The first Indian leader to visit California in more than 30 years later this month, Modi will go to Facebook for a town hall style question answer session and visit other top tech companies like Google and Adobe systems as also electric carmaker Tesla. As the Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has announced, the September 27 town hall at the company’s Menlo Park headquarters will “discuss how communities can work together to address social and economic challenges.” Modi, who has more Facebook fans than any politician except for

Migrant crisis high on Pope’s US visit agenda WASHINGTON: Europe’s spiralling migrant crisis will be at the centre of talks between Pope Francis and US president Barack Obama during the pontiff’s visit to Washington on September 23, the US administration said. US House votes against Iran n- deal WASHINGTON: The US House of Representatives voted against a resolution backing the nuclear agreement with Iran, in a symbolic vote started by congressional Republicans who object to the deal. The result of September 11 vote, however, would not stop President Barack Obama from implementing the international agreement, Xinhua reported. After hours of debate, the House voted 269 to 162 against the resolution. All but one Republicans voted against approval of the agreement. The 162 approving votes came from Democrats. Twenty-five Democrats also voted against approval of the deal. The House also voted 247-186 to disapprove Obama on lifting economic sanctions against Iran. Both bills were expected to be killed in the House as they would not be taken up by the Senate. Democrats in the Senate have already blocked a resolution disapproving the Iran deal, lending President Obama a major victory.

Republicans see Trump as their best bet: Poll

s rival Republican presidential candidates looked for ways of combating a surging Donald Trump, a new poll suggested that party supporters increasingly think he was their best bet for the 2016 presidential race. With confidence fading in traditional politicians like Jeb Bush and Wisconsin governor Scott Walker, 39 percent of Republican voters viewed Trump as their best shot at winning the presidency, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll. This compared with 26 percent who favored him in a CBS survey in August. Only 15 percent said they would not back him as the party’s nominee. Despite some reservations about Trump, the real estate mogul

appears to be gaining acceptance as a possible nominee, suggested the poll released on the eve of second presidential debate Wednesday at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. Neurosurgeon Ben Carson, another outsider, has also risen to 23 percent from just 6 percent early last month. Trump draws 27 percent support in the new poll, compared with 24 percent in August. Among Democrats, uneasiness with Hillary Clinton is growing and creating a possible opening for Vice President Joseph Biden, as he mulls a presidential run, the poll found. Her lead over self-proclaimed socialist Senator Bernie Sanders has shrunk from 41 percentage points to 20 points. Nearly six in 10 Democrats said they wanted to see Biden join the race.

he National Democratic Alliance has finalized the seat-sharing arrangement for the Bihar assembly elections, with the BJP keeping the lion’s share of 160 seats, leaving 83 for its allies LJP, RLSP and HAM. It was also decided to contest the Bihar polls under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and let the chief minister be decided by winning legislators after the poll results are declared. The maximum of 40 seats were given to Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), followed by 23 seats to Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP) and 20 seats to former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM). Dengue deaths jolt Delhi govt into action IANS, NEW DELHI

he death of a child due to dengue allegedly because of apathy of hospitals — the second such case in a week — led Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to conduct surprise inspections of hospitals on September 15 and holding a meeting of his cabinet to discuss the possibility of an assembly session to frame a law to deal with “negligence” of private hospitals. The Delhi government also issued instructions to schools to ensure that for the next one month students come to classes wearing clothes which fully cover them irrespective of school uniforms.

Health Minister Satyendra Jain held meetings with officials of private hospitals and told them to increase the number of beds, admit dengue patients and not turn them away. He said government hospitals, if needed, can hold walk-in interviews to recruit more doctors and nurses to deal with the rush of

patients. According to data released till September 14 by the three civic corporations the number of deaths due to dengue was five and the total dengue cases reported in the city were 1,872. The family members of six-year-old Aman, who died on September 13, alleged that several hospitals declined him admission while the child was running up a fever. “We took him to Safdarjung Hospital but we were told that the boy was doing fine and there was no problem,” Aman’s father Manoj Sharma said. But Aman’s condition deteriorated that night.

PATNA: The filing of nomination papers for the first phase of Bihar assembly elections, slated to be held on October 12, began on September 16, an official said. In the first phase, elections will be held in 49 of the 243 assembly constituencies. “The process for the five-phase assembly elections in Bihar has begun,” Additional Chief Electoral Officer R. Lakshamanan said here. The last date for filing nominations for this phase is September 23. While the scrutiny of papers will be held on September 24, candidates can withdraw their nominations till September 26. The constituencies going to polls in the first phase are in 10 districts of the state — including Begusarai, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Munger, Jamui and Samastipur.

India’s bid for UNSC seat gets a boost UNITED NATIONS: Boosting India’s efforts for a permanent Security Council seat, the UN General Assembly on September 14 endorsed a document that will be the basis for negotiations on reforming the Council and allowing the stalled process to make progress.

The Assembly adopted a decision by Assembly President Sam Kahamba Kutesa that sets out a negotiating text for the Council reform and calls for continuing the negotiations in the next session in a process known as Intergovernmental Negotiations. This marks a breakthrough in the long-stalled reform process because of a lack of negotiating text that can be the basis of discussions. India’s Permanent Representative Asoke Kumar Mukerji, welcoming the Assembly’s endorsement by consensus of Kutesa’s decision, said that the reform process is now “irreversible” and the adoption of Kutesa’s decision has changed the dynamics of the Council reform process. Mukerji said that Council reforms were essential.

he extension of Sonia Gandhi’s term as Congress president by another year in her 17th year in the position is an admission of the party’s failure to be a living, evolving, dynamic entity rather than an acknowledgement of her staying power and acceptability within the organization. Any political party in a democracy which adopts the norms of authoritarian regimes where leaders generally have life-long tenures merely exposes the pathetic paucity of talent within the outfit. In the Congress’s case, the resemblance with, say, a dictatorship like North Korea is strengthened by the fact that both the present leader and the already designated successor belong to the same family. The obsequious kowtowing to the two by Congressmen is also not dissimilar

to the meek submissiveness to the powers-that-be which characterizes totalitarian establishments. However, in addition to these unflattering similarities, there is another aspect of the Congress Working Committee decision on Sonia Gandhi which reflects poorly on the prospects of her son, the heirapparent, Rahul Gandhi. It is that he has obviously been found wanting in the internal assessments which preceded the move to enable his mother to continue as party chief. From this aspect, the fact that the crown prince remains where he was can be regarded as a blow to his prestige. Evidently, the 57-day sabbatical in a Buddhist monastery in Myanmar which was apparently expected to prepare him for greater responsibilities has not yielded the desired results. That even a party which apparently looks upon the Nehru-Gandhis as demi-gods found someone

ith the premise that is spelt through the dialogue, “Ek goonda, kya ek IG ki beti se pyaar kar sakta hai”, you expect the plot, which is a remake of Subhash Ghai’s superhit film of the same name, to be gripping. But director Nikhil Advani’s version, is a far cry from the original. If it was the music and songs that made Subhash Ghai’s 1983 film Hero a superhit and a runaway success, it is the performance by the lead cast that makes Nikhil Advani’s film bearable. Sooraj Pancholi plays the mobster with a strong character, Sooraj Kaushik, who is indebted to his godfather Pasha, whom he lovingly calls “Baba”. And Athiya Shetty plays Radha, the Inspector General of Police, Shrikant Mathur’s daughter who is in love with Sooraj. While their onscreen chemistry is perfunctory, they seem earnest and promising. They make a sincerely charming and self-assured pair. With a well-chiselled physique, Sooraj appears to be a bit reticent and camera shy, whereas Athiya, is poised and confidence personified.

Also the direction, with scant regard to detailing, is careless and without conviction. Thus, making the entire viewing experience a silly proposition. With excellent production values, Advani’s film, though technically advanced, is poorly executed in terms of writing. The characters, without much thought given into their back-stories, are shallow and underdeveloped. And the screenplay is ridiculously flawed and confusing at times. Overall, this Hero is a below mediocre fare except for the lead pair’s straight-forward performances. —Troy Ribeiro

Gita chanting contest by Chinmay Mission

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO (IL) -- Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayanada’s vision is to encourage Balavihar children to memorize Bhagavad Gita verses with the hope that later as adults they will be inspired to understand and live Geeta. This vision was rejuvenated with the second international Gita chanting competition - Chant Geeta Enchant Krishna. Chinmaya Mission Chicago was honored to host the Gita chanting competition finals of Chinmaya Mission West, US with Swami Sharanananda as the national coordinator. The competition was held at the Badri Center on September 5 and 6. At least 165 children came from 24 centers from all across the US to participate. The auspicious event happened to be held on Shri Krishna Janmashtami and the installation day of Shri Radha Krishna prabhavali at the Yamunotri center of Chinmaya Mission Chicago. Pujya Gurudev’s eternal guidance and presence was experienced at this event. The finalists from local and regional competitions, the cream of Chinmaya Mission Balavihar, assembled for this historical event that was presided by Swami Ishwarananda of Los Angeles. The children were divided into four age groups. They competed within their group one at a time. There was a team of 18 judges from different centers. Indian teen is charged with woman’s murder BY A STAFF WRITER AMPA, FL -- A 17-year-old Indian American teenager has been charged with the firstdegree murder of a 37-year-old woman after an argument between them turned ugly. The police said Sean Patel allegedly shot Davtara G. Grayson at his home at 1481 Hamlet Avenue in the Clearwater Beach area with a stolen gun. An argument between Patel and Grayson broke out sometime around 8 pm on September 3. The argument took a violent turn, resulting in Grayson being shot. She died at the scene. The gun was stolen from an unlocked vehicle from Madeira Beach, Fla., June 11, say the police who took Patel into custody about an hour after the shooting. Florida authorities are yet to determine whether Patel will be charged as an adult. Patel is currently being held at a juvenile detention facility in Pinellas County. “That aspect of the case is a reminder that people should always lock their vehicles and properly secure their weapons,” an e-mail from the police department stated. The nature of the relationship between Patel and Grayson is unclear.

Ahmed Mohamed, a high-school freshman at MacArthur High School in Irving, Tex., was taken into police custody on September 15 when his homemade digital clock was mistaken for a bomb by school officials and the police. Irving, Tex. Police Chief Larry Boyd told reporters next day that no charges would be brought against Mohamed for bringing a “suspicious device” to school.

Seven Indians charged in multi-million dollar liquor store sales tax fraud sweep BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL — Attorney General Lisa Madigan today announced charges against seven Chicago liquor store operators as part of a sweep to crack down on sales tax evasion and interstate liquor bootlegging. “Operation Seven & Seven” is a joint effort with the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) to investigate and prosecute untaxed or “bootlegged” liquor brought in from outside Illinois. The charges are the result of a twoyear criminal tax investigation conducted by IDOR’s Criminal Investigations Division. The investigation culminated with the execution of search warrants at seven Chicago liquor stores, earning it the nickname “Operation Seven & Seven.” Madigan charged seven defendants today in Cook County Circuit Court with sales tax evasion of more than $100,000, a Class 1 felony punishable by up to four to 15 years in prison. One additional defendant – Dipakkumar Patel – was charged with sales tax evasion of more than $10,000, a Class 2 felony punishable by up to three to seven years in prison. Between July 2010 and December 2013,

Madigan alleged, the seven defendants collectively defrauded the state out of more than $3.5 million in sales taxes. an issue that carries both criminal and tax implications,” said Connie Beard, Illinois Department of Revenue director. Five of those charged were arrested by IDOR special agents, with the assistance of the Bridgeview and Palos Hills Police Departments, yesterday morning on no-bond warrants, and the remaining defendants later surrendered to authorities. All seven defendants are scheduled to appear in bond court this afternoon. Attorney General office has worked to improve the state’s ability to pursue businesses and retailers who avoid paying sales taxes by initiating legislation that became law in 2013. The law created the crime of sales tax evasion and imposed stronger, graduated penalties based on the amount of sales taxes evaded. Operation Seven & Seven is the first of its kind since the law was implemented. The cases were investigated by IDOR’s Criminal Investigations Division. Senior Assistant Attorney General Lori Jordan and Assistant Attorneys General Victor Turla and Claire Lusher are handling the cases for Madigan’s Special Prosecutions Bureau. The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Necklace-snatchers on prowl in trains BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL – The Chicago police are warning CTA riders of a man stealing expensive necklaces from women on Blue and Red Line trains. A community alert said the suspect waited for a train to approach a stop, ripped the necklace off the victim’s neck and took off running through the opening doors. The police said the suspect had stolen three necklaces in the last three weeks. The most recent robbery occurred on a Blue Line train near the Division stop in the 1200-block of North Milwaukee Avenue around 6:50 am on September 2. Another took place on a Red Line train near the Cermak-Chinatown stop in the 100-block of West Cermak Road around 7:05 am on August 3. The first victim was robbed on a Blue Line train near the UIC-Halsted stop in the 800-block of West Harrison Street around 3:30 pm on July 27. CTA surveillance photos show the suspect is a bald African American man between 20 and 30 years old with a dark complexion. He is between 5 ft. 3 in. and 5 ft. 6 in. tall and weighs about 145-155 pounds. He was wearing a light-colored baseball cap in two of the photos. The police have urged CTA riders to be alert and to keep valuable jewelry in a purse or bag during their commute.

Comcast speeds up Internet Essentials

BY A STAFF WRITER HILADELPHIA, PA -- Comcast has announced several significant enhancements and milestones for Internet Essentials, the nation’s largest and most comprehensive high-speed Internet adoption program. The company said it planned to double the service’s download Internet speed, offer subscribers a Wi-Fi router for no additional cost, and conduct several pilot programs for low-income senior citizens. The announcements reaffirm Comcast’s commitment to help close the digital divide for low-income families and bring the transformative power of the Internet into more American homes. Since the program’s inception, Comcast has made 25 key enhancements to Internet Essentials, and this is the third time in four years Comcast has increased speeds for customers. The current speed is doubling to up to 10 Mbps downstream, which is enough to power multiple devices simultaneously. In addition, by offering Wi-Fi routers, customers will be able to connect any Internet-enabled device, including tablets and smartphones, which could help save money on monthly wireless bills. “We have made significant progress toward closing the digital divide for lowincome parents and children. In less than four years, Internet Essentials has

connected 500,000 families, or 2 million low-income Americans, to the power of the Internet at home,” said David L. Cohen, Comcast Corporation senior executive vice president and chief diversity officer. “With the increase in the program’s Internet speeds, the addition of Wi-Fi and a streamlined auto-enrollment process, more families will have even easier access to the Internet and its life-changing resources for education, employment, healthcare, communication, and entertainment.” The pilot program for low-income seniors is designed to better understand the unique challenges of helping them cross the digital divide and learn how to use the Internet. According to Pew Research Center, just 47 per cent, or less than half, of seniors (aged 65 and older) have high-speed Internet at home. When it comes to income level, only 25 per cent of seniors with household incomes below $30,000 have home broadband, compared to 82 per cent of seniors with household incomes at or above $75,000. The first pilot program will take

place in West Palm Beach, Florida, where Cohen was joined by City of West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio, Palm Beach County School District Superintendent Robert Avossa, and Urban League of Palm Beach County President and CEO Patrick J. Franklin to make the latest announcements. “Senior citizens can be an afterthought when it comes to addressing digital literacy and use of the Internet,” said Franklin. “However, the Internet has a tremendous power to help change their lives for the better by tearing down the walls that geography may have put between them and the ones they love. It can also help restore a sense of community and inclusion, bonds that can weaken as we grow older.” To receive the faster Internet speed, customers simply need to reboot their cable modems. Existing customers who would like a Wi-Fi router just need to call the dedicated call center and either request to have one shipped to them for free, or they can schedule a professional installation, also for no additional cost. New customers will have the option to receive a Wi-Fi router when they sign up. Missing Crystal Lake teen is still untraced BY A STAFF WRITER RYSTAL LAKE, IL -- The father of a 16-year-old Crystal Lake girl who went missing this week and is presumed to be with a 28-year-old man said he disagreed with a Crystal Lake police investigator’s presumption that his daughter was in no danger. Kalyani Sudhir, who was last seen on September 1, boarded a train in Crystal Lake after voluntarily leaving her home, according to a news release from Crystal Lake Police Cmdr. Tom Kotlowski. The police said Kalyani was last seen at 6 pm at Ogilvie Transportation Center in Chicago. Nair said he had been trying to obtain a court order to prevent Nainwal from

ACRAMENTO, CA -- Jagdeep Grewal was sworn in the north steps of the state Capitol as Sacramento’s first woman postmaster, according to the US Postal Service. The Indian American will oversee 1,004 employees who process and deliver mail on 537 city routes and 94 rural routes and fill nearly 20,000 postoffice boxes. Grewal, 57, began her career with the US Postal Service as a window clerk in 1988. She became a manager five years later and worked her way up the ranks, including a stint as postmaster in Pacifica-Daly City. Grewal received her bachelor’s degree in education and her master’s degree in language arts from Punjab University in India. The cash-strapped agency recently reported a net loss of $586 million this spring. The Postal Service has been battling a decline in mail volume due to consumer reliance on the Internet and private company package delivery.

BY A STAFF WRITER ILWAUKEE, WI -- An Indian American student at the University of WisconsinMilwaukee, V.V.N. Phani Babu Tiruveedhula, has discovered new compounds that can reduce an alcoholic’s impulse to drink. A new drug to help combat these urges could be ready for the market within five to six years. Scientists found in tests using rats bred to crave alcohol that the compounds drastically diminished drinking. In addition, the scientists observed limited side effects traditionally seen in alcoholism treatment drugs, such as depression and losing the ability to experience pleasure. The drugs also appeared to reduce anxiety in the rats who craved alcohol, but not the control rats. “Alcoholism is a major problem. We need a better treatment right now,” said Tiruveedhula, a graduate student at U.W. Milwaukee.

Diet-beverage consumers tend to compensate for the absence of calories in their drinks by noshing on extra food that is loaded with sugar, sodium, fat and cholesterol, the study said. “If people simply substitute diet beverages for sugar-sweetened beverages, it may not have the intended effect because they may just eat those calories rather than drink

lifestyle intervention in childhood can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases later in life. The “Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children” study (PANIC) carried out at University of Eastern Finland included 512 children aged six to eight years. The researchers found that chil-

dren whose physical fitness was better than that of their peers had a better arterial dilation capacity during physical exercise. Furthermore, the study showed that children with weak physical fitness combined with a high body fat percentage or low levels of physical activity also had the stiffest arteries. Moreover, higher arterial stiffness was also found in children with low levels of physical activity combined with a high body fat percentage. Children with the most physical activity or with the best physical fitness had the most flexible arteries and the best arterial dilation capacity. Another finding of the study is the association of better physical fitness with better arterial health, suggesting that especially regular, highintensity physical exercise can be beneficial for arterial health.
