elcoming new Indian ambassador Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, United States President Barack Obama told him that the two countries could accomplish a lot together Obama also wished Jaishankar success in his responsibilities as he presented his credentials to the president at the Oval Office of the White House on March 11 according to the Indian Embassy. Jaishankar, in turn, conveyed warm greetings from President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Obama and Michelle Obama. Jaishankar also assured Obama of his commitment to expand key pillars of the bilateral relationship, including economic relations and trade ties, defense and security, energy, science and technology and global issues. Jaishankar was second of the six ambassadors who presented their credentials to Obama one by one in a traditional ceremony that marks the formal beginning of an

Welcome Sikhs in army: Congress to Pentagon ARUN KUMAR,WASHINGTON
O WASHINGTON: Even as a visiting United States official indicated the country’s willingness to work with India’s new leader post elections whoever it may be, Washington insisted there is no change in its visa policy in respect of Narendra Modi. Bhartiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate was “welcome to apply for a visa, and obviously that would be considered through the normal process”, State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters on March 7 repeating an old formulation. “We don’t speculate on visas, of
course, and our position hasn’t changed on this case,” she said when asked to clarify remarks made by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Nisha Biswal to a TV channel in response to a specific question about Modi. “I would just say that the United States has welcomed every leader of this vibrant democracy, and that a democratically elected leader of India will be a welcome partner,” Biswal was quoted as saying when asked if Narendra Modi would be granted a U.S. visa if he becomes the prime minister. —IANS
mid lingering diplomatic row and frictions over patent laws and visa issue, senior United States diplomat Nisha Desai Biswal said Washington is committed and focused on growing trade and investments with India and willing to resolve the difference through talks. “Like any trading partners, we do have our differences, and the willingness to talk about them indicates that we are in fact confident, mature partners,” said Biswal, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia. Biswal, who was on her first visit to India after she assumed
her new office, said: “We want to work with India, trade with and invest in India, innovate with India, and grow with India.” “We need to keep focused on growing our trade and investment ties. The United States are committed to this,” she said while addressing an event at the American Center here. Biswal was the first top-level U.S. official to visit New Delhi after the recent India-U.S. standoff over the treatment meted out to Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade in New York. Strip search and arrest of the Indian female diplomat in New York caused a diplomatic row between the two countries.

Maoists’ deadly ambush kills 16 Over 200 guerrillas ambush a patrol party of CRPF in Gheeram Ghati in Chhattisgarh IANS, RAIPUR
F
ifteen security men and a civilian were killed on March 11 when Maoists sprang a deadly ambush on a patrol in a thickly forested area of Chhattisgarh, a short distance from the spot where 27 people were gunned down last year. Over 200 guerrillas ambushed with indiscriminate fire and bomb attack a patrol of 50-55 men from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and state police on a remote stretch of a forested road in Gheeram Ghati in Sukma district, about 500 km south of Raipur in the Bastar region. The Maoists then walked away with AK-47 assault rifles of the slain security personnel. “It was a deadly ambush,” Additional Director General of Police Mukesh Gupta told IANS. He said the ambush site in Sukma district appeared to be near the place where Maoists massacred 27 people, including state Congress president Nand Kumar Patel, his son Dinesh, and former legislator Uday Mudali-
Rahul Gandhi booked for defaming RSS LUCKNOW: A defamation case was filed against Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi for saying at a rally in Maharashtra on March 6 that the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) killed Mahatma Gandhi. The case was filed in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district on March 11. The case, filed by Sanu Shukla, a lawyer and also the convenor of People for Legal Aid Society, contends that the investigative agencies and the Kapoor Commission had given a clean chit to the RSS from any direct or indirect role in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. —IANS

The district, which shares its border with Chhattisgarh’s Sukma

leven people were killed on March 12 in avalanches and house collapses in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. A senior police officer told IANS that two soldiers were killed when an avalanche hit the Batra camp of the army in Kargil district early on March 12. Three Nepali labourers were also killed in another avalanche in Kaksar area of Kargil district. “The labourers were working in a stone quarry when the tragedy struck,” the officer said. “Four members of a family were buried alive under
another avalanche in Balsaran Danau Kandi Marg village in Kulgam district of the Valley.” A woman was killed in a house collapse in Qazigund area as the roof of the house gave way under heavy snowfall, and another woman died in a house collapse in Shopian district.

There was confusion over Tuesday’s toll, with initial reports saying 20 security personnel were killed. The toll figure was later revised down to 15 security personnel and one civilian killed. Gupta said even as the Maoist attack triggered a gun battle, the guerrillas also exploded bombs, causing more damage to the security patrol that was passing through the area. Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said in New Delhi: “Eleven CRPF people have died and four policemen from Chhattisgarh (were killed). One civilian has died...This is the second (attack) in the same area.” “We will fight against Naxal (Maoist) movement,” he said, adding it cannot be immediately said “whose failure” it was. President Pranab Mukherjee condemned the attack, saying such attacks “must be put down with a firm hand”.
education of women, Modi stressed they should have the right to take decisions on the matters concerning their lives, such as career choices, timing of marriages and size of families. The Gujarat chief minister was interacting with women from 1,500 places in India and abroad, on the occasion of the International Women’s Day, through
video conferencing from the Bharatiya Janata Party headquarters in his second edition of the ‘Chai Pe Charcha’ program. “If we educate women, we are educating not just a family but educating also the generation,” said Modi. He said safety and security of women is the joint responsibility of the administration and the police.
Subrata Roy
K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice J.S. Kehar said that they would hear the matter Thursday as they have to go through the pleadings. At the outset of the hearing, senior counsel Ram Jethmalani told the court that in the A.R. Antulay case, the Supreme Court is obliged to rectify its own errors. Having said so, Jethmalani noted that it is embarrassing to tell the two judges that their order was not right. “It is a deep embarrassment for me. If your lordship wants to hear me, then I have no problem,” said Jethmalani. Justice Kehar then said: “We will see if we are embarrassed by the pleadings. We will see it. You should know you have drafted it.” The court directed the hearing of the matter at 2 p.m. on March 13. Roy had challenged the March 4 order seeking it to be set aside.

FRIDAY, MARCH 14, 2014 MIDWEST EDITION
Congress down,
BJP far from Mission 272 Though BJP appears ahead of Congress, there is still no certainty that the saffron party will be able to accomplish its ‘Mission 272-plus’ AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
N
ext month’s general elections may prove to be the most significant ever because they can determine the fate of the Congress’ first family. It is open to question whether in the event of the party’s defeat, as is anticipated, the NehruGandhi dynasty can continue to play its present dominant role. True, the family has survived other setbacks, notably in 1977 and in 1989. But it had the advantage in those days of being headed by charismatic leaders. That was the reason the Congress survived the crushing blows it received in 1977 to return to power in 1980 by raising its tally of Lok Sabha seats from 153 to 353. Four years later, its tally went up to
415 under another popular leader, Rajiv Gandhi. This time, however, the party cannot claim that it is led by widely acclaimed leaders. Neither Sonia Gandhi nor Rahul Gandhi have the appeal and commanding personality of Indira Gandhi, or the charm and modern outlook of Rajiv Gandhi till he was tarred by the Bofors howitzer scandal. There is another disadvantage for the Congress this time. Its 1977 defeat was at the hands of a hastily assembled group of parties ranging from disgruntled Congressmen like Morarji Desai, angry over Indira Gandhi’s rise in the party, to the Jana Sangh (now BJP) which merged with the newly-formed Janata Party. Moreover, the latter’s inability to provide a semblance of effective gov-
ernance revived Indira Gandhi’s image even as the popular anger against her emergency rule of 197577 subsided. In 1984, a sympathy wave over her assassination, coupled with Rajiv Gandhi’s Mr. Clean image, helped the Congress. No such extraordinary circumstances — suppression of civil rights or a tragic death — exist now. Instead, a replay of the Bofors scam on a far wider scale along with economic slowdown has eroded the Congress’ standing. If the party had leaders who were in sync with an aspirational India, the scene might have
been different. But Sonia Gandhi does not seem to have outgrown the years when she lived as a young bride in Indira Gandhi’s household. The ideas which she imbibed from her formidable mother-in-law — socialism as an ideology and cynicism as policy — continue to influence her. Not only that, she has passed them on to Rahul Gandhi, who may be well-meaning and compassionate, as Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said on television, but not particularly politically astute or with economic insight.
The result is that mother and son are unable to comprehend that the country has changed since 1991 because of the opening up of the economy. The common people are no longer enamored of official sops and subsidies. Instead, they look to economic growth and increased opportunities for their livelihood. In the event of a setback, therefore, the dynasty’s flawed understanding of the political scene is bound to be questioned. But the jury is out on whether Congressmen, so long dependent on the family for guidance, will find the courage to break free. However, there is a silver lining for the Congress. It is the scene reminiscent of 1977 and 1989 and also the period between 1996 and 1998, when there was no stable government at the centre. Although the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Narendra Modi is well ahead of Rahul Gandhi in the prime ministerial race, according the opinion polls, there is still no certainty that the BJP will be able to accomplish its “Mission 272-plus”, as it highlighted at a recent convention. It will be happy if it can reach the 182-mark which it did in 1998 and 1999, but there are doubts on this score.

which resembles Kaifesh’s official campaign web site, it was paid for by a super political action committee called Indian Americans for Freedom, which lists Goel’s address. Under U.S. law, Super PACs, officially known as “independentexpenditure only committees”, can engage in unlimited political spending as long as they don’t make contributions to candidate campaigns or parties. The PAC was formed by Indian-American businessman Shalli Kumar, a supporter of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. Endorsed by former House speaker Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain, a 2012 U.S. Republican Party presidential nomination aspirant, and former 8th District Congressman Joe Walsh, Goel said

Indian writer wins Yale prize Washington: Indian writer Pankaj Mishra is one of the eight writers from seven countries winning a $150,000 Yale University prize each in recognition of their achievements and to support their ongoing work. Mishra, an Indian essayist, memoirist, travel writer and novelist, won the Windham Campbell Literature Prize in non-fiction category, The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale announced. “Pursuing high standards of literary style, Pankaj Mishra gives us new narratives about the evolution of modern Asia,” the New Haven, Connecticut based institution said. “He charts the journey from the Indian small town to the metropolis and rebuffs imperialist cliches with equal verve.” “Such delightful news!” said Mishra. “As a freelancer obliged to make a living from writing, you are always scrounging for bits of time in which to write the next book, and this wonderfully generous prize will help me secure a long undistracted period.” Mishra’s work “expands our understanding of the encounter between Western and Non-western culture”, the announcement said. “His prose is distinguished by a mellifluous yet precise phrasing whose generous intelligence speaks to the general reader and specialist alike.” In addition to a novel, The Romantics, Mishra has published four works of non-fiction: Butter Chicken in Ludhiana: Travels in Small Town India; An End to Suffering: the Buddha in the World; Temptations of the West: How to Be Modern in India, Pakistan, Tibet, and

From the Ruins of Empire, his most recent book, attempts a re-visioning of the geo-politics of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries from multiple Asian perspectives. His literary and political essays and long-form journalism regularly appear in The New York Review of Books, The London Review of Books, The Guardian, The Hindu and elsewhere. Other winners in the three categories are: in fiction, Aminatta Forna (Sierra Leone), Nadeem Aslam (Pakistan), and Jim Crace (Britain); in non-fiction John Vaillant (United States/Canada); and in drama, Kia Corthron (United States), Sam Holcroft (Britain) and Noëlle Janaczewska (Australia). All eight writers will accept the prize in person at a ceremony at Yale on September 15. The ceremony will be followed by a three-day literary festival celebrating the work of the prize recipients.
she has no control over the IAFF organization. “I cannot account on anybody else’s actions,” Goel said. “I cannot tell you, because I do not know where the PAC is.” However, Cook County Republican Chairman Aaron Del Mar said he’s seen enough. He wants Goel to drop out of the race. “I felt Ms. Goel needs to step out of the race,” Del Mar was quoted as saying. “Her behavior regarding this campaign has been unbecoming of a GOP (Republican) congressional candidate.” “One person’s opinion means nothing to me,” Goel said, according to WLS TV. One of the founders of the Indian Americans of Freedom said the organization is a social organization and not a political action committee. There is a complaint on file with the Federal Elections Commission regarding the group’s activities during this campaign.
fter a two-week 90-round gruelling battle, a 13-yearold Indian American student Kush Sharma finally broke a tie in a local county contest to go to the National Spelling Bee competition. The Indian champ on March 8 faced his 11-year-old adversary Sophia Hoffman again to resume the Jackson County Spelling Bee in Kansas City, Missouri, that had ended in a tie on February 22 when the judges ran out of words. The two had eliminated 23 other contestants and went another 47 rounds against each other in their previous encounter, But in the end, in the 29th round Kush, a seventhgrader from Kansas City, won with not a tongue twister but a simple word —
‘definition’ after Sophia, a Lee’s Summit fifth-grader too stumbled on her word — ‘stifling’ — in Round 28. After an appeal, a judges’ huddling to review a recording and then a break, “Kush stepped to the microphone in the bone quiet of Helzberg Auditorium at the Kansas City Central Library”, as the Star recounted. nailing earlier killer words like “hemerocallis”, and “jacamar”, Kush spelled “definition” after first, of course, asking for its definition. “Behind him, Sophia was first to clap, happy for the friend she got to know in passing 75 times back and forth to the microphone,” Star said. In their previous epic battle, the two had traded ‘madeleine’ for ‘scherzo’, ‘mukhtar’ for ‘bobbejaan’, and on and on for more than five hours before the judges ran out of words resulting in a rare tie. But Scripps officials rejected a groundswell push on Twitter to “Send Them Both!” to the nationals in Washington D.C. in May. In March 8 contest, neither skipped a beat until Sophia’s miss in Round 28. During the ensuing break, she gathered with her family, and Kush saw Sophia crying. He walked over and bent to her. “Stop crying or you’re going to make me cry,” he told her, according to the Star. She looked up and laughed.

I’m a big Rajinikanth fan, says Shah Rukh CHENNAI: Bollywood supestar Shah Rukh Khan on March 9 said he is such a big fan of Rajinikanth that he decided to attend the audio launch of his film Kochadaiiyaan. “I came here for three reasons. Firstly, like all of you, I am a big Rajinikanth fan,” Shah Rukh told reporters at the launch. Reminiscing his earlier days, SRK said that many years ago when he landed in Mumbai, he went to see the shooting of a Hindi film starring Rajinikanth and learned an important lesson after observing the southern superstar. “I saw from far away that he was standing in front of a big mirror and practising throwing cigarette in his mouth. “There were a lot of actors minding their own business, but Rajini sir kept on practising. omen in pink sarees dot the lush rural landscape. They want revenge. Men, all raunchy paunchy rapists, leery bribe seekers and rowdy merry makers, get their comeuppance in the hands of these pink ladies armed with sickles, sticks, knives and gumption. Director Soumik Sen’s film is designed as a flamboyant loud and message-driven film on women empowerment. In parts it looks like a government-sponsored documentary on rural development with Madhuri in it to ensure people care and respond to the message. This would be as good as any place to reveal that the makers’ claims that the film is NOT based on Sampat Pal’s mis-
sionary zeal, is blatantly untrue. From the color of the saree to the whole idea of making the male species look and feel really really saree..sorry, sorrry...Bro, this is Sampat’s kingdom all the way. If you have any doubts on that
score, check out Nishtha Jain’s excellent documentary Gulaabi Gang clevery released to preempt this imposter’s endeavour. The problem is Madhuri Dixit hardly looks like the rural Mata Hari-Om. She tries hard. Oh boy!
Does she try! The Yankee twang is put away firmly from public view and replaced by a sexy village tongue that rolls out stinging jibes at corrupt netas, male and female villains who enunciate cheesy lines with the lip-smacking relish of junior artistes in Prakash Jha’s trademark parables of rural oppression. Trouble is, director Soumik Sen’s vision lacks the socio-historical perspective of Jha’s cinema. Sen’s conscience bleeds all over the place. He seems to invest a great deal of idealism in his saga of girl power. But he forgets to apply brakes on his narrative so that very often the plot hurls forward in uncontrollable spasms of sarcastic stock-taking. — Subhash K.Jha

Deepika jealous of Kangana? MUMBAI: Actress Deepika Padukone, who was on a roll with one hit performance after another in 2013, is jealous of another actress! She is in awe of Kangana Ranaut’s work in the recently released Queen. “I have seen Queen’and I am jealous of her performance, I think she was outstanding,” the 28year-old said here at the HT Mumbai Most Stylish Awards. Deepika also praised Queen director Vikas Bahl for portraying a woman’s emotions so beautifully. “What a beautiful film. I think if you are a woman and have been in a relationship, just the way he has captured the emotion of the girl and the way he has portrayed it, it’s one of the best films I have seen in the longest time and it’s outstanding,” Deepika said. Queen hit the theatres on March 7 and is getting rave reviews from both critics and audiences. It also stars Rajkummar Rao and tells the story of a girl who goes for her honeymoon alone and captures her journey of self-discovery.

Kangana is endearing: Arbaaz MUMBAI: Kangana Ranaut seems to have swept the entire Hindi film fraternity off its feet with her performance in Queen. Actor-director Arbaaz Khan is the latest celebrity to be floored by the actress’ performance in the movie. He has called her an extremely gifted actor. “I am going to personally talk to her (Kangana) and congratulate her. She is fabulous in the film, she is so natural, she is so gifted and talented. In this film you can see her come into her own, she is so endearing, watchable and this film is beautiful,” the 46-year-old said following a special screening of Queen.
Ali Zafar on cloud nine MUMBAI: The Karachi premiere of Bollywood film Total Siyappa was rocking, says its lead hero, Pakistani actor Ali Zafar. “The Karachi premiere rocked on March 6. We got a massive applause. The Lahore premiere at the Super Cinema Vogue Theatre was equally successful,” Ali said on phone from Karachi. According to a source from Karachi, the film’s Indo-Pak love story was warmly accepted by the Pakistani audiences. “They laughed at all the Indo-Pak jokes. It was an evening of fun and no one was getting hyper over cross-border issues.”

Rajat’s awkward moment with Naseer MUMBAI: Filmmaker-actor Rajat Kapoor says he faced an awkward moment while casting for his film Ankhon Dekhi. Kapoor’s first choice for the main role was Sanjay Mishra, but when he couldn’t contact the actor, he approached Naseeruddin Shah for the same. As luck would have it, when Naseer gave his nod for the role, Sanjay too returned and the director found himself in a fix. “When Sanjay had become unavailable and unreachable, I approached Naseer sir. But fortunately or unfortunately he (Sanjay) came back,” Kapoor told IANS. “Meanwhile, Naseer sir had read the script in three days and he liked it and by that time Sanjay had come back and I must say it was a bad timing, terrible timing.” “But Sanjay was my first choice and I went through a lot of shit. I told Naseeruddin Shah I will give him some other role in the same film, but he said he will not do it. Then I wrote a long mail and he replied nicely, saying Sanjay deserves it and all. But it was an awkward moment.” A quirky film, Ankhon Dekhi revolves around Raje Bauji (Sanjay), a man in his late 50s, living out a dreary but eventful life in a small house in old Delhi, in which he lives with his extended family.
MUMBAI: Actress Soha Ali Khan is awaiting the start of shooting schedule of her next project, which is based on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. “My next film is on 1984 Sikh riots and we will start shooting quite soon,” Soha said here on March 10 at an event held to announce the winner of Classmate Spell Bee 2014 championship. “National Award winner Shivaji Patil will be directing it and I am looking forward to it,” she added. Soha was recently seen in comedy Mr Joe B. Carvalho. Currently, she is busy with another film Chaarfutiya Chhokare.
Nargis Fakhri tries to sail in two boats MUMBAI: Nargis Fakhri has been dropped from Shaukeen remake. “She had confirmed her dates but then, all of a sudden, she called up from London requesting us to adjust our schedule so she could accommodate a Hollywood film which required her dates between April 20 and 27. “We obliged, but two days later, she told us that she would need another three-four days as the schedule of that film has got stretched,” co-producer Murad Khetani was quoted as saying. It was impractical for the unit to keep waiting so long for the heroine to turn up in a foreign country.
‘Who is afraid of Rishi Kapoor?’ MUMBAI: Ayushmann Khurrana, who made a fruitful debut with Vicky Donor believes that he has a major plus point in the fact that he can act as well as sing. Bollywood currently has a whole lot of young blood, and when asked who does he consider as a competitor from among the likes of Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, Ayushmann said: “There is no competitor as such. I think my biggest plus point is that I am an actor and singer as well.” In Bewakoofiyaan, Ayushmann features with Sonam Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor. The senior Kapoor’s presence in a movie can be unnerving for some, but Ayushmann is not a wee bit nervous about being overshadowed. “I have huge respect for Rishi Kapoor. He is playing a prominent role in the film, but I don’t think I will get overshadowed because at the end of the day, Sonam and I are playing the lead roles in the film,” he said.

Kejriwal rides auto, train in Mumbai Kejriwal dodges media queries all through the journey, BJP calls AAP dramebaaz IANS, MUMBAI
A
AP leader Arvind Kejriwal Wednesday took an auto-rickshaw from the airport to Andheri station from where he traveled in a suburban train during the launch of his campaign in Maharashtra. The BJP said the AAP was a “dramebaaz” party. Maharashtra Home Minister R.R. Patil said that if any laws were violated by the Aam Aadmi Party, action would be taken and payment for damage to any public property would be recovered from it. Welcomed by a huge crowd of AAP activists, a large media contingent and a significant police presence, the former Delhi chief minister stepped out of the Mumbai airport and hailed an auto along with two other party leaders. A contingent of police personnel, media persons and party activists tailed the auto over the entire fivekm distance till Kejriwal alighted near Andheri station east. At least another dozen auto-rickshaws hired in advance by AAP supporters drove in hot pursuit to keep pace with Kejriwal’s auto, and at one point reportedly broke a traffic sig-

nal. Enthusiastic AAP supporters were seen hanging out of the autos and stopping them haphazardly near Andheri station, creating a traffic jam for a few minutes. As he got down, another crowd
cheered and virtually mobbed Kejriwal, who was clad in a skyblue shirt, sleeves partly rolled up, his trademark AAP cap and dark trousers. “I paid the auto fare of `48 for the ride to the auto driver, who was in
turn mobbed by the electronic media for his bytes,” city AAP treasurer Suresh Acharya told IANS. Wearing a bewildered expression, Kejriwal acknowledged the AAP supporters by raising his hands and
saying something but it was drowned in the cacophony. At one point, the former Delhi chief minister even briefly climbed onto a wall near the station to give his supporters a ‘darshan’ (glimpse), but was then whisked away by party activists inside the railway station. He then climbed the bridge to go to Western Railway Andheri platform No.2 and entered a second class compartment of the suburban train which was as usual full. Acharya had bought a single ticket for the Andheri-Churchgate commute. Kejriwal took a window seat in the 11.26 am Andheri-Churchgate regular local train. A few commuters managed to chat with Kejriwal briefly while a college professor was convinced by the AAP leader and joined the party on the spot. All through the journey Kejriwal dodged the media microphones aimed at his face as AAP volunteers craned their necks to catch a glimpse and police personnel jostled with commuters to prevent them from getting too close to the leader. At Churchgate station, some AAP volunteers brought down a metal detector to clear the way for Kejriwal’s entourage.
BJP facing seat blues — despite poll trends Ahead of elections, it

T
he BJP, notwithstanding the many straw polls showing it well ahead of its rivals, is having a fairly tough time internally in declaring seats for its top leaders as also in deciding about some alliances for the Lok Sabha polls, say party sources. “Not everything is hunky dory in the party on decisions concerning seats,” acknowledged a party insider. Among the issues facing the party is the decision on a parliamentary constituency for the party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. The party also has to decide if he will contest from two seats including a constituency in his native Gujarat. There is a strong

pitch in party circles that Modi should contest from Varanasi in UP to bolster the party’s prospects in the crucial state. But there is also the question of accommodating senior
leader Murli Manohar Joshi, the sitting MP from Varanasi. If Modi is fielded from Varanasi, Joshi would have to be accommodated on seat he feels sure of winning.
Regional parties gaining online visibility BANGALORE: Regional political parties such as the Bahujan Samaj Party and the DMK are gaining visibility online, if one goes by their popularity on Google search platform. “Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and its supremo Mayawati are the most searched regional party and leader in the country online,” the global firm said in a statement here on March 12. The BSP is followed by DMK in Tamil Nadu and the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra,
All India Anna DMK (AIADMK) in Tamil Nadu and the ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, Google said. “Incidentally, maximum hits for BSP originate from Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh though it is primarily an Uttar Pradesh-based regional outfit,” a Google spokesman said.
“Regional parties are stacking up and driving search trends,” the spokesman noted. Other most searched parties include TMC, CPI and Akali Dal.
ith the Lok Sabha battle set to kick-start in less than a month, disgruntled politicians across the country are joining political parties offering them greener pastures. Almost all parties have been hit hard, although the Congress, is the worst sufferer amid growing signs that it is set for major electoral reverses. In contrast, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by a confident Narendra Modi, has won over most deserters nationally as well as LJP leader Ramvilas Paswan as an ally in Bihar. Nowhere has the Congress suffered more than in Andhra Pradesh, where its decision to create a Telangana state has led to mass desertions, with N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, the last chief minister, forming a new party. Another prominent defector is D. Purandeswari, a central minister who too dumped the Congress to embrace the BJP. In Telangana region, the Telugu Desam Party saw three former legislators cross over to the Telangana
Rashtra Samithi. Karnataka’s tainted former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa is back with the BJP. One of the biggest blows to the Congress came in Haryana -- the birthplace of ‘Aya Ram, Gaya Ram’ culture -- when Ambala legislator Venod Sharma, a confidant of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, has quit. So has Congress MP and former union minister Rao Inderjit Singh, who has joined the BJP. Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad’s biggest setback was the defection of senior leader Ram Kirpal Yadav, who is joining the BJP. Yadav is now set to take on Lalu Prasad’s daughter in the very constituency where he was not allowed to be the RJD candidate. Another prominent RJD leader, Ghulam Ghouse, has joined the JD-U. So has BJP’s suspended legislator Avinash Kumar Singh. The JD-U has also suffered desertions to the BJP. JD-U legislator Chedi Paswan has gone over to the BJP. Both Congress and BJP suffered in Odisha, with more than a dozen leaders crossed over to ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

2014 PRIMARY ELECTION OVERVIEW
A
BY A STAFF WRITER
t the March 18, 2014 Primary Election, voters will nominate candidates to a wide range of federal, state and local offices. Voters in all 50 wards will nominate candidates for: U.S. Senate; U.S. Representative in each district; Governor and other statewide offices; State Representatives in each district; Cook County Board Commissioners in each district; Appellate, Circuit and Subcircuit Judges; and other state and local offices in the Republican and Democratic parties. Polls will be open on March 18 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Because this is a Primary Election to nominate candidates in each political party, each voter must request one party’s ballot. Democratic and Republican ballots will be available in all precincts. The Green Party ballot will be available only in the 5th Congressional District. Voters also may select non-partisan ballots, but non-partisan ballots offer no offices or candidates – only referendum questions. The selection of a party ballot (or a non-partisan referendum ballot) at a Primary does not affect how a person may vote in future elections. To ensure an election free of trouble or fraud, the Chicago Election Board will have more than 200 investigators assigned to
Election Day duty. Roving investigators will make unannounced inspections of polling places in all wards, and other investigators will be assigned to respond to calls for assistance. Voters who witness anything irregular or encounter a problem on Election Day are urged to call the Board’s “Election Central” hotline at (312) 269-7870. These telephone lines will be staffed by Board personnel and attorneys versed in election law. “Election Central” hotlines will be operational on Election Day only. On Election Day, registered voters may cast ballots only at the polling place assigned to their precinct. New with this election, the Chicago Election Board will be introducing Electronic Poll Books to check-in voters on Election Day at all 2,069 precincts in the city. The Electronic Poll Books will replace the paper poll books and provide Election Judges in each precinct with updated records from Early Voting, Absentee Voting and last-minute voter registrations.

ark Ridge, IL-- The Consul General of India, Dr. Ausaf Sayeed, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White and Illinois State Senator Julie Morrison, were among the dignitaries attending. A Red Sari Evening on March 8 at the Art Institute of Chicago. Modeled after the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women initiative and its red dress, A Red Sari Evening was organized to raise awareness of the prevalence of heart disease in the South Asian community. It was hosted by the South Asian Cardiovascular Center at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and Advocate Medical Group and the American Heart Association. This first, highly successful collaboration between the South Asian Cardiovascular Center and the American Heart Association helped to educate and garner support from prominent leaders in the South Asian community, as well as state and local government leaders. Over 60 different community organizations were represented. ABC 7 News Anchor and Reporter, Ravi Baichwal, who was emcee for the evening, told the crowd that his passion for the topic is very personal. Baichwal’s father experienced a heart attack at a very young age. His mother was also
in the audience. Heart disease affects South Asian women and men at a disproportionate, often fatal level, when compared to others. Nearly one third of cardiac deaths occur under the age of 65 and while South Asians only account for 17% of the global population, they bear 60% of the world’s heart disease burden. In particular, South Asian women have at least a 30% increased risk of heart disease related death when compared to Caucasian women. South Asians are individuals who derive their ethnic origins from the Indian Subcontinent made up of countries such as India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. As part of the event, leaders from the South Asian Cardiovascular Center, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and the American Heart Association signed a memorandum of understanding to signify the start of a collaboration to educate and reduce the cardiovascular risk in the South Asian community. The aim is to reach the South-Asian community with life-saving health messages. Through community and media outreach, the organizations will help the South Asian community identify and reduce risk factors for heart disease and stroke, understand the warning signs and prevent the recurrence of cardiovascular disease.
The Electronic Poll Books also will provide assistance and direction to any voters who arrive in the wrong polling places. The Electronic Poll Books have the capacity to print the name and location of any Chicago voter’s correct precinct polling place. Voters who have cast ballots in Grace Period Voting or Early Voting cannot return to change their votes for any reason. Attempting to vote more than once is a felony. Judges in each polling place will see on the Electronic Poll Books which voters have already cast ballots. In the event the voter believes an error was made, the voter may ask the Election Judges for a Provisional Ballot. The Chicago Election Board web site at chicagoelections.com provides: • Every voter’s registration status • The March 18 polling place for the voter’s address • Sample ballots • And the voter’s Early Voting/Absentee Voting status. For more information before Election Day, voters may visit the web site or call (312) 269-7900. To prepare for the March 18, 2014 Primary Election, the Election Board sent a mailing to each of the 1.1 million registered-voter
households in Chicago to supply information on Early Voting, Absentee Voting and the polling place assigned to the precinct for that address. Polls will be open on March 18 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Early Voting will be offered through Sat., March 15 at 51 locations in the city. Each Early Voting site will be open daily through March 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Voters also have the option of in-person Absentee Voting at the Chicago Election Board at 69 W. Washington St. from 9 a.m. to noon on Sun., March 16 and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mon., March 17. A voter may cast a provisional ballot if the voter claims to be legally registered and the registration record cannot be found, or if the voter believes the record incorrectly reports that the voter has already voted. Provisional ballots will be kept separate from other ballots. The Election Board then determines in the weeks after Election Day if the voter was qualified and whether that voter’s ballot can be added to the count. Eligible ballots are then merged into the election totals. A total of 1,368,290 Chicagoans are registered to vote in the upcoming election at the city’s 2,069 precincts.
Electronic poll books for Chicagoans

t the March 18 Primary Election, the Chicago Election Board will introduce Electronic Poll Books to check-in voters at all 2,069 precincts in the city, Election Board Chairman Langdon D. Neal has announced. “We are very excited about introducing a networked, digital ‘E Poll Book’ solution,” Neal said. “Our goals with the E Poll Books are to: (1) Streamline voter check-in; (2) Make our Election Judges’ work more manageable; and (3) Safeguard our elections by uploading the very latest in voter-registration data and Early and Absentee voting records – to every precinct, all before the polls open on Election Day at 6:00 a.m.” “Simply put, we are replacing the phonebook technology of the past with a networked computer system of the future, a device that can be updated easily in the hour before the voters arrive. Our Election Judges no longer will need to race to find a voter’s page and use a sticker to indicate when that voter used Early Voting or Absentee Voting,” Neal said. “Now, if a voter has already cast a ballot, the E Poll Book will show a clear message, highlighted in red.” “Just as important, E Poll Books give our Judges of Election the ability to guide any voters who arrive in the wrong polling places. Now, the judges will be able to print out that voter’s correct polling place and address. This will help voters get to the right places to cast ballots that will count – and avoid casting a provisional ballot.” Last year, the Chicago Election Board issued a long-range Election Infrastructure Plan that identified E Poll Books among the agency’s top
priorities. Last fall, the Chicago City Council approved funding for the E Poll Book project. Last fall, the Election Board issued a Request for Proposals and received seven responses from all of the nation’s leading E Poll Book vendors. The Election Board chose Omaha-based Election Systems & Software based on a variety of factors, including the company’s history of providing E Poll Books to statewide election jurisdictions with twice the voter populations of Chicago. Total project costs for the ES&S project, including warranties and upgrades, are $2.3 million over five years. “Back when the voter registration rolls closed a month before Election Day, back before no-excuse Early Voting, before no-excuse Absentee Voting, that was when the paper poll book served its purpose,” Neal noted. “But the election calendar today is far more complex. We think it’s going to get even more complicated soon. Today, we have Grace Period registration and Early Voting programs that run through the Saturday before Election Day. In the future, we expect that will run through the Monday before Election Day. The only way to manage those updates responsibly is through a networked E Poll Book solution.” Neal said that another goal of the Election Board was to introduce the technology as soon as possible citywide. “In November, we will have a statewide election, and immediately after that in February, we will have a Municipal Election. This Primary Election was clearly the best alternative to roll out new technology.”

BAL VIHAR TEENS DREAM UP INTERFAITH MURAL FROM CANS BY A STAFF WRITER
O
n February 28 at the St. Louis Science Center, 35 teens representing four different faiths (Hindu, Christian, Muslim, and Jew) came together to create an interfaith image from nearly 2,000 canned food items which ultimately will be donated to local food pantries through Operation Food Search. Inspired by the OMNIMAX film ‘Jerusalem’, the teens created this mural to convey their vision for interfaith dialogue and understanding. Through the collaborative efforts of Center for Indian Cultural Education, also known as Bal Vihar, of St. Louis, and Interfaith Quest, the faith groups raised funds to buy the cans and designed an image depicting their faith symbols and a silhouette of an interfaith skyline. At the end of the month, the cans will be disassembled and donated to Operation Food Search. The Science Center will leave

“perhaps one day we will have the courage to reach across the lines of our faith and discover the other”. That day is now in St. Louis. This is something that Bal Vihar of St. Louis strongly encourages with the kids. Through Bal Vihar, these kids have had the courage to “reach across the lines” of faith by visiting many different houses of worship and having dialogues with their youth. Under the leadership of Beth Damsgaard-Rodriguez and Interfaith Quest, they have had many more opportunities for discussions and service projects with local interfaith teens. The kids always come back more enriched from the experience. This would not have been possible without generous contributions from the Center for Indian Cultural Education Bal Vihar of St. Louis), the YMCA of Greater St. Louis, Islamic Foundation of Greater St. Louis, St. Louis Science Center, and Shop ‘n Save.

HICAGO (IL) -- Embracing Illinois’ communities of diversity and recognizing their economic importance are keys to inclusion in the political process, and is sound public policy, says Dan Rutherford, Illinois State Treasurer and Republican candidate for Governor. Rutherford has appointed several AsianAmerican community leaders who will help develop and shape job creation and economic growth, while cutting government bureaucracy and streamlining government in a Dan Rutherford/Steve Kim administration in Illinois. These volunteer coordinators are demonstrated leaders and represent diverse Asian-American groups such as the Filipino, Korean, Chinese, Pakistani and Indian-American communities throughout Illinois. “These Asian-American communities collectively serve as one of the great engines powering our economy. As with other statewide communities, they are facing challenges including job loss, high taxes and excessive government red tape,” said Rutherford. “These community coordinators will work closely with my Lt. Governor candidate Steve Kim to develop outreach strategies and programs designed to promote job creation through innovation and creativity,” he explained. The Asian-American community leaders who were praised by Rutherford for their initiative and commitment to making Illinois a better place to live in and raise a family were Thomas Cha, Onkar Sangha, Rajinder S. Mago, Jenny Yang, Chris Jang, John Chee, Seung H. Cho, Dong Y. Lee, Dr. Michael Gomez, Andy Justo, and Talat Rashid. “These leaders represent Illinois’ diverse Asian-American communities and their willingness to volunteer demonstrates that our message of protecting the taxpayers’ wallets is resonating throughout Illinois,” Rutherford added.

aha Shivaratri celebrations at Hindu Mandir of Lake County attracted a huge gathering of devotees of Lord Shiva who visited the temple with lots of devotion and dedication from morning till midnight. Besides having Shiva’s ‘darshan’ in unique ‘alankars’ and take Shiva’s ‘Shubha Ashisha’ on this auspicious occasion, the devotees offered milk, flowers, and fruits to the Lord with great enthusiasm. More than 800 devotees from all Indian communities, including young couples and children, showed up to see the Baba Amaranth ‘Him-Lingam’ made up of snow which, indeed, was the chief attraction, and was planned and decorated by temple priests Pt. Anil Joshi Ji and Geetha Patil. Special ‘abhishekams’ and ‘alankars’ for Lord Shiva started from 6 pm onwards by Pt. Anil Joshi Ji and Ganesh Ji with their supporting and chanting devotees.
Three ‘abhishekams’ of Lord Shiva were followed by unique ‘alankars’, namely ‘saga’ (vegetables), ‘phala’ (fruits) and ‘pushpam’ (flowers),a sight that left the devotees stunned. After every ‘anlankar’, special ‘samohika archanas’ were offered with religious zeal. Chanting of melodious Shiva ‘ S t r o t r a m’ , ‘ R u d r a s h t a k a m’ , ‘Lingashtakam’, ‘Panchakshra Mantras’, and many other ‘stotras’ filled the shrine with religiousness and divinity. Devotees sang devotional songs and prayers of Lard Shiva in between the ‘alankar’ ceremonies. People enjoyed the special ‘Prasadam’ prepared by Kamal Gupta and Neelkanth with their team members. The event was managed by Naveen Mishra and religious committee. President Harsh Kumar gave the vote of thanks to all the ‘anlankar’ sponsors, the chanting team and temple priests for making attractive ‘abhishekams’ and ‘alankars’ for Lord Shiva, and devotees for their commitment and enthusiasm in every event of the temple.

Where the hell Malaysian airliner has vanished? Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 with 239 people on board disappears after taking off from Kuala Lumpur; search is on IANS, KUALA LUMPUR
T
he mystery behind the missing Malaysia Airlines plane continued to dodge the multinational search operation for the fifth day on March 12 as Malaysia’s air force chief denied reports that radar had detected the plane over the Strait of Malacca. “I wish to state that I did not make any such statements,” Xinhua cited Gen. Rodzali Daud as saying in a statement. But he said the air force has not ruled out the possibility that the Beijing-bound aircraft had turned back before it vanished from the radar. The belief resulted in the search area being widened to the vicinity of the waters off the west

coast of Malaysia, he said. Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 with 239 people on board vanished without a trace about an hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur early Saturday. The Boeing 777-200ER was presumed to have crashed off the Vietnamese coast into the South China Sea. The plane took off from Kuala Lumpur at 12.41 a.m. on March 8
and was due to land in Beijing at 6.30 a.m. the same day. The 227 passengers on the flight included five Indians, 154 Chinese and 38 Malaysians. Contact with the plane was lost along with its radar signal at 1.40 a.m. Saturday when it was flying over the Ho Chi Minh air traffic control area in Vietnam. An international terrorism
probe triggered by two Iranians boarding the missing plane with stolen passports has not finished, with John Brennan, director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), saying on March 11 the possibility of a terror link could not be ruled out. Asked if the agency could rule out a terror link in the case, the CIA head said: “No, we’re not ruling it out. Not at all.” Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble said that it appeared increasingly certain the two Iranians, Seyed Mohammed Reza Delavar and Pouria Nourmohammadi, were probably not terrorists, but illegal migrants seeking a new life in Europe. Echoing Noble’s statement, Khalid Abu Bakar, Malaysia’s national police chief, also said authorities believed that Nourmohammadi is not likely to be a member of any terrorist group, and that he was trying to migrate to Germany. Even as over 10 countries are scouring the waters around Flight MH370’s last known location, more countries like India, Japan and France have joined the massive search and rescue.

Search for plane on at Andaman sea KUALA LUMPUR: Search and rescue teams have been moved to the Andaman Sea to the south of Thailand to continue the search for a Malaysia Airlines plane that went missing on March 8, an official said here on March 12. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim said the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) had widened the area of its operations in the hope of finding clues that may lead to the discovery of the missing plane. Earlier on March 12, Malaysia’s air force chief denied reports that radar had detected the plane over the Strait of Malacca.

he Art of Living (AoL) centre near Pakistan’s capital Islamabad has been vandalized by unidentified gunmen, the city-based humanitarian and educational non-government organization said on March 9. “Around 15 gunmen entered the centre at Bani Gala on the outskirts of Islamabad on March 8 and vandalized it after tying up the security guards to trees in the complex,” the NGO said in a statement here. “Two cars with around eight men came inside and tied two guards. They hit the guards on the head and legs. They burned four rooms com-

Ravi Shankar had visited Pakistan in 2012 and inaugurated the centre for his Art of Living movement. He had also offered to hold talks with the Taliban to bring in peace in the region, saying it would help foster understanding among people with divergent views. “I am ready to go and talk to the Taliban. I want to talk to them, understand them and give them my opinion. So we can definitely make a difference. We should try it again and again even if we have to try it 100 times,” Shankar had said.

Maldives Parliament protests removal MALE: The sentencing and deposing of Maldives Elections Commissioner Fuad Thaufeeq is unlawful and without any proper procedures, Parliament Speaker Abdullah Shahid and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim said in a joint statement, media reported. The statement was issued on March 10, after the speaker and deputy speaker wrote a letter to President Abdulla Yameen, Chief Justice Ahmed Faiz and Attorney General Mohamed Anil that the
Supreme Court’s verdict against the elections commissioner was issued unlawfully, Haveeru news online reported. According to the Parliament secretariat, the two had come to the conclusion after reviewing the court’s verdict from a legal perspective. The Supreme Court issued a suspended sixmonth prison sentence to Thaufeeg, and sacked him and his deputy. The prison sentence has been suspended for three years, according to Xinhua.
Sri Lanka defiant on human rights violations COLOMBO: Sri Lanka won’t be bothered by criticism on the human rights front, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said, as he dubbed the Sri Lankans critical of his regime as “tale carriers”. Recounting the challenges Sri Lanka faced during the three-decade war against the Tamil Tigers that ended in 2009, Rajapaksa said the numerous largescale infrastructure projects in the erstwhile war zone were aimed at “winning the hearts and
the minds of the people”, Xinhua reported. He was referring to the third U.S.-backed resolution before the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) calling for greater reconciliation in post-war Sri Lanka. Rajapaksa insisted that his development strategy was indeed aimed at bringing people of different communities together. The U.S.-led resolution accuses Sri Lanka of failing to implement adequate reconciliation measures and investigate allegations of war crimes.

Women have alternating boy-girl menstrual cycles. In one cycle she is ready to conceive a boy and in next a girl.
To get a boy, conceive in boy cycle. To get a girl, conceive in girl cycle. PreGender Preconception test
is the only natural way to balance your family. By testing two consecutive mid-cycle urine samples, we find the pattern in your case and keep on guiding you in which cycle to conceive to get the desired baby. If 100 couples use our service to conceive, say a boy, 92 of them are already getting a boy simply by conceiving in boy cycle suggested by us. No medicine, no books to read, no gender diet gimmicks, no douching, no travel. Days of just keep trying are over. We can also find the gender of the baby as early as day-1 onwards. We provide materials to ship urine samples from your country to USA. Worldwide patents pending.

Andhra to see voting four times in five weeks Voters in 22 districts will cast their votes for the Mandal Parishad and Zilla Parishad, closely followed by assembly and Lok Sabha elections in April and May
IANS, HYDERABAD
F
rom rural and urban local bodies to assembly and parliament, voters in Andhra Pradesh will vote four times to elect their representatives in a span of five weeks. The State Election Commission on March 10 announced that elections to panchayat raj institutions would be held on April 6. Barring Hyderabad, voters in 22 districts will cast their votes for the Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies
(MPTC) and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTC). The state commission last week issued notification for March 30 elections to municipalities and corporations. The simultaneous elections to 294member state assembly and 42 Lok Sabha seats are to be held on April 30 and May 7 as per the schedule announced by the Election Commission of India. In Telangana, which is set to be born as 29th state in India on June 2, polling will take place on April 30 while Seemandhra or residuary state
of Andhra Pradesh will go to polls on May 7. The state has more than 6.24 crore voters. About one crore voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in urban local body polls. Already grappling with the problems created by bifurcation of the state in both the regions, the parties are finding it tough to decide candidates for many elections at one time. Even as they were coming to terms with the schedule announced for urban local body elections, the state election commission on March 10 declared that elections to rural local bodies would be held on April 6. State election commissioner P. Ramakanth Reddy said counting of votes would be taken up on April 8 and the results would be announced the same day. The commission announced the schedule two days after the Supreme Court directed it to hold the polls without any delay. The apex court had warned the poll panel that if notification is not released in two days, it can be treated as contempt of court. Ramakanth Reddy said the polls could not be held on time as the previous government did not prepare the reservation quota for various sections. The results for the 146 municipalities and 10 municipal corporations are scheduled to be announced on April 2.
Fund-raising dinner with Kejriwal in B’lore IANS, BANGALORE
W
ell-wishers of the AAP will host a fund-raising dinner at `20,000 per head with party leader Arvind Kejriwal at a hotel here on March 15. Touted to be the young party’s novel initiative on the lines of dinners held by political parties in countries like the U.S., the highprofile event is reportedly a brainchild of former Infosys director and AAP member V. Balakrishnan, who is inviting about 200 high net worth individuals working in the IT sector, private equity investors and venture capitalists.
Clarifying that the proposed dinner is not a party event and not
connected with its campaign for the ensuing general elections, AAP’s state unit spokesman Rohit Ranjan told IANS that Kejriwal had agreed to attend and interact with the invited guests.
“We are not hosting the dinner. It is being organized by our party’s well-wishers, ostensibly to raise some funds for the ensuing elections. Kejriwal has agreed to attend. We are in the process of finalizing the program, where, how many and who all will be present at the closed-door event,” Ranjan said. Election to Karnataka’s 28 Lok Sabha constituencies is scheduled on April 17. In case all the 200 invitees, including celebrities, high-profile businessmen and noted personalities from across the city and state attend the dinner, the AAP is expected to raise about `4 million.
Infosys co-founder Nilekani joins Congress BANGALORE: Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani formally joined the Congress party here on March 9 as a primary member to contest from the Bangalore South parliamentary constituency in the Lok Sabha election. Congress state unit president G. Parameshwar admitted the 58-year-old Nilekani, who is also the chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), into the party in the presence of hundreds of cadres and leaders, amidst bursting of crackers and beating of drums at the party office in the city centre. Dressed in casuals and sporting the famous Mysore turban, a beaming Nilekani thanked Parameshwar for admitting him into the party and permitting him to contest in the Lok Sabha
election from his home constituency. Nilekani will face BJP’s candidate and five-time winner H.N. Ananth Kumar, who has been representing the constituency since 1996. “I deem it as a privilege and honour to serve the people through the Congress. I am also humbled by the party’s decision to field me from the Bangalore South constituency in the upcoming general elections,” Nilekani told the media. Nilekani’s wife Rohini or his family members were conspicuously absent on the occasion. Incidentally, Nilekani’s name figured on March 8 in the first list of candidates to contest the polls even before he became a party member. Nilekani’s entry into the party, however, was marked by chaos and unruly

scenes as scores of party workers and supporters of local leaders gatecrashed into the party office hall and mobbed him. Nilekani was registered as the 121789th member of the party.

Sonakshi scorches the ramp at LFW
The sizzling actress enthralled the audience in a Manish Malhotra outfit at the latest edition of Lakme Fashion Week IANS, MUMBAI
M
anish Malhotra opened the summerresort 2014 edition of the Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) with his A Summer Affair collection and he roped in actress Sonakshi Sinha to walk for him in a soft and feminine attire. The audience gave his collection a standing ovation as Sonakshi walked the ramp in a midnight blue ensemble here on March11. Malhotra said his line is “influenced by the romanticism that exists in today’s day and age.” “Summer 2014 for me is about the feelings and emotions this modern day romance evokes,” he said. The designer incorporated colors like pink, powder blue, beige and ivory along with navy and grey on different prints and embroideries. From zip saris and summer skirt lehengas with pockets, to dress-styled kurtas and easy slim pants, the collection is apt for fashion forward youngsters. The men’s collection introduced print on print and different textures in contemporary Indian jackets. Sherwanis were overruled by bandis, and kurtas got a makeover as shirt kurtas by the designer in his latest range. The front row was completely SHILPA RAINA, KARACHI

Reveal your caffeine persona with this App! NEW YORK: Before you fill another cup of coffee, switch on this App that would tell you exactly how much coffee can impact your sleep. It would also tell you how your caffeine levels change throughout the day as you gulp down espressos, energy drinks and even chocolate! Named ‘Up Coffee’, the App is developed by San Francisco-based firm Jawbone Labs. “It helps you understand more about your caffeine choices by correlating caffeine intake and projected sleep time,” said a Jawbone Labs press release. To make this App work, you need to wear a wristband called UP24 or UP band. The wristband plugs into your smart phone via
the Simple Sync connector to help you learn how you sleep, move and eat. Simply log a coffee, tea, energy drink or other caffeinated beverage in the ‘UP Coffee’ App to see a visual display of where you fall on a spectrum from ‘Wired’ to ‘Sleep Ready’ at any given time. Jawbone analysed the data of more than 1,600 UP wearers and more than 5,000 nights of sleep to verify the relationship between caffeine and sleep and how we feel the next day. “With billions of people around the world enjoying coffee, tea and other caffeinated drinks each day, the ‘UP Coffee app’ delivers daily insights with new information on caffeine that is relevant to you,” the firm added. —IANS
Now winemaker machine for your kitchen! NEW YORK: Three cheers for wine lovers out there. Here comes a new machine that can turn water, grape concentrate, yeast and a finishing powder into wine in your kitchen in flat three days. Developed by wine expert Ken Boyer and entrepreneur Phillip James, the device named Miracle Machine is also controlled by an App that helps you choose the right ingredients to make the wine of your choice. The App, linked to the Miracle Machine via Bluetooth, also tracks the wine-making progress. Designed as a table top appliance, the machine has a clean shape that would look good in any kitchen.
How does it work? The fermentation techniques involves “electrical sensors, transducers, heaters and pumps”. A digital refractometer measures the sugar content of the liquid during the fermentation process. Then, a custom-designed ceramic air-diffuser pumps filtered air under a regulated micro-oxygenated environment — aerating the wine and thus softening the tannins. An ultrasonic transducer resonates effectively to give wine its flavour. Each of these components is connected to an Arduino microcontroller that ensures the machine is working fine, said a report in the magazine Giz Mag. —IANS

Soon, smart phone to diagnose diseases
According to a new research, seemingly healthy cells may hide clues that lung cancer would later develop IANS, NEW YORK
S
eemingly healthy cells may, in fact, hide clues that lung cancer would later develop, an alarming study shows. The researchers examined gene expression in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). It showed the area adjacent to tumours is rich with cancer markers. In addition, researchers from University of Texas’ MD Anderson Cancer Centre discovered the previously unknown role of a cancer-promoting gene in the airways of smokers with lung cancer. “These cancer-associated changes that distinguish the airways of smokers with lung cancer and healthy smokers may help us diagnose lung can-
cer earlier and develop more effective strategies for treatment,” explained Humam Kadara, assistant professor at MD Anderson Cancer Centre. Field cancerisation (FC) is a phenomenon in which large areas of cells are affected by a cancer-causing event such as smoking. This is the first effort to comprehensively examine gene expression, known as the transcriptome, of the adjacent air-
way field cancerisation in NSCLC. Previous research has shown normalappearing tissue close to lung pre-malignant and cancer lesions may have tumor-associated molecular abnormalities. It is known that cigarette smoke induces widespread cellular changes and pre-malignant lesions in the lungs of smokers, said the study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Eating red, processed meat increases gut cancer risk IANS, LONDON
T
hose red meat balls and readyto-eat nuggets that you pick up from the supermarket may actually put you at an increased gut cancer risk, scientists warned. In humans, they found the link between red and processed meat intake and cancer to be relatively small in magnitude but consistent. “Therefore, it may still present a
serious public health impact,” said a team of researchers from Norwegian University of Life Sciences and Norwe-
gian Academy of Science and Letters in Oslo.Though, there is a silver lining. Other foods, in cooperation with the bacteria that live in the gut, may protect the gut. So any potential adverse effects of meat may become less pronounced or may even be fully prevented, the study said. The team said that science does not yet have a full understanding of how food that we eat affects our gut and health.
WASHINGTON: Not just helping us with road directions, finding favorite food joint, photo sharing and chat sessions, smart phones would soon diagnose diseases for us in real time. Researchers from University of Houston are developing a disease diagnostic system that offers results that could be read using only a smart phone and a `1,200 lens attachment. This new device relies on specific chemical interactions that form between something that causes a disease — a virus or bacteria, for example - and a molecule that bonds with that one thing only, like a disease-fighting antibody. A bond that forms between a strep bacteria and an antibody that interacts only with strep, for instance, can support an ironclad diagnosis. “The trick is finding a way to detect these chemical interactions quickly, cheaply and easily. The device involves a simple glass slide and a thin film of gold with thousands of holes poked in it,” explained Jiming Bao, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at University of Houston. The device starts with a standard slide covered in a light-sensitive material known as a photoresist. It uses a laser to create a series of interference fringes — basically lines — on the slide, and then rotates it 90 degrees and creates another series of interference fringes. The intersections of these two sets of lines creates a fishnet pattern of UV exposure on photo-resist. The photo-resist is then developed and washed away. While most of the slide is then cleared, the spots surrounded by intersecting laser lines — the 'holes' in the fishnet - remain covered, basically forming pillars of photo-resist. The end result is a glass slide covered by a film of gold with ordered rows and columns of transparent holes where light can pass through. These holes are key to the system. The device diagnoses an illness by blocking the light with a disease-antibody bond - plus a few additional ingredients.
Your week ahead... Aries You must be longing for life to be normal again, but try not to jump the gun and make a big judgement call at the Full Moon near March 16. You still don’t have all the correct facts
Taurus You have already seen a surprising turnaround with your old friend or group project in the last week or two, and it has been to your benefit. The last thing you expected him, her or them to deliver has manifested.
Gemini No matter how tempted you are to rush to conclusions after Sunday’s Full Moon, it may not be until the weekend of March 22nd that you are actually able to pass informed judgement.
Cancer Don’t be fooled by the Full Moon on Sunday which is so uncomfortable it seems to demand a band-aid solution or even a full remedy. You don’t have all the information yet.
Leo There may have been issues about an old affair; again, whatever was on the internet is not exactly a finished verdict. There are possibilities but whatever you assumed in February is here to be rewritten over the next 7 or 8 days.
Virgo This week is too premature in terms of a big choice. You need to let things backtrack or alter in front of your very eyes, all the way to next March 17 when at last you can say you know something with certainty.
(March13-19) Libra Don’t be fooled by Full Moon which appears to lay things on the line – that is not the time to make any proper decision, purely because the Mercury is still shadow retrograde.
Scorpio You will finally be in full possession of the facts from Monday 17th March. This week is likely to show you things you were not aware of earlier; lucky you suspended judgement and read your horoscope, right?
Sagittarius Sagittarius please fill in the gap with your own comment on life since January. You have been longing to ditch someone or something, or perhaps reframe the situation.
Capricorn By the 22nd, though, you should be fully armed with what you need to make a choice. By April it looks like a revolution. You don’t want reality to interfere with the rest of your life any longer.
Aquarius Don’t be fooled by a very recent substitute for reality. Get back to where you were before this happened and try to size it all up again, with the final set of facts and figures you’ll have in your hand from the 21st.
Pisces With any luck, the new arrangement about your name, face, profile, brand or image will allow you to go off and do other things. You have no doubt had enough of the time-sapping —Jessica Adams muddle of the last few weeks.
