Donald Trump cancels US delegation to Davos The US President cancels his delegations trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos due to the ongoing government shutdown IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump has canceled his delegations trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, due to the ongoing partial government shutdown. “Out of consideration for the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay and to ensure his team can assist as needed, President Trump has canceled his Delegation’s trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland,” CNBC News quoted press secretary Sarah Sanders as saying in a late Thursday statement. Earlier this week, the White House said it had planned to send Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Chris Liddell, assistant to the president and deputy chief of staff for policy

BRIEFS ‘Trump told me to have polls rigged’ NEW YORK: US President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen has said that he paid the head of a small technology company thousands in 2015 to rig online polls at “the direction of and for the sole benefit of” Trump. Cohen was responding to a report that he paid John Gauger, the owner of RedFinch Solutions LLC, between $12,000 and $13,000 for activities, including “trying unsuccessfully to manipulate two online polls in Trump’s favor”.

Trump to expand US missile defense WASHINGTON: Donald Trump has unveiled at Pentagon this year’s Missile Defense Review which contains the country’s intention to expand its missile defence capabilities. “The US will adjust its position to defend against any missile strikes to include cruise and hypersonic,” Trump said. “The world is changing. tion 4.0: Shaping a Global Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution”. Also on Thursday, the President postponed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s planned overseas trip with other members of Congress, shortly before they were scheduled to depart on a military plane. The postponement came a day after the California Democrat sent Trump a letter, urging him to either reschedule his January 29 State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress or deliver it in writing. A White House official told NBC News that all congressional delegations overseas that would have used federally funded military aircraft have been grounded by Trump until the shutdown ends. The shutdown entered its 27th day on Thursday as Trump and Pelosi remained at loggerheads on the issue of the President’s border wall.

n a tit-for-tat move, US President Donald Trump cancelled House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s planned trip to three countries, a day after she angered Republicans by suggesting the President should delay his State of the Union Asdress due to the impasse over the ongoing partial government shutdown. Hours before Pelosi and top Democrats were set to depart on Thursday to Afghanistan, Belgium and Egypt, Trump released a letter cancelling what he termed a “public relations event”, reports The Washington Post. “Due to the shutdown, I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt, and Afghanistan has been postponed,” he wrote. “I also feel that, during this period, it would be better if you were in Washington negotiating with me and joining the Strong Border Security movement to end the shutdown. “We will reschedule this sevenday excursion when the shutdown is over. “Obviously, if you would like to

make your journey by flying commercial, that would certainly be your prerogative,” the President added. The President’s letter to Pelosi followed one she wrote to him on Wednesday suggesting him to postpone his State of the Union address, set for January 29, if the partial government shutdown does not end this week, citing security concerns because of Secret Service and other personnel who are working without pay. Just as Pelosi pointed to security

officials working without pay as a reason to delay his State of the Union address, Trump said he was postponing Pelosi’s trip “in light of the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay”. Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill responded to Trump’s letter pointing out the President’s own shutdown trip to Iraq as well as one by Republican lawmakers, reports CNN. “The purpose of the trip was to express appreciation and thank our men and women in uniform for

their service and dedication, and to obtain critical national security and intelligence briefings from those on the front lines,” Hammill tweeted on Thursday night. He said the stop in Brussels was also to have included meetings with NATO leadership. Democrats also responded angrily to the move. Some Republicans also condemned the move. “One sophomoric response does not deserve another,” Senator Lindsey Graham, a top Republican ally of the President’s, wrote in a statement. Senator John Cornyn, a member of Republican leadership, bemoaned “too much childishness” in the shutdown fight between Trump and Pelosi.

Doing business in India now easier India now one of the most open countries for FDI with over 90 per cent approvals put on the automatic route, says Narendra Modi IANS, GANDHINAGAR

BJP promises Budget 2019 will bring relief to farmers

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that his government had made doing business in India easier, cheaper, faster and smarter with his term accounting for almost 45 per cent of the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) that the country received in the last 18 years. Speaking at the inaugural function of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2019 here, he said India was now one of the most open countries for FDI with over 90 per cent approvals put on the automatic route. “In the last four years, we have received FDI worth $263 billion. This is 45 per cent of the FDI received in last 18 years,” Modi told the gathering. He said India was among the top 10 FDI destinations. Modi, who is on a three-day visit to his home state to throw open his pet biennial Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, said the India of today was a land of “immense opportunities” being the only place that offered democracy, demography and demand. “Fifty cities in India are ready to build metro rail systems. We have to build 50 million houses. The requirement of road, rail and waterways is enormous. We want world class technologies to achieve our goal in a faster and cleaner way. India is thus, a land of immense opportunities.” he said. The Prime Minister said the

challenge for India, as in most emerging economies, was to grow horizontally as well as vertically to ensure that the benefits of development spread to regions and communities that have lagged behind while also meeting enhanced expectations in terms of quality of life, quality of services and quality of infrastructure. “We are well aware that our achievements, here in India, will directly impact one sixth of humanity.” Modi said his government had removed the barriers which were preventing India from achieving its full potential and now it was ready for business like never before. The government has made doing business easier. cheaper, faster and smarter, he said. “In the last four years, we have

jumped 65 places in the global ranking of World Bank’s Doing Business Report. From 142 in 2014 to 77 now, but we are still not satisfied. I have asked my team to work harder so that India is in the top 50 next year. “We have also made doing business cheaper. The historic implementation of Goods and Services Tax and other measures of simplification and consolidation of taxes have reduced transaction costs and made processes efficient. “We have also made doing business faster through digital processes, online transactions and single point inter-faces,” he said. He said his government had made doing business smarter by insisting on IT based transactions and digital payments including direct transfer of government benefits.

NEW DELHI: Rejecting the farm loan waiver as a permanent solution, the BJP on Friday said that the Center will announce relief measures in Budget 2019 that will boost farmers economically. Addressing a press conference, the Bharatiya Janata Party farmer’s cell chief Virendra Singh Mast said that the party would also hold a two-day national convention for farmers in February in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur, which would be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “We have sent several requests to the government regarding farmers. In coming Budget you can see it’s reflection,” he said. “The Modi government has taken

Modi added that he understood that being a young nation, India needs to create job opportunities and better infrastructure, which are both linked with investments. “Therefore, in recent years, there has been unprecedented focus on manufacturing and infrastructure,” he said. Listing the achievements of his government, he said for the first time, India had become a net exporter of electricity, had installed transmission lines at an unprecedented pace and had doubled the speed of road construction with

historical steps to improve the condition of the farmers and in the coming days some decisions will be taken to economically strengthen them,” Mast, an MP from Bhadohi in Uttar Pradesh said. He, however, did not disclose what kind of measures the Centre was likely to announce. Asked about agrarian unrest and the Congress’ promise of loan waiver that worked for it in the recently concluded Assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh where the BJP was ousted from power, he said that loan waiver is not a permanent solution but a temporary arrangement. —IANS

rural road connectivity now at 90 per cent. “At 7.3 per cent, the average GDP growth, over the entire term of our government, has been the highest of any Indian government since 1991. At the same time, the rate of inflation at 4.6 per cent is the lowest for any Indian government since 1991, when India began its process of liberalisation,” he said. Modi had conceptualised the summit as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2003 to position the state as an ideal investment destination after the 2002 riots.

city to receive international guests. The Central Public Works Department, the Centre’s construction agency under the Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, has been roped in to undertake the

Lighting up the entire city along with those ghats before the PBD event was a challenging task, said a senior CPWD official involved with the job. The Varanasi ghats are riverfront steps leading to the banks of the River Ganges and the main attraction spots of the city. Most of the ghats are bathing and puja ghats,

while a few are used as cremation sites. Most Varanasi ghats were built after 1700, when the city was part of the Maratha Empire. Concerted efforts are on to make the evening arati a memorable experience for the PBD delegates at the Ganga ghats. Though there are total 84 ghats between Assi Ghat and Rajghat, the facade lighting system will cover only 62 ghats as some of the othes are in a highly dilapidated state. Facade lighting has been installed along most of the seven km stretch between Assi Ghat and Rajghat, including the doubledecker Rajghat bridge, said the official. While the facade lighting will have total 3,000 LED lights, there will be 1,867 heritage street light poles and 2,451 street light fittings operational to dazzle up the holy city.

Modi-Yogi bonhomie on full display at the Kumbh Mela

Maharani Gayatri Devi School has helped girls cross several hurdles and step out into the mainstream world with confidence. (Photo: IANS)

The Kumbh Mela is being held from Jan 15-March 4 SAKET SUMAN, PRAYAGRAJ

H

undreds of hoardings carrying the images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath dotted the streets of the holy town as millions from across India and abroad have descended here for the religious, spiritual and cultural congregation taking place barely three months ahead of the 2019 general elections. The Kumbh Mela, which opened formally in the early hours of Tuesday with the first of the six ‘shahi Snan’ (royal bath), and is expected to draw over 15 crore pilgrims this year, is a sea of saffron and slogans such as “Modi tum sangharsh karo, hum tumhare saath hain” (Modi you lead the fight, we are with you) and “Mandir wahin banayenge” (temple will be built at the disputed site in Ayodhya) rent the air at the site. Notably, both Modi and Yogi have waxed eloquent on the preparations for the holy dip, which according to legend, opens the doors to heaven. Devotees take a holy dip on Makar Sankranti at Kumbh mela in Prayagraj on Jan 15. (Photo: IANS)

The Kumbh Mela administration officials told IANS that Yogi has resolved to provide an unforgettable pilgrimage experience to crores of devotees visiting Kumbh. They say that Yogi has laid special emphasis on “blending the grand traditions of Kumbh with the deployment of modern techniques and solutions” so that the kalpavasis, spiritual gurus, dignitaries, foreign visitors and the pilgrims have a “life emancipating experience” during their visit to Prayagraj. At a press conference, Prayagraj Commissioner Ashish Kumar Goyal told reporters that the state government is fully dedicated to providing a unique and fulfilling experience to visitors, highlighting that “there is no shortage of budget, we have sufficient funds”. He maintained that the Chief Minister is personally monitoring the Kumbh Mela, and has advised officials to do everything that is needed. The Kumbh is also the world’s largest religious congregation of its kind, making it a potential political playfield for the BJP that has a strong voter-base among the Hindus.

The 2019 Kumbh Mela is organized on a much wider scale than its previous editions and multiple tent cities, along with lakhs of new toilets have cropped up along the banks of the holy river Ganga. The historic city was also recently renamed from Allahabad by the BJP government. Displayed here are multiple lifesize hoardings welcoming pilgrims to Kumbh and they carry images of Modi and Yogi on either side with their messages. Such hoardings and posters are among the first sights that visitors arriving in the city encounter, and on the way leading up to the Sangam — the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna rivers and the mystical Saraswati — visitors are introduced to the various programs and campaigns introduced and promoted by the BJP government. The Kumbh Mela, 2019 is being held from January 15 to March 4, with six important bathing dates. Makar Sankranti, which fell on Tuesday, was the first of these dates for bathing, and officials expect over a crore devotee to take the holy dip on the first day of the fair.

L

ocated in the heart of the capital of Rajasthan, this all-girls school, started by an erstwhile queen, began a silent revolution in 1943 when the region was steeped in the claustrophobic orthodoxy of the purdah’ system for women. With an objective to liberate girls from the clutches of purdah system (the practice in certain Muslim and Hindu societies of screening women from men or strangers, especially by means of a veil or curtain), the Maharani Gayatri Devi School has been able to realise the dream of the queen after whom the school was named. The school, which has now completed 75 years of its existence, helped its students become financially independent and step out into the mainstream world with confidence. Not only has the school liberated girls from the purdah system, graduates of Maharani Gayatri Devi School have made a mark in all streams be it politics, Army, administration services, sports and even art and culture, says Colonel S.S. Sangwan (Retd.), Administrative Officer of the Maharani Gayatri Devi School. A student of this very school, Meira Kumar, served as MP five times and also served as Speaker

of the Lok Sabha in 2009-14. Rajnigandha Shekhawat has been a well-known sufi singer; Savitri Candy from 1959 batch became the first lady from Rajasthan to join the Indian Foreign Service in 1967. Apurvi Chandela (2003 batch) won gold medal in Commonwealth Games while Shagun Chaudhary became the first woman to qualify for Olympics trap shooting event. Even today, the school stands tall when it comes to grooming talent. Manashvi Katta, Yashasvi Katta and Manvi Gargoti were selected for Juniors IPL Cricket and Vasundra Chandrawat has been selected for International Karate Tournament to be held in 2019 in Bangladesh, Sangwan says. Started by Rajmata Gayatra Devi, the seeds of the idea of the school were sown when Jaipur’s king Sawai Man Singh brought home Princess Ayesha (formally Gayatri Devi) of Cooch Behar as his bride. The well-educated queen, with her global outlook and exposure, was sad to see girls spending their lives in purdah. Archana S. Mankotia, Principal of the school, says: “With a huge historical legacy, the principals from time to time have tried to infuse modernity and progressive attitude among girls which the erstwhile queen had once dreamed.”

Indra Nooyi may head World Bank If she is nominated by US President Donald Trump to be the Bank’s president, she will succeed Jim Yong Kim, a Korean immigrant who unexpectedly announced at the beginning of the year that he is quitting ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

I

ndian-American business leader Indra Nooyi, who headed the multinational PepsiCo, is under consideration for heading the World Bank, according to multiple media reports. If she is nominated by US President Donald Trump to be the Bank’s president, she will succeed Jim Yong Kim, a Korean immigrant who unexpectedly announced at the beginning of the year that he is quitting. By tradition, the US president names the head of the global financial institution and the nomination is rubberstamped by the executive directors. Nominating Nooyi, an immigrant woman from a developing country, could head off the mounting challenges to the US role in determining the Bank’s presidency. She would also fit the bill for

Trump’s preference for the private sector and for making international organizations fiscally more efficient. Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, who is an admirer of Nooyi and considers her as a mentor is said to be

backing her for the Bank job, according to the media reports quoting anonymous administration sources. Nooyi stepped down as chairwoman of the PepsiCo last August

after leading the international soft drinks, food and snacks giant for 12 years. When Nooyi was leaving Pepsico, Ivanka Trump called her an inspiration and a mentor and gushed, “I am deeply grateful for your friendship. Thank you for your passionate engagement on issues that benefit the people of this country, and beyond.” If Nooyi becomes the Bank’s president, the four top jobs in international financial policy-making would be held by women, two of them by women of Indian descent. This month Gita Gopinath became the chief economist of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF), which is headed by Managing Director Christine Lagarde. The Bank’s chief economist is Pinelopi Koujianou Goldberg. Another Indian-American, Nikki Haley, who stepped down as the US Permanent Representative to the UN at the end of last year, is

aj Shah, an Indian American spokesman in the White House Press Office, has left President Donald Trump’s administration and joined an arm of a Florida-based lobbying firm, officials said. Shah, a former researcher at the Republican National Committee, will lead the Media Group, the press wing of Ballard Partners, a

lobbying firm with offices in Florida and Washington, The New York Times quoted the officials as saying on Monday. He will work with Jamie Rubin, a Democrat who was a spokesman for Madeleine Albright, the former Secretary of State. also on the list of candidates under consideration, according to The Financial Times. The former South Carolina governor was the first Indian-American to be on the US federal cabinet and she pushed the UN to cut its budget and enhance efficiency. If Nooyi, who headed a multinational with annual revenue of $63.5 billion and assets of $79.8 billion, gets Trump’s nod, it will mark an ideological turnaround from former President Barack Obama’s orientation. Departing from the tradition of economists or politicians heading the Bank, Obama appointed Kim, a medical doctor and academic, to reinforce the mission of fighting poverty and promoting what was considered a more holistic development. But Kim also advocated greater cooperation with the private sector for financing development, which Nooyi would strengthen if she gets the job.

‘Proposed new UK immigration system to benefit Indians’ IANS, NEW DELHI

B

ritain’s post-Brexit proposed new skills-based immigration system that will remove the cap on skilled worker visas will benefit Indians, a team of British government officials emphasized during discussions with officials of the Indian government this week. The discussions signaled a new phase of cooperation and acted as a forum to discuss opportunities to strengthen the bilateral relationship, according to a statement issued by the British High Commission here. “The migration dialogue allowed UK government officials to engage directly with their Indian counterparts on UK’s plans for a new single,

skills-based immigration system after Brexit,” the statement said. “In addition, the UK government held round table events with key figures from the corporate, business and education sectors in India to

gather insight and highlight how the new system will benefit them,” it added. In the talks with the Indian officials, the British team emphasized that the new skills-based immigra-

tion system offers a significant opportunity to Indian nationals, particularly skilled workers and students. It was also pointed out that the current British visa system already provides a good service for India, with almost one in five of all British visas granted to Indian nationals. The British officials said that their government continues to work towards a more modern and efficient returns arrangements with India, which will support an enhanced migration partnership more broadly. “The UK government wants to encourage skilled workers to come to live and work in the UK and has proposed to abolish the cap on its

new skilled visa route when the new system comes into effect in 2021,” the High Commission statement said. “These proposals mean that there would be no limit on the number of skilled people, such as engineers, doctors and IT professionals, who can come to live and work in the UK,” it stated, adding that this will allow people from across the world to come to the UK for work or to study and to visit. In comments following Wednesday’s talks, British Immigration Minister Caroline Nokes said her country already issues more skilled worker visas to Indian nationals than to the rest of the world combined.

Vintage Dhoni star in maiden win With the 2-1 One-Day International (ODI) series win, India complete their tour Down Under without losing a series; clinch their first ever bilateral series win IANS, MELBOURNE

L

eg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal’s heroics with the ball were complemented well by former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s third consecutive half-century as he anchored India’s run chase to beat Australia by 7 wickets in the third ODI, and clinch their first ever bilateral series win here. With the 2-1 One-Day International (ODI) series win, India have completed their tour Down Under without losing a series. The Kohli-led men in blue had earlier registered a historic 2-1 win in the four-Test series while drawing the preceding three-match T20I rubber 1-1. At the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday, Australia paid the price for dropping the dangerous Dhoni on nought, as the veteran stumper, who has recently been at the receiving end of critics, came up with another defiant and calm half-century to guide the Indians home in style. Promoted to No.4, Dhoni first raised a strong 54-run third wicket stand with skipper Virat Kohli (46) and thereafter took India home with an unbeaten 121-run stand

with Kedar Jadhav (61 not out). Dhoni’s unbeaten knock of 87 came off 114 balls and was studded with six hits to the fence. After the departure of the inform opening duo of Rohit Sharma (9) and Shikhar Dhawan (23) with the Indian scoreboard ticking 59/2, Kohli and Dhoni laid the foundation for the chase. Fresh from a century in the sec-

ond ODI at Adelaide, Kohli looked set for another trademark chase but after facing 62 balls and striking three fours, the India captain was caught behind off Jhye Richardson. With India still needing 118 runs for a win, Dhoni carried on in the company of new man Jadhav and the highlight of their fourth wicket partnership was stealing the odd sin-

gles and converting them into twos. The 37-year-old Dhoni, who was dropped first ball by Glenn Maxwell at backward point, made the most of the life as he battled cramps to eventually get to a hat-trick of halfcenturies this series. With the tourists needing 66 off the last 10 overs, Dhoni and Jadhav, who also got to a hardworking half-century, ensured there were no

hiccups and went about their business as usual to eventually guide the team home. Interestingly, Dhoni also completed 1000 ODI runs in Australia on Friday. Earlier, Australia’s vulnerability to quality leg-spin was exposed by Chahal, who returned with his second overseas fifer to help India restrict the hosts for a meagre 230. Playing his first match of the series, Chahal wreaked havoc in the Australian line-up, returning a career-best 6/42 as the home batsmen seemed to have no clue about playing the leggie. After pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar got rid of the openers -- Aaron Finch (14) and Alex Carey (5) -- and reduced the hosts to 27/2, Chahal ripped through the middle order, taking the crucial wickets of the inform Shaun Marsh (39) and Usman Khawaja (34) in his very first over. The leggie then returned to remove all-rounder Marcus Stoinis (10) before ending a stiff 45-run seventh wicket stand between topscorer Peter Handscomb (58) and Jhye Richardson (16). His sixth victim was his opposite number in the Aussie camp Adam Zampa (3) even as Australia’s innings ended by the 49th over.

MELBOURNE: Russia’s Maria Sharapova defeated defending Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 here on Friday. The 30th-seeded 2008 Australian Open champion recorded her first win against Denmark’s Wozniacki (seeded third) in a grand slam, as Sharapova was defeated by the Dane at the 2010 and 2014 US Opens, reports Efe. “I knew I was going to get a tough match, she is the defending champi-

t is business as usual for Chennai boy D.Gukesh despite becoming the World’s second and India’s youngest chess Grand Master (GM). “Yes, I am happy. My goal for 2019 is to increase my rating to 2,650 from the current rating of 2,510,” Gukesh, studying in Class 7 in Velammal Vidyalaya school here told IANS over phone in a matter-of-fact tone. With a score of seven points out of nine rounds in the tournament, Gukesh was busy preparing for the next round in a hotel room near the New Delhi railway station. “My favorite chess players are late Bobby Fischer and V. Anand. My favourite opening while playing white is Reti opening,” Gukesh said. But his doctor parents — D. Rajinikanth and J. Padma Kumari — were very happy and relieved of tension. “I didn’t sleep yesterday (Monday) night. Gukesh had missed the GM norm narrowly earlier,” Rajinikanth told IANS. “I was very tense about his getting the GM norm in the morning. But

D. Gukesh.

Gukesh was not much perturbed,” Padma Kumari told IANS. The world’s youngest chess GM record is held by Sergey Karjakin of Ukraine, who won the coveted title at 12 years and seven months. “He will next play in the Gibraltar Masters later this month and it will be followed by Aeroflot Open Chess tournament in Moscow,” Padma Kumari said about the path forward towards Gukesh’s rating goal. For the doctor couple, life was tough ever since Gukesh started to

make his mark in the chess circuit. “He plays in all the GM tournaments held in India and also in Atournaments overseas. But playing in overseas tournaments is a very costly affair. We had even sold a piece of land to fund his chess pursuits,” Rajinikanth said. Queried about sponsors he said: “City based company Microsense is a sponsor. Similarly Velammal Vidyalaya’s Correspondent M.V.M. Velmohan had also supported while ONGC gave him a scholarship.”

‘SABARIMALA CRISIS CREATED BY CM’ Alleges Sabarimala Action Council, demands Pinarayi Vijayan’s resignation and an apology IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he All India Sabarimala Action Council said this week that the current law and order situation in Kerala is a direct result of actions taken by the ‘Marxist’ Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and demanded his resignation and an apology “for his actions against the Hindus and Sabarimala devotees in particular”. “Right from the beginning of the Sabarimala issue, the Marxist party and the Chief Minister have been taking a stand to politicize the issues for their benefit. Their policy has been to destabilize the Hindu religious practices, temples and such other spiritual institutions so that Hindus are demoralized and are divided,” Swami Chidananda Puri said while addressing the media here. He added the steps taken by

Goa beach shack operators oppose move to cap prices PANAJI: Operators of beach shacks, temporary palm-thatched shacks which offer food and refreshments on Goa’s beaches, have opposed a proposed move by the Tourism Ministry to fix a cap on prices of food and beverages. A few days after Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar said that steep pricing of refreshments in restaurants and beach shacks had triggered a drop in the number of tourist arrivals in Goa, Cruz Cardozo, who heads the Goa Shack Owners Welfare Society, said the government should first cap exorbitant pricing on the menus of starred restaurants. “If the government wants to control prices, they should first control prices in five-star restaurants and not shacks. The prices there are exorbitant. The food and beverages sold in starred outlets are much more expensive than ours,” Cardozo told IANS. After Goa experienced a dip in the number of tourist arrivals for a second-year running, Ajgaonkar said the state Tourism Ministry was working on a mechanism to enforce capping of prices on menus in shacks and restaurants. Blaming escalating prices as one of the reasons for the drop in the number of tourists visiting the coastal state, he said any restaurant or shack which prices food and beverages above Rs 500 would be fined. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Vijayan’s Communist Party of India are just to appease a section of minority communities so as to get their political support. “The Marxist party for quite some time has been taking a very soft stand towards Muslim extremism due to which Kerala has

already become a breeding ground for extremists, both domestic and international. Islamic State terrorists have established deep roots in Kerala and reports on massive recruitment into the IS are plenty,” Puri said. He asserted the Kerala Chief

Minister is determined to implement the Supreme court order, which allows menstruating women’s entry in the temple, even after the apex court’s decision to review its order on January 22. “No women devotee, in the age group of 10 to 50, has ever attempted to enter the Sabarimala temple after the Supreme Court judgement of September 28, 2018. But the Kerala Chief Minister is determined to implement the order, which even the Supreme court has decided to review on January 22, 2019 in an open court, in order to achieve his political intentions, irrespective of the devotees’ beliefs,” he said. Puri said the Sabarimala devotees are not against any women or feminist movement and that they have only put in place the restriction due to the age-old practice of the Sabarimala temple. “The limited restriction on the

entry of women from 10 to 50 years, in the Sabarimala Temple, is a matter of religion and religious faith and practice, and the fundamental principles underlying the ‘prathishtha’ of the Sabarimala Temple, as well as the custom and usage of worship of the deity there, Lord Ayyappa,” he said. The Sabarimala Action Council members claimed that due to the current law and order situation and “the violence propagated jointly by the Marxists and the Muslim fundamentalists”, the life of ordinary people have been badly affected and the devotees are under severe mental stress. The council further demanded the immediate intervention of the Union Government so that the situation does not go out of hand and urged the government to establish the rights of Sabarimala devotees “to save them from Police raj and Marxist led government”.

Re-open Vedanta’s plant in TN, says SC IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he Supreme Court has paved the way, for now, for the re-opening of the Vedanta’s Sterlite copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu’s as it put on hold the status quo order passed by the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court. The state government had on May 28, 2018 ordered the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to seal and “permanently” close the plant in the wake of violent protests over pollution con-

cerns. The protests turned violent, resulted in the death of 13 people in police firing on May 22-23 in Tuticorin. While staying the December 21, 2018 status quo order, the Supreme Court bench of Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman and Justice Navin Sinha said, “The directions that have been passed by the National Green Tribunal, by its judgment (on December 15), will continue to subsist.” However, the court said the operation of the directions of the green tribunal would be subject to the outcome of

an appeal by the Vedanta group against the High Court order. The High Court had on December 21 ordered status quo as existed prior to the NGT’s December 15 order by which the green tribunal had set aside the order of the state govern-

ment shutting down the copper smelting plant for causing irreversible water pollution. The High Court had restrained Vedanta group from taking any step for the reopening of the copper smelting plant.

‘Shameful that ailing Parrikar propped in CM chair’ IANS, PANAJI

t is shameful that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar continues to be in power despite being severely unwell, former Goa RSS chief Subhash Velingkar said this week, adding that an ailing head of state is detrimental to the state and its people. Velingkar, who was sacked as state Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) head two years back amid an ongoing feud with Parrikar, also said that his political party, the Goa Suraksha Manch (GSM), would contest the upcoming state Assembly byelections in Goa. “It is a matter of shame that a

state like Goa is being government by a Chief Minister who is severely ill. The state deserves better. The CM should take rest and it is shameful that he is being kept in

the chair in this state,” Velingkar told reporters in Panaji. Parrikar is suffering from advanced pancreatic cancer and has been in and out of hospitals in

Goa, Mumbai, Delhi and New York for 11 months now. The opposition has been demanding his resignation, claiming that his continuance in the chair during the prolonged illness, has led to an administrative slowdown, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has insisted that Parrikar is fit enough to rule the state. Velingkar also announced that his party would contest the upcoming but yet unscheduled assembly bypolls in Shiroda and Mandrem legislative constituencies, which have been necessitated due to the resignations of Congress legislators Subhash Shirodkar and Dayanand Sopte, respectively, both of whom joined the BJP last year.

‘India leading digital transformation race’ Nearly 8% of GDP components are impacted by digital technologies and by 2021, 60% of those in India will be impacted NISHANT ARORA, BENGALURU

n a renewed push for Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven Intelligent Cloud and Intelligent Edge use cases in the country, Microsoft India on Wednesday said there is highest penetration of AI skills among the workforce that will fuel digital transformation in the country sooner than thought. “A tectonic shift is happening in AI. Nearly 85 percent of enterprises globally will use AI in some form or the other by 2020. Indian firms are now fast catching up,” Anant Maheshwari, President, Microsoft India, told reporters at the company’s flagship Media and Analysts’ Day here. Nearly eight percent of GDP components in India are currently impacted by digital technologies and by 2021, 60 percent of those will be impacted. “Almost every sector is becoming digital and that transformation is impacting every company in India,” stressed Maheshwari.

Microsoft to set up 10 AI labs, train 5 lakh youth in India BENGALURU: Microsoft India on Wednesday announced to set up Artificial Intelligence (AI) labs in 10 universities and train five lakh youth across the country in disrupting technologies. The company also said it will upskill over 10,000 developers over the next three years. “We believe AI will enable Indian businesses and more for India’s progress, especially in education, skilling, healthcare and agriculture,” said Anant Maheshwari, President, Microsoft India.

to change the game. Microsoft currently has 54 Azure Cloud regions -- more than AWS and Google combined. “We will continue to work closely with the countries when it comes to data localization. India already has three Azure regions which show how serious we are for keeping data within the boundaries,” said Maheshwari.

Facebook commits $300 mn India saw world’s lax cyber security protocols to support local news VISHAL GULATI, NEW DELHI

SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook has announced to invest over $300 million over the next three years to support local news organizations. In a blog post, Campbell Brown, Vice President, Global News Partnerships, said that Facebook wants to support local journalists and newsrooms with their newsgathering needs in the immediate future and help these organizations build sustainable business models, through both its product and partnership work. “We heard one consistent answer: people want more local news, and local newsrooms are looking for more support. That’s why today we’re announcing an expanded effort around local news in the years ahead,” Brown said late on Tuesday. In 2018, Google also committed $300 million for over three years to strengthen quality journalism, support sustainable business models and empower newsrooms through

technological innovation. It was also committing to spend $300 million over the next three years on its various journalism-related projects. According to Facebook, it would invest $300 million in news programmes, partnerships and content. Among the components is a Pulitzer Centre -- a $5 million endowment gift to launch “Bringing Stories Home”, a gift that will provide local newsrooms across the US with reporting grants to foster coverage on topics that affect local communities. “Report for America” is a $2 million investment in the initiative to place 1,000 journalists in local newsrooms across America over the next five years. “This year, we’ll commit over $20 million to continue our local ‘Accelerator’ programme in the US and to expand the model globally, including in Europe,” said Brown.

M

alicious cyber-attacks and lax cyber security protocols again led to massive breaches worldwide of personal information in 2018 and the largest were in India. Rising geopolitical and geo-economic tensions are the most dangerous risk in 2019, with 90 percent of experts saying they expect a further economic confrontation between the major powers this year. Environmental degradation is the long-term risk with four of the top five most impactful global risks this year related to climate. These were the findings of the World Economic Forum’s 14th edition of Global Risks Report 2019, which was released on Wednesday in London. The report comes in the run-up to the 2019 World Economic Forum meeting in Davos from January 22-25. In India, the government ID database Aadhaar reportedly suffered multiple breaches that potentially compromised the records of all 1.1 billion registered citizens, it said. It was reported in January that criminals were selling access to the database at a rate of Rs 500 rupees for 10 minutes, while in March a

leak at a state-owned utility company allowed anyone to download names and ID numbers. Elsewhere, personal data breaches affected around 150 million users of the MyFitnessPal application and around 50 million Facebook users. The report said the world’s ability to foster collective action in the face of urgent major crises has reached crisis levels, with worsening international relations hindering action across a growing array of serious challenges. A darkening economic outlook, in part caused by geopolitical tensions, looks set to further reduce the potential for international cooperation in 2019, said the report.

The Global Risks Report, which incorporates the results of the annual Global Risks Perception Survey of approximately 1,000 experts and decision-makers, points to deterioration in economic and geopolitical conditions. Trade disputes worsened rapidly in 2018 and the report warns that growth in 2019 will be held back by continuing geo-economic tensions, with 88 percent of respondents expecting further erosion of multilateral trading rules and agreements. If economic headwinds pose a threat to international cooperation, efforts will be further disrupted in 2019 by rising geopolitical tensions among the major powers, according to the report.

bout 90 percent of people in the country risk their safety by not using rear seat belts despite over 70 percent affirming to its presence in their cars, a report by Nissan Motor India and SaveLIFE Foundation said on Friday. The report titled “Rear Seat-Belt Usage and Child Road Safety in India” was released by Union Minister of Road, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari at an event at the India Habitat Centre here. “As India continues on its trajectory of rapid infrastructure growth, the role of road safety acquires immense importance. to work together to make road safety a people’s movement.” Besides the rear seat belt usage, the study also focused on the safety of children during commute

and revealed that two-thirds of respondents believed that Indian roads were unsafe for children. “This report becomes especially relevant in light of the latest data released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways according to which 9,408 children lost their lives to road crashes in 2017. This translates to nearly 26 child deaths on Indian roads every day,” SaveLIFE Foundation Founder and CEO Piyush Tewari said at the event. He asserted that the report builds a strong case for a comprehensive national road safety law, or the passage of Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill to bridge the policy-implementation gap and build a robust enforcement mechanism for better compliance. Tewari said it was high time that

basic provisions such as child helmets, safety measures in school zones, child seats, special training for school bus and van drivers, and adult accountability should be made mandatory across the country. Thomas Kuehl, President, Nissan India Operations, said: “While there have been various initiatives undertaken to raise awareness around road safety in India, the importance of wearing rear seat belts has been completely neglected.” “Our strategic partnership with SaveLIFE Foundation and SHARP will set a strong base to bring attention towards this important issue. The first phase of our campaign will focus on reaching out and educating over 200,000 children in 240 schools across 12 cities on the usage of rear seat belts and road safety.”

omen tend to forget pain that they suffered more quickly than men, confirmed a new study in mice and humans, challenging the widely held belief that the fairer sex are more sensitive to pain than men. The study, by researchers from Canada’s University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM), showed that men and women remembered earlier painful experiences differently. While men (and male mice) remembered earlier painful experiences clearly, women (and female mice) did not seem to forget. When experiencing pain again, men seemed to be stressed and hypersensitive in remembering, but women were not stressed by their earlier experiences of pain. “If remembered pain is a driving

surprising was that men reacted more because it is well known that women are both more sensitive to pain than men and that they are also generally more stressed out,” Martin added in the study published in the Current Biology journal.

Why walk in the woods is your ticket to better health, super mood IANS, HONG KONG

D

oes your child often feel stressed and depressed? A walk in the woods is likely to improve his/her mood, researchers said. The study, led by a team from the University of Hong Kong, revealed that children who developed a closer connection with nature had less distress, less hyperactivity and had a healthy lifestyle with regard to active play and eating habits. They also had fewer behavioral and emotional difficulties, as well as improved pro-social behavior.

The results give a new possibility for investigating the link between the outdoor environment and well-being in pre-school children. (Photo: Pexels)

However, despite the extensive, adjacent greenness, many families are not using these areas, the

researchers rued in the paper published in the PLOS ONE journal. “We noticed a tendency where

parents are avoiding nature. They perceive it as dirty and dangerous, and their children unfortunately pick up these attitudes,” said Tanja Sobko from the University’s School of Biological Sciences. In addition, the green areas are often unwelcoming with signs like “Keep off the grass”, Sobko added. Recent research shows that spending time with nature may bring many health benefits, and many environmental programmes around the world are trying to decrease ‘nature-deficit’ and ‘childnature disconnectedness’ in order to improve children’s health. For the study, the team prepared

a new 16-item parent questionnaire (CNI-PPC) to measure “connectedness to nature’ in very young children. The questionnaire identified four areas that reflect the child-nature relationship: enjoyment of nature, empathy for nature, responsibility towards nature and awareness of nature. The results give a new possibility for investigating the link between the outdoor environment and well-being in pre-school children. The team further plans to test the effect of exposing children to nature and changes in their gut microbiota.

Criticism makes you stronger: KJo

ctor Nawazuddin Siddiqui has lent support to an initiative aimed at increasing greenery in Mumbai. In association with Radio City’s campaign “Hara Hai Toh Bara Ahe”, the “Manto” actor has urged people to plant more trees to curb various environmental problems. “Mumbai is facing several environmental problems that are on the rise and the receding green cover is one of the key aspects amplifying this issue.

ilmmaker Karan Johar reads up everything being written about him on social media, and says he finds strength from the praise and the criticism. “All the praise, all the criticism somewhere makes you stronger. I read a lot of criticism and wake up to abuse sometimes and wake up to the nasty things they write about you but some of the things they write are actually true,” the filmmaker said. “When they criticise you, they are coming from some place of information that you must have also about yourself. Hence, it’s important to read the good and the bad and sometimes just turn your face from the ugly,” he added.

“Promoting tree plantations in our own vicinity is a basic but vital step towards preservation of the environment which in turn will positively impact the health and safety of citizens,” Nawazuddin said in a statement. He said the initiative “is a great step towards raising awareness which will highlight the significance of planting trees and drive every individual to take a step in the direction of developing a green, pollution free city.”

C

alling out Rajkumar Hirani in the #MeToo movement is a radical step-up in the naming and shaming endeavor. The creator of the “Munna Bhai” series has silenced all his fans and friends in the film industry, and the outspoken few have said the allegations against him are disturbing. Writer Apurva Asrani is one of the rare voices that spoke up on being contacted. He said: “I choose to believe the young lady as it takes much courage to speak up against such a powerful filmmaker and then risk being boycotted by the film indus-

try. I think the producers did the right thing by removing Mr. Hirani’s name from the ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’ posters and promos. “This is something the Phantom Films producers had failed to do after allegations against Vikas Bahl came to light.” A HuffPost India article narrated the alleged ordeal of a woman who worked with Hirani on “Sanju”, and who has claimed the filmmaker sexually assaulted her. Hirani has denied it. Actress Dia Mirza, a close friend of Hirani, reacted with stupefied confusion. “I am deeply distressed by this news. As someone who has known

He is one of the most decent human beings I have ever worked with and I think it would be grossly unjust on my part to speak on this as I do not know the details,” Dia said. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta said: “It is disturbing. I hope the truth prevails and due process is followed to ensure a quick and just resolution.” Writer-director Vinta Nanda, who has named Alok Nath for sexual assault, is extremely vocal on the allegations again Hirani. “Despite having faced what I have personally, it’s hard to believe it. we’re conditioned by our feudal cultures. However, it’s no secret that patriarchy after so many decades of industrialization, which led to women having to join workforces across the world, is still too deeply entrenched in our social breeding. “It’s no secret that multitudes of men and women in India lead dual

lives, one what is required at home and within the family and the other that is required for them to be at work. Therefore, it’s very hard to understand what’s going on in a person’s head and it’s very easy to hide the negative manifestations of power behaviors within the binary.”

‘The Accidental Prime Minister’: Nothing accidental about it

I

f you enjoy political satires, “The Accidental Prime Minister” may not be the film that its makers would recommend for you. Outwardly, the intent and purpose of this fiercely political parable is to give us the “real” picture of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s parent party and how it manipulated him into fronting their dynastic designs. And how much more real can it get than Anupam Kher as Mr. Singh? The beard, the turban, the soft hushed barely audible voice (make sure you get your seats in a Dolby equipped theatre)... Anupam gets the externals so right that we scarcely care about what lies beneath. And what lies! If we are to believe this film, then Manmohan

Film: “The Accidental Prime Minister”; Director: Vijay Ratnakar Gutte; Cast: Anupam Kher, Akshaye Khanna, Aahana Kumra, Suzanne Bernert and Arjun Mathur; Rating: *** Singh was a ‘baba’ in the woods, an angel in disguise, a scholar and academician thrown into the cesspit of politics, manipulated into supporting the Congress monarchy by a scheming mother-son pair. And we all know who they are, giggle giggle. There is nothing accidental about “The Accidental Prime Minister”. The not-so-hidden agenda is to show Sonia Gandhi and her two

children in the worst light possible. It can’t get any worse than Suzanne Bernert as Sonia Gandhi. Suzanne arches her eyebrows so sharply, I feared for her facial well-being. Every actor cast as real-life

politicians has been given a clear brief to look as much as the reallife politician as possible. The line between acting and mimicry is invisible in the politics that underlines this political charade. In the theater, I heard delighted exclamations of recognition, the kind we hear when a stand-up comedian does an Amitabh Bachchan or a Shatrughan Sinha on stage. If you want to play spot-thepolitician, this film is huge fun. The only actor not doing an impersonation is Akshaye Khanna. “The Accidental Prime Minister” works well as a pantomime of power politics. Beyond that, we will have to wait for another day, another time, another regime. — Subhash K. Jha

Voice of Indian-American Voters Launched in Chicago BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO,IL— A new community civicengagement group, the Voice of IndianAmerican Voters, launches on January 13th, 2019 in Chicago, IL. VIA Voters is a new community group launched with the goal of increasing the civic engagement of Indian-Americans in Chicagoland area and nationally. The founding members of the group are prominent business people and community members Mr. Sanjjeev Singh, Dr. Anuja Gupta, and Dr. Bharat Barai. “We felt there was a need for a Non-Partisan Platform that promoted the civic engagement of the Indian-Americans at the local and national levels,” said the founders. The top goals of the group include seeking a better level of engagement with elected officials, creating a more informed voter base, and increasing the participation of Indian-Americans in the election process. The VIA Voters was officially launched at the Waterford Banquets, in Elmhurst, IL, on Sunday, January 13th 2019. Several community business people, leaders, and the media attended this event. “In our businesses we often need to interact with elected public officials and a big goal for me to initiate such a cause was to seek a better level of engagement with them,” said Dr. Anuja Gupta. Dr. Gupta is a physician and real-estate developer of Verandah Retirement Community. She is also an active community leader, having founded the Womens Empowerment Campaign (WE), a networking and empowerment platform for Indian women in the Chicagoland area. “Indian-Americans are the most successful minority in the country, yet currently we do not get the attention we deserve from elected officials because there is no significant powerful group,” said Mr Sanjjeev Singh, president of ASAR America, Inc. a technology company based in Naperville, IL. The participation of Indian-Americans in the election process is sadly much below the national average. “As a community we need to be more involved in the voting process. Michigan Senate Candidate’s Campaign Literature Charge Dismissed BY A STAFF WRITER ANN ARBOR, MO- A misdemeanor charge related to campaign literature has been dismissed against a recent Indian American candidate for the state Senate in Michigan. Ann Arbor District Judge Elizabeth Hines issued an opinion Jan. 10 that the state law under which Anuja Rajendra was charged with falsely representing herself as an incumbent is an unconstitutional infringement of free speech. Rajendra, an Ann Arbor businesswoman, lost a four-way Democratic primary race in August. She was defended by the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, the report said. Rajendra said after the Jan. 10 hearing that “words cannot describe the trauma of being thrown into the criminal justice system when you did nothing wrong,” according to the report. The Washtenaw County prosecutor’s office says it hasn’t decided yet whether it

Indian Origin Van Driver Had a BloodAlcohol Nearly 4 Times Legal Limit BY A STAFF WRITER WAYNE, NJ— A Pequannock man was hospitalized after police who pulled him over found he had a blood-alcohol level nearly four times the legal limit for driving in New Jersey, authorities said Tuesday. Wayne police responded about 3:15 p.m. Saturday to a call of a “careless and dangerous driver” of a van on Route 23 North. Callers said the driver was “all over the road, unable to control the vehicle,” police Capt. Laurence W. Martin said. The officers stopped the van on Route 23 North in Wayne near the Pequannock border. “They detected a strong odor of (alcohol), bloodshot eyes, droopy eyelids,” Martin said. “Three unopened mini bottles of vodka were also found.” The driver, Hitesh Patel, 43, failed a field sobriety test and was taken to Wayne police headquarters where he was given a

BY A STAFF WRITER SAN JOSE, CA— Ash Kalra, a second-term California assemblyman representing the 27th Legislative District, was named the chair of the Assembly Committee on Labor and Employment Committee, his office announced on Jan. 11. Kalra, who was named to the chair by Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, will hold the position for the 2019-2020 legislative session. “I am grateful for this leadership opportunity and would like to thank Speaker Rendon for appointing me chair of the Labor Committee,” said Kalra in a statement. The committee’s primary jurisdictions are wages, hours, employment discrimination, CalOSHA, employment development, and public job programs. In addition to being named chair, Kalra recently voiced his thoughts on newly sworn-in Governor Gavin Newsom’s proposed 2019-2020 budget, which he says prioritizes the values of California. “I am particularly appreciative of Governor Newsom’s attention to pay down the state’s debt, help address local school district pension obligations, and ensure that we do not overlook the state’s unfunded liabilities,” Kalra said in a statement. Kalra, the chair of the Assembly Labor and Employment Committee, said he is excited by Newsom’s actions to expand worker benefits and protections, including expanding and extending Paid Family Leave for California’s working families, rebranding and expanding the state’s Earned Income Tax Credit, and ensuring that federal employees impacted by the current federal government shutdown have expeditious access to their entitled unemployment benefits.

Ash Kalra

Newsom’s “California for All” budget of $13.6 billion breaks down this way: $4 billion investment that eliminates all outstanding budgetary debt as well as deferrals; $4.8 billion to build reserves, bringing the state’s Rainy Day Fund to more than $15 billion this year (and nearly $20 billion over four years); and $4.8 billion to pay down unfunded retirement liabilities. Prior to being elected to the California state Assembly, Kalra served two terms on the San Jose City Council, where he championed protections for city employees, including police and firefighters, and was an outspoken voice in support of maintaining San Jose’s pension commitments to its workers. Kalra was previously chair of the Aging and Long Term Care Committee, of which he remains a member, and continues to serve on the Education, Judiciary and Water, Parks and Wildlife committees.

Federal Judge Blocks Citizenship Question on 2020 Census BY A STAFF WRITER WASHINGTON, DC— A federal judge blocked the Trump administration from asking about citizenship on the 2020 census, ruling that the government cut too many corners in its decision-making on adding the question. Indian American organizations along with other community groups have protested the addition of the citizenship question on the Census, believing it will lead to a massive undercount of immigrants. The ruling is a serious blow to President Trump, whose campaign has repeatedly bragged about the controversial question’s inclusion. Judge Jesse M. Furman, an Obama appointee to the bench, rejected immigrant-rights groups’ claims that the question was motivated by racism or other nefarious motives, saying those claims went unproven. But he did say Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, who oversees the Census Bureau, ignored the advice of experts who said adding the question in could frighten people from taking part in the 2020 count. “Secretary Ross violated the public trust,” Judge Furman wrote in a 277-page scolding. His ruling won’t be the last word. The Supreme Court had already agreed to hear one small part of the case whether Mr. Ross could be forced to testify. And the Trump administration is bound to appeal Judge Furman’s decision. The Justice Department said it is still reviewing the decision, but defended Mr. Ross’s decision-making. “Our government is legally entitled to include a citizenship question on the census and

people in the United States have a legal obligation to answer. Reinstating the citizenship question ultimately protects the right to vote and helps ensure free and fair elections for all Americans,” said Kelly Laco, a department spokesperson. Judge Furman acknowledged his opinion was too long, but said it was the result of his thorough investigation of the case and the weighty stakes in the 10-year count, upon which political power and billions of dollars in federal aid are divided. In his decision, Judge Furman said that there’s nothing inherently wrong with asking about citizenship and indeed it’s been asked in the past on the decennial census, and is still

asked on the American Community Survey, the rolling census that takes place every year for a small percentage of Americans. But the judge said that in this case, Mr. Ross ignored key checks built into the process to vet questions, such as extensive testing about the best way to ask them, and what effects their appearance might have on public participation. There was no “pretesting,” nor did Mr. Ross ask for a waiver from the pretesting requirements. Instead, Mr. Ross said the question had been “well tested” before, including on the more narrow annual community survey, so there was no need to go through the hurdles again for the 2020 count.

BY A STAFF WRITER CLAYTON, MO— An Indian American doctor in St. Louis County will give up his medical license and voluntarily leave the U.S. after being sentenced for sexually abusing two female patients. Forty-year-old Abhishek Jain, of Maryland Heights, was sentenced Jan. 7 to 30 days in jail and five years of probation. As part of the plea deal, he will voluntarily leave the country rather than being deported. As per report, Jain was sentenced after pleading guilty to two felony counts of seconddegree sodomy and two misdemeanor charges of sexual abuse. When he was charged December 2017, Jain’s medical license was under probation because of past troubles in three other states. Jain, who is originally from India, worked at International Pain Management Services, with offices at 5000 Cedar Plaza Parkway in unincorporated St. Louis County and at 261 Dunn Road in Florissant, MO.

The 49-year-old Indian American businessman was fatally shot October 11 during a robbery at the Stop N Go convenience store he and his wife owned in Jeffersonville. According to police, detectives arrested 35-year-old Antonio McRae in connection with the robbery and murder of Patel. Detectives say McRae confessed to the murder in an interview with police. They found him at his Beech Grove apartment, less than a half mile away from where Patel was killed, the report said. Police say they found a gun and similar clothing to the suspect’s in McRae’s apartment. Jeffersonville Police said they were sent to the station around 10:50 p.m. on

Praful Patel killed in Oct 2018

October 11 after a female customer called 911 to report that she was inside the store and there was no sign of anyone behind the

counter. They found Patel dead in the office area of the store. Relatives of Patel had previously come out asking for the public’s help, offering a $10,000 reward to information leading to an arrest. As per reports that an assailant shot Patel and reportedly took an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing on foot in the Ohio River city. Patel’s son, Shyam Patel, said the family is “extremely grateful” for the work being done by police, and for the outpouring of support from the community. Patel was a well-known business owner and beloved by countless community members who were regulars at his store. The reward that was being offered by the FBI’s Indianapolis field office sought information leading to the identification, arrest and prosecution of the suspect, according to the report. McRae is being held at the Clark County Jail on a $1 million cash bond.

Police Officers Rescue Man Trying to Swim Accross Icy Chicago River in Loop

BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL— A security guard and several police officers rescued a man from the Chicago River early Tuesday, after he tried to go for a swim in below-freezing temperatures. The guard was working near Wacker and Dearborn, when he heard a man in the Chicago River screaming for help around 1:05 a.m. He called police, and even helped officers with the water rescue.

The 29-year-old victim held on to a life ring as the security guard dragged him by a rope to get him to the other side of the river, where several officers were waiting to pull him out of the water. The officers helped keep him warm before paramedics arrived, giving him a hat and yellow jacket. They then carried him up the stairs, where other officers surrounded the man to warm him before he was loaded into an ambulance.

Police said the victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. Officers said the man told them he was leaving a concert at the House of Blues, and had been drinking, and decided to try to swim across the river. The man was in the water for about 10 minutes before the 911 call came in. Police warned people to stay out of the water given the frigid conditions.
