Trump scores a hat-trick Polls show his support in all demographics, virtually paving his way towards party nomination
D
onald Trump cemented his frontrunner status in the Republican presidential race with a third consecutive victory in Nevada caucuses as his two major rivals Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio failed to arrest his winning streak. With the real estate mogul with over 42 percent votes leading with double digit margins over Rubio and Cruz, who are fighting for the second place, major news channels were quick to declare him the winner shortly after the polls closed. Significantly, exit polls showed Trump’s support across all demographics, virtually paving his way towards party nomination and strengthening as it did his position before March 1 Super Tuesday when 12 states hold nominating
Uber driver accused of killing six people CHICAGO: An Uber driver was arrested for shooting randomly in three locations in Kalamazoo in Michigan in the US, killing six people and injuring two others. Jason Dalton was charged with murder, assault with intent to commit murder and using a firearm during the commission of a felony, prosecuting attorney Jeff Getting said. Dalton, 45, appeared at a hearing on February 22 and the attorney described him as cooperative yet non-remorseful. Investigators have yet to discern Dalton's motive. Dalton's shooting spree has again aroused concerns about the safety of Uber.
favorite Rubio has yet to win a state. Rubio’s entire campaign is predicated on other candidates dropping out and Rubio picking up their support, CNN said. But there’s no indication that anyone with a substantial base of support will bow out before midMarch, and that may be too late, it said. For Trump, “the outcome in
Nevada is another sign of his campaign’s durability and the breadth of his appeal,” said the New York Times. “He won over independent voters in New Hampshire and evangelicals in South Carolina, and prevailed in Nevada, where Mormon voters and rural activists wield influence,” it noted. “This latest triumph may only encourage Mr. Trump in the brash campaign style that has alienated many Republican officials and mainstream voters,” the Times said. “The results are likely to reinforce the sense among national Republican leaders that only direct confrontation can block Mr. Trump from claiming the party’s nomination, because none of the party’s most powerful voting blocs seems likely to thwart him on its own,” the Times said.

Plan seeks Guantanamo Bay facility’s closure IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Barack Obama on February 23 unveiled a long-stalled closure plan of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, a move which would certainly set off a fierce clash with Republican lawmakers. Speaking at a press conference in the White House, Obama said for the 91 detainees currently held in Guantanamo Bay, some would be transferred, and his administration would review the threat posed by detainees who were not eligible for transfers and identify those eligible
for military trials. In his apparently last-ditch effort to seek cooperation from a hostile Republican-controlled Congress, Obama made a financial argument for closing the controversial prison overseas. “The defense department estimates that this plan compared to keeping Guantanamo open would lower costs up to $85 million a year,” said Obama. “Over 20 years, the savings would be up to $1.7 billion.” However, the closure plan left unanswered a crucial question as to where the administration would put some detainees ineligible for trans-

Kanhaiya’s bail hearing adjourned Arrested JNU students deny raising “anti-national” slogans, grilled for hours IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he Delhi High Court adjourned this week the bail plea hearing of JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar, arrested on sedition charges, till February 29 after Delhi Police said it will seek his fresh remand to “unearth any larger conspiracy”. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Tushar Mehta, appearing for Delhi Police, told Justice Pratibha Rani that they were moving a remand application to seek Kanhaiya’s police custody for the third time. Police will confront Kanhaiya with fellow Jawaharlal Nehru University students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya who surrendered, Mehta added. He said the police remand of Kanhaiya, who is currently in judicial custody till March 2, is required to confront him with
Khalid and Anirban and “unearth any larger conspiracy”. The court deferred the hearing till February 29 after Kanhaiya’s advocates Kapil Sibal and Rebecca John asked the court to postpone the hearing as they will oppose the police remand application. “Since two JNU students surrendered last (Tuesday) night, we need to confront them with Kanhaiya,” ASG Mehta said. Allowing police to move the remand application before the concerned court, Justice Pratibha Rani said: “We have to ensure that they don’t suffer any scratch, that’s my only concern.” Delhi Police opposed the bail plea of Kanhaiya and submitted a status report to the court. If Kanhaiya is released on bail, “he may create law and order problems by conducting meetings in his support, hampering arrest of other accused people”, said police. Kanhaiya “did not cooperate at

Arrested JNU students grilled NEW DELHI: Jawaharlal Nehru University students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, who are facing sedition charges for allegedly raising “anti-India” slogans on the varsity campus, were grilled for five hours in police custody where they denied raising “anti-national” slogans, a police source said. Both Khalid and Bhattacharya surrendered before the police late night on February 23. The other three students Ashutosh Kumar, Rama Naga and Anant Prakash Narayan, facing the same charges, are yet to surren-
der. According to sources, the arrested students told police that the event was unorganized and was held without permission and pro-separatists slogans may have been raised at the gathering. “Ashutosh managed the poster and banners of the programme while a person Riyaz decided the slogans to be raised at the event,” an official who knew about the interrogation told IANS declining to be named. “A girl volunteer managed social media and networking for the event,” the official added.
all during the course of the interrogation”, they said. The report also said Delhi Police was looking into the “linkage between Kanhaiya and some foreign elements with their mouths covered” who were present during the February 9 event at the university. Kanhaiya was arrested in a sedition case on February 12 after the event held on the university campus against the execution of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. He allegedly shouted anti-India slogans at the event, according to police. The high court posted the matter for February 29.

Jat stir called off in Rajasthan
H
aryana saw relative calm for the first time in 10 days this week as Jats seeking job quotas withdrew from the streets or were chased away. Highway and rail traffic was restored even as security forces were on alert to foil clashes between Jats and non-Jats. In a sign of people’s anger over the mindless violence that rocked the state, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar faced angry traders and residents in Rohtak town and was forced to retreat and leave for Delhi. Khattar, who reached Rohtak for the first time after widespread violence during the Jat agitation devastated many parts of the town, vowed not to spare those guilty of rioting and arson that crippled Haryana. “A high-level probe will be conducted into the (violence) and strict action taken against officers and employees of police and administration involved in this,” Khattar told the media in Rohtak.
JAIPUR: The Jat community in Rajasthan has called off its stir, a minister announced -- the third day of the agitation demanding reservations which saw a mob try to set afire the engine of a goods train. “The Jat agitation has been called off following talks,” Social Welfare Minister Arun Chaturvedi, who had been holding discussions with Jat leaders, said in Bharatpur. Prominent Jat leader and Congress legislator Vishwendra Singh said the state government accepted
all the major demands of the community. “I request my community members to lift the road and rail blockades,” Vishwendra Singh said at a press conference in Bharatpur. “We have requested the OBC Commission to visit the areas and study and assess the social and economic status of the Jat community soon in Bharatpur and Dholpur districts. “The state government has accepted our demand and it (government) will urge the OBC Commission to visit the areas soon,” he added.
People from Jat community block railway track near Pataudi in Gurgaon.
In a fine balancing act, he said the Jat community will get job quotas under a special provision and the OBC quota of 27 percent won’t be disturbed. The OBC communities don’t want Jats to be included in the OBC bracket. “The government will make a separate provision for (Jats) reservation,” said Khattar.
In New Delhi, Khattar attended a meeting with union Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkiaih Naidu and other ministers who are part of a high-powered panel studying the issue of reservation for Jats in other states. Nineteen people were killed and nearly 200 injured in the nine days when Jats held Haryana to ransom,
and in the process disrupted life in large parts of northern India. As Monday was a holiday on account of Sant Ravidas Jayanti, Tuesday was the first working day after the Jat agitation. Most schools were, however, shut. Traffic was restored on the busy Delhi-Ambala national highway (NH-1) after three days. Three peo-
ple were killed when Jat protesters blocked the highway on Monday, forcing security forces to open fire. Traffic was also restored on the Delhi-Hisar NH-10, especially near Sampla town, police said. The worst affected districts in the Jat agitation were Rohtak, Bhiwani, Hisar, Sonipat, Jhajjar, Jind, Panipat and Kaithal.

Sikh appointed Kuala Lumpur police chief KUALA LUMPUR: An Indian-origin Sikh officer has been appointed Kuala Lumpur’s commissioner of police — the highest police rank achieved by a Sikh in Malaysia, media reports said. Amar Singh will replace Tajuddin Mohamed, who will move to federal headquarters as the deputy director of commercial CID on March 14, freemalaysiatoday.com reported on February 21. Amar Singh held the position of deputy director of CID when his new appointment was announced last week. According to the Malaysia Samachar website, the highest police rank previously achieved by a Sikh was senior assistant commissioner-I when Santokh Singh became police chief of Selangor state. Amar Singh’s father and maternal grandfather were both policemen. His father Ishar Singh joined the Federated Malay States Police in 1939, a year after coming to Malaya from Punjab. His maternal grandfather, Bachan Singh, was a constable who joined the force in the early 1900s. Amar Singh graduated with B.Sc from Universiti Malaya (UM). wo infants were among the 23 people killed when their Nepal airlines plane — missing for over four hours — was discovered crashed in the Himalayas on February 24, a minister said. Civil Aviation Minister Ananda Prasad Pokharel confirmed the crash. The Tara Air Viking 9NAHH Twin Otter took off from Pokhara at 7.47 a.m., deputy director of Pokhara airport Yogendra Kumar told IANS. It was headed to Jomsom town in Mustang district. Located 200 km west of capital Kathmandu, Pokhara is the second largest city of Nepal. It is a popular tourist destination and the kick-off point for climbing expeditions to the 8,091-meter Mt Annapurna. The aircraft, which was added to the Tara Air fleet last September,

said Civil Aviation Minister Pokharel, quoting Nepal Army officials at the crash site in a forest in Soli Ghoptebhir of Myagdi district. Army spokesperson Brigadier General Tara Bahadur Karki too confirmed that all 23 people aboard the plane were killed in the

ROME: Italy’s foreign ministry on February 23 summoned US Ambassador John Phillips after local media reports cited new Wikileaks files that suggest the US spied on ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi and his closest aides from 2008-2011. Italy wants clarification about the reports that Berlusconi and some of his aides’ phones were tapped in 2011, the foreign ministry said in a statement, referring to articles published by left-leaning Italian newspaper La Repubblica and weekly magazine L’Espresso. The NSA allegedly monitored Berlusconi and his closest collaborators at a time when his last government was on the verge of collapse amid an unprecedented recession, the “Bunga bunga” sex scandals and US concerns about Berlusconi’s ‘special relationship’ with Russia, according to La Repubblica and L’Espresso.
crash. Karki said a Nepal Army team has reached the crash site. The plane’s wreckage was found after four hours of intense search and rescue operation. Police constable Phool Kumar Thapa Magar who was among the first to reach the crash site said it was situated on a very treacherous terrain and the debris of the plane were scattered in an area of some 200 meters. Pilot Roshan Manandhar, during his final conversation with Pokhara Air Traffic Control, mentioned that the flight was normal, said Jasoda Subedi, chief air traffic controller at Pokhara airport. “See you back, Ghorepani normal, good day” were the last words from the captain. “The weather at Pokhara and Jomsom is fine today (Wednesday). So we have no clue about what went wrong,” said Bhim Raj Rai, media officer at Tara Airlines.
ollowing a public outcry, Egyptian authorities have admitted that a military court “mistakenly” sentenced a four-yearold child to life in prison for “committing murder” when he was only one-year-old. The little boy, Ahmed Mansour Korani, was convicted in absentia of four counts of murder, eight of attempted murder, vandalizing property, disturbance of peace and threatening police officers. His father who recently appeared on an Egyptian channel to recount his ordeal, after he had been remanded in custody for four months of pending investigations.
During the interview, the father held tight his four-year-old boy as he cried injustice. He appeared frightened as he appealed to the authorities to not take his son from him. “I’m a poor helpless man, the son
of this land and I intend no harm to anyone but I have nothing to do with it,” the father cried. Lawyer Mahmoud Abu Kaf, who was part of Korani’s defense team, told Al Arabiya news that they submitted the child’s birth certificate to the prosecution as evidence of his young age, but it was not considered by the judges. “The moment they reached his home, the officers asked for Korani but his father told them the suspect you’re looking for is a baby. The officer thought the father was poking fun at him and dragged the father to jail, keeping him in custody for four months of pending investigations. He was later released when the judge realized he was innocent.”

heft of corpses is on the rise in rural Shanxi as the old custom of “ghost marriage” has resurfaced in the northern Chinese province. Shanxi’s Hongtong county has reported at least three dozen thefts of female corpses in the last three years, Xinhua news agency quoted police officer Lin Xu as saying. In ghost marriage rituals, female skeletons are reinforced with steel wires and clothed before they are
buried alongside dead bachelors as “ghost brides.” Failure to find a burial partner for unmarried male relatives is thought to bring bad luck, according to rural folk belief. Ghost marriage rituals were practiced throughout China’s feudal dynasties and were especially popular in the 10th century during the Song Dynasty. The government ordered people to cease the practice after the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949. However, rural Chinese people, who tend to uphold old customs and rituals, have con-

ohit Sharma's flamboyant innings of 83 runs not just took India out of trouble, but also helped win the Asia Cup opener against Bangladesh by a comprehensive 45 runs at the Sher-eBangla National Stadium here on February 24. Put in to bat in the first Twenty20 International match of an Asia Cup, India put up a challenging total of 166/6 with man-ofthe-match Rohit notching up a 55-ball 83. He got good support from Yuvraj Singh (15) and later allrounder Hardik Pandya (31) played a superb cameo. The trio rescued the visiting team from a tottering position of 42/3 in the eighth over. In reply, the hosts never really took off and kept losing wickets regularly which hindered their chances of winning on home soil to hand the match to India. On what was a very green top which turned out to be low and slow with the ball not coming on to the bat, the Indian batsmen struggled early on. They misjudged the pace of the wicket and several of them perished due to wayward shots. First to go was opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan (2), who was bowled by Al-Amin Hossain. Vice-captain Virat Kohli (8) did not get to the pitch of the ball to be caught at mid-off off hosts skipper
Mashrafe bin Mortaza. Left-hander Suresh Raina looked dangerous after hitting two boundaries but he was also bowled for 13. Later Pandya took over and he upped the ante with his 18-ball 31 cameo. Bangladesh pacer Hossain bowled well to take three wickets. India pacer Ashish Nehra was on

target right from the start of the Bangladeshi innings, taking a credible 3/23 from his four overs. Bangladesh kept losing wickets at regular intervals and never got any partnership going. Sabbir Rahman was the only one who looked batting with intent in his knock of 44 runs, hitting two boundaries and sixes each. But once he got out, it was more or less over the hosts as the asking rate kept climbing quite quickly. Indian bowlers Jasprit Bumrah, Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were quite economical with none of them going for more than 6.5 runs per over.

Unseeded Chinese pair Yi-Fan Xu and Saisai Zheng fought hard but the much experienced top seeds came out better, winning 64, 4-6, 10-4 in an hour and 25 minutes on the outdoor hard courts of the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex on February 23. Sania and Martina, who got a first round bye, have not lost a single match this year, having won four tournaments earlier in Sydney, Brisbane, St. Petersburg and the Australian Open in Melbourne. Sania and Martina’s game went down in the second set as they failed to even earn a single breakpoint opportunity. On the other hand, they give away five chances. Though they saved four of them, Xu and Zheng did well to
convert one breakpoint chance which was enough to seal the set in their favor to push the match into the decider. The Jordanian former FIFA executive committee member had voiced concerns that his rivals were exerting undue pressure on the 209 voters to record proof that they had cast their vote a certain way. FIFA responded by banning mobile phones from the voting booth but would not agree to a request from the Ali camp.

DRINKING IN PREGNANCY HARMS KIDS
Alcohol during pregnancy may their put children at the risk of impairment in kidney blood flow in adulthood and heightened neurological problems IANS, NEW YORK
M
others who consume alcohol during pregnancy put their children at the risk of impairment in kidney blood flow in adulthood and heightened neurological problems caused by a stroke, warns a study. In the study conducted on mice,
the blood flow analysis showed evidence for increased arterial resistance within the kidneys -- a sign of possible early onset renal hypertension in the male offspring that were exposed to alcohol before birth. “The finding indicates that in mice exposed to alcohol before birth, sex appears to play some role in whether the volume of damaged
tissue in the brain correlates with functional and neurological impairment,” said lead researcher Shameena Bake, assistant professor at Texas A & M Health Science Centre in the US. Assessing neurological damage caused by stroke, the researchers found greater levels of impairment in the six female and six male mice that had fetal alcohol exposure,
compared with the dozen that were not exposed to alcohol. Moreover, the measurements of the stroke-damaged area of the brain were linked to scores on neurological testing in the females, but not the males, with fetal alcohol exposure, the researchers maintained. Researchers administered ethanol to six pregnant mice twice daily for four days, from gestation-
al day 12 through 15, and administered water to six other pregnant mice. Using ultrasound testing, the team measured blood flow in both male and female offspring of the mice at three months of age. The study was presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2016.

ext time when you try to imitate the way your spouse eats, pause for a moment as a couple’s lifestyle choices can increase their chances of becoming obese regardless of their genetic profile, finds a study. According to researchers, choices made by couples in middle age -including those linked to diet and exercise -- have a much greater impact on them than the lifestyle each shared during their childhood. “The environment you share with your partner in adulthood also influences whether you become obese and this is more important than your upbringing,” said lead researcher Chris Haley from the University of Edinburgh

E in Britain. The findings, published in the journal PLOS Genetics, reinforce the message that lifestyle changes in adulthood can have a significant impact in tackling obesity. The research helped scientists to better understand links between
obesity, genetics and lifestyle habits. The team analysed data provided by 20,000 people. “The findings also show that even people who come from families with a history of obesity can reduce their risk by changing their lifestyle habits,” Haley added.
Almonds boost your overall health IANS, NEW YORK

ating moderate amount of almonds daily right from the childhood days can drastically improve health later in life, a study has found. “If a parent is able to incorporate almonds or different healthy snacks into a child’s diet, it’s more likely that the child will choose those snacks later on in life,” said lead researcher Alyssa Burns from University of Florida. To reach the conclusion,
researchers studied the effect that the addition of almonds can have on a person’s diet quality. For a 14-week study, data was collected from 28 pairs of parents and
children. The parents were instructed to eat 42.52 grams of almonds each day and the children were encouraged to eat 14.17 grams of almonds or an equivalent amount of almond butter each day. The findings showed that after the almond intervention, the average “Healthy Eating Index” score for parents and children increased. The results suggest that whole food approaches, like adding almonds to diet, may be an achievable way to improve overall health.
nsure proper sleep if you want to boost your memory as brain activity during sleep sorts through several experiences we encounter every day and retains only important information in memory pockets, say researchers. The findings showed that patterns of brain activity that occur during the day are replayed at fastforward speed during sleep. The key result is that sleep replay strengthens the microscopic connections between nerve cells that are active -- a process deemed critical for consolidating memories. “These findings are about the fundamental processes that occur
in the brain during the consolidation of memory during sleep,” said lead researcher Jack Mellor from University of Bristol in a paper published in the journal Cell Reports. The new discoveries provide further evidence for the benefits of a good night’s sleep. Good sleep is important because the bad night sleep often experienced by both the healthy population and people with schizophrenia or Alzheimer’s disease. “It also seems that the successful replay of brain activity during sleep is dependent on the emotional state of the person when they are learning. This has major implications for how we teach and enable people to learn effectively,” Mellor said.

‘Except Priyanka, not many have managed to break out into West’
A
ctress Sonakshi Sinha says besides Priyanka Chopra, not many actors from the Indian film industry have managed to "break out into the West". "So far, except Priyanka not many people have managed to break out into the West in a big way. Because I feel they don't have great roles for Indian actors. But, Priyanka has done in that way. She has broken all the barriers. I think she is doing fantastic," Sonakshi said at the Zee Cine Awards 2016 here on february 20. While an international break is always touted as a big deal in Bollywood, the Dabangg actress said she is happy working in Bollywood.

Awards don't matter much in my life: Salman Khan
S
uperstar Salman Khan, who won accolades for his performance in films like Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, and even got nominated at various award functions this year, feels that the "young generation should be given a chance to win awards" as "awards don't matter much in my life". The actor was present at the red carpet of Zee Cine Awards 2016, held here on Saturday night. Stating that he loves attending award functions and performing, he said: "I feel very happy when others get awards but they don't matter much in my life. I like award functions as the whole industry comes together," "Delete me from the competition. We are here since long, we have been nomi-

A
ctress Parineeti Chopra has revealed that actor Ranveer Singh spotted her acting talent even before producer Aditya Chopra and director Maneesh Sharma. "Ranveer was the first person who caught me dancing on 'Sheila ki jawani' song in front of a mirror. He saw me from far and this Band Baaja Baaraat actor who had still not appeared in front of you all, told me that you are going to be an actress," Parineeti said at the Zee Cine Awards 2016. Adding to Parineeti's statement, Ranveer said: "See I discovered a 'heera' (diamond) first".
Indian cinema changing fast: Shah Rukh Khan
S
uperstar Shah Rukh Khan believes Indian cinema is "changing fast" thanks to young actor and actresses and asserts that it will be a while before international cinema can give competition to it. In an interview with CNN, SRK also said that the reason for this is "stardom". "As long as the star system is retained in this country, it will be sometime before international cinema takes in. But yeah, international stars are also becoming local stars. But like I said, Indian cinema is changing so fast with all the young actors and actresses. So, it will be quite a while before international cinema becomes actual competition," Shah Rukh said. The "Dilwale" actor quipped that unless Hollywood films have six songs, they are not competing with Indian films.

Sanju Baba released from jail Dutt was released around 8.35 a.m. local time from Pune’s Yerawada Central Jail where he served the remaining 42 months of his fiveyear-long rigorous imprisonment IANS, MUMBAI
B
ollywood actor Sanjay Dutt was set free from a Pune jail on February 25 and returned home here to savor ‘complete freedom’, 23 years after his legal problems began over his possession of an AK-47. Dutt was accorded a warm welcome as he stepped out of Mumbai airport after flying from Pune in a chartered aircraft with his family members. It was followed by a tumultuous reception in Mumbai. Dutt was released around 8.35 a.m. from Pune’s Yerawada Central Jail where he served the remaining 42 months of his five-year-long rigorous imprisonment.
Carrrying a large shoulder bag and a small plastic bag containing documents, Dutt stepped out of the YCJ, kept the bags on the ground, turned around to kiss the ground and stood up to salute the Indian tricolor fluttering atop the jail building. From there, accompanied by his wife Manyata, their twin kids Iqra and Shahran, sister and ex-MP Priya Dutt, close friends - including director Rajkumar Hirani - left for the Lohegaon Airport on Pune’s outskirts. Dutt and his family boarded the waiting chartered plane and flew to Mumbai where a large number of fans were waiting for them outside the airport building.
Fans celebrate Sanjay Dutt’s freedom in unique ways MUMBAI: A few die-hard fans of Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, who became a free man on February 25, are celebrating his freedom in style. Mumbai restaurateur Khalid Hakim, owner of Mughalai eatery Noor Mohammadi Hotel, has started doling out free “Chicken Sanju Baba”, a signature recipe created by Dutt in 2010, to all patrons and fans. The special limited offer opened at noon on Thursday and will continue till midnight, Hakim said adding that the place was already overcrowded with eager people waiting to gorge on “Chicken Sanju Baba”. “It was in 2010 on one of his visits that he created a special gravybased chicken dish for us and we named it after him as ‘Chicken Sanju Baba’ on the menu card. Dutt also gave me his written consent to pre-
pare and sell it to our patrons,” said Hakim, who is the third generation owner of the 93-year-old restaurant (opened in 1923). Bandra’s famous eatery, “Bhaijaanz Restaurant” is offering a flat 50 percent discount to mark Dutt’s release and has launched a new dish “Bhai-Baba Chal Mere Bhai”. “It is a combination of minced mutton and chicken as Salman Khan loves mutton and Sanjay Dutt relishes chicken. This is our humble tribute to their great friendship,” said the restaurant manager.
From there, they drove to the famed Siddhi Vinayak Temple at Prabhadevi in Dadar and prayed to Maharashtra’s most popular diety,
Lord Ganesh, even as thousands of fans cheered them. The next stop was the Baba Kabrastan where the grave of his

mother, the late actress Nargis Dutt, is located. He prayed there too. Dutt sported a dark blue shirt and jeans, minus his traditional sunglasses, salt-pepper sparse hair and a stubbly beard, appearing physically weary but mentally relaxed. Near his Bandra home, there was a contingent of drummers who played a deafening welcome tune for Dutt. Their were also large posters and huge banners welcoming the actor, and a special poster welcoming ‘Papa’ and ‘Uncle’ and ‘Bro’ from his wife and kids, sisters, nieces and nephews. There were celebrations of different types organized by his fans and well-wishers. These include a free meal of ‘Chicken Sanju Baba’ at south Mumbai’s Noor Mohammadi Hotel, 50 percent discount on all meals and free servings of a specially created item ‘Bhai-Baba Chal Mere Bhai’ at the Bhaijaanz Restaurant in Bandra, while an autorickshaw driver Sandeep Bachche offered free rides in Bandra to mark his freedom.
‘Neerja’ - A glorious tribute to the braveheart Bhanot
N
eerja, a biopic, encapsulates the life of Neerja Bhanot, head purser, Pan Am flight 73, which was hijacked in Karachi in September 1986 where she laid down her life heroically, trying to save the passengers. Set inside Pan Am Flight 73 and Bombay’s Navjeevan Society, this is a well made, crisp film that takes the audience through Neerja’s short life of 23 years. And as Neerja, a die-hard Rajesh Khanna fan used to say, “Zindagi badi honi chahiye, lambi nahin (Life should be grand, not long)”. She lived her life to the fullest and brought joy to those whose lives she touched, till the very end. Director Ram Madhvani adroitly showcases Neerja’s life and the

actual incident of the plane getting hijacked in a brilliant narrative. He gives viewers a peak into her life with her family, her strong bond with her mother, her attachment
to her father, the lessons she learnt from them and her traumatic marriage, in a smooth flowing plot, the focus of which never wavers. The hijacking incident and the
manner in which Neerja attends to the passengers, rescues them with single-minded devotion and confidence, remains the centre stage of the film. Yet, we get glimpses of her life, which tell us the kind of person she was. Sonam Kapoor as Neerja Bhanot slips into the role with ease. Whether it is playfully mouthing the dialogues of her favorite superstar Rajesh Khanna, chiding her
mother for her unnecessary concern, or staring adversity in the face as a composed flight purser, she makes it all look effortless as an actor. But it is Shabana Azmi as Rama Bhanot, Neerja’s spirited and loving mother, who steals your heart with a natural and heart-rending performance. She is every inch Neerja’s mother whether it is waking her up lovingly before a flight or promising her a yellow salwar kameez for her birthday. The last scene where she gives an emotional speech on the first death anniversary of Neerja, is easily one of the highlights of the film. Shekhar Ravijani, of the VishalShekhar music director duo, makes his debut as an actor.

More foot patrols for Chicago soon BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Police officers will now be assigned day and night foot patrol shifts on Thorndale Avenue, Bryn Mawr Avenue and Argyle Street for day and night shifts, according to Ald. Harry Osterman (48th). Cmdr. Sean Loughran, of the Lincoln District, announced the new evening shift for Argyle Street last week. The extra foot
C
patrol “will positively contribute to public safety in the area,” Osterman said. “We have seen these vibrant commercial districts change in a positive way while having these officers present. This helps the community to get to know officers and build relationships while also helping the officers get to know the neighborhoods and residents,” he said. A daytime foot patrol officer is also assigned to Devon Avenue.

Many top dignitaries were present when Shobhana Johri Verma (extreme right), director of South Asian Voters Outreach program at the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners, briefed the media and South Asian community members.
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- The South Asian community is one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in Illinois. And considering how important a year is ahead politically, Shobhana Johri Verma, director of South Asian Voters Outreach program at the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners, briefed the media and community members at the Indo America Center on February 25. South Asian community, community leaders and political leaders attended the event even as Early Voting was set to begin on February 29. Ira Silverstein, State Senator, Debra Silverstein, Alderman of the 50th Ward and Lou Lang, State Representative, spoke on the occasion. Dr. Ausaf Sayeed, Consul General of India, was the keynote speaker. This year marks the first time that early voting was scheduled to begin 40 days before a General Primary. In past election cycles, early voting began 15-22 days before election. Verma said that Early Voting had become a very important part of elections. “ T h e g row i n g c o n c e r n ove r l ow participation of South Asian voters despite their growth in population in the past decade will continue until we increase groundwork and reach out to community members and discuss
C
the power of every single vote.” The meet was hosted by the Board of Elections to increase voter registration efforts and further educate the South Asian community about the electoral process and voting rights. Verma joined the board in January as the “first-ever liaison with Chicagoland’s AsianIndian voters and community organizations to recruit Election Judges and provide language assistance to voters. Her work involves coordinating language assistance at polling stations for Asian-Indian voters, as well as outreach to their community groups. It involves recruiting bilingual judges of election, providing those fluent in English/ Hindi, English/Gujarati and English/Urdu, the opportunity to earn $170 to $195 while performing an important community service. Indian helps women stuck in icy weather BY A STAFF WRITER ALUDA, NC – At first blush, you may count down Hitesh Patel as just another gas station owner. But as two woman drivers stuck in the cold weather soon realized the other day, he is made of a different stock. Patel, who owns a gas station in Saluda, North Carolina, about 90 miles west of Charlotte, usually winds up business at 10 pm every night. But conditions there were pretty icy on February 15, and at least two cars slid off the road. One of the unfortunate drivers was a woman who was all alone. The other one was also a woman who had her four children with her. And all of them ended up at the gas station with no way to get to a hotel. After all, the roads were too dangerous to drive on. Any other gas station owner would have just

turned a blind eye to the two women in distress and closed shop after the regular business hours. But the golden-hearted Indian American saw their plight and instantly came to their rescue. Patel stayed open all wintry night and let everyone crash in the break room. He even gave them chairs, cots and a couch to sleep, brought in a space heater and also hooked up a TV for the kids.

BY A STAFF WRITER WASHINGTON, DC -- Nearly 60 per cent of illegal immigrants identified by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement as criminal threats are not deported and are eventually released, the latest example of the Obama administration’s failed immigration policy. Internal ICE figures show that in fiscal
2015, the agency encountered 152,393 illegal immigrants labeled a criminal threat, mostly in jails, but charged 64,116. About another 88,000 were not processed for deportation, according to the Center for Immigration Studies’ Jessica Vaughan. The numbers are even worse for those who ICE asks local police and sheriffs to detain but never collect.

Man assaults cabbie
Sikh comedian made to remove turban at SFO BY A STAFF WRITER AN FRANCISCO, CA-- Indian Canadian Sikh comedian Jasmeet Singh was forced to take off his turban during a security check at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) on February 22. The incident comes weeks after a Sikh American actor was barred from boarding a flight in Mexico for refusing to take off his turban. Singh, who is known on the internet as ‘JusReign,’ posted about the incident on Twitter. “So the (TSA agents) made me take off my turban in extra screening or they said I wouldn’t be able to be let through to catch my flight,” he tweeted. Singh was scheduled to fly from San Francisco to Toronto February 22, and was asked to go into a private room for the extra screening. “After finding absolutely nothing wrong because a turban is just cloth and the whole thing is stupid, I ask for a mirror to tie it back again,” Singh went on via Twitter. “The agent tells me there are no mirrors and that I can just walk down the terminal to the nearest restroom without my turban on,” Singh tweeted. Turbans are mandatory in public for Sikh men. On February 9, Waris Ahluwalia, a Sikh

BY A STAFF WRITER ROWN HEIGHTS,NY – The police are looking for a man who hit a cabbie on the head with a bottle in a dispute over change from his ride to the neighborhood earlier this month. The assault happened at 4 am on the corner of Atlantic and Rochester avenues in Crown Heights where the 47-year-old cab driver was dropping off the suspect. The two got into an argument over the change from his payment, leading the passenger to hit the driver on the back of the head with a bottle, the police said. The passenger ran out of the car and fled on foot. The driver was treated at the nearby Interfaith Hospital for a laceration to his head. The police released a photo of the suspect taken inside the cab at the time of the incident. He was last seen wearing a black jacket.

Later, Mexico’s flag carrier apologized to the 41-year-old actor saying it “recognizes and is proud of the diversity of its passengers.” “We apologize to Mr. Waris Ahluwalia for the bad experience he went through with one of our security personnel,” Aeromexico had said in a statement.
Chicago student wins $1m Powerball prize BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Nirmal Dhamodarasamy, a graduate student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, is still in shock since he won $1,000,000 playing Powerball. A few weeks ago, he decided to try his luck in a different way and instead of buying a ticket at a store, he bought a Powerball subscription via the Illinois Lottery’s online sales channel. “It was very convenient to sign up and buy my tickets online.” Dhamodarasamy won $1 million when he matched the five numbers in the February 6 Powerball drawing. The winning numbers were – 04 - 13 - 31 - 36 - 52 – and the Powerball number was 08. Before Dhamodarasamy received an email from the Illinois Lottery notifying him of his

win, he already knew he had won. “That same evening, after I purchased my subscription using Quick Pick numbers, I used the Illinois Lottery app to check the winning Powerball numbers. My heart started racing when I realized I had won the lottery. I still can’t believe I won a million dollars!” Dhamodarasamy, 23, is originally from
India and is completing his master’s degree in Industrial Engineering. His plans for the windfall include bringing his parents here from India for his graduation. When asked what prompted him to start playing Powerball online, he said, “The historic $1.5 billion jackpot sparked my interest. I wanted to try my luck even after it hit!” Illinois residents, 18 and over, can buy tickets for Powerball and all of the Illinois Lottery’s draw-based games online at illinoislottery.com or at nearly 8,000 retailers statewide. Players can also use the Illinois Lottery’s mobile app. The free app (the first of its kind in the United States) is available for download on iOS and Android devices and offers any Illinois adult the chance to purchase lottery tickets on their smartphone. Powerball drawings take place Wednesday and Saturday nights at 9:59 p.m.

father. The body of 55-year-old Prasad Moparti was discovered about 2:30 pm on February 22 in the Steamboat Slough, 5 miles south of Grand Island Mansion, according to the Sacramento County Coroner. A boater in the area reported seeing a body, and crews were soon able to get it out of the water. Moparti, who traveled from India to attend his daughter’s wedding, was reported missing since February 13 when he walked away from his daughter’s wedding reception at Grand Island Mansion by himself and never returned. According to Durga Moparti, her father had told her that he was going for a walk. Moparti, an Indian American analyst with WellPoint, believes her father walked to the bridge at Steamboat Slough, about three miles away, and slipped off the bridge and fell into the Sacramento River.
Gas station owner faces 20-year jail BY A STAFF WRITER EORIA, IL -- A federal grand jury in Peoria has returned a 20-count indictment against a New Jersey man accusing him of tax fraud. According to the indictment, Adnan Rashid, 34, was the sole owner of two Marathon gas stations in Peoria and 50 per cent owner of two additional Peoria Marathon stations. Rashid is alleged to have submitted false sales and used tax returns to the State of Illinois from January, 2007 to January, 2013. Rashid failed to report $16 million in sales, defrauding the state of $1.2 million in tax revenue, according to investigators. Rashid is also accused of tax evasion for personal taxes for tax years 2009 and 2010 and with filing or causing the filing of false federal corporation income tax returns for three of the gas stations for tax years 2009 and 2010. Rashid is charged with tax evasion, filing false tax returns and mail fraud. If convicted, the statutory maximum penalty for mail fraud (12 counts) is 20 years in prison. For false corporate returns (six counts), the statutory maximum penalty is three years in prison. The statutory maximum penalty for tax evasion (two counts) is five years. Each of the 20 counts carries a fine of up to $250,000. The US Clerk of the Court will issue a notice and a date for Rashid to appear in federal court in Peoria for arraignment.

Sling TV, DISH sign pact with Willow TV International BY A STAFF WRITER NGLEWOOD, CO -- Sling TV and DISH have announced they have expanded their strategic relationship with Willow TV International for the Willow cricket channel even as the eagerlyawaited ICC World Twenty20 2016 is set to begin on March 8. The agreement will hugely benefit cricket fans in the US as it will bring to them some of the world’s most popular cricket matches and events, including ICC, India, Pakistan, Australia, South Africa, West Indies and other top teams, in high definition. With Willow included in most major South Asian packages, Sling TV and DISH customers will have access to the most extensive cricket programming available in the US. This agreement marks the first time that major ICC events, including the ICC World Twenty20 2016, will be provided at no additional charge on the Willow cricket channel. Previously, many of these events have only been available via pay-per-view.

Sikh religious society’s bid to mobilize voters
P
ALATINE, IL – The Sikh Religious Society hosted a Civic Engagement and Voter’s Education Forum presented by speakers Reema Kapur and Zahra Saylawala from South Asian American Policy & Research Institute (SAAPRI) and Steve Hosik Moon from Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Chicago on February 21 at Sikh Gurudwara in Palatine Illinois. Rajinder Singh Mago, Public and Media Relations Coordinator, organized the event for the society. The speakers in the forum explained the importance of civic engagement, getting registered to vote and exercising their right to vote by actually casting their ballot. Also, they spoke about the importance of attendees encouraging and mobilizing others in the Asian American community to get the vote out. The presentation included specific examples backed by statistical data hitting the point home that every vote does count especially where many tight races are decided with a minuscule margin of a few hundred votes. A display table was also set up in the lobby with pertinent literature to educate the community members. The Asian American community’s population growth rate is such that by the year 2050, the Asian American community
( L-R ) Zahra Saylawala, Rajinder Singh Mago, Reema Kapur & Steve Moon
is expected to be the leading minority voting bloc in the US. We must get ourselves and our next generation involved in getting our rightful voices heard. For the 2016 general and primary elections, the South Asian American Policy and Research Institute (SAAPRI) and Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Chicago will be partnering to mobilize the South Asian community to get out the vote. The goal is to increase voting rates among South Asians in Illinois, particularly the greater Chicagoland area. Together, SAAPRI and Advancing Justice-Chicago will host forums for community discussion about the
importance of exercising the right to vote. There are over 242,000 South Asians living in Illinois, made up of people born abroad or in the United States and descending from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, or Bhutan. Among South Asians in Illinois, 67% are U.S. citizens and therefore eligible to register and vote. The next election in Illinois will take place on March 15, where voters will select Democratic and Republican Party nominees for President, Senate, and Congress, as well as the Illinois General Assembly and local races. The general election will be held on November 8.
Simple blood test to diagnose active TB BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK,NY -- A team of US researchers, including an Indian American scientist, has developed a simple blood test that can accurately diagnose active tuberculosis, a disease that globally infects 9.6 million people each year and kills 1.5 million. Researchers at Stanford University have found a gene expression that distinguishes patients with active TB from those with either latent TB or other diseases. “The test can be used not only for diagnosis and to inform treatment, but also to study the effectiveness of different treatments. The test’s hugely accurate negative response would be especially helpful in monitoring

the effectiveness of treatments during clinical trials,” said Purvesh Khatri, assistant professor at the university. Named as the Khatri test, it works on an ordinary blood sample and removes the need to collect sputum, a common test for TB. The results showed that the test could also signal a TB infection even if the individual also has human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The test won’t give a positive response if someone only has latent TB or has had a TB vaccine. The test is 86 per cent sensitive in children and it works in adults, too. And if the test comes up negative, it’s right 99 per cent of the time. That is, of 100 patients who test negative with the Khatri test, 99 do not have active TB, the researchers said.
Further, the test can potentially be done under relatively basic field conditions in rural and undeveloped areas of the world. “Any hospital should be able to perform the test. Villages without electricity could likely use ordinary blood samples and a solar-powered PCR machine, which multiplies strands of DNA, to accurately test people for active TB,” Khatri mentioned. Khatri’s team identified three human genes whose expression changes in a consistent pattern, revealing the presence of an active tuberculosis infection. The team validated the new three-gene test in a separate set of 1400 human samples from 11 different data sets, confirming the diagnostic power of the test.
BY A STAFF WRITER H I C AG O , I L - - C a b Drivers United/AFSCME Local 2500 has released statement in response to the horrific shootings in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where an Uber driver picked up fares in between shooting eight people, killing six. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victims of this senseless crime. The horrific murders in Kalamazoo are devastating not only to those directly affected by these senseless murders, but communities across the nation. Cities around the country must take steps to protect consumers and do everything in their power to prevent further horrific incidents like this. That’s why every Chicago cab driver must pass a law enforcement background check, and why our union has been calling for over a year, for the same rules to apply to Uber, Lyft and other so-called ‘rideshare’ services as well. Unfortunately, at the present time, the City of Chicago does not track crime data on drivers for services like Uber and Lyft like it does professional cab drivers. In Austin, Texas law enforcement compared the number of assaults and “unwanted sexual contact” in licensed taxis and rideshare vehicles. Of the 27 cases reported in 2015, as many as 20 occurred in Uber or Lyft vehicles, five occurred in a taxi and two occurred in an “independent rideshare”. Furthermore, there were 7 reported assaults committed by rideshare drivers. While the Austin police department works with assault victim advocacy organizations to recommend more stringent background checks for drivers, the City of Chicago is comfortable allowing companies like Uber and Lyft to self-report “deactivations” of drivers, with no oversight over the internal investigation. Instead of providing transparency, the City of Chicago has denied Freedom of Information Act requests for the names of rideshare drivers on the basis that the information is deemed “proprietary” while publishing the names of every cab driver. Even in cases of violent crime, the City of Chicago continues to bend over backward to accommodate services like Uber and Lyft to the direct detriment of public safety and accountability.”

t a time when universities all over the world are struggling to tackle sexual assaults against female students on the campus, a shocking survey has revealed that one in five British women were sexually assaulted or even raped when they were in schools. The survey conducted by nonprofit organization Plan UK found that 22 percent of 2,000 women surveyed reported having some experience of sexual touching, groping, flashing, sexual assault or rape while they were "in or around" school, Express.co.uk reported on Sunday. "Our findings show that schoolgirls have been suffering in silence for decades. These experiences can have a devastating impact. Unwanted sexual contact can affect a girl's self-esteem and educational achievements," Tanya Barron, CEO of Plan UK, was quoted as saying. The findings also showed that 61 percent of those who experienced some form of sexual assault did not report those to the school
Overuse of beauty creams gives acne NEW DELHI: Overuse of fairness and beauty creams is the root cause for acne and may lead to thinning of the skin, a leading dermatologist said here on Sunday. "The obvious side-effect of using beauty creams on face is thinning of the skin. Daily use of these creams leads to growth of acne besides skin losing its tightness and becoming thinner in return," said Rohit Batra, a skin doctor, at Acne India Summit held at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital here.
The one-day programme was aimed at providing education and refreshing knowledge of practising dermatologists regarding acne. A quiz contest and workshop to impart procedural skills to students and private practitioners were also conducted on the occasion. "A growing percentage of population aged 15 to 44 suffer from severe acne. Every patient wants a cure as no one wants to live with scars on their face," Batra said. He added that dermatologists are now equipped with state-of-theart technologies to help patients regain their confidence.
authorities. "The figures show those who are younger are more likely to have been victims -- suggesting the problem is on the rise," the report added. A latest survey by the British National Union of Students (NUS) found that British universities have "failed to tackle lad culture", with only one in 10 institutions including relevant policies in the freshers' welcome pack. Defined as "a subset of student life that promotes one particular masculinity", the "lad culture" - a local euphemism like 'eve teasing' in India for sexual harassment - has made campus life difficult for female students, especially freshers. Freshers report more and more cases of groping, sexual persecution and violence at British universities. In another NUS survey of over 2,000 men and women students, almost one third of respondents said they endure unwanted sexual comments about their body (37 percent of women). The report also found that "many" universities first ask victims to make efforts to solve matters "informally".
Wear your pencil skirt right Eat avocado to improve cholesterol levels IANS, NEW DELHI
W
hile other skirts may fall in and out of fashion, you can always rely on pencil skirts for creating a silhouette that is tasteful and timeless. Ragini Vijay, look good advisor of Myntra, has shared some innovative styling tips: l The off duty model: Simply pair an oversized T-shirt with a pencil skirt in an attention-grabbing color like red. l The girl next door: A knitted sweater adds a cozy texture to any outfit and dresses it down for a
casual affair. l The sports junkie: Keep your look sporty and casual by pairing a black pencil skirt with a graphicprinted T-shirt and hi-tops. l The alpha female: Pair a textured pencil skirt with a striped blouse and a structured blazer. Keep the colors light and breezy during the summer. l The urban warrior: Make your way through the urban jungle by pairing a striped pencil skirt with a denim shirt. Throw in a pair of brightly colored heels and bag to really make a statement.

E
ating fresh avocados every day can significantly change lipid profiles and improve cholesterol levels, reveals a study conducted at the University of the Pacific at Stockton in California. According to findings, published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology, the use of avocados in lieu of solid fats and foods that have higher saturated fat content to significantly change lipid profiles. "Fresh avocado, as part of a
balanced diet and as a cholesterolfree substitute for solid fats can help be part of the solution for maintaining normal cholesterol levels," said Nikki Ford, PhD, director of nutrition from Hass Avocado Board in the US. The researchers found avocado consumption (1 to 1.5 per day) significantly reduced total cholesterol (TC), LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides (TG) -- a type of fat found in your blood, when they were substituted for sources of saturated fat.
Alcohol in moderation good for heart: Study IANS, LONDON
P
eople who drink wine, liquor or beer in moderation are less prone to heart failure and heart attacks than those who rarely or never drink, according to two new studies. The researchers found that three to five drinks a week can be good for your heart. "It's primarily the alcohol that leads to more good cholesterol, among other things. But alcohol can also cause higher blood pressure. So it's best to drink moderate amounts relatively often," said one of the
researchers Imre Janszky, professor of social medicine at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). While one of the
studies published in the International Journal of Cardiology is about heart failure, the other published in the Journal of Internal
Medicine evaluated the relationship between alcohol and acute myocardial infarction (AMI), the medical term for heart attack. In both cases, research showed that people who regularly drink alcohol have better cardiovascular health than those who consume little or no alcohol. The studies showed that those who drank three to five drinks per week were 33 percent less prone to heart failure than those who abstained or drank infrequently. In the case of heart attacks too, moderate alcohol consumption was found to be beneficial.
