India’s recovery rate nears 30% even as cases touch 50,000-mark
HiIndia Newsdesk India’s coronavirus recovery rate has increased to nearly 30% even as the total number of registered coronavirus infections reached 46,342 on Friday, said the health ministry. It added that there were 216 districts that had not reported new positive cases. “In the last 24 hours, there were 3,390 new Covid-19 positive cases and 1,273 recoveries. The recovery percentage is now 29.36%. Till now, 16,540 patients have been cured and 37,916 patients are under active medical supervision,” said Lav Agrawal, joint secretary, health ministry. Agarwal said 3.2% of patients under active medical care are on oxygen support, 4.7 % are in ICU (intensive care unit) support and 1.1% of patients are on ventilator support. Stressing on the need to ensure Covid-free zones do not see new infections, Agarwal reeled off data on the district-wise break-up of coronavirus exposure.
Before lifting lockdown, govt needs to NSA Ajit Doval packs in 3 blunt messages to bring transparency in exit plan: Rahul Pak in daily PoK weather forecast
HiIndia Newsdesk Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi said on Friday that the nationwide lockdown to combat the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19) is not like an on-off switch, saying that if the government wants to end the
lockdown, it must bring physiological change in the minds of the people and transperancy in exit plan. In a video conference with mediapersons, Rahul Gandhi, who is also an MP from Kerala’s Wayanad, said, “We have been having internal discussions on the suggestions to we would be giving the government.” He said the country is beginning to run into a little bit of problem. “There is a strong feeling that we need to immediately release packages to the MSMEs, give money in the hands of the poor and have a strategy for the migrants besides preparing for the opening of the lockdown,” he said.
The central point of NSA Ajit Doval’s proposal is that “this is my area and I am asserting my sovereignty by taking all the steps”

‘If MS Dhoni plays in T20 World Cup, it would be easier for us’: Kuldeep Yadav
HiIndia Newsdesk However, teammate Kuldeep Yadav strongly feels that Dhoni is in fine form and should be included in the national camp for the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia in October-November. “I am of course missing MS Dhoni. Whenever you play with a senior player, you become fond of them and start missing them and their presence,” Kuldeep told. As far as his retirement is concerned, it is Dhoni’s decision and it should be left to him. There is no point for us to debate on that. He is very fit and I personally feel he should play for India.
this, ICMR will conduct the trial in 21 hospitals, to assess safety & efficacy of convalescent plasma,” said Lav Agarwal, joint secretary, health ministry. Agarwal said five of these hospitals were in Maharashtra, four in Gujarat, two each in Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, and one each in Punjab, Karnataka, Telangana and Chandigarh. Convalescent plasma therapy involves taking antibodies from cured Covid-19 patients and injecting them in the blood of sick patients suffering from coronavirus. The transfusion of plasma is carried out through a machine which separates the plasma from the blood which is then retransferred into the donor.

HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal announced that the exams will be held from July 1 to July 15. The government had decided that the Class 12 Board exams should finish before JEE Main is conducted, as per sources. The entrance test for admission to NITs will be held over five days between July 18 and 23. CBSE has been

For Class 10, only exams for students of North East Delhi, who could not appear for the examination due to the riots, will be held. CBSE is also working on resuming the evaluation of answer scripts, which was stopped in March due to the nationwide lockdown. One of the options being considered is to deliver the answer scripts to the examiners at home.

More than 2,64,000 people have died of COVID-19 globally and 37 lakh tested positive for the disease.
HiIndia Newsdesk The spread of the deadly coronavirus across the globe from China was either a terrible mistake on the part of the Chinese or probably it was incompetence, US President Donald
Trump said on Thursday. “It (coronavirus) could have been stopped at the point. It could have been stopped right at the source. It would have been easy to do, but something happened. Something happened,” he
told reporters in the Oval Office of the White House. “Either they made a terrible mistake — probably it was incompetence. Somebody was stupid and they did not do the job that they should have done. It is too bad,” the president said in response to a question.

Trump, Pence test negative after White House valet contracts coronavirus
HiIndia Newsdesk U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have tested negative for the novel coronavirus after a member of the U.S. military who works at the White House as a valet came down with the virus. During a meeting with the governor of Texas in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump told reporters he had little contact with the man and would be tested daily going forward.

HiIndia Newsdesk As Europe and the US loosen their lockdowns against the coronavirus, health experts are expressing growing dread over what they say is an all-butcertain second wave of deaths and infections that could force governments to clamp back down. “We are risking a backslide that will be intolerable,” said Dr Ian Lipkin
Japan, US agree to cooperate in Covid-19 fight HiIndia Newsdesk Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US President Donald Trump have agreed to cooperate closely in developing Covid-19 vaccines and drugs, and in their efforts to boost their economies. The two leaders held telephone talks as they seek to reopen businesses in their respective countries. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretar y Yoshihide Suga told reporters the leaders exchanged views on the Covid-19 situation, measures to prevent further spread of the virus, development of drugs and vaccines, and steps for reopening the economies in their countries. He said Abe proposed the talks.
of Columbia University’s Center for Infection and Immunity. Around the world, German authorities began drawing up plans in case of a resurgence of the virus. Experts in Italy urged intensified efforts to identify new victims and trace their contacts. And France, which has not yet eased its lockdown, has already worked up a “reconfinement plan” in the event of a new wave.
HiIndia Newsdesk The chorus for transparency and investigation into the outbreak of the coronavirus disease is growing louder in the run up to the truncated session of the World Health Assembly 10 days later. The disease, which originated in China late last year, has killed more than a quarter of a million people across the world in a little over four months. US drops criminal case against ex-Trump adviser Michael Flynn
For the past three years, prosecutors maintained that Flynn lied to the FBI in 2017 about his conversations with the Russian ambassador
HiIndia Newsdesk In an abrupt reversal, the US Justice Department moved to drop a criminal case against US President Donald
Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, according to court documents filed on Thursday. The case against Flynn was the most high-profile to arise in the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election and alleged collusion with the Trump campaign. In the court filing on Thursday, the Justice Department said that an FBI interview with Flynn was carried out without a “legitimate investigative basis” and called into question Flynn’s statement. “Moreover, we do not believe that the government can prove either the relevant false statements or their materiality beyond a reasonable doubt,” the court filing added. The federal judge in the case must still approve the request to drop the case.
the disease that could have minimised its spread. Questions have also been asked of the World Health Organisation that has been accused of being overly deferential to China. The loudest criticism of China and WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has come from the United States President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Michael Pompeo. Last month, the US suspended funding to the WHO to drive home the point. But the United States isn’t the only one upset about China and WHO’s role. Over the last week and more, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also lent the grouping’s backing to calls for an investigation into the origin of Covid outbreak. This week, the European Union declared that it would move a resolution at the World Health Assembly for a timely review of the international response to the coronavirus pandemic including the World Health Organisation’s performance.

This is really the worst attack we have ever had. This is worse than Pearl Harbour. This is worse than the World Trade Center. There has never been an attack like this,” he told reporters in the Oval Office of the White House during a meeting with nurses. “Hey, it has killed more people than Pearl Harbour. Hotter, humid weather may not halt spread of COVID-19: Study
spokeswoman Hua Chunying came as China has faced increasing global pressure in recent weeks to allow an international investigation into the origins of the pandemic. The review should be conducted in an “open, transparent and inclusive manner” under the leadership of World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Hua said at a briefing. But she added that it should be at an “appropriate time after the pandemic is over”. China also stressed that any inquiry should be based on the International Health Regulations, and be authorised by the World Health Assembly or Executive Committee - the WHO’s dual governing bodies.

S.Korea tracks new coronavirus outbreak in Seoul nightclubs
HiIndia Newsdesk Temperature and latitude are not associated with the spread of COVID-19 disease, according to a global study that found school closures and other public health measures are having a positive effect on containing the novel coronavirus. The study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, looked at 144 geopolitical areas — states and provinces in Australia, the US, and Canada as well as various countries around the world — and a total of over 3,75,600 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

HiIndia Newsdesk South Korean health authorities are investigating a small but growing coronavirus outbreak centred in a handful of Seoul nightclubs, seeking to
on that country’s success in controlling the coronavirus, state media reported on Friday. A North Korean military representative said on Friday that recent South Korean military drills were a grave provocation that demanded a reaction, according to a statement carried by Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). “The recent drill served as an opportunity which awakened us once again to the obvious fact that the enemies remain enemies all the time,” the statement said. North Korea cited a military exercise by the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) Air Combat Command on Wednesday, and said the drills violated inter-Korean agreements aimed at reducing military tensions.

keep infections in check as the country moves to less restrictive social distancing measures. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said on Friday at least 15 people have confirmed cases of the virus linked to the clubs in Itaewon, a neighbourhood popular with Koreans and foreigners in the city. South Korea has reported only a handful of cases in recent days, the majority of them in people arriving from overseas. The nightclub infections, while still limited, are expected to increase, and come at a time when the country has eased some social distancing restrictions.
An earthquake near Tehran early Friday morning killed one person and injured at least seven others, a spokesman for Iran’s Health Ministry reported on Twitter. He urged people to remain calm and follow safety guidelines. The center of the earthquake was south of Mount Damavand, near the city of Damavand, around 55 kilometers from Tehran. The mountain is volcanic, and at 5,761 meters (18,900 feet), is Iran’s highest peak. The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers. Afghanistan’s health minister tests positive for Coronavirus
HiIndia Newsdesk Afghan officials say the country’s health minister has tested positive for the new coronavirus as the country recorded 215 new infection cases in the last 24 hours. The ministry confirmed Friday that Ferozuddin Feroz has tested positive for the virus. Afghanistan has recorded more than 100 deaths from the virus out of more than 3,700 confirmed cases.
This patchier and slower pattern of transmission sets Africa apart from other regions, WHO experts say. Other factors taken into account are the region’s younger populations who have “benefitted from the control of communicable diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis”, as well as lower mortality rates. The WHO’s warning comes as Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria, plus others including South Africa and Ivory Coast, have begun relaxing some of their lockdown measures.

London mayor calls for ethnicity record of COVID-19 deaths HiIndia Newsdesk
London Mayor S a d i q K han on Thursday called for ethnicity to be recorded on all death certificates to expose the disproportionate effect that COVID-19 and other illnesses are having on the UK capital’s black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities.
The disproportionate impact on these communities has become increasingly clear with a recent Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS) analysis estimating that hospital death rates are highest among those with Pakistani, Black Caribbean and Black African heritage. Rupani, a high school junior from Northport, Alabama, earned the honour of naming the helicopter after she submitted her essay into NASA’s “Name the Rover” contest. It will also be the only one to be operated on Thursday. “ There is no delay in our flight operations, we are following all the set guidelines, which were released only yesterday. In such a short while we have achieved readiness and are only awaiting the final test report,” a source told IANS.
India will commence one of the world’’s largest air rescue operations from May 7, when the two airlines will start the first phase of the mission. As per plans, these two airlines will operate 64 flights in 7 days to bring back 14,800 stranded Indians from 12 countries. Overall, more than 190,000 Indian nationals, who would have to pay a one-way ferry service charge, are expected to be brought back in an airlift operation that might last couple of weeks or even more. In comparison, three decades ago, Air India led a group of airlines which included Indian Airlines and Aeroflot as well as IAF to rescue an estimated 111,711 Indians from the Gulf, after Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990. The 59day operation involved 488 flights and was conducted before the first Gulf war.

New York: An Indian-American scientist-led team from the University of Missouri has found that four antiviral drugs, including remdesivir, a drug originally developed to treat Ebola, are effective in inhibiting the replication of the coronavirus causing COVID-19. Kamlendra Singh, an associate professor
in the College of Veterinary Medicine, and his team used computer-aided drug design to examine the effectiveness of remdesivir, 5-fluorouracil, ribavirin and favipiravir in treating COVID-19. According to the study, published in the journal Pathogens, Singh found that all four drugs were effective in inhibiting, or blocking, the coronavirus’’ RNA proteins from making genomic copies of the virus. “As researchers, we have an obligation to search for possible treatments given that so many people are dying from this virus,” Singh said. These antiviral drugs, if they turn out to be effective, all have some limitations. “But in the midst of a global pandemic, they are worth taking a deeper look at because based on our research, we have reason to believe that all of these drugs could potentially be effective in treating COVID-19,” he added. The coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes COVID-19, like all viruses, can mutate and develop resistance to antiviral drugs.

Premier League restart mired Fighters see UFC 249 as chance in health risks, self-interest to spread hope, inspiration
EPL restart mired in health risks, self-interest
HiIndia Newsdesk The rush to restart soccer during the coronavirus pandemic has been framed as a national purpose. “It would lift the spirits of the nation,” Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said at the daily Downing Street coronavirus news conference on Tuesday, where he deputized for Prime Minister Boris Johnson. But Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish was more explicit about the wider motivations when there are $1 billion worth of games yet to be televised
Tony Ferguson on right
this season. “Yes, it is partly about the money,” Parish said. “And we should all care about the money.” At some point a decision will have to be made on whether financial obligations outweigh the risk of playing sport during a pandemic where Britain now has the world’s secondhighest announced death toll. The Premier League insists it will only restart when it is “safe and appropriate to do so,” but the vague aspiration obscures the reality that lives are at risk as long as there is no COVID-19 vaccine.
HiIndia Newsdesk When the UFC leads North America’s major sports back into action Saturday night with a pay-per-view show in Florida, Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje know they can’t do anything tentatively. “We’ve got to go out there and keep sports alive,” Ferguson said Tuesday after he flew into Jacksonville and was quickly tested for COVID-19. The 24 fighters at UFC 249 all realize they added another risk to their already hazardous professions when they
Will need at least one month of training before playing any competitive match: Ajinkya Rahane HiIndia Newsdesk
India’s Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane on Wednesday said cricketers will need at least a month of training before the resumption of competitive games, which should happen only after a vaccine for the dreaded COVID-19 is discovered. Rahane also said that in a coronavirusscarred world, the lifestyle of cricketers will undergo a change as far as pre and post-match routines are concerned. “…we would be needing three to four weeks of proper practice before playing any kind of competitive game (domestic or international),” Rahane, who was
named brand ambassador of ELSA (English Language Speech Assistant) app, said during an online press conference. “…I am missing my batting. But obviously, cricket should only start when we get a vaccine to fight the virus,”
he asserted. While the sports ministry is planning a phased resumption of national camps in Olympic disciplines, the BCCI is yet to spell out its plans on cricket. Rahane said he is focussing on his fitness amid the lockdown. “I am following the chart given by our trainer. I am also doing ‘free weights’ at home apart from meditation,” he said. He agreed that in future, players will be wary of wild celebrations and group hugs which they are so used to at the fall of wickets. “I would like to wait and watch. You will only get a fair idea about revised rules once play resumes.”
Many have backstabbed Yuvraj Singh including Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni: Yograj Singh
Yograj Singh took a dig at Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni for not backing his son.
HiIndia Newsdesk Yuvraj Singh’s father and former cricketer Yograj Singh is renowned for making bold statements, and in a recent interview, the 62-year-old took a dig at Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni for not backing his son.
Yograj said, “Along with these two (Dhoni and Kohli), I would say that even the selectors betrayed him. I had met Ravi recently. He asked me for a photograph. I called him and pointed out that all great players should get a send-off based on their performances. When Dhoni, Kohli or Rohit retire, I would request the board to give them a good send-off as they have done so much for Indian cricket. Many have backstabbed him and it hurts.”“Indian selector Sharandeep Singh, he used to go to meetings and say that Yuvraj should be dropped. Such people are appointed as selectors who do not know ABC of cricket. What do you expect from them? It hurts when someone backstabs you. Everybody was worried about what would happen to them if Yuvraj continues to perform,” claimed Yograj Singh. Yograj further claimed that Suresh Raina was heavily backed by Dhoni and the Uttar Pradesh based cricketer was considered for the 2011 World Cup squad ahead of his son.
agreed to compete amid the growing coronavirus pandemic. While the UFC has strict safety protocols in place, no one can be certain of the dangers involved when the mixed martial arts promotion returns from an eight-week break with three shows in eight days in Jacksonville. Ferguson and Gaethje both believe their risks are outweighed by the sporting rewards they will reap and the example they will provide when they fight for the interim UFC lightweight title in a fanfree arena.

Xiaomi Mi 10 too complex to be made in India Xiaomi’s 2020 flagship Mi 10 is all set to arrive in India on May 8 after months of delay due to the lockdown. As reiterated by Xiaomi India Managing Director Manu Jain, the Mi 10 will be an expensive device when compared to the Redmi Note and K-series because of the complex components and flagship-level features. Unlike the budget Redmi number series, the Redmi Note series and the K-series, the Mi 10 will not be made in India. The Mi 10 will be completely imported since
the components cannot be developed in India, Jain told indianexpess.com during a video conference. The import duties and the increase in GST rates on mobile phones in the country will add up to the Mi 10’s pricing, he noted. Jain also noted that the company will try hard to have enough units of Mi 10 in stock to fulfil consumer demand. With the Mi 10, Xiaomi hopes to transform the mindset of the Indian consumers who associate the brand with “affordability”.

riyanka Chopra Jonas, the colour is definitely black. She wears black quite often, and still manages to impress almost all the times. At the recently held Blenders Pride Fashion Tour, the actor walked the ramp in a black outfit that featured an interesting sheer neck and sleeve detailing. The look was rounded out with winged eyeliner, and accessorised with a studded belt. At the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017, she had stepped out in a Zaid Affas outfit. The ensemble stood out for the plunging neckline, and we loved the winged eyeliner.

‘Restore Illinois’: 5-Phase Plan by Gov. JB Pritzker to Reopen State BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL - Illinois Governor JB Pritzker on Tuesday announced a five-phase plan to reopen the state amid the coronavirus pandemic. The governor calls the plan “Restore Illinois” and he says it will be implemented on a “region-by-region basis.” “We have to figure out how to live with COVID-19 until it can be vanquished – and to do so in a way that best supports our residents’ health and our healthcare systems, and saves the most lives,” Pritzker said in a statement. The governor says his plan will be driven by the current virus data in different areas of the state. “Restore Illinois is a public health plan to safely reintroduce the parts of our lives that have been put on hold in our fight against COVID-19. This is also a data-driven plan that operates on a region-by-region basis, a recognition that reality on the ground looks different in different areas of our state,” Pritzker said. The governor also says we are now in phase two of the five-phase plan. Phase 2 began on May 1st when his modified stayat-home order began, which allowed some businesses to reopen. Pritzker says this initial plan can and will

be updated as research and science develop and as the potential for effective treatments or vaccines is realized. The five phases of reopening for each health region are as follows: Phase 1 – Rapid Spread: The rate of infection among those tested and the number of patients admitted to the hospital is high or rapidly increasing. Strict stay at home and social distancing guidelines are put in place and only essential businesses remain open. Every region has experienced this phase once already and could return to
it if mitigation efforts are unsuccessful. Phase 2 – Flattening: The rate of infection among those tested and the number of patients admitted to the hospital beds and ICU beds increases at an ever slower rate, moving toward a flat and even a downward trajectory. Non-essential retail stores reopen for curb-side pickup and delivery. Illinoisans are directed to wear a face covering when outside the home, and can begin enjoying additional outdoor activities like golf, boating and fishing while practicing social distancing. To varying degrees, every
region is experiencing flattening as of early May. Phase 3 – Recovery: The rate of infection among those tested, the number of patients admitted to the hospital, and the number of patients needing ICU beds is stable or declining. Manufacturing, offices, retail, barbershops and salons can reopen to the public with capacity and other limits and safety precautions. All gatherings limited to 10 or fewer people are allowed. Face coverings and social distancing are the norm. Phase 4 – Revitalization: The rate of infection among those tested and the number of patients admitted to the hospital continues to decline. All gatherings of up to 50 people are allowed, restaurants and bars reopen, travel resumes, child care and schools reopen under guidance from the IDPH. Face coverings and social distancing are the norm. Phase 5 – Illinois Restored: With a vaccine or highly effective treatment widely available or the elimination of any new cases over a sustained period, the economy fully reopens with safety precautions continuing. Conventions, festivals and large events are permitted, and all businesses, schools, and places of recreation can open with new safety guidance and procedures in place reflecting the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Indian American Woman Charged in Crash Indian American MU Researcher IDs that Seriously Injured Police Officer Four Potential Treatments for COVID-19

BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY-A New York woman was speeding when she struck the median on a Jersey City highway early Tuesday morning and set off a chain reaction that has left a Port Authority police officer in critical condition, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said. Amandeep Tiwana, 27, of Flushing, New York, was arrested by members of the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit Wednesday afternoon and she was charged with assault by auto, a fourth-degree crime, Suarez said. She is scheduled to make her first court appearance at 9 a.m. on May 20. Port Authority Police Officer Peter Siano, III and three Jersey City Police Officers were securing the scene of an earlier crash and doing traffic control on the depressed roadway of Route 139 when Tiwana struck the divider, a JCPD radio car and then struck
Siano. Two of the Jersey City police officers, detectives Christopher Monahan and David Valente, sustained minor injuries in the second crash. In the initial crash, which occurred just after 12:30 a.m., a 32-year-old New York woman overturned her vehicle on eastbound side of depressed Route 139. She was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center with minor injuries and has been released. After the second crash, Tiwana was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center for examination and was released. The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit is actively investigating this incident. BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, NY- – A team from the University of Missouri let by an Indian American scientist has found that four antiviral drugs, including remdesivir, a drug originally developed to treat Ebola, are effective in inhibiting the replication of the coronavirus causing COVID-19. Kamlendra Singh, an associate professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine, and his team used computer-aided drug design to examine the effectiveness of remdesivir, 5-fluorouracil, ribavirin and favipiravir in treating COVID-19. According to the study, published in the journal Pathogens, Singh found that all four drugs were effective in inhibiting, or blocking, the coronavirus’ RNA proteins from making genomic copies of the virus. Therefore, further testing in a laboratory setting and in patients is needed to better evaluate how the proposed treatments interact with the virus’ RNA polymerase. Singh’s research is an example of
Kamlendra Singh translational medicine, a key component of the University of Missouri System’s NextGen Precision Health Initiative. Meanwhile, the U.S. is planning to begin treating some of the most seriously ill COVID-19 patients with the antiviral medication Remdesivir, the maker of the drug has announced, as tensions continued across the country over the economic reopening of states. Last week, the Food and Dr ug Administration granted Emergency Use Authorization for the experimental antiviral drug remdesivir to treat COVID-19. As of May 5, confirmed cases in the country had reached 1,180,634 with 68,934 deaths, according to the tally maintained by Johns Hopkins University.

Puzzling New Mystery Illness Has Surfaced Among Children in New York BY A STAFF WRITER NEW YORK, , NY- — A puzzling new illness has surfaced among children, and medical experts believe it may be connected to COVID-19. At least 15 young people between the ages of 2 and 15 in New York City have been hospitalized with the inflammatory disease, which is is similar to Kawasaki syndrome, a rare blood vessel disorder. “Even though it’s uncommon, compared to the hundreds of thousands of people who have contracted this disease, it’s still causing us concern,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday. “We are learning that even though children are by and large mildly affected when it comes to COVID-19 that there can be situations that they are more severely affected. And thank God in this situation we haven’t had any children who have died with this Kawasaki or Kawasaki-like illness,” said New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot. There are a growing number of cases being reported on Long Island and New Jersey as well. Dr. Barbot described the Kawasaki-like disease

USCIS Updates Policy on False Claims of U.S. Citizenship USCIS NEWS RELEASE WASHINGTON, DC-U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services today announced it is updating its Policy Manual (PDF, 307 KB) to align with the Department of Justice’s Board of Immigration Appeals’ (BIA) precedent decision in Matter of Zhang. Decided in June 2019, the BIA held in this decision that false claims of U.S. citizenship do not need to be knowingly made to make an alien deportable under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The Policy Manual also applies the BIA’s decision to the false claim to U.S. citizenship ground of inadmissibility, as it is virtually identical to the ground of deportability. Under the law, an alien is inadmissible or deportable if the alien falsely represents him or herself to be a citizen of the United States for any purpose or benefit under immigration law or under other federal or state law. The only exception Congress provided to the false claim to U.S. citizenship ground of inadmissibility requires that each parent of the alien is or was a U.S. citizen, the alien permanently resided in the United States before the age of 16, and the alien reasonably believed he or she was a U.S. citizen when claiming to be one. adjustment of status based on refugee or asylee status, as well as legalization applicants, may be eligible to apply for a waiver of this ground of inadmissibility. This ground of inadmissibility does not apply to special immigrant juveniles seeking adjustment of status, or to registry applicants. Matter of Zhang clarified that it is not
necessary for the government to show intent when it comes to false representations to U.S. citizenship. This guidance aligns with that decision and addresses inadmissibility for falsely claiming U.S. citizenship for any purpose or benefit under the INA or any other federal or state law, provided that the alien made the false claim on or after Sept. 30, 1996.
Indian American Georgia Tech. Professor Developing Low Cost, Portable Emergency Ventilator BY A STAFF WRITER ATLANTA, GA-A research team headed by Devesh Ranjan of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, has created a prototype for a low-cost, portable emergency ventilator that uses electronic sensors and computer control to manage key clinical parameters such as respiration rate, tidal volume (the amount of air moved into and out of the lungs during each cycle), inspiration and expiration ratio, and pressure on the lungs. The Open-AirVentGT was designed to address acute respiratory distress syndrome, a common complication for COVID-19 patients that causes their lungs to stiffen, requiring their breathing to be assisted by ventilators. The new device endeavors to make breathing more natural by allowing patients to trigger their own breaths instead of relying on a respiration rate pre-set in the device. “Our primary goal is to give the clinicians control over key parameters of the ventilator’s
there are typically no long term consequences,” she continued. “However, if the syndrome is not identified early, there can be long term consequences, most commonly related to ongoing heart problems.” Dr. Barbot said cases have also been identified in the U.K., Philadelphia, and Boston. Dr. Baer says he’s treated five children with those symptoms at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital in Hackensack, though none of them tested positive for COVID-19. He says adults are exhibiting similar symptoms when their immune systems overreact while fighting off the virus. Dr. Baer says his patients all recovered with supporting care, including antibiotics and blood pressure medication. The city’s Department of Health issued a health alert asking doctors to report similar cases. Hospitals are also working with the state Department of Health and the American Academy of Pediatrics to track, report, and determine what’s causing these unusual cases.
functionality,” Ranjan, an Indian American professor and associate chair in Georgia Tech’s George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, stated in a Georgia Tech press release. “Once the system is initialized, a small on-board computer operates to maintain the setpoints governing respiration in an unattended way. The sensors and computer provide more control and real-time monitoring for doctors and other medical staff.” Ranjan and his team have consulted the Global Center for Medical Innovation regarding steps necessary to seek FDA Emergency Use Authorization for the ventilator design. The team has already been approached by Georgia Tech alumni in Ghana and India to set up manufacturing lines in their countries. The team is reviewing how best to release the design for others to mass produce these devices to meet the global needs, according to the Georgia Tech press release
Prof. Devesh Ranjan
“The impact of this could be significant if other parts of the world are hit by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Ranjan said in the press release. “Having equipment that can be made quickly where it is needed and with the kind of control system doctors need could really help address the worldwide impact of this virus.”
BY A STAFF WRITER AUSTIN, TX- - Harish Kotecha, founder of Hindu Charities for America, and who came from Uganda, encourages philanthropy in the Indian American community with the motto “serve where we live.” “There is poverty here, too. I thought it would be so great if the Indian community worked as one to serve those in need in the U.S.,” Kotecha said recently. Since the inception of HC4A in 2009, hundreds of Indian Americans have been inspired to raise over a million dollars. The HC4A mission is to “bridge income disparities through education.” School supplies, a backpack program, and scholarships form the pillars of the educationbased giving for the volunteers at HC4A. In 2017, President Donald Trump honored Kotecha with the president’s “Lifetime Achievement Award.” Having made this model work in Austin, Texas, Kotecha and his team worked on expanding HC4A’s presence to Southern California, Houston and Dallas, the release added. As HC4A volunteers celebrate 10 years of relentless hard work, at the Asian American Resource Center, Austin, none are ready to just sit on their laurels, it said. They cheer on as they see a 2030 vision board of Shahrukh Khan and Jennifer Lopez coming for the Gala night celebrations and a fundraising goal of a 100 million dollars, it added. 2019 was the biggest year for HC4A as they were successful in establishing an irrevocable endowment fund for scholarships that will be disbursed by their partners at Austin Community College and Capital Idea. This year about $150,000 in fellowships will go to students of various ethnic communities.

Indian American High School Student Names NASA’s First Mars Helicopter
BY A STAFF WRITER NORTHPORT, AL— An Alabama high school student named NASA’s first Mars helicopter that will be deployed to the Red Planet later this summer. Ingenuity, the name submitted by Vaneera Rupani, was selected for the 4 pound (1.8 kilograms) solar-powered helicopter, NASA said in a statement on Wednesday. The name coined by the junior at Tuscaloosa County High School in Northport was just one of the 28,000 names that were submitted during NASA’s “Name the Rover” essay contest for K-12 students across the United States. “The ingenuity and brilliance of people working hard to overcome the challenges of interplanetary travel are what allow us all to experience the wonders of space exploration,” Rupani wrote in her essay. “Ingenuity is what allows people to accomplish amazing things, and it allows us to expand our horizons to the edges of the universe.” In March, the organization selected the name “Perseverance” for the Mars Rover

based on a Virginian student’s essay, but decided to come back to the submitted essays to also pick a name for the helicopter that will accompany the Rover on the trip to the planet.
NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine then selected Rupani’s name for the helicopter, noting that the name “encapsulates the values that our helicopter tech demo will showcase” when it takes off to Mars. Alabama Sen.

‘Fierce Helpers’: Nonprofit Co-founded by Indian American Student Giving Back to the Community BY A STAFF WRITER CUPERTINO, CA- In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, a handful of Indian American students across the U.S. are stepping up to help. San Francisco Bay Area, Calif.-based Ramana Kolady is among the students who are giving back to the community. The novel coronavirus outbreak has affected everyone to varying degrees but the group it poses the most threat to comprises of older adults and people who have severe underlying medical conditions. These people, with compromised immune systems, are at a higher risk for developing more serious complications from the virus, so for them going out to shop for groceries or other essential supplies is extremely risky. Step in Kolady’s organization, Fierce Helpers. Founded by Kolady and Alexander Wang, the Cupertino, Calif.-based organization aims to help alleviate some of the stress on these communities by working to bring groceries and other supplies right to them. The volunteer-run organization consists of teenagers who offer free and safe delivery of these items. This isn’t the first time Kolady is working to help out seniors. He has prior experience working with seniors through his nonprofit organization,
Richard Shelby also congratulated Rupani for the honor. Ingenuity, which will be deployed to Mars attached to the “Perseverance” Rover in July or August, has already completed testing in a NASA simulation chamber in Southern California. After it arrives on Mars, NASA said the helicopter will maintain a cover to be protected from debris until the timing is right for the aircraft to operate on the planet by itself. If Ingenuity is successful during its 31day experimental trip, the small helicopter will prove that powered flights can be accomplished on Mars, NASA said. This year’s mission to Mars is part of a program that also includes missions to the moon to prepare for a possible human exploration of the Red Planet, NASA said. According to the organization, they plan to land the first woman and the next man on the moon in 2024, and set up a continued human presence “on and around” the moon in eight years so they can use it to send astronauts to Mars.

Fierce Helpers is currently seeking more volunteers and those interested can register on its website www.fiercehelpers.com. Requesting a delivery is pretty simple. Here’s how it works: fill out the ‘Request a Delivery’ form on the website; a volunteer will get in touch; and payment can be made in one of three ways – call the store in advance to place the order and pay with your credit card over the phone, letting them know someone else will be picking it up, or provide the volunteer with cash before they complete the order, or reimburse the volunteer after they pick up. They are hoping more and more people are able to avail the free service. “If you know anyone who could use this service, please feel free to let them know about Fierce Helpers and how they can simply place an order and have it delivered to them, ensuring their safety,” reads a message on the Students and Seniors United website.
Janet Napolitano
BY A STAFF WRITER OAKLAND, CA- University of California’s outgoing president Janet Napolitano addressed the struggles of the state’s university system amid the coronavirus pandemic in a webinar with the Bay Area Council on Thursday. All 10 UC campuses are closed, and Napolitano said, “Reopening will be more difficult than shutting down was and there are lots of things to take into account.” When the schools reopen in the fall, the experience offered to students will be different compared to what it was before COVID-19. “I think it’s fair to say that none of our campuses will be fully reopened, like we’ve turned a light switch and all of a sudden COVID-19 was gone and it went away,” said Napolitano, who will be with the UC system through May. “I think what we are exploring is a mix where there will be some material that is delivered in a classroom or lab setting and other classes continue to be online.” Before opening, the campuses will need to meet certain standards and requirements geared toward the safety of teachers and students. In the near future, Napolitano said significant measures will need to be made to cut costs.

FDA Issues Emergency Use Authorization for Potential COVID-19 Treatment FDA NEWS RELEASE WASHINGTON, DC-Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update: FDA Issues Emergency Use Authorization for Potential COVID-19 Treatment Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization for the investigational antiviral drug remdesivir for the treatment of suspected or laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 in adults and children hospitalized with severe disease. While there is limited information known about the safety and effectiveness of using remdesivir to treat people in the hospital with COVID-19, the investigational drug was shown in a clinical trial to shorten the time to recovery in some patients. “FDA’s emergency authorization of remdesivir, two days after the National Institutes of Health’s clinical trial showed promising results, is a significant step forward in battling COVID-19 and another example of the Trump Administration moving as quickly as possible to use science to save lives,” said HHS Secretary Alex Azar. “NIH, FDA, and scientists across America and around the world have worked tirelessly with patients to get us this new potential treatment for COVID-19. The seamless cooperation between government and private industry under the President’s all-of-America approach to COVID-19 is getting treatment options to patients in record time.” The emergency use authorization allows for remdesivir to be distributed in the U.S. and administered intravenously by health care providers, as appropriate, to treat suspected or laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 in adults and children hospitalized with severe disease. Severe disease is defined as patients with low blood oxygen levels or needing oxygen therapy or more intensive breathing support such as a mechanical ventilator. “From day one, the FDA has been committed to expediting the development

and availability of potential COVID-19 treatments. Today’s action is an important step in our efforts to collaborate with innovators and researchers to provide sick patients timely access to new therapies where appropriate, while at the same time supporting research to further evaluate whether they are safe and effective,” said FDA Commissioner Stephen M. Hahn, M.D. “There’s tremendous interest among all parties to identify and arm ourselves with medicines to combat COVID-19, and through our Coronavirus Treatment Acceleration Program, the FDA is working around-the-clock and using every tool at our disposal to speed these efforts.” Based on evaluation of the emergency use authorization criteria and the scientific evidence available, it was determined that it
PA Merchants Alarmed by Mobs of People Shoplifting BY A STAFF WRITER PHILADELPHIA, PA- -- A group of 20 merchants in Philadelphia say policies set forth by the city during the COVID-19 pandemic has caused an alarming epidemic of shoplifting, and in some cases, mobs of people. In one incident at the 7-Eleven store at 22nd & Market streets, video shows a group of about eight to 10 kids come in and spread out throughout the store. Each starts collecting items from different shelves and refrigerators before suddenly running for the door. The owner says this has happened two to three times since the pandemic. “Actually, I’ve been facing a lot of shoplifting. Every day I try to call and sometimes when I call 911 nobody answers,” said Mohammed Karim, a store owner. At another store, another mob enters a store, including a young boy. Within minutes, the same thing happens with people running for the door with various items, the clerk running after them to no avail. In other instances, merchants say people are filling their back packs with merchandise seemingly with no fear the law will catch up with them. “People are coming in the store, they’re loading their bag and they’re actually telling us the law, that they’re not gonna get locked
up,” said merchant Sukhvir Thinb. Merchants say store clerks are terrified with what is going on. “I have three employees quit last week, they don’t want to work anymore because of safety issues,” said Manzoor Chughta, president of the Delaware Valley Franchise Owners Association. “A mob entering a business sounds like more than just shoplifting, it sounds terroristic. If police are making arrests in cases like that, our office would charge appropriately,” said Jane Roh, spokeswoman with the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. Due to the pandemic, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw ordered arrests be delayed for non-violent crimes such as theft, drugs or prostitution. “I think broadcasting no arrests for retail theft was the biggest mistake the city ever made,” said store owner Sukhvir Thinb.
is reasonable to believe that remdesivir may be effective in treating COVID-19, and that, given there are no adequate, approved, or available alternative treatments, the known and potential benefits to treat this serious or life-threatening virus currently outweigh the known and potential risks of the drug’s use. The EUA also requires that fact sheets that provide important information about using remdesivir in treating COVID-19 be made available to health care providers and patients, including dosing instructions, potential side effects and drug interactions. Possible side effects of remdesivir include: increased levels of liver enzymes, which may be a sign of inflammation or damage to cells in the liver; and infusion-related reactions, which may include low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, sweating, and shivering.
Following the declaration by the Secretary of HHS that circumstances exist justifying the emergency use of unapproved products, the FDA may issue an emergency use authorization to allow unapproved medical products or unapproved uses of approved medical products to be used in an emergency to diagnose, treat, or prevent serious or lifethreatening diseases or conditions caused by chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats when there are no adequate, approved, and available alternatives. The issuance of an EUA is different than FDA approval. In determining whether to issue an EUA, the FDA evaluates the available evidence and carefully balances any known or potential risks of any unproven products with any known or potential benefits of making them available during the emergency. The EUA was issued to Gilead Sciences Inc. The FDA previously allowed for study of the investigational drug under clinical trials, as well as expanded access use for individual patients and through a multipatient expanded access program coordinated by Gilead. The EUA will be effective until the declaration that circumstances exist justifying the authorization of the emergency use of drugs and biologics for prevention and treatment of COVID-19 is terminated and may be revised or revoked if it is determined the EUA no longer meets the statutory criteria for issuance. The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. Demers and U.S. Attorney Erica H. MacDonald for the District of Minnesota today announced a federal criminal complaint against MUHAMMAD MASOOD, 28, charging him with attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization. MASOOD, who was arrested earlier today at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, made his initial appearance before Magistrate Judge David T. Schultz in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis, Minnesota. MASOOD was ordered to remain in custody pending a formal detention hearing, which is scheduled for Tuesday, March 24, 2020. According to the allegations in the complaint, MASOOD, a licensed medical doctor in Pakistan, was formerly employed as a Research Coordinator at a medical clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, under an H-1B Visa. Between January 2020 and March 2020, MASOOD made several statements to others, including pledging his allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) and its leader, and expressing his desire to travel to Syria to fight for ISIS. MASOOD also expressed his desire to conduct “lone wolf” terrorist attacks in the United States. On Feb. 21, 2020, MASOOD purchased a plane ticket from Chicago, Illinois to Amman, Jordan, and from there planned to travel to Syria. On March 16, 2020, MASOOD’s travel plans changed because Jordan closed its borders to incoming travel due to the Coronavirus pandemic. MASOOD made a new plan to fly from Minneapolis to Los Angeles to meet up with an individual who he believed would assist
Muhammad Masood
him with travel via cargo ship to deliver him to ISIS territory. On March 19, 2020, MASOOD traveled from Rochester to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) to board a flight bound for Los Angeles, California. Upon arrival at MSP, MASOOD checked in for his flight and was subsequently arrested by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. This case is the result of an investigation conducted by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Andrew R. Winter and Timothy C. Rank, with assistance from Trial Attorney Katie Sweeten of the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section.
