Trump’s order defunding ‘sanctuary cities’ blocked Judge William H. Orrick said lawsuits by Santa Clara county and San Francisco challenging the order were likely to succeed IANS, WASHINGTON
A
judge in San Francisco dealt the US administration another legal blow by blocking President Donald Trumps threatened suspension of unspecified federal funding from cities and towns that refuse to cooperate with immigration authorities. US District Judge William H. Orrick has blocked Trump’s January 25 executive order on what are called “sanctuary cities” and said lawsuits by Santa Clara county and San Francisco challenging the order were likely to succeed, the Washington Post reported. The White House blasted the decision in a scathing statement that said officials behind sanctuary city policies had “the blood of dead Americans on their hands”. Judge Orrick pointed to discrepancies in the administration’s interpretation of the executive order, which broadly authorized the Attorney General to withhold federal funding for “sanctuary cities” that do not cooperate with immigration officials. At the same time, the judge said the Justice Department may hold back funding that is awarded with immigration-related conditions, if those conditions are violated. The White House described Judge Orrick’s decision as a gift to the criminal gangs and cartels active in the US, adding that it empowered those involved in

human and sex trafficking and put thousands of innocent lives at risk. The ruling, which applies nationwide, was another judicial setback for the Trump administration, which has now seen three immigration orders stopped by
federal courts in its first 100 days, the daily reported. The judge’s ruling is effective on the national level and affects all sanctuary cities, comprising about 200 local entities, including Los Angeles, Chicago and New York,
that protect undocumented migrants from deportation. Orrick, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama, ruled that Trump’s order violated the Constitution by trying to punish local governments by seeking to “deprive local jurisdictions of congressional allocated funds without any notice or opportunity to be heard”. However, the ruling was not definitive and the Department of Justice could resort to the 9th District Appeals Court to try and get it overturned, the Washington Post reported. The White House said it would pursue all legal options, but lamented that the incident was “yet one more example of egregious overreach by a single, unelected district judge”. The American Civil Liberties Union and other advocacy groups said the injunction offered a clear warning that Trump’s order is illegal.
US President decides to keep Nafta for now WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump has told the leaders of Mexico and Canada that he would not immediately move to terminate the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta), the White House said. This came this week just hours after administration officials said Trump was likely to sign an order

pulling the US out of the deal, the New York Times reported. The White House described the evening phone calls with President Enrique Pena Nieto of Mexico and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada as “pleasant and productive”. Trump told both that he would quickly start the process of renegoti-
ating Nafta — not abandon it, as he promised during the 2016 presidential campaign, “It is my privilege to bring Nafta up-to-date through renegotiation,” Trump said in a statement issued by the White House at 10.33 p.m. “I believe that the end result will make all three countries stronger and better.”
Mexico border wall budget removed
WASHINGTON: Republican lawmakers removed the funds allocated for the Mexico border wall from their budget, given that the Democrats were unwilling to agree to back the budget with it and after President Donald Trump softened his stance on the matter. The President seems to be open to withdrawing the $1.4 billion he had demanded for the barrier be included in the federal budget, which must be approved before Friday if a partial government shutdown is to be avoided, Efe news reported. After Trump went public with his budget proposal last month, in which he included his request for funding to start construction of the wall, Democrats warned Trump that they would block any budget bill that included it. The Democrats’ unwillingness to compromise on the issue seems to have been effective in terms of obtaining their initial objective. The conservative leadership in the Upper House this week presented a new proposal with the wall construction funds out of the equation, although it includes funding for strengthening security along the US-Mexico frontier, Senate officials said. On April 24 evening, Trump softened his stance on his demand for immediate funding for wall construction, saying during a meeting with a group of conservative media outlets that he could wait until autumn for the funds and include them in the budget for FY 2018, which will be negotiated at that time. —IANS
‘Islamophobic incidents up by 1,000% since Trump took office’ IANS, WASHINGTON
T
he number of Islamophobia incidents involving US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials has increased by around 1,000 per cent since President Donald Trump took office in January, according to a Muslim activist group. The Council on AmericanIslamic Relations (CAIR) said preliminary data collated from its branches across the country, found that instances in which officials were accused of profiling Muslims accounted for 23 per cent of its caseload in the first three months of 2017. Of the 193 CBP cases from January-March 2017, 181 were

reported after the January 27 Muslim travel ban by the Trump administration. In the first three
months of 2016, the group reported 17 cases, The Independent reported this week.
“These are incidents which are reported to us and which we examine,” Corey Saylor, director of CAIR’s group that monitors Islamophobia, told the daily. “We look at these very carefully. Around 50 per cent, we reject.” Saylor said allegations of Islamophobia being levelled at border officials was nothing new. Yet, he said that Trump’s election and the signing of two executive orders to crackdown on undocumented migrants and to refuse entry to citizens from six Muslimmajority countries, was behind the spike in incidents. “I have no doubt in my mind that these things are connected.” In the aftermath of the travel ban, which have been halted by the
courts, there were widespread reports of chaos at US airports, and people were turned away as they sought to board flights to the US at foreign airports. Saylor said he appreciated the difficult job being faced by border officials, but asked that they did it without breaching the US Constitution. He cited testimony of a Customs and Border Protection official from a 2013 lawsuit, who said: “Look to the Muslim woman as an indicating factor.” “By the way she wears her hijab. If the hijab is a solid color it indicates religiosity. If it’s a patterned scarf, with colors, it’s more likely that she is less religious,” the official added.

Sukma attack ‘cold blooded murder’ In one of the deadliest attacks, 300 to 400 heavily armed Maoists ambushed a CRPF contingent in Chhattisgarh on Monday, killing 25 troopers and escaping with their rifles IANS, RAIPUR
Kashmir attack: Three soldiers killed
A
day after 25 CRPF troopers were massacred by Maoists in Chhattisgarh, Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said that the strategy to root out left-wing extremism will be reviewed and a meeting of affected states has been convened on May 8 for the purpose. The Home Minister, who visited the state to pay tributes to the 25 Central Reserve Police Force troopers killed at their camp, termed the massacre as a “cold blooded murder” and said that their sacrifice won’t go in vain. “The attack in Sukma is a cold blooded murder... It is an act of cowardice. The attack was out of desperation,” he told reporters after paying homage to those killed. “We are working to root out the problem of LWE (left-wing extremism). The LWE groups are antidevelopment. They do not want development in the area. The Centre and state governments will work together,” he added. Rajnath Singh said he had convened a meeting of states affected by Maoism on May 8. “We will review the strategy and if necessary we will revisit it.”
Grief struck family members of Saurabh Kumar who attained martyrdom in a maoist attack in Sukma of Chhatisgarh on April 24. (Photo: IANS)
He also accused the Maoists of using tribals as cannon fodder. On Monday, around 300 Maoists, including women, ambushed a CRPF contingent in a forested patch in Chhattisgarh, killing the troopers and escaping with their AK-47 assault rifles. Rajnath Singh, who reached Raipur with Minister of State for Home Hansraj Ahir and CRPF’s Additional Director General Sudeep Lakhtakia, said the government would not let the sacrifices of the troopers go in vain.
Rs 2,500 an hour air travel scheme SHIMLA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday flagged off the first low-cost Shimla-Delhi flight near here, and said his dream is to see a person wearing slippers fly in an aeroplane in the country. “My dream was to see a person wearing a ‘hawai chappal’ fly on the ‘hawai jahaz’ (plane),” he said in his almost 20-minute-long address in Hindi. During his day-long visit to the Queen of Hills, which witnessed a light shower in the morning, Modi underscored the need to keep air fares within the reach of the middle class. The Rs 2,500-an-hour flight launched on Thursday is part of ‘Ude
Desh ka Aam Nagrik’ (UDAN) scheme that makes air travel more affordable to the common people. It also plans to enhance connectivity with more airports in the country. The first regional flight under the scheme was flagged off between Shimla and Delhi from Jubbarhatti, the tabletop airport located 2,196 meters above the sea level and 22 km from Himachal Pradesh capital Shimla. Air India subsidiary, Alliance Air, which will operate the DelhiShimla flight, has fixed the one-way fare at Rs 2,036. He said the UDAN scheme caters to the aspirations of the Indians, making flights cheaper than taxi fare.
Lokpal law workable legislation: SC NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court said on Thursday that the Lokpal law as it stands today is “workable” and there is no “justification” to hold it back till the proposed amendments are effected. A bench of Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Navin Sinha also dismissed another plea seeking privacy of the Chief Justice of India in the selection of the Lokpal. The top court’s verdict on Thursday put the ball in the government’s court
which was holding back the enforcement of the law on grounds that there were several amendments to be made in its existing form. One of the hurdles being that the existing Lokpal says that the selection panel should have Leader of Opposition as one of its members. There is no recognized Leader of Opposition in the present Lok Sabha. Though the Congress is the single largest opposition party, its leader does not have the status of Leader of Opposition.
“We have accepted it as a challenge. It will be answered appropriately.” “We have lost precious lives of our soldiers... Left-wing extremists are trying to impede the progress (of the region)... They are the biggest enemy of the poor,” he added. Responding to a query over alleged intelligence failure in the incident, Rajnath Singh said, “This is not the time for a blame game.” Rajnath Singh also visited a hospital and enquired about the
SRINAGAR: Guerrillas believed to be foreigners sneaked into an army camp in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday and killed three soldiers in an audacious pre-dawn attack that left two militants dead, officials said. Seven other soldiers were injured in the fighting that erupted after the insurgents at 4.30 a.m. cut through the two-layered barbed wire of the firing range at the Panzgam army camp in Kupwara district, some 120 km north of Srinagar. Taking advantage of the surprise element, the attackers hurled grenades and fired indiscriminately, causing the casualties. Two of the soldiers in hospital were said to be in critical condition. The army retaliated, killing two militants. A third reportedly escaped, triggering a massive search operation. In no time, crowds gathered outside the army camp shouting slogans and resorted to heavy stone throwing, the officials said. The army opened fire killing a 70-year-old civilian. —IANS
health of the CRPF personnel injured in the Maoist ambush. He said that all the injured soldiers are now out of danger. In Raipur, Chattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh, who also addressed the media with Rajnath Singh, said that fight against Maoists would continue with “more vigor”. “The fight against Maoists in Sukma is the biggest operation against LWE in the country. We have decided to enhance our activities and construction work in the region,” he said. But, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh stirred a controversy by reiterating that Raman Singh and the BJP had a “deal and understanding” with the Maoists in the state. He called for talks with all stakeholders to bring Maoist violence under control. “Chief Minister Raman Singh ji and the Bharatiya Janata Party win elections from there because they had a deal and understanding with the Maoists. I have said this before, and I am stating it again,” he told reporters. Digvijaya Singh said unless the state’s tribal villagers are taken into confidence, Maoist violence cannot be brought under control.
BJP’s hat-trick win in Delhi civic poll routs AAP, Congress MOHD ASIM KHAN, NEW DELHI
R
iding on a Modi wave and defeating anti-incumbency, the BJP on Wednesday retained with a sweeping majority its 10-year hold on the capital’s three civic bodies, routing the city’s ruling AAP which blamed rigged EVMs for its poor show in the municipal polls. The BJP won 181 of the 270 wards that polled on Sunday, way above the halfway mark to secure control of all the three Municipal Corporations of Delhi — North, South and East. The BJP won 64 of 103 wards in North, 70 of 104 in South and 47 of 63 in East. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal could manage wins in just 48 wards and the Congress was way behind with 30 seats. The Bahujan Samaj Party won three wards, Indian National Lok Dal and Samajwadi Party one each and independents won six wards. A jubilant BJP credited its continued electoral success to Prime

Minister Narendra Modi, who tweeted his thanks to the people of Delhi for retaining their faith in the party. “I laud the hardwork of (Delhi BJP) team which made the resounding MCD win possible.” BJP President Amit Shah, who is in West Bengal, said the election results, coming close on the heels of the party’s successes in the assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur,
have taken forward the “Modi and BJP juggernaut”. Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari, the brain behind the party’s “AAP se na ho ga” (AAP can’t do it) campaign, also credited the victory to Modi and his developmental policies. Tiwari called for Kejriwal’s resignation, saying “the people of Delhi have exercised their right to recall” by voting against the AAP.

Babri dispute: A blot on BJP? The BJP may continue winning elections if the demolition issue is not of much consequence to the voters today AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
A
s the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was hoping for success across the board from panchayats to parliament, the revival of the case against some of its leaders in the Babri Masjid demolition case of 1992 has raised the possibility of revealing the party’s communal face which it has recently been trying to hide. The BJP may continue to win elections if only because the issues relating to the demolition are not of much consequence to today’s voters. Even then, the possible indictment of some of the leaders, including former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani and Union Minister for Water Resources Uma Bharti, cannot but dent the party’s image and be an international embarrassment. The reason is the seriousness of the charges against them such as the promotion of enmity between communities. These accusations not only show Advani and others in a poor light, including the Rajasthan Governor, Kalyan
Singh, who was the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister at the time of the demolition, but also draw attention to the fact that the BJP’s rise was based on an act of criminality. The ascent of no other party in modern history has taken place against such an inglorious background — except that of the Nazis in Germany. That the BJP has largely been able to overcome the shame of 1992 and also of 2002 when the
about, will have no immediate impact on the ruling dispensation. At the same time, it will be possible to trace any incident involving the minorities — such as the killing of the suspected beef-eater Mohammed Akhlaq and of Pehlu Khan, who was transporting cattle — to the propagation of poisonous sentiments which led to the destruction of a protected monument, which Advani described as an “ocular provocation” for the Hindus.
The demolition of the “disputed structure”, as the saffronties like to call the Babri Masjid, and the Gujarat riots are the two landmark events in the BJP’s history. Gujarat riots took place is evident from its electoral successes. A major reason for these victories is the weakness of its opponents. The BJP is also fortunate that except for a few minor figures, many of those facing the trial have nothing to do with the government. Being virtually in retirement from public life, their arraignment, if it comes
Although the saffron brotherhood has always been known for its antiMuslim and anti-Christian outlook, its diatribes of hate had rarely been as venomous as when the Babri masjid was destroyed in an act of vandalism which shook the “secular fabric” of the Constitution, according to the Supreme Court. The demolition of the “disputed

structure”, as the saffronties like to call the Babri Masjid, and the Gujarat riots are the two landmark events in the BJP’s history. The charges of criminal conspiracy against Advani in the first case means that present-day margdarshak or mentor will have to relive in the dock the “saddest day” of his life which was on December 6, 1992, when the mosque was brought down.
In the Gujarat riots case, however, the clean chit given to Narendra Modi by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Supreme Court has absolved the then Chief Minister of the state of any dubious role in the outbreak. What these indictments and absolutions show is not only BJP’s rocky road to present pre-eminence, but also the assaults on the “secular fabric” that marked its journey.
Mallya’s custody: India’s extradition rate 36% As the Indian Government sought liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s custody from Britain, India’s extradition rate has been no more than 36 per cent between 2002 and 2016, as 110 fugitives are yet to be extradited RAKESH DUBBUDU, NEW DELHI
T
he government has sought custody of liquor baron Vijay Mallya from the UK, but India’s success rate at extradition has been no more than 36 per cent over 15 years, according to a report by Factly.in, a data journalism portal. This means India managed one extradition of every three sought. While 62 fugitives have been extradited to India from a foreign country between 2002 and 2016, 110 fugitives are yet to be extradited though a formal request that has been made by India, according to an answer to the Lok Sabha on December 6, 2016, Factly reported. Mallya was arrested by the Scotland Yard — and released on bail — on April 18, 2017, in connection with an extradition request filed by India on February 8, 2017. The UK government has sent the

request to the concerned court, and the arrest marks the beginning of the extradition process. Mallya is wanted in several cases related to economic offenses in
India. The now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines that he set up owes over Rs 9,000 crore ($1.5 billion) to stateowned and private banks, it has been widely reported.
There were 16 extradition requests pending with UK as of July 2016, according to an answer to the Lok Sabha. Only one fugitive has been extradited from the UK — Samirbhai Vinubhai Patel, an Indian citizen, for murder; the extradition came in October 2016, 23 years after India’s extradition treaty with the UK came into force in 1993. The highest extraditions happened from the UAE (18), followed by the US (9). While four each were extradited from Canada and Thailand, three have been extradited from Germany and South Africa. India has extradition treaties with 47 countries, among them Afghanistan, Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bhutan, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Egypt, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mauri-
tius, Mexico, Nepal, the Netherlands, Oman, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, the Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. A request for extradition can be initiated against a fugitive criminal who is formally accused of, charged with or convicted of an extradition offense. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) takes up extradition requests with the concerned foreign countries when a request for extradition is received from the relevant law enforcement agencies in India. All extradition requests should be supported by documents and information as prescribed by the MEA guidelines. It has to be noted that each extradition request is different and the request is dependent on the specific treaty/agreement signed with a country.

Haley discusses India-US ties The US Ambassador to the UN and India’s UN Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin shared perspectives on how India-US can work together at the United Nations ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS
T
he US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, the first Indian American to hold a cabinet rank, visited India’s UN Mission for a wide-ranging discussion with Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin. “We shared perspectives on how India-US can work together at the UN in line with our growing ties,” Akbaruddin told IANS after the meeting. Haley described their meeting in a tweet as “great”. “We discussed India’s economy, peacekeeping reform and the partnership between India and the US.” A US Mission statement added
that they also discussed “India’s economic and anti-corruption reforms that have helped businesses and spurred growth” and “the close ties between the two countries and opportunities to further the partnership between the US and India at the UN.” Permanent Representative to the UN has a cabinet rank in the US government and Haley has emerged as a powerful and outspoken voice on foreign policy in the US, even as she deviated from some of the early positions of President Donald Trump. However, the differences have virtually disappeared as Trump moved closer to her stances due to realpolitik and Congressional pressures. For exam-
ple, Trump has embraced her hardline on Russia after chemical attacks allegedly carried out by Syria. A critic of how the UN works, Haley has been insistent on reforming it, especially the peacekeeping operations as a cut in US contributions to the world body looms. “I know for a fact that Nikki feels very, very strongly about taking on problems that really people steered away from,” Trump said during a White House lunch for Permanent Representatives of members of the Security Council. Trump thanked Haley for her “outstanding leadership” and said she was doing a “fantastic job.” It was not known if the Security

Citizenship revocation case in US top court ASHOK EASWARAN, CHICAGO
T
he United States Supreme Court is to begin hearing oral arguments on April 26 in a case which could set a precedent in the revocation of American citizenship of naturalized citizens and is of paramount significance to thousands of Indian residents. In Maslenjak v. United States, the Supreme Court will determine if an “immaterial false statement or
omission in an immigration document or status proceeding” can lead to criminal prosecution and revocation of citizenship. With more rigorous immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump, the case has caused consternation among many immigrant activists. As many as 70 organizations representing immigrants have filed an amicus brief about the case. The Asian Americans Advancing
only said that she was open to the idea. Asked about it at a meeting of the Council on Foreign Relations here in March, she admitted candidly, “First of all, I’m in learning mode. And as I look at that, I know there is conversations of reform of Security Council.”

Justice (AAAJ), which is among the organizations which filed the amicus brief, said in a statement, “The brief explained that many individuals may make minor errors in filling out immigration forms or
providing information because of language barriers and lack of counsel and subjecting those individuals to criminal prosecution and loss of citizenship exacts a harsh and unfair penalty.”
JEDDAH: The bodies of two Indian workers who died in Riyadh are lying in a Saudi mortuary for weeks as their former employer are not ready to bear the cost of transporting them to India. Jaswinder Singh (56), from Kapurthala district in Punjab, died on February 21. Ponnam Satyanarayana (48), from Jagtial district in Telangana, passed away on March 11. Since then, their mortal remains are in Riyadh, the Saudi Gazette reported. Both used to work for a now defunct construction company. —IANS

Murthy will continue to serve as a member of the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service. He was confirmed as Surgeon General in December of 2014. He said in a Facebook post: “Two years and four months ago, I was honored to be sworn in as the 19th Surgeon General of the United States. For the grandson of a poor farmer from India to be asked by the
President to look out for the health of an entire nation was a humbling and uniquely American story.” “I will always be grateful to our country for welcoming my immigrant family nearly 40 years ago and giving me this opportunity to serve.” The US Department of Health and Human Services already updated its official handles with the profile of Trent-Adams who has served the Public Health Services Corps for 24 years. It was not immediately clear why Murthy was relieved from duty. Murthy, 37, was born in England to parents from India and grew up in Miami, Florida.

day after a court here remanded AIADMK leader T.T.V. Dinakaran to five-day’s police custody, a Crime Branch team on Thursday flew him and his aide Mallikarjuna to Chennai for further investigations into the alleged attempt to bribe officials of the Election Commission to release the party’s “two leaves” symbol. “The Crime Branch team left for Chennai along with Dinakaran and Mallikarjuna today (Thursday) morning,” a senior police officer told IANS pleading anonymity. Police would search Dinakaran and Mallikarjuna’s residence to get more possible leads to establish their involvement in the bribery case. “The transaction had taken place through some Chennai operators and there are possibilities that the team can obtain some data through their laptops and computers,” the officer said.

Dinakaran was arrested this week by the Delhi Police Crime Branch for trying to pay out Rs 50 crore in bribes to the poll officials through Sukesh Chandrasekhar to ensure the “two leaves” poll symbol was allotted to the AIADMK faction led by Sasikala. “The police want to establish the
route through which Dinakaran and Mallikarjuna have come in contact with Sukesh Chandrashekhar, a coaccused in the case,” the officer said. Chandrasekhar was arrested from a south Delhi hotel on April 16 night, allegedly with Rs 1.3 crore meant for bribing poll panel officials.
CHENNAI: The midnight arrest of AIADMK Deputy General Secretary T.T.V. Dinakaran by the Delhi Police will not affect the proposed unification talks between the two factions in the party, said a former AIADMK parliamentarian. “The law has done its duty. T.T.V. Dinakaran attacked democracy by trying to bribe the Election Commission officials. He was sent out of the party by our leader former Chief Minister and party General Secretary J. Jayalalithaa,” .C.Palaniswamy, former parliamentarian told IANS. On April 25 night, the Delhi Police arrested Dinakaran over the charge of trying to bribe the poll officials through middleman Sukesh

Tamil Nadu CM urges Centre not to privatize Salem Steel Plant CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Palaniswami said the state government has supported the expansion project costing Rs 2,005 crore of the Salem Steel Plant with a structured package of incentives in the form of soft loan,
capital subsidy, electricity tax exemption and environmental protection subsidy. “In 2015, the government of Tamil Nadu granted an extension of one year from November 1, 2010, to October 31, 2011, to enable Salem Steel Plant to complete its expansion activities and avail the incentive package,” he added. the opposite, which has reached a high over the eviction proceedings in Munnar, that was begun by the Revenue Department headed by a CPI minister. It’s most unfortunate that Mani has used his power to abuse women and that too the hapless plantation workers in Munnar,” Sateeshan said. “The police and the CPI-M in Munnar are threatening the women plantation workers belonging to the ‘Pembulai Orumai’ (women’s collective) to call off their protests. Khanna was hospitalized over a month ago for cancer but the family then remained tight-lipped about his condition. Khanna is survived by his former wife Geetanjali and their sons Akshaye and Rahul, who are now actors, and his present wife Kavita and son Sakshi and daughter Shraddha. Vinod Khanna was admitted to Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital in the first week of April. In a brief statement, the hospital said Khanna breathed his last at 11.20 a.m. due to advanced bladder carcinoma. Khanna’s funeral will be held at a crematorium in Worli here this evening.
“Saddened to know about the demise of one of the greatest legends of Indian cinema,” Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said. “We have lost an eminent personality who played a variety of roles in his film career and later in his social-political life. His contribution, both in films and as a minister, will always be remembered,” Fadnavis added. The actor was Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member of the Lok Sabha from Gurdaspur in Punjab. He was into his fourth term as MP from the seat. Khanna debuted in Bollywood in 1968 with Man Ka Meet as a villain. After playing various supporting roles in movies like Purab Aur Paschim, Sachaa Jhutha and Mastana, he got his first big break as a lead in 1971 with Hum Tum Aur Woh. Bharatam Academy’s 20th anniversary
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL- Bharatam Academy of Dance Arts recently celebrated its 20th anniversary alongside its annual showcase on April 8. About a hundred dancers ascended the stage, some for their very first time and some for their last, demonstrating their technique and style through Guru Vanitha Veeravalli’s expert choreography. With items ranging from basic adavus, or steps, to complex varnams and nritta pieces, the audience was able to truly witness the journey of a growing dancer throughout the program. The program began with the invocatory dance Nrittanjali, performed by seasoned Bharatam veteran and accomplished performer Sutikshna Veeravalli. This was followed by a younger set of dancers, performing a dance about Ganesha. Many of the dances were heritage dances performed in the Pandanallur style, in which Veeravalli was trained. Certain dances, such as Sendhil Managar, were even performed by Veeravalli at her own arangetram. The years of development that went into this choreography and its performance were certainly reflected in the nuance infused into the piece by
C
the dancers. Other pieces had a more modern take, focusing on nritta, or rhythm, and a fusion of different musical styles. Pravaaham, performed by Bharatham’s senior dancers, explored the joy of rhythm through a more energetic musical arrangement, with careful attention to the unique beat of the song. This piece was also partly choreographed by Sutikshna Veeravalli alongside Guru Vanitha, and their combined efforts resulted in a truly unique and innovative piece that engaged both the dancers and the audience. Bharatam could not have had a more successful demonstration of the twenty years of dedication, sacrifice, and passion that went into developing its school of dancers. Veeravalli has helped to foster a noteworthy joy of dance in every one of her performers. Many of her dancers had the opportunity to speak throughout the program about their appreciation for the Veeravalli family and the amazing experiences they have had through Bharatam. Bharatam’s encouraging spirit, artful choreography, and innovative passion are sure to drive it further and further for many years to come!

Post her award celebrations; the calendar looks choc-a bloc for the singer. She will be touring the United States in June for two shows and then will be back again in September for an extensive six city tour of the US before she returns to Mumbai just in time for Navratri. Falguni’s fans can rejoice because the dandiya queen will commence another sixcity tour in October and travel across US and Canada. She says, “We usually do a tour around Navratras but this year God willing we will be doing more than that.” By Zofeen Maqsood
I
ndia’s reigning dandiya queen Falguni Pathak, who was bestowed with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in Mumbai last week talks about music, her global fan-base and the recognitions that humble her… When she sings she feels the whole universe is strumming a tune with her; when she dances she feels the pulse of passion vibrating in every pore of her being. Perhaps, it is this infectious energy that captivates her audiences and makes her music memorable. Falguni Pathak, the talented singer and performer can be credited not only with popularizing the traditional music from Gujarat all across India but also with bringing it to the global audiences. Pathak’s impressive contribution in the field of music recently received an apt recognition, when she was awarded with one of the most highly respected awards in Indian cinema – the Dadasaheb
Phalke Excellence Award for 2017. That Falguni won an award in a special category – dandiya queen, especially conferred for her, made the celebrations even more imposing for her. Considered as one of highest honors in Indian entertainment industry, the awards are given out every year, to people who contribute extraordinarily towards the growth and recognition of Indian cinema. Awarded by the Directorate of Film Festivals, an organization set up by the Ministry of Broadcast and information Technology, the awards, which were first, initiated in the year 1969 by the Government of India in recognition of legendary filmmaker Dadasaheb Phalke have continued to set a benchmark in acknowledging the most deserving from Indian cinema. The earlier recipients have been biggies such as Raj Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar and Yash Chopra amongst others. This year the ceremony had esteemed winners including Hema Malini, Aishwarya Rai and Javed Akhtar.
THE BIG MOMENT For Pathak, it was a hugely humbling moment to be sharing the same podium where such industry stalwarts were being honored. Recalling the moment when she got to know about the award, she describes it as the most pleasant shock ever. She says, “About a month before the ceremony when my office received a mail, we were stumped with joy but at the same time very humbled. When my friend, who read the mail to me said, that I have already being chosen for the award and it is not a nomination mail, I knew that all my hard work over the years have been recognized but was extremely surprized .” The fact that Falguni has been relentlessly promoting traditional folk music and bringing it to the younger generation is quite a commendable job in itself, did she then anticipate such an award coming her way? The singer in a very nonchalant way admits, that she does her job with a lot of passion and does not think about what may follow. She says, “I have always worked with lot of love and have not aimed for anything to come my way. I would attribute my success to my God who makes way for
me.” She adds, “The fact that I received the award in a special category created for me makes it even more noteworthy for me.” Talking about award functions, not just in Hollywood but also in Bollywood now, a lot of effort goes into the preparation for the recipients too. So, did she also carefully plan her outfit or her speech for the ceremony? Falguni says, “I did nothing and I didn’t even prepare a speech. On the stage I just spoke what came to my heart at that moment. For me, the fact that I was chosen was enough and I wanted to show my gratitude in the most honest way that I felt. I did not rehearse anything, I was just happy and humble and I hope it showed.” Post her award celebrations; the calendar looks choc-a bloc for the singer. She will be touring the United States in June for two shows and then will be back again in September for an extensive six city tour of the US before she returns to Mumbai just in time for Navratri. Falguni’s fans can rejoice because the dandiya queen will commence another six-city tour in October and travel across US and Canada. She says, “We usually do a tour around Navratras but this year God willing we will be doing more than that.” The lady who receives as much love from Indian diaspora abroad says, “I have performed almost all over the globe and everywhere I have received the same warm reception. It has never felt that I am outside of my country or not with my people. With the only exception of Japan and China, where Falguni is yet to tour her fan base extends from Australia to America. She says, “Given a chance I would also want to perform at China and Japan and show them the magic of Indian music.”
MORE WORK, LESS TALK Back in 1998, when Falguni came up with her first commercial album, Yaad Piya ki Aane Lagi, it was an instant success. Falguni who was already popular as a dandiya performer in Gujarat suddenly became
the nation’s new favorite songstress. She repeated her success with another mega-hit album in 1999, called, Maine Paayal Hai Chhankayi, and she was in the spotlight as this new folk meets pop performer who intrigued a whole generation of youngsters to look beyond western music at our own wealth of music. Did she realize it that she was in a way starting a whole new movement. Falguni says, “When I was approached to do an album I was very enthusiastic. I was confident that our music had the mood to impress everyone however we were not prepared for such a big success. I remember when my first song became an overnight hit we would watch television and dance alongside.” But audiences have also missed her, as she has not come up with an album for sometime now. She says, “I would love to do the kind of albums I did but slowly the music scene changed and today I feel that we do not have the same innocence the songs of those time had.” Falguni also is a bit of a media recluse. Despite busy touring various continents almost around the year she makes little or no noise about her work. She smiles and says, “I have always been more of a performer and less of a communicator. It doesn’t come naturally to me to talk about myself. I am happy to know that my fans want to know more of me though.”
MUSIC IN MY BLOOD Growing up, Falguni admits that music lovers surrounded her. She says, “Although I never learnt classical singing, my initial introduction to music was through my family. Both my parents and my sister loved singing. I remember growing up in our house the radio was always on and we were always listening to music. We listened to a lot of Hindi film songs as well as regional songs. My musical instincts are a result of that true and raw love for song and dance. I never took it as a chore to accomplish but always as a passion to excel in.” The results, need we say are there for everyone to see!

Kanchan Patel BY A STAFF WRITER EDHAM, MS – A man who ran over a hotel worker and dragged her more than three miles to her death has been sentenced to a year behind bars. Moses Acloque (25) also was sentenced last month in Norfolk Superior Court to three years’ probation. The Norwood man was convicted on February 14 of charges, including motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal accident in the 2013 death of Indian American Kanchan Patel, 58. In addition to the jail sentence, the judge ordered Acloque to obtain a drug evaluation and whatever treatment if it is recommended. He must also refrain from using illicit drugs and submit to random testing, David Traub, a spokesman for the Norfolk County district attorney’s office, said. Acloque eventually pulled over behind a restaurant in Foxborough, where he was arrested. While behind the restaurant, Acloque put the truck in reverse until the victim’s body was dislodged. He then attempted to flee the scene, but he was arrested by the state police who were in the area and were notified by a driver who had been following Acloque. Acloque had claimed he did not know the victim was stuck under his wheel.

COMMUNITY NEWS/east coast man found Swaminarayan birth anniv celebrated Missing dead in quarry 4
FRIDAY, 28 APRIL, 2017
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandirs across North America celebrated the auspicious day of April 5, Chaitra Sud Nom. According to the Hindu calendar, this day marks the 236th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Swaminarayan as well as that of Bhagwan Ram. This year’s program encompassed the theme: Bhaktavatsal Hari Birud Tiharo, meaning, Bhagwan’s resolve to care for his devotees. Children and youth of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha organized the joyous occasion. Weeks of the volunteers’ time were spent practising dances, skits, speeches and song performances to execute a professional stage production. The program highlighted many examples of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and Bhagwan Ram’s compassion for their devotees and how, in turn, it inspired devotees to develop firm faith in God and cultivate a dharma-based lifestyle. The audience was educated on how they, too, could nurture a modern dharmabased lifestyle by adhering to a vegetarian diet, maintaining sobriety and abstaining from other types of addictions. The program not only encouraged those who attended to imbibe the positive values presented within their own lives, but also provided yet another way for the local

Routine bedtime may protect pre-schoolers from obesity Regular bedtimes, mealtimes and limited screen time can help lower chances of obesity in pre-schoolers, a study suggests IANS, NEW YORK
F
ollowing routines from a very early age may have many benefits. A new research suggests that regular bedtimes, mealtimes and limited screen time may be linked to better emotional health in pre-schoolers, and that might lower their chances of obesity later. “This study provides more evidence that routines for preschoolaged children are associated with their healthy development and could reduce the likelihood that these children will be obese,” said
lead author Sarah Anderson of The Ohio State University in the US. Researchers evaluated three household routines when children were three years old — regular bedtime, regular mealtime and whether or not parents limited television and video watching to an hour or less on a daily basis. Then they compared those to parents’ reports of two aspects of children’s self-regulation at that same age. Lastly, they investigated how the routines and self-regulation worked together to impact obesity at age 11, based on international criteria.
Meat-based diet may harm your liver IANS, LONDON
A
diet high in animal protein is associated with a higher risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a condition in which fat builds up in the liver, in overweight people, says a study. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a major health concern as it can lead to permanent scarring (cirrhosis) and subsequently to cancer and malfunction of the liver. This may result in life-threatening complications for which a liver transplant is needed. “A healthy lifestyle is the cornerstone of treatment in patients with NAFLD, but specific dietary recommendations are lacking,” said lead

author of the study, Louise Alferink from the Erasmus Medical Centre, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
“The results from this study demonstrate that animal protein is associated with NAFLD in over-
weight elderly people,” Alferink said. These findings presented at The International Liver Congress 2017 in Amsterdam also showed that fructose consumption per se might not be as harmful as previously assumed. A total of 3,440 people were included in the study of whom 30 per cent were lean and 70 per cent were overweight (body mass index [BMI] of 25 kg/square meter or greater). The average age was 71 years and NAFLD, as assessed by abdominal ultrasound, was present in 35 per cent of the participants. Furthermore, analyses were stratified for BMI to account for BMIrelated differences in eating habits and dietary measurement errors.
The research included 10,955 children. All three household routines were associated with better emotional self-regulation — a measure based on parents’ responses to questions like how easily the child becomes frustrated or over-excited, showed the findings published in the International Journal of Obesity. Those children with greater emotional dysregulation were more likely to be obese later. “We saw that children who had the most difficulties with emotion regulation at age three also were more likely to be obese at age 11,” Anderson said.
High BP drug could treat skin cancer
NEW YORK: Researchers have discovered by accident cancer-fighting properties in a drug typically used to treat high blood pressure. The drug carvedilol can protect against the sun-induced cell damage causing skin cancer, the findings showed. “What began as an experimental error led to an interesting scientific discovery,” said co-leader of the research team, Ying Huang, Western University of Health Sciences, US.
Eating less salt may not Make kidney health a priority: Experts lower your BP: Study IANS, NEW YORK
NEW YORK: Contrary to popular belief, consuming less sodium may not lead to lower blood pressure in the long term, show results of a new study that followed more than 2,600 men and women for 16 years. “We saw no evidence that a diet lower in sodium had any long-term beneficial effects on blood pressure,” said Lynn Moore, Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine in the US. The new findings, presented at the Experimental Biology 2017 meeting,
being held in Chicago from April 2226, call into question the sodium limits recommended by the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend limiting sodium intake to 2,300 milligrams a day for people who are healthy. For the study, the researchers followed 2,632 men and women ages 30 to 64 years old who were part of the Framingham Offspring Study. The participants had normal blood pressure at the start of the study.

Celebrating The 125th Year Of WhyBirth choose camps over hotels?
What accessories Paramahamsa Yogananda to pack for vacation IANS, NEW DELHI
Aand West YOGA : Uniting East
NEW DELHI: When it comes to packing accessories for vacation, minimalism is the key with a pop of color, say experts. Sreenivas Reddy, Principal Designer at BlueStone.com, and Pallavi Foley, a jewellery designer, list down a few ideas for the type of jewellery for adventurous treks, spontaneous trips and romantic getaways: * Lightweight jewellery: Minimalist pendants and earrings are vacation essentials for any destination. Small teardrop earrings with semiprecious stones can
be paired with any outfit, from sundresses to jumpers. Keeping it simple and elegant on vacation is the key to a stress free and fun-filled holiday. * Cuffs over bracelets: Choose cuffs over bracelets this summer as they are easier to pack and less likely to tangle, fall off or snap. An elegant cuff in a contemporary design makes for a perfect fuss-free style statement. Team up a cuff with khaki shorts and a cool tee shirt and you are ready for anything, from walk on the beach to a safari. * Don’t go all chunky: Chunky jewellery is a burden to carry on vacation. One does not want to worry about managing that chunky necklace or huge earrings.
re you jotting down vacation ideas for the summer? Well, this time try staying at camps instead of a hotel as they are more affordable and promise a unique experience, say experts. Chirag Gupta, Co-founder and CEO, Deyor Camps, and Devanshu Khandelwal, Co-founder and CEO, Wheelify, list reasons why you can opt for camps over hotels. * Affordable: Any hotel below three stars can turn out to be an awful experience, and often payments exclude meals. Meanwhile, camps offer come at a cheap, affordable price. Hotels might have their own way of making you feel entertained, but camps have a simple, unique charm about them that can’t be replicated by a hotel, no matter how expensive it may be. * More freedom: A sense of decorum needs to be maintained in hotels. As much as you would like to release the inner primate inside you, doing so in a hotel is ill-advised. At a campsite, however,
Open to All | Free to Attend things are simpler in nature. The
areas are not closed off by walls or restricted areas — you can lose yourself for hours just walking around and taking in the sights. There is a sense of openness in camping, and the sheer scope of activities. Number of recreational activities: From trekking to adventure sports to starting a bonfire, the amount of activities while camping is huge, and will certainly keep the average person busy and
entertained. An open mind and an inclination to try out new, adventurous things are two very important qualities that one must have in order to maximize their camping experience and satisfaction. * Unique experience: There is nothing new or exciting about staying in a hotel. On the other hand, exploration and wonderment are some of the key features of camping that elevate it to another level.
