Jindal treads in Trump’s footsteps
Low-polling Bobby Jindal wants ‘anchor babies’ deprived of automatic US citizenship ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
Silicon Valley miffed at Trump’s proposals
R
epublican frontrunner Donald Trump and lowpolling Bobby Jindal both want “anchor babies” or US-born children of illegal immigrants deprived of automatic citizenship guaranteed by the US constitution for 150 years. There are an estimated 11 million illegal or “undocumented” immigrants as the “politically correct” would have it, including about 300,000 from India, and both presidential hopefuls have vowed to stop more from sneaking in — Trump with a wall and Jindal somehow. Tough-talking Trump, who has quickly leapt to the top of the crowded Republican field with his rants against the political establishment, asserted Friday that the US Congress could end the guarantee of citizenship for US-born children of illegal immigrants. Meanwhile, Jindal, who was born three months after his pregnant mother came to the US from India,

has joined Trump in calling for the end of birthright citizenship. But Louisiana’s two-term governor, who is languishing at the bottom of most polls, made sure to point out at an event in Columbus, Ohio that when his parents immigrated, “they came to this country legally”.
Returning to his now familiar theme about being tired of hyphenated Americans, Jindal said anyone who wants to come to the U.S. must “learn English, adopt our values, and when you get here, roll up your sleeves and get to work”. “Immigration without assimilation is invasion,” he declared at a
WASHINGTON: Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s pitch to curb work visas for skilled foreign employees has not gone down well with the Silicon Valley with several bigwigs, including Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates, slamming the proposal. Fwd.us, a group founded by Facebook Inc. founder Mark Zuckerberg and others to lobby for issues important to the tech industry -- such as immigration reform -- has argued in favor of increasing, not decreasing, the number of H-1B visas, The Wall Street Journal reported. Republicans use market crash Three mayors launch climate change campaign to criticize China, Obama IANS, WASHINGTON
WASHINGTON: Republican presidential candidates used the Wall Street market crash to launch an attack on China and President Barack Obama’s foreign policy. Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump, who has repeatedly criticized the US for submitting to China, blamed Beijing’s policy for the crash at Dow Jones at 589 points on August 24 “Markets are crashing - all caused by poor planning and allowing China and Asia to dictate the agenda. This could get very messy! Vote Trump,” the real estate magnate wrote on
Twitter. “I’ve been talking about China for years. Because China is going bad, it’s going to bring us down too because we are so heavily coupled with China,” he said. Another Republican presidential favorite Scott Walker urged President Obama to withdraw the invitation to Chinese President Xi Jinping, expected to visit the US in September, EFE reported on August 25. “Americans are struggling to cope with the fall in today’s markets, driven in part by China’s slowing economy and the fact that they actively manipulate their economy,” Walker said.
M
ayors of the cities of Los Angeles, Houston and Philadelphia have announced a social media campaign to urge US leaders to sign an agreement for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions during the upcoming climate conference in Paris, media reported. “As President (Barack) Obama said at the Clean Energy Summit, the Clean Power Plan and other efforts to produce clean energy are critical for our nation’s economy,” said a joint statement by the three
Eric Garcetti
mayors. “These efforts are big steps forward, but we need Congress to step up and support binding US greenhouse gas reduction targets.” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Houston Mayor Annise Parker and
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter set up social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr, and use the #ClimateMayors hashtag for the campaign, trying to raise awareness about climate change. The action was taken on the start of the 100-day countdown to the UN climate change conference scheduled for November 30 in Paris. Garcetti, Parker and Nutter are asking other mayors to help show support through signing onto the international Compact of Mayors. “Urging our fellow mayors to help send a signal that the US is serious on climate change,” they said.
Abe asks Obama to investigate Hillary Clinton’s triple trouble - Trump, Sanders and emails alleged NSA spying ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
TOKYO: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday asked US President Barack Obama to investigate alleged spying by American security agencies on the government and corporate officials in Japan. During a telephone conversation, Obama apologized over the suspected eavesdropping by the National Security Agency (NSA), Kyodo news agency quoted government spokesperson Yoshihide Suga as saying. Suga quoted Abe as telling Obama that if the spying allegations are "true, it could shake the trust between alliance partners", and that he has “no choice but to express our
grave concern”. Towards the end of July, WikiLeaks had published documents that revealed NSA had been spying on the Japanese government and several firms since 2006, when Abe was first elected to power. Besides the reports, WikiLeaks also published an NSA list containing 35 "high priority" Japanese targets for telephonic interception.
I
f Republicans are hoping to ride out the tornado that Donald Trump has come to be, Hillary Clinton’s troubles reflected in her falling poll numbers are posing a dilemma for the Democrats too. But it is the controversy surrounding her use of a private server for sending emails during her four year stint at the State Department that is denting Clinton’s image and adding to her growing trust deficit even as she remains the favorite of her party. Clinton’s falling poll numbers have also given an added impetus to speculation about Vice President Joe Biden jumping into the presidential race. Biden, who begun exploring a presidential run a few weeks ago,
reportedly huddled with Democrat Senator Elizabeth Warren, the rising liberal star, who hasn’t endorsed any candidate for the presidential race so far. Biden’s entry into the race could really complicate things for the former first lady as several recent polls
show the vice president more trustworthy than her. Notwithstanding her troubles, numerous Indian Americans are involved in supporting the Clinton campaign in various ways, according a member of her campaign.

Gujarat burns in quota flames
Five killed, 100 wounded, dozens of vehicles torched as violence spread in the wake of Patel community demanding quota in jobs, education; army called out IANS, AHMEDABAD
F
ive people were killed, and over 100 injured as a statewide shutdown in Gujarat called by the Patidar Arakshan Andolan Samiti turned violent on August 26, officials said. Riots, arson, stone-pelting and widespread damage to public and private property forced the authorities to call the army and paramilitary forces. “Three people were killed in Ahmedabad and two in Banaskantha in firing by the paramilitary forces while attempting to control rioting mobs,” an official said. At least 100 people were injured in violence, mainly in group clashes and stone-pelting incidents, in
Sheena murder tale gets new twist MUMBAI: Former media honcho Peter Mukherjea, whose wife Indrani Mukherjea was arrested on August 25 on charges of killing Sheena Bora in 2012 and disposing off her body, Sheena Bora said on August 26 that the victim had an affair with his son Rahul Mukherjea. Mukherjea said he chose to overlook the relationship. Rahul is Peter Mukherjea’s son from an earlier marriage. “Sheena was in a relationship with my son, which Indrani disapproved of,” Peter Mukherjea said. He also said that he was told by Indrani that Sheena was her sister. He said he had no clue that Sheena was actually Indrani’s daughter from her earlier marriage, he told NDTV.

PM appeals for peace in Gujarat NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 26 appealed to the people of Gujarat to maintain peace, a day after the state witnessed violence at a mega rally seeking reservations for the Patel community. “Since Tuesday, the type of atmosphere that is building up in the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel, the manner in which violence is being used as a tool... we all know that violence serves no purpose. We have always believed that the development of the state is possible only if we all walk together and stay united,” Modi said.
ing Patidar community had organized a mammoth rally in Ahmedabad to demand caste reservation under the leadership of 22-year-old Hardik Patel. Hardik Patel, the convenor of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), addressed the gathering of over 1.20 million supporters at the sprawling GMDC Ground, vowing that the demand for reservations was non-negotiable. Late on August 25 night, Patel was detained and taken into custody by police after he launched a sudden hunger strike on the stage at the meeting venue.
Muslims’ growth rate slightly up: Census IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he Muslim population in India registered a marginal growth of less than a percent to reach 172.2 million in 2011, while the Hindu population also declined by roughly the same to touch 966.3 million, according to census data on religion released on August 25. The data on population by religious communities of census 2011, released by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, said Hindus constitute 79.8 percent and Muslims 14.2 percent of the population. The overall growth rate of population from 2001 to 2011 was 17.7 percent, while community wise it was 24.6 percent for Muslims, 16.8 for Hindus, 15.5 percent for Christians, 8.4 for Sikhs, 6.1 percent for
Buddhists and 5.4 percent for Jains. The data was released almost four years after the census, and comes just months before the assembly polls in Bihar. Of the total population of 1.21 billion in 2011, Hindus were 966.3 million (79.8 percent), Muslims 172.2 million (14.2 percent), Chris-
tians 27.8 million (2.3 percent), Sikhs 20.8 million (1.7 percent), Buddhists 8.4 million (0.7 percent), Jains 4.5 million (0.4 percent), other religions and persuasions (ORP) 7.9 million (0.7 percent). The release said the proportion of Muslim population to total population in 2011 had increased by 0.8 percent.
“It is my appeal to my brothers and sisters that the occasion calls for a single mantra - peace. Each and every issue can be resolved through talks,” the prime minister said. “We must work together to solve problems through talks and contribute in efforts to take Gujarat to new heights,” he said.
Adopting an aggressive stance, Patel had earlier served a 48-hour ultimate to the state government to concede to the PAAS demands, following which the agitation would be intensified. As news of the police action on Patel spread, angry Patidars reacted violently, attacking public and private property, buses, vehicles, as Chief Minister Anandiben Patel’s appeal for peace went unheeded. Overnight curfew imposed in many cities failed to deter the rioting mobs who were reacting to the Hardik’s detention and violence continued to spread.
India launches GSAT-6 satellite SRIHARIKOTA: India successfully launched its communication satellite GSAT-6, which has several strategic applications, in textbook style on Thursday using its heavy rocket geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV-D6). The GSLV rocket, with a cryogenic engine, slung the satellite in a geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO) from where it would be taken up to its final geostationary orbit. The successful flight of GSLV rocket gives the Indian space program a boost as getting the moreefficient cryogenic engine (which provides more thrust for every kilogram of propellant burnt) right is important for its future space programs. Indian scientists have spent two decades in developing the cryogenic technology at a cost of Rs.4 billion.

It isn’t the promise of funds which may help the BJP, but the latent fear among the voters of the return of what the party calls the “jungle raj” of RJD leader Lalu Prasad’s rule between 1990 and 2005
It’s anybody’s game in Bihar
AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
N
otwithstanding the cheers which Prime Minister Narendra Modi received while announcing the Rs.1.25 trillion special package for Bihar at an election rally, he will be making a mistake if he believes that the bonanza will ensure the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) runaway victory in the state assembly elections in October/November. All that it can do is to bring about a marginal improvement in the BJP’s position, for the Indian voter
is far too canny to be easily swayed by promises. Moreover, the more extravagant they are, the more suspicious he will be. Besides, the voter is aware that the bounty is for Bihar, and not for any particular party. So, irrespective of which alliance comes to power, whether it is the BJP-Lok Janshakti Party (LJP)Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP)Hindustan Awam Morcha (HAM) combination, or the Janata DalUnited (JD-U)-Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-Congress group, the gift will be available — unless the centre plays dirty. It isn’t the promise of funds, therefore, which will help the
BJP, but the latent fear among the voters of the return of what the party calls the “jungle raj” of RJD leader Lalu Prasad’s rule between 1990 and 2005. Although, theoretically, Lalu Prasad is a junior partner in Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s government, the preponderance of the Yadavs in Bihar’s social scene — this caste group makes up 16 per cent of the state’s population — gives the RJD a clear edge in political terms. The BJP is aware that the caste loyalties are so durable in Bihar that the backward caste base of the RJD and the JD-U will not be shaken.
What can cause a fissure, however, is the decision of Asaduddin Owaisi’s foray into Bihar politics because the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) leader may be able to chip away at the Muslim vote to the detriment of the JD-U-RJD-Congress alliance. In that case, the vaunted MuslimYadav (MY) factor, which has been the key to Lalu Prasad’s success, may be strained. As it is, the alliance suffered a minor blow when the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) walked out of it in protest against the allocation of three seats against its demand for
12. The Samajwadi Party (SP), too, has decided to have nothing to do with the “secular” combine which suggests, if anything, that the earlier grandiose plans for a new party or a Janata “parivar” were more hot air than anything substantial. So far as Bihar is concerned, the departures of the NCP and the SP may not be of much consequence to the two main players — the JD-U and RJD — but these mild tremors are bound to please the BJP. Even then, it is still anybody’s game in Bihar with BJP having a slight edge because the Modi magic hasn’t faded out completely.
What does axing of NSA talks mean to Kashmiris SHEIKH QAYOOM, SRINAGAR
P
akistan’s decision to call off the NSA-level talks with India proves an old maxim for the people of Jammu and Kashmir: Whether the knife falls on the watermelon or the watermelon falls on the knife, it is the watermelon that gets cut. There have been nearly 100 violations of the 2003 ceasefire by Pakistan on the Line of Control (LoC) and the international border in Jammu and Kashmir since January 1. Ten people have been killed in Pakistani firing and shelling in Jammu and Kashmir while Pakistan claims 10 people were killed in retaliatory Indian firing on their side of the divided Kashmir. Kashmiris fear the rising tensions between India and Pakistan would reflect in more ceasefire violations on the borders. Whether or not the two countries allow border skir-

mishes to get out of control and blow up into a larger conflict, for thousands of people living on the two sides of the border in divided Kashmir any ceasefire violation on the LoC or the international border means ‘War’. The politics of brinkmanship by
Pakistan that talks between the NSAs, mandated to focus on security, should also include Kashmir has proved self-defeating. If it was a question of who blinks first vis-a-vis calling off the NSA talks, it was Pakistan. Its insistence that its national security adviser
Sartaj Aziz must first meet the Kashmiri separatists before talking to his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval did not go down well with New Delhi. Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, chairman of the moderate Hurriyat group, had suggested a way out of the impasse that perhaps did not please either India or Pakistan. The Mirwaiz had said that Aziz could begin talking to Doval; he could meet the Kashmiri separatist leaders later. There is nothing new in either the separatist leaders meeting the Pakistani high commissioner in New Delhi or attending the Pakistan Day celebrations at the high commission. There is nothing new about Pakistan’s commitment to support the cause of separatism in Kashmir and there is nothing new about New Delhi’s inability to handle the local separatists — sometimes with kid gloves and other times with an iron fist. In order to keep their dwin-
dling political constituencies intact, most mainstream political parties, especially those chiefly based in the Muslim majority Valley, have remained soft towards the separatists or at least ensure that they are seen to be so. On this issue there was complete lack of coordination between New Delhi and Srinagar on the one hand and between the state police chief and the chief minister on the other. Who benefitted from the confusion? Ironically, all that has happened in the process is that whether it was intended or not, the stature of Kashmiri separatist leaders has gone up. The decision to prevent their meeting with Sartaj Aziz finally resulted in Pakistan calling off the NSA talks. But there is no doubt about one outcome of the growing tension between India and Pakistan. Millions living in divided Kashmir must continue to lead an edgy, uncertain life.

Indian leads global awareness
In a brave act, Indian-origin Kiran Gandhi, while completing the London marathon, chose to run even when going through her menstrual cycle
AMID THE FREE FLOW...
KAVITA BAJELI-DATT, NEW DELHI
S
he has become an internet sensation after completing the London marathon sans any sanitary protection during period in a bid to end the stigma on menstruation. Indian-origin Kiran Gandhi, a Harvard Business School graduate and a professional drummer, said the silence about the subject has to end, and she was happy to have started “a global conversation online” on periods. Born to Wall Street investment banker Vikram Gandhi and social activist Meera Gandhi, she said that after her “free bled” episode went viral, she received letters from diverse countries including Iran, India, Pakistan and Croatia. In an e-mail interview with IANS, Gandhi, 26, who has toured globally as a drummer with M.I.A and Thievery Corp and has been profiled widely by media for jug-

gling her busy student life with the hectic schedule of a musician, said the world is now talking about periods and how women face the
pain in silence. Asked whether she was able to raise awareness about the issue, she said: “(It has) started a global conversation online that I
never could have expected. Just yesterday a brave young woman emailed me a screenshot of her on Whatsapp. It was between her and her trainer, in India. She said that for many years she never told her trainer why she misses certain days of working out each month but finally, because of this conversation, had the courage to say it was because of her period.” Gandhi said the woman’s trainer created a plan that wouldn’t be as painful or uncomfortable so that she could still come in and train. Gandhi, who was preparing for the London marathon for over a year, got her period a day before the event. She had two options - to opt out of the first 26.2-mile race or run and let it flow. She chose the second option. She ran the 41.195 km alongside two of her closest friends, completing the course in 4 hours 49 minutes, with her running pink pants stained.
‘Innovation in business is overrated’ IANS, WASHINGTON
D WASHINGTON: In a miraculous surgical feat, an Indian-American surgeon has gifted a pair of new ears to an eight-year-old boy in the US, media reported. Elijah Bell, a second-grade student at the Frazer Elementary in Stark county, Ohio, was born with bilateral atresia microtia — a rare birth defect where the outer ears are undeveloped. But thanks to Ananth Murthy, director of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Akron Children’s Hospital, Elijah got a new pair re-constructed from his rib cartilage, Canton Representative reported this week. The surgical feat has been reported across the US as a “miracle” because of the intricacies involved. Besides five surgeries to create the ears — starting when Elijah was just four-year-old — Murthy had to use a skin graft from the boy’s thigh to create a gap between his ears and his head. The final surgery was done in July when Murthy gave Elijah’s ears detailed “hills and valleys”.
rawing an analogy between how Formula One (F1) racing teams and businesses function, a new study co-authored by an Indian-origin researcher has found that big changes usually do not deliver as much value for businesses as incremental changes. “The conventional wisdom that companies need to embrace change is often wrong,” said co-author Jaideep Anand, professor of strategy at the Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business. Links between alcohol consumption and risky sexual encounters are not new, said investigators, but this study identifies the disconnect between what women have in mind when they drink and have sex and what really happens. “The idea behind our study was to first unveil what women expect to happen, and then uncover what consequences really occur,” said lead

hanks to Arteria, a Kerala Tourism initiative, walls in this state capital are being transformed turned into exquisite pieces of art. Arteria has gained momentum with the walls of University Stadium in the heart of the capital city being painted with colorful images of artistic eloquence that will be unveiled for the public during the official beginning of Onam scheduled for next week.
The concept of turning city walls into canvases for artistic expressions mainly aims at the beautification of city and to improve the attitude of public towards contemporary art and paintings,” said Tourism Minister A.P. Anil Kumar. He also noted that attracting the public eye to art works of this dimension facilitates their participation in a new artistic culture that assumes greater significance considering the fact that “our public’s exposure to contemporary art is limited”.
The project, implemented by District Tourism Promotion Council in coordination with the district administration, has already received a sum of Rs.1.5 million for its initial
phase from the state government. “The project will be expanded further depending on sponsorship availability,” tourism department official A. Udayakumar said.

ndian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Amit Mishra spun a web around Sri Lanka to skittle them out for 134 runs in the second innings to win the second cricket Test by 278 runs here this week. Sri Lanka were 130/9 at lunch with India needing just a wicket to level the series and the hosts could add only four runs to their total in the post-lunch session. With the win, India level series at three-match 1-1 at the P. Sara Oval ground.
COLOMBO: India captain Virat Kohli congratulated retiring Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara on a glittering career and said it has been his pleasure playing with the batting maestro. “I just want to congratulate Kumar again on a wonderful career. I have spoken a lot about him, everyone has, in the last week, but I can’t help saying it again that it has been an absolute pleasure playing with you,” Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony of the second Test where India beat Sri Lanka by 278 runs to level the three-match series 1-1.
India-Sri Lanka: 2nd Test For the visitors, off-spinner Ashwin returned figures of 5-42, while his-teammate leggie Mishra grabbed 3-29 to complete India’s resounding victory. wasn't anti-Pakistan, but that stillgot banned. Telling uncomfortable and ugly truth isn’t accepted easily and sadly gets the film banned. Therefore, the ban on Phantom is no surprise and was quite expected," Saif Ali Khan said.

rrfan Khan and Konkana Sen Sharma starrer Talvar, which is based on Aarushi Talwar's murder will be releasing on October 2. The first poster of the film, which looks edgy, was released on August 21. Irrfan looks very intense in the poster that also focusses on the blindfolded Lady Justice holding a sword in one hand and scales of justice in the other. The poster read: "India’s most controversial case reopens on 2nd October”. Director Meghna Gulzar took to micro-blogging website Twitter, where she shared the poster and wrote: "#TalvarTheMovie @irrfan_k @konkonas @JungleePictures".
Irrfan Khan plays the role of an investigating officer in the movie Talvar
Even Manish Gupta’s directorial Rahasya, which featured actors Kay Kay Menon and Tisca Chopra that released earlier this year, was also inspired by the Aarushi murder mystery case.
The story of Talvar movie revolves around the sensational murder of 14-year-old Aarushi Talwar and 45-year-old domestic helper named Hemraj, that took place in the year 2008 in Noida.

‘Manjhi - The Mountain Man’ - Unsung hero’s tale
I
nspired by a true story, “Manjhi - The Mountain Man” is a stirring tale of an unsung hero, Dashrath Manjhi (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), the man who single handedly cut a mountain to pave a path from his village Gehlore to the nearest town, Wazirganj near Gaya in Bihar. It is a tale of romance, pain, revenge, determination and grit, often compared to the Mughul Emperor Shah Jahan’s love for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. But unlike Shah Jahan, Dashrath was a mere casual labourer who was often scoffed at as ‘pagla’, an obstinate fool.
Film: Manjhi - The Mountain Man; Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Radhika Apte, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Pankaj Tripathi, Gaurav Dwivedi, Ashraf Ul Haque, Jagat Rawat and Deepa Sahi; Director: Ketan Mehta; Rating: ***1/2 After an unfortunate accident in 1960 in which Dashrath lost his wife, Phaguniya (Radhika Apte), he plunges into his mission which, like the Taj Mahal, took him near-
ly 22 years to complete. Ketan Mehta’s depiction of the tale begins with Dashrath in soiled and blood-soaked attire standing on an elevated highland before the mighty mountain seething with anger and swearing to avenge nature for being the cause of his beloved wife’s demise. And as the drama unfolds with stimulating, brilliant and realistic performances, it is indeed a visual treat to watch actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a physically strenuous role slipping into Dashrath’s cloak effortlessly with immense fineese and ease.

BAPS Swaminarayan’s tributes to Abdul Kalam
California DMV employees traded cash for licenses
BY A STAFF WRITER ACRAMENTO, CA -- As many as 100 commercial truck drivers paid up to $5,000 each to bribe state Department of Motor Vehicles employees for illegal California licenses, federal authorities said. Up to 23 traffic accidents could be related to the fraud, though there were no fatalities. Emma Klem, a 45-year-old Salinas DMV employee, and trucking school owner Kulwinder Dosanjh Singh, 58, of Turlock, both pleaded guilty on August 11 to conspiracy to commit bribery and identity fraud, US Attorney Benjamin Wagner said. Two other DMV employees in Salinas and Sacramento and two other Central Valley trucking school operators have been arrested on similar charges. Court records say the employees changed computer records to falsely show that drivers had passed written and behind-the-wheel tests after they were bribed by the owners of three truck-driving schools between June 2011 and March 2015. “Individuals who use their positions to obtain commercial drivers’ licenses for unskilled and untested drivers jeopardize our nation’s security and safety. Allowing unqualified drivers to operate heavy commercial trucks on our highways is honestly quite chilling,’’ said Carol Webster, acting assistant special agent in charge of the US Homeland Security Investigations office in Sacramento. DMV examiners Andrew Kimura, 30, of Sacramento, and Robert Turchin, 65, of Salinas, were indicted earlier this month on charges of conspiracy, bribery and fraud in connection with identification documents, along with trucking school owners Pavitar Dosangh Singh, 55, of Sacramento, and Mangal Gill, 55, of San Ramon. Pavitar Singh and Kimura have pleaded not guilty, while Turchin and Gill were arraigned on August 14 in US District Court in Sacramento.
S Dr. Kalam presents his book Transcendence to Pramukh Swami Maharaj in June 2015
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Robbinsville, NJ honored the legacy of the late former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam with the launch of his final book and gift to mankind, ‘Transcendence.’ The inspiring book documents a 14-year journey between Dr. Kalam and Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the fifth spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, who carries forward a legacy of enlightened gurus that goes back to the early nineteenth century. The event was a tribute to Dr. Kalam’s lifetime of dedicated public service and varied contributions to India’s development as a country. It was attended by community leaders from across the tri-state which included Dr. Sudhir Parikh, H. R. Shah, Anand Shah, Sunil Nayak, Harikishan Eppanapally, Bawa Jain, Rajiv Bhamri, Dr. Mahendra Patel, Dr. Prashant Chandra. Hundreds of people joined the special assembly to pay tribute to the “people’s President, scientist and rushi.” Throughout his remarkable career, Dr. Kalam wrote over 30 books and is considered to be one of India’s most widely-read and best-selling authors.
C
In ‘Transcendence’, Dr. Kalam’s writings focus on the philosophical and spiritual guidance from Pramukh Swami Maharaj that shaped his purpose and direction in serving India. Most astonishing about their profound friendship is that Dr. Kalam was not conversant in Gujarati, Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s native language, and Pramukh Swami does not speak English. Despite the language barrier, they were able to transcend communication challenges. The resulting bond, built on selfless service and sustained through common interest, was life-changing for Dr. Kalam and is thoughtfully articulated in his writing. The program began with the prayer “Man uski karo prarthana” followed by video presentation showing the life story of Dr. Kalam. Commenting on Dr. Kalam’s life work, Dr. Sudhir Parikh, allergy specialist, philanthropist and publisher, said: “His message was his life. He was a great teacher, a divine man. He transformed his life with his interactions and with the blessings of Pramukh Swami Maharaj.” H. R. Shah, CEO of TV Asia, shared similar sentiments. Anand Shah, founder of Indicorp and Sarvajal, said: “Dr. Kalam was a preacher of the strengths of India to youths, as
Pujya Dr Swami (Pujya Swaymprakashdas Swami) pays tribute to Dr Kalam
he knew that youth is the power of the future. BAPS has turned that into a global entity that can empower young people of mind and of age to find answers that are full and complete both in spirituality and science. “BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha is an embodiment of the strengths of our culture, our history our spirituality. It is a great honor to pay tribute to Dr. Kalam who was mentored by Pramukh Swami Maharaj.” “I had the honor of meeting Dr. Kalam. He was the finest president of India. He is also a scientist and a Muslim. He is writing a book about Pramukh Swami Maharaj. How many times do you see this? Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s blessings helped him so much and he was so moved that he decided to write this book to honor this great saint,” said Bawa Jain, secretary-general at World Council of Religious Leaders. Harikishan Eppanapally, founder and president of Lead India Bharat Ratnas Education and Research for Transforming Youth, said: “Anything going outside the orbit floats, the relationship between Dr. Kalam and Pramukh Swamiji proved the fact that when we transcend beyond religions we are all are in the same spiritual plain and Pramukh Swami elevated Dr. Kalam into this”.

Deadly virus threat in McHenry County BY A STAFF WRITER cHENRY COUNTY, IL -Mosquito batches recently collected in northwest suburban Nunda Township and Lake in the Hills have tested positive for West Nile virus. These batches were collected on July 31 and August 6, and are the first to test positive for the virus in McHenry County in 2015, said officials in a statement. McHenry County Department of Health officials tested 311 mosquito batches as of August 18, but all other batches have tested negative for West Nile virus. The department will continue to collect and test mosquito batches until mid-October, but the risk of West Nile virus remains until the first frost. Health officials say those infected by the virus experience fever, headache and body aches, but serious illnesses, like meningitis and death, are possible. People over 50 have the highest risk of severe disease. Officials told residents to use an insectrepellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants for more protection, and empty any standing water outside.

US may soon ease rules for F1 visa students BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- There is some good news for international students in the US as their government may allow F1 visa to be treated on par with H-1B visa, enabling them to work and stay in USA for 6 years after completion of their course. Once implemented, this new rule will come into force after February 12, 2016. If this happens, then the dependability on the ‘lottery’ of H-1B visa would be removed, and would pave way for more Indian students to work and stay. Students under F1 visa (with course duration of at least 9 months) are allowed to work for 12 months in US after the completion of course; in case it’s a course in STEM streams (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), then they can stay for 24 months. But after this, they need to apply for H-1B visa for continuing their job; and this is not a guarantee as due to soaring demand, their application may get rejected, even if their employers are sponsoring the student. If the H-1B visa application fails, then the only option is to go back or start another educational course and then wait for the next 12 months to apply for the lottery. Washington Alliance of Technology Workers (WATW), an association of US employees, filed a lawsuit against this decision. On August 12, 2015, US District Court Judge Ellen Huvelle of the District of Columbia, while hearing this lawsuit, passed a ruling which may allow the students to work for more than 6 years under F1 visa. Interestingly, WATW has actually won this lawsuit; but despite this loss, F1 students will get an advantage of extended stay due to a 7-year-old rule formulated by Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Seven years ago, DHS had proposed that F1 visa holders and H-1B visa holders should be treated equally in terms of job duration and stay. However, DHS failed to make this notice as public and thus, as per US federal rules, DHS has been asked to implement the same within 6 months (that is February 12, 2016). It is unlikely that DHS will ignore the court’s ruling as it can severely impact US tech industry as thousands of F1 visa workers, would be forced to return back to their native countries in the absence of H-1B visas.

Dr. Sayeed, who was the chief guest at both the functions, was accompanied by his mother, Kaneez Fatima, who herself is a senior litterateur and multi-faceted personality of Urdu literature. Dr. Hamid Hussain Amrohvi said that the main thrust of his book was not only to disseminate the golden teachings of Holy Prophet PBUH but also to inspire people to apply them in their daily lives to create a society based on the principles of justice, equality, and peaceful co-existence.
C
“My book is a humble step in the direction of urging Muslims to not only preach peace and brotherhood but also to become the actual followers and role models of this message”, added Dr. Amrohvi. The book release function was followed by the Natya Mushaira which was characterized by spiritual fervor, devotion, and reverence to Prophet Mohammed, PBUH. Some of the most-loved names in natya poetry, from across the US, regaled and captivated hundreds of Urdu-loving Indian Americans at the mushaira with their exquisite couplets. Famous poetess Umme Habiba, who kick-started the Mushaira, lived up to the expectations of her admirers. The impact of her natya poetry on the audience was such that virtually every couplet was followed by a chorus of “wah-wahs”. The function was attended by Amir Mirza, Huma Mirza, Ghulam Mustafa Anjum, Hashmat Sohail, Shah Naeem Uddin, Naeemi, Prof Naqi Akhtar, Hassan Zainul Abedin, Ghousia Sultana, Khaleel Uzzaman, Ashfaq Syed and Ayeisha Osman Abdul Hakeem conducted the program.

The participants of varied age group presented patriotic, classical and folk themed cultural dances and presentations. BY A STAFF WRITER EORIA , IL -- Satwinder Singh Bhola, son-in-law of Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa, was found dead outside his apartment building at midnight last week. Bhola, 52, received multiple stab wounds, and Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll said the injury to his neck might have proved fatal. When the Peoria police responded to a call at 12:02 am, Satwinder Singh was found dead in a nearby parking lot. Robbery does not seem to be the motive behind the murder as some $2,000 and a blank check were found in his pocket. Bhola is the son-in-law of Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa, an 83-year-old human rights activist who has been on a hunger strike since January 16, 2015, to seek the release of political prisoners who have completed their sentences. Bhola’s wife Sarvarinder Kaur accompanied her father in India for six months. She returned recently to the US after failing to persuade him to end the agitation.

BY A STAFF WRITER ITTLE ROCKS, AR -- Hindus are still waiting for reply from Arkansas Secretary of State Mark Martin regarding their request seeking permission to erect a privately-funded statue of Lord Hanuman in Arkansas State Capitol grounds in Little Rock, which they emailed on August 6. Duties of the Secretary of State include Capitol Facilities Division, which cares for the State Capitol and its surrounding landscape. Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in this email sent to Martin and some other officials in the Arkansas Secretary of State office, had said that Lord Hanuman was greatly revered and worshipped in Hinduism. Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, in a statement, said that they were now thinking of sending the same request to Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson. Rajan Zed pointed out that Arkansas had now substantial number of Hindu residents and students who would love to see a statue of Lord Hanuman, who was known for incredible strength and was perfect grammarian.

BY A STAFF WRITER EW JERSEY -- A Pablo Picasso painting stolen from a Paris museum 14 years ago that was discovered on a cargo ship in Newark in December will be returned to France. The repatriation of “La Coiffeuse” or “The Hairdresser” follows an investigation led by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations. The piece was last week ceremoniously handed over at the French Embassy in Washington and now will be sent home. Federal officials, following up an investigative lead, inspected a targeted shipment in Newark in December and found the painting. Fraudulent statements regarding the shipment’s value, country of origin and description were also recovered; the $15-million Picasso was labeled as a low-value handicraft worth about $30. The painting has been listed on the Interpol Stolen Works of Art database since it was reported stolen in 2001.

20-minute walk good for heart Moderate walking along with some exercises like cycling or swimming can significantly lower the risk of heart failure in you; go hit the park now IANS, LONDON
M
oderate amount of physical activity, particularly walking and bicycling, can significantly lower the risk of heart failure, says a study. The participants who had the lowest levels of physical activity had a 47 percent higher risk of heart failure while those with highest levels had 51 percent higher
risk than men with a median level. When analysing the different types of physical activity, the study found that walking or bicycling for 20 minutes per day was associated with the largest risk reduction. “We found that recent activity may be more important for heart failure protection than past physical activity levels. The first incidence of heart failure in men was also later for those who actively walked or bicycled 20 minutes
each day,” said study co-author Andrea Bellavia from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. When enrolling in the study, participants from two counties in Sweden completed a questionnaire about their level of activity at work, home, walking or bicycling, and exercise in the year prior at an average of 60 years old and retro-
spectively at 30 years old. Researchers assigned each type of physical activity an intensity score and determined walking or bicycling just 20 minutes per day was associated with a 21 percent lower risk of heart failure. They found that men who were active at 30 years old but were inactive at the time of study enroll-
ment did not have a decreased risk of heart failure. Heavy physical activity, such as long distance running, or manual labor may put stress on the body, which in turn has adverse effects on the heart. The study was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Heart Failure.
Stress won’t give you cancer
Heavy smokers gain more weight after quitting

S
tressful events are not associated with cancer, researchers have said, adding that people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are not at the risk of developing the deadly disease. The large population sample study by researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) also showed no strong evidence of associations even among select groups of the population. “The general public may have a perception that stress
NEW YORK: Heavy smokers are likely to gain more weight after quitting than light to moderate smokers, says a new study. “”This is good news for light to moderate smokers who are concerned about their weight gain. It means that in the long term, quitting smoking will not make that big of an impact on their weight,” said one of the researchers Susan Veldheer from Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Centre in Pennsylvania, US.
contributes to cancer occurrence,” said corresponding author Jaimie L. Gradus, assistant professor of psychiatry and epidemiology. “This study, however, provided no evidence that a severe chronic stress disorder such as PTSD is associated with cancer incidence,” he added. According to the researchers, the large sample and long study period allowed them to examine associations that have not been studied previously as they were able to look at rare cancer outcomes and associations among important subgroups.
Autistic people are actually more creative IANS, LONDON
Quitting smoking may cause weight gain but how much weight gain depends from person to person. To better understand personal factors that may contribute to weight gain, researchers analysed data from 12,204 participants. They looked at the number of cigarettes smoked per day and body mass index before quitting, to see how these factors may have affected weight change over 10 years.
P
eople with high levels of autistic traits are more likely to produce unusually creative ideas, finds a first-of-its-kind study. Psychologists from the University of East Anglia (UEA) and the University of Stirling examined the relationship between autistic-like traits and creativity. While they found that people with high autistic traits produced fewer responses when generating alternative solutions to a problem known as “divergent thinking” the responses they did produce were more original and creative. “People with high autistic traits
could be said to have less quantity but greater quality of creative ideas,” said study co-author Dr Martin Doherty from Norfolkbased University of East Anglia’s
school of psychology. Autism is a mental condition, present right from early childhood days, characterized by great difficulty in communicating and forming relation-
ships with others. These people are typically considered to be more rigid in their thinking, so the fact that the ideas they have are more unusual or rare is nothing less than surprising. “This difference may have positive implications for creative problem solving,” Dr Doherty added. It is the first study to find a link between autistic traits and the creative thinking processes. The research, published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, looked at people who may not have a diagnosis of autism but who have high levels of behavior and thought processes typically associated with the condition.

As part of their analysis, researchers found that women initiated 69 percent of all divorces compared to 31 percent for men. On the other hand where nonmarital breakups are concerned, the team noted, women and men are just as likely to end non-marital relationships. The results support the feminist assertion that some women experience heterosexual marriage as oppressive or uncomfortable. Single people can also have satisfying lives, researchers have found. “It is a well-documented finding that single people tend to be less happy compared to those in a relationship but that may not be true for everyone,” said lead researcher Yuthika Girme, psychology doctoral candidate at University of Auckland. People who fear relationship conflicts are just as happy when they are single or in a relationship. In a survey of more than 4,000 residents, people with high “avoidance social goals” - who try at all costs to avoid relationship disagreements and conflict - were just as

Conversely, the study found that participants with low avoidance goals who aren’t worried about the ups and downs of a relationship were less happy when they were single.
The study participants ranged in age from 18 to 94 years old with long-term relationships lasting almost 22 years on average. One-fifth of the participants were single at the time of the study. “Trying too hard to avoid relationship conflicts actually may create problems,” Girme said. While high avoidance goals may help people be happier when they are single, it can have negative effects in a relationship, contributing to anxiety and loneliness. With a high divorce rate, solo parenting, and many people delaying marriage to pursue career goals, the number of single people is on the rise these days. “Greater approach goals tends to have the best results for people in a relationship, but they also get most hurt when single,” Girme added.

But it turns out that women’s role in initiating breakups is unique to heterosexual marriage,” he informed. There wasn’t statistically much disparity between the percentage of splits by single women and men.
