and time, and where the dividing line between theatre and cinema is deliberately blurred. It has a very rich interplay of moods and dramatic action, and is driven by the performance of the actors - Shabana Azmi, Lillette Dubey and myself.” The film that opened in India earlier this year, has been likened to a theatrical performance which also makes it a great choice of work to be shown on an international platform such as CSAFF celebrating alternate films. But depicting rare emotions and previously untouched topics on screen is
through her works for years. When she made her film debut at the tender age of 15 as Mrinmoyee in the 1961 film Teen Kanya directed by none other than Satyajit Ray she still convincingly played the part of a tomboyish teenager at a time when girls were only expected to be coy and demure. Later on Aparna Sen went on to act in many such powerful films but also beginning in the 1980’s even directed films that in many ways changed the shape of Indian cinema. Mrinal Sen’s Mahapritibhi won her the Best Actress Award at the Moscow Film Festival and created a cult space for herself in Bengali cinema. However she extended her artistic abilities to other languages also and was also seen in Hindi movies as well as in English films such as The Guru, Bombay Talkie and Hullabaloo over Georgie and Bonnie’s Picture released in 1978. One of the few actors who has consistently
riveted the audiences for a period spanning many decades, Ms Sen also owned the 2000s when her critically acclaimed film Antaheen released in 2009 went on to win four National Film Awards. Sen who was seen in the movie with Sharmila Tagore and Rahul Bose was much appreciated for the movie. INDIAN CINEMA, THE NEW FESTIVAL FAVORITE? For someone as seasoned as Aparna Sen, who has not only seen the many phases of Indian cinema but has also been the part of its evolution process, how does this new era of Indian indie-films being shown at film festivals across the globe appear to be. Talking about her experiences at the film festivals in the US, she says, “I have attended some South Asian film festivals in the US, yes, but not too many. I have been to the New York Indian Film Festival a few times and the Washington Indian Film Festival

and the Washington Indian Film Festival once, apart from a few others and based on my experiences there, I have certainly found a keen awareness of and interest in Indian alternative cinema.” On the growing awareness of Indian alternate, independent cinema she says, “The films of Anurag Kashyap are awaited keenly, for instance and Bengali films such as mine, Suman Mukherjee’s, Suman Ghosh’s and Kaushik Ganguli’s are often sold out.” While this interest definitely points towards an uptick in the appreciation non-mainstream cinema from India is now getting in the West, is it true that because of Hollywood and its larger than life aura, Indians both mainstream and alternate have always looked up to recognition of their arts in America? Ms Sen says, “I am not so sure about that. Mind you, I speak mainly for alternative filmmakers and producers. I really wouldn’t venture to say anything for mainstream film industry people for lack of knowledge on my part. A great number of alternative filmmakers and products are also keen on small European and UK film festivals.” CHICAGO CHARM Ms Sen who has been to Chicago twice before admits that she has a certain affinity to the place. She is particularly inspired by the cultural vibe of the city. She will be in the city next week to attend the Chicago South Asian Film Festival and is delighted about spending some time in the downtown area.
Talking about the windy city, she says,
SEN WHO HAS ALSO DIRECTED CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED FILMS SUCH AS 36 CHOWRINGEE LANE, THAT WON HER BEST DIRECTOR AWARD AT THE INDIAN NATIONAL FILM AWARDS IS LOOKING FORWARD TO THE SCREENING OF HER RECENT DIRECTORIAL FILM SONATA IN AMERICA
“I have been to Chicago twice before this, and I’ve enjoyed the city hugely both times. I particularly like the downtown area with its interesting art deco architecture, its museums and eateries.” The talented actress who also loves to preserve her memories through photographs also would love to find some time to click the pictures around the city. She is also impressed with old world charm of the city and appreciates the unique architecture – something that Chicago has earned a reputation for across the world. Talking about its buildings and design, Ms Sen says, “The architecture reminds me strangely of a studio set and I would love to explore the area more to take photographs.” However the filmmaker rues the fact that her trip to Chicago this time around is pretty short leaving her with an extremely tight schedule. She informs, “Unfortunately, I am coming for a very short visit this time - just two days - and I doubt that I will have time for anything except the events arranged by the film festival.” But given her deep aesthetic and appreciation of the city she indeed is hopeful to be back soon and enjoy some more unexplored nuances of the city known for its art, culture and entertainment space. A PROMOTER OF REGIONAL CINEMA It won’t be wrong to say that in India, given the overwhelming response that Bollywood commands many other important pieces of work are left vying for attention. Regional cinema in India has given us some of the most landmark of works but it often goes unnoticed by the masses. It has been due to the diligent efforts of artists such as Aparna Sen that a lot of regional work
has got its due. While Ms Sen appreciates the fact that regional cinema may now be getting due attention in India she is also very realistic about why it goes unnoticed. She says, “Unfortunately, such films are made on very stringent budgets most of the time, and cannot afford to spend lavishly on publicity.” On what can be done to ensure that the important works of art do not suffer for lack of mainstream attention. She says, “What is often done is that the film
I HAVE BEEN TO CHICAGO TWICE BEFORE THIS, AND I’VE ENJOYED THE CITY HUGELY BOTH TIMES. I PARTICULARLY LIKE THE DOWNTOWN AREA WITH ITS INTERESTING ART DECO ARCHITECTURE, ITS MUSEUMS AND EATERIES.” – APARNA SEN festivals show trailers of such films before other screenings and sometimes even on television. They often carry trailers and interviews of the director and actors in their communications and online newsletters, and that is very effective in creating audience awareness of such films. Seminars before and after screenings with the director and main actors participating also help raise the level of audience awareness.
APARNA SEN WILL BE IN THE CITY TO ATTEND THE 8TH EDITION OF CHICAGO SOUTH ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL AND IS APPRECIATIVE OF THE INTEREST ALTERNATE INDIAN FILMS HAVE BEEN CREATING IN THE US

The actor has been in jail since July over his alleged involvement in the conspiracy behind the case. The courts earlier rejected four bail pleas by Dileep — twice each in the trial court and the High Court. on July 10. Since then he has been languishing in the Aluva sub-jail. Earlier this week, the trial court
had rejected his bail plea. The High Court on September 25 will also hear the anticipatory
bail pleas of his actress-wife Kavya Madhavan and close friend actordirector Nadir Shah, whose names have been doing the rounds in the same case. The abduction of the actress who had worked in various Tamil and Telugu films, had taken place on February 17 when she was on her way from Thrissur to Kochi. She was taken around in her vehicle forcefully for about two hours before being dumped near actor-director Lal’s home, from where police was informed. The key accused — Pulsar Suni and his accomplices involved in the actual abduction — were arrested a week later. After detailed questioning, police unearthed a conspiracy angle that led to the actor’s arrest.
100% Kadhal: Shalini replaces Lavanya CHENNAI: Actress Shalini Pandey, who made a splash with Telugu film Arjun Reddy, will be making her Tamil acting debut with upcoming romantic-comedy 100% Shalini Pandey Kadhal, which was originally supposed to feature Lavanya Tripathi. “After the unprofessional exit of Lavanya, we’ve brought in Shalini as her replacement. We did a look test with Shalini and immediately signed her. Her persona will bring lot of energy to the character,” film’s director Chandramouli told IANS. The project was supposed to go on the floors earlier in September. “Due to Lavanya’s exit, we had to reschedule our entire shoot. We go on the floors from October 11. After a month’s shoot in India, we will head to London,” he said.

Directed by Vignesh Shivan, the film also stars Karthik, Senthil, Ramya Krishnan and Keerthy Suresh. Rumored to be the remake of Akshay Kumar’s Special 26, the film marks the maiden collaboration of Suriya and Vignesh, known for helming Poda Podi and Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. Fantastic Fest is the largest genre film festival in the US, specializing in horror, fantasy, sci-fi, action and just plain fantastic movies from all around the world. Having made his acting debut at the age of 17 with Telugu romantic drama Ninnu Choodalani, he also believes there’s no escape from what he calls the family “baggage”. “I’ve been given the opportunity to carry (forward) the legacy with which people associate me; I can’t escape it even if I don’t like it. IANS in an exclusive interview. Jr NTR is named after his grandfather, the late Nandamuri
Taraka Rama Rao — universally known as NTR. An acclaimed and hugely popular Telugu actor-film-
maker, he broke into politics and went on to become the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. “If there’s no load on you, no anchor point, we are free souls and we will be roaming around. We end up doing whatever we feel like. The baggage made me realize who I am and it has kept me grounded,” Jr NTR said. With that comes a certain image. Does it mean he can do only certain kinds of films? “I thought it restricted me to certain kinds of films. But I realized later that it didn’t, and that I was responsible for my choices. My son’s entry into my life changed the way I saw my career — and my general outlook towards life,” he added.

S
imran is a film about an unconventional, 30-plus Guajarati divorcee Praful Patel who lives with her parents in Atlanta, works in the housekeeping department of a plush hotel and lives life on her terms. Keen on buying her own property in the minority quota as it is affordable, Praful saves every dollar painstakingly, but one day in Las Vegas where she goes for her cousin Ambar’s (Aneesha Joshi) bachelorette, she blows it all up in a casino. She is in heavy debt, owing $50,000 to a money-lender who means business. One thing leads to another and soon, she is sucked into the world of crime.
Film: “Simran”; Director: Hansal Mehta; Cast: Kangana Ranaut, Sohum Shah, Rupendra Nagra and Aneesha Joshi; Rating: ***1/2
Overnight, the independent Gujju girl with chutzpah, becomes a bank robber with convivial ease.
While Kangana Ranaut as Praful Patel, slips into this avatar effortlessly, the writing belies credibility. It seems far-fetched and amateurish to digest. Director Hansal Mehta has taken oodles of cinematic liberty to create situations and trying to pass them as existent. Praful’s character, however, is a welletched one. He manages to make the lives of the Indian diaspora -
their values, struggles, fears look real. The film is racy and although the second half seems a tad long, it never really lets you stifle a yawn. Laced with abundance of humors, some straight- faced and witty dialogues, Kangana essays Praful Patel with her characteristic panache. The film is Kangana’s canvas all the way and she makes it come alive with her joie de vivre and histrionics, which seem natural coming from her. And that is what makes you overlook the flaws and keep you riveted to the screen. The scenes where she is at the casino in Las Vegas and when she breaks down after her money is stolen, are a pure treat to watch.

ctor Gautam Rode says his character in the forthcoming film Aksar 2 has several shades and so, he is nervous how the audience will react to his “bit complex” role. In the suspense thriller, Gautam, known for shows like Saraswatichandra and Maha Kumbh: Ek Rahasaya, does not play the quintessential bad guy, but he doesn’t play by the book either. “The character I play is a bit complex and there are several shades to him. I explored a character that is far from any other that I have played. That is what excited me the most when the script was narrated to me,” Gautam said in a statement.

The Dilwale actress shared her experience of being an outsider in Bollywood and spoke about the casting couch and body shaming at a length. “I am an engineer, so it was a huge shift for me. I was a little lost...It seemed like a dream which was too big. I think that such things (casting couch) do exist, but not only in Bollywood.” said Kriti Sanon. “But in other places too. But fortunately, I have not faced the casting couch. I was signed by an agency and thankfully nothing of this sort happened to me.” Sanon added.

Carbs may boost malaria vaccine SYDNEY: Offering vital clues to improving malaria vaccine, an international research team has shown that carbohydrates on the surface of malaria parasites play a critical role in their ability to infect mosquito and human hosts. The discovery, published in the journal Nature Communications, also suggests steps that may improve the only malaria vaccine approved to protect people against Plasmodium falciparum malaria — the most deadly form of the disease.
Antidepressants up risk of death: Study
The team had shown that the malaria parasite “tags” its proteins with carbohydrates in order to stabilize and transport them and that this process was crucial to completing the parasite’s life cycle. “Interfering with the parasite’s ability to attach these carbohydrates to its proteins hinders liver infection and transmission to the mosquito and weakens the parasite to the point that it cannot survive in the host,” said Justin Boddey from Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Parkville, Victoria, Australia.
Malaria infects more than 200 million people in the world every year and kills around 650,000 people, predominantly pregnant women and children. Efforts to eradicate this disease require the development of new therapeutics, in particular an effective malaria vaccine. The first malaria vaccine approved for human use — RTS,S/AS01 — got the nod of the European regulators in July 2015 but has not been as successful as hoped with a marginal efficacy that wanes over time.
World lacks antibiotics: WHO Most of the drugs currently in the clinical phase are modifications of existing classes of antibiotics and are only short-term solutions, a WHO report said IANS, GENEVA
TORONTO: Medications commonly prescribed to reduce depression and anxiety may increase the risk of death by preventing multiple organs from functioning properly, researchers have warned. The researchers reviewed studies involving hundreds of thousands of people and found that antidepressant users had a 33 per cent higher chance of death than nonusers. High BP damages organs Genetic flaw causes high insulin levels of teenagers, says research IANS, LONDON
NEW YORK: Is your teenage son or daughter suffering from high blood pressure? Beware! If left uncontrolled, the condition can lead to organ damage as in adults, according to a research. The findings showed that organ damage — damage to the heart and blood vessels — from high blood pressure does not only occur in adults, but also in teenagers. Importantly, the damage in teenagers occurs at blood pressure levels that are below the clinical definition of hypertension in the age group, the researchers said. “Some adolescents may have organ damage related to blood pressure and are not targeted for therapy,” said Elaine M. Urbina, Director at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Ohio.

esearchers have discovered how a genetic mutation may lead to excess production of insulin, a condition known as congenital hyperinsulinism, even if the patients have not eaten any carbohydrates. Since the function of insulin is to metabolize sugars, excess production of insulin leads to chronic hypoglycaemia. The brain, which devours vast quantities of energy, is perpetually undernourished. The disorder can therefore lead to serious brain damage and even death in the worst cases. In a study published in the journal Human Molecular Genetics, the researchers described the effects of a genetic mutation in cases of congenital hyperinsulinism. researcher at the University of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland. “Without intervention it can rapidly take a dramatic course,” Maechler said. * The researchers focused on a genetic mutation known to be associated with hyperinsulinism.

Sex overlap in male brains, says a study NEW YORK: Brain structures that control aggressive and sexual behavior are controlled differently in females, but they tend to overlap in males, a new study has found. Male circuits for sex and aggression were earlier traced to a distinct part of the hypothalamus, known as the ventromedial hypothalamus, or VMHvl -- located on the underside of the hypothalamus in both mice and humans. The study, conducted on mice, showed that the cells controlling these behaviors are separate in female mice, in both those that have not mated and are new mothers. —IANS

Anirban Lahiri : India’s ace golfer : Exclusive chat BY DR. NILESH MEHTA HICAGO,IL- In recent times, the name of Anirban Lahiri has been synonymous with Indian golf especially when it comes to the elite international level of competition. In his first visit to the Chicago suburbs for the BMW Championship golf tournament, hiINDiA caught up with him. As the penultimate event in the FedEx Cup, seventy top golfers converged at Conway Farms Golf Club displaying their talent to propel them to the top thirty for the TOUR Championship. One of these elite golfers of the world is Anirban Lahiri who joined the PGA tour in 2015. While he recently dodged the hurricane Irma at his Florida home where he has been living for the last eighteen months, he has been enjoying the relatively cool Chicago weather getting ready for the BMW golf event where there is no cut for the players and he will play four full days of golf.
pleased to see young kids come and see golf.”
C
Yoga and his routine: Anirban was quite vocal about his views on lifestyle. He said, “In the USA there is huge dichotomy where they are environmentally conscious related to yoga, vegan or gluten free dietary habits, trying to express more holistic ways of life with pro-environment and the other group is oblivious to these approaches. I find it very strange since it is at polar extremes. It is the other group that will gravitate to yoga and it has to happen.” “When I was in my early teens, my father introduced me to it. My father, a gynecologist in the Armed Forces, used to follow and practice B.K.S Iyengar style yoga (he was the founder of the style of yoga known as “Iyengar yoga” and was considered one of the foremost yoga teachers in the world.) I practice five to six times a week with his yoga routine. I do about 14 to 15 asanas in various positions. It used to be a sporadic practice but in the last few years, I have been quite regular with it. Natural talent and hard work: “Lot of people have natural ability without a doubt. I have been a pro for ten years. I have been playing for 18 years or so. In my experience, what I have noticed some of the most talented golfers who one would think are born to play the game are no longer playing the game. It contributes to only a certain percentage of the overall potential.
Cricketers and Golfers: Anirban has played golf several times with Kapil Dev. In the past, Anirban has been involved in a camp with some of the cricketers of Royal Challengers Bangalore. “I gave some golfing tips to Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid. He rates the South Africans amongst the most talented amongst the cricket playing bunch. I know Sachin Tendulkar is interested but I have not played with him. Kartik Murali plays golf wherever he goes and commentates.” (L-R) Golfer Anirban Lahiri & Dr Nilesh Mehta
Beyond that it comes down to guidance, effort, and perseverance. I know so many golfers who were much more talented that myself. They did not even play pro because they did not have discipline. I feel it can be a hindrance to have too much natural ability because your affinity to working hard is lower. There is lot of research. My coach Mr. Divecha in Bangalore does a lot a work on science of mind and science of learning, trying to understand the human brain with regards to long term learning. People who actually work towards acquiring skills are the people who go forward. If you are born with it and you still put the effort in the game, you will be better than others and those are the world beaters.
Your future: When asked, “where do you see yourself five years from now?” He replied, “It is a very difficult question to answer. I did not expect myself to be here five years ago. I would not want to put an image in my mind because I feel it limits me. I feel that the possibilities are limitless. When I started playing, I did not even play the game to turn professional. I always played just for how much I enjoy it. Now, I want to see if I can get better and see how good I can be. That attitude has led me to this point in my golf career. I will continue to work with that attitude.” He has a commitment to play in the PGA which he admits is the hardest tour in the world.
Sports, India, and Golf: Golf remains a game of the elite in India. When asked about the opportunities and the overall landscape of golf, he mentioned – “ I can’t see the landscape changing with regards to opportunities. It is very simple. If you have land, are you going to make buildings or a golf course? It is a difficult call. Unless one of India’s golfers goes out and wins a major or wins a Olympic medal or does something at a global level, it is difficult to get recognition for the sport in India. Unfortunately I do not see any major changes. Historically speaking, our government in India is not pro sport. Let’s just be honest about it. Intrinsically, there is no desire to grow the country in a sporting direction and that is a sad part. Cricket is definitely a religion and that is not changing. Cricket is the only profitable sport in India. It is so skewed and it is not possible for other sports to compete. What has happened in the last few years that some people are getting fed up and soccer, kabbadi, badminton leagues have come up. But, they will never ever rival cricket. And, that’s fine. I am particuraly
Who is behind your success? “It is not one person.” He clearly attributes his success to his parents. “Being the only child of Bengali parents, it was an outside the box thinking for them to allow me to play and pursue golf.” He spoke highly of is coach also. He mentioned, “my coach has played a big part in my growth. I decided to grow organically in India. I had options to come to USA earlier, but, we decided to stay in India. He also acknowledged his wife Ipsa Jamwal Lahiri has stood besides him and supported his golf. Besides the sport, Anirban and his wife are embarking on an educational endeavor geared towards kids where he wishes to encompass golf, education, and yoga. He mentioned,” too many kids miss out on their childhood and education.” His noble thought on this subject were very refreshing and he is in the planning stages. Education is very important to Anirban and his wife. He advised the young children in India to get exposure to the game and give it a try. Take a club, hit a ball and if you like it go at it again. If you enjoy, keep doing it”

Indian grad student found dead in lake
BY A STAFF WRITER CONEE, SC -- A coroner in South Carolina’s Oconee County has said that the death of a 22-year-old Indian graduate student at Clemson University was a suicide. The body of the student was found on September 4 in Lake Hartwell by fire crew members. The fire department responded to the scene around 7 am to a report of a possible drowning and recovered one body, that turned out to be the Indian student. While the student has been identified, coroner Karl Addis has refrained from releasing his identity as he awaits notification from the next of kin in India. An exam revealed that the student drowned but had no physical injuries, and Addis said it appeared that the student jumped from a railroad trestle that crosses the river. Addis deemed the death a suicide, though the county’s sheriff ’s office, university police and the state’s natural resources department continue to investigate.

Devotees throng Devon Ka Raja BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL – The 11-day Devon Ka Raja Ganesh Chaturthi was celebrated with religious fervor and was a huge success, thanks to marathon efforts of Nirmal Shewakramani supported by Regal Jewels, Hi India’s Hemant Brahmbhatt, as well as Ramesh and Uma from Resham Saris & Hindi Lovers Club. Devon Ka Raja, one of the most popular and eagerly-awaited festivals in the community, was held in the heart of the Devon Avenue during August 24-September 4. Every day, Pandit Nagendra Rao, known for his rich knowledge of Hindu religion and its elaborate rituals and ceremonies, performed different poojas like Shivling Pooja, Hanuman Pooja, Laxmi Pooja, Kubar Pooja, Satyanarayan Pooja and Shree Ganesh Pooja. Devon Ka Raja was a greatly successful event this year because of devotees’ love for Lord Ganesh and their generous contributions. But the main credit goes to Regal Jewels family with each of its members working tirelessly to see that the well-managed functions went off smoothly and the festivities were a grand success. But it was Kajal and Rahul from Regal Jewels who constantly coordinated with volunteers and community leaders to ensure faultless management at every stage. On the concluding day, pooja, bhajan, kirtan, prasadam and visarjan were held with devotees from entire Chicago and its suburbs participating in the elaborate Ganesh immersion ceremony. The centre of attraction was a welldecorated palkhi of Ganesh for which the entire Devon Ka Raja team put their best foot forward. Indeed, Regal family as well as the Devon Ka Raja team, along with sponsors and supporters, deserve praise for bringing positive energy to the business community. After all, Devon Ka Raja festivities attract countless visitors for 11 days bringing good business to all establishments on Devon Ave.
