Modi’s digital designs

Indian premier Narendra Modi’s visit to the Bay Area, home to large number of Indian techies, is designed to win support for his Digital India initiative ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

A

fter wowing Indian Americans on the East Coast and wooing US big business to ‘Make in India’ last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now out to win over the Silicon Valley for his Digital India initiative. The first Indian leader to visit California in more than 30 years later this month, Modi will go to Facebook for a town hall style question answer session and visit other top tech companies like Google and Adobe systems as also electric carmaker Tesla. As the Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has announced, the September 27 town hall at the company’s Menlo Park headquarters will “discuss how communities can work together to address social and economic challenges.” Modi, who has more Facebook fans than any politician except for

Migrant crisis high on Pope’s US visit agenda WASHINGTON: Europe’s spiralling migrant crisis will be at the centre of talks between Pope Francis and US president Barack Obama during the pontiff’s visit to Washington on September 23, the US administration said. The two leaders “will continue the dialogue begun in March 2014” when Obama made an official visit to the pope in the Vatican, AKI quoted the US administration as saying. Other issues on the agenda include assistance for the poor and marginalized, the protection of religious minorities, the White House said. Pope’s US visit will also include stops in New York and Philadelphia, where all 10,000 tickets to an open-air mass are already taken.

Barack Obama, is the first Indian prime minister to visit the Bay Area since Morarji Desai picked up an award at University of California, Berkeley in 1978 and Indira Gandhi visited Los Angeles in 1982. Besides meetings with Sundar Pichai and Shantanu Narayen, India

born chief executives of Google and Adobe respectively, he is also expected to attend events with Indian American entrepreneurs. At Tesla, more than the zero emissions cars that it makes, Modi may be interested in its “Powerwall”, a home battery that charges using

S Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry and India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will address a conclave of corporate America to kick off the first USIndia Strategic and Commercial Dialogue next week.

Besides them, other high-ranking government officials and captains of industry from both countries, will address the US-India Business Council’s 40th Annual Leadership Summit here on September 21. The largest bilateral trade association in America, USIBC is comprised of over 300 top-tier US and Indian companies advancing USIndia commercial ties. “It’s a privilege for USIBC to host government and business leaders from both countries on the eve of the US-India Strategic and Commercial Dialogue and on the occasion of the council’s 40th anniversary,” said USIBC chairman Ajay Banga.

Twitter war between Jindal and Trump escalates IANS, WASHINGTON

I

f long shot Indian American presidential candidate Bobby Jindal attacked Donald Trump to gain some media attention, the strategy seems to have worked with the Republican frontrunner joining him in a twitter war. After calling the real estate mogul “shallow,” a “narcissist and an egomaniac” and a “non-serious carnival act” at an event in the capital recently, the Louisiana governor launched a Twitter tirade

against Trump. Weighing in on Trump making fun of fellow Republican candidate Carly Fiorina’s looks, he told CBS News that the billionaire “should stop attacking other people’s appearances”. “I think it’s pretty outrageous for him to be attacking anybody’s appearance,” Jindal said, especially “when he looks like he’s got a squirrel sitting on his head”. Responding to Jindal’s slam of his hair, Trump took to Twitter sarcastically calling it “so original”.

electricity generated from solar panels, for India’s clean energy initiative. Modi’s visit to the Bay Area, home to a large number of Indian techies, is designed to win support for his Digital India initiative that aims to expand internet access, boost electronics manufacturing and develop apps to improve the delivery of government services. “The visit allows Modi to build relationships with tech firms that want to invest in India, while also fostering support from the Bay Area’s influential Indian-American community,” Venktesh Shukla, president of the Silicon Valley branch of NGO TiE, was quoted as saying by San Jose Mercury News. An Indian American group organizing a community reception for Modi at the 19,000-seat SAP Centre says that more than 45,000 people have registered for free passes. Modi would then fly back to New York for a summit with President Barack Obama on September 28.

US House votes against Iran n- deal WASHINGTON: The US House of Representatives voted against a resolution backing the nuclear agreement with Iran, in a symbolic vote started by congressional Republicans who object to the deal. The result of September 11 vote, however, would not stop President Barack Obama from implementing the international agreement, Xinhua reported. After hours of debate, the House voted 269 to 162 against the resolution. All but one Republicans voted against approval of the agreement. The 162 approving votes came from Democrats. Twenty-five Democrats also voted against approval of the deal. The House also voted 247-186 to disapprove Obama on lifting economic sanctions against Iran. Both bills were expected to be killed in the House as they would not be taken up by the Senate. Democrats in the Senate have already blocked a resolution disapproving the Iran deal, lending President Obama a major victory.

Republicans see Trump as their best bet: Poll

IANS, WASHINGTON

A

s rival Republican presidential candidates looked for ways of combating a surging Donald Trump, a new poll suggested that party supporters increasingly think he was their best bet for the 2016 presidential race. With confidence fading in traditional politicians like Jeb Bush and Wisconsin governor Scott Walker, 39 percent of Republican voters viewed Trump as their best shot at winning the presidency, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll. This compared with 26 percent who favored him in a CBS survey in August. Only 15 percent said they would not back him as the party’s nominee. Despite some reservations about Trump, the real estate mogul

appears to be gaining acceptance as a possible nominee, suggested the poll released on the eve of second presidential debate Wednesday at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. Neurosurgeon Ben Carson, another outsider, has also risen to 23 percent from just 6 percent early last month. Trump draws 27 percent support in the new poll, compared with 24 percent in August. Among Democrats, uneasiness with Hillary Clinton is growing and creating a possible opening for Vice President Joseph Biden, as he mulls a presidential run, the poll found. Her lead over self-proclaimed socialist Senator Bernie Sanders has shrunk from 41 percentage points to 20 points. Nearly six in 10 Democrats said they wanted to see Biden join the race.

Bihar Battle: NDA finalizes formula BJP gets lion’s share with 160 seats; Paswan’s LJP and Manjhi’s HAM get 40 and 20 seats respectively; alliance to fight in Modi’s leadership, CM to be decided later

Nominations for first phase begin

IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he National Democratic Alliance has finalized the seat-sharing arrangement for the Bihar assembly elections, with the BJP keeping the lion’s share of 160 seats, leaving 83 for its allies LJP, RLSP and HAM. It was also decided to contest the Bihar polls under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and let the chief minister be decided by winning legislators after the poll results are declared. The maximum of 40 seats were given to Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), followed by 23 seats to Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP) and 20 seats to former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM). Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah announced the seat-sharing agreement at a press conference here after reaching a consensus with Manjhi when the latter met him again at his residence on

NEWS DIGEST Patidars postpone ‘reverse Dandi Yatra’

AHMEDABAD: In a brief breather for the beleaguered Gujarat government, the agitating Patidars Anamat Andolan Samiti has postponed by two days its proposed 390-km long ‘reverse Dandi Yatra’ scheduled to begin from Navsari on September 13 morning. "We decided to honor the government's invitation for talks in (state capital) Gandhinagar,” PAAS state convenor Hardik Patel said.

Veterans threaten to scale up agitation NEW DELHI: The agitation by the ex-servicemen to press for ‘One Rank One Pension’ completed its 93rd day on Tuesday, and the protest leaders said a mega rally will be held on December 13 if the issue is not resolved by then. “We are going to scale up the agitation. There will be a series of rallies in Bihar, Punjab and Haryana, and a major rally in Delhi on December 13 if the issue is not resolved,” Maj. Gen. Satbir Singh (retd.), who has been spearheading the agitation, told IANS.

Despite differences among partners over seat sharing, the members are insisting that NDA is a united lot.

September 14 morning. Shah said that as per the agreement, some HAM candidates will fight on BJP tickets. Paswan, Manjhi and Kushwaha were also present at the meet. Shah refuted any differences among the NDA partners over seatsharing, expressing confidence of

winning two-thirds majority in the state. “There is no difference among us over seat sharing. We will fight the election under the leadership of (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi-ji and hope to win two-thirds majority,” Shah said. Soon after the announcement was

made, Paswan and Manjhi expressed their happiness over the seat-sharing arrangement and vowed to win the elections as a united face of the NDA. “I am very satisfied with the seat-sharing formula. Our only target is to unseat Nitish and Lalu from power,” Paswan told reporters.

Dengue deaths jolt Delhi govt into action IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he death of a child due to dengue allegedly because of apathy of hospitals — the second such case in a week — led Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to conduct surprise inspections of hospitals on September 15 and holding a meeting of his cabinet to discuss the possibility of an assembly session to frame a law to deal with “negligence” of private hospitals. The Delhi government also issued instructions to schools to ensure that for the next one month students come to classes wearing clothes which fully cover them irrespective of school uniforms.

Health Minister Satyendra Jain held meetings with officials of private hospitals and told them to increase the number of beds, admit dengue patients and not turn them away. He said government hospitals, if needed, can hold walk-in interviews to recruit more doctors and nurses to deal with the rush of

patients. According to data released till September 14 by the three civic corporations the number of deaths due to dengue was five and the total dengue cases reported in the city were 1,872. The family members of six-year-old Aman, who died on September 13, alleged that several hospitals declined him admission while the child was running up a fever. “We took him to Safdarjung Hospital but we were told that the boy was doing fine and there was no problem,” Aman’s father Manoj Sharma said. But Aman’s condition deteriorated that night.

Gujarat tops in ease of doing business in India IANS, WASHINGTON

W

orld Bank has ranked Gujarat as the top state in ease of doing business in India with a 71.14 percent score, followed by Andhra Pradesh (70.12 percent), Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh among the top five states. Sponsored by the Department of Industry Policy and Promotion (DIPP), the “Assessment of State Implementation of Business

Reforms report was prepared by World Bank in association with KPMG, CII and FICCI. Among the major states, West

Bengal occupied the 11th slot, Tamil Nadu (12th), Haryana (14th), Delhi (15th), Punjab (16th), Himachal Pradesh (17th), Kerala (18th), Goa (19th), Bihar (21st) and Assam (22nd). Arunachal Pradesh is ranked the last with 1.23 percent. The ranking of the states was based on eight specified parameters which include setting up of business, allotment of land, labour reforms and procedure for environmental clearance.

PATNA: The filing of nomination papers for the first phase of Bihar assembly elections, slated to be held on October 12, began on September 16, an official said. In the first phase, elections will be held in 49 of the 243 assembly constituencies. “The process for the five-phase assembly elections in Bihar has begun,” Additional Chief Electoral Officer R. Lakshamanan said here. The last date for filing nominations for this phase is September 23. While the scrutiny of papers will be held on September 24, candidates can withdraw their nominations till September 26. The constituencies going to polls in the first phase are in 10 districts of the state — including Begusarai, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Munger, Jamui and Samastipur.

India’s bid for UNSC seat gets a boost UNITED NATIONS: Boosting India’s efforts for a permanent Security Council seat, the UN General Assembly on September 14 endorsed a document that will be the basis for negotiations on reforming the Council and allowing the stalled process to make progress.

The Assembly adopted a decision by Assembly President Sam Kahamba Kutesa that sets out a negotiating text for the Council reform and calls for continuing the negotiations in the next session in a process known as Intergovernmental Negotiations. This marks a breakthrough in the long-stalled reform process because of a lack of negotiating text that can be the basis of discussions. India’s Permanent Representative Asoke Kumar Mukerji, welcoming the Assembly’s endorsement by consensus of Kutesa’s decision, said that the reform process is now “irreversible” and the adoption of Kutesa’s decision has changed the dynamics of the Council reform process. Mukerji said that Council reforms were essential.

Rahul not ready yet? With Rahul Gandhi showing no promise, the question which bothered the observers of the political scene in the 1960s — after Nehru, who ? — has returned to haunt the Congress today AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

T

he extension of Sonia Gandhi’s term as Congress president by another year in her 17th year in the position is an admission of the party’s failure to be a living, evolving, dynamic entity rather than an acknowledgement of her staying power and acceptability within the organization. Any political party in a democracy which adopts the norms of authoritarian regimes where leaders generally have life-long tenures merely exposes the pathetic paucity of talent within the outfit. In the Congress’s case, the resemblance with, say, a dictatorship like North Korea is strengthened by the fact that both the present leader and the already designated successor belong to the same family. The obsequious kowtowing to the two by Congressmen is also not dissimilar

to the meek submissiveness to the powers-that-be which characterizes totalitarian establishments. However, in addition to these unflattering similarities, there is another aspect of the Congress Working Committee decision on Sonia Gandhi which reflects poorly on the prospects of her son, the heirapparent, Rahul Gandhi. It is that he has obviously been found wanting in the internal assessments which preceded the move to enable his mother to continue as party chief. From this aspect, the fact that the crown prince remains where he was can be regarded as a blow to his prestige. Evidently, the 57-day sabbatical in a Buddhist monastery in Myanmar which was apparently expected to prepare him for greater responsibilities has not yielded the desired results. That even a party which apparently looks upon the Nehru-Gandhis as demi-gods found someone

with feet of clay in the family pantheon suggests that the formerly Grand Old Party hasn’t yet lost all sense of judgment, even if it cannot get rid of its feudal mindset. For Sonia Gandhi, however, the

For Sonia Gandhi, the latest crown of thorns can prove to be more prickly than ever. She is evidently not in the pink of health. If she has, nevertheless, accepted the onerous responsibility it is probably because of the “after me, the deluge” syndrome latest crown of thorns can prove to be more prickly than ever. For one, she is evidently not in the pink of health. If she has, nevertheless, accepted the onerous responsibility at a time when the Congress itself is not very healthy in political terms, it is probably because of the “after me, the deluge” syndrome which makes her unsure about the party’s future

grooming her son as the successor hasn’t yet borne fruit. Nor is there any surety that it will at the end of her extended run as the party chief next year. Therefore, the question which bothered the observers of the political scene in the 1960s — after Nehru, who ? — has returned to haunt the Congress today.

There is little doubt that the delay in his coronation will once again raise the question within the party of persuading an otherwise reluctant Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra to play a greater role, for a not inconsiderable section in the Congress believes that she is the answer to the party’s leadership problems. But Rahul Gandhi apparently resents these insinuations which is why she has chosen to remain in the background. Besides, her husband’s controversial business deals are a liability. The dynasty, which has been its mainstay, appears to be nearing the end of its run. It may remain formally in charge for some time, but its aura is fading. The party will have to brace itself, therefore, for a new leadership. In the 1960s, Lal Bahadur Shastri was the answer to the question: After Nehru, who ? There is no one on the horizon at present who can play such a role.

‘Meet the Patels’: In search of a desi bride WASHINGTON: It all began when Ravi Patel, a 30-year-old Indian-American investment banker turned Hollywood actor, pestered by his parents on a long flight to India to get married, agreed to search for his bride the “desi” way. And Ravi’s sister Geeta, just out of making a war zone documentary about Kashmir, now learning to handle the camera, started filming “half seriously” the “family affair” to find a desi partner for Ravi, who had just broken with his white girlfriend of two years. How what began as a family vacation video eventually turned into a hilarious romantic documentary about arranged marriages is an equally heartbreaking story as the sibling codirectors of Meet the Patels relate it. “When we got to India, Ravi realized that what he was going through is what so many people have gone through,” the duo told IANS on phone ahead of its release in New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles. It opens in additional US markets including Washington DC, Boston, New Jersey, Philadelphia,

North Carolina, Detroit, and Tampa on September 18. “He felt so many people were living that story and yet no one had told it properly,” said Geeta who was equally under parental pressure to get married. Many a film and media shows

“depict arranged marriages and semiarranged marriages in Indian culture more like a joke - like parents are weird, that kind of thing”. “We didn’t see it that way. We felt like our parents (married through this ‘desi’ system) were the happiest

people we knew,” Geeta said. “We were kind of torn because we wanted that happiness, but we didn’t know what process was really good for us to get there.” The conversion of the home video into a documentary “just happened by accident,” said Ravi. “It was just kind of natural evolution” with “Mom and Dad breathing down our necks as if a billion people in India care as much as they do about why we are not married.” But despite some shaky camera work, they never thought of reshooting the film. “The documentary is so authentic and real, what happened at the moment,” according to them. “The only stuff that we put a lot of effort was in producing animated moments,” said Ravi. But how come their parents did not appear camera conscious at all. “I know that’s crazy, right. It was so natural,” said Ravi. “Part of it is that they never thought this project would really amount to anything - partially because

of the casual way we were shooting it.” The brother and sister team spent six years in making the film and at the end of it “nobody wanted it”. What kept them going was “Pride”, said Ravi. “I believed in it. Even if no body watches it, I am going to be proud that I made something I like and that mattered to me.” “Geeta and I have all our crazy fits. But when you are working with your sister you can’t fire her. So you have to find a way to keep it going and make it work.” “We have to make a commitment,” added Geeta. “As dad says in the movie, life is a commitment.” And after all the fights and disagreements “we have this incredible relationship we would never have dreamt of.” So what comes next? Are they planning another joint venture on one more desi issue? “Geeta and I are working on some projects together - some pretty exciting stuff,” said Ravi though he would not say what it was.

Mistrial in Patel assault case

US District Judge Madeline Hughes Haikala declares mistrial after 12-person jury trying police officer Eric Parker says they could not reach a verdict IANS, WASHINGTON

A

US judge has declared a mistrial in the federal trial of an Alabama police officer who slammed an Indian grandfather walking in his son’s neighborhood leaving the 57year-old man partially paralysed. The police officer, Eric Parker, 26, was charged with violating the civil rights under color of law of Sureshbhai Patel during an incident on February 6, just six days after he had arrived from India to take care of his grandson. US District Judge Madeline Hughes Haikala declared mistrial after 12-person jury trying Parker in a Huntsville, Alabama federal court informed her that they could not reach a verdict — which must be unanimous, AL.com reported. Based on the final note the jury sent to Haikala, no jury changed their position since deliberations began

anew when an alternate juror was added on September 10 morning. Altogether, the new jury deliberated about 10 hours. Prosecutor Robert Posey said the US government will try the case against Parker again. “We plan to re-try the case and so another jury will get a chance to see

this evidence and hear the testimony,” Posey said. “We will let them decide.” The Patel family, through attorney Hank Sherrod, declined to comment on the mistrial in an email to AL.com. A re-trial won’t be far in the future. Posey said federal law mandates the trial begin within

70 days, unless one side asks for a delay and it’s granted by the judge. “Our team is going to go back and huddle up and review, as you might expect, everything that we’ve done and see if there’s anything we want to change,” Posey said. “We were able to introduce all of our evidence. The jury got a chance to hear from the defendant. We’ll just look forward to the next time,” he said. “Obviously some of them saw things our way and some of them didn’t. At the end of the day, we come back and try it again. We’ll see how that goes,” said Parker’s attorney, Robert Tuten. The case has drawn international attention after video of the take down of Patel went viral. Alabama Governor Robert Bentley issued an apology to the government of India for the incident. He described the actions taken by Parker as “excessive force”.

The racially-motivated attack occurred when Inderjit Singh Mukker was on his way to a grocery store night. A man in a car passing by his vehicle allegedly started abusing Mukker by calling him “Terrorist!” and “Bin Laden!” and yelled “Go back to your country!”. After continuous tailgating,

Twitter hashtag to fight racial attacks in United States IANS, NEW YORK

A

n Indian American woman has created #AfterSeptember11 on micro-blogging site Twitter to speak up against the racial attacks Indians have been facing in the US after the September 11 terror attacks. The hashtag was created by Jessica Talwar, a 19-year-old political science student from Loyola University in Chicago who tweets as @jesstalwar, the Los Angeles Times reported on Friday. The #AfterSeptember11 began trending since September 10 night — the day it was created — with over 50,000 victims telling their sto-

ries using it. The victims said they were targeted for being Muslim — or often, just for having brown skin. Many of the victims were chil-

dren during the attacks on the Trade Towers but their tweets reflect the impact of the racial abuse on their young lives.

One said her father shaved his face and stopped wearing a turban after he was assaulted at work. “America needs to recognize that the trauma and repercussions of these attacks were not confined to the day of September 11, 2001 itself,” Talwar wrote in an email to Los Angeles Times. “Desis, Arabs, and Muslims have felt the impact of this day for 14 years,” she said. Indian American poet Hari Kondabolu echoed Talwar’s views and wrote “his mother put the US flag on their house because she feared that people would throw rocks through the window”.

A continued stream of arrivals came via cars, buses and taxis, largely from the east of Austria. INDIA CREATES HISTORY AT US OPEN

W

omen’s doubles top seeds Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis defeated fourth seeded Casey Dellacqua and Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 6-3 here to claim the US Open title. The Indo-Swiss pair took only 69 minutes to conquer the Australian-Kazakh pair at the Arthur Ashe stadium. It was Sania and Martina’s second women’s doubles Grand Slam title together after winning the Wimbledon earlier this year and they played with supreme confidence to win the tournament without dropping a set. It was Sania’s fifth success at the Majors (two women’s doubles and three mixed doubles crowns). Sania’s partnership with Martina has helped her become the first Indian women’s player to be ranked World No. 1 in doubles rankings. Sunday’s final was Sania’s first in the category here at US Open. She won the mixed doubles title last year with Brazilian Bruno Soares. The top seeds quickly jumped to a 3-1 lead breaking the second ser-

Sania-Martina though remained undeterred to bring about the third and fourth successive service breaks to extend their advantage to 5-2. Sania then served out the first set at 6-3 in only 31 minutes. merican boxer Floyd Mayweather claimed a points victory over challenger Andre Berto to win 49 consecutive bouts here. Mayweather, the defending World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight titles, secured a unanimous 120-108, 118-110 and 117111 verdict from the judges at the MGM Grand. With the win, Mayweather equalled legend Rocky Marciano’s career record of 49-0. His challenger Berto, 32, was a two-time welterweight champion and approached the fight having lost three of his 33 professional bouts. Floyd Mayweather (pic) declared that Saturday’s fight was his last appearance in the ring. “My career is over, that’s official,” the five-weight world cham-

points. Dellacqua-Shvedova could only break their opponents once. As the match went on, the top seeds grew more confident and started unleashing terrific ground strokes, both cross court and down the line, to march towards victory. “To win Wimbledon was a great year. Then to come back and back it up to win the US Open, we feel like we’re a really solid team. And we came through again today.”

I

ndian tennis ace Leander Paes clinched his 17th Grand Slam crown by winning the US Open mixed doubles title with Swiss partner Martina Hingis here. The fourth seeded Indo-Swiss pair, defeated unseeded Americans Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sam Querrey 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 in a tricky final which lasted for one hour and seventeen minutes. The pair broke their opponent at love to take a 2-1 lead in the opening set as the Swiss hit a forehand passing shot to secure the break. That bit of momentum was all they needed, as Paes easily closed the set out at 5-4 when

Hingis hit a volley winner. A lone break of serve also decided the second set, as Mattek-Sands hit two straight winners to break Hingis’ serve as the Americans led 3-1. Hingis saved three set points on her serve at 25, but Querrey easily held in the next game to send the contest into a deciding super tiebreak. The crucial point of the match came at 7-7, when Paes blocked Querrey’s serve for a clean passing-shot winner. He then won both points on his serve to close out the match. With this title, 42-year-old Paes is the first man to pocket nine mixed doubles title, surpassing former doubles partner Mahesh Bhupathi, who has eight.

S

pion Mayweather was quoted as saying by bbc.com. Mayweather, 38, is widely regarded as the greatest fighter of his generation. “You’ve got to know when to hang them up. I’m close to 40 now. There’s nothing left to prove in the sport of boxing. Now I just want to spend time with my family.”

erbian star Novak Djokovic vanquished Roger Federer in a four-set battle to clinch the men’s singles title at the US Open here. The top seeded Djokovic survived a strong fightback from the Swiss veteran to carve out a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory in three hours and 20 minutes at Flushing Meadows this weekend. Djokovic thus claimed the 10th Glam Slam title of his career. This was the third Glam Slam title of the season for Djokovic. The Serbian ace had clinched the Australian Open and Wimbledon earlier this year. The match was delayed by three hours due to rain. Djokovic suffered a fall during the opening set, badly scraping his arm and leg. But when the world number one

regained his composure, he quickly asserted his dominance, breaking Federer’s serve six times and saving 19 of 23 break points to battle his way to his 27th win in 28 Grand Slam matches this year. Federer managed to hold serve on that occasion, but could not fight off another three break chances on his next service game

as Djokovic made the breakthrough to take a 2-1 lead. With the 23,000-strong crowd firmly behind him, Federer fought back in the second set. The top seed kept up the momentum in the third set and finally moved stronger in the last set. Djokovic stood firm, seeing off Federer on championship point.

Therefore, I’m not consciously taking efforts to blend in to the mega family. I admit I get more offers because I come from this family, but eventually the audience will judge me based on my work,” Sai told IANS. “Just because I come from some popular family, audiences are not going to shower love when I do a bad film. She spoke at length about her love for horror cinema. This enabled us to connect with the vision of the film easily; helped us to be on the same page while working,” Ashwin told IANS. He also said that Nayantara’s image as an actor helped the film to great extent. “More than her image as a star, it’s her actor’s image that audiences will get to see in the film. Her performance really enhanced the film and I thoroughly enjoyed working with her,” said Saravanan, who considers Nayantara a “t h o r o u g h professional”. Unlike the

If the story is good, I believe everything else automatically falls in place,” said Sai, who feels lucky to have worked with director Harish Shankar. “To even consider working with a newcomer after delivering a blockbuster like Gabbar Singh means a lot to me. It’s not every day you get to work with a director who feels responsible for your growth and career,” he said. Sai believes Harish works with a “never settle” attitude. “If I’m to deliver 60 percent of what he expects from his actors, I feel that’s more than enough. But Harish ensured that I gave my 100 percent for every shot. He never compromises,” he said. “He feels there’s always room to do more when we’ve settled with something. Since I come from the mega family, he felt more responsible and badly wanted me to prove myself as an actor,” he added.

‘Yatchan’ - Promising yet disappointing Film: Yatchan; Language: Tamil; Director: Vishnuvardhan; Cast: Arya, Krishna Kulasekaran, Deepa Sannidhi, Swathi Reddy, Adil Hussain, Thambi Ramaiah, RJ Balaji, Ponvannan and S.J Suryah; Rating: **

O

n paper, the premise of Yatchan — a story about two guys whose lives are swapped by an accident when they cross paths — sounds so promising. But on screen, it isn’t half as promising because it’s a film that doesn’t take itself too seriously. There’s lot of black comedy, in the most serious scenes and at the most unexpected junctures of the film. Take the scene where Krishna accidentally boards the car that’s waiting for Arya for instance. Krish-

na plays an aspiring actor; Krishna is mistaken for a paid killer, and the car he boards takes him to a market where he’s asked to kill someone. It’s a series of accidents that brings Arya and Krishna together. Their lives cross paths over their love for cinema. And that’s precisely why

they come to Chennai; the heart of Tamil cinema. Yatchan works in bits and pieces, but never on the whole. Even with an interesting premise, it’s disappointing that the film ends so predictably. —Haricharan Pudipeddi

scar-winning composer A.R. Reacting to fatwa being issued against him over the film the musician refrained from sharing his “spiritual experiences” of working on the film as it’s something “personal” to him. “This letter is for all those people, who have been aware of the recent events concerning me. ‘Hunger strike is no solution’ IANS, NEW DELHI

A

s the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) logjam over the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as its chairman continues, the BJP member and actor says students should not go on hunger strike, but have a dialogue to come up with a solution. The prolonged strike against Chauhan’s appointment as the chairman of FTII entered its 95th day on September 14. And students of the Pune-based institute

are now sitting on a hunger strike since September 10. “Hunger strike is no solution. I request them to have a dialogue with the minister or the ministry officially. Only then a solution can come out,” Chauhan said.

ith the premise that is spelt through the dialogue, “Ek goonda, kya ek IG ki beti se pyaar kar sakta hai”, you expect the plot, which is a remake of Subhash Ghai’s superhit film of the same name, to be gripping. But director Nikhil Advani’s version, is a far cry from the original. If it was the music and songs that made Subhash Ghai’s 1983 film Hero a superhit and a runaway success, it is the performance by the lead cast that makes Nikhil Advani’s film bearable. Sooraj Pancholi plays the mobster with a strong character, Sooraj Kaushik, who is indebted to his godfather Pasha, whom he lovingly calls “Baba”. And Athiya Shetty plays Radha, the Inspector General of Police, Shrikant Mathur’s daughter who is in love with Sooraj. While their onscreen chemistry is perfunctory, they seem earnest and promising. They make a sincerely charming and self-assured pair. With a well-chiselled physique, Sooraj appears to be a bit reticent and camera shy, whereas Athiya, is poised and confidence personified.

Also the direction, with scant regard to detailing, is careless and without conviction. Thus, making the entire viewing experience a silly proposition. With excellent production values, Advani’s film, though technically advanced, is poorly executed in terms of writing. The characters, without much thought given into their back-stories, are shallow and underdeveloped. And the screenplay is ridiculously flawed and confusing at times. Overall, this Hero is a below mediocre fare except for the lead pair’s straight-forward performances. —Troy Ribeiro

Seven Indians charged in multi-million dollar liquor store sales tax fraud sweep BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL — Attorney General Lisa Madigan today announced charges against seven Chicago liquor store operators as part of a sweep to crack down on sales tax evasion and interstate liquor bootlegging. “Operation Seven & Seven” is a joint effort with the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) to investigate and prosecute untaxed or “bootlegged” liquor brought in from outside Illinois. The charges are the result of a twoyear criminal tax investigation conducted by IDOR’s Criminal Investigations Division. The investigation culminated with the execution of search warrants at seven Chicago liquor stores, earning it the nickname “Operation Seven & Seven.” Madigan charged seven defendants today in Cook County Circuit Court with sales tax evasion of more than $100,000, a Class 1 felony punishable by up to four to 15 years in prison. One additional defendant – Dipakkumar Patel – was charged with sales tax evasion of more than $10,000, a Class 2 felony punishable by up to three to seven years in prison. Between July 2010 and December 2013,

Madigan alleged, the seven defendants collectively defrauded the state out of more than $3.5 million in sales taxes. Madigan filed charges against the following nine individuals: 4 Cherag Patel, 39, of South Bend, IN: AB Food and Liquor; 4 Dipakkumar Patel, 41, of Munster, IN: Jeff ’s Food and Liquor; 4 Jiggarkumar Patel, 37, of Schaumburg, IL: AB Food and Liquor; 4 Mukesh Patel, 62, of Des Plaines, IL: Buddy’s Wine & Spirits; 4 Nishant Patel, 33, of Des Plaines, IL: Liquors Galore (doing business as Maple Park Wine & Spirits), Buddy’s Wine & Spirits, and Madison Food and Spirits; 4Rajanikant Patel, 44, of Hoffman Estates, IL: Quickstop Food and Liquor; 4Vishal Patel, 31, of Des Plaines, Illinois: Buddy’s Wine & Spirits; and Today’s arrests are part of a concentrated effort between Attorney General office and the Department of Revenue to crack down on tax evasion and illegal interstate liquor sales. “The transfer of alcohol into the state of Illinois from unlicensed sources is

an issue that carries both criminal and tax implications,” said Connie Beard, Illinois Department of Revenue director. Five of those charged were arrested by IDOR special agents, with the assistance of the Bridgeview and Palos Hills Police Departments, yesterday morning on no-bond warrants, and the remaining defendants later surrendered to authorities. All seven defendants are scheduled to appear in bond court this afternoon. Attorney General office has worked to improve the state’s ability to pursue businesses and retailers who avoid paying sales taxes by initiating legislation that became law in 2013. The law created the crime of sales tax evasion and imposed stronger, graduated penalties based on the amount of sales taxes evaded. Operation Seven & Seven is the first of its kind since the law was implemented. The cases were investigated by IDOR’s Criminal Investigations Division. Senior Assistant Attorney General Lori Jordan and Assistant Attorneys General Victor Turla and Claire Lusher are handling the cases for Madigan’s Special Prosecutions Bureau. The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Comcast speeds up Internet Essentials

BY A STAFF WRITER HILADELPHIA, PA -- Comcast has announced several significant enhancements and milestones for Internet Essentials, the nation’s largest and most comprehensive high-speed Internet adoption program. The company said it planned to double the service’s download Internet speed, offer subscribers a Wi-Fi router for no additional cost, and conduct several pilot programs for low-income senior citizens. The announcements reaffirm Comcast’s commitment to help close the digital divide for low-income families and bring the transformative power of the Internet into more American homes. Since the program’s inception, Comcast has made 25 key enhancements to Internet Essentials, and this is the third time in four years Comcast has increased speeds for customers. The current speed is doubling to up to 10 Mbps downstream, which is enough to power multiple devices simultaneously. In addition, by offering Wi-Fi routers, customers will be able to connect any Internet-enabled device, including tablets and smartphones, which could help save money on monthly wireless bills. “We have made significant progress toward closing the digital divide for lowincome parents and children. In less than four years, Internet Essentials has

P

connected 500,000 families, or 2 million low-income Americans, to the power of the Internet at home,” said David L. Cohen, Comcast Corporation senior executive vice president and chief diversity officer. “With the increase in the program’s Internet speeds, the addition of Wi-Fi and a streamlined auto-enrollment process, more families will have even easier access to the Internet and its life-changing resources for education, employment, healthcare, communication, and entertainment.” The pilot program for low-income seniors is designed to better understand the unique challenges of helping them cross the digital divide and learn how to use the Internet. According to Pew Research Center, just 47 per cent, or less than half, of seniors (aged 65 and older) have high-speed Internet at home. When it comes to income level, only 25 per cent of seniors with household incomes below $30,000 have home broadband, compared to 82 per cent of seniors with household incomes at or above $75,000. The first pilot program will take

place in West Palm Beach, Florida, where Cohen was joined by City of West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio, Palm Beach County School District Superintendent Robert Avossa, and Urban League of Palm Beach County President and CEO Patrick J. Franklin to make the latest announcements. “Senior citizens can be an afterthought when it comes to addressing digital literacy and use of the Internet,” said Franklin. “However, the Internet has a tremendous power to help change their lives for the better by tearing down the walls that geography may have put between them and the ones they love. It can also help restore a sense of community and inclusion, bonds that can weaken as we grow older.” To receive the faster Internet speed, customers simply need to reboot their cable modems. Existing customers who would like a Wi-Fi router just need to call the dedicated call center and either request to have one shipped to them for free, or they can schedule a professional installation, also for no additional cost. New customers will have the option to receive a Wi-Fi router when they sign up. Through Internet Essentials, Comcast has invested more than $240 million in cash and in-kind support to help fund digital literacy and readiness training and education, reaching nearly 3.2 million people through national and local nonComEd showed its community spirit in both the India and Pakistan Independence Parades in West Rogers Park. On Saturday, August 15 the ComEd float and volunteers took part in the India Independence Day Parade. The India Day Parade showcased India`s rich and diverse culture with several floats, along with a variety of Indian cuisine, arts, apparel and jewelry. The following day, ComEd volunteers were back on the Northside for the Pakistan Parade and participated in the festival afterward in Warren Park. Kalyani Sudhir, who was last seen on September 1, boarded a train in Crystal Lake after voluntarily leaving her home, according to a news release from Crystal Lake Police Cmdr. Tom Kotlowski. The police said Kalyani was last seen at 6 pm at Ogilvie Transportation Center in Chicago. Kalyani might be with Nithin Nainwal, a 28-year-old who, the police said, might have a black 2008 Hyundai with a license plate reading “V596324.” Ko t l ow s k i d i d n o t k n ow t h e relationship between Kalyani and

Nainwal, but said friends and family suggested it was possible they were together. Kotlowski said he did not believe Kalyani was in danger. But Sudhir Nair of Crystal Lake said he had been frustrated with the response from Crystal Lake police since July when he said he told them he believed his daughter had a relationship with Nainwal, who once worked at Nair’s gas station. Nair said he had been trying to obtain a court order to prevent Nainwal from

contacting his underage daughter. But Nair said Nainwal was an undocumented immigrant and had been difficult to find so that court papers could be served. “Now she is missing, and the police say she is safe. How can they say that?” an emotional Nair said. “He has kidnapped her – not physically, but mentally.” Nair said his daughter was a Crystal Lake South High School student who got good grades but did not have any friends, which was why he said he was particularly concerned about the influence a 28-yearold man, who had been speaking to her since the spring, could have on her. Nair said he fired Nainwal from his gas station in early July when he learnt about the potential relationship he had with the girl. The police said Kalyani was 5 feet 1 inch tall and weighed about 125 pounds, adding that she had black hair and brown eyes.

Indian is named first female post-master

S

Jagdeep Grewal

ACRAMENTO, CA -- Jagdeep Grewal was sworn in the north steps of the state Capitol as Sacramento’s first woman postmaster, according to the US Postal Service. The Indian American will oversee 1,004 employees who process and deliver mail on 537 city routes and 94 rural routes and fill nearly 20,000 postoffice boxes. Grewal, 57, began her career with the US Postal Service as a window clerk in 1988. She became a manager five years later and worked her way up the ranks, including a stint as postmaster in Pacifica-Daly City. Grewal received her bachelor’s degree in education and her master’s degree in language arts from Punjab University in India. The cash-strapped agency recently reported a net loss of $586 million this spring. The Postal Service has been battling a decline in mail volume due to consumer reliance on the Internet and private company package delivery.

Indian students’ bid to guide startups BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- IndianAmerican students Aman Sharma and Bhavin Gupta have created an incubator for startup businesses to help budding entrepreneurs get their businesses off the ground for free. “We hope to be an inspiration to younger students who want to pursue a career in business and entrepreneurship. They may not know how to run a business, but they are intelligent and motivated and have done extensive research on the subject”, says the duo. The two have kept their goal simple. They hope within a year to have startups calling them instead of the other way around. The Indian-origin students are on their school’s debate team and Gupta plans to join Sharma on the school business club soon.

Indian student shows the way : alcoholism

V.V.N.Phani Babu Triuveedhula

BY A STAFF WRITER ILWAUKEE, WI -- An Indian American student at the University of WisconsinMilwaukee, V.V.N. Phani Babu Tiruveedhula, has discovered new compounds that can reduce an alcoholic’s impulse to drink. A new drug to help combat these urges could be ready for the market within five to six years. Scientists found in tests using rats bred to crave alcohol that the compounds drastically diminished drinking. In addition, the scientists observed limited side effects traditionally seen in alcoholism treatment drugs, such as depression and losing the ability to experience pleasure. The drugs also appeared to reduce anxiety in the rats who craved alcohol, but not the control rats. “Alcoholism is a major problem. We need a better treatment right now,” said Tiruveedhula, a graduate student at U.W. Milwaukee.

Indian scientists decode Tulsi genome

Diet drinks won’t make you slimmer Switching to sugar-free drinks may not help control your weight if you do not pay attention to what you eat IANS, NEW YORK

I

f you are trying to shed some extra kilos, switching to sugarfree drinks may not really help, said a study. Diet-beverage consumers tend to compensate for the absence of calories in their drinks by noshing on extra food that is loaded with sugar, sodium, fat and cholesterol, the study said. “If people simply substitute diet beverages for sugar-sweetened beverages, it may not have the intended effect because they may just eat those calories rather than drink

them,” said researcher Ruopeng An, professor at University of Illinois in the US. Switching to diet or sugar-free drinks may not help people control their weight if they do not pay attention to the quantity and quality of the foods they consume, An said. The study examined the dietary habits of more than 22,000 US adults. An compared participants’ daily calorie intakes, including their consumption of energy-dense but nutrient-poor discretionary foods that include products such as cookies, ice cream, chocolate, fries and pastries, and five types of beverages

— diet drinks, sugar-sweetened beverages such as sodas and fruit drinks, coffee, tea and alcohol. While coffee and diet-beverage drinkers consumed fewer total calories each day than people who preferred alcohol or sugary drinks, they obtained a greater percentage of their daily calorie intake from discretionary foods, An said. “It may be that people who consume diet beverages feel justified in eating more, so they reach for a muffin or a bag of chips,” An said. “Or perhaps, in order to feel satisfied, they feel compelled to eat more of these high-calorie foods,” he said.

Sowdhamini said, “This is the first report of draft genome sequencing of a plant species from NCBS and we hope to do more”.

EATING FISH DAILY CAN Sedentary lifestyle bad for kids CURB DEPRESSION TOO LONDON: Eating a lot of fish may help curb the risk of depression in both men and women, reveals a pooled analysis of the available evidence. After pooling all the European data together, a significant association emerged between those eating the most fish and a 17 percent reduction in depression risk compared with those eating the least. When the researchers looked specifically at gender, they found a slightly stronger association between high fish consumption and lowered depression risk in men. Among women, the associated reduction in depression risk was 16

percent. “Higher fish consumption may be beneficial in the primary prevention of depression,” the authors noted. Several previous studies have looked at the possible role of dietary factors in modifying depression risk, but the findings have been inconsistent and inconclusive. “The high-quality protein, vitamins, and minerals found in fish may help stave off depression while eating a lot of fish may be an indicator of a healthy and more nutritious diet,” the researchers suggested. Depression affects an estimated 350 million people worldwide.

L

ow levels of physical activity, weaker physical fitness and obesity may lead to arterial stiffness, a sign of cardiovascular diseases, even in primary school children, says a study. The findings suggest that a

lifestyle intervention in childhood can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases later in life. The “Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children” study (PANIC) carried out at University of Eastern Finland included 512 children aged six to eight years. The researchers found that chil-

dren whose physical fitness was better than that of their peers had a better arterial dilation capacity during physical exercise. Furthermore, the study showed that children with weak physical fitness combined with a high body fat percentage or low levels of physical activity also had the stiffest arteries. Moreover, higher arterial stiffness was also found in children with low levels of physical activity combined with a high body fat percentage. Children with the most physical activity or with the best physical fitness had the most flexible arteries and the best arterial dilation capacity. Another finding of the study is the association of better physical fitness with better arterial health, suggesting that especially regular, highintensity physical exercise can be beneficial for arterial health.
