enowned British physicist Professor Stephen Hawking, who shaped modern cosmology and inspired millions despite suffering from a life-threatening condition, died this week — leaving millions in mourning globally. He was 76. His family released a statement confirming his death at his home in Cambridge. “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years,” Hawking’s children said in a statement. “His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humor inspired people across the world. He once said, “It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him for ever,” the statement added. Hawking is survived by three children — Robert, Lucy and Timothy — from his first marriage to Jane Wilde, and three grandchildren. The physicist was born on January 8, 1942 in Oxford, England. Known the world over for his acclaimed book A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes, Hawking was diagnosed with
“Indians are so good at mathematics and physics”
NEW DELHI: It was January 2001 when British physicist Stephen Hawking came to India for the first time, later describing the 16-day long tour as “magnificent”. In the first leg of the tour in Mumbai, Hawking addressed an international physics seminar at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). He was felicitated with the first “Sarojini Damodaran Fellowship” during the “Strings 2001” conference. Hawking delivered several lec-
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — a progressive neuro-degenerative disease — in 1963 at age 21, The Guardian newspaper said. Hawking’s doctors gave him nearly two years to live but he defied medical history and survived for decades. For the rest of his life, the physicist used a wheelchair to move around and a speech synthesizer that allowed him to speak in a computerized voice with an American accent. For Hawking, the early diagnosis of his terminal disease ignited a fresh sense of purpose. “Although there was a cloud hanging over my future, I found, to my surprise, that I was enjoying life in the present more than before. I began to make progress with my research,” he once said. “My goal is simple. It is a com-
tures during the five-day seminar, including one titled “The Universe in a Nutshell,” Quartz reported. Hawking met then President K.R. Narayanan at Rashtrapati Bhavan who later described the 45minute meeting with the British physicist as “an unforgettable experience”. “Indians are so good at mathematics and physics”, the British theoretical physicist had told the President. As per Narayanan, Hawking was the “symbol of human hope for handicaps.

plete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all,” Hawking added. With fellow physicist Roger Penrose, Hawking merged Einstein’s theory of relativity with quantum theory, suggesting that space and time began with the Big Bang and end in black holes. In 1974, Hawking proposed what is known as his most significant theory that black holes can emit sub-atomic particles. Published for the first time in 1988, A Brief History of Time stayed on the Sunday Times bestsellers list for an unprecedented 237 weeks. It sold 10 million copies and was translated into 40 different languages. Hailed as one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Albert Einstein, Hawking never won a Nobel Prize.

ith 67 per cent Indian businesses hit by ransomware — 38 per cent twice — they are at a high risk of repeated ransomware attacks and are vulnerable to exploits, a new report warned this week. While $13.74 million were spent by three per cent of the organizations globally to rectify the impact of ransomware, India’s share was the highest at $1.17 million, said cybersecurity leader Sophos. “We’re aware of cybercriminals unleashing four different ransomware families in half-hour increments to ensure at least one
evades security and completes the attack,” said Sunil Sharma, Managing Director Sales at Sophos India & Saarc. The survey polled more than 2,700 IT decision-makers across mid-sized businesses in 10 countries worldwide, including India, the US, Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, UK, Australia, Japan and South Africa.
ove to gaze at the clouds and admire nature's creativity? NASA invites you to take part in a citizen science cloud observation challenge. As a part of its GLOBE Program — an international science and education program beginning March 15 through April 15 — citizen scientists of all ages can make up to 10 cloud observations per day using the GLOBE Observer app or one of the other data entry options (for trained GLOBE members). "The GLOBE Program is offering this challenge to show people how important it is to NASA to have citizen scientist observations, observations from the ground up,"
Marile Colon Robles, from NASA's Langley Research Centre in Virginia, US, said in a statement. "We're going from winter to spring, so the types of storms will change, which will also change the types of cloud," Robles said. The challenge participants with the most observations will be congratulated by a NASA scientist in a video posted on the GLOBE Program's website and on social media. Cloud data collected by citizen scientists are highly valued and used
by researchers because it helps to validate data from Earth-observing instruments. "Looking at what an observer recorded as clouds and looking at their surface observations really helps us better understand the images that were matched from the satellite," Robles said. One does not need to be a cloud-gazing pro to participate. For those who want to be part of the challenge but don't have a lot of experience identifying clouds, Robles offers the following advice: "Just go outside".
