Russia, China and Iran hackers target Oregon fires: Over 500,000 Trump and Biden, Microsoft says people flee dozens of infernos Hackers with ties to Russia, China and Iran are attempting to snoop on people and groups involved with the US 2020 presidential election, Microsoft says.
More than half a million people in the US state of Oregon are fleeing deadly wildfires that are raging across the Pacific Northwest, authorities say.
HiIndia Newsdesk The Russian hackers who breached the 2016 Democratic campaign are again involved, said the tech firm. Microsoft said it was "clear that foreign activity groups have stepped up their efforts" targeting the election. Both President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden's campaigns are in the cyber-raiders' sights. Russian hackers from the Strontium group have targeted more than 200 organisations, many of which are linked to US political parties - both Republicans and Democrats, Microsoft said in a statement. The same cyber-attackers also targeted British political parties, said Microsoft, without specifying which ones. Strontium is also known as Fancy Bear, a cyber-attack unit allegedly affiliated with Russian military intelligence, the GRU. "Similar to what we observed in 2016, Strontium is launching campaigns to
harvest people's log-in credentials or compromise their accounts, presumably to aid in intelligence gathering or disruption operations," said Tom Burt, a Microsoft vice-president in charge of customer security and trust. The firm said Chinese hackers had launched attacks targeting individuals connected to Mr Biden's campaign, while Iranian hackers had continued efforts targeting people associated with the Trump campaign. Most of the cyber-attacks had not been successful, according to Microsoft. The attacks have also not been launched on groups that handle the voting systems themselves."What we've seen is consistent with previous attack patterns that not only target candidates and campaign staffers but also those they consult on key issues," Mr Burt said. A Biden campaign official said: "We have known from the beginning of our campaign that we would be subject to such attacks and we are prepared for them."
Trump rules out extension of TikTok deadline
Trump deliberately played down virus, Woodward book says
HiIndia Newsdesk US President Donald Trump on Thursday ruled out extending the September 15 deadline for Chinese video-sharing social networking platform TikTok to either change its ownership to an American company or shut it down. In an executive order last month, Trump had set September 15 as the deadline for the Chinese app to either change its ownership to an American company or shut it down. In the initial stages, Microsoft was said to be involved in negotiations with ByteDance, the Beijingbased internet technology company which owns TikTok. “I’m not extending deadline, no. It’s September 15th. There will be no extension of the TikTok deadline,” Trump told reporters on Thursday. India was the first country to ban TikTok and more than 100 other Chinese mobile applications because of security reasons.
Bob Woodward, who broke the Watergate scandal and is one of the nation's most respected journalists, interviewed Mr Trump 18 times from December to July. Mr Trump is quoted as telling him the virus was "deadly stuff" before the first US death was confirmed. Responding, the president said he had wanted to avoid causing public panic. Some 190,000 Americans have been recorded as dying with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. On Wednesday, some US media released parts of the interviews between the president and the journalist, revealing his reported remarks on the outbreak as well as on race and other issues. Here are some of the key quotes so far from Rage, which will be released on 15 September. Mr Trump indicated that he knew more about the severity of the illness than he had said publicly. According to a tape of the call,

Fanned by unusually hot, dry winds, dozens of infernos are sweeping the state, and at least one is being treated as suspected arson. Governor Kate Brown said the exact number of fatalities is not yet known, though at least four are confirmed. More than 100 wildfires are currently scorching 12 western US states. Oregon, California and Washington have borne the brunt of the wildfires, which have in several cases destroyed entire towns. In California alone, at least 10 deaths have been confirmed. US President Donald Trump knew Covid-19 was deadlier than the flu before it hit the country but wanted to play down the crisis, according to a new book.
Mr Trump told Woodward in Febr uar y that the coronavirus was deadlier than the flu. "It goes through the air," Mr Trump told the author on 7 February. "That's always tougher than the touch. You don't have to touch things. Right? But the air, you just breathe the air and that's how it's passed. "And so that's a very tricky one. That's a very delicate one. It's also more deadly than even your strenuous flus." Later that month, Mr Trump promised the virus was "very much under control", and that the case count would soon be close to zero. He also publicly implied the flu was more dangerous than Covid-19. Speaking on Capitol Hill on 10 March, Mr Trump said: "Just stay calm. It will go away."
Office of Emergency Management confirmed the latest evacuation figures, which amount to more than 10% of the state's 4.2 million population. Rich Tyler, a spokesman for the Oregon State Fire Marshal's office, told : "When you have a fire that burns through homes and businesses, you have open gas lines that are still spewing out natural gas, and those are burning." Governor Brown, a Democrat, said in a news conference: "We have never seen this amount of uncontained fire across the state... This will not be a one-time event. Unfortunately, it is the bellwether of the future. We're feeling the acute impacts of climate change."

"Massing Of Chinese Troops" A Strong Concern, India Tells China: Sources The immediate task, "to prevent any untoward incident in the future", is "to ensure a comprehensive disengagement of troops in all the friction areas," India told China, sources said
HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: Actor Kangana Ranaut, in her fight against Maharashtra's ruling Shiv Sena, today targeted Sonia Gandhi, whose Congress party is part of the Sena-led coalition government. "History will judge your silence and indifference," she told the Congress president, calling the demolition at her office on Wednesday an act of "harassment" by the state government. "Dear respected honourable Congress president Sonia Gandhi ji, being a woman aren't you anguished by the treatment I am given by your government in Maharashtra? Can you not request your government to uphold the principles of the constitution given to us by Dr. Ambedkar," Kangana Ranaut said in tweets. "You have grown up in the west and lived here in India. You may be aware of the struggles of women. History will judge your silence and indifference when your own government is harassing women and ensuring a total mockery of law and order. I hope you will intervene," said the 33-year-old actor.

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Moscow on Thursday.
HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: India highlighted its "strong concern at the massing of Chinese troops with equipment along the Line of Actual Control (LAC)", the de facto border between the two countries, at the meeting between Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Moscow on Thursday evening, sources have said. "The provocative behavior of Chinese frontline troops at numerous incidents of friction along the LAC also showed disregard for bilateral agreements and protocols," Beijing was told. According to China, Wang told Mr Jaishankar that the "imperative is to immediately stop provocations such as firing and other dangerous actions that
violate the commitments made by the two sides" Indian troops "scrupulously followed all agreements and protocols," the Foreign Ministry told Beijing at the meeting that lasted for nearly two hours, sources said adding: "The presence of such large concentration of (Chinese) troops was not in accordance with the 1993 and 1996 agreements and created flash points along the LAC. The Chinese side has not provided a credible explanation for this deployment." The immediate task, "to prevent any untoward incident in the future", is "to ensure a comprehensive disengagement of troops in all the friction areas," India told China, sources said, as New Delhi stressed that an "urgent resolution of the current situation was in the interest of both nations".
Amazon eyes foothold Rafale message to ‘those who raised eye’ in RIL Retail The e-commerce giant could invest around $20 billion in Ambani’s retail business
HiIndia Newsdesk Retail industry rivals Mukesh Ambani and Jeff Bezos could bake the bread together in India with Bezos’s Amazon reportedly eyeing a slice of Ambani’s Reliance Retail Ventures, which has started selling a part of the equity to global investors. Bloomberg on Thursday said Amazon.com Inc was in discussions with Reliance Industries Limited to invest around $20 billion in Ambani’s retail business. RIL could even sell as much as a 40 per cent stake in Reliance Retail Ventures to Amazon. Though the buzz of Amazon investing in the retail arm of RIL has been doing the rounds the past couple of months, a stake sale of such a magnitude should come as a surprise.
Defence minister Rajnath Singh complimented the IAF for the quick deployment along the LAC during the border dispute with China
HiIndia Newsdesk Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday called the formal induction of five Rafale fighters jets into the Indian Air Force a “game changer” and asserted that it was an important step in the light of the prevailing security situation that “has been created along India’s border”. “It sends a strong message to the world and specially to those who have dared to raise an eye at us. This induction is a game changer in the light of the prevailing situation that has been created at the border,” Rajnath said while referring to the ongoing border tensions with China but not naming the neighbour.
Covid tip-of-iceberg findings
India by early May already had over 6.4 million people infected with the new coronavirus, the national health research agency said on Thursday, estimating an epidemic size about 100-fold higher than counted through lab-confirmed cases. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), releasing detailed findings of the first nationwide household survey for the coronavirus, has estimated that for every labconfirmed diagnosed case, India has 82 to 130 undocumented coronavirus infections, depending on the location.
'Anti-Hindu': BJP's Bengal weapon
The fig leaf has been dropped. “AntiHindu” has become the weapon of choice for the BJP in its quest to capture Bengal. BJP national president J.P. Nadda on Thursday told the Bengal party leadership to highlight chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s “anti-Hindu approach”. “Mamatadi announced a lockdown on August 5 when the foundation stone for the Ram Mandir was laid (in Ayodhya).… However, she lifted the lockdown on the day of Bakrid. This proves her anti-Hindu approach,” Nadda told the BJP’s newly constituted Bengal state committee during an online meeting.
Spacecraft named after Kalpana Chawla
An American commercial cargo spacecraft bound for the International Space Station has been named after Nasa astronaut Kalpana Chawla, the first India-born woman to enter space, for her key contributions to human spaceflight. Northrop Grumman, an American global aerospace and defence technology company, announced that its next Cygnus capsule will be named the “SS Kalpana Chawla”, in memory of the mission specialist who died with her six crewmates aboard the space shuttle Columbia in 2003. “Today we honour Kalpana Chawla, who made history at Nasa as the first female astronaut of Indian descent. Her contributions to human spaceflight have had a lasting impact,” the company tweeted on Wednesday.

Most expat women employed in Oman government sector are Indians
HiIndia Newsdesk Dubai : Indian women have topped the list of number of expatriate females working in the government sector in Oman, according to an official data. According to the 2020 Statistical Yearbook data from National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) Oman, the number of Indian women employed in the government sector topped the list with 4,604 followed by 3,090 Egyptian women for
the year 2019, the Gulf News reported. According to the data, Indian women comprised 37 per cent of the total Indian workforce employed in the government sector in 2019. Even though the numbers may seem miniscule in comparison to the total number of Omani women employed in the government sector, which is 83,175, it carries weight in the context of expatriates working in government offices, the daily said. Sudanese women were third on this list, and non-Omani Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) women were the fewest, with only 36 employed in the public sector in Oman. Nationalities that figure in the list of workforce in the government sector apart from Omanis are Indians, Bangladeshis, Pakistanis, Egyptians, Sudanese, Jordanians, other Arabs, GCC and other nationalities. In the private sector there are additional nationalities like Filipinos, Ugandans, Sri Lankans, Nepalese and Tanzanians.

Sikhs being counted as separate 'ethno-religious' group in US census
HiIndia Newsdesk New York: In a break from the US constitutional separation of state and religion, the administration of President Donald Trump has introduced Sikhs as a distinctive group to be counted in the ongoing census and not as Asian Indians. Census Bureau officials said they consider Sikhism a "cultural" or an "ethno-religious" identity. Sikhism does not appear as a category to tick off on the census forms that US residents are legally required to
fill out, but Sikhs can tick off the "Other Asian" category and write in their religion as a sub-category instead of listing themselves under Asian Indian or other listed racial and ethnic identities, according to the Census Bureau. But while anyone can write-in any religious or ethnic or linguistic identities beyond the categories that appear on the form, only Sikhs and some others are given a code that will allow them to be tabulated separately when the 2020 reports are made. "'Sikh' will be included as a distinct detailed population group within the 'Asian' racial category, and not classified as 'Asian Indian' as it was in the 2010 Census when it was viewed as a religious response," according to the Census Bureau.

David Frost (left) and Michel Barnier (right) will meet for trade talks again next week
HiIndia Newsdesk The EU has threatened the UK government with legal action if it does not ditch its controversial Internal Market Bill by the end of the month. Angered Tory backbench MPs have launched a bid to amend the new law. Meanwhile, trade talk negotiators on both sides have acknowledged they are still clashing on "significant" issues. Boris Johnson's proposed Internal Market
Bill, which will be formally debated by MPs in the House of Commons for the first time on Monday, addresses the Northern Ireland Protocol - an element of the Brexit withdrawal agreement designed to prevent a hard border returning to the island of Ireland. The new law would give UK ministers powers to modify or "disapply" rules relating to the movement of goods that will come into force from 1 January, if the UK and EU are unable to strike a trade deal.

She posted a picture of herself sitting in a restaurant four hours before going to the museum with a friend, describing how first one official then another stared at her breasts but did not say which rule she was contravening.

HiIndia Newsdesk Artist Delphine Boël, 52, has taken her case to the appeals court in Brussels. King Albert finally admitted he was Ms Boël's father in January this year, having fought her paternity claim for more than a decade. Her mother, Baroness Sybille de Selys Longchamps, claims she had an 18year affair with Albert before he was king. Rumours of an illegitimate child first emerged in 1999 in an unauthorised biography about Albert's wife Queen Paola, prompting a royal scandal and enduring media gossip in Belgium. Ms Boël first alleged on the record that King Albert was her biological father during a 2005 interview, but it was not until he abdicated in 2013 - when he lost his immunity to prosecution - that she opened court proceedings.
HiIndia Newsdesk The blaze broke out where an aid agency had been storing food and cooking oil. Firefighters and military officials spent hours battling the fire, using helicopters to drop water on it, before getting it under control on Thursday. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is not yet known. Footage shared on social media showed port workers running away as the fire broke out at the duty-free zone in the port on Thursday. The blaze sent a plume of dark smoke over the Lebanese capital. The head of Lebanon's Red Cross, George Kettaneh, said some people were suffering from shortness of breath, but there were no reports of injuries.
Red Cross Regional Director Fabrizio Carboni said the warehouse stocked thousands of food parcels. He added that the humanitarian operation is at risk of serious disruption. The area around the fire was cordoned off to prevent it from spreading. Civil defence director general Raymond Khattar told the state-run National News Agency that those working to extinguish the fire would not leave "until the flames are fully quenched." By the evening, officials said most flames had been extinguished. The fire broke out just over a month after a huge explosion in the Lebanese capital, which was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate detonating at a warehouse in the port.
HiIndia Newsdesk Thirty bare-chested women locked themselves to the railings outside Britain’s Houses of Parliament on Thursday in an Extinction Rebellion protest to demand action against climate change. The women carried a large banner reading “Can’t bare the truth?” and had words painted on their chests representing predicted consequences of global warming such as war, drought, starvation, wildfires, violence, and famine. Some of the women used metal D-locks normally used to lock up bicycles to attach themselves by the neck to the parliamentary estate’s railings. The women called on the government to inform the public about the risks of allowing average global temperatures to rise by 4 degrees centigrade, which Extinction Rebellion says is what will happen by 2100 unless countries take action now.

So what has changed this season? “Disconnecting with things that have happened in the past and not taking that baggage, as we have done that way too many times,” he said, adding: “Just because we have a bunch of players that are so skilled, that is the reason why they have had so much expectation (from us).”

M
umbai Indians will begin their title defence against last year’s runners-up Chennai Super Kings in the opening match of the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League in Abu Dhabi on September 19. The IPL governing council finally announced the schedule on Sunday afternoon, after days of dithering, almost two weeks ahead of the scheduled start. That the governing council would retain the traditional IPL opener featuring two teams from last year’s final. The schedule includes only the matches for the roundrobin phase of the tournament. The evening games will begin at 7.30pm (IST) and include 10 double-headers with the afternoon ties starting at 3.30pm (IST). The double-headers have been slotted from next month when the temperatures are expected to come down in the region.
Novak Djokovic was kicked out of the US Open for accidentally hitting a line judge in the throat with a tennis ball after dropping a game in his fourth-round match Sunday, a stunning end to his 29-match winning streak and bid for an 18th Grand Slam title. As he walked to the Arthur Ashe Stadium sideline for a changeover, trailing Pablo Carreño Busta 6-5 in the first set, Djokovic — who was seeded and ranked No. 1 and an overwhelming favorite for the championship — angrily smacked a ball behind him. The ball flew right at the line judge, who dropped to her knees at the back of the court and reached for her neck. During a discussion of about 10 minutes near the net involving tournament referee Soeren Friemel, Grand Slam supervisor Andreas Egli and chair umpire Aurelie Tourte, Djokovic pleaded his case. “His point was that he didn’t hit the line umpire intentionally. He said, ‘Yes, I was angry. I hit the ball. I hit the line umpire. The facts are very clear. But it wasn’t my intent. I didn’t do it on purpose.’ So he said he shouldn’t be defaulted for it,” said Friemel, who made the decision to end the match. “And we all agree that he didn’t do it on purpose, but the facts are still that he hit the line umpire and the line umpire was clearly hurt.”
Novak Djokovic had lost a game to his opponent, Pablo Carreno Busta, to fall behind 6-5 in the first set.

The 'Queen' actor took to Twitter to share the message hours after thanking Home Minister Amit Shah for providing her with 'Y' level security as she said that she feels unsafe. "Movie Mafia today you might break my face n my house using your powerful friends," she tweeted. "It will give you momentary happiness but if you are clever you will know my end is my beginning. You will end me here I will rise somewhere else ... Trust me it will hurt you even more," she added. Days after Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut said she felt unsafe in Mumbai after the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, the Central government has approved 'Y' level security for the actor, sources said on Monday.

Veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha talks about Rhea Chakraborty, the trial by the media, and how one should wait for the judicial system to decide whether she's guilty or not.Ever since the unfortunate demise of Sushant Singh Rajput, there have been a lot of interrogations and investigations in the last two months. The Mumbai Police interrogated several filmmakers and actors who worked with the actor and close to him, and the Centeal Bureau of Investigation stepped in after the Supreme Court probed an inquiry in their verdict. Rhea Chakraborty, who was Rajput's girlfriend, is currently being interrogated by the NCB (Narcotics Control Bureau) and talking about the actress and the media trial that has happened, veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha has spoken. the actor said, "I don't know the girl. But I do know that she was close to Sushant Singh Rajput. I want to ask Sushant's fans: do you think he would be pleased with the treatment being given to her?" He added, " And by trial I don't mean trial by media. There is a trusted and respected judicial system in India. Let them decide whether she's guilty or not.

Last month, Sanjay Dutt announced that he was taking a break from work to address his health concerns. In the weeks following his stage three lung cancer diagnosis, the actor has often been spotted outside Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri, where he is currently seeking treatment. However, on Sunday afternoon, he stepped out of his Bandra residence, ready to head to a different destination — Yash Raj Studios in Andheri. mid-day has learnt that the actor filmed his portions of Karan Malhotra's Shamshera over two days, marking his first shoot since the illness. "Ranbir Kapoor had finished shooting his scenes last month. Sanjay sir had two days' patchwork shoot left before Karan could call it a wrap on the dacoit drama. Producer Aditya Chopra had requested the actor to take his time before returning to the set," reveals a trade source. Given the actor's frail health, the producer personally ensured that the shoot was conducted with minimal crew and in adherence with the strictest safety measures. "Everyone involved had to undergo a COVID test before s/he joined the senior actor on the floor," adds the source.

The cine icon, who has started shooting for "Kaun Banega Crorepati" season 12, also spoke of changing scenario on the sets. "When the work beckons in the early morrow .. the change shall be on test .. and the wonder then of how it shall eventually turn out .. each day has its illusions expectations and formats of inventive creation .. one such shall be on test .. and the night after its done shall be spent on its assessment and the hope of some visuals that shall justify I hope the environ," he wrote.
He continued: "There is a hesitancy in all about for all that has to be undertaken .. among all .. and the fear of the ultimate problem .. of an infection .. lies way ahead in all .. Happy with the response to her acting debut, designer Masaba Gupta says eponymous series tackles gender bias, body shaming despite breezy treatment acting test because I had the common sense to not get over-ambitious. With this show, I wanted to shatter the idea that designers faff in the name of work. People told me they didn't know fashion requires work. Secondly, it's necessary to humanise celebrities; they have their own hardships. The show depicts the unfortunate fact that women, no matter how successful, aren't taken seriously."

It is not the kind of narrative you see often : Abhay Deol on JL50 Abhay Deol on his latest web series JL50, and why he thinks that despite having the capacity to appreciate art in a nuanced manner, Indian content creators believe that "our audience is dumb." Q. What excited you about JL50? Science fiction is a genre I love. This was not the kind of science fiction with big production scale, guns and lasers. This is high concept and high drama. It goes back in time, and is not the kind of narrative you see often. I liked the way it came together, the way it progressed and the journey of my character. So, when you don’t have spaceships, lasers and guns, you have the story. And, this supported the interest. Especially when you travel through time, it needs to come together with some amount of intelligence, which certainly this script had. Q. You completed shooting for JL50 in 2019. Why did it take so long to release? Well, that’s a question for the producers. But honestly, it’s part of the process. This is not just about JL50, but for anything remotely like JL50 and by that I mean, which does not follow the formula, has new filmmakers involved and is not supported by the mainstream. The going is always tough. I’ve worked more with debut directors in my career and I’ve realised that when you’re working with people who not just have ideas that are new but also don’t have a body of work behind them, it’s going to be tough to distribute their work. I have realised that the ones with the gutsy, ballsy ideas are the ones who are new because they have nothing to lose. So, I believe that’s a much nicer deal. I risk myself and my career despite knowing my stuff won’t get released on time perhaps. But when people eventually see it, they will see that it’s an attempt at something different. And that process is what JL50 has gone through.

Always be mindful about your posture, because every yoga asana focuses on the form That yoga is important is a known fact. But what are the rules to follow for people who are starting to do yoga at home? Well, there are no rules per se, just some things that you ought to be mindful of, so that your fitness journey becomes as effective as it can be * Have a slow beginning. You do not have to jump right into it. While there can be many online videos out there to overwhelm you, remember that only you know and understand your body. Just start with a simple basic asana and work your way up. Also you do not have to dedicate a lot of time every day; just aside a few minutes. * Always be mindful about your posture, because every yoga asana focuses on the form. The entire process can be counter-productive if you do not keep the correct posture. You can always ask an online teacher about what kind of
form to take, or cause pause videos to understand exactly how you can bend your body. * Do not worry too much about your workout clothes; just wear something that is both comfortable and stretchy. Ideally, you must keep aside a pair of pants for yoga, which will enable movement. Do not wear too many accessories that can restrict your form. * Always listen to your body and never go against it. Don’t force your body into doing anything — the process of mastering an asana is always gradual. If you feel your body is not behaving, take some rest and then begin again.
Ingredients
1 1/2 cup – Green moong whole, soaked and boiled 1/2 cup – Oats powder 1 – Potato of medium size, boiled and grated 1 – Onion of medium size, finely chopped 1 tsp – Red chilli powder Salt to taste 1/2 tsp – Chaat masala 1 – Green chillies, finely chopped 1 tbsp – Coriander leaves, chopped Oil as required
Method
* In a plate, add the boiled green moong. Now mash it. * Once mashed, add oats powder, followed by boiled potato and chopped onion. * Add red chilli powder, salt and chaat masala. Mix all the ingredients well. * Add the green chillies and coriander leaves. Mix again * Take a portion of the mixture on your palm and shape into a small flat ball. Repeat with the rest of the mixture. * In a pan, heat oil for frying. Now place the tikkis one after another on the pan and fry on both sides till they turn golden brown. Serve.

s the name suggests, this Samsung TV has been made to resemble a frame. So while it can still go on a stand, the ideal scenario is to hang this television like a frame on a wall, but in such a way that it can be useful as a TV too. However, I have a feeling there will be those who will buy this primarily for use as a frame, and I don’t mean just art galleries. Because it is meant to be hung like a picture frame, it has the same thickness all across and a frame too that runs across the front bezels to the sides. This also means The Frame is not as thin as some of the televisions we have

For instance, what happens to the wires that go behind, if at all you want to use this as a proper television also. Samsung’s solution is an integrated unit with ports for all the content sources as well as the power cable, which then connects to the TV with a single cable. This box can be kept a few feet away from the TV itself so that it can maintain its gapless mounting. Quite innovative. The Frame also comes with some unique and interesting features. To start with, this can double up as a PC of sorts when you log in to your Windows365 account on the TV and start using MS Word, Excel and other such products — you will need a Bluetooth keyboard though. In our work from home lives, this is a good way to ensure there is no respite from office. You can also do a split-screen view on The Frame and watch two things at the same time. This is also a good testament to the processing power of this television

osing weight could prevent or even reverse diabetes, according to late-breaking research. The research was presented on Monday at ESC Congress 2020. In 2019, approximately 463 million people worldwide had diabetes, of which the vast majority (around 90 per cent) type 2 diabetes. Diabetes doubles the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and death from cardiovascular disease. Obesity is the main modifiable cause of type 2 diabetes, while genetic make-up may also identify individuals with a greater likelihood of developing the condition. “Because we are born with our genes, it might be possible to pinpoint early in life who has a high chance of developing diabetes during their lifetime,” said principal investigator Professor Brian Ference of the University of Cambridge, UK, and the University of Milan, Italy. “We conducted this study to find out if combining inherited risk with current body mass index (BMI) could identify people at the highest risk of developing diabetes. Prevention efforts could then concentrate on these individuals.” The study included 445,765 participants of the UK Biobank. The average age was 57.2 years and 54 per cent were women. Inherited risk of diabetes was assessed using

Losing Weight could prevent or even reverse diabetes
The findings indicate that most cases of diabetes could be avoided by keeping BMI below the cut-off which triggers abnormal blood sugar. This means that to prevent diabetes, both BMI and blood sugar should be assessed regularly. Efforts to lose weight are critical when a person starts to develop blood sugar problems.” Few things boost our emotional wellbeing like gardening does. Here the engagement is proactive; you are the caregiver, the nurturer — you sow, cut, prune, spray, dig, arrange, scoop out, flatten, mix, and uproot — it’s an endless and a most rewarding process. Plants have a way of giving back, as those in the know would say; you feel blessed and heal yourself in the process.
S
Planter’s pleasure Tofu: Tofu is the vegan version of cottage cheese or ‘paneer’. It serves as
a direct substitute for these dairy products in all recipes. Even though it does not taste exactly like ‘paneer’, there are various dishes that go well with tofu and as it is a great source of protein, tofu can be the ideal addition to your vegan diet. Flaxseeds: Flaxseeds are rich in proteins, fibre, and omega-3 fatty acids. They can serve as a filling mid-meal snack, anytime of the day. Not only will these keep hunger at bay, it also provides the body with some much-needed protein. Each 100 grams of Flaxseeds contain a whopping 18 grams of protein. Whether you want to have them as a snack, add them to a smoothie, or as a dessert item, the choice is yours. Lentils: Lentils too are commonly known for their high protein content. Considering the Indian diet that has ‘dal-chawal’ as the basic lunch meal, you can get your protein intake there. There is a variety of lentils that you can choose from, depending upon your preference. They taste good and also help in satiating hunger. Beans: If you are looking for something a little more special in your vegan diet aside from lentils, beans are a good place to start. From black beans, kidney beans, and chickpeas you can boil them to add to your salads, cook them to make delicious gravy or even make hummus. These beans will provide you with a healthy and filling meal, leaving no room for hunger. And if you are a new vegan who has recently given up meat, ‘Rajma’ with gravy is often quite similar in taste to chicken curry, which will certainly help you maintain your diet.
everal scientific trials have revealed the beneficial effects on mood and mental health of even simply observing nature. In a Japanese study, viewing plants altered EEG recordings and reduced stress, fear, anger and sadness, as well as blood pressure, pulse rate and muscle tension. A later Japanese study found that it was more beneficial physiologically to view a green hedge rather than a concrete fence. A pioneering randomised study by the environmental psychologist Roger Ulrich in the 1980s found that views of plants and trees from post-operative wards improved the mood of patients and reduced analgesic use, surgical complications and length of stay. A friend wrote to me recently as she watched her potted plants sway with the rains, “It’s impossible to tell which is making me more ecstatic — the

They were also divided into five groups according to BMI. Participants were followed-up until an average age of 65.2 years. During that period, 31,298 developed type 2 diabetes. Those in the highest BMI group (average 34.5 kg/m2) had an 11-fold increased risk of diabetes compared to participants in the lowest BMI group (average 21.7 kg/m2). The highest BMI group had a greater likelihood of developing diabetes than all other BMI groups, regardless of genetic risk. “The findings indicate that BMI is a much more powerful risk factor for diabetes that genetic predisposition,” said Professor Ference. when people cross a certain BMI threshold, their chances of diabetes go up and stay at that same high-risk level regardless of how long they are overweight.” This means that to prevent diabetes, both BMI and blood sugar should be assessed regularly. Efforts to lose weight are critical when a person starts to develop blood sugar problems.” “It may also be possible to reverse diabetes by losing weight in the early stages before permanent damage occurs,” said Professor Ference rolling thunder and blowing sheets or the frenzied dance before my eyes. My babies have put up quite a show, moving in tandem in their finery, spectacular and synchronised, and drawing into that universe my immediate and distant worlds... I wonder if I ever had an individual existence.” What she was experiencing was sheer rapture from immersing herself in the world of plants. The delights we derive manifests in a myriad of ways, some of which we may not even be conscious about. “Every person has a need to be nurtured, but it isn’t always possible to have an external nurturer,” explains Baksi. “This is especially true in these times of lockdown. The expectation to be nurtured is often not a realistic or mature one. One way of overcoming this is through self-care.” Perhaps a more significant means through which one fulfils this need, as Baksi stresses, is by nurturing others. And what better way than caring for plants? “You seem to get a vicarious pleasure of being nurtured by nurturing another,” she says. Social media is replete with posts showing people taking a more active interest in things green. Behind all those photographs of blooming bougainvilleas, showy hibiscuses and sharplooking chillies are stories of an improved state of mind — or at least a desire to work towards it — and healthier blood pressure, heart rate, stress hormone levels and so on. “Working with soil takes care of a lot of pent up stress and even aggression,” says Baksi.
5 protein sources to supplement your vegan diet
As vegans forsake the consumption of all animal-based products, it is important for them to find their share of protein and othe r nut r i e nt s through other sources. Edamame: Edamame is a green vegetable that has soybeans in its pods. It is very similar in looks to peas in a pod. It is a popular delicacy in Asia and Japanese and the simplest way to consume it is to boil it and add some salt. You can choose from a variety of spices to add to it as well. Edamame also contains high levels of protein which help the overall development of the body.

and they excel at pinpointing shipments that are worthy of a closer look.” The shipment was referred to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) Office of Law Enforcement, where scientists presumptively identified the primate as an endangered lorisid that is protected under CITES Appendix I. The turtle bones were identified as soft-shelled turtles that were potentially CITES listed as well. “U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service inspectors,
along with Customs and Border Protection, continue to produce excellent results by impacting the illegal wildlife trade,” said Supervisory Wildlife Inspector Denise Larison. “Wildlife trafficking remains a significant threat to thousands of plant and animal species around globe. Thanks to this great partnership, we were once again able to prevent the unlawful importation of protected species and disrupt the illegal market for these precious animals.” CBP agriculture specialists inspect plant and animal products imported into the United States to prevent the transmission of foreign pests and diseases to American agriculture commodities. Indian American Youngster Creates Sensor for Social Distancing with Help from ‘Girls with Impact’ BY A STAFF WRITER MECHANICSBURG, PA- An Indian American youngster in Pennsylvania is taking social distancing seriously, and as such has created a wearable social distancing sensor. As per report Neha Shukla created a device that lets people know if someone comes within a 6-feet range. Shukla, from Mechanicsburg, created a social distancing device that looks like a cap, with the help of Girls with Impact, an online entrepreneurship training academy, designed specifically for girls, the report said. “They move through all the components of the business plan, and at the end they

Endangered Primate Remains Found in Cincinnati Shipment CBP NEWS RELEASE CINCINNATI, OH—In early April, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agriculture specialists in Cincinnati were inspecting several large bags of dried chili peppers imported from Thailand when they noticed something strange about the contents of the shipment.Primate Taking a closer look, the specialists found multiple prohibited wildlife products, including numerous dried frogs and insects and the remains of an endangered primate. The shipment was addressed to someone in Buffalo, New York. In a separate Thailand shipment, specialists found more than 22 pounds of turtle bones. “Our agriculture specialists work to protect our U.S. crops and food supply each and every day,” said Cincinnati Supervisory Agriculture Specialist Barbara Hassan. “Often, we encounter shipments like these, which are of interest not only to CBP but to other federal agencies as well. years old and I just thought of this and I just did it. You really have to identify the problem and you really have to care enough about it,” Shukla said in the report. In fact, the age of those closest to her was the reason she created SixFeetApart, the report added. Her creation: a wearable motion sensor that buzzes to let you know if someone has come within six feet. “This is a micro-processor with a program that I coded myself to convert raw data into distance readings that can be understood by us, as 6 feet or less,” added Shukla. She said it distinguishes between people and objects pretty well, according to the report.
BY A STAFF WRITER HANOVER, NH- Dartmouth College Aug. 18 announced that Prachee Avasthi, an associate professor of biochemistry and cell biology at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine and one of the medical school’s newest faculty members, has received the 2020 Women in Cell Biology Junior Award for Excellence in Research from the American Society for Cell Biology. The prestigious award is given each year “to a woman in an early stage of her career who is making exceptional scientific contributions to cell biology, is developing a strong independent research program, and exhibits the potential for continuing at a high level of scientific endeavor and leadership,” the report notes. Established in 1961, the ASCB is an inclusive, international community of biologists studying the cell as the fundamental unit of life. Now with more than 9,000 members worldwide, the organization is dedicated to advancing scientific discovery, advocating sound research policies, improving education, promoting professional development, and increasing diversity in the scientific workforce. More than 30 past or current ASCB members have won Nobel Prizes in medicine or chemistry. The Avasthi Lab studies how complex cytoskeletal components are built and regulated within cells, using Chlamydomonas (green algae) as a model system to discover new biology shared with human cells to improve human disease, according to the Dartmouth report. During the highly competitive selection process, the Women in Cell Biology Awards Committee found Avasthi’s early-career accomplishments to be “exceptional,” both as a researcher and a leader, it said. “Dr. Avasthi literally has created a new area in cell biology through her discovery and pursuit of actin’s role in flagella/cilia assembly in Chlamydomonas,” Mary Munson, who chairs the ASCB’s WICB Committee, said in the report. “She is also well known as the founder of @NewPI_ Slack, an amazing group that provides support, mentorship, networking, and career development for more than 2,000 members worldwide, dozens of whom signed one of the nomination letters—I think this was a first for WICB.” Avasthi completed her post-doctoral fellowship in biochemistry and biophysics at the University of California San Francisco in 2015, her Ph.D. in neuroscience at the University of Utah in 2009, and her Bachelor of Science in molecular and integrative physiology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2000.

State Sen. Villivalam: Completing the Census Crucial for Illinois’ Fastest Growing Demographic
BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO – State Senator Ram Villivalam (D-Chicago) is strongly encouraging all Asian Americans to fill out the census before the deadline closes. “We need to ensure Asian Americans have access to all of the same state services as other Illinois residents,” said Villivalam, the first Asian American elected to the Illinois Senate and the Co-Chair of the Illinois General Assembly’s Asian American Caucus. “I represent one of the most culturally diverse districts in the state. I am extremely grateful for the numerous contributions our Asian American neighbors, friends and family have brought to our community – everything from cultural to the culinary traditions.” According to the Census Bureau, Asian Americans from countries like India and China are the fastest growing demographic group in Illinois with a population that has increased by 24% since 2010. Asian Americans now account for 5.7% of the people in the state. The fact that Asian Americans are the fastest growing group in Illinois is a reminder of how important it is to fill out the census. “If the Asian American community wants to have the representation it deserves in government and its fair share of federal resources, we all need to fill out the census,” Villivalam said. Namaste India Expands Museum’s Nationally Traveling Exhibit Series BY A STAFF WRITER ST LOUIS, MO- In a time of limited travel, The Magic House has continued to take families from across the country on trips around the world by way of developing culturally immersive nationally-traveling exhibits, created on site at The Magic House. This week their most recent exhibit, Argentina’s Niños, is heading to Naples, Florida after being on display in The Magic House’s World Traveler Gallery since November 2019. Kenya’s Kids is returning to The Magic House on September 5 from Chattanooga, Tennessee where it has inspired children and families at the Creative Discovery Museum since early 2020. While previous exhibits have featured the cultures of China, Kenya and most recently Argentina, The Magic House is proud to announce development of a new exhibit focusing on Indian culture. Namaste India will join the Museum’s nationally traveling cultural exhibit series when it opens in May 2021. The goal of the series is to build interest and empathy for diverse cultures from around the world with a strong local connection. The interactive exhibits transport children to authentic environments familiar in
their own lives such as a school, home, market and means of transportation. Children are able to appreciate the similarities and unique differences of the lives of children in other parts of the world. The exhibits are designed for children ages 3 to 12 years and their families. Like the other exhibits in the series, Namaste India will be designed to provide a passport to the world for all children to experience the Indian culture firsthand, even if they may never have the opportunity to travel outside of their own community. “For children growing up in an interconnected global society, it is imperative that they have exposure to develop appreciation for diverse cultures,” said Beth Fitzgerald, President of The Magic House. “Our world traveler series not only helps us to introduce new cultures to children in the United States, but it
invites families to truly celebrate the diversity of our world!” To assure authenticity and cultural accuracy, all exhibits have been created in partnership with St. Louis cultural organizations such as the Argentine Society of St. Louis, the St. Louis Chinese Culture Center and Vitendo4Africa and advisory committees made up of representatives from each culture. Namaste India will likewise be created in partnership with the St. Louis Indian community. The Magic House has formed the Namaste India advisory committee, made up of 32 professionals from around the St. Louis area, all of Indian heritage. Formed with input from the St. Louis Mosaic Project, the committee plays a critical role in the exhibit creation process. “We are so grateful for the dedication and leadership of our Namaste India advisory council and their willingness to share their rich culture with the St. Louis community and beyond. We believe that our role as exhibit developers is to be good listeners and bring to life the key cultural aspects that the committee wants to explore and celebrate,” said Fitzgerald. “We hope that this new exhibit will encourage global awareness and cultural appreciation and
showcase the beauty, diversity and vibrancy of India,” said Mahendra Gupta, member of the Magic House Namaste India advisory committee and Former Dean and Virgil Professor, Olin Business School, Washington University. “We are excited to bring new traditions and experiences to St. Louis families, as doorways to new languages, celebrations and traditions.” The Magic House’s cultural exhibit series not only provides a unique learning opportunity to children and families in St. Louis, but also throughout the United States. The new exhibit will tour the country as a part of the Museum’s nationally traveling exhibit rental program, visiting other children’s museums, history museums and more following its debut at The Magic House. Having just closed Argentina’s Niños on August 23, the Museum will reopen Kenya’s Kids on Saturday, September 5 with the hopes of debuting Namaste India in spring of 2021. The Magic House is actively fundraising in support of the development and creation of the exhibit. If interested in supporting this effort, donors are invited to contact The Magic House at development@magichouse.org or donate online at https://www.magichouse.org/namasteindia/.
